Victoria: Good morning.

Ashland: I’m hoping a genuine italian espresso will give me the jolt that I need. I didn’t sleep very well.

Ashland: [ Sigh deeply ] Well, [Smacks lips] I couldn’t get past the fact that you weren’t in it.

Victoria: Oh, I see. So, I’m the reason for your insomnia?

Ashland: No, I did not say that. I know that I have to give you all the space that you need because what I [Inhales deeply] Told you about my past is a lot to process.

[ Sighs ] How did you sleep?

Victoria: I probably did more thinking than I did sleeping.

Ashland: Oh, last night, uh, your primary concern seemed to be about the company. And now that i’ve told you

[Sighs] Everything about my past, and you’ve had time to work through it, I want to know where your head is at. M-more importantly… where’s your heart? Are we having a wedding?

[ Footsteps approaching ]

Nikki: Victoria?

Victor: What good news!

Nikki: Ashland? What are you both doing here?

Billy: Yes, lily is flying back from california. Then, she’s gonna pick up johnny and katie. The three of them together will fly to italy. I’m going earlier. There’s a work emergency — a fire that I need to put out. One other thing, hannah. Do you mind letting victoria know the change of plans? She’s not taking my calls at the moment. Yeah. Okay, I appreciate it. I will. Thank you.

Gaines: Putting out fires, huh? Seems like you’re more interested in burning everything down.

Sally: So, I reached out to a bunch of fashion people in L.A.

Chloe: I thought you ruined all of your relationships there.

Sally: I did. Which is why, when I casually mentioned that I was going to the newman-locke wedding and hinted that there would be some fashion news to follow, I knew that they would turn around to everyone that they knew and say, “guess what sally spectra is up to now.”

Chloe: I can’t believe I let you talk me into this. Our plan now relies on gossipmongers.

Sally: Yeah, well, if we can’t rely on them to spread rumors, you can’t count on anything in this world.

Chloe: It’s just so risky. I mean, and if anything comes out about that wedding, we should be the ones publishing it.

Sally: Okay, first of all, stop saying “if.” There will be news. And second, if newman media’s new fashion platform puts out a story about me designing victoria’s wedding dress, it will look self-serving. But if another outlet does it, it’s a hot scoop. This way, we can get credibility from all these other sources.

Chloe: Okay. I like it. So, we pretend that we got scooped, but we are the ones who really planted the story.

Sally: It’ll be a huge boost for us.

Chloe: Now all you have to do is fly across the ocean with the dress and convince victoria to wear it just days before she walks down the aisle. What could possibly go wrong?

Adam: Any luck finding gaines?

[ Sighs ] Alright. Well, just keep searching. He’s got to be out there somewhere, and I have to find him before I get on a plane to italy.

Victoria: What are you doing here? Aren’t you supposed to be in milan?

Victoria: We left right after the ceremony so that we could come here and make sure everything was ready for your arrival. I am your matron of honor, after all.

Victoria: But we weren’t expecting you for another day. Is there something —

Victor: We just wanted to make sure that everything’s alright, you know? It’s a beautiful day outside. Going to be like that for the rest of the week. Ideal for a wedding. Nope

Nikki: Well, I’m glad that we all got here early. It’ll give us a chance to all go over the details, make sure everything is perfect. So, do you have any big concerns about anything?

Victoria: You know, before we get into that, I would love to hear about summer and kyle’s wedding.

Nikki: Oh, just beautiful. I mean, not as big of an affair as yours, of course, but it was just so simple and elegant. And, oh, do I have some photos to show you.

Nikki: Well, he’s not half wrong, there. Wait until you see summer in her marchetti gown. Exquisite. And she and kyle are so much in love, and that really came through in the ceremony.

Victoria: I’m so glad.

Nikki: But the best part of the wedding was little harrison. You know, he was our ring bearer, or as he liked to call it, “ring barrel.”

[ Laughter ]

Victor: By the way, he was the star of the show, you know.

Ashland: Yes.

Victor: And he’s so looking forward to doing the same thing for the two of you.

Ashland: Aww, can’t wait to see him.

Nikki: So, um, is everything good here?

Victoria: Y-yes, everything’s fine. We just wanted to get here early so that I could see firsthand that all of the preparations were being handled on schedule.

Nikki: And is everything to your satisfaction?

Victoria: Oh, so far, yes. But I’d like to show you the terrace. Maybe you have some additional ideas for the decorations.

Nikki: Oh. Sure.

Ashland: [ Inhales deeply ] I’m guessing that you didn’t rush here from milan to check on the floral arrangements.

Victor: I have news from home that’s got me concerned.

Victoria: So, after we got here, ashland finally came clean about the part of his past that he finds so shameful. It has to do with his former mentor, camilla rhodes, and how he acquired her tv stations.

Nikki: Oh. I know a lot of people have questions about that.

Victoria: Billy and nick. And as it turns out, there was something to their suspicions. When camilla passed away, she —

[Sighs] She left ashland her estate.

Nikki: Okay, well, that’s a simple explanation.

Victoria: No, no, mom, unfortunately, it isn’t that simple because she didn’t actually leave him anything. Ashland was working together with camilla’s lawyer, and — and they forged a — a letter that added him to her will.

Nikki: Are you kidding me?!

Victoria: No, I’m not. I’m not kidding you.

Nikki: My god! You know, you’d think that he would have told you, before you got to italy, that his entire empire is based on not a lie but a crime.

Victoria: Great.

Nikki: Oh, you were right to worry that there would be more secrets. This is a big one. And who’s to say it’s the last?

Victoria: I think that it might be. He swears that it is. And I’m inclined to believe him, because I — I let him know that I will not any more lies. I just — I wish he would have come to me with this in the first place.

Nikki: Oh, my darling, I feel so awful for you. I know how much you were looking forward to this week and everything. What can we do? Listen… if you want to cancel the wedding, I will contact the planner, and she will cancel it. She will alert all of the guests — hopefully, before they travel. And then you don’t have to put yourself through that.

Ashland: I don’t know if i can take anymore bad news.

Victor: Let’s have a seat. I got to tell you, that billy boy abbott is trying to start more trouble by digging into your past.

Ashland: Well, I knew that already.

Victor: One thing I need to warn you about. He may seem like an idiot at times — and he is — but he’s wily and tenacious. I’ve having my son adam watch him.

Ashland: Well, victor, I’m — I appreciate that, but I’m really not worried anymore. I’ve told victoria everything. Nobody has any leverage to hold over my head. Granted, I don’t want the story to go public. But you took care of gaines, right?

Victor: That’s the problem. Gaines has slipped off my radar.

Ashland: What? You don’t know where he is?

Victor: Don’t you worry about a thing. We’ll find him. Okay? I will allow no one or nothing to ruin my daughter’s big day.

Victoria: All that matters right now is protecting newman/locke. We can’t let the family business that we have all worked so hard for to be decimated by a scandal or the merger — this merger that is so important to our future.

Nikki: Merger or marriage? Because you seem to be mixing the two.

Victoria: Mother, I have looked at this from every angle. I can’t do anything that is gonna raise suspicions and cause some sort of an investigation into ashland or locke communications group.

Nikki: I understand that you are talking like a C.E.O. Right now, but I am speaking to you as your mother. What about your emotions?

Victoria: I cannot think about that right now. I need to focus. This wedding has to happen. It’s got to happen, mom.

[ Duffel bag zips ]

Billy: Well, that was quite the tale. Thank you for filling me in on ashland locke’s humble beginnings.

Gaines: Well, I love telling a good story, but I swear, all of that one is true.

Billy: Well, I expected something devious, but the audacity of a young man to forge a letter that will change camilla rhodes’ will, leaving her entire fortune to him, it’s almost impressive.

Gaines: Yeah, she wasn’t gonna leave him a cent. Ashland was desperate. I suppose that will be interesting to your readers if it’s worth all that to him.

Billy: That right there is not for clickbait. That’s to protect victoria from making a huge mistake, and every single dollar came from me personally. So I’m not letting you walk out of here until I have proof that the story you just told me is true.

Gaines: This should do the trick.

Billy: What is that?

Gaines: It’s a copy of the letter that she originally wrote to locke — the real one, not the one he and my father forged. It’s everything anyone needs to destroy ashland locke. We do it every night.

Gaines: Hold on, cowboy.

Billy: Jesse, we have a deal.

Gaines: Sure. This is a copy of the original. I’m not an idiot. And you don’t get anything unless I am guaranteed protection from victor.

Billy: There is a bag of cash sitting in front of you. And I told you that I will show you the exit plan to make sure that victor is off your back.

Gaines: I just need to know he won’t come after me.

Billy: And don’t kid yourself. He’s gonna come after you. But I will protect you.

[ Envelope taps tabletop ] Okay, you’re not gonna give me the letter, you read it to me right now.

Gaines: Alright.

[ Sighs ] “Dear ashland, you know I care deeply for you. You’re like a son I never had. Your drive and ambition have no limits. You have already overcome so much, and that struggle has been character-building” — yeah, certainly built him into a character, alright — a money-hungry tyrant — “which is why I’m not leaving you any inheritance. I feel it is in your best interests to make it on your own. Farewell, dear ashland. Go forth and prosper. I know you will. — Camilla.”

[ Paper rustling ]

Billy: A lot to digest in there. There’s one thing missing, though.

Gaines: What?

Billy: You said ashland and your father forged her deathbed letter, used as a codicil to change the will. Where’s your proof of that?

Chloe: Okay, well, I can follow up with some of my contacts in the morning. And if they haven’t heard anything about victoria’s wedding, I will just take a page out of your book, throw your name around, and plant a story of my own.

Sally: And if anyone wants you to go on record, deny it. It’ll intrigue them even more.

Chloe: I just really hope this doesn’t backfire.

Sally: This is everything we’ve ever wanted. Your big-picture plan was not just to be a platform for fashion news but a fashion powerhouse, complete with our own designs. So, here we go.

Chloe: [ Chuckles ] Okay. [ Chuckles ] You should really get ready soon. You have to meet adam.

Sally: Mm, it’s a private jet. They’ll wait.

Chloe: [ Chuckles ] I’m gonna go to the airport with you. I want to get one last glimpse of the wedding dress that is going to change our lives.

Nikki: You know who you sound like when you talk like that? Your father.

Victoria: [ Gasps ] My thinking on this is correct. There’s no deviation, no red flags that anyone from the outside can latch onto. We have to keep this contained.

Nikki: Darling, that might be smart for business, but not for you. I know how seriously you take your vows. Now, is this wedding just for show? Are you forcing yourself into a marriage that just shouldn’t happen?

Victoria: I am not forcing myself to do anything.

Nikki: Well, how do you know you’re not gonna be playing right into ashland’s hands?

Victoria: Would you stop it? I know what I’m doing. Ashland is smart enough to not try to keep anything else from me.

Nikki: And after all of this, you really think that the two of you could have a happy marriage?

Victoria: Look, I’ll handle it, alright? My one concern right now is billy.

Nikki: What about him?

Victoria: He seems very determined to derail the ceremony. He’s been leaving me messages, telling me that I’m making a mistake. He says that he has information that he thinks that i should know.

Nikki: Maybe he does.

Victoria: No, he doesn’T. Ashland has told me everything. Nothing that billy is gonna say to me is gonna be news to me. He cannot sway my decision about going through with this wedding. But he can ruin our plans if he finds out the truth and decides that he wants to expose this story to the world.

Gaines: This letter is all the evidence you need. Locke thinks so. He’s been paying me to keep it secret for years.

Billy: How did you get that?

Gaines: From my father’s dossier before he destroyed the evidence of the forgery.

Billy: And when was that?

Gaines: A long time ago.

Billy: And nobody else knew what they were up to?

Gaines: [ Sighs ] No.

Billy: A clerk, a secretary, no one?

Gaines: I sincerely doubt it. My father did all of this on his own. Camilla had no family. There was nobody interested in the will, and nobody to contest it when they filed the codicil.

Billy: What did she plan to do with everything, just bury it alongside her?

Gaines: Well, she had some charities set up, but they had no idea of her plans to bequeath them anything.

Billy: What charities? In a way, locke is stealing from them.

Gaines: She was eccentric. Exotic stuff — homes for wayward cats, exotic plants, things like that.

Billy: Oh, so, he got pissed off for being passed over by felines and flowers?

Gaines: No. Locke is a bastard and a master manipulator. He convinced my father that he had been wronged by camilla. And so they concocted this plan to create this false document so that he could set things right in his mind.

Billy: You seem to have a lot of animosity towards ashland.

Gaines: You’re damn right, I do. I told you, this is personal.

Billy: Yeah, you did. But you haven’t told me why yet. If you’re on medicare, remember,

Gaines: I spent my whole life jumping through hoops, trying to impress my father. He was a workaholic. It wasn’t easy getting his attention. And harder still to impress him. But when this kid showed up with camilla, he took to him right away, singing his praises. “Oh, that ashland is a real go-getter. It made me sick.

Billy: I understand that. So you wanted to do something about it.

Gaines: When ashland inherited all that money, I knew something was wrong. So I decided to do some digging, and I found, under lock and key, my father’s file on camilla rhodes. And there was the original will and the authentic letter explaining to him why he wasn’t gonna receive any inheritance. I made a snap decision. And I took the letter. Shortly thereafter, all the files were destroyed.

Billy: [ Chuckles ] Good timing.

Gaines: I got lucky. And I told my father about it, he was angry. More ashamed than anything. He was adamant that I keep it to myself, because if the story got out, it would destroy him. So I kept it a secret all these years… till he died. I kept reading stories about ashland. I got angrier and angrier. I don’t know, maybe it was, uh, delayed grief for the father i had had stolen from me. Ashland needs to pay.

Billy: But he has been.

Gaines: That money that he’s given me means nothing to him. He built his life and his business on lies, and he pulled my father into that deceit.

Billy: But, jesse, it doesn’t sound like your father was blackmailed in any way. He seemed like a willing participant.

Gaines: My dad was a good man. He played by the rules his entire life until locke came along. He manipulated. Yeah, sure, he got some financial gain. The forged codicil gave him out a payment, locke offered him a lucrative position, so it seemed like a victimless crime. But that crime, it weighed on him, and I am certain that’s what drove him to an early grave. So, yeah. Yeah, it’s personal.

Billy: I don’t know if you’ve heard, but ashland locke could, potentially, be heading to a premature demise himself.

Gaines: Yeah. I know. I almost felt bad for him.

Billy: Almost?

Gaines: Made him seem human. But when I came here to get my final payoff, he was so dismissive and condescending.

Billy: You can’t blame a guy for being a little rude to the person that’s blackmailing him.

Gaines: Ashland locke is a fraud and a master manipulator. Camilla rhodes was right about one thing — he is a survivor. He’ll ruin people to save himself. That’s why I came back here, why I risked crossing victor newman to give you what you need to take locke down. I want my revenge. I want to blow up locke’s life while he is still alive to suffer.

Victor: How are you holding up? I know firsthand how difficult it is when the past catches up with you. It’s not affecting your health, is it?

Ashland: Not at all. I-I-I’m fine. [ Sighs ] The only thing weighing on me is the distress this is causing victoria. I hate that all of this is bringing her pain after she has brought me so much joy. And, hell, she’s given me a reason to live.

Victor: Well, we’ve got to stop the trouble that both billy boy abbott and gaines are causing.

Ashland: Well, that may be, but I’m the one to blame here, victor. The choices that I made in the past came back to haunt me. And even if it was decades ago, and I don’t see myself any longer as the man who made those choices, there it is.

Victor: Well, I respect you for taking responsibility. And I respect you for coming clean with my daughter about your past. That could not have been easy.

Ashland: I just hope it doesn’t mean I will lose victoria.

Nikki: I guess this wedding is going to happen. I hope you’ve changed your mind about letting your brother attend, because abby decided to stay home with the baby, and it would be nice to have some family for support.

Victoria: Well, adam will be there, won’t he?

Nikki: [ Laughing ] Oh, my god, are you hearing yourself? You can’t let him be your only sibling at the wedding. Nicholas was very upset that you rescinded his invitation.

Victoria: I guess he should have thought of that before he dug up dirt on my fiancé.

Nikki: [ Sighs ] I really think you are lashing out at the wrong people. Shouldn’t you be upset with the man who kept secrets from you?

Victoria: Oh, mother, how many secrets has dad kept from you over the years — things that have only come to light because he had no choice and he had to come clean about it?

Nikki: Far too many, and I’m trying to spare you that kind of pain.

Victoria: Look, mom, my point is, is that no marriage is perfect. I have looked at this closely, mother.

[ Sighs ] It’s not like ashland committed some crime against me and my family. What he did happened 40 years ago. There’s no need for us to relive it. It can just end here. And I should have been able to trust nicholas.

Nikki: You can.

Victoria: No, I can’T. He betrayed my confidence. He should have stood by my side, which is exactly what I would have done if the roles were reversed. What nicholas did — it hurt me more than anything.

Nikki: Alright, alright.

[ Sighs ] I don’t want to argue with you. You don’t want to listen to what I have to say anyway. Just answer me this. What do you feel in your heart about ashland?

Victoria: I don’t know.

Adam: You know I love you, right? That’s right. I’m your dad, so I can say it no matter how old you get. I love you, connor newman. How do you like that?

[ Chuckles ] Yeah, I, uh — I’ll bring you back something from italy, okay? Alright? Love you. Good night.

Sally: How’s your son?

Adam: He is more excited about me going to italy than I am. Shouldn’t you be packing for our trip?

Sally: I needed a coffee. What’s your excuse?

Adam: Tying up a loose end before we, uh, leave.

P.I.: I have an update on jesse gaines.

[ Sighs ]

Adam: So, you haven’t found gaines, but you think billy has?

P.I.: Security footage caught gaines entering abbott’s apartment building tonight.

Adam: Is billy there?

P.I.: Yes, and they’re still inside, both of them. Want me to stay close?

Adam: No. Um, I’ll take it from here. Good work.

P.I.: You got it.

Sally: What’s with all the mysterious cloak-and-dagger business?

Adam: I, um — I have to take care of something. I’ll meet you at the airport. Just don’t be late for wheels-up.

Sally: Sounds exciting and exotic. If you’re trying to impress me, I have been on private jets before.

Adam: I’m not trying to impress you or anyone. I just want a comfortable, peaceful trip to italy, okay? You remember that I’m taking you as a friendly favor, not a date, right?

Sally: But can’t it at least be the start of a beautiful friendship?

Adam: No.

Sally: Ow. Okay. Need to lighten up. I was teasing you. I know what this trip is about.

Adam: You just can’t help yourself, can you?

Billy: How many other people know about this scam with camilla’s will?

Gaines: As far as I know, you, me, locke, and victor.

Billy: Why would victor pay you? What benefit does he get by squashing the story? I mean, he can’t possibly condone victoria’s wedding after hearing this news, so…

Gaines: Maybe victor newman doesn’t see what locke did as a crime. I’m sure he’s done similar things on his way to the top. The real question is, why are you out to get ashland?

Billy: Victoria is the mother of my children. And she’s a good person. And I’ve caused her enough pain. I don’t want to see her suffer anymore.

Gaines: I don’t buy that you’re being noble.

