Phyllis: Oh, good, good. Tell me what you think. Although you could show him a thing or two.

Nick: Well, flattery will get you everywhere.

Phyllis: I mean, I know ’cause I’m up close and personal with all of your muscles.

Nick: [ Chuckles ] Alright. Well, I’ll give you the full report when I’m done.

Phyllis: Okay. Hey! What brings you by?

Jack: I’m surprised you have to ask. I’m here to apologize.

Victor: Ashland. Sorry to keep you waiting.

Ashland: No problem. Thanks for inviting me. So, what is this about? Board business for newman media?

Victor: I thought you and i should get to know each other a little better, considering we’ll soon be in-laws. It’s not always about business, you know.

Ashland: You know, if i hadn’t heard you say those words myself, I would never believe it.

Victor: Well, maybe we’ll surprise each other today.

Billy: Well, I am glad I ran into you. I have a got a bone to pick.

Victoria: About what?

Billy: I ran into dr. Nate hastings, and he said he got a personal invitation from ashland to your big tuscany wedding. I checked the mail — nothing for me. So, what’s up with that? What did nate do to earn this special consideration?

Victoria: You know, you make me wonder why I put you on the guest list in the first place, since every time you see me, all you do is dig for dirt that you can publish about my fiancé.

Billy: You seem annoyed. Usually you like sparring. We can end this quickly and quite simply, really, by just telling me about ashland’s history. And I will be out of your hair. I promise.

Abby: I think this goes here.

Mariah: Hey, can I help you with that?

Abby: I think I got it. Thanks.

Mariah: Oh, you know what? I think I see what you —

Abby: I said I got it. Thank you. There we go. All set.

[ Sighs ] It’s such a nice day outside, I’m gonna take dominic for a walk through chancellor park.

Mariah: Yeah, that sounds lovely. Uh, have a great time.

Abby: We’ll see you later.

Mariah: Mm-hmm.

Abby: Let’s go, honey. It’s so pretty outside.

Tessa: Hey, mariah.

[ Door closes ] Mariah? Oh, honey. What happened?

Chelsea: [ Laughs ] That’s so funny. I can’t wait to talk to him about it. I’m — I’m just so happy that connor had such a great time at camp.

Adam: I think it’s time that we tell him the truth about where things stand with us.

Chelsea: Now? U-um…aren’t you rushing things?

Adam: He deserves to know what’s going on with his family, chelsea.

Chelsea: But so much is still up in the air.

Adam: With us? Chelsea, come on. We have talked about this already.

Chelsea: I guess I just thought, with time, things would get better.

Rey: Oh, there you are.

Sharon: Hey. Um, this is a surprise.

Rey: Well, I thought I’d stop by during my break and see you. But I was the one who got surprised when the barista said that you had to step out. Been running errands?

Sharon: Uh, yes. And no. It wasn’t exactly an errand. It was just something that i felt I needed to do. I went to see adam.

Adam: Look, chelsea, we have had a long and complicated relationship. But I think that we need to go our separate ways now, apart.

Chelsea: But what about connor? I mean, shouldn’t we at least try again, for his sake?

Adam: I know you, chelsea. I can hear it in your voice that you still think it’s possible. But, honestly, I’m surprised to hear that because it wasn’t that long ago that you wanted me out of your life so bad that you thought sending me to prison was the answer.

Rey: Adam. And you went to see him because…?

Sharon: Well, you know why. We talked about it. He wanted some advice on how to talk to connor about the changes that are happening in his family right now, and you’re the one who urged him to not put that off.

Rey: You’re right. I suggested it thinking, again, there were plenty of other people who could give him guidance besides you.

Sharon: Yes, but…

Rey: I know. I know. It’s just in your nature to — to want to help. And that’s one of the things i love most about you. But I have a question. And it’s the same question i have had from the beginning and still have to this day. Will adam ever be out of our lives? You know, I was hoping to spend a little time with you during my break, but now I have to head back to the station. Otherwise, I’ll be late. I hate leaving this like this.

Sharon: Well, why don’t you stay for a few minutes?

Rey: Why? I’ve said my piece. I don’t think it’s gonna change anything, but, uh… I had to say it. I’ll see you tonight.

Victoria: You know, there are times when you think you’re being so, so charming, and yet you are so far off the mark. It makes me wonder if you even know what the definition is. And take my word for it. It’s not your most endearing trait.

Billy: Well, I’m in the media business. I don’t need to be endearing. It’s not exactly in the job description. But let’s just squash that for now. You still haven’t told me why nate — or how nate — became ashland’s new bff.

Victoria: They’re not bffs. Ashland is giving money to the hospital. They happen to have a few things in common. They’ve hit it off. Oh, I’m sorry if that’s not scandalous and titillating enough for you to feed your readers. But that’s not gonna stop you from digging, is it?

Billy: I am curious about your relationship for a few very good reasons, and our readers are curious about ashland’s past. The question is, why are you not curious?

Victoria: Don’t you dare presume to know what I care about or what I don’T. But by all means, please feel free to assume that I’m really tired of this little fishing expedition of yours. Feeling stressed in your skin?

Phyllis: Oh, listen. You don’t — you don’t have to apologize to me.

Jack: Well, I said a lot of things last night, and I didn’t mean to make you feel uncomfortable.

Phyllis: Oh, you didn’t make me feel uncomfortable.

Jack: Well, you had every right to be. You’re with nick now, and i was —

Phyllis: Being candid. That’s all. Listen, yeah, I’m with nick. You didn’t make any declarations that you were coming after me. You were just telling me what was in your heart. Listen.

[ Sighs heavily ] We’ve known each other a really long time. You don’t have to apologize for simply telling me your truth.

Jack: Okay. Just to be clear, I was apologizing for possibly making you feel uncomfortable, not for the things I said last night. They were true then. They’re just as true now.

Phyllis: Well, I’m glad you got that off your chest.

Nick: Hey, guys.

Phyllis: Hey!

Jack: Hey.

Nick: Am I interrupting?

Phyllis: No. We’re just talking about stuff.

Nick: Well, I have some news that I think both of you are gonna like. I just got a text from summer. She said it is time to make some travel plans for her civil ceremony with kyle.

Jack: I am looking forward to it.

Phyllis: That is amazing. I’m so excited. I’m so excited. All of these weddings in italy. Kyle and summer and then ashland and victoria in tuscany.

Nick: Yeah. I like it. There’s a lot of love in the air.

Mariah: I’m fine.

Tessa: Really? Because you seem pretty upset.

Mariah: Abby and bowie — sorry, dominic — they were going out, and the stroller just — and I — I just wanted to help, and…

[ Sighing ] Mm. Okay. Abby was taking the baby to the park. And it was gonna be his first time seeing it, and I’m sure it was gonna be awesome. And — I don’t know — I just got so sad when I watched them walk out the door.

Tessa: Because?

Mariah: I don’t know.

[ Voice breaking ] I have no idea.

[ Sniffles ] It’s just a feeling that is so…hard to describe. And I — I worry, I guess. And I don’t know why.

Tessa: Well, I mean, after what stitch put you through, it’s only natural. It’s got you looking over your shoulder. You’ve got a lot to put behind you.

Mariah: Yeah. [ Sniffles ] I do. A lot.

[ Sighs heavily ] There’s just this thought that i cannot seem to shake, no matter what I do, and I feel so bad thinking about it while I’m living in abby’s house and… have you — no.

Tessa: What?

Mariah: Abby’s history is the reason why bowie and me were put in jeopardy, you know? Her relationship with stitch. All of it, it — it led to me carrying the baby when she needed a surrogate. And then stitch comes back into town, and he brings chaos and disaster. He still wants abby, and he’s willing to do crazy, terrible things to get her back.

Tessa: Stitch was troubled. But he made his choices. You’re not blaming abby, too, are you?

Mariah: [ Sniffles ] Rinsing the dishes before they go in the dishwasher?

Victor: How’s your treatment going?

Ashland: Thank you for asking. I have to admit, uh, there’s been some rough days, some, uh, difficulties to conquer, but i do believe the treatments are, um, helping me along. The days after the treatments, I’m feeling better, stronger.

Victor: Glad to hear that. Tell me about your early days in business.

Ashland: Well, the question is, where to start?

Victor: Well, how about the beginning? Now, I’ve always been interested in the early careers of successful businessmen, you know?

Billy: Maybe I am fishing a little bit. But it’s not like I’m casting my line blindly, not knowing what I’m about to get. As of right now, I am simply confirming things that I’ve already learned. And I’m trying to fill the holes.

Victoria: Such as?

Billy: Such as the fact that ashland doesn’t even seem like he existed before he met his mentor — camilla rhodes.

Victoria: That is patently ridiculous.

Billy: Mm. Is it really? I mean, we haven’t been able to find a birth certificate on the guy. He talks about in interviews how he lost his parents when he was a teen. We can’t find a death certificate for them, either, at least not under the names that he’s provided. So you tell me if that’s not weird.

Chelsea: Well, it seems like you’ve already made up your mind. I just thought, after everything we’ve been through together, something this important would warrant a longer discussion. I don’t know, adam. I thought maybe we would at least try, for connor’s sake. But, yeah, if this is where we stand, then, yeah, we need to talk to connor.

Adam: Good. I was hoping that you would agree.

Chelsea: But we have to do this the right way, adam. I mean, I’m here. You’re there. You have to at least wait until I come home. We can talk about it together.

Adam: Do you have any idea when you’re coming back?

Chelsea: I — I don’t know. Since we last spoke, anita has taken a turn for the worse. She fell again. She re-injured herself trying to do too much.

[ Sighs ] Coming up with a timeline right now is quite difficult.

Adam: But we have to try, right?

Chelsea: My mom doesn’t have anyone else that can take care of her. She won’t let me hire a nurse to pitch in, much less full time.

Adam: Chelsea, you’re just going to have to insist. It’s just that simple.

Chelsea: Well, adam, my mom is insisting that I take care of her, okay? And I can’t just walk away.

Adam: Even though you know it’s anita just being anita?

Chelsea: What are you saying? What, you think she faked her fall to keep me from leaving?

Adam: I’m saying that I don’t want to wait. It’s not fair to connor. I don’t want to dictate, but it seems like the only solution is for me to deal with this myself.

Chelsea: Okay, can you just hold on a second, please? Stop barreling through this.

[ Stammers ] Then bring him here. We can talk about it together. Please, adam, I have to be a part of the conversation.

Adam: I’m not saying no just yet, but there are problems with coming to minnesota, too. What if we tell him we’re goingthere and then he’s gonna get his hopes up for all of us to be together? He’s gonna be crushed when he realizes what the trip is all about.

Chelsea: You are coming up with any excuse to cut me out of this. You won’t come here, but you won’t wait. I’m stuck, and you are refusing to compromise.

Adam: I’m not trying to be cruel. I’m just trying to do what’s best for our son.

Chelsea: No, you’re just thinking about what’s easiest for you.

Adam: No, I’m no– like many people with moderate to severe ulcerative colitis

Sharon: Sally! What can I get for you?

Sally: You know, I’m getting kind of bored ordering the same old thing. I feel like something different, surprising, a real pick-me-up. Do you have any suggestions? What is your personal favorite?

Sharon: Oh, I’ve got a lot of faves.

Sally: Well, pick one for me. I love the vibe here. But I must say I was a little surprised when I heard that you were running this place ’cause the first time I heard your name was back when I was an avid reader of restless style. Do you miss working in fashion?

Sharon: Not at all. I, uh, have a degree now, in psychology, actually, a master’s degree. And along with owning and running this place, my life is quite full. I’m very content.

Sally: Well, it seems like you have it all then — great career and a handsome husband.

Sharon: I guess I do. Enjoy your latte.

Sally: Thanks. Mm! Adam. You have to get sharon to make you one these iced lattes. They are delicious.

Adam: Huh. Nobody beats crimson lights. Uh, I think chloe was looking for you at the office.

Sally: Oh. Better get back then. Do you want me to wait for you?

Adam: Oh, no, I’m not, um — I’m not gonna be headed back right away.

Sally: Oh. Too bad. My loss.

Sharon: So…how’s she working out at newman media?

Adam: [ Clears throat ] She’s very enthusiastic.

Sharon: She definitely comes off that way, but she also comes off like, uh…a handful.

Victor: I take it you are familiar with my early days?

Ashland: If you’re asking me whether or not I’ve read your biography, the answer is yes.

Victor: Ah.

Ashland: You grew up without parents in an orphanage, a father who deserted his family and a mother who promised she’d come back for you but never could. You left the orphanage as a teen and changed your name and took charge of your life, laying the groundwork for the empire that you would build. Quite a story.

Victor: Boy, you read it, didn’t you? That’s very nice. Thank you. Did any of it resonate with you?

Ashland: Sure. But of course there are differences. However, like you, I, uh, had to jump-start my life as a teen.

Victor: Uh-huh. So, what was your relationship with your parents like?

Ashland: I was as close to them as any kid could be at that age. They were well-meaning people, but a book about my life would not be as gripping as the biography of the great victor newman.

Victor: [ Chuckles ]

Ashland: The interesting part of my story begins with the accomplishments that made me the man I am today. But that was then, and this is now. Maybe I’m saying this in light of my diagnosis or how victoria has been so key in teaching me how to live in the moment. But I feel the need not to look back, to never look back.

Victor: Hmm. And you don’t think that those early experiences made us who we are today?

Victoria: Billy, this is just such an alarming story. I mean, it’s far too big for chanccomm alone. I’m gonna have to alert the major newspapers and the big networks. I’m gonna have to call the cable-news media. Ashland locke does not have a birth certificate, and you cannot find his parents’ death certificates. Oh, I know. Maybe he’s an alien from mars. I cannot believe that you think any of this is significant.

Billy: I cannot believe that you don’T.

Victoria: We’re talking about documents from years ago. Everything was on paper. I mean, maybe it’s buried in a warehouse somewhere, or maybe it’s simply missing.

Billy: Yeah, maybe, maybe, maybe, maybe. That’s what lily said.

Victoria: Well, you know what? I knew she was smart. So I wonder — what is she doing with you?

Billy: That’s funny.

Victoria: Seriously, though, billy, if these hard-to-find records are the best that you have, then you’ve wasted enough of my time, not to mention your own time.

Billy: Look, victoria, I am not looking for reasons to doubt your fiancé. They just keep falling in my lap.

Victoria: Yeah, because you’re seeing what you want to see. If you would just stop this ridiculous search for something bad, then we would all be a lot better off.

Billy: That’s not what I’m doing.

Victoria: And I’m warning you. You better not be saying anything negative about ashland to our children.

Billy: Do you honestly think that I would do that?

Victoria: I don’t know what you’re capable of, billy, not when it comes to ashland. You’re so obsessed, I have to wonder. But if you keep this up, then i will let you know what I’m capable of.

Nick: It’s nice.

Phyllis: Yeah. I mean, or this one right here. I mean, it’s a far cry from the veil that she has, but, I mean, this is sort of how I envision her looking for her big day.

Nick: Yeah. It’s pretty.

Phyllis: You could pretend to be interested.

Nick: What? I-it’s, uh, you know…

Phyllis: Nice and pretty. Right.

Nick: Yeah. Look, whatever you pick is gonna be amazing.

Phyllis: What about my dress? I’ll give you a fashion show later, and you can decide.

Nick: Sounds fun.

Phyllis: “Fun”? Really? That’s all you got for me?

Jack: Imagine my luck, running into both of you.

Abby: Ah, dominic, look! It’s uncle jack.

Jack: Hey, dom! How you doing, buddy? So small. So perfect. It’s a miracle. There’s no other word for it. It’s a miracle. A baby is the greatest gift anyone can get. Chance enjoying the pictures of his son?

Abby: Pictures? Um… well, honestly, he doesn’t even know he’s been born yet.

Jack: Wait, there’s no reaching him at all? Oh, abby, I’m so sorry. Wow. That’s got to be tough.

Abby: It is, yeah, but, you know, in the meantime, um, i have a great support system at the house. And, well, dominic — he fills that void.

Jack: Okay, I don’t know how I would get word to him, but, you know, I have some connections if you’d like me to try.

Abby: Oh, uncle jack, that is very sweet, but we’ve been going through christine and her contacts, and, honestly, if they can’t find him, I don’t think anyone can. And I don’t really want to put chance’s safety at risk.

Jack: Yeah, I get that. I know what it’s like to be far away from someone you love. It’s only got to be harder when you have no idea where they are and you can’t communicate with them.

Abby: Yeah. It just breaks my heart that chance doesn’t even know he’s a father. This waiting — it’s killing me.

Jack: Well, at least you have this bundle of joy to hold tight while you wait.

Abby: Yeah. Yeah, and I know that chance — he’s gonna be home soon. He’ll do whatever it takes to get back to us. And dominic is not gonna miss out on one bit of love. Everyone in the house is gonna make sure of that.

Mariah: I just hate having these thoughts. I feel so awful and so ashamed. I mean, do I blame abby? No, of course not. But — no. Mariah, shut up. Just stop talking.

Tessa: Mariah, you don’t have to hold back with me. I’m here to listen. You can anything you feel. Sometimes you have to say things out loud just to understand them. You’re scared.

Mariah: I am. I’m terrified.

Tessa: Of stitch?

Mariah: [ Sniffles ] I mean, everybody keeps reassuring me that he’s gone and he’s not coming back, that they’ve beefed up security around here and that he wouldn’t risk it, but what if he does? What if he comes back anyway?

Tessa: Well, he is a wanted fugitive, and the police are looking for him. None of us will be fooled again. Besides, chance will be back eventually, and stitch will realize that he has no shot with abby.

Mariah: I know, but that could take weeks, even months. I mean, who knows how long. I want to be brave. I promise. I really, really do. But I am just so afraid.

[ Voice breaking ] I feel like i used up all of my bravery in that room. And I have so many thoughts in my head that are fighting for attention, and it is drowning out all of the good things around me.

Tessa: I just wish you could see yourself from my perspective. You’re so full of these emotions and nerves. It’s overwhelming. It takes you to these bad places that you just can’t seem to get beyond.

Mariah: I don’t know what to do.

Tessa: I think you need some time and some space to work through everything. Hey…why don’t we go somewhere and do something? It could be a really good distraction. What do you say?

Mariah: No. Uh…no, I’m — I’m sorry. I’m just — I’m not — I’m not really feeling up to it. Uh, I actually think I’m gonna take some time alone.

[ Door opens ]

[ Door closes ]

Phyllis: Okay. Um, something’s going on. And it’s not just, you know, my offer of a lingerie fashion show. Something is distracting you.

Nick: No. In fact, I think you should expand your show to everything that you plan on wearing in italy, including all that sexy lingerie you like to wear.

Phyllis: Alright, you have something on your mind, and it’s not just lingerie.

Nick: I’m just — you know, I’m very happy with what I’m feeling these days, you know? It’s comfortable, and I’m very content. We’ve got all this flirtation and fun going on.

Phyllis: Yeah. I mean, fun is sort of our thing, right?

Nick: Yeah. But it’s not all we have, right?

Phyllis: I mean, I don’t think it is all we have. I mean, I think we have a really good balance of love and fun. And we’ve been through a lot. I think that we’ve paid our dues. So this is easy, right? I mean, we don’t — we don’t have to work so hard anymore, right?

Nick: Yeah. Um… I’m glad to know that we’re on the same page about where things stand with us this time around, you know? I guess we’re lucky like that.

Phyllis: Hey. Hey. I do feel lucky. And I feel grateful.

Chloe: I’m gonna run the numbers by adam, get him to sign off. It’s always a good idea to loop in the boss, be sure he knows that we’re being careful with his money.

Sally: I just left him at crimson lights with sharon.

Chloe: Did you, now?

Sally: You know, I’m still a little bit in the dark about some of genoa city’s past history. What is the deal between the two of them? Did I hear that they were involved once?

Chloe: Ugh. Unbelievable. You actually have a thing for this guy, don’t you?

Sally: Wh– no. I-I was just curious, is all.

Chloe: Yet here you are, doing recon about whether he still has a thing for sharon.

Sally: I’m telling you I was just curious. I thought I picked up a vibe between them.

Chloe: Well, you definitely did. They have a complicated and profound relationship. The thing that blew up chelsea’s relationship with adam was — you guessed it — sharon. Their vibe or connection or whatever you want to call it pushed my friend right to her limits and right over the edge. Adam can’t seem to get sharon out of his system. And he probably never will.

Sharon: What’s that smirk about?

Adam: I’m just amused by your take on sally. She certainly doesn’t inspire neutral opinions and definitely gives people something to react to.

Sharon: Yeah, well, what I’m reacting to is her obvious crush on you.

Adam: [ Scoffs ] Sharon. You are letting your imagination run away with you.

Sharon: No, I don’t think so, adam. See, I’m very good at picking up on things like this.

Adam: Well, it wouldn’t even make a difference either way because right now I am focused on my son and my business. So, thank you again for the advice with connor, but after the conversation that I just had with chelsea, the last thing i need is to get involved with another complicated woman.

Sharon: Maybe it’s the complications that make it interesting.

Adam: Hardly.

[ Sighs ] No, the truth is, it’s me, actually. I am the problem. I failed with you. I failed with chelsea. How am I supposed to put somebody else through that inevitable train wreck? It’s not fair to anyone. I have enough on my plate. I’m fine being alone…for now.

Sharon: You know what, adam? Sometimes that’s the best approach.

Tessa: Hi. I heard you guys had an outing to the park. Was it a nice day?

Abby: It’s so beautiful outside, and you should have seen little dominic. I know he’s probably still too young to understand everything, but he just seems so curious about his new environment.

Tessa: Well, um, mariah and i had a talk while you were gone, and it was pretty difficult. Uh, I think seeing you leave with dominic triggered some things.

Abby: Really? She seemed fine when we left.

Tessa: Yeah, but she’s not. She’s scared. She’s worried. It’s the kidnapping, obviously, but she’s missing dominic, too. She’s struggling, abby. I know you’ve seen it, too. And it’s not getting better. It’s getting worse.

Abby: I know that she’s strong, but I don’t know how anyone can hold up after everything she’s been through.

Tessa: I’m just happy that it didn’t break her completely.

Abby: Look, I love mariah so much, and I am forever grateful for everything that she’s done for us. There’s got to be something we can do to help her through this.

[ Keys clatter ]

Victoria: [ Sighs ]

[ Exhales heavily ]

[ Sighs ]

[ Keys clatter ]

[ Exhales sharply ] Hi. I’m sorry. I didn’t hear you come in.

Ashland: You are okay?

Victoria: [ Sighs ] I am now. I, um — I just had an encounter with billy that kind of left a bitter taste.

Ashland: Why do I get the sense it’s about me?

Victoria: Oh, come on. I mean, you know billy. It’s just more of the same. He’s always trying to make trouble where there isn’t any, and now he’s convinced that you’re hiding something from your past.

Ashland: Ah. Well, what did billy uncover to make him think something like that?

Victoria: It’s actually what he didn’t uncover that has him all concerned. He’s just making a big deal out of the fact that he can’t find any evidence of your birth, no hospital record, no certificate, nothing, and — and he can’t find anything about your parents’ death, either. And, um — ugh, it’s ridiculous. And I told him so.

[ Cellphone pings ] Did you hear me? Don’t you have anything to say about billy’s latest inanity?

Ashland: Uh, I-in fact, I do.

[ Sighs ] Billy isn’t wrong. There’s something you need to know.

Adam: Hey, stephanie, can you send me the ad rate projections for the first quarter, please?

Sharon: [ High-pitched voice ] Sure, mr. Newman!

[ Laughs ] I’m sorry. Do you have a minute?

Adam: Uh, sure. But you are the last person that I expected to see here.

Sharon: Um, I just felt like I, uh, had to come by and apologize.

Adam: No, no, you don’T.

Sharon: Well, I mean, you — you came to crimson lights asking for advice about connor, and I just feel like I handled that badly and I’m sorry.

Adam: Sharon, after everything that we’ve been through, you never have to apologize to me.

Sharon: Thank you.

Adam: As a matter of fact, I am the one that is sorry. I told you that I was gonna give you and rey some space, and then I turned around and I broke my word.

Sharon: Mariah was pretty upset when she saw you.

Adam: She’s never had much use for me…because she’s rightfully protective of you. And everything she’s been through, she’s combustible. She lashed out. And, honestly, uh, I probably had it coming.

Victoria: It’s pretty clear, but I do have a breakfast meeting with mom.

Ashland: Newman enterprises official business?

Victoria: Yep, and some wedding details. How about your schedule?

Ashland: I have to review some newman media paperwork. And then I have a very important call with harrison.

Victoria: Oh, that’s gonna be so nice. Just remember — it’s okay to rest.

Ashland: I feel great.

Victoria: Well, I know that, but the chemo is still taking a toll on you, even though you won’t admit it. Have you been taking those supplements that nate gave you?

