Tessa: It is. Now, you tell me.

Mariah: Whatever our daughter needs, we’ll do it. Whatever this turns out to be, we’re gonna face it. Just like we face everything.

Tessa: Yes. Um, one step at a time. We’ll make sure that she has whatever she needs. Our baby girl.

Mariah: Elena.

Elena: Hey.

Mariah: Hi. [ Laughing ]

Tessa: Oh, hi.

Elena: I don’t mean to interrupt.

Tessa: Oh no, you’re not interrupting. It’s fine.

Elena: You sure?

Tessa: Um, we just had an appointment with aria’s pediatrician.

Mariah: She gave us some upsetting news.

Esther: Ah, sharon. I was hoping to see your granddaughter. Aria, what a beautiful name. How is she?

Sharon: Um, she’s good. She’s very, uh, feisty and wonderful.

[ Both chuckle ] And mariah and tessa, um, they’re settling into being parents.

Esther: Ah, I’m so happy for them and so happy for me too. The new manager of crimson lights.

Sharon: I can’t thank you enough for taking this on.

Chloe: Mom, you really don’t think it’s gonna be too much? I mean, you’re still doing work as a receptionist at chancellor winters.

Esther: Honey, uh, that’s part-time. I could do that with my eyes closed. But running things here, well, that’s exciting. And sharon’s excited to have me too.

Chloe: And I think it’s great. I, you know, I’m just looking out for you. I mean, no offense.

Esther: Well, hey, it’s not like working for jill, which was basically indentured servitude. This is perfect for me.

Sharon: Well, you know what? Come up with a schedule that you’re comfortable with and we will make it work.

Esther: Consider it done.

Nick: Hi, ladies. Sorry if I’m interrupting. Sharon, could I talk to you for a minute?

Victor: You know, sweetheart, I have decided to start the process of merging sna with newman media.

Nikki: After finding out that adam blackmailed audra for the same result? Why would you give in now?

Victor: It has nothing to do with any of that. It has to do with me wanting to merge the two companies. But I think now is the right time.

Nikki: You seem pretty nonchalant given the circumstances. How did nicholas respond to this?

Victor: I don’t know.

Nikki: And adam?

Victor: Well, adam, obviously, suspected I had some ulterior motives.

Nikki: I would imagine he’s right to wonder what you are up to.

Adam: Why did you meet with my father last night?

Nate: I’m coo of the company with his name on it. He wanted to talk.

Adam: About what?

Nate: Business.

Adam: Specifically.

Nate: Ask him.

Adam: I’m asking you. What was the topic of conversation? And what the hell are you up to?

Adam: Except 10 minutes after you left he did a 180 and he decided it was time to merge sna with newman media.

Nate: Which is exactly what you took great pains with audra to force. Congratulations on the win.

Adam: Nate, how do you figure into it? You know, nick told me that you could not be trusted.

Nate: [ Scoffs ] That’s almost funny.

Adam: Why? Because you’re such a standup guy?

Nate: Because this is what you and your brother managed to agree on, me. But you couldn’t put together a solid business plan for the company you’re creating.

Adam: Wait a minute. That’s the angle that you’re playing? That’s how you’ve managed to ingratiate yourself with my father, the loyal soldier who is offering the brilliant business insights?

Nate: Victor came to me. He wanted my take on how things were progressing with sna.

Adam: And you were just more than eager to offer your opinion, weren’t you?

Nate: Newman enterprises controls all entities involved. I am the coo.

Adam: Hm.

Nate: Of course I made it my business to know where things stand.

Adam: And what did you tell him?

Nate: What I believe. What I’ve always believed. That folding sna into newman media is a smart move. It’s why I was willing to risk pushing for the merger even after victor made it clear he was against it.

Adam: I was right.

Nate: Yes!

Adam: All along.

Nate: Yes. Yes, you were. But your tactics, as dirty as it gets. Blackmailing audra, using a scandal to damage the business. You were willing to risk burning everything down just to get what you wanted.

Adam: But it never would’ve come to that.

Nate: Victor should have cut you lose, but instead he’s given you the prize. Newman media on a silver platter combined with sna. Can’t you just take the win? Or do you always have to find a reason to create another enemy?

Nikki: So what made you change your mind?

Victor: Been my plan all along. To create a powerful media company.

Nikki: And how does nate fit into this?

Victor: His analysis of mccall and kirsten incorporated impressed me. And, uh, it reinforced my doubts about what was wrong with those two companies. Then we both realized that the company that sharon and nicholas and adam started needed reinforcement, hence newman media. I don’t wanna delay that merger any longer.

Nikki: And who’s going to run it?

Victor: I don’t know yet.

Nikki: So somebody stands to lose out. Darling, please consider the consequences of pushing your sons too hard. Nicholas has already done what you asked to keep an eye on adam. I mean, there has to be a limit.

Victor: Sweetheart, you know me. I’m setting this company up for success.

Nikki: Yes, but you’re adding a wild card into the mix. I still believe that nate is too ambitious for his own good as well as victoria’S. And what does she say about all of this?

Victor: You know, I’m waiting for her to return my call, but she is in an emergency meeting in la.

Nikki: Oh, please tell me you’re not going to finalize anything until you speak to her. Give her a chance to weigh in.

Victor: Well, I’m moving forward. The merger will take place. And when the young lady comes back from la, they’ll be a whole new dynamic at newman media.

Sharon: Has victor done something?

Nick: [ Sighs ] Not yet. Not that I know of.

Sharon: Okay. Well, adam warned us and he was right. Victor had his own plans for our company.

Nick: Now that you’ve had time to think about everything my dad has said, how are you feeling about things?

Sharon: I hung on to kirsten incorporated because I wanted to do something positive with the company. I wanted to have some kind of, I don’t know, a good impact. But with victor’s plans of getting it, there won’t be much left.

Nick: We can fight him on that.

Sharon: That will be a tough battle. I don’t think that victor would’ve told us of his plans unless he had all of his bases covered. And I keep going back to the way that he worded it. He wants to fold sna into newman media. To me, that doesn’t sound like a merger. It sounds more like newman media will be swallowing us up.

Nick: I get the same feeling that this is just some plan to make newman media a bigger, more formidable division. But then what? Are we gonna suddenly find ourselves in a position where we are answering to adam?

Adam: You know, you’re the one who seems to be making enemies left and right. And that’ll happen when you mix ambition and a disregard for the rules of the game.

Nate: Wow. [ Chuckles ] Hard to believe you managed that with a straight face considering you just tried to muscle your way into getting control of newman media.

Adam: What do you mean? You keep trying to make this about me.

Nate: You’re giving me way too much credit. Do you really imagine that I can influence your father?

Adam: There is something going on.

Nate: Even if I did have that kind of sway, you are getting what you wanted. Will it only be satisfying if it’s on your terms? Are you that arrogant?

Adam: No.

Adam: Look, there is something going on and I don’t know what it is yet, but I will find out.

Nate: Hey, call me as soon as you can. Victor is merging sna with newman media after all. Did you know this was coming? When my doctor gave me breztri for my copd

Tessa: The thunder was so loud it made us both jump.

Mariah: And aria slept right through it. She didn’t react at all.

Tessa: I realized that I had some similar feelings when I would sing to her. And sharon thought it was just us being new parents, just feeding each other’s worry.

Mariah: So she said that we should go get aria’s hearing checked so we could put our minds at ease. But after all of these tests…

Tessa: The doctor said that she could have severe hearing loss.

Elena: Wow. That’s a lot to process. Uh, what else did the doctor say?

Mariah: Uh, I don’t know. My mind was racing, so I took notes.

Tessa: Uh, the pediatrician couldn’t test aria further to try to identify a possible cause or try to put a name on it.

Mariah: Okay, so she said it could be conductive hearing loss. Uh, that’s a problem with the outer ear, I guess.

Elena: Yeah, which is easily treatable.

Mariah: Yes. But if it’s the inner ear, which is sensory neural loss, that– that could be permanent.

Elena: Right. Um, I take it you already made an appointment with a specialist?

Tessa: Yes.

Mariah: Yeah, we have.

Elena: Good. They’ll be able to give you specific information. Let you know what you’re dealing with. In the meantime, try not to drive yourselves crazy thinking about the worst-case scenario. Aria’s diagnosis can be anywhere on a very broad spectrum, and there is a chance that it’s curable. And even if it’s not–

Tessa: There are hearing aids. And I’m sure that there’s stuff that we haven’t even heard of.

Elena: Exactly.

Mariah: Or a– a cochlear implant like devon had. Whatever aria needs. Whatever we have to do for our daughter, we’ll do it.

Elena: Of course you will. And the best thing you both can do right now is just take everything one step at a time.

Sharon: Let’s not jump to conclusions.

Nick: We need to be prepared.

Sharon: I’m aware. It is my company that victor is talking about cutting down to the bone. And adam, after what he pulled, victor only kept him on because of the optics.

Nick: That’s what dad says.

Sharon: Well, finances were secured in part because of adam’s involvement in it. Cutting him loose before a merger even took place would’ve been a bad look.

Nick: The bottom line is we just have no idea what is going on in dad’s head.

Sharon: Which is why we should not overreact.

Nick: But it’s the constant push and pull with dad and adam. I mean, one minute dad is furious with adam and the next, he’s handing him yet another golden opportunity that adam has never earned.

Sharon: We need to see the details of victor’s plans for the rollout. Speculating is pointless.

Nick: Well, trust me, adam has got visions of the big chair dancing in his head.

Sharon: It won’t be up to him.

Nick: But he already resorted to blackmail. This is just going to fuel his worst instincts.

Sharon: I hope you’re wrong.

[ Knocking on the door ]

[ Sally sighs ]

Adam: Hey.

Sally: Hi. I’m so sorry. Is this a bad time?

Adam: No, I’m just–

Sally: Okay.

Adam: I’m surprised to see you. Uh, what’s on your mind?

Sally: The offer that you made me to come work for the company that you’re creating? I have been thinking a lot about it, you know, weighing all the pros and the cons.

Adam: Well, I hope this means that you have come to take me up on it.

Sally: Well, before i give you a definitive answer, I need to discuss it first with nick.

Adam: [ Clicks tongue ] Oh, you haven’t told nick yet?

Sally: Well, I didn’t want him to talk me out of it or into it. You know, I wanted to make this decision on my own.

Adam: Of course– of course, you do.

Sally: Also, I have some questions. These hands used to hold me as a little girl.

Sharon: Okay. Here are some emergency numbers in case something comes up. It’s an electrician, a plumber. And I made a checklist of things that need to be done for setup and after closing, just while you’re getting the hang of being the manager.

Esther: Oh, managing crimson lights. I just like hearing it.

[ Laughing ]

Sharon: Well, do you have any other questions?

Esther: Nope. I got this.

Nick: I have no doubt.

Esther: [ Chuckles ] Well, go enjoy moguling. And don’t worry about a thing.

Sharon: Okay. I’ll talk to you later.

Esther: Okay.

[ Soft exhale ] What if I got a badge that said, “esther valentine, manager”? Too much?

Chloe: [ Laughing ] You are too much.

Esther: I can handle this, honey.

Chloe: I know you can. Um, so what are you thinking? You want me to redecorate?

Esther: [ Chuckling ] No, no. The coffee house is an institution. It’s perfect the way it is.

Chloe: Well, I really am happy for you.

Esther: [ Chuckling ] Me too.

[ Softly groaning ] Oh, honey, it is so sweet how you worry about me. Even if you roll your eyes and you make those heavy sighs, I know that it comes outta love. Don’t you try to deny that. I love you so much.

Chloe: Aw, mom.

[ Esther chuckles ]

Audra: Thank you.

[ Sighs ] Start with the good news, if there’s any.

Nate: Well, it’s not official yet, but victor seemed to have decided it’s time to fold sna into newman media.

Audra: I meant good news for me.

Nate: Newman media is going to be an exponentially bigger company.

Audra: Yeah, which I will no longer be running.

Nate: You’ve exceeded all expectations in the role. The numbers speak for themselves.

Audra: Okay. Something tells me, nick, sharon and adam aren’t sitting around talking about what a great job I’ve been doing.

Nate: How can that not be a part of the conversation?

Audra: Because they’re in it for themselves, jogging for position.

Nate: Look, there are a lot of moving parts to this.

Audra: You know, and what makes this even worse, what is so galling, is that adam blackmailed me to try to force this merger through.

Nate: Yes, and risked endangering the company.

Audra: You know, victor was so furious. Not just about the coercion, but that adam went directly against him and now he’s just gonna turn around and do what adam wanted. He’s just gonna give that to him?

Nate: It– it’s a mistake to think that you know what victor is thinking or how this is going to end.

Sally: Well, this is what you’ve wanted all along. To merge the two media companies that newman owns.

Adam: [ Laughing ] After all the grief that my father gave me, he now thinks the timing is right.

Sally: Yeah, well, victor just needed to remind everyone who’s still in control, but who cares, right? ‘Cause it’s happening. So you must be thrilled.

Adam: It is smart business. It makes sense that my dad’s gotten behind it, but I’m not sure that I trust his motives though.

Sally: I mean, victor might surprise you.

Adam: Let’s say I’m cautiously optimistic and even more so because you wanna be a part of it. There’s just– still, there’s a lot of variables.

Sally: Yeah. I get it.

Adam: Like nate.

Sally: Nate?

Adam: Mm-hmm.

Sally: Why nate?

Adam: The guy has somehow managed to make inroads with my dad. He– he’s a problem. There’s simply too many cooks in this corporate kitchen.

Sally: What do you mean?

Adam: Look, I– I’m– I’m finally gonna get back control of the company that we built together. It’s gonna feel so good to slip back into that chair. And I intend to have you right there beside me.

Sally: [ Scoffs ] I assumed that when victor merges sna and newman media that you and nick and sharon would run the company together.

Adam: No. That– that would never work. And my dad knows that.

Sally: He told you that?

Adam: He’s not even calling it a merger. He says he wants to fold sna into newman media and make newman media a powerhouse, okay? There has to be one vision, one leader. The guy who built the company from the ground up. It’s my company. It never should have been taken away from me to begin with.

[ Knocking on the door ]

Nick: Adam. It’s me and sharon.

[ Sally sighs ]

Elena: Actually, I’m heading home. I ended up picking up an extra shift for a colleague.

Mariah: Wow. You pulled another all-nighter?

Tessa: And you’re here giving us medical advice?

Elena: Oh, I was talking to you both as a friend, not as a doctor.

Tessa: Well, it helped. You are such a calm presence.

Mariah: When we were feeling anything but calm.

Elena: Well, of course. We’re talking about aria’s health.

Mariah: So other than saving lives and calming down new parents…

[ Laughing ] …How are you?

Elena: You know.

Mariah: No. No, I don’T. That’s why I was asking.

Elena: Uh, huh. What can I say? Um, I have been working in the hospital a lot. I got involved in some new research.

Mariah: So you’re doing that on top of subbing for colleagues? [ Laughing ]

Elena: I actually don’t mind working the extra shifts. I kind of welcome it.

Tessa: We worry about you.

Mariah: I– I think we’re just concerned that you’re piling on all of this work as a way to deal with what happened with nate or not deal with it.

Elena: Well, I mean, right now work is the one thing that hasn’t disappointed me. Probably the only thing.

[ Chuckles ]

Tessa: You have your friends.

Mariah: You have us.

Audra: Was that your way of saying you have more information about what victor’s planning?

Nate: No.

Audra: Come on. Am I gonna get demoted? Are they just gonna fire me?

Nate: I promise not to let that happen.

Audra: I like to believe you have that kind of influence, nate, but I’m up against victor’s sons.

Nate: Adam’s actions haven’t exactly inspired confidence, audra.

Audra: You know, victor has an uncanny knack when it comes to his kids. And it’s clear that he wants the whole brood working at the business. Just one big happy family. We’re miserable either way.

Nate: We have no idea what victor has planned for adam, sharon, and nick. It’s possible you’ll stay right where you are.

Audra: You can’t seriously think that victor’s gonna keep me on as ceo of his shiny new media empire.

Nate: Again, it’s a mistake to think that you can predict what victor’s going to do. Just keep showing that you deserve this job. Stay the course.

Audra: No, that’s exactly what I’m not gonna do. Just wait around and hope for the best. Look at adam.

Nate: He’s the last person you wanna emulate.

Audra: He has relentlessly gone after what he wanted. He understood exactly how far he could push. You know, maybe, despite all the noise victor’s made, a part of him respects that.

Nate: What are you thinking?

Audra: That I like my job. I like the lifestyle it affords me. And I think it’s time I go fight for it.

[ Audra sighs ]

Sharon: Hello, adam.

Adam: Welcome. Welcome.

Nick: What’s going on?

Sally: Adam offered me a job at your new company and there were some things I needed to discuss with him before I told you about it.

Nick: Yet another unilateral decision.

Sharon: What job did he offer you?

Sally: Well, we actually didn’t talk specifics, which is exactly why I did not feel the need to mention it until I got a better idea of what exactly I would be getting into.

Nick: Oh, you’d be an incredible hire, sally. But this is something he should have run by his partners first.

Sally: This is what you’d be getting into.

Adam: We had a conversation. What’s the problem?

Nick: You are not in charge.

[ Adam sighs ]

Sally: Okay, I realize you guys have a lot more important things to discuss, so I will be on my way.

[ Sally sighs ] Are you mad that I didn’t tell you sooner? Adam told me that victor is on board with merging the companies now, so everything’s on hold.

Nick: Obviously this is something I wish you would’ve run by me first, but I’m sure you didn’t want me to influence your decision.

Sally: You know me well. There was also some things I needed to make clear to adam before I could even consider it. You know, what it would mean and what it would not mean for him and me.

Nick: Yeah, I– I get it. But adam will say whatever it is he thinks you want to hear.

Sally: I’m not naive.

Nick: I know. Can we meet up later?

Sally: I would love that.

[ Lips smack ]

Adam: Well, I assume you wanna talk about how to make this work moving forward.

Sharon: Well, this certainly isn’t working.

Nick: Took the words right outta my mouth.

Adam: Then we are all in agreement. And since newman media is the major player in this, I think it is only natural that I take charge.

Victor: Hello, audra.

Audra: [ Sighs ] Hello, mr. And mrs. Newman.

Victor: Please have a seat.

Nikki: To what do we owe the pleasure?

Audra: I heard a rumor about sna and newman media.

Victor: Nothing has been determined yet.

Nikki: No. Information is being shared on a need-to-know basis.

Audra: Well, the ceo, I think, uh, might be allowed some grace. Newman media’s profits were up 17% last quarter.

Victor: 17.4%.

Audra: Look, I have been an effective leader and I will continue to be to deliver results, okay? No matter what you decide.

Nikki: How did you find out about this?

Audra: Adam confronted nate. He thinks that nate is orchestrating a power play with mr. Newman. He told me as a courtesy. Now I’m asking you this, with all due respect, am I gonna be out of a job? Kayaking is my thing.

Elena: I am grateful to have you both as a friend. And I appreciate your support and your candor.

Tessa: Yeah, well, that’s a part of the deal.

Mariah: My uncensored mouth.

Elena: [ Laughing ] I was a bit of a mess after the breakup, but I think I am doing a lot better.

Mariah: Trust me. I get it. I’ve been through it before.

Tessa: Yeah, we both have.

[ Both laugh ]

Elena: And honestly, I really love the work that I’m doing. It fulfills me and I don’t need a partner to do that.

Tessa: Yeah, of course not.

Mariah: We just want you to be aware. You know, burnout is no joke. And I’ve seen people who haven’t even been aware of how hard they’re pushing themselves until they hit that wall.

Elena: Oh, I will be aware. I promise. And just so you both know, I have released all of the hurt and anger that I’ve been carrying around.

Tessa: That is a big step.

Elena: Yeah. I think nate is completely out of my system.

Mariah: Good for you.

[ Elena laughs ]

Tessa: I mean, if you ever need to talk or vent–

Elena: Thank you. Both of you. But I know you have a lot on your plate right now.

Mariah: Get some sleep.

Elena: Okay, I will. Let me know what the specialist says.

Tessa: Okay.

Mariah: [ Sighs ] Okay. I think it’s time we tell my mom.

Nick: How is it you’re the natural choice to run things on your own? The plan was to merge the two companies.

Sharon: Three. Just a reminder, I still own kirsten incorporated.

Adam: You already agreed in principle to the merger. Guys, this is happening. I’m giving you a vision for success.

Nick: With you in charge and me and sharon answering to you.

Sharon: You act as if you are owed the position because you were pushed out of newman media in the past. This is about a lot more than you, adam, and your hurt feelings, and your need to make a point.

Adam: I am being logical.

Nick: You are incapable of being logical because your ego’s taking up too much space.

Adam: Fact, victor is going to streamline kirsten even more than we already have. And what’s left, it will be a fraction of the original company.

Sharon: Nothing has been decided yet. And don’t underestimate my resolve.

Adam: Sharon, you wanted to hang onto the company to do good and as a bigger entity, you’ll get to do much more of that. Does it really matter what your title is?

Nick: Yes. Because it gives you the power to make good decisions and to stop people from making bad ones.

Adam: This isn’t a merger. Newman media is taking over sna. And there’s no one who knows newman media better than I do.

Sharon: All your talk about collaboration and needing this to work–

Nick: It’s all talk when it comes to this partnership because your plan all along was to regain newman media and drag our company along for the ride.

Victor: You know, audra, it’s quite brazen of you to walk in here and make demands.

Audra: That was not my intention at all. I just wanted to know where I stood.

Victor: It showed guts.

Nikki: It showed something.

Victor: I must tell you that I was impressed how you managed your position as ceo of the company. You brought a lot of innovation to it.

Audra: Thank you.

Victor: And I wouldn’t be a good businessman if I let you go. So whatever happens, however, this shakes out… you will find yourself having a position at newman.

Audra: I appreciate your faith in me. And I mean it. I will continue to give everything to the job.

Victor: I have no doubt.

Nikki: That is what we pay you for.

Victor: So I shall keep you apprised of whatever decision I make, okay?

Audra: Thank you so much for your time.

Victor: Thank you for coming by.

Nikki: She is as driven and ambitious as nate.

Victor: Yeah, I know. I kind of like that.

Nikki: Well, yeah, you’ll like it until it becomes a problem. (Wheezing)

Chloe: Okay, well, give my love to connor and I hope things get better. Okay, you too. Talk soon.

Sally: How’s chelsea?

Chloe: Good. I– but wait. Are we celebrating? Tell me that you got the job at sna.

Sally: Oh, it’s not a specific job.

Chloe: But it will happen. I was just– I– I’m– I’m so glad because I was really starting to feel guilty that I was taking this gig with chelsea as her number two while she’s away with connor.

Sally: You have nothing to feel guilty about. I told you to take the job.

Chloe: I know, but you know, I– I– I was feeling bad that, you know, I was moving on and you were not.

Sally: I’m happy for you.

Chloe: And I wanna be happy for you too. So tell me everything. Is nick thrilled that you’re working for him?

Sally: Um, nick wasn’t thrilled that I didn’t immediately tell him about adam’s offer.

Chloe: But he’s okay with it now?

Sally: Honestly, the whole thing’s really complicated. Maybe more complicated than I am ready for.

Esther: Oh, hi guys. I’m so happy that you stopped by. I was just telling sharon how much I wanted to see the baby.

Mariah: Um, is my mom here?

Esther: Uh, no. She just left with nick to handle something with the new company. And I told her just to focus on c-suite business and not worry about a thing. Oh, aria is such a cutie.

Tessa: So have you started working already?

Esther: Yeah. I’m officially the new manager of crimson lights!

[ Baby cries ] Oh, gosh. Me and my big mouth. Honey, I’m so sorry. I– I scared her. I’m so sorry.

Mariah: No, esther. Esther, you’re– you’re totally fine. She’s fine.

Victor: Well, now, truth is that audra has proven herself to be very useful to the company. And she has been able to withstand adam’s threats, you know.

Nikki: She only came to you when she ran out of options.

Victor: Yeah, but the way she did it, I admire that. Maybe she’s the one I should be mentoring.

Nikki: Are you kidding me?

Victor: Why not? Look what I could do if I channel all that drive, all that ambition, all that innovative energy, my goodness.

Nikki: You will never really be able to trust audra or nate. They don’t need mentoring. They need a short leash.

Nate: And?

Audra: Well, he praised the work that I’ve been doing, guaranteed that there’ll be a spot for me at newman no matter how things fill out.

Nate: [ Laughs ] Just when I thought I couldn’t be any more impressed with you.

Audra: Well, you know, it’s not exactly what I wanted to hear. But…

Nate: You’re not just talented and ambitious. You’ve got that– that something extra.

Audra: Star quality?

Nate: Grit.

Audra: Hmm. I’ll take it.

Nate: You should.

Sharon: You told us this partnership is all you have left.

Adam: Well, you heard what nick said. I just say what people wanna hear.

Sharon: No one gave this partnership a chance in hell of working out. But it can if we stick to the original plan, co-ceos. It doesn’t matter if it’s called sna or newman media.

Nick: Sharon is right. Work with us.

Adam: Why would you even want to? I– I’ve– I’ve just been a constant source of aggravation.

Nick: Adam. Adam, you gotta let go of the past. You gotta stop feeling like you have something to prove. And let go of this ridiculous need to be in charge. Have you learned nothing from this blackmail plan? I’m telling you, you better get your ambition in check or you’re gonna destroy everything that we’ve accomplished.

Sharon: What if we back out of the whole deal, free of newman, free of victor, and especially free of adam?

Mariah: Is it treatable?

Doctor: It is treatable, yes. But there is no cure.

Ashley: [ Panting ] Did you just save my life? [ Coughing ]

Billy: Thank you very much, simone. Appreciate the tip. How’s married life?

Tucker: Oh, it’s sheer and utter bliss. I’m the luckiest man alive.

Billy: Yeah, let’s hope you deserve her.

Tucker: Your sister would definitely tell you that I do not.

Billy: My sister’s usually right. I’m actually glad I ran into you, I was– I was thinking about you and ashley, wondering what the status is about the plan for jabot.

Victor: Thank you for coming by.

Nate: Yes, I, uh, I appreciate you valuing my opinion on sharon, nick, and adam’s new company. May I speak frankly?

Victor: I want you to speak frankly.

