Chad and Cat arrive at a motel room in Vancouver, Canada. Chad talks about Clyde tracking their every move and hopes that he believes they are the couple that checked in across the street.

JJ and Gabi check in as Mr & Mrs. DiMera at the hotel in Vancouver.

Paulina, Lani, and Chanel are having facials at home after doing their nails. Paulina talks about wanting to see the twins as much as possible before Lani and Eli go back to Washington DC. Chanel talks about being so glad they had this time together. Lani comments that they wanted to see Johnny more too and thought she and Eli could double date with Chanel and Johnny, but maybe next time. Paulina remarks that it’s for the best which Lani questions. Chanel says it can wait but Paulina urges her to tell Lani how much of a jackass Johnny has been.

Johnny sits in the living rom of the DiMera Mansion with his tablet as EJ walks in. Johnny mentions working on filming a big confrontation between Chanel and Joy’s characters tomorrow. EJ suggests he not work so hard on that as he informs Johnny that Joy’s character will have to be recast since she won’t be available to tape those scenes.

Joy goes to Alex’s apartment and informs him that she came to say goodbye. Alex questions what she means. Joy says she’s going back to New York and quitting Body and Soul. Alex argues that she barely started and asks how she can quit. Joy says she’s unsure about acting as that was her mom’s dream and not her dream. Alex argues that everyone loves her and questions where this is coming from. Joy remarks that it would be best for everyone. Alex guesses she means best for Johnny because she doesn’t want Chanel to find out that she hooked up with her husband.

Johnny questions EJ as to why Joy would be unavailable. EJ reveals that when Joy was over for Thanksgiving, he made her a generous proposition to leave Body and Soul and Salem for good.

Cat asks Chad what if Clyde already suspects them or knows they are using Gabi and JJ as decoys. Chad feels if Clyde knew that, they’d already be dead. Chad starts unpacking his bag. Cat mentions that she assumed this was her room. Chad says it’s going to be his too. Cat points out that there’s only one bed. Chad explains that he doesn’t trust her, so he’s not letting her out of his sight.

JJ is given a letter from Clyde that was left for Mr. and Mrs. DiMera at the hotel front desk.

Joy tells Alex that she thought she could work with Chanel and Johnny with no drama but Chanel keeps inviting over and wanting to be her best friend, so it’s too much. Alex questions why Joy should be the one to leave town and how she’s going to break her contract. Joy explains that she has somebody taking care of it for her. Alex questions if it’s Johnny but Joy admits it’s EJ.

Johnny questions EJ as he reveals that he offered to buy out Joy’s contract and to give her a very generous sum to leave town. Johnny asks why he would do that. EJ explains how Johnny said it was torture to be between Chanel and Joy. EJ adds that it’s been a very difficult year so all he wanted was a fresh start for Thanksgiving but Joy came along and ruined everything. Johnny tries to argue that she didn’t mean to since Chanel wants Joy to feel at home in Salem. EJ remarks that Chanel is blissfully oblivious about Johnny and Joy, but if Joy keeps showing up, he knows the pressure on Johnny to tell Chanel the truth will be insurmountable so he took care of the problem for him. Johnny can’t believe it and argues that EJ can’t just make decisions and fix his problems as it’s none of his business. Johnny wants EJ to call Joy and undo this.

Paulina tells Lani about Johnny mistaking Stephanie for Chanel. Chanel argues that Paulina said she only cares about her being happy. Paulina says that’s true but Chanel says if it was, she wouldn’t be badmouthing Johnny. Paulina agrees to drop it. Chanel wishes Paulina hadn’t brought it up but explains to Lani that Johnny never actually saw who Alex was with after Seth Burns told him. Chanel then stops and says that she’s doing her best to forgive and forget, so they can move forward. Lani admits she can kind of see things from Johnny’s perspective, revealing that before they came to Salem, she kind of made the same mistake with JJ.

JJ gives Gabi the letter to read while he checks the room for listening devices in the room. Gabi reads the letter from Clyde, saying if they want to know where Abigail’s remains are, Chad will hand over Cat and he will be in touch in the morning with further instruction. Gabi tells JJ how nervous she is. JJ appreciates Gabi doing this for Abigail. Gabi responds that she’s doing this for herself too as she needs to make sure that Clyde never hurts anyone she cares about ever again.

Cat tells Chad that since Clyde has a bounty on her, she’s not leaving the room whether he has his eye on her or not. Chad brings up the possibility of her going rogue. Cat says her mom’s life is on the line, so she wouldn’t do that. Chad reminds her that he will do his best to find her mom, but his priority is finding Abigail’s remains and bringing her home. Cat remarks that she’s happy to know that his dead wife trumps her mom hopefully still being alive and where his priorities stand. Chad warns her not to talk about his wife like that ever again after what her and Mark did to he and his family. Cat complains about not getting to do anything but what Chad says because she apparently doesn’t have her own life anymore. Chad gets that she’s a victim too but decides he doesn’t have the energy for this as he has to call Jennifer to check in on the kids. Cat then goes to take a shower.

JJ tells Gabi that the room is all clear so he thinks they are good. JJ decides he will let Chad know about Clyde’s move, but then he gets a call from Jack. Gabi questions him not answering it. JJ says that Jennifer has called about six times and he knows they are just going to try to convince him to come home. Gabi suggests he just get it over with. JJ then answers Jack’s call and tells him not to bother trying to talk him out of this as nothing will change his mind. Jack then reveals to JJ that Doug has passed away. JJ is shocked and thanks him for letting him know as he hangs up. Gabi asks JJ what happened, so he reveals that Doug died.

Lani explains to Chanel and Paulina that JJ was having a difficult time with his mental health so they decided to take some space for him to get better, but she saw him with Gabi so she just assumed they were sleeping together then she got so upset that she ran to sleep with Eli. Paulina remarks that she bets Lani never called JJ a cheating slut. Lani says the point is that she upended all of their lives as that night she slept with Eli was the night she got pregnant with her first child. Chanel apologizes for bringing up a painful memory. Lani says it’s okay as she thinks about her lost child every day. Paulina appreciates Lani relating but doesn’t think the two situations are comparable, arguing that Lani and JJ were separated at the time. Chanel says she can see where Lani is coming from and brings up that she could never get over when Allie cheated on her so she’s thankful that Johnny didn’t turn to someone else when he thought she was sneaking around with Alex, because if he had done that, she doesn’t think she could live with that…

Johnny asks EJ to call Joy and retract his offer. EJ says there’s no point as she already accepted. Johnny wants him to tell her that he changed his mind which EJ says is bad form. Johnny asks how he will explain Joy suddenly leaving her job. EJ suggests saying she’s homesick for New York City. EJ states that Joy will get her golden parachute, no one will know the wiser, and they will live happily ever after. EJ insists to Johnny that this is the best solution. Johnny calls it blackmail while EJ notes that it’s technically bribery but at least it’s not murder. EJ asks Johnny to let him do this for him.

Alex tells Joy it’s a terrible deal and questions why she would accept that. Joy says she thought about it for a whole day and thinks it is the best thing for everybody. Joy adds that she could use the money and a new beginning. Alex questions her walking away from her first acting job and how it will be terrible to her. Alex argues against Joy getting forced out of town when she loves this job. Alex suggests Joy be smart about this as this is vintage DiMera crap playing God with people’s lives. Alex advises Joy to tell EJ to take his offer and shove it.

Chad finishes a call with Jennifer to check on the kids as Cat comes out of the shower. Cat asks Chad what’s wrong. Chad informs her that Doug passed away shortly after they left. Cat says she’s so sorry. Chad comments that Doug was so full of life and the house will be really quiet when they go home. Cat talks about Doug being sweet and never saying an unkind word to her. Chad feels he should be home with the kids since they loved Doug and they were lucky to live there. Chad talks about Doug always being there for the kids. Chad wishes his own father was more like Doug. Cat repeats that she’s really sorry for his loss and asks if there’s anything she can do, but Chad says there’s nothing.

Gabi tells JJ that she’s sorry about Doug and how they all wish they could have a love like Doug and Julie. Gabi asks if he’s okay. JJ talks about how he and Doug had a whole music set for Christmas. JJ recalls just talking about how Doug gave him Alice’s old wedding ring to propose to Lani even though he knew he was jumping in to something he wasn’t ready for. JJ guesses it all worked out now that Lani is married to Doug’s grandson. JJ cries that he’s really going to miss Doug. Gabi says she’s so sorry as she hugs JJ.

Lani tells Paulina and Chanel that the most traumatic thing can bring you closer to someone. Lani says losing her son David Abraham was the most painful thing she had ever been through but grieving together brought her and Eli closer together. Paulina points out that now they have twins and a beautiful life together. Lani admits there were bumps along the way. Chanel talks about just wanting to make Johnny feel better when he was sick. Lani says if they feel that way, she has nothing to worry about and their marriage is strong like her and Eli. Chanel says she hopes so.

Johnny tells EJ that he hates this and it’s not fair to anyone. EJ argues that if he doesn’t want Chanel to know the truth, then he knows this is for the best. EJ knows Johnny feels bad but says he shouldn’t destroy his entire marriage for a one time lapse of judgment. Johnny reluctantly gives in and thanks EJ, but notes that there is one more loose end he should know about. Johnny informs EJ that someone else found out about him and Joy.

Joy tells Alex that she can’t back out of a deal she made with EJ DiMera as he’s seriously scary and the DiMeras are a mob family. Alex argues that the district attorney shouldn’t be bullying and blackmailing people. Joy says he did both and she’s about to meet EJ to give her check. Joy says she can’t back out and she doesn’t want anyone to ever know the truth including Chanel. Joy asks Alex to stay out of this.

Cat suggests maybe Chad could make it back to Salem in time for Doug’s funeral but Chad says he already missed it as Julie didn’t want to bother him and figured he should stay focused on going after Clyde. Cat asks if they can try not to fight as she doesn’t want to add to his grief and stress. Chad says they’ll just do what they need to do to get Clyde and then get the hell out of here. Chad calls JJ and informs him that he just spoke to Jennifer. JJ notes that he just talked to Jack, who told him about Doug. Chad says he’s sorry they weren’t there. JJ knows Doug would want them to be there doing what they are doing for Abigail. Chad asks if there’s any news from Clyde. JJ informs Chad that he left him a note that said he’ll be in touch in the morning. Chad decides they’ll just come up with a plan for when they hear from him then.

Chanel asks if Lani is okay. Lani says she’s just sad about leaving tomorrow. Chanel says they are too but they’ll see her again for Christmas. Lani says as long as Eli can get time off. Paulina jokes that she tried to talk them in to coming back but they are having too much fun in DC. Lani insists it’s about their jobs and not wanting to uproot the twins, but they aren’t ruling out coming back. Chanel says until they do come back, there will be a lot of visits. Chanel decides she should get dressed to get back to her husband. Chanel tells Lani she loves her as they hug and says she’s so glad they go to do this. Lani talks about how she gets to watch Chanel on Body and Soul. Chanel admits she’s starting to wonder if it’s such a good idea to work with her husband. Lani knows how that is but says it does have it’s perks. Chanel admits they get to see each other more and it has been good, so she thinks it’s only going to get better.

EJ questions why Joy was shooting her mouth off to Alex. EJ doesn’t think Joy is as innocent as Johnny makes her out to be since she’s caused trouble at every turn. Johnny argues that Joy just needed someone to talk to and didn’t plan on telling Alex, but he said he wouldn’t tell anyone because he cares about Chanel and doesn’t want her to get hurt. EJ asks if it’s occurred to him that Alex might use the information to make sure he always has the upper hand with Johnny. Johnny doesn’t think he would do that. EJ hopes for his sake that he’s right about that.

Alex tells Joy that he thinks she’s going to regret this decision, but he promised not to say anything to Chanel so he won’t. Joy thanks him and says she’s sure they’ll find someone else to play Regan Holloway. Alex says he enjoyed working with her and hopes maybe their paths will cross again someday. Alex tells her that he’s sorry as Joy then exits his apartment. Alex then puts his jacket on, grabs his keys, and heads out as well.

Cat tells Chad that she couldn’t find a delivery service and there’s no room service but they have peanuts. Chad thanks her and looks out the window. Cat says she’s pretty exhausted so she’s just going to go to sleep. Cat tells Chad that he should take the bed but Chad says it was his idea to share a room, so he insists that she take the bed. Chad says he might be on the lookout tonight anyway. Cat feels they should take turns and he should get some sleep too. Chad doesn’t think he could if he wanted to and tells Cat to get some sleep, so she says goodnight. Cat lays down in bed while Chad remains looking out the window.

JJ tells Gabi that Chad gave them his gold card so she can order whatever she wants from room service. Gabi asks what he wants but JJ says he’s not hungry and just wants to get to bed so they can get to tomorrow. Gabi feels the same and says she’s exhausted, so no food for her either. JJ tells Gabi to take the bed but Gabi argues that it’s not like they haven’t shared a bed before and they both need a good night sleep for tomorrow. Gabi says there’s plenty of room for both of them so JJ asks if she’s sure. Gabi says she is so they both get in bed to sleep.

Lani and Paulina go to Lani’s son David Abraham’s grave. Lani notes that somebody already brought flowers. Paulina reveals that she did as she comes to visit every few weeks since he’s forever part of their family. Lani talks about thinking about him all the time and says she loves him so much.

Joy meets EJ outside of the Brady Pub. EJ gives her the check and orders her to pack her things and go.

Alex goes to the DiMera Mansion and confronts Johnny, asking where his daddy is. Johnny says he’s not there and asks what he can do for him. Alex assumes that Johnny knows EJ offered Joy money to leave town and assumes that Johnny put him up to it. Johnny assures that it was not his idea and he feels awful about it. Alex asks if he doesn’t feel awful enough to stop him. Johnny knows Joy told him about what happened between them. Alex confirms Joy told him all about it and calls this a huge loss for the show. Johnny says Joy can be recast while Alex remarks that Johnny is just as replaceable. Alex argues that Joy doesn’t want to leave her job and admitted she loves her job when he tried to talk her out of leaving. Johnny gets upset and tells Alex that this is none of his business, telling him to butt out before he messes everything up, right as Chanel comes home and asks what the hell is going on in here.

Update written by Joseph

Belle sits in the living room, looking at her wedding ring on her finger as Marlena comes in and joins her. Marlena says she heard Shawn’s voice and thought about saying hello, but figured they might want some time together. Marlena asks how it went and if they were able to work things out. Belle says no, but they did come to a decision and announces their marriage is over.

Shawn sits at the Brady Pub. Philip comes in and calls him his favorite nephew. Shawn remarks that he thought his day couldn’t suck any worse.

Stephanie is at the Body and Soul studio, doing PR work on the phone. Stephanie convinces Daily Confidential to not run the Body and Soul spoilers by promising them an exclusive interview with Alex, shirtless. Stephanie hangs up and declares that now she just has to get the other numerous publications not to run the leaks. Stephanie gets a call but says that will have to wait until tomorrow as she cannot deal with one more headache today. Xander then arrives and declares that he knows what she’s been up to, so he’s here to put a stop to it.

Ciara comments to Lucas on Leo really letting them have it. Lucas questions Leo being an expert on Steven after spending five minutes with him. Ciara worries about if Leo was right that Steven was innocent and they just accused the wrong person of stealing Alice’s necklace.

At the Horton house, Doug III approaches the mantle and looks at the family photos as he then pulls out Alice’s diamond necklace from his pocket. Hope then comes home and calls out for Julie, asking if anyone is there. Hope enters the living room and asks who Doug is and if she knows him. He responds that his name is Doug Williams. Hope gets upset and argues that her father is Doug Williams, not him.

Shawn tells Philip that he’s not in the mood for him. Philip says he’s not looking for trouble and just wanted to say he’s sorry about his Grandfather as he was a great man. Shawn doesn’t think he will ever get used to thinking of Doug in the past tense. Philip relates to feeling the same about Victor. Philip thought Shawn was on the wagon. Shawn questions that being his business. Philip advises him that getting hammered won’t make the grief go away. Shawn then informs him that it’s non-alcoholic. Philip says he’s glad for his and Belle’s sake. Shawn responds that whether he drinks or doesn’t is not Belle’s problem anymore. Philip asks what he means. Shawn then reveals that they are getting divorced.

Stephanie asks Xander what the problem is and says to make it quick because she’s busy. Xander asks her to put a stop to the propaganda machine on Philip’s behalf, effective immediately.

Lucas argues that Ciara knows better than to trust Leo Stark, insisting that Leo and Steven only got along because they are both liars and thieves. Ciara suggests Steven could change but Lucas insists that Steven took the necklace and asks who else would do something like that on the day they say goodbye to Doug.

Hope questions who Doug III is and why he is in her family’s house. Julie then comes in and is shocked to see Hope as they embrace. Julie thought she wasn’t coming and asks if Bo woke up. Hope reveals that he did not wake up after all, but insists that he will someday. Hope apologizes for not getting there sooner. Julie says they will keep praying for Bo and that it’s so good to see her. Hope questions what is going on here and who this person in the house is. Julie hugs Hope and explains that this is Doug’s grandson and Hope’s new nephew.

Marlena asks if Belle was taken by surprise that Shawn wanted to end the marriage. Belle says it was hard to hear but admits that she had been feeling the same way for awhile. Marlena guesses she was just hoping they could work it out. Belle says she was hoping that too, but the feelings they once shared just aren’t there anymore. Belle adds that she’ll always love Shawn and he’s a good man but she thinks their marriage has been over for awhile.

Philip argues that Shawn and Belle have broken up but always end up back together. Shawn says this time feels final. Philip says he’s sorry to hear that which Shawn questions. Philip assures that he has no interest in going after Belle. Shawn asks if that means things are going well for he and Chloe but Philip informs him that things didn’t work out for them either. Philip remarks that he has far more pressing matters to deal with than his love life, like reclaiming his birth right.

Stephanie questions Xander’s problem. Xander tells her it’s obvious that she’s been helping Philip and complains about biased articles about him. Stephanie responds that whether he likes it or not, Philip has a legitimate claim on Titan due to the letter from Victor stating he wanted the company to go to his son, Philip. Xander argues that Victor left him the company in his will. Stephanie asks why he’s so worried about her PR if he’s so sure. Xander argues that they know how it can affect public opinion and suggests that Stephanie start spinning things in his direction instead of Philip’s.