Billy: I don’t care. You don’t need to understand anything. The only person that needs to know the truth is victoria. And she can make whatever decision she wants.

[ Sighs ] But right now, she is not taking my calls. So I’m going to tuscany early. And you’re coming with me because she is not gonna believe me unless I give her the proof from the horse’s mouth.

Victor: So, how does it look out there?

Nikki: Gorgeous.

Victor: Yeah?

Nikki: An idyllic spot.

Victoria: I think it’s the perfect backdrop for us to exchange our vows.

Ashland: What does that mean?

Victoria: Well, you know, we have a lot to do if we’re gonna pull off the wedding of the year.

Victor: I’m delighted to hear that.

Ashland: Maybe we should take a walk around the grounds.

Nikki: Before you do that, could you take us to our room? The sooner we get settled, the sooner we can all pitch in and help.

Victoria: Sure. Of course I will.

Nikki: Thank you. Still fresh

Chloe: Hi. What’s going on here?

Adam: Uh, I just got a message from the editor of a fashion magazine. Trust me, you’ve heard of her. Um, she just found out that sally is going to tuscany, and newman media is promising to give a scoop, and she wants confirmation.

Sally: Well, I can confirm that I am going there for the wedding, and when victoria wears my dress that I made for her —

Adam: Wait, wait, wait, the whole reason that I’m going to this wedding is to show that I’m committed to playing a role in my family. This doesn’t help. Makes it look like it’s a self-serving business trip, sally.

Chloe: It wasn’t sally. It was me. I leaked the story. I got excited, I told a friend, and you know how fast gossip travels.

Adam: See, that — that was reckless.

Chloe: I — I’m sorry. But it was scoop about fashion, not about dirt.

Adam: But the wedding dress?

Chloe: Sally’s creation.

Sally: Hello.

Adam: What if victoria doesn’t wear the gown?

Sally: She’s gonna love it.

Adam: Look, I’m — I’m gonna give you a ride over there. That’s it. Not gonna get you an audience with victoria. She got enough on her plate, and I’m not exactly her favorite person.

Sally: I know it seems like I’m flirting with disaster here, but I’m not. Okay, I’m just putting myself in the right place at the right time, with your help. So, thank you, both of you, for having faith in me.

Adam: Okay, I have to go. Alright? We’ll discuss it later. But, please, please, no more leaks or gossip. I don’t want anything to take attention away from victoria’s big day.

Sally: [ Sighs ]

[ Door opens ]

Victoria: So, it looks like your bags beat you here.

Victor: I got to tell you, the staff is absolutely first-class.

Victoria: Do you want to rest, and then we can meet for lunch? Nate and elena will be flying in later.

Nikki: Oh, well, maybe they could join us. That would be nice.

Victor: Sweetheart, would you mind giving me some time alone with victoria?

Nikki: Yes, of course. I will make arrangements for lunch?

Victor: Si, my love. So, I understand that ashland told you everything.

Victoria: Yes, he did.

Victor: [ Sighs ] How do you feel about it?

Victoria: Well, obviously, it was a lot to take in.

[ Sighs ] And not just the money from camilla, but I’m assuming that nick told you how he took the name ashland locke.

Victor: Yeah.

Victoria: [ Sighs ]

Victor: I’ve been filled in. And — and never mind nicholas. He’s alright.

Victoria: He had no right to dig up that information himself.

Victor: Sweetheart, forgive him for that. He did that to protect you. I wish you hadn’t rescinded his invitation. I was looking forward to having nicholas and adam and you all together at the same wonderful event.

Victoria: [ Sighs ] Daddy, I cannot let this go so easily. He’s gonna have to earn my forgiveness.

Chloe: You know, I was worried there. I thought that adam was gonna pull the plug on you being his plus-one.

Sally: Thank you.

Chloe: For what?

Sally: Well, for stepping in and taking the blame for the leak. But I have to ask. Why did you cover for me?

Chloe: Well, I would rather him be mad at me than at you. I’m used to it.

Sally: Well, I owe you.

Chloe: Yeah, you do. And don’t worry, I will accept it, but for right now, I just need you to guard this dress with your life on this trip.

Sally: Well, good thing we’re going on a private jet. Could you imagine me trying to shove that thing into an overhead bin of a commercial flight?

Chloe: No, it would have been a disaster.

Sally: I had to use the most delicate, luxurious material to make sure it was worthy of a newman bride.

Chloe: Well, that’s why I’m relieved that you are getting newman-level transportation, ’cause, normally, I would be opposed to someone traveling and spending hours in an enclosed space with adam.

Sally: All the stars are aligning. I’m going to spend the entire trip visualizing victoria strutting down the aisle wearing my design, because I believe in the power of positive thinking.

Chloe: I do love your confidence, but you really should listen to adam, because there is a chance that you’re going to get there and victoria is not going to give you the time of day, and then it will just be a wasted trip.

Sally: I understand.

Chloe: Okay, and I — I know I’ve said this to you before, but please just — please just go easy on — on the flirting. You know, I mean, I just know what adam is like when he has that single-minded look in his eye. You really don’t want to cross him.

Sally: Fine. But I think you have forgotten your can-do spirit, ’cause this is what it looks like when you want something so badly that you will it into existence. Haven’t you ever done that before?

Chloe: I can’t believe I’ve hitched my wagon to someone nuttier than me.

Sally: [ Chuckles ]

Chloe: Okay. Have a great trip. I wish you luck. And please just get victoria to say “yes to the dress.” I’m a ganiac, ganiac, check my drawers Some things are good to know. Like where to find the cheapest gas in town, and which supermarket gives you the most bang for your buck. Something else that’s good to know? Nate: Grazie.

Elena: [ Chuckles ] I held off on ordering the pasta since we are about to go to italy, and I expect to have the best pasta I have ever tasted in my life.

Nate: Hmm. What is pasta made out of, flour and water? You think they have magical ingredients out there.

Elena: I think everything about that place is gonna be magical.

Nate: [ Chuckles ] Far be it from me to argue with that logic.

Elena: Oh, let me live in my fantasy. I’ve never been to italy, and i am so excited.

Billy: Oh, italy, you are going to have a blast.

Elena: Hey, you.

Billy: Hi. And actually, speaking of this double date we’ve been trying to organize, we should do it in italy. Tuscany’s perfect. Some of the best restaurants in the world there are blocks away from the palazzo.

Elena: Well, when are you and lily leaving? Does it make sense for us just to go together?

Billy: I don’t know, maybe. What’s your plan?

Nate: Well, ashland’s sending over his jet from tuscany so we can fly out tonight.

Billy: Yeah, that’s a bummer. Lily is still visiting her daughter, and we got kids’ schedules to figure out, and on top of that, ashland would probably re-route us to antarctica if he knew I was on that plane.

Nate: Mm, yeah, lily mentioned there’s some tension between you guys.

Billy: Well, you know me, i can be a little blunt for my own good. And I’ve told both victoria and ashland that I feel like they’re rushing into things.

Elena: Well, I mean, they definitely have, but I’m sure you can understand why.

Billy: Sure, I get it. He’s on borrowed time. I still feel like there are other considerations that should take precedence.

Nate: Well, since you’re going to the wedding, I take it that you accepted that it’s happening.

Billy: I wouldn’t go that far. I still feel like there’s time for victoria to change her mind, and I’m hoping she does.

Sally: Ready for our trip?

Adam: Hey. What’s up?

Sally: We are going to need a big car to pick us up from the airport in tuscany because i have a lot of luggage.

Adam: Really? Why? It’s not like we’re going for that long.

Sally: Well, I’m taking victoria’s wedding dress and all the paraphernalia that goes along with it, like my sewing machine and supplies, a portable steamer, shoes, accessories.

Billy: Okay, okay, I’ll reserve a limo. Or maybe two.

Sally: That will work.

Adam: I know that you put a lot of work into transporting the dress, but do you have any idea how you’re actually gonna get it in front of her?

Sally: I am still working on that, but, hey, I got the first 5,000 miles planned out, so that last little stretch should be a piece of cake, right?

Adam: The eternal optimist.

Sally: Well, I’m sure I’ll come up with a strategy once i have a chance to scope out the villa.

Adam: Palazzo.

Sally: Okay. Is that not the same thing?

Adam: Well, traditionally, a villa was a country home with gardens as a getaway, whereas the palazzo was the official residence in town. Mm-hmm. But nowadays, you’re right. It’s probably a distinction without much of a difference.

Sally: Well, I’m guessing that the newman family palazzo is gorgeous beyond belief, old, elegant, luxurious.

Adam: I assume so. I’ve never been there myself, actually.

Sally: Well, good, we can explore it together.

Adam: [ Sighs ] Sally, we’re flying over on the same jet. Doesn’t mean we’re together.

Sally: Eh, sounds to me like another distinction without a difference.

Victoria: So do you feel better now that you’ve had something to eat?

Ashland: I’m a little out of practice jetting off to europe. My body clock’s a little messed up, but that wonderful lunch we had has revived me.

Victoria: Good. I hope you’re finally ready to be completely honest with me.

Ashland: It’s time. But I feel compelled to warn you, once I share with you what I’ve done, and if you choose not to expose what I’ve done — and I trust that you won’t — you’ll become complicit, an accessory after the fact, at least in the eye of the public.

Victoria: Does this have to do with an actual crime?

Ashland: It does. Do you still want to know?

Victoria: [ Sighs ] Tell me everything.

We are travel companions and colleagues, end of story. And I also will make sure that nobody else gets the wrong impression, since I get the feeling that is your biggest concern.

Adam: I would call that my second-biggest concern, other than making sure you don’t get the wrong idea either.

Sally: Mission accomplished.

Adam: Um, there’s something that I need to take care of, so if there’s nothing else…

Sally: Nope. Oh, yes, actually, a plan for later. Are you picking me up or am i meeting you at the airport with all my gear?

Chloe: Hey, guys. What’s this about an airport?

Sally: Chloe, hi. I forget to mention this to you earlier. You ran off too fast. Adam was kind enough to offer me a lift to tuscany.

Adam: Well, I didn’t so much as offer as surrendered to her persistent pleas.

Sally: Yet another distinction without a difference. The point is, I’m going. Isn’t that great?

Chloe: Well, this is interesting news.

Adam: I got to run.

Sally: Text me the logistics, okay?

Adam: Will do.

Chloe: You really need to rethink this.

Elena: I’m not sure how much time you’ve actually gotten to spend with ashland and victoria, but nate and I have become friends with them, and regardless of what you feel about ashland, trust me, he adores her.

Billy: Well, of course he does. What’s not to love? Okay, look, before you go there, let me just be very clear. I have moved on, okay? Lily and I are deliriously happy. I am not pining for my ex, and i hope that victoria is happy as well. And if ashland lived up to the hype, I’d be a fan, too. But certain things have come to light.

Nate: What things?

Billy: Let’s just say I don’t believe he’s the man that he says he is.

Ashland: Well, to understand the choices I made, you have to understand my relationship with camilla rhodes.

Victoria: Your mentor, early on.

Ashland: We met when I first went for my interview. Well, not my interview, it was my friend’s — the original ashland, the real ashland. I was hoping I could bluff my way through it. Ashland was fascinated by news and television and broadcast journalism. He talked about it constantly. Some of it actually sunk in. I did what little research i could, but I was a kid, I was a mess. I’m — I was all alone in the world. I… I had just been in a brutal car accident. I was thrown from the vehicle. I was in shock. I had watched my friend die before my eyes. And now all I had to go on was this idea, this conviction that I wanted to live ashland’s life for him. To somehow make it up to him. Camilla had other candidates for the job that day who were better prepared, better dressed, and more articulate, but no one wanted it more than I did, and she could sense that, and so she gave me a shot. I started off basically as a gofer, and it could have ended there, but she took a liking to me and gave me opportunities and took me under her wing.

Victoria: You were just a boy without a family. You didn’t even have a friend in the world. That must have meant a lot to you.

Ashland: Yeah, it meant everything. Believe me. And I thought it did to her, as well. She had no family, she had no kids. Her husband had died. She was all alone in the world, more or less. Over time, I, you know, worked hard and earned her trust, and basically she treated me like the son that she never had. And from that trust and faith in me, she helped me map out a future for myself in the media realm that I could never have manifested on my own in any way. And then it all went to hell.

 

Billy: Look, I understand you see ashland in a different light, and that’s fine. He’s a charismatic guy. I’m sure he’s fun to be around.

Nate: No, there’s more to our friendship than that. I admire the man tremendously. I mean, he’s battling a potentially fatal illness, undergoing intensive treatment, and he’s handling the whole ordeal with so much grace. That says a lot about his character.

Billy: No doubt.

Elena: Frankly, if I were you, I would do what I could to support ashland and victoria instead of trying to hold him accountable for something he may have done ages ago.

Nate: Look, billy, you have a past of your own, and lily has chosen to believe you’ve learned and grown from that. She accepts you for the man you are today.

Billy: No, you’re right. Lily knows all about my past. We’ve known each other forever, and I have been open and honest with her about everything. But I cannot say the same thing about ashland. But it doesn’t matter because if looking out for my children and their mother makes me a hypocrite, then I am fine with that. But I am not about to turn a blind eye and ignore the red flags.

Elena: What does that mean, exactly? Do you intend to interfere with the wedding?

Billy: No, victoria’s very capable of of making her own decisions. I just want to make sure that she knows all the facts.

Nate: The “facts” — according to whom?

[ Cellphone chimes ] Billy.

Billy: I’m sorry. Something very important has come up that I need to deal with. I’ll see you in italy.

Nate: I don’t like the sound of that.

Sally: It doesn’t matter how I get to italy or with whom. The important thing is that i haven’t missed my opportunity to present my wedding dress to victoria. And once she sees what I created just for her, in my heart, i know that’ll be it. She’ll find it irresistible.

Chloe: I still think it’s an incredible long shot.

Sally: Yes, I know. You keep saying that, but I’ve put so much time and energy into this. I have to at least try.

Chloe: Fine. But with adam?

Sally: He’s the bride’s brother, has an actual invite, and I need a way to get past the security that’s bound to be there.

Chloe: Okay, I get it, I get it, but it doesn’t mean I like it.

Sally: Adam and I just clarified. We are not going over there as a couple. This is not some epic date. He is going for family, and I am going for the dress. Our interests just happen to coincide. This is not about romance.

Chloe: Right. A lavish wedding in a magnificent italian palazzo — who could even think about romance in a setting like that?

Sally: You worry too much.

Ashland: There’s no excuse for what I did, the choices i made. But at least I want to try and explain. You see, I was just…a little boy at the time. I was a kid, as you said. And camilla had been my entire support system in so many ways. She’d taken care of me and protected me in ways that my mother wouldn’t or couldn’t do, and I was so grateful for that. When she passed away, it was a terrible loss. It hit me almost as hard as when ashland died. She had always talked to me about, you know, how much she appreciated and supported me and admired me, and I just assumed that there would be some provision for me in her will.

Victoria: There wasn’t?

Ashland: Her lawyer was the senior jesse gaines, and he had told me that her will stipulated that her estate were to go to a charity. And these weren’t reputable institutions… or known foundations. Frivolous little things that she had gotten a kick out of when she was alivE. A cat sanctuary, for god’s sake. It just felt like, to me, that she had taken the trust and faith that I had in her and made a mockery of it. It was a — it was a big joke. I know it sounds like that I’m a spoiled little brat and i somehow was entitled to receive this — her entire estate, but… I just need you to understand —

Victoria: Why did she cut you out of her will? Was she upset with you or something?

Ashland: No, no, it wasn’t that. Jesse had told me that he had read a letter that she wrote stipulating that she didn’t think that I needed to get by on any inheritance in order to be successful, that I could make it on my own, that she had faith in me, and she was right. I could. But I was immature and angry and confused about the whole thing, and jesse, he was angry on my behalf, as well.

Victoria: Why would it matter to him?

Ashland: Well, he had taken a liking to me. When camilla introduced us, she encouraged him to take on more of a paternal role in my life. And it was incomprehensible to him that she would scatter this vast estate to this motley collection of beneficiaries. He fed my resentment. And he said that he had tried to talk camilla out of her plan, but that she wouldn’t be moved. So after stewing over the injustice for a while, jesse and I came to realize that we could fix it. Elena: If the budget’s there, I’d like to hire a full-time nurse, someone paid. That way, the clinic is never understaffed in case we’re low on volunteers.

Nate: Mm, great idea. I’ll talk to devon and see where things stand.

Adam: Hey, guys, I’m so sorry to interrupt. Have you seen billy? I was supposed to meet him here. I was a little late.

Elena: He was here a few minutes ago.

Nate: You just missed him.

Adam: [ Exhales sharply ] Must have thought I flaked on him. Sure now he’s mad.

Elena: Uh, no. Nate and I both spoke to him, and he didn’t seem angry and he also didn’t mention you. He just got a text message and he rushed out.

Nate: Yeah, we just assumed there was some breaking news somewhere.

Adam: Huh. Maybe so.

Ashland: So jesse forged a new letter that was supposedly written by camilla the night before she died, with instructions to revise the will, and it effectively became a codicil to the original will, overriding its provisions.

Victoria: How much did “camilla” leave you in this letter?

Ashland: All of her estate. We were hurt and angry and did a terrible thing. Had camilla known what we had done, she would have been outraged.

Victoria: So you used her money to buy the tv stations?

Ashland: Which became the foundation for my media empire.

Victoria: All built on a lie and stolen funds.

Ashland: Camilla deserved so much better after all that she had done for me. And when I had grown up and realized what I had done, it was just too late to change it and there was no point in exposing jesse’s complicity.

Victoria: I don’t understand. Why would he take such an enormous risk? What was in it for him?

Ashland: Well, it wasn’t as big of a risk as you might think. There was no one to challenge it. Camilla had no other heirs. Making me the beneficiary of her estate seemed to be a logical choice. I mean, it was generous, but not suspicious. Jesse had just really wanted my service and commitment to her and her company to be financially rewarded.

Victoria: And his son, too. Gaines junior. He works for you, doesn’t he? Is he in on this?

Ashland: Absolutely not. Junior is an idiot, an absolutely worthless human being. Even his father knew that, and there was no way that he was gonna take him into his confidence.

Victoria: Well, he must have known something about it. You wouldn’t have just put an idiot on your payroll. Why did he suddenly show up in genoa city? Why is he harassing you?

Ashland: Well, gaines senior had made a foolish mistake. He did not dispose of the note that camilla wrote, stipulating that I was to receive no inheritance, and…junior found out about that and…he decided to use it for future leverage.

Victoria: Of course he did.

Ashland: So after his father died, there was no legal or ethical threat, and so he decided to blackmail me. And he’s been doing it for years. And when he found out that I was dying, he panicked and realized, “whoa, this is the end of the gravy train.” And he — he’s really not bright enough to create any other source of an income or a living, so he demanded that I make one last lump sum payment.

Victoria: Let me guess. That lump sum of money that you went to your banker for wasn’t for a surprise wedding present. It was to pay off jesse.

Ashland: I’m ashamed that i lied to you and that I did so easily. That scared little boy that became a ruthless cutthroat. After living that way for a lifetime, it’s become second nature. And I so desperately wanted to shield you from the ugliness of all this.

Victoria: So where do things stand with gaines now? You paid him off? Is he gone?

