Victoria: Well, I have to say, I have not missed a beat since stepping back into control here.

Victor: Uh-huh.

Victoria: And you don’t have to worry about me anymore. I am back on my game. Ashland is in the rearview mirror, and I am focused on moving the company forward. I don’t suppose you saw the video call with the division heads earlier?

Victor: Yes, I saw it. Very impressive. And I fully support you wanting to acquire more companies. But, sweetheart, uh, be careful doing that, okay?

Adam: Thanks for meeting me.

Chance: Adam, I came here to make one thing very clear. The ashland locke investigation is closed. His death was ruled an accident. So there is no need for you to fish around for any fresh dirt. You understand? I’m done playing games with you. Move on.

Adam: Look, I’m sorry. I don’t know if I can now, not after seeing some pretty incriminating evidence against victor, evidence that you obviously chose to ignore. No, I think now would be a pretty good time for you to consider righting this wrong because it would be a pretty terrible thing for you if proof came out that you covered up a crime as a personal favor to your father-in-law.

Adam: This doesn’t have to get adversarial, chance. I’m just curious — why wasn’t certain dna and fingerprint evidence followed up on?

Chance: How’d you come by that information?

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Maybe I found a laptop on a bench in a park that a police lackey left behind. Okay, but let’s get real. The how and where of it is not relevant. It’s that the evidence exists and what it could prove that matters. Now, I know that you’re not somebody who could be bought off, but something clearly happened. What happened? Did victor intimidate you to falling in line with the newmans?

Chance: No one intimidated me, and I am not about to be intimidated by you, adam. I did my job. I made a judgment call, and i have no remorse about my decision.

Adam: I find that hard to believe, knowing you as well as I do. Quite frankly, chance, it seems like you’ve lost your way.

Chance: You are the one that’s lost your way, pal. And you are headed down a dangerous path.

Victor: What do you think about your sister’s demeanor?

Lily: Billy won’t be joining us. He’s wrapping up his final podcast episode. So he’ll be refocusing on his coo job.

Devon: Oh, really? I thought he and chelsea were really finding their groove with that show.

Lily: I mean, it was his idea, to be honest, and I’m glad. I am.

Devon: Yeah.

Lily: And he found a new host, someone who has his similar sensibility, so the show will carry on.

Devon: Oh, nice. That’s good to hear.

Lily: Yeah. Uh, so, what did you want to bring up?

Nate: Yes. Um, I’ve been doing some research about what it would take to start our own music festival. The numbers are promising, not to mention the fringe benefits, like elevating our name recognition on a much larger scale. The way I see it, it’s a win, hands down.

Chelsea: I am so sorry. I don’t know what came over me.

Billy: It’s okay. It’s alright. You know, we’ve been working closely together lately, and, uh, the moment was misinterpreted. It happens to the best of us.

Chelsea: Can we just pretend that never happened? We need to focus because this is our final podcast, so let’s just move on.

Billy: You don’t think we should talk about this for a minute? I mean —

Chelsea: I absolutely do not.

Sally: [ Chuckles ] Well, I have to give it to you. It takes real nerve showing your face in this building. Do I need to call security?

Adam: Oh, that won’t be necessary. I’m here to apologize.

Sally: I’m not really sure what to make of that, but I’m open to hearing whatever it is that you have to say. The floor is yours.

Adam: Look, I’m sorry that things got so unpleasant with us. I shouldn’t have been indirect with you.

Sally: Try manipulative.

Adam: I’m sorry.

Sally: The problem was that you weren’t very good at it and I wasn’t falling for it.

Adam: Well, I guess when it comes to you, I met my match.

Sally: And then some.

Adam: Look, I take responsibility for everything that went down with us, and I’m just hoping that there might be a way to make things a little less hostile between us moving forward.

Sally: [ Scoffs ] I don’t think I was ever hostile.

Adam: No. You’re right. You weren’T. I… even when I was being really rough on you. And maybe that’s because we understand each other deep down, regardless of what words were being said.

Sally: You’re right.

Adam: And despite everything that’s happened, I still feel like you are the only one that, um…I can open up to.

Sally: Well, I appreciate that. If there is something that you need to get off your chest, you can talk to me. If you have age-related macular degeneration,

Devon: Okay, so, this is not what you’re gonna to want to hear, nate, but doing a music festival is not the move for our company right now.

Nate: How can you make a judgment call like that already? You haven’t even seen the research yet.

Devon: It doesn’t take research to know that starting a music festival from scratch is a huge risk that will take up a lot of our cash.

Lily: Well, listen, I know that it would take a significant amount of capital, but I think the idea’s interesting.

Devon: Yeah, I think the idea is interesting, too. That’s what I said to you when you pitched it to me. I’m just saying that right now isn’t the best time. This is our first year as a company. We’re brand-new, and we’re bound to have some hiccups, some bumps in the road. And I think that it’s a smart thing for us to keep a hold of our cash to be prepared for that sort of thing and not just take a big swing at something that could be a miss.

Nate: I think that approach is unnecessarily defensive and too conservative. But I guess it’s your call. I’ve got to get to another meeting.

Chelsea: Today actually marks our last episode of the podcast because our founder, billy abbott, has decided to focus on his day job. And I guess that could kind of be the theme of this whole episode, right? Goodbyes.

Billy: Mm.

Chelsea: How to navigate them, what you can learn from them.

Billy: Yeah. And you know what? Goodbyes don’t always have to be heart-wrenching and tragic. You know, they can be civil, amicable, maybe even a little uplifting.

Chelsea: Yeah. Actually, this isn’t the first time billy and I have said goodbye. I mean, we’ve parted ways before.

Billy: That is true, but we don’t have to get into that right now.

Chelsea: Except, you know, the audience might be intrigued by the fact that, you know, we were an item once, you know, once upon a time.

Billy: Well, that — yeah, that — that was a long time ago, chels.

Chelsea: True. It’s ancient history. Not sure why I brought it up.

Billy: I don’t know. Maybe — maybe because with goodbyes there is a sense of loss. But there’s also room for new beginnings.

Chelsea: Mm-hmm.

Billy: And I guess that is time to wrap it up.

Billy: Okay. Um, look, I just want to say that this has been an amazing experience. I’ve learned a lot. And I really want to thank each and every person that has listened. Victor: I tend to agree, but what do you think about all the eagerness with which she is suddenly making all these acquisitions?

Nick: I think she’s a little overzealous in her desire to remove any stain ashland left on her or newman. But I totally get it. I mean, he absolutely humiliated her — and not just once. Now, she was able to get some payback by getting you back your money from ashland. But she did love him, dad.

Victor: Ay, ay, ay, ay, ay. Her taste in men, I tell you, has always been her achilles’ heel.

Nick: Vick’s got a lot to prove to herself right now. When she came back from new york and she said she wanted things to be different, I know she meant it.

Victor: Yeah, I just wish we had been able to get ashland locke out of town before his demise. But things are the way they are, aren’t they? And if your sister wants to prove herself, let her prove herself in spades.

Adam: I was fortunate enough to stumble across a certain police report.

Sally: How do you stumble across a police report?

Adam: Well, that part isn’t important. What is in it is what matters. The report details the investigation into ashland’s death. And it includes a lot of evidence against victor that chance willfully ignored. And it’s evidence that needs to come out.

Sally: Damn it. Adam, for a minute there, i thought you were actually being sincere and straightforward with me. You don’t need a sympathetic ear. You need help taking down victor. No, you used our history and what we once had to work me over again.

Adam: Okay, look, I will admit that I needed you to listen long enough to tell you what is going on. But that doesn’t change the facts with a huge possibility here. This is a gold mine of a story. It’s the kind of story that could make a young media mogul’s career. And I’m willing to give you all the evidence you need to run it. All you have to do is publish the truth and reveal to the world my dad’s cover-up.

Devon: Hey, you know that my opposition to the music festival idea has nothing to do with any personal issues between me and nate — ’cause I said the same thing to you about my concerns that it would be stretching our company too thin.

Lily: Yes. Yes, you did. But you also said that we should explore it more, which is exactly what nate did. And he’s right. You haven’t looked at the data. So, can you give it a little bit more consideration?

Devon: Absolutely, I can. I don’t have a problem doing that. And this is not some kind of attack on nate, either. This is just business. Our company is doing well and it’s stable right now and I’d like to keep it that way, not risk at all by exceeding our grasp.

Billy: Are we okay?

Chelsea: We’re good. I promise.

Billy: Okay, ’cause I don’t want this to be awkward at all.

Chelsea: It’s not. It won’t be. But I meant what I said before. Can we just never bring this up again, please?

Billy: Well, yeah, of course we can, but we have been so great at being open and honest with each other, both on and off the air. I’m just not sure that’s the best way to handle this.

Chelsea: It is. For me.

Chelsea: You’ve really looked out for me, and I appreciate you having me back and having such faith in me, but, um, it just wouldn’t be the same.

Billy: Okay. Do you mind me asking what you’re gonna do next?

Chelsea: [ Sighs ] It’s just something I’m gonna have to figure out on my own.

Nick: Hey. Glad I ran into you. Feels like a brand new day, huh?

Chance: I wish it did, nick. Thought we were all gonna be able to move on from all this, but something’s happened.

Nick: I thought the case was closed and we were out of the woods.

Chance: Yeah, well, someone got their hands on all the evidence that I uncovered about the events the night ashland died. All of the evidence.

Nick: [ Sighs ] How? They read the police report you filed? Who we talking about? Adam.

Sally: You’re right. If victor orchestrated a cover-up, it would be one hell of a story.

Adam: No, no, no, there’s no “if” about it. I’m not asking you to take my word for it. I can show you a police report that proves all of it.

Sally: If I publish this story, it is the end of my career at newman media.

Adam: Do you really want to work for a company owned by a man who staged a car crash to cover up the fact that his favorite son killed his daughter’s ex-husband?

Sally: What?

Adam: I told you it was juicy.

Sally: You actually expect me to believe that nick murdered ashland?

Adam: It was an accident. Ashland was threatening victoria, and to protect her, nick punched him.

Sally: Yeah, I knew that he hit him, but I thought that’s as far as it went.

Adam: Well, apparently he inherited dear old dad’s boxing skills because one punch is all it took. He hit ashland, he hit his head on the fireplace in just the right spot, and the miserable bastard died.

Sally: Oh, my god.

Adam: Yeah. Well, good riddance, as far as I’m concerned.

Sally: But this — this sounds like a clear-cut case of self-defense. So, why would victor cover it up?

Adam: Because the chess master cannot resist playing the game. As far as I know, my siblings had nothing to do with this. It was all dear old dad, and the story should reflect that.

Sally: This is insane.

Adam: It’s also potentially award-winning, sally. Okay, look, even if my family cans you, there’s gonna be a bunch of other media companies that will be dying to hire you.

Sally: I am skeptical that anyone would want to hire someone who goes after their own boss.

Adam: I think you’d be surprised. I think people would really respect the fact that you did the right thing.

Sally: I’m not sure it is the right thing.

Adam: What my father did was blatantly wrong. He used his power and his influence to interfere in the justice system. He should face repercussions for that.

Sally: Okay, but what about chance? Because if I publish this story, it also exposes his complicity.

Adam: He was complicit. I confronted him with what i knew. I gave him the opportunity to fix it on his own accord. He flatly refused.

Sally: So now chance has just become someone else you’re willing to throw under the bus in your battle against victor? Like you did with me?

Adam: I didn’t toss you aside, sally, okay? I protected you, not only when it comes to your job, but to the all-out war I am about to start.

Nate: Devon just cannot help himself. No matter what I’m advocating for, if I say “a,” he says “B.” And it’s especially frustrating because I cannot tell what the hell is going on with him, why he’s being so antagonistic and can’t give me the slightest opportunity.

Elena: And I get it. You want to make your mark with the company. But I guess I’m still trying to understand why you’re so angry about all of this.

Nate: [ Sighs ]Rmer president trump residence known as mar-a-lago has just been unsealed. The judge who approved that warrant ruled yesterday that the affidavit could be relieved after officials removed or redacted is certain sensitive information. The justice department argued that releasing any portion of this document could compromise its investigation. The judge sided with requests from multiple news organizations, including cbs news, to partially unseal this document. You saw it unscrolling on the screen. I want to bring in correspondent robert costa, who is palm beach, florida, where this issue was decided. Bob, what do we know so far?

Good to be with you, major. Cbs news is still digested this affidavit. Many black lines throughout the document, heavily redacted. This is a serious document. As I’ve been reading it and working with our team here, it is evident that the government believes, and this is why they believe they had probable cause to go into mar-a-lago, on the palm beach side, to go into mar-a-lago because there are 15 boxes full of highly classified information, sensitive, compartmented information, dealing with national security and national defense documents. Because they believe they had probable cause they were in this storage facility at mar-a-lago and not properly stored, they’re telling the judge here in west palm beach, bruce reinhart, that they felt compelled to go into former president trump’s handling of documents. They note in this second page of the affidavit, they believe there is probable cause of the crime of obstruction being committed, and they have evidence of that. This is a serious case, the affidavit underscores it. We’re still trying to find out more about the specifics, which have been heavily redacted.

Bob costa with us. The document runs 38 pages, jeff pegues is at the tablE. A few moments ago at the white house, president biden was participating in a women’s equality convenient. The question was: Has national security been threat dendthreatened by documents at mar-a-lago, and the president said, “we will let the justice department determine that.” Jeff pegues, what strikes you about what you’ve seen so far?

In some ways this is a disappointing document. If you’re looking for some sort of smoking gun in terms of what the government may have and why they searched mar-a-lago when they did, you might be disappointed. However, what the government has done here has — they have released, and as you can see here, look at all of these redactions, and this is just a taste of what this document looks like, but if you literally read between the lines, what you will see is how this investigation has conducted, almost from start, which basically the D.O.J.’S role in this started in february, to this point now, including the search of mar-a-lago, and the search for the 15 boxes. What the government is saying, and what stands out to me here, is that they are saying there is evidence of obstruction. And I think that’s the line that stands out to me most. In that, there are supporters of the former president who have made comments, inaccurate comments, about these documents —

Representations to the justice department.

Representations that the department of justice wants to get bacK. These are government documents. Various classifications, that’s what they’re saying here. They don’t belong to the former president. They say these are government documents, produced by the government for the government.

Kathryn, before i come to you, I want to ask jeff this one question: This 38 pages, extremely unusual for this to be seen at this stage in any investigation involving anyznrz american,c&n

Yeah. This doesn’t happen in every case.

Affidavits usually do not appear until there is an indictment, and we’re very long way away from that.

They stay sealed. The fact itfc-t is out there, even though it has been heavily redacted, I’m sure there was a lot of hand wringing on the part of D.O.J. Officials because there are still these echoes of 2016, and james comey sort of making declarations about an investigation that ultimately, a lot of people believe, played a role in the 2016 election. And nobody wants to go back to thaT. And this attorney general has been very — he has been honest about the fact that we treat everybody the same. There is nobody above the law. But that also means, in his view, that we go by the book. And releasing something like this is not going by the book. But there is this pressure on the department of justice to put something out there to the public.

Major, what is important to recognize from the documents the government has filed, beyond the affidavit, this is an ongoing federal investigation of the highest level, and they are dealing with witnesses that they are really concerned about in terms of intimidation, and they mention it in this document, civilian witnesses. And there has been a lot of reporting at cbs news and elsewhere about how the mar-a-lago properties, employees, people who had access to president trump’s inner circle, visitors to that property, play have left in vulnerable to foreign actors, to anyone with ill-intentions. What the federal government is saying, this is an ongoing investigation with many witnesses across complicated fronts around the former president. And that’s why they’re so hesitant to give more information about the details of what they’re learning from specific people, who might be vulnerable to some kind of attack or criticism and the intimidation factor.

Bob costa at west palm beach. Kathryn, many of us at cbs news have experience of going through documents like this. What has emerged to you as you read through it here sitting at the table.

The key section to me is the probable cause section. Unsurprisingly, this is the most heavily redacted. But there are some pieces of the puzzle i want to try to put together. It tells us earlier this year, the national archives received these boxes that had class fide records, or records marked “class fidE.” Andclassified.”There is probable cause to believe that documents containing classified national defense information and presidential records remain at the premises. It goes on to say there was no a secure facility at mar-a-lago that would be authorized to contained highly classified information. And it goes on to say “i submit that probable cause exists to believe that evidence or other contraband illegally possessed will still be found at these premises.” In other words, they believe there was highly sensitive, national defense information, in classified information, at the highest levels that remained at mar-a-lago, and it did not have the kind of secure government facility, what they know as a skiff, to protect these records. What I also find instructive are the five pillars that the F.B.I. And the justice department lay out for withholding so much of this information for the publiC. It talks about witness information, and that quickly and broadly witnesses could be identified through social media, and this would have a chilling affect on cooperation. It talks about the roadmap to the investigation. It talks about the rules of criminal procedure, so protecting grand jury information. It specifically talks about safety of law enforcement personnel and the privacy of others. So those are the five pillars. But what we can see in the pieces of this puzzle, is they believe there was evidence that still highly classified national defense information remained at mar-a-lago in a facility that was not secure.

Kathryn, the former president has represented in public in various ways that he was cooperative with this. And that this search warrant was not necessary. As a last resort. That this could have been resolved some other way. Is there anything you have been able to see — and i know we’re going through it bit by bit — that comes close that underlying question, cooperation or whether or not this could have been handled another way?

There is a specific section where it talks about the findings of the national archive, this more than half dozen boxes containing classified information, and it goes on to say there was a public statement from the “save america” pact, that nothing was founD. So this was, in the view of this affidavit, sort of an element of obstruction. So saying publicly the national archives didn’t see anything here, but, in fact, we now know —

Essentially misrepresentation.

That’s a very good point because if you look at page 17, the 15 boxes provided, the archives contain classified information. They have a breakdown of what was in there. 184 unique documents bearing classification markings, including 67 documents marked as confidential.

92 documents marked as secret. 95 documents marked at top secret. The F.B.I. Agents observed documents reflecting the following departments, con sem nationconsemnation, arcon. It shows these aren’t personal momentoS. According to the F.B.I., These are top-secret, confidential documents that belong to the government.

Victoria: So, what did he want from you?

Sally: He asked me to write a story about it.

Victoria: Ah, I see.

Sally: You don’t seem very surprised.

Victoria: I have been dealing with my brother for a very long time. I expected some sort of attack sooner rather than later. That’s just who he is.