Hope tells Julie that she kind of remembers Doug saying he had a son through IBF. Julie explains that man was this Doug’s father. Hope question why he’s calling himself Doug Williams. Doug explains that his dad told him that he named him after his biological father, so he only recently changed his last name. Julie calls it a miracle for Doug’s grandson to appear. Hope welcomes him and he says he’s very happy to be here among family. Hope asks about Ciara and Shawn. Julie says they had to leave but informs Hope that Ciara opened the time capsule which was full of old family heirlooms including Alice’s diamond necklace. Julie asks if she’d like to see it. Hope says she wants to see all the mementos later, but cries that right now she just wants to see Doug.

Marlena tells Belle that she’s so proud of her for being so strong and knowing who she is. Belle responds that she’s not feeling that strong right now, just very sad. Belle cries that she’s loved Shawn since she was a teenager and even though they had ups and downs, she always assumed they would be together forever. Belle remarks on going to law school to end up drawing up her own divorce papers. Marlena asks Belle to wait there as she has an idea of something that might make her feel a little better.

Shawn questions Philip thinking Victor’s letter trumps his will. Philip questions if he’s saying he thinks Xander deserves the company. Shawn assures that he’s not, says he’s glad that Philip is going after the company and he hopes he gets it.

Stephanie questions Xander wanting her to spin in his direction. Xander brings up that Stephanie once had a mutually beneficial contract with Titan and suggests their two companies could make magic again. Stephanie questions Xander wanting her to work for him. Xander says he’ll make it worth her while and offers to double what Philip is paying her.

Doug III tells Julie that it had to be tough for Hope to miss her dad’s funeral but understands why she did if she thought Bo was waking up from a coma. Julie talks about Bo being the love of Hope’s life, thinking he was dead, then finding him only to lose him again. Ciara and Lucas return, so Julie introduces them to Doug. Julie tells Ciara that Hope was there which surprises her, but causes her to realize that Bo did not wake up. Julie encourages that they have to keep praying for him. Ciara asks where Hope went. Doug says she went to go visit their Grandfather which Ciara questions. Julie then reveals that he is Doug’s grandson, also named Doug Williams.

Hope goes to the cemetery and places flowers on Doug’s grave. Hope cries that she’s really sorry she didn’t get there sooner, but she knows he’s always with her only now she’ll never be able to hug him again and she already misses him. Hope says he will always be in her heart and she loves him so much. Jennifer then joins Hope and hugs her as she cries.

Marlena brings Belle chocolate chip cookies and ice cream as her heart break cure which makes Belle laugh.

Philip questions Shawn saying he’s on his side. Shawn confirms that he is pulling for him. Philip asks why. Shawn says they’ve never seen eye to eye but they grew up together and he watched Victor groom him to run Titan, so he deserves to run it. Philip thanks him and says it means a lot coming from him. Shawn thinks they can both agree that Xander is an untrustworthy menace that will run their family’s reputation in to the ground. Shawn warns that Xander will come after Philip with everything he has. Philip responds that he’s ready for everything he throws at him, which is why he brought in Stephanie as his secret weapon.

Xander asks if Stephanie will come back to Titan. Stephanie calls his offer tempting but says she’s going to pass which Xander questions. Stephanie declares that she made a commitment to Philip so she intends to see it through. Xander asks if that’s all there is to it and brings up their history, asking if Stephanie is standing beside Philip now because she wants back in his bed.

Jennifer encourages Hope to think about how happy Doug would’ve been to see the whole family together. Hope agrees and comments that Julie must have been happy to have Steven there. Hope says she hasn’t seen him since she was a child and asks how he is. Jennifer says Steven is good. Hope is glad as she knows he had his challenges. Jennifer tells her that she’s sorry about Bo as she knows Hope thought he was coming around. Hope talks about being torn as she wanted to be there for Doug but she was terrified to not be there if Bo woke up. Jennifer assures that everyone understood she made the right decision and what’s important is that she’s here now. Jennifer adds that if anyone understood the length she’d go for the love of her life, Doug would. Jennifer points out all the times Doug moved Heaven and Earth for Julie.

Ciara calls it wild to think that Doug had a grandson that they knew nothing about. Ciara asks if Shawn knows yet. Julie says not yet and explains to Doug III that Shawn is Ciara’s brother. Lucas calls it overwhelming to have a lot of new family members to keep track of. Lucas relates to being about Doug’s age when he found out he was apart of the family and he can’t imagine his life without them. Julie mentions wanting to show Hope the contents of the time capsule but she wanted to go see Doug. Lucas starts to say there’s something they need to tell Hope but Doug III interrupts to ask if there’s anything to eat, so Julie goes to the kitchen to heat something up for him. Doug guesses they were about to tell Julie about the missing necklace. Ciara questions how he knew about that. He explains that Jennifer and Marie didn’t want to tell Julie about it as they were concerned about her state of mind. Ciara agrees that it would be devastating for Julie to find out that her brother stole from the family on the day they buried Doug.

Stephanie tells Xander that it’s beyond insulting that he thinks she’s choosing Philip because she wants to sleep with him. Xander remarks that a conspiracy theorist would think she’s aiming higher and that she could be the next queen of Titan. Stephanie argues that none of that interests her and insists that her relationship with Philip is strictly professional. Xander brings up her relationship with Alex. Stephanie then tells Xander to get out. Xander warns her to be careful because Philip will use her to get what he wants and then toss her aside. Xander tells her to have a nice night and exits the studio.

Philip tells Shawn that Stephanie has done a masterful job so far. Shawn insists he’s going to need more than good press to get control of Titan. Philip calls it just step one and says it was important to let the public know he’s capable of running the company. Shawn asks if he’s worried about things getting messy working so close with Stephanie. Philip says they agreed to keep their relationship strictly professional. Shawn questions where he’s heard that before. Shawn then gets a text from Ciara that Hope is in town. Philip says to send them his best and adds that he’s truly sorry about Shawn and Belle. Shawn thanks him and says it’s for the best as it’s time to see who they are as separate people with separate lives.

Belle tells Marlena that she did make her feel better which makes her happy. Marlena asks what to do now and suggests watching a movie. Marlena suggests they watch Doug’s favorite movie “Love, Actually” which Belle agrees with.

Julie, Ciara, Lucas, and Doug III eat together until Ciara gets a text from Shawn and says they have an errand to run so she’ll be back soon. Ciara tells Doug it was nice to meet him and welcomes him to the family as she then exits.

Hope informs Jennifer that she just met Doug Williams. Jennifer acknowledges him as the grandson that Doug never knew he had and calls it unbelievable. Hope remarks that’s one word for it. Jennifer says she knows her detective look and asks what she’s thinking. Hope admits that there’s something about Doug that she doesn’t trust and suggests calling her half brother to see if he’s even his son. Hope states that something just doesn’t sit right with her about this whole thing. Jennifer gets it as she felt the same way about the woman that Chad and Jack found in Missouri, claiming to be Abigail. Jennifer says she knew in her gut that it was wrong. Hope says she was unfortunately right and she’s so sorry. Jennifer questions Hope thinking Doug is lying about his identity. Hope responds that it would be great if someone was keeping an eye on him after she flys back to Europe to be with Bo. Jennifer guesses she’s referring to her which Hope confirms. Hope tells Jennifer it’s so good to see her and she’s missed her so much as they hug. Jennifer tells Hope that she can always count on her. Jennifer then realizes she has to go and says she’s so sorry. Jennifer offers to give her a ride back to the house but Hope says she wants to stay a little longer at the cemetery. Jennifer says she hates to leave her and that she loves her as she then exits. Hope looks back at Doug’s grave.

Philip goes to the Body and Soul studio to see Stephanie and asks if she’s okay as she seems a little tense. Stephanie informs him that Xander just darkened her doorstep. Philip asks what the hell he wanted. Stephanie responds that first Xander ordered her to stop generating positive press for Philip, then he tried to get her to drop Philip as a client and come work for him, even offering to double her pay but she turned him down flat. Philip tells her that he’s happy to hear that but knows it must have been tempting as it’s a lot of money. Stephanie responds that there’s not enough gold that would make her work for Xander and she doesn’t know how Sarah puts up with him. Philip asks what Xander said to her that got her so mad. Stephanie says it doesn’t matter but Philip feels it might make her feel better to talk about it. Stephanie then informs Philip that Xander basically accused her of being a gold digger who sleeps with every guy she works with. Philip calls Xander a jackass. Stephanie declares that he should actually be thanking Xander since after his visit, she’s more determined than ever to help Philip take control of Titan. Philip likes her fire. Stephanie assures that she’s more fired up than ever to help him win this.

Marlena informs Belle that she spoke with Shane earlier to try and get in touch with John, so she’s going to check back with Shane and heads to her room. Belle picks up her phone and calls her daughter Claire. Belle tells her about Doug’s memorial service and says everyone asked about her so she’s definitely missed. Belle adds that she wanted to talk to her about her and Shawn.

Hope remains at Doug’s grave and talks about being so proud to be his daughter. Hope thanks him for everything that he gave her. Hope says he always put his family first and whenever she felt worried or alone, she would close her eyes and see his smile as she’d imagine him telling her everything would be alright. Hope wishes she could hold his hand now. Shawn and Ciara then arrive and embrace Hope. They tell Hope that they are sorry about Bo. Hope insists that Bo is going to wake up and urges them not to give up Hope. Ciara knows how hard it must have been for Hope to leave Bo’s bedside. Hope states that today is about Doug and tells them how much Doug loved them. They vow to always keep Doug in their hearts as they hug.

Lucas and Julie tell Doug III about the time JJ put pot in brownies. Jennifer comes home and joins them. Lucas talks about officially welcoming Doug in to the family while Jennifer thinks back to Hope expressing her doubts about him.

Jennifer, Lucas, Ciara, and Marie return to the Horton house. . Marie asks about the time capsule. Ciara tells Marie about Alice’s diamond necklace that had been locked away for over 60 years. Ciara goes to the time capsule and says she could’ve sworn that Julie put the necklace back in the box. Jennifer confirms that she did but Ciara reveals it’s not in there and questions where it could’ve gone. Lucas says it better turn up soon because the necklace was priceless. Jennifer comments on the sentimental value. Marie argues that they would’ve noticed if someone broke in and stole it. Lucas suggests maybe whoever took it didn’t need to break in…

Steven Olson sits at the Tom and Alice plaque in the town square. Steven comments on who knew the treasure that Alice was holding in the house. Steven admits the old him might have been tempted by that diamond necklace, but he’s a changed man. Leo appears at a nearby table and quotes Dolly Parton to Steven.

Shawn shows up at Marlena’s to see Belle and says he knows he should’ve called first but they didn’t get much of a chance to talk at Doug’s memorial. Shawn notes that Belle seemed a little surprised to see him. Belle says probably as surprised as he was to see her at the memorial. Belle explains that Claire got sick and couldn’t make it, so she hopes she didn’t overstep. Shawn assures that she didn’t and he’s glad she came.

Julie sits at the cemetery, crying over Doug and says all she ever wanted was to be his wife, so she questions what to do now. Julie is then approached by a young man, who introduces himself as Doug Williams. Julie tells him that Doug Williams is deceased. He responds that he knows that, but he’s very much alive. Julie says she doesn’t know what his story is, but this is Doug’s grave and she was his wife. Doug responds that he knows that and that they were crazy about each other since Doug got out of jail and came to Salem. Doug reveals that he also got out of jail today and came to Salem to see Julie.

Marie tells Lucas that it doesn’t make any sense since they would’ve seen someone steal the necklace if they didn’t break in. Jennifer points out that they weren’t close to the necklace at every moment. Marie suggests maybe Julie put it somewhere for safe keeping but Lucas and Jennifer assure that they saw her put it back in the box before the funeral. Lucas notes that Julie went upstairs to get ready with Steven.

Leo tells Steven that he used to make a living off overhearing things he wasn’t supposed to hear but assures him that hearing him talking to the plaque of Tom and Alice will go no further than here. Steven questions who he is. Leo introduces himself. Steven confesses that he could really use a drink, so Leo invites him to join him.

Belle tells Shawn that Doug’s memorial was a beautiful ceremony and so many people came to pay respects. Shawn thanks her for coming all the way. Belle says she wanted to be there for him to show support and how much she loves Doug and Julie. Shawn tells Belle that Doug thought the world of her, as does Julie. Shawn adds that since they are finally in the same place at the same time, he thinks they need to talk about their marriage. Belle mentions that Marlena was just asking how they were doing and she just told her that they hadn’t seen each other in awhile until today, so it’s been a strange year. Shawn agrees and talks about going to rehab and focusing on his recovery, so he hasn’t had much time or energy to work on them and their relationship. Belle says she’s just so glad he’s getting the help he needed. Belle understands that he was under a tremendous amount of stress while worrying about Bo and taking care of Hope which is why she thought it was best to give him space and that’s why she went to Hong Kong. Belle admits that all the time apart and space between them has prevented them from confronting their issues. Shawn agrees that what they need to do now is make a decision.

Leo assumes Steven is in Salem for Doug’s funeral. Steven confirms that and informs Leo that Julie is his sister. Leo comments that most people in Salem don’t think very highly of him and jokes that he would feel pressure to live up to expectations if they did like him. Steven says he’s sorry to hear that but he finds Leo to be very personable and charming. Steven adds that he’s impressed by his self awareness. Leo tells him that he feels the same and already considers him a friend. Steven responds that it’s good to have a new friend. Leo asks how long it’s been since he has been in Salem. Steven responds that it’s been many moons. Leo asks what caused him to abandon the town. Steven reveals that he had to leave Salem, so Leo says he would love to know why. Steven agrees to share since he sees Leo is not judgmental. Leo assures that he won’t judge so Steven explains that he got involved in some shady dealings and did some questionable things that he shouldn’t have. Steven informs Leo that one of his petty crimes was skimming tips when he worked at Doug and Julie’s coffee shop and then when he worked for Julie’s antique shop, he stored some questionable goods there which resulted in Julie inadvertently selling canes filled with cocaine. Steven says he finds it cleansing to open up about his past mistakes and reveals that he was also involved in fencing stolen jewels. Leo informs Steven that he too has dabbled in to jewel theft. Steven tells Leo that his involvement was with diamonds from Trish Clayton, who lifted them from a drug smuggler name Durand and he was caught in the middle. Steven says he’s deeply ashamed of the man he was at that time and how he lived his life, but says he’s put all of that behavior behind him and his life of crime is a thing of the past.

Ciara questions if Lucas thinks Uncle Steven took the diamond necklace. Marie says it wouldn’t be surprising if he did, revealing that Steven left town because of stolen diamonds. Jennifer can’t imagine that Steven would commit a crime against his own sister after she just lost her husband. Lucas says he can believe it after what Marie said and wants to go find Steven to question him. Ciara asks where to find him. Jennifer notes that he said he was going to see Tom and Alice’s plaque, so Lucas and Ciara go to find him. Marie remarks to Jennifer that this is shaping up to be quite the family reunion.

Julie questions Doug Williams getting out of jail and coming to Salem to see her. Julie remarks that next he’s going to tell her that his cellmate was Bill Horton. He responds that his last name wasn’t Horton, but his name was Bill. Julie questions him being Doug Williams but he says not exactly. Julie asks if he just got up today and decided he was. Doug explains that he was born Douglas LeClair after his father, but he changed his name. Julie realizes he is Douglas LeClair’s son. Doug explains that his father told him the story of his life and how his real father was Doug, which makes him Doug’s grandson. Julie is shocked and hugs him.

Jennifer thinks Lucas may be jumping to conclusions. Marie argues that Steven has a history with stolen diamonds, so she’s afraid history is beginning to repeat itself.

Steven suggests to Leo that they get another round of drinks. Leo starts to tell Steven about his recent heartbreak which came after he accused Javi of doing something he most likely didn’t do. Steven remarks that he hates when that happens, as Lucas then arrives with Ciara and asks Steven where the hell are the diamonds.

Belle reminds Shawn that last year they started having problems over Shawn’s guilt over his dad and blaming himself for Bo being in a coma. Shawn informs Belle that Bo squeezed Hope’s hand which excites Belle. She asks if the doctors think this means he’s waking up. Shawn says they aren’t sure but Hope is very hopeful and that’s why she didn’t come to Doug’s funeral which Belle calls understandable. Belle prays it means that Bo is finally waking up. Belle asks if Bo waking up would mean Shawn would finally be able to let go of all the guilt. Shawn says if they get the miracle, there’s no telling what kind of condition Bo will be in or if he will fully recover. Belle guesses he’ll find a way to still hold on to all of that guilt. Shawn says he’s working on that in therapy and coming to grips with the fact that he made a terrible mistake but he can’t keep beating himself up over it. Shawn adds that therapy also taught him that he’s changed which Belle questions. Shawn declares that if he can’t get past this guilt, he doesn’t think he will ever be able to be the man that he was, that Belle fell in love with. Shawn thinks that maybe it’s time they end their marriage.

Steven asks what Lucas is talking about. Lucas says he’s talking about Alice’s necklace from the time capsule that is now missing. Steven questions thinking he took it. Ciara says they don’t know what to think. Steven questions them jumping to the conclusion that he stuffed it in his pocket and ran off with it. Lucas explains that they know his history because Marie told them all about his track record with diamonds. Lucas points out that now Steven is here with Leo and questions if Leo is helping him. Steven repeats that he has no idea what he’s talking about. Lucas tells Steven to drop the innocent act, bringing up that Leo stole his cousin Abigail’s jewelry and tried to sell it to the guy who murdered her. Steven argues that he doesn’t even know Leo and that he just invited him for a drink. Lucas shouts that’s enough and that they know he has the necklace. Lucas tells him to just be a man and admit it.

Jennifer tells Marie that she knows Steven got in to a lot of trouble in Salem but that was a long time ago and Julie said he was a changed man. Marie says Julie wants to believe the best in her brother, but in her experience, a leopard doesn’t change it’s spots. Jennifer worries that Julie will be heartbroken if it’s true.

Doug III tells Julie that he wanted to pay his respects to his grandfather as he just recently found out about him but he’s sorry he didn’t get the chance to meet him. He adds that he is glad to meet Julie. Julie questions him just getting out of jail. He admits he got in to some trouble on the way to Salem, but he made it. Julie asks if he’s tired after all the travel. He says he is pretty beat up and could use some rest, so he asks if she knows any cheap hotels around. Julie calls him her family, so he’s coming home with her.

