Well, I meant it when I said that Doug was transformed. Why not you? I mean, it’s not how you start. It’s how you finish. He got out of prison, came to Salem, met our family, and was determined to change his life. And he did. Because he was strong and he was resilient and, as it turned out, he had an exceptionally kind heart.

Mm.

Darling, you have those qualities too.

I love you so much. So glad you’re here, because just for a minute there, I forgot about what’s next: the memorial.

Do you think you will be able to– to attend?

Of course. I wouldn’t miss it.

I know how difficult a time this is for you, losing the love of your life, so I want you to know that I’m here for you, now and always.

How have you been, Liz?

I’m fine. I’m well. And I gather you’re not that delighted to see me, Marie.

You gather correctly, especially not here in this town square named after my parents.

Well, for the record, I thought the world of your parents. It was you I couldn’t stand.

I’m glad you climbed through the bedroom window on your way to the memorial service. [both chuckle] Now, why don’t you freshen up? I’ll go downstairs. And then you come downstairs. And, oh, this is so exciting. It’s so wonderful. I’ll introduce you to your family. [both laugh]

It was a piece of cake, honestly. [laughs]

You’re amazing.

How did you do that?

She’s a magician, this one.

OK, all right, enough with the compliments. Let’s just see what’s in this thing.

So I don’t have to look forward to your shooting me in another jealous rage?

Oh, good God, Marie, I mean, that was decades ago. You’re gonna relitigate that? You know damn well it was an accident. I thought you were an intruder.

The only intruder in that room was you. You slept with my husband in our bed. And when I came home, you shot me.

Well, gee, I do recall that. In fact, I went to prison for it. It’s kind of emblazoned in my brain.

Yeah, yeah, I was just listening to “Friends and Lovers” on my phone. It’s such a beautiful song. And that Liz Chandler, what a voice, man.

I’m sure it reminds you of when you and Shawn were first together.

Yeah, yeah. Yeah, knowing I’m gonna see him today, it’s just– it’s just bringing up a lot of emotions. I don’t know, maybe I should have told him I was coming.

I think it’s fine. I think he’ll be glad to see you.

I hope so. But I’m gonna– I’m gonna keep my distance. I’m gonna let him have his time with his family.

That’s because they are crazy about Chanel and Johnny. You know, I’m so grateful for them for watching the twins. I mean, it gives me– gives me time to be there for my grandma.

Yeah. It’s so wonderful how close you and Julie are, considering that you just met her as an adult.

Yeah, well, I am lucky to have her in my life. And I know, as tough as this time must be for her, losing the love of her life, that she’s surrounded by family.

Well, I will take that as the highest compliment. Speaking of Mom, Grandma Julie, I hope you know how badly she wanted to be here.

I know. We spoke on the phone last night. We agreed she’s where she belongs, with your father.

And this is Shawn, Ciara’s brother.

Shawn-Douglas, I’ve heard so much about you.

It’s nice to meet you.

And you remember Bill’s little girl?

Oh, it’s been far too long, cousin. And is this your husband?

Oh, well, this is a time capsule that Gram hid behind the mantel way back in the ’60s.

Those are some serious diamonds.

Yeah.

This is my grandmother’s necklace. My mother gave it to her as a birthday gift.

I have never seen her wear them.

Oh, no. She thought it was too regal for Salem.

That sounds like Gram.

I always wondered what happened to it.

Well, now you know.

Now I know a lot of things. Well, I’d love to go through every single thing with all of you, but… it’s time.

Time to honor my husband with a memorial and to say goodbye.

Oh, for heaven sakes, can we let bygones be bygones, especially bygones that are almost a half a century ago? I mean, can we just possibly focus on the fact that we’re together and we’re celebrating– we’re celebrating the life of Doug Williams, a man that we all admire…

Mm.

And we all respected.

Think we can do that?

Well, how mature of you both to finally let go of grievances from the ’80s. OK, so how about a truce, ladies?

Oh. Oh, hello, everyone. This is my brother, Steve Olson, and… thank you, all of you, for coming.

Julie, apparently the priest is ready to start whenever you are.

Good afternoon. I would like to welcome you to the celebration of the life of Douglas Williams, a man beloved by so many. I knew him as a devoted parishioner. You knew him as a friend or as a part of your family. But we all knew him as an extraordinary man– kind, generous, gifted in so many ways– a man who brightened the lives of all of us here and many who couldn’t be here. And to begin, I would like to call up Doug’s grandson Shawn-Douglas Brady to read Scripture.

“My Father’s house has many rooms. “If that were not so, “would I have not told you that I am going “to prepare a place for you? “And if I go and prepare a place for you, “I will come back and take you to be with me, that you also may be where I am.”

Thank you, Shawn-Douglas, for that reading from the book of John. Now I would like to call Doug’s granddaughter, Ciara, to share something with you all.

[sighs] This is one of my Grandpa Doug’s favorite poems. It is by Henry Van Dyke, and it is called “Gone From My Sight.” “I am standing upon the seashore. “The ship at my side spreads her white sails “to the moving breeze and starts for the blue ocean. “She’s an object of beauty and strength. “I stand and watch her until, at length, “she hangs like a speck of white cloud “just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other. “Then someone at my side says, ‘There, she is gone.’ “Gone where? “Gone from my sight. That is all. “She is just as large in mast, hull, and spar “as she was when she left my side. “And she’s just as able to bear her load “of living freight to her destined port. “Her diminished size is in me, not in her. “And just at the moment when someone says, “‘There, she is gone,’ “there are other eyes watching her coming “and other voices ready to take up the glad shout, ‘Here she comes!'”

And now we will hear a eulogy from Doug’s beloved wife, Julie.

Thank you. The look of love, Doug Williams had it and made the world shine with it, especially when he looked at us. My husband’s real name was Brent Douglas. He was raised in an orphanage until he ran away at age 4… [chuckles] And made the best of it, living off his charm and his wit. During World War II, he joined the navy and trained to be a fighter pilot. The service taught him how to navigate by air and sea, to fly a Steerman– open cockpit, goggles, long scarf, just as you’d imagine. He learned to dive off a 50-foot platform and swim five miles in one go, to survive for three days on a deserted beach without food or water, and how to kill a man with his bare hands. Not planning to use these skills in civilian life, he was happy to muster out of the navy 24 hours after Japan surrendered. But he loved the flying. He’d dream of it. He’d wake up with such a smile. After the war, he discovered he had a fine singing voice. And he flirted with show business… And finance. Here are some of the marvelous things he accomplished in the years he was among us. He raised an incredible daughter, our beloved Hope. And he opened a club named Doug’s Place, unforgettable for its music, for its warmth, for its class.

