Christine: We both saw it so clearly and– it– it wasn’t about us… [ Sighs ] Growing apart. It was– [ Sniffs ] It was about paul pulling away. He’s just not in love with me anymore.

[ Approaching footsteps ]

Christine: Oh, god. Phyllis.

Phyllis: Christine. Hey.

Christine: Did you want something?

Phyllis: Just enjoying this beautiful day, that’s all. It’s lovely today. Uh, enjoying my freedom. My new lease on life, if you will.

Christine: Uh-huh.

Phyllis: Hey, listen, I just wanna sincerely offer my– my sympathies.

Christine: For?

Phyllis: Daniel told me that you and paul are done. That it’s over.

Christine: My marriage is none of your business.

Phyllis: Um… it’s just been a while since you’ve been single, you know, and I thought maybe you could use some dating tips or something.

Christine: Oh, right. Yeah. Wait, are you serious? From you? Your latest romantic partner was a known felon who ended up dead. No, I don’t think I’m gonna be coming to you for advice.

Phyllis: Danny’s in town. Uh, for a few days.

Christine: Yeah. I saw him last night.

Phyllis: Oh, you did? Okay. Wow. It’s so wild. You ended things with paul and then… another ex of yours is in town for more than a few days. You see what I’m getting at here?

Christine I’m sure you’re gonna tell me.

Phyllis: Are you trying to rekindle something with danny, now that you’ve called it quits with paul?

Christine: We’re not friends, so we are definitely not gonna talk about my personal life.

Phyllis: Well, I feel like I am being a friend to you and to danny’s when I tell you, you just shouldn’t chase after him again.

Christine: Chase after him? Okay, first of all, that’s your thing, not mine. And second, unlike you and me, danny and I are actual friends. And daniel is my godson and we’ve always been close. I’ve heard that you’ve been hanging out with danny. And maybe you should take your own advice and not fool yourself into thinking that something will come of that. Right now, your number one priority should be getting your miserable life back on track.

Phyllis: You tore my son away from me. That was your doing.

Christine: Oh, no. That was your doing. All of it. The lies, the way you used people. You dragged an ex-boyfriend back here and drugged him to get a sample of his blood to cover up your little secret. God, look at me. I still get this worked up when I think of all the monstrous things that you have done.

Phyllis: What you’re going through right now is nothing compared to the pain that I felt. You took my son away from me, christine. That was you. I told my son the truth tonight. I said nothing but the truth. And as I said before, he was bound to find out sooner or later.

Christine: So you decided all by yourself the time was now.

Phyllis: Let me get something straight. I need to tell you right now. I love my son. I love him more than words could say. And I’m warning you and danny, don’t screw up my relationship with my son because then I won’t be responsible for my actions.

Lauren: Phyllis? Are you okay?

Esther: Is everything all right? You look a little out of sorts.

Christine: Do I? I just have a lot going on right now.

Nina: Feel like talking to an old friend? How long have you

[ Mellow piano music ]

Danny: You’re positive there is no hope? Counseling, or… maybe some more time apart?

Christine: No, no, no. It’s– it’s over. I–

[ Sighs ] I don’t have any more doubts. Not anymore. And there’s something about that conviction that… almost brings me a sense of peace.

[ Mellow piano music continues ]

Daniel: That’s a pretty tune. I wouldn’t say that the beat’s all that great or you know, would be that easy to dance to. It feels a bit melancholy. Wanna tell me what’s going on?

Phyllis: I just saw christine.

Lauren: Ah, that explains it.

Phyllis: She will never see me as anything other than the thorn in her side.

Lauren: And do you see her as anything other than the same?

Phyllis: What is it about you, christine? This hold you have over men. You put them in a trance or something, don’t you? Don’t you? First danny, then paul, michael. Am I forgetting someone?

Christine: Well, it seems to me that you’ve left quite a trail of your own. Danny being an excellent–

Phyllis: No, no, no, no. We’re not talking about me. We’re talking about you. The holy grail of romantic fantasies, aren’t you? Men would walk through fire. They would chuck everything that’s important to them. Forget– forget dignity. If there’s a chance at winning the beautiful christine…

Christine: I seem to recall a woman obsessed with my husband who faked not one but two paternity tests and lost her son in court as a result.

Phyllis: Do you want to take off the gloves, sweetie?

Christine: What’s going on with you? Why are you so filled with venom? Oh, is it jack? Are things falling apart with the first decent man you’ve managed to keep your hooks in, in longer than six months?

Phyllis: Oh, wow. So you do want to play, don’t you?

Christine: No, you know, actually, I don’T. I’ve had enough ugliness these past few months to–

Phyllis: Well, you brought it all on yourself.

Christine: I have two words for you, phyllis.

Phyllis: What are they, christine?

Christine: Bite me.

[ Door slamming ]

Phyllis: Honestly, lauren, I have tried to make peace with her.

Lauren: Have you? Really?

Nina: I’m so sorry that you and paul couldn’t work it out.

Christine: Yeah. Me too.

Nina: Are you okay?

[ Christine sighs ] Yeah. Um… you know, it’s just– it’s sad when a marriage comes to an end. It’s the death of so many things, you know, your dreams and expectations.

Nina: I know.

Christine: But I– I– I do believe it’s the right thing. You know, paul’s not in love with me anymore, and now that his future is not tied to mine, he can focus on what he does next. I’m gonna do the same thing. We’re just–

[ Sighs ] We’re different people than we were when we first met. We’re different… even from when we remarried 10 years ago.

Nina: Yeah. Well, hm… people change. Hell, look at us.

[ Chuckling ] From pregnant teen to… sleeping on a park bench to, you know, hey…

Christine: A best-selling author, screenwriter. Quite a transformation.

Nina: Mhm-hm. Well, I had a pretty fabulous roommate back in the day who facilitated that sea change. Made me a proper lady.

[ Both chuckling ]

Christine: Try this book on your head. Balance. This is perfect. This is great. You are doing great. Put your knees together.

[ Nina chuckling ]

Nina: Uh.

Christine: We had some good times.

Nina: Yeah, we did. And some not-so-good times.

Christine: Oh, like you stealing philip from me?

Nina: Oh. You know how badly I feel about that. But I got a wonderful son out of it.

Christine: That you did.

Nina: I’m here for you, cricket.

[ Sighs ]

Christine: You always have been.

Nina: Like you’ve always been there for me.

Christine: Nina, I really didn’t do anything.

Nina: Yes, you did, cricket. You made me the most incredible promise. From the moment you said that you would take care of my baby if I didn’t make it, I felt so much better. I stopped worrying that he would go to some institution or be brought up by strangers or something. I… I even wrote it down on a piece of paper and gave it to the chaplain. So everyone would know that I wanted you to have my baby.

Christine: I didn’t know that.

Nina: I wanted him to be brought up by someone that I knew would love him. Someone… who’d tell him about his real mother. Someone who would make him understand how much I loved him. Anyway, thanks.

Christine: I made one promise, nina. I’m just glad that I never had to act on it.

Nina: You’re the only real friend I’ve ever had.

[ Sighs ] I love you.

Christine: I love you too. You’ll

[ Christine sighs ]

Christine: I want the best for paul.

Nina: Yeah, I know you do. And I know he wants the best for you, too.

Christine: I just hope we can stay friends. That’s really what friendship’s all about, right? Wanting the best for one another.

Nina: Absolutely.

Christine: Well, while searching for what he wants for the next phase of his life. And I guess I am too.

Nina: Any decisions? I know you talk about work or play or…

[ Sighs ]

Christine: I saw danny last night.

Nine: No. He’s here in town?

Christine: He is going to stay in genoa city for a while between tours. Visit with daniel and lucy.

Nina: Oh, which means he has to see phyllis, poor guy.

Christine: That woman claims she’s changed her evil ways. That she’s walking a path of righteousness.

Nina: Oh, please.

Christine: I don’t buy for a minute, she’s gonna stay on it.

Nina: Oh, no, of course not. So, did seeing danny, like, you know, reawaken any old feelings? I mean, you guys had such a great love story and you also had so much fun together.

Christine: We do have quite a history.

Danny: Makes you wonder what the future is.

Christine: Oh, I always wonder.

Danny: Is there a romalotti in your future by chance?

Christine: Hm. You never know. Stranger things have happened.

Danny: What do you think? The lawyer and the rock singer, huh? Together.

Christine: Sounds like a good book, huh?

Danny: It does.

Christine yeah.

Danny: Does it have a happy ending?

Christine: I certainly hope so.

Danny: So do I.

Christine: All right. Do we need another candle?

Danny: No. No, it is perfect. It’s perfect. Just like you.

Christine: I’m serious.

Danny: I’m serious too. The place looks great. No one is gonna believe this is our first dinner party. Believe me. This is gonna be fun, isn’t it?

Christine: Well, I’ll let you know after I’ve fed everybody without spilling sauce on their laps.

Danny: You’re really nervous, aren’t you?

Christine: A little. But I figure, hey, it’s a joint effort. Any screw-ups and you take half the blame.

Danny: Well, that’s what husbands are for, dear.

Christine: Well, no matter what happens, I know one thing’s for sure. I’m happier than I ever imagined.

Danny: So, am I.

Christine: Well, you really are tired. I guess the concert tour did wear you out.

Danny: What the heck?

Christine: What’s the matter?

Danny: There’s some leak in here or something? There’s water dripping on me.

Christine: Huh. Well, it’s a good thing it woke you up. You have to be at rehearsal in a little while.

Danny: Yeah, it did wake me up.

Christine: Why are you looking at me like that?

Danny: Because there’s ice in this coffee.

Christine: Honey, it’s iced coffee.

Danny: Yeah. Well, there’s one ice cube only.

Christine: Are you accusing me of something?

Danny: The water that dripped on me was really cold.

Christine: Now just a second.

Danny: No, I’m not gonna wait. No. Was it from this cube?

Christine: Like I said, at least it woke you up.

Danny: Really? Well, I’m sure it’s gonna wake you up too.

Christine: No. No, no, no, you wouldn’T. Come on, no.

Danny: Wait yourself. You wait yourself.

Christine: Please, no.

Danny: There’s only one thing that’s gonna stop me.

Christine: Okay, I’ll do anything. Just name it. What?

Danny: Give me a kiss.

Christine: Okay.

Danny: Give me a kiss. Okay. Mhm. Feels good, huh?

Christine: I can’t believe you. It’s so cold. It’s so cold.

Danny: Oh, baby, I’ll warm you up. I’ll warm you up.

[ Both laughing ]

Christine: Well, I could definitely use some fun.

Daniel: So, you already saw christine then?

Danny: Yeah, we, uh, ran into one another. Now, don’t go thinking that it’s more than it really was.

Daniel: Sure. I can just ignore all that history between the two of you.

Danny: No, there is, uh… definitely history. I was affected more than I thought I would be when she told me it was over with paul.

Daniel: Well, I think that makes sense, dad. You know, somebody comes back in your life that you used to love.

Danny: Knowing that christine is now free, it just uh… it stirred up all these feelings and got me thinking about what could have been and… what maybe could still be.

[Coughing] Copd isn’t pretty.

[Coughing] I’m out of breath, and often out of the picture. ()

Lauren: It’s so good to see you.

Danny: You too.

Daniel: Here you go. Fabulous. Hey, you okay? Something happen at work?

Phyllis: No. I just had a little run-in with your godmother.

Daniel: Really? Christine?

Phyllis: Yeah. Still having trouble letting the past go, huh?

Phyllis: Well, I actually think it’s christine who can’t let the past go. She seems to… not accept that I am a changed woman.

Lauren: I keep telling your mother it is not healthy to hold on to this hatred from the past. Believe me, I understand that.

Daniel: Listen, nobody expects the two of you to be best friends, so…

Lauren: Exactly. Avoid her.

Phyllis: Oh, yeah. I– I mean, I will. I think it’ll be difficult in this town, but you know, I’m gonna try. I’m gonna try to do that. Definitely. From here on out, I’m just gonna make peace with cricket.

Danny: That’s great.

Lauren: Now, just do it.

Nina: So… here you are caught between two loves again.

Christine: I’ve been here before, but this time it’s different. I’m not choosing between the two of them.

Nina: No, I know. Paul is part of the past. Is danny the future? I mean… could you imagine reigniting a romance with him?

Christine: I don’t know. We’ve had so many stops and starts and… almosts.

Nina: Yeah, I know. But if you could get back what you had all those years ago, would you want to?

Christine: And get hurt so deeply again?

Nina: You know, it really wasn’t his fault the way things turned out.

Christine: Oh, I’m well aware of whose fault it was.

Danny: I’m just really sorry you had to go through this with phyllis. I– I certainly never wanted it to happen.

Christine: Just like you never wanted to take her to bed. Don’t answer that and please don’t give me any speeches about how if you could change the past, you would. Because you can’t, none of us can.

Danny: You can change the present and what happens in the future.

[ Scoffs ]

Christine: You seem to be forgetting your son. He is an innocent little boy. He didn’t ask to be brought in this world by mistake. But he’s here and he is your responsibility. Now, I think you should go. No.

Danny: I love you. I’ve never stopped loving you.

[ Breathing heavily ]

Christine: Just so you know. I haven’t said anything to paul but I– I expect we’ll be married during the holidays.

[ Sobbing ] How could you do this?

Lauren: Aw, I’m glad I could help. Now, you know that I have been on the bad side of christine a time or two, but we made it through. And we, like you, have shared some past romantic partners. But I’m not thinking about her when I’m reflecting fondly on my relationship with paul or danny. And you shouldn’t be thinking about her either when you’re thinking about the good times with these guys. Or when you’re making new memories. Okay?

[ Lauren chuckling ]

Christine: We missed our chance.

Nina: Okay, well, really? Because you and danny are both single for the first time in a long time. Do you see any reason why you shouldn’t explore the possibility of a relationship? You know, just find out one way or the other if there’s something there. But listen, what if the timing is right, finally? What if after all these years you guys could have something amazing? I mean, don’t you owe it to yourself to find out?

Lauren: Oh, my goodness. I heard you were back from lisbon. Hi. I didn’t know you were in town.

Nina: Yeah, I just got here.

Lauren: Oh, my goodness. How are you?

Christine: Is michael still in singapore?

Lauren: Yes, he is. Oh, gloria can certainly get herself into some very interesting situations. I have no idea where she would be if she didn’t have a son who is a fabulous attorney. Anyway, enough about that. How was your trip? Oh, you and paul?

Christine: It’s, uh, it’s over.

Lauren: Oh, honey, I’m so sorry.

Nina: Our friend is just trying to decide what her future looks like.

Lauren: Professionally?

Christine: Uh, yeah, partly.

Lauren: Well, you know, you and michael, you really enjoyed being in practice together.

Christine: Well, michael wouldn’t take no for an answer.

Michael: No, I think the combination of your skills and mine has the greatest likelihood of success. And I want– I need this to be a success.

Christine: So, you’re at my mercy.

Michael: [ Scoffs ] Hm. Well, once again. This is the contract desmond signed. He wanted something the size of the genoa city phone book. But I insisted it be concise, simple, and open-ended.

Christine: He must want you very badly.

Danny: Well, desmond doesn’t know it yet, but he wants us.

Christine: Baldwin, williams, and associates.

Michael: We can put your name first if you like.

Christine: No, it sounds better this way.

Michael: Well, then let’s put pen to paper.

[ Christine sighs ]

Nina: Hey. What is it? What are you thinking about?

Christine: You– you both just, you have… careers that you love and you have terrific children. And… you know, I just wonder, did I… make a mistake putting career ahead of family?

Christine: Should I have made different choices?

Nina: Oh, honey. No, don’t second guess yourself.

Lauren: Yeah, look, we all make choices and we all use the information we have at the time. None of us has a crystal ball.

Christine: But paul wanted a family… and I– I put him off.

Paul: You care a lot more about your partnership with baldwin than you do about starting a family with me.

Christine: That’s not true.

Paul: It is true.

Christine: Paul, when I thought I was pregnant… I wasn’t excited. Not the way an expectant mother should be. I want to be thrilled when I am carrying your baby.

Paul: Right. So in two years, you will be?

Christine: Yes, I will.

Paul: You know… what I think you don’t understand is there’s always gonna be something. There’s always gonna be a little reason why having a baby isn’t convenient.

Christine: All I can say is I am sorry that I wasn’t honest from the beginning. That is why I came home now to talk to you. Paul, this isn’t the right time for me. We have to be in this together.

[ Paul sighs ]

Paul: Well, it just seems as though that for the next two years we won’t be.

Christine: I hope you understand how I feel. God, please tell me that you do. I mean, yeah. You’re a little girl and you’re playing with your dolls and you just… you always assume you’re gonna be a mom one day. Suddenly here you are and– and… and it didn’t happen.

[ Sighs ] And it– it just makes you wonder.

Nina: Yeah. But, what if not having children of your own allowed you to make a difference in the lives of other people’s children, you know? All that work you did with pregnant teenagers. All the time you spent with chance when he was little. I mean, you’re aunty cricket. And you played a major role in daniel’s life.

Lauren: And fen’S.

Christine: Paul and I had… that one chance to have a child and then…

Paul: Look at those beautiful blue eyes. We’re at memorial. You had surgery. Okay? The doctors took really good…

Christine: The car? The car.

Paul: Yeah, I know. I know there was a car and you were injured. I promise you, everything’s gonna be fine. You’re in recovery now. You don’t have to talk, just rest. It’s okay. Just rest.

Christine: No, the baby.

Paul: Sh, sh, sh. No, no, no. Everything’s gonna be fine.

Christine: No.

[ Sobbing ] Tell me the baby made it. Tell me the baby made it, please. Tell me.

Paul: I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry.

Christine: No.

Paul: I’m afraid we lost her. I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry.

[ Christine sobbing ]

Nina: Maybe it is too late to have children. But you know what? It’s certainly not too late to… have a romance. You know, have some fun, be happy.

Christine: Yeah. So, nina… [ Clears throat ] Thinks I should… explore things with danny since he’s gonna be in town for a while.

Lauren: Oh, wow. Is that… something you would want?

Christine: Oh, I don’t know.

[ Sighs ] You know, we’ve moved on. We– we’ve become great friends. I don’t want to lose that, and… quite frankly, and I know she’s your friend lauren, but I do not need the aggravation of phyllis right now.

Lauren: Well, I was just with phyllis and we ran into danny and daniel at the club. And she was saying how she regretted that she… let you get underneath her skin. And that she wanted to do better.

Nina: Um, forget phillis. Okay?

Christine: Ah, I wish I could.

Daniel: You know, mom, I keep hearing great things about your work at omega sphere.

Phyllis: Oh, do you? You know, I’m working very hard and I’m taking every opportunity to be a better person. Okay? So, I declare, today is day one of my christine-free brain. Thoughts?

Danny: Wow. Well, keeping that up is gonna be quite the accomplishment.

Daniel: I don’t think you’ll make it to day two.

Danny: Ah, come on.

Phyllis: Have a little faith.

Daniel: I would love for you to succeed. I would, I really would. But you know, christine has been great to this family and you have to admit that. And she let me live with her and she defended me in court. Why do you even care anyway? I mean, it’s got to be cramping your style with dad having a teenage kid underfoot.

Christine: I already explained to you why I care.

Daniel: Because I’m the son you never had.

Christine: Yeah. Don’t make me regret being straight with you.

Daniel: I’m sorry.

Christine: What, did you get the feeling that I wasn’t sincere? Because I was. I think you’re terrific. I’ve enjoyed our time together. I think it would be a real shame if you left this way.

Daniel: What’s the point in staying?

Christine: Because I want you to stay and I know it would mean the world to danny.

Phyllis: Well, then cheers to the b– christine.

Danny: Hear, hear.

Lauren: Well, I’m gonna get a coffee to go and go to my meeting. I really hope I get to see you again before you go to los angeles.

Nina: Yeah, sure.

Lauren: And honey, if you need anything, you call me. All right?

Christine: Thank you.

Lauren: All right.

Christine: See you soon.

Lauren: Okay, you got it. Bye.

Nina: Bye. You’re really at a crossroads, aren’t you?

Christine: I guess I am.

Nina: I wish I could write the next chapter of your life for you. But you know, you’re gonna have to do that yourself.

[ Christine chuckles ]

Christine: I know.

Nina: And listen, don’t beat yourself up about… what you did or didn’t do in the past, right? You had two great loves. It’s more than most people get.

Christine: You’re right. And I am very grateful for everything I’ve been given. Including an amazing friend who has sat with me here and talked everything through. Reminisced, played what if? But I do think I have a better idea of which direction I wanna go in.

Nina: Good and you know, you can go anywhere. Just remember you’ve got a best friend who wants to come along for the ride.

[ Both giggling ]

Christine: Always.

Danny: Here, let me help you with this.

Daniel: Whoa, whoa, whoa. I got it. I got it. I uh, gotta get out of here. I gotta get to a meeting. Why don’t you come with me?

Phyllis: Ha, really?

Daniel: Mhm-hm. Being pitched a video game for the platform and, uh, kind of like your take on it.

Phyllis: I have so many opinions.

Danny: Whoa, shocker.

Phyllis: Oh, my goodness, daniel. Okay.

Danny: You are– you’re doing really well.

Phyllis: Hey, um, would you be interested in having dinner with me tonight?

Danny: Oh, um… you know what? We’ll, um… yeah, we’ll figure something out. Okay?

Phyllis: Okay.

Christine: Hi. How are you?

Daniel: Hey.

Christine: Good to see you.

Daniel: Good to see you. Yeah.

Danny: Hi.

Christine: Hi.

Danny: Wow. I– I’ve been thinking about you.

Christine: Yeah?

Danny: Yeah.

Christine: Yeah?

Danny: Yeah. I wanted to get your thoughts on something that I’m working on.

Christine: Okay.

Danny: Yeah?

Christine: Yeah.

Danny: Right this way. Step right up. Have a seat, my dear. Don’t worry, you don’t have to sing.

Nick: Good morning, dad.

Victor: Hey, son. Hi, sweetheart.

Victoria: Good morning.

Victor: So, to what do I owe this visit?

Nick: I brought vic up to speed about your mental fitness, the truth about your health.

Victor: My health?

Victoria: Daddy, nick told me that you’ve been fooling us this whole time. I can’t believe you. I can’t believe that you would let me think that there’s something seriously wrong with you. I mean, did you feel that my loyalty needed to be tested that badly? Do you actually think that I would exploit your health just for a job title?

Victor: What is this all about?

Kyle: You’re doing everything right, mariah. And the audiologist you saw came highly recommended.

Mariah: Mm-hmm. Yep. Dr. George is amazing. You know, she was on devon’s care team when he got his cochlear implant.

Kyle: Perfect. He knows her from personal experience.

Mariah: She’s fantastic. She’s so knowledgeable and extremely patient, especially with tessa and me and our endless questions.

Kyle: See, you’re setting yourselves up for success in every way.

Mariah: Yeah, but still, I just have all of these doubts, these worries in my mind.

Kyle: Well, then let’s take the what-ifs head on. Even if the hearing aids don’t work, there are other options, right?

Mariah: There are.

Kyle: Okay. You have a strong support team.

Mariah: Yeah, the best.

Kyle: You can do this, mariah.

Mariah: Thank you. I needed to hear that. Well, what about you? How is the job search going?

Kyle: Oh. Uh, refresh my memory. Um, what exactly is a job?

Mariah: Oh, please tell me you’re at least looking.

Kyle: Why? I’m rather enjoying the easy life.

Mariah: Yeah, because you always struck me as a man of leisure.

Kyle: Well, I’m learning how to make sourdough from mrs. Martinez.

Kyle: No, no. Um, but I am having fun.

Mariah: That’s great. But how much longer can that last? I mean, I know you. You’re just like your father. You love hard work. You love proving yourself.

Kyle: That’s true. And the downtime has been driving me crazy.

Mariah: Okay. So, do you have any idea what you wanna do next?

Kyle: I do actually. I want to be back at jabot in my old co-ceo job.

Mariah: Okay. Wait a second. I– I– I thought you said things were going downhill at jabot, and now you want back in? I think it’s too bad since your uncle has your old job.

Kyle: That could be changing soon.

Billy: Look at you. You’re here.

Chelsea: I’m back, baby.

Billy: Thank god.

Chelsea: That was the welcome home I was waiting for.

Billy: It’s damn good to see you.

Chelsea: Did you miss me?

Billy: Every day. And why didn’t you tell me you were coming home?

Chelsea: I wanted to surprise you. Be a little mysterious. Did it work?

Billy: Am I smiling?

Chelsea: Your face. It’s not the same as video chats.

Billy: No, it’s not the same like this.

Chelsea: Well, full disclosure, I’m also here for a little bit of work. I have a marchetti meeting to discuss the spring collection.

Billy: I heard about that.

Chelsea: I also need to put out a few fires.

Billy: Trouble at marchetti?

Chelsea: Let’s just say summer and chloe both have very strong personalities.

Billy: I haven’t heard of any issues.

Chelsea: Well, that’s about to change.

Summer: They’re good, but they’re just not there yet.

Chloe: Um, oh, okay, uh, these are just initial sketches just to give you an idea of where we’re headed.

Summer: I get that. But I really do think that we need to go back to the drawing board. Start completely fresh.

Chloe: We’ve done that a couple times already. Look, summer, can you please just trust me and my years of experience? These are good. We just need a bit more time to get them fleshed out.

Summer: Marchetti has a very specific look. A very specific clientele.

Chloe: [ Chuckles ] Okay, look, you just need to give chelsea and me more leeway. We know what we’re doing. We have years of experience.

Summer: So, you mean more experience than– than me?

Chloe: That’s not what I said.

Summer: Look, I know that you and chelsea have a lot of experience. You’ve worked together successfully in fashion before and I know that that means that you’re used to doing what you want to do. But I’m in charge of marchetti and I know exactly what I want.

Chloe: Fair. But also being in charge means listening to your people and letting their creativity flow.