Marie wonders if Lucas and Ciara found Steven while Jennifer points out that they aren’t answering their phones. Julie then returns and introduces Jennifer and Marie to Doug Williams, the grandson of her Doug. Marie asks how. Julie explains that he is the son of Douglas LeClair. Jennifer tells him it’s so nice he’s here after all this time. Julie says he came to pay respects to his Grandfather and now he’s going to stay with them for awhile. Julie calls it the second miracle of the day after Ciara opened the time capsule. Doug asks about the time capsule. Julie starts to explain and asks where it is so she can show him all the family treasures. Jennifer claims they put it away for now for safe keeping.

Steven tells Lucas and Ciara that he’s not admitting to stealing anything because he didn’t take any necklace, but argues that it belonged to his Grandmother so he has as much of a right to it as any of them. Lucas argues that they know he took it. Steven says he’s leaving. Lucas wants to search him but Steven calls him an idiot if he thinks he can get away with assaulting him in public. Steven tells Leo that he’s sorry he got his heart broke, but if he’s interested in getting back out there, his son Spencer is gay so he should look him up. Steven then walks away.

Belle tells Shawn that even though she’s had the same thought, it’s different hearing him say it out loud. Shawn apologizes and calls her the best person he knows, but says he doesn’t deserve her. Belle disagrees but Shawn says that’s how he feels. Shawn states that so much has happened and after Bo went in to his coma, there was Talia and everything that happened before this with Jan and EJ. Shawn adds that for the better part of the past year, they have been apart and they haven’t had the trust they had in so long. Belle asks if he doesn’t think they can get back to that. Shawn asks if she does. Belle cries that she knows she still loves him. Shawn responds that he still loves her too and they will always be connected through their daughter Claire. Shawn reiterates that he thinks it’s time that maybe they just let go. Belle guesses there’s no reason to make this any harder and says she can draw up some simple divorce papers to send over to him. Shawn decides he should get going. Belle asks him to let her know about Bo which he agrees to do. Belle tells Shawn to take care of himself and hugs him. Shawn then exits.

Julie tells Doug III that she will make up the guest room for him. Marie mentions that she has a plane to catch so she can’t stay. Marie and Julie hug, talking about how great it was to see each other. Julie says they will text and video chat to keep in touch. Julie then heads upstairs. Doug asks about the time capsule being hidden in the house, noting that’s not something you hear every day. Jennifer and Marie explain that they would show it to him, but a very valuable necklace in it has gone missing and they can’t tell Julie because she would be very upset since it belonged to her Grandmother. Marie hopes they can get it back before Julie misses it.

Ciara asks Leo if Steven said anything to him about the necklace. Leo tells her to give it a rest, assuring that he knows nothing about a necklace. Leo asks if it ever occurred to them that he could be innocent instead of treating him like a common criminal. Ciara asks why it matters to Leo when they just met. Leo says they had an instant connection and calls him a very charming guy. Leo adds that he knows what it’s like to be accused of a crime you didn’t commit, bringing up when everybody was so sure that he stabbed Sonny and murdered Abigail. Leo points out that he was innocent, so maybe Steven is too. Leo remarks that Ciara and Lucas have no business judging anyone anyways when Lucas kidnapped his own wife while Ciara is married to a convicted serial killer, so they shouldn’t throw stones. Leo then gets up and walks away.

Steven climbs through the window to return to the bedroom at the Horton house. Julie comes in and questions him not coming through the door. Steven responds that he didn’t want to make a big scene, but it’s time for him to leave again. Julie says he can’t leave and says she has the most amazing story to tell. Steven asks her to save it for next time as he has to go now despite loving spending time with her. Julie complains that he’s abandoning her again. Steven promises that he will be back. Steven repeats how sorry he is about Doug. Julie cries that Doug always wanted to know how Steven’s doing. Steven says now she knows. Julie goes over Steven becoming a changed man. Steven calls it a work in progress. Steven tells Julie that he loves her and to take care of herself. Julie says she loves him too. Steven then asks Julie not to believe everything she hears about him. Julie asks what he means. Steven responds that he’ll be in touch and exits back through the window.

Marie guesses she should call a cab so she doesn’t miss her flight but Jennifer decides she will give her a ride. Marie says goodbye to Doug III while Jennifer says she’ll see him later. Marie and Jennifer then exit together. Doug approaches the mantle and looks at the family photos as he then pulls out Alice’s diamond necklace from his pocket.

He noticed that Shawn had a beer and thought Shawn was sober. Shawn set his mind at ease by saying that it was a non-alcoholic drink. He was glad because he thought that would come between him and Belle. Shawn dropped the bomb that they were getting divorced. It felt final this time. Philip assured him that he wasn’t after Belle. He wanted to focus on reclaiming his birthright. Shawn hoped he got it. Ciara and Lucas wondered if Steven was innocent of stealing the diamond and if they accused the wrong person of taking it. Lucas didn’t think anyone else would take the necklace on the day of Doug’s funeral. At the Horton house, Doug III looked at Alice’s picture on the mantle. He took out the diamond necklace from his pocket. Hope arrived and called out for Julie. Doug III introduced himself to Hope. She was offended and told him that her father was Doug Williams. THIS STILL NEEDS EXTENSIVE EDITING!

[solemn music]

I heard Shawn’s voice. I was going to come and say hello, but then I thought you might want some time together. How did that go? Were you able to work things out?

No, but we did come to a decision. Our marriage is over.

[dramatic music]

[twangy guitar version of “Auld Lang Syne”]

If it isn’t my favorite nephew.

Oh, just when I thought my day couldn’t suck any worse.

[dramatic music]

Look, I know the spoilers are driving a ton of traffic to your website, but do you really want to be responsible for ruining every plot twist for “Body & Soul” fans? [scoffs] OK, what if I promise you an exclusive interview with Alex Kiriakis? Shirtless? I guess that can be arranged. Whatever you need. Just don’t run the spoilers. Great. Much appreciated. [phone beeps] Ugh, okay. That was “Daily Confidential.” Now if I can just get these other numerous publications not to run Lady Whistleblower’s leaks. [phone rings] OK, that is going to have to wait until tomorrow. I cannot deal with one more headache today.

I know what you’ve been up to, Stephanie Johnson. I’m here to put a stop to it.

So Leo Stark sure let us have it, huh?

Yeah, I don’t get it. He spends five minutes with Steven Olson, all of a sudden, he’s an expert on the guy?

Could be. I mean, maybe not an expert, but–

But what?

[sighs] Lucas, what if Leo was right about Uncle Steven? What if he is innocent and we just accused the wrong person of stealing great-grandma’s necklace?

[tense music]

Julie. Julie. Are you here? Hello? Anybody here? I’m home. Ju–

Oh, hi.

Who are you? I’m sorry. Do I know you?

I don’t think so. My name is Doug Williams.

[ominous music]

How dare you? My father– my father is Doug Williams. You are not Doug Williams.

[soft orchestration] announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “Days of Our Lives.”

Well, hello to you too, Shawn Douglas.

I’m not in the mood, Philip.

For what?

For you, and for this.

Hey, I’m not looking for trouble, OK? I just wanted to say, I’m sorry about your grandfather. He was a great man.

Yeah, he was. I don’t think I’m ever going to get used to thinking of him in the past tense.

I get it. Some people, you just think they’ll be here forever. I felt the same way about my dad.

Thought you were on the wagon.

Is that any of your business?

Look, I’m sure I’m the last person you’d ever take advice from.

Yeah, you got that right.

But getting hammered isn’t going to make the grief go away.

It’s non-alcoholic.

Oh. Sorry. Just assumed–

You assumed wrong.

Well, I’m glad, for your sake and Belle’s.

[scoffs]

What?

Whether I drink or I don’t drink, it’s not Belle’s problem anymore.

What do you mean? She’s your wife.

Well, not for much longer. We’re getting divorced.

[tense music]

What’s the problem, Xander? You weren’t happy with one of our storylines?

Oh, you think I came all the way over here to discuss your little daytime drama? I am the CEO of a multinational corporation.

OK, so then why are you here? And make it quick, because I’m busy.

Great. I need you to put a stop to this little propaganda machine you’re operating on behalf of my half-witted half-brother Philip, effective immediately.

You know better than to listen to Leo Stark. He’s only sticking up for Steven because they’re two of a kind. They’re both liars and thieves.

Yes, well, I know that Leo is bad news, but–

So is Steven. You heard what Marie said. Hanging out with drug-dealing gangsters on the hunt for stolen diamonds, that’s why he fled Salem.

Yeah, well, that was back in 979. It was a long time ago, OK? And so what. He’s had a fruitful life.

What are you talking about? He’s a criminal. Obviously, he took the necklace.

Yeah, I mean, I guess that makes sense, but I just–

Who else would do something so shady on the day we say goodbye to Doug?

Well? Who are you? What are you doing in my family’s house?

The bedroom’s all made up.

Julie.

Oh. Oh, you’re here. Oh, darling. I thought you weren’t coming and– Bo, did Bo wake up?

He didn’t wake up after all.

I’m sorry.

But he will. Someday, he’s going to wake up, Julie. I’m sorry I didn’t get here sooner. I wanted to get here–

I know. I know. And we’ll keep praying for him. And oh, my god, it’s so good to see you.

What’s going on here? Who is this person? He said his name is Doug Williams.

It is. It is. Darling– darling, this is your father’s grandson. Yeah, your new nephew. [laughs]

[tense music]

[solemn music]

Did it take you by surprise Shawn wanted to end the marriage?

No, no, it didn’t. I mean, it was hard to hear, of course. But the truth is I– I’ve been feeling the same way he does. And I have for a while. What? Does that take you by surprise?

No, no, not really. I guess I was just hoping you could work it out.

Yeah, I was hoping that, too, but–

But what, honey?

It’s just, the feelings that Shawn and I once shared just– they just aren’t there anymore. I mean, I’m always going to love him. He’s the father of my child, and he’s a good man. And even though neither of us have admitted it to ourselves until today, I just think our marriage has been over for a while.

Come on, Shawn. How many times have you and Belle broken up and gotten back together? You always find your way back to each other, right?

Look it’s different this time. It– this time, it feels final.

Well, I’m sorry to hear that.

Yeah, sure you are.

What? Why wouldn’t I be? Look, I have no interest in going after Belle, if that’s what you’re thinking.

So does that mean that things are going well with you and Chloe?

No, things didn’t work out for us either. But I have far more pressing matters to attend to than my love life.

Like what?

Like reclaiming my birthright.

What’s the problem, Xander? You unhappy with one of our storylines?

Oh, don’t play coy with me. It’s obvious you’ve been helping Philip with his public image. Every day, my assistant brings me another puff piece about the poor little rich boy who’s had his birthright stolen by his evil, big, bastard brother.

Are any of those articles untrue?

They are a tad biased, to say the least.

Actually, they’re not. See, whether you like it or not, Xander, Philip has a legitimate claim on Titan Industries given that there is a letter from none other than Victor Kiriakis, as you well know, stating that he wanted the company to go to his son, Philip.

To hell with the letter. My father left me the company in his last will and testament.

So if you’re so sure that your claim on Titan will hold up in court, why are you even worried about me and my PR efforts?

Because we both know that the court of public opinion matters. And it sure feels like you’ve been spinning things in my brother’s favor in that regard. So all I’m saying is maybe it’s time for you to start spinning in another direction.

And what direction would that be?

Mine.

[tense music]

That’s right. I do kind of remember Daddy saying he had a son through IVF.

Yes. Yes. And that man is this boy’s father. [laughs]

OK, I think. Hold on a second. Wait a minute. If your father’s name is Charles LeClair, why are you calling yourself Doug Williams?

Well, my dad said he named me after his biological father. So it was only recently that I decided to change my last name too.

I see.

Isn’t it wonderful? I mean, here we are, grieving your dad. And then, miraculously, his grandson appears.

Sure. Wonderful. Welcome, Dougie.

Thank you. I am very happy to be here among family.

Hey, have you seen Ciara and Shawn?

Well, they had to leave. I almost forgot to tell you. Ciara opened the time capsule.

She did, really?

She did. It was full of these wonderful things that Grandma put together, oh, mementos and family heirlooms and a necklace.

Necklace?

The necklace our mother gave Graham. [chuckles] It’s beautiful. Would you like to see it?

I would. I would love to see it. I’d love to see all the mementos. But later, OK? Right now I just– I just want to see Daddy, OK?

Of course. Of course.

I’m so proud of you for being so strong, for knowing who you are.

Yeah, I’m not feeling all that strong right now.

What are you feeling?

Just very sad. I’ve loved Shawn almost my entire life, since I was a teenager. And you know, even though we’ve had our ups and downs, I just always assumed that we would be together forever. [sniffles]

I know, honey.

Who knew when I went to law school, that I went ended up drawing up my own divorce papers some day?

Wait right here, OK? Don’t move.

What? Where are you going?

I’m– I just got an idea of something that might make you feel a little bit better.

[sniffles]

So you think that this letter that Grandpa Victor wrote trumps what he wrote in his will?

The letter is legit, Shawn.

I’m not saying it isn’t.

No, you’re just saying you believe Xander deserves to keep the company.

Actually, I’m not. I’m glad you’re going after Titan. And for what it’s worth, I hope you get it.

[tense music]

You want me to spin in your direction. What does that even mean?

Well, SJPR once had a very lucrative and mutually beneficial contract with Titan Industries, did it not?

That’s when it was under previous ownership.

So? What’s to stop our two companies from making magic together once more?

So you want me to work for you?

I’d make it worth your while. In fact, whatever my brother is paying you, I’ll double it.

Ah, it had to be tough for Hope to miss her dad’s funeral. But I get why she did. I mean, thinking that her husband was waking up from a coma.

The love of her life. This man is the love of her life. And for years, she thought he was dead. And then to find him and lose him again was– it’s been devastating. Ah, there you are. Someone you must meet. My dear, this is my cousin, Lucas Horton. He is Jennifer’s brother.

I’m Doug.

Hey.

Nice to meet you.

Doug, nice to meet you.

And this is Ciara. You just met her mother, Hope.

Whoa, whoa, wait. Mom was here?

Yeah, she just got here.

Oh, so then Dad…

I’m sorry, my love. He didn’t wake up.

Oh. Yeah, well, I sort of figured it was a long shot, but–

So we have to keep praying for him.

Thank you. Yes, we do. So where did Mom go?

She said she went to go visit our grandfather’s grave.

I’m sorry. Did you say “our grandfather”?

Yes, he did. Darling, this is your grandfather’s grandson and his namesake, Doug Williams.

[intriguing music]

[solemn music]

[sobbing]

Hi, Daddy.

I’m really sorry I didn’t get here sooner.

I know you’re always with me when we’re not together. That’s what you always told me. [sniffles] Only now, I’m never going to be able to hug you again. I already miss you.

You’ll always be in my heart. Always. I love you so much. I love you so, so much.

Oh, Jen.

Hi. Hi.

[sobbing]

I’m so sorry.

Mom, what are you doing in there? Is everything OK?

Gathering reinforcements. What we have here is Dr. Evans’ patented heartbreak cure.

Chocolate chip cookies.

And rocky road ice cream.

[laughs]

OK, my darling, choose your weapon. [laughter] It’s going to get messy. Take one of those too.

OK, good. [laughter]

[twangy Christmas music]

Are you sure I heard you right? ‘Cause I could have sworn you said you’re on my side.

You definitely heard me right. I’m pulling for you, Philip.

Can I ask why?

Look, you and I have never seen eye to eye, but we grew up together. I mean, since we were kids, I watched Grandpa Victor groom you to run Titan. And that company is in your DNA. You deserve to run it.

Thank you for saying that. It means a lot coming from you.

And I think we can both agree that Xander is an untrustworthy menace that’s going to run our family’s reputation into the ground.

Preach.

He’s going to come at you with everything he’s got.

Oh, I know.

And the guy’s got no conscience, so it could get ugly, especially– especially– now that he’s had a taste of the power that comes with being the Kiriakis’ heir.

I’m ready for anything he throws at me. That’s why I’ve brought in a secret weapon.

Yeah, what’s that?

Not what, who. Your cousin Stephanie.

So will you come back to Titan, help me keep what’s legally mine?

Your offer is very tempting. But I’m going to pass.

I’m sorry. What?

I made a commitment to Philip, and I intend to see it through.

I see. And is that all there is to it?

What else would there be?

Well, given your history with Philip, maybe you’re standing beside him now because you want to get back into his bed.

[tense music]

Mm.

[solemn music]

Just think about how happy your dad would have been seeing the whole family together.

He would have, yeah. Julie must have been happy to have Steven here.

Yes, she was.

You know, I don’t think I’ve seen him since–

Yeah. No.

Since I was a little girl. How is my half-brother?

Steven is good.

Good. I’m glad to hear it. I know he’s had his challenges.

I’m so sorry about Bo. I know that you were really wanting to believe that he was coming around, Hope.

I was so torn. I desperately wanted to be here for Julie and my dad, but I was so terrified, if I’d left and Bo woke up and I wasn’t there–

No, no, everybody understood. You needed to be with your husband. You made the right decision. And you’re here now. That’s what’s important. And if anyone would have understood the length that you would go to for the love of your life, your sweet dad would. I mean, think about how many times he moved heaven and Earth for Julie.

Wow, it’s just wild to think that Grandpa Doug had a grandson that we knew nothing about. Sorry, I don’t mean to speak about you like you’re not here.

It’s OK. I totally get it.

Does Shawn know yet?

Well, not yet.

I’m sorry, who’s Shawn?

Shawn Douglas Brady. He is Ciara’s brother.

Named after Doug.

Just like you.

Pretty overwhelming, isn’t it? Got a lot of new family members to keep track of, don’t you?

Yeah, it’s definitely a lot. I feel like I should be keeping a chart or something.

Nah, you’ll be all right. You’ll get used to it. I was about your age when I found out I was a part of the family, so you’re good. I can’t imagine my life without them now.

Yeah, speaking of family, I wanted to show your mother the contents of the time capsule that you found, all those wonderful things and the beautiful necklace.

Oh.

But she wanted to leave and spend some time with Doug.

Of course.

Julie, there’s something that we have to tell you.

I’m so sorry to interrupt. But by any chance, is there something to eat? I haven’t eaten all day.