Ashland: Yes and no. Gaines is gone, but I’m not the one who paid him off. Your father beat me to it.

Marty: Welcome home.

Billy: Marty. You found the key okay? Any trouble getting in?

Marty: Nope, none.

Billy: Good. Well, to say that I was blown away by the text message you sent would be an understatement. The fact that you and your team were able to find gaines and bring him back to genoa city so quickly is a good thing. Where is he?

Marty: Mr. Gaines, would you join us, please?

Billy: Jesse. It’s good to see you again.

Adam: I’m on the chanccomm site. I don’t see any recent blockbusters. So whatever billy was working on, it must be still in progress.

Nate: Can I ask — why were you meeting with him in the first place? I thought you two weren’t on the best of terms.

Adam: That’s the reason. My sister’s wedding in italy is coming up, so I wanted to negotiate a temporary truce in in the sake of family unity.

Elena: Wait. Are you going?

Adam: [ Chuckling ] Yeah. Yeah, it surprised me, too. But I’m happy to accept the invite. Nick and I are in a much better place after faith’s transplant, and I want to improve my relationship with victoria, too. Billy and I — we will never see eye to eye on much, but I was hoping we could at least agree to be happy for victoria and ashland and make a pact not to disrupt the wedding. What? What’d I say?

Nate: I wouldn’t be so sure you’re on the same page about that.

Adam: Really? Why is that?

Elena: Ask billy. He’s very open about his feelings when it comes to the wedding.

Adam: Fair enough.

Elena: Fyi — we will be in tuscany, as well. Nate is actually ashland’s best man.

Adam: You are? That is terrific.

Nate: I was pleased to be asked.

Adam: Oh. Well, I look forward to seeing you both there.

Nate: Alright. Well, catch you later.

Adam: Catch you later.

Elena: See you soon. Hmm. Wow. I’m really glad that adam is being supportive of his sister. I wouldn’t have expected that.

Nate: He’s probably trying to score points with victor.

Elena: True.

Nate: Whatever the reason is, it’s a good thing. Adam can be trouble. And ashland and victoria have enough to deal with.

[ Lock engages ]

Billy: Well, jesse, where did we leave off? Oh, yes. I remember. You promised to give me the scoop on how ashland locke started in business. And then you up and vanished.

Gaines: What can I say? I got a better offer.

Billy: From victor newman, I am to assume? How much did he pay you?

Gaines: More than you were offering before and less than I’m expecting you to offer now.

Billy: Okay. So you want to re-open negotiations.

Gaines: Hold on a second. We need to settle something else first.

Billy: Sure. What is it?

Gaines: Well, newman won’t be happy that I gave his people the slip. He’s gonna be even more furious if I go back on my word and tell you what I know about locke. So I need you to guarantee me protection from him, or this conversation ends right now.

Victoria: Are you saying that you went to my father for help in dealing with gaines?

Ashland: No, of course not.

Victoria: Well, then how did this happen?

Ashland: I-I don’t know how victor figured it out, but when I showed up to the grand phoenix with cash to pay off gaines, gaines was gone and victor was there. He said he’d handled it, and he didn’t want me to think about it any further.

Victoria: You must have been in shock over this.

Ashland: To put it mildly.

Victoria: I don’t understand. Why would my father intervene?

Ashland: Well, he made it clear that it wasn’t for my sake.

[ Chuckles ] He loves you so much and he just sees how happy you are and he wants you to stay that way. He said, “consider it a wedding gift.”

Victoria: There has to be something more.

Ashland: Well, nothing is ever simple when it comes to victor newman. And I guess with the newman/locke merger, he was worried about its public image.

Victoria: You’re probably right.

Ashland: I would imagine with victor that he’d take some delight in knowing that he’s got some leverage over me. But aside from that, I take the man at his word. He said he understood what i had gone through, as he had made some difficult choices when he was young that he had regretted, and that he didn’t want foolish things that I had done in my youth to get in the way of our future together.

Victoria: Well, it sounds like you and my father have come to quite an understandinG.

Ashland: Well, still, as much as I appreciate what victor has done, the threat hasn’t been eliminated. Far from it. I brought in ensure max protein, with thirty grams of protein.

Billy: I’m confident I can protect you from victor. I got you here safely, didn’t I?

Gaines: I’m gonna need more than just your word. I want to sign off on every detail of whatever plan your security team comes up with for me.

Billy: I’m sure we can find a way to put your mind at ease. I do have one question, though. If you are concerned about victor’s reaction, why are you here in the first place?

Gaines: You’re complaining?

Billy: No, not at all. It just feels like there’s more to this than money.

Gaines: Oh. Well, what is your theory?

Billy: Well, if it was just money, you could go back to victor and ask for more — or ashland. We both know they have deeper pockets than I do. Of course, they’re gonna keep this story quiet, and that doesn’t sit well with you. You want the truth to see the light of day, every shady thing that ashland did to start his career. My question is — why? What’s your beef with him?

Gaines: Alright. I admit it. It is personal. And you will find out why after we make our deal, not before.

Elena: Mmm, that was amazing.

Nate: Any room for dessert?

Elena: Actually, I don’t think we have time. I need to finish packing.

Nate: Okay. Didn’t you say you were mostly done with that last night?

Elena: Well, there’s packing, and then there’s finishing packing, which involves me going over my checklists and playing my favorite game of, “what did i forget?” Because what if we decide to go climb the leaning tower of pisa and I don’t have my walking shoes?

Nate: Got it. Because there’s no place in europe where you couldn’t just buy another pair.

Elena: I just want this to go well. This trip is really important to me. And I think it’s going to be a great step forward for us both. And if I haven’t said it before, I am really glad that you decided to give us another chance to get things right.

Nate: I am feeling good about us, too, and I can’t wait to take off from work and spend time together. It wouldn’t even have to be one of the most beautiful countries on earth. It could be fresno, for all i care.

Elena: Fresno?! Yeah, I guess fresno has a lot to offer. I’m pretty sure it’s the raisin capital of the world.

[ Both laugh ] But I think it’s better we stick with the original plan.

Nate: [ Sighs ] If you insist.

[ Both laugh ]

Victoria: Gaines is still a threat? After my father dealt with him? Is — is there some loose end that he didn’t know about?

Ashland: Victor handled this without consulting me, so he didn’t know about the first letter or that he had to retrieve it in order to neutralize gaines. Now gaines can hold that over my head, irrespective of how much money we throw at him, because he despises me and he always has.

Victoria: Why?

Ashland: His father had zero respect for him. He would compare junior to me, unfavorably, to his face.

Victoria: It just sounds like a twisted form of sibling rivalry.

Ashland: Yeah. I suspect that he has been fantasizing about taking me down for quite some time, but only due to my financial largess does he hesitate to go through with it. But now that my days are possibly coming to an end, gaines probably realizes it’s now or never.

Victoria: And if he tries to come after you in any way, you do realize that it’s gonna blow back on my company, don’t you?

Ashland: Our company.

Victoria: Fraud, conspiracy, grand theft. This is gonna be a huge scandal.

Ashland: Yeah —

Victoria: And you’re right, you know. If I don’t come forward right away, I’m — I’m gonna be complicit.

Ashland: I think that we’re protected from any legal repercussions.

Victoria: Are you sure?

Adam: Uh, soon. I have some information that, uh, you’ll want to know.

Victor: What is it?

Adam: I learned billy got a tip of some sort earlier today. Apparently, he’s still focused on putting a stop to the wedding, which leads me to believe that it’s something to do with ashland.

Victor: That’s very disturbing, son. I just learned that jesse gaines slipped through the fingers of my security team. And I have a feeling that billy boy abbott had something to do with it.

Adam: Well, wouldn’t shock me.

Victor: Please stay on it, okay? Got to make sure that this man does not cause any further damage. Is that clear?

Adam: Very clear.

Billy: Please. We have a lot to talk about.

Gaines: We haven’t settled —

Billy: I understand we haven’t worked out the details of our arrangement. But it is clear to me that you want the facts to see the light of day. And I sure as hell want to hear them.

Gaines: Sounds like a good start.

Billy: So, I have deduced that your attorney father and ashland locke cooked up a scheme that launched his career. Gave him the seed money to buy the two stations. Now, I’m guessing that deal was shady at best, possibly outright illegal.

Gaines: You’re on the right track.

Billy: Thank you for the confirmation.

Gaines: And as long as you can guarantee me protection from victor and we settle on the money, I’ll tell you everything you want to know.

Victoria: As ceo of the merged company, it is my responsibility to focus on the business aspect of this first.

[ Sighs ] If this story comes out, it is gonna undermine everything that we’ve accomplished.

Ashland: Victoria —

Victoria: I have spent years trying to make newman strong and resilient. And now I have to worry about a ticking time bomb!

Ashland: Victoria, I still think that there’s a chance that we can keep all this under wraps. But what’s really pressing on me right now is what’s going on between the two of us. I don’t want to pressure you right now to follow through with this wedding. You don’t need to make that choice, not at this moment.

Victoria: Don’t tell me how I should react right now. I shouldn’t have been put in this position in the first place.

Billy: You’ll be happy to know that she’ll be meeting me in tuscany for the big wedding. It’s unfortunate you won’t have a date for the big shindig. Of course, you’d have to be invited by victoria in the first place.

Adam: Well, I hate to burst your bubble, but I actually will be at the wedding. Despite all odds, victoria decided to roll the dice and add me to the guest list. So I look forward to toasting to her good fortune.

Billy: You think victoria marrying ashland is good fortune?

Adam: Absolutely, I do. She finally found a man worthy of her.

Victoria: Okay. Remember, this had to be done very quickly, which is why we had the special seamstress flown in and put up in this suite to oversee the rush job. We still have a few minor adjustments.

Chloe: Okay, enough explaining. Just show it to me.

Sally: Well, that just means that I have to get a little more creative.

Chloe: Hold it right there. The last thing newman media needs is you pulling some over-the-top stunt.

Sally: Me, over the top?

Chloe: Okay. You know, I think I have a safer idea. What if I call victoria and i tell her that lauren wants to meet her here to have a fitting for the dress with the seamstress?

Sally: You’d be willing to risk lying to victoria?

Chloe: Well, it wouldn’t necessarily be lying if I played the call right. I’ll just say something like, “i spoke with lauren earlier” — which, by the way, is not a lie — and wondering if she would meet me later and we could discuss her wedding dress for our site. I mean, that’s also not a lie. Look, I know that it is a long shot, but well worth it if we can victoria to even just take a look.

Sally: And the minute she sees it, she will know it’s the one.

Chloe: But if victoria wears this dress on her double-mogul wedding day, it will put newman media’s fashion platform firmly on the map and one step closer to my vision of turning it into a full-fledged fashion house.

Adam: Victoria already left, huh? Then why are you hinting that you have some insider info about pre-wedding jitters? She didn’t go all the way there not to get married, billy. What’s this, is this just more wishful thinking?

Adam: Oh, I just wanted to share my concern about another wedding — victoria’S. Billy might be planning to interfere, and i just thought that you should know.

Victor: Boy, oh, boy, oh, boY. I just had a feeling billy boy would not let this go. Hates to see victoria happy with another man.

Adam: Yeah, I definitely got the sense that he was up to something.

Tessa: Yeah, you know, i think it did. She seemed to really hear what i was saying, and she even agreed to put the baby discussion on the back burner until we came back from tuscany, so…

Sharon: I’m so glad you two are going to the wedding. It couldn’t have come at a better time. The time away will be a good break, it’ll be a much-needed vacation, and it’s exactly what you both need right now.

Chloe: I’m just afraid that you’re taking this too far. I mean, do you really think that you can do this? I mean, fly all the way to italy on the chance that victoria will even look at your dress, much less agree to wear it at the last minute? Feels like a bit of a stretch.

Sally: Do you remember how the sight of my dress hit you the moment that you saw it? You immediately knew that it was better than the one that victoria’s currently saddled with? I have no doubt that she will feel the exact same way.

Chloe: I’m not so sure about that, especially considering you are the source. Thanks to your machinations against her niece, you already have one big strike against you.

Victoria: Look, ashland, i know you’re a man who gets anything and everything that he wants. And honestly, I think that’s part of the reason I fell in love with you, because I’m exactly the same way.

Ashland: I so hope that that love can endure what we’re going through right now.

Victoria: I just want you to know that, despite learning what I did about your past, I still love you.

Ashland: And I realize i should have been more forthcoming with you right from the start. Instead of telling you half of the truth of how I became ashland locke, I just should’ve laid it all out.

Victoria: I sort of understand why you didn’T. But I want you to understand something about me. I hate lies. I grew up with a father who kept things from his family whenever it suited him. And I lived with billy and his gambling and his lies for many years.

Ashland: And that’s the exact reason why I feel so deeply regretful about what I’ve done. That I’ve created another cloud of dishonesty in your world. You know, aside from you and nick, I’ve never told another living soul about the decision i made the night of that crash. And there’s only two people that know this other thing that i need to reveal to you. See, there’s been this wall around me ever since my damaged childhood that I couldn’t let anybody through in any way, and I have tried to lower that wall for you, but it doesn’t come naturally or easily. I know I’ve made some huge mistakes and I want to set those right. I want more than anything to make this work. I need this to work. And I will do everything I can to make that happen, and I will do everything I can to prove to you that there will be no more lies — ever.

Victoria: It’s more that you’ve withheld the information.

Ashland: That won’t happen again. But there is one more thing i need to tell you.

Sally: You see, the wedding dress is ready, and it’s spectacular. Unfortunately, the bride took off a little too early to see it.

Adam: Mm-hmm. So you want to fly halfway around the world to present a last-minute alternative dress to my very picky, stubborn, and highly opinionated sister.

Sally: Well, just so you know, I am very picky, stubborn, and highly opinionated myself, and I’m really good at what i do.

Adam: [ Sighs ] I know. I know, I’ve seen some of your work on the dress. But if I go along with this little student of yours, still want to keep things strictly professional between us.

Abby: Well, she didn’t seem to be too concerned since he’s active and alert and he’s eating a little bit, even if it’s not as much as I’d like.

Abby: This whole baby thing is a constant learning curve, isn’t it?

Devon: Yeah.

Abby: [ Chuckles ]

Devon: Absolutely.

Mariah: Having a baby and starting a family with you — that’s not me avoiding what happened to me. That’S… that’s my way of getting through it all.

Tessa: How do you figure?

Mariah: [ Sighs ] Okay. I-I’m not escaping. I’m saving myself. I have been on my own my entire life, and I have not just survived, but I have thrived. And you’ve done the same, right?

Tessa: Yeah, but I’m not seeing the connection to having a family.

Mariah: [ Sighs ] Do you remember when abby asked me to the be the surrogate and i just thought, “sure, I’ll — I’ll do this for my friend, and then I’ll go back to my life”? Well, I couldn’T.

Tessa: Because you were kidnapped.

Mariah: No. No. Because bringing bowie into this world — it changed me. I realized how much love I have to give to a child, and that’s what this is all about. It’s about the love and the love that I want to pour into our child.

Tessa: But I am not ready for that.

Mariah: How do you know?

Tessa: [ Sighs ]

Mariah: Seriously. I mean, what — what first-time parents are ever really ready?

Tessa: Look, I want — I-I need to be in the right mind-set, and more than anything, I need you to find your balance again.

Mariah: You think I’m unbalanced?

Tessa: I just think it’s wrong to bring a brand-new life into the world to fill a hole in your heart. It’s not fair [Sighs] To saddle a child with the chore of healing a wound.

[ Voice breaking ] It’s not fair to push me for something that i am not ready for. Because then I will lose my balance, and we will both be a mess.

[ Door opens ]

Mariah: Hey.

Tessa: Hey. How’s it going?

Mariah: It’s good.

Tessa: So I saw sharon and rey earlier. They told me you were on your way to see abby.

Mariah: Please don’t tell me the both of you are keeping tabs on me now.

Tessa: Now, now, it was an innocent run-in, I promise. I mean, I was surprised that you didn’t tell me you were on your way to the chancellor house earlier.

Mariah: It was a spur-of-the-moment decision.

Tessa: Well, how’d it go?

Mariah: I had everything planned out in my head, exactly how it was supposed to go, and when I got there, everything changed. Bowie was sick, and abby and devon say that it’s just a cold, and even if it is, I mean, he’s only a month old. That can’t be good, and i just — I couldn’t help but worry.

Tessa: Well, I’m sure that abby is doing everything possible to take of him.

Mariah: I know. She called the pediatrician, and she said that everything was gonna be fine.

Tessa: Oh, well, then I’m sure that it will be.

Mariah: But I can’t possibly leave the country without knowing for sure. Abby and bowie aren’t gonna be at the wedding. I would go crazy wondering if he’s okay or not.

Tessa: Mariah, maybe you should take a step back and let abby deal with this. I mean, you know that she’s gonna handle this with the utmost love and care. I mean, the baby is in amazing hands. You don’t have to worry about him.

Mariah: Tessa, I can’t just stop caring about the baby because we don’t live with him anymore.

Mariah: I can’t just snap my fingers and turn off my feelings. I love bowie, and if he’s sick… this is why having a baby of our own was supposed to help. It was supposed to be someone new I could put my love into and care about and…you just shut down that idea.

Tessa: I didn’t shut down the idea of having a baby. I just thought we should talk about it a little bit more. And I thought we had agreed to table this discussion until we got back from the trip.

Mariah: I think I’ve changed my mind about that.

Tessa: Okay, so you want to talk about it now?

Mariah: No, no. I… about the trip. I’m not going to italy. I have to be here in case bowie needs anything.

Victoria: I’m just gonna assume that this has something to do with that lawyer who came looking for you, jesse gaines.

Ashland: That’s right. I told you how I took over my friend’s life and identity after his fatal crash, and now it’s time I told you about how I made my fortune. And I’m going to tell you everything, but it has been a long day and I imagine you must be really hungry, so why don’t we just shelve this for now and we’ll grab a little bit to eat, okay? And you’re probably gonna want a glass of wine. Or two.

Adam: I need you to find out everything you can about the search chanccomm is conducting for a jesse gaines.

Gaines. Got iT.

Adam: Whatever it takes, my father and I are counting on you to make sure we stay one step ahead of billy abbott.

Yes, sir.

Billy: Okay, marty, what do you got? ‘Cause i find it very hard to believe that there is no record of camilla rhodes’ will or her banking records.

Marty: We couldn’t turn them up.

Billy: Is it possible that ashland made them disappear permanently?

Marty: I can’t be sure. But my people may have hit pay-dirt on another angle of our locke investigation.

Billy: Jesse gaines?

Marty: Yeah. We finally got a bead on him.

Billy: Where is he? I bet he’s got all the answers I’ve been looking for on ashland locke.

Billy: So you’re back. I assume you got my message.

Nick: [ Sighs ] What do you want?

Billy: I think you know. How was your trip to jersey? You know, you were acting all nonchalant when we were talking about this before, but apparently you’re just as interested in ashland’s past as I am.

Nick: Not discussing this with you.

Billy: And why not? The wedding is coming up fast, and your sister has no idea who she’s about to marry. We want the same thing, nick.

Nick: Actually, we don’T. See, you’re obsessed with doing damage to victoria’s relationship, at any cost, any way you can.