Summer: So, you think that I’m holding you back? Is that it?

Chloe: Look, I– I thought maybe in the beginning when we were working together, maybe there were just some initial bumps in the road, but lately, you seem to be second-guessing every design and suggestion we make. Why can’t you just let go?

Nick: Dad, she knows everything.

Victoria: Yeah, I know everything. Nick told me that you’ve been pretending to appear mentally unstable, forgetting big life events, drawing strange pictures and leaving them behind like breadcrumbs for nicholas to find.

Nick: I know you had reasons for it. Vic and I have talked about it. We’re willing to go along with this plan of yours to help you prove that adam is the one you need to be worried about.

Victoria: That’s right. Adam. Adam is the one with the loyalty issue. This plan should be for him and for him alone.

Victor: I don’t know what the hell you’re talking about. What plan?

Nick: The plan that you admitted to me.

Victor: I didn’t admit to a damn thing. I didn’t set a trap for anyone. What are you talking about?

Nick: Dad, enough with these games. You said to me that you were setting a trap to uncover any traitors that were around you.

Victor: Are you trying to trick me?

Victoria: Oh, god. Come on. You know that’s not true.

Victor: I know what you’re doing. I know exactly what you’re doing. You’re trying to convince me that I’m losing my own mind.

Adam: Well, good morning, barely.

Sally: Oh, my god. What time is it?

Adam: It’s, um, it’s pretty late. Which is not surprising since we were, uh, up most of the night.

Sally: Have you heard from your work?

Adam: Yeah. I got a half a dozen texts from nate that I didn’t hear. Haven’t, uh, slept that soundly in a long time.

Sally: Yeah, me neither, I guess.

Adam: Look, I know that this was unexpected and I just wanna make sure that you’re okay. I know we still have a lot to unpack after all that we talked about and, uh, and did last night. I understand if last night does not mean what I hope it means. Do you regret that we spent the night together?

Sally: I don’t regret what happened last night. But you’re right. There is a lot to unpack.

Adam: We could talk once I’m done with work if you want. We can– maybe wanna grab some dinner?

Sally: I think I just need to take a breath. You know, just let it sink in before I figure out where things go from here.

Adam: Of course.

Sally: Thanks. I… appreciate that.

Adam: For the record.

Sally: Yeah.

Adam: I don’t regret a single moment about last night. I’ll see you later.

Nick: Nobody’s trying to trick you, dad. After our conversation last night, I reached out to vic. I told her everything.

Victor: Our conversation last night?

Nick: Yes. I confronted you about the drawing adam found in your desk. The one made up of the snake with all the kids’ names in it. It’s from the serpent of names. From that– that– that book from my childhood that I loved so much.

Victoria: Nick told me that you’ve been faking this condition of yours and you’ve been trying to deceive all of us.

Victor: What?

Nick: You confessed to me that you were setting a trap to test your kid’s loyalty.

Victor: I– I don’t know. Do I need to do that?

[ Knocking on door ] Come in. Oh, nate.

Nate: Sorry for interrupting.

Victor: Take me out of here. What the hell are you talking about?

Nick: Dad.

Nate: Of course.

Nick: What the hell is going on?

Billy: So, how’s my buddy, connor, doing?

Chelsea: He’s doing great. He says to say hello to you.

Billy: Oh, yeah? Tell him I say hello. And that’s all true? Everything’s good with him?

Chelsea: It’s better than good, billy. The school is fantastic. It’s doing wonders for connor’s self-esteem and mental health.

Billy: That’s amazing.

Chelsea: Yeah. He’s around a bunch of kids that struggle with the same difficulties, you know? His age, they can talk about things openly. So, it was the right move going to the school.

Billy: I know the last time that I visited, he, uh, he seemed really proud of himself. I think some of that had to do with him picking the school, you know, finding it on his own, helping you and adam make that tough decision to go there.

Chelsea: He knew what he wanted. My son is smart, intuitive. Oh, and he has also moved into the dorms, so that’s going well.

Billy: Wow. Not afraid to make choices for himself, huh?

Chelsea: Yeah. And he has also told me with confidence that if I want to come back to genoa city so I don’t have to continue working remotely, he supports that.

Billy: Well, he must feel at ease there.

Chelsea: Yeah, he does. He is busy. He has so many activities. He’s playing sports. I definitely plan to go back and see him on the weekends. But the truth is, even when I was there, I was only seeing him on the weekends anyway because it’s a boarding school.

Billy: Look at you. You did the right thing by your kid. That’s good. You made him feel safe and heard.

Chelsea: Well, thank you for all your support. It really means a lot to me.

Billy: He’s a wonderful boy and you’re an amazing mother. And selfishly, I’m very happy you’re gonna be spending more time here ’cause I need you around more than ever.

Chelsea: You know, I still have my apartment upstairs.

Summer: I’m not second guessing. I have faith in you and chelsea.

Chloe: Well, it doesn’t feel that way.

Summer: It’s not personal. I just know what I want and frankly, I haven’t seen it yet.

Chloe: Okay. Well, maybe you just need to open your mind a little. I mean, we just need to meet in the middle on this.

Summer: We can’t afford to put out anything that’s less than perfection. Spring is an incredibly competitive time in fashion.

Chloe: Yeah. I’m aware of that.

Summer: We need to keep our customers engaged and excited. We actually need to up the ante. That has been our goal ever since we moved marchetti to the states.

Chloe: And we will. We have done customer surveys and research. At a certain point, you just need to let it all go and trust ourselves, that we know what they’re looking for.

Summer: Our sales have been down as of late. And I actually don’t think that we just need to let it go. I think that we need to be more targeted and specific, and that is the reason I have been trying to push you and chelsea to be the absolute best that you can be.

Chloe: Okay. Noted about the sales. I will make a point to pay attention to that. But I think it’s your fears that are clouding your judgment.

Summer: What fears?

Chloe: Well, maybe you’re feeling the need to prove yourself now that kyle is gone and you’re worried that you won’t measure up on your own.

Summer: Wow. Okay.

Chloe: Oh, look– look, I’m sorry. I– I– I’m not blaming you. I– I just think that maybe you’re feeling, you know, the slumping of sales and, you know, it’s throwing you off. And for some reason, you just can’t trust yourself and know that chelsea and I can deliver for you.

Summer: That’s not what’s happening here.

Chloe: Okay. Well, then the only other reason is you don’t think that we can pull this off.

Billy: I’m really enjoying having you home.

Chelsea: Mm-hmm. Me too. You know, I didn’t know, um, I don’t know if I was gonna be able to track you down today. I didn’t know your schedule at jabot.

Billy: Yeah. Jabot.

Chelsea: Uh-oh. Still facing problems at work?

Billy: It’s chaotic.

Chelsea: I thought things would get better now that ashley’s back at the company.

Billy: Well, that part is good. It’s been nice having her back, but tucker’s still in town and it’s one underhanded move after another.

Chelsea: Mm-hmm.

Billy: I don’t think I told you, but he got phyllis and her it skills to hack into jabot’s account and then deposit that money into my personal account.

Chelsea: What? To make it look like you were embezzling money?

Billy: Yes.

Chelsea: To what end?

Billy: Like I said, it’s chaotic. We, jack, and I figured that out pretty quickly, but he showed up at jack and diane’s wedding with a wedding gift, and of course, there was a listening device attached to it.

Chelsea: Are you serious?

Billy: To top it all off–

Chelsea: The brass on him.

Billy: Ashley’s back in town and she wants to figure out what he’s up to and she’s determined.

Chelsea: Oh, figure out how? She can’t just ask him.

Billy: Wouldn’t that be nice? No. She’s got a plan and I don’t like it, but I know better to try and control my sister. I mean, she’s watching out for the family company, so that I support.

Chelsea: I mean, do you really think tucker can do damage to jabot? I mean, his behavior seems underhanded and sketchy, but also very childish.

Billy: I hear you. I’m not sure if it’s all a diversion or what.

Chelsea: Oh, so he can like attack from another angle.

Billy: I would like to believe that we can handle another tucker-like attack, but I’m– I’m not sure. You know, he can hit hard when the mood strikes.

Chelsea: Yeah. Well, you think ashley will soften him?

Billy: She’s determined, like I said. She thinks she can handle him.

Chelsea: Well, if anybody’s got a shot, it’s ashley. I mean, she’s his weakness or used to be.

Billy: Hm. At this point, I don’t– I don’t know. Right now, I think I have a bigger problem to solve.

Chelsea: Jack?

Billy: No. My nephew, kyle. I think he’s coming after me.

Mariah: Why would you think that billy would lose his job so soon? Did he screw up again? Pulled a billy abbott special?

Kyle: Not yet, but it’s only a matter of time. The best predictor of future behavior is the past.

Mariah: And you think destruction is in billy’s nature?

Kyle: I don’t think we should wait around for him to do what he always does. Smart move is to take action before he has a chance to mess things up at jabot.

Mariah: Yeah, I do not like this at all.

Kyle: What?

Mariah: The– the look in your eyes, the tone in your voice. I’ve never known you to be ruthless.

Kyle: I’m only looking out for my family’s company and myself.

Mariah: Are you really gonna try to get billy, your uncle, fired?

Kyle: Okay. I’m not actively trying to undermine him, no. But I am going after what I want. Look, I gave my father an ultimatum: Bring me back as co-ceo or I walk for good.

Mariah: Wow. That seems harsh. And– and you know ultimatums rarely work, especially with family.

Kyle: I don’t feel like I had any other choice.

Mariah: Is it really worth getting into a family war just to take back your co-ceo position? I mean, does the job really mean that much to you?

Kyle: Maybe it does, mariah.

Mariah: Kyle, you are smart, you’re focused, energetic. You can do anything. And maybe it’s time to think about going out on your own, starting your own business, free of family politics and tension.

Nate: I’m sure whatever victoria and nick were saying to you, they meant well. Their intentions are good.

Victor: I’m not sure about that.

Nate: They’re worried about their father. They’re looking out for you. Wanna protect you.

Victor: They just wanna make a big deal out of this. They want me to be examined, to be looked at, to– tested. I don’t want that intrusion intrusion in my life.

Nate: Understood.

Victor: By the way, have you been able to get ahold of the specialist you were promising me?

Nate: I’m waiting for a callback.

Victor: You are the only one I can trust.

Adam: Oh, well, good morning, you two. Oh, you look unusually miserable today.

Victoria: Would you shut up, adam?

Nick: Where are we coming from? Sally’s room? Begging her for another chance? When are you gonna let it go?

[ Music begins to play “love like this” b

Adam: I missed you so much. You know, being here with you.

Sally: Yeah. It was just–

Adam: I know. For both of us. It’s not like we were planning for it.

Sally: No, no. Definitely not.

Adam: But for me, it feels right. Meant to be.

Sally: [ Exhales ] Enough.

Adam: Have, uh, either one of you seen or spoken to our father this morning?

Nick: Yeah, we just saw him at the office.

Adam: And how does he seem?

Nick: He’s in and out of his faltering mental state. Today, he seems forgetful.

Adam: Well, whatever is going on with him, it’s clearly not going away.

Nick: You might be right about that.

Adam: I actually spoke with a specialist last night.

Victoria: You spoke to someone without consulting us?

Adam: Yes. Okay? I was worried just like you are.

Nick: Did the doctor have any advice?

Adam: He advised me to have victor meet with him so he can better assess the situation. Now, I think the three of us could make that happen.

Victoria: No. No. It’s not gonna be necessary for you to be involved going forward. We’ll handle everything with our father. He doesn’t trust you. In fact, none of us do.

Victor: Where did you take me? Where are we?

Nate: Uh, the park. You asked to come here.

Victor: Oh. I can’t seem to figure this out.

Nate: Figure what out?

Victor: The moments when everything is very clear and then, suddenly becomes foggy, you know? I mean, moments of clarity and then, I don’t know, it just gone.

Nate: Okay. Okay. We’ll get that sorted. I promise.

[ Victor sighing ]

Victor: One thing I do know, I do know that I’m alone.

Nate: That’s not true. You’re not alone. You have your family.

[ Victor groaning ]

Victor: No. They wanna take everything from me.

Nate: Who?

Victor: My children.

Nate: No, victor. They love you. You–

Victor: They– they wanna take my company from me, my sanity, my autonomy, everything. I mean, victoria is very angry with me.

Nate: Victoria would never do anything against you. She wouldn’t dare attempt a coup by using your condition as a weapon.

Victor: You sure about that?

Nate: Very much so.

Victor: They’re my children. I raised them to be ruthless and cutthroat as I am. Now, you see what I created? Monsters of my own making. Think about that.

Adam: Look, I get why the two of you are trying to shut me out.

Nick: It’s a delicate situation, adam. We have to proceed with caution.

Adam: And don’t you think I know that? Don’t you think I realize the consequences if word got out that our father has this condition?

Victoria: Would you please keep your voice down?

Adam: Okay. I know that you can’t trust me.

Victoria: You’re damn right we don’T.

Adam: And it’s understandable.

Victoria: Good. So then, you’ll back off.

Adam: Okay. I can’t do that because I’m as scared as you are and I’m not gonna sit by and do nothing, okay? I’m victor’s child too.

Nick: Yes, adam. We know that.

Adam: I’m not standing on the sidelines. Or turning a blind eye. I have to do something with or without you.

Victoria: So stupid.

Summer: I do trust you and chelsea.

Chloe: Well, it’s hard to accept that when you’re breathing down our necks.

Summer: This isn’t about you and it’s not about me either. This is about the spring line.

Chloe: Yeah. Which we are doing. I mean– but, it’s right there. You’re just not willing to see it.

Summer: This is a mistake.

Chloe: What?

Summer: This whole thing, the big picture, it’s just– it’s not working. And we are clearly not getting anywhere right now, so let’s take a break.

Chloe: Okay. Wait, hold on. Hold on a sec. I mean, we– we can talk this through a bit more.

Summer: I have calls that I need to make, so let’s wait for chelsea and we can reconvene, but for right now, we’re done.

Kyle: I have thought about starting my own company from time to time.

Mariah: You could totally do it. I believe in you.

Kyle: But I always end up nixing the idea because it just doesn’t feel right.

Mariah: And going back to jabot does.

Kyle: Despite its challenges, yeah. Okay. Look, when I was fired from newman media, victor gave me some advice.

Mariah: Mm. I can’t wait for this.

Kyle: He said I should go back to where I belong, working with my family. And I actually think he’s right.

Mariah: So, you’re gonna base your entire life’s purpose off of something victor told you to do.

Kyle: No. I– I think it’s been brewing in me for a while, but what he said helped clarify it.

Mariah: Enlighten me.

Kyle: Okay. I do get frustrated with my dad, but I can’t let go of the feeling that my place is at jabot. You know, my family’s company, my grandfather’s legacy.

Mariah: I didn’t know that it meant so much to you.

Kyle: Well, I think I’ve always taken it for granted because it’s been a part of my life. I mean, jabot was everything to the abbotts. It’s a part of their identity. It’s a part of me. And I now realize I will do whatever it takes to get back there.

Mariah: Even railroading billy?

Kyle: No, no, no. Don’t put it like that. Look, I deserve my spot, my place and I’m confident that eventually, things will go my way.

Chelsea: You’re concerned about kyle? Why?

Billy: Because he is gunning from my job. He had it before and he wants it back.

Chelsea: Do you think jack would give it to him?

Billy: I think he’s putting jack in a really tough position. I mean, he’s having to choose between his son and his brother. And to be honest, I don’t– I don’t feel too confident about the way he’s leaning.

Chelsea: Jack wouldn’t do that to you, would he?

Billy: He’d be making a mistake if he did. And it would make me question his judgment when it comes to jabot.

Chelsea: Mm-hmm. So, do you still blame diane for that? His blind devotion to her?

Billy: Actually, between jack and diane, she’s been the levelheaded one. And I’m sure she would want her son to work alongside them and she wouldn’t question pushing me aside.

Chelsea: So, you think you’ll be squeezed out?

Billy: Look, I’m not trying to point fingers or lay blame. Jack has had it coming at him from all sides. Started with ashley, then tucker, and now kyle. It’s enough to shake anyone’s judgment.

Chelsea: Mm-hmm. Sounds like jack could really use your leadership skills right about now.

Billy: I’ve been working hard and doing good work, I have to say. I’ve been strong and steady in that c-suite.

Chelsea: And kyle?

Billy: Kyle’s had everything handed to him. He hasn’t had to work for anything in his life. He’s not ready for a leadership role. He hasn’t paid his dues.

Chelsea: So, what’s the solution, hm? What are you gonna do?

Billy: I don’t know. It’s my family company.

Chelsea: Are you sure this is what you really want?

Billy: Yeah, it’s what I want.

Chelsea: Okay. I’m just worried that you’re doing it because you feel like you have to because you’re– you’re scared of feeling like a failure.

Billy: It’s not that. This is what I want. It’s the first time I actually feel like I’m on the right path and I’m gonna do everything I can to stay on it.

Chelsea: Well, then I support you.

Billy: Thank you. It’s nice to have you home.

Chelsea: It’s nice to be home.

Nate: It’s true. You taught your children to be ruthless, to go after what they want. Sometimes, even at the expense of each other. But not you. Never their father.

Victor: Victoria wants power. I took it from her.

Nate: Victoria has accepted her new place as your co-ceo.

Victor: You really believe that?

Nate: Yes.

Victor: Then, there’s adam. You know, adam has resented me ever since he set foot in genoa city. I– I– no matter what I try to placate him, it’s not working.

Nate: It’s possible adam is concerned about you more than you’re allowing yourself to see.

Victor: You know what’s happening? Adam and victoria are trying to take me down and I will do something to stop them.

Nate: What will you do?

Victor: I’m gonna fire their asses. Send them as far away from me and this company as possible. That’s what I’m gonna do.

Nick: I don’t know what to make of dad’s behavior. I wasn’t expecting that.

Victoria: I feel like there are only two explanations for what just happened.

Nick: All right. Care to share?

Victoria: Dad’s explanation to you the other night about his odd behavior it’s just a coverup to hopefully keep us from pursuing this further.

Nick: Meaning there is something wrong with him mentally and he doesn’t want it to get out.

Victoria: That’s one option.

Nick: What’s the other?

Victoria: Dad’s acting like he didn’t tell you that he was faking his illness because he still doesn’t trust me.

Nick: What would be the point of that?

Victoria: His end game has changed. He’s come up with another trap, but this one’s for me.

Adam: Dad? Dad? Hey, dr. Skelton. It’s, uh, adam newman. Hey, thank you for speaking with me last night. Um, I’m gonna try to arrange a meeting with my father today for drinks at society. If I give you the time, do you think that you could, uh, stop by say hello?

Chelsea: [ Gasps ] Hi.

Chloe: Oh, I’m so happy that you’re here.

Chelsea: Oh, I am so happy to see you.

Chloe: I have missed you so much. It’s so good to see you. You look, I mean, amazing. Fabulous. We have a big problem.

Chelsea: Where’s summer?

Chloe: Uh, she had to step out. Um, yeah, we– we– we needed a breather.

Chelsea: A breather? That bad, huh?

Chloe: Yeah. This is turning into a disaster of epic proportions and, um, I mean, I thought that I could get it sorted, but it’s appearing to tear apart at the seams.

Chelsea: Okay. The three of us, we’ll sit down, we will figure out a way to work this out.

Chloe: No, it– it’s not you or me. It’s summer. She is fixated and inflexible. You need to help me calm her down and get her to see that we know better than she does.

Mariah: Well, I have gotta go meet tessa and aria for the big appointment.

Kyle: Keep me posted on what happens.

Mariah: Yeah. I want you to do the same, okay? I really hope everything works out with jabot. Just a word of advice. Proceed with caution.

Kyle: Good luck. Send tessa my love and I’ll see you later.

Mariah: Mwah!

Kyle: Billy, what’s going on?

Billy: I know what you’re up to, kyle. So, we’re gonna clear the air once and for all.

Lily: Yeah, so what happened with aunt mamie that you wanted to talk about?

Nate: Well, I’ve had a couple of encounters with her lately, and they keep setting off alarms for me.

Devon: Alarms about what?

Nate: For starters, she’s still trying to get me to leave newman and join the two of you at chancellor-winters.

Devon: So, she’s being persistent.

Lily: Well, and presumptuous. I mean, she has no say in that. Not that we wouldn’t discuss it maybe in the future, but this is not her company.

Nate: I am well aware of that.

Lily: Well, is she?

Nate: I didn’t think much of it at first. Figured it was just wishful thinking on her part, you know, all the family working together. But then I found out something about aunt mamie that changes the whole ballgame, and it isn’t good.

Ashley: I’m so glad you’re here.

Mamie: And I’m so glad you’re back.

Ashley: No, you don’t understand. It makes my heart happy to see you in our house, mamie.

Mamie: Also, the fact that we’re away from the prying eyes of genoa city.

Ashley: Yeah, you’re not wrong about that. Come sit down. Have some coffee.

Mamie: [Chuckles] How are you, my girl?

Ashley: [Sighs] I’m okay. I’m getting used to, uh, being gawked at as the woman who lived happily ever after for about a week and a half.

Mamie: [Chuckles] That is so, so wrong in so many ways.

Ashley: Nothing I can’t handle.

Mamie: So, diane and jack– they’re at the office?

Ashley: Yeah, it’s just the two of us.

Mamie: Good, ’cause we have a lot of catching up to do.

Ashley: Oh, listen, we do, and first of all, I want to hear about his mysterious move you made regarding chancellor-winters.

Mamie: [Laughs]

Ashley: Very dramatic. Completely unexpected.

Mamie: Well, that was the whole idea. Expect the unexpected when miss M. Is back in town.

Ashley: So you pulled that off.

Mamie: [Chuckles] Well, I was just ready to make a change, you know, to do something different. And the only way to really do that best is with one’s family, right?

Ashley: Mm. I have so much respect for you. You’re so good at that. You’re so good at balancing your work life and your home life. I mean, I’m just not good at it, mamie.

Mamie: You know, I didn’t know that much about tucker mccall, other than that he was katherine chancellor’s son. I know that jack didn’t like him very much. I just never understood why.

Ashley: Well, jack’s just being jack and protective of me and jabot, and I’m not sure in what order.

Mamie: Oh, now, now. Jack adores you.

Ashley: Oh, I know. I like him, too, most of the time.

Mamie: Well, I do have to say, though, when I did see you and tucker together at the bicentennial gala, I sensed that there was a connection between you.

Ashley: There was.

Mamie: And then there wasn’T.

Ashley: Yeah, then there wasn’T.

Mamie: So now tucker’s out for blood. That’s what jack claims. And now he wants revenge against the abbotts because of whatever happened between the two… oh, come on. Is any of this true?

Ashley: I think the bigger question here that you’re asking is how could I have been so wrong about that man?

Billy: Hey.

Jack: Hey.

Billy: I got your text. What’s going on?

Jack: Ashley paid a visit to tucker.

Billy: Well, we knew that was only a matter of time. How did it go?

Jack: Well, she didn’t spare me too many details, but she did say this is just the first step.

Billy: So, not very good.

Jack: Well, what that means is that she is still determined to reconnect with tim, or pretend to, in order to find out what he has planned for us.

Billy: Look, maybe she’ll pull this off.

Jack: Maybe she won’T.

Billy: Here’s your problem, jack. You don’t have enough faith in anyone that isn’t named diane.

Jack: Okay, I’m gonna pretend you didn’t say that.

Billy: I’m just saying. Okay? Maybe we should give our sister the benefit of the doubt.

Jack: He is unhinged, he is dangerous, and there’s no telling what he will do when he finds out she is playing him.

Tucker: I’m sorry. I’m not buying it.

Kyle: What do you think I’m selling?

Tucker: A cynic might say your soul, but let’s just leave it at you betraying your family to come on board with us.

Kyle: This is a business transaction. I help you take control of jabot. You give me what I want. It’s simple as that.

Tucker: Ah, ah. You might be kidding yourself, but you’re not kidding me.

Kyle: I’m not trying to kid anyone. You offered this to me.

Tucker: No, audra offered it to you without my knowledge. I would have told her, bad idea, because blood is always thicker than water when it comes to the abbotts. Trust me, I know. So, I’m sitting there. I just don’t know that this isn’t some kind of trap. I just don’t know that you’re… you’re not gonna run along to jack at some point with my plans. This isn’t gonna work.

Kyle: Tucker. Tucker. Tucker. You’re making a big mistake.

Tucker: It’s not a mistake, son. It’s self-preservation, pure and simple.

Kyle: First of all, I’m not your son. And second, if you believe I have any professional allegiance to my father, then you haven’t been listening. He hasn’t shown me any, so why would I be loyal to him?

Tucker: Because he’s your father, and he’s given you everything you have, and I’m not sure I believe that you’d be willing to just blow that up when the time comes.

Kyle: Watch me light a match.

Tucker: What’s your take on this?

Audra: Well, I think you already know that, or the three of us wouldn’t be here talking right now.

Tucker: And no other vested interest?

Audra: Look, you’ll either agree to it, or you won’t, tucker.

Tucker: All right. Sell me.

Kyle: Haven’t I been doing that?

Tucker: Hardly.

Kyle: I only want what’s coming to me. I’m sure you can appreciate that desire.

Tucker: Yeah, I can, but you and i are different animals. My hands are already stained.

Kyle: Oh, you want motive? Okay, I’ll give you motive. I left my position as co-ceo of jabot to run marchetti, but my father forced me out when my marriage fell apart. But he kept my ex on board and then offered me some low-level B.S. Position at jabot as a consolation prize.

Tucker: Oh. You’re gonna have me crying.

Kyle: It doesn’t stop there. He now has billy, a proven screw-up, as his second in command, and he doesn’t feel inclined to change things even if billy screws up pretty badly.

Tucker: You know, billy was also willing to sell out his family in exchange for more control.

Kyle: You offered him that?

Tucker: He ended up choking.