Sally: I’m sorry.

Victoria: Well, if he risked showing his hand, then he’s being careless. So, he either wants the information about what he’s doing to be out there, or he’s so wounded that he doesn’t give a damn anymore.

Victor: Hello, son.

Adam: Hey, guys.

Nick: We were looking for you, so we tracked you down.

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Well, you got me. What’d you want to talk about? I love a good old newman male-bonding session.

Nick: We understand you’ve come across some information.

Adam: Could you be more specific?

Nick: Alright, cut the act, adam. What do you want? What’s the endgame here? I mean, is it blackmail? Because we know this isn’t about money. So, what do you want? You just want vick out of the big chair? Is that the goal? You want to be ceo of newman enterprises?

Victor: You know that’s not going to happen, okay? You know that the issue you have is with me.

Adam: Oh, wow, dad. You managed to yank the ceo position away from me again. And this time, I didn’t even have the job. Just a mere suggestion from nick woke the sleeping lion. Just anything to toy with me, right?

Victor: You know that’s not true. No matter how far I think you and I have come, you always manage to dredge up something in the past that makes you the victim, when in reality, right now you’re the one making the threats.

Adam: I haven’t threatened anyone…yet.

Victor: Don’t you see how history is repeating itself? I took a risk protecting your siblings from ashland locke, as I took a risk when I protected you after you accidentally killed A.J. Montalvo. I did not want that to become public. I didn’t want you to run around being accused of being a killer all your life.

Adam: Well, that’s what you refuse to get, dad, is you didn’t save me. You ruined me.

Victor: I thought you’d come to terms with all that.

Nick: I thought you had, too.

Adam: Have you come to terms with all the ways dad has protected you, nick?

Victor: What are you talking about?

Adam: I mean, really, how do you fit murder into a small, little, neat box? How are you coming to terms with taking a man’s life? And you’re a grown man. You’re not an impressionable little kid with blood on his hands. I hate to say it, but those feelings that I’m sure you are having — they’re not gonna just fade away. Even I couldn’t completely shut them down, as repressed as mine were. To this day, I will still hear a phrase or I will still see something that reminds me of my mother’s farm, and it all comes flooding back, all the pangs of guilt and shame, all the questions about my own morality. You know, I ask myself, “when I killed that man, was it really an accident, or deep down, did i want him to go down as hard as he did?” See, these are all things that are gonna be bubbling in your subconscious for the rest of your life, big brother. And for you, dad, you can keep your precious ceo chair, okay? I don’t want victoria’s job. Maybe all I want is to see justice finally served.

Victor: You listen to me, son. You’re playing a dangerous game. Don’t do that.

Nick: [ Sighs ]

Billy: Look, what happened today only reinforces my decision to step away from the podcast, okay? And as far as chelsea, I don’t know. I mean, maybe she’s just missing some sort of connection or she feels a little bit lost, which i can understand, you know? I felt lost before you came back into my life, as well.

Lily: Mm. Good answer.

Billy: Look, it wasn’t a big deal. I hope you feel the same, okay? But now I am here and full-time your coo. So, please fill me in. What have I missed?

Lily: Um… [ Clears throat ] Yes. What have you missed? Um…there was more tension between devon and nate. Nate wants to move forward with the music festival idea, and devon thinks that it’s too risky for the first year of our merger.

Billy: Yeah, I can see devon’s point there.

Lily: Yeah, I can see both of their points, but ultimately i think it’s a good idea. I mean, think what a festival could do for our company. I think it’s next-level thinking, and why wouldn’t chancellor-winters want to be a part of that?

Victoria: Thank you so much for the heads-up about adam. It won’t be forgotten.

Sally: Not a problem. Just seemed like the right thing to do.

Victoria: For the record, i wouldn’t trust anything that adam says from this point on. He’s clearly out for revenge, and he is willing to use anyone to get what he wants. Can I ask you where you left things with him?

Sally: [ Sighs ] Let’s see. I thanked him for the info and then essentially called him a bastard for everything that he put me through. But I obviously didn’t mention that I would be telling you everything.

Victoria: But did you turn down his proposition to publish the story?

Sally: I was pretty adamant about it in the moment, even if I didn’t say the exact words. Why?

Victoria: Well, because if you didn’t shoot down the idea completely, this might be useful.

Diane: Any chance you can spare me a few minutes of your time?

Jack: Yeah. What’s on your mind?

Diane: Oh. I wanted to show you the latest key art and copy for the marchetti launch. I was hoping to get your take before bringing it to mariah.

Jack: You’ve been coming to me a lot lately for my professional opinion. If you intend to run everything you’re working on by me first, I think that’s a big mistake.

Phyllis: I’d love to think that you invited me here for some mother-daughter time, but I could tell — I could tell by your face that you did not.

Summer: Couldn’t stop thinking about that journalist that I saw you and grandma meeting with.

Phyllis: What about her?

Summer: After we parted ways, I realized I recognize her. It took me a minute, but then I put it all together. Talia morgan is a highly respected investigative reporter based out of los angeles. And I’m guessing she didn’t mean to talk to the two of you in order to write about ashland’s car crash.

Phyllis: That’s not impossible.

Summer: Mom, I didn’t buy your story last night, and I’m not buying it now. In fact, I have a new theory. All I needed to do was connect the dots. Writer who’s always chasing the next big story… los angeles… diane.

[ Footsteps approaching ]

Chelsea: Just when you think it’s safe to go for a walk in the park.

Sally: Actually, this run-in is a bit fortuitous because i was just thinking about how concerned I was about you.

Chelsea: You are concerned about me?

Sally: Well, I was at the rooftop bar at the athletic club earlier, and I happened to see you and adam in what seemed to be a pretty intense conversation. I was going to say something, but I didn’t want to intrude. I hope everything’s okay.

Adam: [ Sighs ] You can, uh, set up over there. I got to say, I appreciate that you’re a jack-of-all-trades — clever enough to get kevin’s laptop without him seeing it and technically savvy enough to hack into it, too.

Lucas: You know, two-in-one package. But let’s be clear, it’s gonna double my fee.

Adam: You already said it was gonna be more because you work for the police. Now, this? Starting to feel like I’m being swindled here.

Lucas: Hey, I got bills to pay.

Adam: Look, you will be more than fairly compensated for your services. Let’s just hope that phase two doesn’t prove to be too challenging. Okay? It’s not like we’re trying to hack into the cia firewall or anything. All I need is access to the local police report on the ashland locke case.

Kevin: Damn it, adam, give me my computer.

Adam: I have no idea what you’re talking about, kevin.

Kevin: That is a load of bull.

Adam: As you can see, I’m in the middle of a meeting with a business associate. So can we do whatever this is another time?

Kevin: I wonder what kind of business you’re discussing. I doubt it has anything to do with investment banking and more to do with breaking into someone’s car and taking their computer!

Lucas: Hey, wait a minute. Are you calling me a thief?

Adam: [ Clears throat ] Yeah, kevin. Who are you to come in here, hurling accusations at my guest?

Kevin: Oh, save it. I know what you’re up to. Do you think I have short-term memory loss, that I would suddenly forget that you were just on the hunt for dirt to use against victor? I shoot you down. Next thing I know, someone breaks into my car and swipes my computer!

Adam: Uh, that sounds like a very unfortunate coincidence to me. Sure I don’t have to tell somebody that works for the gcpd that people have valuables stolen all the time out of their car.

Kevin: You think you’re gonna find something incriminating on there, don’t you? You’re wasting your time. There is nothing on my computer worth seeing. Besides, I have built up walls of protection around my files that only I can penetrate. So save yourself the double disappointment and give me back my computer. Now.

Adam: Kevin, I’ve already told you, I have no idea what you’re talking about.

Kevin: Oh, give it up. Tell you what? Play nice, I won’t even press charges. But I am warning you, this is a one-time-only offer. What’s it gonna be?

Adam: [ Sighs ]

Chelsea: Not that it’s any of your business, but adam and I are fine. We weren’t seeing eye-to-eye there for a minute about something that had to do with connor, but we worked it out.

Sally: Well, good. I’m glad, for connor’s sake, ’cause he doesn’t need to get involved in his parents’ issues.

Yeah, I agree. Fortunately, our son has always known, and will always know, how much both his parents love him. We have a bond, the three of us, that’s just unbreakable.

Sally: Hmm, sounds like the perfect relationship. Oh, [Scoffs] Wait. Sorry.

Chelsea: I don’t deny, my story with adam has had some unbearably painful chapters, but luckily we healed those old wounds. And the thing is, even if we’re not technically together, in a way we always will be because of our incredible history, all of those years, and bringing a child into the world together. We have a deep connection. Nothing is stronger than the bond we share.

Jack: You’re going to have to start trusting your own judgment. Stop second-guessing yourself. You don’t need my opinion in order to have confidence in your own.

Diane: But I value your opinion. And since marchetti is under the jabot umbrella, I figure something like this is going to cross your desk eventually. Besides, I want to capitalize on your vast experience and knowledge.

Jack: Much as I appreciate that, if you’re going to succeed around here, you’re gonna have to start owning your decisions and be prepared to rise or fall with them.

Diane: Good advice. Next time, I’ll go straight to mariah. But this time, since I’m already here —

Jack: Okay, okay, okay, I’ll look at what you have. What is it?

Diane: Yeah.

Jack: Actually, this is quite good. I think kyle will like it.

Diane: Mm.

Jack: Kyle, what can we do for you?

Summer: Look, mom, I’ve done my homework. I know that talia morgan is staying at the grand phoenix with no checkout date on record.

Phyllis: Oh, my goodness. How would you know that?

Summer: Helps to be the owner’s daughter.

Phyllis: Oh, summer, [Sighs] You’re jumping to conclusions. You’re blowing this out of proportion.

Summer: Mom, you’d better not be using this journalist to create some sort of hatchet job on diane.

Phyllis: I’m not gonna do that. I told you I’d never do that. I mean, just because I’m not walking around with a smile plastered on my face. You know, we — yeah. I mean, I’m not attacking diane, not doing… I have been the model employee at marchetti.

Summer: Mom, you haven’t even been there long enough to collect a paycheck. So forgive me if I’m not ready to throw you a parade for your good behavior, okay? Especially given my suspicions.

Phyllis: I love working with you. This is my dream — to work with my daughter. Why would I want to screw that up? Diane jenkins is not worth it.

Summer: I want to believe what you’re saying, mom. I really do. But I have a lot of questions about this talia morgan thing. It makes no sense why she would need to talk to you about ashland’s death. I mean, grandma, I sort of get because of the company and victoria. But you barely knew the guy.

Phyllis: Okay, okay, okay. Just… [ Sighs ] I begged nikki to go to the meeting with her. I begged her.

Summer: Why would you do that?

Phyllis: I did it for you.

Summer: For me?

Phyllis: Yeah. You know, I wanted to know what this talia morgan’s angle was. You know? I wanted to do my own reconnaissance, make sure that she wasn’t — she wasn’t desiring to throw you and kyle and little harrison under the bus. You know, I wanted to find out what she was gonna do and tell you what to watch out for. That’s — that’s what I was doing. I only care about being a good mom to you and a good grandma to that little harrison. Right? So that’s what that was about, whether you believe it or not.

Sally: I get what you’re saying about you and adam having a history. But that’s the key word, isn’t it — “history”? Because after all you’ve been through, there really is no going back, is there?

Chelsea: Well, you should take those words to heart, because you’re also history where adam’s concerned.

Sally: What’s your point?

Chelsea: Well, you know, even though you two weren’t involved very deeply or for very long, it’s always really painful when an affair ends. I just really admire the way you guys have handled the breakup. You got right back on your feet quickly. I think it’s very healthy and very mature, the way you both moved on.

Sally: [ Chuckles ]

Adam: A one-time offer? What is this, kevin? Some kind of threat?

Kevin: Threat, warning — call it whatever you like. Just give me back my computer.

Adam: [ Sighs ] I know that you hate me. So this unfounded accusation is personal. You don’t have any proof to back up what you’re saying, kevin?

Kevin: The only proof I need is that smug look on your face.

Adam: You don’t have a shred of evidence. If you did, you wouldn’t have come here alone. You’d be with an officer, holding a search warrant. Unless I missed that part. Is there a cop outside, waiting to make a big entrance?

Kevin: No. I’m here alone. There is no warrant.

Adam: [ Sighs ] Well, then, I guess we’re done here.

Lucas: [ Sighs ]

Adam: Sorry for the interruption. But, uh, was kevin bluffing, or was he telling the truth? Is the firewall impenetrable, or can you get through it?

Lucas: It shouldn’t be a problem to access a simple police report. As good as fisher claims to be, I’m sure I’m just as good, if not better.

Adam: That is what I’m talking about. It’s exactly the kind of service that I’m paying for.

Lucas: Speaking of paying, you didn’t mention that this report had anything to do with your father. If you’re planning on making moves against victor newman, the price for my skills just went up.

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Geez, man, is there anything that doesn’t merit a surcharge, in your opinion? If you deliver, trust me, I will make it worth your while.

Lucas: Alright.

Adam: [ Sighs ]

[ Cellphone rings ]

Chloe: Hi. How’d it go with adam?

Kevin: Not great. He denied everything, called my bluff.

Chloe: I’m sorry, but I have to ask. Do you think it’s possible he didn’t steal your laptop? Maybe it was just some random coincidence?

Kevin: I appreciate the wishful thinking, but I highly doubt it. He had this shady-looking guy there with him. I would bet everything that he’s the one who actually stole it, at adam’s request.

Chloe: And there was nothing that you could do?

Kevin: Couldn’t exactly turn the place upside-down with the two of them sitting there.

Chloe: So where does that leave you now?

Kevin: It leaves me totally screwed.

Summer: All I can say, mom, is I really hope that you’re telling me the truth right now.

Phyllis: Everything’s gonna be okay, I promise. Hey.

Billy: Hey, there, ladies. Listen, congratulations on your new job at marchetti. How is that going?

Phyllis: Uh, great. I’m really excited.

Billy: That’s good. Well, I’m happy for the both of you. Listen, I don’t want to interrupt. I just wanted to make sure that you got the paperwork on the final sale of grand phoenix.

Phyllis: Yeah.

Billy: Lily sent it to you a little bit ago.

Phyllis: Yep. Yep, I did. Looks great.

Billy: Okay, good. Well, have your lawyers look over it. There’s nothing in there that’s gonna surprise you. It’s exactly what we agreed to.

Phyllis: It’s right here. I’ve already looked it over. It seems fine.

Billy: Alright. Well, again, no pressure. Just sign that whenever you’re ready, and we’ll take the next step.

Phyllis: Mm.

Billy: I’m gonna go check on my order. Good to see you both.

Summer: Mom, I know how much the grand phoenix means to you, everything it represents. Have you really considered this thoroughly? Are you absolutely sure that you are ready to say goodbye to it?

Kyle: Did I miss something? I wasn’t aware of a marchetti-jabot meeting on the books.

Jack: There wasn’T. This was an — an impromptu business conversation.

Kyle: I see. I’ve been looking for you, mom. There’s a pressing matter I need you to review.

Diane: Oh, okay. Well, I think we’ve covered everything here. Lead the way.

Jack: [ Sighs ]

Diane: So, what is it that you need?

Kyle: I need you to tell me exactly what you were doing in there with my dad. Hi, I’m nancy.

Phyllis: Wow. Those — all those hours of hard work that I put into that hotel

[Sighs] All boil down to numbers on a screen. Significant numbers — that’s for sure — but still numbers nonetheless.

Summer: Mom, didn’t you hear billy? He said that there’s no rush for this, and I agree with him. I think that you need to take a minute — take all the time you need to figure out if this is what you really want.

Phyllis: Um… no, no. Time to make it official. Alright? Here we go. Whew. Okay, well, there you go. Okay? [ Laughs ]

Summer: [ Sighs ]

Phyllis: [ Sighs ] So good.

[ Clears throat ] That’s done.

Billy: Yeah, I saw that. Happened sooner than I expected.

Phyllis: Why prolong the inevitable?

Billy: I got to ask you. You’re sure you want to do this? Seems like there’s more to the story than you’re telling me.

Phyllis: Yeah, there is. You know, all the naysayers in this town who look down on me. It’s my chance to prove to them once again… that there’s nothing I can’t do.

Diane: I just wanted to get jack’s advice about something I’ve been working on. You know, I’m still finding my way, and I want to make sure I get things right.

Kyle: But why are you going to my father when you work for marchetti, not jabot?

Diane: Well, to be honest, it’s — [Sighs] It’s easier for me to take advice and take constructive criticism from jack. Kyle, I want you to be proud of me. And I don’t want you to regret your decision to give me this opportunity. But I promise, next time, I will go straight to mariah.

Kyle: Yeah, I don’t think so.

Diane: You don’t want me to go to her first?

Kyle: I mean, I don’t think that’s the real reason you were in there. I saw you through the window. You were obviously flirting with him. And I’m here to tell you now, it needs to stop. It’s wrong.

Diane: Kyle, you are completely misreading the situation and the dynamic between jack and me. I appreciate his guidance and friendship, but that’s it. There’s nothing more.

Kyle: I really hope so.

[ Sighs ]

Sally: It seems like you have misinterpreted what adam and I found together. Just because it’s over doesn’t mean what we had wasn’t intensely passionate, real, and incredibly strong. So strong, in fact, adam ultimately chose to put my best interests first.

Chelsea: So you’re saying he dumped you for your own good?

Sally: The only reason he broke up with me was to protect and support my dreams. He wanted to make sure that i got this incredible opportunity where he knew I would flourish. And there is only one word for that kind of sacrifice — love. Extraordinary love.

Chelsea: I can come up with a few other words for this load —

Sally: Adam still cares about me, and I’m sure he still cares about you, but it seems like you’re projecting a lot more onto your connection than what actually still exists.

[ Cellphone rings ]

Billy: Can you meet me

in the recording studio?

Chelsea: I have to go. Let me make something clear. You may think you understand adam and know everything about me. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Sally: [ Sighs ]

Adam: [ Sighs ]

Jack: Can you come by the

office?

Lucas: I’m in. I accessed the gcpd portal as kevin fisher, and I was able to pull up the police report on the ashland locke case.