Ashland: Yes. I think that’s one of the reasons why I feel so good. Oh, and I must have that chemo brain people talk about. Uh, I forgot to tell you something last night. I hope you don’t mind, but i took it upon myself to make a decision on our behalf.

Elena: Thank you.

Nate: Mm-hmm.

Elena: That should definitely hit the spot.

Nate: It has been a minute since I slept in that late.

Elena: Well, we deserved it. And we needed it after all that strenuous activity last night.

So it seems kind of weird. You know, wouldn’t you want an actual friend to be your best man, not someone you just met? I mean, I’m honored, but… why me?

Billy: No, nothing new, no new information on locke during that chapter of his life, which, to me, is incredibly suspicious. But I did learn something even more disturbing than that.

Sharon: Well, I don’t know if that’s true.

Sharon: And I think that you need to have those answers before you talk to connor because he’s gonna have all these same questions and he’s especially gonna want to know if there’s any hope that his family might be together again one day. And you need to be prepared for that. So…is it really truly over between you and chelsea?

Elena: I understand why you’re thrown, but I actually don’t think that ashland’s request is all that strange.

Nate: Really? What’s your take on it?

Elena: Well, I mean, he just went through a divorce and he moved. He might not be comfortable asking his close friends who knew his ex-wife, you know? It’s awkward.

Nate: Yeah, that does make some sense. And he did mention that most of his friends were business associates.

Elena: Yeah, and he may not want to ask any of them to be a part of his wedding with victoria. Maybe he wants to choose someone who has a connection to her and her family. Maybe it’s like a symbolic gesture of new beginnings.

Nate: New beginning for a man who may not have a lot of time left.

Elena: Well, he certainly likes you. And he’s very appreciative of how you went above and beyond to help him the other day. I mean, he’s not even your patient, and you showed him compassion and you treated him like a human being and not like some big-shot billionaire.

Nate: And dealing with cancer helps people cut through the noise. I think ashland’s that type.

Elena: Right. So, now that we’ve talked it through, what do you say? Are you gonna be his best man?

Victoria: I love that you invited nate and elena to the wedding. I mean, nate’s — he’s an old friend. And elena — the more I get to know her, the more I like her. I didn’t realize we had so much in common.

Ashland: I’m so glad to hear you say that because there’s more. I even surprised myself with this one, and it came up spontaneously, but I asked nate to be in the wedding party… as my best man.

Victoria: Oh.

Ashland: I wanted somebody that mattered to both of us going forward and not someone from my past.

Victoria: Well, I guess nate qualifies.

Ashland: Indeed he does. I was thinking of asking victor, but, uh, he’s walking you down the aisle, I’m assuming. Jack abbott — well, that’s a complicated dynamic. And of course there’s always billy.

Ashland: [ Chuckles ] I’m kidding.

Victoria: Oh, good. I thought you were serious.

Ashland: Well, nate hasn’t given me an answer yet because i kind of caught him off guard. I’m glad he’s taking his time thinking about it, probably more than I did. But it struck me last night that, uh, it’s good to have someone like him by my side, you know? Maybe that sounds crazy, but…

Victoria: No, not at all. I understand exactly why you did what you did.

Billy: I asked our team to dive deeper into ashland’s past. I want to know everything, starting from the beginning. And they haven’t been able to find anything, so you know what that means.

Lily: That we need better investigative reporters?

Billy: No. It means his history’s been scrubbed.

Lily: So, what, you think that ashland’s hiding something?

Billy: “Think”? I know he is. How do you not know any information on the guy?

Lily: Like what?

Billy: Well, like where he was born, for instance, or the truth of what happened to his parents.

Lily: I thought they died when he was young.

Billy: Exactly. Every article on him talks about his parents, mary and ian locke, died when he was a teenager, but there’s no death certificates to prove that.

Lily: Okay, well, there could be a reasonable explanation for that.

Billy: Okay, what if I told you we can’t find a birth certificate for locke, either? It’s as if he and his family never existed.

Adam: Whenever chelsea and i once had is now over. I’ve been very clear with her about that.

Sharon: And you guys have talked that out, you’re on the same page, or you don’t know?

Adam: We’ve had conversations, but I don’t recall that I’ve gotten a definitive answer from her. And, um…

Sharon: And what?

Adam: There have been times when I get the feeling that she’s let go of a lot of her anger towards me and that she would be willing to give things another chance.

Sharon: Well, that does make sense, given your history. You two have overcome some huge obstacles together, and you managed to forgive each other.

Adam: But it’s different now. At least, it is for me. Too much damage has been done. But the thing that has not changed is our commitment to connor. We both want to do what’s right by him.

Sharon: Well, then I think you need to talk to connor sooner rather than later. You need to sit down with him, you and chelsea, and have a family conversation. You need to let him know that his parents are separating.

Adam: I get where you’re coming from, but I don’t think chelsea and I are gonna be able to do that anytime soon.

Sharon: Why not?

Adam: Because I don’t know when she’s going to return from anita’S. I mean, what if she’s gone for months?

Sharon: The longer you put this off, the more questions he’s gonna have.

Adam: You’re right. But it’s just — it seems too important to do this on a video call.

Sharon: No, this absolutely needs to be done in person.

Adam: And I think it’s clear that I need to do this now. And I need to do it on my own.

Nate: I like ashland, you know? He’s smart, witty. And there’s no pretense with him.

Elena: You can respect that.

Nate: It’s a big deal to be asked to play the role like best man in someone’s big day. I’m not quite ready to say yes.

Elena: Hmm. So, if you say “no,” does that mean we’re not going to tuscany for the wedding?

Nate: Oh, we’re definitely going to that wedding.

[ Chuckles ] I can’t pass up a reason to go to italy. You know, last time I was there, they ran out of pasta.

Elena: What?

Nate: It’s true! I ate all the pasta in the whole country.

Elena: I see. So we have to go back to see if they made more.

Nate: Hmm! But, you know, victoria and ashland, you know, seem to be very much in love. I’m happy to support them and celebrate them. Plus, I get a chance to spend some time with you in the most romantic place on earth.

Elena: I feel the same way.

Billy: You have to admit is is suspicious that there’s no record of locke’s birth or his family.

Lily: Yeah, sure, I’ll admit it. It’s intriguing.

Billy: “Intriguing”? Come on. It’s more than that. Look, think about victor, for instance. Not that I want to mention his name, but he is a business icon, much like locke.

Lily: Yeah, sure, they have similar backgrounds.

Billy: They do, don’t they? And that’s my point. Victor has been talking about his story for decades, about how he was an orphan that rose to the top. Those are the details that people want to hear. That’s what builds the legend. So why would locke not talk about that part of his life?

Lily: Maybe he’s a private person. Maybe he’s not close with his parents. Or maybe the death of his parents is painful for him.

Billy: Okay, then how do you explain the no death or birth certificate?

Lily: Because documents weren’t digitized back then. It’s very easy they could have been lost. It doesn’t prove a cover-up.

Billy: It’s more than that, lily. I mean, there’s no information about his school days, no family anecdotes, nothing.

Lily: Well, given how many lives he’s wrecked, do you find it that surprising that nobody wants to talk about him on the record?

Billy: Why are you fighting me on this? Do you really want me to give this investigation up that badly?

Lily: No. I just want you to have facts before you jump to conclusions ’cause it’s very possible this road could lead to nowhere.

Billy: Yeah. Well, maybe you’re right. You very well could be right.

Victoria: Asking nate to be your best man actually makes a lot of sense. We’re both people who are focused on work and family. It doesn’t leave time for much else.

Ashland: Yeah, like long-lasting friendships.

Victoria: Exactly.

Ashland: I moved my entire life here to genoa city, yet i don’t miss anyone that I used to socialize with back in new york. All of my so-called relationships were developed around networking purposes.

Victoria: I can understand that.

Ashland: Well, tara introduced me to some of her friends.

[ Clears throat ] We didn’t have much in common. She loved summering in the hamptons and going to all the galas, but I’ve always enjoyed being somewhat of a loner. And that was true before locke communications group. Once I developed a reputation — well, you know what it’s like to be in a powerful position.

Victoria: I do. I mean, most new acquaintances either defer to you or they ask you for something.

Ashland: And nate did neither one of those things. You know, when I was at my most vulnerable, struggling after chemo, he came to my aid. And he reminded me that I still had some power over the disease, how I treat it, how I include loved ones. Those were my choices.

Victoria: Agreed.

Ashland: Those ideas had a very strong impression on me. And it speaks to nate’s integrity. And he tells a damn good story.

Ashland: So I’d like to call nate my friend and have him stand with me when we get married.

Lily: What do you mean?

Elena: Oh, uh, we just had dinner with victoria and ashland last night.

Billy: Really? How’d that come about?

Nate: Well, ashland wants to help out with the new surgical wing at memorial.

Elena: And that’s how it started, but it ended up being a really good night. We talked about the wedding. It’s gonna be amazing.

Billy: Is that right? I’m sure it’s gonna be a big to-do. Any details you want to share?

Ashland: I have been waiting for this. What a perfect time for it to arrive.

Victoria: What is it?

Ashland: Well, consider it a combination congratulatory merger gift and an early wedding present.

Victoria: That is so sweet of you, but you shouldn’t have gotten me anything.

Ashland: Oh, you need this.

Victoria: Okay, well, now I’m very curious.

Ashland: Well, see for yourself. I know that your father’s portrait hovered over the ceo’s office for many years.

Victoria: Yes, it’s — it’s in the boardroom now.

Ashland: I thought it was time that it was replaced. This painting should take its rightful spot in your office to exemplify the changing of the guard.

Victoria: I love it. It’s just beautiful. I — I don’t know what to say.

Ashland: Indeed it is.

Victoria: How did you get her to do it?

Ashland: It wasn’t easy to convince her, but you deserve it. There is nothing I won’t do to prove my love for you.

Victoria: You already have, again and again.

Sharon: If you feel compelled to talk to connor on your own, then I think you need to speak with chelsea first. I mean, you don’t want her to be caught off guard after the fact. And that way she’ll be in the right headspace for when she talks to connor.

Adam: Agreed. It’s just… it’s going to be a difficult conversation. I’m a little wary.

Sharon: You can’t avoid it.

Adam: If she’s holding on to any hope that we can reconcile, if I take away that possibility, who knows how she’s gonna react, sharon?

Sharon: It’s gonna be painful. So just speak to her with respect and a lot of empathy for what she’s going through. You know, that’ll go a long way towards easing the pain.

Adam: I’ll try my best.

Sharon: Maybe it’s a good thing that she’s staying with her mother right now. That way, she’ll have some help if this does hit her hard.

Adam: I don’t know if anita is the best influence on her.

Sharon: Do you think anita would promise chelsea to heal her wounds by, like, running a con?

Adam: Something like that. I don’t know. Maybe I’m worried over nothing. Maybe I’m wrong about the vibe I’ve been getting from chelsea. But it is possible that she still despises me and she’s just being civil for connor’s sake. And in that case, if I do tell her that I intend to tell him on my own, it could provoke a huge negative response, maybe even set back her treatment.

Sharon: Well, maybe you should contact her therapist and let them know what’s going on. And then that way they can be prepared in case she needs that extra support.

Adam: I think she would think that’s a violation of her privacy.

Sharon: True. Well, I guess you’ll have to play that by ear. But it’s really crucial that you handle this right. You know, you’re setting up the foundation for how the two of you are gonna move forward as parents, and that’s what’s most important for connor.

Adam: You’re 100% right, sharon. I’m gonna do everything that you suggested.

Sharon: I’m glad that I came to talk to you about this.

Victoria: He’s good.

Nikki: Well, I’m happy to hear that. I was worried when you didn’t make it to the launch party.

Victoria: Oh, yes, well, that was a tough day. But he’s doing much better now. He seems to be handling the treatment very well.

Victoria: I’m fine. I’m choosing to believe that the chemo is doing what it’s supposed to do and fighting the cancer in his body so that we can have more time together. In the meantime, we’re just making every minute count.

Nikki: I’m sure that you are.

Nate: I don’t think it’s appropriate for us to share what victoria and ashland told us about their wedding.

Elena: Yeah, especially with victoria’s ex, who has a vested interest in publishing stories about her fiancé.

Lily: Maybe because nate’s a really great guy? Maybe because ashland’s getting treatment at the hospital that nate works at? I mean, it’s not like he has to be on a budget and not invite too many people.

Billy: No, that’s true. He can afford whoever he wants to be there. But it’s still a destination wedding. You’re still flying halfway around the world to get there. You’re still taking time out of your busy schedule to hang out with him and the newmans.

Lily: Yeah, it’s a dream vacation. It’s not an obligation.

Billy: Yeah, and I’m sure that’s exactly how ashland sold it to him, which is also weird. He’s built his career off being intimidating and aloof. Now all of a sudden he’s mr. Charming to people he barely knows?

Lily: Okay, they are doctors. They’re not moguls. He doesn’t have to worry about them screwing him over on a business deal. And, besides, everyone has said that ashland has changed since his diagnosis.

Billy: That’s what he wants everyone to believe.

Lily: Okay, why can’t you take anything that ashland does at face value? Like, what if he wants to expand his social circle?

Billy: Men like ashland don’t do that. They don’t seek friendships unless there’s something that they’re looking to get out of it.

Victoria: It was just so beautiful and so thoughtful.

Nikki: I didn’t realize that artist was still painting portraits.

Victoria: Well, neither did I, but ashland found a way to make it work.

Nikki: What a wonderful gift.

Victoria: I know. It just demonstrates how — how well he knows me in such a short amount of time. He recognizes how much being ceo of newman enterprises means to me. You know, mom, I’ve been wanting to replace dad’s picture for some time, but I want you to know it’s not a slight against him, of course.

Victoria: I just would like to step out of his shadow and shine on my own.

Victoria: The connection that ashland and I have — it’s like he sees me for who I am. I am painfully aware of everything hanging in the balance, and I try not to think about how quickly time is slipping away. Adam: Uh, sharon and I are discussing something important, as well. So, can you come back later?

Sally: No worries. It was a private matter anyway.

Sally: I-I’m really sorry. And I mean that this time. I — I came to the door, and i stopped when I saw the two of you. I didn’t really hear anything, but it was foolish and immature of me, and I’m sorry, adam. The truth is…[Sighs] I know that we’re trying to keep things professional between us, but… I got jealous.

Adam: Of sharon?

Sally: Well, you two have a history. But I know that that is none of my business, and whenever the green-eyed monster takes over, I make bad decisions. But I promise I will do better about trying to squash the beast if he ever makes another appearance. Your past, present, and future relationships with sharon are none of my business.

Adam: That’s right.

Sally: So, we’re good then?

Adam: We’re good. Now, did you actually have news about the budget, or was that just a cover story?

Sally: I will e-mail you because I’ve already taken up enough of your time. Get to work.

Nikki: This has been my concern the whole time. The whole family is worried. I mean, not that you and ashland won’t be happy together, but that, depending on how his illness progresses, it could cut your time together short. And then your heart will be broken. You’ve been so strong through all of this, and I really admire that. But it’s okay to have some fears. And, really, it’s not too late to admit that this engagement has been very abrupt.

Victoria: Are you saying that I should back out of the wedding now?

Lily: I don’t think it’s a red flag that nate and ashland are friends.

Billy: Well, we’ll find out soon enough who’s right or wrong. But I just got more information from our investigative journalist.

Lily: Did they find something out?

Billy: Nope, nothing. Another dead end, which, to me, is very suspicious. It’s almost as if ashland didn’t exist until he met the woman that later became his mentor.

Lily: And once again, there could be a reason for that.

Billy: I really don’t see how it’s possible for anyone in this day and age to basically have no record of the first 20 years of their life, unless they are deliberately hiding it. Or maybe he’s destroyed those records.

Lily: Right, another hypothesis with nothing to back it up.

Billy: Yeah. Believe me. It’s frustrating as hell.

Lily: You’re not the only one here who is frustrated. You need to look at why this matters so much to you.Who cares if ashland is hiding where he came from?

Billy: Who cares? If that’s true, the man is a lie. Everything he’s done in his life is a lie, his whole entire empire. That is a big story, a story that people want to hear. Most importantly, victoria deserves to know that. I don’t need any more motivation than that.

Phyllis: Where’s your she-devil tonight?

Adam: Why? So you can douse her with a champagne bucket again?

Phyllis: She brought me down to her level, which is even low for you.

Adam: Mm. Well, we, um, mud-dwellers have to stick together, you know?

Phyllis: [ Sighs ] Look at you. I knew this new, improved version of adam newman wouldn’t last long. Do you know that sally would be out of town if you didn’t allow chloe to hire her?

Adam: I’m letting chloe give sally a second chance. I figured you would be in favor of those since you’ve had quite a few yourself.

Phyllis: You more than I.

Adam: It’s not a contest.

Phyllis: No, it’s not a contest! Why are you keeping her here? Honestly, sally ran my daughter out of town, and you’re getting some sort of pleasure by keeping her around.

Adam: Summer is doing quite well in milan, from what I hear.

Phyllis: That’s not the point.

Adam: Listen. I just want to have a drink without the drama.

Phyllis: [ Sighs ]

Adam: Or unless you want to tell me what your real issue is with sally. Then I’m all ears.

Phyllis: You already know my issue with sally.

Adam: I think I was right the first time that we discussed her — that you see a little bit of yourself in her.

Phyllis: I’m not even gonna dignify that with a response.

Adam: You have a tell, phyllis. Every time that you swan out of a room without getting the last word, I know that I hit a nerve. Mm.

Nick: Hey.

Sharon: Hey! Nice to see yoU. You want your usual?

Nick: Yes, please. Thank you.

Sharon: Alright. How are things?

Nick: Everything’s going good. I was just looking at some pictures earlier that summer sent me from milan of her and harrison.

Sharon: Ooh, let me see.

Nick: Alright. There you go.

Sharon: [ Gasps ] Aww, summer looks so happy.

Nick: I know, right? Uh, I also have some of dominic right here.

Sharon: Oh, I met him in person when abby brought him home from the hospital. He’s adorable.

Nick: He’s sure is. I’m just so glad that he is healthy, considering how he came into this world. How’s mariah doing?

Sharon: You know, honestly, i think this ordeal has affected her in more ways than she even realizes, but she’s got a strong, loving support system.

Nick: Well, I hope I’m included in that group.

Sharon: Of course. You’re family. Look, I know you’ve had a lot keeping you busy lately. I read an article about the newman media launch party, and, uh, new hope was featured quite prominently there.

Nick: That partnership is, uh — is looking good right now.

Sharon: I still can’t get over it, you working with adam.

Nick: Well, we have both been on our best behavior to this point.

Sharon: You giving him a chance to prove that he’s changed — that’s — it’s incredible. It’s a testament to the kind of man you are.

Nick: Thanks for saying that.

Sharon: Hey, how was the party?

Nick: The party. Uh, the party was great until, uh, you know, sally decided to mix it up with phyllis.

Sharon: No, she didn’T. Oh, my gosh. What happened?

Nick: Uh, well, you remember when you, uh, dumped that entire pitcher of milk on my mom’s head?

Sharon: Yeah.

Nick: Something like that, but just, you know, substitute the milk for a champagne ice bucket, and in the middle of a big, giant party.

Sharon: At phyllis’s hotel? Oh, my gosh.

Nick: Yeah. Phyllis just keeps finding ways to surprise me.

Jack: What brings you by at this hour?

Phyllis: Well, I was driving by. I saw the light on.

Jack: Really?

Phyllis: [ Chuckles ] I-I saw the text that you sent to kyle in our family group text chain, so I knew you were here alone, in this big, empty house. I thought you might be lonely. I came to say hi.

Victor: Please come in.

Sally: Thank you. You have a lovely home. I will admit that your text caught me by surprise, but who could turn down a request from the great victor newman?

Victor: Thank you for being so prompt.

Sally: So, why don’t you tell me what this is all about? Though I do have some idea.

Sally: So, I am guessing you called me here to talk about the launch party, the scene I made with phyllis. I’m not proud of that. But luckily I didn’t read anything about it in the press, so it seems like it didn’t have any effect on the positive reception that newman media received. And adam wasn’t angry about it. I mean, I personally think it livened things up a little bit.

[ Chuckles ]

Victor: You know, so far, my sole focus has been on the launch party for newman media. But now that that is behind us, I’d like to get to know you a little.

Sally: Okay.

Victor: Would you like a drink?

Sally: Sure. I had an amazing single-malt scotch with adam the other evening.

Victor: Uh-huh. Well, I think I know which one you mean. So, did adam introduce you to this?

Sally: I was already aware of it, vaguely. It’s not really something my budget has allowed me to indulge in.

Victor: Well, now, I would not underestimate your success. I mean, first you were an assistant to lauren fenmore, and then you became the head of jcv. Right? That’s the job that my granddaughter held before you.

Sally: [ Sighs ] So, that is what this is about. Summer.

Sharon: I don’t suppose i have to guess who started this phyllis/sally showdown.

Nick: I actually wasn’t there when it happened. And I know I’m not getting the full story from jack. He’s being very protective of phyllis, trying to downplay her role in the incident. Anyway, jack got phyllis out of there pretty quickly, and then adam took sally away, so…

Sharon: Adam? Oh, right. Sally works at newman media now.

Nick: Yeah, I’m pretty sure sally was there as his date.

Sharon: Adam and sally. Interesting. Well, don’t look at me like you expect me to have some deep feelings about it. I mean, I said “interesting.” That’s it. Don’t read more into it.

Nick: There was a time when i didn’t think you were gonna be able to, uh, you know, detach yourself from the mess that is adam’s life. But I thought that if anybody could do it, it would be rey. He could help you, you know? And you guys seem pretty happy right now.

Sharon: We are. Thank you.

Nick: But I also know when it comes to your history with adam, it’s never quite that simple.

Jack: Thank you for dropping by to check in on me.

Phyllis: Of course. I owe you. You stopped me from making a real mess of the evening. Actually, a bigger mess of the evening.

[ Chuckles ] And then you gave me your pocket square so I could clean off the champagne on my face.

Jack: It was my pleasure. And for the record, all in all, you showed admirable restraint.

Phyllis: [ Laughing ] Oh, really? That’s generous.

Jack: I’m always a softie where you’re concerned, always have been.

Phyllis: So…that text that you sent kyle. Did I sense a certain melancholy and wistfulness?

Jack: I found a toy that harrison left behind. And it prompted a text, and maybe I got a little too nostalgic.

Phyllis: [ Sighs ] Are you okay?

Jack: Yeah. I’m — I’m — I’m fine. I’m tired. I’m winding down with a glass of wine before I go to bed.

Phyllis: Alright. I’ll let you go to sleep.

Jack: No, no, no. No. I’d love for you to stay. Actually, I could — I could use a friend right now.

Phyllis: So, do you want mindless chatter or deep insight?

Jack: [ Chuckles ] You are never mindless. You are sharp. You are funny. You are outrageous sometimes, just for the sake of being outrageous, but never mindless.

Phyllis: Deep insight it is, then.

[ Chuckles ] Why don’t you tell me what’s really going on?

Jack: I don’t want to get all maudlin. I — I have had countless conversations with people about kyle and summer’s decision to move to milan with harrison, and I just had it again earlier this evening with lauren. In all those conversations, i keep saying the same thing — “I’m fine. Change is good. Life goes on.” But it’s all happened so fast, it’s been a little jarring.

Phyllis: Yeah, I do understand how you feel.

Jack: And now I keep having this constant argument with myself. A part of me says, insists i need to move on, get on my with my life. And I get angry that I can’T. And another side of me says, “why should I? We’re talking about my son. We’re talking about my grandson.” This house used to be filled with noise and love and… and now it’s not. And I don’t want to get used to the silence. I don’t want to get used to the emptiness of it all.

Phyllis: You’re right. This house was up to its ears in abbotts.

Jack: Yeah, but traci now comes and goes to new york, and ashley the same thing and paris. But now kyle and harrison are gone.

Phyllis: So, what I’m hearing from you is that you’re lonely.

Jack: You have no idea.

Sharon: Look, I have told adam that the past is the past and I don’t want to go back there. You know, I’m not secretly drawn to him. I’m committed to my marriage. Don’t look at me like that. I mean, I’m telling you the truth.

Nick: I believe you, okay? I — [ Sighs ] I know how important it is to set boundaries, but I know how tempting it must be to allow adam’s toxicity back into your life, you know? But adam has shown a different side of himself. He saved faith’s life. He gave her a kidney. He came back to — to get me when I was trapped in that building in kansas. I mean, so I allowed him to come back into my life. What I’m saying is, I understand how it’s not so simple for you and, uh, you know, also that he’s a source of tension in your marriage.

Sharon: Okay. I wouldn’t be able to admit this to anyone but you. And given that you have come around about adam, I know you understand.

Nick: I mean, I have cut adam a break, but we are far from best friends. But I know how hard it is to want to see the good in him while also drawing a line.