Kyle: Well, billy’s weak. I’m not going to choke, and I’m tired of waiting. I’m tired of my family offering me crumbs and expecting me to take it with a smile. I want what is rightfully mine, and I will do… anything, anything to get it.

Billy: Look, as someone who tried to con tucker not that long ago, I actually appreciate our sister’s instincts.

Jack: Well, apparently, you’re not as close to tucker as ashley was.

Billy: I think that’s more obvious.

Jack: Well, just imagine what he would do to you, and then multiply that times a thousand. That’s the hell he would put her through if he found out she was the one conning him.

Billy: Okay, jack, I get that, all right? It’s a risk. But we’re talking about ashley here. When has anyone ever succeeded in telling her what to do?

Jack: Oh, never.

Billy: Exactly. And you know what? Right now I think we should trust her instincts about tucker. It took her a while, but she did finally wise up to who he really is.

Jack: Ordinarily, I would agree with you if she hadn’t fallen for him in the first place. Twice she has let him into her life, into her heart. Twice he has broken it. So, no, I would say our sister does not see clearly when it comes to tucker mccall.

Mamie: I’m so sorry, ashley.

Ashley: Why are you sorry?

Mamie: For bringing up a subject that is very painful.

Ashley: It’s okay. I mean, obviously, it’s not like I’ve forgotten it happened.

Mamie: Well, we can talk about something else. Anything else.

Ashley: No, not at all. Um… you know, frankly, I wasn’t completely blameless when it came to our marriage ending.

Mamie: How so?

Ashley: Tucker and i were starting a company together, maybe. I mean, plans were well underway. I mean, details were worked out, but when push came to shove, I couldn’t go through with it. I just found it much harder to walk away from my family and from my father’s legacy than I thought it would be.

Mamie: [Scoffs] You couldn’t give up jabot.

Ashley: Right. I know, but, um…tucker found that very upsetting. I get that. He thought that our marriage meant that we were in a partnership, a true partnership in every way, that I was putting him above everyone and everything else. So, that when I changed my mind, he felt like I had ripped the rug out from under his world, and… it got intense.

Mamie: Intense? What? What do you mean by intense?

Ashley: Tucker got really angry. I mean… I’ve never seen him that angry before in all the years I’ve known him, with everything we’ve been through, never. His eyes got really cold and really dark.

[Sobs] He was in this…rage. He just erupted into this rage, and I had to get away from him.

Mamie: Wait a minute. Are you telling me that he frightened you?

Ashley: Yeah. He terrified me.

Mamie: Uh, what? [Scoffs] Oh, my god. Ashley, I had no idea.

Ashley: Well, mamie, it’s like I said. I–

Mamie: No.

Ashley: From his perspective, I can understand–

Mamie: No! No, ashley. Don’t make excuses to me about that man. Look, it doesn’t matter what you did to him. That kind of behavior is unacceptable.

Devon: So, tucker and mamie?

Nate: That’s what it looks like.

Lily: And how did you find out about this?

Nate: Uh, she got a text from him when I was meeting with her, and it said, “we should connect this afternoon.”

Devon: Does she know you saw it?

Nate: I don’t think so. But she sure put away that phone pretty fast.

Devon: [Sighs] So, then tucker just flat out lied to me ’cause he said he had no interest in chancellor-winters.

Nate: I mean, look, this could just be a simple meeting. Maybe we shouldn’t jump to conclusions that quickly.

Devon: If it was a simple meeting, why’d she hide the phone?

Lily: Yeah, I mean, clearly, you feel the same way. Otherwise, you wouldn’t have told us. I mean, if you think about it, it makes sense, right? Things blow up with ashley, and tucker’s gone to his original plan of coming after our company.

Nate: Aunt mamie wouldn’t do that to you.

Lily: She would do it to jill in a heartbeat.

Devon: It’s true.

Lily: Well, look, let’s just assume that the company is under attack, and we have to defend it, because, I mean, tucker is swimming in capital now. He has no debt, no business with ashley, so he’s, you know, shifted course and using mamie as his way in.

Devon: [Groans]

Lily: Where are you going?

Devon: Oh, I’m gonna get the answers from the man himself.

Well, there’s no guarantee he’s going to tell you the truth.

Well, then I’ll remind him of the stakes of lying to me.

Tucker: That was a powerful statement, kyle.

Kyle: Well, if my father can’t see my worth at jabot, I’m ready to make a move.

Tucker: Over to us?

Kyle: That’s right.

Tucker: The frustrated son trying to prove his mettle to the father who doesn’t think he’s ready.

Kyle: Who will never think I’m ready.

Tucker: Never’s a long time, kyle, and sometimes the anger of the moment can turn on a dime as soon as the opportunity presents itself.

Kyle: What are you talking about?

Tucker: How about this scenario? A loyal son… sells yours truly down the river to impress jack enough to give him his old position back. Yeah, it has a certain je ne sais quoi, wouldn’t you say?

Kyle: When I make a commitment, I stick to it.

Tucker: It’s funny. That’s exactly what your uncle billy said when he was thinking about jumping ship and taking jack down.

Kyle: I’ll tell you again, I am not billy in any way, shape, or form. He does things out of desperation. I operate with logic and opportunity. Look, tucker, there is a vacuum at the top of jabot, and I intend to fill it. Trust me, I’ll know what to do when I get there.

Tucker: That remains to be seen, doesn’t it? Words are cheap.

Kyle: Not if they’re the right words.

Tucker: I’m a little more action-oriented.

Billy: Thank you. Look, the way I see it, third time’s a charm.

Jack: Well, where tucker and ashley are concerned?

Billy: Well, as far as her keeping her eyes wide open about him, yeah.

Jack: So you think we ought to let her go ahead with this plan of hers?

Billy: Maybe, just maybe, she might find something out that can be useful to us to keep him in check.

Jack: That would be huge.

Billy: Yeah, it would be. And, you know, right now, clearly, she wants to be on our side, jack. That’s a good thing, okay? I say we let her.

Jack: I’m not sure we have too many choices.

Billy: No, I don’t see any.

Jack: No, ashley’s going to do exactly what she wants to do.

Billy: And then there’s that. You all right?

Jack: Yeah, yeah, I’m fine. Why do you ask?

Billy: Seems like there’s something else on your mind.

Jack: [Sighs heavily] Yeah, actually, there is.

Billy: Okay, let’s hear it.

Jack: For the last… well, for some time now, diane and I have been trying to convince kyle to come back to jabot now that he’s left newman media. I even offered him the coo position.

Billy: [Chuckles nervously] That’s a generous offer.

Jack: Yeah, I kind of thought so, too. He turned me down. He said he would come back on one condition.

Billy: Let me guess. He wants my job.

Jack: [Sighs]

Jack: Look, I did not suggest this

Jack: Look, I did not suggest this or in any way encourage it.

Billy: But you’ve considered kyle as my replacement.

Jack: I would be lying if I said no.

Billy: Appreciate you being honest with me.

Jack: Look, I’m in a very difficult place here. I’m stuck right in the middle. There’s nothing in the world I would want more than to have my son come back where he belongs.

Billy: Yeah, I can understand that, jack. I can even admire it. Of course you’d want kyle to work alongside you with the family company. It just… it’s a little hard to swallow knowing it would be at my expense.

Jack: No, nothing has been decided.

Billy: Okay, that does not give me a lot of confidence here, especially ’cause I know through your eyes, kyle is higher on the abbott family pecking order than dear billy.

Jack: There is no pecking order. No decisions would be made except for by merit, or, look, whoever’s best for the job. That’s all that counts.

Billy: Is that right? Okay. So, let’s–let’s, uh, let’s talk about that for a second. Let’s forget about family. Kyle had the job. He walked away.

Jack: Well, he moved over to marchetti, where he learned–

Billy: Everything kyle has had has been handed to him by the family or through the family connections. Why don’t you let him work his way up? Let him pay his dues?

Jack: [Scoffs]

Billy: I’m sorry, what’s–what’s that?

Jack: I find no small amount of irony in those words, coming from you.

Billy: Oh, yeah? How do you figure?

Jack: You honestly think you paid your dues, billy?

Kyle: You–you want action? What do I need to do to prove to you that I’m serious? A test? Make up some kind of hurdle for me to clear? Look, tucker, I will do whatever is necessary to erase the doubts in your mind that I am not 100% on board.

Tucker: Hmm. Yeah, audra does tell me that you’re tenacious. I like that.

Kyle: And I will be just as tenacious when audra and i take jabot to the next level, and all you need to do is sit back and count your returns.

Tucker: [Scoffs] I’m a little more hands-on than that, but I do appreciate it when people who work for me take charge.

Kyle: Good. Now, I have to ask you a question.

Tucker: Is that right? What’s that?

Kyle: Now that ashley’s back in town, how does that affect your plans?

Tucker: [Scoffs]

Not that it’s any of your business, but not at all. She and I are no longer together.

Kyle: Yeah. You see, you just reminded me a few minutes ago that sometimes anger can turn on a dime. So I need to know, is there any chance you and ashley are getting back together? Or is there a chance that she still has some kind of influence over you? Because I’m not about to risk everything I have just for you to suddenly fall in love again and pull the plug.

Mamie: Now I can see why jack thinks that tucker is trouble!

Ashley: Mamie, okay. I get it. Jack sees everything in black and white, though. All right? Tucker’s not that. He’s gray. It’s very complicated.

Mamie: Are you telling me you still have a soft spot for this guy?

Ashley: I can’t have a soft spot for him. I know that, not after what happened. But I know tucker deeply. That makes him feel vulnerable. He doesn’t like it. He lashes out.

Mamie: At whatever is in front of him.

Ashley: Or makes him feel that way. That would be me.

Mamie: Honey… you need to run for the hills.

Ashley: I tried that. I did, and it didn’t work. I realized I had to come back and face things head on.

Mamie: By doing what?

Ashley: Well, I’m just never gonna let anybody hurt me, my family, or jabot ever again. That’s one promise I will never break.

Mamie: Good for you, my girl, because family must always come first.

Ashley: That’s right.

Mamie: Okay?

Ashley: Always. I’m glad you’re back.

Mamie: Hmm.

Billy: I just can’t believe you did that.

Jack: Did what?

Billy: You compared me to kyle. It’s insulting.

Jack: Look, all I’m saying–

Billy: You wanna talk about paying dues? You want to– you want to compare my résumé to your son’s? I worked my ass off to get to where I am at jabot, and that’s with you watching my every step, thinking that I’m gonna screw up again.

Jack: Wait, that’s an exaggeration.

Billy: No, it’s not at all. It’s felt like I’ve been on probation ever since I came back.

Jack: And you think that came out of nowhere? That I could count on you all the time? Come on.

Billy: Now you’re insulting me. Good. At least you’ll admit it.

Jack: Billy, you’re a loose cannon sometimes. Even now, even you’ll admit that.

Billy: No, i will admit that. Actually, jack, I think that’s a good thing. And when I do make a mistake, I take accountability for myself, unlike your son, who I’m guessing feels like he should be handed the throne because of his birthright.

Jack: Nothing’s being handed to kyle. Whatever he gets, whether it’s here or anywhere else, he’s going to earn it.

Billy: Then why are we having this conversation? It’s like you pitted me against him in some collision course that I’m almost guaranteed to lose.

Jack: That’s not fair.

Billy: Jack, he’s your son. He’s diane’s son. Okay? Of course you both want him to succeed at jabot and paint this beautiful family portrait, but it’s not fair. It’s not fair to me, it’s not fair to kyle, and it’s not fair to jabot, because kyle is not ready.

Tucker: Don’t worry yourself about ashley, kyle. She’s of no importance here.

Kyle: I just don’t wanna be blindsided. I’m risking a lot.

Tucker: Yeah, you’re gonna be rewarded if you can convince me that you can be trusted.

Kyle: I’ll say it again. Test me.

[Pounding on door]

Tucker: Hey.

Devon: Hey.

Tucker: Come on in.

Devon: I hope I’m not interrupting anything.

Tucker: No, no, they were just leaving. Isn’t that right?

Kyle: See you later.

Tucker: See you.

Devon: Bye.

Audra: Bye.

Devon: What was that all about?

Tucker: Uh, they’ve been seeing each other.

Devon: Mm. What they doing in your room? Giving them relationship advice?

Tucker: [Chuckles] No, no, no, I was just actually asking kyle if he knew where ashley’s head is these days. She’s back from paris.

Devon: I did not know that. Have you spoken to her?

Tucker: [Sighs] Can we not get into that right now?

Devon: Sure. Sure. I actually have some other things on my mind, too.

Tucker: Oh?

Devon: Yeah. I’m gonna ask you a question, and this is gonna be the last time I ask it. What is your connection to mamie? And this time, please don’t lie to me.

Devon: Nate saw a text that you sent mamie asking her to come and meet you.

Tucker: Yeah, yeah, I sent her a text. Um, as a matter of fact, I’m expecting her any minute.

Devon: What are you meeting about?

Tucker: You, actually.

Devon: Really?

Tucker: Yeah. I was hoping talking to her might help fix… the problem between you and me, whatever it is, so the gap between us doesn’t get any wider than it is.

Devon: So, you’re gonna talk about me? You have no other topics to discuss?

Tucker: What other topics would I discuss?

Devon: You know, it doesn’t even matter, ’cause…you don’t understand that the only thing I want is to be able to trust what comes out of your mouth.

Tucker: You can.

Devon: I can?

Tucker: I–yes, you can. I’m telling you the truth. My only interest in your aunt mamie is you.

Devon: She’s not even my aunt.

Tucker: Well…

Devon: I was adopted in that family. She just got back to town. She doesn’t know me, okay? And even if she did, you’ve lied about being in contact with her, which means I can’t believe anything you say to me moving forward.

Tucker: Where is this all coming from?

Devon: What do you mean, where is it coming from, tucker? We literally just had a conversation about this the last time we met up. Did you forget already? This is coming from years of me trying to give you the benefit of the doubt, and every single damn time, you show me exactly who you really are.

Tucker: I’m your father, and I love you. That’s who I am.

Devon: Yeah?

Tucker: Yeah.

Devon: You love me?

Tucker: Yeah.

Devon: That’s who you are. You know who else you are? You’re a liar… half the time. And you’re also someone who use anything and anybody to get what you want in life, whether it’s your family or whether it’s people you claim to care about, and that’s just the way it is. So…can you at least leave mamie out of whatever you have going on? ‘Cause she’s innocent, and I actually believe that her intentions are sincere.

[Door slams] Aunt mamie. Hi.

Mamie: [Chuckles] Devon.

Devon: How you doing?

Mamie: What are you doing here?

Devon: I was upstairs talking to tucker because I know that the two of you were meeting today.

Mamie: Oh.

Devon: Yeah. And I imagine it has something to do with you investing in chancellor-winters, because tucker is katherine’s son. Am I right?

Mamie: Your dad tucker and i have had some discussions.And i have had some discussions. His interest in chancellor-winters is because of you.

Devon: Yeah, sure. Um… let me be the one to tell you. Don’t trust him at all. Anything that he says to you or promises you is going to be a lie, and it’s for his own agenda, ’cause he–he truly doesn’t care about you or me or this company. He cares about himself.

Mamie: I’m beginning to sense that.

Devon: Well, I’m happy to hear that. I just wish it didn’t take me so long. I’ll see you.

Audra: You handled tucker well. You know, you didn’t let him intimidate you. You brought up ashley, which threw him off a little bit, but you didn’t back down, and he respects that.

Kyle: Yeah, thanks to devon’s arrival, I still don’t know what tucker wants or expects of me.

Audra: He will soon enough.

Kyle: Yeah, well, whatever it is, it’s probably not gonna be pretty, and it’s not gonna be easy, and it will involve some betrayal of my family.

Audra: Can we lose the word “betrayal”? You know, you said it yourself. This is business, and yes, tucker will have a test for you. You know, you asked him for one. Isn’t that why you reached out to me– to set up this meeting in the first place?

Kyle: Yeah.

Audra: Yeah, well, tucker wasn’t just gonna accept your word for it. These are big stakes, kyle. You’re either in or you’re out.

Mamie: My plans have changed, tucker.

Tucker: How so?

Mamie: I’ve decided I no longer need your help with chancellor-winters.

Tucker: Really? What’s changed your mind?

Mamie: A very revealing discussion with ashley.

Tucker: And?

Mamie: I’m learning things about you that, frankly, I cannot tolerate.

Tucker: And you just decided to take her word for it?

Mamie: I also just spoke with devon.

Tucker: Then you must know I’m also a liar. Maybe I’m the devil himself.

Mamie: No, I’m not afraid of the devil. You, mr. Mccall, are something else entirely. My goal of bringing control of chancellor-winters back to my family is pure. I have no other agenda. But your motives, on the other hand, are not quite as noble, are they?

Tucker: Why should i plead my case to you now when you’ve already judged and condemned me?

Mamie: I trusted you to begin with, because you were katherine’s son.

Tucker: No, you trusted me, mamie, because I’m rich and have a ruthless reputation, and you were desperate to be rid of jill abbott. So, here’s a question. How do you expect to do that without me?

Kyle: Oh, I’m still in.

Audra: That’s good to know. You had me worried there for a second. You know, I just thought of something. What would you do if your dad surprised you by agreeing to give you billy’s job?

Kyle: Yeah, that’s not gonna happen.

Audra: Hypothetically.

Kyle: Well, then I would take it, obviously. I mean, I did put the ultimatum out there.

Audra: Hmm. So, then what would happen to our little alliance?

Kyle: Gone.

Audra: Oh.

Kyle: You’d be our adversary, and I would have to destroy you.

Audra: Ouch. [Laughs]

Kyle: [Laughs]

Audra: Well, then let’s keep hoping your father continues to let you down. Come here.

Kyle: Where are we going?

Audra: Mm.

Jack: Billy, I’m telling you, I asked kyle what it would take to lure him back to jabot. That is the truth.

Billy: Well, I guess now I know what direction he’s headed– straight after my job.

Jack: He gave me an honest answer. I can’t fault him for that.

Billy: Yeah. Kyle’s an ambitious young man, isn’t he? Well, good for him. But it’s you, jack. You’re the one that invited him back to jabot. And is that to keep an eye on me, maybe? Okay, well, message received, loud and clear. But let me tell you this. If you replace me, it’s not gonna be because I screwed up. That’s not gonna happen. I’m holding on to this job… for many reasons, one of them being because I deserve it, and I’m gonna fight like hell to keep it. Damn straight about that.

Jack: [Sighs]

[Sighs]

[Knock on door]

Lily: Hey. How’d it go?

Devon: It went about as well as I thought it would go.

Lily: Okay, so what did tucker say about mamie?

Devon: He said that he was meeting mamie to talk about me and get advice on how to fix the tension between us.

Lily: I mean, that could be true.

Devon: You think it’s true? Yeah?

Lily: Well, maybe. Maybe there is a part of him that wants to be closer to you.

Devon: Then why does he keep sabotaging our relationship? Every time I let my guard down and consider letting him in my life, he takes advantage, like he’s doing right now.

Lily: So, did you eventually get the truth out of him?

Devon: Who knows what I got out of him? I never know. I do think that this is about chancellor-winters, and I do think that he’s plotting something.

Tucker: Let’s not forget, I’m the rightful heir to chancellor.

Mamie: [Chuckles] Oh, yes, we know. You will always be katherine’s son. But she didn’t leave the company to you now, did she, tucker?

Tucker: No, she left it to victor newman. You wanna hand it back to him?

Mamie: Hmph.

Tucker: I have– I have no interest in running chancellor-winters. I wanna let devon do that, and I have no qualms with lily’s involvement. But none of that is going to happen–none of it, as long as jill abbott is still in the picture.

Mamie: Hmph. I’m well aware of that.

Tucker: Right, so you and i have a vested interest in seeing her removed. And you know I’m the only one who can make that happen.

Mamie: [Laughs] I don’t think so.

Tucker: What does that mean?

Mamie: It means you are bad news, tucker. I’m gonna take my chances elsewhere. I really regret that i trusted you in the first place.

Victor: And by the way, not a word of this to adam, all right? And if any of the doctors should call you back, tell them to contact you on your cell phone, not the regular landline, not by email. ‘Cause if adam picks up on any of this, it’ll be disastrous.

Nate: You’re that suspicious?

Victor: Well, can you blame me? I bet you adam is smelling the blood in the water already. And by the way, this conversation stays between us. You and me. Or else.

Mamie: Well, good morning, nephew.

Nate: Aunt mamie. Good morning.

Mamie: Oh, that’s a touch blase. May I join you or would you rather be alone?

Nate: No, no. Come, come join me.

Mamie: Well, thank you. Now, why are you looking like that?

[ Nate sighing ]

Nate: Nothing new. Just a– another conflict surfacing at newman.

Mamie: Mm-hmm. Well, I know I should say that I’m sorry, but neither one of us is going to believe that. The way I see it, you have two choices. You can keep drowning in that newman turmoil or you can realize that there is more to life than that and just move on.

Jack: Good morning.

Diane: Mm. Morning. Hey.

Jack: You were up early. Did you maybe see ashley?

Diane: Uh, no. Mrs. Martinez says she left a while ago.

Jack: Yeah. Did she say where my sister was off to?

Diane: No. And you know mrs. Martinez, she didn’t think it was her business. She just said that ashley had some loose ends to tie up and she wasn’t sure when she’d be back.

Jack: Well, you know what that means.

Diane: Yeah, I’m afraid I do.

Jack: I’m afraid the advice I gave her about staying away from tucker didn’t sink in. Damn it. They are probably together right now.

[ Knocking on door ]

Nate: I know you’d love nothing more than to lure me away from newman enterprises.

Mamie: With good reason.

Nate: But this would be a terrible time for me to leave right now.

Mamie: Terrible for whom? Your colleagues or for you? Believe me, they are thinking about themselves, so you should only be thinking about you.

Nate: I can’t do that to victoria, aunt mamie. I can’t leave her in the lurch.

Mamie: Oh, my. It sounds like things are getting ugly indeed.

Nate: Nice try. But I’m not gonna share any details, so you might as well stop snooping.

Mamie: Oh, come on. You can’t blame your auntie for trying.

[ Jack huffing ]

Jack: Voicemail again. Unbelievable.

Diane: Jack, you’ve gotta let this go. If ashley feels like this is something she needs to do, then there’s nothing you can do to stop her.

Jack: I know you’re right, but we just got her back. The idea of her going into the lion’s den to try to trick tucker into a truce. Is it any wonder why I worry about that?

Diane: I understand. And I– all right, I cannot believe I’m about to defend her, but you and billy just tried to do exactly the same thing. Why is it okay for the two of you and not for her?

Jack: Billy and I haven’t married him twice.

Diane: Yes, there’s that. Which means that ashley knows tucker probably better than anyone else does. So, if anyone has a chance of getting through to him, it’s your sister.

[ Jack exhaling ]

Tucker: Come in. When did you get back?

Ashley: Oh, boy. Does it really matter?

Tucker: How was your flight?

Ashley: Please don’T. I can’t take the small talk.

Tucker: Okay. Well, you have rejected every effort I’ve made to reconnect and talk things out so far, so I assume you must have something very pertinent and, uh, important on your mind.

Ashley: I think it’s important, yeah.

Tucker: Well, don’t tell me, let me guess. You’d like to know what nefarious scheme I have plotted against your family, right? I can clear that up for you right now. None. And I made that clear to jack as well.

Ashley: Okay.

Tucker: Okay.

Ashley: I hope it’s true.

Tucker: So, are you here to try to chase me out of town? Jack and billy already tried and failed. Pathetically, I might add.

Ashley: Um, why don’t you just shut up and I’ll tell you why I’m here tucker.

Tucker: Oh, yes, ma’am.

[ Ashley sighing ]

Ashley: I’m sorry.

Nate: Well, you never told me what exactly you havcellor-winters.

Mamie: Nate, all snooping aside…

Nate: For how long exactly?

[ Mamie scoffing ]

Mamie: Some exciting things are about to happen over at chancellor-winters. This would be the perfect time for you to get in on the action. Do you really want to miss out on that so that you can stick around when things seem to be making you pretty unhappy?

Nate: I never said I was unhappy and you seem to be glossing over some details.

Mamie: How so?

Nate: Well, you never told me what exactly you have planned for chancellor-winters. And why you think it’s gonna make jill’s head explode.

Mamie: All in good time, nephew. All in good time.

Nate: See, the more you tease and deflect, the more I begin to suspect you have some kind of coup in the works. And let me tell you right now, that would be a monumentally bad idea.

Tucker: Yeah, I wish I could believe your apology, but unfortunately, I don’T.

Ashley: I didn’t think it was gonna be easy.

Tucker: That’s the problem. It seems a little too easy. You want some coffee?

Ashley: Sure. I’d love a cup.

Tucker: Because, uh, I texted you recently and I asked you if there was any way back from where we are and you responded with a very emphatic no. So, what happened? Did you have some kind of change of heart over boston or cincinnati on the flight home?

Ashley: Not really a change of heart. Maybe I just started listening to my heart.

Tucker: Oh, yeah. Wouldn’t that be peachy? Except I see right through you, ashley. You’re hoping I will let my guard down.

Ashley: Yeah, well, jack said you were gonna react like this.

Tucker: Jack said? Ha. Oh, you gotta love the irony.

Ashley: Yeah. Actually, I don’t love anything about this. Not even a little bit. It’s a struggle.

Tucker: Okay. Well, just for kicks, let’s pretend I did believe your apology. What would this I’m sorry of yours actually look like?

Jack: You’re not wrong. Ashley knows tucker better than any of us ever will, as much as it sickens me to say that.

Diane: Well, then you’re going to have to trust that she knows how to handle him.

Jack: How can I do that when all he has done is manipulate her and terrify her?

Diane: I know. And you’ve done your best to remind ashley of that. She’s a grown woman, jack. These are her choices, not yours.