Nate: I find their early planning to be lacking cohesion.

Victor: In what way?

Nate: Well, I read in detail the slides depicting the overall goals and direction of the company. It was as if the three co-ceos each came up with a portion of the plan and then put it all together. There’s not a lot of unity or sense of singular vision to it that I can find.

Victor: So, what do you attribute that to?

Nate: Well, I have my theory. On top of the brothers’ friction over sally spectra, adam’s focus seems to have been on one thing, newman media. Doing whatever he can to combine it with sna.

Victor: That’ll be handled.

Nate: Still, it’s created conflict and instability with sharon and nick. They don’t share his fixation.

Victor: That’s no longer an issue.

Nate: And you really trust that adam can fall in line?

Victoria: Oh, I hear congratulations are in order.

Ashley: Yes, thank you.

Victoria: Oh, yeah, sure. I guess tucker finally convinced you that he’s a changed man.

Ashley: Well, he made quite an effort to win me back when he returned.

Victoria: You know, to be honest, I didn’t think you would allow yourself to be seduced by him again. Hm. Maybe you’re the one who’s changed.

Ashley: In what way?

Victoria: You know what I also heard? I heard that you have plans to leave jabot and that you and tucker are starting a new company.

Ashley: Mm-hmm. Already in progress.

Victoria: Wow. Well, that’s quite a shift for you. You’ve reconciled with tucker and you’ve pushed your family away. This seems more like a ruthless move that tucker might make.

Ashley: Isn’t that a little extreme? Now, you’re accusing me of being ruthless?

Victoria: I don’t know. I mean, tell me, how do you see it? Are you really gonna turn your back on jabot? The family business? I mean, that’s your father’s legacy. By creating this competitive enterprise, I mean, what is the strategy with that? Are you gonna have a cosmetics war or is this just the first step in trying to get jabot away from jack? Victoria: That sounds lovely. Really, I just have a hard time believing that you would be comfortable leaving jabot behind.

Ashley: Well, I guess my priorities have shifted. What can I say? I’m in love.

Victoria: Oh, and I’m happy for you.

Ashley: Thank you so much.

Victoria: Yeah, I’m sure that jack isn’t thrilled though.

Ashley: Mm-mm.

Victoria: Yeah, I know he’s not a fan of tucker and neither is billy for that matter. I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

Ashley: Yeah, right. Yeah, it’s a bit of a sticking point for sure. You’re not wrong.

Victoria: Yeah. Well, I hope you and tucker are prepared for fireworks.

Ashley: Yeah, I think we’re gonna be okay.

Victoria: Good. You know, I’m having a similar business rivalry within my own family with adam targeting newman media. I know the kind of chaos and instability that that kind of divisiveness can cause.

Ashley: So, why are you asking me so many questions about jabot and my family? Is there something you want to know that you’re not saying?

Victoria: Look, I’m gonna be honest with you. I’m a little bit worried about how all of this affects billy. You know, he’s finally in a good place. He’s a co-ceo of jabot, seems to be in a solid relationship with chelsea. I just, um, I don’t think that, uh, he deserves to be put in the middle of some corporate or family war.

Ashley: Don’t you worry about billy. He’s exactly where he wants to be. He’s gonna be just fine.

Victoria: [ Scoffs ] That doesn’t sound very reassuring. Or is billy somehow a part of your plans?

Tucker: I assumed you figured out on your own that our plan for jabot was no longer necessary given what happened at the wedding.

Billy: Ashley seemed skeptical of jack’s wedding gift, handing back her assets and– and buying out her portion of jabot didn’t seem like enough.

Tucker: Uh, no, not really. She finally got what she wanted from jack, so she can walk away from jabot with her fair share and move on.

Billy: Just like that, huh? It seems unlikely.

Tucker: The situation has shifted dramatically, so we just don’t see the point in using you.

Billy: Well, I mean, from where I’m sitting, it hasn’t changed at all. Jack is still very much in love with diane.

Tucker: Yeah, that’s definitely not gonna–

Billy: And now, they are married, so diane is gonna do anything she can to get her seat on the board, if not more.

Tucker: Yeah, and that’s jack’s problem.

Billy: Yeah. [ Sighs ] Diane has no clue how to run jabot, okay? My family’s company is nothing more to her than an opportunity to grab more power and control, which means that the threat to my father’s legacy still very much exists. I don’t think ashley has changed her mind about that.

Tucker: But she has realized how futile it is to fight with jack when he insists on making this fatal mistake with diane.

Billy: You’re dead right about that one, tucker. This is a fatal mistake and I just don’t believe that ashley has decided that she doesn’t care about protecting my father’s legacy.

[ Tucker chuckling ]

Tucker: Billy, come on, man. This isn’t really about ashley or john abbott. I see right through you.

Billy: Is that so?

Tucker: Yeah. Hm. You were intrigued by the idea of running jabot all on your own and now you just can’t get it out of your head and now, you’re scared. Scared that maybe you missed your chance.

Nate: I don’t mean to sound flippant about adam. I know you have a soft spot for him in spite of history. Otherwise, you wouldn’t have been able to forgive him for so many things over the years.

Victor: I will always be protective of my children, no matter what.

Nate: Understood. But in my eyes, adam’s actions and attitude are detrimental to the business health of sna.

Victor: Because of his fixation with the newman media?

Nate: Yes, adam has wanted it for so long. You may think he can let go, but I’m not sure he really even can. And that’s a clear red flag of what’s to come.

Victor: You also mentioned that the issues between the two brothers could be a problem.

Nate: I don’t doubt that. Nick is at odds with adam on a daily basis and that is bad for business, especially when just getting off the ground.

Victor: Any suggestions?

Nate: Do you believe adam can be controlled? Can he ever fall in line and do what is needed to be done in order to create a successful, harmonious company?

Victor: He has done so in the past, yes.

Nate: But for how long? Will there be another newman media fixation down the line?

Victor: So, you made your thoughts about adam clear to me. What do you think about nicholas?

Nate: Nick is much more level-headed, but I’m not sure he’s forward thinking. I suspect he prefers to play things safe, take no risks, go for the sure thing.

Victor: And you don’t think that’s beneficial?

Nate: There’s nothing wrong with it if you’re already established, but sna is just coming out the gate. A new company like that demands boldness.

Victor: If you were in charge of this company, what would you do to drive it to success? Before my doctor and I chose breztri for my copd,

Nate: Adam is a wild card for sure. But I think the biggest problem with the new company is its overall structure. The merging of kirsten and mccall.

Victor: Go on.

Nate: The business structure of each entity is vastly different. Mccall’s media division is advancing quickly and many of kirsten’s platforms are already close to being obsolete. I’m sorry to say it, but it’s a short sighted merger.

Victor: Solutions?

Nate: If it were up to me, I’d strip sharon’s company down to its essentials.

Victor: And?

Nate: And we fold the new company into newman media. That’s the only move that makes sense to me. It’s good business. I know you see it, too.

Victor: So does adam.

Nate: Well, um, perhaps you prefer not to give adam that much of a win by admitting you agree or you feel that, um, sna needs more time to gain stability.

Victor: It’s possible.

Nate: There’s no doubt in my mind that sooner or later, you will bring the new company into newman to create one powerhouse. Well, um, I appreciate you allowing me to express my perspective, but, uh, something tells me that you know everything I’m telling you, which begs the question, why are you really asking me about any of this?

Ashley: I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to alarm you. As you said, billy is in a good place. I know he’ll be able to handle himself and, you know, whatever challenges might pop up at jabot.

Victoria: So, you believe there will be challenges?

Ashley: Yes, I mean, because diane has a position of power there. It might get a little bumpy sometimes. That’s all.

Victoria: And how do you see all of that playing out? You leave jabot, you become the competition, and then how do you think jack’s gonna react to that?

Ashley: Well, unfortunately, jack’s only focus these days, um, is diane and that’s why I have to step aside because, uh, now that she has this, uh, senior role there, it’s untenable for me.

Victoria: Hm. Well, you could just avoid each other.

Ashley: It’s not very realistic though, is it? So, I can’t just stand by and watch her do harm to the company, um, I have to move on.

Victoria: Doesn’t sound like you at all. Throwing in the towel, surrendering.

Ashley: Hm, c’est la vie.

Victoria: No. You love what your father built too much. You’re not gonna just walk away and let diane do damage to it. Doesn’t matter how jack claims to–

Ashley: Listen, I have done what I can to get through to my brother, okay, victoria? I’ve done whatever I can and he won’t hear it, so now I have to let go. That’s it.

Victoria: You know what? Your laissez-faire attitude doesn’t really ring true to me and if you really don’t think that there’s any impending challenges on the horizon, then why did you mention billy being able to survive one–

Ashley: What is it with billy all of a sudden? I mean, what is this? You just said that you’d let go of it.

Billy: I don’t think you know me quite as well as you think you do.

Tucker: I think I know you even better. And I’m truly sorry to have to break this sad news to you, but ashley and I have definitely decided this war with jack is just not worth it.

Billy: A week ago, ashley was determined to prove that diane was gonna destroy jabot if left to her own devices and now you’re telling me she no longer cares and all it took to give up her father’s legacy was jack giving her a portion of the company?

Tucker: She has different priorities now.

Billy: I just don’t believe it. No, I know my sister. I know how much our company means to her. It feels like more so, you are trying to ice me out.

Tucker: Why would I do that?

Billy: Because you didn’t want me part of this in the first place. And it was ashley’s idea, wasn’t it?

Tucker: Maybe. Here’s the thing, billy. I don’t think you’re trustworthy. I mean, look what you’re willing to do to your own family.

Billy: I could say the same thing about your new wife, but ashley and I agree, diane is dangerous. We also agree that jack is gonna continue to make boneheaded decisions because he is in love with diane and jabot is going to suffer because of that.

Tucker: Yeah, well, why don’t you take it up with jack?

Billy: [ Sighs ] This is very dangerous for jabot, tucker, and I’m not gonna stand for it and I think ashley knows that. And if you really cared about ashley, you would do everything you could to protect her and fix this.

Tucker: Right. Which brings us back to my original point. Amidst all this chaos, you’ve seen an opening for yourself and you think, “she’s with jack so punch drunk in love, I would be much better suited to run jabot,” right? Then, you’d have total control, total autonomy.

Billy: Whatever it takes to make things balanced again, I will do.

Tucker: [ Laughs ] Right. That’s very noble of you. Well, if that’s the case, you’ll have to figure out on your own how to dethrone diane. All right. Hey, adam.

[ Adam clears his throat ] Wow. No, no, no. Come on.

Adam: Hm?

Tucker: No, just come here. I just– I’m just absolutely astonished that your ego can handle being out in public after your most recent failure. That was an epic one.

Adam: Yeah, uh, I’ve had a few failures lately. You’re gonna have to be more specific.

Tucker: Uh, audra thwarting your blackmail attempts and being busted by big daddy himself.

Adam: Yeah, uh, you– well, you can’t win them all, you know? Shouldn’t you get back to celebrating the fact that you fooled ashley into thinking you were a changed man?

Tucker: My friend, my whole world is a celebration. Everything. It’s just– everything’s coming up roses. You, on the other hand.

Adam: You know I still have those emails, so maybe I will let that evidence slip out just to wipe that smile off your face.

Tucker: I don’t think you’d be that foolish.

Adam: You think? I mean, I’m a screw up and I always will be, right? You ever think about that?

Tucker: No, no, the negative press would not be good for a company you now own. And nick and sharon would be none too pleased and that would, uh– it would put you in even less good favor with your old man than you already are, don’t you think?

Adam: I’m pretty confident sna would survive, but you probably wouldn’t and that would be totally worth the risk.

Billy: Gentlemen. Hey. What’s going on?

Ashley: You’re still so protective of billy. You’re not having any regrets that things didn’t work out for you two, are you?

Victoria: Billy and i have both moved on. Things have happened that we can’t come back from.

Ashley: Well, I’m kind of sad that things didn’t work out for you. I mean, I know you and I haven’t always gotten along, but I thought you were kind of good for billy.

Victoria: I don’t have any regrets at all. We’re better off apart. That way we can focus on what’s really important, johnny and katie.

Ashley: Hm, well, you know how life is. Who knows, right? You might see things differently down the line.

Victoria: Would you be straight with me? Is billy involved in something that has to do with your departure from jabot?

Ashley: [ Laughs ] What is with you today? You just said that you had let him go and moved on.

Victoria: Yeah, billy and i are not together anymore, but we share children. I care about him just like I know he cares about me, and if he’s involved, if he’s in some kind of trouble, I’d like to know about it.

Ashley: Everything is going to be okay for billy, all right? He’s okay, I’m okay, we are all okay. And, um, it’s been a lot of fun but, um, I gotta go.

Adam: Well, you can always count on billy to stick his nose in where it doesn’t belong.

Billy: [ Laughs ] Well, some would say I’m reliable that way. So, is anyone gonna answer me? What’s going on?

Adam: He was just giving me a hard time about how I’m choosing to run his company.

Tucker: Hm, yeah, that’s what’s going on.

[ Tucker chuckles ] All right. Night, guys.

Billy: Night, tucker.

[ Billy sighs ] Glad I ran into you, actually.

Adam: Yeah?

Tucker: Um, how are chelsea and connor? You talk to them?

Adam: Yeah, I’ve been in contact with chelsea. I was gonna call my son when I got home, but they did have a successful visit at the therapeutic school that connor found.

Billy: Good. I’m happy to hear that.

Adam: Yeah. There was an immediate opening, so they did decide to stay. They’re already getting settled in at anita’S.

Billy: That’s great. I will, uh, I’ll reach out to her in the morning.

Adam: I’m sure she would like that.

Billy: Look, I, uh, I’m sorry about all of this stuff that’s going on with conor and I’m glad he’s getting the help that he needs, but I can only imagine how difficult this must be for you.

Adam: Well, thanks. Although I’m sure your concern is only partially sincere.

Billy: What do you mean by that?

Adam: Well, you’re trying to put me at ease because you want to fish for information about tucker. That’s what you’re really after, right?

Nate: If I offended you, I– I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to overstep by questioning your motives.

Victor: You didn’t overstep at all. Hi, son.

Nick: Hello. Sorry if I’m intruding.

Victor: Nate was just on his way out.

Nate: Thank you, victor.

Victor: Thank you. You have a good night.

Nate: Good night.

Nick: What was that about?

Victor: I invited nate to give me his perspective on the sna business plan.

Nick: Why would you do that? Is this about adam? Is he on the chopping block again? Are you thinking about replacing adam with nate? Because if that’s the case, I will not work alongside that guy. With moderate to severe plaque psoriasis,

Ashley: What is it? What’s wrong?

Billy: Well, I’m really sorry that you feel that way, adam. Honestly, I have no idea what you’re talking about. I’m not working with tucker. I don’t know if you know this, but we don’t like each other all that much.

Adam: Yeah, well, I suspect that you dislike diane more. You know, the enemy of my enemy and all that. It can’t sit well with you that jack went ahead and married her.

Billy: Jack knows how the family feels about diane and he’s choosing not to listen to our opinions, so it’s not worth the fight.

Adam: I’m not just talking about her place in the family. I mean, don’t you think it’s crossed jack’s mind to replace you with diane as co-ceo?

Billy: No.

Adam: The idea is appealing enough that it probably crossed jack’s mind. Diane and jack abbott, side by side running jabot and that would be a slap in the face to you and you’d be on the outside of the family.

Billy: Jeez, man, remind me to never show you any compassion again.

Adam: I’m showing concern right now.

Billy: Adam, you don’t have a concerned bone in your body or a trusting one. I mean, you see the world through this web of deception and that’s how you– you see life now. That’s how you see everyone.

Adam: Okay. Now, I know you’re fishing for information about tucker.

Billy: Okay, let’s play this little game then. Okay, so let’s just say I am, hypothetically. What does that matter to you?

Adam: I would say that I might have information that tucker would never want revealed, the details of which that would knock him down a few notches.

Billy: Everybody’s gotten an opinion or information on tucker. What makes yours any different?

Adam: It is the damaging gun. And, hypothetically speaking, I might be willing to sell it to somebody if they could do me a favor.

Billy: Well, I’d be surprised if that information was so damning that it would get under your skin in that way.

Adam: Well, then I guess we’re out of hypotheticals, but if you ever want to have this conversation again, I’m around, billy.

Victor: For your information, no one is on the chopping block, all right? I was simply looking for another perspective.

Nick: But why go to nate for that? His view on sna is completely irrelevant.

Victor: He made some very good points. He thinks that kirsten incorporated will be obsolete within ten years.

Nick: Yes, sharon and i have talked about that at great length. We are prepared to update anything that is antiquated, but it is a non-issue. If you had some concerns about that, you should have come to us. Why would you need to go to nate for his take on the business plan?

Victor: Your views of nate hastings are clouding your judgment.

Nick: I know you too well. There’s something else at play here. Is it adam? Is it me? Are you questioning my work? Or sharon’s?

Victor: His evaluation of your company with sharon and adam was right on. I agree with his assessment.

Nick: Oh, he plays the game well, I’ll admit that, but do not fall for his calm demeanor or business savvy. At the end of the day, he will stab any one of us in the back to get ahead, including victoria.

Victoria: Billy. Hi. It’s me. Um, I’m hoping that we can get together tomorrow morning to discuss something. It’s about your family. So, just let me know, please. Thanks.

Nate: You seem concerned. Is everything all right?

Victoria: Yeah, there just seems to be some trouble brewing over a jabot and billy might get caught in the middle.

Nate: It’s nice of you to be so caring towards your ex. Are you gonna worry about me that way if we, uh, ever break up?

Victoria: It’s hardly the same thing and you know it.

Nate: I’m sorry. Um… I didn’t mean to upset you, especially now that you’ve agreed to forgive and trust me again.

Victoria: Um… I apologize for snapping. It’s not you. I just– I had this really odd and disconcerting encounter with ashley abbott.

Nate: I’m sorry it upset you.

[ Victoria sighing ]

Victoria: And also, I’m– it’s been a long day. I’m just tired. I want to go home and take a nice long, hot bath and have a big glass of wine and unwind before bed.

Nate: That sounds fantastic. I wish I could join you, but I get the sense that we’re not at the stage where you’re ready to have me at your actual home.

[ Victoria sighing ]

Victoria: I appreciate you understanding.

Nate: If you don’t mind, may I alter your plans slightly by adding dinner beforehand?

Victoria: That sounds lovely. I see that you are in a good mood. I assume that has something to do with your meeting with my father?

Nate: Honestly, I don’t know how I feel. It was either the best meeting or the worst. I can’t figure out what he’s up to.

Victor: Hello, sharon.

Sharon: Hello. I got here as soon as I could. What’s going on?

Nick: I have no idea, but I have a suspicion this has something to do with nate.

Victor: Hello, son.

Adam: What’s going on?

Victor: Thank you all for coming on such short notice, but I have some thoughts about your new company and some changes will be made.

Tucker: I’m fine. I’m excited because we’re gearing up to cut the ties of the bind. Make a fresh start. Right? How are you?

Ashley: I’m okay. I mean, I had a weird conversation with victoria. Kind of got me thinking about our future and things.

Tucker: Not second thoughts, I hope.

Ashley: No, I mean, I love you, you know that. And I know my brain is telling me that it’s the right thing to do to step away from jabot and let diane and jack think that I’m through with them and the company.

Tucker: I thought you were through with them. I thought it was live and let live, is that not the plan now? I thought we were going to focus on us. Am I sensing hesitation here?

Ashley: It’s just not that easy, you know, when I’m staring at it in the face now. It’s right there. It’s my family. You know I know my father’s company. I’ve spent months trying to protect them from diane, you know?

Tucker: Right. And where has that gotten you?

Ashley: Just listen, okay? Please. Okay, so if I back away from this battle and I leave billy here to fight the whole thing on his own, right, he’s gonna push diane to the point where the company collapses. Doesn’t that seem kind of ruthless to you? I mean, if I’m capable of doing something like that, then hasn’t diane beaten me? I can’t let her win.

[ Tucker scoffs softly ]

Billy: Jack?

Jack: Hey.

Billy: Hey, thanks for getting back to my text. This can’t wait.

Jack: So, what happened? The text said you saw tucker?

Billy: I did, yeah. I wanted to check in and, you know, get the status of what his and ashley’s plans are for jabot.

[ Billy sighs deeply ] It seems like their surrender is real. Sounds like they’re giving up the fight.

Jack: Do you believe him?

Billy: I believe that tucker wants to move on, yeah, but I– I don’t buy that ashley does. I just– I think that the family company is too important to her.

Jack: I can’t help but wonder if this is another diversion, an effort on their part to put us at ease before the next onslaught.

Billy: It feels like there’s something else coming, yeah. I also picked up on something between adam and tucker.

Jack: What, a collusion?

Billy: More like a conflict. I– I walked in on them having a heated discussion and, uh, when I pushed adam on it, he says he has information on tucker, the kind of information that tucker wants to keep secret.

Jack: Wait, why would adam reveal that to you?

Billy: He wants to trade it for something else. (Wheezing)

Tucker: But diane is not going to win. You know that and I know that and she won’t need your help to lose. She won’t need billy’s help. Why is this still an issue?

Ashley: You know how important this is to me. We’re talking about my father’s legacy.

Tucker: Yes, I know, but I thought you were… I thought we agreed you were not going to try to fight a useless, unwinnable war. How many times do I have to tell you this, ashley? You don’t need jabot, you don’t need jack.

Ashley: I’m walking away from my family, tucker.

Tucker: I’m your family, too! And this obsession you have with jack and diane and jabot, it’s– it has for months gotten in the way of us.

Ashley: Yeah, I don’t like it when you– you label this as an obsession that I have.

Tucker: Well, I don’t know what else to call it. I don’t understand. A couple of days ago you were– all you wanted to do was walk away.

Ashley: Okay, but you know what? If we can’t talk about this as a couple, then what do we have? Where are we exactly if we can’t talk to each other about this?

Tucker: You’re right. I’m sorry. I know how difficult this is for you. You know, I applaud your strength, really. I marvel at it. But I just wish you could take some of it and direct it our way.

[ Tucker sighing ] I just wish you could focus on us a little bit, and just let everything else take care of itself. And it will. I swear.

Jack: So, what does adam want from us? What is it he thinks we have?

Billy: I don’t know. It’s adam, so I’m gonna assume that he’s playing games.

Jack: I sense there’s more to it.

Billy: Look, I’m concerned about what ashley and tucker are up to, okay? And now my opportunity to find out what that is from the inside, that door has been slammed shut.

Jack: You think they’re onto our charade? Maybe they just don’t trust you anymore?

Billy: No, I don’t think that’s what it is. I think I’ve played my part perfectly. It was that moment that you gave ashley her part of the company. That’s what threw the game off kilter.

Jack: Or maybe that put the brakes on everything. Yeah. Even the score. That’s what ashley wanted all along. Now that she has it, we can all move on with our lives and this messy war.

Billy: Yeah. I guess so.

Jack: You don’t seem too pleased with that. Why is that? It’s almost like you’re disappointed that we won’t have this battle to fight anymore.

Nate: I gave victor my assessment of sna. I pointed out the weaknesses in the business plan, mostly stemming from adam’s obsessive focus on taking back newman media and that’s really all about getting back at you.

Victoria: Adam’s capacity for revenge is never ending. It’s one of his greatest failings. Did my father agree with you?

Nate: Victor seemed very interested in my opinions. He even went so far as to ask me how I would handle things if I were in charge.

Victoria: Well, he wouldn’t have asked you that question if he wasn’t entertaining the possibility or had some other angle. I think my father definitely has a plan that involves you, one that might take you away from working at newman enterprises.

Nate: Away from you.

Victoria: Which I will not condone.

Nate: Do you think he’s considering putting me in charge of sna?

Victoria: Hm. I wouldn’t dream quite so big. More than likely, he wants to replace adam with you, which would put you on an equal level with nick and sharon.

Nate: I don’t know. I get the feeling that victor’s starting to believe there’s too many cooks in the kitchen over there.

[ Victoria chuckling ] That the company needs a strong, singular leader.

Victoria: Yes, but it’s unlikely that he would offer that title to you.

Nate: But what if he did? If victor were to offer me the sole position, would you try to block the move?

Victoria: You know, if I didn’t know better, I would think that maybe you’re trying to play me for a promotion here.

Victor: My first instinct was to watch your newly developed company perform.

Adam: Mm-hmm. You’ve given us three months to do that.

Victor: That is true. I’ve changed my mind. We’re going with your plan. We’re going to fold sna into newman media.

Adam: [ Laughs ] Now– now that you’ve considered it, my idea was a good one?

Victor: That’s right.

Adam: Hmm. [ Clears throat ] Dad, um, it’s never that simple with you. I mean, after the hell that you rain down on me, I don’t believe that you just changed your mind because I said so. So, what really changed your mind, dad?

Mariah: What a lovely afternoon.

Tessa: I’m glad that you’re enjoying your last day as a lady of leisure. Could be a while before you just sit and enjoy the sun.

Mariah: Did you hear that, aria? Mommy thinks that hanging out with you and working at jabot is leisure, and my new job is gonna be so much harder. She’s so funny, isn’t she? She backs me up.

Tessa: Mama is gonna be working at sna, which is basically a startup, which means it’s gonna take up a lot more time and brain space, because you want it to be successful, because you are brilliant, because it means so much to sharon.

Mariah: It means a lot to me too. You know, I’m selfishly excited.

Tessa: Well, you are, and I am excited for you.

Mariah: So, do you think you’re gonna survive at marchetti without me in the same building?

Tessa: Oh, I am so glad that I’m gonna have some space between us.

Mariah: You know what? That was rude.

[ Tessa laughs ]

Tessa: No, because I can focus on my modeling work and not be thinking about how I can sneak away to your office and spend a little time behind closed doors with you.

Mariah: Well, I’m not gonna tell aria that.

[ Thunder rumbling ] Oh, wow.

Mariah: That was incredibly loud.

Tessa: Just when we got aria to go to sleep. Oh. The thunder didn’t wake her up. She’s still asleep.

Mariah: Yeah, I guess she’s– she’s really out. But that was very loud.

Tessa: Yeah.

Sharon: Esther, hi.

Esther: Hi, sharon. Hi.