Adam: Oh, I knew it. Ashland was at victoria’s house that night. “There was A…” there was an altercation. Nick hit him, and ashland was presumed dead, but then somehow he went missing. Wait a minute. Oh. Oh, here we go. Well, well, well. Isn’t that fascinating? Ashland’s body was found in his car at the bottom of a ravine, but an unidentified driver was caught on tape in it at a nearby gas station before the time of the crash. Right. Only a small sample of locke’s blood was found and a partial fingerprint, but it doesn’t match the deceased.

Lucas: Look, buddy, I don’t know what this has to do with your father, and frankly, i don’t care. Okay? So if that’s all you need from me, I’m gonna take my money and be on my way, alright?

Adam: You’ll find that that more than covers it, including all the additional fees that you tacked on, okay? Thanks, man. Nicely done.

Lucas: Okay. Pleasure doing business with you.

[ Sighing ]

Adam: Conclusion — ashland locke died from head trauma most likely caused from the car crash. Yeah. [ Sighs ] Somehow I don’t think that’s what happened. Dear old dad had the crash staged, and chance decided to look the other way. (Vo) is she tired? Sad? Mad? Bored?

Chelsea: How could I not? I was intrigued by your message.

Billy: Intrigued by my message? That was a very simple text message. What was so alluring?

Chelsea: Well, I thought, after our last conversation, this is the last place you would ask me to meet you. You said you were stepping away from all this.

Billy: Yes, I-I did.

Chelsea: So, did you listen to what I had to say, and you’re gonna reconsider? Did you decide to follow your passion, and you’re gonna continue working with me?

Billy: [ Sighs ]

Chloe: There you are. I was wondering where you were.

Sally: Sorry I’m late. I ran into chelsea.

Chloe: Oh, let me guess. You got into it when you should have just walked away.

Sally: [ Chuckles ] I can’t help it. That woman brings out the worst in me, especially when she takes every opportunity to rub the end of my relationship with adam in my face.

Chloe: It always just comes back to adam, doesn’t it? I am just so sick and tired of hearing his name every damn day!

Sally: [ Sighs ]

Jack: Adam. Hey, come on in.

Adam: Sorry, I didn’t reply to your texts earlier. I was tied up. Is now a good time?

Jack: Yeah, it’s a great time. I just wanted to touch base with you and see where your head was on coming to jabot as my new co-ceo. Have a seat.

Adam: [ Sighs ] So, I, um, promised you I would give it some serious thought. And, uh, I have. Working side-by-side with you would be an honor, and it would be a great opportunity.

Jack: We could be a powerful team.

Adam: I agree. And it means a lot to me that you even extended this offer. But, um, unfortunately, I’m going to have to decline.

Jack: Okay. I won’t deny that I am disappointed. Could I ask why you’re passing?

Adam: I actually have another project that I am working on, and I need to see if it’s going to pan out.

Jack: I’m not sure I like the sound of that. If whatever you’re working on has anything to do with what we discussed — your animosity toward your father — I can tell you, revenge is never quite as sweet as it’s cracked up to be.

Adam: Well, you don’t need to worry about me, jack. I am — I’m good.

Jack: You left that job because you wanted to put all things newman behind you. So do that. Break the cycle once and for all with victor. Put yourself out there, find something positive, and never look back.

Adam: Yeah, that’s — that’s ultimately what I’m trying to do, jack.

Jack: Good. You’ve come a long way already. I hate to see you lose well-earned momentum. Use all of that energy in a way that brings you the happiness and success that you deserve.

Adam: Well, thank you for the advice. Really, I can’t tell you how much your support and your friendship means. And I really hope that you find somebody worthy to sit next to you at the helm at jabot.

Jack: No rush. As a matter of fact, I will leave that job open just in case you change your mind.

Adam: [ Chuckles ]

Jack: Adam, I hope you’ll take to heart what I just said to you.

Adam: I will.

[ Knock on door ]

Kyle: Uh, sorry. Am I interrupting something?

Adam: No, I was just leaving.

Jack: Take care, adam.

Kyle: I was just coming to update you about the marchetti budget meeting that just wrapped up, but that can wait. What was the visit from adam all about?

Jack: I offered him your old job at jabot.

Kyle: What? Co-ceo?

Jack: Yeah, I was gonna tell you, but I was gonna wait to find out if he was interested.

Kyle: And was he?

Jack: You can relax. He turned me down.

Kyle: Thank god.

[ Sighs ] Sorry, dad. I know how fond you are of him. And to be honest, adam is a talented executive. But jabot doesn’t need him or his baggage.

Jack: Before you go too far in dissing the man, there’s always the chance he will change his mind and come.

Kyle: I really hope he doesn’T. We have a lot of personalities to manage in this building.

Jack: It seems to me you’re managing a lot today.

Kyle: Meaning?

Jack: I think we need to discuss what happened with diane in here earlier.

[Acoustic soul music throughout]

Jack: I didn’t for one minute buy your flimsy excuse for getting diane out of here. Stop babysitting.

Kyle: I wouldn’t describe it like that. I was just looking out for my father.

Jack: I can look out for myself, thank you very much.

Kyle: You and everyone else are worried about how I would deal with my mother being back in my life. I’m handling it fine. I’m more concerned about you. And I hope you know she’s becoming attached to you.

Jack: I can’t know that for sure, and neither can you. But I can assure you, though there is a growing level of trust between us, I am always cautious where diane is concerned, and I have no interest in having a romantic relationship with her.

Kyle: I can’t tell you how relieved I am to hear that. But I have noticed the two of you spending more and more time together lately.

Jack: Yes, as parents and grandparents. I assure you, I am keeping an eye on diane. Look, you have decided to give her a second chance, and I think that’s commendable. I, on the other hand, though I am being polite and at times friendly, I am always on guard where she’s concerned. I know the damage that she can do. I am not gonna let that happen again. Are we clear on this?

Kyle: Of course.

Jack: Good. Stop looking for trouble where there is none. Focus on your beautiful wife, your amazing son, and this tremendous new job you have — all the good things in your life.

Kyle: As usual, you’re right.

Billy: I did not change my mind. I’m sorry. I need to devote 100% of myself to my job as coo, not only to support lily but I made a commitment to chancellor-winters. I hope you can understand that.

Chelsea: I could make a whole speech, you know, about how you should do what you want to do, as opposed to what you think you need to do, and how that will affect your overall happiness in life. But you know what? I’m not gonna do it. I’m not gonna do it. You made a choice, and I have to respect that.

Billy: I appreciate that.

Chelsea: Okay. So if you’re so determined to be a corporate drone, why did you ask me to meet you tonight?

Billy: Well, I thought we could do one last podcast, almost like a farewell, where i officially pass the torch to you.

Chelsea: Just, that makes me feel weird. I’m so new to this. I don’t feel comfortable doing the podcast by myself.

Billy: I understand that. I mean, look, I didn’t know what I was doing when I first sat in this chair. I think some people would say that I still don’t know what I’m doing. But you got this. I know you do. I mean, you’ve got the instincts. You proved that when you came in here and changed what I was doing and made it better. You got a finger on the pulse of what people want to hear.

Chelsea: It’s one thing to fine-tune something that already exists. It’s much different than starting from scratch.

Billy: I believe in you, chelsea. Like I said, you transformed this dour, boring podcast into something uplifting, something that even sparkles, much like you. Okay? And I am very grateful that you came into the picture.

Sally: This isn’t about adam. This is about chelsea and the way that she treats me. It is not my fault that she couldn’t rekindle her failed relationship with him. And it is not my fault that she chose to walk away from a lucrative career to babble into a microphone with billy abbott. Yet somehow I am still the enemy.

Chloe: I think it’s a two-way street.

Chelsea: I give as good as i get, because, clearly, that woman loves seeing me suffer. But I refuse to give her the satisfaction.

Chloe: Look, I know that you’re hurting, but chelsea is hurting, too. She’s lost a lot. But this isn’t a competition, and you both need to just chill out. And thanks to adam, I am dealing with a much bigger problem than your little squabble with chelsea.

Kyle: [ Sighs ]

Summer: Kyle? What’s going on? You didn’t even see me. What’s got you so preoccupied?

Kyle: I saw my mom in my dad’s office.

Summer: Okay. What’s the big deal about that?

Kyle: She was not-so-subtly flirting with him.

Summer: Oh, my god. What did you do?

Kyle: Call her on it, of course, but she very sincerely denied it and told me I had it all wrong. And I warned my dad. I got a major scolding.

Summer: About what?

Kyle: Spending too much time worrying about my mother and what she was up to with him and with phyllis. I realized my dad’s right. And I know how stressed out you’ve been about my mom and phyllis, just as much as I have.

Summer: Because we have to protect the company. Any issues between our mothers is potentially problematic.

Kyle: But they’re adults. Even if they’re adults who hate each other. And we can’t keep constantly spending our days keeping an eye on them.

Summer: I get it. I get your logic, but I have reservations. I just left from talking to my mom, and she swore up and down that she’s not up to anything regarding diane. But I just don’t know if I can believe her. As much as I want to, just something about it doesn’t ring true to me.

Kyle: I know the feeling. I felt the same way after talking to my mom. But as of now, they haven’t done anything wrong that we know of. If they cross a line, then we can act. Right now, we need to stop hovering, let go of all the tension we’ve been carrying around.

Summer: Okay. I’m with you. It’s time for us to step back and let go.

Phyllis: [ Sighs ]

[ Thud ] Talia. Hi. It’s phyllis summers. I’m great. Thank you. Um, listen, I’m in the grand phoenix lobby. Do you have a second to meet? Actually… I have some ideas regarding your interest in diane jenkins.

Chloe: Kevin’s laptop was stolen, and we have every reason to believe that adam is the one behind it.

Sally: Why would adam want kevin’s laptop?

Chloe: Kevin thinks it has to do with finding out more about ashland locke’s death.

Sally: [ Scoffs ] I mean, adam has been obsessed with chance’s investigation. I’m just sorry that kevin got dragged into this.

Chloe: Yeah, you and me both.

Sally: Adam seems convinced that victor and the rest of his family have something to hide. I guess he just got fed up asking questions, so he decided to take matters into his own hands.

Chloe: Well, needless to say, kevin is furious.

Sally: Yeah, I bet. I’m not going to ask you to tell me what was on that computer that has got kevin so worried. So the question becomes, if adam finds what he’s looking for, what the hell is he gonna do with it next?

Chloe: [ Sighs ]

Adam: [ Sighs ] Hey, chance, it’s adam. Hey, look, we need to get together as soon as possible. It’s urgent. And believe me, you’re gonna want to take this meeting.

Chelsea: What if we focus on midlife career changes?

Billy: Hmm.

Chelsea: Finding new passion after years of going down another path?

Billy: Yeah, see, I’m gonna live till I’m 110, so I’m not quite ready for the midlife crisis.

Chelsea: Oh, you’re delusional and in denial.

Billy: True, true. But you’re onto something. What if we focus on continuing to find your true life passion throughout your life?

Chelsea: Kind of like the old adage, “if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.”

Billy: Look at you. You’re gonna be brilliant at this.

Chelsea: No, it’s just because I have you here to bounce ideas off of.

Billy: Well, yeah, we are good together. This relationship is unlike any other one that I have in my life. It’s a unique connection.

Victoria: I’ve got a lot of ground to cover on this video conference.

Nikki: You know, I’d feel more comfortable about this if i knew what your agenda was, aside from a show of strength and leadership.

Victoria: I intend to explain to the department heads that all of the acquisitions that we’ve acquired over the past few months will allow us to eliminate redundancies. And with this increase in capital, newman enterprises will be bigger and more powerful than ever.

Nikki: The question is, what do you intend to do with all that power?

Victoria: We’re gonna grow. I already have my eye on several acquisitions.

Nikki: Several?

Victoria: Yes. 5, maybe 10. This is the time to strike, mom.

Nikki: [ Sighs ]

Victoria: Mom, relax. I’m talking about smaller, fold-in acquisitions, not — not the newman-locke merger.

Nikki: I see the sense of that. I-it’s just the timing I’m concerned about. It was only last night that we learned that chance closed the investigation. You haven’t had time to process that. I know you said you don’t want to sit around wallowing in despair, but it seems like you’re going in the opposite direction at 100 miles per hour.

Victoria: The best way for me to recover is for the company to recover. Ashland was able to blow us off course for a bit, and we lost opportunities because we weren’t focused. That ends today, and I want the entire leadership team to know that we are back on track.

[ Knock on door ]

Sally: Just the man I wanted to see.

Nick: Me? Why?

Sally: Well, I just got victoria’s e-mail about the video call with the division heads. Is that the news that you said might be coming?

Nick: Actually, uh, that is why I came to see you. That is no longer a concern.

Sally: The investigation into ashland’s death — it’s not a worry anymore?

Nick: They closed the case. The final police report will conclude it was a terrible accident. So it’s over.

Victor: I just want to commend you, chance, for ending the investigation into ashland locke’s death.

Chance: There’s no need for that. I did what I did because I saw no point of putting victoria through any more emotional trauma.

Victor: Mm-hmm.

Chance: She’s been through enough. And I honestly believe nick acted in self-defense.

Victor: I agree with you.

Chance: I hope so because i do not want you to think for a second that I condone what you did — concealment of death, filing false police reports, obstruction of justice. Victor, these are crimes… crimes that should be investigated to the fullest extent of the law. But we did have some extenuating circumstances, didn’t we?

Victor: We certainly did, yeah. You’re a good cop, chance.

Chance: I agree that justice was served. But I need you to know that you cannot operate on the outside of the law with impunity. And the next time you cross the line, I will be there and I will make sure you are held accountable.

Chelsea: It’s not like that at all, chloe. I’m not falling for billy. Please give me more credit than that.

Chloe: [ Scoffs ] Well, i know what I saw.

Chelsea: No, you know what you think you saw. And you’re overreacting, just like you did with me and rey.

Chloe: Are you denying there was something between you and rey?

Chelsea: Come on. Chloe, every time you see me talking to a man, you’re like, “oh, no, there she goes again!”

Chloe: Oh, come on, chelsea. This is me you’re talking to. And I know the signs. I saw you interacting with rey, and I know how hard you took his death. And it wasn’t just because he was kind to you and connor. There was more to it.

Chelsea: We were just friends. That’s it. And the same is true with billy. Maybe you can’t have male friends without it turning into something more, but I can.

Chloe: [ Scoffs ]

Adam: You understand what I’m saying, don’t you?

Kevin: It’s not that difficult to comprehend.

Adam: [ Sighs ] You seem awfully calm. I mean, if someone had told me i was gonna be blamed for a negligent investigation and a sloppy cover-up, I would be really upset.

Kevin: I’m not flipping out because you’ve got it all wrong. That’s not what’s happening.

Adam: Okay. Whatever you say. You must know more than me. I just — I was just trying to help give you some clarity, kevin.

Kevin: I don’t need clarity.

Adam: Oh, no, of course not. Your ability to properly judge a situation is legendary. That’s your superpower, right? That and distinguishing between right and wrong.

Kevin: The idea of you dispensing moral guidance is ludicrous.

Adam: Who’s gonna look out for you, kevin? Michael isn’t D.A. Anymore. It’s not like the old days when he can get you out of jams.

Kevin: Even if there was a cover-up, I wouldn’t be responsible. I’m not a cop.

Adam: Well, if you think victor is gonna protect you with his son-in-law, that may be your biggest error in judgment yet, okay? You are the perfect fall guy, kevin. You are dumb and trusting, with a long history of shady behavior.

Kevin: Okay. I get it now. This isn’t about me. It’s about you and victor. You were dumb and trusting enough to think he would support you at newman. He turned his back on you, you’re out on your butt, and you want me to help you get payback.

[ Inhales sharply ] Yeah, that’s not gonna happen, so go find someone else to harass. Life… doesn’t stop for diabetes.

Victor: Well, chance, i appreciate your concern. But I think you should have been issuing those warnings to ashland locke while he was alive. That would have been more appropriate.

Chance: Victor, we did arrest him when he violated his restraining order. Unfortunately, that did not change his behavior.

Victor: He flouted the law many times over. As far as I’m concerned, whatever happened to that son of a bitch, he deserved. Sit down.

Chance: Look, I understand you think everything worked out the way it should have, but the end does not justify the means.

Victor: I have a very clear conscience.

Victor: I protected my family. And I’d do it again. Now, having said that, i appreciate the conflict that you feel right now. You feel a conflict between your duties as a cop, as a representative of the law, and your loyalty to your family. I promise you right now, I will not cause that kind of conflict again, okay?

Chance: I’m not worried about you, victor. I am worried about the rest of our family. Abby, nick, victoria, nikki, even adam. Everyone adores you. They would be crushed, absolutely crushed if you were arrested in jail.

Victor: I’ll take care of my family. And for your information, I’ve been in jail before.

Chance: I know.

Victor: Okay.

Chance: And abby told me how tough it was for everyone.

Victor: Mm.

Chance: And now you have more grandkids. They love you, victor. They look up to you. I look up to you. So if you’re not gonna be concerned about yourself, i would advise you to think about them.

Victor: I think about them all the time, chance.

Chance: All I’m saying, victor, is that I will not cover for you ever again.

Victor: Alright, chance. You have a nice day. I have things to do. If you don’t mind, show yourself out.

Sally: Wow. Well, your family must be relieved not to have your private lives splashed all over the internet.

Nick: Yeah, we’re all relieved we can move on from this.

Sally: Personally, I’m just glad I don’t have to navigate the moral minefield, trying to determine what we owe the public as a news organization and what’s best to keep quiet for the good of our parent corporation — ’cause it was giving me heart palpitations.

Nick: For some of us, it was a lot more than that.

Sally: I’m sorry. I won’t ask what changed since the last time we spoke about the situation, but I know that you were worried about the impending media firestorm.

Nick: I’m glad I was wrong about that. I really appreciate your discretion and understanding during the whole ordeal. It was really appreciated.

Sally: I’m glad I could be of service.

Nick: Someone with fewer scruples could have used this as an opportunity to exploit.

Sally: I know someone like that.

[ Sighs ] I probably owe you a warning.

Nick: About what?

Sally: Adam.

Adam: I really hope that you’ve saved all your civil servant pennies, kevin, because you’re gonna need a good, expensive lawyer.

Kevin: That’s never been a problem for me.

Adam: But your brother and your savior works for victor now. See, that’s a conflict of interest for michael. And like I told you, he can’t come to your rescue this time, kevin.

Kevin: This is not working.

Adam: What’s that?