Sharon: Yeah. That’s my dilemma. Um…you know, I think that people, everyone, needs someone in their life who really supports them. And I’ve made myself that for adam. And I’ve paid the price, but he’s also proven me right. So I just… it’s really difficult for me to try to turn my back on him completely.

Nick: And rey understands that?

Sharon: Yeah, rey and I, we’ve — you know, we’ve worked things out, and we’ve re-committed to our marriage.

Nick: That’s not what i asked. Does rey understand that you can’t completely cut adam out of your life?

Sally: Your wife already communicated in no uncertain terms how she views my involvement with summer, and i assume that you feel the same way, so I’m just gonna save you a little bit of time. Message received.

Victor: You caused summer quite a bit of distress. And that upsets me, you know? Now, had I intervened earlier, things would have turned out differently.

Sally: That sounds like a threat.

Victor: It’s not a threat. You know, you and adam caused quite a stir at the party, yeah? I mean, you prompted phyllis to empty a bucket of ice water over your head.

Sally: [ Chuckles ]

Victor: You know, adam is involved in a rather delicate situation with his son, connor. Connor’s very aware of the tension between his mother and his father. It’s not good for him. He’s upset by that. And what you may consider just harmless flirtation and socializing could have unwanted consequences. You understand what I’m saying?

Sally: Yes. Chloe actually brought this up to me earlier. I don’t know the details, but of course I am sensitive to the situation. I’m sure adam loves his son.

Victor: Yes, very much.

Sally: And he wants to protect him and do what’s best for him.

Victor: Of course.

Sally: So then shouldn’t adam be the once to decide what that is? I mean, should you really be dictating your adult son’s personal life — or mine, for that matter?

Victor: Let me put this in terms that you can grasp. Do not use my son adam as a way to salvage your…lackluster career. And arguing with me would be the worst mistake yet.

Adam: I guess I missed the memo about this meeting. Front loader odor.

Victor: I invited ms. Spectra over because she needs to know certain things now that she is a member of newman media.

Adam: What kind of things?

Sally: About your son and what is going on between you and his mother.

Adam: Hmm. And why would you talk to her about connor?

Victor: Because I think she needs to know the whole situation.

Sally: Apparently, he doesn’t trust you to communicate this information yourself.

Victor: Now that you have all the information, I hope you make good use of it.

Sally: Am I being dismissed now that you’ve put me in my place?

Adam: Sally, you — you should go.

Sally: Thank you for the scotch.

Victor: You’re quite welcome.

[ Glass thuds ]

Adam: Why? Why did you feel compelled to dump all of this on her?

Victor: Son, I’ve been around, okay? I know that type. She’s a climber, social climber.

Adam: [ Sighs ]

Victor: She’s trying to cozy up to you at the risk of pissing me off. And she hopes to come out on top. The question is, what is your motivation? You have talked for months about turning over a new leaf, to become a good father to connor. So, what the hell happened?

Sharon: My relationship with adam has changed significantly.

Nick: But adam is still a part of your life. Looks like he always will be. And rey knows that?

Sharon: Rey and I are as open and honest with each other as possible. And we get through the day like any other couple does. You understand. Things can’t be all smooth sailing with phyllis.

Nick: Actually, it kind of is right now.

Sharon: What’s different?

Nick: I don’t know. I stopped putting the brakes on her meddling. I stopped giving her ultimatums. I know phyllis means well, so I’m just trying to roll with it.

Sharon: You make that sound so easy.

Nick: I mean, it’s easier ’cause I made a choice to accept her for who she is. Oh, I know you have something to say about that.

Sharon: I just think — and all couples are different, but when a couple breaks up and then they get back together, things can be different for them. They can be better. I mean, as long as both of them agree on what they want. And it sounds like, uh, you and phyllis have that. It sounds like things are really good.

Nick: I know you a little too well. There’s something else on your mind. What is it you’re not saying?

Jack: Listen to me closely.

Phyllis: Thank you.

Jack: I don’t need you to fix this or tell me to look on the bright side. God, if anybody tells me that, I don’t know what I’M…

Phyllis: Are you kidding me? I’m not gonna tell you that. I’m not gonna be the one to tell you to look on the bright side. Okay? I just want to talk to you and — and listen to you.

Jack: Being lonely is embarrassing.

Phyllis: No, it’s not.

Jack: It is.

Phyllis: It’s human.

Jack: I’m telling you, it feels like I’ve failed at life. I don’t know where it went wrong exactly, but after a big, full life, I find myself completely alone.

Phyllis: Are you kidding me? You’re not alone. You have so many people who love you, myself included. That doesn’t preclude you from feeling lonely. I understand that. I mean, my goodness, you can feel so alone in a family. You can feel alone in a relationship. That’s just life. You know? We’re born alone. We die alone.

Jack: [ Laughs ] Is this supposed to be a pep talk?

[ Both laugh ]

Phyllis: It’s a reality check. I mean, I think that’s why we try so hard to create relationships — you know what I mean? — And connections with people.

[ Sighs ] That’s why we work so hard at romance.

Jack: Why we start a romance with the wrong person, hoping they’ll magically turn into the right person?

Phyllis: Exactly. Are you talking about sally? She’s definitely the wrong person, but sally is so thoroughly sally, I don’t know who you were hoping she would turn out to be.

Jack: You want an honest answer? I guess I was hoping she’d turn into you.

Matt: Sure thing. What’s the special occasion?

Sally: I am moving up in the world.

Matt: Oh, yeah?

Sally: Yes. It appears as though I’ve officially become the target of the newmans. Nikki newman ripped into me at the launch party for the company that I am now working for, and victor newman just summoned me to his home. Yeah, he did that thing that rich and powerful men do when they want something from you, only it’s supposed to feel like your idea. In this case, he wants me to stop seeing his son. Not that we’re seeing each other in that kind of way.

Matt: His father apparently thinks otherwise.

Sally: [ Sighs ] I am not sure what to think anymore. To my boss’s father. The jerk.

Adam: You are overreacting to the situation with sally. I assume that you resent her because of, uh, everything that went down with summer.

Victor: Son, this isn’t about summer. This is about a grasping social climber who was kicked out of L.A., Fired by lauren, and is now latching on to you to use you.

Adam: She’s not using me. I’d never that happen.

Victor: The situation between you and chelsea is not the best. Connor is in an emotionally fragile state. He doesn’t know whether he’s coming or going between the two of you. I mean, he’s confused now. He feels the tension between father and mother.

Adam: I’m in tune with what is going on with him. And it has nothing to do with sally.

Victor: I’ve been impressed with your demeanor both professionally and privately. But you’re slipping now. You’re going back to your old ways. You’re gallivanting with that dame around town, rubbing it in people’s faces, trying to elicit some kind of reaction, not thinking about the consequences.

Adam: I — connor is first and foremost in my mind. I will protect my child always. Okay? I don’t need you to go behind my back and micromanage my life. That is you slipping into old behaviors. It’s you trying to control me in the same way that has driven us apart in the past.

Victor: [ Sighs ]

Nick: Come on. Tell me what you’re really thinking. We’re being honest here, right?

Sharon: It’s nothing all that deep. I mean, you said it yourself. You chose the kind of relationship you wanted to have with phyllis, what you wanted it to be like this time and what you didn’t want it to be like. Less of the crazy intensity you had last time and — well, at least the kind that would make you put your fist through a wall.

Nick: Yeah. Wound up hurting a lot of people I care about, particularly you.

Sharon: I didn’t bring it up to talk about us. We don’t have to revisit that.

Nick: Alright, maybe it’s just, you know — I don’t know — phyllis and I are older and wiser now. Maybe we’ve found a way to be in a relationship in a more serene way ’cause, you know, we get each other and it doesn’t have to be complicated.

Sharon: I agree. It doesn’t have to be complicated. But I understand why you would choose something easy and comfortable.

Nick: Whoa. Okay, so, you’re saying I’m looking for the path of least resistance. It’s not real love and commitment.

Sharon: No. I didn’t mean that.

Nick: But something’s missing. That I’m settling?

Phyllis: Well, sally could never be me.

Jack: [ Laughs ]

Phyllis: Not on her best day could she be me.

[ Chuckles ] You don’t want another me.

Jack: Oh, don’t be so sure of that.

Phyllis: Oh, I’m sure of it. There’s a reason our marriage didn’t work out.

Jack: Yeah, we went through a lot, more than our share of heartache, but also some great times. Some of the best times in my life. And you are still the most captivating, fascinating woman I have never known…and sometimes so gorgeous, it hurts.

Phyllis: Jack —

Jack: No, let me finish. You are also complicated and frustrating and hot-headed and careless and…

Phyllis: [ Chuckles ] Yeah.

Jack: But all in all, a pretty spectacular package.

Phyllis: Ah. Well, you have had too much to drink.

Jack: You know, I keep thinking maybe — maybe the fact that we’ve spent so much time together lately, I… maybe the reason I didn’t move on with my romantic life was… ’cause I already was with the most amazing woman I’ve ever known. Maybe you set the bar too high, red.

Phyllis: [ Laughs ] Listen, I don’t — I don’t think you should say things that you might not mean.

Jack: I’m not saying this because I’ve had too much to drink. I’m saying it because it’s true. I have never stopped loving you. And I don’t think I ever will. Come on. You can’t be that shocked.

Phyllis: I don’t know what to say.

Jack: Let me be clear about this. I’m not acting on any of these feelings. I know our time is over. I know you’ve moved on. Life has moved on. I know you’re happy with…

Phyllis: With nick. That’s a fact.

Jack: Well, here’s another fact. I still love you… truly, deeply. And I have to live with that. I can’t stop it. It won’t go away.

Sharon: I didn’t mean to imply that you were settling with phyllis.

Nick: You sure about that?

Sharon: Yeah. I was just making an observation.

Nick: Ah, but you said “comfortable” and “easy.” I mean, don’t take this the wrong way, but could I say the same thing about you and your relationship with rey?

Sharon: Rey and I — you know, we get each other, like you and phyllis do. And, you know, it’s good to share trust and friendship in any relationship. In my opinion, it’s very important. And I’m glad that you and phyllis have gotten to that point and that you’re happy — ’cause that’s all that matters, that you’re happy.

Nick: Well, I’m happy that you’re happy.

Sharon: I got to go. It’s getting late. Hey, um… you want to help me close up?

Nick: [ Chuckles ] Wow. Um…

Sharon: [ Laughs ]

Nick: You know what? Sure. I’ve done it a hundred times. I know the drill.

Phyllis: Okay, here’s some water. I want you to hydrate or else —

[ Glass thuds ]

[ Door closes ]

Sally: Well, adam, your loss. Could have been fun.

[ Glass thuds ]

[ Sighs ]

Adam: My father made his point. Now I want to make mine.

[ Door bangs ]

[ Both breathing heavily ]

[ Door slams ] Sally… sally…

Adam: Sally? Sally? Sally! Hey.

Sally: [ Clears throat ]

Adam: Are you so mad that you’re pretending not to hear me?

Sally: No, I —

[ Clears throat ] Just distracted. So, why are you here? Still fresh

Adam: [ Sighs ] I’m really sorry about my father, the way that he called you over to the house and the things that he said.

Sally: Yeah. I admit, it felt a little bit like being called to the principal’s office.

Adam: [ Sighs ] He was totally out of line.

Sally: I’m really glad that you feel that way.

Adam: [ Sighs ] But when we were alone, he got me to really look at the situation, and I have re-evaluated.

Sally: Re-evaluated what, exactly?

Adam: I don’t think that we should see each other outside of the office anymore.

Sally: “Should.”

[ Scoffs ] That’s a word that I have eliminated from my vocabulary. You either choose to do something or you don’T. There is no “should” or “shouldn’T.” No acting a certain way because that’s what’s expected of you.

Jack: [ Sighs ]

Sally: You decide what you want, no matter how people are going to react. No matter how far outside it is from what’s considered “socially acceptable.” And if people don’t like it? That’s their problem. To hell with ’em.

Lily: Oh, my gosh! Look at that face!

Devon: I know. He’s a handsome guy.

Lily: So cute. And I love his name — dominic, with a “d,” in your honor.

Devon: Right?

Lily: Yeah.

Devon: That was unexpected. I didn’t — it was very special.

Lily: My gosh. And what a crazy story. It’s like, you guys just found mariah, and then the baby’s coming.

Devon: Oh, you have no idea. I have no idea what we would have done if I didn’t get nate on the phone to coach abby and me through everything.

Lily: Well, I’m sure the three of you would have figured it out.

Devon: Well, I’m glad i didn’t have to.

[ Chuckles ]

Lily: So, what was it like bringing a new life into this world?

Devon: It was incredible. And, uh, abby was amazing through it all. She stayed calm and reassuring.

Lily: Yeah. What about mariah?

Devon: I mean, what can you say about her? She was…heroic. She stayed strong through everything that she went through, from being kidnapped to trapped in a room for a weeks.

Lily: I am so happy that you and abby made it there in time for the delivery ’cause she must have been terrified.

Devon: Oh, yeah. It was just — it’s — it was all a blur, you know? But I will definitely never forget the feeling of just holding dominic in my arms for the first moments of his life.

Lily: Man, what a thrill to experience that.

Devon: I know. Yeah. I knew that I would feel a connection with him because of our dna, but this is just — this is something else.

Abby: Well, can’t we just get someone to fill in, like a bartender or something? No, no, no, we cannot go without a hostess. Okay, yeah, just — just figure it out and call me back.

Mariah: Problem?

Abby: [ Sighs ] We are short-staffed at society. One of our hostesses called in sick.

Mariah: Oh, bummer.

Abby: Yeah. You know, if tessa didn’t have a gig tonight, I would ask her to pick up a shift [Chuckles] For old time’s sake.

Mariah: Well, if you need someone to watch the baby, I can do it.

Abby: No, no, that’s okay. I-I don’t want to impose.

Mariah: It’s — really, it’s not a big deal, you know? He’s crashed out, so I’d probably just be sitting here doing what I was gonna do anyway, reading a book, maybe watching a little tv.

Abby: [ Sighs ] That’s very sweet. I just — it feels like too much.

Mariah: Abby, you’re not asking me to do anything. I volunteered. And I know you won’t make a habit of it, so… really. I’m happy to do it.

[ Indistinct conversations ]

Nate: Sounds like you thought of everything.

Elena: Yeah, it’s like the ultimate destination wedding. An italian palazzo? How dreamy is that?

Nate: I imagine it must be a challenge trying to organize an event this elaborate from another continent?

Victoria: Well, yes. Thankfully, my mother’s found someone there to coordinate it.

Elena: So, tell me about the dress.

Victoria: Well, um, I haven’t nailed down a designer yet, but I’m waiting to talk to summer’s boss — angelina marchetti. I’m not holding my breath. I know she’s really in demand. She might not have time to do it, so I might have to move on as the date approaches.

Elena: Ugh, that is such a hard decision. Honestly, the dress is the most important part.

[ Laughter ] You laugh, but it’s true. Have you decided on a style yet?

Victoria: Oh, nothing over the top, but at the same time, the aesthetic of the ceremony is certainly not minimalistic.

Elena: I totally get it. This wedding is gonna infuse so much joie de vivre. You need a dress that goes in line with that.

Ashland: Yes! Joie de vivre. That is exactly the spirit of this event — the joy of life.

Adam: Well, well. Good evening, everyone.

Nate: Adam.

Elena: Hi.

Victoria: I see you’re with sally. Maybe you’ve finally found your perfect match.

Adam: It certainly seems you two have. I couldn’t be happier for you both.

Adam: You too. Sally. I’m late. I know. I’m sorry. I, um — I got held up at the office.

Lily: So, tell me about the trip that amanda’s taken.

Devon: Oh, yeah. She and naya and imani decided they need a getaway.

Lily: What? That’s a big step for them.

Devon: It’s a huge step. I think it’ll be a good way for them to heal some wounds. You know, this whole saga with sutton and his involvement in richard’s death has — it’s really taken a toll on them.

Lily: Well, I mean, those are big things to get over, but I’m glad that they’re trying to, especially as a family.

Devon: Yeah, and it meant a whole lot to amanda because they suggested it.

Lily: Yeah, I’m sure.

Devon: So, where’s billy tonight?

Lily: Um, he is at home with the kids.

Devon: Nice.

Lily: I wanted to, uh, give them some alone time. I know how much they love having their dad all to themselves. So, I get to have time with you, hang out, catch up.

Devon: Isn’t it crazy how we have so much family stuff going on in our lives right now?

Lily: Oh, my gosh, I know, right?

Devon: It’s wild. You’re taking care of billy’s kids. We’re both looking after moses.

Lily: Mm-hmm. It takes a village, you know, which we’re all a part of. And now dominic and his parents are, too.

Devon: Yeah. And chance and I are technically family.

Lily: Yeah, through the katherine connection. Going strong.

Devon: And that’s the main reason, too, why I wanted to be the donor, is so that dominic could have that connection.

Lily: Well, now you and chance can work together to make sure that he’s just surrounded by nothing but love, which i know is what you wanted.

Devon: Yeah.

Lily: But I’m also sensing a little shift in you since the baby’s been born?

Mariah: Okay, bowie. Okay. Shh! I know! I know. I know. I know. I know. Come on, kid, you got to work with me here. I changed your diaper. I sang you a lullaby. Come on. Please. What do you need? Jack: Oh, I was saying harrison apparently loves pizza in italy even more than he loves pizza here. Summer sent me this wonderful video of him helping her cook.

Lauren: Uh, “helping” being a relative term when you’re talking about a 3-year-old.

Jack: Actually, you’d be amazed. This kid is ahead of the curve. Now, they have this little place outside milan, and it has an outdoor pizza oven. And he was adding the cheese just so.

Lauren: Aww. Sounds so adorable.

Jack: Most amazing thing about this kid is he is adaptable. I mean, he has adjusted to life in europe in no time flat.

Lauren: Well, that’s what kids do. They’re really good at adapting. But he must miss his mom. I mean, they were so attached.

Jack: Yeah, that was the one authentic thing about that woman. She was committed to her little boy, fiercely so, it turned out.

Lauren: Well, I almost felt sorry for her. I don’t think she knew what she was getting herself into, taking on phyllis.

Jack: No, and I regret ever pressuring phyllis to lay off of her and sally, but her instincts were exactly on target, as usual.

Lauren: Yeah. Yeah. Our dear friend has a real gift for being able to read people.

Jack: And now summer and kyle owe their happiness to her.

Lauren: That is true. And phyllis will never let them forget that.

Jack: Oh, you can bet she won’T.

[ Both laugh ]

Nate: So, they’re playing the processional. All the guests are standing up, looking towards the back of the church at the bride’s father, who is standing there alone in the vestibule, wondering where the heck his daughter is.

Victoria: Uh-oh.

Ashland: Had she fled the premises?

Nate: No, nothing that dramatic. Apparently, she had went back to the bride’s room for something blue and told her attendants to go on ahead. Well, as she was rushing up the stairs in her high heels, she falls and twists her ankle.

Victoria: Oh, no!

Nate: Yes. The poor groom is dying a thousand deaths, thinking he’s been stood up at the altar.

[ Chuckles ] Well, long story short, the bride was found. I grabbed my medical bag and taped up her ankle. The ceremony went on as planned. Unfortunately, she wasn’t able to join in on the electric slide.

[ Laughter ]

Ashland: Well, it seems like you’re the right man to have on hand in a crisis.

Nate: Always pays to have a doctor in the house. Which reminds me of the time i was a groomsman for one of my college buddies —

Elena: Alright, no more, no more, no more.

[ Laughter ] Enough wedding horror stories. That’s the last thing we need to hear.

Victoria: Well, I could tell a few of my own, so this is good. I’m taking notes on how to avoid disaster so that our day will be perfect.

Ashland: Mwah!

Sally: I am really glad that we downshifted from a date to a working dinner.

Adam: You are, huh?

Sally: Yeah. And we can ignore all those “what not to do on a date” rules. Like, I wore my comfy shoes. And you were 20 minutes late.

Adam: Okay, those are not comfy shoes. And I’m sorry about that.

Sally: It’s fine. Really. This is exactly what I’m talking about. It’s better than if you bailed. And I’m guessing there was pressure on you to do that.

Adam: Um…

Sally: Yeah, that’s what i thought. It’s fine. Really. This is not my first time hanging out with a real sob — son of a billionaire…

Adam: [ Chuckles ]

Sally: …Who didn’t realize he was one growing up.

Adam: Really? You don’t say.

Sally: Yeah. There’s a lot more of you out there than you might think. You could start a club. Or a support group.

Adam: Uh, I think that we should get down to business. Did you, um — you bring some sample designs?

Sally: Mnh-mnh. You’re gonna have to wait on that ’cause I’m starving since you were —

Adam: Yes. Late. Sorry…again.

Elena: Cooking podcasts. I’m obsessed.

Victoria: Oh, my god.

[ Chuckling ] Me too!

Elena: Really?

Victoria: Yes! The more complicated, the better.

Elena: What? I didn’t know you liked to cook.

Victoria: No, I hate it. I’m terrible.

Ashland: Oh, don’t listen to her. She makes a fine grilled cheese.

Victoria: Well, I mean, only if I’m really paying attention, but if I try to get too fancy, then forget it.

Elena: I totally get that.

Victoria: It’s like that, you know, fantasy element, creating the perfect dish with that wild presentation.

Elena: Like an edible flower sprinkled on a plate?

Victoria: Yes, exactly that.

Elena: I’m an okay cook, and I kind of enjoy it, but, honestly, who has the time?

Victoria: Mm.

Elena: I’m lucky if I can heat up my takeout before devouring it.

Victoria: [ Chuckles ]

Elena: And my former roommate, the chef, would be appalled if she saw the way I’ve been eating lately.

Nate: Mnh, I beg to differ. Lola would be impressed as hell with what you’re doing with your time. You’re making a huge difference in a lot of lives.

Elena: Mm.

Victoria: Well, I am gonna go freshen up.

Elena: I think I’m gonna join you.

Ashland: That’s the face of a man who knows precisely how lucky he is.

Nate: I certainly do.

Ashland: [ Chuckles ]

Devon: Amanda asked me that same question — if I regret stepping up to be the donor or, you know, a part of dom’s extended family. And my answer is no. I knew how important it was for abby and chance to start a family, and I’m still happy that I was able to help them do it.

Lily: Yeah, so am I, but you know if your answer were different, I wouldn’t judge you, right?

Devon: Yeah, of course I do.

Lily: ‘Cause I know what it’s like to be in abby’s shoes, you know, needing a surrogate. So I know the thoughts that can go through your head, and I want you to know I’m here if you ever want to talk about any of it.

Devon: I don’t know. Just when I think of that first moment that I held dominic and when I heard him take his first few breaths, you know, in life, I — I just remember I had that thought and that feeling of, “this is it, and this is — this is what it’s really like to be a father.” And, you know, it just brought up a lot of emotions.

Lily: Yeah, well, especially ’cause you should have been a father awhile ago. You know, how could you not think about hillary and the baby that you lost?

Devon: Yeah. I mean, I’m — I’m sure she’s smiling, looking down, proud.

Lily: But you miss her… and your baby.

Devon: Yeah.

Lily: And I want you to know that you can talk to me about any of that, as well. You know, I — I won’t make it about my own feelings of guilt. I just — I just want to be here for you, if you’ll let me.

Devon: I appreciate that. I do.

Abby: Mariah? Mariah, hey, uh, I found someone to come in to work, so you’re off the hook. Mariah? Okay, uh, maybe — maybe she’s, uh, feeding him, uh, or rocking him. Mariah? Mariah? Not touching is still touching protection.

Sally: Was it wrong of me to want the forresters to include my designs in their couture collection out of sympathy, knowing I was at death’s door? Maybe. Yes. But it didn’t hurt anyone, right? I mean, especially since those designs were good.

Adam: If you do say so yourself.

Sally: Ridge and eric are businessmen first. They would not have included them otherwise. And if they actually made it down the runway, I believe they would have been huge sellers. It would have been a win-win for both of us.

Adam: I mean, when you think about it, you were doing them a favor.

Sally: You know what? When it comes to my career, i refuse to be humble. I am one hell of a good designer. I just have the unfortunate tendency of getting in my own way, which I am working on. And I have a feeling you can relate.

Adam: [ Sighs ] You’re not wrong.

Ashland: Harrison seems to be quite taken with gelato.

Nate: Chocolate and vanilla. Good man.

Ashland: You have kids?

Nate: Not yet, but, um, someday hopefully. I’ve learned that, uh, you can’t always make firm plans when it comes to your personal life.

Ashland: The way you said that — have you ever been married?

Nate: I was engaged once. Uh, she passed.

Ashland: Oh, I’m sorry to hear that.

Nate: Thank you.

Ashland: It makes even more sense now, why you don’t react to me the way others do since my diagnosis. You don’t have that same squeamishness or distance that i sense in others. I assumed it was because you’re a doctor, but there’s more to it. You’ve gone through your own personal loss and grief. You don’t see it as foreign or frightening.