Sharon: Thank you for coming by. I hate to bother you on a weekday, but I’m sure devon and lily do give you an occasional break.

Esther: Oh, they are the best bosses. But– but no one can top mrs. Chancellor.

Sharon: Mrs. Chancellor, of course.

Esther: Yeah.

Sharon: Well, esther, I don’t know if you’ve heard, but nick, adam, and I are going to be running a new media company together.

Esther: Yeah, I did hear. That’s so exciting! Well, you’re gonna have your plate full with the business and– and crimson lights.

Sharon: Yes, I am going to be very busy, which is why I asked you to come over today.

Esther: Oh?

Sharon: Yeah, I have a proposition for you. Um, this new company is gonna need to take most of my focus, and I’m really not ready to let go of crimson lights. It’s just such a big part of me. So I thought that maybe the next best thing would be to find someone to manage it for me.

Esther: Mm-hmm.

Sharon: Someone I can count on, someone who’s good with people, has an eye for detail. Someone who’s maybe worked here before and knows how we do things around here? Does that… sound like anyone you know?

Sally: Well, it worked, right?

Nick: What worked?

Sally: I successfully distracted you from adam and everything he’s up to, not to mention your father and his mind games.

Nick: You, sexy lady, can distract me from pretty much anything.

Sally: Well, what do you say we continue this back in my suite?

Nick: I’d like that very much.

[ Sally chuckles ]

Kyle: I, uh– summer.

Summer: Hi. Uh, I wa– I was at the house earlier. Harrison’s really excited about the school year.

Kyle: Yeah. He loves the special notebook and colored pencils you got him.

Summer: He is so proud of being able to write his name.

Kyle: And he’s convinced he can read now that he’s memorized three bumpy the camel books.

Summer: Well, you know, that is reading, sort of.

Kyle: Yeah. Let’s go with that.

Summer: So… we should stop this.

Kyle: Stop what?

Summer: I think it’s time, kyle. For a divorce. Are you tired of clean clothes that just don’t smell clean?

Mariah: Heat lightning. We should get indoors.

Tessa: Yes. Absolutely.

Mariah: That’S…

Tessa: How is she sleeping through all of this?

Mariah: Hey. Aria. Aria. Hi!

[ Aria wailing ] Oh…

Tessa: Oh, wow. Listen to that.

Mariah: Yeah.

Tessa: Our child has got a set of lungs on her.

Mariah: See, she’s fine. Everything’s fine.

Tessa: But we panicked and woke her up.

Mariah: Yeah, we’re new mothers. That’s what we do.

Tessa: Isn’t it weird though? That the thunder isn’t fazing her at all?

Mariah: Uh, I mean, it’s like the other day when you dropped all the utensils on the floor. I mean, I was scared, I was upstairs, and she was right there.

Tessa: So she has a tolerance for loud, scary noises?

Mariah: Maybe her birth mom was around loud noises and she just got used to it.

Tessa: Hmm.

[ Thunder rumbling ] Okay.

Mariah: Yeah.

Tessa: I hate that sound.

Mariah: All right.

Tessa: Sorry. So much for a glorious day.

Mariah: That’s fine. Let’s go.

Esther: You’re talking about me? You want me to manage crimson lights?

Sharon: I kind of thought it might be the perfect job, but I know that being at chancellor-winters means a lot to you, the connection with katherine.

Esther: Well, mrs. C was family, and that means devon’s family, and I was thrilled when he wanted me to be part of the company with lily, and being able to, uh, bug jill once in a while.

[ Laughs ] Had a friend benefit. But now that I’ve been there a while, there are some things that I don’t like.

Sharon: Like what?

Esther: Well, when I took the job of a receptionist at chancellor-winters, I– I– I thought that I would be able to talk to a lot of people, that employees and clients would be coming in for meetings. But now it just turns out that there’s just video conferences and texts and people are calling on their cell phone all the time and working from home is the thing, and, well, I just wanted more human interaction.

Sharon: Well, there are plenty of people coming in and out of here every day, and they do have to talk to you if they wanna eat or drink.

Esther: Well, yeah, I mean, they wanna be alone or else bond with a friend and order a triple shot cappuccino with cinnamon.

Sharon: Exactly. Right? See, you know, you used to work here. You know the ins and outs of this place.

Esther: Oh, yeah, I remember, I really did like being here. I got to see everyone I knew pretty much all the time.

Sharon: Well, esther, I’m not trying to give you a hard sell. I just thought that the manager role could be perfect for you.

Esther: Yeah, it seems like it.

Sharon: So?

Esther: Well, of course, I– I’d have to check with devon and lily, and– and make sure they could have someone, like, there when I’m here. But when I can figure that out, well, then, well, yeah, of course I accept.

Sharon: Great. When can you start?

[ Sighs ]

Adam: Top floor. That is a hell of a view. And we are just as high as you are, pop. Hell, I bet we could see newman tower from the executive suite. Yep. That’s perfect.

Kyle: Uh, divorce?

Summer: Why are you acting surprised? Kyle, I feel like you’ve made it really clear to me that this is what you want.

Kyle: Yeah, I guess I just didn’t expect you to be the one to say it first.

Summer: We’re in this limbo, right? And it’s not good for us and it’s not good for harrison. Somebody had to say it. I mean, I– I’ve accepted the fact that you– you don’t wanna try and repair our marriage. I mean, you haven’t reached out to me at all lately. I mean, not even about harrison, any conversation that we’ve had about him, I’ve had to initiate.

Kyle: Oh, summer, that’s not–

Summer: Kyle, I’m not trying to criticize you. I’m just saying that we’re in this limbo and we need to get out of it. And the way to do that is to formalize our separation, make it permanent.

Nick: Uh, hold on a second.

Sally: What’s wrong?

Nick: It, uh, looks pretty intense over there.

Sally: Do you need to go see if they’re okay?

Nick: Yeah. Um, why don’t you go upstairs? I’ll be up there in a minute. I just wanna make sure she’s okay.

Sally: Okay.

Nick: All right.

Kyle: Well, summer–

Nick: Well, hi, you two. Looks like you’re talking. That’s got to be a good thing. Or… not.

Summer: We’re fine. We’re just–

Kyle: We’re just discussing harrison’s future.

Nick: Kyle, would you mind if I talk to you alone for a minute? Having diabetes can raise a lot of questions.

Esther: Well, actually, I should be able to start fairly soon. Um, but just let me make sure with devon and lily that there’s someone able to step in to cover me on the reception desk on the days that I’m here, okay?

Sharon: Perfect. Oh, look who’s here.

Esther: Hi, ladies.

Mariah: Hey, guys!

Esther: Oh, I haven’t met this little one yet.

Mariah: Well, esther, meet aria.

Esther: Oh, such a cutie. Oh, my gosh. She’ll be the love of your life.

[ All chuckling ] Okay, sharon, we’ll talk soon.

Sharon: Yes, we will, crimson lights’ new manager.

Esther: Yes.

Mariah: Oh, my goodness! Esther is your new manager?

Sharon: Yeah, she is.

Mariah: Well, she’s a great choice.

Tessa: Yeah, she’s worked here before, right?

Sharon: For a little while. Yeah. A lot’s happened here since nick and I bought the place back in the day. Mostly good things. Cassie sure loved this place. And I know that esther is gonna give crimson lights the care it deserves.

[ Phone ringing ]

[ Sally sighs ]

Sally: Adam?

Adam: Sally. Hey, guess what I’m looking at right now.

Sally: Uh, no idea.

Adam: I am looking at a photo of sna’s new offices, and they are spectacular.

Sally: Why are you calling me to tell me this?

Adam: Because I know that you would love the view. So you should reconsider my job offer and you should say yes this time.

Summer: Dad, everything’s fine. You don’t need to get involved.

Nick: It’s just a friendly man-to-man chat. Kyle, you’re cool with that, right?

Kyle: Of course.

Summer: Okay. I just wanna state for the record that I’m not asking either of you to do this.

Nick: Understood.

Kyle: No problem.

[ Summer sighs ]

Nick: Let’s get a drink. A couple of beers, please.

[ Kyle sighs ] We, uh, haven’t really had a chance to talk since you and summer split up.

Kyle: Yeah, I was sorry to hear about faith being kidnapped by that lunatic and sally losing her baby. What you’ve been through sounds like hell.

Nick: Yeah, it’s been a rough couple of months for a lot of us. Look, kyle, um, my daughter crossed the line, there’s no doubt about that. Her knowing that phyllis was alive and not telling anyone while your mother was in custody for her murder is just… it’s completely wrong, and who wouldn’t be upset by it?

Kyle: She broke my trust.

Nick: I know.

Kyle: Yeah, she was the one person I believe would never lie to me, and– and… well, the lie doesn’t get much bigger than the one that put my mother behind bars. What if we never found out the truth? My mother could be serving a life sentence right now.

Nick: Well, I highly doubt summer would have ever let it get to that point.

Kyle: We’ll never know. Will we?

[ Nick sighs ]

Nick: Look, um– thank you. My daughter’s heart was broken. Yeah, I know yours is too. But underneath all that hurt, there has got to still be some love there. I mean, you and summer are great together. I know you can work this out.

Kyle: You’ve had relationships end, right?

[ Nick laughs ]

Nick: Uh, yeah.

Kyle: Was all the love gone there every time, or did the reasons you break up have nothing to do with love and everything to do with betrayal?

Nick: I regretted a lot of those. It was a big mistake for both of us. God, when I look at you two, I remember the way you looked at each other during your vow renewal. I see this perfect little family that you and summer and harrison have built. You’ve been through so much. You have known each other for so long. It just– it can’t be the end of it.

Kyle: Unless it is.

Nick: Summer made a terrible mistake. A tragically awful mistake. But it– it can’t permanently destroy one of the most solid couples I’ve ever seen. Can it? I’m jonathan lawson

Tessa: Uh, you know, there is a former barista that would be happy to step in and help her mother-in-law.

Sharon: Oh, thank you, tessa. I really appreciate that. You know, I might end up calling you, but I think right now you have a lot on your plate with marchetti and things at home. You too, mariah.

Mariah: I am very excited to start working for you.

Sharon: Oh, my gosh. I hope you still feel that way after you hear my long list of ideas, starting with this splashy launch. It’s gonna need a lot of publicity, because I want us to make our mark right out of the gate.

Mariah: Well, good, because I have music, fashion, and influencers who are already in waiting to get to know the new sna media powerhouse.

[ Thunder rumbling ]

Sharon: Goodness.

Mariah: She’s still asleep.

Sharon: What’s wrong? Is aria afraid of the noise?

Mariah: No, not at all. That’s– it’s nothing. We’re just being paranoid.

Sharon: Oh, well, that would be a first in the history of the world.

Mariah: Yes, I know. We’re probably overreacting.

Sharon: Okay. Why don’t you tell me what’s really got you worried?

Tessa: Well, um, we were in the park and aria was asleep, and then there was a big clap of thunder.

Mariah: Yeah, it was loud. I mean, it scared even us. Uh, but aria didn’t wake up.

Sharon: Well, maybe she was just in a deep sleep.

Mariah: Yeah, see, that’s exactly what I said. You know, then it seemed to get louder and still nothing.

Tessa: It was only when mariah touched her, just barely touching her chest just to check that she woke up and started crying.

Mariah: So, of course, like we do every single day, you know, we started thinking that something could be wrong.

Sharon: And what do you think it may be?

Sally: Adam, I really appreciate the offer, but there are multiple reasons why me working for you and nick and sharon is not the best idea.

Adam: Well, you’re gonna have to list these multiple reasons, because I just don’t see it.

Sally: Are you still planning on going after newman media?

Adam: No, I’ve– uh, I’ve let the merger idea go.

Sally: I– I’m glad to hear it.

[ Sighs ] Look, there has been conflict aside from that, and I just feel like me working for the company might bring even more.

Adam: You’re referring to nick and me. My brother and I are fine.

Sally: Look, I– I just am not up for anything other than a pleasant, stable work environment right now.

Adam: This will be that. Okay? We will get there. Look, how about we meet tomorrow and we talk about it?

Sally: Adam–

Adam: You’re not working– no, you’re not– you don’t trust me, but you trust nick. So don’t take this job for my sake. Why don’t you take it for yours and nick’s?

Sally: Fine. Fine. But I’m not making any promises, so please do not get your hopes up.

Adam: Fair enough.

Kyle: I’m sorry, nick, but I’m done. I can’t find a way to forgive summer, and honestly, you shouldn’t ask me to.

Nick: I think she deserves another chance.

Kyle: No, she doesn’T. Summer’s betrayal of me, of my mother, it– it’s too big. It’s massive. Look, I thought with more time that we’d find a way to get past it. For harrison’s sake, if nothing else. But I can’T.

Nick: It hasn’t been that long.

Kyle: It’s been long enough, and it hurts now as much as it did when I first found out she was lying to me about phyllis, and I see it now very clearly. Summer is more like phyllis than I ever imagined.

Nick: That is a huge exaggeration.

Kyle: Is it?

Nick: Look, summer did some pretty wild things when she was young. I mean, so did you. What kid doesn’t? But she’s not like that anymore, all right? She has grown up. She’s a very smart, very kind, beautiful young woman. One I’m extremely proud of. Now make no mistake, I know that’s partly because of you. Her confidence, her maturity, her ability to be so good with harrison. It’s because of that connection that you have, kyle. It’s because of your love. Don’t you see that?

Kyle: Okay, let’s say that is true. I owe it to the world to stay with summer because she’s more mature now? Look, she hasn’t grown up enough not to lie.

[ Nick sighs ] Okay, sorry, nick, but no. Look, phyllis, she will never change. She’s not capable. And I now feel the same way about summer. She’s the same woman that blackmailed me in a marriage to save lola’s life.

Nick: She’s different now. That is my point. Come on, man.

Kyle: Okay, let’s say I do give my marriage a second chance. I would be waiting every day, every week, every year for a shoe to drop. And eventually it would. Our mothers will keep fighting, for sure, 100%. So family harmony is impossible, and I don’t want that for harrison. I don’t want that for myself.

Nick: So there’s nothing I can say.

Kyle: No. Mm-mmm. Look, I don’t wanna live like this anymore. Summer told me earlier she doesn’t either. She’s ready to move on from this limbo that we’re in.

Nick: She said that?

Kyle: She said she’s ready to move forward with a divorce.

Nick: She doesn’t mean that, kyle. I know my daughter, and it’s not what is in her heart.

[ Summer exhales ]

[ Sobbing ]

[ Sniffling ]

Mariah: I guess we were just wondering if it’s normal for her to not react to loud sounds.

Tessa: It’s not just the thunder. The other day I knocked over a utensil container in the kitchen, and it was loud, and mariah, who was all the way upstairs, heard it and ran down just to make sure everyone was okay.

Mariah: Yeah, and when I came downstairs, aria was still fast asleep in her playpen. Uh, she didn’t react at all.

Sharon: Well, it’s– what I’m saying is she’s a deep sleeper. You know, faith was that way.

Tessa: Yeah?

Sharon: Yeah. Don’t you remember, mariah, that time she was supposed to get up and go meet you for breakfast, but then you came over, she was still in bed asleep? How hard it was to wake her up?

Mariah: Uh, yeah, that’s true.

Sharon: She’s even had me call her at school a few times because she was afraid that she would sleep through her alarm and miss her exams.

Tessa: But isn’t aria old enough to be reacting when we call her name? I mean, isn’t that one of the milestones?

Sharon: Girls, relax. Okay? Your beautiful daughter is fine. You’re scaring yourself for no reason. There is no set date for when babies are supposed to do things.

Mariah: Yeah, we know that. Right? We know that. I mean, that’s what we’re always telling ourselves when we’re with other moms and they’re talking about their genius children.

Sharon: Okay, but if you really are worried that there’s something wrong with aria’s hearing, take her in to the doctor and have her tested. That’s easy enough, and it may set your minds at ease.

[ Adam sighing ]

Adam: It is a new day, dad, and now I’m gonna show you what I’m made of.

Sally: Are things any better between summer and kyle?

Nick: Apparently not. Uh… summer’s talking divorce.

Sally: Um, would she really give up on her marriage that easily?

Nick: No, she wouldn’T. And I don’t care if she brought that up to kyle. She doesn’t mean it, she’s just heartbroken.

Sally: Kyle’s had a hard time dealing with what summer did. But, I mean, does he really want it to be over over?

Nick: I mean, he seems pretty set on moving on and making this split permanent. He doesn’t care that summer feels terribly for choosing her mother over their marriage. Phyllis put her in an impossible situation, and this is the fallout.

Sally: Well, how did you react to that? I mean, did you put the fear of god in him?

Nick: No. It was tempting. I just wanna grab him by the shoulders and shake some sense into him and tell him that he is making a huge mistake. He’s giving up the best thing that ever happened to him.

Sally: You held back.

Nick: This is not my fight. It’s hard… because I just wanna take my little girl’s pain away. What’s wrong?

Sally: You just would have been the best bonus dad to ava.

[ Summer sighs ]

Sally: I’m so sorry. I know that you were talking about summer and her heart break, and I just made this all about me.

Nick: Nothing to be sorry about. You’re grieving. And sometimes that’s the way grief works. I want you to know, I think you’re doing great. I’m proud of you.

Sally: Thank you for understanding.

Nick: But you are right. I would have done everything I could… to be the best daddy in the world to your daughter. Maybe someday I’ll have another chance.

Sally: Wait. Are you saying that you want to have a kid with me?

Sharon: Yes. That’s right. That is, yes. Tomorrow? Okay. Thank you so much.

Mariah: We’re just being ridiculous. Right?

Tessa: I don’t know. Yes. Yes, we are. We are just jumping to conclusions because our baby doesn’t startle at every single sound.

Mariah: Yeah, I– I– I mean, she could just be a very deep sleeper like sharon said.

Tessa: Or our hearing is more sensitive than hers.

Mariah: I– I guess.

Tessa: I don’t know. We’re– we’re first time moms, we don’t know anything.

Mariah: We are freaking out for nothing. I mean, they tested her hearing at the hospital. It was fine.

Tessa: Yes. Right. Right. Right.

Mariah: It’s fine.

Sharon: Okay. Aria has an appointment with her pediatrician first thing tomorrow.

Tessa: Sharon–

Sharon: You may or may not have taken that step yourselves.

Mariah: She knows us very well.

Sharon: I don’t wanna see you girls driving yourself crazy. Just go see the doctor, have the test done, find out everything is fine, and then you can move on to worrying about something else.

Mariah: Why? Is there something else we should be worrying about?

Sharon: No, I was speaking in general, mariah. My granddaughter is fine.

Mariah: Yes. Yes, she is. Thank you so much, mom.

Sharon: Sure. Don’t worry, you girls.

Nick: Well, don’t sound so relieved.

[ Both chuckling ] Look, I’m not saying that, um, you know, us having a kid is something we should be talking about. I’m also not not saying that.

Sally: [ Chuckles ] Okay.

Nick: Look, if we ever got to the point, you know, for us, and that was something that we both wanted… I’d be excited. I’d love to have a kid with you because I know that you will be an amazing mother.

[ Phone chimes ]

[ Sighs ] Will you marry me? Again?

[ Summer laughs ]

Summer: This is bliss. Just the two of us, the quiet interlude before the wonderful mayhem of our vow renewal tomorrow.

Kyle: I don’t know what’s real with you anymore.

Summer: Kyle, wait. I’m just trying–

Kyle: I don’t– I don’t need anything from you, summer. I wish you the best with your choices, because I’m doing just fine with mine.

Summer: There never was any hope for us.

Kyle: I guess not. So, we’re done here.

Nikki: Hello.

Victor: Oh. Hello, my sweet baby.

Nikki: How are you?

Victor: All right, darling. Sit down. So, wait a minute, your meeting was more successful than you expected, right?

Nikki: Who have you been talking to?

Victor: You have a whole walk and look of a predator who had a successful hunt.

Nikki: Oh.

Victor: Yeah.

Nikki: Well, um, how has your day been going so far?

Victor: Well, I had a visit with our new coo.

Nikki: Oh, well, I’m sure nate came hat in hand, very apologetic.

Victor: Well, he explained his actions.

Nikki: Really?

Victor: Yeah.

Nikki: I think that would be hard to explain away seeing as he went directly against your wishes.

Victor: Well, he was trying to, you know, prevent newman enterprises from suffering an embarrassment.

Nikki: And he lied to victoria.

Victor: Well, he mostly did that to protect victoria.

[ Nikki scoffing ] Yeah. Anyway, this is all adam’s fault, you know. He defied my wishes. He actually used blackmail, and I need to keep him in place just for the sake of the optics. But don’t think I have any illusions about not expecting trouble from his side.

Nikki: Well, I’ll tell you this, nicholas and sharon aren’t going to put up with that. They will push back and keep him in check.

Victor: They’ll try.

Nikki: [ Sighing ] So, what’s your next move?

Victor: I enlisted nate.

Nikki: To do what?

Nick: Adam, I’m doing everything I can to make our venture work.

Adam: Well, I need it to work.

Nick: But everything you’re doing keeps putting it in jeopardy.

Adam: Nick, from a business perspective, joining with newman media makes sense.

Nick: So you resort a blackmail to make it happen. Just so you know, I was able to get every single one of mccall’s foreign divisions to be excited about us in the direction we’re going, just in case you were interested.

Adam: Well, I’ve been dealing with a family matter. Connor has been struggling.

Nick: I’m very sorry to hear that. He’s a great kid. But despite that, adam, you were still able to find time to dig up dirt on tucker.

Adam: Listen to me. It’s over.

Nick: It’s not over. It is never over with you. You know, dad was able to secure financing for S.N.A. Media under the premise that you were going to be a part of it. So, we’re stuck with you.

Adam: Look, all this anger that you’ve been carrying around for months, it shouldn’t be directed at me.

Nick: Really?

Adam: Not all of it. I assume that you know what dad did to sally by offering her a great opportunity at newman, even finding her a replacement at chancellor-winters, and then, sorry, not happening.

Nick: Yeah, sally told me.

Adam: He left her with nothing. He messed with her the way that he messed with us. She didn’t deserve that.

Nick: I know.

Adam: Well, then why do we keep putting up with it?

[ Knocking on door ]

Victoria: Oh, well, there he is, the new coo of newman media. You know, I am so pleased that audra convinced you to come on board.

Kyle: I’m glad to be a part of the–

Victoria: Family.

Kyle: So to speak.

Victoria: Well, it’s not the first time that you’ve worked for newman enterprises and given our very complicated family history, you’ve maintained a good relationship with my father. He’s very happy that you’ve accepted the job.

Kyle: If victor’s happy, the world will remain on its axis.

[ Both chuckling ] So, is there something you wanted to discuss?

Victoria: Oh, no, I just thought that it was time that I check in and see how you’re settling in.

Kyle: I kind of skipped the settling in part. There’s a learning curve, of course.

Victoria: Uh-huh, which requires you collaborating effectively with audra. So, talk to me about how things are going with your boss.

Nate: You don’t seem to appreciate what a disaster this could have been.

Audra: It was averted because I went to victor and told him about adam’s blackmail plan. You know, victor seemed very appreciative of my loyalty,

Nate: Not the reaction I got for my role in this.

Audra: No, I– I made it absolutely clear that you did this to protect me and, you know, the company. That it had nothing to do with manipulation or personal gain, right?

Nate: You came to me, remember? I did act to protect you.

Audra: Look, and I’m grateful. Look, it’s over. Victor managed to shut down adam’s threat. Things worked out.

Nate: For you. For now.

Audra: Meaning what exactly? (Wheezing)

Nate: Don’t kid yourself that this is over. Adam is still a threat.

Audra: Well, daddy put him in his place.

Nate: But he didn’t cut him loose and it’s hardly the first time adam has defied victor. The family is always going to come first.

Audra: That’s what’s really bothering you. You knew this going in. Is it what fuels your drive to succeed? The need to prove yourself as an outsider. Nate, you have.

Nate: Except now I’m in a position of needing to defend myself. Explain my actions to nikki, to victor.

Audra: You are hooking up with their precious daughter, running their precious company with her. You’re going to be under the microscope. It’s part of the job.

Nate: It is victoria, too. There is a distance, a wariness. She knows I didn’t let her in from the very beginning about why I was pushing for the merger.

Audra: You acted to neutralize the threat, okay? Not to mention merging the two media companies newman owns makes sense, okay? If a savvy businesswoman like victoria can’t see that–

Nate: I broke trust, audra.

Audra: No, you didn’T. Ashland locke broke trust with her among others. You acted in victoria’s best interest, okay? In my opinion, it just seems like she’s just dumping her old baggage on you, which isn’t fair.

Nate: Oh, well, thank you for the brilliant insight.

Audra: You are ambitious, decisive and willing to take a risk if the reward is worth it. That’s something we have in common.

[ Nate sighing ] Those are very attractive qualities, okay? And I can’t seriously imagine that victoria would want to change that.

Nate: It’s a matter of trust, audra. Tell me something. Have you ever trusted anyone? Been trusted in return?

Audra: Well, I don’t make a habit of it.

Nate: Hm.

Audra: Answer me this. Do you think you’ve, uh, done irreparable damage to your relationship?

Nate: No, we’ll work through this.

Audra: Then, what are you worried about?

[ Nate scoffing ]

Nate: Next time you need this kind of favor, look somewhere else.

[ Nate sighing ]

[ Audra sighing ]

Kyle: It’s a shift, of course, moving into the media sphere from the world of high fashion and beauty, but they share some common elements. Tracking trends, staying keyed in with your target demographic, connecting with your team.

Victoria: Mm-hmm, so they’re motivated to bring their best and innovate. Do you know this is not an interview, kyle? You already have the job.

Kyle: Hey, my enthusiasm is real.

Victoria: I’m sure that it is.

Kyle: Okay. It’s not just the rush of being a part of a business that has the power to shape and inform public perception. It’s a challenge. Someplace new, free from family drama. My family.

[ Both chuckling ]

Victoria: You’ll have a lot of autonomy over there. You and audra. I mean, we believe in her, obviously.

Kyle: Well, you should. She’s dialed into every facet of the company and the numbers speak for themselves.

Victoria: Well, I know that you’re still relatively new, but can you speak to her approach? What is it like working with her?

Kyle: She’s smart enough not to feel threatened.

Victoria: Oh?

Kyle: When someone else has a good idea. Not that I’ve had that many yet.