Kevin: You’re trying to get me so worried that I abandon my common sense and say, “you know what? I will help adam in his never-ending battle against his family.” But I’m not concerned. You know why? Because there will be no blowback because there was no cover-up. Chance went by the book.

Adam: Mnh, you don’t know that.

Kevin: I do know that because he always does. It’s his thing. The same way your thing is to come up with some convoluted plan to irritate everybody, accomplish nothing. There is no dirt to dig up. Let it go.

Adam: [ Sighs ] Hey. It’s me. Yeah, it’s been a minute. But, uh, I’m actually not calling to catch up. I, uh — I need a job done. No matter who you are,

Nick: What is adam up to?

Sally: [ Sighs ] He thinks that there is more to the story of what happened that night. He thinks that there is something shady surrounding ashland’s death.

Nick: So, he’s suspicious about the accident.

Sally: And chance’s investigation. He has approached me more than once fishing for information. He thinks I have some inside knowledge.

Nick: And how’d you respond?

Sally: I told him I didn’t know anything. ‘Cause that’s the truth.

Nick: [ Chuckles ] Well, thank you for that.

Sally: I didn’t do it to protect you or your family. I — I was just furious that he played on my past feelings for him. He tried to manipulate me to get what he wanted. It was disgusting. And not only that — he tried to make me complicit in whatever move he’s planning against victor.

Nick: I’m very sorry for what adam has put you through. I’m not surprised, though. Anybody who gets involved with him eventually gets a very rude awakening.

Sally: Yeah, well, thank god I have chloe constantly reminding me of adam’s past failings.

Nick: Ah, yes, chloe. I’m sure she has some very colorful things to say about adam.

Sally: Mm-hmm. Yes, she does.

Nick: Well, good for you for listening to her. Other friends of hers haven’T.

Sally: Well, I don’t really have a choice. She won’t shut up about him.

[ Both laugh ] Anyway, I just wanted to make you aware that adam has been digging around, and if he’s coming to me for information, he’s probably going to other people, too.

Nick: Like chance.

Sally: Yes. And abby. And anyone who can help him, whether they know it or not.

Nick: Well, thank you for that information. I got to get to my office for the video conference.

Sally: You’re gonna be late. I have it all set up here. You should stay.

Chloe: I didn’t mean to offend you. I promise. I was just a little worried when I saw you talking to billy. I was just trying to be a good friend.

Chelsea: Would a good friend accuse me of trying to break up rey’s marriage?

Chloe: I wasn’t accusing you of anything. I was only saying that I could tell that you had strong feelings for rey. I didn’t say that you were acting on them or would have.

Chelsea: But it’s kind of what you were implying, based on a simple conversation I was having with billy. You’re reading into all sorts of things that just aren’t there.

Chloe: Okay, I feel like we need to take a step back. I wasn’t judging you. I promise. I just saw that there was a spark between you and rey. And maybe it was my imagination, but he was a wonderful guy. And he was supportive and forgiving. And, you know, let’s be honest. He was super hot. I mean, interrogate me all night long, detective. Am I right?

[ Both laugh ] He was your knight in shining armor, and he made it possible for you to get out of town and visit your mom. So it’s only natural that you would develop feelings for him, and especially after you spent all that time with him in minnesota. You were on the rebound. You were. And finally, the evil one was out of your life. And you were looking around. And now with rey gone, I just — I think you’re probably just a little lonely.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ] Rebound? Lonely? Desperate? Needy? It’s a constant refrain from you. Are you ever gonna see me differently?

Victoria: Hello. I wish that we could do this in person. And, um, we will. I promise.

[ Chuckles ] But for now, I would just like to thank you all for being here today. I’d like to give a quick shout-out to our new coo, my brother, nicholas newman. Nick, is there anything that you’d like to say to the assembled division heads?

Nick: Thank you, victoria. Hello, everyone. I’m very happy to be back in the fold at newman enterprises. I have met with most of you individually. Those of you who I haven’t, I’m sure I’ll meet up with you in the next couple of weeks. Just want you to know I’m very excited to be working with each and every one of you. I believe victoria has assembled a dream team, the best of the best, and I’m fired up to be a part of it.

Victoria: I am in 100% agreement with nicholas. This is an amazing group of people, especially at this moment when we are primed to take advantage of this incredible opportunity and to grow this company at an unprecedented rate. Over the past few months, we have faced some challenges — completing the merger and other unexpected obstacles. But we are strong and resilient and able to face anything that comes our way. And after everything that we have been through, we are primed and we are ready to reap the rewards of our hard work. So, let’s get to it. Do you struggle with occasional nerve aches

Victoria: Excellent. I love that suggestion, belinda. I’m gonna put you in touch with sally spectra. She’s the head of newman media. And the two of you can coordinate. Sally, what do you think?

Sally: I love it. Some synergy between the media division and strategic development. And the timing is crucial. I think if we can publish some stories about our properties before they’re fully developed, we can build a buzz for them and create some credibility for us as a source for breaking news.

Victoria: Great. So, the two of you will get together and hammer out the details. And, nick, you will follow up on updating the systems for the distribution centers on the west coast?

Nick: Yeah, just like we discussed. I’ll be digging into that this afternoon.

Victoria: Well, this has been a very productive call, and i appreciated hearing from each and every one of you. Great ideas. Please keep them coming. And I think that our decisions today will be the foundation for the monumental moves we’ll make going forward. So, thank you all so much for your time and for your commitment, and we’ll do this again soon. Have a good week.

[ Laptop closes ] Well, what do you think?

Nikki: You were right about this video conference. You were totally in your element. You were born for this.

Sally: Victoria was good. She’s tough, man. I mean, she put ashland and all that other stuff behind her. She was so poised and polished.

Nick: That is vick. She’s a lot like dad in that regard. You know, her kids will always be her priority, but when it comes to business, she is laser-focused.

Sally: You know, I like to think of myself as a survivor, but I just don’t know if I could soldier on like that after breaking up with a lying bastard of a husband and then him suddenly dying.

Nick: Yeah, she’s extremely resilient. It’s not always good the way she pushes herself. I mean, my mom has to stay on her all the time about looking after herself.

Sally: I feel bad buying into adam’s characterization of her. I mean, he views her as this pampered, spoiled princess. I’m embarrassed to admit it, but when I was with him, it made sense.

Nick: Yeah. Adam has this unique way of getting people to share his distorted view of the world.

Sally: Well, after that call, it was clear to me that victoria is not a princess. She is a warrior, a leader. Listening to her made me inspired to make newman media a success.

Nick: And I have no doubts that you will. I’m really glad you’re on our team, sally. And I’m sure you have a lot of work to do, so I’m gonna let you get back to it. Good job. I’ll see you around.

Sally: You too.

[ Sighs ]

Chloe: Everything you’re saying is out of context. I’m telling you this out of concern. I’m not judging.

Chelsea: So now you’re back to babysitting me?

Chloe: It’s not like that, chelsea.

Chelsea: Well, that’s what it feels like. I’m capable of making my own decisions. I’ve been thinking very clearly lately, so you don’t need to warn me about billy. He’s my friend and a colleague.

Chloe: And an ex.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ]

Chloe: And johnny’s father. It is very easy for the lines to get blurred.

Chelsea: Nothing’s blurry, chloe.

Chloe: Maybe not yet, but trust me — I know because billy turns on that abbott charm, and you lose perspective. You start to think everything means a little bit more than it does.

Chelsea: That’s what happened with you, not me.

Chloe: You have to be vigilant about this.

Chelsea: Oh, god.

Chloe: Billy is — is like a six-foot-tall bucket of charm. He can make you feel special without even trying.

Chelsea: How desperate do you think I am?

Chloe: It’s not about being desperate or needy. It’s about being vulnerable.

Chelsea: Okay, I hones– I can’t believe you’re saying these things to me. I really can’T.

Chloe: Everybody needs someone in their life who has the guts to say something when stuff starts getting out of hand and you need a sane, objective point of view to keep you from jumping off the edge.

Adam: That looked intense. When I left you two earlier, it seemed like you were on your way back to becoming bffs.

Chelsea: Well, good friends sometimes get in arguments. Not that you would know anything about that.

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Wow. Right out of the gate, just taking a shot at me for not having any friends. Someone is defensive about something.

Chelsea: So, how long were you spying on us?

Adam: I was not eavesdropping.

Chelsea: No? So, you must have a lot of time on your hands these days since you don’t have a job. You can just listen in on other people’s conversations?

Adam: Something like that, yeah. It’s given me some time to catch up on my podcasts. I actually caught the one of you and billy the other day. Provocative. I mean, billy was annoying as ever, but you made up for it. I love the way that you poked holes in his overinflated ego.

Chelsea: I have a lot of experience dealing with arrogant men.

Adam: It was highly entertaining.

Chelsea: Thanks. I appreciate that. But billy has actually decided that the podcast is a distraction from his actual job.

Adam: Billy has an actual job?

Chelsea: [ Chuckles ]

Adam: I thought, uh, lily was just keeping him on the payroll for appearances’ sake and to keep his mother happy.

Chelsea: Well, regardless, he doesn’t have time for the podcast anymore, so… that’s the end of that.

Nick: Hey. Mom said you were here. I noticed you did your video conference from home this morning. You avoiding the office?

Victoria: Maybe a little.

Nick: Why?

Victoria: I’m just waiting for the murmurs about ashland to quiet down. You know, even when people don’t ask, I know they’re curious about how I’m handling his death, and I’m just not interested in having that conversation.

Nick: I get it. You certainly gave the department heads a lot to talk about with all your announcements at the meeting.

Victoria: How do you think it went?

Nick: If sally is any indication, they’re ready to follow you into battle.

Victoria: Good.

Nick: I didn’t know how serious you were about all the acquisitions, though. I thought maybe you were just trying to grab everyone’s attention.

Victoria: Well, I will show you how serious I am.

Nick: What’s this?

Victoria: It’s a list of all of the companies that I want to acquire.

Nick: All of them?

Victoria: Yeah. Why not? I mean, I think we should put some feelers out for the ones at the top of the list. You do see the value in bringing them, right?

Nick: Yeah. They’re all profit generators. They’ll generate earnings from day one.

Victoria: Mm-hmm. So we should see where the negotiating starting point is for each one of them.

[ Both laugh ]

Nick: You aren’t messing around, vick.

Victoria: Well, do you disagree with my plan?

Nick: [ Chuckles ] I mean, i think we’re biting off more than we can chew. I think we need to focus and prioritize on folding the locke communication groups into newman.

Victoria: Well, I have taken that into consideration. But if we wait for the perfect time, we might miss out on some golden opportunities. Now is the time to be bold.

Nikki: Ah.

Victor: Hi, baby.

Nikki: Hi.

Victor: I didn’t know you’d be home so soon. How is your day going?

Nikki: Well, victoria held a video conference with all of the department heads. She put to rest any concerns they may have had about her ability to lead the company. She mapped out a 1-year, 5-year, 10-year plan —

Victor: I know. I was on the call.

Nikki: Oh. You didn’t have your camera on.

Victor: No, because I didn’t want to detract from her moment in the sun.

Nikki: So, what did you think? Do you approve of the direction she’s taking the company? Woman tc: My a1c stayed here, it needed to be here.

Victoria: Are you worried that we’re taking on too much debt with all of these maneuvers?

Nick: That’s a lot to finance.

Victoria: Well, not as much as you might think. You know, I’ve worked out the math based on the appropriate price ranges for these companies. And it’s not like we’ll be leveraging that much because we will be eliminating redundancies and unprofitable divisions. And that’s how we’re gonna afford a good percentage of these new acquisitions.

Nick: It’s a smart way to do it — if we do it at all.

Victoria: You still don’t seem convinced.

Nick: I just don’t think there’s anything wrong with slowing down, getting a feel for the landscape, and being methodical.

Victoria: Well, I’ll show you the numbers and then you’ll see that we can’t afford not to do this.

Nick: Well, I can’t help but feel like these moves are about more than that.

Victoria: You know what? You’re right. There is something else that is making me feel extremely confident in my position. You haven’t guessed what that is yet.

Nick: No. Tell me.

Victoria: It’s you, nick.

Victor: I think victoria was wonderful. I couldn’t have been happier with what she said.

Nikki: Good. I’m glad.

Victor: You know, considering what she went through with ashland locke, I was afraid that her self-confidence would be shattered. Not a sign of it. She has fully recovered.

Nikki: These were aggressive moves, much like what you might make.

Victor: Mm-hmm.

Nikki: And I think that victoria’s trying to prove that ashland couldn’t defeat her. I mean, no one can.

Victor: Nothing wrong with that.

Nikki: Well, of course you would say that. She’s taking a page out of your playbook.

Victor: And I would have done exactly the same thing had i been in her shoes. I couldn’t be prouder.

Adam: Well, I’m sorry that billy is pulling the plug on this podcast, for your sake. It seems like you were really enjoying yourself.

Chelsea: I was.

Adam: Maybe you should start your own podcast.

Chelsea: Well, actually, billy said chancellor-winters offered to continue producing it and I could go solo.

Adam: That’s even better. Someone’s putting up the cash, and — and you won’t have to deal with billy anymore.

Chelsea: It wouldn’t be the same. The whole reason it was a success was because of billy and me and our back-and-forth.

Adam: I don’t know, chelsea. I think you’re selling yourself short.

Chelsea: Thanks. Well, no one wants to listen to me drone on and on for an hour by myself. I mean, even I wouldn’t want to listen to that.

Adam: Well, that’s saying something because I know how much you love the sound of your own voice.

Chelsea: [ Laughs ] Very funny. Very funny.

Adam: Come on. This is an easily solvable problem. Just find a new co-host. Bring on weekly guests. Revamp the whole thing. New format. Make it your own.

Chelsea: It’s not a bad idea. I don’t know. The thing is, I feel like i started to get my groove. I know that sounds stupid.

Adam: Not at all.

Chelsea: This podcast was giving me direction. I felt so inspired, and it was resonating with people.

[ Sighs ] It made me feel less invisible.

Adam: [ Sighs ] Um…yeah, I-I understand what you’re saying, but I — I just really hope that you’re not talking like this in front of connor.

Chelsea: What? Why would you say that?

Adam: Because I don’t want him to be affected by what you’re dealing with, chelsea.

Chelsea: What are you talking about? That’s your attitude? You think I’m an unfit mother if I don’t act cheery all the time?

Adam: No, no, no, th– that’s not what I meant.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ]

Adam: Connor’s a sensitive kid. He picks up on our emotions, okay? He knows when things aren’t going right with us. I try not to talk to him about family issues for the same reason — I don’t want him to worry about me.

Chelsea: I got it. Put on my game face. Fair enough.

[ Cellphone pings ]

Adam: I have to go.

Chelsea: Where are you running off to? You’re don’t have a job anymore.

Adam: I’ll see you later, okay?

Chelsea: Bye.

[ Sighs heavily ] Girls trip.

Victoria: You know, the reason that I am confident that we can accomplish all of these things is because I know that i have you on my side. I have — I have total faith in you that you’re always gonna have my back. After what happened that night, I — I mean, I just know you’re always gonna be there for me. If you hadn’t shown up, I might not have survived, nicholas.

Nick: Vick, come on. I don’t like thinking that way.

Victoria: But it’s true. You saved me.

[ Sighs ] If you hadn’t been there, i don’t know what would have happened, and I just want you to know that you are the best brother and best colleague that I could ever ask for.

Nick: You don’t have to say that.

Victoria: But it’s true, and I don’t say it enough. You’re just the absolute best, and I’m — I’m really looking forward to everything that we’re gonna do together at newman. And I have this idea that there’s absolutely nothing we can’t accomplish. And I intend to put that theory to the test.

Victor: Watching our daughter run that meeting, I was impressed. Really. I mean, nicholas did his end, and you chimed in whenever necessary. The whole thing was like watching a well-oiled machine, you know? So, uh… I think that victoria managed to unify the newman family.

Nikki: Well, you sound just as proud of that as you are of her business agenda.

Victor: Even more so.

Nikki: Well, I’m thrilled working with nicholas and victoria. It gives me the opportunity to see them every day, and then i can watch them flourish on their own.

[ Sighs ] Thank goodness ashland was not able to drive a wedge between all of us like he obviously wanted to. Our family is stronger than ever.

Victor: Yeah. Except for adam.

Nikki: Well, I’m sorry, for your sake, that he and victoria never reconciled.

Victor: That has been a problem for many years now. I’m trying hard to solve it, you know? Well, you know how hard I tried to integrate him into the family. Man.

[ Glass scrapes ]

[ Exhales heavily ] He has never forgiven me for being raised without a father on that farm in kansas. Never has. It’s not my fault. I wanted to raise him here in this time, but his mother didn’t want any part of that. I’m still paying for that. Never felt a part of this family. It saddens me. It really does. But let’s celebrate our daughter. She did a wonderful job, and so did all of you. Cheers, my love.

Chloe: Oh, hey! This is a nice surprise. I wasn’t expecting to see you here.

Kevin: Yes, I will come down and file a report, but you need to tell the chief and detective chancellor what happened. This is of the utmost importance. No, no, I’m not overstating it. This is official police business.

[ Sighs ] Okay, I went to the library to return some books — what? No. No. Miles has some picture books that don’t fit in the return slot outside, so I had to go inside. I was in there for 90 seconds, 2 minutes, tops, came back out, and my car had been broken into.

Chloe: What?

Kevin: Yes, I’m getting to the part that is official police business. My messenger bag — that was a gift from my beautiful partner — was taken, and inside that messenger bag [Sighs] Was my gcpd laptop.

[ Door handle thuds ]

Adam: Did you get it?

Lucas: Yep.

Adam: Get in here, lucas. Did anybody see you?

Lucas: No. But you never told me he worked for the police. You know that increases my risk. It’s gonna cost you a bit more.

Adam: Fine.

Lucas: Oh, that is a nice bag. I want it.

Victoria: Thank you.

Billy: I mean it, vick. You’re so impressive. You’re an amazing woman. And I’m — I’m just so proud of you.

Victoria: [ Chuckles ]

Billy: And to be honest, I’m a tiny bit jealous.

[ Chuckles ]

Victoria: You mentioned earlier at the club that, uh — that you felt a bit at sea lately.

Billy: Yeah.

Victoria: What is that about?

Billy: Just thinking about making some changes.

Victoria: Care to share?

Billy: Nope, not tonight. Because tonight is all about you and your fresh start.

[ Knock on door ]

Nikki: Good morning, darling.