Billy: I want the truth. So what did you find out in jersey? Are you following ashland’s money? Because that’s where I’ve been thinking, and I have a theory on that.

Nick: Let it go.

Billy: Well, whatever you found out, obviously it wasn’t good.

Ashland: I got a room here to give you some space to process whatever it is that you’re feeling.

Victoria: I appreciate that.

Ashland: I’m really glad you came. And whatever it is that you want to say, I’m ready to hear it. And as far as your brother goes, I hope you don’t put the blame on him for pursuing this. His motive was just to protect his sister, which I find admirable. Familial love and loyalty is something I never knew growing up, and I think that it is worth holding on to.

Victoria: I didn’t come here to discuss nicholas with you. This is about us. It’s about who we are. At least who I thought we were.

Devon: Okay. There you go.

Amanda: Are you bluffing?

Devon: I don’t know. Am I bluffing?

Amanda: Why don’t we find out? I call and raise.

Devon: Oh. Okay.

[ Chuckles ]

Amanda: Thank you for tonight, by the way. It’s the perfect way to wind down after being in the er with naya.

Devon: I’m just glad the issue was something the doctors could handle easily.

Amanda: Yeah, they said that we’re gonna have to expect these kinds of incidences with her illness, but she’s feeling a lot better now, which is a huge relief.

Devon: Oh, yeah, of course.

Amanda: So, you gonna call my bet or what?

Devon: That’s a good question. Should I call your bet?

Amanda: If you have a winning hand, why not?

Devon: I mean, if that’s the case, I will — what have you got there? I will call and I’ll raise you.

Amanda: [ Laughs ]

Devon: Yeah.

Amanda: Oh, I got you now.

Devon: Well, how you have me?

Amanda: Mm, because you have a tell. See, when you were bluffing, you smirk and your eyes smolder.

Devon: They smolder?

Amanda: [ Laughing ] Yes.

Devon: Maybe that’s just how I look at you. You ever think about that?

Devon: Yeah? It’s abby. One second. Hey.

Abby: Hi. Well, I was just calling to check on amanda’s mom. Is she okay?

Devon: Oh, yeah, she’s actually doing much better. Thank you for asking. Amanda’s here with me right now.

[ Dominic fussing ] Uh-oh. Who’s not having a good time in the background over there?

Abby: Well, dominic’s been pretty fussy tonight, and I feel like I’ve tried everything. Look, I am so sorry for calling you out of the blue and at this hour, but the last time he was like this, you were the only one that could settle him down. Oh, my god, you said you were with amanda. I am so sorry. Please, just forget that i called.

Devon: Abby, please, no, don’t be sorry at all. It’s okay.

Amanda: Go. She needs your help. Go work your magic with the baby.

Devon: Hey, abby, I will actually be over there right away, okay?

Sally: Yeah, the hemline needs to come up an inch and a half. No, no, an inch and three-quarters. Yeah, I know we’re doing this at supersonic speed, but I will pay whatever it costs because we have to get this dress done before the bride flies out of town in the next few days. Okay, thank you.

Adam: I gather that call was about your plan to get victoria to wear the wedding dress you designed.

Sally: Okay, before you say anything else, let me remind you why this benefits newman media. Sally: Yes, I’m glad you recognize that.

Ashland: I can only imagine how you must be feeling about learning of the circumstances of how I changed my identity.

Victoria: Look, the way that your friend was — it was horrible, but I didn’t come here to judge you for a decision that you made when you were a desperate kid. I can see how it still haunts you.

Victoria: I understand that. I really do, but what I don’t get is the choices that you’ve made since we’ve been together. I mean, I’ve tried to see it from your perspective and make sense of it. Ashland: That’s all true.

Victoria: You see, the problem is being lied to is just unsettlingly familiar to me. I lived with a habitual gambler for many years. I never knew when he was gonna relapse. You know, billy is incredibly charming and fun, but he was a master at lying to my face. One of the reasons I fell in love with you is because you were nothing like that. Or at least, I thought you weren’T. But now it turns out that you are just as unpredictable as billy was.

Ashland: Billy’s search for the truth about me has resurrected these old feelings of doubt and uncertainty in you.

Victoria: It’s about the lies, ashland. I can’t live through that again. I won’T.

Nick: See, I’m tired of you pretending like we’re co-conspirators in this plan to bring ashland down. The only thing I care about is protecting my sister and this family.

Billy: Great, we’re on the same page. That’s all I want, too.

Nick: No, it’s not. See, you want to make a point. You want everyone to pat you on the back and say, “look how smart billy is,” then you’ll get some satisfaction out of knowing that you’re not the only person in this world who let victoria down. Isn’t that the plan here?

Billy: No, it’s not. Not even close. And honestly, you sound a lot like your dad. Is that the direction you want to go, nick? I’m a little surprised and, frankly, hurt that you would think that way, but fine. This is the last time we will speak about this. I’ll see you in tuscany. Unless there’s not going to be a wedding?

Nick: Sorry to disappoint you, but it is still happening.

Billy: Are you going?

Nick: I’m done talking about this with you. I’m flying to milan in the morning to watch my daughter get married.

Amanda: Hey, you.

Phyllis: Hello. Well, if it isn’t the former occupant of room 601 that left so she could move in with her boyfriend. Hmm, can I help you, miss?

Amanda: Um, well, I did come here looking for my friend, but I don’t know, she seems to have gone missing.

Phyllis: Mm. Well, maybe she’s missing because you didn’t tell your friend that you were leaving. She couldn’t even throw you, you know, like, a goodbye party or something like that. Some friend you are.

Phyllis: I’m so excited you moved in with devon! Finally you two acknowledged what the rest of the world could see.

Amanda: Wait, what are you saying, that you knew before we did?

Phyllis: Well, yeah. There’s such a thing as chemistry. But, you know, what I love is that you two really, really respect each other and you’re really good to each other. It’s lovely.

Amanda: Thank you. And I feel so lucky and so blessed to be with such a great guy, you know, just a genuinely good man who makes me feel loved and, gosh, he’s been my rock. He’s been there for me through all the ups and downs with my family.

Phyllis: Yeah. He’s a gem.

Amanda: He is.

Phyllis: Are you meeting him for dinner or cocktails or something?

Amanda: Well, we did have a celebratory dinner planned, but then there was an emergency with my mom, so…

Phyllis: Oh, is she okay?

Amanda: Yeah, no, she’s fine. And then abby called, and she needed devon to come over and help her with the baby. So I had some free time on my hands, and I wanted to see if you wanted to hang out before you just jet off to italy for not one, but two amazing weddings.

Phyllis: Two weddings, i know! I know! Well, I don’t have much to do, except, you know, sit back and look fabulous for the weddings, so come on.

Amanda: Yeah.

Phyllis: Let’s have a cocktail.

Phyllis: Yeah, I really want to catch up with everything.

Phyllis: Yeah. How is he handling this whole abby’s baby thing?

Devon: Oh. I don’t know what’s wrong with you, little man. We’re gonna find out, though, okay?

[ Dominic crying ] It’s okay.

Abby: Oh, gosh.

Devon: Think I lost my magic touch.

Abby: Well, at first, i thought it was just a bout of colic, so I tried putting him on his tummy and rubbing his back, but that didn’t seem to work. And then this cry, it just sounds so different. I mean, does he sound sniffly to you?

Devon: Yeah, he does just a little bit, and he feels warm, too.

Abby: Right? But I tried taking his temperature. I took it like 100 times, and it keeps coming back normal. I was gonna call the pediatrician, but I don’t really have anything to tell her.

[ Sighs ] I just — I feel so helpless. I just wish there was something I could do to make him feel better.

Devon: I know. I hate seeing him like this, too. It’s okay.

Abby: If we both think that he sounds sniffly and congested, I mean, do you think we should call dr. Bradley just in case?

Devon: Yeah, we should probably do it and be safe. It’s okay. Mommy’s calling. It’s okay.

Abby: [ Sighs ]

Devon: What’d she say?

Abby: Well, I feel better after checking in with the doctor, but she said we should try saline drops as the first step.

Devon: Okay, that’s easy. I can go out and get some.

Abby: Normally I would take you up on that, but, gosh, i haven’t seen him this calm and comfortable in hours. I mean, do you think maybe you could watch him and I could go get the drops?

Devon: Yeah, absolutely.

Abby: You sure?

Devon: Of course.

Abby: Okay. Thank you so much. Bye, baby. I love you. Be right back.

Devon: You got it.

Abby: Thank you.

Devon: Absolutely.

Abby: Okay.

Devon: She’ll be right back, okay? Oh. Here we go. There we go. I’m sorry you don’t feel good, buddy. Gonna take care of you, though, alright? Mommy just went out to get you something to make you feel better. Okay? ‘Cause we love you. You have so many people that love you. You have a whole army of family, man. Amanda: The baby has had a profound impact on devon. You know, he talks about bringing dominic into the world and holding him in his arms, looking down at him, and his eyes opened for the first time. It’s — it’s truly a very deep connection.

[ Cellphone rings ] Oh, it’s devon. Just let me just see if everything’s okay. Hello.

Devon: I just wanted to update you on dominic. He was just a little congested, and abby just ran out to get some drops for him, so I wanted to let you know I’m probably gonna be here for a while.

Amanda: Oh, okay. Yeah, I’m glad that you went over there to help abby. Okay, I will see you soon. I love you.

Devon: I love you, too. Bye.

Amanda: Bye.

Phyllis: Is everything okay?

Amanda: Yeah. Dominic’s a little congested, and the last time he was fussy, devon was the only one who could calm him down, so it seems like he went over and worked his magic again.

Phyllis: Hmm. That’s great.

Amanda: Yeah.

Phyllis: You know that special bond you were talking about?

Amanda: Mm-hmm.

Phyllis: I want to tell you something. Jack delivered summer. Did you know that?

Amanda: Really?

Phyllis: Yeah. And even though there’s no biological tie between the two of them, they have a very, very special connection.

Amanda: [ Chuckles ] Do you think that jack’s closeness with summer caused conflict between you and nick?

Phyllis: Oh, there were extenuating circumstances.

Amanda: Because I feel like you are trying to warn me, you know, that this whole thing can cause problems for me and devon.

Phyllis: Wow, you feel that way? Really, I’m not trying to do that at all.

Amanda: [ Scoffs ] Well, I want you to know that i support devon being as big a part of dominic’s life as possible, whatever that may look like. I don’t see it as competition. Not at all. No, I see it as something that has enriched devon’s life and, by extension, mine.

Phyllis: That’s great. Truly, that’s great.

Amanda: Well, back to you and jack.

Phyllis: Oh, okay.

Amanda: [ Chuckles ] I mean, I think it’s really good that you guys are still close, right?

Phyllis: Oh, it’s great. Oh, I love jack. We’ve gone through so much. We’ll always be good friends.

Amanda: And you guys were married before?

Phyllis: Yeah, yeah.

Amanda: What happened?

Phyllis: Oh, my goodness. Really?

Amanda: Yeah.

Phyllis: Well, it’s complicated. I certainly don’t want to get into it in my hotel lobby.

Amanda: [ Sighs ] Yeah. Okay. Well, maybe we should just go somewhere else and talk about it. Actually, because when you say it’s complicated, I have a feeling that that is a massive understatement.

Adam: Are you planning on finding a way of getting the dress in front of victoria anonymously? Because she’s not gonna wear it, love it or hate it, if she knows it’s from you.

Sally: Wow, don’t sugarcoat it.

Adam: I’m not a beat-around-the-bush kind of guy.

Sally: Well, I’m hoping victoria will appreciate the design and craftsmanship of the gown and maybe respect my chutzpah.

Adam: You clearly don’t know my sister at all.

Sally: You may be the member of the family with the black-sheep rep, but you do not get to be ceo of newman enterprises without occasionally going bare knuckle to get what you want, so I’m hoping that maybe victoria will see a little bit of herself in me and admire the effort it took to get her the perfect dress.

Adam: Or you might just piss her off.

Sally: Yeah, that risk is there, but I’m not gonna let it stop me. Bull in a china shop is sometimes the way to go, damn the consequences. Besides, the enemy of your enemy can be your friend.

Adam: What are you getting at?

Sally: Well, as I understand it, there’s no love lost between victoria and phyllis, so it might be a bonus that phyllis despises mE.

Adam: Maybe. But summer’s also nick’s daughter, and victoria’s close to both of them, so she’s not gonna appreciate what you did to her niece.

Sally: Summer got her dream job and she’s marrying her dream guy, like, tomorrow, so I’ve hurt exactly no one and my work speaks for itself. What do you think? Tell me the cold, hard truth.

Victoria: I asked you point blank if there was anything else that I needed to know, and you looked me dead in the eye and you swore to me that there wasn’T. You were prepared to keep something so monumental from me and to let me walk into this marriage completely blind, and for that reason, I have to ask myself, “is there something else, something that you’re keeping from me that you’re not gonna admit to me until you’re backed into a corner again and forced to be honest?”

Ashland: I get how you feel that way, and I hate that you see the similarities between me and the life you lived with an addict. And I want to try and fix that. Is there anything that would?

Victoria: Getting to the truth. Why don’t we start there? Anything and everything that pertains to us, our life together, our marriage, our company going forward.

Ashland: Absolutely.

Victoria: Alright, why don’t we start with the real reason that jesse gaines is in genoa city.

Ashland: It’s time that i told you all about him.

Ashland: I have no idea how you are going to react, but i will tell you the whole, unvarnished truth about jesse gaines. But I just want to ask you one thing before I do — that we don’t do it here. Can we fly to tuscany tonight? Because my jet is ready, and it’s available to take off whenever we want. The flight will give us some time alone and away from genoa city, because despite whatever you’ve learned about me so far, I truly want to believe that you haven’t stopped loving me.

Victoria: Ashland. How could I stop loving you? You’ve gotten inside of my heart, and that’s just not something that you get rid of so easily.

Ashland: Well, thank god. You don’t know how happy I am to hear you say that.

Victoria: Maybe you’re right. Maybe this flight to italy would be a good idea. We can get away from my family for a while and away from these people that keep trying to interfere in our lives, and maybe it would help us be able to figure some things out.

Ashland: I was hoping and praying that you would say that.

Phyllis: Hey, I am so excited for summer. I can’t wait to see her.

Amanda: Oh, I know. I’m so happy for summer and kyle.

Phyllis: Yeah.

Amanda: And you and nick.

Phyllis: Yeah.

Billy: Well, hello, ladies.

Phyllis: Hey, billy.

Amanda: Hello, there.

Billy: How are you? Everybody good? You — you just missed nick.

Phyllis: Oh. Okay, I can tell. You spoke to him, didn’t you?

Billy: I did. He was pretty fired up about some wedding issues.

Amanda: Summer and kyle’s wedding?

Billy: No, the other wedding.

Phyllis: Don’t you have to meet with lily somewhere?

Billy: No. In fact, lily is in california, handling a little minor crisis with mattie, so i am free at the moment.

Phyllis: Great. I guess that’s so much for our intimate conversation, right?

Amanda: Well, maybe we can all have a drink, as long as billy agrees to behave and not push anyone’s buttons.

Phyllis: Oh, he’s not gonna do that.

Billy: I can totally do that. I will be a perfect social companion. You know what? Drinks are on me.

Amanda: Oh.

Phyllis: Well, that’s good.

[ Cellphone rings ] My front desk manager is calling. I have to get this. Excuse me.

Billy: [ Chuckles ] Okay. Well, I haven’t seen you in a while. Is everything good?

Amanda: Yeah, you know, everything’s been great. I’m preparing for my grandfather’s trial. I know that you’ve been following that.

Billy: Yeah, yeah, I’m sure that was difficult to hear the truth about him.

Amanda: Hasn’t been easy. But, you know, I think I’m coming through the other end.

Billy: Good.

Amanda: But on a brighter note, I’m gonna be opening my own legal practice with my sister.

Billy: What?

Amanda: Yes.

Billy: That’s fantastic. Congratulations.

Amanda: Thank you.

Billy: Wow. A lot has happened since you left chanccomm.

Amanda: It certainly has.

Billy: Well, I’m very happy for you.

Amanda: Thanks. I’m glad that things are going well for you, too, billy.

Billy: Yeah. Yeah, they are. Except for one story that we’re working on. We’re following the money — 20-year-old that came into a huge influx of money, possibly from an inheritance from someone that he barely knew. I know that you are not a chanccomm lawyer anymore, but i would love to get your take on it.

Nick: I don’t suppose you were heading up to phyllis’ suite looking for me, were you?

Victoria: I can assure you that you are the last person that I want to see right now.

Nick: Look, can we just go somewhere and sit down and talk?

Victoria: I’ve said everything that there is to say to you, nicholas. You ignored my wishes. You went behind my back. You had ashland investigated. You totally betrayed my trust.

Nick: Vick, come on.

Victoria: You know, this is the first man in a long time that I have felt this kind of connection with. We’re in love. We accomplished the merger of a lifetime together. I asked you to just leave it alone. Just let me be happy. You couldn’t do that?

Devon: Really well.

Devon: What’s it say?

Abby: Says one to two. Okay. There we go. It’s not gonna hurt at all.

[ Chuckles ] Hi.

Adam: I’ll admit, it’s spectacular. I mean, I only saw the early stages of this. Did chloe work with you on this?

Sally: No. Chloe handles everything on the business side. That’s exactly what she did when she worked with chelsea, too. That is 100% my design, my passion. That is what I do, even if it’s technically not my title right now. There were some issues with the craftsmanship, but I’m hoping that the dress will be ready to show victoria by tomorrow afternoon.

Adam: And what if it’s not? What are you gonna do? You gonna fly to tuscany and show up at a destination wedding that you weren’t invited to?

Sally: I’m gonna do whatever it takes.

Adam: Just saying, might be some flaws with your plan.

Ashland: Victoria has decided to fly with me tonight to tuscany.

Victoria: I have to finish some things at the office, then I’m gonna run home and pack.

Ashland: Okay. I’ll call the pilot and finalize things, and I’ll meet you back at the house.

Victoria: As far as my brother attending the wedding goes, my decision still stands. I don’t want him there. He’s not welcome.

Nick: How the hell did you pull this off?

Billy: I’m wondering exactly how this guy could’ve pulled off what he did.

Amanda: Well, maybe he did form a connection with someone that left him an inheritance. I mean, it happens. Rarely, but it does.

Billy: Yeah, the rarely is what’s bugging me. What are the odds of that?

Amanda: It’s a long shot.

Billy: Okay. Let me ask you this, then, how difficult is it to change a will after someone’s already passed away? Didn’t you work on something like that when you first came to town?

Amanda: Yeah, that was a very unfortunate situation. But if you’re asking me how difficult it is to break the law? The person in the best position to do that would be the attorney who drew up the will in the first place. But they would risk disbarment and possible jail time. Another way to do it is if someone came forward with a document claiming that the deceased changed their mind.

Phyllis: What are the two of you talking about so intently?

Abby: I promise I’m gonna perfect this whole parenting thing. I won’t call you every time something seems off.

Devon: Oh, get out of here. You better never stop calling me. I’ll take any excuse to come see him.

Abby: Well, you know you’re welcome here any time.

Devon: Appreciate that.