Oh, my, you’re starving. You must be. I’m so sorry. Please excuse my bad manners.

It’s OK. I can check in the fridge. I can–

No, no, we’ve got plenty of food. I’ll heat something up for you, dear. I’ll be right back.

Sounds great. Thank you.

Mm.

So you were about to tell Julie about the missing necklace, right?

Uh, yeah, how do you know about that?

Well, I know that it’s none of my business, but your sister and your Aunt Marie said that it would be best if Julie didn’t find out just yet.

Jennifer and Aunt Marie were talking about it?

They were, yeah. You know, they have some concerns about Julie’s state of mind, you know, because she’s grieving. So they thought it would be better not to put all that on her right now.

Hmm.

Yeah, and you know what, Lucas? I think that they’re right. I think it would be devastating for Grandma Julie to find out that her brother stole from the family on the same day we buried Grandpa.

[tense music]

That is beyond insulting. You think that I’m choosing Philip because I want to sleep with him?

Well, if one were a conspiracy theorist, one might suggest that you’re aiming even higher than his bedroom.

What the hell does that mean?

You two were engaged once, right? I mean, I could hardly hold it against you for wanting to seal the deal this time, knowing that you could be the next queen of Titan Industries.

First of all, none of that interests me at all. And not that it’s any of your damn business, but my relationship with Philip is strictly professional.

Like your relationship with my cousin Alex.

OK, my dad taught me how to deal with misogynistic windbags like you.

I wasn’t judging, Stephanie.

Get the hell out of here while you’re still in possession of your reproductive organs.

Fine. I’ll leave. But you should be very careful when it comes to my brother. Philip will use you to get whatever he wants. And when he’s done, he’ll toss you aside like yesterday’s rubbish.

[scoffs]

Have a nice night.

So far, Stephanie has done a masterful job of putting my claim to Titan front and center.

Still, you’re going to need more than good press to gain control of Titan.

I know. This is just step one. But after all the crap I pulled with Brady, it was important to let the public know I’m of sound mind and more than capable of running the company.

OK, are you a little bit worried, though, you know, that things might get a little messy with you and Steph working so closely?

We agreed to keep our relationship strictly professional.

Oh, where have I heard that one before? [phone beeps]

Everything OK?

It’s Ciara. My mom’s in town.

That’s great.

Yeah, yeah. Look, I should go.

Give Ciara and Hope my best.

Yeah, I will.

Oh, and, Shawn, I truly am sorry about you and Belle.

Thanks, but it’s for the best. It’s time to see who we are as separate people, leading separate lives.

Mmm-mmm. Should I get some more ice cream?

No, I think I’m good. But it was a good idea, and I do feel better.

I’m so glad. Well, what should we do now? What about a movie?

Sure.

OK. What are you thinking? Something– what about “Love Actually” in honor of Doug?

Yes, that sounds like a good plan.

I think I’ve seen it on the directory.

These are unreal.

[chuckles] Grandma Alice Horton’s secret recipe.

And just wait until you try my cousin JJ’s twist on them. They have one very special ingredient, right, Grandma Julie?

Ciara.

Did I miss something?

Oh.

You’ll get used to it. There’s a lot about this family you don’t know. [phone beeps]

Mm-hmm. Oh. Oh.

Whoa, whoa. Hey.

I have got to go.

What is it?

Shawn just texted me back, and we have a little errand to run.

Everything all right?

Everything’s fine. I’ll be back soon.

OK, OK.

I love you.

I love you too.

Mwah! Doug, it was so nice to meet you.

You too.

Welcome to the family.

[tense music]

Well, I just met Doug Williams.

Yes, the grandson that your dad never knew he had and just showed up right after the funeral. It’s unbelievable.

Yeah, that’s one word for it.

Uh-oh.

What?

I know that look.

What? What look?

What– once a detective, always a detective.

Cuz–

What are you thinking?

I– I don’t trust him. I don’t know. There’s just something I don’t trust. I mean, has anyone even checked out this guy’s story, or how about called my half-brother, Charles, to see if he even, in fact, has a son named after my dad?

I don’t know. I mean, I don’t know for sure. There’s been so much going on, obviously. But you don’t trust him?

Something just doesn’t sit right with me about this whole thing.

You know what? I get it. I felt the same way about that woman that Chad and Jack found in Missouri.

The one claiming to be Abigail.

Yeah. I knew in my gut that it was wrong.

Oh, cuz. Unfortunately, your gut proved you right. I’m so sorry.

But– so you think that Doug is lying about his identity?

Well, I, you know– well, let’s just say that it’d be great if someone was keeping an eye on him after I fly back to Europe to be with Bo.

And by someone, you mean–

My world-renowned investigative journalist cousin, of course. Oh, gosh, it’s so good to see you. I– come here. I’ve missed you.

I’ve missed you.

Missed you so much, cousin. [laughs, sniffles] So what do you say? Are you up for it?

Mm-hmm, I say that you can always count on me. Always, always. Oh, I got to go.

OK.

I got to go. I’m so sorry. Let me give you a ride back to the house.

No, no, no. I want to stay here. I want to– I want to stay a little longer. Thank you, though.

I hate to leave you. I love you.

I love you, cuz.

OK.

[solemn music]

[music intensifies]

[knocks] Burning the midnight oil, I see.

Something like that.

You OK? You seem a little tense.

Maybe that’s because your delightful brother just darkened my doorstep.

Xander? The hell did he want?

Hmm. [clears throat] Let’s see. First, he ordered me to stop generating positive press for you.

Seriously?

Then he tried to get me to drop you as a client and come and work for him.

No way.

Way. He even offered to double what you’re paying me.

Son of a– what’d you tell him?

I turned him down flat, of course.

[exhales] I can’t tell you how happy that makes me. But I’m sure you were tempted. That’s a lot of money.

There isn’t enough gold in Fort Knox to make me work for that guy. I honestly don’t know how Sarah puts up with him.

What did he say to you that got you so mad?

Oh, it doesn’t matter.

Might make you feel better to talk about it.

OK. When I told him that I was loyal to you, he basically accused me of being a gold digger who sleeps with every guy that I work with.

What a total jackass.

Yes. But actually, you should be thanking him.

For what?

Well, after Xander’s little visit, I’m more determined than ever to help you take control of your father’s company.

Yes! I like this fire!

Oh, I am very fired up to win this, believe me, if for no other reason than to wipe that condescending grin off your brother’s stupid face.

[dramatic music]

OK, ready?

Oh, you know what? I spoke with Shane earlier. He was going to try to put me in touch with your dad. I’d like to check back with him. Good?

Yeah, OK.

Be right back.

Take your time.

[gentle music]

[phone beeps]

Hey, Claire-Bear. Yes, your great-Grandpa Doug’s memorial service was absolutely beautiful. Just a fitting tribute for an amazing man. Everybody asked about you. Yes, you are definitely missed. Listen, sweetie, I wanted to talk to you about something. It’s about your dad and me.

[solemn music]

I’m so proud to be your daughter. I always have been. Thank you, Daddy, for everything, for all that you gave me– you gave our family. You were selfless always, always putting your family first.

You know, whenever I was feeling worried and alone, I– I’d close my eyes and I’d see your beautiful smile. And I’d imagine you– I’d imagine you holding my hand, telling me that everything is going to be all right.

I wish to god I could hold your hand right now.

What if we hold your hands?

Shawn. Ciara.

Mom.

[whispers] I love you.

I love you, sweetheart.

Oh, Mama. Grandma told us about Daddy.

We’re sorry, Mom.

He’s going to wake up.

Mm-hmm.

Your father is going to wake up. You’re not losing hope, are you?

No, of course not.

Did you have a chance to talk to Belle?

Yeah, yeah, I did. I’ll fill you in on that later.

Mama, I know how hard it must have been for you to leave Daddy’s bedside.

Very. Today is about your grandpa…

my dad, my sweet…

He really loved you both so much. And I know that you’re always going to keep him in your hearts.

Of course, we are.

Always.

Come here. My gosh, I love you guys so much.

We love you.

Wait, so you actually got high on pot-laced donuts?

Well, it was an uplifting experience. Of course, I had no idea that the secret ingredient was THC.

Mm-hmm, that’s her story. And she’s sticking to it.

It’s the truth.

[laughs] Yeah.

And I always thought that Jennifer Rose should have grounded her son for that little stunt.

I agree.

I just heard my middle name.

Aha.

Oh, am I in trouble?

Mm-hmm, your brother and Julie were just filling me in on some of the important family lore.

Mm-hmm, there’s plenty of that.

What is all this?

Oh, our usual late-night snack, sliders with donuts.

What better way to welcome Doug in the family, an official welcome? Grandma’s donuts and sliders. Come on.

Just met Doug Williams.

Yes, the grandson that your dad never knew he had and just showed up right after the funeral. It’s unbelievable.

Yeah, that’s one word for it.

Uh-oh.

What?

I know that look.

What? What look?

What– once a detective, always a detective.

I– I don’t trust him. I don’t know. There’s just something I don’t trust. I mean, has anyone even checked out this guy’s story? Or how about called my half-brother, Charles, to see if he even, in fact, has a son named after my dad?

I don’t know. I mean, I don’t know for sure. There’s been so much going on, obviously. But you don’t trust him?

Something just doesn’t sit right with me about this whole thing.

Here, Grandma’s donuts. There’s only a few left. Have one.

Yeah, sure. Why not?

Recap written by Michele and Cheryl

Liz reunited with Maggie at the town square. She told her that Marie wasn’t happy to see her. Liz said that she didn’t hold a grudge against Marie for what happened with Neil. Marie still held a grudge because she shot her. In her defense, Liz thought she was an intruder. Marie reminded her that she was the intruder because she was sleeping with her husband in her bed. Maggie wanted them to stop talking about the past. Ciara opened the time capsule in front of Shawn, Lucas and Jennifer. The group went through the time capsule and saw mementos from their past. Julie walked in the room after reuniting with Steven. She introduced him as her younger brother. Julie was happy the time capsule was opened. She found Alice’s diamond necklace in the time capsule. Alice didn’t wear it. Julie wondered what happened to the necklace and wanted to go through the time capsule. It was time to say goodbye to Doug. Everyone started to leave for the service, but Steven stayed behind. He stared at the necklace. Marlena found Belle crying. Belle realized that she should have let Shawn know she was going to be there for Doug’s service. Marlena believed he would be happy to see her. Maggie advised Liz and Marie to let go of their anger. The women shook hands for Doug’s sake.

Marlena and Belle arrived for the service. She introduced Belle and thought it was nice to see Liz and Marie getting along. Liz informed her that they weren’t exactly getting along. Shawn ran into Belle at the service and assured her that it was okay that she was there. Julie thanked everyone for showing up. She looked at Doug’s picture and took a deep breath before the priest started the ceremony. Shawn read a scripture. Ciara read one of Doug’s favorite poems. Julie read the eulogy for the service. She talked about his life and choked up during her speech. Everyone became emotional as she continued talking about Doug. Liz got up to express how she felt about Doug. She wouldn’t have a career if it weren’t for Doug. Everyone sang “Always” as a tribute to Doug. There were flashbacks of Doug and Julie. The rest of the mourners paid their respects to Doug before leaving Julie alone. She took one last opportunity to say goodbye to Doug before walking away. Belle and Marlena went back to the townhouse. Belle wanted to give Shawn time with his family. Marlena reminded her that she was his family too and that he loved her. She left to find out more information from Shane about John so he could tell him about Doug dying. Shawn arrived at the townhouse. Abe, Paulina, Eli and Lani had a drink in Doug’s honor. The Bradys also honored Doug by having drinks at the pub. Marie, Lucas, Ciara and Jennifer went back to the Horton house. While they were at the house, Marie wondered about the time capsule. Ciara opened the time capsule to show her the necklace, but it was gone. Steven sat next to Tom and Alice’s plaque at the town square. He didn’t realize that his grandmother had so much treasure. Back in the day, he would have been tempted to take the necklace. He assured her that he changed. Julie sat at Doug’s gravesite. She started crying and wondering what she would do now. A man arrived at the gravesite and announced himself as Doug Williams.

Recap written by Michele and Cheryl

There was a flashback of Doug in prison planning to go back to Salem when he got out of prison. Liz went to see Marlena. They talked about old times. While they were talking, Liz brought up her rivalry with Marie. Marlena said that was a long time ago. Liz said the day was about Doug and brought up how he helped her singing career. There was a flashback of Liz and Doug. Later on, Marlena had flashbacks of Doug and Julie helping her on her wedding day. When Belle showed up, Marlena told her John was called away on a mission. She asked Belle how Shawn was. Belle said she didn’t know because she was giving him space by working for DiMera in Hong Kong. She said she wanted to be there to support him even though he didn’t know she was there. Since they haven’t spoken to each other much, she doesn’t know where things stood with them. While Jennifer was looking at family pictures, Lucas showed up. Jennifer said Julie would be happy to see him. She said she couldn’t imagine how Julie would feel with Doug not being there. They talked about Doug and how he welcomed Lucas into the family. While they were talking, Ciara and Shawn showed up. Jennifer wondered if Hope was coming to which Shawn said she wasn’t. Shawn said Hope was with Bo. He said Bo squeezed her hand when she told him about Doug. They were hopeful that it meant Bo was waking up. Jennifer said Julie would understand why Hope couldn’t leave Bo. When Ciara showed pictures of the kids, Shawn noticed a box on the table. Lucas said it was a time capsule that was found when the house caught on fire. He said no one has been able to open it. Ciara got the box open.

When Julie was in bed, she reached out to Doug and noticed he wasn’t there. She had flashbacks of her and Doug when they were younger. When she heard a noise outside, it turned out to be her brother. Julie was happy to see him, but was upset with him for not staying in touch. He said he had to be there for her and talked about how Doug helped him when he was in trouble. She said she hoped he wasn’t there because he was in trouble because her grandson worked for the FBI. Julie told him about Eli and Lani and they reminisced about old times. He apologized for how he treated her and said he wasn’t the same person he was. Lani talked to Eli about Doug’s past. She was shocked to find out that Doug was in prison with Bill and that he was involved with Julie and her mother. While they were talking, they talked about Steven. Maggie ran into Marie in the town square and talked about Doug. They talked about what happened in the past which led to them talking about Marie’s rivalry with Liz. Marie said it was a long time ago, but she would be okay if she never saw Liz again. Everyone showed up for Doug’s funeral. They talked about Doug. There was a flashback of Doug and Bill in jail.

Transcript provided by Suzanne

THIS STILL NEEDS EXTENSIVE EDITING!

So, Jennifer, you were telling me about this time capsule you were able to open?

Well, thanks to Ciara. [laughter]

And just wait till you see this diamond necklace that’s been hiding away for over 60 years.

Yep. Belonged to Grandma Alice.

Um, I could have sworn that Grandma Julie put it back in here.

She did. I saw her put it in there right before we left for the service.

Yeah, well, it’s not in here. Where could it have gone?

[tense music]

Well, it better turn up soon. I mean, that necklace was priceless.

I mean, not for the– just for the diamonds, but the great sentimental value.

I don’t get it. I mean, if you’re saying that somebody broke into the house and stole it, I mean, I think we would have noticed that.

Well, maybe not.

What? What do you mean?

Well, just saying, maybe whoever took it, maybe they didn’t need to break in.

Oh, Grandma. Who knew the treasure you were hiding in that house? The old me would have been tempted mightily by that diamond necklace. But I’m a changed man.

And to quote the magnificent Dolly Parton, whom I do unabashedly worship, don’t like the road you’re strolling down, start paving another one.

[playful music]

Shawn.

I know. I should have called first. Is it OK that I stopped by?

Of course.

I mean, we didn’t really get much of a chance to talk at my grandfather’s memorial.

Yeah, no, we didn’t. Come in, please.

You seemed a little surprised to see me when you opened the door.

Well– [laughs] Probably not as surprised as you were to see me at your grandfather’s memorial. I know you said I didn’t need to come, but Claire got sick and couldn’t make it. And, well, I wanted you to feel supported by your family. But if I overstepped, I–

No, no, no. You didn’t. I’m glad you came.

[soft music]

Oh, my love.

My darling.

All I ever wanted was to be your wife.

What do I do now?

[crying] [rustling] Hello? Someone there?

Sorry to disturb you.

Who are you?

I’m Doug Williams.

[tense music]

Doug Williams?

That’s right.

No. No, no, no. Doug Williams is deceased.

I know that. But as you can see, I’m very much alive.

[dramatic music]

[soft orchestration] announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “Days of Our Lives.”

I don’t know what your story is, but this is Doug Williams’ grave. I am his wife, and he was my beloved husband.

Oh, I know all that. I also know that you two were crazy about each other since he got out of jail and came to Salem. And for me, that day was today.

[soft music]

What is all this?

I got out of jail today myself, just in time to come to Salem, to see you.

That doesn’t make any sense, Lucas. If somebody didn’t have to break in, we would have seen them steal it, right?

Well, I mean, not necessarily. It’s not like we were all in close proximity to the necklace at every moment.

Well, that’s true. Oh, maybe Julie just put it somewhere for safekeeping.

I don’t know. I think she put it back in the box right next to the deed.

Yeah, she did. And we were all here when she found it. It was after she went upstairs to get dressed before the funeral.

Yeah, with Steven.

[dramatic music]

Forgive me for eavesdropping on your private conversation with a plaque, but I must confess, I used to make my living overhearing things I wasn’t meant to hear, and then writing about them in my very popular gossip column. But rest assured, those days are behind me. Whatever it is you said to– Grandma and Grandpa, was it– goes no further than the Horton Town Square.

That’s good to hear. And who are you?

Leo Stark. And you are?

I’m Steven Olson.

Nice to meet you, Steven.

And I will confess that I could really use one of those right about now.

Well, it’s still Happy Hour if you care to join me. Two for one.

Sure. Why not?

Thank you.

It was a beautiful ceremony for your grandfather.

Yeah. Yeah, it was.

So many people came to pay their respects from far and wide. [laughs]

Belle, thank you. Thank you for coming all this way.

Of course. I wanted to be there for you and show my support. And you know how much I love your grandfather and Julie.

Yeah, well, uh, my grandfather, he thought the world of you.

[soft music] As does Julie.

And, um, since you and I are finally in the same place at the same time, I think that, um– I think we need to talk about our marriage.