[somber music] He became the mayor of Salem and the captain of my heart. Here are some of his favorite things besides chocolate. [chuckles]

Italy. Grand opera. Lyrics. Puns of his own composing. Family dinners. Tap dancing. Up tunes. New places to go. Old songs to sing. The Dodgers. [laughs] New York City. Serenades. Sunshine in the morning. Performing. Poached eggs. [laughs] “The Count of Monte Cristo” and “Casablanca.” Every Christmas card that had photos of his friends and family. Piles of sheet music. [laughs] The morning sports page and an old safari jacket that he wore on every continent.

Red roses, red lips… [laughs] Red sauces, red wine, and an Indian ruby that he gave to me.

---

He took me to the Taj Mahal. He took me to the pyramids. He took me to the Great Wall of China.

---

And he took me to paradise with every kiss.

---

Songs he composed– “Ramshackle Daddy,” “Happy New Year to You,” “I Love to Tap,” and “I’ve Got the World By the Tail.” Joyful tunes, joyful tunes from a heart that was just pounding with the rhythm of life. And please let me tell you, his mind and his spirit were unchanging until too many happy birthdays stole all his strength away.

What gifts he had, my sweetest of sweethearts, my ageless, beautiful troubadour.

---

“My love is like a red, red rose “that’s sweetly sprung in June. “My love is like a melody that’s sweetly played in tune.”

---

So what will people remember about this exuberant, accomplished gentleman? Will it be the performances? Will it be the music? Will it be all those happy times? Besides his talent, you all spoke of his kindness. You know, in Webster’s dictionary, the word “kind” means gentle and generous. And that’s it. That’s it exactly.

---

He treated all strangers as potential friends, never returning unkindness with a– with a wry or cynical remark.

---

[sighs] Why did we love him so much? Because he saw us. He really saw us. Doug gave everyone, a visitor at the door or a troubled grandchild, this greeting. It was always smiling, and it was full of optimistic expectation. What he saw in us was something wonderful.

---

And we became, in his company, as wonderful as we all want to be.

---

No surprise, his favorite movie was “Love, Actually.” [laughter] He passionately reached out to people his whole life with a song, with a story, and that– [sighs] That look of love, love that transcends time and lifts us all into the light, where creation never ends and we are shining too.

---

Let us hold fast to that which is good, render to no person evil for evil, strengthen the fainthearted, support the weak, help the needy and the afflicted, and honor all people. Let us serve and love the Lord, rejoicing in the power of his spirit. And may God’s blessing be upon us and remain with us always. Amen. all: Amen.

And now to close our service, one of Doug’s dear friends, Liz Chandler, will lead us in one of his favorite songs.

I always knew how much they loved each other, yeah, and how much he loved his family. I did not know that he had joined the navy and trained as a fighter pilot.

What a life. What a legend.

Yeah.

Anyway, were you–were you able to–to reach Shawn?

No. No, I wanted to give him some space to be with his family.

You know, you’re his family too.

Well, he was grieving his grandfather. And anyway, I don’t think he wanted to talk to me.

I don’t believe that. Shawn still loves you. OK, well, I think I’m going to try to reach Shane. I would like to see if he can contact John and… let him know that we’ve lost Doug.

OK, good. If you do reach Dad, will you please give him my love?

Oh, yes. Mwah.

You know, I can just picture Doug’s reaction to that memorial service. [chuckles] Oh. Oh, he would be so proud, oh…

Especially of Julie. Oh, her strength.

That eulogy, oh, God– God only knows how she got through it. But, oh, boy, she hit it out of the park.

She did. She did.

Mm-hmm.

Well, we got the twins down.

Oh, well, that was fast.

[laughs]

I sang them one of Doug’s songs, one that he used to sing to them. I did my best. [laughter]

Oh, I’m sure you did. And now it’s time for a toast.

She did. I saw her do it before we left for the service.

That’s what I thought. Me too. But it’s not in here. Where could it have gone?

[sighs] Grandma, you sly old dog. Who knew the treasure you were holding in that house?

The old me would have been tempted mightily by that diamond necklace. But…I’m a changed man.

Two weeks, six days, four hours, and a few minutes, and then look out, world– or should I say Salem– because here I come.

[knock at door]

Hello, Marlena. [laughs]

Liz Chandler? Is it you?

It’s been a long time.

Ah!

[both laugh] Oh, no.

Oh, yes.

[laughs]

Oh!

[somber music]

[crying]

Maggie.

Marie Horton, as I live and breathe. Oh.

[laughs]

That’s a good-looking family, don’t you think?

---

Lucas. Oh, my gosh. I am so glad to see you, little brother.

I had to be here, you know, for Julie.

Yeah. She’s gonna be so happy to see you. She just really–really needs her family right now.

Yeah. How’s she holding up?

As well as can be expected. Lucas, I just– you–you share the same bed with somebody for so many years. I can only imagine how Julie’s gonna feel when she wakes up and her sweet husband is not beside her.

I imagine you make quite an impression on every woman who comes to know you. You are the kind of a man that’s very difficult to forget, Doug.

Very difficult to– to ever forget.

I love this house so much. No matter how much time goes by– it could be a month, year, day, or an hour– it doesn’t matter.

When Doug was here, he’d go out of his way, and he’d give me a big, huge hug every time.

[sniffles]

He did give great hugs, didn’t he?

The best, the best hugs. You could just feel how much he loved you and his energy. When I found out I was a Horton, I thought I was the black sheep of the Horton family, but Doug would never make me feel that way. He would–he would always go out of his way to give me a huge hug and make me feel like I belonged, like he was really proud I was part of the family.

Family meant everything to Doug.

---

Hey, you two. Can we get in on some of that family love?

Oh, Liz, it is so good to see you again. How–how long has it been?

Oh, let’s see. Ha! I left Salem in 986, so it’s been… both: A long time.

 

[laughs] A lot to catch up on.

Yes, but let me just tell you, I’m so– I’m so pleased you came back for Doug’s service. It will mean the world to Julie.

Aw. How’s she doing?