Abby: Speaking of, I haven’t really spoken to mariah recently. We’ve just exchanged some texts about scheduling tessa dropping off milk for the baby. Have you talked to her?

Devon: Yeah, I have, and she’s still giving me signs to not push too hard.

Abby: Yeah. Well, that’s not the way i wanted things, but I guess that’s just what I have to accept for now.

Devon: Exactly. I think it’s just for now. We just need to stay prepared to jump in and help whenever mariah’s ready.

Abby: I have to admit that waiting is not easy. And I’ve been doing a lot of that recently.

Devon: You have. Any word from chance at all?

Abby: No. But I did start doing the video journal again.

Devon: That’s good.

Abby: I just — I feel so bad that he’s missing the first weeks of dominic’s life.

Devon: Well, just remember that he’s gonna have a lifetime of memories to make with him when he gets back.

Abby: Yeah.

Devon: Right?

Abby: You’re right, yeah.

[ Dominic crying ]

Devon: Uh-oh. No, no, no, I got it, I got it. You relax. What’s going on? You awake? Oh.

Billy: Amanda and I were just catching up.

Phyllis: Amanda and I were just catching up. Are you leaving soon?

Billy: Oh, phyllis, I miss that velvet touch.

Phyllis: Mm.

Billy: She has a soft spot for me.

Phyllis: Well, you’re easier for me to like when you’re not around.

Billy: Okay, alright. You don’t have to tell billy abbott to leave three times. Have a good evening.

Amanda: You, too. I get the feeling that you and billy were pretty intense when you were together, huh?

Phyllis: Yeah, intense. For sure. Not always in a good way. We did really crazy things together and apart. I’ll always regret how we destroyed jack.

Amanda: Is this the part where you tell me what happened between you and jack?

Phyllis: [ Scoffs ] So much happened between me and jack through the years. So much. A lot of outside influences, that’s for sure. There are those people that you hold close to your heart, and jack is one of them.

Nick: I mean, how did you get my sister to just overlook everything you told her and move forward with this wedding?

Ashland: Victoria is more open-minded about the events in my past than you are. She’s much more like her father.

Nick: Oh, okay. And how’s that exactly?

Ashland: Well, it’s just that they both realize the world is not black and white. Mistakes are made and can be forgiven.

Nick: You think I haven’t made any mistakes or forgiven anyone?

Ashland: You obviously hoped that she wouldn’t forgive me.

Nick: I wanted my sister to know exactly who she’s dealing with. And now she does.

Ashland: Hey. We’re not quite finished. With less moderate-to-severe eczema why hide your skin

Abby: [ Sighs ]

Sally: Spectacular — that is how you described the dress. Do you really think victoria’s not gonna want to wear it whenever she sees it?

Adam: I think that you’re playing with fire.

Sally: And you like that about me.

Adam: I — I didn’t say that.

Sally: Mm, yeah, you did, actually. Look, this is a risk that makes a career, okay? Nobody is gonna hand it to me, so I’m just gonna take the advice of my namesake and carpe the damn diem. I’m gonna seize the day, give victoria the wedding dress of her dreams, and create a huge buzz for newman media’s fashion platform in the process.

Adam: Look, I will give you this — when you set your mind to something, you commit.

Sally: You have no idea.

Ashland: What happened to “bobby defranco” the night of that car accident, the choice i made, was the most painful event of my life. What happened was tragic and overwhelming.

Nick: And character-defining.

Ashland: You know, you will never understand what I have carried inside of me since then and what it took to relive it with victoria earlier. So all I can do now is look forward, and I realize that i have no control over any of this, but if you have any decency or compassion in you, you will keep what you know to yourself.

Billy: Listen to me. We need to find out everything we can about the will of a woman named camilla rhodes. I want to know if there was something shady ashland locke pulled off after she died in order to get his hands on her money.

Ashland: Nate.

Nate: Hey. Good to see you. How is everything?

Ashland: Never better.

Nate: Really?

Ashland: You grabbing dinner?

Nate: Uh, elena got called in to memorial to, uh, help out on a case. So I thought I would stop by and grab her some dessert to surprise her. Until then, I’m on my own.

Ashland: Makes two of us.

Nate: Is everything okay? You seem a little off.

Ashland: Uh, I mentioned earlier some vexing issues that I’ve had. And I thought I’d handled them, and it turns out I was wrong. They’re still unresolved.

Nate: I don’t mean to pry, but, as your best man, i promised I would help out however I could. So I’m here if you need a friend.

Ashland: It’s been a while since I’ve had one of those. And I could definitely use one right now.

[ Footsteps approaching ]

Nikki: Victoria?

Victoria: Yes?

Nikki: What’s wrong?

Victoria: Nothing.

Nikki: Yes, there is.

Victoria: I was just thinking about all of the work that requires my attention before we — before we go to tuscany.

Nikki: You said “tuscany” instead of “the wedding.”

Victoria: Oh, mom, please don’t read into that.

Nikki: Well, I can’t help it. I mean, the last time you and i spoke, you said that you were wondering if there was more that ashland was keeping from you. And I know you were going to see him. Did he have answers for your questions?

Victoria: [ Sighs ] I just — I learned more about his past. And it, um — it just has me thinking.

Nikki: Well, you seem more upset now than you did before. Please just tell me what happened. I promise I won’t judge or criticize. Darling, I’m on your side.

Victoria: I finally know who ashland is. Who he really is.

Jack: Nick. Come on in. We were just talking about you.

Nick: Oh, should I be worried?

Phyllis: We were wondering what took you.

Nick: Yeah. It look longer than I expected.

Phyllis: Oh. Okay. So, uh, how was your trip?

Jack: I’ll tell you what. While you guys are talking about that, I’m gonna give my pilot a call. He can schedule a new flight plan now that we know that you’re here.

Phyllis: Okay. Okay. What happened?

Nick: The one thing I can tell you for sure is victoria is making a terrible mistake.

Mariah: Why would you talk to sharon about something that is so private and personal, like my emotional state or my desire to have a baby with you?

Tessa: Because she’s your mother. And we both love you more than anything.

Mariah: That should have stayed between us.

Tessa: Okay, you — you have every right to be upset. But I was confused and concerned, and I really needed someone to talk to.

Mariah: You should have talked to me.

Tessa: But I didn’t feel like I could.

Mariah: What do you mean? Why?

Tessa: Because I’ve tried. And you don’t want to hear what I have to say.

Ashland: Some details, um, about my past that I was hoping to keep private have recently come to light.

Nate: Mm. I get why that would be upsetting.

Ashland: When I was young and desperate, um, I made some choices that some people may not understand. And in one defining moment, uh, I saw the opportunity to make my life better, and I grabbed it. And since that time, I have worked tirelessly to become the man that I am. And I have tried to forget the person that I was before i became the ashland locke, as if one can truly forget one’s history.

Nate: So, what does this mean? Is the wedding still happening?

Victoria: Ashland didn’t just change his name and create a new identity for himself. He took the name of a friend who died when they were in a terrible car accident together.

Nikki: What?! Why would he do that?

Victoria: He saw a chance to save himself. He wanted to prevent his father from ever finding him again, just wanted to start over with a clean slate.

Nikki: Wow. Well, I guess now I understand why he wanted to keep that part of his life hidden. Did he explain why he kept this from you?

Victoria: He said that he was relieved that I finally knew the truth and, um, he regretted not telling me to begin with.

Nikki: Well, why didn’t he tell you sooner?

Victoria: Because, mom, this was a very painful part of his life. He didn’t want to speak of it anymore.

Nikki: Do you believe him?

Victoria: I saw the look in his eyes, and I heard it in his voice. I mean, it was — it was heartbreaking watching him relive that story.

Nikki: But you still think he should have told you before now.

Victoria: [ Sighs ] It’s just so disappointing that the only reason he revealed any of this to me is because, once again, he was backed into a corner.

Nikki: Ugh. Because of billy. I saw him earlier, and I told him to stay out of your relationship. Apparently, he’s incapable of that.

Victoria: [ Sighs ] Not billy. No, mom. It’s much worse. It was nicholas.

Phyllis: Bobby defranco? This guy’s real name is bobby defranco?

Nick: Yeah. He stole his dead best friend’s identity.

Phyllis: Wow. I would have never expected to hear something like this. And not in a million years would I assume that locke expected you to connect the dots.

Nick: Yeah, he said as much. I put together bits and pieces of information when I went out to toms river. My plan was to come back here and confront ashland, have him fill in the blanks. I just didn’t want to involve victoria until I knew exactly what I was dealing with.

Phyllis: Oh, well, it sounds like that’s not what happened, right?

Nick: Ashland shows up with victoria, and the two of them demand that she’s a part of the conversation.

Phyllis: Well, she must have gone out of her mind, hearing something so epic, right?

Nick: You know, she didn’t say much about that. But later on, when we were talking alone, she just went off on me.

Phyllis: What?

Nick: Yeah, she said i betrayed her confidence.

[ Breathes deeply ] Made it very clear to me that she’s done with me.

Phyllis: With you? Nick!

Nick: It’s what I get for doing the right thing.

Mariah: There is nothing that you can’t talk to me about. You know that, tessa.

Tessa: You’re right. I backed down because I didn’t want to disappoint you or upset you anymore. But I also… I also feel like you’re not really listening to me.

Mariah: But I do. I am.

Tessa: Okay. Um… well, what I’m hearing from you is that you want me to have a baby so that we can have a child of our own. And more than anything, I want to have a family with you… one day. But I told you, from my point of view, I don’t think this is the right time.

Mariah: Why not?

Tessa: For so many reasons.

Mariah: Okay. Like what?

Tessa: Uh, okay, well, let’s start with the practical ones. Our careers.

Mariah: Tessa, you can have a career and have a family.

Tessa: [ Sighs ] Okay. Well, then, uh, how about where we’re living…or not living? I mean, we don’t even know where we’re gonna be moving.

Mariah: There are so many places to choose from, and we — okay. Okay. I’m sorry. I hear it. I get it. I’m — I’m listening. I promise.

Tessa: [ Sighs ] Okay, um, look. I’m hesitant for some bigger reasons, as well. I know that we’ve discussed having a family in general. But I am not sure that I am ready to be pregnant or be a mom. And it would be a lie to say that I am. And I’m also worried that… this decision might be coming from a place of desperation.

Mariah: Ouch.

Tessa: Honey, you were kidnapped, left alone for weeks. And then there was the birth. And now you’re dealing with finding your place in dominic’s life.

Mariah: What are you trying to say?

Tessa: I think that the idea of having a baby might be an escape from all of that for you, something to distract from all the emotions that are going on inside of you. And I think that you should work through that first.

Mariah: I hear you. I do. I just completely disagree.

Nate: For what it’s worth, i consider myself a decent judge of character. And from what I know and seen of you, you seem like a decent guy.

Ashland: [ Chuckles ] Thank you. That means the world coming from you.

Nate: And if this event you’re alluding to happened decades ago, well, most people have ghosts of one kind or another in their past.

Ashland: I appreciate you giving me the benefit of the doubt. I hope that victoria can be convinced to do the same.

Phyllis: Siblings have squabbles, right? I mean, she’s just mad — victoria. She’s not gonna cut you out of her life.

Nick: Well, she cut me off the guest list.

Phyllis: What?

Nick: Yep. I’ve been officially disinvited from the wedding.

Phyllis: That’s ridicul– she’s just mad. She’s mad, you know? And she is shooting the well-intentioned messenger. That’s all. I mean, she’s shocked. I’m shocked. I don’t even like this guy, and I’m shocked. I mean, he really took the identity of a dying man? Really?

Nick: He said he had no chance to save his best friend’s life and he had to make a split-second decision, one that would allow him to get away from his abusive father forever.

Phyllis: Well, that is outrageous. I understand why he would do that. If it’s true, I understand. I mean, he has an abusive father. I know that one would probably want to erase their past.

Nick: Well, who knows what other secrets this guy has. He was willing to take this one to the grave, and the only reason he said the truth was ’cause I forced it out of him. My sister deserves better than this.

Phyllis: Hey, let’s table all the talk about ashland, whether he’s evil or not evil. Let’s just focus on your sister. You need — you got to make this right.

Nick: She doesn’t want me at the wedding.

Phyllis: No.

Nick: So I’m not going.

Phyllis: No, no. You’re going. You’re definitely going. Nick, you have to work this out with your sister. You have to, or you’ll regret it forever. You have to make this right now. Before it’s too late.

Victoria: When I found out that nicholas had flown to new jersey, I suspected that he took it upon himself to investigate ashland’s past. But when I asked phyllis about it, she lied and she said that i was projecting my own insecurities.

Nikki: Oh, well, that’s phyllis. What do you expect?

Victoria: I expect a modicum of — of respect. I’m tired of people running around behind my back, interfering, all under the guise of looking out for me.

Nikki: Well, darling, I do think that nicholas was looking out for, unlike billy, who just wants to undermine your relationship with ashland. Your brother just wants you to be happy.

Victoria: Do you know what makes me happy, mom? When people do as I ask. And I asked him explicitly not to interfere, but then he goes sneaking around without my authorization.

Nikki: Maybe he was hoping there wouldn’t be anything worth mentioning.

Victoria: It wasn’t his place. I spoke to him in private, in confidence. I asked him not to act on anything that I said to him, and he blatantly disregarded my wishes. And then on top of that, when he got the information that he did, he went to ashland first and not me.

Nikki: Well, honey, perhaps he thought that ashland would be able to explain.

Victoria: It doesn’t matter. I’m — I’m his sister. There’s just no excuse.

Nikki: I am so sorry this happened.

Victoria: Well, I am so sorry, too. But I am not gonna give nick a pass just for the sake of peace. In fact, I told him not to bother coming to the wedding.

Nikki: What?! Well, I hope, once you have some time to think that over, you will reconsider.

Victoria: I won’T.

Nikki: Victoria, you need to really think about this because the way you feel now is not gonna be the same as how you feel in a week or a month or even a year. You are going to wish that he was by your side. That is, if there is still going to be a wedding.

Victoria: Did I say that it was off?

Nikki: No, but you have carried on a lot about nicholas, and I haven’t heard one word about how you feel about ashland now. What does this mean for the two of you? Plaque psoriasis, the burning, itching. The pain.

Mariah: Having a baby and starting a family with you — that’s not me avoiding what happened to me. That’S… that’s my way of getting through it all.

Tessa: How do you figure?

Mariah: [ Sighs ] Okay. I-I’m not escaping. I’m saving myself. I have been on my own my entire life, and I have not just survived, but I have thrived. And you’ve done the same, right?

Tessa: Yeah, but I’m not seeing the connection to having a family.

Mariah: [ Sighs ] Do you remember when abby asked me to the be the surrogate and i just thought, “sure, I’ll — I’ll do this for my friend, and then I’ll go back to my life”? Well, I couldn’T.

Tessa: Because you were kidnapped.

Mariah: No. No. Because bringing bowie into this world — it changed me. I realized how much love I have to give to a child, and that’s what this is all about. It’s about the love and the love that I want to pour into our child.

Tessa: But I am not ready for that.

Mariah: How do you know?

Tessa: [ Sighs ]

Mariah: Seriously. I mean, what — what first-time parents are ever really ready?

Tessa: Look, I want — I-I need to be in the right mind-set, and more than anything, I need you to find your balance again.

Mariah: You think I’m unbalanced?

Tessa: I just think it’s wrong to bring a brand-new life into the world to fill a hole in your heart. It’s not fair [Sighs] To saddle a child with the chore of healing a wound.

[ Voice breaking ] It’s not fair to push me for something that i am not ready for. Because then I will lose my balance, and we will both be a mess.

Mariah: So…that’s it? End of discussion?

Ashland: I wasn’t expecting to fall in love. I mean, it was the last thing on my mind after my ex had, uh, run roughshod over my heart. Victoria changed all that when she walked into my life… brought me happiness like I’ve never known, gave me a reason to live. And despite my diagnosis, the idea of planning a future with her — it’s everything to me. And the thought that my resurrected past would threaten that…

Nate: So, what happens now?

Ashland: I wish I knew.

[ Sighs ] Intellectually, my mind is telling me to wait this out, you know, give her some time. But my heart is telling me something different.

Nate: Maybe you need to follow your heart.

Victoria: I can’t turn my emotions on and off.

[ Sighs ] I still love ashland.

Nikki: Of course you do. And I hope you know that I’m not trying to tell you what to do.

Victoria: I know that you’re not, and I appreciate your support. But that’s all I care to say about my relationship for the moment. However I decide to handle the situation, ashland will be the first to know.

Nick: Of course I want to repair things with vick, but i just cannot reach out to her.

Phyllis: Don’t you want to make things right?

Nick: Yes, but anything I say right now is just gonna add fuel to the anger. Honestly, it will do us both some good to just stay away from each other and let things calm down.

Phyllis: Okay. The clock is ticking, you know.

Nick: Yeah. I’m gonna figure it all out after summer’s wedding. Right now I just need to focus on shaking off this mood and looking forward to our trip because our little girl’s getting married, and I don’t want any part of this to cast a shadow on her big day.

Phyllis: Ah. I don’t, either. She deserves all the joy in the world.

Nick: So I cannot wait to get on that jet and go to milan with you.

Jack: Hope I’m not interrupting.

Phyllis: No, not at all. We were just talking about how excited we are to get on the jabot jet and start the festivities.

Jack: Unfortunately, that is not gonna happen. (Dad) you know, if we take that wrapper back to the store,

Tessa: Okay, I — I’ve never shut down all conversations with you about having a baby. I would never do that.

Mariah: Well, it kind of seems that way.

Tessa: I’m sorry. I… I want to hear how you’re feeling. I really do. And I want help you in any way that I can. But [Sighs]…Having honest conversations like this, as difficult as it is, I think it’s a step in the right direction. So let’s keep the lines of communication open?

Mariah: Yeah. I want to do that, too.

Tessa: Good. Hey, come here. ‘Cause together I know that we can handle anything that life throws our way, right?

Mariah: Absolutely.

Tessa: Do you have any idea how much I love you?

Mariah: Almost as much as i love you?

Tessa: More. And we’ll both get to where we want to be eventually. I can feel that in my heart and in my soul.

Mariah: So do I.

Tessa: But in the meantime, I think we should take a step back from having conversations about having a baby. You know, we just happen to be going to a beautiful place that neither of us have been. So let’s just breathe [Inhales sharply] Take in the moment, and maybe we can table our conversations about having a baby until we get back from tuscany?

Mariah: Yeah. Yeah, we can, uh — we can wait to talk about it until after victoria’s wedding.

Tessa: Oh, great. Thank you.

Mariah: I don’t want to push you away. I need you more than I ever have.

Tessa: I’m gonna be here for you, no matter what happens. I’m not going anywhere without you.

Mariah: [ Sniffles ]

Jack: The flight has been delayed.

Phyllis: What?

Jack: Apparently, there’s a storm in our flight path. They’re advising that we sit tight tonight and leave for italy first thing in the morning.

Phyllis: No! No!

Nick: I really don’t want mess things up for kyle and summer.

Jack: I’ve already spoken with kyle, told him of our situation. He and summer are both willing to adapt accordingly. This is the advantage to a small ceremony. Now, why don’t you guys go home, get some sleep?