Elena: Ah. They seem to be getting along well.

Victoria: You know, nate stepped up for ashland in a big way after his first chemo session. He brought him home. He let him talk. He gave him some really good advice. He’s a good man.

Elena: Yeah. He is.

[ Chuckles ]

Jack: Let’s see. “I cannot help you, for I am only a cookie.”

Lauren: It does not say that!

Jack: Oh, no, it doesn’t say that. Let me see. We’ll play a little trombone here.

Jack: I don’t know about that.

Jack: I am thrilled, though, that summer and kyle have found their way back to each other.

Jack: Well, they are planning a small civil ceremony in italy, in contrast to what ashland locke and victoria are planning.

Lauren: Right, and quite a contrast from what kyle and summer were planning, as well, before all this craziness happened and they got derailed.

Jack: You know what? I’m glad they took things down a bit. I think they learned a lesson. They have everything they need to be happy right now, without all the extras.

Lauren: Mm. And what about you, my friend? Do you have everything you need to be happy?

Lily: So, how is abby dealing with chance being gone now that the baby’s here? I know having a family was their dream. It must be so hard for her to not have him here to share that with her.

Devon: Yeah, of course it is. She’s — she’s just staying strong and trying to keep the faith that he’s gonna come home to her soon.

Lily: And you took my advice, right?

Devon: About what? Not ragging on chance in front of her?

Lily: Yeah. I mean, I know that you were resenting him for not being here when she needed him.

Devon: Yeah, yeah, no, I — I told you I wasn’t gonna say that to her. It was just the last thing she needed to hear.

Lily: And now?

Devon: I mean, now I just kind of feel sorry for him ’cause there’s a lot of big moments that have happened that he’s never gonna get back. And I think when he’s home, it’s really gonna hit him hard.

Lily: Does he even know he has a son?

Devon: He’s gone deeper undercover, and we can’t get any messages to him. So I started to wonder if maybe it’s safer that he doesn’t know.

Lily: Well, look, I’m sure when he gets home, he’s gonna be very grateful to you for looking after abby and his son.

[ Cellphone ringing ] Oh. Hey, abby. What’s up?

Abby: Hey, have you heard from mariah?

Devon: Not recently. Why?

Abby: I had to go in to society for a bit, and mariah offered to watch dom, but I got home and they are gone. There’s no note or anything.

Devon: I assume you called her cellphone. Did it just go to voicemail or what?

Abby: Well, she left her phone at home. That’s weird, right? I mean, I’m trying not to freak out, but —

Devon: Yeah, no, don’t freak out. Don’t freak out at all. Um, just give me a minute, and I’ll be right over, okay?

Abby: [ Sighs ]

Devon: So, abby got back home from work, and mariah and the baby aren’t where she expected them to be.

Lily: Well, no. Go, please. You need to be there.

Jack: Oh, boy, does it. I got used to all the noise and commotion and excitement, looking forward to the holidays, having a funny, happy kid like harrison around for halloween. Boy, it doesn’t get better than that.

Lauren: [ Chuckles ] Well, maybe they can come for a visit.

Jack: Yeah. I mean, sure they can. I’m still gonna have to get used to all the quiet in this house. And all the extra time I have on my hands. You know, thank god I’ve got work. I can pour myself into jabot and the abbott-winters foundation.

Lauren: Right, but that’s for your mind. You need something to fill your heart. You need a passion, and it doesn’t necessarily need to be romantic.

Jack: You know what? I have come to the conclusion that I’ve had my share of grand passions. Now looking after harrison, being “grandpa” — that’s what fed my heart. Soothing his little worries, exciting his imagination, teaching him the things that my father taught me. I mean, I can do those things over the phone, some of them, but it’s just not the same thing.

Lauren: You know, I’ve never thought of being a grandparent in those terms. The way you talk about it, it sounds very appealing. Of course, my sons aren’t even close to settling down, so…

Jack: I’m telling you, the day is gonna come, and when it does, trust me — you are gonna love it.

Victoria: I have a lovely cabernet in the kitchen.

Elena: Sounds great. I’ll help you.

Ashland: Please.

Nate: So, uh, will victoria’s kids be going to italy for the wedding?

Ashland: Oh, you know, I’m hoping that they can make it. Tuscany is absolutely gorgeous in the fall, and I’d love for them to see it.

Nate: Yeah. I, um — I went there with my mother when I was young. Still remember it. We went all over — tuscany, umbria, le marche.

Ashland: Nice.

Nate: I also saw quite a bit of europe when I was in boarding school. But I haven’t been back since.

Ashland: Why don’t you and elena join us at the wedding? Victoria and I would love to have you there. Uh…I know it might be a little presumptuous, and you can clearly say no, but, uh… I-I-I’d — I’d like for you to be my best man.

Nate: Wow, uh, that’s, uh, quite generous of you. Are you sure? I mean, we’re still getting to know each other.

Ashland: No, you know, I’ve always been able to size up people pretty quickly. You are a brilliant and kind man who has a — a deeper understanding of what I’m going through than most and…

Nate: I’m sure you have friends in new york you could ask.

Ashland: Yeah, I’m sure, but, I mean, to be quite honest, they’re mostly people I’ve met through work. The connections were more professional than personal, you know? I’m just not in that world right now. And, quite frankly, most people are clearly having a difficult time with my medical situation. Anyway, just think about it. There’s no pressure. I-I-I-I would love to have you and elena join us for the ceremony. It’s gonna be a blast.

Mariah: Oh, uh, bowie — sorry — uh, dominic was crying his head off, and I had no idea what to do. So I called the pediatrician, and he said that going out for a walk might help. And look. It worked.

Abby: Okay, I-I just, um — you didn’t leave a note or — you didn’t bring your phone. I mean, I had no way of getting a hold of you.

Mariah: Oh. Sorry. Yeah. I — when the baby cries, my brain short-circuits. It must be the hormones. But, um, everything is fine. I’m sorry if you got worried.

Abby: It’s just, the last time you disappeared with the baby, I mean, you were gone for three weeks. I almost called the police.

Mariah: Oh. Again, I’m — I’m really, really sorry, but we were just out for a walk on the grounds. That’s all. No need for alarm.

Adam: I like the simplicity of the lines. And yet there’s a — there’s a richness to it. You have a specific bride in mind, which is a good thing. Even though, uh, victoria might not be inclined to choose a design from a woman who works for the company that’s owned by her black-sheep brother.

Adam: Is there something more that you want me to say?

Sally: I’m just mainly curious as to why you agreed to come out with me since we’ve established this was not a date, but also really wasn’t about work. We could have had this five-minute conversation in the office.

Adam: I mean, isn’t it obvious at this point? I’m here for the scintillating conversation.

Sally: Or maybe you were hoping that the news of this non-date would get back to someone in particular and make them jealous?

Adam: Oh! Maybe you were hoping that jack would hear about it.

Abby: And I am gonna bring this little guy to bed. Be right back. Come on, baby. Let’s go.

Mariah: I apologize. I-I just didn’t want to bother abby at work, and I figured i could handle it on my own. Then the baby started crying his head off. I had no idea what to do. I was worried that he might be sick or something, so I even called the pediatrician.

Devon: You did exactly what you were supposed to do. What did he say?

Mariah: Well, he said that a walk sometimes can lull a baby to sleep, so I tried it, and it did the trick.

Devon: Nice.

Mariah: But I just — I got so panicky and flustered, I-I forgot my phone, and I am kind of embarrassed. I crumbled under the pressure.

Devon: It doesn’t sound like that’s what you did. It sounds like you asked an expert for advice and then you did exactly what the baby needed and everything worked out fine. I’m actually happy that you were with dom and you followed your natural instincts.

Mariah: Man, this being a mom thing is not for wimps. It’s a lot harder than it looks.

Devon: Yeah.

Mariah: Well, it wouldn’t feel like home if I didn’t come to crimson lights and have my special, so…

Sharon: Well, welcome home, sweetheart. Your favorite’s coming right up. Did you, uh, manage to have a nice time at abby’s?

Mariah: Uh, yeah. Yeah, sure.

Tessa: It was really nice. Abby went all out, of course, because that’s what she always does.

Sharon: Um, hey, mariah, what size drink do you want?

Tessa: Mariah?

Sharon: Uh, I know. Uh, how about I surprise you with my world-famous special double mocha? Mariah? What’s wrong?

[ Footsteps approaching ]

Abby: I am happy to report that the man of the hour is napping.

Devon: Oh, that’s good. I can’t blame him. It’s got to be exhausting being the center of attention like that.

Abby: Well, you got to admit, he’s pretty good at it.

Devon: He’s great at it, actually.

[ Both laugh ]

Abby: Now I am going to break in my new baby monitor.

Devon: Nice. Very nice. That party was a lot of fun. I think everybody had a really good time.

Devon: What do you mean?

Abby: I feel like she’s going through a hard time — and not just with the kidnapping. And I could be off, but I’m sensing that you’re going through a hard time, too?

Moses: Faith.

Faith: Hi, moses.

Moses: Good news?

Faith: I got a text from mariah’s girlfriend. They’re at crimson lights.

Moses: Oh, so they finally let her out of the hospital?

Faith: I cannot wait to see her. Do you want to come with me?

Moses: Oh, no. I don’t want to get in the way of your family reunion.

Faith: No, you wouldn’t be. I want mariah to get to know you.

Moses: Yeah, but after everything she’s been through, I’m sure she just wants to be around people she’s close with right now.

Faith: Yeah. You’re right. I hadn’t thought about that.

Moses: But I’ll catch up with you afterward.

Faith: What will you do while you wait?

Moses: Maybe I’ll start brainstorming. I did promise you that I’d come up with a cool idea for our first date.

Adam: [ Breathes deeply ]

Rey: Glad we’re getting off to a good start.

Adam: Mm-hmm. Well, I’m happy to have a do-over if, uh — what is this? That’s connor’S.

Rey: Yeah. I’m returning it.

[ Cap thuds ] I ran into him in the park earlier. I hadn’t seen him since we got back from minnesota. Told me how much fun he’d had at lacrosse camp. Anyhow, when he took off with his nanny, I noticed he’d forgotten his cap.

Adam: Uh-huh. I remember when I bought this for connor. He wouldn’t take it off for a week. He slept in it, took a bath in it. It’s his favorite. He would, uh, be crushed if he lost it.

Rey: Well, crisis averted.

Adam: Mm. I’m sure that he’ll want to thank you.

Rey: It’s not a problem.

Adam: Mm-hmm. Hey, and my dad told me about what happened to mariah and how you helped track her down. Sounds like you deserve some major props.

Rey: Devon hamilton’s the real hero. Make a pretty good detective. He had a feeling about stitch, and he never let it go.

Adam: Well, I had no idea that things had gotten so far off course.

Rey: You say that as if you were expecting updates. Why would you think you’re part of the inner circle?

Adam: Because I care?

Rey: About mariah or about sharon?

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Well, would you look at that. That is the longest conversation we’ve had without sharon coming up. Sure was nice while it lasted, rey, but your jealousy is constant.

Devon: No, abby. If it ever seems like I’m going through a hard time, it’s really just ’cause I’m trying to figure out the best way to support you.

Abby: Well, you’re my friend, like always.

Devon: Yeah. I know. But you’re a new mom, and you have a baby for the first time. And that’s — you know, that’s uncharted territory for you.

Abby: I’m still the same person.

Devon: Okay, well, say that to me at 4:00 in the morning when you’ve had no sleep.

Abby: Be serious.

Devon: I am being very serious. I — you know, you’ve —

[ Sighs ] You’ve waited for this moment for a long time, and now your son is here, um, but chance isn’T. And, you know, you’re gonna have to figure out how to be a parent without your partner, at least for the time being.

Abby: Women have had babies with or without partners for centuries.

Devon: But it doesn’t make things any easier for you. And I don’t know how to be. I don’t want to burden you by being over here too much. And at the same time, I don’t want to just leave you hanging, so…

Abby: You could never be a burden. I want you to be over here anytime that you want to be over here. You’re my best friend. And I can talk to you about things that I can’t talk about with mariah or nina or even my mom.

Devon: Yeah?

Abby: Definitely. And I hope that doesn’t change because of all of this. I mean, I hope you don’t start hiding things from me or being afraid that I’m overwhelmed.

Devon: Open and honest. It’s a deal.

Abby: Yeah.

Sharon: So? What’s the verdict?

Mariah: This tastes… exactly the same, which is incredibly reassuring.

Sharon: Well, that’s good to know. But you still haven’t answered my question about what’s going on with you.

Mariah: Oh, that? I just spaced out earlier. It’s really nothing. Everything’s been such a whirlwind since abby and devon found me in that room.

Sharon: I can tell when something’s on your mind. I mean, if you’re not ready to talk about it, um — you know, I am your mother, so there’s no reason to hold back.

Mariah: I have been struggling to get on top of my emotions, yeah. Um… it’s been difficult, you know? I was just in that room for so long, you know, just bowie and me.

Sharon: Well, do you feel comfortable telling us more about how you spent your time?

Mariah: Yeah, um… I mostly talked to the baby. You know, I made promises. I promised that I was gonna keep him safe, that we were gonna make it out of it alive. There was no way that I was gonna break my word, so…

Tessa: That’s a lot of pressure to put on yourself, especially when you didn’t know what was happening.

Mariah: Well, it was my job. It was…more than a job. He was everything to me. He was my reason for living. And then a last-minute rescue, giving birth under crazy circumstances, being whisked to the hospital — it was all very intense and urgent. And then bowie — dominic — goes home with his mother. And now what?

Sharon: You bonded with that baby. And now you feel like something’s been taken from you. I brought in ensure max protein,

Devon: Some of those things you said about mariah have me a little bit concerned, though. What have you seen?

Abby: I was in the room with her and she woke up from a nightmare and she looked so lost. She was inconsolable, and — I don’t know — I just — I’ve been around her, and I feel like she’s just pretending to be okay when she’s really not.

Devon: I mean, that’s pretty understandable, given what she went through, you know?

Abby: I mean, she’s a strong woman, but what she went through — I mean, that would test anyone.

Devon: You think there’s more to it?

Abby: [ Sighs ] I don’t know. I-I can’t put my finger on it, but, I mean, I’m thinking about it, and she was locked in a tiny room. She was trying to protect dominic, and she had no one to talk to. She didn’t even know if anyone was looking for her.

Devon: I’m sure she felt like it was just her and that baby against the whole world.

Abby: Then she gives birth and she has to hand the baby over and — I mean, it’s got to be an overwhelming feeling.

Devon: I think that when stitch took her, he also took her away from all of her friends and her family that she actually wanted to spend time with, you know? I think she really wanted to make plans with you guys and go shopping for the baby and, you know, go to doctor’s appointments together ’cause those last few weeks of being pregnant — that’s an important time.

Abby: That’s true, yeah.

Devon: And even though she’s back and she’s safe, she still has some things to work through. But at least we know that it has nothing to do with you and it has nothing to do with the baby. It’s just about what stitch put her through.

Abby: I hope you’re right.

Devon: I mean, there’s a way to find out. You could just sit her down, have a face-to-face and see if she opens up to you. I actually think that she would really appreciate knowing how concerned you are.

Mariah: There’s a bond. It’s real. And I know I’m not supposed to. He’s not my baby. I — I know that.

Tessa: Love is never a bad thing. And feeling a bond — that’s okay, right?

Sharon: Of course.

Mariah: So, what am i supposed to do with all these feelings?

Sharon: You gave birth to that baby, and you have a connection that’s never gonna go away, that’s lifelong, you know? Only this is different because he’s abby’s son. But he wouldn’t be here without you.

Mariah: [ Sniffles ] I have to keep reminding myself that his name is not bowie.

Sharon: No, that — you don’T. You can call the little guy whatever you want because when he grows up, you can use that nickname, and it’ll be a special thing just between the two of you.

Tessa: I mean, it’s the coolest nickname ever. He’ll thank you.

Sharon: Right now, you need to do something, something for yourself. You need to go to abby and be honest with her about how you’re feeling.

Mariah: I — I don’t know if I can.

Sharon: It’s really important. You need to talk to her about this bond that you feel with the baby, this connection. You know what? She’s gonna be very supportive.

Mariah: Mom, I just don’t know.

Sharon: She knows what you did for her. She’s your friend. She wants what’s best for you.

Mariah: [ Sighs ] How is that you always have the best advice?

Faith: Mariah!

Sharon: Faith!

Mariah: Faith!

Faith: Tessa told me you were here. I missed you so much.

Mariah: Oh, I missed you, too.

Adam: Not everything in the world revolves around sharon. Abby is my sister. So that makes that little bundle of joy my nephew.

Rey: Oh. I forgot how close you and abby are, always hanging out.

Adam: And I do care about what happens to mariah.

Rey: Because she’s sharon’s daughter. Come on, man. Mariah wouldn’t even be on your radar if she wasn’t connected to sharon. It’s not like you have this reputation for caring about other people.

Adam: So, you’re saying that I should just hit the off switch on my feelings, that sharon doesn’t deserve any of my concern?

Rey: That’s not what I said.

Adam: But it’s exactly what you meant, rey. Okay, the history that sharon and I have — you can’t erase something like that. Sharon is the most decent, loving person that I know, and i only care about what is best for her and the people that matter to her. So, you can either accept that, or you can fly into a fit of rage every time that you hear my name, and we can go round and around in this circle until the end of time. It’s your call.

[ Laughter ]

Sharon: I’m surprised you didn’t want to get in on that over there.

Tessa: Well, I could say the same about you.

Sharon: I was tempted to join them, but I think they deserve this time together.

[ Laughter ]

Tessa: And that’s why.

Mariah: You do realize your pledge to torture and destroy stitch would get us both locked away forever?

Faith: [ Chuckles ]

Mariah: But I love how protective you are.

Faith: Where is he?

Mariah: Um… sorry. Uh, he’s gone. Yeah, and hopefully we will never have to be worried about him again.

Faith: Are you okay? Mom and dad didn’t tell me much because they don’t want me to freak out. But they don’t have to keep things from me.

Mariah: Cut them some slack. You had a rough year, alright?

Faith: But I survived. And I’m stronger because of it. I put all of that darkness behind me. And that is why I want to know what happened to you. We’re sisters. I want to help you.

Mariah: Alright. Why don’t we do a girls’ night really soon? And I will — I will tell you everything. I promise. Just not right this minute because it’s still a little fresh.

Faith: Whenever you’re ready. And don’t feel too pressured to move on. It’s not like you can just snap your fingers and make all those memories go away. Just focus on all of the people that care about you right now, and it’ll make it easier.

Mariah: Wow. You’ve changed in the short time that I was away.

Faith: [ Chuckles ] How?

Mariah: You’re more solid, positive, sure of things. Yeah.

Faith: [ Chuckles ]

Mariah: Would this have anything at all to do with moses?

Faith: [ Laughs ] It has so much to do with him, it’s crazy.

Devon: Alright. Thank you. I appreciate it. Yeah. Yeah. I know. I wish that, uh — I wish it were better news, too. That’s okay. We’ll do what we can. Alright. Take care.

Abby: Christine?

Devon: Yeah. It’s, uh — it’s not the update we were hoping for.

Abby: What did she say?

Devon: Chance has been forced to go even deeper undercover, and she hasn’t been able to get any messages to him.

Abby: Okay, well, um, that’s — that’s not the news that we wanted to hear, but, you know, things — things change so quickly.

Devon: Yeah.

Abby: You know, I am — I am really trying to be patient. But chance deserves to know that his son was born, and that baby sleeping upstairs — he deserves to meet his father.

Devon: I know, abby. You just have to remember that there’s nothing that chance wants more than to come back here to you. Don’t forget that, okay?

Abby: I know. I know that. But it’s just so damn hard.

Devon: I know it is, and you know what? Maybe we just have to think about this in a different way. It might sound crazy, but maybe it’s a good thing that he doesn’t know about dominic being born.

Abby: I can’t believe that you’d say that.

Devon: If he’s had to go that deep undercover to where he can’t even get any messages, I imagine that things have gotten pretty intense for him. And if he were to find out that the baby was born, that might just completely distract him, take his head out of the game. You know? It might even make his situation even more dangerous. We don’t know. I just think that it’s probably best if we don’t make him feel any more guilty than he already feels about not being here for you.

Abby: You always know the right thing to say.

Rey: You got enough to worry about in your own family. You don’t need to insert yourself into anyone else’S.

Adam: What is that supposed to mean?

Rey: It means stop worrying about sharon’s daughter. Worry about your son.

Adam: Why is that? Because he lost his hat?

Rey: When I talked to him at the park, I could tell something was going on with him. You’re here. Chelsea’s out of the state. That can get confusing for a kid.

Adam: Look, my family situation is under control. Thank you very much.

Rey: Yeah? Do you have it under control? Because it didn’t sound that way to me.

Adam: Get out of my office, rey.

Rey: I will. But this needs to be said. Connor’s wondering when the three of you are gonna be a family again. He’s a smart kid. He can sense that things are different. Look, I’m not here to tell you how to handle your business. But I am here to tell you that things need handling. That should be your focus, not what’s going on in sharon’s life.

[ Door slams ] I order my groceries online now.

Faith: What’s going on here? Am I interrupting something?

Devon: That depends. I don’t know. How well do we know this — this young lady here to share with her what we’re talking about?

Moses: Ohh. You know, I’m not too sure, but maybe we should be a little vague with the detail, just in case.

Faith: You guys! What’s going on?

Devon: I was just telling moses here that I called his mom now that he’s decided to take a step back from pursuing a career in medicine.

Moses: Which was the sole reason she let me move to genoa city in the first place — to learn from nate.

Devon: Well, it’s not the only reason that she had you come out here. She also wanted you to be around the rest of your family — lily, me, and nate. But, uh, I told her that even though he’s not trying to be a doctor still, it’s gonna benefit a lot from learning the ropes of hamilton-winters.

Faith: So, does that mean…

Devon: Well, we don’t know if he’s sticking around yet ’cause his mom didn’t commit to anything on the phone. So it’s gonna be up to you, moses, to sell her that you want to stay here, if that is what you really want to do.

Moses: Yeah. That’s what I want.

Sharon: I’m glad you and faith got some time to catch up.

Mariah: Yeah, I wish I could bottle her, carry her around with me. She’s such a light.

Sharon: I know. I’m really proud of both of my girls. Is everything okay with tessa?

Mariah: Uh, yeah. She’s just, uh — she’s canceling her gig tonight. I told her it wasn’t necessary, but she wants to spend as much time with me as she can.

Sharon: And how do you feel about that?

Mariah: I hate it.

[ Laughs ] Don’t get me wrong. I’m grateful that she wants to take care of me, but we’ve worked so hard on her career up to this point, and I would really hate it if she started canceling gigs right now because of me.

Sharon: Well, you might have to be patient with all of us. We probably seem a little clingy right now, but that’s because when you disappeared, we were all really upset and frustrated for weeks, thinking that you were pushing us away. And then we realized that you were in real danger, we were kicking ourselves for not realizing that stitch had been manipulating us all this time.

Mariah: Yeah, I-I really don’t want you to feel guilty. I-I don’t want to have to keep reassuring people that I don’t blame them.

Sharon: Okay. I’ll do my best to stop blaming myself.

Mariah: Now that I talked to faith — uh, you and nick didn’t let her know how bad things had gotten.

Sharon: Uh, maybe it was naive to think I could try to protect her, but that was my instinct.

Mariah: You know, she’s growing up really fast. And she’s stronger than you think, so you should treat her that way.

[ Footsteps approaching ]

Adam: Hey.

Sharon: Oh. Hi.

Adam: Mariah, I am so happy that you are safe and you’re back home where you belong.

Mariah: Thank you.

Adam: Did I say something wrong?

Mariah: Yeah, sorry if I’m a little tense around people like you right now, but I was just freed from the clutches of a madman who kidnapped me without a care for the life of an unborn baby because he wanted to win back a certain woman and get her to like him again.

Adam: I am so sorry for everything that you’ve gone through. I was just trying to express some sympathy. I get that I’m not one of your favorite people.

Sharon: I know that he wouldn’t try to do anything to make you uncomfortable.

Mariah: [ Scoffs ]

Adam: I won’t interrupt you anymore.

Mariah: You don’t always have to take his side, you know.

Tessa: Is everything okay?

Sharon: Look, it’s over, okay? I wasn’t taking adam’s side. I was just trying to diffuse the tension. I know he’s trying to make a change, and it makes it harder when no one will let him.

Mariah: Point taken. How’d your phone call go?

Tessa: Uh, they wouldn’t let me out of the gig.

Mariah: Good, because I feel fine. I just need to get home and pump for the baby, like, immediately, so…

Sharon: Will you please let me know if you need anything?

Mariah: Yes. I will. I love you.