Well, I–I saw her briefly yesterday, and she’s– she’s putting on a brave face, of course, as we knew she would, but–

Mm.

Well, come.

OK.

Sit. Now, am I right? Are you still living in LA?

Oh, yes, yes. You and John should come stay with us sometime. We have a lovely guest room.

Oh, that would be so nice.

Yeah.

Yeah, we’d like that. How is Noelle?

Fine, thank you. Good job, serious boyfriend. And also, I have two sons, all grown up.

No.

Yes.

Oh, my gosh. I’d love to meet them sometime.

Oh, we’ll have to do that. Yes, we’ll find a way to get the two families together. I–I hope.

You know what? We do have to do that.

OK. I’m sorry I–I… lost touch with you, Marlena.

Well, I am too.

 

[chuckles]

We had–we’d gotten very, very close, hadn’t we?

Yeah. Well, being kidnapped by Stefano DiMera is quite the bonding experience.

Yeah. And sadly for me, it was a recurring experience.

 

[laughs] You know, I missed you. I missed you, Marlena. And I also missed all the people here in Salem, except wretched Marie Horton, of course.

[chuckles]

Maggie, I was so sorry to hear about your husband’s passing.

Well, thank you, Marie. And–and the flowers you sent, they were lovely.

Well, that was the least I could do. You know, Salem has really lost a lot of extraordinary men of late– first Victor.

And now Doug. That wonderful man, he lifted everyone’s spirits just by being around him. Hmm. My heart goes out to Julie. I–I know all too well what she’s going through.

And you, you’ve mourned two husbands.

I was lucky to have two great loves and one of them being your wonderful brother.

Oh. You know, after all these years, I still can’t believe that Mickey’s gone and Tommy and Addie and Bill and my parents. There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think about each and every one of them.

Well, Alice and Tom, what a legacy they left.

 

[sighs]

Good to see you.

Good. Are you good?

Yeah.

It’s so wonderful to see the two of you.

Same here. Where’s your mom? When is she coming?

She isn’t. After you called with the news about Grandpa, she went to go visit my dad in the hospital, and… he squeezed her hand.

Oh, God, what?

Yeah.

Bo’s waking up?

We don’t know. We don’t know. The doctors think it may have been involuntary, but Mom is convinced that his condition is improving.

Yeah, she thinks it has something to do with her presence, you know, with the connection that they share.

Yeah.

Oh, my good– we have been praying for your dad to get better.

Yeah.

I mean, I completely understand why she would never leave Bo right now. I know Julie’ll understand too.

[chuckles]

Steven. Steven. Wow, not that I’m not thrilled and excited to see you, but why in the hell are you climbing through our bedroom window?

Don’t look so shocked, Jules. Surely you remember that this was my means of entry into Grandma and Grandpa’s house when we were kids.

 

[chuckles] Yes. To their horror too.

Yeah, I know. Grandma was convinced that I’d take a terrible fall and break every bone in my body.

And you did a couple of times, as I remember. Why are you standing there, just grinning at me like a–like a Cheshire cat? Why don’t you give me a hug? Oh.

Oh.

 

[sighs]

[somber music]

Baby Bo. He’s a little man.

I know.

Oh.

Oh, precious Addie. Look at her. How old is she now?

She just turned one.

Oh, my goodness, she is adorable.

Oh, thank you.

Oh, I love that you named her after your grandma.

I know.

What’s–what’s this?

Oh, that is the time capsule that Julie found behind the old mantel after the fire.

It’s still not open?

Still not open. Jack brought it to Boston to see if I could open it. I couldn’t budge it, so I brought it back to Salem for Thanksgiving to see if someone else would like to take a crack at it.

Do you mind if I give it a try?

[Shawn and Ciara chuckle]

Julie, when I heard about Doug, I knew I had to be here with you. I’m so sorry.

He spoke of you in conversation more than I did.

Oh, yeah. Wondering how his fellow con man was doing.

No. Of course, he always had your number.

He was an insightful man.

[chuckles] With a heart of gold.

Now, I will make sure that Harold Trask gets his cashier’s check back. It’s up to you to come up with a story that will convince him why you want to dissolve your Salem partnership.

 

[scoffs] It would be a lot easier to explain if I could give the check back to Trask myself.

Jack did such a wonderful job on Doug’s obituary. There was so much I didn’t know about him. Wait, his real name was Brent Douglas?

Yeah. Yeah, it was.

OK, well, why did he change it?

Apparently, he just wanted a fresh start after he got released from prison.

 

[sighs] Prison. I cannot imagine Doug in prison. But then again, I guess people would probably say the same thing about me.

[chuckles]

Yeah.

What was he in for?

Well, Doug was actually quite the grifter. I mean, he went to prison for securities fraud.

Seriously?

Yeah. And get this. His cellmate was Julie’s uncle Bill Horton.

Not bad.

[sighs] Never gets easier, does it, saying goodbye to those we love?

Well, I hope Johnny and Chanel know how grateful we are that they agreed to watch the kids today.

Oh, they were very happy to do it so that we all could be here to honor Doug. Oh, you know, that man, he touched so–so many lives, mostly in the little ways that nobody even ever hears about.

Yes, he did, with a word, smile, or song.

Yeah. I wonder who’s gonna come back for his memorial.

Well, Doug was loved by so many, I wouldn’t be surprised if a few blasts from the past came back to pay their respects.

Oh, Maggie, I have such fond memories of growing up here in Salem and only a few regrets.

Mm. Well, I have more than a few regrets.

[chuckles]

Oh! Well, mine all have to do with my unfortunate taste in men.

And what men are you referring to?

As if you couldn’t guess– Alex Marshall, Neil Curtis.

[holiday music] Although I must say I’m grateful to Alex. He gave me my beautiful daughter, my Jessica. But Neil, on the other hand– oh, Maggie, I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t be saying this, because I know you were once involved with him. And he is Sarah’s father. But the only thing I got from Neil was a bitter rivalry with Liz Chandler. She absolutely despised me for marrying him.

Ugh, how I despise that woman for marrying Neil, which turned out to be a dumpster fire, as you know.

Yeah. Liz, that was a very long time ago.

Yeah. You’re right. You’re right. Today is about Doug. He wasn’t only endlessly charming and kindhearted, but he–he was eager to champion people, like he did for me. He gave me my first big break, singing at his casino.

Well, you didn’t tell me what you’re doing here today. You doing some volunteer work?