Yeah, my mom was actually asking how you were, how we were doing.

And what did you tell her?

Uh, just that we hadn’t seen each other in a while until today, that we’d spoken briefly on the phone. That it’s been a strange year.

Yeah. Yeah. I mean, it has. You know, with my going to rehab and focusing– focusing on my recovery, I mean, I think it’s obvious that I haven’t had much time or energy to, uh– you know, to work on us. You know, and our relationship.

Well, I am just so glad that you are getting the help you needed. And listen, I totally understood that you were under a tremendous amount of stress keeping up with your sobriety and worrying about your dad and trying to take care of your mom while she takes care of him. And, Shawn, that’s why I just thought it would be helpful to give you your space. That’s why I went to stay with Claire, and that’s why I went to Hong Kong to do all this consulting work for DiMera. It was just to give you space.

Listen, I know. I know that’s why.

But, yes, all this time apart and– and the space between us has obviously prevented us from confronting our issues. So I do think that what we need to do now is–

Is make a decision.

[soft music]

So since you’re obviously a part of the Horton clan, given that those two legends are your grandparents, I assume you’re in Salem for Doug Williams’ funeral.

I am. I’m here for my sister, Julie.

Oh. Your sister is an absolutely lovely woman. Not very fond of me, but I have put my foot in it in her presence a few too many times, so I get it. And she’s in good company since most people in Salem don’t think very highly of me.

I’m sorry to hear that, Leo.

It’s fine. In fact, if people did start to like me, I think I would feel all sorts of pressure to live up to their high opinions, which would then cause terrible anxiety for me because I have very low self-esteem and a tendency to self-sabotage, according to my therapist.

Right. Well, I’m sorry to hear that too. But even in the little time I’ve known you, I’ve found you to be very personable and charming. And I’m impressed by your self-awareness.

[laughs] Well, thank you, Steven. I find you to be very personable and charming as well, and I already consider you a friend because I’m a little desperate in that regard, so I hope that’s OK.

That is definitely OK. And hey, I’m a little desperate in that regard too, so it’s good to have a new friend.

Especially in this town. Slim pickings. [laughs] So how long has it been since you stepped foot in our lovely burg?

Oh, it’s been many a moon.

And what caused you to abandon such a culturally rich city with fantastic weather except for when it’s windy and freezing, which is only about 0 months out of the year?

My leaving had nothing to do with the weather, good or bad. I actually had to leave Salem.

Ooh, the plot thickens. The former gossip columnist and congenitally nosy me would love to know why, if you don’t mind sharing.

Sure, I’ll share. I see that you’re not– you’re not the judgmental type.

Oh, no, not at all. Although I’m quite good at distinguishing between very menschy, interesting people such as yourself and swinish and/or very boring people, such as those who shall remain nameless for the time being. But unless you told me you were the reincarnation of Ivan the Terrible, who, as a child used, to take small animals and throw them off of tall buildings, I assure you, I would not judge.

I’m glad to hear that. And in that case, I– [sighs] I ended up having to abandon this culturally rich city because I was involved in some fairly shady dealings. I did a lot of things I shouldn’t have.

Such as?

Well, one of my petty crimes was skimming tips when I worked at my sister and brother-in-law’s coffee shop. But then later, my sister opened an antique shop, and I used to store questionable merchandise there, which resulted in her inadvertently selling canes that were, um, filled with cocaine.

[laughs] Canes filled with cocaine?

Yes.

So they were coke-canes?

Ah.

[laughs]

Very clever. Very clever.

Thank you.

And I might as well tell you, since I find it, well, rather cleansing to open up about my past mistakes, I was also involved in the fencing of stolen jewels.

I see. Well, under the heading of it being cleansing to open up about past mistakes, I, too, have dabbled in jewel theft. I once helped myself to a dead woman’s jewelry, which at the time I didn’t feel all that guilty about because what is a ghost going to do with a bracelet, right? And then there was this emerald–

Well, in my case, it was diamonds. You see, this woman named Trish Clayton lifted them from a drug smuggler by the name of Durand, and I found myself caught in the middle.

Oh, I hate when that happens.

[laughs] But I’m not proud of any of it. In fact, I’m deeply ashamed of the man I was at that time, how I lived my life. But I’ve put all of that sordid behavior behind me. My life of crime is a thing of the past.

You don’t actually think Uncle Steven took the necklace, do you?

Well, it wouldn’t be much of a shock if he did. [sighs] When Steven left town all those years ago, it was because he was mixed up with stolen diamonds.

What? You’re kidding me, right?

No, I wish I were. Check with Julie. She’ll fill you in.

[sighs] But still, I can’t imagine that Steven would commit a crime against his own sister after she just lost her husband.

Well, you know, I can imagine after what Aunt Marie just told us about him. Yeah, I think we should find that joker and question him or something.

OK. Well, I’ll go with you.

You will?

Yeah, just where– where would we even find him?

Well, he did say he was going to go see Grandma and Grandpa’s plaque.

Yeah?

Yeah.

All right, we’ll start there.

All right.

Thanks.

[tense music]

Well, this is shaping up to be quite the family reunion.

Yeah, that it is.

You just got out of jail, came to Salem to see me.

That’s right.

Next, you’re going to tell me that your cell mate was Bill Horton?

His last name wasn’t Horton, but his name was Bill.

And your name is Doug Williams.

It is, yeah. Well, not exactly.

You woke up this morning and just decided you were going to take my late husband’s name?

No, I– I just meant that it wasn’t the name that I was born with. I changed it. I was born Douglas LeClair. I was named after my father.

[soft music]

You’re Douglas LeClaire’s son?

Yes. Well, his dad. My grandpa, Robert, he actually changed his name to Charles when he was just a baby, but he was originally Douglas when he was born, though they used to call him Dougie. Anyway, he told me the story of his life, how Robert wasn’t his biological father, that he was conceived through artificial insemination. His birth mother, having been a woman named Rebecca North, and his real father was–

Doug. My Doug.

Yeah. Which makes me–

Doug’s grandson.

His grandson.

Oh! [gasps]

I just think that Lucas may be jumping to conclusions. I know that Steven made some bad choices in his past, but–

Oh, honey, it was more than just bad choices. Steven has a history with stolen diamonds, and I’m afraid history is beginning to repeat itself.

[tense music]

Yeah, it looks like it’s time for another round.

Oh, you don’t have to twist my arm.

Hey, what do you say we switch it up? This caipirinha sounds good.

No. No, no, no. You don’t want that one.

No? Do they not know how to make a good one here?

Oh, it’s not that. It’s just that particular cocktail reminds me of this man that I was seeing for about two seconds before it all went south.

Ah. And this man broke your heart.

Well, it was more that I insulted him, and then he broke my heart by not forgiving me. But I kind of understand because I accused him of doing something he most likely didn’t do.

I hate when that happens.

OK, Steven, where the hell are the diamonds, huh?

[dramatic music]

Last year, we started having problems because of your guilt over your dad and you blaming yourself over him being in a coma.

Actually, there’s– there’s a little bit of news on that front. After my mom heard about my Grandpa Doug, she went to go visit my dad in the hospital, and, um, he squeezed her hand.

What? Oh my God. Shawn, that’s amazing. So do the doctors think this means he’s waking up?

They– they said they don’t know. They’re not sure. But my mom is very hopeful. It’s the reason why she didn’t come to my grandpa’s funeral. She wanted to make sure that she was right there by his side.

That is totally understandable. Oh my God. Shawn, I pray this means your dad is finally waking up. And if he does, does this mean that you’ll finally be able to let go of all that guilt?

[soft music]

Look, if my father is waking up, and we do get some sort of a miracle that brings him back to us, I mean, there’s no telling what kind of condition that he’s going to be in. And, listen, we don’t even know if he’s going to fully recover.

So you’ll still find a way to hold onto all that guilt.

Listen, I’m working on that in therapy. All right, I’m trying to come to grips with what happened and just accept the fact that, yeah, yeah, I made a mistake. I made a terrible mistake, but– but I can’t keep beating myself up over it.

Of course not.

And therapy, it, um–

[soft music] Therapy also taught me that I’ve changed.

In what way? What do you mean?

I mean that if I can’t get past this guilt–

I just– I don’t think that I’m ever going to be able to be the man that I was, like the man that you fell in love with. So– so what I’m saying is that–

I’m saying that I think that maybe– maybe it’s time that we end our marriage.

Diamonds? What diamonds? What are you talking about?

Don’t even start with that. I’m talking about my grandmother’s necklace from the time capsule, the one that’s now missing.

And you think I stole it?

We don’t know what to think, but you were there when we found it, and now it’s gone.

And so you jump to the conclusion that I just, what? Stuffed it into my pocket while no one was noticing and ran off with it?

You know, we jumped to that conclusion because we know your history. Aunt Marie told us all about your track record with diamonds. And now you’re here, what? With this guy? Give me a break.

This guy? The name is Leo.

Is he helping you? Huh? Is he helping you fence it? Is that what he’s doing?

I have no idea what you’re talking about.

Drop the innocent act. You know your pal here? Your pal, your pal stole your– your cousin Abigail’s jewelry, and then he tried to get her murderer to sell it for him.

That was a coincidence. I had nothing to do with Abigail’s murder, and I didn’t even know the two of you were related. My God, is everyone in this town cousins?

I don’t even know this guy. He invited me to sit down for a drink because they’re having two for one, OK?

Enough, OK? Enough! We know that you have the necklace. So just save us all a bunch of time and be a man and admit it.

[dramatic music]

I know Steven got into a lot of trouble way back when he lived in Salem, but that was a long time ago. Julie said he’s a changed man.

Oh, honey, Julie has always tried to believe the best about her brother, and I don’t blame her. But it’s my experience that a leopard doesn’t change its spots.

Yeah. Well, if that’s the case, then I really hate to think how heartbroken Julie’s going to be when she finds out the truth.

[soft music]

[gasps] I can’t believe it. You’re Doug’s grandson, and you’re here.

I wanted to pay my respects to my grandfather. Like I said, I just recently found out about him. But I’m sorry that I didn’t get the chance to meet him.

Oh, so am I. So am I.

But I’m glad to meet you, Ms. Williams.

[laughs] I think under the circumstances, you may call me Julie.

Julie. OK.

And you just got out of– jail?

I’m afraid that, uh, I got in some trouble on the way to Salem. But I managed to make my way here.

Well, bless you for making your way here.

Are you tired after all that travel?

[laughs] I’m pretty beat up. I could use a little time to rest. Do you know of any cheap hotels around?

Cheap hotels? [laughs] No. No. You’re family. You’re my family. You’re coming home with me.

OK. Thank you.

Did Ciara and Lucas manage to find Steven?

Uh, no, because neither one of them is answering their phones. I don’t know. Julie. You’re back!

I am.

Hi.

Hi.

And you brought a friend.

Oh, Jennifer, Aunt Marie, this is more than just a friend. Meet Doug Williams.

Julie, I know today has been a very rough day for you.

Oh, Marie. Aunt Marie, no, no. I understand. This is not my Doug. No. This is Doug’s grandson.

Grandson?

But how?

He is the son of Douglas LeClaire. You remember. Little Dougie!

Oh, of course I do. But Robert changed his name to Charles. This is before your time.

You know, I have heard this story, actually. So it is so nice that you’re here after all this time.

Yes, he came back to pay respects to his grandfather, and he’s going to stay with us a while. Isn’t this a miracle? It’s the second one today. First, it was Ciara opening that time capsule.

Time capsule?

Yes. Yes. My grandmother, Alice Horton, put together a time– dear, this was decades before you were even born. She put together a time capsule full of wonderful, wonderful things. We just found it recently. Uh, where is it? I want to show him all the family treasures.

We just– we just– we put it away for now for safekeeping.

[soft music]

I’m not admitting to stealing anything. You got that? First of all, I didn’t take the damn necklace. And second, it belonged to my grandmother. I have as much right to it as any of you, if not more.

You want to tell your sister that, or Aunt Marie? Cough it up, Steven. Come on. Let’s have it.

I’m leaving.

Oh, you’re leaving. Well, you know what? Let’s search him. Obviously, he took the necklace. Come on.

No, here’s what’s obvious. You’re an idiot if you think you can get away with assaulting me in a public place. Leo, I’m really sorry that that guy broke your heart. Hey, but if you’re interested in getting back out there, my son happens to be gay. His name is Spencer Olson, and he’s very personable and charming as well. So, uh, look him up.

[tense music]

You know, even though I’ve had that same thought, just hearing you say that out loud was–

I’m sorry.

[soft music] Look, Belle, you are– you’re a great person. And you– you are the best person that I know. I don’t– I just– I don’t deserve you.

That is not true, Shawn.

But that’s how I feel.

Look, Belle, so much has happened. I mean, after my dad went into his coma– there’s– there’s Talia. And then– then everything that happened before this. It’s– with Jan and– and EJ.

For a better part of the past year, you and I have been apart, and I’m not– I’m not talking about just physically.

And the closeness that you and I once shared… and the trust, Belle, the trust that we once had…

We haven’t had that in so long.

And you don’t think that we can get that back?

I mean, do you?

I know that I still love you.

And I still love you too.

And we will always be connected through Claire.

So I’m saying I just– I think that it’s time that maybe we just let go.

Well, uh, I guess there’s no reason to make this any harder than it needs to be. I can draw up some simple divorce papers and send them over for you. But you should have a lawyer look at them.

Yeah. I will. I, uh– I should– I should probably get going.

And you’ll let me know about your dad?

Yeah. Yeah, of course I will.

OK. Shawn?

[soft music] You take care of yourself, OK?

I will.

And you need to get settled in. I’ll just go make up the guest room.

I’ll help you with that.

Oh, no need. No need. I’m an expert at housekeeping. [laughs]

Julie, unfortunately, I have a plane to catch. I can’t stay.

So soon?

Yeah.

Oh.

It was wonderful to see you, dear.

Oh, wonderful having you here. You must do it again, please.

I promise. I promise.

And we’ll text and we’ll do those video chats so people can keep connected to each other.

Thank you, honey.

Safe flight. I love you.

Thank you, dear.

I’ll be right back.

All right. So there was really a time capsule hidden in this house? That’s something you don’t hear every day.

No, uh, definitely not. And we– we would show it to you, but–

There was a very valuable necklace in it, and unfortunately, it’s gone missing.

Oh, no.

And we cannot tell Julie because she would be so upset. I mean, that necklace belonged to her grandmother. It was– it was given to her by Julie’s mother. And if she finds out that it’s gone–

We’re hoping to get it back before she misses it.

Did Steven say anything at all to you about the necklace?

Would you give it a rest? I don’t know anything about any necklace. And did it occur to either of you that that man might be innocent? I mean, poor guy shows up to support his sister, and you’re treating him like he’s a common criminal.

Well, why does it matter to you? According to him, you just met him.

We had an instant connection because he is, as I told him, a very menschy and charming guy. Not to mention–

Ah.

–I know what it’s like to be accused of a crime you didn’t commit. Or have you both forgotten that there was a time everybody was so sure that I stabbed Sonny Kiriakis and murdered Abigail? Well, I was innocent of both crimes I was falsely accused of. Maybe Steven is too. Besides, as if the two of you have any business judging anybody.

[scoffs] And what is that supposed to mean?

You’re kidding, right? You kidnapped your own wife. You are married to a convicted serial killer. So if I were you, I would consider putting that glass house on the market before you throw any stones.

[scoffs]

[tense music]

Again with the window? Can’t you come through a door?

[sighs] I didn’t want to make a big scene, but it’s time for me to leave again.

Oh, no, no. You’re not leaving this time. I have had the most wonderful surprise, the most wonderful story to tell–

Why don’t you save it for next time?

You’re really going now? You’re really determined to go now?

I have to go, yes. Much as I’ve loved being with you, sis, still as kind and sweet and beautiful as ever.

Oh, flattery. Flattery. Thanks. You’re abandoning me again.

Don’t look at it like that. I’ll be back.

When? Another 50 years?

Much sooner than that, I promise. And I want to say again how sorry I am about Doug. A great man.

Yes, he was. And to tell you the truth, he always wanted to know how Steven’s doing.

Well, now you know.

[soft music]

I know you went to India. I know you went to an ashram and had an epiphany and became a changed man.

A work in progress, anyway.

Aren’t we all?

I love you, Jules. You take good care of your precious self.

I’ll try. I love you so. So I guess godspeed.

And, sis, don’t believe everything you hear about me.

What do you mean?

I’ll be in touch.

[soft music]

You know, I’d better call a cab or I’m going to miss my plane.

You are not taking a cab. I will take you to the airport, and we’ll get more time together.

You’re kidding. Thank you!

You’re welcome.

Well, goodbye, Doug. Nice to meet you.

It was nice to meet you, Marie.

Aunt Marie to you.

Aunt Marie. [laughs]

And I’ll see you later, Doug.

Yes, you definitely will.

OK. Excuse me.

[soft music]

Julie tells him the same and that all he has to do is ask. Julie thanks him again for being there, saying it means a lot.

In the town square, Marie remarks that she would count herself lucky if she never laid eyes on Liz Chandler again. Liz then approaches and guesses today is not her lucky day. Liz tells Maggie it’s good to see her but gathers Marie is not that delighted to see her which she confirms. Liz remarks that she thought the world of Marie’s parents, but couldn’t stand her.

Julie tells Steven that she’s glad he climbed through the window on his way to the memorial service. Julie talks about being so excited to take him downstairs and introduce him to his family.

Ciara opens Alice’s time capsule which shocks Jennifer, Lucas, and Shawn as they prepare to see what’s inside.

Liz mocks Marie holding a grudge over Neil after all these years. Marie mocks that Liz isn’t going to shoot her again in another jealous rage. Liz argues that was decades ago and that she knows damn well that it was an accident. Marie complains that Liz slept with her husband in their bed and when she came home, she shot her. Liz brings up that she went to prison over it until Maggie shouts that’s enough.

Belle sits with Marlena at home and gets emotional after listening to Liz Chandler’s song “Friends and Lovers”. Marlena is sure it reminds her of when she and Shawn first got together. Belle confirms that knowing she’s going to see Shawn today is bringing up a lot of emotions. Belle wonders if she should’ve told him she was coming. Marlena think he will be glad to see her. Belle hopes so but says she will keep her distance to let him have his time with his family.