Jack: I know. I know. I just hate the idea of her being anywhere around that low-life son of a bitch. After everything he’s done to her, everything he’s done to all of us. Hey.

Diane: Morning.

Jack: Where you off to?

Kyle: Harrison’s got a day off from school, so I thought I’d take him to the park for some soccer and one of those strawberry ice cream sandwiches he thinks we should have every night for dinner instead of vegetables. Oh, um, and linda is gonna pick him up from the park since I am headed from there to a meeting at a prospective job.

Diane: A prospective job? What is it?

Jack: Working for whom? Anyone we know?

Kyle: Um, yeah, it’s nothing solid yet and I don’t want to jinx my chances by talking about it.

Jack: I wish I could find some way to convince you to stop looking outside the family and come back to jabot.

Diane: That makes two of us.

Kyle: You can make that happen right now. All you have to do is replace billy with me. So, if you’re ready to do that, I will cancel my meeting in the blink of an eye.

Jack: I’ll tell you what. I’ve been thinking about this. I am willing to offer you the coo position at jabot, effective immediately.

Kyle: I don’t want the coo position. It’s an insult and a demotion. I want my old job back. Look, dad, it’s this simple. I earned it. I deserve it. You want me to come back? I would love to come back. But under that one condition. So, what’s it gonna be? Yes or no? All righty then, enough said. Thanks anyway, dad.

Diane: I understand your dilemma. I do.

Jack: But?

Diane: But kyle’s right. Coo is a demotion. It’s a token position without any power. If you ask me, the right thing to do is to get rid of billy before he harms the company and bring kyle back as co-ceo.

[ Jack sighing ] When my doctor gave me

Jack: I understand the instinct to bring kyle back to replace billy at jabot, but I’ve said it before, the thought of what that would do to my brother, mentally and emotionally, it scares me. Could send him into another self-destructive tailspin and I’d be responsible this time.

Diane: If billy is that fragile, then he shouldn’t be running a company.

Jack: Jabot is not just my legacy. It’s billy’s too.

Diane: And kyle’S.

Jack: Yes. And kyle’S. Kyle has every right that billy and I have to work in the family company, but… he’s the younger generation.

Diane: That’s right. To move forward. He’s done the work. He’s proven himself. You know that.

Jack: Yeah. Look, I want to do the right thing. I haven’t figured out what that is yet.

Diane: Well, do you want to hear another possibility?

Jack: God, yes, please.

Diane: You could step down and let kyle and billy run jabot together. I mean, think about it. You’d be ceo emeritus. You wouldn’t have to think about running a corporation anymore. You and I, hey, we could do all the things that we’ve fantasized about since we’ve gotten back together. We could have dinner in monaco, wake up in milan. We can fly harrison into the alps to go skiing.

Jack: Now, you’re bringing harrison in. You don’t fight fair.

Diane: I know. Is it working?

Jack: It’s food for thought, yeah. Actually, off the top of my head, I only see one downside.

Diane: And what is that?

Jack: Well, with kyle and billy running jabot, how long do you think it’ll be ’til they’re both ready to kill each other?

[ Kyle laughing ]

Kyle: Why on earth would I consider joining forces with tucker mccall?

Audra: Because one way or another, he will get his hands on jabot.

Kyle: What did tucker offer you?

Audra: The top job.

Kyle: Figures.

Audra: And you running it with me. Okay, tucker prefers to stay on the sidelines. Okay, he wouldn’t be involved in the day-to-day. Hey, we could run jabot the way it should be run.

Kyle: And all I would have to do is betray my mother and father.

Audra: Look, all I’m asking you to do is to think about yourself for a change. You know, what’s best for kyle? Instead of settling for whatever crumbs your family throws at you. Your father, he had his success, a great career, okay? Now– now, would it really be the end of the world for him to step back and see his son take the reins? Yeah. Isn’t that how family dynasties survive?

Kyle: No, no, no. What you’re proposing will blow up our family dynasty.

Audra: Not if you were on board. Not if you and I took over that family business and made it vital and exciting again.

Kyle: You’re not family.

Audra: Well, you know, jack clearly doesn’t want to give you the chance. Tucker and I can. And it would be the mistake of a lifetime if you turned it down. So, kyle, are you ready to sit in that jabot co-ceo chair you deserve?

Kyle: I am tired of being pushed to the side. Treated like jabot isn’t my birthright just as much as it is my father’s and my uncle’S. I’m going to take control of my future by helping you and tucker take control of jabot. Oh. Heads up, harrison. Oh, ah, my fault, bad throw.

[ Kyle laughing ]

Audra: That boy’s got talent. Much like his father.

Kyle: Hold that thought.

Audra: Hm.

Kyle: Hm.

Audra: Consider it held.

Kyle: So, am I still meeting with tucker today?

Audra: Yeah. Last I heard. You know, I– I called him earlier, but it went straight to voicemail.

Kyle: So, I should assume it’s a go, unless I hear otherwise from you, right?

Audra: Yeah, probably. Possibly, maybe, or not.

Kyle: Is there a problem I should know about?

Audra: Well, you know, it’s tucker, and, uh, frankly he doesn’t trust you.

Kyle: Well, I can’t blame him. I am an abbott after all. What can I do to change his mind?

Audra: Well, bearing in mind that we are dealing with tucker mccall, you know, he wants to put you up to some loyalty test.

Kyle: Okay. What kind of test?

Audra: That’s to be determined.

Ashley: Well, tucker, I guess I was kind of hoping we could figure out the I’m sorry part together.

Tucker: You must have some idea or two in mind. No? Okay, how about this? Let’s just hit the rewind button, ashley. And– and transport ourselves back to paris on our honeymoon. And be there the way it was before you yanked my world apart and just forget about the fight. And proceed from there. Can we do that? Could you?

Ashley: Not after what happened.

Tucker: No, yeah. Yeah, I figured.

Ashley: And I’m not turning my back on jabot. That hasn’t changed.

Tucker: Oh, absolutely not. You made that perfectly clear in paris. And you made it perfectly clear that the company we spent months planning is never gonna happen also.

Ashley: That’s true.

Tucker: So, you’re not sorry that you couldn’t possibly exist without jabot? And you’re not sorry that you took a wrecking ball to our company? What exactly are you sorry about?

Ashley: Can we just try to be civil with each other?

Tucker: Civil with each other?

Ashley: Yeah, that would be a step in the right direction.

Tucker: Did you or did you not tell jack that I terrified you in paris?

Ashley: I did tell him that. Yeah.

Tucker: Terrified you?

Ashley: Yeah.

Tucker: Would you like to apologize to me for saying that?

Ashley: You did terrify me. I’ve never seen you that angry before, ever. You were beyond angry.

Tucker: Well, you just totally rejected me is all. No big deal.

Ashley: You know, that’s how you chose to look at it, tucker. You took my change of heart as a complete rejection of you. It wasn’t a complete rejection of you. So tell me, do you take any accountability for any of this?

Tucker: I got mad, yeah.

Ashley: You got mad? You were in a blind rage, tucker, and you– you made me afraid of you. And the fact that you don’t have any regret for that tells me everything I need to know about you.

Tucker: I have regret for it. I have sincere regret for it. Not for what I said though. But yes, I’m sorry for the way I said it.

Ashley: Well, that’s a step, I guess. I mean, it’s a small step, but look, I take responsibility because from your perspective, I could see that– that it– it felt like I was tearing a part of your world out from under you, okay?

Tucker: I’d say a little more than a part.

[ Ashley sighing ]

Ashley: It wasn’t calculated. Please look at me. It wasn’t calculated. It just evolved.

Tucker: Okay.

Ashley: And the bottom line is, okay, you and I are both responsible for what happened between us and– and I’m– I’m not here to warn you. I’m not here to threaten you.

[ Tucker chuckling ]

Tucker: Okay.

Ashley: I mean, can’t we just take a step and try to put this anger behind us?

Tucker: And then? ‘Cause your words sound very heartfelt, but what is it you’re actually willing to do?

Ashley: I don’t have any answers for your questions.

Tucker: In that case, this seems like an uncharacteristic misstep on your part.

Ashley: How so?

Tucker: Well, you come over here for a meeting and you have no idea what you want to get out of it.

Ashley: You know, I was just starting the conversation, tucker. I don’t know where it’s going to lead.

Tucker: Okay. So, you don’t know what you intend to do. What do you expect me to do?

Ashley: I don’t know. You wanna throw me out, slam the door behind me? Is that all we have left after everything?

Tucker: Maybe. Probably.

Ashley: You know, or you can take the first step like I’m trying to do and we can just agree that we are both to blame for what happened.

Kyle: It makes sense. Tucker would probably suspect I would head straight home from a meeting with him and tell my dad exactly what was happening.

Audra: But you would never do that, right? Because you’d be betraying me as well.

Kyle: No, I wouldn’T. And who better than you knows how discreet I can be?

Audra: You know what else I know about you? That I can discuss in public with your little boy maybe running up to us at any moment.

Kyle: What’s that?

Audra: I know that you’re ambitious. I know that you are incredibly smart and I know that there’s no doubt in your mind that joining tucker and me is a brilliant way of guaranteeing your future.

Kyle: Hm.

Audra: Unless there’s been some new development at home or at jabot since the last time we talked?

Kyle: Nope, nothing. I’m still on the outside looking in. In fact, I made it clear to my dad this morning that the only way I would return to jabot would be if I replaced billy.

Audra: How’d he react?

Kyle: He threw me a bone, offered me the coo position.

Audra: That’s a measly bone.

Kyle: Yep.

Audra: You know, selfishly, I’m glad he passed on your one perfectly reasonable condition. Objectively though, I– I don’t understand what he’s thinking.

Kyle: Yeah, I think I do actually. Look, it’s not for my dad’s lack of faith in me and he’s worried about what it would do to billy.

Audra: Well, I– I mean, that doesn’t make any sense. Look, I don’t know, billy very well, but he seems very capable of landing on his feet no matter what happens.

Kyle: Trust me, billy may seem tough and shrewd, but once you look past the designer suits and the cocky swagger, billy has a fragile psyche that implodes whenever he feels like he’s failed or he’s been rejected. He’s been in some dark places and I imagine my dad doesn’t want to feel responsible for sending him there again.

Audra: I had no idea. You know, he hides it very well. What kind of dark places?

Kyle: Uh, gambling, drinking, just… you know, let’s not get into it. I mean, billy and I have our differences, but he’s still my uncle.

Audra: So, here’s the question you might want to think about. You know, jack and billy might implode when tucker succeeds at ripping jabot away from them. Can you honestly say you’re okay with that?

Ashley: I heard you were in town. Hi!

Mamie: Ashley, I’m thrilled to see you. Oh, you look wonderful.

Ashley: So, do you. It’s so good to see you. Hi, nate.

Nate: Ashley. Good to see you. Welcome back.

Ashley: Thank you.

Mamie: I didn’t know that you had come back from paris.

Ashley: Yeah.

Mamie: I’m so sorry to hear that your marriage didn’t work out.

Ashley: Oh, yeah. Well, another one bites the dust. I’ll be okay.

Mamie: Oh, I know my ashley, so I have no doubt about that. So, why don’t you sit and have some coffee and we’ll talk all about it.

[ Mamie laughing ]

Ashley: I have a bunch of things I have to do at the house, but why don’t you come home with me? Everybody would love to see you and then you and I can plan a dinner, just the two of us.

Mamie: Oh, I wouldn’t miss out on that.

Ashley: Oh, yay. Okay. Great.

[ Phone chiming ]

Nate: Everything okay?

Mamie: Well, it will be when you say yes and promise to come over to chancellor-winters. And don’t expect me to give up.

Ashley: Oh, she’s not kidding, but you probably already know that.

Nate: Oh, I have no doubt.

Mamie: Let’s go home.

Ashley: Okay. See you later. How’s everything at newman?

Nate: Business as usual.

Ashley: Okay. I think I get that. Bye.

Mamie: I’ll be in touch.

Ashley: Come on.

Nate: I know you will be.

Kyle: By the way, there’s something you should know if you don’t know already.

Audra: Uh, what’s that?

Kyle: Ashley got back from paris last night?

Audra: Um, I didn’t see that coming. Does tucker know she’s back?

Kyle: I’m not sure.

Audra: Did she say anything about tucker or, um, what the plans are for the two of them?

Kyle: Not a thing, but that’s typical ashley. She plays things pretty close to the vest.

Audra: The first time you see her since things blew up between tucker and her in paris and you didn’t think to ask?

Kyle: We only had a few minutes to talk.

Audra: And she didn’t say anything about tucker or their fight?

Kyle: Well…

Audra: Uh-oh, what?

Kyle: She warned me that you’re using me.

Audra: I’m using you? I can’t wait to hear how I’m doing that.

Kyle: Mm. Well, according to ashley, you and tucker are just using me for information. About her, jabot, the abbots. You name it.

Audra: Well, she’s not wrong. Except for the using you part.

Kyle: I mean, I understand why she would go there. I am a great source of information. That’s why me being involved with tucker’s plan benefits us all. Look, as long as I get what I want, I’m good. I’m ready to see this through.

Audra: Mm. So, she didn’t manage to plant even a tiny seed of doubt in your head about me? Is there any part of you that’s wondering if maybe, you know, I am just using you?

Kyle: Mm. Nope. In fact, there’s a certain symmetry to it. When, uh– when we first got involved, my family kept accusing me of using you.

Audra: For what?

Kyle: The distraction of the pain from my divorce with summer.

Audra: Yeah. I– I– I thought that might be the case at first. And not that I minded. That made sense.

Kyle: Well, the pain is gone and yet, I’m still here. Ah.

Audra: Oh.

Kyle: Oh, more on that later.

Audra: Okay.

Kyle: In the meantime, I have to admit, my curiosity is killing me. I’m dying to know more details about how tucker plans to pull off this takeover of jabot.

[ Phone chiming ]

Audra: Um, okay. Oh, you’re not gonna have to wait much longer for that answer. From tucker. “I’m ready to meet kyle if he’s still available.”

Kyle: Tell him, yes, I am still available. I’ll go tell the nanny we’re leaving and say goodbye to harrison.

Audra: Okay. Um, hey, I– I just got your text. Uh, yeah. I’m at chancellor park with kyle right now.

Tucker: Perfect timing.

Audra: Hey, before we get there, uh, a quick heads up. Ashley is back in town.

Tucker: Yeah, that’s old news. She just left my room.

Audra: What happened? How did it go?

Tucker: I’ll fill you in later. Right now, bring me kyle abbott.

Kyle: Ready?

Audra: Yeah, I– I just called tucker and I told him we’re on our way.

Kyle: Well, let’s not keep the man waiting.

Audra: Right.

Nate: Sounds good. Thanks. Hey. Weren’t you fired?

Kyle: I was, thanks for reminding me.

Nate: Ah, and didn’t nikki make it clear that if you want to keep your job, you and kyle are to stop seeing each other.

Audra: Nate, what business is it of yours? And why do you care either way?

Nate: Why do I care? You know what? You’re absolutely right. I shouldn’T. Enjoy your morning, you two.

Audra: Okay.

Mamie: I ran into this beautiful lady at the athletic club and I’m just dying to know how she’s holding up after her marriage so suddenly fell apart.

Ashley: Oh, my god, mamie.

Jack: So, you went to the club?

Ashley: I went to the club and I saw tucker.

Diane: And you’re all right?

Ashley: Ah, yeah. Does jet lag count?

Diane: How’d it go?

Ashley: Pretty much as expected.

Jack: I practically begged you to stay away from tucker. He’s a wild card. He is volatile. He is dangerous. And the last time you were with him, he terrified you. Your words, not mine. And yet, first thing in the morning, you’re off to see him.

Ashley: Well, only because I feel like I’m the best person to get inside his mind and find out what he’s planning.

Jack: Oh, and I’m sure he knew that was your agenda the moment he opened his door and saw you.

Ashley: Maybe. Well, anyway, I– I said I was there to give him the opportunity to apologize to me.

Diane: And how’d that go?

Ashley: I’m fine. First steps were taken. Now, could I please get some coffee? I’m dying here.

Jack: Ash, I am begging you now. Stay away from tucker. This game you’re playing is dangerous. Just let it go.

Tucker: Hey, thanks for agreeing to meet.

Kyle: Uh, my pleasure.

Tucker: Sit down. So, I’m gonna get right to the point and I’m gonna be blunt because it saves time. Audra tells me you are willing to betray your family in order to secure a higher position at jabot. Is that true?

Kyle: Okay. Yeah, that was blunt. I wouldn’t put it quite like that–

Tucker: It’s a yes or no question.

Kyle: She’s right. I am.

Tucker: Okay, in that case, tell me why I should for a second believe you’re telling me the truth.

Victoria: That this is just another one of his games, to see which one of us would exploit his illness and take advantage of him?

Nick: It’s all one big trap, vic.

Victoria: What is the point? I mean, does he really think that we would try to steal newman enterprises away from him? No, I– no, nick. I mean, come on. This is just– it’s too cruel. It’s– it’s– it’s too horrible.

Nick: You know dad would and he did. I mean, he faked his own death to try and catch adam. It’s right out of the victor newman playbook. Anytime he’s worried about who he can and can’t trust, he does whatever it takes to test the loyalty of the people around him.

Victoria: Whose loyalty is he testing? Mine, yours, adam’s? I mean– I mean, we’ve all been worried sick about him. I was afraid at some point that we might lose him.

Nick: I know. I was shocked too at first, but then I was relieved.

Victoria: How did you find out?

Nick: It doesn’t matter. The point is…

Victoria: It was dad, wasn’t it? Dad. I see. So, you’re the only one in the family that he trusts.

Nick: I’m so sick of fighting with you.

Adam: Well, then just admit that sally still wants me.

Nick: If you believe that, you’re more delusional than I thought.

Adam: Okay, well, then why are you so angry? If the two of you are in love, why don’t you ride off into the sunset together and just leave me the hell alone? Because maybe she doesn’t want you.

Adam: My father doesn’t seem to be inclined to want to deal with what’s going on with him. I mean, how is an apology from me gonna change anything, if he can’t accept something’s even wrong with him? How is he gonna accept somebody taking responsibility for it?

Sally: Okay. Then, what can you do?

Adam: I, um, I reached out to a doctor.

Sally: A psychiatrist?

Adam: Mm-hmm. I told him what was going on. I told him how he was acting and he agreed that it was serious. But then again, how do I get him to talk to a man without him realizing what’s really going on?

Sally: Yeah. No, I agree. It’s a risky move.

Adam: Yeah, and it could completely backfire. He could just think this is me trying to work another angle. This is another con. But I’m gonna have to take that chance. I’m gonna have to follow through with it because honestly, I don’t know what else to do. Uh, dr. Skelton. Hey, adam newman. Thank you for meeting me. I know it’s late.

Skelton: I saw my last patient an hour ago, so this isn’t that late for me. Psychiatrists need to be flexible.

Adam: Oh, well, I’m sure. You come highly recommended.

Skelton: Well, thank you, mr. Newman.

Adam: Oh, no, please call me adam.

Skelton: Oh, thank you, adam. So, what can I do for you?

Adam: Well, before we get into it, I need to know that I can count on your discretion.

Skelton: Of course. All professional conversations between me and my clients are strictly confidential.

Adam: Okay. Well, I appreciate that.

Skelton: According to your message, this meeting between us isn’t about you. It’s about your father?

Adam: Yes, it is. And, uh, my father happens to be victor newman.

Skelton: Ah, yes. Well, I’ve certainly heard of him.

Adam: Yes. He’s, uh, a well-known, enormously successful businessman who’s also stubborn and usually the smartest person in the room.

Skelton: Well, his reputation certainly precedes him. I remember reading his unauthorized biography which I took with a grain of salt, by the way.

Adam: Yeah. Well, details aside, it wasn’t called ruthless for nothing.

[ Skelton chuckling ]

Skelton: So, how can I help?

Adam: I need your advice. I think he’s exhibiting signs of dementia.

Nikki: What do you think nicholas is going to do with this information that there’s nothing wrong with you?

Victor: He’ll probably go straight to victoria and tell her all.

Nikki: I imagine she’ll be quite upset.

Victor: And that is why she must not hear a word about any of this, all right?

Nikki: I would say that ship has sailed.

Victor: She’ll eventually understand.

Nikki: I don’t know that she will.

Victor: I don’t care. Doesn’t interfere with my plan.

Nikki: Your plan. Your wretched plan. What is the next step in this plan?

Victor: Kindly send him in. Thank you.

[ Nikki sighing ] Hello, nate.

Nate: Nikki, victor. I hope I’m not interrupting.

Victor: Not at all. Thank you for coming.

Nikki: Hello, nate.

Victor: Darling, would you give us some time?

Nikki: Are you sure?

Victor: Yeah.

Nate: I got here as soon as I could, victor. Is everything all right? Your call sounded a bit ominous.

Victor: Oh, yeah? In what way?

Nate: You told me I might be the only person you can trust.

Victor: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That is what I told you. All right. Right.

Victor: You know, nate, it is difficult to trust people who think that you’re no longer capable of running your own business because they think you’re losing your marbles.

Nate: Who is accusing you of that?

Victor: My children. My flesh and blood.

Nate: I can’t imagine that’s true.

Victor: Yeah.

Nate: They love you and have normal concerns about their father.

Victor: Wish that were so. Has victoria told you anything about this in private? I need to know what she has told you.

Nick: Look, dad didn’t just come out and tell me he was faking. He left a clue in his desk drawer. Adam found it and showed it to me. I just sort of put the whole thing together, confronted dad and he came clean.

Victoria: What kind of clue?

Nick: It was this bizarre drawing that he had done that tied back to one of my favorite books when I was a kid. Uh, it wouldn’t mean anything to anyone but me.

Victoria: What book was it?

Nick: It’s called the serpent of names.

Victoria: I don’t remember it.

Nick: Yeah. It’s not something you ever would have been interested in. When I first saw it, I thought it was like a cry for help, but then it occurred to me that it was meant for me. He wanted me to figure this out.

Victoria: Why?

Nick: I’m guessing to recruit me as an ally.

Victoria: So, I was right. You are the only one that he trusts.

Nick: I think that’s just because I don’t have any stake in the power struggle at newman.

Victoria: And adam and I are right in the middle of it.

Nick: And don’t forget nate. He gets something from the company too.

Victoria: Does dad know that you’re telling me about this?

Nick: I told him I was gonna tell you. And mom insisted that we come clean to you because she didn’t want you to agonize any longer over this imaginary mental condition.

Victoria: Mom knows about this? She’s been keeping all of this from me? How long has she been in on this, nick?

Skelton: I’m eager to help adam, but I’m sure you understand that I can’t make any kind of valid diagnosis without a face-to-face evaluation of your father.

Adam: No, and of course. And I would not expect you to do that. I was just hoping that you could maybe help guide me in the right direction if I was to give you some examples of what’s going on with him.

Skelton: Just as long as we agree that this is a completely informal discussion, nothing diagnostic.

Adam: Mm-hmm. Agreed. And just so you know, I’ve only witnessed these things firsthand. It’s just a few of them. Everything else I heard from my brother and my sister.

Skelton: Understood.

Adam: Okay. Well, let’s see. He forgot that he had appointed my stepmother, not my sister, to be in charge of one of the company’s divisions. He called me by my brother’s name, which I realize that’s not that uncommon, but it was the way that he denied it. He got so defensive and then he flew into a fit of rage. He fired me from a position he had appointed me to, and then it wasn’t even five minutes later, he said goodbye with a happy and jovial, “I’ll see you back at the office.” And then he brought up the baby that, um, my former girlfriend and I were expecting as if it had slipped his mind that we lost her weeks ago. And the list goes on and on. But none of this seemed to start happening until he decided that he was gonna come out of retirement and he was gonna resume his position as ceo of newman enterprises.

Skelton: Interesting. And I’m very sorry. These are very difficult examples. I’m sure it’s painful for all of you. But you have to keep in mind that, uh, there’s a very fine line between signs of dementia and just common age-related memory problems. And it’s very difficult to differentiate between the two without a thorough set of tests.

Adam: Maybe. Either way though, I mean, it has to be especially risky for someone that’s running a multibillion-dollar corporation that’s gotta constantly manage stress and make rapid-fire decisions, don’t you think?

Skelton: Of course, adam. And I empathize with your concern for your father. Stress can definitely be a factor in causing dementia-like symptoms that you’ve described. As can other physiological factors such as certain infections, sleep apnea, hydrocephalus, uh, vitamin deficiencies, even– even depression. All of those can be treated and most of them can be reversed. Progressive dementias like alzheimer’s disease can’T. The progression can only be slowed.

Adam: Okay. Um… well, uh, where do we– where do we go from here?

Skelton: Well, ideally I’d like to, uh, do a thorough review of your father’s complete medical history, all his medications. And then I’d like to run a series of tests.

Adam: How can we do that if he’s not willing to do it?

Skelton: We can’T. He’d have to be convinced. And I would say sooner rather than later. Undiagnosed or improperly handled and your father’s situation could very likely decline.

Sally: I love how supportive you are of people who matter to you, including me.

Adam: If I ever neglect to show you how grateful I am for you–

Sally: Never happen. Because I intend to make it easy for you to keep showing me, every day. What is all this?

Nick: There is something I haven’t said to you yet and it requires some embellishments.

Sally: What have you done?

Nick: What I’ve done is fallen completely in love with you.

Nick: Thank you.

Victoria: Thank you.

Nick: Look, I don’t know how long mom has known about this, but I can tell you keeping dad’s secret has been eating away at her.

[ Victoria sighing ]

Victoria: Poor mom. I mean, what a– a terrible position to put her in. And how could he even imagine that I would try to use his imagined diminished mental capacity to try to claw my way back into the ceo chair? That would be adam’s M.O., Not mine.

Nick: I did point that out to dad, but he is convinced somebody is going to betray him.

Victoria: Why?

Nick: Well, look at the way everybody reacted when he came back to the company.