Victoria: Well, as with you, this job represents a fresh opportunity for audra, given the amount of time she spent involved with tucker at that other business. At chancellor-winters. So, did she ever talk to you about any of that specifically?

Kyle: May I be honest?

Victoria: Yes, please.

Kyle: This feels like kind of a test. Your questions aren’t really about me. They’re about audra.

Nick: Look, I never wanted sally to take dad’s job offer. I knew he would just mess with her head.

Adam: Or he never intended to follow through. And dad didn’t just renege on the offer. He shut down her options at chancellors-winters first. He just left her hanging out to dry.

Nick: Sally’s going to be just fine, all right? She will get through this. She will find something else.

Adam: Yeah, of– of course she will. That’s not the point. I mean, he hurt her and it meant nothing to him. It was cold and it was calculated like…

Nick: It’s a chess move.

Adam: Exactly. Just some expendable piece on the board, one step closer to his real goal.

Nick: And what do you think that is, adam?

Adam: It– it’s us. It’s about you and it’s about me. You’ve been walking around for months, angry at me because I decided to defy him and ignore this ridiculous decree that we not merge the companies when it makes sense from a business perspective. So why would he do that?

Nick: Look, what happened with sally, it’s–

Adam: Just another manipulation. It’s another power move. Only this time he used a woman that we both care about to do it. He had to take back control by showing us he’s still in charge. So what I don’t understand is, why you are not more pissed off about that? Febreze!

Victoria: Audra is still relatively new to the job and this type of leadership role, so yes, I am looking to you for your– your executive experience. Any opinion that you might have or inside information. You seem very protective of her.

Kyle: Uh, audra told me newman media was recently the target of a takeover.

Victoria: Not exactly a takeover, but obviously, you heard about adam’s backdoor maneuver.

Kyle: I know how difficult things can get during an internal family battle, but I would hate to see audra become a casualty.

Victoria: Well, I appreciate your sense of loyalty and I’m sure that audra does, too.

Kyle: You know, does victor know adam resorted to blackmail?

Victoria: Yes, he does. And there’s something that I should share with you. Audra was the target of the blackmail.

Kyle: What?

Victoria: She was involved in covering up a potential scandal at mccall while she was working there. It involved one of their clients, a singer. The charge was statutory rape and if audra’s role had become public in that, it could have been very damaging to her career. You know, it’s not surprising that she kept this information from you. That was a long time ago.

Kyle: Yeah. Victor’s aware of what she was covering up?

Victoria: He is and because she confessed everything to him, her position at newman media is still secure for now. And he also made adam’s blackmail threat disappear.

Kyle: Hm. Now, your questions are making sense.

Victoria: I believe in audra. I want to continue to have full confidence in her. It goes without saying I won’t tell her that I shared this information with you.

Kyle: And victor made it clear he was against the merger. So, how does adam still have a job?

Victoria: Investments were made based on adam’s involvement in this new entity, which will now be called S.N.A media. And my father’s not exactly thrilled about the situation.

Kyle: I don’t imagine nick and sharon are either.

Victoria: Let me ask you something. How do you feel about merging newman media with S.N.A.?

Kyle: With adam still involved and him feeling like he can act with impunity? Victoria, I think it would be a disaster.

Victoria: I agree. Hopefully, it’s only a matter of time before adam is gone.

Kyle: This has been very informative.

Victoria: Yes, it has. I’m very happy to know that I have an ally.

Kyle: And I feel the same way.

Chloe: So bella is on this kick about getting a dog and I told her when she is old enough and she can take care of it, but you know kevin.

Esther: She has her daddy wrapped around her little finger. Well, a puppy might be nice.

Chloe: It– it would be like having another baby, except one that wants to eat your house. I don’t know, it’s just– you know, it’s all going to fall on my shoulders and I just can’t deal with any of that right now.

Esther: Okay. What is really going on, honey?

[ Chloe sighing ]

Chloe: I walked away from my partnership with sally.

Esther: Why?

Chloe: Victor made her this offer to run a whole new design division under the newman umbrella.

Esther: I don’t understand. A whole division? I mean, that sounds–

Chloe: Too good to be true? Yeah, because it is. I mean, we have a great gig at chancellor-winters with, you know, good and decent people and I warned sally that this would be an awful decision, but, you know, she is just determined to see it through.

Esther: Yeah, to seize an incredible opportunity.

Chloe: Mom.

Esther: Honey, you and sally are great together. You have a successful partnership. I don’t understand why you would just walk away and cut off your own future just because you don’t want to work under victor.

Chloe: Because it’s victor.

Victor: Well now, my two boys. Do I need to referee?

Adam: Ha. No, we’re not fighting. This is actually something that we agree on, dad.

Victor: Really?

Nick: You offered sally an amazing opportunity and then you pulled the rug out from under her. Why?

Victor: The timing was wrong.

Nick: You had no intention of making good on that offer, did you?

Victor: Did your brother tell you that?

Adam: Why would you go through all this trouble to mess with her like this?

Nick: Were you trying to teach her a lesson or send her a warning? I would really like to understand this.

Adam: Or did you do it just because you could?

Victor: You’re both presuming too much. You can’t leave without cuddles.

Victor: Boys, all the time and effort I put in… to make you work together, to be successful, encourage you to become part of a family we know we can be and all you do is you come together and you focus on protecting sally spectra. What’s this?

Nick: Sally doesn’t need protecting.

Adam: Yeah, she’s going to move on from this.

Victor: Then why did you come here? To waste my time? I told you I simply changed my mind about the design division. We don’t need it. It’s a business decision–

Adam: You went too far, okay? She just lost her baby.

Victor: Son, you’re lucky you have a job. I’ve had it with your constant defiance. After the latest stunt you’ve pulled, I have reached the limit of my tolerance. I want the merger to have been accomplished by next week. There’ll be a press party where we will announce the launch of a new media company called S.N.A. If you won’t do it, I will.

Esther: Working at newman enterprises would bring your career up to the next level.

Chloe: If it was a normal job opportunity, but this isn’t normal and victor isn’t generous. He doesn’t just go handing out design divisions to people without the newman name.

Esther: Well, he feels that this is a sound business move.

Chloe: Or some other kind of move with an ulterior motive.

Esther: Okay. Sally just lost a baby. It’s victor’s grandchild. She’s involved with nicholas. So– so maybe this is victor’s way of acknowledging the connection without actually acknowledging it.

Chloe: Okay. Well, that is a very victor-like way of dealing with a very simple human emotion.

Esther: Yeah, but this– this is what works for him. That’s why sally wants you to be part of this because of what you bring to the partnership. I mean, together, the– it’s– the sky’s the limit.

Chloe: Oh, mom, you’re so corny.

Esther: Oh, but I’m right.

[ Both chuckling ]

Sally: Um, hi. Sorry for interrupting a nice moment.

Esther: Oh, your timing is perfect.

Chloe: Yes. My mother was just imparting some wisdom. She thinks I was a little too knee jerky when you told me about your offer from victor.

Sally: With good reason.

Chloe: Well, I think I was wrong and, um, I would like to join you on this new venture at newman.

Sally: You were right not to trust victor. Victor is not starting a new design division. Maybe he never was.

Esther: Well, then why did he tell you?

Chloe: Because it’s victor.

Audra: Thank you.

Kyle: Sorry, I’m late. Victoria wanted to see me.

Audra: Oh, what does she want?

Kyle: Ostensibly, to check in with me, see how I’m settling in.

Audra: And the real reason?

Kyle: She was fishing for information about you and I called her out on it.

Audra: Noble. But do you think that was wise?

Kyle: Well, I told her if it came across as protective it was because I know what it’s like when family infighting spills over into the business. You know how ugly it can get. I didn’t want to see you become a casualty.

Audra: Thank you. And how did she respond?

Kyle: By telling me all the details about adam’s blackmail. How he was holding that cover-up of that singer over your head.

Audra: Um… I should have just told you about it.

Kyle: No, no, no, it was perfect. My surprise was genuine and victoria thought since she withheld information, it would change the way I look at you.

Audra: Does it?

Kyle: No. I let victoria believe she succeeded in planting her seed of doubt. That it made me more watchful of you. Anyway, the meeting ended with her saying, uh, she was glad that she had me as an ally.

Audra: Nicely done.

Kyle: But there’s a more immediate concern. She doesn’t completely trust you.

[ Knocking on door ]

Nate: I imagine I look like a walking cliche.

Victoria: You definitely do.

Nate: I’m sorry for creating this tension between us. I miss you. And I’m encouraged slightly that you didn’t throw it in my face.

Victoria: And waste a perfectly good cliche?

Nate: I want to find a way for us to get past this. Can we? I’m not just accomplished.

Nate: It was a mistake for me not to immediately tell you what was going on with adam.

Victoria: Yes, it was, and it brought up an all too familiar feeling. It made me wonder if there are more things that you’re not telling me and maybe I should see this as a warning sign.

Nate: I had nothing to gain by what I did. I was acting to manage a threat to protect the company and you.

Victoria: I’ve been through this before.

Nate: It won’t happen again.

Victoria: And I’ve heard that before.

Nate: I am not like them.

Victoria: Then why didn’t you just come to me from the start?

Nate: I’ve been asking myself that.

Victoria: And?

Nate: As close as we’ve gotten, as genuine as this feels, I am still the outsider. The one viewed with suspicion. I want to be able to tell you anything, to– to have that level of connection.

Victoria: And yet your inability to completely trust me has made me unsure that I can trust you.

Nate: No, it’s– it’s not about us. It’s about all the games, the– the brinkmanship. You know what? Let’s get out of here. Go away for the weekend and see if we can find a way to get past this.

Victoria: I guess it’s worth a try.

Sally: Victor had a change of heart about the whole design division and he said it is not happening.

Esther: Then why did he change his mind?

Chloe: Because he’s a heartless jerk.

Sally: He said it’s business and that’s how it works.

Chloe: Please. It was totally personal and it was definitely deliberate.

Esther: But why?

Sally: Doesn’t really matter why.

Chloe: Well, I’m sorry. It sucks for you.

Sally: Yeah.

Chloe: So, what are you going to do now?

Esther: You’re going to pull yourself up by the bootstraps and get back to work. That’s what.

Sally: Yeah, except for victor did us the favor of finding us a replacement at chancellor-winters, so I didn’t feel so bad about walking away to take his nonexistent job, so that offer is not an option.

Chloe: Okay. Well, on the bright side, we never got involved with victor.

Sally: But on the not so bright side, we are back at square one and have to start all over, come up with a new business plan and go out and find clients.

Esther: Well, whatever doesn’t kill you, it’ll make you stronger.

Sally: I’m not so sure about that.

Chloe: Mm, yeah, I always hated that saying.

[ Phone ringing ] Sorry. Uh, this is chelsea. She’s been going through some stuff with connor.

Sally: Yeah, go, go.

Esther: You can take it.

Chloe: Great.

Sally: Man, I got involved with not one, but two newman men and here I am. I put myself in this position.

Esther: Well, victor had no right to treat you this way.

Sally: Well, thank you, but I’m not the only one affected by it. I got chloe caught up in this whole thing and I just feel terrible about it.

Esther: No, sally, there is no need to. You are such a good friend to chloe and that’s more important than any contract or business plan in this whole world.

Nikki: So once again, adam is stirring things up and this time he managed to get nicholas to join him.

Victor: Well, I handled it.

Nikki: It’s been nothing but trouble since you bought mccall and forced those two to work together.

[ Victor sighing ]

Victor: The fact that nicholas was willing to side with adam to me is a positive development.

Nikki: Darling, you can only push them so far before it backfires.

Victor: Sweetheart, I push the hell out of them to get the best out of them.

Sharon: So, victor made sally this offer and then just yanked it away.

Nick: Yeah, dad told her that these things happen.

Adam: Yep. That’s what dad does when he wants to remind everybody who’s in charge.

Sharon: After everything she’s been through.

Adam: Mm-hmm. It’s about as cold blooded as it can get. And what about his parting words that if we don’t get the merger and the launch done this week, he’s going to step in and do it himself?

Nick: Well, dad has this never ending need to remind us all that, ultimately, he is always in charge.

Adam: I think there’s more to it than that. I think that he’s making moves with our company, if he hasn’t started already.

Nick: What makes you say that?

Adam: You know how his mind works. Wouldn’t it be the perfect thing to put us in our place if he took over S.N.A. Media entirely?

Sharon: Half the company would still be mine.

Adam: It doesn’t matter to him. He doesn’t care who he hurts. That’s why we have to act to get him off our back.

Nick: No, no. Just hold on. Wait a second.

Adam: We can’t afford to wait, okay? We got to take the fight to him, nick.

Nick: Are you kidding me, adam? That’s your answer? Before my doctor and I chose breztri for my copd,

Nick: So, dad gives us an ultimatum and this is your response. To push things further with no thought of the consequences.

Adam: I’m thinking about the consequences if we don’t act.

Sharon: Maybe we do need to be preemptive. I mean, from the beginning, victor’s been changing the rules on us.

Nick: And whose fault is that?

Adam: It’s mine, okay? For a lot of it. You both were right. I was focused on newman media.

Nick: Well, it’s a little late to own up to it now.

Sharon: Well, we can’t blame it all on adam. Victor has been all over us from day one, telling us what we can and cannot do. It’s become his vision of the company, not ours.

Nick: I mean, that’s a little too extreme.

Adam: Is it?

Sharon: It’s almost as if victor expects S.N.A. To fail. Maybe so that he can come in later and save the day.

Adam: Look, we have to find a way to take back control and get free of dad’s hold on us.

Nick: I’m telling you, this is not the way to handle things. I need a break.

[ Audra sighing ]

Audra: That’s the sense I got from victoria as well. That she’s no longer my biggest fan.

Kyle: No, I think she’s just making the same calculations any executive would make when there’s potential for a scandal. Besides, you’re obviously too smart and talented for her to let you go.

Audra: Well, if she does decide otherwise, she already has a very attractive replacement in my coo.

Kyle: This will blow over. You just need to keep putting up the same numbers you put up last quarter and you don’t have anything to worry about.

Audra: Hm. Says victoria newman’s new bestie.

Kyle: Being on good terms with her is good for both of us.

Audra: Yeah, well… I no longer have nate as an ally in the c suite.

Kyle: What happened?

Audra: Uh, well, he– um, he told me not to count on him for help if I ever get into another sticky situation that might affect his relationship with, uh, victoria and victor.

Kyle: Yeah, well, he’s just looking out for himself. That’s what he does.

Audra: What about you? When the going gets tough, are you the kind of guy who only looks out for himself?

Kyle: I will always have your back. You can count on me.

Esther: Everything okay with chelsea?

Chloe: Yeah, she and connor are going out of town for a while. She’s going to spend some time with her mom.

Sally: Well, getting away might be just what connor needs.

Chloe: Yeah, it was actually his idea.

Sally: Then, I think it’s a good thing.

Chloe: Yeah. Um, so she’s going to work remotely and she offered me a job to be her second-in-command at marchetti.

Esther: Oh, then why don’t you seem more excited about it?

Chloe: Well, because it would just be me and I– I mean, I really don’t want to leave you in the lurch again.

Sally: I think you should take it.

Chloe: But what about our company?

Sally: I’m starting to get the feeling maybe it just wasn’t meant to be.

[ Chloe sighing ]

[ Both laughing ]

Victoria: Yeah. Oh, I’m sorry.

[ Phone ringing ] Oh. Oh, it’s– it’s my dad.

Nate: I’m busy.

Victoria: No, no, no. You should get it. You should get it.T . Get it.

[ Both sighing ]

Nate: Victor.

Victor: Have you looked at the kirsten-mccall business plan as I requested?

Nate: I have. Yes.

Victor: And?

Nate: I have thoughts.

Victor: Oh, good. I want to hear them. Please come over to the ranch.

Nate: On my way.

Victoria: I don’t like this. With moderate to severe plaque psoriasis,

Victoria: My father’s up to something. He has a plan and you’re part of it.

Nate: If you’re right, it’s a good thing. A chance to reestablish myself.

Victoria: He’s pulling you away from me.

Nate: What makes you say that?

Victoria: Because I know how his mind works. He wants to replace adam with you. It’s a smart move. I’m just not sure that I like it.

Nate: Which means you do forgive me.

Nikki: So, you plan to use nate as a threat to adam.

Victor: Nate is not a threat. He’s insurance.

Nikki: Adam’s going to see this for what it is.

Victor: I don’t give a damn. Adam has been acting recklessly, pursuing his own interests instead of focusing on the merger.

Nikki: But this is just going to upset him, which will make him even more reckless. And darling, I know your ultimate goal is to unite this family, but this seems to be setting things in motion to create more chaos.

Victor: My baby, you’ve got to trust me when I tell you I know what I’m doing.

Sharon: Nick will calm down. He wants what we all want.

Adam: Yeah. Well, I’m more concerned about my son right now. How anxious and depressed connor is, how angry he got.

Sharon: Well, anger is good. Anger you can work with. The worst thing that connor could have done was isolate himself and keep it all bottled up inside, but the fact that he found the school near anita’s on his own, you should feel good about that.

Adam: You know, I have this fear that I can’t shake. We all want our children to inherit the best parts of us, right? My whole life, I battled this guilt and anger and this– this darkness and given chelsea’s emotional struggles, I can’t help feeling we passed it on to him and it just– it breaks my heart, sharon.

Sharon: You know, connor will get help. He wants help.

Adam: I just want him to heal, whatever it takes. I don’t want our relationship to become like the one I have with my father because no matter how much I hope, it just seems to get worse.

[ Sally sighing ]

Nick: You okay?

Sally: I have been better.

Nick: Adam and I went to see my dad to call him out over what he did.

Sally: Oh, I wish you hadn’t done that. Now, he’s going to think it was all my doing.

Nick: Sally, this was never about you.

Sally: Yes, this was about him making a point to you and adam.

Nick: Which is why I never wanted you to work with my dad in the first place. No matter what he says, it’s never just about business. Adam seems to think we need to find a way to get out from under his control. Sharon, too.

Sally: What, you mean break away from newman enterprises? Won’t that just make things worse?

Nick: I’m trying to play peacemaker as usual, but I don’t know how much longer I can keep it up. Eventually, something has to give and god help us all when it does.

Chelsea: I’m gonna go check on connor. For him to call anita and just sneak off like that?

Billy: It’s okay. I’ve got my eye on the door. He’s safe upstairs. He’s fine.

Chelsea: Still, I–

Adam: Look, he finally let us in. He told us how he really feels. Why don’t we just give him the space that he asked for?

Chelsea: He wants to be anywhere but here, and I didn’t realize. I mean, I know he was going through something, but I didn’t know just how much pain he was in.

Billy: Yeah, he is, and you knew something was going on and now, you know more. That’s a good thing.

Chelsea: He kept his feelings bottled up inside because he didn’t want to upset me. That is my worst fear. My issues becoming his issues. His burden.

Adam: No, stop. That– that is not what is happening here, chelsea.

Chelsea: You don’t know that.

Adam: Okay, you’re right. I– I don’t have the answers, but what I do know is– is guilt is pointless right now.

Billy: I’m surprised that he wants to go spend more time with anita though.

Chelsea: I think he just wants to be as far away from here as possible. What are we supposed to do? Just, like, up and move? I mean, your life is here.

Adam: I know.

Chelsea: He has to be by you and– and he has to be by me. My life is finally getting to a better place. To leave now would be…

Billy: We’ll figure it out.

Adam: Actually, we will figure it out since he’s our son.

Chelsea: Adam, billy has been there for connor, okay? He’s a part of my life, he’s part of our lives.

Adam: Yes, because I am not around enough.

Chelsea: That’s not what I’m saying.

Adam: Listen. Billy, thank you for your concern, but chelsea and I, we will take it from here.

[ Phone ringing ]

Chance: Hey.

Sharon: Hi.

Chance: Thanks for coming. Mm. Have a seat.

Sharon: Well, it sounded important.

Chance: Yeah. I, uh… I have some news.

Sharon: Good news, I hope?

Chance: Could be. Very surprising, that’s for sure.

Sharon: Tell me.

Chance: Things could be changing for me in a very big way. I’m done. That was so good, but I am now very late for my meeting.

Daniel: Now, tell me it wasn’t totally worth it though. The chocolate, the coconut.

Lily: Yes, yes, it was so good, but I’m very full and sleepy and I have a room full of department heads wondering why their ceo is late.

Daniel: Eh, totally worth the wait.

Lily: Yeah, easy for you to say because your omegasphere meeting is later. You can go take a nap if you want to.

Daniel: You know what? That, uh, nap idea actually sounds pretty good and having a room right upstairs, I don’t see why I shouldn’t do something like that.

Lily: Oh, my god. I hate you.

Daniel: I’m kidding. Look, I’m gonna sit here, I’m gonna drink my coffee and I’m gonna be on time for my meeting because… at least one of us should be punctual.

Daniel: Bye. Heather. Hey! I have been trying to get in touch with you. Please, sit down. Um, have you not got any of my messages?

Heather: Uh, no, I… I did. I just– I, um…

Daniel: Look, I wanted to say thank you, you know. Thank you for taking over for michael and for helping out with my mom. It really means a lot to me.

Heather: It’s just– you know, when I get focused on work, time slips away from me. I’m sorry.

Daniel: No, I remember.

[ Daniel laughing ] Um, you know, lucy shouldn’t have to be our go between though.

Heather: You’re right. You’re absolutely right.

Daniel: Are you okay? Come on, what’s going on? You seem a little weird.

Heather: Ah, this is hard for me to admit. I have been avoiding you.

Sharon: Okay, well enough with the suspense already. What is this life changing news?

Chance: So, I get a call from chief williams, right? Well, he’s not chief anymore. He’s retired from the force. I just– I call him chief for some reason still. Anyways, he’s been in portugal staying with heather before she got here, believe it or not.

Sharon: Oh, my god. Chance, you are the worst deliverer of news ever.

Chance: Okay, okay, okay. Paul retires, right? They name an interim chief for the time being. Nobody at the station thinks he’s right for the job, so when the police commission asked paul who he thinks should take over, he recommended me.

Sharon: Wow. Whoa, that is such a huge vote of confidence. Did you accept?

Chance: Well, I haven’t gotten the official offer just yet, but.

Sharon: Okay, but the offer will come in, right?

Chance: Sounds like it.

Sharon: How do you feel about it?

[ Chance sighing ]

Chance: It’s a big responsibility, right? It’s a big step up. It’s not just me and a partner working cases anymore.

Sharon: That’s true. I understand, but you know, you’ve had a lot of ambivalence this year about being a detective and I know it’s because it’s not all about just putting together evidence and building your case. There’s politics involved, relationships.

Chance: Always. And it kind of seems like the truth is, uh, an old fashioned ideal at this point.

Sharon: Maybe this is a new path. It’s still law enforcement, yes, but with more control and more impact possibly.

Chance: That’s what I think of. I think of paul and how he set the tone. He didn’t play any games. Didn’t let anything slide.

Sharon: So, when you think about having this position, how do you feel about it? Is it something you want?

[ Chance sighing ]

Chelsea: Billy and connor have become close. Billy has been able to explain things to a little boy who doesn’t wanna hear them from his mother. They spend a lot of time together, so for you to just dismiss him like that is actually not okay.

Billy: It’s all right.

Adam: You’re right. I am sorry that I diminished the role that you play in chelsea’s life and connor’s life.

Chelsea: Adam, I know you’re going through a lot lately. Everything that happened with the baby, so I’m sure the idea of connor leaving town hits you really hard.

Adam: I’m– I’m– I’m not thinking about me or my loss. All I’m thinking about right now is connor. He’s the only one that matters. And him running off to go be with anita is not gonna take connor’s pain away, okay? You mentioned that he should see a therapist. I think that’s the step we should take. I think he should talk to somebody who’s not his parent or his buddy, and someone that can help guide him to a better place.

Billy: I tend to agree. I mean, the fact that he did open up to us means he’s ready to talk.

Chelsea: Well, that’s great. You’re both right. Connor would absolutely benefit from therapy. But it doesn’t matter what we think if he doesn’t agree. He has to be ready and willing to take those first steps and we all know how hard that can be.

Adam: Wh–

Chelsea: Adam, I know our son. So do you. This is about so much more than talking to somebody. He made it very clear what he needs, what he wants and it’s to be far away from this place that’s causing him so much pain.

Adam: Yeah, and he’s gonna take that pain with him wherever he goes. We both know that, chelsea. The scenery, it changes nothing.

Chelsea: The first thing we have to do is listen to what he’s saying to us, okay? Hear him out. He has made it clear, adam. He doesn’t want to be here.

Adam: Okay, so– so you do want to leave?

Chelsea: I think the first step is we get him out of walnut grove where he’s being bullied and then, I– yeah, I think he should spend some time with anita. Maybe she wasn’t the best mom in the world, but they’ve gotten really close and connor adores her.

Adam: Chelsea, it’s still anita. I mean, god knows what kind of private advice that she’s gonna give him.

Chelsea: Oh, come on, adam. What is she gonna do? Teach him to grift? Give me a break.

Adam: No, that’s not what I’m talking about, but she just– she sees the world in a different way and it’s not usually in a positive and productive way.

Chelsea: Okay, so what do you suggest, hm? We keep connor here and he keeps doing therapy with sharon and he’s miserable? That hasn’t worked so far. Why would it work moving forward?

Adam: We take smaller steps. We put him in a different school and he spends more time at the ranch and he spends more time with me.

Chelsea: Are you really thinking about what connor needs or about what you want?

Adam: Look, connor needs both of his parents. Taking my son hundreds of miles away, cutting him out of my life–

Billy: That’s not what she’s talking about doing, adam. She wouldn’t do that.

Adam: Are you still here?

Chelsea: Adam.

Adam: Chelsea, my son needs me and I need him. I mean, sharon is not the only therapist in town. Surely, we can find somebody else for him to talk to or we can get him into some support group and school is starting soon, okay? We will put him in a school that is not walnut grove. Hell, I’ll buy a frickin’ school if that’s what it takes.

Chelsea: You’re not listening to me or your son. He is a scared, little boy right now, adam, and I’m trying my best to make sure–

Connor: Stop it! Both of you!