Victoria: Morning, mama.

Nikki: Mwah!

Victoria: Come in.

Nikki: Thank you.

[ Door closes ] Alright, now, first things first. Were you able to sleep last night?

Victoria: My goodness, yes, like a log. It was glorious.

Nikki: I’m so glad. Well, I have breakfast and tea. I didn’t know if you would be up to it, but I thought maybe we could go outside in the garden. It’s a lovely day.

Victoria: Well, you know, here is fine.

Nikki: Okay.

Victoria: Thank you.

Nikki: Uh-huh. I wasn’t sure if maybe you had come home too soon.

Victoria: No. Actually, it was exactly what i needed, stepping back into my old life. No. Scratch that. Stepping forward into my new life. And we should start planning right here, right now.

Nikki: For what?

Victoria: Life after ashland.

Victor: Hey, son.

Nick: Hey.

Victor: Just got your text saying you wanted to meet. I’m having some breakfast. Would you care to join me?

Nick: I’m not hungry. Thanks.

Victor: How do you feel?

Nick: I’m alright. How are you?

Victor: I have never been better.

Nick: Good.

Victor: Mm.

Nick: Alright, so, here’s the deal. Just because chance has decided to shut down his investigation of looking into ashland’s death, it doesn’t mean it’s over for me.

Victor: Mm-hmm. Is that why you rushed out of here last night?

Nick: Look, I’m just trying to work through it, you know, dad. A man died because of my actions.

Victor: How do you feel now?

Kevin: Chance! I tried calling. I tried e-mailing. I figured there had to be a good reason you went radio silent. So, what’s the word? Where are we at with the locke investigation?

Chance: That’s what I wanted to talk to you about.

Kevin: Ah, away from the prying eyes of everybody at the station. Great idea. So, how did the D.A. React when you presented all of our evidence, how the body was moved, how the accident was staged? I mean, you all but handed them a guilty verdict on a silver platter.

Chance: I didn’t do it.

Kevin: What? You didn’t take the evidence to the D.A.? After all the hours we spent building the case?

Chance: I came to the conclusion that there was no probable cause to believe a crime was committed.

Kevin: No probable cause? With all of the evidence we uncovered? Is this coming from paul? Because we need to explain to him that —

Chance: It was my decision, kevin.

Billy: Good morning.

Lily: Good morning.

Billy: You know what they say about the early bird.

Lily: Um… she rules the world?

Billy: No. She misses her morning mocha and croissant in bed.

Lily: Oh, is that how the saying goes?

Billy: Historically.

Lily: Well, I didn’t want to wake you. Thank you.

Billy: Oh, thank you very much for that. Getting an early start on the day?

Lily: Yeah. I just have a lot to catch up on since I got back from my trip.

Billy: Okay. Can you spare a few minutes for a morning chat over coffee?

Lily: Uh, it depends. Is it work-related?

Billy: I would like to pick up our conversation that we were having earlier about me splitting my time between my corporate responsibilities and the podcast and where i ultimately want to be.

Chelsea: Enjoying your new life of leisure?

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Yeah. You know, no work, no responsibilities. It’s pretty great.

Chelsea: Why are you reading the newman media website? Trying to stay abreast on how things are faring under the new ceo?

Adam: Checking updates on the, uh, demise of ashland locke.

Chelsea: What’s left to be written? Bad guy loses control of his car, ends up at the bottom of a ravine.

Adam: Assuming that’s all there was to it.

Chelsea: Well, your family must be thrilled to be done with ashland, have all of this behind them.

Nick: I was angry and frustrated because you once again decided you needed to control the situation. You made a unilateral decision without any regard whatsoever to the people who were directly involved.

Victor: Namely, you.

Nick: Yeah. Me. I was going through hell, dad. You know, I thought I killed a man. Then I had to grapple with this idea that maybe he got up and walked away on his own and that my hands were clean. Then later, I just learn that you covered up everything I did and I was right from the beginning.

Victor: Son, ashland locke caused his own death, okay?

Nick: [ Sighs ] I guess if you, uh, look at it in, like, the big picture, yes, you could say that. But because of what you did, dad, I was forced to lie to the police. Now, that might be second nature for other people, but it is not me, dad. That is not who I am. So I needed to struggle with this idea of doing what was best for victoria and her children, for my kids, for you and mom, or doing what was the right thing and what was right for me.

Victor: Well, you had to be a good father, good son, and a brave brother.

Nick: Well, now that I’ve had some time and distance from the situation… I understand you were just trying to be a good father, too.

Victor: [ Breathes deeply ] I appreciate you saying that, son. Everything I did was for you and victoria.

Nick: I know. You and your security team — you know, you had no idea what went on in that house after i got there. It all happened so fast. I barely had time to think. But you — you acted on instinct. At your core, you are predictably…

[Chuckles] Protective. And you will do anything to save your children.

Victor: And that’ll never change, son.

Nick: Well, vick came to that realization faster than I did. She really is a lot more like you than any of us could ever be.

Victor: [ Breathes deeply ]

Chelsea: Are you saying there’s something else about ashland’s death that’s being kept under wraps?

Adam: Oh, hell if I know. I learned about what’s going on with my family the same way all the other lowly non-newmans do. I read about it.

Chelsea: [ Chuckles ]

Chloe: Oh. Hi, guys.

Chelsea: Hi.

Adam: Chloe. I would say it’s a pleasure, but, um…

Chloe: Ah. Yeah. Well, don’t let me interrupt.

Adam: No, no, no, you’re not. I, uh — I really hope the two of you can get back to being a dynamic duo again.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ] Mm. Nice outfit.

Chloe: Oh, thanks. It’s one of yours.

Chelsea: I know, but it never would have gone into production if it wasn’t for you.

Chloe: [ Chuckles ] Um, I — I heard your latest podcast episode.

Chelsea: Yeah?

Chloe: Yeah, you really put it all out there, don’t you?

Chelsea: It’s cathartic.

Chloe: It’s cheaper than therapy.

Chelsea: True. True. And it’s fun.

Chloe: Yeah, sounds like it.

Chelsea: It is, and I’m — I’m just using a different part of my brain, you know? I get to just go on instinct.

Chloe: Without the constant criticism.

Chelsea: Oh, no, actually. I get it from both sides now. Our subscribers, our new listeners. But I get to give it back, too, to billy. He’s the best. You know, nothing’s off limits. He’s constantly entertaining. You know, doing a podcast, you kind of feel like you’re walking on a tightrope. You could fall at any minute. But with billy, I feel safe ’cause when I start to lose my footing and feel like I’m gonna fall, he’ll fall to take the heat off me, if that makes any sense.

[ Both laugh ]

Chloe: Well, I’m really happy for you. I really am.

Chelsea: Well, thanks. You know, I’m just so used to editing myself. I would always hold back to make sure I would say what’s acceptable.

Chloe: Well, now you can finally let loose.

Chelsea: Exactly. And it was kind of cool how it happened, you know? I was just blatantly honest with billy about how painfully depressing his podcast was, and instead of getting defensive, he asked me to help him make it better. And the other stuff — it just all happened organically, so…

Chloe: I’m sorry that you could let loose with billy in a way that you couldn’t with me. I mean, I’m kind of low-key jealous, but I’m really happy that you found a safe place to land. I really am. And I can see it’s exactly what you needed.

Billy: I’ve done a lot of thinking about the tug-of-war between my responsibility as your right hand and the podcasts. And I think I figured out what i want to be when I grow up.

Lily: Okay.

Billy: Look, I think you know that things have been a little sideways for me, and I feel like I realized that and I put myself in that recording studio in order to avoid dealing with that. And that is not fair to you, and it is not fair to this company.

Lily: Yeah. Well, thank you for saying that. I’m not really sure where this is leading.

Billy: I’m making a course correction, and I have found a replacement.

Lily: A replacement? I mean, billy, this is really fast. I think you should have talked to me about it first.

Billy: A replacement as host of “the grinning soul,” someone that I think is gonna be great, someone with a skewed view of the world, much like me, that throws caution into wind.

Lily: Okay, so, you’re staying on as coo?

Billy: Fully committed. I’m here. I’m walking away from my other responsibilities at the podcast so I can focus on you and chancellor-winters. So, we can turn the recording studio into a meditation room or a place for you to do yoga, whatever you need. What do you think?

Lily: I-I mean [Sighs] Is this what you want? Or are you just saying it ’cause you think it’s what I want to hear?

Nikki: Well, it’s nice to finally have some closure on the whole ashland ordeal. He did meet with a rather violent untimely death, didn’t he?

Victoria: That was all ashland’s doing. The real tragedy is what nicholas is going through. You know, he didn’t ask to be put in this position. I thank god every morning when i wake up for putting him there, for saving me.

Nikki: Oh, well, so do I. But don’t you think you should take some time to deal with how low ashland spiraled? He wanted to do you harm.

Victoria: Mom, I love you, and I think I know where this is coming from, but you have to understand something. I dealt with the fallout from ashland’s lies for a very long time. It felt like a weight on me. It colored every decision that i made.

Nikki: I know.

Victoria: And now that he’s gone, I’m not gonna wallow in — in how everything went so wrong.

Nikki: Well, I don’t think that you should. I’m just saying maybe you should dig down to some deeper emotions.

Victoria: I have. I have. I’ve — I’ve mourned ashland in my own way. And I’ve dug very deep. And what I realized, mom, is that I feel — I feel free. I mean, at least I’m starting to.

Nikki: I think that’s wonderful.

Victoria: [ Chuckles ] You know what? Last night, I even had a drink with billy, of all people.

Nikki: Oh, well… don’t, uh — don’t go overboard there.

Victoria: [ Laughs ] No. It was — it was nice. We talked about the future. We toasted to it. It felt good thinking about what’s to come. And I’m ready to start plotting that course.

Nikki: Now?

Victoria: Why not? There’s no time like the present. Let’s be bold, mom.

Nikki: What did you have in mind?

Nick: Do you have any idea how lucky you are that chance decided not to continue with this investigation? You could have gone to prison for this cover-up.

Victor: Well, let me just say, I’m very grateful to my son-in-law.

Nick: I was surprised and relieved that he decided to close the case.

Victor: And to be frank with you, I was surprised at the sloppiness of my team. They left evidence behind.

Nick: Can I assume you relieved them of their duties?

Victor: What do you think?

Nick: The bottom line is, you got lucky this time. When are you gonna stop tempting fate, dad? What if chance had followed this thing to the end and acted on the evidence?

Victor: Then I would have handled it, son.

Nick: Yeah. That’s what worries me, too.

Kevin: Walk me through this, please, because I really want to understand how you went from single-minded determination to get to the truth of what happened that night to bygones.

Chance: There was a lot that went into my decision.

Kevin: Like the ring that fell out of ashland’s pocket, the recovered video evidence that shows a guy tossing a cigarette and getting into ashland’s car, someone who clearly was not ashland and was very eager to cover up his tracks. Oh, oh, and the fact that both nick and victoria thought that ashland was dead because they couldn’t find a pulse. All signs pointing to them being right. You had the evidence, more than enough. Convictions have been gotten on less.

Chance: Kevin, kevin, I made the right choice. I mean, it was a tragic accident.

Kevin: Keep telling yourself that. Say it a few hundred more times, and maybe you’ll start to believe it. But I doubt it. And whether or not you pursue this evidence, it exists. And if it comes to light, it’s gonna be really, really bad. It could mean serious blowback for both of us. (Cat 1) friskies world!

Billy: Of course you factor in to my decision. I love you. We live together. We work together. And so, yeah, I mean, I realized that the podcast was taking up too much space in my life, and i promised myself and I promised you that I would be accountable. Everything I said was not gonna happen was actually what was happening.

Lily: Yeah, I mean, it’s a big step.

Billy: I want to be a man of my word. And I told my mother after chanccomm that I would not let her down.

Lily: Right. So, what I’m hearing is that you’re doing this because it’s being demanded of you.

Billy: No. What you’re hearing me say is that I want to be someone with integrity, right? Look, I don’t want to come here and do a half-assed job when everybody else is putting their blood, sweat, and tears into this company. I don’t want to be that guy. That’s my call.

Lily: Billy, are you sure? Honestly. ‘Cause I don’t want you to end up resenting me down the road.

Billy: [ Sighs ] I don’t like the feeling that something was changing between us, okay, and the connection that we share. And I don’t ever want to take advantage of you or this situation. This is where I want to be. This is where I belong.

Chelsea: I don’t mean to go on and on about how wonderful it is working with billy.

Chloe: No. Don’t minimize it. You deserve to be happy.

Chelsea: I really needed this job. You know. I was so deep in my own head, i never thought I’d find my way out.

Chloe: [ Chuckles ] So now you’re gonna try to sort out billy’s?

[ Both laugh ]

Chelsea: It is a three-ring circus in there.

Chloe: Yeah. Well, you weren’t having an easy time of it when we were working on the line at fenmore’s, and, you know, I-I get why you had to go on hiatus from designing.

Chelsea: Is that what we’re calling it?

Chloe: [ Laughs ] Hey, you could make a return to fashion any time you want. Everyone loves a good comeback story. But you were having a hard time after rey died. He would be so proud of you now. Almost as proud as your bestie.

Chelsea: Okay, bestie, what about you?

Chloe: What about me?

Chelsea: Is everything okay? I can tell. Something’s off.

Chloe: [ Chuckles ] Come on. You know me.

Chelsea: I do know you. Which is why, even when things are a little tense between us, I can read you. And I can tell something’s wrong. So, out with it.

Nick: Do you have any idea how big of a gamble you were taking? Chance had the evidence. He could have gone to the D.A. And I know you were starting to worry.

Victor: I wasn’t worried about myself, okay?

Nick: Well, you should have been worried about yourself. This thing could have gone sideways at any point.

Victor: But the point is, it didn’T.

Nick: That’s it? That’s what you’re taking away from this? Dad, when are you gonna stop taking these risks?

Victor: Son, I will never stop protecting and safeguarding my family. You got a problem with that?

[ Footsteps approaching ] Abby.

Abby: Hi. Is this a boys’ brunch, or can anyone join?

Victor: Goodness, no. Come on in. I haven’t seen you for so long.

Abby: Hi, dad.

[ Smooches ]

Victor: How’s your boy?

Abby: He’s good.

Victor: Yeah?

Abby: Um, hey, nick. Is everything okay?

Nick: Yeah. It’s fine.

Victor: You understand that chance closed the case on ashland’s death?

Abby: Yeah. He — he did it to protect you and to make sure that nick and victoria didn’t have to go through more than they already have.

Nick: Well, that couldn’t have been an easy decision for him to make.

Abby: But it was the right one.

Nick: Yeah. Well, I will always be grateful. I got to go. I’ve got a pile of work, uh, to get to.

Victor: Alright, son. Speak with you soon.

Nick: Yeah. Bye, abby.

Abby: Bye, nick.

[ Sighs ] I am so glad that this is over and that nothing bad can happen to you.

Victor: I intend to speak with chance later and thank him.

Abby: I don’t think you should do that.

Chance: Kevin, the conclusion for the investigation is in the police report, if anyone went to the trouble to look for it. And it’s not that simple. Some of the information is redacted. It’s not all available to the public.

Kevin: What are you saying? You think it won’t be found? Victor covered up how ashland died. You know it. I know it. So do the newmans. So do the security guys who botched the job and got id’d on video.

Chance: There is nothing to worry about, okay?

Kevin: [ Scoffs ] The truth has a funny way of coming out, no matter how you try and hide it. I’ll bet victor thought he was in the clear, that there was no way we could track his involvement. Anyone that’s ever tried to get away with anything convinces themselves of that. My mother, my brother — both of them have played loose and fast with the law, and it has come back to bite them. Me. Me! I have made mistakes, too. It’s why I have worked so hard to turn my life around. I made a commitment to chloe and to my kids to be the best person I could be, just like you did with your family.

Chance: Kevin, I did a full investigation, and I put everything in that report. No one is trying to get away with anything.

Kevin: If this case revolved around anyone other than victor, you would be pursuing a conviction with everything you’ve got.

Chance: I didn’t do this for victor. I’m amber, I’ve lost 128 pounds with golo,

Nikki: Darling, I love seeing this renewed strength and energy after everything that’s happened. I know what you went through. But our employees don’T. I mean, consider the optics. As far as the rest of the world is concerned, ashland died in a tragic car accident.

And I will acknowledge my late ex-spouse briefly, noting without irony that newman enterprises would not be the company that it is without his — mm, let’s call it dedication to growing our reach and our holdings. And I’m going to put an end to all of the rumors and the speculations, any doubts or questions about the future of our company.

Nikki: Well, you know, even though he stepped down from newman/locke, there are still a lot of employees who are loyal to him.

Victoria: Mother, I’m aware of that, and I will make it clear that they are free to leave, but that no other company will offer them the opportunity that newman enterprises can, starting today, because nothing is in our way now.

Chance: I am not protecting my father-in-law.

Kevin: I never said that. But prepare yourself because that’s what anyone on the outside is gonna think — “there go the newmans again, standing shoulder to shoulder against all foes.” You’re a part of that family. They’re gonna say you’re ignoring the facts.

Chance: The fact is that ashland was a threat that night. He showed up to his ex’s house uninvited, seeking revenge. Now, whichever way you want to look at it, man, his death was unintentional, whether it was caused by a car accident or someone protecting their sister in self-defense. Now, I thought it was best not to drag the family through the ordeal of whatever charges the D.A. Might throw at him, especially because that accidental death, man — that could have been a scandal for the real victim here — victoria.

Kevin: Make no mistake. I fully agree. But that should have been the D.A.’S call, not yours.

Chloe: I’m just dealing with a lot, and some days seem bigger than others.

Chelsea: Are you scared to spill the beans because of the animosity between sally and me? I mean, you’re smart to be cautious. I can’t promise not to throw it in her face if you trash-talk her.

Chloe: [ Sighs ] We do know each other really well, then, don’t we?

Chelsea: Mm-hmm. I don’t know what’s going on with sally, but I do know that you are the smartest, most intuitive, hardest-working person I know, and she’s lucky to have you.

Chelsea: Yeah! And if you want me to — I don’t know — come up with the world’s most uncomfortable dress that gets tighter and tighter as the day goes on…

Chloe: Yeah. You know, growing pains, right? And, uh, you know, maybe one day I’ll be in a great position like you’ve landed in.

Billy: Hey.

Chloe: Hi.