Sharon: I love you. What are you doing here? I thought you said that you were gonna keep your distance.

Adam: I’ve known for a while that I need to tell connor about what is going on with me and chelsea. So I came here to get your advice as his former therapist on how to go about that. But clearly that was a mistake. Guess I should have kept on walking.

Devon: I have to take off, but I want you to let me know the second you talk to your mom.

Moses: Yeah, I will.

Devon: Alright, and if she has any questions or concerns about your internship at hamilton-winters, just tell her to give me a call.

Moses: Yeah, I’ll call her today.

Devon: Alright?

Moses: Okay.

Devon: I’m glad you’re sticking around, man.

Moses: Thanks.

Devon: And I know I’m not the only one. See ya. Hey.

Mariah: Hey.

Devon: How you doing? You guys getting some fresh air?

Mariah: Uh, yeah, for a little bit, and then we got to head back to the chancellor house.

Tessa: Yeah, I got to run to the club to do my sound check for the gig tonight.

Mariah: Uh, how was the rest of the party?

Devon: It was — it was alright. It kind of died down after you left.

Tessa: Well, we are traditionally known as the life of the party, so no surprise there.

Devon: [ Chuckles ] Hey, I didn’t get a chance to say this to you earlier, um, but if you ever need a shoulder to lean on or anything like that, you know I’m here for you.

Mariah: Thank you. Yeah. But you’ve already done so much for me. And I never thanked you for everything you did to find me and supporting me through labor, no matter how much I screamed. Everything’s fine. Everything’s gonna be fine. I have the best support team in the world, you included. You’ll always be the guy who delivered my baby.

Tessa: Uh, well, I should get you home.

Devon: Is everything alright?

Mariah: Yeah. Uh, yeah. I just — I have to get home to pump for bow– for dominic. And, uh… you’ll always be a hero in my book.

Devon: Oh, come on. I was just in the right place at the right time. And, believe me, I’m damn glad that I was, but that doesn’t make me a hero. I just got lucky this time. But I’ve got stuff I struggle with, just like everybody else.

When you really need to sleep

Faith: Moses, this talk with your mom isn’t just a normal phone call. This is the most important phone call of your entire life.

Moses: Are you trying to make me nervous?

Faith: The opposite. I’m trying to make sure this is an unqualified success.

Moses: Okay. How you gonna do that?

Faith: We’ll rehearse it. I’ll play your mother, and you’ll be you.

Moses: [ Laughs ]

Faith: What’s so funny?

Moses: You — you don’t look a thing like my mom.

Faith: Not the point, okay? I promise this will help. Okay. Pretend to call me. Take out your phone. Dial the numbeR.

Moses: You can’t be serious.

Faith: The closer this is to the real thing, the better it’ll go.

Moses: Okay. Hey, ma.

Faith: Moses, your brother tells me you no longer want to be a doctor. So, what’s the real reason why you want to stay in genoa city?

Moses: She doesn’t talk like that.

[ Chuckles ] Okay. Um, yeah. Devon offered me an internship at hamilton-winters.

Faith: Really? Are you sure you don’t want to just waste your time on girls?

Moses: [ Laughs ] Okay. There is this one girl. But she’s definitely not a waste of time.

Faith: Really? Tell me all about this girl who thinks she’s good enough for my son.

Moses: Okay, now you’re just messing with me.

Faith: I’m waiting, moses. If you don’t tell me all about this girl, I will make you take the next flight back to new york.

Moses: Okay. Her name is faith newman, and she’s one in a trillion.

[ Chuckles ] She’s got a great family. Dad even used to work with her grandfather. She’s smart. She’s beautiful. And maybe I’m the one who doesn’t deserve her.

[ Chuckles ] She’s funny. She’s fun. She loves reading and movies. She makes me happy. Honest, thoughtful, fearless.

[ Chuckles ]

Faith: She sounds nice.

Moses: Oh, she is. And she’s one of the reasons why I can’t come home yet.

Faith: Well, what about me, moses?

Moses: Well, you’ll come and visit, ma. But this is an incredible opportunity for me. This place, these people, these families — they’re a part of dad, which means they’re a part of me, too, right? So, you taught me well, and i know you trust me.

Faith: I do.

Moses: I might be gone for a while, but you’ll never lose me. So…say yes, please. How was that?

Faith: You’ve got this. You’ll do great.

Sharon: I’m really glad that mariah and faith got to spend some time together.

Rey: They’re each other’s best medicine.

Sharon: I don’t know what i would do if I didn’t have those two girls in my life. I’ll never stop thanking my handsome husband for bringing mariah back home safe.

Rey: Well, thank you, but i think devon deserves a lot of the credit. I should have paid more attention to your intuition that something was wrong.

Sharon: You were just following the evidence, and there really wasn’t much to go on, other than gut feelings. And it doesn’t matter. All that matters is that mariah is home now, and hopefully she’ll be able to get through this without being scarred for life.

Rey: Yeah, I mean, any mother would be worried about that, but mariah is a warrior. That’s what got her through this ordeal. What she needs the most now is to know that the people around her love her and have her back.

Sharon: She does. For sure.

Rey: Uh, the way you said that… did something else happen today while mariah was here?

Sharon: Well, you’re very perceptive. Adam stopped by, and things got tense.

Rey: Tense how?

Sharon: Well, he’s never been her favorite person, and mariah went from zero to 100 in about one second. She was hostile and aggressive, and then when I tried to keep the peace, she accused me of taking his side. And I wasn’T. It was really all about mariah’s reaction. I hope I haven’t upset you now.

Rey: It’s — it’s fine.

Sharon: I know you think that mariah is a warrior, and she certainly is, but it’s gonna take a lot for her to get through this. And I just hope she gets the help she needs, whatever that is, a therapist.

Rey: Me too. And I am sure you’re gonna steer her in the right direction. Yeah, I actually had my own run-in with adam today.

Sharon: Really?

Rey: Mm-hmm. I saw connor at the park.

Sharon: Well, how’s he doing?

Rey: He seemed to have a great time at camp. He left his baseball cap behind, so I decided to drop it off with adam at newman media.

Sharon: Oh. How’d that go?

Rey: [ Chuckles ] Well, we ended up getting into it about his refusal to stay out of your life. So of course he comes over here and tries to get in the middle of things with you and mariah.

Sharon: Adam told me that he came here to get my advice on how to talk to connor about chelsea.

Billy: Well, you missed a doozy of a party last night.

Victoria: Well, no black eyes, no bruises. You don’t seem hungover. Those are all very positive signs.

Billy: No, I was on very good behavior, although some of the other guests, not so much.

Victoria: Really?

Billy: Yeah. There is a new troublemaker in town, and she is not afraid to take on the big dogs. Her name…

Victoria: Drum roll…

Billy: Sally spectra.

Victoria: Oh, really? What has sally pulled now?

Sally: Good morning.

Lily: And I think you’ll find everything in order, as we discussed.

Elena: [ Sighs ] I could only imagine what kind of glamorous perks newman media was gonna counter-offer with.

Lily: Wait. Newman media tried to steal you away?

Elena: Yeah. Nate didn’t tell you? Victor asked me last night if i had already signed my contract with chanccomm. He was apparently gonna make me this lucrative offer.

Lily: [ Exhales sharply ] Oh, my god. I cannot believe they would try to poach you like that.

[ Sighs ] Okay, well, I guess the gloves are off. The competition has officially begun.

[ Door closes ]

Sharon: Victor. Um, dominic and his entourage should be here pretty soon.

Victor: [ Chuckles ] This looks wonderful here. How is mariah doing after her ordeal?

Sharon: You know, she’s really going through a rough time, and we’re all doing everything we can to help her.

Victor: Oh, well, considering what mariah has done for abby, it will not be forgotten.

[ Doorbell rings ]

Sharon: Oh, um, that’s probably them now.

Victor: Oh. Wow.

Ashley: The grandmas have arrived!

Nick: All in all, I’d say the launch was a huge success. Newman media is off to a great start. I mean, adam even brought up the new hope tie-in in his opening speech.

Devon: Oh, that’s great, man. I apologize for not being there.

Nick: [ Chuckling ] Oh, come on, man. You’ve got enough going on. I can imagine when you signed on to help chance and abby create a baby, you didn’t think that you’d be literally delivering the baby, as well.

Devon: Dude, you have no idea. And the hardest part of the whole thing wasn’t even the actual birth. It was trying to wrap my mind around what the hell stitch did.

Nick: Yeah. Shocking. But you know what? It all worked out. And you, my friend, ended up looking like a real hero.

Mariah: Uh, hey, abby, have they heard anything about stitch at all? Does rey know where he is?

Abby: No, but I still believe that since he took max out of that care facility, he wouldn’t risk coming back here.

Tessa: Well, if he knows what’s good for him, he won’T. I hope him and max are far, far away from G.C.

Abby: You don’t have to worry. Devon hired extra security at the house. You’re gonna be safe.

Adam: Good morning.

Sally: I didn’t expect to see you up and out so early this morning.

Adam: Sally, relax.

Sally: Yeah, that’s easy for you to say ’cause after that kiss last night and you telling me that nothing like that can ever happen again, I can’t help but wonder what you might think of me in the cold light of day.

Adam: Oh, you mean this awkwardness — it had nothing to do with your little champagne and ice battle with phyllis?

Sally: She deserved that, and you know it. But, yes, yes, I do feel a little bit guilty about that. I’m just glad there’s not a meme of me drenched going viral somewhere ’cause that’s the last thing you need as the takeaway from your big event.

Adam: No, the night was an unqualified success, even if everybody did get a little side of drama with their shrimp puffs.

Sally: So, where does this leave us? We good?

Adam: We are good.

Sally: Great. So…dinner then?

Victoria: So, sally and adam — they showed up together at the party? Wow. Well, I have to say, the two of them royally deserve one another.

Billy: That’s actually not the only embarrassing moment sally had last night. She got into a drink-throwing competition with phyllis, ended up with a bucket of ice poured over her head.

Victoria: Oh, well, for the first time, I think I’m gonna have to side with phyllis after what sally pulled on summer. But I do not regret missing that party because I spent some quality time with our children.

Billy: Well, I’m not knocking you spending quality time with the children, of course, but nick told me that the reason you and ashland weren’t at the party is because he had his last chemo session. I hope he’s doing okay.

Victoria: Do you? Do you really? I mean, if you really cared, would you be going full steam ahead with your little locke story? You know, the one that was supposed to be about tara?

Billy: News is news.

Victoria: Yeah, well, I have a feeling it’s about more than that. You profess on one hand to be so supportive, but your focus of the investigation has shifted from the actual criminal, tara, and you’re now zeroing in on ashland.

Billy: I will always support you and our children, of course. It is your best interests that i have at heart.

Victoria: Well, that’s a good thing, but you have to understand that ashland is not the enemy here. I know you, billy. You just can’t help yourself. You will over-play anything negative that your reporters turn up, and you’ll use it to make ashland look bad.

Billy: Whatever we publish, it’ll be unbiased and fair.

Victoria: Well, I wish i could believe that, but I can already tell that this is going in an aggressive direction.

Billy: You feel that way because you sense it, too. Ashland is hiding something big.

Nate: Ashland. How you feeling?

Ashland: I’m doing much better. Thank you. Those supplements you gave me are definitely helping.

Nate: Glad to hear it.

Ashland: Now I want to repay the favor.

Nate: Hey, that’s absolutely not necessary.

Ashland: Well, uh, don’t turn it down until you see the number.

Nate: Seriously, it’s not that big of a deal.

[ Sighs ] Okay, are — are you kidding me? Look, I don’t know what those doctors in manhattan are charging you, but this — this is insane. Those supplements weren’t lined with gold or crushed diamonds.

Ashland: I’m well aware. This money is not for you.

Sharon: Abby’s gonna be so thrilled that the two of you are here.

Ashley: I’m just thrilled we were able to make it here in time for dominic’s homecoming.

Nina: Our little grandson.

Ashley: I know!

Nina: He truly is a miracle baby. I mean, we’re lucky he made it, in spite of everything that stitch did.

Ashley: I know. I can’t believe he put that child in such jeopardy, not to mention what he did to mariah.

Nina: It’s over now. Everyone’s safe and sound.

Ashley: Yeah. And we just have to be grateful, right? Because even though dominic was early, his vitals are healthy and strong. And we can just focus on the positive now.

Nina: Yeah. I’m just missing one thing. I — I really wish I could talk to chance.

Victor: Well, now, I wish he were here to welcome his son home.

Nina: Yeah. But I am not going to let anything get me down today. And, besides, chance wouldn’t want us missing him and worrying about him today. He’d want us to have a joyous and memorable homecoming for abby and the baby and mariah.

Tessa: Okay. So, how are you feeling?

Mariah: Uh…can’t lie. I’m — I’m a little anxious. My nerves are on edge just thinking about leaving here.

Tessa: Why? Most people are thrilled to leave the hospital.

Mariah: [ Sighs ] Yeah, but I just felt so safe here. And bowie was right down the hall, and I… when we go back to abby’s, the entire dynamic is gonna shift, and…I have to remember to start calling him dominic.

Tessa: I know that this is gonna be really difficult, but we’re still living at the chancellor house, so you’ll get to see the baby every day.

Mariah: Yeah. You’re right. You’re right. You know, it’s gonna be a lot better just knowing that he’s close by and I can see him and I can watch over him. It’s gonna be okay. It will be okay. It has to be okay.

Abby: The paperwork’s all taken care of. Now, let’s bring our baby boy home.

Billy: Come on. Be honest with me. Be honest with yourself. How much do you really know about ashland’s past — more specifically, his early years in the business world?

Victoria: So, it was you digging around in ashland’s past. Lily wouldn’t admit it outright.

Billy: There’s nothing to admit if his past was squeaky-clean, but it’s not.

Victoria: Okay, so, what are you gonna do? Are you just gonna keep digging around until you uncover something negative and then run a headline about it? Well, I have a news flash for you, billy. You dig around in anyone’s past long enough, you’ll find someone willing to trash them.

Billy: Victoria, it’s a very logical question. How did ashland pay for those two news stations? There is no record of bank loans or other investors, and it begs the question — what is the nature of his relationship with a much older, very wealthy mentor?

Victoria: Okay. That’s enough. Stay out of ashland’s life. Stay out of our lives.

Billy: Victoria, where’d the money come from? What’s he hiding, vick?

Nick: What the hell was that about?

Billy: I think I hit a nerve.

Chloe: Hey, guys.

Adam: Chloe. Hey, we missed you at the launch party last night.

Chloe: Yeah, it looks like i missed a lot. Sorry I missed it. Miles wasn’t feeling well.

Sally: Well, I’m sure you’re gonna hear about this sooner or later eventually, so you might as well hear about it from me. Phyllis and I got into it again.

Chloe: Ah, why am I not surprised?

Adam: Sally is totally underselling it. She threw a glass of champagne in phyllis’s face, and phyllis retaliated by pouring an ice bucket over her head.

Sally: Okay, you left out the part where phyllis goaded me into it.

Chloe: Adam, you know their dynamic. Why didn’t you keep an eye on them to make sure that things didn’t get out of control?

Adam: Thanks, chloe. I know that you can always find a reason to blame me for anything.

Chloe: [ Sighs ] So, what sort of damage control are we talking about here?

Sally: None, actually, whatsoever. Nobody posted a video of it, the press didn’t get a hold of it, and I’m sure that is a testament to adam’s outstanding P.R. Management.

Adam: Ah, she’s giving me more credit than I deserve. It was, uh, mostly just dumb luck. But I’m sure that you’ve noticed all the positive buzz we’ve gotten, so you should use that to your advantage for the fashion platform.

Chloe: Yeah, I’m already on it.

Adam: Oh, you should ask sally about the idea she came up with last night at the launch. It might be just what we need. Anyway, uh, I’ll see you at the office later.

Chloe: Well, I bet I know exactly what your great idea is all about.

Lily: God, newman media will stoop so low to beat chanccomm by any means necessary.

Elena: Lily, it’s totally fine. I am signing this contract. And just to make things perfectly clear, I didn’t entertain victor’s offer for even a second.

Lily: [ Chuckles ] Well, thank you. I’m very grateful for that. Loyalty is huge for me. And I promise you it will be repaid. And I’m already excited about all of your ideas.

Elena: Well, that means a lot coming from someone as accomplished as you are.

Lily: Aww. I don’t know about all that, but — [ Chuckles ]

Elena: Oh, I do. I’ve watched you step into this high-powered position with such poise and grace. How could I not admire you?

Lily: Thank you. I mean, it’s been a very long journey to get here.

Elena: Hey, lily, can I ask you a question?

Lily: Yeah, of course.

Elena: Actually, never mind. I don’t want to be intrusive, especially since you are now my boss.

Lily: Alright. You know what? We need to fix that.

Elena: What do you mean?

Lily: Well, we are officially off the clock, okay? And we are gonna go out, and we’re gonna have some long-overdue girl talk.

[ Both laugh ]

Ashley: Can you believe our abby’s a mother? She’s a mommy!

Victor: This is your first grandchild. Welcome to the club. It’s wonderful beyond anything you can imagine.

[ Doorbell rings ]

Devon: Hey!

Sharon: Hey! Did you buy the whole baby store?!

Devon: [ Chuckling ] Oh, no. Hello, everyone.

Victor: Oh, my goodness. Devon.

Ashley: Hi!

Devon: How are you? I just, uh —

Victor: Look at that.

Devon: I just came by to drop off these gifts. But, uh, I don’t want to crowd abby and mariah today. I know it’s a special moment for them.

Sharon: No, it’s a special moment for you, too. You should stay.

Nina: I see them! They’re here.

Devon: Yeah.

Sharon: Welcome, mariah.

Mariah: Hi. Wow.

Devon: Hey.

Ashley: Hi.

Victor: Hello, mariah.

Nina: Hi!

Devon: Looking good.

Abby: Oh, my gosh. Hi!

Nina: Oh!

Devon: There he is.

Abby: [ Sighing ] Ooh! Welcome, dominic, to your new home and family.

Abby: Oh, my gosh. Dominic, this is your grandma. This is grandma ashley.

Nina: Oh, my goodness.

Abby: She is my mom. And this is your other grandma, nana nina. This is chance’s mom.

Ashley: Abby, he’s just beautiful.

Abby: I know. [ Laughs ]

Ashley: Perfect. What a beautiful boy.

Abby: My gosh, dominic, look at all of these decorations.

[ Gasps ] You guys, you really went overboard. Thank you for making this day even more special.

Victor: You are lucky. You know that, don’t you?

Abby: [ Chuckles ]

Victor: Huh? You know what family you were born into, full of loving family members, the newmans, abbotts, chancellors, all loving you. You’ll be spoiled. You know that.

[ Laughter ] Yes. You’re the perfect mother.

Abby: Thank you.

Sally: I don’t know what you’re insinuating, chloe, but nothing happened between me and adam last night.

Chloe: Hey, I am not judging. I just saw the pictures online of you arriving on adam’s arm, and you two looked pretty cozy. So, just how did that happen, sally?

Sally: It was a completely innocent, last-minute thing.

Chloe: Nothing with adam is ever innocent. And after all the warnings i gave you, you just had to play with fire. So, how far did it go?

Sally: Things did heat up a little bit between us, but it was just a little.

Chloe: [ Scoffs ] Okay, there is no such thing as little heat. It’s either hot or it’s not. So, what happened?

Sally: It — it was an impulsive kiss, but it didn’t go any farther than that.

Chloe: Well [Sighs] At least you had the sense to slam on the brakes.

Sally: Actually, I was the one who initiated the kiss. It was adam who hit the brakes so hard and so fast I almost got whiplash. He — he’s the one that thought it was a mistake. He said that he was toxic.

Chloe: So, how many people have to tell you that before you finally hear it? Didn’t hearing it from the horse’s mouth at least give you pause?

Sally: Yeah, but isn’t acknowledging that he has a problem a sign of growth?

Chloe: Like a fungus or a wart?

[ Chuckles ] I’m sorry. I just don’t understand how a woman who has such good taste in clothes has such bad taste in men. Adam is uniquely diabolical. No matter how strong or savvy you think you are, he will find a way to wreck you.

Sally: Doesn’t the fact that I can hold my own against phyllis give you any sort of confidence that I can handle difficult people?

Chloe: Why do you want to be in a relationship with a difficult person? Speaking from experience, being in a healthy relationship is like playing everything on easy mode.

Sally: That just sounds a little boring. No offense.

Chloe: Clearly, you’re not gonna take my advice on this, and I obviously can’t stop you from pursuing him, so let me just leave you with one last word of warning.

Sally: More warnings?

Chloe: His and chelsea’s son, connor — he hasn’t had the easiest life, and that poor little boy still thinks that his parents are in a relationship. It is a very difficult situation. So, whatever connection you think that you might have with adam, it is going to get a lot messier before it gets easier.

Nate: Why give me this check if it’s not for me?

Ashland: Victoria told me that her mother volunteered to help you fund-raise for a new wing at the hospital. Consider this half a wing.

Nate: Wow. Uh… I appreciate your generosity, but, uh… I hope you don’t think I was after anything. I treated you the way I would treat anyone I saw in trouble.

Ashland: No, I don’t doubt that for a second. It still doesn’t change my desire to repay your kindness.

Nate: Well, since you’re determined to give this to me, let me at least fill you in on exactly where this money would be going. I would love to give you a proper pitch on how we would use this new wing and why the hospital needs it.

Ashland: Oh, that’s fine. Uh, but let’s not make it too proper.

Nate: Okay. What do you suggest?

Ashland: Why don’t we discuss it over a meal or drinks? I’ll bring victoria, and i believe she tells me that you’re seeing someone?

Nate: Yes. My girlfriend, elena.

Ashland: Oh, good. Well, let’s bring her, too. And when we’re done with the shop talk, we can talk about anything and everything non-medical.

Nate: [ Chuckles ] I appreciate your sincerity and generosity. Your contribution can help save a lot of lives. Well, uh, on that note, I have got to run, but, uh, we will be in touch.

Ashland: Look forward to it.

Nate: Victoria. Good to see you. I, um, guess we will be seeing more of each other real soon.

Victoria: I look forward to it. You two seem to have really bonded since he helped you out the other day.

Ashland: He is quite an impressive person. And I hope you don’t mind that i included you in dinner plans with nate and his girlfriend.

Victoria: No, of course not. That’s a lovely idea.

Ashland: Are you okay? You seem distracted.

Victoria: Uh…I had a run-in with billy. It just seems that no matter what I say, he’s bound and determined to find something damning in your past. Why give your family just ordinary eggs

Lily: Thank you. The best part is just being able to give jobs to some of the women that I was in prison with, you know? And seeing them turn their lives around like that, I just — I feel really grateful that I’m able to be a part of that.

Elena: Lily, that is so amazing. And I can’t even imagine how difficult that time must have been for you.

Lily: Yeah, it was really, really hard. But the hardest part was just not having my family around. I just missed them so much.

Elena: Yeah, but look at you now. You put all of that behind you, and you fought your way back.

Lily: Yeah. Now my family is pulled together again, you know? And I try to see mattie and charlie as much as I can. And hopefully they’ll come back to genoa city. I mean, a mother can hope.

Elena: [ Laughs ] That would be great.

Lily: Yeah. Now devon and nate have made peace, which is great.

Elena: [ Sighs ] Yeah. I still feel pretty guilty about my part in all of that.

Lily: No. Look, you also played a huge role in bringing them back together again.

Elena: [ Sighs ] That’s kind of you to say, but —

Lily: No. Hey, listen. I’m not just saying that. I am really, really happy that you’re a part of our family.

Elena: [ Chuckles ] Thank you. It’s really nice to know that you feel that way about me.

Lily: [ Chuckles ]

Elena: And now we have a new baby in the family. Well, sort of.

Lily: I know. My god. It’s so weird. It’s like devon’s a dad, but he’s not.

Elena: I know. And is it wrong to say congratulations even though it kind of feels right?

Lily: [ Chuckles ] Yeah. I mean, having gone through the surrogacy thing myself, I just really believe that everything’s gonna work out just fine.

Ashley: Look at you. You are so precious. You’re such a beautiful boy.

Devon: You know, mariah really does deserve all the credit for keeping him safe, with everything she went through.

Nina: Yeah. Mariah, I hope you know how grateful we all are to you.

Ashley: So grateful. And I’m so sorry that you had to endure all that. I still can’t comprehend it, i mean, that the ben rayburn i knew was capable of doing something like that.

Sharon: Well, we were all shocked.

Nina: How did you get through it? I mean, you must have been going crazy.

Mariah: Uh, I was, um… yeah, I was frightened, um, confused. I was really lonely, too.

Ashley: I can’t imagine. Do you have any idea why he held you captive like that?

Mariah: No, I… I mean, I-I didn’t — I —

Tessa: Hey, uh, everybody, i think that mariah could use some fresh air. She might be feeling a little claustrophobic after being locked away for so long.