Victoria: Well, nobody was expecting it. He just did it out of the blue. What?

Nick: I don’t know if dad is wrong.

Victoria: Excuse me?

Nick: It wouldn’t surprise me at all if there was a threat inside newman.

Victoria: Yeah. Our brother, which is obvious to everyone but dad. But no, no, no, no, no, he has to– he has to suspect everyone in the world. Including me.

Nick: And nate.

Victoria: No, I am not going there with you.

Nick: I’m just saying, maybe he has reason to be concerned and we should give him a chance.

Victoria: So, what are you saying? We play along with this plan and– and help him to smoke out adam?

Nick: I think we should consider it. I think you’re right. Adam is exactly the kind of person who would take advantage of a weakened and incapacitated leader for his own benefit. So, maybe we do just go along with it and if we get lucky, adam just weasels his way right into dad’s trap.

Victoria: Yeah. And then, maybe dad can finally see adam for who he is and give up on this ridiculous belief that he’s ever gonna change.

Nick: It would make this whole mess worth it.

Victoria: I suppose. Maybe.

Nick: Look, vic. We’re never gonna stop dad from being dad. If he wants to do this, he’s gonna do it. So, if we try to stop it, maybe this whole thing blows up in our face. But if we go along with it, we just gotta let adam be adam.

Victoria: I’m just so torn. I’m furious at dad right now. But I’m– I’m also relieved that he’s fine after all.

[ Victoria sighing ] Frankly, I don’t know– I don’t know how to handle this.

Nick: I know, vic. It’s– it’s a lot to process.

Victoria: I know that you don’t trust nate any more than you do, adam, but is he on dad’s list of possible traitors? Has he considered that nate might take advantage?

Nate: As you know, victoria and I are together. We confide in each other.

Victor: Mm-hmm.

Nate: So yes, of course, she’s shared some concerns about your mental health. No judgment. Not at all. Just a daughter being protective of her father. And she’s scared something terrible might be happening with you.

Victor: I see.

Nate: I hope you know, I hate the idea of betraying her trust. I’m just trying to ease your mind. She wouldn’t even think of using a mental lapse against you. Not a chance. And she’s come to terms with your return to newman. Her concerns for what may or may not be your condition come from nothing more and nothing less than the profound love she has for you. You do know that, right?

Victor: Of course, I wanna believe that victoria’s support comes from love, you know, without an agenda. I hope that’s the case with all my children.

Nate: What about nick? Do you think he shares victoria’s concern?

Nick: Let me just get this straight. You put me and vic through hell just so you could prove what we already knew. That adam cannot be trusted. Or more accurately, adam and nate.

Victor: You have got to trust that I know what I’m doing. Yes, I do.

[ Victor sighing ] Nate, I’m gonna have to tell you something in confidence. No one must know anything about the conversation I’m having with you now.

Nate: You have my word.

Victor: And to be honest with you, I feel that my family’s worries are justified. I really am beginning to fear that my grasp on reality is well, slipping away.

Nate: I’m so sorry. But what makes you think that?

Nick: Don’t worry, I’m not gonna try to convince you or dad that nate might be a threat.

Victoria: Because he isn’t one, nick. Look, I need to know what dad believes.

Nick: All right, when dad came clean to me, he specifically said he needed to sell his mental decline to you, adam, and nate.

Victoria: So then, the three of us are his targets.

Nick: I don’t think dad wants you to know about it because he doesn’t want you to spill it to nate.

Victoria: All right then. Well, maybe we should go along with dad’s plan. I want to see adam fail.

Nick: Glad to hear it.

Victoria: In fact, maybe you shouldn’t even let him know that you told me everything. That way, I will be a lot more convincing when I pretend to be genuinely concerned.

Nick: Then, we escort adam right into dad’s trap.

Victoria: Good. Then maybe finally, we’ll be rid of him.

Skelton: It could actually be counterproductive to ambush your father, adam. This will only be effective if your father willingly cooperates with being diagnosed and examined.

Adam: Yeah, you, um, have no idea how unlikely that is. But I will see what I can do. And in the meantime, I– I appreciate your advice. You know, I– I love my father and I am scared for him and I for him and I want to do whatever I can to help him.

Skelton: I understand and I admire your devotion.

Adam: Well, I’ll be in touch with you when I know more.

Skelton: I’ll expect your call. In the meantime, please make a note of any further incidents.

Adam: No. Absolutely.

Skelton: All the best to both of you.

[ Adam exhaling ]

Victoria: Why do you say that?

Nick: I was talking with him earlier. Adam actually thinks we should all join forces so we can get dad the help he needs.

Victoria: Oh, please. As if he really cares.

Nick: I know. I didn’t believe him either, but I got to be honest, he actually seems as worried about dad as we’ve been.

Victoria: Oh, my god. Yes, of course, that’s how he seemed. The more he acts like he cares, the more he thinks we believe him, the closer he gets to dad and then he stabs him in the back and twists the knife. That’s who adam is. It’s what he does. So, if this gets rid of him once and for all, then, uh, god bless dad for thinking of it.

Nick: All we can do is try.

Victoria: I was so scared, nick.

Nick: I know. I know and I’m sorry for both of us. And for what it’s worth, I think dad is too.

Victor: You know, I gotta tell you the most disturbing lapse of memory was the fact that I had forgotten that adam and sally had lost the baby.

Nate: I see how that can shake you.

Victor: She was my grandchild. She died and I didn’t remember that. I– I really began to fear that I’m losing my memory.

Nate: Listen, victor, the incidents you just described would frighten anyone, but please don’t try to diagnose yourself and jump to the worst possible conclusions. This may not be as dire as you think it is. You need to see a medical professional who can tell you what’s going on and what to do about it. There very well might be treatments out there that can turn this thing around.

Victor: So, you’re saying this is not– not hopeless.

Nate: You don’t have nearly enough information to be writing yourself off as hopeless.

Victor: Well, I’m relieved to hear you say that. To be very honest, very relieved. Because I tell you this so bothers me, I need to get this out of my mind, you know?

Nate: Yes, exactly what you and all the people who love you deserve.

Victor: And by the way, I knew that you would be understanding and compassionate. You’re a doctor. You’re a damn good doctor, so I knew I could come to you.

Nate: Always, victor.

Victor: One thing I gotta ask you. None of this, none of what you and I are talking about now, no one must know about it.

Nate: That goes without saying.

Victor: Because if there’s even the slightest hint that I’m losing my marbles, as it were, that would be devastating to my company. I mean, devastating.

Nikki: I had a feeling you would leave the ranch to go find your sister.

Nick: There was no way I was keeping this news about dad from vic.

Nikki: So, you’ve told her everything?

Victoria: Yes. Yes, he did, mom. And don’t you dare get mad at him for doing what you should have done the second that you knew dad was faking all of this.

Nikki: I am not mad. I am relieved that this is all out in the open. But I’m sure that you’re upset with me.

Victoria: Look, I understand that you were put in a terrible position, all right? But what I don’t understand is how you could watch me go through so much worry and concern without speaking up about it.

Nikki: I know. And I– I am so sorry. I came so close to telling you.

Victoria: But you didn’T. You didn’T.

Nick: Vic, come on, take it easy on her. Like you said, dad put her in an impossible position.

Nikki: Your father seems to think someone is scheming against him and they’re going to betray him soon and this is his idea of how to trick them into revealing themselves.

Victoria: Me though? He suspects me? I mean, how could he think I would stoop so low to use his mental struggles against him? Just because he demoted me? I mean, does he think that little of me, mom?

Nikki: No, of course not. He adores you. He adores both of you. Never doubt that.

Victoria: Well, then I just don’t understand.

Nikki: Well, personally, I think this is all adam’s fault. After years of being double-crossed by his own son, victor now wonders if he can trust anybody he’s close to.

Victoria: That might be true, but it’s not an excuse. And I’m not sure that I can forgive him.

Adam: Look, sally, will you please wait? I’m not going stalker on you, okay?

Sally: Okay. Then, what are you doing?

Adam: I just– I hate that you still feel so uncomfortable around me. I mean, I thought we moved past this. If something’s changed, I want to know what it is.

Sally: What are you talking about?

Adam: You practically ran out of the lounge when you saw me.

Sally: I wasn’t running from you. I just had bad dreams and I was a little agitated. So I thought, uh, going to grab a drink would calm me down.

Adam: I offered to buy you a drink.

Sally: But when I got to the lounge, I realized that I needed sleep more than I needed alcohol, so I just left.

Adam: If I wasn’t there, would you have stayed?

Sally: This has nothing to do with you.

Adam: Okay.

Sally: Well, now you look like something’s wrong. And you did downstairs as well. Are you okay?

Adam: No, no.

Sally: Does this have anything to do with the man that I passed on the stairs?

Adam: Yes, that was dr. Skelton who’s a psychiatrist. I was meeting with him.

Sally: About your father?

Adam: Mm-hmm. I wanted to get his advice on how to help him.

Sally: Well, good for you. You know, being proactive.

Adam: Mm-hmm.

Sally: You’re really worried about him, aren’t you?

Adam: More than anybody would believe. Since I’m always up to something devious and trying to plot something.

Sally: It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks.

Adam: Look, I’m worried sick about him and I don’t think that there is a damn thing that I can do to help him. If your moderate to severe crohn’s

Nate: I have some brilliant contacts in the mental health and psycho-neurological communities. Say the word and I’ll make arrangements to get you tested, accurately diagnosed and treated. And to ease your mind, they’ll be as sensitive to the importance of discretion in this situation as I am.

Victor: All right. But I’m gonna reiterate, not a word of this to anyone, all right? Not even to victoria.

Nate: She’d be relieved to hear you’re doing something about this. But it’s your decision to make, not mine.

Victor: And by the way, not a word of this to adam, all right? And if any of the doctors should call you back, tell them to contact you on your cell phone, not the regular landline, not by email. ‘Cause if adam picks up on any of this, it’ll be disastrous.

Nate: You’re that suspicious?

Victor: Well, can you blame me? I bet you adam is smelling the blood in the water already. And by the way, this conversation stays between us, you and me. Or else.

Nick: You know what, it doesn’t really matter how we handle the situation. The bottom line is when you find out someone you love is faking a decline in order to expose a traitor, it’s not an everyday occurrence. I think we all reacted accordingly.

Nikki: True.

Nick: So let’s not dwell on the previous rotten weeks. What is important is what we do going forward.

Nikki: If we could only figure out what that is.

Victoria: Actually, nick has an idea that might help move things along.

Nikki: Oh, I’d love to hear it

Nick: Simple. We just go along with it. We act like we’re buying dad’s condition, while dad continues to set his trap. Hopefully, adam walks right into it.

Nikki: Or nate.

Victoria: Come on, you two. Would you please stop with all this distrust of nate? Look, it’s ridiculous and it’s silly and you know as well as I do that adam is the danger here.

Adam: Should we stop?

Sally: I don’t want to stop.

Adam: I don’t want to stop.

Kyle: I’m tired of my family offering me crumbs and expecting me to take it with a smile. I want what is rightfully mine and I will do anything to get it.

Nate: I didn’t think much of it at first, but then I found out something about aunt mamie that changes the whole ball game. And it isn’t good.

Victoria: Nick told me that you’ve been fooling us this whole time. I can’t believe that you would let me think that there’s something seriously wrong with you. Do you actually think that I would exploit your health just for a job title?

Sharon: Hey, nick, you’re up late.

Nick: Yeah. Got time for a cup of coffee?

Sharon: Sure, sit down. You look exhausted.

Nick: It’s been a long day.

Sharon: Did you talk to victor? Oh, no, what happened? Did he take a turn for the worse?

Nick: No. No, it’s just, uh, dad playing victor newman, the role of a lifetime and the hilarious part is we all keep falling for it.

Sharon: I don’t understand. Falling for what?

Nick: There is no cognitive decline, sharon. Dad is as sharp and cunning as ever.

Sharon: You mean?

Nick: We’ve been played, duped, all of us?

Nikki: Well, I’m relieved that nicholas at least knows the truth now.

Victor: I wanted to tell him on my own time.

Nikki: He had already figured it out. And now you have to go to victoria and tell her you are no more mentally compromised than she is.

Victor: Not yet.

Nikki: Why not? How long are you going to play this game?

Victor: I need to find out what the hell I want to find out.

Nikki: What, that your children are disloyal to you? We already know that adam is and victoria would never betray you.

Victor: That remains to be seen.

Nikki: She is no more an enemy to you than nicholas. Why are you torturing her?

Victor: Sweetheart, to be frank with you, right now I only trust you and nicholas.

[ Nikki sighing ]

Nate: What are you thinking about?

Victoria: I was thinking about what you told me earlier, about adam possibly using my father’s illness against him.

Nate: I thought we agreed to put that to bed for the rest of the night.

Victoria: I know. I know. I’m sorry. It just makes me so mad that I still have to think about adam and worry about what his intentions are. All because my father won’t let him go. Even at the risk of his own health.

Nate: You’re forgetting something.

Victoria: What? What’s that?

Nate: Adam works for me.

Victoria: I know that, nate, but–

Nate: No buts. I’m in a position of power over adam and he knows I’m watching every move he makes. So, if he does anything, anything to exploit whatever victor is going through, I’ll be aware of it. And I will make sure your father is too.

Nick: I absolutely hate it that adam is manipulating you. That he’s manipulating us. And it just proves yet again that all that talk from him about wanting to be a better person was just that. It’s just talk. It’s just adam. He’s always going to be him and it’s clearly affecting you.

Sally: It seems like you’re the one that he’s affecting because it’s not me. Not in any way that matters anyway.

Nick: I think that kiss tapped into some emotional truth for you.

Sally: No, nick, you’re wrong.

Nick: Listen to me. I’m not wrong. You just refuse to see it right now. And until you do, I can’t be with you.

Adam: Sally.

[ Sally sighing ] You and nick, it’s um, it’s over, isn’t it?

[ Adam sighing ] Look, I’m– I’m– I’m sorry.

Sally: It’s okay.

Adam: No, it’s not okay. Once again, I’ve ruined something good for you. You know what, I’ll– I’ll leave you alone.

Sally: Adam… don’t go.

Sharon: It was all a lie?

Nick: Dad was setting a trap for whichever one of his children would try and take advantage of dad’s so-called weakness.

Sharon: So he pretended to be losing it?

Nick: You got it.

Sharon: Well, I can’t say I’m surprised, but still, what an awful thing to do to anyone, especially your family.

Nick: It’s not exactly unprecedented. Remember ashland locke?

Sharon: Yeah, of course.

Nick: Dad got ashland to sign over his company to him while he was having a heart attack. Pretty nice, huh? It’s a page right out of the victor newman playbook.

Sally: But you haven’t done anything to give victor cause to doubt your loyalty.

Nick: No, and neither has victoria. She was certainly upset when she got kicked out of the ceo spot, but not to the extent she would ever betray or exploit a weakness. We were very concerned about him. It just makes me feel like even more of a fool for ever believing him.

Sharon: You were just trying to be a good son.

Nick: We all know the target for the scam was the other brother.

Sharon: You think victor suspects adam?

Nick: Yes, of course. Why not? But what I don’t understand, I just don’t get it is he had already purged adam from the company. Why bring him back just to prove what we already knew? He can’t be trusted.

Sharon: Victor has a soft spot for adam. He always has.

Nick: Yes. Why? My brother is nothing but a power-hungry narcissist who will do whatever it takes to get whatever he wants.

Sharon: Guilt will make people do some irrational things sometimes.

Nick: Yeah. Like give adam what, his 500th chance? I’m sick of it. I’ve had enough.

Sally: Just so you know, it’s not over, over, between me and nick.

Adam: What does that mean?

Sally: Just that there’s no finality to it because he won’t discuss it, at all. He’s frustrated and hurt with good reason. You were responsible for some of that.

Adam: Yes, I know.

Sally: No, don’t get me wrong. I was right there too. I just– it would be very easy to just blame it all on you, but the truth is you were just being honest with me about where your heart is. It’s just not what I wanted to hear.

Adam: Well, it wouldn’t be the first time that I, uh, I didn’t read the room.

Sally: I think the kiss confused us both.

Adam: Yeah. Maybe. I don’t know. Maybe it was just me doing what I always do. Bulldozing my way through without any regard whatsoever for what you really wanted, which was nick. You know, you had a right to be resistant. I poison whatever it is I touch.

Sally: Adam.

Adam: No, it’s– it’s the truth. You know, sometimes I think that I’m just cursed to be this– this catalyst of bad fortune. And it’s not that I try to be, but sometimes I just always end up in the middle of it. With my career, my relationship, family. Even when I have good intentions and god knows I have not always had them, I just always manage to screw it up. With you, my father.

Sally: What now with victor?

Adam: It is just– it’s– it’s more the of same.

Sally: Tell me.

Adam: Sally, come on, it’s not anything that you need to bother yourself with right now. It’s just family stuff.

Sally: That is clearly upsetting you.

[ Adam exhaling ]

Adam: Yeah. Yeah, it is. I think that I’ve finally driven my father over the edge.

Nikki: Did you not see the genuine fear in victoria’s eyes when she was over here or hear it in her voice? She is terrified that something is happening to her father. She can’t fake that.

Victor: Well, if that is true, then she has nothing to worry about.

Nikki: What do you mean if that is true?

Victor: I demoted her as ceo. She has plenty of motive. Don’t you forget that.

Nikki: She is your daughter. She has proven her loyalty to you time and time again, so I don’t understand why you’re suddenly throwing all of that out the window and putting her on the same level as adam.

Victor: I am perfectly aware of what adam is capable of, all right?

Nikki: And yet you’re still insisting on testing them? Victor, please. Please tell victoria the truth and put adam back where he belongs, on the outside looking in. Hi, I’m sharon, and I lost 52 pounds on golo. On other diets, I could barely lose 10-15 pounds.

Victoria: Thank you.

Nate: What for?

Victoria: For your support.

Nate: You will always have that.

Victoria: I know and I’m grateful. It just feels like sometimes I’m being pulled in a million different directions and I– you know, it’s– it’s helpful to have someone in my corner like you. I’m scared, nate. I’m– I’m really worried about my father right now. Something’s wrong with him.

Nate: We don’t really know what’s happening.

Victoria: We know that he’s not himself. I know that he’s not himself. And if it’s something more serious, then we need to get him the best possible care and we need to do it now.

Nate: Agreed.

Victoria: And I also have to– to be practical about the business. Because if news of this gets out, I mean, it could inevitably impact newman enterprises both inside and outside of the company.

Nate: Okay. So, what’s the next step?

Victoria: First, we just need to– we need to arrange for my father to see a specialist first thing tomorrow morning. First thing. And they’re probably gonna want to arrange to do some tests on him, maybe bring in some more doctors. But we need to get the ball rolling right away. What? Do you not– do you not think it’s a good plan?

Nate: No, no, no. I– I– I think the plan is great. It’s exactly what I would do if it were my family going through something like this.

Victoria: So, why do I get the feeling you think it’s not gonna work?

Nate: This is about your father, who happens to be victor newman. Titan of industry, legendary businessman who didn’t get to where he is by showing vulnerability or weakness. I’m betting he’s not gonna just quietly fall in line when you tell him he might need treatment.

Victoria: Well, then what am I supposed to do? Nothing?

Nate: Of course not. I’m just reminding you the trick won’t be to come up with a plan. The trick will be to get victor to go along with it.

Sharon: It always comes back to adam, doesn’t it?

Nick: It is the common denominator. Every crisis that this family has gone through ever since he showed up.

Sharon: And victor loves him.

Nick: Boy, he absolutely does and I have no idea why.

Sharon: It doesn’t really matter why, nick. It’s a fact. And you keep bumping up against this every time you try to figure out what victor wants to do.

Nick: Oh, I won’t deny that adam makes my blood boil every time I have to deal with him.

Sharon: Well, maybe just consider this from victor’s point of view. Maybe he really thought that adam was genuine and sincere when he promised to change and he just wants to give him another chance.

Nick: Yeah, yeah. But then, as usual, adam does something to make my father suspicious. I already thought about that.

Sharon: And?

Nick: If that were the case, then dad would have already figured out what he needed to know. So then why continue this game? Why keep pretending like you’re losing it and putting your family through that? It doesn’t make sense. What are you thinking about?

Sharon: What if adam isn’t victor’s target?

Nick: Well, then my dad really is losing it.

Sharon: No, think about it. He already suspects adam and you’re in the clear because he told you what he’s been doing. And that leaves victoria.

Nick: No, no way.

Sharon: No way what? That she would ever betray him or that he would think she would? I’m just asking you to consider the possibility that maybe victor doubts her loyalty and he’s just waiting for her to make a move.

Sally: So, what is going on with victor?

Adam: He’s um, he– he’s been acting erratically lately. You know, victoria was the first to notice it. Uh, I didn’t really believe her at first.

Sally: Why not?

Adam: Because I thought she was just angling to get dad declared incompetent so she could get her old job back, but then I started to see things.

Sally: Like what?

Adam: He would forget things. He would like lose the thread of the conversation. He would have these drastic mood swings that he would turn on a dime. And then earlier today, I went to his office and I looked in his drawer and there was this weird– weird little drawing that he had filed away like it was important business.

Sally: And you think you’re responsible for that, how?

Adam: Because it all goes back to the moment that I was pushed out of newman.

Sally: I’m sorry, adam, it just seems like a really big leap to me.

Adam: No, no. Not if you add it on to the years and years of him wanting me to succeed. Giving me every opportunity more than anyone has ever gotten. And then me letting him down every single time. And this last time probably pushed him over the edge.

Sally: Yeah, but you did change, adam. You told victor that you wanted a reset and you were willing to start at the bottom and he’s given you that chance. So, I just– I’m not really seeing the connection.

Adam: Yeah, he probably saw right through me. To the truth.

Sally: I don’t understand.

Adam: It was all bogus, sally. It was a scam to get what I thought were my just rewards. To punish the people who hurt me and I think that my father in his infinite wisdom figured it out and it gutted him.

Sally: So, you lied to everyone. You lied to me. No catharsis, no redemption.

Adam: None. Just revenge, pure and simple.

[ Sally sighing ]

Sally: I don’t know what to say. I guess you fooled everyone.

Adam: Well, not everyone.

Sally: Well, you fooled me.

Adam: I am truly sorry about that, but all I could think about was paying them back. Victor, nick, victoria. I wanted to punish them all. And what better way to do that than from the inside? Pretending that I’d seen the light.

Sally: And so what? I was just collateral damage?

Adam: Sally, if I had told you what I was up to, you would have tried to talk me out of it. And I did not want to be talked out of it. I wanted to destroy all of them. There’s just this thing when I get angry or hurt, it clicks on in my brain and it just shuts off all logic, all compassion. And all that’s left is just pure, blind rage and that’s what I wanted. That’s what was driving me.

Sally: Well, I’m sorry for you then.

Adam: No, you shouldn’t be. The irony is I got the revenge that I wanted. I pushed my father off the deep end. And I actually, I– I feel sick about it.

Nate: Still thinking about your dad?

Victoria: Nope.

Nate: Want me to guess?

Victoria: No, you’d just laugh.

Nate: I promise you, I won’t laugh.

Victoria: I was just laying here imagining what it would have been like to have been born into a– a normal family.

Nate: Is there such a thing?

Victoria: I’m sure. I mean, there has to be, right?

Nate: Okay. Are we talking like tv version? Like white picket fence, dad goes to work, mom stays at home with the kids?

Victoria: Except in my family, the mother would work too.

Nate: Obviously.

Victoria: But it wouldn’t be a family business. It would be… I don’t know, just…

Nate: Something simple?

Victoria: Yeah, yeah. Like the day wouldn’t start with overnight markets and end with a– a bottle of wine. It would– everyone would just, you know, they’d just go to work and maybe be able to do something worthwhile.

Nate: Is that what you want?

Victoria: No.

Nate: Okay. You had me worried there for a minute.

Victoria: No, but I do sometimes wish that my dad, that he could just be my dad. Not my boss or my– my business partner. So that, you know, I could just talk to him about something, you know, other than newman enterprises, like we used to. I could ask him how he’s feeling without him worrying that I’m trying to push him off his throne.

Nate: Don’t you though?

Victoria: Don’t I what?

Nate: Want to replace him? Be him eventually. I mean, you’ve spent your whole life being groomed for that.

Victoria: Well, yeah. Yeah, but every time I get close, I mean, he just– he pulls the rug out from underneath me. So then what, you know? Sometimes, it feels like we’re this royal family where all the children are just waiting around for the king to die so they can fight over his crown. Nate, I don’t want my dad to die. I don’t want that. And sometimes, you know, like right now, right in this moment, I don’t know if I want the crown either.

Sharon: I know you feel protective toward victoria.

Nick: This is not about me being protective. This is about me knowing my sister.

Sharon: Well, she was pretty angry when victor demoted her and that wasn’t the first time either.

Nick: Look, I don’t for one second believe that my sister would exploit what she thought was dad’s real illness. Yes, she can be angry. She can be vindictive, but she loves him. She would never betray him like that.

Sharon: Okay, you know that. But you’re not victor. Who knows whatever goes on in that complicated mind of his? He told you the truth, but he didn’t tell victoria.

Nick: Well, I basically forced it out of him.

Sharon: Okay, but still, it’s clear that he may not completely trust her.

Nick: He claims that’s about nate, all right? He clearly doesn’t trust him either, which I agree with. So, he doesn’t want victoria spilling any of this to him.

Sharon: Okay, now this is starting to sound a little bit paranoid.

Nick: The worst part is victoria is genuinely concerned about dad’s health. So, there he is, letting her suspect the worst while also potentially setting her up to take the fall. Tell me again why I agreed to go back to the family business, even temporarily.

Sharon: Because you thought they needed you and you felt like you could help.

Nick: I should just be focusing on our thing, you know? It’s more fun and far less aggravating.

Sharon: We’re still getting things done, nick. We haven’t fallen behind.