Billy: Sorry to interrupt. How you doing? Good to see you both.

Chloe: Good. Good to see you. And, hey, congratulations on the show. You really hit a home run with this one.

Billy: Yeah. No. Thank you for that. I appreciate it. Um, can I steal you for a second, please?

Chloe: Oh, yeah, um, you guys chat about your show. Um, I’ll grab another drink.

Chelsea: Okay.

Billy: See you.

Chloe: Bye.

Chelsea: I’m actually glad I’ve got you here. I have a great idea for a new episode. I don’t know why I didn’t think about it sooner.

Billy: Can we, uh, put that on pause for a minute?

Chelsea: Sure. Is something wrong?

Billy: [ Sighs ] I need to inform you that I — I will be stepping away from the podcast in order to focus on my day job.

Chelsea: The podcast is over? Just like that?

Billy: Well, it doesn’t have to be. I think you should take over, and chancellor-winters is 100% behind you.

Chelsea: That’s the worst idea you’ve ever had.

Billy: I don’t think so. I think you are engaging. You are talented. You have a very interesting way of seeing the world and a wonderful way of expressing it.

Chelsea: Hold on. So…you’re willing to walk away just like that from something you clearly love?

Billy: I got to make a choice, chelsea. And the podcasts have been a distraction from my commitments, from —

Chelsea: From your real life? Billy, you have never been more real or more alive than when you’re sitting behind that microphone, diving into the real questions, the — the messy and complicated aspects of life that make it so interesting.

Billy: Well, now you get to be that voice.

Chelsea: But it’s not gonna be the same. Or nearly as much fun. Trust me — I got plenty of experience talking to myself when I was locked up. The whole point of me doing this is because I was doing it with someone who really gets me, someone who’s smart and funny and —

Billy: Look, I know. I am a super fun guy to work with. Look, chelsea, it’s not like i didn’t enjoy our time together — because I did. I thought it went really, really well. This whole partnership came out of left field, and it was a very pleasant surprise. But I made a commitment to chancellor-winters, and I need to do this for many reasons.

Chelsea: Okay, let me get this straight. You’re in a rush to get back into a world where you recently admitted you don’t belong? Makes a lot of sense.

Billy: I got to show that I do belong. I got to see this through.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ] Well, when you realize you’re making a mistake — and you will — I am going to come up with a million ways to say “i told you so.”

Billy: [ Chuckles ] That’s a real comfort.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ]

Billy: I got to go.

Chelsea: Yeah. Got to get back to your real life.

Chloe: Okay. I know we have some work to do on our friendship, but, girl, let me tell you… do not go there.

Victor: You mean I’m not allowed to call my son-in-law and thank him for what he did? What am I missing?

Abby: Dad, he just needs some time to work through this.

Victor: Oh.

Abby: You know how chance is. He has a very strict sense of what’s right and wrong.

Victor: Yeah, but he did the right thing.

Abby: He doesn’t really see it that way.

Victor: Yet.

Abby: You know why this is such a difficult decision for him, right? I mean, chance — he sees everything as black or white, and this is a gray area. He’s not used to operating there.

Victor: Sweetheart, when it comes to protecting one’s family, there’s no gray area. As a father and as a husband, he should understand that now.

Kevin: Chance, what happened? I know you — or, at least, I thought I did. This isn’t you.

Chance: Justice was done, kevin. That is the bottom line. I ran this by the chief, as well, and he agrees. I made the right decision.

Kevin: So, what about victor? He just gets away with this like he does everything else? That man doesn’t just break the rules. He obliterates them.

Chance: Kevin, for everyone in the room, justice was done. Now, this was my call to make. It is over for us, and it is over for them.

Kevin: Wait. But what if this —

Chance: Kevin — kevin — kevin! Thank you for your help really. Thank you. You did a damn good job, and i really hope that we can work on something in the future. But it is time to move on. I’ll see you back at the station.

Adam: Kevin. I couldn’t help overhearing. Sounds like you’ve been left in one hell of a spot.

Lily: Hey. Where’d you go?

Billy: Well, I had to go have a conversation with my podcast partner and share the life-changing decision.

Lily: Uh-oh. Hope that went well.

Billy: And I wanted to pick up something that I’ve been holding onto for the right moment, and lo and behold —

Lily: Uh-oh. Turquoise ear pods?

Billy: Ah, that’s very funny. No, I actually think you’re really gonna love this.

Lily: [ Gasps ] Wow. Oh, it’s a yin and yang necklace. It’s beautiful. Is this because we’re opposites?

Billy: [ Chuckles ] No. It’s two pieces coming together to form a whole, much like us, two essential parts that are stronger together.

Lily: Mm. Thank you.

Nikki: Well, it certainly sounds like you have some bold plans in mind.

Victoria: Nothing changes if nothing changes.

Nikki: Oh, well, that is true. But don’t you think we should go over to newman tower for this video presentation? I mean, you’ll look more polished, more poised.

Victoria: Mother, nobody is gonna fixate on what’s going on in the back of my screen. Besides, I don’t want another minute to go by with our team wondering what’s going on with the state of the corporation and its leadership.

Nikki: Okay, okay, but why don’t I just jot down some notes you can use as a guide? That way, you know exactly what you want to say and how you want to say it.

Victoria: I’m speaking to you as my co-ceo, not my mother. This is business. I need to know that you trust me on this and that I have your full support.

Nikki: Well, yes, of course you do. I-I think you’re making the right decision. It’s very wise of you to get ahead of the internal issues and make a show of strength and decisiveness.

Victoria: Good. ‘Cause I already know exactly what I want to say. And I’ve reached out to nicholas and all of our department heads. My true leadership at newman enterprises is about to begin.

Victor: Okay, sweetheart.

Chance: Abby. Well, when you asked me to stop by, you didn’t say my wife would be here.

Victor: Well, in fact, your wife was quite adamant that i not call you.

Chance: Why is that?

Abby: You know, I just, um — I thought that you were busy, so, um… I’m gonna go relieve the nanny. See you at home.

Chance: I love you.

Abby: Love you. Bye, daddy.

Victor: Okay, sweetheart. Nice to see you.

Abby: You too.

Victor: Okay.

Chance: What’s this about?

Victor: I wanted to thank you for what you have done for our family. Wanted to thank you man to man.

Chance: Well, I don’t want or need your thanks.

Kevin: I don’t know what you think we were saying, but —

Adam: Well, from what i heard, someone made a bad judgment call without considering how it would affect you, kevin.

Kevin: Me? I’m fine.

Adam: Hmm. For now. But chance is a newman by marriage now, victor’s newly anointed family hero. And thank god for that. I mean, how convenient to have a son-in-law on the force. But, kevin, make no mistake. I’ve seen this movie before. Victor is going to use everything in his arsenal to make sure that boy scout stays squeaky clean and right where he needs him so he can make sure all their mistakes can simply disappear. And chance is gonna have no problem leaving you out to dry.

Kevin: That’s not true. Chance wouldn’t do that. We work together. He’s a good guy.

Adam: Mnh, I wouldn’t be so sure about that, okay? This isn’t something that you can sleep on, kevin. If you are smart, you will get out in front of this right now.

Victor: Hey, son. What are you doing here? I thought you were staying in town.

Adam: Oh, I’m just picking up some of my things. I’d be happy to clear out all my stuff if you would prefer a different tenant. Victoria perhaps? I know you would prefer her company these days. And maybe you could, uh, persuade her and the kids to camp out here permanently, take over the place that you offered me. You know, I think that would only be fitting, dad, considering I’m just used as a placeholder for my sister until her inevitable triumphant return knocks me back into the reject pile.

Victor: For your information, katie and johnny are upstairs asleep, and victoria claims she wants to move back to her home.

[ Keys jangle ]

Nick: Hey!

Nick: What is going on?

Ashland: Don’t get involved, nick. Your sister and I are saying our final goodbyes.

Victoria: [ Breathes deeply ]

Adam: Victoria is following her usual patterns. She sucks up your hospitality, then she hurries home. Is there a reason you think she shouldn’t this time?

Victor: You obviously know the trauma she has been through, right? That drama with ashland locke has left wounds, traumatic for both her and the children. They don’t even know what their stepfather was capable of.

Adam: Yeah, just like, uh, many people don’t know how ashland locke actually died.

Victor: Why are you bringing that up now?

Adam: I just can’t get over the feeling that you had something to do with it.

Victor: [ Chuckles ] You trying to goad me into something or what?

Adam: No. Look, I’m not looking for a fight, okay? Just the opposite. I don’t want to be accused of slinking on and off the property without saying hello. And now I have, so I’ll be on my way.

Victor: Hey, son. Why don’t we sit down and have a drink together, huh?

Sharon: Wow. The whole family must be so relieved. I mean, now you can finally put this nightmare behind you, especially you and victoria.

Nick: [ Sighs ] And dad, too. Not that he would admit it. Thanks to chance, he is in the clear. But he almost made the situation much, much worse.

Sharon: Well, victor’s methods might not always be the best, but you know he was only trying to help.

Nick: That’s always his motivation, but it’s not always the result.

Sharon: Sounds like you’re still angry with him.

Nick: Part of me is livid with him because of his constant need to control every single situation. Meanwhile, I’m the one who’s up at night worried sick if anything’s gonna happen to him if chance makes his case.

Sharon: Well, have you and your dad gotten to talk about this and how his actions have affected everyone?

Nick: If anything, he blames me for making him tell me what he had done. I should have just left it alone. You know, it’s never his fault.

Sharon: Mm, I wouldn’t let him off the hook now.

Nick: You’re right. I just — I need to let go of some of this aggravation and take a deep breath because it seems like this is gonna be behind us.

Sharon: You have been under a tremendous pressure. I’m glad you’re feeling some relief, but I’m afraid there is another aspect to this you won’t be able to avoid — your own conflict with having killed a man, even someone as horrible as ashland.

Abby: Good night. I know that something has been eating away at you. Was it the conversation that you had with victoria earlier? Did she upset you? And was she pressuring you about the investigation?

Chance: No, no, not at all. She, uh — she was actually surprisingly candid, said she didn’t want to influence my decision in any way.

Abby: Well, that’s a relief.

Chance: Yeah.

Abby: I know that you’ve been churning on the inside.

Chance: After she left, kevin showed up with some new information.

Abby: Evidence?

Chance: Mm-hmm. I can’t go into detail, but it was clear to me I had to make a call on what to do next.

Abby: And?

Chance: Well, I just came from the ranch. Saw your family. Investigation’s over. Wrote my final report. Ashland locke died of head trauma most likely suffered during a car accident. File it tomorrow, and then i will move on.

Abby: [ Exhales heavily ] Okay. Um… that’s amazing. I mean, that means my dad was innocent. There was no cover-up.

[ Chuckling ] Oh, my god.

Chance: No, abby. There was evidence of exactly that. (Assad) since my mother

Abby: I don’t know what to say. I was hoping that, for once, my father hadn’t gone rogue.

Chance: Well, here’s the deal. Even though I did have evidence that backed up victor was behind the cover-up, it wasn’t conclusive. There were gaps. I was missing pieces. I mean, there was just enough for a prosecutor to think twice before taking it to trial.

Abby: So, that was your reasoning. You couldn’t prove your theory.

Chance: If I would have kept digging and pursuing the evidence I have, I believe i could have got there. Yes, what we had so far, a criminal case could have gone either way. But, hey, at the end of the day, no matter what happened, ashland’s death was an accident. So I made a judgment call. I opted to embrace the car crash as the most plausible cause of death.

Abby: Well, I know this case has been weighing on you heavily. So, why aren’t you more relieved that it’s over?

Sharon: Right after ashland died, you came to me and you wanted to talk. You explained how you were upset over having taken a life, any life, even though you knew you had acted in self-defense. And then you got caught up in what victor did, and then you were concerned about what the police were gonna discover. And I’m thinking that you used that as a way of avoiding confronting your own feelings.

Nick: I mean, in some ways, all that chaos kind of pulled me out of my own head. You know, it was a distraction. Not exactly a welcome one, but it gave me a place to focus on something besides my own guilt.

Sharon: And are you ready to face those feelings now? I don’t mean right this second. There’s no time limit. I’m just saying I want you to know that I’m here when you’re ready. Maybe you can explore what’s going on inside without the constant sense of dread of everything that’s been hanging over you lately. And I’m happy to listen. And if you want, I’ll help guide you through this.

Adam: Connor’s taken a little detour from sports lately.

Victor: Oh, yeah? Into what?

Adam: Coding. He’s, uh, fascinated by it.

Victor: Coding? What the hell is coding? Whoa. Huh. I’ll be damned. You know, we miss that boy. Both nikki and I do. Whenever he’s here, he brings a smile to our faces. I’m sure that kid will be very, very successful.

Adam: Unlike his dad. Serial failure.

Victor: I didn’t say anything like that.

Adam: No, but it was implied.

[ Clears throat ] You rarely say what you actually mean.

Victor: What do you mean, what’s implied? That’s pure nonsense you’re talking about. You trying to goad me into something or what? You trying to piss me off? Not gonna work tonight. I’m feeling good.

Victoria: Ashland?

Nick: Can you find a pulse? Vick.

[ Knock on door ]

Victoria: [ Gasps ]

Billy: Vick, it’s me. You in there?

Victoria: [ Exhales heavily ] The door’s open.

[ Door opens ]

Billy: Hi.

Victoria: Hi.

Billy: I know it’s a little bit late, and I don’t want to intrude, but I was driving by. I saw your car in the driveway and your lights on. I thought you said earlier that you were gonna stay at the ranch.

Victoria: Oh, yeah, well, at that point, I hadn’t planned on — on returning tonight, but when I got to the ranch, i just — I felt like I wanted to come back home.

Billy: Is this your first night back since —

Victoria: Since ashland died? Yes. Yes, it is. You know, it’s funny. Walking in here, it struck me how — how nothing has really changed [Breathes deeply] And yet everything has.

[ Sighs heavily ] I have moderate to severe plaque psoriasis.

Victoria: [ Sighs ]

Billy: You feel better?

Victoria: Much. Thank you.

Billy: So, why did you decide to come back?

Victoria: I don’t want to uproot myself or the kids.

Billy: I understand that, but why tonight? Because, you know, you don’t have to rush any of this. You could have waited until the investigation was resolved.

Victor: It was resolved. It’s over and done with. Case closed.

Billy: What do you — what do you mean? You didn’t mention that earlier.

Victoria: I didn’t know about it then.

Billy: Come on. You want to share some of this with me, or did you swear secrecy?

Victoria: Okay. I…

[ Sighs ] After I left the bar and returned to the ranch, chance was there and informed us as a group that his official findings were that, after the fight, ashland left the house, got into his car, drove off, and died in a crash.

Billy: “Official finding.” Meaning?

Victoria: I-I — chance is gonna submit his final report to the department. That’s just the language that they use, billy.

Billy: Yeah, well, it sounds like a euphemism to me.

Victoria: I have no idea what you’re talking about.

Billy: Look, I got to ask you. Be straight with me. There’s more to ashland locke’s death than the rest of us know, isn’t there?

Chance: I am relieved that i made my decision on this case. Trust me. But it was not easy. I mean, I think your dad orchestrated a cover-up. I believe that. And my evidence wasn’t conclusive. So I just had to ask myself, what am I gonna accomplish from doing all this? I’m just gonna continue to expend department resources when there is so much more out there crying for my attention right now.

Abby: Like closing all of rey’s cases. I know that’s important to you.

Chance: For starters, yes. And then there’s the human element to consider.

Abby: My family. Yeah.

Chance: I mean, after everything that ashland did to victoria and your whole family, is it right for me to just drag them through some more hell? I know for a fact there wasn’t any malice or premeditation leading up to his death. And whatever happened, the injury that killed him was an accident. But I believe that ashland died as a result of that altercation.

Abby: So you’ve said.

Chance: And victor reacted in the moment. It was ill-advised, and it complicated the hell out of things, but it happened. It can’t be undone. The people who know about it are gonna have to live with it. Nick’s gonna have to come to terms with killing ashland, and victoria’s gonna need time to heal. Although I bet your dad is celebrating. That’s for sure.

Abby: Look, my father will always do what he believes is right to protect his family. And I will never be able to thank you enough for choosing to protect him.

Chance: Look —

Abby: To protect our family.

Chance: Look, I made a choice, alright? And I would — I would really appreciate it if you would stop acting like it was the right one just because I came down on the newmans’ side of things.

Adam: Well, you seem very pleased with yourself. Why is that? What major win have you scored now?

Victor: My family is happy, and when they’re happy, I feel good.

Adam: Mm. I see.

Victor: Yeah.

Adam: You’re gonna make me pull it out of you bit by bit. Okay.

[ Glass thuds ] Well, the latest threat to the newmans was ashland locke.

Victor: Well, that S.O.B. Is thankfully no longer with us.

Adam: Mm, that eliminated some of the danger, but his death had its own turmoil. So, what changed?

Victor: All conversations about ashland locke are past tense, okay? Guy’s dead as a doornail. And any investigations into the circumstances of his death are now closed.

Adam: What?

Victor: Yeah. They’re closed. Chance was here earlier. He said he was no longer going to investigate the circumstances of ashland locke’s death, so victoria can now pick up the pieces of her life. So can we all.

Adam: That’s your win.

[ Laughs ] There really was something to investigate after all, wasn’t there? And naturally, you shut it down. What the hell did you pull this time, dad? (Vo) red lobster’s seafood summerfest is fire!

Victor: Okay, I’m — I’m gonna entrust you with the real facts, with the expectation that you keep it private.

Billy: I promise you, whatever you tell me, it’ll stay between us.

Victoria: Although nicholas and I didn’t know it at the time…ashland did die here.

[ Sighs ] We went outside to get our bearings, and my father sent his security team in here to remove the body and stage an accident.

Billy: In order to protect nick from being blamed.

Victoria: Dad didn’t know it at the time. He didn’t — he — he didn’t know about the fight. All he knew is that ashland was lying on my floor, dead. He wasn’t even sure who he was protecting.

Billy: Just covering his bases, huh?

Victoria: Nicholas was furious, and he felt like dad had made things so much worse. And then of course chance suspected dad of covering things up, and he started looking for evidence and pursuing new leads. He was completely relentless. And then tonight, he told us that he concluded that there wasn’t enough evidence to, um — to prove that a crime had been committed, and he closed the case.

Billy: Just like that?

Victoria: Just like that.