Jennifer, Lucas, Shawn, and Ciara go through the time capsule which includes letters that Tom and Alice wrote each other, the deed to the Horton Cabin on Smith Island, and various souvenirs. Julie comes in and is happy to see Shawn, Ciara, and Lucas. Julie hugs them and says she missed all of them. Ciara says she was proud to be Doug’s granddaughter. Julie thanks them for coming. Steven then walks in, so Julie introduces him to the room.

Lani finishes a call with Chanel, checking in on her and Johnny watching the kids. Lani tells Eli that the twins have been on their best behavior for Chanel and Johnny. Eli says he’s so grateful for them to watch the twins so he could have the time to be there for his Grandma. Lani talks about how close Eli and Julie are even though he found her as an adult. Eli comments on being so lucky and talks about Julie being surrounded by her loved ones.

Steven meets Ciara and comments on how much she looks like Hope. Ciara takes that as a compliment and tells Julie how much Hope wanted to be there. Julie tells her that they spoke on the phone last night and agreed that Hope is where she needs to be with Bo. Julie introduces Steven to Shawn. Steven says he’s heard so much about him and then comments on Jennifer being so grown up as they hug. Jennifer then introduces Lucas to Steven. Jennifer reveals the time capsule which Julie is shocked to see has been opened. Julie joins them in looking through the contents. Julie calls it the Days of their Lives in a box. Julie then finds her grandma Alice’s diamond necklace inside and says she always wondered what happened to it. Julie says she’d love to go through everything with them but it’s time to go to St. Luke’s to honor her husband with a memorial and to say goodbye, so they all exit the house together. Steven stops and looks back at the time capsule before then exiting.

Maggie asks Liz and Marie to let bygones be bygones and focus on the fact that they are all together to celebrate Doug which they agree to do. Maggie calls it mature of them to let go of grievances from the 80s and proposes a truce. Liz and Marie agree to do it for Doug and shake hands. Marlena and Belle then approach. Marlena greets them and introduces them to Belle. Belle tells Liz that she’s a huge fan of her music. Marlena guesses they will see them at the service. Marlena stops to tell Liz that it’s good to see her and Marie are getting along so well. Marie says she wouldn’t go that far as Marlena walks away with Belle.

Marlena and Belle arrive outside St. Luke’s for the memorial. Belle greets Shawn and tells him that she just got in from Hong Kong. Julie arrives with Steven and introduces him. Julie thanks them all for coming. Marlena tells Julie that the priest is ready to start whenever she is. Julie takes her seat next to Maggie and Marlena as the priest begins the memorial service. The priest begins by calling Shawn up to read scripture from the book of John. After Shawn finishes, the priest calls up Ciara to read one of Doug’s favorite poems, “Gone From My Sight” by Henry Van Dyke. The priest then calls on Julie for the eulogy. Julie reads about Doug’s life, things he accomplished, and their life together. Julie talks about how everyone spoke about Doug’s kindness and says Doug saw something wonderful in all of them as she finishes and takes her seat. The priest announces they will close the service with Liz Chandler leading them in one of Doug’s favorite songs. Liz goes to the podium and says she would not have the career she’s had if not for Doug, so this one’s for him. Liz sings “Always” by Irving Berlin and everyone joins in singing along. Liz thanks them all and says that was beautiful as Julie looks at the portrait of Doug with a smile. Julie hugs Marie and tells her it was so wonderful that she came. Julie tells Liz that her singing was beautiful and perfect. Liz and Marie agree that Doug was the best. Abe and Paulina come over to Julie and tell her it was a wonderful service for a wonderful man. Julie thanks them. Steve and Kayla come over and assure they are there for anything she needs. Julie declares that she lost the love of her life today, but she feels love all around her from all of them. Jennifer reminds Julie that they have to go to the cemetery and offers to walk with her. Julie says she’ll be right there as everyone heads to the cemetery. Julie stays behind at the portrait of Doug and holds back tears before heading to the cemetery.

Marlena and Belle return home, talking about what a service it was. Marlena says she always knew how much Julie and Doug loved each other and how much Doug loved his family, but she did not know about Doug’s history in the navy. Marlena calls Doug a legend and asks if Belle was able to reach Shawn. Belle says she wanted to give him space to be with his family. Marlena reminds Belle that she’s his family too. Belle says he was grieving his grandfather and she doesn’t think he wanted to talk to her. Marlena doesn’t believe that, assuring that Shawn still loves her. Marlena decides she’s going to try to reach Shane to see if he can contact John to let him know that they’ve lost Doug. Belle sends her love if she does reach John. Marlena then heads to her room. Belle sits down on the couch until there’s a knock at the door and Shawn arrives.

Abe and Paulina sit together at home. Paulina says she could just picture Doug’s reaction to his memorial service and how proud he would be. Eli and Lani come in after putting the twins to sleep. Eli mentions singing the kids a song that Doug used to sing. Paulina proposes a toast.

Steve, Kayla, Jack, and Roman gather at the Brady Pub where they toast to Doug.

Jennifer, Lucas, Ciara, and Marie return to the Horton house. Jennifer comments on Liz singing so beautifully.

Steven sits at the Tom and Alice plaque in the town square. Steven comments on who knew the treasure that Alice was holding in the house. Steven admits the old him might have been tempted by that diamond necklace, but he’s a changed man.

Julie sits at the cemetery, crying over Doug and says all she ever wanted was to be his wife, so she questions what to do now. Julie is then approached by a young man, who introduces himself as Doug Williams.

THIS STILL NEEDS EXTENSIVE EDITING!

[dramatic music]

You ready?

I am. [sighs] Looks like I’m out of here. Take care of yourself, Bill.

Look out, world– or should I say Salem– ’cause here I come.

Your faith in me, Julie, it means the world to me.

Well, I meant it when I said that Doug was transformed. Why not you? I mean, it’s not how you start. It’s how you finish. He got out of prison, came to Salem, met our family, and was determined to change his life. And he did. Because he was strong and he was resilient and, as it turned out, he had an exceptionally kind heart.

Mm.

Darling, you have those qualities too.

As does my sister.

I love you so much. So glad you’re here, because just for a minute there, I forgot about what’s next: the memorial.

Do you think you will be able to– to attend?

Of course. I wouldn’t miss it.

Oh, thank you. I’ll do better ’cause you’re there.

I know how difficult a time this is for you, losing the love of your life, so I want you to know that I’m here for you, now and always.

And I’m here for you. All you have to do is ask.

And thank you for being here. It– [sighs] It means a lot.

Oh, but I’d count myself lucky if I never laid eyes on Liz Chandler again.

Well, then I guess today’s not your lucky day, huh?

Maggie, it’s so good to see you, although for such a sad occasion.

How have you been, Liz?

I’m fine. I’m well. And I gather you’re not that delighted to see me, Marie.

You gather correctly, especially not here in this town square named after my parents.

Well, for the record, I thought the world of your parents. It was you I couldn’t stand.

I’m glad you climbed through the bedroom window on your way to the memorial service. [both chuckle] Now, why don’t you freshen up? I’ll go downstairs. And then you come downstairs. And, oh, this is so exciting. It’s so wonderful. I’ll introduce you to your family. [both laugh]

[gasps]

You opened it?

It was a piece of cake, honestly. [laughs]

You’re amazing.

How did you do that?

She’s a magician, this one.

OK, all right, enough with the compliments. Let’s just see what’s in this thing.

Yes.

[soft orchestration] announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “Days of Our Lives.”

Lest you think I hold a grudge over what happened with Neil– how–how absurd would that be after all these years?

So I don’t have to look forward to your shooting me in another jealous rage?

Oh, good God, Marie, I mean, that was decades ago. You’re gonna relitigate that? You know damn well it was an accident. I thought you were an intruder.

The only intruder in that room was you. You slept with my husband in our bed. And when I came home, you shot me.

Well, gee, I do recall that. In fact, I went to prison for it. It’s kind of emblazoned in my brain.

All right, enough!

[tense music]

[dramatic music]

Hey, sweetie, is everything all right?

Yeah, yeah, I was just listening to “Friends and Lovers” on my phone. It’s such a beautiful song. And that Liz Chandler, what a voice, man.

I’m sure it reminds you of when you and Shawn were first together.

Yeah, yeah. Yeah, knowing I’m gonna see him today, it’s just– it’s just bringing up a lot of emotions. I don’t know, maybe I should have told him I was coming.

I think it’s fine. I think he’ll be glad to see you.

I hope so. But I’m gonna– I’m gonna keep my distance. I’m gonna let him have his time with his family.

Oh, look at all the letters Tom and Alice wrote each other.

Oh.

Wow.

Ooh, deed of sale for the Horton cabin on Smith Island. Look at that.

Look at this. This is a lock of hair. It’s Aunt Marie’s when she was a baby girl.

Oh, my God, oh, look at these. Grandma Addie’s and Great-Uncle Tommy’s baby shoes. They’re so cute, the little footie-wootie.

Look at this.

I cannot with these.

Oh, look who’s here, Ciara and Shawn-Douglas and you too, Lucas.

Oh, Grandma Julie. Hi.

I missed you, baby.

I missed you so much.

I’ve missed all of you.

I’m so sorry about Grandpa Doug.

Thank you.

Mm-hmm.

Oh–oh, Shawn-Douglas.

I was so, so proud to be his granddaughter.

He was always very proud of you too.

Can I have a hug too?

Oh, Lucas. I love you, darling.

Well, thank you so much, each and every one. God bless you for coming.

There you are. Ladies and gentlemen, I have a surprise. Allow me to present my long-lost baby brother, Steven.

[chuckles]

Well, I hope they are not giving their Auntie Chanel and Uncle Johnny a hard time. [chuckles] They love you too. OK, sis, I will check in later. I love you too. Bye. The twins have been on their best behavior, apparently.

That’s because they are crazy about Chanel and Johnny. You know, I’m so grateful for them for watching the twins. I mean, it gives me– gives me time to be there for my grandma.

Yeah. It’s so wonderful how close you and Julie are, considering that you just met her as an adult.

Yeah, well, I am lucky to have her in my life. And I know, as tough as this time must be for her, losing the love of her life, that she’s surrounded by family.

[soft music]

So you’re Steven Olson.

I am. [laughter]

Hi.

And you are?

Ciara Alice.

Oh, my, you look so much like your mother.

Well, I will take that as the highest compliment. Speaking of Mom, Grandma Julie, I hope you know how badly she wanted to be here.

I know. We spoke on the phone last night. We agreed she’s where she belongs, with your father.

Good.

And this is Shawn, Ciara’s brother.

Shawn-Douglas, I’ve heard so much about you.

It’s nice to meet you.

Nice to meet you.

And you remember Bill’s little girl?

[chuckles]

Jennifer Rose?

Yes.

Look at you, all grown up.

I know. Look at you, all grown up.

This is true. [laughter]

Good to see you.

Oh, it’s been far too long, cousin. And is this your husband?

Oh, this is my brother Lucas.

I’d heard that Bill had another son.

Yeah.

It’s nice to meet you, Lucas.

Yeah, yeah, likewise.

And what’s all this?

Oh, well, this is a time capsule that Gram hid behind the mantel way back in the ’60s.

It’s open!

Yes.

Ciara opened it.

I did.

Awesome! Oh, you are your mother’s daughter.

I am, aren’t I? [laughs]

Oh, what’s in it?

A lot.

Things–

Yeah.

Things–these are– this is days of our lives in a box. [laughter] What’s this? Yes.

[gasps]

Oh.

Wow.

Oh, my.

Those are some serious diamonds.

Yeah.

This is my grandmother’s necklace. My mother gave it to her as a birthday gift.

I have never seen her wear them.

Oh, no. She thought it was too regal for Salem.

That sounds like Gram.

I always wondered what happened to it.

Well, now you know.

Now I know a lot of things. Well, I’d love to go through every single thing with all of you, but… it’s time.

Time to go to St. Luke’s.

Time to honor my husband with a memorial and to say goodbye.

[dramatic music]

Oh, for heaven sakes, can we let bygones be bygones, especially bygones that are almost a half a century ago? I mean, can we just possibly focus on the fact that we’re together and we’re celebrating– we’re celebrating the life of Doug Williams, a man that we all admire…

Mm.

And we all respected.

Mm.

Think we can do that?

We can.

And we should.

Well, how mature of you both to finally let go of grievances from the ’80s. OK, so how about a truce, ladies?

[chuckles] Fine. I’ll let go of grievances if you will, Marie.

I will. I’ll do it for Doug.

For Doug.

Hello, ladies.

Marlena, Belle.

Oh, Marie Horton, how good to see you.

Well, it’s wonderful to see you, Marlena.

Thank you. This is my– this is my daughter Belle.

It’s good to meet you, Belle.

Oh, well, it’s good to meet both of you.

I can certainly see the resemblance.

Oh, me too. I’ve heard so much about you.

Oh, well, same here. And I’m a huge fan of your music.

Oh, I’m flattered. Thank you.

Well, I guess we will see you at the service, then.

Yeah.

Liz, so good to see that you and Marie are getting along so well.

[chuckles] I wouldn’t go that far.

Belle.

Hi. I just flew in from Hong Kong. I hope that’s OK.

Yeah. Yeah, of course it is.

Oh, Julie.

Oh. Oh, hello, everyone. This is my brother, Steve Olson, and… thank you, all of you, for coming.

Julie, apparently the priest is ready to start whenever you are.

Mm-hmm.

[dramatic music]

Good afternoon. I would like to welcome you to the celebration of the life of Douglas Williams, a man beloved by so many. I knew him as a devoted parishioner. You knew him as a friend or as a part of your family. But we all knew him as an extraordinary man– kind, generous, gifted in so many ways– a man who brightened the lives of all of us here and many who couldn’t be here. And to begin, I would like to call up Doug’s grandson Shawn-Douglas Brady to read Scripture.

“My Father’s house has many rooms. “If that were not so, “would I have not told you that I am going “to prepare a place for you? “And if I go and prepare a place for you, “I will come back and take you to be with me, that you also may be where I am.”

Thank you, Shawn-Douglas, for that reading from the book of John. Now I would like to call Doug’s granddaughter, Ciara, to share something with you all.

[sighs] This is one of my Grandpa Doug’s favorite poems. It is by Henry Van Dyke, and it is called “Gone From My Sight.” “I am standing upon the seashore. “The ship at my side spreads her white sails “to the moving breeze and starts for the blue ocean. “She’s an object of beauty and strength. “I stand and watch her until, at length, “she hangs like a speck of white cloud “just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other. “Then someone at my side says, ‘There, she is gone.’ “Gone where? “Gone from my sight. That is all. “She is just as large in mast, hull, and spar “as she was when she left my side. “And she’s just as able to bear her load “of living freight to her destined port. “Her diminished size is in me, not in her. “And just at the moment when someone says, “‘There, she is gone,’ “there are other eyes watching her coming “and other voices ready to take up the glad shout, ‘Here she comes!'”

And now we will hear a eulogy from Doug’s beloved wife, Julie.

Thank you. The look of love, Doug Williams had it and made the world shine with it, especially when he looked at us. My husband’s real name was Brent Douglas. He was raised in an orphanage until he ran away at age 4… [chuckles] And made the best of it, living off his charm and his wit. During World War II, he joined the navy and trained to be a fighter pilot. The service taught him how to navigate by air and sea, to fly a Steerman– open cockpit, goggles, long scarf, just as you’d imagine. He learned to dive off a 50-foot platform and swim five miles in one go, to survive for three days on a deserted beach without food or water, and how to kill a man with his bare hands. Not planning to use these skills in civilian life, he was happy to muster out of the navy 24 hours after Japan surrendered. But he loved the flying. He’d dream of it. He’d wake up with such a smile. After the war, he discovered he had a fine singing voice. And he flirted with show business… And finance. Here are some of the marvelous things he accomplished in the years he was among us. He raised an incredible daughter, our beloved Hope. And he opened a club named Doug’s Place, unforgettable for its music, for its warmth, for its class.

[somber music] He became the mayor of Salem and the captain of my heart. Here are some of his favorite things besides chocolate. [chuckles]

Italy. Grand opera. Lyrics. Puns of his own composing. Family dinners. Tap dancing. Up tunes. New places to go. Old songs to sing. The Dodgers. [laughs] New York City. Serenades. Sunshine in the morning. Performing. Poached eggs. [laughs] “The Count of Monte Cristo” and “Casablanca.” Every Christmas card that had photos of his friends and family. Piles of sheet music. [laughs] The morning sports page and an old safari jacket that he wore on every continent.

Red roses, red lips… [laughs] Red sauces, red wine, and an Indian ruby that he gave to me.

He took me to the Taj Mahal. He took me to the pyramids. He took me to the Great Wall of China.

And he took me to paradise with every kiss.

Songs he composed– “Ramshackle Daddy,” “Happy New Year to You,” “I Love to Tap,” and “I’ve Got the World By the Tail.” Joyful tunes, joyful tunes from a heart that was just pounding with the rhythm of life. And please let me tell you, his mind and his spirit were unchanging until too many happy birthdays stole all his strength away.

What gifts he had, my sweetest of sweethearts, my ageless, beautiful troubadour.

“My love is like a red, red rose “that’s sweetly sprung in June. “My love is like a melody that’s sweetly played in tune.”

So what will people remember about this exuberant, accomplished gentleman? Will it be the performances? Will it be the music? Will it be all those happy times? Besides his talent, you all spoke of his kindness. You know, in Webster’s dictionary, the word “kind” means gentle and generous. And that’s it. That’s it exactly.

He treated all strangers as potential friends, never returning unkindness with a– with a wry or cynical remark.

[sighs] Why did we love him so much? Because he saw us. He really saw us. Doug gave everyone, a visitor at the door or a troubled grandchild, this greeting. It was always smiling, and it was full of optimistic expectation. What he saw in us was something wonderful.

And we became, in his company, as wonderful as we all want to be.

No surprise, his favorite movie was “Love, Actually.” [laughter] He passionately reached out to people his whole life with a song, with a story, and that– [sighs] That look of love, love that transcends time and lifts us all into the light, where creation never ends and we are shining too.

Let us hold fast to that which is good, render to no person evil for evil, strengthen the fainthearted, support the weak, help the needy and the afflicted, and honor all people. Let us serve and love the Lord, rejoicing in the power of his spirit. And may God’s blessing be upon us and remain with us always. Amen. all: Amen.