Nick: I know, but…

Sharon: It’s okay. Look, I understand. You feel like you need to be there to help sort this out and you will, you always do.

Nick: Sharon, I don’t know this time. I mean, it’s like dad’s disappointment in adam is filtering down to the rest of us. I have no idea how it’s gonna play out this time.

Victor: You know damn well I don’t want to see the worst in any of my children.

Nikki: We are talking about victoria specifically.

Victor: I’m very aware of her qualities.

Nikki: And her loyalty?

Victor: Darling, you’ve got to trust me, okay? There’s one last part of the plan I need to put into play.

Nikki: And what is that?

Victor: You’ll see.

Nikki: What do you have up your sleeve this time?

Victor: Details aren’t important.

Nikki: The hell they’re not.

Victor: I don’t want to put you in another compromising position.

Nikki: Oh, are you afraid that I’m gonna spill the beans again like I did with nicholas?

Victor: Well?

Nikki: I stepped up and told him the truth and you still resent me for that, don’t you?

Victor: I don’t resent you.

Nikki: Well, then tell me what your plan is. Unless you were lying when you said you trusted me.

Victor: I trust you, all right? But I’ve got to do this my own way. The stakes are very high.

Nikki: Just so you know, doing things your way have caused everyone close to you to be sad or angry or both. You just don’t want to be wrong. It’s as simple as that. And this will not end well. You can trust me on that much.

Nick: I think I have to tell vic the truth. You don’t agree with me?

Sharon: Well, normally, yes, I do think you should let her know. I’m just thinking about how much victoria idolizes her father.

Nick: I don’t think she’s idolizing him very much at the moment.

Sharon: Well, it goes a lot deeper than that. Victor has been her mentor and her guide for most of victoria’s life. Unless you believe that his holding back from her really is about nate?

Nick: He just doesn’t trust her right now.

Sharon: If she finds out that he’s been putting her through this test or this trap or whatever it is he’s calling it, that could destroy their relationship forever.

Nick: Yeah, I’ve thought about that. They have a special connection, one that the rest of us don’t have with him. But what does it matter if it’s built on a lie this big?

Sharon: She could end up hating him.

Nick: Well, if that happens, that’s on dad. He made this mess.

Sharon: So, you are going to tell her?

Nick: I don’t see that I have a choice.

Sally: You really are a mystery, adam.

Adam: Well, I’ve been called worse.

Sally: No, seriously. You are. I mean, you say that you regret your part in whatever’s going on with victor, but I know the history. There have been other regrets and other broken promises.

Adam: So, in other words, you don’t believe a word that I’m saying.

Sally: I want to believe you, but there is a part of me that just keeps going back and forth. Like is he actually sincere this time? Or is this just another ploy to gain my sympathy?

Sally: Okay.

Adam: Okay?

Sally: I believe you.

Adam: Is this a leap of faith or is this coming from your heart?

Sally: A little bit of both.

Adam: What changed your mind?

Sally: The look in your eyes. I can see the fear, the compassion, the guilt.

Adam: Oh, there’s plenty of that.

Sally: Yeah. So, I guess the bottom line is that I have decided to trust you one more time.

Adam: And I cannot tell you how much that means to me.

Sally: I also believe that if you told victor what you just told me that he would believe you too.

Adam: I don’t know. I think it might be a little too late for that.

Sally: How so?

Adam: Oh, my father doesn’t seem to be inclined to want to deal with what’s going on with him. I mean, how is an apology from me gonna change anything. If he can’t accept something’s even wrong with him, how is he gonna accept somebody taking responsibility for it?

Sally: Okay. Then what can you do?

Adam: I, um, I reached out to a doctor.

Sally: A psychiatrist?

Adam: Mm-hmm. And I told him what was going on. I told him how he was acting and he agreed that it was serious. But then again, how do I get him to talk to a man without him realizing what’s really going on?

Sally: Yeah. No, I agree. It’s a risky move.

Adam: And it could completely backfire. He could just think this is me trying to work another angle. This is another con. But I’m gonna have to take that chance. I’m gonna have to follow through with it because honestly, I don’t know what else to do.

Sally: Well, I did think of another option.

Adam: Oh, yeah. What’s that?

Sally: Talk to your family about it. Get together with nick and victoria and face this together. Victor’s three children as one united front.

Adam: Yeah. Well, dad always did preach family unity.

Sally: Well, there you go. See?

Adam: Yeah, I already tried that. I already talked to nick and he completely dismissed the idea of working together. And victoria? Come on, we can barely stand to be in the same room with each other.

Sally: Okay. So, you’re just gonna give up?

Adam: No, I told you. I tried.

Sally: Okay. Well, try harder. Tell them that this is way bigger than whatever is going on between the three of you. And tell them for your father’s welfare, they need to work as a team.

Adam: You know, you’re really good at this.

Sally: What?

Adam: Pep talks. I’m sure when you get your new company off the ground, you’re gonna be an inspiring boss.

Sally: Thank you.

Adam: Mm-hmm. I know that you inspire me.

Sally: So, are you gonna do it?

Adam: You’re forgetting one thing, big thing, in between me and nick.

Sally: No, I’m definitely not forgetting it. And I do know that I am part of the conflict between the two of you, but this is way bigger than that too. And nick will eventually see that if you tell him what you just told me.

Adam: Yeah. I– I don’t know about that.

Sally: Look, just tell him, adam. Arrange a meeting between the three of you where nothing else has to matter except for your father’s health and welfare. If you guys want to go back to hating each other afterward, then so be it. But please do not let any of this get in the way of helping victor now.

Nick: Thanks for this.

Sharon: For what?

Nick: Just, uh, listening very patiently. You know– you know, went back and forth trying to figure out what I needed to do. You never once yawned or told me to stop talking.

Sharon: You’ve been there for me too. More than a few times.

Nick: I guess that’s the way it is with old friends.

Sharon: It’s nice that we can be that for each other after all these years.

Nick: It is.

Sharon: So, are you gonna call her?

[ Nick sighing ]

Nate: You could stay.

Victoria: Mm. That’s really tempting, but…

Nate: Yeah, big day tomorrow.

Victoria: Oh, they’re all big days.

[ Phone ringing ] Nick.

Nick: Hey.

Victoria: It’s late. Is everything okay?

Nick: No, everything is not okay.

Victoria: Oh, my god. Is it dad?

Nick: No, dad’s all right, but I do need to talk to you about him.

Victoria: Yeah. Look, um, I think that maybe I convinced him to talk to someone. To sit down and just let them get a sense of what’s going on with him.

Nick: Vic.

Victoria: And I promise if they don’t find anything, I– I’ll let it go.

Nick: You don’t need to worry about that. But there is something I need to talk to you about and I’d prefer it if we do it face to face.

Victoria: Okay.

Nick: It can be tonight, tomorrow, whenever you want.

Victoria: Uh, well, I can meet you now.

Nick: Great. I’ll, um, I’ll be at society waiting for you.

Victoria: Okay, I’ll see you there. That was nick. Um, I’m gonna meet him.

Nate: So I heard. Is it about victor?

Victoria: Uh, well, whatever it is, it sounded urgent because he didn’t want to talk about it over the phone.

Nate: Okay. Keep me posted.

Victoria: Yeah, I will.

Nate: And if you need anything, I don’t care what time it is. I’ll be here for you.

[ Nate exhaling ]

Adam: Well,

Adam: Well, I guess this is good night.

Sally: Good night.

Victoria: What is it?

Nick: You should sit down.

Victoria: Would you please stop with all the mystery and just tell me what’s going on? If dad’s getting worse, just say it.

Nick: Dad is fine.

Victoria: What are you talking about?

Nick: He’s as sane and healthy as ever. Probably more so after everything he’s been putting us through.

Victoria: I don’t understand.

Nick: He was lying. Everything that we thought we saw, everything that we thought he was going through was just a trap to test our loyalty.

Victoria: No. I mean, that can’t be. How did you find this out?

Nick: He told me.

Victoria: He told you?

Nick: Yeah, after I busted him. Told him I figured the whole scheme out. He’s been playing us.

[ Phone ringing ]

Nate: Victor.

Victor: Nate, I need to see you.

Nate: Uh, when?

Victor: Right now. Come to the ranch, okay? And don’t tell anyone where you’re going.

Nate: Uh, yes, victor, of course. But uh, can you at least tell me what’s happening?

Victor: They think that I don’t know what’s going on, but I do happen to know what’s going on.

Nate: Who are they?

Victor: I cannot talk about that right now over the phone. Just get here and make sure that no one knows where you’re going.

Nate: Absolutely.

Victor: You’re the only one I can trust, nate.

Victor: Son, I’m not used to people walking in here demanding things of me. You understand? Not even you. What is this nonsense about you demanding that I come clean? Come clean about what?

Nikki: What’s going on? What do you mean you’re on to your father?

Nick: I said it’s time to come clean and I meant that. I wanna know what’s going on.

Victor: And what the hell are you talking about?

Nick: Not good enough. I figured it out.

Victor: Really?

Nick: Yeah.

Victor: What did you figure out?

Nick: You draw this?

Victor: It’s a hell of a drawing.

Nick: You don’t have to answer. I already know.

Nikki: What is it?

Nick: It’s a snake, created from the names of his children. At least the ones he’s in business with. Nicholas, victoria and adam. And I know exactly what it means.

Christine: Danny.

Danny: Hi. Oh, wow.

Christine: I didn’t know you were back in town.

Danny: And daniel said that you were in portugal.

Christine: Yeah. Yeah. I– I just got back a few hours ago. I thought I’d come here to get some caffeine. Jet lag, you know.

Danny: Oh, yeah, definitely. I know it. Well, um, come sit and join me. Come on, I’ll order for you. An espresso?

Christine: Yeah, I’ll just– I’ll get something in a minute. It’s okay.

Christine: It’s really good to see you.

Kyle: Now, if you don’t mind, I’d like to mix a little business with pleasure.

Audra: Hm. By all means. Does that mean you’re ready to talk about what we discussed last time? A future where you and I get to run jabot together?

Kyle: You’ve asked me to join your alliance. It kind of sounds like we’re on a reality show, doesn’t it?

Audra: Uh, yeah. Just what’s at stake, it’s just a tiny bit bigger.

Kyle: No kidding. I thought about what we talked about. I’m intrigued, but if I’m gonna help you and tucker take over jabot, I’m gonna need to know a few more details.

Audra: Such as?

Kyle: How exactly do you expect to pull this off? What’s your timeline? Where does this leave my parents and more specifically, how do I fit into your plan?

Tucker: Jack. What the hell are you doing here? Shouldn’t a newlywed be home with his new bride? Don’t tell me there is marital trouble on your front as well.

Jack: Actually, I have something for you. I haven’t returned too many gifts in my day, but this one should go back.

Ashley: Hey, diane.

Diane: Ashley, this is a surprise. Jack didn’t say anything about you coming home today.

Ashley: Yeah, he didn’t know. I didn’t tell anybody. I just, you know, I figured it was time to come back home, so I hopped on a plane.

Diane: Well, I’m sure your brother will be thrilled to see you.

Ashley: I bet you’re happy to see me, right?

Diane: Yeah. You know, we’re never going to be besties, but we are family. So peace for jack’s sake?

Ashley: Absolutely. You saved my life.

Diane: Oh, there is that.

Ashley: So, I will try very hard not to hate you.

Diane: Well, I will try hard not to hate you back.

Ashey: Great. How’s everybody, anyway?

Diane: Um, uh, well, kyle left this morning. I haven’t seen him. Traci, I think she had dinner plans, and, oh, my grandson is upstairs getting ready for his bath.

Ashley: Oh, my grandson. I have to see dominic tomorrow. Absolutely.

Diane: Ashley.

Ashley: Yeah.

Diane: Um, hey, I’m– I’m sorry about the way your marriage turned out. I mean, I– I– I don’t know your side of things directly, of course, but, um, there is no doubt in my mind that tucker is to blame for whatever happened.

Ashley: Yeah. You know what? It’s okay. We don’t really have to dwell on that, okay?

Diane: Okay.

Ashley: Yeah. Uh, I mean, I would like to know what tucker’s been up to since he came back to town. Obviously, I’ve been in touch with abby and jack, so I know, you know, some of the things tucker’s been saying, but… what have you heard? Just, you know, I mean, is he planning something? Um, he came right back to genoa city when he left paris, right?

Diane: Oh, yeah, he’s– he’s here.

Ashley: Okay. So, lay it on me. Tell me the whole ugly truth.

Diane: Of course, I’m going to tell you the truth. Look, we might have our differences, but we do share a common goal. And we both want to protect the abbotts and jabot from whatever plan tucker has up his sleeve.

Ashley: Right.

Jack: When I realized you were listening in, I was tempted to beat you at your own game.

Tucker: All right.

Jack: Yes. Some fake conversations, send you charging off in the wrong direction. The entertainment value was hard to pass up.

Tucker: But you did, pass it up.

Jack: Well, I realized I didn’t want to stoop to your level.

Tucker: There’s good old jack, righteous as ever.

Jack: I don’t need to stoop to your level. See, I have no doubt in my mind, the abbotts will always have the upper hand where you’re concerned, so whatever it is you’re really up to here, whatever it is you want to accomplish, I have some advice. Give it up. Go away, back to your monastery or your mountain top. Anywhere but here.

Tucker: No, I like being close to my son and my grandson. Besides, running away is really not my style. It sounds like more of an abbott trait.

Jack: I’m sure I don’t have to remind you, we have some serious dirt on you. If it is released, and my brother, billy, is all too eager to do that, you would be disgraced in the business world. Totally discredited.

Tucker: Ah, credibility. Who needs it, really? Look at you. It’s obviously not a prerequisite for success or accomplishing any of my goals.

Jack: And what are those goals, tucker? Creating mayhem, getting revenge? What else?

Audra: It’s tucker’s plan, not mine. I’m just along for the ride.

Kyle: And the top spot at jabot.

Audra: That too.

Kyle: Ah. But the basic idea is that tucker would assume control of my family’s company.

Audra: Look, as I understand it, tucker is so angry at ashley that he’s gone back to his original idea. You know, what brought him to town in the first place? Taking over jabot.

Kyle: Jabot is a top cosmetics company, but it’s not a conglomerate like he’s used to running. Like mccall, which he doesn’t even own anymore.

Audra: Well, tucker sold mccall for ashley, you know, and then she just changed her mind at the last minute about partnering with tucker on a new venture. So, I think he feels like he’s owed something.

Kyle: Look, I– I don’t know details about what happened between my aunt and tucker. I mean, I’ve heard a few things from my dad and abby, but surely tucker doesn’t think the breakup with ashley was all her fault.

Audra: Well, tucker doesn’t like to take the blame for anything. And with breakups, don’t we usually point the finger at the other party?

Kyle: Mm-hmm. So, where’s tucker’s head now? What’s he thinking?

Audra: Well, I can’t be sure. You know, tucker’s hard to read sometimes. It’s hard to know his true intentions. You know, it’s a skill I admire when he and I are on the same side, but it’s infuriating as hell when we’re not.

Kyle: I don’t get it, audra.

Audra: Get what?

Kyle: Why do you trust the guy? And why do you think I should?

Nikki: Where did you get that?

Nick: Adam found it in dad’s desk drawer.

Victor: Did he? So, adam went through my desk?

Nikki: And he gave it to you?

Nick: I took it from him. Adam has no idea what it means. But I do.

Nikki: Well, what does it mean?

Nick: It’s from a story. The serpent of names. Dad used to read it to me when I was little. Do you remember that?

Victor: Yeah, I have a vague recollection.

Nikki: Oh, yes, I remember. It was one of your favorites.

Nick: It was my absolute favorite. I would make dad read it to me every night when he put me to bed. The serpent of names was our thing, dad. We shared that. That drawing was for my benefit. You wanted me to find it.

Victor: Now, wait a minute. You have a rather fertile imagination, don’t you?

Nick: I think it was a cry for help. You realized something’s wrong and you need me. You can’t trust victoria and adam right now. But you can’t possibly think that victoria would use whatever struggles you’re having to betray you. I couldn’t betray you. I’m not at the company right now, but adam–

Nikki: For god’s sake, victor, this has to stop. Please tell nicholas the truth.

Nick: Tell me the truth about what? Mom? Dad?

Nikki: Victor.

Nick: Has this whole thing been a setup? Have you been putting on an act? The mental slippage, the forgetting of past events, calling people by the wrong names? Are you kidding me? God, I knew there was more to it than that. There’s no way your faculties declined that far, that fast. I just don’t understand why. Why would you do that? Why would you let us be so worried and afraid for you? Why?

Victor: Because I had to find out who could be trusted.

Danny: All right. So, now that we’ve got you properly caffeinated, tell me about the trip. What happened?

Christine: I’d rather hear about you.

Danny: Come on, you’re upset. Talk to me.

Christine: I mean, why would I want to talk about my not-so-wonderful life when I can hear about the latest adventures of a rock star? Or– or what brings you back to genoa city for starters?

Danny: Well, I got a couple of months off from the tour. We scheduled it that way so I could spend more time with daniel.

Christine: And with phyllis?

Danny: Phyllis?

Christine: Yeah, I saw her leaving when I got here.

Danny: Oh, well, you know, I mean, she sort of comes with the daniel package. I know how you feel about her. We both feel that way, but I think she’s sincere about wanting to change.

Christine: Like you’ve never heard that before.

Danny: Okay, that’s– that’s fair.

Christine: I mean, for what, like the last 25-plus years?

Danny: She talks passionately about turning her life around after she beat this murder charge.

Christine: She didn’t beat the charges. I mean, she walks around telling people that. She was guilty. She had as much as admitted that. She talked a good game of remorse and the judge gave her a pass. It’s not exoneration as much as she’d like to pretend that it is. And, you know, let’s not forget that she should have been put away years ago for attempted murder.

Danny: Hey, I get it. Okay? I really do. It’s hard for you to give phyllis a break.

Christine: It’s impossible, danny.

Danny: It’s hard for me too. We both know what she did. All the harm she caused for so many years. But maybe, just maybe, this is the one time to try.

Ashley: I was at the most incredible cafes all over paris and somehow I still managed to miss mrs. Martinez’s coffee. So tell me, you’re convinced that tucker’s planning something. Is there anything specific I should know about?

Diane: No, it’s just a bit of cat and mouse at the moment.

Ashley: What does that even mean?

Diane: Billy found evidence that tucker was trying to bury a cover-up of some criminal activity by one of the artists signed to the mccall label.

Ashley: Yeah, yeah. The statutory rape case. I know that the pr people covered it up and then audra and tucker tried to bury the cover-up, but they did a crappy job of it because there’s emails out there, so.

Diane: Exactly. You knew about that?

Ashley: Well, yeah, I mean, we were married. He told me after the wedding.

Diane: Uh, well, we tried to use it as leverage to get tucker out of town.

Ashley: That didn’t work, obviously.

Diane: Nope, he’s still here.

Ashley: So, now what?

Diane: Billy wants to take the information public. Use it to discredit tucker, ruin his reputation, with the hopes that it’ll stop any idea he has of coming after us.

Ashley: That’s ridiculous. I mean, tucker does not care if he’s seen in a bad light. He knows that people have very short memories and he’s very good at spinning everything in his favor. You know what? I need to talk to jack, and billy, right now.

Jack: I am done with your games, tucker.

Tucker: I’m not. I’m having such a ball getting under your skin and keeping you guessing. It’s immensely rewarding.

Jack: We’re done here. Now, I pretend you don’t exist.

Tucker: No, no, don’t do that, jack. That would make it far too easy for me. I mean, you do you, as they say, but with that attitude, you’ll never see me coming.

Jack: Why, that’s a lot of talk. A lot of bravado for a man trying so hard to cover his desperation. You’re running scared, tucker. As delightful as this conversation has been, it is over.

Audra: Tucker may be hard to read sometimes, but you know, I feel like I know him better than almost anyone else. I’m a pretty perceptive gal and you know, I can read his demeanor and– and push him in whatever direction I think he should go.

Kyle: Okay. So, you know how to use him. That’s what you’re saying?

Audra: It’s a good skill to have.

Kyle: Look, I know you and tucker go way back, that you used to be close, but it’s sounding more and more like you still are. Just how close are we talking?

Audra: Well, you know, we, um– we have an interesting dynamic. You know, at times it’s one thing, then it’s another.

Kyle: Has it ever been sexual?

Audra: Would it bother you if I said yes?

Christine: It’s unbelievable that phyllis can have you brainwashed after all this time.

Danny: No, no, wait a minute. I– I’m not defending anything that phyllis has done. I just– I’m just saying that some second chances are warranted.

Christine: Second, third, a hundredth. You know, I don’t want to talk about phyllis.

Danny: Okay. Let’s talk about your trip then.

Christine: No, I– there have to be other topics, you know, than my trip or phyllis. How about my godson? Omegasphere is doing really well, right?

Danny: I know you so well, cricket. I think you do want to talk about what went down in lisbon. And who better with than me? Long time friends. Great listener. Always gives his exes another chance. Come on, talk to me.

Christine: So, I went to see paul in portugal. I think, you know, that he went there to stay with lucy and heather after he retired. So, we hadn’t seen each other in months.

Danny: But you stayed in touch?

Christine: Yeah, I’m– I don’t think we talked about this when you were here for the bicentennial, but paul and I had been going through some problems. Nothing huge or insurmountable. At least not that I thought. But as soon as he retired and spent more time at home, it was like our issues became magnified and– and we had such differences of opinion.

Danny: But you didn’t think the marriage was over?

Christine: I thought we’d separate. You know, spend some time apart and– and figure things out. We were still communicating. I was texting him every now and again. I– I– I called him on his birthday, but I knew that I needed to give him some space. Because after all, he crossed an ocean to get away from me.

Danny: I’m sure it wasn’t like that.

Christine: If you say so. Anyway, at the end of phyllis’s case, paul reached out and asked if I wanted to come to lisbon so we could discuss our future. And I– I looked at that as a really positive sign.

Danny: Yeah, it sounds positive to me.

Christine: So, I got there and– and at first it really did seem like he wanted to work things out. You know, we explored the city. And we went to all these like really great places to eat and we– and we went to the beach. I mean, you guys were friends. You– you know how fun he can be.

Danny: Yeah. I do, I do.

Christine: We just– we didn’t talk about our problems or what was next. We just… we just enjoyed each other’s company. And for a minute, it felt like the good old days. It felt like we traveled back to when– when we were happy, you know? When… when things weren’t strained. When– when we wanted the same things.

Danny: Well, it sounds wonderful.

Christine: Yeah. It just didn’t last because eventually, we realized that we had to talk about things. You know, really talk and not just gloss over all of our conflicts and– and try and pretend like everything was okay, only because we wanted it to be.

Danny: Okay. So, you talked.

Christine: We talked and we talked and– and we tried to figure out if there was any hope for us. Or for our marriage.

Danny: And?

[ Christine exhaling ]

Christine: There’s nothing. There’s nothing.

Kyle: Okay. You and tucker as colleagues, as friends, I guess I can see that. But sleeping together, I mean, you seem too strong and independent to be seduced by him.

Audra: Maybe I seduced him.

Kyle: I guess that’s more plausible, but why? Tucker is– well, tucker is a lot of things, and devious is pretty high on the list. Why would you want that kind of involvement?

Audra: What are you saying?

Kyle: Well, tucker isn’t the most stable guy in the world? I mean, look at what happened with ashley. One hint of betrayal, at least in his eyes, and he goes ballistic.

Audra: Yeah. Well, um, I can control tucker. That’s never been a problem. And as far as I’m concerned, he’s just a means to an end. For me, okay? And for you too if this all works out. So, kyle, are you in? Are you ready to sit in that jabot co-ceo chair you deserve? You know, the one your father doesn’t want you to have.

Jack: Hey, welcome home, ash.

Ashley: Hey, thank you. Good to be here.

Jack: Oh, I missed you.

Ashley: Thank you.

Billy: Yeah, so did I.

Ashley: Hello.

Billy: Hi.

Ashley: Hello.

Jack: Listen, I am so sorry for all you have been through. I promised myself I wasn’t gonna push or reach out in any way beyond simple business stuff until you told me you were ready.

Ashley: Okay. It’s fine. I knew I had your support. Thank you so much.

Billy: That husband of yours is an idiot.

Ashley: I told you so? Is that where this is going?

Billy: No, I just think it needs to be said.

Ashley: Because honestly, I have been beating myself up enough about another failed marriage, billy. So, please don’t rub my nose in it. I don’t need you for that and i don’t need you for that either.

Jack: I would never do that, ash.

Ashley: Of course you would. But please, could we just focus on what tucker’s up to and what we’re gonna do to stop him?

Billy: Yes. Abbott band back together.

Ashley: Yeah. We need to have a united front against what I’m sure is a planned attack.

Jack: We are absolutely united against tucker mccall, but I don’t think he has the ammo for a big attack. He is a hurt and desperate man these days.

Billy: I agree. He– he seems to be trying to hold on to power, make himself seem relevant.

Ashley: Right. Okay, so I don’t think it’s a very smart idea to underestimate tucker. You know, I don’t think that’s smart.

Diane: Ashley’s right.

Billy: Okay, let me ask you a question. I, um– clearly, we’re very, very thrilled that you’re back home, but why– why are you here now? I know that you were concerned that coming face to face with tucker would only make him more angry, so–

Ashley: Yeah, I was. I was and then he reached out to me a couple of times. You know, he said he wants to fix things so, I thought I could use it to my advantage.

Jack: I think I have some idea where this is heading and I don’t like it at all.

Audra: So, does that mean you’re in?

Kyle: Oh, I am totally, completely in.

Audra: You know, you were worried about betraying your family. You’re not anymore?

Kyle: I’m tired of being pushed to the side. Treated like jabot isn’t my birthright just as much as it is my father’s and my uncle’S. I’m going to take control of my future by helping you and tucker take control of jabot.