Chance: You know, being a cop in this town definitely has its challenges, that’s for sure. Everybody thinks they’re above the law, everybody thinks they can manipulate it to suit them and take matters into their own hands and I get tired of that, so I have been questioning whether or not police work is where I belong.

Sharon: I understand, but you’re good at what you do and you said yourself, phyllis’ case reminded you of why you do it. It reignited your love for your job.

Chance: Absolutely. Getting down to the truth, following every lead, that’s gratifying. I love that. And when lives are hanging in the balance, I like making a difference too. So yes, I have been enjoying my job a lot more lately. But, you know what? I never really put too much thought into being a cop. It kind of just fell into my lap. Seemed right, you know? So, I’ve been trying to decide whether or not this is what I really want to do. It feels like this career chose me rather than I chose it. Does that make any sense?

Sharon: Yeah, yeah, I get it. Look at my winding career path. Coffee house owner, cosmetic spokesperson, magazine publisher, therapist.

Chance: Media tech mogul now.

Sharon: Yeah, well, hopefully soon. What about you?

Chance: I don’t know, sharon. I really don’t know. I like being out in the field. That’s where I belong. Working my own cases, doing my own thing. If I was police chief, I would be in charge of every case, you know? And the bureaucracy. I mean, I don’t– I don’t know. What do you think? You know a little bit about the gcpd.

Sharon: From when I was a victims liaison.

Chance: Do you see me as the chief of police?

Daniel: Wow, avoiding me, really? When did we get to that place? I mean, we are co-parents, for god’s sakes.

Heather: I know. I’m sorry. It’s just– you know, you– you have a lot going on with work and– and your mother and– and I didn’t want to interfere or um, distract you.

Daniel: God knows that I could’ve used a distraction from my mother’s shenanigans.

Heather: I just– I got the feeling that the whole family, you, summer, your mom, had some healing to do.

Daniel: Hm. Yeah, that’s for sure. You know my mother.

Heather: That I do.

Daniel: I would say that, um, some healing has happened, but you know, still got a long way to go. I mean, is that the reason why you’re avoiding me? It– I get the feeling that there’s something you’re not saying, so what is it, hm? Are you worried that I’m the same person that broke your heart and broke lucy’s heart? Is that why you’re staying away from me? Because it’s not the case. I’m not that person anymore. Next!

Daniel: I am not the same person that I was before. You know, the guy who totally screwed everything up. I would avoid that person too. I really would. But you know, now–

Heather: I know it’s different and you’re different and I can see that you really got your act together. I am tremendously proud of everything you’ve accomplished. It’s impressive. Video game designer, running your own division of this big company. Wow, you’ve– you’ve come a long way.

Daniel: Well, then, is it lucy? Did she say something?

Heather: No, of course not. You know that. She adores you. It’s often I can’t get her to stop talking about how talented her dad is.

Daniel: I like that. Yeah, you can– you can tell me more about that if you’d like.

Heather: I’m really grateful that you two have reconnected and that your relationship is solid again.

Daniel: Then I don’t get it. Why do you not want to be around me?

Heather: It’s not that I don’t want to be around you. It’s that I don’t want to complicate things. You have your life back on track, we’re doing great. We work as co-parents.

Daniel: I agree.

Heather: But we lead separate lives, so I’m just– I’m trying to keep it that way. Not blur any lines or confuse lucy. I just– I don’t want us to fall back into old patterns or make the other one uncomfortable.

Daniel: Almost sounds like you might be sticking around town for a while.

Heather: Maybe for a little while. I mean, my firm is officially closed. We shut down for three weeks every august, so you know, I don’t feel any rush to get back to portugal.

Daniel: That’s great. It is and I will take all the time I can get with lucy.

Heather: I think, to be honest, I didn’t share my plans right away because I wasn’t sure how’d you really feel about me sticking around town.

Daniel: I think it’s fantastic.

Sharon: You would be an amazing chief of police, if that’s what you decide you want. I suppose I wouldn’t mind you spending a little bit more time in an office, though I know you are an adrenaline junkie. I guess I’ll admit, I’d be glad to not see you in as much danger and you can use your sherlock holmes brain on all of the cases in your department, not just your own.

Chance: Yeah, this is true.

Sharon: There is one other really important question though.

Chance: What?

Sharon: Would you occasionally have to wear a suit? Because you look killer in a suit.

[ Chance chuckling ] The truth is only you can make this decision.

Chance: Yeah, I know, I know. I just value your perspective, that’s all. And I want to be ready if this official offer comes in.

Sharon: When it comes in.

Chance: You have made some solid points. Except for the whole suit thing. I don’t think I could ever be a suit guy, sorry.

Sharon: Um, james bond. Chance chancellor? Come on. Besides, you look sexy in anything you’re wearing or not wearing.

Connor: Please stop fighting about me.

Billy: Come here. Come sit down.

Chelsea: Sweetie, we weren’t fighting, okay? Your dad and i are just trying to figure out what’s best for you. What’s best for our family.

Connor: I already told you, I don’t wanna go back to walnut grove. I hate it there. Please? Can I go to a new school with new kids who won’t know anything about me or my family? And they’ll wanna be my friends.

Chelsea: But you have friends.

Connor: No, I don’T. Not really. Only johnny and he’s going away to another school. Everybody at walnut grove knows about my mom having issues and my dad fighting with his family. And they know about me and johnny finding out this year that we’re brothers. They talk about all of it when they think that I can’t hear them. Like I’m some kind of freak.

Billy: That’s gotta hurt.

Adam: Connor, I’m sorry that this has been hard on you. You know, your mom and I, we knew somewhat what was going on, but I wish you had shared this with us, how you felt before. And– and I understand why you didn’T. You’re a sensitive kid and you know, your mom and I, we love that about you. You knew that mom and I, we were struggling with our own issues and you were thinking about our feelings.

Billy: Connor, that just goes to show what a bright, great kid you are.

Connor: Yes, but that is not your job. It’s our job, okay? We’re multi-taskers. At least, we like to think we are anyway.

Chelsea: Your dad’s right. We can handle whatever you throw at us, but next time, just talk to us. Tell us what you’re feeling. Tell us that you need help. Don’t let it get to the point where you wanna run away.

Connor: When I was upstairs, I looked online and found a school near where anita lives. It’s for kids my age who have anxiety and depression.

Chelsea: You mean you found a school or you found a therapist?

Connor: No, I mean an actual school with classes and sports and kids. I guess it’s not just me who’s like this.

Chelsea: You found this just now when you went upstairs? Online?

Connor: To show you how serious I am. So you know how much I need to do this.

Adam: Listen, connor. This is a big move. I mean, are– are you sure there aren’t things here that will help you? I mean, I love having you here. We have so much fun together when we go to the ranch, at your games.

Connor: Can we look at the place? Please, dad. And if we like it, I could go. I won’t be that far away. You can visit me. A lot.

[ Both sighing ]

Chelsea: Connor, this is a big decision.

Connor: I don’t want to go to that bad place you were in.

Chelsea: I don’t want that either, baby.

Adam: I guess we can– we can take a look at what you found. What do you think, mom?

[ Chelsea sighing ] (Wheezing)

Adam: Yeah, it was very mature.

Chelsea: My baby’s not a baby anymore. But your dad’s right. I wish you would’ve just told us how you felt, that you were in so much pain instead of running away.

Connor: I was confused and scared, I guess. I thought if I asked you to move away, you’d say no.

Adam: Well, your mom and I, we will, um, we’ll do our own research.

Chelsea: Yeah. We will have a very serious talk.

Adam: Yes, we will make the choice that works best for all of us. Deal?

Connor: Yeah.

Adam: Deal?

Connor: Deal.

Billy: Why don’t we go for a walk for a little while, all right? We’ll get some fresh air. Let your mom and dad talk for a bit.

Chelsea: That’s a nice idea. Thank you.

Connor: I guess.

Billy: Okay, come on.

Chelsea: Now, do you see how letting connor leave is the right thing to do?

[ Adam sighing ]

Chance: Okay, that’s enough about me. Let’s talk about you. How goes it, huh? How is adustus?

Sharon: Well, adustus is no more. It’s now changed to sna media.

Chance: Sharon, nick, adam.

Sharon: Exactly.

Chance: Nailed it. Well, hey, at least you convinced adam that his name sucked. That’s a big step in the right direction, right? What else, huh? How’s adam? Is he behaving?

Sharon: Uh, not exactly.

Chance: Oh, that’s no surprise. What’d he do?

Sharon: He tried blackmailing audra charles into convincing nikki and victoria that sna and newman media should merge.

Chance: Geez. You sure you want to be discussing a blackmail plot perpetrated by your partner with possibly the next chief of police? Unless you want me to arrest adam ’cause I could totally do that. I would gladly do that actually. That actually might be a plus for sna. We could make it s&n just like that. Say the word, I’m on it.

[ Sharon chuckling ]

Sharon: Stop. No, we have adam under control, so no arrest needed. Not yet anyway.

Daniel: I– I’ll take that, thank you very much.

Lily: Hi, sorry.

Daniel: Lily, what happened? Did your meeting get cancelled?

Lily: Oh, there it is. No, I left my tablet, so you know, leadership at its best.

Daniel: I didn’t even see it. You know, you could’ve called me, I would’ve brought it to you.

Lily: Oh, no, no. It’s fine. Once I realized I forgot, I just told my assistant to reschedule the meeting, so.

Daniel: Oh, my god. The meeting, my meeting. I’m gonna be late for my meeting now.

Heather: I hope I didn’t make you late.

Daniel: No, no, no. No, this is good. This is fine. I’m really glad we got a chance to do this. I feel much better about things.

Heather: Me too.

Daniel: Get to my meeting. Uh, are you heading back to the office?

Lily: Um, actually, well, my meeting was rescheduled, so I have some time. I don’t know if you’re free, but maybe if you want to have coffee and catch up?

Lily: Well, I have to say, bravo to you for keeping phyllis out of jail. I mean, how did you even do that?

Heather: Daniel didn’t tell you what happened?

Lily: Well, he didn’t give me details. He just said that, you know, phyllis plead guilty and told the judge her story and they had leniency on her.

Heather: I mean, that’s the gist, but because it involved phyllis, it was much more complex and passionate than that.

Lily: Yeah, of course. I mean, she is her own worst enemy, but I have to believe that you played a big role in having her not serve time.

Heather: Phyllis really deserves all the credit. I– I barely said anything. You know, it’s strange seeing someone like her being truly vulnerable, but she did it. She opened her heart and let it all pour out.

Lily: And the judge bought it, obviously.

Heather: It wasn’t a matter of buying it. It’s about understanding what she’d gone through, but I believe that phyllis was sincere. Her remorse felt real.

Lily: Yeah, but I mean, you’re a mom, right? I mean, didn’t you think it was awful how she hurt summer and daniel?

Heather: Oh, my god. Yes. I– I was furious. I mean, lucy had just only recently stopped worrying about her dad, then this and all the worry came right back. But I am trying to take phyllis at her word that this experience changed her because it’s good for daniel and lucy. I mean, lucy loves the woman she will never call grandma.

Lily: Yeah. Okay, well, now that the case is closed, are you heading back to portugal?

Heather: Uh, my firm closes every august and– and I just picked up a few pro bono cases in town, so, um, lucy loves hanging out with her dad and I don’t see a reason to rush back. School doesn’t start for a while.

Lily: Yeah, nice. Well, daniel was saying you’re in a relationship, so does your partner care that you’re extending your stay?

Heather: It’s not a problem. Daniel seems like he’s doing really well, don’t you think?

Lily: Yeah, I mean, you know, look. Anyone who thinks that their mother has died and then finds out she’s alive, I think, is gonna be thrown for a loop.

Heather: True.

Lily: Yeah, but, you know, he’s looking forward. And, you know, I also wanna believe that phyllis has changed, but I’m definitely more of a wait and see kind of person. I just– I don’t want him to get hurt again and end up in that dark place that he was in that you and lucy had to deal with.

Heather: Yeah, I don’t want to see him hurt again either, but like I said, a changed phyllis, a better phyllis, is good for father and daughter.

Chelsea: I mean, this place connor found, it could be exactly what he needs. It looks like a warm environment, supportive, welcoming.

Adam: Well, the facilities do look solid and I– he seems to have classmates that would understand what he’s going through.

Chelsea: Yeah. He cld live in the dorm or with anita. I know it’s hard for you to let him go, especially now, but he really wants this and I really wanna see him smile again.

Adam: Gosh. Me too. But, I mean, chelsea, what about you? I mean, can you really get away from genoa city? You just got this amazing, high-powered new job.

Chelsea: The truth is, I can do what I need to do remotely, and I’ve got a great team I can rely on here. If I have to hire someone to be my eyes and ears, I’ll do that. It’s gonna be a sacrifice for both of us, but that’s what we signed up for, right? Our son comes first.

Adam: Mm-hmm. 100%.

Connor: Do you think my mom and dad are going to let me go away?

Billy: I think you made a very strong case for yourself. You know, your mom and dad, they love you a lot.

Connor: I’m sorry, billy.

Billy: What are you sorry about?

Connor: I know you’re gonna miss my mom if we move.

Billy: Yeah. I’m gonna miss your mom. I’m gonna miss you too, but that’s what phones are for, right? And I’ll come and visit you wherever you are and even bring johnny for a little visit.

Connor: That’d be cool.

Billy: Look, I’m not your parent, connor, but I really want what’s best for you. You know that, right?

Connor: Yes.

Billy: And all of this– this stuff, it’ll all work itself out, okay?

Connor: Okay.

Billy: You’re a brave kid. It’s not easy to tell people how you feel. To share those big, sometimes scary, emotions is hard and you did that. You should be proud of yourself. You’re an amazing kid. You got a very bright future ahead of you, I promise you that.

Chelsea: Thank you.

[ Chelsea sighing ] Sharon, hey. Could I talk to you for a second?

Sharon: Sure, sure.

Chance: Yeah, go ahead. I gotta get back to work. I’ll call you.

Sharon: Okay.

Chance: Bye.

Chelsea: Um, have you heard of this place?

Sharon: Yeah, I have. They have a very good reputation. They do great work with children and teens.

Chelsea: Um, do you think it could be a good fit for connor?

Sharon: I imagine it would be. Did dr. Malone mention this to you?

Chelsea: No, um, connor found it actually.

Sharon: By himself?

Chelsea: Mm-hmm. Apparently, he doesn’t wanna go to walnut grove anymore. Or live in genoa city. He’s having some emotions that are scaring him. He– he doesn’t wanna end up like me.

Sharon: Oh, chelsea, I’m sure he didn’t say it like that.

Sharon: Wow, so connor found that all by himself. Well, that’s very mature. I would take that as a positive sign.

Chelsea: So, I mean, you think we should consider it?

Sharon: Sounds like you already are and that makes sense. How are you coping with all this?

Chelsea: I feel guilty. I feel scared. I really thought I knew my son. I thought that we had great communication and now, I– I just– I–

Sharon: Well, don’t– don’t beat yourself up. I see nothing but hope in everything you’re telling me.

Chelsea: Really?

Sharon: Yeah. Your son, who is in grade school, is self-aware enough, smart enough, to recognize that he can’t figure out his problems on his own. He brought you and adam this potential solution. That speaks to good parenting and it says that he trusts you to help him with his problems.

Chelsea: Yeah, but what if–

Sharon: No, no. No what ifs. I see your family moving in a positive direction. I’m sure of it. Where are you going?

Connor: Hey, mom.

Chelsea: Hey, guys. How was your walk?

Connor: Did you and dad talk?

Chelsea: We did. We will go check out the school you found. I’ve already made the arrangements.

Connor: Thank you!

Chelsea: Oh, you’re–

[ Chelsea laughing ] You’re welcome. And I– I spoke to your grandmother and if everything looks good at this school, she says that we’re welcome to stay with her for a while, at least until I find a place for us to live.

Connor: Thanks, mom.

Chelsea: Yeah. Why don’t you, uh, why don’t you go upstairs and we’ll talk more about this in a few minutes, okay?

[ Chelsea sighing ]

Billy: So, adam agreed?

Chelsea: Yep. We both want what’s best for connor. So, we’re gonna go check out this school. Sharon says they have a great reputation, and if it’s a good fit, I’ll make it work. I will move in with my mother, god help me, and work remotely.

Billy: Yeah, well, you gotta do what’s right for your boy.

Chelsea: The hardest part is gonna be leaving you.

Billy: We’ll be all right. We’re in a good place. We’ll talk all the time. Connor already asked me to visit as much as possible.

Chelsea: He did, did he? Well, I love that. I just hate leaving now. You have so much going on with jabot and jack and ashley.

Billy: It’s okay. I’ll be fine. Connor comes first.

Chelsea: Thank you for understanding.

Billy: I’m gonna miss the hell out of you.

Chelsea: I’m gonna miss you too.

Daniel: Hey, I just got off the phone with your mother. Yes, we are gonna make the most of these next few weeks. Yeah, of course, I’m gonna take some time off. I don’t know, whatever you wanna do. You wanna go see a ball game, we’ll go see a ball game. You wanna go to an amusement park? Tell you what. Just make a list. Okay. Okay, I’ll call you tomorrow and we can make some plans. Bye.

Sharon: Good news, huh?

Daniel: Lucy’s gonna be spending the rest of the summer here.

Sharon: Well, that’s wonderful.

Daniel: Yeah, it is pretty wonderful. Um, speaking of which, you should probably stock up on the ingredients for those mocha fudge frozen blast drinks that she likes so much.

Sharon: I’m on it. I’m on it.

[ Daniel sighing ]

Daniel: Best end of summer ever.

Lily: Well, I know that daniel’s gonna be thrilled to have lucy stick around for a while.

Heather: Lucy too. She adores her dad.

Lily: And she’s so great. She really is. She’s so strong and smart and funny and that’s definitely a credit to you.

Heather: She’s the best.

Lily: Although, watch out for the high school years because honestly, mattie and I, we were so close and then all of a sudden, we just argued over everything.

Heather: Thanks for the warning.

Lily: Yeah. But it’s funny ’cause lucy, I feel like she’s so intrigued by daniel and I in high school and how we were so young and in love.

Heather: That is quite a story. I’m, uh, really glad that you two found each other again.

Lily: Yeah. Me too. I’m glad.

Heather: Daniel seems happy.

Chelsea: Connor. Look at me, please. Why won’t you tell me what’s bothering you? Your attitude this morning has been unacceptable. If you don’t want to go to sports camp, that’s okay. But we have to be able to talk about it in a calm and respectful way.

[ Connor sighs ]

Adam: How’d things go with victor? When do you start your new job at newman?

Sally: I don’T.

Adam: What do you mean? What happened?

Sally: Victor pulled the plug. And he did it because of you.

[ Tucker grunts ]

Tucker: Hey. Good morning, mrs. Ashley abbott mccall. How does that sound?

Ashley: I made a huge mistake.

Jack: What is this?

Diane: I thought I’d surprise you with a nice breakfast before we head off to the office.

Jack: Well, lovely. Thank you, um, what exactly are we celebrating?

Diane: It’s our two-week anniversary.

Jack: Oh, that long?

Diane: Oh, yes. It feels like forever, doesn’t it?

Jack: And forever sounds pretty good right now. So, what have we got? What is this?

Diane: Further proof of just how much I love you.

[ Sighs ]

Jack: This looks like a pre-nup.

Diane: Well, technically, since we’re already married, it’s a, um, it’s a post-nuptial agreement.

Jack: I don’t understand.

Diane: Well, we got married so quickly that we really didn’t have time to discuss all of this, so I had michael draft it before he left town.

Jack: Well, you have michael tear it up right now.

Diane: Jack.

Jack: We don’t need this. This implies that I don’t trust you, and I do, unconditionally.

Diane: I know. And I love you for that. But this has been hanging over my head since even before we got married.

Jack: Why?

Diane: Why? Because everybody thinks that I came into this relationship with some grand scheme to get my hands on jabot and the family fortune. Especially your sister.

Jack: To hell with them and to hell with her. You don’t have to prove anything to anyone.

Diane: Well, I think I do. And I think this would shut everyone up once and for all and– and give ashley one less excuse to have a problem with us.

Jack: I– I– I– it doesn’t feel right. It seems like we’re sending the message that our marriage is conditional when nothing could be farther from the truth.

Diane: No, we’re sending a message that I love you and that I married you for all the right reasons. Jack, if, god forbid, anything happened to break us apart–

Jack: Oh, don’t– don’t even think it.

Diane: Well, I– I don’t want to think about that, but people are going to say it, and this would prove to them that I did marry you for the right reasons and that I was walking away from this relationship with what I brought into it and nothing more.

Tucker: Is this a joke?

Ashley: I’m not laughing.

Tucker: Yeah.

[ Tucker chuckles ] We got married yesterday, did we not? I thought we had a magical evening.

Ashley: So magical that you snuck off in the middle of the night?

Tucker: Oh. Yeah. I was restless. I couldn’t sleep.

Ashley: So, where’d you go?

Tucker: To the bar for a drink.

Ashley: Did you run into anybody there?

Tucker: Is this an interrogation?

Ashley: It’s just a question, tucker.

Tucker: I went to the bar alone.

Ashley: You want to try that again?

Tucker: What is it you think you know, ashley?

Ashley: I know that you went down to the bar, and you had a drink with nate and then you ended up in audra’s room.

Billy: Hey. How’s everybody’s morning going? That good, huh?

Chelsea: Uh, connor had a bad night. He hasn’t been sleeping well the past few days.

Billy: Oh, is that right? You– you having some nightmares? Yeah, I have nightmares too. It screws up my whole next day. You know, I got a few things that I like to kind of work on or– or try to try and make myself feel better. I can share a few of my tricks if– if you don’t mind. Of course, if your mom doesn’t mind.

Chelsea: I think connor would rather talk to anybody other than his mom right now. So, by all means.

Billy: What do you say? Yeah? Okay.

Chelsea: You know what, um, I’m gonna go get you a snack.

Billy: So, why don’t you tell me a little bit about these nightmares?

Connor: You’ll just think it’s stupid.

Billy: Oh, I guarantee you, I won’T. Trust me. My dreams are very stupid. Much, much stupider than yours.

[ Connor sighs ]

Connor: I was on this boat in the middle of the ocean, and I fell off. It was night, so I couldn’t see anything except for a light on the boat. But no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t get to it. It just kept getting farther away.

Billy: Hmm, were you sinking in the water too?

Connor: Yeah.

Billy: No matter how hard you tried, you couldn’t get to the surface and the light just got further and further away?

Connor: You’ve had that dream too?

Billy: Yeah, I have. And, uh, yeah, before you know it, you find yourself in the middle of somewhere where you’ve never been before and– and you’re– you’re scared, and you’re confused.

Connor: Then what happens?

Billy: Then I wake up… still scared… but I realize that I’m home in my own bed, and that everything’s okay.

Connor: But what if everything doesn’t feel okay? What if everything is just… really, really bad?

Billy: You gotta look at your life, and you gotta think about why you feel that way. And then you gotta talk to someone. Like you’re doing right now.

Adam: What exactly did my father say about the job?

Sally: Mm, just that he changed his mind about having a design division at newman because he needed to focus on your company. More specifically, he needed to put all of his energy into keeping you and nick in line.

[ Adam scoffs ]

Adam: Damn him.

Sally: Yeah, so whatever you did to disappoint him or piss him off, I am now out of a job.

Adam: I’m sorry, sally.

Sally: Yeah, me too.

Adam: Okay, his jerking you around like this is unfair, and I’m gonna do everything I can to fix it.

Sally: Look, adam, I don’t even know if you can fix this, okay? Victor did not give off a vibe at all that this was negotiable. In fact, he specifically said there will never be a design division in newman.

Adam: Wait…

Sally: I don’t know. Honestly, I– I just felt like I was some small part of a bigger plan.

Adam: What do you mean?

Sally: I don’t know. I just got the feeling that there was more going on with victor than just keeping people in line. But clearly he doesn’t feel the need to keep an eye on me anymore, that’s for sure. Rsv is in for a surprise.

Jack: I can’t do this.

Diane: Jack, please.

Jack: I hear everything that you’re saying, I understand how you think this is important. It’s not fair. I love you. I trust you. I know how much you’ve changed. I know there are no ulterior motives. Isn’t that enough?

Diane: All right, let’s be honest. Only you and kyle have accepted me since I’ve come back.

Jack: And michael.

Diane: Oh, a whole three people.

Jack: Like I said earlier, to hell with the rest of them.

Diane: Yeah, but that’s easier for you to say than– than it is for me to live with. I hear the gossip. Okay? I see how people look at me when I walk into a room, and I just want it to stop. That’s all. I– I– god knows, I– I have earned their doubts about me, but this document would erase all that. And it would show everyone that all I want… all I’ve ever wanted… is your love.

Jack: You have that. Look, this is gonna convince some people, yes, but I wouldn’t count on it convincing ashley.

Tucker: What, did you follow me last night?

Ashley: I was looking for you. And then I found you, and so I followed you.

Tucker: Okay. I went to the bar for a drink.

Ashley: How did you end up in audra’s room, tucker?

Tucker: Not for the reason I’m sure you think.

Ashley: What is that reason? Why were you there?

Tucker: Okay, it’s probably time I come clean with you about this.

Ashley: Good idea.

Tucker: I’m sorry that I haven’t before. Um… well, first of all, kyle– honey, listen to me. Kyle was in audra’s room the entire time I was there. If you’re questioning me, give him a call. Come here.

[ Ashley sobs ] Sit down. Okay. Here’s the truth. A few years ago… one of the major artists signed to the mccall label got involved with an underage girl.

Ashley: Oh, my god.

Tucker: I was not in charge of the company at that time, but I knew if it came out, it would sink it.

Ashley: So, you covered it up.

Tucker: Yes, I told– well, no. I told audra to fix it and she did. Uh, but recently adam newman found some old emails regarding it and used them to blackmail audra, so he could get his hands on newman media.

Ashley: How did adam get involved in all of this?

Tucker: Oh, god, it’s so complicated. Phyllis– phyllis asked him to help get me off her back. But it’s been handled. Okay?

Ashley: Handled, like?

Tucker: Well, no more emails and no more blackmail, that kind of thing.

Ashley: Okay. All right, that’s good. Hold on a second. If I hadn’t asked you, would you have ever told me this?

Billy: So, how’s school?

Connor: I hate it.