Phyllis: Ohh…okay. Um, do you mind if we just leave the luggage and we’ll be here bright and early?

Jack: Yeah, that’s a plan.

Phyllis: Okay. So… hey, thank you.

Jack: Thank you for what?

Phyllis: Thank you for keeping me company while i waited for nick.

Jack: You never have to thank me for that. You’re always welcome here. I’ll see you both in the morning.

[ Door opens ]

Jack: [ Sighs ]

Ashland: Victoria?

Nikki: You just missed her.

Ashland: Ah. Any idea when she might return?

Nikki: No.

Ashland: Is she, um, at a meeting or perhaps making some last-minute arrangements for our big day?

Nikki: I am aware of what you’re doing, and there is no need to dance around the issues. Victoria told me everything.

Ashland: Ah, well, that’s not a surprise. Does this change the way you see me? Ordinary tissues burn when theo blows.

Traci: Jack, do you want to tell me what’s going on?

Jack: Wh– oh. The flight’s been delayed. We’re gonna leave in the morning.

Traci: Oh. Well, in that case, I have some good news. I don’t have to go to new york after all and see my agent, so i can fly to milan with you.

Jack: That is great. Yeah, ashley is jetting in from paris. She’ll get there right before us.

Traci: Oh, how awesome. But I wasn’t only talking about the flight.

Jack: Oh?

Traci: You know that I had this lovely conversation with phyllis earlier.

Jack: Did you?

Traci: [ Laughs ] And I happened to notice a certain warmth in your voice when you went on and on about all that she’s accomplished with the hotel.

Jack: Traci, I —

Traci: And then there was this lovely glow that you’ve had about you. I haven’t seen it in a long time. And then just now there was a wistfulness when you watched her leave with nick. Okay. Okay. I’m just supposed to pretend like it’s all my imagination and this is just a fantastic new plot for a novel of mine.

Jack: You know what? You’re right. I have been thinking a lot lately about my romantic history with phyllis.

Traci: How worried should i be?

Jack: Why would you worry about anything?

Traci: [ Sighs ] Well, friendship is one thing, but it’s phyllis. I mean, given your history with her, I hope you’re not thinking about creating new memories along those lines.

Jack: I am not planning on acting on any of my feelings. Phyllis and nick are perfectly happy, and they know I respect their relationship.

Traci: Then where are these old feelings coming from?

Jack: I don’t know. Maybe the whole debacle with sally, you know, starting things up with her, has me thinking about what I loved and lost.

Traci: Oh, jack.

Jack: I didn’t say that for pity. I said that so you’d give me some space. I don’t want you worrying about me. Just stop worrying about me, okay?

Traci: As if you telling me that is gonna stop me.

[ Laughs ]

Jack: [ Sighs ]

Phyllis: Great, babe. Okay, well, I am so glad that everything is still on track.

Nick: We’ll see you soon, sweetheart!

Phyllis: He says — did — okay. Oh, alright. Well, hey, you go to sleep, okay?

Nick: Ciao!

Phyllis: Ciao! He says, “ciao!” That — that means “bye.”

[ Laughs ] She knows. Alright, alright. I love you. Bye.

Nick: She sounds so happy.

Phyllis: She does.

Nick: I’m just glad that our flight delay isn’t putting a monkey wrench into their wedding plans.

Phyllis: Oh, no. After everything they’ve gone through, no way. Nothing is gonna set them back. They’re gonna get the life that they deserve, the happy life that they deserve.

Nick: Every couple should feel like that on their wedding day.

Phyllis: Hmm. Your conversation with victoria is still weighing on you. Do you want to talk about it?

Nick: I get the feeling there’s something else you’d like to ask me. So, what is it?

Phyllis: [ Sighs ] Do you regret doing this? Do you regret going to new jersey, finding out the truth about ashland? Are you sorry that you pursued it?

Nikki: Actually, ashland, i haven’t decided yet what I think of you now.

Ashland: That’s understandable.

Nikki: I can tell you I hate what it’s doing to my daughter.

Ashland: I can’t stand it, either. I love victoria, and I want to do whatever I can to make things right.

Nikki: Well, if you think i am going to offer you some insight into how to handle this situation, you are wrong. I don’t know what victoria’s considering. But I can tell you that you need to let her resolve this in her mind.

Ashland: Are you suggesting i give her space?

Nikki: Yes. Wait for her to reach out to you, that she is ready to talk to you.

Ashland: [ Sighs ] Whatever she needs. I’ll get a room at the grand phoenix until, uh — well,

if victoria lets me come home. On the outside, I looked fine.

Tessa: Oh, you’re in bed already?

Mariah: Yeah. I’m wiped.

Tessa: Mm. Well, it’s been a long day. I can’t imagine a better way to end it than falling asleep in your arms.

[ Sighs ] So, I was thinking, since we have so many errands to run tomorrow before our trip, why don’t we squeeze in a little fun, too, you know? Maybe we could, uh, grab lunch at that new sushi place or, uh, grab a mani-pedi or — [ Gasps ] Ooh, ooh, ooh, I got it. We could get new tattoos. You choose mine, and I choose yours. Wow. Nothing? I thought I would at least get a laugh or, “are you out of your mind, tessa?” Mariah? I love you.

[ Jewelry clatters ]

Traci: Are you thinking about dina?

Jack: Yeah. I had a dream about her the other night. Oh, it was so real. I heard her voice crystal clear.

Traci: Really? What did she say?

Jack: She was giving me advice, which is funny because when dad passed, I — I used to visit with him from time to time — he’d give me advice or an earful when I needed it.

Traci: [ Laughs ] That sounds just like daddy. I see colleen, and I talk to her all the time.

Jack: Really?

Traci: Sometimes it’s just simple things, you know, like i just have written the perfect sentence. And sometimes it’s a little more significant. On the day that she came into this world…or on the day that she left it.

[ Sighs ] I think it’s perfectly normal.

Jack: You never told me that.

Traci: I didn’t think it was that big a deal.

Jack: I don’t know. Maybe not. I just think it’s amazing that I’m so invested in parental advice. It’s not like I listened to dad when he actually offered it.

Traci: [ Laughs ] Few children do.

Jack: Then of course there was dina…who I always felt so distant from in those later years, so disconnected.

Traci: Jack, it wasn’t like she was known for her personal counsel or anything parental, for that matter. I don’t think it’s odd at all that you would want to hear their voices, listen to the things they have to tell you noW.

Jack: No?

Traci: Love never really leaves us. It — it changes form, and i guess it’s our responsibility to recognize it when it comes back into our lives.

Jack: You’re exactly right. That’s why you have to stop worrying about me.

Traci: Oh, have we circled back to phyllis again?

Jack: No. You were right. You said it. Love comes and goes. It changes shape. It never dies. It’s just part of life. Everyone who has touched our heart somehow stays there. And I think we’re all the better for it.

Phyllis: I feel like this is my fault.

Nick: Why would you say that?

Phyllis: Because I’m the one who encouraged you to follow your instincts regarding ashland.

Nick: [ Sighs ]

Phyllis: I’m the one who did that. I encouraged you to go to new jersey. And now I think I made the wrong decision.

Nick: You didn’t force my hand, alright? I was gonna go through with this whether you gave me your approval or not. It was completely my decision.

Phyllis: And now?

Nick: I have zero regrets. I did what I thought was right, what any brother should do. You know, I’m still trying to get a grip on what’s going on in vick’s head. She lashed out at me after i told her the truth about ashland and continued to defend him. Um…my sister’s no fool. She doesn’t ignore facts. She agrees that what I told her was accurate, and in spite of everything, she, uh — she still loves and respects him.

Phyllis: [ Laughs ] I don’t know. Maybe this is what victoria needed to realize that love is profound. Uh, I don’t know. Maybe it strengthened her bond with ashland. Maybe you helped her — you helped her go into this marriage with her eyes wide open.

Nick: Look, I appreciate what you’re trying to do, but I know my sister. I don’t think she’s gonna see it like that. At least, not any time soon.

Ashland: Thank you.

Victoria: Ashland.

Nick: I think I should talk to ashland in private.

Victoria: Well, I understand that, but I’m not going anywhere.

Ashland: Victoria is here because I want her to be.

Victoria: So, what is it that is so important that you felt you needed to share it with us? Was it some ancient dirt that you uncovered when you were in new jersey? That’s right. I know you went on a little trip to new jersey, thanks to phyllis. She was her usual cagey self, and she couldn’t explain why you were visiting the town where ashland got his start. I told my fiancé all about it.

Nick: You sure you want victoria here for this?

Victoria: Here for what, nicholas?

Nick: Ashland, why don’t we talk about a 40-year-old car crash that killed a guy named bobby defranco?

Abby: Shh, shh. Okay, dominic. Why don’t you consider going to sleep before mommy has to go to the restaurant? Sleep, baby. Sleep. Shh. The nanny is gonna watch you while I’m gone, but mommy is gonna be back so soon before you wake up. And I am gonna feed you and I’m gonna take care of you because that’s what mommies do. You can always count on me.

Mariah: Mmm. Something smells good.

Tessa: [ Chuckles ]

Mariah: Lemony.

Tessa: Chicken piccata.

Mariah: [ Gasps ] With extra piccata?

Tessa: Well, you know, that’s not a thing. You always tell me to order it like that, and the wait staff always looks at me like I’m a crazy person.

Mariah: You’re probably just saying it wrong. Thank you for getting me dinner. And I don’t even have to move, so, really, it’s just a win-win for me.

Tessa: Well, I know that you’re tired and you need your rest, but you need to eat, too.

Mariah: You take such good care of me.

[ Knock on door ] Uh, did you order a special dessert that needed to be sent up separately?

Tessa: Uh, no.

Sharon: Hi!

Tessa: Hi.

Sharon: Um… did I come at a bad time?

Amanda: Did you make reservations?

Devon: It’s the middle of the week. I figured we should be alright.

Moses: Hey. Sorry. Coming through. Sorry.

Devon: Hello.

Amanda: [ Chuckles ]

Devon: [ Chuckles ] Hey.

Faith: Hey.

Amanda: Hi. Is everything okay?

Faith: I’m not sure, but i think our big surprise date is off to a shaky start.

Ashland: [ Exhales heavily ]

Victoria: Are you okay?

Ashland: [ Sighs ]

Nick: Clearly that name means something to you.

Ashland: Bobby defranco. That’s a name I never wanted to hear again. Especially from anyone in victoria’s family.

Nick: Then I am on the right track.

Victoria: I would like some answers here. Who is this dead man, bobby defranco?

Ashland: That dead man is me. And tonight’s winning numbers are 18,

Victoria: You’re bobby defranco?

Ashland: I was…before i became ashland locke.

Victoria: Well, we all know that he changed his name. We all know that. It’s not a big deal.

Nick: This crash doesn’t concern you?

Victoria: So what? So he tried to cover his tracks by pretending that his original identity died in the car crash. It’s not so terrible, nick.

Nick: Nothing fake about it. And no one’s pretending. A young man did die.

Victoria: Is that true?

Ashland: Yes. It was foolish for me to think that I could run forever from what happened.

Victoria: Run from what?

Ashland: Uh…I was born robert defranco. Everything that I have told you about my past is true. I ran away from home. I had an abusive father and — and an enabling mother. But there was more to it. There was someone who… gave me the courage to — to change that situation I was in, a friend of mine that my parents didn’t even know. And his name was ashland locke.

Victoria: You named yourself after him?

Ashland: Yeah.

[ Chuckles ] We were kindred spirits. I mean, so much so that one day we did what a lot of dumb 16-year-olds do. We got matching tattoos.

Victoria: The one on your calf?

Ashland: Yeah. And my dad saw it. And he beat me up real good. So ashland saw me that day, all banged up, and he said, “we got to get out of here.” So we took off. And we bummed around the beach towns of new jersey and worked odd jobs up and down the jersey coast, did whatever we could. And one day we found ourselves in an arcade in a boardwalk pavilion in a beautiful little town called keansburg. I hear this commotion. All of a sudden, I understand that my father’s looking out for me. He’s trying to find where I am. He’s pissed off. So, ashland sees what’s happening, and he throws me under a pinball machine. And he runs interference, and he tells them I’m in philadelphia with a girl. I owed him so big. And we bonded so big after that. We were inseparable. He had no family. He was a loner, like me. And we became family for each other. And I had big plans. We were gonna strike it rich.

Nick: So, this was about money for you?

Ashland: I-is that what you got from what I just said? We were kids. We didn’t think about anything like that. We didn’t know what we were gonna do. But ashland had this idea that he wanted to be involved in broadcasting or communications, and somehow he snagged this interview with this lady named camilla rhodes to try and get a job as an intern at one of her stations.

Victoria: The widow who mentored you.

Ashland: Yes. But my friend couldn’t make that interview because the night before he was supposed to meet with her [Chuckles] The two of us were out in his beat-up old camaro — and he liked to drive fast, you know? It scared the crap out of me all the time. And we were screaming down this road, and I don’t know how it happened, but he lost control of the car and we wrapped it around a tree. And I was ejected out of the car and I must have been knocked unconscious. And I came to the vehicle and he was pinned against the steering wheel and I tried to get him out. I couldn’t feel a pulse or anything. Car’s starting to catch fire, and I’m screaming for somebody to come and help us. I don’t know what to do. I’m in shock. I tried to pull him out. He won’t budge! And all of sudden, I pull him so hard, his wallet flies out. And at this time, the flames are growing and the whole car is starting to be engulfed in flames. And I’m confused and I pick up his wallet and I throw mine down and — and I take off as far away from the car right before it was about to explode like a — like a fireball. And so the explosion attracted some passerby, and — and I was about to wave them down and get help, but I realized if I talked to this person and I told them, explained what was going on, they’d probably notify the police. Sure enough, two police cars arrived, and as soon as they did, I figured they’re gonna take me back to my father. And I was not gonna let that happen. So I took off into the woods, and right at that moment I made the decision to become ashland locke. And I let my life as bobby defranco… burn up in flames. What if younger looking skin could start at midnight?

Sharon: I thought you could use a home-cooked meal.

Tessa: I — I, uh, have some errands to run.

Mariah: At this hour?

Tessa: Yeah. There’s just some things i forgot to do, and plus it’ll give you some time to talk.

Sharon: Thank you, tessa.

Tessa: I’ll be right back.

Mariah: Okay. Great.

Sharon: I know what you’re thinking — “I asked for some time and space away from everyone.”

Mariah: You nailed it.

Sharon: And I gave that to you.

Mariah: Uh, yeah, you almost lasted, mm, 24 hours?

Sharon: Well, I think i lasted more than a day. Anyway, I lasted longer than i thought I would. You can give me some credit for that.

Mariah: [ Scoffs ]

Sharon: Anyway, it’s good to see you making jokes again.

Mariah: Who says I’m making jokes?

Sharon: Well, you seem better. That’s a relief. But how about some genuine answers?

Mariah: Mnh, uh-oh.

Sharon: How are you really feeling?

Mariah: [ Sighs ]

Faith: Moses picked me up on time, but he said he forgot something, so we raced here.

Devon: Ah. Well, I’m sure he’ll find whatever it is, and you guys will be on your way.

Amanda: You still don’t know where you’re going?

Faith: No.

Devon: There he is.

Moses: Hey. Sorry for bursting in, but i needed this. That would have been embarrassing, having to finish up our big date by washing the dishes.

Faith: Ah. So part of our date is dinner. A restaurant?

Amanda: You still haven’t told faith where she’s going?

Moses: It’s all a mystery. That’s part of the fun.

Devon: Exactly.

Amanda: Oh, so you know a little something about this date, huh?

Moses: Yeah, but I swore devon to secrecy, so he’s not gonna blow it, right?

Devon: Oh, like you almost just did by forgetting your wallet? Like that?

Amanda: You are very trusting. I mean, you could be expecting a glamorous night on the town and end up at a paintball range.

Faith: Paintball?

Moses: No. Next time. But, uh, we’re gonna get out of here before devon ruins the surprise.

Devon: Mm-hmm.

Faith: Bye. Thank you.

Devon: See you guys.

Amanda: Have fun.

[ Door closes ]

Victoria: So you just ran off as the car burned? Where did you go?

Ashland: To the water. I broke into this beach house, an old, abandoned beach hut. I stayed there for a while. I stole newspapers to keep up on the news, to find out if there were any developments in the story.

Nick: So, your friend’s body was badly burned, and your I.D. Ends up in the wallet that’s next to the accident.

Ashland: Well, the police assumed that the person driving the car was bobby defranco. My father was called in to identify the corpse, and he made a positive I.D. Based on the tattoo on my calf. He was able to verify that it was me. Dna testing was very limited in those days, so there was no reason to investigate further.

Nick: So, case closed.

Ashland: It was my chance for a new start, a clean slate… and to permanently escape from the hell of my father. So I jumped in, hook, line, and sinker, to the identity of ashland locke. I went to the interview with camilla rhodes. She never met ash. They only talked on the phone, so she had no reason to believe that I wasn’t who I said I was. I got the job, and the rest is history.

Nick: Well, I certainly have some questions about this split-second decision that seems awfully calculated. I mean, you end up with his wallet, and yours is left behind at this car that’s on fire.

Ashland: Yeah. A car that was on fire. I was engulfed in smoke. There were flames everywhere. The only friend that I had in the world was dead, and I was fraid of being found out ’cause I knew my father would have beat me for days. So my survival instincts went into overdrive.

Nick: I mean, when the other car pulled up, why didn’t you get the driver to help you pull your buddy out?

Ashland: ‘Cause I told you — I thought he was dead! And there was gonna be no miracle rescue! I-I’ve thought about this day in and day out my whole life! I-I don’t care if you’re skeptical or if you don’t believe me. I just hope to god that you never find yourself in a similar situation. Ashland locke saved my life when my father was coming after me. And I wasn’t able to save his. Now, we all know progressive offers 24/7 protection,

Abby: Hey!

Tessa: Hi.

Abby: How’s mariah?

Tessa: Uh, I’m — I’m not sure, but I know she won’t be hungry.

Abby: What do you mean?

Tessa: Oh, um, sharon brought over so much food just right after we ordered room service. But she’s there now, hopefully offering mariah some comfort and guidance.

Abby: I have to tell you — I miss having you two at the house.

Tessa: Oh, my gosh, that’s so sweet of you to say.

Abby: Yeah, we have to get together, spend some quality time with dominic.

Tessa: Well, um, mariah’s — you know, she’s finally starting to get back to her old self. She’s laughing. She’s making jokes. So hopefully she’ll be up to that soon.

Abby: [ Chuckles ]

Mariah: I am feeling good. Much better, anyway. Definitely stronger after getting out of the house.

Sharon: I know there’s more going on. I’ve heard some things, although it’s all secondhand. What prompted you to leave the chancellor estate?

Mariah: “Secondhand”? What am I, the talk of the town?

Sharon: No. It’s not gossip. It’s people who care about you, you know, sharing thoughts.

Mariah: How is that any different from gossip?

Sharon: Okay, would you stop avoiding answer the question? Why’d you leave abby’s place?

Mariah: [ Sighs ] It was just a lot harder than i thought it was gonna be… being around dominic. After carrying that baby and protecting him all throughout the ordeal of being kidnapped, i just… I know that he’s not mine, alright, technically and biologically speaking. But…there’s still a bond. And it’s strong. It’s hardcore strong, which of course you warned me about.