Billy: Well, I’m glad he let it go.

Victoria: Although I got the impression that it wasn’t easy for him.

Billy: I’m sure it wasn’T. Just like I’m sure this isn’t easy for you. I mean, obviously, this is upsetting being back here, realizing that your ex didn’t actually die in a car crash, that it —

Victoria: Happened here. You know, part of me is glad that I was in the kitchen and I didn’t see nick punch him, I didn’t see him fall. That memory is the last thing that I need etched into my brain.

Billy: Oh, for your sake, I’m glad that’s true, too.

Victoria: I’m just so worried about nicholas.

[ Sighs ] He has to live with the knowledge that he — he took a man’s life. Even though his actions were justified, he never meant to hurt anyone. I’m so worried about what that will do to him.

Nick: I have no problem being open about my feelings toward ashland. I absolutely hated him. I don’t care who knew. I didn’t try and hide it. There were days when I wished he was dead. But then to actually see him dead on the floor, knowing that I caused it… I don’t know what to do with that. Some nights I wake up in a cold sweat, reliving that whole night.

[ Sighs ] I don’t know. I just — I wonder… how things would have played out if it happened differently.

Sharon: Hey. It was never your intention to take his life. Even if you had thought about it in the past, on any level, you need to separate your feelings for ashland from the events of that night. You were defending your sister. And, you know, you were protecting yourself, as well. And chance — I mean, we both know that he’s as righteous and honorable as they come. And he’s weighed all the evidence, and he’s declared that it was an accident. The fact that he has let this go just proves he believes that you are innocent. You’re not at fault.

Abby: I’m really sorry if i said the wrong thing. I didn’t mean to make you more upset.

Chance: One of the main reasons I was drawn to the military and then law enforcement — there are rules. There is the right, and there is the wrong, legal and illegal. You break the rules, you get punished.

Abby: I owe you an apology. I have been telling you that this was your decision to make and meanwhile I was forcing this “family first” idea onto you and that was not fair. But, really, I — I just want to be here for you, for whatever you’re feeling, even if that’s how disillusioned you are with my father, with my family… with me.

Chance: Honey, I’M…

[ Sighs ] I’m sorry. I really appreciated all your support. And I know I put you in a bad spot being on this case. I believe I came to the right determination, given the facts. I honestly do. And I just hope that nick and victoria can begin to move on.

Victor: So, why do you think I pulled anything?

Adam: Come on. Are — are we really gonna do this, dad? Fine.

[ Glass slams ] I’ve heard certain things. I’ve talked to a lot of people…

Victor: Mm.

Adam: …Including chance.

Victor: Mm.

Adam: News reports said it was a car crash, but it wasn’t that simple, was it, dad?

Victor: I don’t know.

Adam: The accident happened in a ravine nowhere near ashland’s place, but it wasn’t that far from victoria’S. Now, if it was just a routine car crash, why were the authorities looking into it?

Victor: Yeah. Why, indeed? Beats me.

Adam: Chance seemed pretty disturbed by what happened. And when I was leaving town, he told me that I should stay because my family might need me.

Victor: Well, how kind of him.

Adam: Mm-hmm.

Victor: Where were you intending to go?

Adam: Oh, that doesn’t matter. But after that, I saw nick and sharon, and it looked pretty intense, like she was talking him off the ledge. Now, god knows nick and ashland didn’t care for each other. So, why would nick be so upset?

Victor: [ Chuckles ] No clue.

Adam: Mm-hmm.

Victor: Now, for someone who claims he wants to leave the family, you’re awfully interested in our business.

Adam: Yeah. Yeah, and later on, I talked to abby, who seemed to think that chance was keeping things from her, too. Now, why all the secrecy for just a routine crash? I mean… and I also thought sally knew more than she was saying, but she was asked not to publish anything negative, which, dad, i have to tell you, quite frankly, that was crossing a line.

Victor: Now stop beating around the bush. Ask your question.

Adam: Did you cover for nick or victoria? How did locke really die? And how did you convince chance to just look the other way? Time. It’s life’s most precious commodity,

Victor: Son, you can attack me all day long, alright? But leave chance alone. He’s an honest man.

Adam: Fine. So, what happened?

Victor: Ashland locke threatened to become violent with victoria. Nicholas intervened, protected her. I then protected both of them. Chance decided to no longer continue the investigation into ashland locke’s death. He laid it to rest. That’s what family does, son, in moments of crisis. You, however, decided to leave us all, leave newman media, and put in charge your former girlfriend, who none of us trust.

[ Glass thuds ]

Adam: You claim to believe in family loyalty, except when it is inconvenient or it goes against your master plan, dad. I have been loyal as hell. You just don’t see it.

Billy: Nick is a strong, steady guy. He’s got a support system. I believe that he’s gonna be strong enough to overcome what’s happened to you.

Victoria: I don’t disagree with you. But I just want to be there for him. I want to be his sounding board while he’s going through this.

Billy: I understand that. I mean, looking at it, it’s kind of a minor miracle. You guys were pretty far apart in tuscany. You came back together strong, supporting each other.

Victoria: Well, it’s always been about ashland. He was right about him the whole time.

Billy: Yeah, let’s forget about that, okay? Let’s start to put ashland in the past, make him history.

Victoria: Alright. You know, when chance told me that he’d be closing the case, i just felt this giant weight lifting. That’s why I wanted to come home, you know? I just — I didn’t want to waste one minute getting back to life. But then when I got here, it just — all these memories came flooding back, and I’m really grateful you showed up when you did.

Billy: Wow. My timing didn’t suck for once.

Victoria: No. Actually, it was perfect.

Billy: [ Chuckles ] You know, when I first got here, you mentioned that this house looks the same, that our home now looks the same as it did the day we moved in. Sorry. Your home.

Victoria: Don’t apologize. It was our house.

Billy: Exact replica of the “father knows best,” what you always wanted.

Victoria: Look at how that metaphor turned out.

Billy: Mm-hmm. My father immediately had me arrested after we said our wedding vows on the front lawn, and he hasn’t stopped guiding me ever since.

[ Laughs ]

Billy: It’s nice to see you laugh.

Victoria: Well, you remember how I told you at the bar earlier that your dark sense of humor still cracks me up for some reason.

Billy: Oh. Yeah, well, what else am i good for? Look, I don’t want to, uh, make this all light because the truth is you did build something with ashland, and now all of that is gone. I’m not gonna shed a tear for that man. But I also just want to make sure that you’re alright and that you are ready to move on because I don’t want you causing any more pain for yourself. There’s already enough of that out in the world.

Victoria: I appreciate that. But I refuse to let ashland take my home from me.

Billy: Good. Now, how about we get rid of all that bad juju and talk about some good times?

Victoria: Alright. Where do you want to start?

Billy: Well, naturally, we start with the kids, right? So, um, I’m gonna say, uh, water balloon fights with them. That’s a blast.

Victoria: Snowball fights in the winter.

Billy: Yes.

Victoria: Yes.

Billy: Yes. The smell of hot chocolate and burnt cookies.

Victoria: [ Chuckles ] Well, I guess I can’t be good at everything.

Billy: [ Chuckling ] That’s true. But you do make a mean take-out order.

Victoria: Thank you. Painting together. Decorating for christmas.

Billy: Mm-hmm. Don’t forget my mean carpentry skills, where I built you the bookshelf, the exact replica of what you had when you were a child.

Victoria: I guess you’re not good at everything, either.

Billy: Hey, now. Come on. That wasn’t half bad.

Victoria: Those percentages sound about right, don’t they?

Billy: Geez.

Victoria: [ Laughs ]

Billy: What about bringing johnny home?

Victoria: Celebrating katie’s christening.

Billy: Yeah. I guess it’s only fair that, uh, we keep it real, right, and we talk about some of the tough times we went through.

Victoria: [ Sighs ]

Billy: One thing that comes to mind is how difficult it was for you when you were trying to have another baby.

Victoria: Delia’s death. I hope it doesn’t sound terrible for me to say it, but thinking about these memories that are a little bit darker, they — they bring me comfort, too.

Billy: Why is that?

Victoria: Well, because we made it through. We survived it. And here we are. We’re sitting together, talking, after all these years. We’re almost friends, even.

[ Both laugh ] I think that if I can get through those difficult times, still feel like this is my home, I could probably get through just about anything, including ashland.

Billy: I have no doubt.

Victoria: You know, when i first came back in here and i saw where it happened, where he died… but now, is it insane that you’ve made me feel like i should be toasting the future?

Billy: It’s not insane at all. At marshalls, our buyers spend every day hustling

Victoria: What should we drink to?

Billy: That’s a dangerous question.

Victoria: I’m not going to drink to ashland’s death.

Billy: No, no, no. That is far too morbid.

Victoria: Among other things, yes.

Billy: How about to catharsis?

Victoria: Perfect.

[ Glasses clink ]

Billy: You know, I have to say…you really are at the place that you always dreamed about being at. And I know it’s been difficult to get here, but you’re running the newman family business. It’s bigger and stronger than it’s ever been. And most importantly, you are the best mother to the most amazing kids that this planet has ever seen.

Victoria: I do have a lot to be grateful for.

Billy: Yeah. And now we are moving on from what’s-his-name and all his horror, everything that he put you through, there is nothing — and I mean this — nothing that you can’t conquer.

Victoria: Thank you.

Billy: I mean it, vick. You’re so impressive. You’re an amazing woman. And I’m — I’m just so proud of you.

Victoria: [ Chuckles ]

Billy: And to be honest, I’m a tiny bit jealous.

[ Chuckles ]

Victoria: You mentioned earlier at the club that, uh — that you felt a bit at sea lately.

Billy: Yeah.

Victoria: What is that about?

Billy: Just thinking about making some changes.

Victoria: Care to share?

Billy: Nope, not tonight. Because tonight is all about you and your fresh start. To new beginnings.

[ Glasses clink ]

Victoria: Hear, hear.

Adam: I’m not gonna sit here and — and let you shame me for not being a loyal newman. I’ve done nothing but work to defend my sister and protect this family. I’m the one who brokered the deal to get ashland out of our lives, and it was you and victoria who undermined that. If she hadn’t gone to such extremes by taking his money and humiliating him, if you hadn’t taken steps to prevent him to see harrison… you backed the guy into a corner. You pushed him to lash out. And, I mean, I’m the one who went and I warned victoria and nick that he was out for revenge. So, whatever happened that night, however nick defended our sister — none of that would have happened, dad, if you trusted my original plan. Ashland locke would have disappeared on his own accord. He would have taken the money, and he would have been out of our lives. And you know what? Maybe he still would be alive.

Victor: And how in the hell would that have been a better outcome?

Adam: [ Scoffs ] I’m — I’m happy for you. I’m glad that you’re out from under that monster’s influence.

Victor: Mm.

Adam: But do remember — and, dad, you should know this better than anybody — there’s always another shoe out there that’s waiting to drop.

Diane: Why do you suppose harrison sleeps like that?

Jack: All splayed out like he’s in the middle of a jumping jack? I don’t know, maybe to keep cool in the august heat?

Diane: That could be it. Whatever the reason, it’s adorable. It’s like he jumped into bed in that position and then just fell immediately asleep.

[ Sighing ] Ah. Thank you for letting me peek in on him.

Jack: Anytime.

Diane: You know, this grandparenting thing is never going to get old, is it?

Jack: I highly doubt it. All this joy he brings us seems pretty limitless.

Diane: Yeah. Well, I — I should get going. Thank you for dinner.

Jack: What, you thanking me? You paid.

Diane: Well, I have a paycheck now, and, um, I couldn’t think of a nicer way to spend a bit of it.

Jack: Well, thank you. I was about to make myself a drink. Would you maybe like one?

Diane: A nightcap?

[ Chuckles ] That sounds like a lovely end to a lovely evening.

[ Liquid pouring ]

Billy: You actually think that victoria and I brought out the best in each other? You’re actually serious about that?

Chelsea: Absolutely. You brought out the best, and occasionally the worst.

Billy: Hmm. See, that’s more like it. No, I, uh — I don’t think that I brought out the best in victoria, but there’s no doubt that she often saved me from the worst of myself.

Chelsea: So you are lucky to have found her.

Billy: Oh, yeah, there’s no doubt about that. And I knew that. I know that. Everyone knows that.

Chelsea: [ Chuckles ] I think people from the outside looking in thought they knew what was going on in your relationship. I mean, even I knew about some of the roller-coaster ups and downs, but no one really knows what happened except the two of you, right?

Billy: Yeah, I would say that.

Chelsea: So, tell me, what really went wrong between you and victoria?

Victoria: Hello.

[ Sighs ] Well, chance is definitely conflicted. I can tell he’s being pulled in a couple of different directions.

Victor: Hope you made a very strong argument for him to drop this ridiculous investigation.

Victoria: I didn’t argue with him at all. I just told him that I respected that he has to do what he feels he has to do. But I made it very clear that my children and my family are a lot safer because of what happened that night.

Nikki: And how did he respond to that?

Victoria: He didn’t really reveal anything, but he looks like he’s carrying around a very heavy burden.

Victor: [ Sighs ] Whatever happens, we’ll deal with it, right?

Chance: [ Sighs ]

Nick: It all happened so fast. You know, all I wanted to do was protect my sister. But I’m telling you, ashland was completely out of control.

Victoria: You know, you’re accusing our father with no proof at all. As nicholas just said, this is all speculation.

Victor: So, let’s assume your cockamamie hypothesis is correct. Let’s assume that I sent my security team into the house, to pick up ashland locke’s body, put it into his car, and have them stage an accident in the ravine, give you the impression that ashland locke died by himself. And let’s assume that I did that to protect my son and my daughter from the impression that they weren’t innocent in this.

Nick: So, what would it take for you to be satisfied that ashland was able to leave victoria’s house without any help?

Chance: You know, honestly, nothing would make me feel better than to just close the book on this thing and move on.

Victoria: Well, if you really feel that way, then why don’t you put a stop to this investigation right now?

Chance: [ Sighs ] Kevin. Hey. Yeah, I know it’s late, man. I’m sorry. But the ashland locke case — I’ve made up my mind. That’s right, I finally know what I have to do.

Victor: I have no regrets of my actions that night. Okay? You all know that I did everything to protect my family.

Victoria: I thought you’d be more concerned.

Victor: Really? Chance doesn’t have enough evidence. If he had, he would have gone to the D.A. By now. So a few more dead ends, and he will give up.

Victoria: I’d feel more confident if that were the only issue I were dealing with right now.

Victor: What’s the matter? Anything wrong with the business?

Victoria: No, no, not at all. The business side of things seems to be humming along.

[ Sighs ] It’s something else.

Nikki: What is it, darling?

Victoria: I was ambushed tonight by chelsea.

Nikki: What reason would she have to come after you?

Victoria: She’s not really out to get me? She just suddenly seems very interested in telling johnny who his biological mother is.

Nikki: What?

Victoria: She says she wants connor to know that he has a brother — at least, biologically.

Victor: This is coming out of the blue.

Victoria: Uh, yes. I mean, it felt like it was. But who knows? Maybe this is something that chelsea has been considering for some time.

Nikki: What are you going to do about it?

Victoria: I have no idea. Johnny is aware that I’m not his biological mother, but it’s another thing altogether to tell him who gave birth to him.

Nikki: This was never part of the arrangement you made with her.

Victoria: Exactly. The decision to give johnny this information was left to our discretion completely.

Nikki: [ Sighs ] On the other hand, she’s not the same woman she was when you made that arrangement. She’s not a con artist anymore. She’s a mother herself now.

Victoria: That’s all true.

Nikki: And I do think keeping information like that from a child can cause problems later on.

Victoria: So, you’re saying you think I should break the news to johnny now?

No. You’re his mother. He’s your son. You’re the only mother he’s ever known.

Billy: What is going on here? Is this a therapy session I didn’t know I was having.

Chelsea: [ Chuckles ] I’m sorry if I’m overstepping. I don’t know what our boundaries are yet. I figure, since we’re working together, everything’s fair game.

Billy: Is that so?

Chelsea: Mm-hmm. It would be great fodder for an episode.

Billy: Okay. Look, uh, I’m not upset that you’re asking me about victoria. I’m really not. I was just a little bit surprised. But I think you’re right. The more open and honest we are, the more authentic the podcast is.

Chelsea: Exactly. Like we said, the audience will know if we’re being fake. So back to my original question. What happened between you and victoria?

Billy: [ Sighs ] There’s really not one answer to explain why we didn’t work out, except for maybe the fact that I’ve never been able to hold on to a winning streak. Truth is, it was never her fault. You know? I mean, she did everything she could to keep me on the path. And, uh, I don’t know, for whatever reason, I would always find a way to slip up. But it was never her fault. And that’s not me being self-effacing or trying to protect her in any way. It’s just the truth. She was never the cause of me being at my worst.

Chelsea: Oh, that’s not what I meant when I said that. I just meant, you know, you guys brought up the extremes in each other.

Billy: Yeah.

Chelsea: But I don’t think you’re like that anymore. You know, you’re a lot more in control, a lot more mature. You’ve — you’ve calmed that wild side.

Billy: You’ve got a talent for coming up with new ways to call me boring.

Chelsea: Tat’s not my intention. It’s not. What, is that how you see yourself? Does part of you miss the billy you used to be?

Nick: It’s a little late for coffee, huh?

Chance: Oh, I’m not sleeping much these days as it is.

Nick: Sorry to hear that.

Chance: May be able to relax soon. There’s been some developments in the case.

Nick: That’s good for you, I guess.

Chance: Yeah. I’d like to sit down with you and victoria and your dad in the morning. We can talk about how things are gonna proceed from here.

Nick: Well, chance, I don’t see any reason why we need to prolong. Vick’s out at the ranch with dad right now. Let’s go out there and handle this tonight.

Chance: You’d be up for that?

Nick: The sooner, the better, as far as I’m concerned.

Chance: Okay. Let’s go to the ranch. A pool floatie is like whooping cough,

Diane: Come to think of it, kyle used to sleep like that. Remember? Thank you.

Jack: No, I don’T.

Diane: Guess I noticed it when he would have a bad dream and then come into my room in the middle of the night. He would crawl into bed with me and then spread out, just like harrison, and this — this little three-year-old taking up the whole bed. I would just go sleep on the sofa.

Jack: No, I-I don’t recall that.

Diane: Oh, I think that was when I left genoa city with him. I look back on that time with such regret. No wonder he was having bad dreams. I was keeping him from you. It wasn’t fair, jack. And I’m — I’m sorry.