No, but that’s a good idea, actually, now that I have all this free time on my hands.

You think you might be looking for a job?

Yeah. Got any ideas?

Yeah, yeah, you might consider coming to work as a singer for me at my club.

A job singing? Are you serious?

Yeah, that’s not anything I’m gonna kid about. I mean, you may not have any professional experience as a singer, but I mean, you got a wonderful voice.

Oh, Doug.

[chuckles] You better be careful. I might just take you up on that one.

Hmm. I owe so much to that man.

We all do.

So Julie was married to an ex-con who was also married to her mom? How did I not know this?

I didn’t say anything ’cause I didn’t know if Julie wanted me sharing personal information.

Right. Well, it’s obviously out there now.

Yeah, yeah, she must’ve been cool with it if Jack put it in Doug’s obituary. But anyway, her and the ex-con, they lived happily ever after.

They sure did. Wow, I–I thought my family history was wild.

[both laugh]

Apparently, Julie had some practice with some shady dudes. And her brother, Steven, well, he–he fled Salem. He was on the run from some mobsters and never looked back.

[tense music]

[chuckles] Your grandson is in the FBI?

Yes, he is. And I’m very proud of him. His name is Eli Grant. He is tall, handsome, and married to the most gorgeous, tall woman you have ever seen. And they have two beautiful babies.

Can’t wait to meet them.

Really? You sure?

Of course. Why wouldn’t I be?

Well, I seem to remember, in the past, you raised quite a bit of hell around here, darling.

[dramatic music] Remember? You dealt drugs. You stole jewels. I used to say to myself, that man has put every gray hair in my grandmother’s head.

You were a piece of work. Do you remember everything? Do you remember the time I came to you so excited, asking you to be my partner in my antique business? I was thrilled. I thought, this is gonna be a dream come true, ’cause I’m gonna be working with my baby brother. I did have a conversation with Doug about you and I going into partnership.

And what did he advise you to do?

Well, he didn’t advise me. He said that I should do as I saw fit.

I’d like to tell you I want Uncle Mickey to draw up all the documents so we’ll be legal as soon as possible.

[sighs] I don’t have anything to invest, Julie. I can’t let you just give me half of this business.

Honey, you don’t have to invest anything except your talent. Now, I’ve thought about it, and I feel if you put in a percentage of your share of the profits, you can pay me that way over a number of years, I don’t know, five or something. We’ll have Mickey work out the details. And then… it all fell apart. You sold fakes to my customers, a betrayal. And it broke my heart.

Doug is still a danger to himself and to others. Kayla knows that.

I’m not sure I agree with that anymore.

You’re not sure you agree? It’s clear that Julie has let her emotions take over her judgment.

Don’t talk to me about judgment, or I will show you what a danger to others really looks like.

Marlena felt terrible, what she put him through.

Yeah, they did. And Marlena, she was so brave and so strong too. And the two of them, Marlena and Doug, they had so much goodness in their heart.

So many people have arrived, though, coming to celebrate Doug, to honor him. In fact, Liz Chandler– Liz Chandler was here.

Yeah, yeah, she stopped by. We had a nice chat.

I love her music. I remember when Shawn and I first started dating, he made me this love song CD. And “Friends and Lovers” was on it, and I just loved it. I listened to it all the time.

Hmm. Come sit. Tell me, how is Shawn doing?

I–I don’t really know. I’ve just–I’ve been trying to give him some space, which is why I’ve been spending all this time in Hong Kong, doing consulting work for DiMera. You know, I– I don’t know, I still wanted to be here to–to show him some support while he–he says goodbye to his grandpa. But he doesn’t know that I’m here.

You haven’t spoken to him?

I mean, only briefly, by the phone. I mean, we just haven’t really seen much of each other lately, so I don’t really know where things stand.

Yes, I mean, we’re assuming that she is trusting us as a family to find a way to open it without damaging everything that’s on the inside.

That’s right, so now we got to be patient and wait another 60 years to find out.

Oh, it was a piece of cake, honestly.

I know Neil was a real sore spot between you and Liz.

Well, that’s putting it mildly. Oh, whenever I think of everything that went down, it just stirs up all that anger with Liz all over again, even after all these years, even at a time in my life when I should be letting go of old resentments, right?

Well, we should at least try.

Well, you’re right.

[chuckles] Oh, but I’d count myself lucky if I never laid eyes on Liz Chandler again.

Well, then I guess today’s not your lucky day, huh?

You’ve been transformed?

Completely transformed. You see, about six months ago, I visited an ashram.

An ashram, in India?

In India, where I met this guru, Rishi Sharma. Julie, he changed my life, helped me to see that it was due to my spiritual deficits that I’d been leading a hedonistic and somewhat amoral life. Honestly, my time with Rishi was a revelation, a renewal of my soul. So you don’t have to worry about the old Steven anymore. That–you’re looking at the new and improved version.

I’m glad to hear it.

 

[chuckles]

I have always believed that a person can change for the better at any stage of their life. Look at my darling Doug. The man we all adored and respected is not the man he started out to be.

Uh, no. Not at all. I’m glad for the break. Come on in. Have a seat.

How was your celebration at the pub?

You know, it was actually pretty great. Bonnie burnt the Kiriakis’ turkey. [laughter] So I invited their whole family to join our whole family. So it went from two separate celebrations to one big party, and it was great, really. Although, I have to say that one of the perks of being called in tonight was I got to skip doing the dishes.

Well, then you really lucked out.

[laughs] Yeah. Except for I had to leave before the dessert came out. Steve promised me a plate. But, uh, anyway, I’m surprised to see you here. I thought you and John had Thanksgiving plans.

Well, he ditched me. [laughs]

Hey. It’s a pretty nice Thanksgiving, I thought. Wasn’t it?

Yes, it was indeed.

Yes. And it was very nice of Kayla to let us crash her Thanksgiving lunch.

Yeah, she saved the day. [laughs] Especially after Bonnie lost the battle with the turkey.

Yes. Yeah, she really did. And, uh, I thought it was relatively lovely, despite some of the awkward moments.

Yes, there were definitely a few of those.

But I agree, it was mostly a lovely lunch.

[laughs] Mama. I saw you looking at Victor’s portrait when I came in. I know you miss him so much.

I do.

Especially around the holidays.

I do. I do. You know, it’s just this time of year. I mean, we just feel so much the ones that we love that we lost. It’s just, uh–we just feel it more than ever.