Sharon: Well, I’m not here to say, “I told you so.” It’s a tough situation.

Mariah: I just had to get out of that house. It was rough seeing bowie and knowing that he’s — he’s not my child to raise.

Sharon: Well, what can I do to help?

Mariah: I will be okay eventually.

Sharon: I know you will. But what can we do to speed that up? Would getting away from this place maybe help? I knew that finding a new apartment was gonna be a little bit tricky, but wouldn’t you rather in the meantime stay someplace more homey?

Mariah: What do you have in mind?

Sharon: Why don’t you move in with me and faith and rey for a little while?

Mariah: Thank you. That’s very sweet, but I can’T.

Sharon: I think it would be really good for you.

Mariah: Space. Remember? Space.

Sharon: I understand. Okay. But I do want to know what comes- next.

Ashland: So, how much of that story did you know before tonight?

Nick: I didn’t have all the pieces, but I was able to put most of it together. I tracked down this reporter in toms river who was covering the crash.- He said he always thought there was more to the story. But there wasn’t a proper investigation done because of the witness.

Ashland: What witness?

Nick: The driver of that car who pulled up. He said when he got there, he saw some kid running into the woods, but the police didn’t think he’d be reliable because obviously he had been drinking.

Ashland: That was probably a lucky break for me.

Nick: Yeah, you’ve had a lot of those, huh?

Ashland: You think? It was wrong of me… not to tell you this part of the story. I should have told you everything right from the start. You deserve that. I was so ashamed of how I acted all those years ago. But I’m more ashamed that i didn’t tell you the whole truth. Now you know. And I hope you can accept it.

Victoria: How could you do this? Ok everyone, our mission is to provide complete,

Mariah: What tessa and I want to do first is find a new home, like, as soon as we can.

Sharon: It’s a good first step. You have to have a safe and healthy home. But what about your more immediate issue?

Mariah: Which is what?

Sharon: Getting you through this postpartum separation anxiety. I’d be happy to recommend some therapists if you think you’d benefit from talking to a professional. I mean, getting some space — that can help, but I don’t want you to isolate yourself or rush into anything big.

Mariah: Rush into anything big? What exactly have you and tessa been talking about?

Sharon: Well, you know, I went to her. And I drilled her really hard, and then I poured on all of this, like, motherly guilt until she told me the truth.

Mariah: Told you what?

Sharon: That you want to have a baby of your own.

Mariah: Tessa discussed that with you?

Sharon: Do you really think you’re ready for that?

Mariah: Yes. 100%. But clearly tessa is not.

Sharon: Well, I can see the benefit in waiting.

Mariah: So, you don’t think we should have a baby?

Sharon: No, I’m not saying that. I’m saying just, you know, wait six months or a year. Take the space that you’ve been asking for and really think this through.

Mariah: [ Sighs ]

Sharon: I mean, having a baby would be wonderful. You’re both gonna be wonderful mothers. But I don’t think it should be a knee-jerk reaction to anything.

Mariah: It’s not a knee-jerk reaction. Having a baby with the woman i love is the next step to me moving on with my life.

Abby: Please let mariah know that you have an open invitation to come by the house any time. But no pressure. Just happy thoughts.

Tessa: I’ll do that.

Abby: I really do miss you guys so much.

[ Cellphone pings ]

Tessa: Hmm.

Abby: Is everything okay?

Tessa: Uh…well, mariah’s texts are usually a little bit more lighthearted than this. This doesn’t seem good.

Abby: Well, I hope there’s not a problem.

Tessa: Well, I, uh — i better go find out. Um, I’ll talk to you later?

Abby: Yeah.

Tessa: Okay

Devon: Hey, tessa.

Tessa: Hi.

Devon: Hey. How you doing? How’s mariah?

Tessa: Um, she’s, uh — she’s working through some things. Um, I — I actually do have to go.

Devon: Okay.

Tessa: Sorry.

Devon: Yeah.

Abby: Hi!

Devon: Hey, you.

Amanda: Hi.

Abby: How are you?

Amanda: Good.

Abby: Congratulations on moving in together.

Amanda: Thank you. Oh, well, it looks like faith and moses aren’t here, so we can cross society off the list. Their location is still a fun mystery.

Devon: That’s right.

Abby: What are you talking about?

Devon: Uh, moses and faith went on a special date, and they didn’t tell us where it’s at.

Abby: Oh, my gosh. Stop it. Young love. It’s so sweet. Oh, my gosh. I can’t believe my niece is dating.

Devon: I know. Tell me about it. I’m gonna remind you of this conversation when dominic starts dating.

Abby: Stop it right there. He’s so tiny, I can’t even think about that right now.

Devon: I know.

Amanda: Oh, no.

Devon: What’s wrong?

Amanda: Um, it’s imani. She’s taking naya to the emergency. Her heart rate’s spiking.

Devon: We should go then.

Amanda: No. Thank you for wanting to help, but I think I should just go on my own. She’s not gonna want too many people around, okay?

Devon: Okay. That’s fine.

Amanda: Okay.

Devon: Keep me up to date.

Abby: Bye.

Amanda: Yeah.

Devon: Um…I guess it’s just gonna be dinner for one now.

Nick: So, after hearing about this crash from your fiancé, I’m the one you’re mad at? Victoria!

Ashland: Well, I guess you got what you wanted.

Nick: I wanted the truth. That was something you weren’t willing to give us.

Ashland: Ah, yes. The almighty truth. Solves everything, doesn’t it? Sure gave victoria peace of mind.

Nick: You know what? The bottom line is you built your career, your success, your life on the back of this tragedy.

Ashland: That may be true. But now you know that I didn’t get everything handed to me.

Nick: You watched your best friend die in front of you, and your first instinct is to grab his wallet and run off into the woods? That says all I need to know about you.

Ashland: I had to get my hands dirty and make some hard choices in a very tragic situation. And that’s probably something that you will never understand.

Victoria: [ Sighs ]

Ashland: I-I’m sorry. I — I truly am. I should have been completely honest with you about how i became ashland locke when you first asked me about my past.

Victoria: Yeah, y-you swore to me that there weren’t gonna be any more secrets.

Ashland: I did.

Victoria: How am I supposed to believe you anymore, ashland?

Ashland: Well, I wouldn’t blame you if you said you couldn’t trust me ever again. But I’d be devastated.

Victoria: Why didn’t you tell me?

Ashland: Shame. It was too painful to ever talk about. I was so ashamed that I never told another living soul that story until today. For 40 years, I’ve held onto that. That image, the memory of ash… and that horrible night has haunted me ever since. But I… I’d like to think that I’ve built my life with the ethos of no regrets. But there isn’t a day that goes by…where I don’t wonder the same thing that nick did. What if I stayed? What if, by some miracle, I was able to get some help and — and pull ashland from the wreckage? How would that have made my life different?

Victoria: Have you come to any conclusions?

Ashland: No, I have not. See, I’ve tried to convince myself that that’s what ashland would have wanted. He wanted to give up his identity to rescue me. I keep trying to tell myself that I would have done the same thing if the situation were reversed. But — but that’s something we’ll never know, will we? But I do know that if my life had taken a different direction, it never would have led me to you, and there is nothing false or secretive about what I feel right now… ’cause I have never loved anyone else the way I love you. But if this is what breaks us up, I-I completely understand. I just hope and pray with every fiber of my being that it won’T.

Victoria: This is just… it’s a lot to process. I’m really just gonna need some time, I think.

Ashland: I-I understand. Yeah. I’ll give you all the time you need.

Faith: Oh, that was so much fun. I don’t know how you pulled that off.

Moses: Oh, it was no big deal. Anyone can have dinner at the top of the tower. You just need a reservation.

Faith: But a private room overlooking the whole city? I didn’t even know they had that.

Moses: [ Laughs ] Yeah, I had to call in a favor.

Faith: Favor from who?

Moses: Your grandfather.

Faith: Grandpa got you that special room?

Moses: Yeah. I beat him in a game of chess, so he owed me.

[ Chuckles ] But he was glad to help out.

Faith: I’m glad he did. That filet mignon was delicious.

Moses: Though being alone up there together like that was like being in a movie.

Faith: Especially when you had devon’s new singer audrina serenade us. That was magical.

Moses: Yeah. Yeah. I owe him big time for that.

Faith: I’ll never forget it.

Moses: Good. I’m glad you liked our date.

Faith: Liked? No. I loved it. It was the most perfect night ever.

Nick: Vick.

[ Picture thuds ]

Victoria: I don’t want to talk to you. Definitely don’t want to see you.

Nick: Yeah. I get it.

Victoria: No. You don’T. You betrayed my trust, nicholas. I told you how much I love ashland and how committed I am to this marriage. I asked you — no. I-I begged you to leave this alone and to — to not be like billy and start digging around in his past. I-I guess — I guess you couldn’t help yourself.

Nick: You know, you also said something else in that conversation. You told me you had serious concerns about the man you were gonna marry.

Victoria: Well, that didn’t give you an invitation to investigate him. I made that very clear to you.

Nick: I’m sorry if you’re hurt by this, but I don’t regret what I did, alright? It forced ashland to come clean about who he was all those years ago. Who knows how many other shady things he did during that time?

Victoria: Ashland has been in the public eye for a long time. He is a powerful force in business and media. I am sure that he has done some ruthless things, but nothing illegal.

Nick: I’m just saying, if he left his best friend to die —

Victoria: Did you listen? His friend was probably already dead. The car was about to blow up. He had to make one of the hardest decisions he ever made in his whole life. And he wasn’t even an adult! Do you remember what noah and summer were like at that age? How would they have handled that situation? Better yet, how would have a young nick newman dealt with that? How would you like the mistakes from your past, from your youth, to be throw back in your face?

Nick: I would never do anything like that.

Victoria: No, because you’ve never been in that position before, have you? Your father was tough, but he wasn’t physically abusive. Ashland’s father was a monster, hunting him down. You — you were born with privileges and advantages. You could never, ever relate to what ashland went through, so don’t come in here telling me that he is a terrible person until you understand the position that he was in. Can you blame him for what he did? How does something that happened 40 years ago mean that he is not worthy of love and forgiveness and happiness? Oh, I had never seen a picture of her

Abby: How’s amanda?

Devon: Hey. She’s, uh, just anxious about naya. I can hear it in her voice. She’s not usually like that.

Abby: Yeah. She’s typically the definition of unflappable. I could tell she was really bothered. She seemed shaken up.

Devon: Well, she worries about her mom because it’s a new relationship, you know?

Abby: Well, that’s understandable. She’s protective.

Devon: Yeah. Speaking of protective, I ran into tessa on the way in here, and she seemed a little frazzled about something. Did you talk to her or…

Abby: Yeah. She’s worried about mariah.

Devon: I think we all are.

Abby: Yeah. I mean, she was trying to be optimistic, but it almost seemed like wishful thinking. And then she got a text from mariah. She said it wasn’t good.

Devon: Well, you know, i would do anything to help mariah out in all this, but I just think that she needs time. And there’s only so much we can do.

[ Lock whirs, disengages ]

[ Door opens ]

Tessa: Hey. How was your visit with sharon?

Mariah: What have you been talking to my mom about?

Tessa: What do you mean?

Mariah: You told my mom that I wanted to have a baby with you without telling me. How could you do that?

Tessa: Okay, please calm down.

Mariah: No! You went behind my back again! First abby, now my mom. Why would you do that to me?!

Nick: I heard what you said about ashland being in a tough spot that night and having to make a difficult decision.

Victoria: Yes, that’s it.

Nick: Well, I guess you and i have different opinions about what’s right and wrong.

Victoria: Oh, god. Don’t get self-righteous with me. You betrayed me.

Nick: That’s not what I was doing.

Victoria: The minute that you got on that plane to new jersey, when I asked you not to look into ashland’s past, you betrayed me.

Nick: Vick, come on.

Victoria: No! Stop it! Just knock it off. Just stop. Shouldn’t you, um — shouldn’t you be headed to summer’s wedding? Just go. And don’t bother flying on to tuscany.

Nick: Why are you saying that? ‘Cause I’m no longer invited?

Victoria: Would you just go?

Nick: [ Sighs ] You know what? I know you’ll never say it, but this news concerns you more than you’ll ever admit.

Billy: No. Listen to me. We need to figure out what happened after that. Why gaines checked out of the hotel so abruptly and where he went. I’m sorry, but that’s not an adequate answer. People don’t just disappear. Okay, fine. Then come up with another solution. I wouldn’t be surprised if victor newman had something to do with gaines deciding not to talk to me, so ask around. See if anybody saw anything or heard anything. Okay, look, talk to one of your banking associates. Do whatever you need to do. Just figure it out.

Jack: What’s got you so worked up?

Billy: Hi. How are you?

Jack: You first.

Billy: I am — I’m fine. It’s just, lily has gone to stanford to go see mattie, and I’m here running everything on my own.

Jack: Normally you thrive on chaos, so that can’t possibly be the problem.

Billy: Who said there’s a problem? You’re basing that on the assumption of hearing part of a conversation. Actually, how much of that conversation did you hear?

Jack: Enough to hear that you were pretty frustrated. Are you delving into areas that wouldn’t make lily happy?

Billy: No. She knows the whole story.

Jack: Okay.

Billy: If I was gonna fill you in — and I’m not saying i will — I highly doubt that you would be receptive, no matter how convincing the evidence is.

Jack: Evidence of what? What exactly are you investigating?

Billy: Why victoria should not rush into marrying ashland locke.

Jack: Wish I could say I was surprised by that. Phyllis hinted that nicholas is on a similar mission.

Phyllis: Hey, I didn’t expect to hear from you so soon. Have you landed? Do you need me to pick you up?

Nick: No. I’m still in atlantic city. Mechanical issues.

Phyllis: You’re kidding me.

Nick: I wish I was.

Phyllis: [ Sighs ] Well, I mean, how long is it gonna be? Well, that’s a stupid question. Of course you don’t know. Hey, uh, what have you found out?

Nick: Remember that lead that was promising that I texted you about?

Nick: Well, it took me down a rabbit hole, and not a good one.

Phyllis: How bad is it?

Nick: Very, if what I think all this means is true, but i don’t want to get into it on the phone. I’ll fill you in when I see you. I think you and jack and traci should get on the plane and go to milan. I’ll get there as soon as I can.

Phyllis: Oh, traci is not going to be flying with us. There was a change in her plans.

Nick: Yeah. Okay.

Phyllis: Yeah, so… well, I guess you should just, you know, fly to milan from new jersey.

Nick: I got to confront ashland first and see what he has to say, but I promise you I’m gonna see our girl get married one way or another.

Phyllis: I wish I were flying with you, but I know this is important to you.

Nick: I got to follow through on what I’ve learned. This trip raised some serious questions, and I need some answers from ashland before my sister says “I do.”

Nikki: Well, we got a lot accomplished.

Victoria: Yes, and not a moment too soon.

Nikki: Is everything alright?

Victoria: What? Yes. I’m fine. Why?

Nikki: Oh, I don’t know. You just seem a little keyed up.

Victoria: It just feels like, uh — it feels like there’s so much left to do.

Nikki: How was your fitting with lauren? Is your wedding dress almost ready?

Victoria: Uh, yes…and no. To tell you the truth, mom, I’m — I’m really not that thrilled with the design.

Nikki: Oh, no.

Victoria: It’s close, but —

Nikki: Not quite what you had envisioned.

Victoria: [ Sighs ] Well, lauren assured me that she would be able to fix it. It’s just one added stress that I don’t need right now.

Nikki: You do realize that that’s what I’m for — to take some of the burden off your shoulders. Darling, please trust me when i say that everything for your wedding is going to be perfect.

Victoria: I want to believe that’s true.

Nikki: And you can. Look, it’s very normal to be anxious, that wonderful combination of nerves and excitement. So, when did you last speak to ashland?

Victoria: He canceled our dinner plans. Or at least he said he might have to, via text. He said that something unexpected came up, some sort of business that he had to handle.

Nikki: And that just made you more concerned.

Ashland: Circumstances have changed. I no longer need the money.

Douglas: The wedding surprise for your bride — did that fall through?

Ashland: Well, I’m sure I can find something even more spectacular.

Douglas: [ Chuckles ] Well, best of luck with everything.

Ashland: Thank you.

Victoria: Well, this is a surprise.

Ashland: My meeting ended quicker than expected and I’m free for the rest of the day and I would love to spend the rest of it with you.

Victoria: Well, I’m with my mom. Since you said you were busy, she and I were planning on grabbing a bite together.

Nikki: Oh, no, honey, we can do that any time. Go meet him. I insist.

Ashland: Tell nikki thanks for me.

Victoria: I will. Where are you?

Ashland: Society.

Victoria: I’ll be there in a few. I can’t to see you and hear all about your business meeting. Bye.

Ashland: Excellent. Ohh, it’s nice to get out of work at a reasonable hour, huh?

Nate: Ah, well, it happens occasionally.

Ashland: How’s the new job?

Nate: Hectic. I, uh — I do love it, though. I’m enjoying the challenge of managing our surgical team.

Ashland: Well, not many are up to the task. Clearly you are where you should be.

Nate: Well, so far, so good. Thank you for asking.

Ashland: Of course.

Nate: Now, uh, I don’t mean to overstep, but, uh, as your best man, I feel it’s my responsibility to look out for the groom. You seem tired. Feeling alright these days? How are you managing the effects from the chemo?

Ashland: Physically, uh, i feel remarkably well, which surprises me, given what the doctors had prepared me for. It’s just been a stressful few days.

Nate: Any particular reason?

Ashland: I truly appreciate that. There were a few trouble spots that I had to deal with. Uh, I think I’ve gotten them handled. And from now on, I, uh, promise — no more stressful days. I’m going to focus on enjoying this special time with the woman I love.

Victoria: [ Sighs ]

Nikki: I thought hearing from ashland would reassure you that everything is fine.

Victoria: [ Sighs ] Look, I — I suppose that you’re gonna hear about this at some point. When billy made that stink about that attorney, jesse gaines, I, um — I couldn’t help but feel a little bit concerned about it, so I looked him up online.

Nikki: And?

Victoria: Turns out that his father was an attorney, too, and worked for camilla rhodes, the woman who mentored ashland and gave him his start. Look, after everything that has come to light about ashland’s past, I have to wonder — what is that attorney’s son doing in genoa city now?

Nikki: Well, did you ask ashland about it?

Victoria: No, not yet. I was hoping he would say something to me.

Nikki: Evidently, he hasn’T.

Victoria: I don’t want to make it seem like I don’t trust ashland. Opening up about his past with our family was difficult enough for him.

Nikki: You know, I walked in on ashland and victor at the ranch yesterday. They were talking very quietly, almost conspiratorially.

Victoria: [ Scoffs ] Well, that does sound like dad.

Nikki: I didn’t press them for what was going on. I doubt they would have told me if I had. But, darling, I certainly don’t want to add to your worries.

Victoria: Mom, thank you. I appreciate you telling me. It’s just, I wish I wasn’t having all of these doubts so close to our wedding.