Billy: How come?

Connor: I don’t have any friends. Except for johnny. Now he and katie are going to another school in the fall, so I won’t have anybody.

Billy: Yeah. Yeah, that’s tough. I’m sorry about that.

Connor: And then I thought I was going to have a baby sister. It’s just– nothing is good. Nothing is right. I don’t wanna be here anymore. I don’t want to go back to walnut grove.

Billy: Well, if it’s just about the school then, you know, that could be fixed. You can talk to your mom and dad about that. You can find a school that you like.

Connor: Yeah, but anywhere else I go, I’d still be the weird kid with the disturbed mom and a dad who’s always getting into trouble. And when I try to defend them…

Billy: What?

Connor: Nothing.

Billy: Are you being bullied? Look, I know it’s tough to talk about this kind of stuff, but it’s helpful. If you just keep it inside, it gets– it gets bottled up and you end up exploding.

Connor: I hate that I feel this way. But I don’t want to tell my mom because I don’t want her to worry about me. She may not be able to handle it and she’ll be the way she was.

Billy: Connor, your mom is stronger than you think. She really is. And I promise you the most important thing in her whole world is you making sure that you feel strong, that you’re happy. That’s her number one priority, I promise you that.

Connor: I guess so.

Billy: No, I know so. And you gotta let the people that love you know how you feel. Okay, and it’s important and I promise you, they’re not gonna let you down.

Connor: I’m tired.

Billy: Okay. Why don’t you go upstairs and… take a little nap, maybe get some rest.

Connor: Thanks.

Billy: Any time. Hey, connor, uh, went upstairs. He was feeling a little tired.

Chelsea: Okay, um–

Billy: Thank you.

Chelsea: Did he open up to you?

Billy: Yeah. Yeah, a little bit. I feel like we had a good talk. I think.

Chelsea: And?

Billy: Sounds like he’s being bullied at school. He doesn’t want to go back.

[ Chelsea sighs ]

Chelsea: Okay, well, uh, we’ll switch schools.

Billy: Yeah, it’s not just that, um… this is kind of tough, chels, but it sounds like it has to do with you and adam. He feels like he has to defend you and, uh, and you know, kids can be cruel.

[ Chelsea sighs ]

Chelsea: Well, that breaks my heart.

Billy: I know. Hey, you know, I didn’t– I didn’t tell you that to make you feel bad, obviously. I just think it’s important that you know.

Chelsea: Of course, yeah, of course. Thank you for talking to him.

Billy: I don’t want to speak out of turn, but you and I both know that feeling of hopelessness… and I’m afraid that connor’s headed in that direction.

Adam: Well, since I’m responsible for getting you caught up in his games, the least I can do is offer you a job, again.

Sally: Adam, no.

Adam: Come on, it’s not charity. I already told you what an incredible asset you would be to the new company, sally

Sally: Adam, did you not hear anything I said earlier? Us working together again, it’s never gonna happen for so many reasons. I am not reconsidering. Okay? And since you’ve already blown your chance at newman, you don’t really need me.

Adam: Look, I’m not giving up on newman media or this merger, it’s going to happen eventually. Not only because it’s a savvy business move, but because I deserve it.

Sally: Okay, adam, maybe you should stop thinking so much about what you deserve and start appreciating what you actually have, which, unlike me, is a company to run that has every chance of being very successful. Postmenopausal women with hr+ her2-

Chelsea: I mean, it’s not like we haven’t tried to get connor help. But every time we suggest he talk to someone else, he just shuts down.

Billy: Yeah, no, it’s the worst feeling in the world knowing that your kid is hurting and doesn’t feel like there’s anything you can do to fix it.

Chelsea: Oh, sorry.

Billy: It’s okay.

Chelsea: Hey, mom, everything okay? He did what? No, no, I’m glad you called me. Um, I’ll take care of it, if he calls you back just… okay, thank you. Thank you so much.

[ Chelsea scoffs ]

Billy: What is it?

Chelsea: Connor just went upstairs and called anita and asked her if he could move in with her for a while.

[ Chelsea scoffs ] Clearly, he wants to get away from genoa city. Which makes me think he wants to get away from me too.

Diane: I don’t think you should assume how ashley would react to you signing the post-nup.

Jack: She’s my sister, I know how her mind works, honey, she’s gonna look for catches and loopholes.

Diane: Yeah, but there aren’t any loopholes. It says straight up that if something goes wrong with the marriage, I walk away with nothing from you. What would her argument be then?

Jack: I’m sure she’d find some argument.

Diane: Look, ashley thinks that I wanted to marry you so that I could be the queen to your king, and I could get all the money and all the power while you signing this document puts a lie to that. And it also might go a little way into healing the family. At least it could be a start.

Jack: You’re ready to fight for this, aren’t you?

Diane: I’m fighting for us. It’s important for me to make this statement to you. Even though you say you don’t need it, I need it. So, can you just sign it, jack?

[ Diane chuckles ] What are you doing?

Jack: I am sending this to ashley. My way of letting her know what she can do with her suspicions.

Adam: Yes, I should be more grateful. You’re right. As usual.

Sally: Adam, please stop trying to make me feel better.

Adam: Look I– I– I hate that my father did this to you. And I wanna help in any way that I can. If you won’t accept my job offer, then maybe–

Sally: I will be all right. Okay? Really, when– when one door closes, another one smacks you in the ass and– and all that. Unfortunately, I cannot go back to chancellor-winters because they moved on to another firm whenever they found out about your father’s offer. A firm, actually, that your father recommended.

Adam: I’m really sorry.

Sally: Yeah, me too. Guess chloe and i just have to start back at square one. Get more clients or at least one client… more cold calls, more pitch decks. Super fun. Really, though, I’m gonna be fine. I always land on my feet.

[ Sally sighs ] I just can’t help wondering if this was all a tease. Victor just showing how in control of everything he is just because he can.

Adam: I’m not saying that he isn’t capable of that, but I don’t think so. This is all about me. Making sure that I know my place.

Tucker: I would have told you definitely, eventually.

[ Ashley chuckles ]

Ashley: Eventually? That’s kind of vague.

Tucker: I think I would have told you when I felt the timing was right. The timing has not been right, I’ve been thinking about our wedding, I’ve been thinking about us. I did not want to be distracted by some long ago mess that had already been resolved.

Ashley: Okay. Listen, I’m not thrilled about this mess. Underage girls. That’s so disgusting.

Tucker: I know, it is totally disgusting. And, like I said, I knew nothing about it till the guy went to jail. And the cover up was engineered by the mccall pr team who I fired, every one of them, when I found out what they’d done. So, audra was really just covering up the cover. And I just felt like she had to. I mean, can you imagine what it could have done had it come out? Right? You can appreciate that.

Ashley: I appreciate that, yeah, but you’re not even heading up mccall–

Tucker: But now I’m doing our thing. We’re starting our venture. I don’t think it would be a very good look if it came out just as we’re beginning.

Ashley: So, you did it to protect me?

Tucker: Yes, I did it–

[ Both laugh ]

Ashley: Okay.

Tucker: I did it all to protect you and to just give us one less battle to fight. I think we’ve had enough, don’t you?

Ashley: Yeah. What?

Tucker: What now?

Ashley: Yeah.

Diane: What more can ashley want? She married tucker, she took her share of jabot, and she’s starting a new business. What is possibly left for her to fight about?

Ashley: Hmm. Did you find a loophole?

Tucker: Not yet.

Ashley: Well, I’m sure diane has found some way to weasel the abbott fortune out of jack’s hands.

Tucker: I don’t know. It looks like a pretty standard agreement to me. If the marriage ends.

Ashley: When the marriage ends.

Tucker: When the marriage ends, diane pretty much gets whatever she came in with, no more.

Ashley: Believe that when I see it.

Tucker: I don’t know. Maybe jack’s learned his lesson.

Ashley: Thanks to me?

Tucker: Yes, you’ve been hammering away at him for so long about how dangerous diane is, maybe he has found himself an escape clause.

Ashley: It’s very neat and tidy though, don’t you think?

Tucker: I see, you don’t buy it.

Ashley: I don’t know, why now? Who signs a post-nup? Why did jack change his mind now?

Chelsea: Connor’s gone.

Billy: What do you mean?

Chelsea: What, he’s– he’s not in the apartment. His backpack is gone… and so were some of his clothes.

Chelsea: Yes, I– I know, I just called, but my son is missing, and I’m terrified, so– okay, I’d appreciate that, thank you. Did connor call you?

Adam: No.

Billy: Chelsea, it’s gonna be okay.

Chance: Yeah, we covered every possible route out of town. I don’t think connor’s gotten that far.

Billy: I don’t know. Listen, maybe this is a cry for help, okay? And– and he didn’t know anyone else to go to.

Connor: My dad told me about the baby. I’m really sorry.

Sally: I am too.

Connor: Are you okay?

Sally: Yeah, it’s been sad and hard but it gets better every day. What about you?

Connor: I’m okay.

Sally: Where are you off to?

Connor: Just going to a friend’s house. No big deal.

Sally: It’s pretty hot today, isn’t it?

Connor: Yeah, kinda.

Sally: You know, I would really like some water. There is a kiosk right over there. Would you mind maybe going to get me one and– here, get one for yourself too, please?

Connor: Okay.

Sally: Thank you. Adam. Hi, it’s me. Did you give connor permission to go to a friend’s house on his own?

Tucker: You know what I think?

Ashley: I think I’m afraid to ask.

Tucker: I think we need to get out of the abbott house. Like, right now.

Ashley: Where do you wanna go?

Tucker: Literally anywhere you want. I’m serious. I love you so much. I just– I’m ready to start a whole new chapter with you. We just got married, and we live with your brother. I think we can do better. I think we can afford our own place and I think it should be fantastic. What do you think?

Jack: Hey, billy, I got your text, uh, ashley seems to be laying low at the moment. I was hoping that between the marriage and my gift of giving her her share of jabot might calm the waters, but this might just be the calm before the storm. Anyway, I want to both be on the same page. I’ll see you at the office.

[ Diane sighs ]

Diane: So much for my toast to abbott family unity.

Jack: Honey, I know my sister. I know how her mind works. As much as I’d like to think otherwise, I don’t think this is over.

Diane: All right, fine. Could we maybe enjoy at least five minutes of this nice morning together?

Jack: How about ten?

Diane: Okay. When it comes to your hair, ingredients matter.

Adam: Okay, sounds good. All right, we’ll see you soon. Connor is with sally.

Chelsea: Oh! Thank god. Where? Is he all right?

Adam: Yes, they’re okay, they’re in the park. She’s gonna talk to him, she’s gonna convince him to come home.

Chelsea: Okay, well, I– I need to see him.

Adam: Chels, let’s just– let’s give her a little time.

Chelsea: Oh, my god. Well, I– I mean, I need to talk to connor. I need to understand why he wanted to run away.

Billy: Of course, but I– I think adam’s right. Just a little bit of space will be good for him right now.

Billy: Hey, he’s gonna be all right, okay? He’s safe and so are you.

Sally: Thank you. This really hit the spot.

Connor: Are you okay now? Because I have to head over to my friend’S.

Sally: Um, I– would you mind hanging out with me a little longer? Please? I just– I miss you and– and I want to catch up. What’s been going on with you these days?

Connor: Nothing much. Just, you know… stuff.

Sally: What kind of stuff? Mm. Don’t want to talk about it, I see.

Connor: Nothing to talk about.

Sally: I get it. I do. Sometimes it’s hard to talk about things. I remember when people first started asking me about the baby. I– I didn’t want to go there. I didn’t even want to think about it. You know, but sometimes… if you’re hurt… or sad or angry or… you know, just confused about things, it really does help to talk to people. I have a feeling you have a lot on your mind. Am I wrong about that?

Connor: I’m not really going to my friend’S.

Sally: Were you thinking about running away? Mm. I get it. I’ve run away a bunch of times in my life.

Connor: Really?

Sally: Yes, and I was a lot older than you. You know, I– I thought that if I just took off that all of my problems would just disappear with me. But guess what? They followed me everywhere I went, and they did not go away until I figured out what I needed to do.

Connor: That’s just it. I don’t know what to do.

Sally: You’ll figure it out. But it’s really hard to have that happen if you keep it all inside. You should tell the people that love you and care about you what’s going on. You just talk to them like you’re talking to me. I did call your dad. He and your mom are waiting for you at the coffee house. Would you let me walk you back there?

Ashley: Hey.

Jack: Oh, no, is the honeymoon already over?

Ashley: Hardly, we came by to pick up our stuff.

Tucker: Yes, as much fun as this has been, I think it’s time for us to move on, so if you wouldn’t mind forwarding any mail we get to the club till we find a place.

Ashley: And regarding that post-nup, you sent me, uh, how much begging did you have to do to get diane to agree to it?

Diane: Actually, it was my idea.

Ashley: Really?

Jack: Yeah, she’s telling the truth. I didn’t want to sign it, but she insisted. Michael baldwin drew it up. Ask him.

Diane: Yeah. Hey, congrats again.

Ashley: Do you buy any of that?

Tucker: Actually, I do. It might be time for us to accept the idea that she genuinely loves him, and it’s time for all this to end.

Ashley: I don’t know.

Adam: Hey, buddy.

Chelsea: Oh, connor. Oh, my god. Oh, we were so worried.

Connor: Sorry.

Adam: Look, whatever it is, buddy, we’re here to help.

Connor: I don’t wanna be here. I don’t wanna go back to walnut grove. I wanna go see grandma and go to school near her. I hate this town. Please don’t make me stay.

Kyle: This feels like kind of a test. And your questions aren’t really about me. They’re about audra.

Jill: Well, you’re gonna have your plate full with the business and– and crimson lights.

Sharon: Which is why I asked you to come over today.

Heather: I didn’t share my plans right away because I wasn’t sure how you’d really feel about me sticking around town.

Daniel: I think it’s fantastic.

Sharon: Hey! You’re back from your trip. How did it go?

Nick: It was great. The foreign mccall divisions are all completely on board with kirsten incorporated and excited about the merger and the future of the company.

Sharon: Wow, and that’s terrible news.

Nick: No. It’s actually fantastic. What’s not fantastic is that adam is now resorting to blackmail to ensure that newman media merges with our new company.

Sharon: Oh, no.

Nick: Another not fantastic thing is dad refuses to fire adam because he doesn’t wanna risk losing the financing that we just secured. Yet another not fantastic thing, my whole future right now, my success, hinges on my amoral brother not screwing everything up and we both know that is exactly what he is going to do.

Sharon: Okay, nick.

Nick: Adam is more of a liability than ever and my father doesn’t seem to care about it.

Sharon: May I say something?

Nick: Sure. As long as it’s not calm down.

Sharon: No, it’s not calm down.

Nick: Okay, then go ahead.

Sharon: Victor refusing to let adam go is par for the course. There’s no surprise there. And there’s no surprise in adam being adam, going after what he wants using any means available to him. We are where we are. We both want this to work. We just have to figure out how. We can do that and we will do that. Oh, no. There’s something more going on, isn’t there? What happened?

Sally: Thank you.

Adam: Hey. You’re in a good mood.

Sally: I am. Yeah. I’m meeting with your father today to tell him I’m accepting his job offer. I’m really excited about it.

Adam: I hope it’s everything that you want.

Sally: Thank you.

[ Sally sighing ] Is this about last night?

Adam: What? No, I’m just– just, uh, got a lot on my mind.

Sally: Can we talk about it?

Adam: What? About the photos that I kept of us? I thought we already covered that.

Sally: I’m not talking about the photos. You said that there was something that you wanted to talk to me about whenever we got back from victor and then nick showed up and you never got around to it and I’m– I’m curious. What was it?

Victoria: Honestly, I– I mean, I thought that we had already settled this. Johnny and katie love boarding school. They’re excited at the possibility of going back. I don’t understand. Why are you hesitating?

Billy: I like having my kids near us, you know? I’m not– look, let me ask you. Are– are you– you want them going away to boarding school because you do believe that’s the best thing for them or are you okay with them going away because that gives you time to focus on your work and your relationship with nate?

Victoria: What? You cannot seriously be accusing me of sending the kids away so I can fixate on my love life. Don’t even dare go there, billy. You haven’t approved of anyone that I’ve been involved with.

Billy: How many times have I been right?

Victoria: You haven’t been wrong in some cases. You know, I’m starting to wonder if maybe you have a problem with me being happy without you. Is that– is that what you want, billy? You want for me to be miserable?

Billy: I’ve never, ever wanted that. So, either you don’t know me well enough, which I don’t think is true, or something is– is really wrong right now.

Victor: Nate! Thank goodness. Come in.

Nate: Victor, uh, thanks for seeing me.

Victor: Yeah. Please have a seat, nate. So, what can I do for you?

Nate: I’ll get right to the point.

Victor: Okay.

Nate: You and I haven’t had the chance to talk since audra’s plan about the merger came out. I wanted to, uh, clear up any suspicions you might have about my involvement in it. I’m concerned that you and your family might think I overstepped. If things aren’t okay between us, tell me what I can do to make it right. Want luxury hair repair that doesn’t cost $50?

Nick: So, you don’t think it’s enough that adam is manipulating every single situation to get exactly what he wants, all while jeopardizing what we’re trying to build in the process? Unless, of course, you think blackmail is warranted at times.

Sharon: Stop it. We shouldn’t be focusing on adam’s actions. We need to look at the bigger picture. It’s not surprising what his ultimate goal is, despite the despicable way he went about trying to get it. He wants what we want, to build our company into a massively successful powerhouse. Joining forces with newman media, that’s smart, it’s innovative.

Nick: But you think it’s gonna stop there? It’s not, sharon. He doesn’t want this merger for the right reasons. This is about to sticking it to victoria and you saying it’s just adam being adam is a lousy justification for what he’s doing.

Sharon: That’s true and I do expect more from him.

Nick: You know, if this was about just some shady business move, I might be able to deal with that, maybe. Probably. But it’s not. This is personal and it’s vindictive. Adam doesn’t want what we want. Adam is only focused on one thing and one thing only, and that is getting back what he thinks was stolen from him. And I promise you, he will burn everything in his way to get that.

Victoria: You’re right. I do know you better than that. I was out of line. I’m sorry.

Billy: I’m sorry, okay? Victoria, you are an amazing mother, okay? We know that. Our kids wouldn’t be the incredible kids they are if it weren’t for you.

Victoria: And yet, you have an issue with me and nate.

Billy: It’s more of a concern than an issue, okay? Because I– I– I can’t help it. I think you deserve better than what you’ve had in the past. Ashland, jt… me.

Victoria: Eh. You know. All things considered, you weren’t really that bad.

Billy: All things considered meaning that I didn’t actually fake cancer or try to kill you? Yeah, you’re right. I probably should get points for that.

Victoria: It’s the little things.

Billy: You know if something’s going wrong right now, you can talk to me about it, right?

Victoria: And if something weren’t wrong, per se, but maybe just not quite right?

Billy: Yeah, that– that falls into the same category.

Victoria: All right. But you have to promise not to turn around and use this against me or nate.

Billy: No judgment. No ulterior motives.

Victoria: It’s complicated and I can’t really get into all of it.

Billy: Okay, that’s fine. Just tell me what you can.

Victoria: Nate came across some information that could’ve damaged newman if it got out and he wanted to parlay it into a very risky business move.

Billy: What reason did he give you?

Victoria: He claimed that he kept it a secret because he was protecting the company and as a favor to a trusted colleague that asked for his discretion. But the thing is, he kept it from me as well, saying that he was trying to protect me too. Obviously, I have to wonder… can I really believe him? Should I really trust him? I don’t know. Is there something he’s not telling me that I should know?

Nate: As we all know, I, uh, I screwed up big time at chancellor-winters. I was ambitious and self-serving. My first loyalty was to myself instead of my family.

Victor: Okay.

Nate: When I got to newman enterprises and started to really get involved in the company and the honor of working there, my loyalties shifted to newman and obviously, victoria. When this whole audra thing came along, I honestly didn’t give one single thought to how I might be able to use it to my advantage. All I could think about was making sure the mccall scandal didn’t go public and damage newman media and ultimately, newman enterprises.

Victor: I appreciate that.

Nate: Victor, I was trying to protect the company and victoria. And yes, audra too because, with all due respect, victor, I found adam’s attempt to blackmail her despicable.

Victor: Is that it?

Nate: Right or wrong, that’s it.

Victor: All right, nate. I want you to know that I appreciate you coming here, meeting me face to face, man to man, and I appreciate your loyalty toward newman enterprises and especially, your loyalty to my daughter.

Nate: I am glad to hear that, sir. So, um, are we good?

Victor: For the time being.

Adam: Well, if you’re accepting my dad’s offer to work at newman, then what I was going to talk to you about is– is a moot point.

Sally: Okay, now I’m even more curious.

Adam: I was going to try to convince you to work with me when newman media merged with adustus. You would’ve been perfect for it. You’re the only one that knows newman media as well as I do.

Sally: Wow. Well, thank you for saying that.

Adam: But I don’t know when the merger is going to happen, if ever, and when and if it does, I don’t even know if I will be there. I suspect that my days at adustus are numbered. (Vo) wish you knew what your cat was feeling?

Nick: You know, if I thought adam had put us through all of this for the good of the company and it wasn’t just some power move against dad or vic, I probably wouldn’t be so pissed off.

Sharon: Okay, well, let’s take adam out of the equation for a minute. Let’s say that it’s just you and me. We would fight for the merger in a heartbeat. And I’ll bet you that victor’s objection is about nothing more than keeping adam down.

Nick: Well, I hate to say I told you so.

Sharon: No, you don’T.

[ Nick chuckling ]

Nick: I just knew working with this human wrecking ball was gonna be a big mistake.

Sharon: Do you regret this?

Nick: No, I don’t regret it at all. I think we are on the verge of accomplishing something very cool. What I cannot stand is that adam could undermine the whole thing and we’re stuck with him.

[ Nick sighing ]

Sally: Hopefully, you are just being paranoid, but yeah, I mean, you can’t really offer me a job if you don’t have one yourself.

Adam: Well, victor claims I’m on thin ice, but it hasn’t cracked through yet, so we’ll see how long that lasts.

Sally: Well, because you decided to blackmail someone to get your way.

Adam: I really wish everyone would stop using the word “blackmail.” I mean, it’s really ugly. It’s extreme. I went after something that I believed in. Nobody was gonna get hurt and in the end, it still would’ve been business as usual. But, it didn’t work.

Sally: If it was just business as usual, it wouldn’t have mattered so much. You’re trying to prove yourself to your father and probably, also to yourself. It is okay to admit that.

Adam: I have often wondered, usually around two o’clock in the morning, if admitting what something really means to me, if it’s inviting trouble, if it’s inviting fate to take it away from me. I just have been so close to getting what I really want so many times and yet, here I sit, not a lot to show for it, so why admit it in the first place?

Billy: Can you trust nate? Hm, uh, I don’t know. Can you trust nate? I mean, he’s a smart guy, of course. You’re obviously attracted to him. What else do you know about him?

Victoria: He’s ambitious. So am I. I think he is learning that he actually enjoys being ruthless. He can compartmentalize enough to go behind his family’s back for a deal, and I believe that he would probably sell out audra charles in a heartbeat if he felt cornered. Or if he felt like it would be to his advantage to lose her.

Billy: So, he would sell out his family, he would sell out a colleague. He would probably sell out almost anyone, including you?

Victoria: No. No. He would not do that to me.

Billy: No? How do you know that?

Victoria: Because nate’s tactics and his goals are completely different when it comes to me. He told me that his ultimate fantasy and what he dreams about is working side by side with me and running an empire together and I believe him.

Billy: His dream is to run an empire with you, side by side?

Victoria: Yeah. I mean, you don’t think that he means it?

Billy: No, I don’t think that’s the problem. I think that anyone that expresses that kind of hubris about anything is– is a little bit, uh, is a little bit dangerous, even when they’re being sincere. Take it from a guy that knows a guy, okay? And when we screw up, all that’s left is collateral damage and I think you’ve had enough of that to last a lifetime.

Victor: I’d like you to take a look at this.

Nate: I’d be happy to. What is it?

Victor: Well, those are financial projections for adustus put together by nicholas and sharon and adam. Go through it, tell me what you think about it.

Nate: I’m, uh, I’m on it. You want my opinion on it?

Victor: Nate, you are now the coo of newman enterprises and as such, I expect you to be acquainted with all the divisions of this magnificent company.

Nate: I couldn’t agree more. I will read every word of it and give you my immediate feedback. My honest feedback.

Victor: I expect nothing less. My late father-in-law lit up a room,

Sharon: Nick, you and i both know that our new company is off to a very strong start. Stronger than even adam could jeopardize. I think that you are making this as personal as you claim that he is.

Nick: Please understand, I’m just trying to protect our company. I have lived through years and years of watching adam act selfishly and ruthlessly. For all his talk about healing and dealing with the past, the bottom line is he cannot be trusted. He just can’T. Not in business, not with sally. Sure, I said it. This has to do with sally as well. You know, he’s taking advantage of the situation. He’s trying to rekindle their relationship. Now, I’m confident sally won’t let that happen, but I cannot stand it that he keeps putting her in this awkward position. You know, she’s working so hard to get back on her feet after they lost their baby. I’m telling you, he cannot let it go. He won’t let it go.

Sharon: Well, if that’s the case, that sounds like adam’s problem, not yours, not sally’S. There’s nothing either one of you could do to change how he feels.

Nick: Well, he has no respect for her feelings. He keeps saying how much he loves her. He keeps making it about himself. It’s reprehensible.

Sharon: Why does any of this matter if you say that sally won’t be getting involved with adam again? What are you worried about? Maybe adam’s not the only one who’s having a hard time letting go. Maybe you’re having a hard time letting go of your hatred for your brother.

Sally: Yes, I know that 2 A.M. Thought spiral all too well. My personal favorite is the one where I decide I know exactly how something’s gonna play out, get all worked up about it, only to find out I could not have been more wrong.

Adam: Yep, that definitely sounds familiar.

Sally: Yeah. Just last night, I was lying awake wondering what it was that you wanted to talk to me about after you got back from victor’s and I had convinced myself that it was about us and trying again, another chance. Never even entered my mind that you were going to offer me a job.

Adam: Were you surprised or were you disappointed?