Well, Dad has to be the most patient man on Earth. [laughs] He’s reading “Green Eggs and Ham” to the twins for, like, the fifth time.

Ooh. Well, I hope he reads it to ’em a few more times since you and I are long overdue for some mother-daughter, one-on-one time. OK, now, dish.

I want to hear all the gossip about life in DC.

I mean, Mom, there’s– there’s not much to tell. Um, we’ve–we’ve really adjusted our lives there. You know, we’ve made some new friends. [laughs] It’s a great city. There’s so much to see and do.

Right.

[laughter]

And you and your husband have made it very clear you have no interest in moving back.

Only for now, Mom. Like I told you, Salem is our home, and we eventually want to move back here. We miss being so close to our loved ones.

And your loved ones miss having you close by even more. And I’m not just talking about Abe and me. I know Julie misses her grandson and those grandbabies just as much as we do.

We do a lot of video calls with Julie.

Well, I’m sure you do, but nothing’s as good as seeing you all in person.

I know. I know, Mom, which is why I’m really glad that Eli made it a priority to go visit Julie.

So JJ and Chad both had something come up?

Yeah. Yeah, something rather urgent.

Uh-huh. Well, that’s too bad. I know Grandma was definitely looking forward to having a full house.

Oh, yeah, I think she made enough food for a while.

[laughs] Yeah.

But maybe you can just stay and have a few bites before you have to go to Abe and Paulina’s.

Oh, something tells me that Grandma’s not going to be giving me a choice.

Yeah, and there might be a napkin with your name embroidered on it, so I think your instincts are right.

Oh, God. [chuckles]

You know, your grandma loves you so, so much, and she misses you and Lani and the twins.

Well, the feeling is mutual. And Doug and Julie, they’re not only my two favorite people, they’re family. I’m definitely looking forward to spending some quality time with them.

My grandmother’s candlesticks, just for the dining room table. Aren’t they lovely? Wh–where’s Doug? Did you wake him up?

Julie, I– no. I mean, I tried. Julie, I’m so sorry.

Julie. I’m certain. He must have passed away in his sleep. He– [sighs] Oh, what can I do? Can I do anything? What can I do?

And Jules, oh, my– [laughs] She’s take charge, OK? She is assertive. And when she wants something, she is not afraid to let you know.

Yes. [laughs] And Carver, I mean, he really looks up to her. He just hangs on her every word.

Oh, my goodness. So sweet.

I know, I know, I know. The kids said they need exactly three more minutes to finish their board game. Then they’ll be down for dinner. I hope you had better luck with Doug.

Jack, what’s wrong?

What do you mean, John ditched you?

Well, he got called away at the last minute by the ISA.

Well, that’s so strange. Steve didn’t mention anything about it.

Well, um, apparently it was pretty sudden. I don’t know all the circumstances, but apparently it was top secret, so there’s no reason that Steve would know about it.

Yeah, but I mean, John wouldn’t have to tell Steve about the case, but he still– I mean, they’re in business together. They tell each other when one is leaving town.

Yeah. I don’t know. He didn’t explain that to me, but I’m not even sure where he is or how long he’ll be gone.

You know, today is about giving thanks. And Victor would want me to focus on my blessings, which are abundant. I mean, God, I have a daughter who is walking again. And I have a granddaughter whose laugh warms my heart.

Victoria does have a pretty great laugh.

[laughs] Just like her mother!

[laughs]

Where is that little angel, by the way?

Last I checked, she was still fast asleep, right next to her daddy who was on the floor next to her crib, so I’m not really sure who put who to sleep.

[laughter]

Aw, that’s so precious. Listen, I don’t know if you’re interested, but Julie invited us over for dinner tonight.

Another meal? Oh, my God. I’m still full from the pub.

I know, I know. Well, I don’t know. Maybe we could drop by for dessert. It would be nice to see everyone.

Yeah.

Yeah, I have– I really do have a lot of great memories of spending Thanksgiving with Dad’s side of the family. And Grandpa Tom would make a very heartwarming speech. Grandma Alice would make her donuts–

–which was the best.

And if we were lucky, we could get– we could get Doug to sing a song or two.

A little while ago, Jack tried to wake up your dad to come down for dinner, but, um, he–he didn’t wake up. Hope, he died in his sleep.

Doug passed away.

Oh, that husband of yours is full of all kinds of green flags, isn’t he? Rushing over to see his grandma as soon as he arrives in town.

[laughs] Eli is a family man, for sure. You know, he may not have grown up with the Hortons, but they’ve become so close over the years.

I just think it’s so sweet the way he dotes on Julie.

She means a lot to him. They’ve all made such an effort to just welcome him into the family. But Julie and Doug? They went above and beyond.

Jennifer’s calling Hope. I just spoke with Kayla. She’s sending an ambulance over for Doug.

Oh! I–I–I want to see him.

My heart is breaking for Julie. She and Doug loved each other for over 50 years. That’s–this has to turn her world upside down.

Yeah. And Hope. It just breaks my heart to think about her getting that call.

Well, she loved her dad.

And he loved her so much. You know, when– I mean, really, moments after my pop died, Hope was there, comforting me. I just wish I could do that for her right now.

I should have made more time to come home.

Hope, your father understood. He–he knew you needed to be close to Bo.

I didn’t get to say goodbye. I didn’t tell him how much I love him, how much he meant to me.

Oh, he knew, Hope. You were his princess.

Darling, I don’t doubt the fact that you love Jack. Not at all. I’m just saying that when you have had a yen for a guy and it’s over, there still are times when you think about him.

[laughs] No. Aww. Well, you know, nothing like being stuck for hours in a metal tube with two toddlers. [laughter]

Yeah, it wasn’t fun.

Oh, well, I am gonna go check on the twins, see if Dad was able to get them to sleep.

[sighs] Well, I promoted Jada to commissioner, and he decided to move on. Anyway, I have been promising to beef up the ranks. But good detectives, they are hard to come by. And, you know, you– you and Lani, you’re the best. And I was hoping that you two could, you know, be a package deal.

[sighs] Paulina, I don’t know. I mean, Lani’s been having a good time at–at the house with Jules and Carver, especially because she missed so much time away from them.

Oh. [gasps] Xander. You startled me. Oh, my God! I heard the great news that Sarah’s up and walking! That’s so wonderful! [gasps] How’s she feeling this morning?