Abby: That’s a great idea, tessa.

Mariah: Thanks. Okay.

Devon: See ya.

Nina: It takes an incredible amount of courage to go through an ordeal like that.

Ashley: I know. She’s a very strong woman. I have a lot of respect for how she’s handling all this.

Sharon: Well, I’m really proud of her. But we can’t disregard the severity of what she’s been through.

Billy: The more I questioned victoria, the more upset she got, until she stormed out.

Nick: Billy, you know my sister. She does not like to be challenged.

Billy: I think she’s more worried about ashland than she wants to admit. And I do know her. When she gets defensive like that, it’s usually because she’s concerned.

Nick: Or maybe she’s just annoyed at your inability to let her live her own life.

Billy: Nick, think about it for a second. She had no answer to how ashland got the money to buy those two news organizations. It was his first deal in a very young career, okay? And it was a lot of money.

Nick: Maybe his mentor privately financed the whole investment to breathe life into her dead husband’s holdings. It could be something as simple as that.

Billy: Yeah, like a favor, off the books, on her deathbed. Sounds super simple.

Nick: I don’t want to argue about this with you, alright? Now, I will say this. I’d be a lot more inclined to go down this path with you if you had something more than suspicions, but you got nothing except this deep desire to find something damning about this man that my sister’s currently with.

Billy: Hold on a second. I have said this before, and I’ll say it again. This is not about jealousy or possessiveness. This is about protecting my children.

Nick: And victoria — because you think she needs your protection.

Billy: Victoria can take on ashland locke with two hands tied behind her back any given day, as long as she has the facts.

Nick: How do you know she doesn’t already?

Billy: [ Sighs ] Look, maybe she’s not asking these big questions because of this colossal merger that’s on her mind. Or maybe it’s because of her fiancé’s fatal illness. Either way, it’s possible, isn’t it? Tell me I’m wrong.

Victor: You’re always wrong, billy boy. Besides, this is none of your business.

Sally: Well, surprise, surprise. We meet again.

Adam: I was, uh — I was just meeting with a huge advertiser. Hope you don’t think that I’m stalking you.

Sally: Didn’t even occur to me. I just came in here to change in the gym ’cause it’s a lot closer than going all the way home. Plus, I will take any opportunity to tick phyllis off. She just has to deal with my presence. You know, if you have a minute, there’s something that I would like to address.

Adam: Alright. Is there an issue at the office?

Sally: Well, in a way, it is about work because this job is very important to me and I want to get this right.

Adam: Okay.

Sally: I’ve been thinking that I might like to hit the reset button on where things stand between us. I think we should go back to the way things were before that kiss.

Billy: Of course you’re gonna try and discredit me, but i think, on this one, we’re on the same page.

Victor: Oh, yeah? I doubt that.

Billy: Of course you would.

Victor: By the way, billy boy, I hear from one of my newman media employees that you were sneaking around my private suite at the grand phoenix last night. Don’t do it again, alright?

Billy: You think about what i said.

Nick: You didn’t want billy to know that I was the one who told you about the break-in.

Victor: No. No…because I need information from his sources. I don’t want to cut that off, okay?

Nick: Billy may not seem trustworthy, dad, but I know he’ll do everything he can to prevent ashland from hurting victoria. We all will.

Victor: [ Breathes deeply ] Hope so.

Nick: Well, so far, he seems very open to keeping me in the loop.

Victor: [ Sighs ] Okay. Good. You know, I can’t stand that guy. And I am dying to blow his damn company out of the water. But we cannot afford to lose access to the information that he will give us about ashland locke.

Nick: So far, his investigators haven’t turned up anything that yours didn’T. Everyone wants to know how ashland came into this sudden windfall that put him in the game in the first place, but nobody knows the answer to that mystery yet.

Victor: So, he hasn’t told you anything new? Hmm. Alright. Then I will wait to destroy his company until I find out what i want to know about ashland locke.

Ashland: You know, I really want to see this new surgical wing that dr. Hastings wants to finance come to fruition.

Victoria: You know, it’s really very generous of you. I’m sure your donation is gonna be much appreciated. Memorial hospital has helped so many people in my family.

Ashland: I can imagine. I’ve been very impressed with the treatment I’ve received so far, and I just really would like to give back.

Victoria: I just wish everyone could see this side of you.

Ashland: Well, I don’t care what others think. I only care about what you see in me.

Victoria: I know, but if billy knew about this, he might — he might think of you differently. You know, he still hasn’t called off those reporters. Just today, he was questioning me about how you bought those new stations to start your career.

Ashland: Well, I already told you about that.

Victoria: Yes, but is there anything from that time that you haven’t told me, something that maybe billy might dig up and try to use against you?

Tessa: I don’t want to pressure you, but you were just so quiet in the car.

Mariah: This is so much harder than I thought it would be. I feel conflicted about everything. And I cannot fight this fear that I feel in the pit of my stomach.

Tessa: But you and dominic are safe now. Try to hold on to that.

Mariah: I know. I just… tessa, I can’t seem to let go. This was supposed to be easy. I was supposed to be an incubator, a carrier, and it was gonna be simple to just walk away.

Tessa: But after everything that’s happened, of course it’s not.

Sally: She made me aware of the potentially precarious position you’re in with your ex because of your son, and I just would not want to do anything to hurt your little boy.

Adam: Mm-hmm. Connor always comes first with me. There’s no question about that. And that was a big part of why i put the brakes on anything that was happening between us. When I said it would be a big mistake, I was thinking about my son and, you know, how that could affect him.

Sally: I had a feeling that you might say that. So, I think the safest and most uncomplicated path would be my reset-button idea.

Adam: Well, I can’t disagree with you about that. So I guess that means that, uh, the dinner invitation is off the table.

Sally: Well, I mean, not necessarily. We could always make it a working dinner. Nothing wrong with that, right?

Adam: Um… right. Mm-hmm.

[ Cellphone ringing ] Mm-hmm. Oh, I’m sorry. I got to take this. It’s chelsea.

[ Clears throat ]

Sally: Yeah, of —

Adam: Hello?

Sally: Of course.

[ Sighs ]

Victor: Are you with me on this?

Nick: Playing the double agent, finding out everything billy knows, and reporting back to you?

Victor: Mm-hmm.

Nick: I’m in.

Victor: You know how important it is to find out everything about ashland locke. There’s something about him i don’t trust. And I want to get all that information that’s pertinent before he marries your sister, before the wedding, if there is a wedding.

Victoria: You can be completely honest with me.

Ashland: I don’t doubt that.

Victoria: I grew up the daughter of victor newman. There’s nothing that you can say that’s gonna shock me. I hope you know you can trust me with anything.

Ashland: And I do. I trust you with my life.

Phyllis: The launch, uh, presentation is going to start soon. I’ll have to get ready for it. Excuse me.

Nick: Alright, spill it. What happened?

Adam: [ Breathing heavily ] Where did that come from?

Sally: I mean, do we really need to question it? Why don’t we just follow our impulse and see where it leads?

Adam: [ Sighs ]

Abby: Tessa, hey, um, do you have a minute to talk?

Tessa: Yeah. Is something wrong?

Abby: It’s mariah. What she went through is awful. Who knows what this whole ordeal may have done to her?

Mariah: Please…somebody… help. Let us out. Let — let — let us out! My baby needs to live!

Elena: Hello.

Nate: Hey, you made it back.

Elena: Yeah, fortunately, my patient stabilized, and I’m so relieved for her — and for me. Not to be shallow, but this dress deserved to be worn more than a few minutes.

Nate: Well, I will help you make up for lost party time. I promise.

Lily: So, are you really gonna let nick stop you from getting this scoop before the speeches?

Billy: Right now, I think we need a new strategy, starting with you and me launching ourselves out of this dud of a party.

Lily: [ Chuckles ]

Adam: This would be a massively bad idea.

Sally: Massively bad or enticingly good?

Adam: [ Sighs, chuckles ] Um…both. And, unfortunately, the bad outweighs the good.

Sally: Why, because, technically you’re my boss?

Adam: Um, that’s another excellent reason that I think we need to, um, slam on the brakes.

Sally: Another reason? Okay, so now you have, like, a whole list of reasons not to kiss me?

Adam: No, it’s just one that, uh, overshadows everything else.

Sally: And what could that possibly be?

Adam: I am toxic.

Phyllis: Yeah the ballroom is ready now, so, uh, tell the waitstaff to be ready with the champagne for the toast. Um… no, uh, well, then make sure — make sure we have enough. No delays, please.

Victor: Phyllis.

Phyllis: Oh. Hello.

Victor: Your little display with that spectra woman was something.

Phyllis: She threw a drink in my face.

Victor: Kindly refrain from any further antics, alright?

Phyllis: Victor, I can’t be responsible for who your — your son, adam, decides to escort here on his arm. I mean, that girl is trouble. I provide the venue and the food, but the rest is you.

Sally: Well, that was the most original rejection I’ve ever heard. Don’t you think you might be exaggerating a little bit?

Sally: Uh, yeah, it’s not me, it’s you. I get it. It’s a damn shame, though, ’cause I feel like it would’ve been pretty spectacular.

Adam: Well, at least this way it can stay spectacular, locked away in our imaginations. Do we agree?

Victor: Tonight is about newman media, alright? So don’t make me regret spending all this money to hold this event at your hotel.

Phyllis: Okay, well, you should regret hiring sally spectra at your company. I mean, here she is, representing your company, and she threw a drink in my face.

Victor: I enjoyed the spectacle, by the way. Didn’t you dump ice water all over her?

Phyllis: Yeah. Well, yeah.

Victor: Let me deal with her, okay?

Phyllis: Okay, you deal with her. And while you’re at it, you should deal with adam. He should get better dates. But, if you ask me, he and sally spectra are a match made in hell.

Jack: A word of warning — sally and phyllis should be kept as far apart as possible for the remainder of the evening, maybe for the remainder of their lives.

Nick: Makes sense. I’m no fan of sally’s either.

Jack: Well, I understand that. I can’t defend her myself.

Sally: I should go outside and get some fresh air before your big speech. Okay.

Nick: Still trying to make sense of that pairing.

Jack: I’m not questioning it. To each his…or her own.

Nikki: Well, congratulations, nate.

Nate: Thank you.

Elena: He is gonna be an incredible chief of surgery. He’s already a brilliant surgeon, so he knows exactly what the department needs, and he’s got all these great ideas, like expanding the hospital’s surgical wing.

Nikki: Oh, I think that’s a wonderful idea. I mean, memorial’s surgical team is top-notch. I still have my granddaughter because of them. I will be forever grateful.

Elena: Right. And just think about all the extra lives we’ll be able to save with the expansion.

Nikki: Well, you sound very proud of him.

Elena: I couldn’t be more proud. I could go another hour talking about all of his accomplishments.

Nate: Okay, okay.

[ Chuckles ] Enough about me. I-I am not the only one making impressive career moves.

Nikki: Oh, is that right?

Nate: Yes, elena here is about to be the new face of askmdnow.

Nikki: Really?

Victor: Well, now, I’m very sorry to hear that.

Nikki: Oh, now, victor, why on earth would you say such a thing?

Victor: Well, because adam was just about to offer elena a very good position as chief medical journalist for newman media.

Elena: What?

Victor: If your contract with chanccomm is now untied, you can always jump ship, you know, and join a far more successful media company.

Elena: [ Exhales sharply ]

Abby: She told you about the nightmare that she had? She was held against her will for so long, I can’t help but worry that she’s gonna have lasting emotional scars.

Tessa: Look, I’m concerned, too, but I know how strong mariah is. She is resilient enough to get through this. We’re just gonna have to do everything we can to be there for her and show her nothing but support and love.

Abby: I can’t stop thinking about what mariah went through. She was locked up in a tiny room, no one to talk to, she didn’t know if anyone was coming for her, and she was desperate to protect little dominic, who was growing inside of her. Has she opened up to you about any of this?

Tessa: I’m sure that she’s still processing. I’m gonna talk to sharon about some treatment for her, but I’m hoping that all she really needs is some time.

Abby: [ Sighs ]

[ Footsteps approaching ]

Dana: Mariah?

Mariah: Hi.

Dana: Little dominic needs feeding.

Mariah: Oh, yeah. Um, I just pumped my milk into a bottle. But would it be okay if — if i fed him?

Billy: I found nothing. No secret, no surprise about what they’re planning on launch tonight, which means there’s nothing going on, and this is all smoke and mirrors. Either way [Sighs] What are we doing wasting our time? Let’s get the hell out of here.

Lily: Okay, is it possible maybe you heard all the positive buzz going around and you got bummed out?

[ Chuckles ] Come on. What do you expect? We’re at a party filled with people singing newman media’s praises. Doesn’t mean that we can’t try to outmaneuver them still.

Billy: I know, but it’s nauseating, watching them congratulate each other over and over. Let’s go have dinner at society.

Lily: Oh, my — no, that is petty.

Billy: What’s worse, I die of boredom, watching them pat each other on the back over and over and over?

Lily: Well, if you die of boredom, then you can’t indulge in what I have planned later.

Billy: Consider me very much alive.

Victor: Well, now, in case you haven’t made a definite commitment to chanccomm, newman media is open to offering you a very lucrative contract, you know.

Elena: [ Exhales sharply ] Wow. I am so flattered, but I’ve already accepted chanccomm’s offer.

Victor: Well, have you signed the contract?

Elena: No, but I gave them my word, and I won’t go back on that.

Victor: I see, I see, I see. Well, sorry to hear that, but i admire your loyalty.

Nikki: Congratulations again. Enjoy the rest of your evening.

Victor: Oh, nice to see you.

Nate: Wow. I am more impressed with you than ever. Not only did you walk away from a boatload of money, but you turned victor newman down flat.

Elena: [ Chuckles ]

Nate: Not many people have the guts to do that.

Elena: Well, I wasn’t gonna abandon lily and sign with her competitor. What kind of person would do that?

Nate: Definitely not your kind.

[ Both chuckle ]

Elena: I will say it feels really good to be wanted.

Nate: Mm. And I will say media companies aren’t the only ones who want you.

Elena: Ah.

Victor: Son.

Adam: Dad. Well, looks like a banner night for newman media.

Victor: Well, I don’t entirely agree. What your girlfriend, or your date for the night, displayed earlier was not good. It almost ruined tonight’s festivities, you know.

Adam: You have nothing to worry about. It’s all under control. Media companies, they thrive on headlines, even when they occasionally create a couple scandalous ones of their own.

Victor: I prefer headlines that point out the successful debut of tonight’s opening of the newman media company, okay?

Adam: I promise you that we will come out of this like champions. We ready to get things rolling?

Victor: This is your night, you know.

Adam: [ Clears throat ] Good evening, everyone. Thanks for coming. If you will join me in the ballroom for the main event, the rise of the next generation of media companies. Nope

Lily: Okay, look, i understand if you want to skip this part, alright, so I will go represent for us, okay? And, plus, I want to see everyone’s reaction.

Billy: Have at it. Better you than me.

[ Sighs ] Hi. Can I get a, uh — make it a double, please — scotch.

[ Clears throat ]

Phyllis: Hey, did they complete sound check? Okay, that’s good to know. Uh, okay, thanks. Hey, baby, you want a drink?

Nick: Hey. No.

Phyllis: Ooh.

Nick: I want to know what happened. Now, jack had your back and didn’t say much more than you and sally were just butting heads.

Phyllis: I mean, I may have exacerbated the situation by, uh, telling her that she was not welcome at the party and that she should leave and keep on going until [Clears throat] She’s out of town.

Nick: Really? Then what?

Phyllis: Uh, I believe that got her angry.

Nick: You think?

Phyllis: Uh, and then, um, may have provoked her to throw a drink in my face, and that may have then caused me to take the ice bucket and pour it over her head. I deeply regret my actions.

Nick: Do you?

Phyllis: No, I don’T. I-I really don’T. I don’T. It was awesome seeing her as a waterlogged mess. It was great.

Nick: Okay. Uh, where did jack come in?

Phyllis: Well, she kept coming at me, and I’m not just gonna stand back and do nothing. So I lunged at her and jack pulled me back and then adam reined her in.

Nick: Listen, I really get your animosity toward her, alright? It’s tough to forget everything she did to our daughter, but you have got to let it go and move forward, because, I’m telling you, sally isn’t going anywhere.

Phyllis: Oh, no. Do you think that’s true?

Nick: She seems very determined to make her mark here. Now, I’m as angry as you are about what she’s done to summer, okay, but it doesn’t do anyone any good for you to kick the hornet’s nest every time the two of you are around each other.

Phyllis: Okay, you make a good point. Well, look at that over there. That’s — that’s a sad sight.

Nick: Since my dad asked me to keep an eye on him, I guess that’s my cue.

Phyllis: Hey, um, I’m sorry if I embarrassed you. And you’re right. You’re right. I’ll just move on from here.

Nick: It’s alright. Just try and stay dry the rest of the night.

Phyllis: [ Sighs ] I will. Ugh, wait a second. No, that’s the wrong one. No, no, no, no.

Nick: [ Sighs ] What are you doing out here, billy? Newman media’s about to take off, and, uh, I thought you were willing to spy to figure out what their game plan was.

Billy: Well, I was, but now that it’s all out in the open, it’s a bit of a bore, isn’t it? And, really, I don’t want to hear adam blah-blah-blah about how tremendous newman media’s gonna be. I’d rather sit here by myself.

[ Applause ]

Victor: Good evening. Welcome, everyone, and thank you for coming. I’m very proud to announce the launch of a new enterprise, a new venture, but I’m even prouder to announce that I will be partnering in this venture with my son, adam. We are starting a whole new enterprise, one you will all hear about, I promise you. Without further ado, let me introduce to you the ceo of newman media, my son, adam newman.

[ Applause ]

Adam: Thanks, dad.

[ Sighs ] And thank you all for, uh, coming out to support the most innovative, dynamic, new media company. Now, I bet you’re all wondering what it is about newman media that makes it destined for such phenomenal success, and the answer is power. The power and strength of family, something my father’s been trying to teach me for years. Well, dad, it, uh — it’s finally sunken in. This company was born out of family, it was named for family, and soon we’ll be working with family, doing charitable work with my brother nicholas’ new hope organization, and one day, I hope to bring my own son into the business, just like my father has done with me. But I know I am getting ahead of myself, uh, already thinking about the next generations, and I should be focused on our launch, but we have a lot of new and exciting outlets and platforms in store. So brace yourselves, world, because newman media is coming out swinging.

Elena: Speaking of missing, aren’t devon and amanda supposed to be here?

Lily: Uh, they decided to stay in ’cause amanda’s leaving early tomorrow to go on a trip with her mom and sister.

Elena: Aww, she must be so excited to be getting so much closer with them. And he must be so worn out from spending so much time at the hospital. Ah, he’s been so heroic in chance’s absence. He’s been going above and beyond to save mariah and then help bring baby dominic into the world.

Lily: I know.

Elena: [ Sighs ] Oh, excuse me. I am being summoned.

Lily: Okay.

Elena: [ Chuckles ]

Lily: Bye.

Elena: Bye.

Billy: So, what’d I miss? Anything exciting?

Lily: Well, neither victor nor adam made any mention of their competition’s name, including chanccomm.

Billy: Of course not. They’re not gonna give us the free press. But that does not mean that they’re gonna play fairly.

Lily: No, and there were no shots fired, but adam made it very clear that he’s planning on expanding from locke’s original company by procuring more talent and outlets.

Billy: Why am I not surprised?

Lily: Yeah, and he didn’t specify any targets, but I swear he glanced my way.

Billy: Well, let him come after us. We’ll do everything we can to protect our assets.

Lily: And, I don’t know, i might’ve misread victor’s reaction, but it seemed like he didn’t seem very pleased when adam mentioned adding on more entities.

Billy: Well, now, that is exciting, because victor would not give up an opportunity to come and take a shot at chanccomm, which means, if I’m correct, they’re not on the same page.

Phyllis: [ Sighs ] Okay, honestly, what did you think?

Jack: Well, I’m never going to sing victor newman’s praises, but I’m happy for adam. I want to see him turn his life around. I want to see him put all the anger and resentment in the past. You know what else I think?

Phyllis: I asked you, didn’t I?

Jack: I think the venue was spectacular, I think the food was amazing, and I think all of your hard work really showed.

Phyllis: Thank you. Thank you very much. Ah, I just hope that newman media feels the same. I-I hope that all of that overshadows, you know, that little dustup earlier. By the way, thank you. Thank you for controlling me so it didn’t, you know, go any further.

Jack: Well, I just wanted to spare the loss of any more valuable champagne.

Phyllis: [ Laughs ] Yeah, but it would’ve been worth it to see sally drenched. It would’ve been worth every dime.

Victor: And you do?

Billy: Oh, yeah.

Victor: Oh.

Billy: Oh, and just so we’re clear, whatever you have planned for chanccomm, we’ll be ready.

Victor: Good.

Adam: Uh-huh. You a little paranoid?

Billy: No, no, not at all. But I don’t trust him. Oh, and I would check with, uh — with phyllis, as well. If you plan on having your going-out-of-business party here, as well, it’ll probably be around the holidays, so you might want to check and see. Usually gets booked up.

Victor: Billy boy… you always have been and always will be a pain in the ass, okay?

Billy: Thank you.

Lily: Okay, what did I miss?

Billy: Nothing. I simply came over here to congratulate the competition, and it turned into a posturing event.

Billy: Can we stop talking about newman media? I think you’ll be happy to see that I didn’t die of boredom, so I am ready to start that after party.

Lily: Well, victoria opted out of the party and stayed home with the kids, so no need for us to rush back home. And, uh, I don’t know. I felt sentimental being back here.

Nate: I know. Tell me about it. I am so stoked to have the fundraising goddess on my side.

Elena: [ Chuckles ] I think we’re on a lucky streak. Maybe we shouldn’t jinx it.

Nate: Ooh, ooh, I don’t — i don’t think we could. Some things are ironclad. Unjinxable.

Elena: I don’t think that’s a word.

Nate: Maybe not, but it’s a fact.

Phyllis: [ Sighs ] Okay. I mean, you’re not gonna judge me for that?

Nick: Like I said, no harm, no foul.

Phyllis: Okay. Thanks. So, are you still gonna pamper me?

Nick: Mm. Yeah, I mean, you’re gonna have to lose the headset first, for sure.

Phyllis: [ Chuckles ] Really?

Nikki: Well, congratulations, darling. Your launch was a smashing success.

Victor: Yeah, I think so, toO. But, you know, I’m still troubled by adam flirting with that woman, whatever her name is.

Nikki: Yeah, sally spectra.

Victor: Oh, okay.

Nikki: I don’t disagree with you. I’m troubled by that woman period. After what she did to summer, she has proven that she can’t be trusted.

Victor: Huh.

Nikki: We’re gonna have to keep an eye on her very carefully.

Victor: Oh, yeah. But you know, I can admit I-i kind of enjoyed phyllis taking that bucket of ice water and pouring it all over her head.

Nikki: I liked that, too.

Victor: You did?

Adam: Did he say anything to you?

Sally: Mnh-mnh. He didn’t have to. That man has a death glare that could flatten a whole town.

Adam: Listen, um, don’t worry about my dad. He has bigger fish to flatten. Trust me. More importantly, though, how do you think the speeches went over?

Sally: You’re a born leader. Proved yourself to be quite the visionary, and I wasn’t the only one impressed with everything you have to offer. Well, it is getting late. I better get home. In case you were wondering, the answer is yes.

Adam: Hmm?

Sally: Despite your warning, there is a good chance that i will be dreaming of spectacular things tonight about what might’ve been.

Tessa: Aww, mariah, you’re awake. I’m sorry. I wanted to be here when you woke up.

Mariah: Oh, that’s okay. I was just feeding the baby. Um, I’m sorry, abby. It’s just he wa– he was hungry, so…

Abby: No, no, that’s okay. Um, if he needed to be fed, yeah. Um, you know what? Uh, I’m sure he’s not finished yet. Can I take over?

Mariah: Um, he is. Sorry. [ Chuckles ]

Abby: Oh.

Tessa: Well, hey, uh, i finished the lullaby, and, judging by abby’s reaction, she seems like a big fan.

Abby: He probably needs to be burped. I can do it. Yeah?

Mariah: Yeah.

Abby: Thanks. Oh, dominic. Hi. Mommy’s here. Hi, my love. Oh, you are so perfect. My little dominic. I love you so much. Hi, my precious boy.

Sally: Mm. Well, now that we’re here, the party has officially started.

Adam: Mm. Well, we definitely captured everyone’s attention.

Sally: Yeah, some more than others. I think it’s time we go greet the coordinator of this fine event.

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Alright, lead the way, miss. Hello, phyllis. Place looks great. Just wanted to thank you for handling the festivities. It’s gonna be a big night for newman media.