Nick: Let me just get this straight. You put me and vic through hell just so you could prove what we already knew? That adam cannot be trusted. Or more accurately, adam and nate.

Victor: You have got to trust that I know what I’m doing, all right?

Nick: Just so you know, I have no problem whatsoever with any plan that proves adam’s quest for redemption is a load of crap. But dad, you cannot keep letting victoria go through this. It’s cruel.

Nikki: Yes, it is. And I’ve been opposed to this idea since I first learned of it.

Victor: And I don’t like the idea that you exposed it before I was ready.

Nick: Dad, come on. You wanted me to figure it out.

Victor: And you did.

Nick: Why didn’t you just come to us instead of letting us worry about you? Instead of testing us? You obviously don’t trust victoria. You don’t trust me. It’s more than just adam you’re worried about.

Victor: I have faith in you. Now that you know the truth, I’m counting on you.

Nick: You used me. You stressed me out. You let me worry about you night and day. And now you want me to be your ally? You gotta be kidding me.

Nick: If you need my help to sell your mental state to victoria, adam, and nate, that means you don’t trust my sister, your daughter.

Victor: You know damn well how furious she was when I demoted her.

Nick: Vic would never let you suffer in order to get her position back.

Nikki: Of course, she wouldn’T. And you know that.

Nick: Yes, vic likes to be in charge. I mean, I’ve had my run-ins with her. She chose nate over me. You think that didn’t hurt? That it still doesn’t hurt? But I have no doubt about her loyalty to this family or to you. She needs to know the truth, dad.

Victor: Son, it’s all too soon. I need to know who I can trust.

Danny: I think I’m missing something here. You and paul are in lisbon together. It’s going well, you’re having fun. And then, all of a sudden, what? You’ve decided it’s over?

Christine: I’m giving you the shortened version. After paul and I spent some time in portugal, we decided to take a trip. We had the time. I had all these vacation days saved up for something. And so, we thought it would be a good idea. And we– we realized that you really get to– to know people better when you travel.

Danny: That’s true.

Christine: So that was, you know, part of it. We were gonna– we were gonna get to know each other again. And we were gonna go to places that we had been before that made us happy. And we were gonna use all those good times as a backdrop. To try and figure out what went wrong after all these years together and a couple trips down the aisle.

Danny: It sounds like a good plan.

Christine: Except it backfired. Instead of all those romantic memories bringing us closer together, it actually… it made it very obvious that the distance between us had grown to a point where there was just– there was no way back.

Danny: Chris, I…

Christine: We just don’t work together anymore. You know, we both saw it so clearly and it wasn’t about us growing apart. It was– it was about paul pulling away. He’s just not in love with me anymore.

Jack: What? You’re not seriously considering pretending to rekindle things with tucker to find out what he’s really up to?

Ashley: Well, it worked before. I know him better than anybody.

Jack: Yes, you know, his volatility up close and personal. You know he’s a wild card and you cannot be sure that he will believe that your overtures are real. Ash, there are too many variables. I cannot let you do this.

Ashley: It’s a good thing I don’t need your permission.

Danny: I’m so sorry, chris.

Christine: Thank you.

Danny: You know, I love you both. You and paul. And I hate to see you like this. You’re positive there is no hope? Counseling or maybe some more time apart.

Christine: No, no, no. It’s– it’s over. I– I don’t have any more doubts. Not anymore. And there’s something about that conviction that almost brings me a sense of peace.

Danny: So, what happens now?

Christine: I’m just gonna have to figure it out.

Danny: And you will.

Nick: You really need to tell victoria what’s going on.

Victor: That is not a good idea right now.

Nick: If you’re that concerned about adam being a threat, then we should all fight him together.

Victor: Let me tell you something. Adam is not the only threat.

Nick: You can’t possibly mean victoria. Is it nate? Is that who you don’t trust?

Victor: I cannot rely on victoria not telling and not alerting nate.

Nick: Okay. I can understand that. But I’m telling you, if vic finds out about this on her own, she is never gonna forgive you.

Ashley: Hey.

Kyle: Ashley, you’re home.

Ashley: Yeah. Hi.

Kyle: Nobody told me you were coming back.

Ashley: It was a surprise.

Jack: And we’re all very happy about it.

Kyle: Well, I’m sure abby’s thrilled. I mean, how are you doing after everything that happened? I guess you’ve been discussing tucker.

Jack: So, where were you, kyle? Linda came down a little while ago saying that harrison was ready for his bedtime story. I didn’t know where to tell her you were.

Kyle: Yeah, I’ll get right on it. Um, you know dad, if you must know, um, I was with audra.

Diane: I thought you said things were over with her.

Kyle: Well, it’s not. No reason for us not to see each other now that I’m no longer working at newman media.

Jack: Kyle, I know you and summer are divorcing. You are certainly free to date anyone you want, but don’t you think you could do better than audra charles?

Kyle: Oh, seriously, dad? Have you learned nothing about judging other people’s choice in partner?

Jack: I am just trying to spare you–

Kyle: No, no, no, no. You know nothing about her. I mean, not really, and you, of all people, mom, should know what it’s like to be judged unfairly and not given a second chance.

[ Diane scoffing ]

Ashley: Ah, I mean, you do know that tucker and audra are close, right? I mean, they’re very close.

Kyle: I’m aware of this.

Diane: We just want what’s best for you, kyle.

Ashley: Ah, she’s his confidant, actually. And I mean, have you considered the possibility that she’s using you? I mean, have you even considered that?

[ Knocking on door ]

Audra: Oh, my god. What are you doing here, tucker?

Tucker: Well, I just saw handsome kyle abbott downstairs, and a-ha, I figured he might have come from here. How goes the conquest?

Audra: Well, you gave me an assignment and I’m– I’m carrying it out. I don’t need you breathing down my neck.

Tucker: Sometimes you like it when I breathe down your neck. Oh, sorry. How about a little progress report?

Audra: All you need to know is that kyle is on board.

Tucker: Good job.

Audra: I mean, surely you didn’t doubt my ability to convince him?

Tucker: Oh, no, no, no. I know how persuasive you can be.

Audra: So, what’s next?

Tucker: We find out if we can trust him.

Adam: What does it mean, pop? Huh?

[ Adam sighing ] Something is not right here.

Nate: What the hell are you doing?

Nikki: You’re doing this on purpose, aren’t you?

Victor: Doing what on purpose?

Nikki: You know what I mean. Vacillating between between lucidity and confusion. This is some kind of plot you have concocted, isn’t it? Victor, for god’s sake, will you please tell me the truth? I need to know that you’re not losing your mind.

Victor: Baby, I am not losing my mind, okay?

Nikki: So then, you are tricking everyone.

Victor: Put it this way. Things are beginning to coalesce around me, so…

Nikki: I– I don’t even know what that means.

Victor: Well, that means that I’m beginning to discover certain patterns among my children and it’s somewhat upsetting.

Victoria: Mom.

Nikki: Oh, thank you for coming, darling.

Victoria: Yes. Of course. Is this about, um… where’s dad?

Nikki: He’s out taking a walk.

Victoria: How does he seem? That’s why you called, right? Because you noticed he’s forgetting things and he’s behaving erratically? Well, how worried do you think we should be?

Danny: All right. To your new home, son.

Phyllis: Woohoo!

Lily: Hear, hear!

Daniel: Thank you.

Lily: Congrats.

Daniel: Thank you. Thank you for all of this. And, um, thank you for bringing chairs.

Lily: Well, I know sally’s gonna help you decorate the place, but at least now you have an option other than the floor, right?

Danny: I don’t know. I’m kinda digging this spartan vibe.

Phyllis: I’m just glad that you’re out of the hotel and you have your own place.

Lily: Me too.

Phyllis: Yes.

Lily: Neighbor.

Phyllis: Given everything you’ve gone through, I’m surprised you’re staying, but I’m very happy.

Daniel: You know, it might come as a shock to you, mother, but the current state of our relationship doesn’t dictate why I want to stay in genoa city.

Danny: Okay, how about some more champagne?

Phyllis: No, I’m just saying– sure, sure. I mean, you’re putting down roots. That means you have a reason to stay.

Lily: Yeah, I hope so.

Daniel: You can count on it.

[ Lily chuckling ]

Phyllis: Several reasons, I’m sure, given the current developments.

Daniel: What do you mean?

Danny: I’m sure phyllis is talking about how you and lily found your way back together.

Daniel: Yeah.

Lily: Mm-hmm.

Daniel: Is that what you meant?

Phyllis: Yeah! Yeah. Well, that’s one of the things. For sure, for sure.

Lily: Well, thank you. I’m touched.

Daniel: Well, you are at the top of my list of good things that have happened to me, so…

Phyllis: And don’t forget all of your success with omegasphere.

Danny: Absolutely. You know, all those good things in your life, daniel, they didn’t just happen. You worked hard. You took a video idea and what? Turned it into a whole division of a company? I mean, come on.

Daniel: Mm-hmm. That’s all because somebody believed in me and took a chance on me.

Phyllis: Uh, yes, yes, but don’t sell yourself short. You deserve it.

Daniel: Yes. But I needed someone to believe in me to make it happen.

Lily: Yes, but I heard your vision, I saw how hard you worked and I knew that you could make it a reality.

Danny: And more than a reality. You built a whole new career for yourself.

Daniel: Okay, okay, okay. I will take some of the credit.

Danny: And you’re in a solid relationship with someone who really knows you and gets you. Hey, that’s a lot to celebrate.

Lily: Along with your new home.

Phyllis: Yes. And yay! Heather and lucy are moving back to genoa city. You get to be near your daughter.

Lily: Yeah and I agree. ‘Cause I think it’s great that you get to spend more time with lucy, right?

Phyllis: Yeah?

Daniel: Well, I am looking forward to spending more time with my daughter.

Phyllis: Yes, absolutely. That’s what I meant.

Adam: You know, why does it feel like I just got caught sneaking into my parents’ liquor cabinet.

Nate: I don’t know, adam. Have you been caught? What are you doing in here?

Adam: Why do you care?

Nate: Oh, that you’re sneaking around victor’s office, sitting in his chair like you own the place. Why would that concern me, adam?

Adam: Look, I just was–

Nate: Fantasizing what it would be like, huh?

Adam: Um, I don’t need to fantasize since I’ve actually run this company.

Nate: But right now, you work for me. You know I’m gonna have to tell victor, right?

Adam: And that would be fine. But okay, I admit it, technically, I should have run this by you first. I’m supposed to report to you and I shouldn’t be taking orders from anybody else in the company, but he is, you know, my dad.

Nate: What paperwork did he ask for?

Adam: The kind that he would consider private. Do I aspire to this chair again? Of course, I do. I mean, who wouldn’t? I, uh, suspect it has crossed your mind too.

Nate: If only my last name were newman.

Adam: Hm. That would make a difference, I can’t lie. Look, I, uh, appreciate your concern about my father, but there is nothing to be worried about, boss. All right? Those projections that you asked for are in your inbox, so I’ll see you in the morning.

Adam: Hm. That would make a difference, I can’t lie. Look, I, uh, appreciate your concern about my father, but there is nothing to be worried about, boss. All right? Those projections that you asked for are in your inbox, so I’ll see you in the morning.

[ Nate sighing ]

Victoria: Well, something upset you enough for you to reach out to me. What was it, mom? Would you please talk to me? I need to know what’s going on.

Nikki: Victoria, I–

Victor: Sweetheart, everything all right?

Victoria: Hi, dad.

Victor: Hi, my darling.

Victoria: Good to see you.

Victor: What brings you by so late? Hope nothing was wrong at the office.

Victoria: No, everything is fine at the office.

Victor: So, why’d you come by? To check up on me or what?

Victoria: Would that be such a bad thing?

Victor: Yes. Perpetuating the notion that your father is losing his marbles.

Victoria: Well, you have–

Victor: It’s absurd. And I hope you were about to tell our daughter that.

Nikki: Words to that effect, yes.

Victor: Good. And I have your support.

Victoria: What’s going on between you two?

Victor: Nothing, okay? We’re having a little private matter we’re discussing. Otherwise, everything is fine. Nothing to worry about. Hi, my name is damion clark. And if you have

Victoria: I get it, dad. I get it. This is not a conversation that you want to have. I know you don’t like when people question your ability to manage things, especially because you’re the one who always holds everything together.

Victor: Especially when that person feels she should be running newman enterprises instead of her father.

Victoria: Oh, come on, dad. That’s not what this is about. I don’t care about that title.

Victor: Give me a break.

Victoria: As much as I care about you. I have a lot of questions.

Victor: The answer’s very simple. There’s nothing wrong with me.

Victoria: You know? You see, that is exactly what I said after what I went through with jt.

Victor: Why do you bring that up now?

Victoria: Because… for months and months, I told people that I was fine, that there was nothing wrong. I just needed to get back to work and look after my family, but then I finally had to face the fact that there was something wrong, that I couldn’t operate at that level.

Victor: So, it’s a totally different conversation. That was forced upon you by jt’s madness.

Victoria: Daddy, I know, I understand. The circumstances were different–

Victor: Yeah.

Victoria: But you and me, we’re the same. We’re the decision makers. The ones that people look to and when I finally had to admit that yes, indeed, I was struggling, I needed your help and I needed your guidance and it made all the difference in the world. I just– I want to return the favor.

Nikki: You know, it’s late, we’re all tired. We should have this conversation–

Victor: What do you mean by wanting me to return the favor? What do you mean by that?

Victoria: Just please talk to a professional. Agree to do that. If they talk to you, then maybe they can figure out if something’s going on. If not, if I’m overreacting, then you can throw a big, huge “I told you so” party.

Victor: If I did, would that put an end to this?

Victoria: If I’m wrong, then yes. Yes, most definitely.

Victor: Huh. I’ll think about it.

Victoria: Thank you. I guess that’s the best that I could hope for.

Adam: Nick. Look, I realize that I’m the last person that you want to deal with right now.

Nick: Way to read the room.

Adam: Listen, wait, wait. Can we please just put everything else aside for a minute and talk about dad? Because I’m really concerned something’s wrong with him.

Nick: You know, the first time vic brought this up, that she thought that dad was acting confused, I didn’t pay much attention to it. I just thought that she was exaggerating because she was bitter that dad demoted her.

Adam: Okay. Well then, what changed?

Nick: Dad’s the smartest person in every room, you know? He’s always three steps ahead.

Adam: Yeah, and yet, he’s done some questionable things lately that things that the smartest man in the room would not do.

Nick: But wouldn’t it be just like dad to do something like this as part of a grand plan?

Adam: To what end?

Nick: Well, adam, I no longer think victoria’s exaggerating.

Adam: What changed your mind?

Nick: He made a comment about victoria taking over newman media and not mom.

Adam: Could’ve been a slip.

Nick: Tried to tell myself that.

Adam: Like when he called me by your name?

Nick: That’d be two slips. This coming from the man who’s usually on top of everything.

Adam: Nick, come on. It has to be something bigger than that to make you this concerned. Come on, nick. I– I’m concerned too. Can we just put aside the anger for a minute and act like victor’s sons? What else happened?

Nick: He also said that, uh, you and sally were still expecting a baby.

Adam: He forgot that we lost her?

Nick: I reminded him. He just tried to change the subject.

Adam: Geez. Wow. Th– this morning, dad, he went off on me and then later, it’s like he– he didn’t even realize that he had done it. He seemed like everything was fine, but then he went on this paranoid riff that you and victoria were trying to sabotage him. I, uh, I ended up going to his office. I’m not sure why. Was trying to find clues that could help us put this together and this is what I found. Have you ever known dad to doodle?

Nick: No.

Adam: It’s not like him at all.

Nick: Well, given what we’re talking about, this seems like it’s insignificant to me.Adam: Yeah, I– I thought the same thing until you look more closely. If you look at the lines, they’re little letters. It’s writing.

Nick: It’s just names over and over again. Victoria, adam and nicholas.

Adam: Yeah, you see the image? It’s a snake and fangs. It’s really– it’s weird. And it’s really disturbing.

Phyllis: Okay, okay, I’ll admit it. I had an ulterior motive encouraging heather to move back to town. I did.

Daniel: Mom.

Phyllis: I want to be near lucy, okay? Big deal, sue me. That was my reason.

Lily: Yeah. She’s gonna be off to college before you know it. Trust me.

Danny: Reminds me of when you were a teenager, daniel, you know? Figuring things out. Hey, do you remember when we first realized that he might just have artistic talent? Yeah, remember that? He drew that wild caricature of his gym teacher.

[ Phyllis laughing ]

Phyllis: Mr. Pollard. Do you remember that?

Daniel: Mm-hmm.

Phyllis: He did not think it was funny.

Daniel: Nope.

Danny: No, no, no. In fact, I think he made him waterboy for a couple of games, didn’t he?

Phyllis: Remember that– remember that tight uniform he made you wear?

Danny: You sent me a picture of it, you know? You did. It was priceless, wasn’t it?

Daniel: Priceless. You also remember before I really found my passion for art, that I want into photography? You should remember. I was the official tour photographer that one summer.

Danny: Yeah. Oh, yeah. Great times.

Daniel: Yeah, great times, until mom found a picture of me and some random girl partying on the tour bus and decided that it would be a good idea to show my current girlfriend at the time and you know, that ultimately led to us breaking up, but yeah, good times.

Phyllis: Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.

Danny: And look where we are today, huh? Come on, you channeled those amazing drawing skills and you used them to turn your life around. And you created a video game in which your daughter was the central character. I mean, how amazing is that?

Lily: Yeah, it was amazing. I mean, you gave her an incredible gift.

Phyllis: Absolutely.

Danny: Yeah. And your mother has turned her life around. Yeah, she’s– she’s been through stuff that… might have broken someone else, but it made her strong and I think a newfound appreciation for family and for all the opportunities that you’ve given her.

Phyllis: Thank you. Absolutely.

Danny: I think we should drink to that.

[ Daniel sighing ]

Daniel: I’ll get more champagne.

Danny: It’s so nice.

Daniel: Well, I can’t thank you guys enough for helping me break the place in.

Lily: Yes, and the food. Thank you.

Danny: Hey, that was all phyllis.

Phyllis: That was my pleasure.

Daniel: This feels good. I’m gonna like it here.

[ All chuckling ]

Phyllis: Thank you for letting us be a part of your celebration. I really appreciate it. And I have to tell you, honestly, after my kids have been all over the globe, I’m so happy that my babies– my babies are right here in town. It makes me so happy. Just saying. I’m happy you’re here too.

Danny: Well, I feel the same way.

Daniel: Well, listen. Anytime you’re ready to move out of the athletic club and into your honorary guest room, it’s waiting.

Lily: Which will have furniture soon, hopefully.

Daniel: Oh, I am gonna call sally first thing in the morning, I promise.

Lily: Okay.

Daniel: I will. That is assuming that you’re planning on staying in town.

Danny: I told you, I have no place I need to be. I wanna spend time with you, so yes, I am taking you up on that offer. I plan on staying for a while.

Daniel: Great. Fantastic.

Phyllis: Well, that’s great to hear.

Danny: Well, listen. We’re, uh, we’re gonna get out of here. It was great seeing you, lily.

Lily: Yeah, you too.

Phyllis: I’ll see you at work.

Daniel: Sounds like a plan. Good night.

Lily: Good night, guys.

Phyllis: Good night.

[ Danny sighing ]

Danny: I love you. Hey, congrats.

Daniel: Yup. Thank you.

Danny: Bye.

Lily: Bye.

[ Daniel exhaling ]

[ Lily chuckling ]

Daniel: Thank you so much for putting up with my parents, especially with my mom.

Lily: No, it was fine.

Daniel: No, it wasn’T. She just doesn’t know when to leave well enough alone.

Nikki: I’m relieved that you’ll think about taking this step, for everyone’s peace of mind.

[ Phone chiming ]

Victoria: Oh, it’s nate. He wants to meet. Something important that he needs to discuss.

Victor: Well, why don’t you go to it, okay?

Victoria: Thank you, dad.

Victor: I haven’t agreed to anything.

Victoria: I know, but you’re at least thinking about it, right? All I want are some definitive answers and I really feel like you should want the same. I only care about your health. Truly. I don’t have an ulterior motive, I just– I just want everything to be all right.

Victor: Uh-huh.

Nikki: Darling, you said that you would consider a professional opinion.

Victoria: And whoever you talk to, if they think that nicholas and i are overreacting or taking things too far, then I will let it go. I give you my word.

Nikki: Yes, I think we will all feel better once we know the facts.

Victoria: I love you.

Victor: I love you too.

Victoria: Just let me know what you decide.

Victor: Yeah, yeah.

Nikki: All right, darling. Uh, have a good evening. I’ll talk to you–

Victoria: I love you so much, all right? Goodbye.

Nikki: Bye. Your daughter is worried about you. You are lucid enough to see that, right?

Victor: She’s just upset that I took over the reins of the company again, that’s all.

Nikki: Victor, she has done everything you have ever wanted. The company was thriving under her leadership and then, you took that away from her. Of course, she feels slighted. She feels manipulated. That’s what you do.

Victor: If I hadn’t stepped in, you would have told her everything. That means I can no longer trust you.

Adam: So, does that mean that he sees us as vipers? Does he think that we’re trying to go after each other or is he imagining that we’re trying to attack him?

Nick: You’re reading too much into it.

Adam: No, I think the message is pretty clear.

Nick: He was doodling, adam. He probably doesn’t even realize what he was drawing.

Adam: Come on. You don’t believe that anymore than I do, okay? Look at this. The time and energy that went into this? This is not some random scribbling. This is a window into his brain.

Nick: How so?

Adam: He didn’t just mix up our names, nick. He forgot that I worked at newman. That he put me working for nate. And nikki’s in charge of newman media. He forgot that his own granddaughter died. You gonna pretend like that’s not serious?

Nick: All right, I’ll figure it out, okay? I will come up with a solution.

Adam: You know we cannot let this go on and the only reason that you’re hedging is because you don’t want me involved.

Nick: Well, you got that right.

Adam: You know, he’s my dad too.

Nick: That won’t stop you from using it to your advantage. You probably see this as some sort of poetic justice.

[ Adam sighing ]

Adam: You don’t trust that I’m trying to do what’s best for dad. And given my history, I understand. I mean, I’m sure you blame me for whatever confusion sally is going through.

Nick: I know how good you are at manipulating people, and this has nothing to do with you and sally. This is about you and dad, and your messed-up relationship. And the gamesmanship, and the back-and-forth. Like, remember when you messed his medication?

Adam: Okay, I am not that person anymore. And I’m making a genuine effort to prove that.

Nick: For a whole few weeks. Nicely done. Is it even real?

Adam: I’m sorry that it hasn’t been longer, so you can see that I’m sincere. Nick, I can’t just keep my head down and be a good soldier when something could be really wrong with dad. I know, we all see him as indestructible, it’s hard to accept.

Nick: Well, whatever it is, we will figure it out without you.

Adam: I’m already involved. And the best way to get through to dad, to help dad, is to show him his children are working together.

Nick: You’re just trying to maneuver your way back in.

Adam: No, I’m trying to give him what he has always wanted. What he’s desperately craved. Family unity. I mean, he even said that you were coming back to newman. Is that even true?

Nick: No, adam, I’m not. I have no idea why he would say that.

Adam: Because something is wrong. I know it’s hard to accept, but I’m telling you, this is the best thing that we can do for him.

Adam: Do you really hate me that much that you will refuse to work together, to do what’s best for our father?

Victoria: Hi.

Nate: Hey.

[ Victoria sighs ]

Victoria: I, um… I just came from the ranch. My mom reached out to me and said that she needed to talk.

Nate: About victor?

Victoria: I assume so. But before she could tell me what was on her mind, my dad came back from his nightly walk.

Nate: How’d he seem?

Victoria: He seemed fine. I mean… no sign of confusion. And when I brought up my concerns, and my idea for him to… to have somebody evaluate him, I mean… he resisted it.

Nate: I’m not surprised.

Victoria: There was, um… there was some sort of tension between him and my mother.

Nate: Maybe your mother’s been after him to get a professional opinion, too.

Victoria: Yeah, that makes sense. I mean, she was being extremely careful about what she said.

Nate: Victor is a proud man. He’s not used to people questioning his authority, much less his mental health.

Victoria: Yeah. I know that, I… I mean, I tried to put it… to him in a way that I thought would be more palatable, that… you know, that he should talk to someone, and relieve our concerns, and if I’ve blown everything out of proportion, that he can lord it over me, for the rest of time, never let me forget it.

Nate: And he agreed?

Victoria: He said he would consider it.

Nate: Maybe he’s, uh…

[ Sighs ] Maybe he’s afraid of what a specialist might find.

Victoria: That’s hard for me to imagine.

Nate: It’s hard to imagine any of this, given it’s victor.

Victoria: He’s so strong and confident, I could see him… going in and assuming that he could fool any specialist, whatever’s going on with him.

Nate: Exactly. So why hesitate this time?

Victoria: Because maybe this time, it’s different. Maybe he is… really scared about what’s going on in his mind.

Daniel: I just feel like it’s so obvious what my mother was trying to do and I hate that she put you in this position.

Lily: What position?

[ Daniel sighs ]

Daniel: I don’t know, you know, making you feel like you have to make allowances for her. Bringing up heather’s name every opportunity that she gets, or her acting like she’s so excited that heather and lucy are moving back to town.

Lily: Well, of course she’s excited. Her granddaughter is moving back here and then you get to be part of lucy’s life again. It’s wonderful.

[ Daniel sighs ]

Daniel: Yeah, but she’s using it to stir up trouble between the two of us.

Lily: Daniel, I don’t see it that way. I think she knows that she screwed up, and that it’s gonna take a long time to gain your trust again.

Daniel: This is not the way to do that. Not at all.

Lily: Daniel, I think she’s just happy that you’re staying in genoa city, and she’s pointing out other reasons to make it long-term.

Daniel: Well, I guess it’s nice that you can give her the benefit of the doubt, even though she’s the one that’s pushing for heather to move here.