Oh, my God. Sarah. [gasps] This is a Thanksgiving miracle! [laughter]

I’m sorry you missed her. Sarah was just discharged and she’s probably home already. She wanted to surprise you.

Discharged already?

Yeah. Well, listen, we monitor very closely last night. Her vitals were stable. And we thought the best medicine for her would be to go home and have Thanksgiving with her family.

[soft dramatic music]

Oh, that’s wonderful. [sighs] Kayla, you’ve made my day, my month, my year. [Kayla chuckles] I mean, I’m so grateful to you for everything you’ve done for Sarah.

Listen, you have to know how happy I am that I got to see her walking again. I mean, really. I am so grateful that she allowed this to happen. I’m just so proud to be part of it.

That was so kind of you to say. [sighs] Well, now I’m going home. I’m going to watch my daughter standing and walking and– oh, what a perfect Thanksgiving. Thank you so much, Kayla.

I’m not interrupting anything, am I? I know Joy was with you yesterday.

Oh, yeah, yeah. She just happened to stop by while we were running lines and, you know, during the whole cupcakes taking the revenge on my insides situation. Anyway, she took off after I felt better.

Sounds like you’ve got a new friend.

Yeah, she definitely went above and beyond yesterday. But, um… you know, you don’t have to stick around here if you have your hands full. I know you got a couple PR nightmares, the poisoned cupcakes and leaked storylines and–

Yeah, it never ends. [Stephanie chuckles]

But at least I have the long weekend to craft a response strategy.

And it’s good I’ll have the extra time, actually, because I was crazy enough to take on a new client yesterday.

Mom, she knows about the letter. She’s the one who forged the damn thing. If she blabs about my involvement, I’ll get 25 to life right alongside her.

Philip, I really wish you hadn’t gotten involved with this wretched woman again.

Yeah, so do I. But too late now. The only option is to string her along while we fight this out in court.

Yeah, well, OK. That’s going to be a very uphill battle, though, since Xander actually has Victor’s legitimate will on his side.

Yeah, I know. That’s why I brought in reinforcements.

Reinforcements? What reinforcements?

[suspenseful music]

Philip. Now, why would he need a PR rep?

Well, as you know, he’s contesting Victor’s will.

I am aware, yes.

And he wants to get his side of the story out before the court of public opinion can tell it for him.

And what’s his side of the story?

He believes that Titan is his birthright. And that had circumstances been different, he would have been named Victor’s heir.

Yeah, Steph, I know that will backwards and forwards. Uncle Vic, he made his wishes crystal clear. He expressly left full control of Titan to Xander.

I’m aware of that. However, what the general public doesn’t know is that Philip is in possession of a letter from Victor that explicitly states that had Philip not been presumed dead at the time the will was probated, Victor would have left Titan to him.

Yeah, but he didn’t.

So you’re team Xander on this?

Uh, I’m team sanity, Steph. Xander is the heir, period. End of story. But obviously, you took the job, so I hope you’re at least being handsomely rewarded for being team Philip.

Well, I didn’t take the job for the money, Alex.

Oh, OK, well, then why did you take it?

Because I care about him. And I want to help him get what he feels he deserves. I mean, he’s not just some random client that I took on. Philip and I, we have a history.

[mysterious music]

So tell me something. Did you think you’d be spending your Thanksgiving elbow-deep in canned peas and frozen turkey? [Justin chuckles]

I’m happy to be home. Especially because… well, I’ve been thinking a lot about Adrienne this morning. About how she and Joe and Duke, if he was around, they’d be one of the families who would be eating one of these meals.

Yeah, they probably would have been. And like every holiday, I’m thinking a lot about my sister today, too.

[soft upbeat music] And all the loved ones we’ve lost lately.

Yeah. It’s definitely going to be a hard Thanksgiving for Chad… thinking he had Abigail back and then finding out it was all some cruel hoax.

Yeah. Speaking of that, what’s your take on the Cat Greene situation? Legally speaking, I mean. I mean, why would they drop all the charges against her like that?

I’ve been wondering the same thing.

What’s even more baffling, Chad is the one who convinced EJ to set that woman free.

[phone beeps] [Justin sighs] What’s up?

Well, we may have to set one of these bags aside for me. It looks like there was a snag at dinner and, uh, Bonnie has been promoted to head chef.

There you are. How wonderful is this Thanksgiving? [Maggie laughing] Sarah home and walking?

Oh, I know. It’s the best Thanksgiving ever. [Bonnie laughs] Why are you in an apron?

Oh, uh… Cook chowed down on my tainted cupcake that I stupidly left out. And now, he’s in bed with a bucket.

I must admit I have always wanted to make a turkey slathered in butter and deep fried in peanut oil. [Bonnie giggles]

Oh, you know what, Bonnie? You know you’re supposed to cook that outside. With–with careful supervision.

[sniffs] Oh, no. Do you smell something burning?

Well, as soon as our sweet little Victoria wakes up, I am going to follow her all around this house.

Well, she will love that.

Yeah. I’m going to love it more. You know… baby, I know that I would’ve had a really good life. I do, if this cure didn’t come around or if it didn’t work, because I’m really lucky. I have you and I have Victoria and my mom and all of our friends. Just blessings all around. But still, it was a pretty great unexpected gift. Wasn’t it?

[chuckling] Yeah. For me as well. And for all of us that love you.

And to think… Dr. Ralph is the one that made it happen.

Yeah, that mad scientist changed our lives forever, And for the better.

That he did. I really owe him. Words I never thought I would say. [Xander chuckles] And of course, Brady. We owe him a lot… since he convinced Kristen to hand over the serum.

Yeah, I mean, that wasn’t an easy feat.

Mm-mm.

But even if he hadn’t pulled it off and… even if Philip hadn’t showed up to cause trouble, I was more than ready to give up Titan to get my hands on that serum.

I know you were.

But now that you’re all better…

Mm-hmm.

There’s no way in hell I’m going to do that.

Do you think Philip will still go after Titan?

I have no doubt. Yeah, that spoiled little screwup will stop at nothing to take what’s rightfully mine. And mark my words, he will come to regret it.

Stroke of genius, actually. Because if I get the public on my side before we go to court, I’m much more likely to have a sympathetic judge and/or jury.

OK. I see the angle. Prodigal son returns versus interloper with a criminal record. I don’t know. At the very least, Andrew will probably have to make a deal.