Phyllis: Big night for me. Lots of publicity for my hotel. And thank you, by the way, for the huge mound of cash you gave me to throw this party.

Jack: Congratulations on this new venture. I wish you lots of success with it.

Adam: Mm, thank you, jack.

Jack: Evening, sally.

Sally: Jack.

Phyllis: You know, I don’t know if success is in the cards for this coupling. I’m pretty sure — now I was just telling jack that the two of you are probably gonna destroy each other, so have a good time while it lasts.

Adam: We will. Thanks.

Jack: Was that really necessary?

Phyllis: Yes, it was. Yes.

Nikki: Whose buttons is adam trying to push by bringing sally tonight?

Victor: I had no idea he was bringing anyone, and I don’t think I would have approved.

Nikki: Well, I have to tell you about some people who will not be attending.

Victor: Who?

Nikki: That’s why victoria called earlier. They’re not coming.

Victor: Oh.

Nikki: Ashland is having a rough time coming off his second round of chemo.

Victor: I’m sorry to hear that.

Adam: Good evening, dad.

Victor: Son.

Adam: Dad, um, this is sally spectra. Sally, this is my father.

Victor: How do you do?

Sally: Hello, sir.

Victor: My wife, nikki.

Nikki: We’ve met.

Sally: Hi, nikki.

Adam: Well, I’m sorry to hear about ashland.

Victor: Yeah, so am I.

Sally: Well, this is gonna be a wonderful evening. I’m so pleased to be here as part of the newman media team.

Nikki: I’ll bet you are.

Adam: It’s gonna be an extraordinary night.

Victor: I certainly hope so. Nice meeting you.

Sally: You as well.

[ Knock on door ]

Devon: Hey.

Amanda: Hey.

Devon: Ready to go?

Amanda: Oh, god. I’m sorry. I completely forgot about the party.

Devon: You forgot? What’s wrong?

Amanda: [ Sighs ] I just got off the phone with michael baldwin, and he is reinstating the charges against sutton. So a court date is being set for my grandfather’s murder trial.

Devon: That’s a good thing, right?

Amanda: Yeah, it is. I hoped that it would happen, but michael wasn’t 100% sure, and now that it’s happening, I — I think I just can’t believe that it’s happening. My grandfather is finally gonna face a jury for the murder of my father.

Devon: Well, hopefully your dad will get the justice that he deserves to get.

Amanda: Oh, my god, I am so grateful. And not just for this. Me and naya, our relationship is getting so much better.

Devon: Yeah?

Amanda: Yeah, and we’re actually going on a short trip with imani — a family bonding thing.

Devon: Get out of here. That’s amazing.

Amanda: Yeah, now with the trial on the horizon, I just — I feel like this long, painful journey has finally come to an end.

Devon: And now a new amazing journey is beginning for you.

Amanda: Yeah. You know, we’ve had a lot of life-altering changes lately, huh? You just brought a new life into this world.

Devon: Yeah, that’s right. That’s — I’m still wrapping my mind around that. I, um — I know one thing — dominic is just the cutest baby I’ve ever seen in my life, and i have some new pictures to show you. Look.

Amanda: Devon, he is absolutely adorable.

Devon: I know, I know. He really, really is.

[ Chuckles ]

Billy: And the award for the most obnoxious entrance goes to adam and sally.

Jack: You don’t have to worry about them. There won’t be any trouble as long as everyone is on their best behavior.

Billy: Are you talking about me?

Phyllis: You mean me?

Jack: Yes and yes.

Sally: I’m disappointed that victoria and ashland won’t be here. I was hoping to find a moment to persuade victoria to let me design her wedding dress.

Adam: Mm. I wouldn’t hold your breath on that. Victoria is not gonna forget what you did to summer, and my sister holds a grudge better than anyone else in the family, even dear old dad.

Sally: You underestimate me.

Adam: Do I? And yet, don’t you work for me?

Sally: I work for newman fashion, and a wedding dress is fashion. But tonight is not about victoria or her dress.

Adam: Mm-hmm, yeah, I’m actually happy that she’s not coming, given her distaste for me. I have enough on my plate already, so things will be a little less precarious without her around. Your heart is at the heart of everything you do.

Lily: [ Laughs ]

Nate: Former host. I decided it was time to go now that I am chief of surgery at memorial.

Lily: Yep. Actually, victor unknowingly invited our new star of askmdnow, who had to run out to check on a patient, elena.

Nick: Oh, she is perfect. She will be great at that.

Lily: I know, that’s what i told her.

Nate: Uh-huh, alright. I see, I get it. I’m already yesterday’s news.

Lily: Yeah, of course. I mean, in the media world moves fast. What can I tell you?

Nate: Yeah, well, hopefully, elena makes it back in time to celebrate with us tonight. Thank you, victor, for the champagne.

Lily: Yeah, thank you, newman media.

[ Laughter ]

Adam: I am not the least bit worried about chanccomm or billy. Yeah, he may think he’s a threat, but believe me, I can handle anything he throws my way.

Sally: You know, I have to admit, I am a little bit curious about the ongoing feud between you two.

Adam: Do you really not know?

Sally: Well, I read the hit job that chanccomm did on you, so, yeah, I know a little bit about the death of billy and chloe’s daughter.

Adam: It, um — it was a devastating, horrible accident. And I handled it terribly.

Sally: How are you and chloe even able to be in the same building?

Adam: Well, she’ll never fully trust me, but eventually, she was able to let go of her hatred.

Sally: But billy’s another story.

Adam: He can’T. Even when he acts like he’s alright around me, deep down, he’s still filled with pain and anger. And he always will be.

Sally: Well, I’m sorry — for everyone involved.

Adam: Anyway, maybe I’ll tell you more about it sometime. But that’s a story for another day. Tonight, we are here to have some fun.

Sally: Well, it is a good thing that I excel at having fun.

Victor: You know, I have a feeling that victoria never intended to show up anyway, whether or not ashland felt poorly.

Nikki: You mean because victoria’s upset with you for investigating her fiancé’s past?

Victor: No, because victoria and adam have this contentious relationship. Still do. Tonight would have been an occasion for them to, you know, settle their differences and put down their swords.

Nikki: I understand that you will never stop wanting that, but I’m not altogether sure that adam is interested in making up or that victoria wants to play nice at all, and I can’t blame her, really.

Victor: Yeah, but, sweetheart, you can’t blame em for hoping and trying, okay?

Nikki: Well, at least you can breathe easy that they’re not gonna create any conflict tonight.

Victor: I just have the strange feeling there will be some fireworks tonight. Billy boy abbott would love nothing more than to blow this launch right out of the water. Not touching is still touching protection.

Devon: [ Chuckles ]

Amanda: Oh, my gosh.

Devon: I have no idea how babies sleep like this, swaddled up so tight, but he loves it. He just —

Amanda: He really is the most beautiful baby.

Devon: I know. I know.

Amanda: But I’m sure that you have a lot of emotions swirling through you right now. Everything that you’ve gone through with mariah and abby and the baby, it must be really overwhelming.

Devon: You know, I’m just happy for abby and chance, and I’m happy that everything turned out the way it was supposed to.

Amanda: Yeah, but it’s okay to admit that it’s a little more complicated than that.

Devon: I mean… we need to get to this party if we’re gonna go.

Amanda: Hey, devon, the party can wait. I admire you trying to make the best of this, but I can tell that something is weighing on you. Will you talk to me about it?

Jack: Well, looks like a very successful launch, victor. Congratulations.

Victor: Thank you, jack.

Jack: And of course, we have something more important to raise a glass to — I am a great-uncle and you are a grandfather again.

Victor: You bet. The birth of abby’s baby is worth celebrating, isn’t it?

Jack: And thank god they found mariah in time.

Nikki: Mm.

Victor: What an ordeal that was. Having said that, I must say, i wish they’d find stitch rayburn and bring him to justice, you know? But I will not let that shadow spoil our party.

Jack: Well, I can’t wait to see newman media’s presentation. I’m sure you and adam have something up your sleeve to wow the media world.

Victor: Oh, you know we do, right? If you’ll excuse me, I have to see something in the ballroom.

Nikki: Alright, darling.

Jack: Well, victor is brimming with his usual confidence.

Nikki: Oh, he’s very proud of his accomplishments. I’m sure it will go very well. That is, if billy doesn’t have anything up his sleeve.

Jack: As far as I know, there is nothing to worry about.

Nikki: As far as you know?

Jack: Here’s hoping it’s a perfectly uneventful event.

Adam: Chloe said she can’t make it. Miles came down with a light fever, and she can’t leave him.

Sally: Aww, well, I hope he feels better.

[ Sighs ] Okay, well, it’s a shame that chloe’s gonna miss this incredible party, but I will schmooze enough for the both of us, on behalf of the company. And maybe try some appetizers. Do you want anything?

Adam: You know, I’m good right now. Thank you.

Sally: Okay, well, I’m gonna try them all, and then I’ll report back which ones are the best.

Adam: Looking forward to it.

Sally: I’m really liking this job so far.

Billy: Well…

[ Clears throat ] Thanks for the invite.

Adam: Yeah.

Billy: It was a benevolent gesture.

Adam: Well, what can I say, billy, I’m a very generous guy.

Billy: Are you?

Adam: Why else would I invite you?

Billy: I’m not actually sure yet, but I am interested to find out what you got up your sleeve.

Adam: Well, you’re gonna have to wait, like everyone else.

Billy: Well, that’s good. I’m a patient man.

Adam: Hmm. I know that you would love to undermine the launch and steal my thunder somehow, but that’s not gonna happen. So I have a headline for you — “newman media launch sets records and leaves chanccomm in the dust.”

Billy: I hope someone else is writing your headlines because i would throw that one in the wood chipper.

Adam: [ Laughs ]

Billy: Look, just so you know, we’re not gonna let our guard down.

Adam: I mean, we called a truce, right? So this is just straight-up fair competition. May the best man win.

Billy: Yeah, adam, look, if i actually believed that you were gonna honor that truce, that would be one thing, but I know for a fact that your dad is gonna come after us with some sort of underhanded attack because that’s really the only way newman media — a start-up like newman media — could do any damage to chanccomm.

Adam: A start-up? Hmm, I mean, you must’ve forgotten that newman media did start as cyaxares and it has all its history and strength intact.

Billy: Yeah, cyaxares was built by ashland locke, who, i have to admit, is a legend, and unfortunately, you’re never gonna be able to live up to that standard. Which is not good for newman media, unless, of course, you have papa bear run the show from behind the scenes. Then, you know, maybe there’s a chance, but we know how that goes. Damned if you do, damned if you don’T.

Adam: I think that’s called projecting your own insecurities.

Billy: Hmm.

Adam: And if we did make a run for chanccomm, you would never see it coming. But help yourself to some champagne, alright?

Lily: I could see the gauntlet being thrown from over there. What’s the score now?

Billy: I would say it’s a tie game.

 

Adam: Jack. Hey, I, uh — I just wanted to thank you for the gracious congratulations earlier.

Jack: My congratulations were sincere. I’m genuinely impressed with everything you’ve accomplished, not just with this venture, but with your personal turnaround. I can’t help but question your choice of a date for the evening.

Adam: You’re not the only one that’s wondering about that.

Billy: I still can’t get a read on adam. I don’t know if he’s playing it straight or if he’s still planning to come after chanccomm.

Lily: Well, maybe his plan is to keep you guessing.

Billy: Hmm. He’s accomplished that.

Lily: Look, just hope for the best and prepare for the worst.

Billy: Yeah. Whatever adam has planned, that’s a whole other thing. Victor is not gonna give up an opportunity to put me in my place.

Lily: Look, I think it’s a good thing that maybe father and son aren’t on the same page. Cause some friction at newman media, give us an edge.

Billy: Look at you, always looking for the strategy, right? Yeah, I would love to know the details. I would love to know what they’re coming to market with.

Lily: Well, we can wait for the speeches to know what they’re gonna come to market with, so…

Billy: Yeah, that’s not as much fun, is it?

Lily: [ Chuckles ]

Billy: You know what? I’m gonna snoop around a little bit. Find out what shiny new toy they have coming. Maybe even scoop the story before they’re able to launch.

Lily: Okay, I wouldn’t mind having the edge, too, but what do you plan on doing exactly?

Billy: You leave that to me.

Phyllis: I don’t like the look of that.

Nick: It looks like he’s just getting on an elevator.

Phyllis: He’s not just getting on an elevator, i promise you. He and adam looked like there was something venomous going on.

Nick: How was that different from every other day?

Phyllis: Yeah, I know, except I feel that billy is gonna do something to disrupt this party. It’s gonna make me really upset. Earlier, when I asked why he’s so eager to come to this party, he couldn’t give me a straight answer.

Nick: You know, it’s not often you and my dad are on the same page about anything, but he said the same thing to me and asked me to keep and eye on him, but I really, really don’t think billy’s here to cause trouble.

Phyllis: I’m not too sure. I don’t want adam and billy to get into it. I really don’T.

Nick: I’m not gonna let that happen.

Phyllis: You won’t?

Nick: Nope. I’m here to protect you and your hotel.

Phyllis: Really? You’re my hero. You’re my hero. Oh!

Nick: Yeah, it’s okay.

Phyllis: [ Laughs ] Alright, I’m gonna report to you later.

Nick: Yeah, you are. I’m just gonna go check on billy and just make sure he’s, you know, cool.

Phyllis: Okay.

[ Sighs ] Oh, well, you know, look at you. You’re like a monster from a horror film that shows up when you don’t want it.

Sally: You and nick seemed cozy.

Phyllis: Yeah, we are. Are you disappointed? Because I told you, our relationship was stronger than all of your weak attempts to undermine us.

Sally: What I find interesting is that you were with jack yet again when adam and I walked in. I mean, at some point, nick’s not gonna be able to ignore it either.

Phyllis: You know, you are a sad little girl. You don’t know anything about me or nick or our relationship. You aren’t capable of understanding. You left la. You couldn’t take it. You left there with your tail between your legs, sally. You alienated the only person who cared about you — jack. And then you could’ve learned so much from the genius that is lauren fenmore. She could’ve mentored you, but then you alienated her, didn’t you? I mean, what’s it gonna be now? It’s over for you. Over. Even though you tell yourself, “oh, this time it’s gonna work out,” it’s not. It’s not gonna work out. You’re gonna be alone and lonely and cold and sad. ‘Cause that’s who you are.

Devon: You know, it’s — it’s a weird thing because i know that I’m gonna play an integral part in the baby’s life because abby and chance, they made that clear before he left. And abby continues to reassure me of it. So I don’t really understand why I’m having the feelings I’m having.

Amanda: You have a biological connection to this child. That’s a powerful bond.

Devon: Yeah, it is. And I felt that bond from the first second that I helped bring him into the world. And it’s just knowing that other people are gonna be raising him, it’s harder than I thought it was gonna be.

Amanda: Devon, that is completely understandable.

Devon: And it’s also brought up a lot of memories of things that I’ve talked to you about before. Of hilary and I losing our child. And just, you know, what that baby represented. It represented so much love and possibility. It’s just — it’s one of the most difficult things to explain, that feeling of thinking you’re gonna be a father, and then it just gets taken away from you in an instant. I didn’t mean to be insensitive to you or what happened to your dad.

Amanda: No, no, no, no. It’s okay. This is about you.

Devon: It’S… the feeling that I’m having, it’s not like it’s a loss like when somebody dies, you know? It’s just, um… it’s a — it’s — like, it’s empty. Like an emptiness. And I think that I’m just trying to wrap my head around the fact that I have a son, but I don’t really have a son.

Phyllis: Hey. Oh. What a night.

Nate: Mm.

Phyllis: Where’s your girl?

Nate: Ah, she had to run to the hospital to check on a patient.

Phyllis: Oh, that’s a bummer.

Nate: Yeah, I know. I hope she makes it back soon. She was so disappointed. She was excited about getting dressed up for this event, you know? Beautiful, glamorous event.

Phyllis: Wow, you need to up your game in taking your girl on dates.

Nate: You know what? You’re right. We shouldn’t just settle for renting rooms here, like we have on several occasions.

Phyllis: Okay, well, you should double down. Just give me a call to set something up for you. I mean, like rose petals on the bed, maybe champagne, little chocolate, deejay in the room.

Nate: [ Chuckles ] Okay, I’ll keep that in mind.

Phyllis: Alright. So, what are you and elena into?

Nate: Excuse me?

Phyllis: What are you into? What are you into? What do you like? Like, nick and I, we like video games.

Nate: Oh, okay. Um…elena and I connected over being doctors, you know, working at the clinic together.

Phyllis: Okay, sterile. In a life-saving kind of way.

Nate: Okay, well, we work long hours. We don’t have much time for anything else.

Phyllis: Alright, so if i were to set up a black-tie event for you two, and I filled the room with medical textbooks, that’d kind of do it for you guys, right?

Nate: Okay, when you — when you put it that way, we do sound dull.

[ Laughs ]

Phyllis: Playing doctor’s kind of fun, I don’t know.

Nate: I suppose.

[ Both laugh ] Like you and nick playing hotelier and philanthropist.

Phyllis: Yeah, yeah, we’ve done that. It was a good time. Okay, I’m gonna set something up, and you’re gonna love it. Trust me.

Adam: I promise I was not trying to send any message by coming here with sally. Trust me, I have heard enough to know why she would not be on your top 10 list of favorite people, but there’s no hidden agenda. We’re not dating, we just struck up a casual friendship since we work together.

Jack: I’m not prying. I’m certainly not judging.

Adam: Well, you might be the only one.

Jack: Yeah, sally and I had our moment of connection, but that’s over, and I don’t hold any grudges against her. Who knows? Maybe your mission to be the best person you can be will rub off on her. I wasn’t able to bring out the potential I saw in her. Maybe you can.

Adam: Jack, I’m not planning to be anyone’s redemption story. Right now, I’m focused on work and trying to make newman media the one and only communication company in genoa city that — that matters.

Billy: Oh, no, no. Ah! Mm, I’m sorry. Yeah, I, uh — mr. Newman asked me to come and get something for him so he can prepare for his presentation, and I just realized I forgot my key. Do you mind letting me back in? This is their green room, right?

I’m sorry, but I’m not allowed to let anyone in without mr. Newman’s permission.

Billy: Yeah, right. Hotel policy.

My boss is a stickler when it comes to those kinds of things.

Billy: Phyllis, yeah, she is, isn’t she? Yeah, phyllis and I go way back. I promise you, she wouldn’t mind at all.

Uh…

Billy: Look, I don’t know how else to say this, but time is of the essence. The newmans really want to make sure that this launch goes off without a hitch, and the longer I’m up here not getting mr. Newman what he needs, you know what I mean? So if you want to go down there and interrupt a very important conversation to ask if this is okay, you go right ahead, but I’m gonna wait here, if you know what I mean. Come on.

Don’t tell ms. Summers.

Billy: Absolutely not. Thank you. Appreciate it. Okay. Let’s see what you got.

Nick: What are you doing, billy? Do lotion and jeans go together?

Amanda: I can only imagine what you’re feeling right now.

Devon: Well, listen, I also don’t want it to sound like i regret stepping up for abby and chance, because I don’T. You know, I knew what I was getting myself into, and I was happy to do it. And we had an agreement. Even saying the words “my son” doesn’t feel right. Doesn’t feel right ’cause I know that dominic is abby and chance’s baby.

Amanda: Yes, he is. But you have a biological connection to him. And it’s okay to acknowledge, even if it’s just with me, that he is your son. I kind of think that that’s why you feel guilty. You know, you have an instinct to want to stay by dominic’s side, but you have to keep your distance and…

Devon: Yeah, no, that’s — that’s exactly what it is. I appreciate you understanding me.

Amanda: You know, maybe you can concentrate on the things that you have given dominic. You know, first of all, the little guy wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for you. And secondly, I mean, the way that you, abby, mariah, and chance have gone into this from the beginning, with such openness and inclusivity, that in itself, devon, that is a gift. Dominic will never grow up wondering who his family is or where they are. You know, when I was growing up, I didn’t have anyone around me that I could look at and say, “wow, we have the same eyes.”

Devon: Well, now you do.

Amanda: [ Chuckles ] Yeah, now I do. And that’s pretty incredible.

Devon: Listen, I know that I’m gonna be able to see him whenever I want. I’m gonna be able to watch that little boy grow up. I’m just having a hard time, um, defining the role that I’m gonna have in his life. ‘Cause, like, if I’m not — if I’m not like his dad, what am I? Just devon.

Amanda: You’ll figure it out along the way.

Devon: Yeah. No, you’re right. He just got here, after all.

Amanda: Mm-hmm.

Devon: You know, he has his whole life ahead of him. And I do know that, no matter what, I’m gonna be there for him.

Amanda: Yeah, you will be. And I’ll be here for you.

Billy: [ Clears throat ]

Nick: Ooh, I just can’t wait to hear the excuse you give for being up here.

Billy: It’s not what it looks like. It’s exactly what it looks like, nick, I’m spying on the competition. At least I was, until you showed up.

Nick: You’ve been a very busy boy. Digging around in ashland’s past, doing everything you can to undermine my father and adam’s new company.

Billy: Well, you shouldn’t be upset about the latter. You despise adam just as much as I do.

Nick: He saved my daughter’s life. I’m willing to give him a second chance.

Billy: That is unfortunate.

Nick: Plus, I have a vested interest in newman media being successful. They’re a major sponsor of new hope, and this night means a lot to my father. So I’m only gonna ask you one time nicely — stop whatever you’re planning and walk away.

Jack: Where’d my brother run off to?

Lily: Oh, I’m — I’m sure he hasn’t gone far, but sit, please. Tell me about milan and how’s summer and kyle.

Jack: [ Sighs ]

Sally: Well, excitement is buzzing through the ballroom. Anticipation is building. Victor must be pleased.

Nikki: After our last conversation, I don’t understand why you think I would be interested in anything you have to say. So I’ll be clear now. Despite my long-standing differences with phyllis, I do wish she had been able to drive you out of town after what you did to summer. And I’ll tell you, no one in this room wants you here, with the exception of adam, who i suspect is using you as a prop. See, he is savvy enough to know that you’re nothing but trouble, and I highly doubt that he takes you seriously in any way. It was lovely talking to you.

Phyllis: Wow, nikki, she doesn’t mince words, does she?

Sally: Yeah, neither do I. Stick around, you’re gonna hear plenty.

Phyllis: I bet you regret coming, don’t you?

Sally: Not at all. Actually, I’m very pleased to be here representing the company that I work for. And I have a handsome date.

Phyllis: Who, adam? Oh, gosh, sally. Adam, he has an agenda. Seriously, he will tire of you and then he will kick you to the curb.

Sally: Is that what happened to you?

Phyllis: Hardly. And by the way, hey, let’s get this straight right now. You are not me.

Sally: Yeah, thank god for that.

Phyllis: I am a respected businesswoman in this town, and you are the town pariah. That’s what you are. You have no self-awareness. What is it gonna take for you to realize that you are not welcome here?

Sally: A lot more than a few insults from you.

Phyllis: Yeah, but, see, it’s not just me. It’s nikki. It’s jack, kyle. Listen, the newmans and the abbotts don’t want you here. Go home! Leave! Take your circus act somewhere else.

Sally: Go to hell, bitch.

Phyllis: [ Gasps ]

[ Indistinct conversation ]

Phyllis: Oh, god.

Jack: Here.

Nick: Look, I don’t know what went on down here, but there’s no more james bond stuff, right?

Billy: We’ll see. What is going on? Why does sally look like she jumped in the pool with her clothes on?

Lily: Oh, it wasn’t a pool, it was an ice bucket.

Billy: And the perpetrator?

Lily: Oh, who do you think? Of course. Oh, my god.

Billy: Phyllis?

Lily: Yes.

Billy: At a party that she threw? And she’s the one telling me not to ruin the night.

Lily: Oh, speaking of which, how did your hunting expedition go?

Billy: It was okay. I had to stop it. I was this close to finding the ammunition that I needed, and nick ran in with his superhero tights on and stopped me, so that’s it.

Lily: Or so you led him to believe? Is that really the end of it?

Phyllis: Oh! I let sally get to me. I shouldn’t have done that.

Jack: Well, she has a talent for that.

Phyllis: You know, I’ve had a drink thrown in my face before. You’d think I could handle it, right?

Jack: Oh, I think you handled it.

Phyllis: [ Chuckles ]

[ Sighs ]

Nick: Seems like a lot of excitement. What’d I miss?

Sally: Thank you.

Adam: Let me get you a towel.

Sally: [ Sighs ]

Adam: Here. You okay?

Sally: No, I’m not okay. I was having a really nice night until I was attacked by that low-class, spiteful, tacky, hypocritical bully. She kept coming at me. What was I supposed to do?

Adam: Seemed like a proportional response to me. You know, that is really gonna be a tough act to follow when i got to make to make the announcement. Maybe I should do my speech naked.