Lily: Okay, look, all I saw tonight is that she’s very self-conscious around you, because she’s afraid of being judged, and she is being judged.

Daniel: With good reason. Yeah, she is.

Lily: No, not about this. Not by me.

Daniel: So, you really didn’t see what she was oh so subtly trying to do tonight?

Lily: Okay, daniel, I think you’re the one with the problem.

Daniel: What are you talking about?

Lily: You’re the one who’s making this about heather.

Danny: And a tea with honey, thanks.

[ Phyllis sighs ]

Phyllis: Well… that went well, right?

Danny: Yeah. Yeah, it did. It was a really, uh… it was a really nice evening.

Phyllis: Yeah, I’m really proud of our son, how he’s turned his life around.

Danny: Me, too. And he and lily, they– well… they seem really happy together.

Phyllis: Oh. I’ll be honest, I don’t see it.

Danny: Oh, come on. Why not?

[ Phyllis chuckles ]

Phyllis: Many reasons.

Danny: Careful, phyllis.

Phyllis: What?

Danny: You’re in the process of rebuilding your trust with daniel.

Danny: You’re not gonna score any points meddling in his relationship.

Phyllis: I’m not meddling. Oh, my goodness, I’m not meddling. It’s an observation, that’s all. That’s it. That’s what I see.

Danny: Uh-huh.

Phyllis: I like lily.

Danny: Yeah, right.

Phyllis: Yeah.

Danny: But you just don’t like them together.

Phyllis: Well, I was very nice to her tonight.

Danny: Uh, nice-ish.

Phyllis: I was nice to her. Listen, they have a lot of history, I know.

Danny: Yeah, they were in love once. Passionately.

Phyllis: Yes, and it didn’t work out. For reasons.

Danny: That doesn’t mean it will happen this time.

Phyllis: I just don’T… I don’t want to see our son get his heart broken, that’s all.

[ Danny sighs ]

Danny: Couples do have second chances that work out, you know.

Phyllis: Yes, I do. Thanks for reminding me. You’re a very positive influence to have… in someone’s life who needs it.

[ Danny chuckles ]

Danny: Well, I’M… happy to oblige.

Victoria: You know, my whole entire life, my father has been like this mythic figure, almost. Like, he’s always winning, he’s always… finding a way. So, it’s hard for me to imagine him not thinking that he’s in complete control. I’m sorry, I keep dragging you into my family issues.

Nate: No, no. No need to apologize.

Victoria: So, what is it that you wanted to talk to me about?

Nate: It has to do with your family issues. I know you’ve been totally focused on your father’s health, as you should be. So, I’ve made it a priority to keep an eye on adam.

Victoria: If anyone would take advantage of this situation, any perceived weakness, that would definitely be my brother.

Nate: And I think he’s going there.

Victoria: Why? What did he do? I found him sitting behind victor’s desk, looking rather comfortable. Like he owned the place.

Nikki: I was not going to tell victoria that you’re faking this mental decline.

Victor: You were on the verge, weren’t you?

Nikki: Was I tempted? Absolutely. And as much as I dislike what you’re doing, I would never betray your trust. Victor, please. You have to hear what I’m saying and consider the consequences of what you’re doing.

Victor: I know what I’m doing and soon enough I’ll find out which one of my children is ready to betray me.

Nikki: It’s not worth the pain it’s causing.

[ Nikki scoffs ]

Nikki: Nicholas is so distraught, he will never let on, victoria’s beside herself. She worships you. And she is terrified that she might lose you.

Nick: Well, I do admit, you… sound sincere.

Adam: Well, just give me a chance to prove that I am. At least admit that what I’m saying, it makes sense.

Nick: Ever since the day dad announced his intention to step back in as ceo, my mom’s been very concerned about him taking all this on.

Adam: Well, yeah, on top of the pressure of running the company, he’s just been consumed with trying to get all of us to come back to be a part of what he created.

Nick: Which you fought him every step of the way, because the only thing you cared about, adam, was what you wanted, what you felt like you deserved.

Adam: Yes. I did. I admitted that. But I want to do what is right, because dad is not well. So taking care of him has to be our top priority, regardless of you feel about me, personally.

[ Nick sighs ]

Adam: Come on, what’s going on inside your mind? You know what this means, don’t you?

[ Nick sighs ]

Nick: I’ll handle it. You stay out of it.

Daniel: You know, I’m not the one who kept bringing up heather’s name in the conversation tonight. I just brought it up now because I want to apologize for how my mother was acting.

Lily: Look at how worked up you’re getting just talking about her.

Daniel: Because I can’t get my mom to back off. I mean, heather told me that she wanted us to be back together.

Lily: Even if that’s true, so what?

[ Daniel chuckles ]

Daniel: It’s obnoxious, lily, and it’s manipulative.

Lily: Yeah, that is your mother. I mean, I’m gonna pretend that it doesn’t bother me that you’re more upset about this than I am.

Daniel: Okay, look, I am… I am upset because this, because this, right here, this is exactly what my mother wants. She wants heather to be an issue for us.

Lily: Then stop making her one.

[ Daniel sighs ]

Daniel: I’m not. I’m not. She’s not.

Phyllis: Listen to you… wild danny romalotti, dispensing all this wisdom.

[ Phyllis chuckles ]

Danny: Yes, only to a select few.

Phyllis: Oh, I’m honored. I’m honored. It felt really good, being with you tonight, with our son.

Danny: Yeah, for me too.

Phyllis: Oh. Well… I have an early morning tomorrow. I should get home.

Danny: Yeah. I’m just gonna… hang out a bit, finish my tea. Good night, phyllis.

Christine: Danny.

Danny: Hi.

Nate: I think adam is up to something. And it didn’t take long for him to revert to his old ways.

Victoria: I never bought his reform act anyway. So, what did he say when you walked in and caught him sitting in my dad’s chair?

Nate: That your father wanted him to grab some documents.

Victoria: What documents?

Nate: Wouldn’t share. Said it was personal.

Victoria: Are you buying that?

Nate: Nope.

Victoria: Well, what do you think he’s after?

Nate: No idea. But I remembered an earlier conversation we’d had. I had mentioned some of the things you and i witnessed with victor. His first response was: We need to look out for the company.

Victoria: There is no question that he’s going to try to use my father’s condition against him.

[ Adam sighs ]

[ Adam clears throat ]

Adam: Hi, dr. Skelton, uh, it’s adam newman. I would like to meet with you. Uh, I’m gonna need your help. No, it’s not me. It’s my father.

Victor: Sweetheart… I needed to do this to be certain.

Nikki: Victor, you are punishing all of your children with this stunt. When you need to focus on adam.

Victor: Yeah, adam seems to be the most obvious one to use this time to come after me.

Nick: Dad, I’m onto you. Time to come clean.

Claire: I don’t want to fall behind.

Nick: I wasn’t sure about her motives. That’s all changed.

Nick: I just want to get your professional take. Um, I hate even saying this out loud. I think there’s something wrong with my dad. Trelegy for copd. Birds flyin’ high, you kn ow how I feel. Breeze driftin’ on by… …you know how I feel take this one step at a time because now you really have me worried about victor and you. You don’t scare easily. What have you noticed?

Nick: All right. Some of this is firsthand. Let me just say that upfront. Um, a lot of it’s gotten back to me, so I can’t swear that it’s accurate, but I do believe it.

Sharon: Understood. Go ahead.

Nick: Dad made a comment about victoria taking over newman media, not mom. He backtracked, but then he thought that adam and sally were still having a baby.

Sharon: Wow, that is scary.

Nick: Then, he called adam “nicholas.”

Sharon: Has anyone corrected him?

Nick: I mean, I definitely have. I think the others have too. How he reacts to it is a toss-up. I mean, he could be completely pissed off and in total denial, shrug his shoulders and just walk away. Other times, he’s completely lucid.

Sharon: So, it sounds like the issues that victor’s having are memory-related.

Nick: Yeah. I mean, physically he’s fine. As good as ever. It’s just these memory lapses and every time they happen, they’re a complete shock because it is unlike him.

Sharon: Have you spoken to nikki about this?

Nick: Yeah, vic and I tried, um, you know. Mom was resistant. So, she’s either in denial or she sees it and she doesn’t want to talk about it.

Sharon: Nikki would insist on victor getting help if she really thought he needed it. So, she maybe truly doesn’t believe there is a problem.

Nick: Yeah, I don’t know. Vic and I tried to talk to dad.

Sharon: And that didn’t go well?

Nick: No, of course not.

Sharon: Has he acknowledged any of this?

Nick: No, he just flew into a rage and accused me and vic of trying to stab him in the back. Then he kicked us out of his office.

Sharon: Memory issues, emotional volatility, confusion.

Nick: So, what do you think it could be? Like alzheimer’s? Dementia? Are we just overreacting to someone who’s just naturally getting older?

Sharon: I wouldn’t begin to speculate, you know, unless I spoke to victor myself. And even then, I’m not a specialist. You know, this is way out of my field.

Nick: I know. Can you at least tell me where we should go from here?

Victor: Nate hastings tells me that you’re doing a damn good job working for him. Makes me very proud of you.

Adam: Oh.

Victor: Yeah.

Adam: Well, that’s nice to hear. But honestly, it’s– it’s not that hard of a job.

Victor: Oh, yeah?

Adam: Nate refuses to give me any work that involves sensitive newman business because he thinks I’m gonna misuse it. He makes no secret that he doesn’t trust me.

Victor: Well, can you blame him?

Adam: No, not really. Can I tell you something off the record?

Victor: Of course.

Adam: Frankly, I don’t think nate cares about protecting newman business. I think it’s just about reminding me that I’m under his thumb.

Victor: Hm. Interesting. Huh. Now, do you mind if I tell you something? Just between the two of us?

Adam: Yeah, of course. What is it?

Victor: I have a very strong suspicion that nate hastings is conspiring with victoria to undermine me. To unseat me. To push me out of my ceo chair so that she can take over again and run the damn company.

Chloe: Well, would you please say something? I can’t help if I don’t know what’s going on.

Sally: Okay, fine. Um, nick has been avoiding me.

Chloe: Okay. Um, that might turn out to be a good thing.

Sally: How in the world is nick avoiding me a good thing?

Chloe: Just let him cool down. You know, give him some time to miss you. The two of you can’t talk through things rationally when he’s all worked up.

Sally: Yeah, but this doesn’t feel like a break or a cooling down period. This feels like the end.

Chloe: No, that’s just because you’re scared, so you’re going to the worst case scenario.

Sally: You weren’t there, chloe. You didn’t see the look in his eyes or hear the tone in his voice. For nick, there’s no way forward for us.

Chloe: Yeah, well, I– I refuse to believe that. It– don’t just freak out over something that hasn’t even happened yet.

Sally: Well, I’d say it kind of has happened.

Chloe: No, he is furious at adam. It’s his brother who overstepped and once he realizes that, things will change and the two of you will be able to talk.

Sally: It’s more than that, chloe. Nick is convinced that I have some deep, unresolved feelings for adam and he’s not going to compete with that.

Chloe: Okay. So then convince him that’s not the case. Because it’s not, right? No. Sally, absolutely not.

Nikki: So, how are you settling in?

Claire: It’s a process.

Nikki: Well, at least you already know genoa city from the summers that you spent here during your college years.

Claire: That’s been a huge help, yes.

Nikki: Is it feeling a bit more like home?

Claire: Slowly, but surely. I’m finally finding my way around to the places I don’t already know without constantly consulting my gps, which is huge.

Nikki: Have you made any new friends? What about that friend of yours from college? Have you been able to connect with her?

Claire: We’ve been playing phone tag, but I’m sure we’ll connect one of these days.

Nikki: Oh, that’ll be good for you when you do.

Claire: In the meantime, yes, I’m very happy to say I’ve made some new friends that I’m really enjoying. In fact, I’m actually going out for drinks with a few of them tonight.

Nikki: Oh, that’s great. I– I admit it, I am selfish. I want you to love being here so you don’t get any ideas about leaving.

Claire: When I have a dream job working for a woman I couldn’t admire more, I’m not about to walk away from that.

Nikki: Thank you. For that and for everything you have done for me since you’ve been here.

Claire: I’m the grateful one. You have given me an amazing opportunity.

Nikki: Only because you deserve it. All right, you have done more than enough work today, so go on, get out of here.

Claire: Correction, nikki. It’s actually time for you to get out of here. You head home and I’ll lock up.

Nikki: Are you sure?

Claire: Positive. I’ll see you first thing in the morning.

[ Nikki sighing ]

Nikki: You are an angel. Thank you and have a wonderful time with your new friends tonight.

Sally: I shouldn’t have said anything.

Chloe: No, no, no, no, no. No, I’m sorry. No more judgment.

Sally: Okay. That’s a lie.

Chloe: No, I– I promise I won’t say a negative word. Please just tell me, how are you feeling?

Sally: Okay. Just so you know, adam and I had it out. I completely tore into him for all the ways that he’s messed up my life.

Chloe: Good, good for you.

Sally: But before you get too proud of me.

[ Sally sighing ] I also admitted something to him I probably shouldn’t have.

Chloe: Okay.

Sally: I told him the reason that I’ve been feeling all this so deeply is because I haven’t been able to let him go. Okay. You have zero poker face, so you might as well just yell at me.

Chloe: You gave him exactly what he wanted. He wanted to get inside your head and look, mission accomplished. Now, you gave him an opening and now, he will continue to hound you. Even though you were too good for him. Even though he broke your heart. Even though he is a terrible person. Not even a person, I don’t think. And you know what a good, decent, trustworthy, not to mention, sexy man, nick is. Why would you give adam all that power?

Sally: ‘Cause I had to be honest with him.

Chloe: Why? Why? Adam doesn’t understand honesty? It’s like you gave him a free pass to be adam.

Sally: Okay. Well, it’s too late now. It’s out.

[ Chloe groaning ]

Chloe: Okay. Life lesson. Even though you’re feeling something doesn’t mean you need to always let someone know it. Because he is adam, he will do everything he can to make you fall for him again. And then, because he’s adam, he will break your heart.

Sharon: I guess I could have a casual, unassuming conversation with victor. Obviously, I’m more objective than you are and I know him very well. I’d be able to tell if something was off with him. And then that will give me a better sense of what you and victoria are worried about.

Nick: That’d be great. You know, we could set up a time and place for you two to just run into each other and then you can take it from there.

Sharon: Perfect. And don’t worry, I’ll make sure that victor doesn’t feel like he’s being interrogated. I know how to handle victor newman.

Nick: Thank you so much. I’m extremely grateful and I know my mom and victoria will be too. In the meantime, I’ve promised them both that I will devote a lot more of my time to checking in with dad and monitoring the situation.

Sharon: Mm-hmm.

Nick: You don’t think that’s a good idea?

Sharon: Oh, no, I– I think that’s a very good idea. I don’t mean to sound self-involved, especially at a time like this, but do you think that– that will leave you enough time and energy to focus on our business launch?

Nick: Oh, you don’t have to worry about that, sharon. I’m not gonna leave you in the lurch. I’m still committed to our company. I’m very excited about its future. Although I have to say, I don’t doubt for one minute that you could brilliantly do the thing on your own, if it ever came to that.

Sharon: That’s nice of you to say. But part of the fun of doing this is the fact that we’re doing it together.

Nick: Same for me. Don’t worry. Looking out for my dad is not going to interfere in this new adventure we’re starting together. Or pull me back to newman enterprises.

Adam: Well, I– you, you know that victoria is insulted. You demoted her. And nate, um, he’s definitely ambitious.

Victor: Then, you agree. They’re trying to take me down.

Adam: No, no, no, I– I did not say that. But do I think that she wants her title back? Of course, she wants her title back. And nate will go along with anything that she says, but why do you think that they’re actively pursuing that?

Victor: I don’t know. I overheard some whisperings, you know. She said that she was very upset about having been demoted by me. And nate, instead of calming her down, he encouraged her. I’m convinced they’re trying to prove that I am, you know, I’ve lost my marbles. I’m incapacitated.

Adam: Well you– we all make little mistakes, call people by the wrong name, stuff like that.

Victor: Well, what do you think about that?

[ Adam sighing ]

Adam: I– I– I don’t want to say anything that will um, demean victoria.

Victor: No, no, tell me honestly. What do you think?

Adam: Victoria was furious when you announced that you were gonna come back.

Victor: Yeah.

Adam: So yeah, she’s probably trying to undermine you. She’s probably even planning a coup.

Victor: Okay.

Adam: She’s smart. She’s shrewd, she’s ambitious. Just like nate. So yes, the two of them teaming up is a real possibility.

Victor: Yeah. That’s what I am fearing. I’m just very glad that I talked to nicholas and he said that he might come and join me again at newman enterprises to keep an eye on both of them.

Adam: When did nick reconsider coming back to newman?

Victor: Mm-hmm. A while ago, I mean, you don’t seem happy to hear that.

Adam: I’m– I’m not. I mean, there’s already been so many changes around that place already. I don’t even know why he would want to show his face at newman enterprises again. He– he was pissed when victoria shoved him out of the way to bring in nate. Especially now, sharon and he started their own company. Unless… unless he has his own agenda. Do you know what brought this on?

Victor: Yeah. Victoria managed to convince nicholas that, you know, their father is losing it. Unstable enough not to be able to run his company.

Adam: Wow, they, uh, are really coming at you from all sides, dad.

Victor: Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Breaks my heart. My own two children conspiring against me. For the stupid, absurd reason that I’m losing it mentally.

Adam: Well, no one’s tougher, sharper and smarter than you are, pop. Must sting that your kids think otherwise. I’m really sorry about that. And might I add, shame on them both.

Victor: Well, I need allies, you know. I really do. Will you be one of them?

Adam: Of course, I will.

Victor: Good.

Adam: You know, I meant it when I said I learned my lesson. So whatever you need, whatever happens, I’m on your team. I’ve got your back.

Victor: I knew I could count on you.

Sharon: You went from dealing with the cameron nightmare, the tragic loss of the baby and now this? You can’t catch a break.

Nick: Yeah. Maybe, I’m the problem. Nick newman: Bad luck charm. That’s all right. I know everything’s gonna get better once I figure out what’s going on with my dad.

Sharon: You and I both know that this is about more than just your dad. You suddenly don’t have sally to talk to or lean on. Adam said something happened.

Nick: It didn’t work. That’s what happened. And I don’t want to think about it and I certainly don’t want to talk about it. I have too much going on in my life to be focusing on what went wrong with sally.

Sharon: Do you want some advice?

Nick: No, but I know you’re gonna give it to me anyway.

Sharon: If you are carrying around unresolved issues about your relationship, they are going to eat away at you. You have to deal with them right away before they all blow up and things get worse.

Nick: I’m not sure I understand what you’re saying. Is your advice that I should try and work things out with sally?

Sally: Well, nick had just walked out on me and I was furious and hurt and I had this jumble in my brain and then– and then adam said, “I screwed up, but I always do, so what is different this time?” And I just blurted out what I felt. And I regretted it the second the words came out.

Chloe: Well, at least you’re still sane enough to know that you screwed up. Unfortunately, adam will hold on to those words for dear life.

Sally: Yeah, I get it. I just have no idea what to do.

Chloe: Nothing. Just forget it ever even happened.

Sally: But I can’t unsay it.

Chloe: Well, it doesn’t mean that you have to follow through on it. And for god’s sake, please go fix things with nick.

Sally: It’s not that simple.

Chloe: Well, nothing worth fixing ever is. Don’t let adam cost you someone who is so valuable to you, on so many levels. If you let nick slip away, you won’t just potentially lose your new business. You will also lose the best man you’ve probably ever known. If your moderate to severe crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis symptoms are stopping you in your tracks…

Nick: I’m not the problem. Sally is still in love with adam. What is there to work out?

Sharon: Has she said that or have you just decided that you know how she feels?

Nick: She didn’t have to, not with words. It’s there. You know how it is with adam and the pull he has on you.

Sharon: Yes, I do. And I also know that what I once thought was love with him sometimes was actually something else. Something very complicated and very unhealthy for everyone.

Nick: But it kept you attached to him. Just like sally is right now and she doesn’t want to admit it. She knows in her head that being in love with him is a bad idea, but it’s still clearly there and I don’t want to compete with it. It’s something she has to work out. In the meantime, I gotta move on.

Sharon: Well, I’m sorry that things turned out like this, for both of you.

Nick: Yeah. Well, um, my focus right now is my dad and getting our business off the ground.

Sharon: Oh, speaking of business. Does moving on from sally mean that you will also be moving on from the new company that you were planning to fund for her? Are you still going to go ahead with that or have you rescinded your offer?

Nick: I don’t know. It’s a tough one. On one hand, it keeps me tied to her. On the other, this was my idea, you know. I made this commitment to her and pulling the funding just because things didn’t work out with us seems like a very adam thing to do.

Sharon: Okay. Well, I don’t know, sally that well, but if the two of you haven’t talked about it, I imagine she’s probably assuming you are going to pull the plug and she’s about to lose everything. So, maybe you at least owe her a conversation so that she isn’t sitting there worried that she’s about to lose everything in her life without any warning.

Nick: You’re right. You’re right. The last thing I want to do is look back on this situation someday and regret how I handled it. Thanks. Hey, it’s me. Can we meet?

Sally: Of course. Yeah, whenever, wherever you want. Okay. Yeah, I– I will be there. And nick, thank you for calling.

[ Sally sighing ] Okay. Well, what do you know?

Chloe: And see? That is a good guy. Doesn’t play games. Isn’t afraid to have a conversation like an adult. This is a really good sign, don’t you think?

Sally: Well, the way my life’s been going, I– I’m afraid to get my hopes up, but one way or another, at least I will know more than I know now after I talk with him. All right, let’s get going because, oh, I have a meeting with nick newman that could change my whole life.

Chloe: Well, fingers crossed, my friend.

Sally: Okay.

Nikki: I am so fortunate that claire came into my life. She is so smart and she’s interested in the business. God knows she’s on top of everything. And calm, you know, there’s no drama because… oh, it’s happened again. I’m talking to myself, aren’t I?

Victor: Oh, sorry, sweetheart. No, not at all. I– I was listening. Um… something about claire and how you liked her and how efficient she was and all that, right?

Nikki: Yeah.

Victor: Sorry, but I had a discussion with adam earlier.

Nikki: And?

Victor: I planted the idea in his head that victoria may be plotting against me, with nate’s help.

Nikki: I’m sure he loved hearing that.

Victor: Well, he didn’t make it too obvious that he was happy about that. But he did say that he thought I was justified in suspecting that victoria was indeed plotting against me. And he quickly pledged his allegiance to me.

Nikki: Of course, he did.

Victor: Yeah. Well, too quickly, but he was trying to be convincing.

Nikki: Victor, do I need to tell you again how much I hate this plan of yours? People will be hurt, including you. No matter how it ends, you’re gonna find out things you don’t want to know.

Victor: Maybe it’s not what I want to know, it’s what I need to know, you know. I need to find out who is gonna make the first move. Victoria or adam. But I’m beginning to have a feeling I will soon find out.

Adam: Sally.

Sally: Adam.

Adam: I, uh, was gonna call, but I figured you needed some time.

Sally: You were right.

Adam: Gotta say, it’s nicer to see you in person though.

Sally: Please don’T.

Adam: Well, I can’t lie. I, um, I can’t get what you said out of my mind.

Sally: Okay. Well, try really hard because I had no business saying any of those things to you, except one. There is no future for us. So, just hold on to that, will you? Please?

Adam: Is– is nick here to meet you?

Sally: Oh, yes, he is.

Adam: Why?

Sally: It’s none of your concern.

Adam: Sally, he abandoned you because of his bruised ego. Can you really stay in a relationship with him after you admitted how you feel about me?

Sally: I am really glad you asked that. So, people hold on to the past for all sorts of reasons and I shared a private thought with you in a moment of confusion. That was a mistake. So, if you respect me at all, you will just leave it alone.

Adam: Sally, I respect you more than you respect yourself. You– you think that these feelings are bad or they’re wrong? Or this is some sign that you’re messed up, but I know that the love that we had, it deserves a chance.

Sally: I’m not having this conversation with you. Not now. Not ever. Okay? Goodbye, adam.

Adam: Oh, well then, I guess that’s that.

[ Sally sighing ]

Sally: Thank you for meeting with me. I was hoping that you would ’cause we have a lot to discuss.

Nick: We don’t have to talk about anything personal. It’s strictly a professional conversation about your–

[ Nick breathing deeply ] About your business startup. Nothing more.

Sally: I see. So in other words, you’re pulling the plug. I get it. You have lost faith in that too.

Nikki: Darling, I don’t deny that victoria was furious when you announced you were coming back to newman and demoted her to co-ceo, but you’re still her father. She still adores you. She would never do anything to betray you. Trust me. If anyone is plotting against you, it’s adam.

Victor: Trust me. I’ll find out soon enough.

Nick: Sally, I’m not pulling out of your business.

Sally: You’re not?

Nick: No. I’ll admit it. I did think about it, but that’s not who I am. And I wanted to tell you that in person. I made a financial commitment to you and I will honor it. Yes, things have changed with us, but one thing that hasn’t changed is my belief in your talent and your potential. So, I’m good, no matter how off track our relationship has gotten.

Sally: How did things get so off track between us?

Nick: Like I said, we don’t have to talk about that. But I will say, it’s not because of me. I was very excited about our relationship. Where it was going and what it could be. Every day, I was hoping and praying that adam would just fade away, but he never did. He was always there. Sally, from someone who deeply cares about you, you need to figure out what you want in life or you’re never gonna be happy.

Sally: I’ve just been so confused. So much has happened.

Nick: I hate to sound cold, but that is not on me. I knew exactly what I wanted. It was your confusion, it has to be worked out. And I just have so much going on in my life. I can’t keep doing this with you.

[ Adam sighing ]

Adam: What? What the hell is going on with you, dad?