Oh, I’m not interested in a deal, Mom. I’m the rightful heir to the Kiriakis fortune. Titan was always meant to be mine. And it will be.

I hope so. I do. But I do have a little concern with your grand plan.

Well, I don’t think Philip is out of his mind. I think he’s a decent guy. And I admit that I have regrets about the way that I handled things.

No, no, no. I–[sighs] I’ve learned my lesson. I was wrong about Brady and I apologized to him. And surprisingly, he and I are on pretty good terms now. And as for Philip, well, my battle with him will be fought in court. And only in court.

Good. With Justin’s help, I hope?

Definitely.

OK. I’m not saying it won’t get messy, but what family dispute doesn’t? But I will be cool, calm, and collected because now… my beautiful wife’s fate is no longer directly tied to my company’s, which can only help me in court.

But I don’t want you to worry about any of this. OK? All that matters is that you’re home and well on the road to recovery. All that other stuff…

Especially since I do believe that he’s entitled to dispute his father’s will.

This food, the warmth, our health, our good fortune. But most importantly, love. And though we are missing our loved ones that we’ve lost this year or the ones that are far away, they’re right here with us in our hearts. Or my if brother, Roman Brady, they’re upstairs. [chuckles] We’re all so glad that he’s on the mend.

Uh, yeah, I mean, physically, I’m doing much better, not so achy. But, mentally, Dad, I-I just– I don’t know if I can– I don’t know if I can do this. I’m going crazy.

So you’re still beating yourself up for cheating on your wife with that actress?

Yeah, with “that actress,” okay, who now has a huge presence in our lives, who works with Chanel and I every single day, who Chanel keeps inviting to dinner. I mean, my wife is… She’s the best person I know. She’s kind. She’s loyal. She’s generous. And not only have I cheated on her, but now I’m lying to her about it, pretending as if it never even happened. I can’t go on like this, Dad.

Alex, please. You have to promise me that you’re not going to tell anybody what I told you about me and Johnny. Promise me. [knocking on door]

I need to get that. Chanel, hi.

Hey, uh, Alex. I’m–I’m sorry to bother you. I-I heard you weren’t feeling well.

Leo… your life is over? I mean, w-we’ve talked about this black-and-white thinking, haven’t we?

I don’t know. But when I was a kid, my mother used to sit me down in front of these old black-and-white movies. And if I so much as yawned, she’d be like, “Oh, is this too boring for you, Siskel? Or should I call you Ebert?”

I’m not sure what to say to that. Look, let’s put the hyperbole aside. Why don’t you tell me what happened?

Well, I’m having a problem, a really big problem, one that has no solution. In fact, things are so bad, I’m looking at these one-bedroom flats in these dreary little English cities, someplace where nobody knows me, where I can start over.

Okay, Leo, Leo, just tell me what happened.

Okay. Well, my entire career and my burgeoning, oh, so promising love life have all gone up in smoke, just like that.

Oh. Well, I’m surprised to hear that. I didn’t know that you were having a relationship.

I’m not anymore. And it wasn’t really a relationship yet. See, it was very new, but it was amazing. And it was kind of perfect, and I ruined it.

How do you think you did that?

I don’t think I did. I know that I did. I met this guy, Javier Hernandez. He was witty. He was charming. He was incredibly good-looking. And now he never wants to talk to me again.

So Jada did a great job while yours truly was out of commission, and the mayor offered her the job.

And what? So they sent you to the mailroom? Did she fire you?

No. No. I was basically offered her old job, and I didn’t want it, so I resigned.

Wow. I can see it now. “Commissioner Hernandez, sworn protector of every man, hangs up his hat.”

Okay. You might want to tone that down a little bit, but, yeah. Anyway, I noticed you didn’t come home last night.

How’d you know I didn’t come home last night?

Because I didn’t see a long fur coat draped across the couch.

Okay, just so you know, it’s not real fur. I am an animal lover.

Noted. So… hot date, huh?

I did have one. It cooled off quickly… [sighs] When he revealed himself to be a giant idiot.

Son, haven’t we spoken about this? I thought we both agreed that no good can come from you telling Chanel about your one-time transgression.

“One-time transgression.” What, is that DA speak for cheating on your wife?

Johnny, you’re entitled to do whatever you feel is best, of course. But you and Chanel have something very, very special. And perhaps keeping quiet is–

But I-I did decide to keep quiet, remember? And then as you know, Chanel decided to invite Joy over to watch the premiere of “Body & Soul” with us.

Yes, I remember. I ushered her in. And I also remember seeing you nestled between the two of them on the couch. That must have been very awkward.

It was more than awkward. It was excruciating. Dad, I don’t know if I can keep this up.

So then what? You’re just going to tell Chanel the truth?

Hey, Chanel. Um, Alex and I were just running lines, until he started feeling sick, that is. I thought I’d keep an eye on him. What in God’s name was in those cupcakes?

Actually, that’s why I’m here. So it turns out that the Health Department was able to analyze those cupcakes, and– the ones that weren’t eaten, obviously– and it turns out that they didn’t come from Sweet Bits.

Ah, so you weren’t trying to poison your co-stars, huh?

[chuckles] You know, that would have been a good way to get some more screen time, but, nope. I didn’t even think of it.

Ah. Well, all joking aside… I am glad that nobody messed with your bakery.

Yeah, me too. I am completely relieved. But, anyway, um, Alex, it’s your turn. Uh, what did you want to tell me?

So who is this “idiot” that you speak of? Or did you get his name?

Oh, believe me, I got his name. Leo Stark.

Leo? Wow. Yeah, come to think of it… as I recall, you two were flirting the other night in the Small Bar, but I was under the impression that Gabi put the kibosh on it.

Oh, she sure tried to. She said to me, “Primo, siéntatewhile I tell you what a creep that Leo Stark is.” But did I listen? No. And… it just really hurts, you know?

Yeah. Yeah, obviously. All right, so I’m curious. What exactly did Leo do?

[dramatic music]

So you’ve accused Javier of being Lady Whistleblower?

Right. And I know what you’re thinking, Dr. Evans. How could that guy be Lady Whistleblower when I am Lady Whistleblower? But the thing is, I’m not anymore. I eschewed my nom de plume to become the head writer of “Body & Soul.”