And now to close our service, one of Doug’s dear friends, Liz Chandler, will lead us in one of his favorite songs.

I love you.

[mouthing words]

So I would not have the career I have today if it hadn’t been for Doug Williams. So, Doug, this is for you. * I’ll be loving you * * Always * * With a love that’s true *

* Always * all: * When the things you’ve planned *

Do you know it? all: * Need a helping hand * * I will understand * * Always, always * * Days may not be fair * * Always * * That’s when I’ll be there * * Always * * Not for just an hour * * Not for just a day * * Not for just a year * * But always *

Second verse one more time. all: * Days may not be fair *

Come on. all: * Always *

For Doug. [laughs] all: * That’s when I’ll be there * * Always * * Not for just an hour * * Not for just a day * * Not for just a year * * But always * – Just that last part again. all: * Not for just an hour * * Not for just a day * * Not for just a year * * But always *

Thank you. That was beautiful, all of you, beautiful.

[somber music]

Aunt Marie, oh, honey, it was so wonderful that you came. Oh, Liz. Your singing, it was beautiful. It was perfect.

Oh, Doug was the best.

Yes, he was. [chuckles] [indistinct chatter]

Julie.

[chuckles]

That was a wonderful memorial service.

Mm-hmm, for a wonderful man.

You bet.

Mm-hmm. [chuckles]

Thank you.

Mm.

My dears, thank you.

Mm-hmm.

Oh.

Anything you need.

We are here for you, OK?

You know, I lost the love of my life today, but… I feel love all around me from all of you.

Right.

Julie. We have to go to the cemetery. I’ll walk with you.

I’ll be right with you.

[breathes deeply]

[sighs]

[dramatic music] [both sigh]

What a service.

Yeah, it was.

Julie’s eulogy. Oh, my.

[chuckles]

I always knew how much they loved each other, yeah, and how much he loved his family. I did not know that he had joined the navy and trained as a fighter pilot.

Yeah.

What–what a man.

Yeah.

What a life. What a legend.

Yeah.

Anyway, were you–were you able to–to reach Shawn?

No. No, I wanted to give him some space to be with his family.

You know, you’re his family too.

Well, he was grieving his grandfather. And anyway, I don’t think he wanted to talk to me.

I don’t believe that. Shawn still loves you. OK, well, I think I’m going to try to reach Shane. I would like to see if he can contact John and… let him know that we’ve lost Doug.

OK, good. If you do reach Dad, will you please give him my love?

Oh, yes. Mwah.

[knock at door]

You know, I can just picture Doug’s reaction to that memorial service. [chuckles] Oh. Oh, he would be so proud, oh…

[chuckles]

Especially of Julie. Oh, her strength.

Mm-hmm.

That eulogy, oh, God– God only knows how she got through it. But, oh, boy, she hit it out of the park.

She did. She did.

Mm-hmm.

Well, we got the twins down.

Oh, well, that was fast.

[laughs]

Yeah.

I sang them one of Doug’s songs, one that he used to sing to them. I did my best. [laughter]

Baby, you did good. He did good.

Oh, I’m sure you did. And now it’s time for a toast.

Ooh.

Oh.

Here you are.

Thank you.

And for you, kind sir. Thank you.

[sighs] [glasses clink]

All right, here you go.

Thank you.

Ah. To a wonderful man who made us all better people.

Just for knowing him.

Yeah.

To Doug.

To Doug.

To Doug. [glasses clink]

Ah.

Ooh.

Liz sang so beautifully, didn’t she?

She did. It was very moving.

Mm.

Jennifer, you were telling me about this time capsule that you found and opened earlier.

Yeah, thanks to Ciara.

And wait until you see this diamond necklace that has been locked away for over 60 years.

Yeah, belonged to Grandma Alice. It’s gorgeous.

[tense music]

I could have sworn Grandma Julie put it back in the box.

She did. I saw her do it before we left for the service.

That’s what I thought. Me too. But it’s not in here. Where could it have gone?

[sighs] Grandma, you sly old dog. Who knew the treasure you were holding in that house?

The old me would have been tempted mightily by that diamond necklace. But…I’m a changed man.

[somber music]

My darling, my dearest love, all I ever wanted was to be your wife.

What do I do now?

[leaves rustling] Hello? Is someone there?

Sorry to disturb you.

Who are you?

I’m Doug Williams.

[suspenseful music]

Days of Our Lives Update

Days of Our Lives logo

Update written by Joseph

Marlena sits at home with her tablet reading Jack’s article in the Spectator about Doug’s death until there’s a knock at her door. Marlena answers and is surprised by her old friend Liz Chandler as they embrace.

At the Horton house, Jennifer takes a framed photo of Doug from the mantle and holds it as she cries.

Marie Horton returns to Salem and stops in the town square at the plaque of Tom and Alice. Maggie walks by and greets her as they embrace.

Jennifer looks at an old Horton family photo as Lucas arrives and greets her. Jennifer hugs him and says she’s so glad to see him. Lucas says he had to be there for Julie. Jennifer says Julie will be so happy as she really needs her family right now. Lucas asks how Julie is holding up. Jennifer says as well as can be expected, but she can only imagine how Julie is going to feel when she wakes up and Doug is not beside her.

Julie wakes up in bed and sees a photo of her and Doug on the night stand. She closes her eyes and flashes back to memories of Doug.

Lucas talks to Jennifer about how he loves the Horton house and remembers Doug’s loving hugs. Lucas recalls feeling like the black sheep of the Horton family but Doug would always go out his way to make him feel like he belonged. Jennifer states that family meant everything to Doug. Ciara and Shawn arrive to greet them.

Julie gets up and puts on her wedding ring, giving her a flashback to her and Doug’s wedding. Julie then looks out her window and is surprised to see her brother, Steven.

Marlena comments to Liz on how long it’s been. Liz says she left Salem in 1986 so they have a lot to catch up on. Marlena tells Liz that she’s so pleased that she came back for Doug’s service as it will mean the world to Julie. Liz asks how Julie is doing. Marlena says she’s putting on a brave face. Marlena asks if Liz is still living in LA. Liz confirms she is and invites Marlena and John to come stay with them some time. Marlena says she would love to and asks about Liz’s daughter Noelle. Liz says she’s got a boyfriend and a good job. Liz adds that she also now has two sons. Liz says they will find a way to get their two families together. Marlena agrees they will have to do that. Liz apologizes for losing touch with her. Marlena says they had gotten very close. Liz jokes that being kidnapped by Stefano DiMera is quite the bonding experience. Liz tells Marlena that she missed her and all the people in Salem, except Marie Horton.

Marie tells Maggie that she was so sorry to hear about Victor’s passing. Maggie thanks her for the flowers she sent. Marie says that was the least she could do. They talk about Salem losing extraordinary men in Victor and Doug. Maggie says that Doug lifted everyone’s spirits just being around him so her heart goes out to Julie as she knows what she is going through. Marie points out that Maggie has had to mourn two husbands. Maggie says she was lucky to have love twice with one of them being Marie’s brother, Mickey. Marie says after all this time, she still can’t believe Mickey is gone along with Tommy, Addie, and Bill. Marie mentions Tom and Alice and says there’s not a day that goes by that she doesn’t think about all of them. Maggie comments on the legacy that Tom and Alice left.

Jennifer tells Ciara and Shawn that it’s wonderful to see them and asks when Hope is coming. Shawn reveals that Hope is not coming as she went to see Bo in the hospital and he squeezed her hand. Lucas asks if Bo is waking up. Ciara says the doctors think it could have been involuntary but Hope believes his condition is improving. Jennifer says she completely understands why Hope wouldn’t leave Bo now and knows Julie will understand now.

Julie helps Steven in and questions why he is climbing through their bedroom window. Steven reminds her of how he did so when they were kids as they hug.

Ciara shows Jennifer and Lucas photos of her babies. Shawn notices the time capsule that Julie found in the fireplace left by Alice and questions it still not being open. Jennifer explains that no one has been able to get it open and Jack brought it to Boston to see if she could but she had no luck so she brought it back to Salem to see if someone else could take a crack at it. Ciara offers to give it a try.

Steven and Julie talk about how they’ve missed each other. Julie can’t remember the last time she saw him. Steven admits he’s not a great communicator but promises to do better. Julie says what counts is that he’s here now. Steven says when he heard about Doug, he knew he had to be there with her and he’s so sorry. Julie brings up that Doug talked about Steven more than she did. Steven recalls Doug as an insightful man with a heart of gold as he flashes back to their past. Julie hopes Steven didn’t come back home because he’s on the run from the law. Steven assures that’s all in the past. Julie says it better be because her grandson is in town and he works for the FBI.

Eli and Lani get prepared for Doug’s memorial at Paulina’s. Lani comments on how good Jack’s article on Doug is and talks about learning so much she didn’t know about Doug. Lani mentions how she can’t imagine Doug in jail, but figures people would say that about her too. Eli informs Lani that Doug went to prison for security fraud and his cellmate was Julie’s uncle, Bill Horton.

Abe, Roman, Paulina, Steve, and Kayla gather outside for Doug’s memorial service. They talk about it never getting easier. Jack joins them and says he’s grateful to Johnny and Chanel for watching the kids so they could gather for Doug. Paulina says they were glad to do it and comments on how Doug touched so many lives. Roman says he did with a word, a smile, or a song. Kayla wonders who will come back for Doug’s memorial. Steve says that Doug was loved by so many that he wouldn’t be surprised if a few blasts from the pasts came back to pay their respects.

Marie tells Maggie that she has such fond memories of growing up in Salem and only a few regrets that have to do with her unfortunate taste in men. Maggie asks which men she’s referring to. Marie brings up Alex Marshall and Neil Curtis, though admits she’s grateful to Alex for giving her daughter Jessica. Marie apologizes and says she shouldn’t be saying this since Maggie was involved with Neil and he is Sarah’s father, but all she got from Neil was a bitter rivalry with Liz Chandler, who despised her for marrying Neil.

Liz tells Marlena how she despised Marie for marrying Neil. Marlena points out that was a very long time ago. Liz agrees that today is about Doug, who was charming and kind. Liz brings up Doug getting her first break as a singer at his club and flashes back to that moment. Liz says she owes so much to Doug.

Lani asks Eli how she never knew about Julie marrying an ex-con, who was also married to her mom. Eli says he never shared since he didn’t know if she wanted that personal information out there, but she must have been cool with it since Jack put it in Doug’s obituary. Eli points out that Julie and Doug lived happily ever after. Lani jokes that she thought her family history was crazy. Eli talks about Julie having history with shady dudes and brings up her brother Steven being on the run from mobsters, fleeing Salem and never looking back.

Steven questions Julie saying her grandson is in the FBI. Julie says she’s very proud of him and tells him about Eli’s life. Steven says he can’t wait to meet them. Julie asks if he’s sure since she remembers him raising quite a bit of hell in the past, reminding Steven that he dealt drugs and stole jewels. Julie asks if he remembers when she asked him to be her partner in her antique business and flashes back to that time. Julie talks about how it all fell apart when Steven sold fakes to her customers and that betrayal broke her heart. Steven admits he has no excuse for how he hurt her and let her down but insists he’s not the same man anymore as he’s been transformed.

Kayla brings up Thanksgiving a few years ago when Doug was so brave, looked evil straight in the eye and didn’t back down as she flashes back to when Marlena became possessed by the Devil again. Kayla and Steve talk about Marlena feeling terrible but not being to blame for any of it. Abe points out that Marlena and Doug fought their way through it together. Kayla says they had so much goodness in their hearts.

After Liz leaves, Marlena sits back down and comments that no one ever had a truer friend than Doug as she flashes back to a memory with Doug. Marlena’s daughter Belle then arrives and tells Marlena that her flight from Hong Kong landed early. They hug as Marlena says she’s so glad she made it, especially since John got held up and will be so upset to miss Doug’s memorial. Marlena tells Belle about Liz Chandler coming by. Belle talks about loving her music. Marlena sits with Belle and asks how Shawn is doing. Belle admits she doesn’t really know as she’s been trying to give him space which is why she’s been spending so much time in Hong Kong, doing consulting work for DiMera, but she wanted to be there for Shawn as he mourns his Grandpa. Belle then reveals that Shawn doesn’t know she’s here which surprises Marlena as she questions her not speaking to him. Belle says they only spoke briefly on the phone but they haven’t seen each other much lately, so she doesn’t really know where things stand.

Lucas talks about trying to open the time capsule since February. Jennifer talks about Hope was always good at puzzles. Shawn asks about not just smashing it open but Lucas explains that he didn’t want to disrespect Alice that way. Jennifer explains that they trusted that Alice wanted them to find a way to open it without destroying what’s inside. Lucas jokes that they’ll have to wait another 60 years, but then Ciara manages to get it open easily, shocking Jennifer, Lucas, and Shawn.

Maggie tells Marie that she knows Neil was a real sore spot between her and Liz. Marie says whenever she thinks about all that went down, it stirs up all that anger with Liz all over again even after all these years when she should be letting go of old resentments. Maggie suggests they at least try. Marie remarks that she would count herself lucky if she never laid eyes on Liz Chandler again. Liz then approaches and guesses today is not her lucky day.

Julie questions Steven saying he’s been transformed. Steven explains how he met a guru in India six months ago who changed his life and helped him see that he had been living a hedonistic and somewhat amoral life. Steven assures that Julie doesn’t have to worry about the old him anymore as this is the new and improved version. Julie says she’s glad to hear that and she’s always believed a person can change for the better at any stage of their life. Julie brings up how Doug being so adored and respected is not the man that he started out to be.

THIS STILL NEEDS EXTENSIVE EDITING!

[pensive music]

Two weeks, six days, four hours, and a few minutes, and then look out, world– or should I say Salem– because here I come.

[knock at door]

Hello, Marlena. [laughs]

Liz Chandler? Is it you?

It’s been a long time.

Ah!

[both laugh] Oh, no.

Oh, yes.

[laughs]

Oh!

[somber music]

[crying]

Maggie.

Marie Horton, as I live and breathe. Oh.

[laughs]

That’s a good-looking family, don’t you think?

Lucas. Oh, my gosh. I am so glad to see you, little brother.

I had to be here, you know, for Julie.

Yeah. She’s gonna be so happy to see you. She just really–really needs her family right now.

Yeah. How’s she holding up?

As well as can be expected. Lucas, I just– you–you share the same bed with somebody for so many years. I can only imagine how Julie’s gonna feel when she wakes up and her sweet husband is not beside her.

[gasps]

I imagine you make quite an impression on every woman who comes to know you. You are the kind of a man that’s very difficult to forget, Doug.

Very difficult to– to ever forget.

[gasps]

[dramatic music]

[soft orchestration] announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “Days of Our Lives.”

[somber music]

I love this house so much. No matter how much time goes by– it could be a month, year, day, or an hour– it doesn’t matter.

When Doug was here, he’d go out of his way, and he’d give me a big, huge hug every time.

[sniffles]

He did give great hugs, didn’t he?

The best, the best hugs. You could just feel how much he loved you and his energy. When I found out I was a Horton, I thought I was the black sheep of the Horton family, but Doug would never make me feel that way. He would–he would always go out of his way to give me a huge hug and make me feel like I belonged, like he was really proud I was part of the family.

Family meant everything to Doug.

Hey, you two. Can we get in on some of that family love?

“God created man in his own image, “in the image of God created he him; “male and female created he them. and he blessed them.”

“And Jehovah God said, “‘It is not good that the man should be alone. I will make him a helpmeet for him.'”

What was that?

[quirky music]

Steven!

Hey, sis. Whoa. Long time, no see.

[chuckles]

Steven.

[somber music]

Oh, Liz, it is so good to see you again. How–how long has it been?

Oh, let’s see. Ha! I left Salem in 986, so it’s been… both: A long time.

[laughs] A lot to catch up on.

Yes, but let me just tell you, I’m so– I’m so pleased you came back for Doug’s service. It will mean the world to Julie.

Aw. How’s she doing?

Well, I–I saw her briefly yesterday, and she’s– she’s putting on a brave face, of course, as we knew she would, but–

Mm.

Well, come.

OK.

Sit. Now, am I right? Are you still living in LA?

Oh, yes, yes. You and John should come stay with us sometime. We have a lovely guest room.

Oh, that would be so nice.

Yeah.

Yeah, we’d like that. How is Noelle?

Fine, thank you. Good job, serious boyfriend. And also, I have two sons, all grown up.

No.

Yes.

Oh, my gosh. I’d love to meet them sometime.

Oh, we’ll have to do that. Yes, we’ll find a way to get the two families together. I–I hope.

You know what? We do have to do that.

OK. I’m sorry I–I… lost touch with you, Marlena.

Well, I am too.

[chuckles]

We had–we’d gotten very, very close, hadn’t we?

Yeah. Well, being kidnapped by Stefano DiMera is quite the bonding experience.

Yeah. And sadly for me, it was a recurring experience.

[laughs] You know, I missed you. I missed you, Marlena. And I also missed all the people here in Salem, except wretched Marie Horton, of course.

[chuckles]

Maggie, I was so sorry to hear about your husband’s passing.

Well, thank you, Marie. And–and the flowers you sent, they were lovely.

Well, that was the least I could do. You know, Salem has really lost a lot of extraordinary men of late– first Victor.

And now Doug. That wonderful man, he lifted everyone’s spirits just by being around him. Hmm. My heart goes out to Julie. I–I know all too well what she’s going through.

And you, you’ve mourned two husbands.

I was lucky to have two great loves and one of them being your wonderful brother.

Oh. You know, after all these years, I still can’t believe that Mickey’s gone and Tommy and Addie and Bill and my parents. There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think about each and every one of them.

Well, Alice and Tom, what a legacy they left.

[sighs]

Good to see you.

Good. Are you good?

Yeah.

It’s so wonderful to see the two of you.

Same here. Where’s your mom? When is she coming?

She isn’t. After you called with the news about Grandpa, she went to go visit my dad in the hospital, and… he squeezed her hand.

Oh, God, what?

Yeah.

Bo’s waking up?

We don’t know. We don’t know. The doctors think it may have been involuntary, but Mom is convinced that his condition is improving.

Yeah, she thinks it has something to do with her presence, you know, with the connection that they share.

Yeah.

Oh, my good– we have been praying for your dad to get better.

Yeah.

I mean, I completely understand why she would never leave Bo right now. I know Julie’ll understand too.