Sally: Um, let’s not go there. Really. My– my– my point is is that the thoughts in the middle of the night are usually not very healthy, like you losing sleep pretending that victor is gonna change if you defy him often enough or figure out all the ways that you can defy him so you can prove to him and the rest of the world that you can, I mean… admit it, that has to be exhausting.

Adam: Oh, there is no doubt about that.

Sally: So, since trying to fight your way to the top isn’t working, maybe try cooperating? Just do your job and do it well, and stop making trouble and stop picking fights with nick.

Adam: Nick started it.

Sally: Stop acting like you’re five years old. Maybe it’s time to give up the adrenaline rush of creating chaos. Seriously. Why not? What do you have to lose?

Adam: Hm.

Nate: Hey, how’s it going?

Victoria: Not bad. And you?

Nate: I, uh, I just got back from a meeting at the ranch with your father. It was a– a pre-emptive move on my part. I wanted to make sure he understood why I handled the whole audra situation the way I did.

Victoria: Oh. And how did that go?

Nate: Really well.

Victoria: Seriously?

Nate: Yeah, yeah. I was surprised too.

Victoria: Huh. Well, I’m glad to hear that. You’ll have to tell me about it later though. I lost a lot of time this morning talking to billy about the kids.

Nate: About boarding school? Well, not that it’s any of my business, but, um, I think you’re absolutely right about wanting them to go. You said they both love it there and it would give them a chance to pursue some of the new interests they’ve been telling you about. I mean, from what I read, the school has a first class soccer program that johnny would love and katie would have a chance to keep up with the ballet classes and continue working on becoming an equestrian like her mother.

Victoria: I had no idea that you were listening so closely when I go on about my kids.

Nate: I always listen. Anything that’s important to you is important to me. Somedays, I cover up because of my moderate

Nate: Yes, I am genuinely interested in what’s going on with your kids, and yes, I am trying to smooth things over between us, but if this is a bad time.

Victoria: Nate. Please, sit down. I’m gonna get a lot more work done if you just say whatever it is that you want to say, so go on.

Nate: I can’t help but feel that something shifted between us after you found out that I kept my actions from you, even though I was trying to protect the company.

Victoria: I won’t deny that. Trust is more important to me than anything.

Nate: And I betrayed it. I should never have done that and I regret the hell out of it. And it will never, ever happen again. Which you have no reason to believe just because I’m saying it. But if you give me time, give me a chance, I will prove it to you. I will do whatever it takes to make things right between us. Just tell me it’s not too late. I’ve got too much to lose.

Victoria: Yes, I know. You’ve made it clear how important your coo position is to you.

Nate: Victoria, I’m not talking about the job. I’m not talking about newman. I’m talking about losing you. Losing us. I can’t let that happen. You and I have an extraordinary personal connection. The way we think, our priorities, the way we approach problems. I have tried my best not to let my feelings interfere with that or jeopardize it in any way, but I can’t deny the fact that our other connection, our personal connection, the affection, the attraction, it’s becoming stronger and more important to me every single day.

Adam: Well, I have to hand it to you, sally, you are not the woman you were at newman media. You have outgrown a lot of those old self-destructive behaviors. Sometimes, I wonder if I ever will. Maybe that’s why I was hoping that you would accept my job offer and, uh, the new you would rub off on me.

Sally: Well, I’m touched that that even occurred to you, but, I mean, we can’t go back to working together anymore than we can rekindle our relationship.

Adam: Has it really gone that far? I mean, I understand why you wouldn’t want to be in a relationship with me, but that doesn’t have to apply to work, does it?

Sally: Adam, you are not able to separate your career from your emotions any more than I used to be able to. I mean, you lead with your emotions in every single thing that you do. Us working together again, yes, you might try and keep it all business all the time, but I just– I really don’t think you can. It’s not who you are and my being there just would not be fair to you.

Adam: So, you’re protecting me?

Sally: I’m protecting us. Look, I might not feel the same way that I used to, but it does not make me happy to see you hurting.

Adam: No, you’re probably right. I’d end up with my heart broken again and true to form, I would end up resenting you. It was a bad idea on my part. I don’t blame you for turning me down, even if you weren’t going to work for my dad, where I know that you will knock it out of the park, by the way.

Sharon: I feel safe in saying that sally can handle herself when it comes to adam, or anything else for that matter. She’s not gonna let him get under her skin and I want you to do the same thing. Don’t let adam get under your skin or else it could complicate things at the company. Or even in your relationship with sally, for that matter.

Nick: You think I want that? I mean, everywhere I go, every facet of my life, there’s adam. Always adam and I’m just… I’m tired of it.

Sharon: I get it. I do. But let’s be realistic about this, adam is not going anywhere, at least not right now and every time you let him get to you, he wins.

Nick: You’re right.

Sharon: Look at it this way, adam is not the devil incarnate, he’s not the golden child. Adam is just adam and pretty much every destructive action he takes is a reaction to you or your father or the way that anybody else treats him. The only thing that you can control in this equation is you. It’s time to stop focusing on what adam does and focus on the things that you can do something about and stop making me wonder if I made a mistake bringing kirsten incorporated into this mix.

Nick: Yeah. My heart failure diagnosis changed my priorities.

Nick: You know what? You’re right. Adam doesn’t deserve the bandwidth I’ve been giving him and I could be putting it to much better use, especially towards our new company.

Sharon: That’s what I like to hear. What do you have in mind?

Nick: Well, we have a corporate majority right here and we can start with something that has been driving me absolutely crazy since we started this and that is the stupid, stupid name, adustus. I hate it so much. Let’s just get rid of it. Let’s– let’s call ourselves, um… S.N.A. Media.

Sharon: Sharon, nick, adam. I love it!

Nick: It’s clean. I love it. And maybe adam will hate it, and if we get lucky, he’ll quit.

Sally: Speaking of your father’s offer, I really should get to the ranch and give him the good news.

Adam: Congratulations, sally. You know, I’m happy for, um, for both of you.

Sally: Thank you. Hey… we have gotten through the worse of losing ava, and I am… letting go of my anger towards you. I may not always show it, but I just hope you know that.

Adam: Thank you for, uh, telling me that. It means a lot.

Victoria: On an intellectual level, I understand what you did, but emotionally, I feel lied to.

Nate: I never lied to you–

Victoria: A lie of omission is still a lie. So, tell me something. If I hadn’t pushed you to come clean about what you and audra were up to, would you have ever told me?

Nate: Honestly? Probably not. Until it was all said and done with and I could brag to you about what a great job I had done handling it on my own. I had my heart set on being your hero. As wrong as it was, I want you to admire me someday as much as I admire you. I wanna be worthy of you because I’m falling in love with you.

Sally: Hello, victor.

Victor: Hello, sally. Thank you for coming.

Sally: Yeah, thank you for taking the time to see me.

Victor: We need to talk.

Sally: Yes, we do. I know that you are very busy man, but I thought that it would be better to have this conversation face to face. I have decided to accept your offer to head up the new media division at newman enterprises.

Victor: Sorry to hear that. If you’re taking an antidepressant

Sally: You’re sorry to hear that I’m accepting your offer? I… I don’t understand.

Victor: Have a seat. Sally, there won’t be a design division at newman enterprises. Not now, not ever because I want to devote all my energies to straightening out adustus. And to working on the constant rivalry between my two sons. I want them to work together as a team.

Sally: I see. So, is this a temporary decision on your part or a more permanent one?

Victor: No. There will be no design division at newman enterprises. Not now, not ever.

Sally: Well, that is a shame since I set aside my chancellor-winters account to accept his offer and I can’t really go back thanks to the company you found them to replace us. Did– it– I’m so sorry. Tell me. Did you– did you dangle this in front of me just to yank it away to punish me for getting involved with both of your sons?

Victor: I don’t do that. You’re a businesswoman and as such, you know that one makes tough decisions for the good of the company. So, thank you for coming by and now I need to devote myself to a conference call, all right? Good luck, sally.

Sally: Okay.

Sharon: So excited. I love it.

Adam: You guys wanted to see me?

Nick: Wanted is a pretty strong word. Yes, of course, adam. We did. Sit down.

Adam: So, I’m guessing there’s a reason that you asked me to meet you here.

Sharon: Two reasons, actually. Nick and I have made a few big decisions about the company we thought you should know about right away.

Adam: Okay.

Sharon: Well, first of all, we think we have found the perfect office location. Our realtor just sent us these photos.

Nick: There were two other bidders. We put in a higher offer ’cause we wanted it, so it’s ours. Hope you like it.

Adam: It looks good. That sounds great.

Sharon: Well, I’m glad you’re as excited about it as we are. The other decision you may not handle as well, but we feel very strongly about it. Do you want to tell him or should I tell him?

Nick: No, you’re doing great.

Adam: Okay, guys. Just– come on. Just tell me.

Sharon: We’ve decided to change the company name from adustus to S.N.A. Media.

[ Adam laughing ]

Adam: S.N.A. Media. I like it! Yeah, it’s– that’s good. It’s much better to remember than adustus, which, I admit, was really– it was stupid, wasn’t it?

Nick: Yeah, it was stupid. I mean, you look like adam. I might need to see some id or something.

Sharon: Could you please just take yes for an answer.

Adam: No, it’s– it’s okay.

Nick: No. She’s right. I was being a smart ass. You really like the name?

Adam: I really do.

Sharon: Well, this meeting is going very differently than I expected it to go.

Adam: I know the feeling.

[ Adam exhaling ] Look, I’m sure that you guys were, um, expecting me to come in here and– and brace yourselves for battle. I don’t blame you guys, but I’m tired. I don’t wanna do it anymore. I don’t wanna ruin what we’re building here. It’s all I have left.

Nate: Clearly, that’s not what you were expecting to hear, but yes, I am falling in love with you. But victoria, please know I’m not saying that to try to win you back or force your hand.

Victoria: Good, good because to be perfectly honest, I have no idea what I’m feeling right now.

Nate: That’s understandable.

Victoria: Having the man that I am involved with keeping things from me is not something that I can shrug off so easily like it’s no big deal.

Nate: Nor should you. It’s a very big deal and I will do anything and everything I can to regain that trust and respect.

Victoria: I can’t do this right now. I’m sorry. I’m hours behind and I have to get caught up. In fact, I might need you to cover the bennett meeting for me. You’re up to speed on that, aren’t you?

Nate: Consider it done.

Sally: I’m surprised you still have these.

Adam: Why wouldn’t I?

Sally: Just seeing them brings back a lot of memories. But…

Adam: But what?

Sally: It’s just not healthy to hold on to the past. We both– we have– we have to find a way to move forward.

Adam: I understand what you’re saying, but these photos, they represent a time when I was truly happy. It’s hard to just forget about that.

Sally: Yeah, I know. Yeah, we had something really special. Something I will always cherish.

Adam: And you moved on. I know. Doesn’t mean I need to pretend that you and i were never together.

Sally: I’m not asking you to pretend.

Adam: No. You want me to forget all together. But I never thought you would even see these. And I promise, I was not laying a trap to remind you how happy we were or how much we loved each other. I was not inflicting my feelings on you. You went snooping.

Sally: Yeah, I was just tidying up. Just trying to help.

[ Sally chuckling ]

Adam: You were decorating for me. The discussion about moving on was just a bonus.

[ Sally sighing ]

Sally: I really want you to find happiness. To find someone who loves you the way that you deserve to be loved.

Adam: Sally, you have no idea how much you still mean to me. It’s not something that I can just turn off.

[ Banging on door ]

Nick: Adam, you in there?

[ Both sighing ]

Kyle: Call me a genius again.

Audra: Um, then there wouldn’t be enough room in this bed for me, you and your ego.

[ Kyle laughing ]

Kyle: I think we can make it all fit.

Audra: Mm-hmm. You know, your plan was pretty clever. You know, going to victor and exposing adam’s blackmail was a stroke of genius.

Kyle: Oh, I wish I could have seen victor’s face and adam’s when he got an earful from his daddy.

[ Kyle laughing ]

Audra: I can only imagine.

Victoria: Oh, I’m so glad this wasn’t a bad time for you.

Nikki: Oh, darling, it’s so good to see you.

Victoria: Because I wanted to come by and say welcome home, daddy. I assume that your trip was very productive.

Victor: It was very nice. Being home, not so much.

Victoria: What’s wrong?

Victor: Your brother crossed a line again.

Victoria: Oh, well, I assume that you don’t mean nicholas. So, what has adam done now?

Nikki: Do we really have to talk about this? I have almost gotten your father calmed down.

Victor: Baby, come here. I know, but she needs to know. So happens that adam found some incriminating emails on the mccall server about audra charles. Used that evidence to blackmail her.

Victoria: I don’t suppose this has anything to do with her recent pitch to merge newman media with adam’s company.

Victor: That doesn’t surprise you?

Victoria: It’s not too difficult to connect the dots. Adam is a spoiled brat who wants his toy back. He’s convinced that we robbed him of newman media, even though he’s the one who walked away from it.

Victor: Anyway, it has been handled. The evidence will never see the light of day.

Nikki: Yes, audra had the good sense to come clean. She came by tonight to see your father.

Victoria: See. Well, what about adam? I hope that you gave him the smackdown that he deserves.

Victor: He’s been put in his place.

Victoria: And this is the final straw, right, daddy? He’s gone too far. His actions are tearing this family apart and it has to stop.

Victor: Your brother nicholas was just here. He agrees with you. I think we have all reached our limits with adam’s behavior.

Nikki: Well, it’s about time that he faces consequences for his actions. I mean, he has been nothing but a troublemaker for our family, for the company. It cannot continue.

Victoria: No, it cannot.

Victor: Yeah.

Nick: Are you out of your mind? Dad just told me what you and audra were up to with newman media. What were you thinking? Sally? You didn’t live this strong,

Nick: What are you doing here?

Sally: I just came to see adam. I thought you weren’t coming back ’til tomorrow morning.

Nick: Yeah, I changed my plans. Came home a day early. I went by the club, but you weren’t in your room. Then, I went and saw dad and he filled me in on what adam is up to now.

Adam: Nick, I’m not in the mood, okay? Can we just do this tomorrow when you’ve calmed down?

Nick: I’m not going to calm down. Man, what are you doing? Everything was going great. I’m not going to let you screw this up for sharon.

Adam: Nobody is screwing anything up for anybody, okay? It’s been handled.

Sally: Okay, what is going on?

Adam: Nothing, it’s nothing worth talking about.

Nick: Nothing?

Sally: Okay, would someone please just tell me?

Nick: Adam somehow got his hands on some damaging information about audra and tucker during the time when audra was working at mccall unlimited. He then used that information to blackmail her into convincing dad and victoria that we needed to merge newman media with our new company.

Sally: Adam, is this true?

Adam: Blackmail is an exaggeration. I presented an opportunity and I made a– I made a valid case.

Nick: You crossed a line.

Adam: If it would have worked, it would have been a coup. It was strictly business. Don’t you think our father hasn’t done the same thing?

Nick: What you did was reckless and everybody is telling you, dad included, that you need to back off. This is not the right way to handle things.

Adam: Nick, you have your methods and I have mine.

Nick: You think you know how this is going to play out? You have no idea.

[ Adam chuckling softly ]

Kyle: Adam had the right idea about merging the two companies. Makes sense for us to join forces and create a stronger, more successful entity.

Audra: Yeah, but without adam, of course.

Kyle: Exactly. We don’t need his reckless behavior and megalomania ruining our plans. But there has to be a way to do this without him.

Audra: I admire your confidence, but no. Nikki, victor and victoria are all against it. So, I’m happy to sit this one out. You know, I think victor might actually sort of like me.

Kyle: Hm.

Audra: All thanks to your brilliant plan.

Kyle: Of course, someday you’ll need to get nikki and victoria on your side.

[ Audra grunting ]

Audra: I’m not sure that’s possible.

Kyle: You’ll figure something out. It’s all in the method.

Audra: I like your method.

Kyle: Hm.

Audra: Show me again.

Kyle: Oh. If you insist.

Victor: Just so you know, I’ve given adam one last chance. You know, I think he got the message.

Victoria: Another chance? Really? Mom.

Nikki: Your father knows how I feel about it.

Victoria: Dad, he is going to continue to defy you. The only thing that’s going to end that is if you stop him in his tracks.

Victor: Let me explain this to you. He’s got to stay where he is right now. I’ve just secured a lot of funds for adustus in europe. Not going to risk losing that because we have a squabble now.

Victoria: Adustus has two other people at the helm. They don’t need adam. He can easily be replaced.

Nikki: Darling, I understand your concerns, but right now, we need to think strategically.

Victoria: Mom, you can’t possibly be defending adam.

Nikki: Absolutely not. I am looking out for the company. And I’m sure it’s not lost on you that nate approached me with this merger at audra’s urging.

Victoria: I am aware, but he believed that there was a very strong financial upside. And if adam hadn’t been involved in this merger, of course I would have considered it. But he was, so it’s a moot point.

Nikki: Okay, you have glossed over the fact that nate can be manipulated into influencing a decision. You should be more concerned about him and the risk he brings to the company.

Victoria: He was trying to defend a colleague and he backed off immediately when I told him that it wasn’t happening.

Nikki: Victoria, can you really trust him?

Victoria: Yes, I believe that he will do what’s best for newman enterprises. I do. He simply was advocating for this merger because he wanted the recognition and he wanted to protect the company’s reputation. How can we fault him for trying to make a smart move?

Victor: He should have come to me. Right away. As audra did. You know how important loyalty is to me?

Victoria: God, please. Audra only came to you because she was out of options. And let’s not forget how adam was able to blackmail her in the first place.

Victor: Let’s put that aside, all right? It has been laid to rest.

Victoria: So, now you trust audra and you don’t trust nate?

Nikki: Frankly, I don’t know if I can trust either one of them.

Victoria: Nate was not involved in the mccall coverup. Audra was. She obviously was tucker’s fixer. And let’s not forget what she tried to do to devon’s company on his behalf. What else do you think she’s capable of? Rsv is in for a surprise.

Victor: So, you are suggesting we replace audra?

Victoria: I don’t think that’s the worst possible idea.

Victor: But you seem rather passionate about it.

Nikki: And yet, you’re still protective of nate, in spite of what he tried to do to devon and lily.

Victoria: Well, he was upfront with me about the audra situation at the very least.

Nikki: Only after he made a direct pitch to me to go along with adam’s idea.

Victoria: Yes, that’s true. But as I said before, he was just trying to score his own business success. He wasn’t trying to cover his ass or bow to any blackmail. Look, his only crimes are friendship and ambition. Audra seems a lot more comfortable with betrayal and duplicity, almost in fact as comfortable as adam is. So get rid of adam and fire audra, is that it?

Audra: Victoria is clearly victoria’s golden child. So if she wants you by her side, there’s nowhere else you should be.

Nate: I plan to continue to make myself indispensable to her.

Audra: Just don’t get complacent. You know, this is just the beginning. And the next step is clear. You must solidify your relationship with victoria. Take things to the next level.

[ Nate sighing ]

Tucker: Nate.

Nate: Tucker. Hello. I heard rumors about a wedding. Congratulations.

Tucker: Thank you very much.

Nate: Ashley is quite a woman.

[ Tucker chuckling ]

Tucker: Yes, she is. And I’m the luckiest of men. Hey, how are you? Scotch. Neat, please.

Nate: So, what brings you here alone on your wedding night? No honeymoon?

Tucker: In time. Yeah. But there’s just too much to do here in town, you know? Personally and professionally.

Nate: You must be eager to get back to the business world after selling mccall.

[ Knocking on door ]

Tucker: Uh, yeah. Now with ashley as my partner, we can’t lose.

Nate: I suppose you had a chance to talk to audra then. Seems like you both managed to dodge a career-killing bullet.

Audra: So, you think that I can win over nikki as well?

Kyle: You’ve got a secret weapon. I mean, she’s always liked me.

Audra: Oh, yeah? More than her own granddaughter? But, you know, if you’re right, we’d have both victor and nikki supporting us, and with victoria distracted by nate, the sky’s the limit for us at newman media.

Kyle: Mm-hmm. See how easy that was?

Audra: Look, imagine the control we could have over a massive media empire. You know, the power it could give us politically, financially, globally. And media holds the key to shaping the world and influencing the masses. Yeah.

Kyle: You do not think small, do you?

Audra: Winners never do.

Kyle: Hm.

Adam: Look, I’m sorry, nick, but I’m not interested in more of your righteous indignation. You can afford to act that way, but sometimes, some of us have to do the dirty work.

Nick: Or not.

Adam: Tell that to our father. Merging this company is a good idea. You know it, sharon knows it, our father even knows it. He’s just being difficult to put me in my place. And victoria, she won’t go along with it because she’s threatened by me.

Nick: No, adam, no. She hates you. It’s a big difference.

Sally: Adam, what exactly did you do with audra?

Adam: It’s not relevant.

Sally: Please, tell me anyway.

Adam: Audra and i had an agreement. I found some incriminating information in some of the old mccall files and I agreed to destroy it as a favor to her.

Sally: In exchange for what?

Adam: I asked her to use her influence to talk to victor and victoria, so they would take my idea into serious consideration because we all know that victor values other people’s opinions over his own son.

Nick: That is a hell of a way to spin that.

Adam: Look, nick, will you just back off?

Nick: What he’s leaving out is that audra felt trapped, so she went to my father, confessed everything. Does that sound like two people exchanging favors?

Sally: No. No, it does not.

Adam: Okay, well, I had to try. Newman media used to be mine.

Sally: Yes, but it is not anymore. So, why would you think blackmail was the way to get it back?

Adam: I don’t owe anyone an explanation for my actions. It was a calculated business move. It was one just like our father has made over the years to accomplish his goals. Was it sketchy? Perhaps. Was it ruthless? Maybe. But the ends justify the means.

Sally: No, adam. They do not. You know what, I– I cannot be here anymore. I will meet you back at the club.

Nick: What’s up? What’s going on here, anyway?

Sally: I will explain it all to you later. Goodbye, adam.

[ Door slamming ]

Tucker: Actually surprised you two are so close.

Nate: We share many of the same interests.

Tucker: Do you share a lot of interests with victoria?

Nate: Victoria’s a wonderful colleague. I couldn’t be more honored to work with her.

Tucker: Nice. Oh. Word of advice regarding audra. That woman is a self-centered and vicious person. She will take control of whatever she needs to to get what she wants, and she’s very good at it. And you won’t see it coming.

Kyle: You love it, don’t you? The game.

Audra: Well, what’s the point of life if you’re not having fun? You know, in business, pleasure, life. It’s not just about the power or money.

Kyle: Hm.

Audra: Yeah, it’s about the rush.

Kyle: Oh. You know, I found that a healthy dose of pragmatism goes well with a powerful ambition.

Audra: Hm. Well, I’m always pragmatic. You know, I trained under tucker. Look, I just want to enjoy myself, you know, in the process. And you strike me as someone who hasn’t had enough fun lately.

Kyle: Ooh, I mean, it has been a while.

[ Both chuckling ]

Audra: That’s why we’re good for each other, you know?

Kyle: Hm. I guess I’ll have to stick around, see how it all plays out.

Audra: Yeah. You know, I think that we’re reaching the point where, uh, spending the night together sounds quite appealing.

Kyle: Appealing?

[ Knocking on door ]

Tucker: Audra, it’s tucker.

Audra: Oh.

Victoria: Maybe audra did what was necessary. And maybe we can trust her. But adam, dad, the more you keep rewarding him, the more he’s gonna believe that he’s completely untouchable.

Victor: Don’t you worry about him, okay? He got the message. He’ll fall in line. He’s focused now.

Victoria: How long is that gonna last? I mean, come on. He’s driven by his ego. He’s constantly trying to prove that he’s more superior to me, to nicholas, even to you.

Nikki: Believe me, I know how you feel. But right now, we need to keep adam in place due to the capital your father just secured.

Victoria: Then, let’s just find some other capital.

Victor: Not going to happen.

Victoria: I will say this now and then I’ll be done, but it is past time that we cut adam off at the knees. He needs to stop manipulating and undermining our family. We’ve given him enough chances, and he’s shown that he’s only out for himself. And I just hope by the time you figure this out, daddy, I hope it’s not too late.

Adam: Well, this is exactly what I expected, nick. We just see the world through different lenses.

Nick: No, there is a right way and a wrong way.

Adam: Yeah. And you are always right. We know.

Nick: Adam, it’s not that simple. Dad is furious. He is fed up with you and about to cut you loose. You are jeopardizing your entire future.

Adam: Would you stop pretending like you actually care? And it’s dad’s prerogative. If he wants to fire me, he can do that.

Nick: When are you gonna grow up?

Adam: Just call me what you want, okay? But I’m not gonna compromise who I am. I’ll do things the way I want. If you think that that’s childish, I really– I don’t care.

Nick: You know, this. I– it’s another example. Look at me. She is not with you anymore. She is with me. You need to respect that.

Adam: Nick, sally ordered the food. See, she set the table. She unpacked boxes for me. You see, she thinks that she loves you, and I’m part of her past because I hurt her, but the memories of that hurt are not going to last forever. And soon she’s going to remember what it’s like to be with somebody who loves her more than you ever will. Feeling sluggish or weighed down?

Nick: Now, you are delusional and selfish. Sally doesn’t want your love anymore. She doesn’t want your vision for the future. You need to move on. She has made her choice.

Adam: Yeah, you. But you’ll never put her first, and you damn well know it, nick.

Nick: You just keep bringing up that night with cameron. Sally seems to understand, but you just can’t do it, can you?

Adam: You know, let me make something clear. I don’t owe you anything. I respect sally’s feelings, but yours, they do not concern me. I’m fine to work with you. It’s what sharon wants, it’s what victor wants. And it’s important assets that sharon brings in the financial backing that victor has, but personally, I don’t care what you think or how you feel.

Nick: This is the life you are choosing. Think about it. You’re just so focused on everything that you think was stolen from you, newman media and sally’s love, but you can’t think beyond your own rage and loss. You have nothing and no one and you can’t blame anyone but yourself for that.

Adam: Get out, nick. Sally is waiting for you, so don’t disappoint her.

Nick: Oh, I won’T. Count on it. You’re crazy if you think I’m going to let this slide.

[ Adam sighing ]

Tucker: Hey. Uh-oh.

Audra: Hm?