Yes. Yes, that’s right. So it would seem that Javier is–

An impostor. Exactly. A sham Lady Whistleblower, who is not only pretending to be moi but spoiling upcoming storylines. In fact, she told everyone that Charlemagne’s not–

Not what?

Not important. What matters is that this cheap knockoff is spoiling my show in “The Spectator”– my former paper. Can you imagine how angry I am? My fists are, like, permanently clenched.

So you think the person pretending to be Lady Whistleblower is Javier?

Well, I thought so. But now I think I may have jumped to the wrong conclusion.

We haven’t been able to locate Hattie yet. But, Mayor, I can assure you that we are doing everything we can.

Have you tried looking under your desk?

Because unless she’s tunneled into the building, I’m assuming… Nope. She’s not in the office. So why are you?

You and every other officer should be out there beating the bushes. Now, need I remind you, Commissioner, that I put you in this job because I trusted you to get results? But, you know… I’m–I’m starting to wonder if I should regret that decision.

I know that I promised Joy I wouldn’t say anything to Chanel or anyone else for that matter. But, Dad, I mean, the guilt– it’s killing me, okay? And not to mention that I’m constantly in fear that Chanel’s going to figure it out somehow, that she’s going to realize what I did.

Well, you never did have much of a poker face.

Ah.

[pats leg] But, seriously, you think, what– Chanel is just going to look at you one day and go, “Ah, this man has trespassed against me, and I know exactly how he did it”?

Honestly, yeah. Yeah, I do think that could happen. Nobody knows me like Chanel. Even if she can’t read it on my face, what worries me even more is if she were to find out some other way. – So are you going to tell me? Or are you going to start a game of charades?

Uh, Chanel, I forgot to ask you. How’s, uh–how’s Johnny doing? Sorry. Sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt. It’s just this morning when we were watching the show, he had a cupcake, too, right?

Yeah. Yeah, he was actually feeling pretty sick himself. But he’s starting to feel much better now.

Oh, well, that’s a relief.

Yeah, it is. I mean, I thought he was kind of delirious for a second there because he was talking in his sleep, and he never does that.

Really? That’s strange.

Yeah. Yeah, and what was even more strange is he was talking about you.

Madam Mayor, I can assure you that although I am physically here in this office, I am doing everything I can to track down Hattie Adams.

Would you care to expand on that?

As I mentioned, I have officers working very closely with the Health Department to determine the origin of the tainted cupcakes. I am also following a few leads with my counterparts in other jurisdictions in regards to Hattie’s whereabouts in the days since she decamped from Salem. And, Mayor, I am sure you’re aware that your husband is not the only victim of a crime here in Salem. I have several families… who want justice for their loved ones. And as commissioner of this city’s police department, I have to direct my attention on those cases as well. But, of course, if you are not happy with my performance, then you are more than welcome to give the job back to Rafe.

[dramatic music]

This is amusing to you, is it?

[laughing] Oh, I’m sorry. I’m sorry, okay? It’s just… It’s not funny, all right? But Leo accusing you of taking his old job so you could destroy his new job–I mean… Look, I don’t use the word “narcissist” that much, but, I mean, wow, yikes.

Yeah, well, I’m glad it’s comic relief to you, but I became quite intimate with this jerk. And I even felt myself becoming– I don’t know–smitten a little. He had the nerve– the gall to question my integrity? [scoffs]

And then all of the dots started to connect. See, I walked in on Javi tapping away at my computer, which is a total invasion of privacy. And this was right after he said that “the fans would kill to know what’s on there.” And he also mentioned that he needs a second job to make ends meet. And before you say, why do you think Javi would stoop to that level? Dr. Evans, I invented that level.

So… case closed?

Well, you would think so. But then I stormed over to his office to accuse him of spoiling my show, and he denies everything. Worse than that, he starts poking holes in every single part of my story, talking about how improbable the whole thing was. And the more he said so, the more–

You began to believe him.

But it’s too late now. I mean, you can’t put the toothpaste back in the tube. And now Javi wants nothing to do with me. [sighs] Dr. Evans… why do I do this to myself? It’s like I have a PhD in self-sabotage.

How could I be so stupid?

I mean, who does he think he is? God’s gift to novelas? I mean, the very idea that I would even date him or whatever just to steal his stupid story so then I could, what, become Lady Whistleblower? [scoffs] I mean, as abuelaused to say, “Ese ahí mismo es un loco.” That man right there is a crazy person.

Mm. Mm-hmm. I mean, you know, Javi, if– if I didn’t know any better, I’d say you’re a little defensive.

Okay, so… you’re worried that even if you don’t tell Chanel about what happened, she’ll find out anyway.

Well, when she came to check on me earlier, she said I was talking in my sleep.

[sighs] Okay, um, and did she tell you what you said?

Yeah. Yeah, apparently I said something to the effect of, “No, Joy. We can’t do this.”

[clears throat]

Luckily, I was able to cover. I said that I was dreaming about directing Joy in a scene. But what about next time? All right, maybe instead of… worrying about what I’m going to blurt out in my sleep, I should just come clean while I’m awake.

So Johnny was talking in his sleep about me?

[laughs] Yeah. Yeah, he was. I guess apparently he was directing you in a scene. And then the two of you got into an argument about how you should play it. And so he was saying, “No, Joy. We shouldn’t do this.”

Huh. [chuckles] That’s crazy.

I know, right? But I guess that just goes to show how dedicated he is to his craft. I mean, even struck down with food poisoning, he’s still dreaming about work. And, you know, seeing him sick like that, it really just– it made me realize how much I love that guy and how just lucky I am to have him in my life. You know?

Mm-hmm.

But, anyway, I-I should get back to him. Oh, yeah, Alex, weren’t you going to tell me something?

It seems like you two are having some sort of telepathic conversation or something.

I don’t know if I’m going to be well enough to make it to work tomorrow. So I wouldn’t even bother learning your lines, to be honest.

Yeah, which we all clearly need right now, huh?

And this incident will be remembered by you merely as a-a speed bump on the long, beautiful road that is your marriage to Chanel.

Johnny, it will happen, but not if you give in to this irrational need to confess to Chanel that for one night, you were unfaithful, but only because you believed she was. Son… if you say something now, it could cost you dearly. So you need to seriously ask yourself this question. Is this a cliff? Or is this just a speed bump? Now, I know I can offer you advice, but I can’t force you to take it. This is your life. This is your decision. So, whatever it is… you need to make the best one that is right for you.