Sally: [ Chuckles ] Well, that would certainly get my attention. I’m really sorry for ruining your event.

Adam: Look, nothing is ruined. Alright, if anything, the party needed to be livened up a little bit. And I like your fire.

Victor: Wait a minute. Now, you’re asking me to speak four times and you only speak once?

Adam: People expect to hear from you, so I say let’s give them what they want.

Victor: Son, you are the ceo of the company, and you need to assume a more public role, alright?

Adam: Uh, I will take the section on global vision.

Victor: Good idea.

Nikki: Well, look who i found.

Victor: Hey, my boy. Join us. We’re going over the details for the party.

Nick: Yeah, cool. I wanted to follow up on that conversation we were having earlier, but it can wait until you’re finished.

Adam: No, I think we covered everything, so floor’s yours. Go right ahead.

Nick: Yeah, um, it’s kind of a private matter.

Adam: Sure, um… I have some things I need to do. Oh, and by the way, thank you for convincing phyllis to let us have this event at the grand phoenix, even though two of her least favorite people will be hosting it.

Victor: Listen, we have paid a hell of a lot of money for this evening, okay? Besides that, think of all the money she’s making renting out all those suites. They’re coming from all over the place — toronto, new york, silicon valley, boston. What the hell is — who invited billy abbott?

Phyllis: Alright. Guys, in the kitchen, where are the oysters? I don’t see any of them. Call the distribution company please. Okay, everybody in parking, make sure that the valet is completely cleared out. All you guys in housekeeping, oh, this is all hands on deck, you know? We have the pickiest, most pain-in-the-ass people coming tonight. You know, it’s a newman event, so you got to be on it. Thanks.

Billy: Hey, there.

Phyllis: Hey. You here for a meeting?

Billy: No. No, just here to grab a drink.

Phyllis: Getting a drink now when you’re — you’re gonna be here tonight?

Billy: Yeah. Is that okay with you?

Phyllis: It’s okay with me. It’s just odd.

Billy: Odd? Odd like you hosting a party for victor and adam, two people you despise?

Phyllis: Well, I despise them, but, see, I’m getting paid for tonight. You’re here voluntarily.

Billy: Yeah. Well, to be honest, it’s not voluntary. I love the oysters. Can’t get enough of them.

Phyllis: You don’t like oysters. I know that. What are you up to?

Sally: Coffee with cream, please. Jack, how are you?

Jack: I’m fine.

Sally: I want to thank you for stopping me yesterday. In the park with phyllis. I was really about to lose my cool with her, and you’re a good influence on me. And I appreciate that.

Jack: I didn’t want to see things get out of hand.

Sally: Yeah, I don’t want that either. We’re all moving on.

Jack: Well, if that’s it.

Sally: Actually, there is one more thing. I am working for newman media now.

Jack: I’m aware.

Sally: Well, I will be attending the launch party tonight in my professional capacity, and I’ve seen the guest list, so I know that you will be there, too, so I just wanted to give you a heads up so you wouldn’t be surprised when you see me.

Jack: You thought somehow i would be traumatized seeing you at a party thrown by your new employer? Just how fragile do you think i am?

Sally: [ Scoffs ] It’s not that, I just didn’t want you to think that I had some ulterior motive being there, like I was following you.

Jack: Thought never occurred to me. And it wouldn’t have mattered if it did.

Sally: Okay, then.

[ Sighs ]

Victoria: So it was a — it was a hard day?

Ashland: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, I’d like to think the worst is behind me. At least until the next round of chemo.

Victoria: Then let’s change plans.

Ashland: Well, what do you mean?

Victoria: Tonight. We don’t have to go to the launch party to watch my dad and adam pat themselves on the back.

Ashland: No, no, no, no. Cyaxares was my baby before it became newman media, and I’m still on the board. It would be bad form not to make an appearance.

Victoria: [ Sighs ] Are you sure you’re feeling up to it?

Ashland: Yeah, dr. Hastings gave me some vitamins. I can probably stay upright for a couple of hours.

Victoria: Nate, he’s a very good doctor. I’m glad that he gave you something to make you feel better, but I really doubt that he’d want you to push yourself to the point of exhaustion. We don’t have to go to all of these events, you know. We can skip the nonessential ones so that you’re ready for the most important one — our wedding.

Ashland: I will be ready completely ready for that. You can count on it.

Victoria: I am. And to tell you the truth, i really didn’t want to go tonight anyway. You can call it sour grapes, but part of me would love to see adam and the rest of newman media fall flat on their smug faces.

Adam: I invited billy and lily as a matter of professional courtesy.

Nick: That’s it?

Adam: No, there was a little reverse psychology at play. I mean, billy’s a contrarian. He likes a challenge. If I didn’t invite the guy, he’s gonna show up and be a nuisance.

Nikki: If you thought inviting him would trick him into staying away, it didn’t work. He rsvp’d yes.

Adam: Good. Let him come. He’ll have a couple drinks, he’ll make an ass of himself, and he’ll pout in the corner for the rest of the night.

Victor: Son, please, don’t be so damn glib about this, okay? This is a very important evening for us. We’re introducing newman media to the business world, and billy would love nothing more than to throw a wrench into the festivities. As far as I’m concerned, we should’ve squashed that company like a bug.

Nick: If you had done that, there’d be some collateral damage. It would’ve affected lily unfairly, which could cause some friction with devon and the rest of his family, and victoria would not be happy about that.

Victor: Who gives a damn? I don’t understand why she’s defending that character in the first place. After all he has done to her.

Nick: He is the father of her children, for starters.

Victor: Are you defending him, as well?

Nick: No, dad, I’m not. It’s just we have found some common ground on certain issues lately.

Adam: Well, let me get out of your hair. I, uh — I have a lot to do to get ready for tonight.

Victor: Yep.

Nikki: Me, too. I’m off to the salon. I will be back in plenty of time for the party.

Victor: Okay, sweetheart. Does this have to do with your sister?

Ashland: You know, I know your deal with adam goes back a lot deeper than cyaxares.

[ Sighs ] How far back does it go?

Victoria: Well, I mean, you read billy’s exposé on adam. I think that should be all the background that you need.

Ashland: Yeah, well, adam’s done some terrible things, but victor’s no saint either and you seem to have made your peace with him.

Victoria: Yeah, he’s my dad. I have a bond with him. I’ve idolized him ever since i was a child, and I’ll always see the good in him.

Ashland: And adam?

Victoria: Not the same way that I think of nick and abby. I mean, I didn’t really get to know him until we were adults, and by then, he was…

Ashland: Competition?

Victoria: No, this is not about our rivalry. He was conniving and vicious. It’s one thing to read about his crimes in that article, but it’s another thing to live with them and to see the anguish that he’s caused the people that I love.

Ashland: You’re speaking of billy’s daughter who was killed?

Victoria: Delia, she was very special, and then she was gone. Billy’s never gonna be the same.

Ashland: Well, I can understand why he’s so relentless going after adam and why he would be so fiercely protective of his own children. I would imagine he’s not gonna let up on me, but I don’t mind. I’ve experienced worse. It does bother me that these stories he’s publishing will be around online long after I’m gone, and I hate to think that harrison will come across these stories and I won’t be there to defend myself.

Victoria: Are you thinking about your legacy again? You know, you don’t have to worry. I’ll be happy to pass on anything that you want me to to harrison about your life or your past.

Ashland: Thank you.

Victoria: You already told me about the older woman who mentored you and gave you your start. Are there any other secrets that I should know about?

Billy: Mm.

Phyllis: You have that half-smile going. That means I’m not gonna like what you’re up to.

Billy: You don’t need to be worried about anything. I just came by to check out the vibe, make sure that I dress appropriately.

Phyllis: Really? Want to match your tie to the floral arrangement, do you?

Billy: All you need to know is what you already know. We protect our own.

Phyllis: You’re talking about your kids?

Billy: You went to the mat for summer, and I am willing to do the same for johnny and katie.

Phyllis: Oh, you’re talking about ashland and victoria.

Billy: Mm. Yeah. What do you know about him?

Phyllis: About ashland? He’s multi-faceted.

Billy: What does that mean?

Phyllis: He’s bossy, he’s obnoxious, and he’s arrogant. That’s what that means. And, you know, he gave up temporary custody of harrison to kyle and summer, and I guess everybody thought it was so selfless and generous.

Billy: Mm.

Phyllis: But that — that means nothing to you, right? He’s definitely dark. Those aren’t great qualities for a stepdad, are they? It doesn’t matter. You’re not marrying him. Right? Victoria is.

Billy: Well, victoria needs to know the facts before she does.

Phyllis: Oh, really, does she? You’re gonna tell her that? She’s a newman woman. I mean, they love a dark streak in a man. You know that. She was with you.

Billy: Yeah, well, it’s not that simple.

Phyllis: Are you planning on dredging up something from his past? Because, honestly, if you do, it has to be something terrible. Terrible. It can’t be some shady business dealing from the past. Victoria won’t care.

Billy: Oh, I don’t know about that.

Phyllis: Oh, I do. I mean, if you say he stole millions of dollars from an orphanage, she’ll say, “well, I mean, it was a long time ago and he’s changed since then.”

Billy: Yeah, she’s got a big heart that way.

Phyllis: Yeah, she’s got a big heart. Sure. If you do a background on ashland, the only one it’s gonna hurt is you.

Billy: Me?

Phyllis: Yeah, you. Definitely, I’m telling you. If victoria finds out that you’ve done that, she’s gonna come after you, I guarantee it.

Billy: You know, you’re not the first person to warn me of that. On the outside, I looked fine.

Nick: I was thinking about what you said earlier about, you know, anything we uncover about ashland’s past, we should keep under wraps.

Victor: We don’t want any information to fall in the wrong hands, namely billy abbott’S.

Nick: I agree. Trust me, I don’t intend to end up as one of his sources, but if the situation’s reversed and he comes to me with information, i really think we should keep the communication channels open.

Victor: Son, I don’t want you to have anything to do with him. Nothing. No communication with him, okay?

Nick: Okay, but how can you be sure that it’s not billy who’s the one who finds these skeletons in ashland’s closet, if they exist? He’s got a team of investigators out there, too. They were able to find out everything that your guys did about that woman who was mentoring locke.

Victor: Son, what are you suggesting? That you have an open communication with him all the time?

Nick: I’m just saying, if we truly believe that victoria could end up in some trouble with this ashland situation, then we should use every resource that we can, alright? And you shouldn’t hesitate to come to me with any information that you find. I promise you, it’s not going to end up in some chanccomm exposé. Neither of us want that.

Victor: We absolutely do not want that.

Nick: So just keep me in the loop, alright?

Victor: Look, this is all speculative, okay? As you and your mother pointed out, we don’t even know if there’s anything to find, okay?

Nick: Alright.

Victor: So, anyway, tonight is about newman media. Let’s celebrate it and have a good time, okay? I’m gonna get ready. I’ll see you at the grand phoenix. Alright?

Nick: Alright.

Ashland: Secrets? It sounds so mysterious when you put it that way.

Victoria: A woman takes you under her wing, and then she dies. And then you buy two television stations owned by her. It’s — it’s mysterious.

Ashland: But I wouldn’t call it a secret. I mean, the story’s been around for so long.

Victoria: Well, it was the first I’d heard of it.

Ashland: Because it just doesn’t come up anymore. But I’d be glad to answer any questions or concerns you might have about it.

Victoria: Are you okay?

Ashland: No, I’m fine. I just — I just need to rest.

Victoria: Okay, listen, here’s what I’m gonna do. I’m gonna — I’m gonna go to society and I am — I’m gonna get you some chicken soup. It’s rey — rey rosales’ sister’s famous recipe. Sharon swears it got her through her chemo.

Ashland: Well, that sounds good. I’ll have it with my smoothie.

Victoria: I’ll be right back.

Sally: Thanks.

[ Sighs ]

[ Scoffs ]

Jack: Something to add?

Sally: I know that I’m not your favorite person at the moment. Things are awkward between us, so I thought that I would give you a heads up that I was gonna be at the party, but you went out of your way to make me feel small and insignificant. You were deliberately hurtful, and, frankly, jack, that’s beneath you.

Jack: Are you finished?

Sally: [ Scoffs ] I am, actually. I’m finished with trying to play this game that I just can’t win. To hell with that. I am who I am. And I’m proud of myself and everything that I’ve accomplished. I have the tools and the drive to make a success of myself.

Jack: You always did. That’s the shame of it.

Sally: No, no, you know — you know what, jack? No more lectures. No more brilliant advice and no more pitying looks. I am making a fresh start with people who accept me and who are rooting for me, and it feels really good. So you can think whatever you want of me.

[ Scoffs ] I really don’t give a damn anymore.

Jack: [ Sighs ]

Victoria: Well, this can’t be a very good sign. Drinking alone in the afternoon?

Nick: Don’t read anything into it. I just needed, you know, a quiet place to think.

Victoria: And the library wasn’t serving beer.

Nick: No, but they should. You should sit down. I’ll let you buy the next round.

Victoria: I guess I could use an adult beverage. It’s been quite a day.

Nick: Mm. What’s going on?

Victoria: I have a feeling you already know. Surely dad’s told you that he’s having ashland investigated.

Nick: Yeah, he may have mentioned something about that.

Victoria: It is such a slap in the face.

Nick: Vick, you know it’s coming from a place of love.

Victoria: Well, it’s still insulting. You’re not okay with it, are you?

Nick: I don’t know, it’s tricky. I’m a father, too. I remember telling phyllis over and over again to stay out of summer’s issues ’cause she’s an adult and she can make her own decisions.

Victoria: Exactly.

Nick: But phyllis’ motherly instincts were spot on about tara and sally.

Victoria: Well, this is a different situation. It’s not about dad’s instincts. It’s about his lack of faith in my judgment.

Nick: No, it’s not, alright, vick? You get to make your own decisions. Nobody’s arguing with you about that. Dad just wants you to have all the information that’s available.

Victoria: [ Scoffs ] Okay, well, what dastardly deeds has he uncovered?

Nick: Nothing incriminating. But something puzzling.

Victoria: Tell me.

Nick: When ashland started out, he was mentored by an older woman.

Victoria: Well, of course she’s older. Mentors are, by definition, more experienced.

Nick: You want me to stop?

Victoria: No, I’m fascinated.

Nick: Well, when the woman died, ashland bought two of the tv stations that she owned and ran. This was the beginning of his media empire, and he was just in his 20s. Nobody knows where he got the money to purchase them.

Victoria: That’s it?

Nick: Doesn’t that sound concerning to you?

Victoria: No, not at all. Ashland’s already told me the entire story. He would’ve told you and dad, as well, if you would have just asked.

Nick: Well, alright. Well, did he tell you where he got the money?

Victoria: I really don’t think that it matters. Unless your implication is that he robbed a bank, it’s nobody’s business.

Lily: I’m sure you’re worried about the time commitment to askmdnow, ’cause I know you’re very busy at the hospital. But I promise you, we’ll work around your schedule.

Elena: I appreciate the flexibility, but there’s actually another issue I’d like to discuss. If I do this, I’d like to take a different approach.

Lily: Okay, how so?

Elena: Right now, the way things are set up, it’s basically that people have to seek information on the site. So they go on the internet, they type in their question, and the answers are right there for them.

Lily: Yeah, and that format’s been very effective.

Elena: I think it could be better.

Lily: Okay, tell me more.

Elena: Well, I would like to emulate the model of the clinic. We’re able to bring health services where people need them. We’re able to engage with the community. We’re proactive about reaching out to them.

Lily: Yeah, I mean, that’s very intriguing, but how do we translate that to an online setting?

Elena: Advertising, outreach.

Lily: Right. Like we give people the information they need before they know they need it.

Elena: Exactly. I think it would be so great if we could focus on preventative care. About maintaining your health instead of just treating symptoms.

Lily: Elena, we are gonna do some great things together.

[ Both chuckle ]

Sally: [ Sighs ] Adam. Thank you so much for the invitation to accompany you to the launch party. I’ve thought about it, and i would love to be your date. Does scrubbing feel like a workout?

Victoria: Yes, this morning, and it’s hit him a lot harder than he expected.

Nick: Yeah, that’s rough. I mean, he’s really going through a lot.

Victoria: Exactly. And the last thing that he should have to worry about is his future father-in-law accusing him of god knows what.

Nick: Hey, just so you know, dad has said to me a few times he really hopes he doesn’t find anything in ashland’s past, and I believe him.

Victoria: That’s not even the point, nick.

Nick: Well, he likes ashland. He really respects him.

Victoria: Well, I would hate to see what disrespect looks like.

Nick: You already did. Billy — remember that? This has got to be better.

Victoria: So, what are you suggesting that I say to him — “well, you think you have it bad, you should see how he dealt with my ex”?

Nick: I mean, it’s progress, right?

Victoria: [ Sighs ] Give mom and dad my regrets. I will not be attending the soirée this evening.

Nick: Okay. And what about our brother? Would you like me to say anything to him from you? I mean, it is his big night.

Victoria: Please.

Nick: You know he saved your niece’s life, right?

Victoria: Okay, fine. Tell adam “good job.”

Nick: [ Chuckles ] Hey, vick? You know, I listened to you rant about dad. I’m happy to do it, but I know you. If dad comes and says that ashland’s past is clean, I know you’re gonna be relieved. You might even thank him for his efforts.

Victoria: Well, I wouldn’t go that far. I might find it in my heart to forgive him by my wedding day. Thank you for the drink. Have fun at the party.

Victor: Abby? Hi, my sweetheart. I’m so sorry that you can’t make it tonight. Yeah, well, I know you have more important things to do. You got to keep an eye on that beautiful boy. He’s adorable. And I’m so happy that all of you — you and mariah and the baby boy are all healthy. Our prayers were answered, indeed. Okay. I’ll tell you all about it, okay? Love you. Good night. Ashland: Oh, no, thank you, my love. I’m full. And I can’t eat another thing, but thank you so much for taking such good care of me.

Ashland: Well, I think I’m going to turn in. And I don’t think you should stick around here and just watch me sleep. You should probably head over to the party. No doubt it’s already begun.

Victoria: I already told you, I really don’t want to go.

Ashland: Yeah, but it’s a big deal. And everybody’s gonna be there. Probably be a good way for you to score points with your father. ‘Cause I know you had begun repairing the relationship with him when all this nonsense with his investigators began. And it would probably get under adam’s skin, as well.

Victoria: Well, you’re making it sound very tempting, but there’s nowhere that I’d rather be than right here with you. That’s all I want right now is some time with you. Now, are you really tired or were you just saying that to get me out the door?

Ashland: Well, I was exhausted, but you were right about the soup. It has restorative powers.

Victoria: Oh, good. So what do you say to a nice, relaxing back rub?

Ashland: I’d say I don’t deserve you.

Victoria: [ Chuckles ] Well, you can let me be the judge of that, thank you very much.

[ Cellphone rings ]

Nikki: Oh, uh, go ahead, darling. I’ll be right there. It’s victoria.

Victor: Yep. Mr. Bainbridge. How are you?

Nikki: Are you on your way?

[ Gasps ] Oh, no. Oh, well, I’m so sorry. Well, if he’s resting, you could come on your own. We’d love to see you. I understand.

Phyllis: Wait, no ice? None? You need — well, you need about 30 bags. At the ice store. I don’t know where you get it. Somewhere, just get it. Seriously, these guys, they’re killing me. It’s an outside group that we hired. These are not my employees. They keep on screwing up. I’m gonna need some pampering after this is over.

Nick: Well, I’m your man.

Phyllis: Good. You are my man. You are my man — don’t forget it.

Nick: I haven’T. You look — bang. Wow.

Phyllis: [ Chuckles ] I do? Thank you. Even with, you know, my headset.

Nick: You know, I feel like you’re about to ask me if I want fries with, like, my cheeseburger, you know? It’s kind of a turn-on.

Phyllis: Really?

[ Laughs ] Hey, nikki! It’s nikki. It’s your mom.

Nikki: Hi.

Nick: Mother, you look incredible.

Nikki: Well, thank you. You look rather dapper yourself.

Phyllis: Isn’t he handsome?

Nikki: Of course.

Phyllis: Are you serious? Low on champagne, as well? You guys got to be kidding me.

Nikki: She’s very busy.

Nick: Yeah.

Nikki: I just spoke with victoria, and she and ashland will not be coming tonight.

Nick: Yeah, he had chemo today.

Nikki: And I feel for him, but I doubt they would have shown up no matter what. Victoria’s still frustrated with your father for investigating her fiancé. I assume that’s why you came over earlier — to talk about that?

Nick: Let’s not get into that right now.

Nikki: So much for reverse psychology.

Lily: Well, I really hope devon doesn’t feel weird about coming here after what happened last time. Our family has come so far since then.

Billy: Yeah.

Lily: Okay, clearly, you’re just gonna focus on victoria and ashland all night. Well, if that’s the case, please make it less obvious. Otherwise, victoria’s gonna get upset.

Nick: You don’t need to worry about that. Victoria’s not here, billy, so if she’s the only reason you showed up, then you don’t need to stay. Yeah, yeah, yeah

Billy: Oh, come on, nick, look at this place. There’s gonna be a lot of powerful people here, a lot of people that we need to say hi to. Plus, when phyllis throws a party, there’s always bound to be fireworks. And the good kind, the unexpected kind. That’s what I’m here for.

Lily: So, um, why isn’t victoria coming? Did she find out that victor is investigating ashland?

Billy: She did, and she’s not happy, but ashland had his second round of chemo today. That’s why they’re not here.

Lily: Oh, well, that’s really rough. I know the day of treatment is awful, but the day after was even worse, so he definitely needs to rest.

Billy: Of course, unless it’s a cover story.

Nick: It’s not. I ran into victoria at society and she was picking up soup for ashland.

Billy: Did you ask her about ashland’s widow?

Lily: Um, you know, hey, there’s nate and elena. Let’s go say hello.

Phyllis: Yeah, the ballroom is open now. You can let everyone know. Ohh.

[ Indistinct conversation ] Hey!

Jack: Wow! Place looks amazing. You look even better.

Phyllis: Ah, thank you, thank you. So did you get that picture from summer and kyle?

Jack: Yeah, I did.

Phyllis: [ Laughs ] So adorable. Harrison seems to be adjusting.

Jack: Yeah, he’s a cutie.

Phyllis: He is. You don’t sound very enthusiastic.

Jack: Oh, I —

Phyllis: Don’t worry about it. I get it, I get it. But listen, I love the pictures. I want her to keep sending them, but it’s like a dagger to my heart. I just want my daughter here.

Jack: Yeah, that big old house is so empty right now, I’m tempted to ask billy to bring johnny and katie over to run around and make noise.

Phyllis: Billy’s here with lily. Is there a problem?

Jack: I would just as soon he steer clear of adam altogether. He’s on the right track with lily and the kids and everything he’s doing at chanccomm. Why borrow trouble?

Phyllis: Yeah, well, a lot of his success at chanccomm has to do with his relationship with adam and victor.

Jack: Well, those successes are a double-edged sword. There’s so much pain and trauma in their history. Why would he get sucked back in to all that misery?

Elena: It is nice to have an excuse to get dressed up again.

Lily: What do you mean? Who needs an excuse? Let’s just go on a double date sometime. Yeah?

Billy: Yeah, I’m in.

Nate: Yeah, name the time and place. We’re there.

[ Cellphone chimes ]

Elena: Ah! My patient is having post-op complications. I need to get back to the hospital.

Nate: Want me to come with you?

Elena: No, no, no, you stay here, enjoy. Hopefully it won’t be too complicated, and I’ll be back before the party’s over.

Billy: See you.

Elena: Excuse me.

Nick: Hey, dad.

Victor: Hi, son. Do me a favor. Keep an eye on billy boy abbott, okay? I don’t trust that guy.

Nick: Yeah, I talked to him earlier. It seems like he’s here just for the party and not to be a trouble-maker.

Victor: I assure you, he is not just here for the party. That guy is trouble, wherever he goes.

Nick: Alright, if it’ll make you feel better, I’ll keep an eye on him.

Victor: Please do.

Nikki: I assume by the look on your face that nicholas told you the news.

Victor: What news?

Nikki: Did adam tell you he would be bringing her?

Victor: Unh-unh.

Phyllis: Son of a bitch.

Jack: She said she was coming. She didn’t mention with whom.

Phyllis: Well, I’m kicking her out.

Jack: No, you can’T.

Phyllis: Why not? I’ve done it before.

Jack: She’s the date of the co-host. You have an event to run. Don’t get sidetracked.

Phyllis: Okay. They’re both so destructive, they’ll bring each other down. Karma’s a bitch.

Sally: Everyone’s staring.

Adam: [ Chuckles ] Good. It is a newman media party, so all the attention should be on the company’s employees.

Sally: Well, I think I’m gonna enjoy myself. Thank you, again, for inviting me. It’s gonna be fun.

Adam: [ Chuckles ] It is, indeed.