Tucker: What you got going? Some kyle abbott action, huh?

[ Tucker laughing ]

Kyle: Uncle tucker.

Tucker: You guys hard at work? So impressive.

Audra: You know, I didn’t expect to see you here. Shouldn’t you be all curled up with your new bride? Aw. Did the wedding get called off last minute?

Tucker: No, we went ahead with it. Went very well, now I’m a happily married man and my new bride is sleeping peacefully in our suite. It was a lovely ceremony. Isn’t that right, kyle?

Kyle: Uh, what I saw didn’t seem very festive or romantic.

Tucker: Well, you got there a little late, didn’t you? Hey, I wonder if you wouldn’t mind getting lost for a little bit. I’d like some alone time with audra and myself.

Audra: If this is about the mccall issue, kyle is up to speed. Besides, the threat has been neutralized, so, uh, this is over.

Tucker: You’ll forgive me if I’m going to need a little more than just your say so.

Kyle: It should be enough.

Tucker: Who the hell’s talking to you?

Audra: If I’m not worried about it, tucker, you shouldn’t be either, okay? You can go check in with adam if you want. But as far as we’re concerned, this is over.

Nate: Hey, victoria. I was just about to head out. How did things go with your parents?

Victoria: It was quite eye-opening. It turns out that audra did seek out my father’s help in regards to adam and it’s all been resolved.

Nate: That’s good to hear.

Victoria: You know, I had the most interesting conversation with my mother.

[ Phone ringing ] I need to get that. It’s probably the kids wondering where the dessert is at.

[ Nate laughing ]

Nate: Kids always have a way of reminding us of our priorities, don’t they? Is everything okay? You seem a bit troubled.

Victoria: I am. Your involvement with audra caught me off guard. Why didn’t you come to me first?

Nate: Yeah, you’re right, uh, I apologize, victoria. I should have been more transparent with you from the start.

Victoria: You know, if you and I are going to have a strong relationship, both professionally and personally, we’re going to have to be open with one another.

Nate: Yes.

Victoria: No matter how difficult the situation might be.

Nate: I absolutely agree. Look, I don’t ever want to hurt you or make you feel like you can’t trust me.

Victoria: I appreciate that.

Nate: From now on, no more secrets.

Nate: I know there are still doubts about me. Your mother certainly seems to have them. I wanna prove myself every single day. Not just for the job. I want to be by your side in every aspect. This is the most at home I felt since my days as a young surgeon.

Victoria: You know, you’ve already proven yourself to me in so many ways. I believe in your potential. It’s not just about the job for me either. I think it’s about the connection that we have and I want us to continue to grow together.

Nate: I hate to think that helping audra without consulting you first would somehow jeopardize us. But I need you to understand I did it because I believed it was the right thing to do. To keep the mccall scandal quiet.

Victoria: I know. We all make mistakes.

Nate: Mm. And I learned from mine. I would do anything for you.

Victoria: Anything?

Nate: Anything and everything.

Nikki: I have to agree with victoria. You have given adam countless chances and he continues to disappoint you. But at some point–

Victor: Sweetheart, you’ve got to trust me. I know when it’s time for it all to be over.

Nikki: I know. But it’s very hard for me to stand by and watch him hurt you like this.

Victor: Yeah, I know. I’ve always given adam many opportunities to change and redeem himself. More opportunities than I have given to my other children. That’s because of his past, you know? He was a damaged boy. Anyway… maybe, it’s time to hold him accountable.

Nikki: But darling, he never learns. How much longer are we going to let him create havoc in our family and keep disappointing you? I mean, we have faced so many challenges together. And we learned long ago that we are much stronger if we stand united.

Victor: Yeah. We have learned that much, sweetheart.

[ Victor sighing ] Maybe, it’s time to reassess my relationship with adam.

Nick: I’m sorry our reunion was overshadowed by adam. I definitely didn’t want you to see me go off on adam like that.

Sally: Yeah, I won’t lie, it wasn’t pretty.

Nick: Well, I– I wanted to surprise you. That’s why I didn’t call you when I got back from my trip.

Sally: Instead, I surprised you. I really should explain why I was with adam and what happened because I– I don’t want there to be any misunderstandings between us.

Nick: It’s okay. I’m– I’m sure adam tricked you into seeing him.

Sally: Um, it wasn’t quite what you think. There has been a gradual change in my relationship with adam. Obviously, and especially, after the loss of ava. I have gotten to a point where I can forgive him and I can recognize that he’s dealing with his own pain. So, I brought him a housewarming gift as a gesture of goodwill and to show him that I– I really am trying to make an effort to move forward.

Nick: Well, I’m happy for you, uh, but you wanting to reach out to adam rarely goes the way you want it to.

Sally: Yeah, and this time was no different. Right before I got there, he got a call from victor saying that he needed to go to the ranch, so he asked me to stay and ordered dinner. He said that, I don’t know, there was something important that he wanted to talk to me about, but when he got back, he was really upset.

Nick: What did he want to talk about?

Sally: I don’t know. You showed up and everything got really complicated.

Nick: Sorry, I didn’t want it to be like that. I really didn’T. So, can we just, like, start over? Can we just forget about adam and I can come home from my trip all over again? And we can make up for lost time.

Sally: Welcome home.

Kyle: Yeah.

Audra: Cheers.

[ Indistinct chattering ]

Adam: Hey, let me guess. You’re celebrating because you managed to weasel your way out of a very compromising position.

Audra: Look, you and i have nothing left to say to each other, adam, so.

Adam: You know, I can’t decide if you are a genius or you’re just a total coward.

Audra: Hm. You know what your mistake was? Underestimating me, which is always a bad idea.

Kyle: Mm, it’s always a bad idea.

Adam: I really love your confidence, but how do you know I’m not going to release that damning information anyway?

Kyle: I don’t think you’d wanna piss victor off like that. Or me.

Adam: Kyle, audra may be impressed, but I’m not. Is that the best that you got? Lean cuisine.

Nate: I know a simple apology may not be enough to make things right, but I hope you can forgive me.

Victoria: You are saying all the right things.

Nate: But you still need convincing. Perhaps, we could discuss this further in private upstairs.

Victoria: As enticing as that sounds, johnny and katie are waiting for me.

Nate: Right. Right. Their desserts.

Victoria: And also, it’s getting close to bedtime for katie anyway. I should probably, just get going home, but we’ll talk tomorrow.

Nate: Sure. Tomorrow. Good night.

Adam: My father and I, we reached an understanding.

Audra: Oh, I’m sure you did.

Adam: Yeah, let me make something clear to you, audra, and to your little puppy dog. I will regain control of newman media one way or another.

Audra: Will you now?

Adam: It should have been mine all along, and it will be again.

Audra: Even if you have to burn the world down to do it.

Adam: Whatever it takes. You know what, I think I’m going to get a drink somewhere else.

Kyle: Yeah, it’s probably a good idea.

[ Adam chuckling ]

Victor: So audra, your push to convince us to merge newman media with adam’s company was at his request?

Audra: Yes, to do whatever it takes to convince you to approve it.

Nikki: What’s his leverage?

Audra: He managed to get his hands on some evidence of a cover-up I perpetuated for tucker while I was at mccall. Either I do what adam says to make this merger happen or he exposes what he’s got. It could destroy me.

Nikki: And there it is. Now that you are finally laying all of your cards out on the table, why don’t you tell us where nate fits into all of this?

Victoria: Have you talked to audra recently?

Nate: Uh, not in the last few hours. Why?

Victoria: Hm. It seems that she met with my mom and she pitched the same idea that you had.

Nate: Oh, uh, which idea is that?

Victoria: Oh, to merge adam’s company with newman media. How about that for a coincidental?

Nate: Huh. How about that?

Victoria: Nate, please. You can’t possibly think that I would be so naive.

Nate: I’m not sure what you’re trying to imply.

Victoria: I’m not trying to imply anything, I’m saying it. Audra is savvy enough to know that this merger would probably not be in her best interest and would most likely lead to her demotion and you and I both know that she is not going to be so willing to give up her top spot at newman media that easily. Look, you and I know each other too well for this. Just tell me what you and audra are up to.

[ Phone ringing ]

Adam: Hey, pop. Welcome back. Was your trip productive?

Victor: We’ll discuss it when I see you at the ranch. Now.

Sally: Oh. Happy housewarming. It’s better late than never. Or is this a bad time?

Ashley: So, let’s hear it. What’s this really about?

Jack: It’s called a wedding gift.

Ashley: No strings attached?

Jack: I’m giving you everything you wanted. All of the assets from the company you built in paris, a buyout of your interest in jabot. Everything except the original patents and those that you developed on your own are yours to keep.

Ashley: So then, I would just separate from the company and that’s it.

Jack: Which is precisely what you said you wanted when you first broached the idea of starting a new company with tucker. Has that changed? And if so, why? You love rich, delicious ice cream.

Jack: I’m not sure what you mean by that.

Ashley: I always wanted my company back. As you recall a few weeks ago, you offered it to me along with my patents and then you changed your mind. You did a 180 and you rescinded your offer. So, is that what you’re doing right now, jack? You’re doing a little bait and switch on the worst possible day, my wedding day?

Jack: What this is, what this is supposed to be is a generous gesture on my part and hopefully, a genuine effort to end the war between us.

Tucker: All right, jack, on behalf of ashley and myself, I would like to thank you for that–

Ashley: Wait a second. What are you doing?

Tucker: I’m taking this deal before he snatches it away so we can get back to celebrating our wedding. I don’t know if you recall, we stood right there a few minutes ago and exchanged vows. And the sooner we get this jabot crap over with, the sooner we can spend our first night together as husband and wife or our second, first night, whatever.

[ Kyle sighing ]

Diane: Kyle?

Kyle: Night, mom. I’m out of here.

Diane: You just got here. You’re half an hour late and you’re leaving already.

Kyle: You know, to be honest, I’m sorry I even came. I hate that I interrupted a wonderful night with audra to step into this mess. Enjoy the reception.

Diane: Please. Please stay. This is family.

Kyle: Yeah. Where’s norman rockwell when you need him, mom?

Diane: Look, I know what you’re doing. You’re in a lot of pain and you’re trying to drown it with an affair that will end up being meaningless. I mean, trust me, you’re going to regret this.

Kyle: You know what, mom? Not tonight.

Nate: I did have a brief conversation with audra about this possible merger. I was pointing out what a powerhouse we could build by combining two companies that would be redundant on their own. I don’t know, I guess she caught on to my excitement about it and thought if she made a successful pitch to nikki, she’d end up with a higher position in the bigger company. I’m telling you, victoria, this merger makes too much sense not to happen.

Victoria: I’m sorry, but we both know that audra is a lot smarter than that. There’s no way that she would have a chance of winning in that situation. Especially not with adam and nick and sharon involved. And why would she push so hard for something that would jeopardize the executive position that she’s already in?

Nate: I can’t answer that.

Victoria: I think you can. I think there’s something you’re not telling me. Now, I’d like to think that you and I would never play games with one another. I really hope that I’m not wrong.

Sally: Wow. Very nice.

Adam: Thank you.

Sally: Yeah, down to earth suits you. I meant that as a compliment. Really, I– I– I like it. Good for you.

Adam: Well, thanks. I am liking it too. Have you heard from nick?

Sally: Yeah. Uh, he is finally flying back first thing in the morning.

Adam: Mm, finally is right. I’m sure you two are looking forward to seeing each other again. Look, I would uh, love to stick around and uh, offer you a drink, but I was just heading out to the ranch. I’ve been summoned by his majesty.

Sally: Oh, he’s back from europe?

Adam: Mm-hmm.

Sally: Okay. Well, perfect, I will join you.

Adam: Why on earth would you do that?

Sally: So I can tell him face to face that I am accepting his offer to head up his new design company.

Adam: Uh, I would probably wait on that. I could tell from his tone that he’s intending to rip into me about something.

Sally: Well, even better. I’ll give him the good news and I’ll soften him up for you.

Adam: I appreciate that, I do. But I think it’s better if I face him alone and he gets whatever this is out of his system. Also, I don’t want to steal your thunder. So, uh, why don’t you just stay here? Make yourself a drink. Why don’t you order some dinner?

Sally: Are you sure?

Adam: This isn’t a ploy, I promise. Besides, I’m sure you’re getting sick of the G.C.A.C. Room service menu.

Sally: Well, yeah, I can’t argue with that.

Adam: Well, good. Then, it’s settled. Why don’t you make yourself at home, get comfortable? It shouldn’t take too long. And actually, there is something that I would like to talk to you about when I get back.

Audra: Please don’t blame nate for this. I told him that adam has me backed into a corner. There was absolutely no intent on his part to be malicious or– or manipulative. He was just trying to protect me and help me get out of my bad situation. That’s why he claimed that the merger idea was his. I honestly thought that I could work this out on my own, but I just managed to dig myself in deeper by trying. I should’ve come to you immediately and alerted you to what was going on. And I apologize. You have no idea how much I value newman media and my position there. And I’ll certainly never take for granted the opportunity that the two of you and victoria and nate have given me. Which is why I finally come to you for advice. Ughh!

Nate: You’re right. I owe you the truth.

Victoria: Yes, you do.

Nate: Your brother is blackmailing audra over something she did to help keep tucker out of trouble. Adam’s price, make the merger happen with newman media.

Victoria: Oh, of course.

Nate: I agreed to help audra to protect newman and most importantly, you from adam’s threat that if he didn’t get what he wanted–

Victoria: His precious newman media.

Nate: Yes, he’d go public with the scandal. Which would reflect badly on newman media, compliments of its current C.E.O., Audra charles.

Victoria: Unbelievable.

Nate: I was sure you’d only approve of it if it made sense for newman enterprises. But you made it clear that you didn’t feel it was the right move to make, so I dropped the issue.

Victoria: Well, I can’t say that any of this surprises me. It’s classic adam. So, just how serious is the situation?

Victor: Audra, let me clarify how this works. You tell us everything, then I will decide whether we help you.

Audra: That seems fair.

Victor: All right, let’s hear it.

Audra: There was a very popular singer that was signed to one of tucker’s, uh, labels. And while on tour he, um, he entertained himself by– by sleeping with underage girls.

Nikki: Oh, dear god.

Audra: The mccall pr department found out, but the tour was making so much money that they decided to sit on the evidence, uh, until it ended. And then, the tour was over and the singer was arrested. Tucker was off on one of his sabbaticals, so he had no idea what was going on until after the fact. And then he immediately fired the people in pr who participated in the cover-up.

Nikki: Good. So, what’s the problem?

Audra: Well, the problem is, then tucker put me in charge of erasing every single trace of the cover-up. He wanted to make it seem as if it never happened.

Victor: And you cooperated?

Audra: I was following my boss’s orders. But yes, I cooperated.

Nikki: So, how did adam find out about this?

Audra: Well, I kept tucker um, up to date through an anonymous email account I created, which unfortunately went to his spam folder, so he never saw the messages.

Victor: So, when adam took over mccall, he found those email exchanges, right?

Nikki: And realized he could use them to his advantage.

Audra: If I facilitate the merger, adam keeps his mouth shut. And if I don’t–

Nikki: Then, he exposes you. We get that.

Audra: I didn’t know what to do, so I confessed the whole thing to nate because I knew that I could trust him. And then he offered to help, uh, convince victoria to go through with the merger, but only because he really believes that the move would benefit newman enterprises.

Nikki: And then, you pitched the idea to me.

Audra: Yeah. I was certain you were the one person on earth who could convince your husband. It was deceitful of me. And I am so sorry, mrs. Newman. I, um, I was frightened, I felt trapped and I didn’t think things through. But I promise you, if you let me survive this nightmare at newman, nothing like this will ever, ever happen again.

Victor: No, it won’T.

Adam: Sorry, I’m a little late. I got… held up.

Victor: Did you really think you were gonna get away with this?

Jack: Ashley, please hear me out. It was my understanding that we reached a detente with abby earlier and diane and I have made the effort to come to your wedding, even though we don’t believe in it.

Ashley: That’s not helping, jack.

Jack: But I have given you the freedom you wanted from jabot, along with all of the stuff you brought from paris the last time you left us. So, I ask you and I really want to know, what more can I do? What more do you want?

Ashley: You’re right. I haven’t handled that well and I apologize to you, I apologize to everybody. I’m sorry. I appreciate the wedding gift. Thank you very much. And I’m also grateful that the two of you came today. I know that wasn’t easy. I appreciate it.

Diane: Oh, well, thank you. We appreciate the invite and um, ashley, congratulations on your new life and your new business.

Ashley: Thank you.

Diane: Jack and I are both so relieved that you won’t have to worry about jabot anymore. Trust me, your father’s company will be in good hands.

[ Billy chuckling ]

Billy: You’re kidding, right? I mean, you gotta be kidding. Ashley, as your brother, trust me, take the offer because with diane involved, the family, the company, all of it, it’s gonna go to hell.

Jack: What is it with you? You can’t go five minutes without making some snide comment to piss me off. What is it? Insecurity? Jealousy? Just bad habits?

Billy: Do I have to pick one, jack? You know what? Why don’t you stop gaslighting our sister, you sanctimonious ass–

Tucker: I’m sorry. Would you please shut up? This is supposed to be our evening. Ashley’s and mine, not yours. And I’ll be damned if anything is going to let you ruin it. If this isn’t where you wanna spend your evening, take it somewhere else. Or you know what? Let’s you and I take it somewhere else. My apologies.

Traci: And as I recall, the two of you promised a truce tonight. I was standing right there when you promised it and I am embarrassed to say I fell for it. So, if you could just put this all aside and we could enjoy this lovely party.

Jack: I think maybe it’s time for us to leave. I sincerely hope you can enjoy and trust this wedding gift.

Abby: Uncle jack, uncle jack. Please, you really don’t have to go.

Jack: I do have to go and I apologize. I had no idea my wedding gift would backfire quite so spectacularly.

Diane: Good night.

[ Abby sighing ]

Devon: Yeah.

Ashley: So, do we know how to throw a party or what?

Tucker: Wedding of the century.

Ashley: Yeah. Billy, I’m sorry. Uh, what jack said, did it hurt you?

Billy: No, it’s okay. There’s no need to apologize. I’ve got thick skin. I’m an abbott, okay? So, mr. And mrs., Congratulations. I wish you nothing but the best.

Tucker: Thanks.

Ashley: Yeah, bye.

Billy: Shall we?

Tucker: Bye.

Ashley: Okay. Well, no problem. More champagne for us, right?

Tucker: I’ll drink to that. See what I did there?

Ashley: That’s good. So, anybody want some cake?

Tucker: I want some cake.

Ashley: Okay, let’s get cake. Yeah.

Abby: Well, that’s not exactly how I pictured this evening going.

Devon: Well, considering the, uh, the guest list, we probably should have.

Adam: Relax, I’m not gonna insult your intelligence by pretending that I don’t know what this is about.

Victor: Good.

Adam: I assume that you filled them in on, um…

Audra: Everything.

Nikki: And she does mean everything, adam.

Adam: Well, I’m sorry to disappoint the three of you, but I won’t deny any bit of it. I saw an opportunity and I took advantage of it to try to get something that I wanted. Call it genetic. Have to say, I’m a little disappointed in you though. I didn’t think that you were a coward.

Audra: What other choice did you leave me? You had to know I’d look for an escape route the minute you tried to blackmail me. You know, you demanded that I go along with a plan that would probably cost me my job if I pulled it off. So, of course, I looked for an alternate solution.

Adam: Well, you never know what I might have offered you, so now you will never know–

Victor: Enough! You shut up and listen now.

Victor: Ms. Charles, I want you to know that I appreciate the fact that you came forward and told me and nikki everything you know. And I admire the fact that you managed to get out from under our son’s grip.

Audra: I just hope that my hesitation doesn’t jeopardize my position at newman media.

Victor: No, it won’T.

Audra: You have no idea how much that means to me, mr. Newman.

Victor: Now, if you don’t mind, I’d like a few moments alone with my son.

Audra: Of course. Thank you both so much for your time and understanding.

[ Kyle sighing ]

Victor: Son, how dare you go behind my back like this, I mean blackmail. Come on, boy.

Adam: You made your fortune by doing the same kind of thing, probably more times than you can count.

Victor: But I’m not talking about me. I’m talking about you and your constant defiance.

Adam: Come on, dad, don’t take it so personally.

Victor: It is very personal to me, son. I’ve given you one opportunity after the other. One lucrative opportunity after the other, including this last one.

Adam: This last one?

Victor: Yeah.

Adam: Well, then you hired nicholas to watch over me and make sure that I play well with others.

Victor: But you need someone to look over you.

Adam: I don’T.

Victor: This was a case in point.

Adam: I don’T.

Victor: Is your hostility towards me so deep that you don’t mind being duplicitous with your own family, with your own father?

Nikki: And let me tell you something. I have begged your father to stop hoping for you to change because I don’t believe you can and you just keep proving me right.

Victor: Listen to me carefully now. This mccall disaster cannot go public. So whatever evidence you’re holding over audra charles, you’ve got to eliminate it.

Adam: Anything else?

Victor: Yes, son. I don’t know how much longer I can do this. Your constant defiance is getting on my nerves. I can’t do it anymore.

Adam: Well then, don’T.

Victor: Listen to me. I should fire your ass because of this, but I won’T. I can’t because I just acquired a lot of capital from europe to finance your company! I’m not gonna lose those damn investors because of you! You’re hanging by a thread.

Nate: Victoria, please don’t be too hard on audra when you talk to her. I’m sure she was just scared for you to find out what she did for tucker in the past.

Victoria: You know, I have to admit, I’m a little conflicted by all of this. On one hand, I admire her willingness to protect her employer, but on the other hand, covering up a heinous crime committed by one of the company’s singers–

Nate: No, no, she didn’t cover up the crime. She covered up the actions of the pr department. It was after the fact and he’d already been arrested. Yes, the actions of the pr team were heinous. If word got out, it would have tanked mccall unlimited.

Victoria: So, what audra did was done solely to keep mccall safe moving forward.

Nate: Exactly. And frankly, I– I– I think she should get a pass for that. The real problem, as I see it is adam’s relentless determination to take back newman media.

Victoria: You know, I’m not forgetting that you and I discussed sabotaging mccall unlimited to keep adam from doing any damage to newman enterprises. But of course, that was before my father brought it under the newman umbrella.

Nate: The problem isn’t the company, it isn’t audra. It’s adam and you’ve known that all along. I think it’s time to finally push your brother off the cliff. (Geri) I smoked and I have copd.

Nikki: Victor, how much longer are you going to put up with adam’s outrageous, disrespectful behavior?

Victor: You saw his face when he left. I think I got through to him.

Nikki: There’s no such thing when it comes to adam.

Victor: Time will tell.

Nikki: Yes, it will. And that’s what I’m worried about. Darling, it just… it breaks my heart when I see you so angry because I know how much hurt is lying right beneath it. And I know how much you want to hear him say, “thanks, dad.” But you’re never going to hear it. Not because you don’t deserve it, but because when it comes to adam, enough is never enough.

Adam: You stayed.

Sally: You asked me to.

Victoria: Well.

Audra: Hi.

Jack: To us, for surviving an evening we were both dreading.

Diane: Ugh. No kidding.

Jack: I hated watching ashley marry that jackass, but I’m still shocked at her reluctance to accept my very generous gift.

Traci: That’s what shocked you, jack? Really? Our sister had every reason to behave the way she did. – Look mom! – Wow!

Nate: Victoria could tell I was holding something back from her, so I filled her in on what’s going on. I’m done keeping secrets.

Audra: Good. I’m glad. I just came clean with victor and nikki, so it’s all out in the open. I know firsthand what a relief that is. Oh, and I’m sure you want to meet with me in the morning to assess what this threat means for newman media. Look, I can promise you right now that that threat has been neutralized and so has adam. He no longer has any power over me, thanks to your father.

Sally: Let me guess, things did not go well with your father. What happened?

[ Adam sighing ]

Adam: It’s not worth talking about. Wow, you unpacked some of my boxes. Thank you. You didn’t need to do that.

Sally: Well, I didn’t just do it for you, I did it for me ’cause I got bored. But I’m really glad I did because in the process I came across these. I can’t believe you held on to these. Why did you do that?

Adam: I wanted to remind myself that once, whether I deserved it or not, I was happy. And I didn’t want to forget what that felt like.

[ Knock on door ]

Kyle: Hey, hey.

Audra: Hey, hey.

Kyle: So, how did it go?

[ Audra sighing ]

Audra: You, mr. Abbott, are a genius.

Kyle: Oh, yes. But let’s not talk it to death.

Billy: Hey, I’m sorry about everything, okay? The way everything turned out tonight. That was a little intense and uh, I really wish you weren’t exposed to that full-on abbott family meltdown.

Chelsea: That’s not actually what upset me the most. I know that performance of yours was for the sake of this trojan horse scheme thing you got going on with jack and diane, but I haven’t seen you like that in years. Not since johnny was born. And frankly, it made me shudder.

Billy: Well, if you bought that act, then hopefully, ashley and tucker did too. Look, that’s all that was, okay? It was just an act, I promise you. It’s nothing you need to worry about.

Traci: Why wouldn’t ashley be a little reluctant to accept your generous offer, jack? She doesn’t trust you. She doesn’t trust either one of you. And think about it, why would she?

Jack: I told ashley and I am telling you, that gift came from my heart with no strings attached.

Diane: It was what she wanted, traci. Jack truly thought she’d be pleased.

Traci: Really? After everything we’ve been through. After everything that happened the last time where ashley had to practically flee to paris, leaving jack and jabot flailing to keep from falling apart. Now, she’s supposed to believe that you’re just gonna hand it all back to her, with no agenda? That same non-agenda you’ve got billy wrapped up in the middle of, right? What the hell are you two up to? Because get ready, whatever it is, you are about to rip this family apart again.

Tucker: Wow, I can’t believe we actually did it. I am, at this very moment, without a doubt, the luckiest, happiest man in the world. To the most exquisite woman on the face of the earth.

Ashley: And, um, to the most, um…

Tucker: No, that’s right. That’s it. I’m– I’m the most.

Ashley: You are the most.

Tucker: I love you. Let’s dance. We never had our first dance.

Ashley: Okay. You know what?

Tucker: What?

Ashley: I still can’t believe I’m saying this. I love you too.