Jack: Water under the bridge.

Diane: And now it seems like history is kind of repeating itself.

Jack: Wait. How so?

Diane: Well, kyle missed out on the first few years of harrison’s life.

Jack: That was a very different situation. I — I didn’t mean that to sound like I was taking a shot at you, but we both have spent enough time and energy on past resentments.

Diane: Yes. The last time we talked about the wounds from our past, you were a bit more antagonistic with me. Rightfully so. But, um, I kind of appreciate the kinder, gentler approach you’re taking with me tonight.

Jack: I still don’t think we should sweep everything from the past under the rug.

Diane: No, and I — I don’t want to gloss over what happened. There are so many people in this town who won’t let me forget any of it. But you seem to have found a way to rise above that pettiness.

Jack: You’ve made a lot of claims about doing the same thing. Do you really think you can let go of past resentments?

Diane: Uh, well, for years, I — I held on to grudges. They fueled me. Jack, I can’t believe how much my life has changed in a year. I mean, I still have regrets. And kyle’s pain tops the list. But here I am, having a life that I could have only dreamed of. I’m rebuilding my relationship with my son, I’m getting to know my grandson. And I have an exciting, new job that allows me to buy you dinner once in a while.

Jack: [ Chuckles ]

Diane: It’s unreal. Almost as unreal as the two of us sitting here together.

Jack: It’s all pretty amazing.

Diane: Yeah.

Jack: But what do you really want?

Billy: You’re killing me with these questions. You know that?

Chelsea: I’m just trying to get you to open up, give us some material for the podcast.

Billy: Right. Okay. Well, to answer your question, no, I don’t think I’m boring.

Chelsea: [ Sighs ] But do you miss who you used to be?

Billy: I’m uh — I mean, I think everybody looks back on their past at a certain age and feels a little nostalgia for their youth. I will also say that that troublemaking side of me is embedded pretty deep in there. At least, that’s what my family believes anyway.

Chelsea: Who thinks that?

Billy: Oh, everybody thinks that. I mean, my mom, my brother, they don’t believe that I’ll ever be able to grow up. I will always self-sabotage myself. And when my mom said that just a few weeks ago, we were talking about the podcast. She believes that’s a gateway to the old destructive behavior.

Chelsea: Oh, she’s just being overprotective. Just pushing your buttons as only a mom can.

Billy: Yeah, maybe so.

Chelsea: Your mom’s not here. She doesn’t get to see you on a daily basis, so she doesn’t recognize how much you’ve changed. Now, lily — lily is the person whose opinion matters most.

Billy: Yeah, I don’t think — lily’s opinion of me isn’t much better. We had a little, uh, discussion, and it sounds like she wants me to quit the podcasts.

Victor: If you want my opinion, I think it would be a mistake to tell johnny about chelsea. It would only confuse the boy.

Nikki: Darling, you, of all people, should understand the importance of knowing where you came from, who your parents are.

Victor: Sweetheart, there’s a time for that. This is not it.

Victoria: Also, johnny is dealing with the loss of ashland. I don’t think it would be smart to pile all this on top of him right now. I know ashland wasn’t his stepfather for very long, but the children still feel the loss.

Nikki: I agree with you about the timing, but I do think it would be best to tell him at some point.

Nick: You’re all still here. Good.

Victoria: Is everything okay?

Nikki: What’s going on?

Victor: Why are you so late?

Nick: Chance is gonna be here any minute.

[ Telephone rings ]

Victor: Yes? Send him in.

Nikki: [ Sighs ]

Nick: Apparently, chance has uncovered some new information and he’s ready to move forward.

Victoria: What does that mean?

Nick: I don’t know, but i didn’t like the sound of it, so I convinced him to come out here and talk to us.

Victor: This going to be a courtesy call, or is he bringing handcuffs?

Nick: I don’t know, dad.

Victor: What was his demeanor?

Nick: Somber. He seemed weighted down, but he didn’t hesitate when I invited him to come out here and speak to us. Maybe that’s a good sign.

[ Footsteps approaching ]

Chance: Hello, everyone.

Victor: Hello, chance.

Chance: Thank you for meeting with me. I think this will be helpful.

Victor: Oh, yeah? Helpful to you or to us?

Chance: For the process, victor. Now, I really just need to speak with the people directly involved.

Nikki: Oh. Does that mean I’m supposed to leave the room?

Victor: No, you’re not supposed to leave the room. You can say whatever you want to say in front of nikki, okay?

Chance: Okay. That’s fine.

Victoria: It’s late. Can we begin this conversation?

Chance: Sure. But nick may have misled you about why I’m here. This is not a conversation. I just need all of you to please listen to what I have to say.

Zyrteeeec…

Chance: Here’s what I have so far. A witness spotted ashland’s vehicle at a gas station near victoria’s property. There was security footage of someone driving that vehicle away from that gas station right after you called me that night. Now, the image is not clear, but we have determined that it is not ashland.

Nikki: So, he had an accomplice or he hired a driver.

Chance: Let me finish, please. Thank you. Now, while it does not look like ashland, he does bear a resemblance to one of victor’s security guards — one of the men assigned to victoria’s house that night.

Victor: He could resemble a million people.

Chance: He might. But he smokes. A cigarette butt was found where ashland’s car was parked at the gas station — his brand. Now, the security footage from the gas station has gaps, including where ashland would have got there and when he would have left. We also have ashland’s ring, which was found on the floor at victoria’s house, and it is very unlikely that that ring fell out of his pocket when he was walking out of the house, but more probable that it fell out of his pocket when he was being carried or dragged out of the house.

Victor: It’s all suppositions — cigarette butt, apiece of jewelry. Come on.

Chance: There’s more. The latest piece of evidence is a bloody fingerprint found on the door handle of the car. And the blood is ashland’S. The print is not. So, no, this is no longer a supposition. And once I compare that print to your security guards, I’m pretty sure I’ll have a match.

Victor: It won’t stand up in court.

Chance: Indictments have been made with less.

Victor: I tell you, you’ve got nothing. Right?

Chelsea: I can’t believe lily wants you to walk away from the podcast.

Billy: Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. She didn’t outright say that. I’m just saying, it seems like she would be happy if I either walked away from being the coo or the podcast, but she doesn’t think I should be able to do both.

Chelsea: That’s not true.

Billy: Well, she feels like I’m spending too much time focusing on the podcast, and i know what other people aren’t saying — that I’m using it as a way to avoid my responsibility at chancellor-winters.

Chelsea: Well, I disagree. The podcasts are a perfect fit for you. No offense, but I said it before. You’re not a corporate guy.

Billy: None taken.

Chelsea: You’re a sensible risk-taker like me. You know, you take chances on love and life and the world.

Billy: I hear you. But I will say, lily’s got a pretty sharp insight, and I trust her. She has not steered me wrong yet, so maybe she’s right. Maybe I should leave my position as coo.

Chelsea: Well, that’s the most sensible thing you’ve said all day. It’s like you always go back to the c-suite because you think it’s what you’re supposed to do, but you always end up leaving for your real passion. Podcast billy is the real billy. The grinning soul is the real billy.

Billy: No, that’s — that’s not me.

Chelsea: Stop denying it. I figured it out a long time ago. I know you better than you realize.

Diane: What do I want? What does anyone want? Um, health and happiness… peace. Beyond that, to be a productive member of society and — and to be a welcome part of my son and my grandson’s lives.

Jack: Wow. This is a letter-perfect answer. Sounds like you’re competing in a pageant.

Diane: [ Laughs ] Well, do you have a tiara and a sash for me? Is that why you’re asking me these questions?

Jack: I don’t know. I was maybe hoping for some honesty that maybe you could dig deep and tell me what’s really going on, since obviously we’re in a different place than we were a few months ago, even a few weeks ago.

Diane: We are. There’s no longer a wall of animosity between us.

Jack: And that’s a good thing, right?

Diane: Yes, it is.

Jack: [ Chuckles ]

Diane: Where exactly are you going with these questions, jack?

I want to know what you’re thinking. Where do you think this is going?

Victor: Well, I think we’ll sort this all out.

Nick: [ Sighs ]

I can’t go on like this. Alright, we are living —

Chance: Nick, I advise you to say nothing more without a lawyer present.

Victor: Chance, let me ask you something. What are you doing here? You’re a member of this family. You’re my son-in-law. You understand the complexity of this case as it pertains to all of us. So…have you forgotten that you’re a member of this family?

Chance: Like I said, this is not a conversation. So I would appreciate it if all of you would just listen. Ughh!

[Sfx: Buzzing ] This is pretection

Chance: So, there are two scenarios here. Both involve a belligerent and unstable ashland locke showing up at victoria’S. He’s invited in. He makes threats. Nick arrives, coming to his sister’s aid. In self-defense, nick punches locke, and he falls and hits his head. Now, scenario number one. He’s injured, but he’s still alive. These two step outside for a brief moment. During that time, ashland gets up, he stumbles to his car, and he drives off. And at some point, he loses control of the vehicle and he ends up in that ravine, killing himself in the crash.

Victor: Mm-hmm. Go on.

Chance: Now, scenario number two. Nick’s altercation with locke, in defense of victoria, inadvertently caused the fall that killed locke. Now, nick did not intend for him to die, but it happened. And after victoria did the responsible thing and contacted me, the two stepped outside. Then, without their knowledge, victor’s men removed the body. They placed it in the rental car. They staged the accident to make it look like that was how he died. And all of that would absolve nick of responsibility for the death. Now, there is evidence substantiating this version.

Victor: It is circumstantial.

Chance: Now, there are holes in this case, and I think it may be what nick says he cannot live with any longer — a lie.

Victoria: He never said “lie.”

Chance: I know.

Victor: So, chance, tell us, which scenario will you pursue?

Chance: [ Sighs ]

Billy: Yes. I am the grinning soul. Now, question — did you know it was me when you were singing his praises earlier?

Chelsea: Yep. You didn’t realize that?

Billy: No, I didn’T.

Chelsea: Not even when I said you respect for the grinning soul probably went both ways?

Billy: I thought you were being supportive.

Chelsea: I was, but I was also trying to get you to admit it. Don’t worry, I don’t think anybody else knows. Your secret is safe.

Billy: Good. Is that what you meant when you said that that is the real me and that I’m not some dude in a suit sitting in an office looking over budgets?

Chelsea: Was I wrong? I just think you’re happier talking into a microphone about whatever you want to talk about than sitting in a c-suite. And frankly, I think secretly you’re hoping lily gives you an ultimatum and you have to decide between executive and podcaster.

Billy: I don’t know. But I do hope I can make a decision without lily having to force my hand.

Chelsea: Guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Diane: What exactly are you asking? You can be talking about so many things.

Jack: Okay, so let me clarify. Us — you and me. What are you hoping for from this tenuous relationship?

Diane: Wow, you’re not messing around tonight. You want answers, and you want them now.

Jack: At this stage, after everything we’ve been through. Who has time to mess around?

Diane: There’s a lot of truth in that. So, if you’re asking if my feelings for you go beyond friendship, they do. You know me too well for me to deny it.

[ Chuckles ] When our hands touched before, I — I got butterflies in my stomach. I felt like a schoolgirl.

[ Chuckles ] And as conniving as I was in the past, I was never able to hide my emotions. Jack, that bet I made with myself about earning your friendship was absolutely true. There’s a part of me that wants more. And if I’m being completely honest, those feelings are both thrilling and terrifying.

[ Sighs ]

Jack: Terrifying? I didn’t realize it was that scary.

Diane: No, it’s not you. It’s me. It’s — it’s, my heart has been shut down for so long, I — I didn’t feel like I deserved affection, and I didn’t want it, because then it would make me feel even guiltier about everything I had done. But being back here, my heart is opening up, and it feels so good to be alive in that way again. But I know, in the end, there’s going to be some pain.

Jack: Why do you say that?

Diane: [ Sighs ] Because no matter how deep my feelings for you become, I know that you will never feel the same way about me.

Jack: I don’t —

Diane: You know, I wanted to delay this conversation forever, if possible, so I could — so I could just pretend for a while longer that there was still hope. I just… I didn’t want this daydream to end.

Jack: Well, maybe it doesn’t have to. I will admit that I didn’t see this coming either. But it must be clear to you, I — I, too, have some feelings.

Diane: [ Gasps ]

Jack: Diane. Diane?

Diane: [ Gasps ]

[ Sighs ] – It’s the birthday girl! – Let’s invite jacques

Jack: You seemed to drift off. Where did you go?

Diane: I — I’m — I’m not sure. I just — I think that drink went straight to my head. I just didn’t have enough to eat today.

Jack: So, did you hear what I asked?

Diane: Um, you wanted to know where I thought this was going?

Jack: Yeah, you’re someone who plans, makes goals. Now that you’re settled again in genoa city, I think it would be nice to make those again.

Diane: Well, you’re right. It’s — it’s a good idea.

[ Chuckles ] I just didn’t think that I would be having this conversation with you.

Jack: I’m a little surprised myself.

Diane: So, what exactly do you mean by “plans”?

Jack: Well, I mean, you can’t live in the athletic club forever, now that you have a job, now that kyle has let you back into his life. I mean, what is next for diane jenkins?

Diane: Oh, well, I, um — i haven’t given much thought to my living arrangements. Believe it or not, I’m taking a come-what-may approach to life. I find, if you plan too much for the future, then you don’t have a chance to dream.

Chance: What’s important here is that in both scenarios, ashland locke’s death was an accident, and no one meant for that man to die. And I believe that 100%. Nick was protecting his sister. He had no intention of taking a life. So, moving forward, we can all agree on that.

Victor: Yes, we can.

Chance: Now, context is also important. This man has put your family through hell — a man who lied about a fatal disease, solely for personal gain. I mean, a man like that, you just — you just don’t know what he’s capable of, how far he would go for revenge. So, with all that in mind, a despicable human being is dead. Sad, yes. But not necessarily a crime. Now, I think, given more time and more resources, I certainly could find a conspiracy that covers up the real cause of ashland locke’s death. But what would be the point? I don’t see any reason for anyone to stand trial for the death of a man who was not murdered. He’s put your family through enough trauma.

Nikki: So, what are you saying?

Chance: I will present the first scenario as my official version — that he was still alive, he made it to his car on his own, and he crashed. Terrible man died a terrible death, and no one will be punished for it.

Billy: Alright, it’s getting a little late. Time to get going.

Chelsea: Me, too.

Billy: Thank you very much for the therapy session/talk.

Chelsea: Anytime.

Billy: You’ve, uh — you’ve given me a lot to think about, so I appreciate that.

Chelsea: Hey, um, can I just ask you something before you go? I don’t mean to be pushy — or more pushy than usual — but did victoria mention that I went to see her and I asked her about johnny?

Billy: She did, yeah.

Chelsea: Well, she told me she would consider telling johnny that I’m his birth mother, but I can tell by the look on your face, she’s not on board, is she?

Billy: Just not good timing.

Chelsea: Yeah, I understand that, but the thing is, I’m kind of in a position now where I feel like I’m lying to connor. I’m withholding information from him. He’s at an age where he can understand what’s going on. And I feel like the longer I wait, the more he’s gonna resent me for not telling him earlier. And honestly, I think it could help johnny cope with ashland’s death, finding out that he has a brother.

[ Sighs ] Billy, will you please, please help me try to convince victoria?

Victor: Well, now, chance, I do admire your reasoning.

Nick: I’m glad a decision has been made.

Nikki: I hope we can put this whole episode behind us.

Chance: I want you all to know, I did not come to this decision lightly.

Victor: Of course you didn’T.

Chance: And I have been doing a lot of thinking about something that you said to me, victor. We do what we have to do to protect the ones we love. I’ve always believed in that. But this situation involved the law. And that is something else that I truly believe in. And I believe we did find justice here tonight, in a different way. It wasn’t by the books, but I need to believe we did what was just.

Victor: Chance, you did the right thing, and abby would be very proud of you.

Chance: Alright, well, I’m going to go home and I’m going to try to get some sleep tonight for a change.

Victor: You do that, alright?

Nick: Thanks for everything.

Victoria: Chance, I’ll walk you out. Hey, um, listen. I know it wasn’t easy for you, but you protected the family. And like dad said, you did the right thing.

Chance: [ Sighs ]

Victoria: It won’t be forgotten. If there’s anything that we —

Chance: I’m gonna stop you right there. Don’t even make me that offer. It’s not what I expect, and that’s absolutely not why I did this.

Victoria: I didn’t mean to imply that it was.

Chance: I hope you can find peace now. Okay everyone,

Jack: I’m surprised kyle and summer aren’t back yet.

Diane: Oh, they’re young and in love. They deserve a romantic night out once in a while.

Jack: I couldn’t agree more.

Diane: On the other hand, I need to get going. I have to be at work bright and early, and I want to make a good impression on my bosses.

Jack: Are you okay to drive after that little spell?

Diane: Oh, I’m fine. I just got a little lightheaded.

Jack: You sure? I — I could drive you home.. or call you a car.

Diane: No, jack, really, I’m — I’m fine. It’s nice to know you care.

Billy: Look, you’ve made some — some good arguments. Alright? And of course, I will talk to her about it, but right now, I think victoria needs a little bit of time.

Chelsea: I just don’t want to wait too long.

Billy: Look, chelse, I hear you, and like I said, I will talk to her, but I can’t promise anything. But if you want to get what I think you’re looking for, she’s gonna need a little bit of space to come to that decision.

Chelsea: Well, it means a lot to me to even try.

Billy: Of course. I will let you know. I’ll see you soon.

Chelsea: Bye.

Victoria: [ Sighs ] Chance came through for us.

Nikki: He made the right decision, after all.

Nick: Still, I’m afraid we may have compromised the most moral man in genoa city.

Victor: He knew damn well he didn’t have enough evidence to hold up in court. We may praise him till the cows come in that he made the right decision. The fact is, he didn’t want to lose.

Nick: That may be. Doesn’t change what happened that night.

Nikki: Honey, you saved your sister. You should be proud of that.

Nick: Yeah. I got to go.

Victoria: Nick? I hope he’ll be okay.

Victor: He’s going to have to deal with the fact that he killed a man, although he knows it was an accident.

Nikki: Even though the investigation cleared him, he’s still going to punish himself.

Victor: He needs all of our support, okay?

Chloe: I know what I saw.

Chelsea: No, you know what you think you saw.