Whoa.

Oh!

[chuckles]

Steven. Steven. Wow, not that I’m not thrilled and excited to see you, but why in the hell are you climbing through our bedroom window?

Don’t look so shocked, Jules. Surely you remember that this was my means of entry into Grandma and Grandpa’s house when we were kids.

[chuckles] Yes. To their horror too.

Yeah, I know. Grandma was convinced that I’d take a terrible fall and break every bone in my body.

And you did a couple of times, as I remember. Why are you standing there, just grinning at me like a–like a Cheshire cat? Why don’t you give me a hug? Oh.

Oh.

[sighs]

Mm.

[somber music]

Baby Bo. He’s a little man.

I know.

Oh.

Oh, precious Addie. Look at her. How old is she now?

She just turned one.

Oh, my goodness, she is adorable.

Oh, thank you.

Oh, I love that you named her after your grandma.

I know.

What’s–what’s this?

Oh, that is the time capsule that Julie found behind the old mantel after the fire.

It’s still not open?

Still not open. Jack brought it to Boston to see if I could open it. I couldn’t budge it, so I brought it back to Salem for Thanksgiving to see if someone else would like to take a crack at it.

Do you mind if I give it a try?

[Shawn and Ciara chuckle]

Oh, Jules, how I’ve missed you.

How I’ve missed you.

[chuckles]

Oh, I cannot remember the last time I even set eyes on you.

Well, I’ve kept in touch.

In touch? Texts twice every year? You call that keeping in touch?

OK, I admit I’m not a great communicator, but I’ll do better, I promise.

But you’re here now. That counts.

Julie, when I heard about Doug, I knew I had to be here with you. I’m so sorry.

Thank you. Know something?

What?

He spoke of you in conversation more than I did.

Oh, yeah. Wondering how his fellow con man was doing.

No. Of course, he always had your number.

He was an insightful man.

[chuckles] With a heart of gold.

Now, I will make sure that Harold Trask gets his cashier’s check back. It’s up to you to come up with a story that will convince him why you want to dissolve your Salem partnership.

[scoffs] It would be a lot easier to explain if I could give the check back to Trask myself.

But we’re gonna do it my way, Steve. You’re a good enough con artist so that you can come up with some story to cover yourself.

I guess I can’t blame you for not trusting me, huh?

I guess you can’t. OK, I’ve been over everything. It’s understood, right?

Yep. And I do appreciate you giving me this break.

It’s not for you. It’s for Julie and your family. I told you.

Yeah, I know you told me. Believe me, Doug, I’m sorry I caused all this trouble, and I really hope I can undo it.

Steven, I hope you haven’t come back home because you’re on the run from the law.

What? No. That’s all in the past, Jules.

Well, it better be, because my grandson’s in town, you see, for Doug’s memorial. My grandson works for the FBI.

[dramatic music]

Jack did such a wonderful job on Doug’s obituary. There was so much I didn’t know about him. Wait, his real name was Brent Douglas?

Yeah. Yeah, it was.

OK, well, why did he change it?

Apparently, he just wanted a fresh start after he got released from prison.

[sighs] Prison. I cannot imagine Doug in prison. But then again, I guess people would probably say the same thing about me.

[chuckles]

Yeah.

What was he in for?

Well, Doug was actually quite the grifter. I mean, he went to prison for securities fraud.

Seriously?

Yeah. And get this. His cellmate was Julie’s uncle Bill Horton.

So how was the book?

Not bad.

What’s it about?

The king of the wild frontier.

Is that right? Mind if I take a look?

It’s all yours, Bill.

[sighs] Never gets easier, does it, saying goodbye to those we love?

No, it does not.

[somber music]

Well, I hope Johnny and Chanel know how grateful we are that they agreed to watch the kids today.

Oh, they were very happy to do it so that we all could be here to honor Doug. Oh, you know, that man, he touched so–so many lives, mostly in the little ways that nobody even ever hears about.

Yes, he did, with a word, smile, or song.

Yeah. I wonder who’s gonna come back for his memorial.

Well, Doug was loved by so many, I wouldn’t be surprised if a few blasts from the past came back to pay their respects.

Oh, Maggie, I have such fond memories of growing up here in Salem and only a few regrets.

Mm. Well, I have more than a few regrets.

[chuckles]

Oh! Well, mine all have to do with my unfortunate taste in men.

And what men are you referring to?

As if you couldn’t guess– Alex Marshall, Neil Curtis.

[holiday music] Although I must say I’m grateful to Alex. He gave me my beautiful daughter, my Jessica. But Neil, on the other hand– oh, Maggie, I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t be saying this, because I know you were once involved with him. And he is Sarah’s father. But the only thing I got from Neil was a bitter rivalry with Liz Chandler. She absolutely despised me for marrying him.

[dramatic music]

Ugh, how I despise that woman for marrying Neil, which turned out to be a dumpster fire, as you know.

Yeah. Liz, that was a very long time ago.

Yeah. You’re right. You’re right. Today is about Doug. He wasn’t only endlessly charming and kindhearted, but he–he was eager to champion people, like he did for me. He gave me my first big break, singing at his casino.

Well, you didn’t tell me what you’re doing here today. You doing some volunteer work?

No, but that’s a good idea, actually, now that I have all this free time on my hands.

You think you might be looking for a job?

Yeah. Got any ideas?

Yeah, yeah, you might consider coming to work as a singer for me at my club.

A job singing? Are you serious?

Yeah, that’s not anything I’m gonna kid about. I mean, you may not have any professional experience as a singer, but I mean, you got a wonderful voice.

Oh, Doug.

[chuckles] You better be careful. I might just take you up on that one.

[chuckles]

Hmm. I owe so much to that man.

We all do.

So Julie was married to an ex-con who was also married to her mom? How did I not know this?

I didn’t say anything ’cause I didn’t know if Julie wanted me sharing personal information.

Right. Well, it’s obviously out there now.

Yeah, yeah, she must’ve been cool with it if Jack put it in Doug’s obituary. But anyway, her and the ex-con, they lived happily ever after.

They sure did. Wow, I–I thought my family history was wild.

[both laugh]

Apparently, Julie had some practice with some shady dudes. And her brother, Steven, well, he–he fled Salem. He was on the run from some mobsters and never looked back.

[tense music]

So…

[chuckles] Your grandson is in the FBI?

Yes, he is. And I’m very proud of him. His name is Eli Grant. He is tall, handsome, and married to the most gorgeous, tall woman you have ever seen. And they have two beautiful babies.

Can’t wait to meet them.

Really? You sure?

Of course. Why wouldn’t I be?

Well, I seem to remember, in the past, you raised quite a bit of hell around here, darling.

[dramatic music] Remember? You dealt drugs. You stole jewels. I used to say to myself, that man has put every gray hair in my grandmother’s head.

Oh, come on, I wasn’t that bad.

You were a piece of work. Do you remember everything? Do you remember the time I came to you so excited, asking you to be my partner in my antique business? I was thrilled. I thought, this is gonna be a dream come true, ’cause I’m gonna be working with my baby brother. I did have a conversation with Doug about you and I going into partnership.

And what did he advise you to do?

Well, he didn’t advise me. He said that I should do as I saw fit.

And?

So I’d like to ask you formally to be my business partner, Steve.

I’d like to tell you I want Uncle Mickey to draw up all the documents so we’ll be legal as soon as possible.

But…

[sighs] I don’t have anything to invest, Julie. I can’t let you just give me half of this business.

[sighs] Oh, if I could only get my hands on some of my inheritance.

Honey, you don’t have to invest anything except your talent. Now, I’ve thought about it, and I feel if you put in a percentage of your share of the profits, you can pay me that way over a number of years, I don’t know, five or something. We’ll have Mickey work out the details. And then… it all fell apart. You sold fakes to my customers, a betrayal. And it broke my heart.

To my eternal regret. I have no excuse for how I hurt you, how I let you down. But I’m not the same man anymore, Jules. I’ve been transformed.

[somber music]

You know, I remember a Thanksgiving a few years ago. Doug was so brave. He looked evil straight in the eye, and he didn’t back down.

Doug is still a danger to himself and to others. Kayla knows that.

I’m not sure I agree with that anymore.

You’re not sure you agree? It’s clear that Julie has let her emotions take over her judgment.

Don’t talk to me about judgment, or I will show you what a danger to others really looks like.

That would be a mistake.

[unsettling music]

Ah!

You–you, you’re–you’re–

You’re confused. You’re lost. I can help you.

Look, let him– let him speak, Marlena.

Yeah, Mom, please.

Darling, what is it you’re trying to say?

You, you’re… the devil!

Marlena felt terrible, what she put him through.

But that wasn’t her, baby. She wasn’t to blame for any of it.

No, it wasn’t. I mean, it was just a terrible ordeal for both of them.

But they fought their way through it… together.

Yeah, they did. And Marlena, she was so brave and so strong too. And the two of them, Marlena and Doug, they had so much goodness in their heart.

[sighs]

[somber music]

Oh, Doug. No one ever had a truer friend.

The bride’s dressing room.

Are you sure I’m allowed in this room?

Julie and I are the only ones with you, and we won’t tell.

That’s good, ’cause I don’t want to get kicked out of church.

Oh, quickly.

[laughs]

Oh, there’s coffee. Look, let’s make coffee for everyone.

OK. I’ll make it.

Ah-ah-ah. My dear, you are the bride.

Oh, you’re right. OK, be my guest. Hope they have some mineral water. I don’t need caffeine right now.

Well, let’s see. We have decaffeinated coffee. They must know that some brides get nervous.

Yeah, this one’s been nervous.

OK, soon as I finish– or as soon as we finish here, I am personally going to go and bring your wedding gown.

[knock at door]

[door clicks open]

[chuckles]

Oh, you made it.

My flight from Hong Kong landed early.

Oh, I’m so glad you’re here.

[sighs]

Especially since your father couldn’t make it. He got–got called away on a mission, so–

[sighs]

But he will be so sorry to know that he missed Doug’s funeral.

Yeah.

So many people have arrived, though, coming to celebrate Doug, to honor him. In fact, Liz Chandler– Liz Chandler was here.

Liz Chandler was here?

Yeah, yeah, she stopped by. We had a nice chat.

I love her music. I remember when Shawn and I first started dating, he made me this love song CD. And “Friends and Lovers” was on it, and I just loved it. I listened to it all the time.

Hmm. Come sit. Tell me, how is Shawn doing?

I–I don’t really know. I’ve just–I’ve been trying to give him some space, which is why I’ve been spending all this time in Hong Kong, doing consulting work for DiMera. You know, I– I don’t know, I still wanted to be here to–to show him some support while he–he says goodbye to his grandpa. But he doesn’t know that I’m here.

What?

[sighs]

You haven’t spoken to him?

I mean, only briefly, by the phone. I mean, we just haven’t really seen much of each other lately, so I don’t really know where things stand.

You might as well give Ciara a shot at it.

Yeah.

I mean, you know I love a good challenge.

Well, don’t get your hopes up. I wouldn’t get too excited if I were you. I’ve been trying to open that since February.

Yeah?

Doesn’t budge.

OK, well, I’m me. Bring it over here, brother.

Here you go.

Let me give this a try.

OK, really, this is when we need Hope, because your mom was always so good at opening these puzzle boxes and figuring that out.

I don’t understand. Why don’t we just smash it open?

I thought of that. I was gonna smash it open. But, you know, I don’t want to disrespect Grandma Alice’s memory like that, can’t just bang it open.

Yes, I mean, we’re assuming that she is trusting us as a family to find a way to open it without damaging everything that’s on the inside.

That’s right, so now we got to be patient and wait another 60 years to find out.

No.

You’re actually not gonna have to wait that long.

[dramatic music]

[gasps]

You opened it?

Oh, it was a piece of cake, honestly.

[laughs]

Wow.

[both chuckle]

[chuckles]

I know Neil was a real sore spot between you and Liz.

Well, that’s putting it mildly. Oh, whenever I think of everything that went down, it just stirs up all that anger with Liz all over again, even after all these years, even at a time in my life when I should be letting go of old resentments, right?

Well, we should at least try.

Well, you’re right.

[chuckles] Oh, but I’d count myself lucky if I never laid eyes on Liz Chandler again.

Well, then I guess today’s not your lucky day, huh?

You’ve been transformed?

Completely transformed. You see, about six months ago, I visited an ashram.

An ashram, in India?

In India, where I met this guru, Rishi Sharma. Julie, he changed my life, helped me to see that it was due to my spiritual deficits that I’d been leading a hedonistic and somewhat amoral life. Honestly, my time with Rishi was a revelation, a renewal of my soul. So you don’t have to worry about the old Steven anymore. That–you’re looking at the new and improved version.

I’m glad to hear it.

[chuckles]

I have always believed that a person can change for the better at any stage of their life. Look at my darling Doug. The man we all adored and respected is not the man he started out to be.

[chuckles]

You ready?

I am. Looks like I’m out of here. Take care of yourself, Bill.

Look out, world– or should I say Salem– ’cause here I come.

Interview with Alexander Ludwig

TV Interview!

"Earth Abides" banner

Interview with Alexander Ludwig, Jessica Frances Dukes, Aaron Tveit, Todd Komarnicki and Kearie Peak of “Earth Abides” on MGM+ by Suzanne 11/20/24

This is a very exciting 6 part miniseries on MGM+. I hope you can watch it because it’s fascinating. Although it takes place in a post-apocalyptic world, it’s not too gross, gory or depressing. The acting is very good. Alexander Ludwig stars as “Ish,” a man who survives the pandemic that has destroyed most of the world’s population. Then he finds a wonderful woman, Emma (Jessica Frances Dukes), and they start their life together. Other people find them, and they start re-building the world. It’s got a very positive message about the future of the world, how people can adapt and get along, and about how the earth can heal. It was great to speak with the two stars, Ludwig and Dukes, as well as Aaron Tveit, who plays a pivotal character named Charlie, and the show’s creators and showrunners.  The series is based on an old scifi book but modernized. I think they did a great job.  We put up Tveit’s interview  later because there are spoilers in it.

About ‘Earth Abides’

In “Earth Abides,” when a plague of unprecedented virulence sweeps the globe, the human race is all but wiped out. In the aftermath, as the great machine of civilization slowly and inexorably breaks down, only a few shattered survivors remain to struggle against the slide into extinction. The series is based on George R. Stewart’s classic sci-fi novel of the same name.

A Note from Todd Komarnicki (Executive Producer/Writer/Showrunner)

Earth Abides was ahead of its time. George Stewart’s novel, despite being written in 1949, has cohered brilliantly with our current moment. Long before nature began to suffer at the hands of man’s inability to live in harmony with her, Stewart knew that the Earth never needed us. We are more of a pestilence she has survived. As the world within the novel starts over, the earth has a chance to reassert herself. It is now man who must be the survivor. But what if those chosen to be humanity’s second chance aren’t suited for each other or the task at hand. They are a mixed blend of personalities, the kind that might have never joined forces prior to the apocalypse. But the life altering thing that they all discover…is that their differences might become the only thing enabling them to persevere. The story is a stark reminder that our differences should not separate us but unite us. A lesson we could all pay closer attention to in these times so riven by strife.Alexander Ludwig (Ish) and Jessica Frances Duke (Emma) in "Earth Abides" - photo from MGM+ press site

When adapting this novel for television, it was Stewart’s brilliant story that remains the infrastructure for keeping the audience on the edge of their seats. We shed new light through a deeper level of intimacy introduced in our show. While the intent of the original remains untouched, the tenderness and vulnerability of its characters and their journey over the years has been heightened in a fundamental way. Showing that journey of over twenty years together without losing the narrative thread and the audience’s connection to the characters was one of the biggest challenges we faced in the adaptation. Letting the series be guided by Ish’s own voice and the characters sharing their story not only kept the narrative intact but made them relatable and deeply human. That human aspect is what I hope audiences connect with most. The show lives in the shadow of a society torn down to cobblestone, but that is just the stage for a thrill ride that is utterly human. It is full of perseverance but also doubt, rage, addiction, murder and rebirth. No matter how dark the road gets for these characters, there is always a sliver of light calling them forward…love. What I hope audiences take away from our show is that love…really does win.

Stewart’s best-selling novel, the 6-episode limited series story follows Ish (Ludwig) through the aftermath of a global plague as he tries to set the survivors on the road back to civilization.

Additionally, on television, Ludwig starred as Ace Spade in the Starz series Heels, which ran for two seasons and was recently licensed to Netflix after popular demand for a third season. The show, set in the world of independent wrestling, focuses on two rival brothers battling over their late father’s legacy. He is also recognized for his portrayal of Bjorn in the History Channel’s popular series Vikings.

On the big screen, Ludwig most recently reprised his role in the box office hit franchise Bad Boys 4: Ride Or Die alongside Will Smith, Martin Lawrence, and Vanessa Hudgens.  Ludwig joined the franchise with Bad Boys for Life (2020), which stands as the most successful film in the franchise, breaking box office records.   Ludwig will next appear in Killing Castro, directed by Eif Rivera, alongside Al Pacino, and will soon begin production on the horror thriller Night Comes, marking the feature directorial debut of veteran actor Jay Hernandez, set for release next year.

His additional film credits include Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant with Jake Gyllenhaal, National Champions featuring Uzo Aduba and J.K. Simmons, and the war epic Midway alongside Woody Harrelson and Dennis Quaid. He also starred in Peter Berg’s acclaimed Lone Survivor, blockbuster hit The Hunger Games with Jennifer Lawrence, and the hugely succesful Race to Witch Mountain opposite Dwayne Johnson and Carla Gugino.

Originally from Vancouver, Canada, Ludwig began his acting career at nine, landing his first major role as Will Stanton in the action-adventure film The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising in 2007. His earlier credits include Grown Ups 2 and When The Game Stands Tall.

Following his passions outside of acting and filmmaking; he is a gifted musician who recently released his debut full-length Country album Highway 99 via Broken Bow Records. A mixture of amplified guitars, climactic choruses, and heartfelt hooks, the 16-track collection offers universal stories about small towns, wild nights, broken hearts, and big dreams. A follow up to his 2021 self-titled EP and career-launching 2020 single “Let Me Be Your Whiskey,” Highway 99 was produced by Nashville heavy-hitters Kurt Allison and Tully Kennedy and proves Ludwig is making a permanent mark on Country music.