Nikki: I’m sorry. P>> Victoria: You know, this is billy’s fault. He is the one who planted these suspicions in my mind, and i just can’t shake them.

Jack: What it with this incessant needs to dig into ashland locke’s past? You’ve already published plenty of material about him, some of it less than kind. He’s suffering late-stage cancer. Yes, of course, he wants to change part of his life. Why isn’t that enough? What is it about this guy that you and nick don’t trust? What diabolical scheme is he somehow trying to pull off?

Billy: Okay. When ashland was 20 years old, he suddenly came into enough money to purchase two tv stations, which was the start of his career.

Jack: An inheritance.

Billy: No. He did not come from any wealth whatsoever. Far from it. When he was a teen, he ran away, changed his name, gave himself a whole new identity.

Jack: Wait, how do you know all this about him?

Billy: Because I was invited to a newman family gathering with victor and nikki and nick and of course victoria, where he gave us all a very heartfelt confession. He claims that he was trying to escape an abusive father. Of course, that’s his word. There’s no public record of him ever changing his name. And he thinks that that’s enough to just, you know, close the case.

Jack: Well, maybe he’s just trying to protect harrison. I mean, it makes all the sense in the world. He wouldn’t want to say any more, especially to the press.

Billy: Well, he didn’t say anything until he was backed into a corner.

Jack: By you.

Billy: No. I am not the only one that’s suspicious. Victor and nick are looking into ashland, as well. And after ashland’s story, it really only left more questions, like what is his real birth name, which he says he will never tell us at any point whatsoever. Look, just to be very clear, I’m not looking to take this information public, okay? I am simply trying to protect victoria and my children, and ashland seems to think that sharing the bare minimum is enough for us all to back off and stop asking any questions, which really was the only reason I was there in the first place.

Jack: Ashland’s in love, about to marry a woman with whom he has limited time, maybe very limited time. I can understand him not wanting to spend that time fending off attacks from her ex. Look, if victoria is satisfied, that should be enough.

Billy: Well, she’s not.

Jack: She’s told you that?

Billy: No.

Jack: No?

Billy: Look, I know victoria, okay? She is starting to question ashland. She’s starting to wonder what else he’s lying about. And I’m not gonna sit back and let her marry some guy whose entire life is built on lies and deception, okay? I mean, we don’t really know for sure if he’s sick.

Jack: He is going through chemotherapy. He’s just made the gut-wrenching choice to let harrison live in italy with kyle.

Billy: Yeah, that makes it a lot more convincing, doesn’t it?

Jack: You got to stop this. Listen to yourself. Listen to the leaps of logic you’re willing to make to justify what you’re doing.

Billy: I’m protecting the mother of my children, jack.

Jack: I know you keep saying that. Victoria is no longer your responsibility. And let’s be honest. This is not protecting victoria or protecting your kids or maybe even about ashland. This is about you trying to stop victoria from moving on. Did you know that your clothes can actually attract pet hair?

Victoria: Hello, hello.

Ashland: Darling, I’m so glad you could join me.

Victoria: I’m so glad you called. Hi, nate.

Nate: Hey there. Um, elena should be joining me soon.

Ashland: It turns out they had the same idea that we did to have an early dinner. Yeah. And here she is right now.

Elena: Hey!

Nate: Hey there. How was your shift?

Elena: Busy, but not insane.

Nate: Well, can’t beat that.

Ashland: How about a table for four? We’d be delighted to have you join us.

Elena: You sure?

Ashland: 100%. In fact, I’m not gonna take no for an answer.

Victoria: U-unless nate and elena would prefer some alone time.

Nate: Uh, we’d love to join you. Right?

Elena: Yeah, absolutely.

Ashland: Well, then it’s settled. I’ll be right back.

Victoria: Wonderful.

Billy: You’re not the first person to claim that I’m having a hard time getting over victoria, but like them, jack, you would be wrong ’cause I am happy with lily, very, very happy. My life has taken a different direction, and I am great with that.

Jack: Historically, that would be about the time that you start to sabotage yourself.

Billy: There you go.

Jack: You’re my brother, and I love you, billy, but you know that’s the truth.

Billy: It’s not what this is about, okay? This is about protecting victoria and my children. That’s it. Their welfare. Nothing more. And given the amount of lies and half-truths that ashland has told us in the short amount of time that he has been in our lives, I would be remiss not to look into him.

Jack: This is your ego talking. Victoria is perfectly capable of of looking after her own life without any of your help.

Billy: Okay, you mentioned nick as having the same thoughts. Does that make him an egomaniac, as well?

Jack: All I know is nick took an unscheduled trip to the east coast.

Billy: What makes you think that this is about ashland?

Jack: Phyllis said that it was about victoria and her wedding, and the way she said it led me to believe that he was doing more than looking for a great wedding gift.

Billy: Hmm.

Jack: Okay, you don’t seem surprised.

Billy: Nick has always claimed that he’s on the fence about ashland. But he’s never really thought there was enough there to keep digging. So, if he’s on the east coast looking into ashland, I am great with that because we are after the same thing — figuring out the riddle of who ashland locke really is and protecting the people that we love. And for your theory, jack, you can throw it out the window because I can care about my ex, I can want what’s best for her without being possessive and having an ulterior motive.

Phyllis: Okay. [ Chuckles ]

Traci: I’m so sorry. Jack has stepped away, but, um, he won’t be gone for long.

Phyllis: Oh.

Traci: Is nick not with you?

Phyllis: Oh, no, he’s not. His, uh — his plane was, you know, stuck in atlantic city. Mechanical issues.

Traci: Well, that’s unfortunate.

Phyllis: Yeah. It is. I mean, he doesn’t know when everything is gonna be fixed. He has to come back here before we go off to milan together, but he’s aware that we may have to go without him. He’ll just take a commercial jet or something, you know? But he’ll definitely be there for kyle and summer’s wedding, definitely.

Traci: Okay. Good. Well, does that mean then that it will only be you and jack flying to italy together?

Phyllis: Uh, yeah. Yeah.

Traci: W– okay. You know what? While we wait for jack, I’m gonna pour you a glass of wine, and we’re gonna have a little talk.

Phyllis: Sounds great. Are you tired of clean clothes that just don’t smell clean?

Traci: [ Laughing ] So like a twofer!

Phyllis: Two for one wedding! Exactly!

Traci: A romance double-header.

Phyllis: Right. You know, that’s a good name —

Traci: For my next novel.

Phyllis: Yeah, well, that, but I was gonna say for a band.

[ Both laugh ]

Traci: Perfect!

Jack: Nice to see the two of you getting into the spirit of things.

Traci: Oh, jack, hi. We — phyllis and I just decided it’s been too long since we’ve had a chance to sit down and talk.

Phyllis: Yeah. Yeah, it’s really nice. I mean, it was the escape club…

Traci: Yes!

Phyllis: …Last time we spo– that was like a hundred years ago.

Traci: Yes, and a night i will never forget. I mean, we only were able to exchange just a few words because phyllis was so focused on making sure that everybody had the perfect spa experience. And succeeded.

Phyllis: Oh, that is so nice of you to say. Thank you.

Jack: Phyllis has poured her heart and soul into that hotel, overcome obstacles I think would be insurmountable for pretty much anyone else.

Phyllis: Thank you. What — what’s that look about?

Traci: [ Laughs ] I’m just thinking about this magical oasis that you have created. Seriously. A destination with so much cachet, completely respected. It’s a reflection of you, phyllis, you know, how much you’ve grown in the last few years as a human being, a woman who has literally risen from the ashes, very phoenix-like, you know?

[ Chuckles ] And yet mayhem seems to still manage to creep in.

[ Laughs ] For example, a rude customer who gets a surprise ice bath.

Phyllis: Oh, well…

Traci: And the, um, grand opening, complete with ecstasy-spiked punch.

Jack: Let’s not forget the armed man descending from the ceiling the day of the hostage crisis.

Phyllis: Thanks.

Traci: [ Laughing ] Exactly! It just gets my writer’s mind going, you know, wondering what in the world is next for this colorful protagonist.

Jack: I can help with that. A jet ride to milan to watch her daughter get married, escorted by the proud and dashing fathers of the bride and groom.

Traci: Oh, jack, jack, you don’t know the news.

Jack: Wait. What news?

Phyllis: Oh! Yeah. Uh, nick — his flight is stuck in atlantic city mechanical issues. You know, so he doesn’t know if he’s gonna get back to genoa city in time, you know? And so we may have to go off to milan without him.

Jack: Well, that’s no problem. I’ll just have my pilot file a later flight plan as soon as we know nick’s status. In the meantime, we can enjoy a dinner together.

Phyllis: Great. Sounds doable.

Traci: Um, I have some work that I have to turn in. So, why don’t you guys figure this all out, let me know when it’s sorted? And, um, phyllis, it really was just great catching up.

Phyllis: It was my pleasure.

Jack: That was a nice surprise, walking in and finding the two of you getting along so well.

Phyllis: Yeah. It was fun. Although it made me wonder.

Jack: Wait. Wonder what?

Phyllis: Well, I wasn’t sure if you said something to her, you know, about…

Jack: Wait. What I confided to you? No. God, no.

Phyllis: I mean, I wouldn’t blame you. I mean, you are very close to your sister.

Jack: Wait a minute. Listen to me. I told nick that, only nick, for a reason. It was the right thing to do. I wanted to be honest. I have nothing to hide. And you have nothing in your glass. Let me get you a little more wine.

Phyllis: Okay, great. Will you have more wine?

Jack: No, I’m gonna have ginger ale tonight ’cause the last time I drank around you, i poured my heart and soul out, and I’m not gonna subject you to that.

Phyllis: Oh, come on! I hope you’re joking. Really. You’re not subjecting me to anything. You could bare your heart and soul out to me any time you want.

Jack: Right back at you.

Nate: Excellent meal. The fish was perfection.

Elena: And I loved seeing those photos of tuscany. The palazzo is gorgeous.

Nate: Gonna be one heck of a wedding.

Elena: We can’t wait.

Ashland: Neither can we. Isn’t that right, darling?

Victoria: Yes. My mother has worked very hard to make this the perfect day.

Ashland: Nikki has done a magnificent job, and I couldn’t be happier that both of you will be joining us.

Nate: Yes. Well, we should get going. Thank you you two for inviting us to join you.

Elena: Yes, we had a great time.

Ashland: Us too.

Nate: And my offer still stands. Let me know if the groom needs anything.

Ashland: I appreciate that.

Elena: See you in italy.

Victoria: We’re looking forward to it.

Ashland: [ Sighs ] You know, ever since we sat down, you seem a bit distracted. Is something wrong?

Victoria: You tell me. Because I am having a lot of trouble not feeling like you’re keeping something from me. Did you get some — some news, some bad news about your illness, and you’re reluctant to tell me? Or maybe this has something to do with the fact that my brother, nick, flew to new jersey for some reason that he won’t share with me. Oh, or maybe it’s about a lawyer named jesse gaines who’s connected to your past and the woman who mentored you.

Ashland: [ Sighs ] Not here.

Victoria: [ Exhales sharply ] Where then?

Ashland: Let’s go back to the office, where we can speak in private.

[ Sighs ]

Billy: Hey, it’s me again. Any news on jesse gaines? Still nothing? Okay, so you’re telling me that this guy basically admitted that he’s got information on ashland’s past, we’ve agreed on a price to get him to talk, and then just up and disappears? It’s not good enough, okay? Keep digging ’cause I need answers soon.

Nikki: Stop trying to fill victoria’s head with doubts.

Billy: Hello, nikki.

Nikki: Victor explicitly warned you about interfering with our daughter’s happiness. And you know what he’s capable of when he’s angry. Defy him at your own risk. Oh, and here’s a news flash. You should worry just as much about defying me.

Elena: Thanks. Hey, did you notice victoria’s mood, too?

Nate: Hard not to notice how distracted she was.

Elena: Intense. My god. Although she did try to hide it. But it shouldn’t be that stressful, planning such a happy occasion.

Nate: Yeah, I think there’s more to it.

Elena: Yeah?

Nate: When I ran into ashland, he seemed to be in pretty bad shape. It reminded me of, uh…

Elena: Of what?

Nate: Why they’re moving so quickly with this wedding.

Elena: Hmm. Have you talked to ashland about his treatment? And what has his oncologist said about his progress?

Nate: We didn’t go into detail, but it’s clear to me he is not as well as he claims to be.

Elena: Sorry to hear that. But it would explain why victoria seemed so off.

Nate: Well, I advised ashland to slow down, you know, stop trying to manage everything. This time should be about the love he and victoria share, and the huge commitment they’re about to make, and nothing more.

Ashland: I assume billy came running to you and that is how you learned about the attorney?

Victoria: Former. Former attorney. Jesse gaines jr., Who lost his license due to malfeasance. I don’t understand why I didn’t hear this from you.

Ashland: Mainly because —

Victoria: Don’t tell me that it’s not a problem. It can’t be a coincidence that this man just shows up in town. Look, you promised me that you weren’t gonna keep any more secrets about your past, and I’m trying really hard to believe that. But I keep getting these unsettling surprises, and it’s getting harder and harder to convince myself that there’s nothing wrong here. So please just stop with the vague reassurances.

[ Sighs ] Just tell me the truth.

Billy: I am not making victoria feel anything. She’s questioning ashland on her own, and for good reason — ’cause every day, a disturbing new piece of evidence pops up.

Nikki: What exactly have you learned that is so damning?

Billy: I’m still putting the pieces together.

Nikki: [ Chuckles ] Just as i thought. The answer is nothing. You have no proof of anything. And yet you are determined to derail this wedding to feed your own ego.

Billy: Actually, the fact that victoria is not blindly accepting ashland’s version of who he is or the secret to his success is a good thing. And I would be glad if I was you that she’s asking questions of her fiancé, a man whose real name she doesn’t even know yet.

Nikki: I will always look out for my daughter’s best interests. And, no, I am not glad that you continue to meddle in her life. That you would criticize the man that she has chosen after the-many ways that you have failed her? Just know this. Victoria is going to marry ashland, and you are going to stop trying to undermine them.

Billy: Uncover the truth. That’s what I’m doing. And I’m not the only one.

Nikki: Back the hell off, billy, now. And do us all a massive favor. Don’t show your face at the wedding. You’re no longer welcome.

Phyllis: You still know your way around a grilled cheese, jack.

Jack: Yeah, I still have a few hidden talents.

Phyllis: Mm.

Jack: Wow, think about it. Tomorrow, this time, we will be in milan, about to watch our kids become husband and wife.

Phyllis: I know. For good. For good this time. Summer ann. She’s my little miracle. Ah. Beautiful. You remember how many doctors said it would never happen again after daniel? Remember that?

Phyllis: Look at you. This is your first ride.

Jack: [ Breathing heavily ]

Phyllis: [ Sobbing ] Thank you. Thank you, jack. You gave me a miracle. Thank you.

Jack: I felt the same way about kyle. When I found out he was my son, it was this amazing, unexpected surprise.

Phyllis: Yeah. It was an unexpected surprise.

[ Both laugh ] I’m glad we can talk like this and reminiscE. It makes me happy.

Jack: I remember you coming down those stairs…

Phyllis: Oh, my goodness.

Jack: …What, almost 20 years ago.

Phyllis: Yeah. Ah. That was lovely. Not just the ceremony. I mean the entire thing was…

Jack: What you got in the bag here?

Phyllis: Stay away from the gown!

Jack: I’m just gonna take a little peek.

Phyllis: No. No. No. Listen, go — go downstairs. Do something, alright? I have to get ready! I’m not even dressed.

Jack: Not so fast. Not so fast. Come here. You realize the next time we kiss we’re gonna be husband and wife?

Phyllis: [ Chuckling ] Yes. Mm-hmm. Are you getting cold feet?

Jack: Do I look like I’m getting cold feet?

Phyllis: I’m the luckiest woman on earth.

Jack: You literally took my breath away. (Vo) if you want to set the rhythm for a great day…

Nate: Now you see why i agreed to join victoria and ashland when I would have preferred to have you all to myself. I’m worried about the guy.

Elena: You are a really good man. Do you know that?

Nate: I try.

Elena: I wanted to be alone with you, too.

Nate: Look, you’ve been working so hard lately with the askmdnow gig on top of everything else. Wouldn’t you rather go unwind and catch up on some rest?

Elena: I know two things for sure. The first is that you are incredibly sweet and thoughtful. And the second is, if you leave now, I will never forgive you.

Nate: [ Laughs ] Hmm.

Jack: Oops. I’m about to be a fool again, dangling my heart on my sleeve.

Phyllis: Oh, my gosh, would you stop obsessing over that?

Jack: Boundaries were never my strong suit.

Phyllis: [ Laughs ] Listen. I already told you there’s a part of my heart that’ll never stop loving you. I just love spending time with you. That’s all.

Jack: Well, here’s to happiness.

[ Cellphone ringing ]

Phyllis: Mm. Oh! It’s nick.

Jack: Oh.

Phyllis: It’s nick. Hey, babe! Where are you?

Nick: I just got back to genoa city.

Phyllis: Oh, great! That’s fantastic. Nick is back. He’s back.

Nick: Yeah, I got something i got to do. Then I’ll meet up with the two of you.

Phyllis: Okay. What are you going to do?

Nick: I’m gonna get this out in the open.

Victoria: Just talk to me. Tell me — why did nicholas go to new jersey? Why is jesse gaines in genoa city? I don’t want to get these answers from anybody else. I want them from the man that I’m about to marry.

[ Cellphone chimes ] Well, go ahead and get that. Could be something important. Your brother is back. And he wants to meet.

Victoria: About what?

Ashland: We will soon find out.

Victoria: “We”? Healthy habits come in all sizes.

Phyllis: Ohh, okay. Good. Good. Oh, that’s a relief. So, nick is going to go to milan with us. I’m so glad that worked out.

Jack: Were you really that concerned?

Phyllis: I was. You never know what’s gonna happen with the planes and mechanical issues and, you know… but now we’re all gonna go together. I’m very happy.

Jack: You never said why nick went to new jersey. What made him take off just pbefore our trip when there was a chance he would be cutting it too close?

Phyllis: Yeah. I didn’t say anything, did I?

Jack: Okay, I can, uh — I can guess. Given what little you’ve told me about this, I would say it was probably about ashland locke.

Phyllis: Ashland locke? Why would you say that?

Jack: I spoke to billy earlier. He is absolutely convinced ashland is keeping a secret from everyone, a big enough secret that it might cause victoria to reconsider marrying him.

Phyllis: Mm. Well, billy is the king of wishful thinking.

Jack: Well, ordinarily, i would dismiss it as him trying to keep victoria from moving on, except nicholas also has his suspicions, and he would only be involved to protect his sister, to get proof before the wedding that she was marrying the wrong guy, if that proof exists.

Phyllis: Nick does know something. He has something. What victoria decides to do with it — that’s up to her. But, you know, nick then is gonna wash his hands of this. But let’s talk about the other wedding. Let’s put the focus on the wedding of our kids, okay? And by the way, I want to say thank you.

Jack: Thank you for what?

Phyllis: Thank you for postponing the jabot jet and holding off and making it so that nick could fly to milan with us. I really appreciate that. Thank you.

Jack: I’m glad it all worked out. We can all fly there together.

Billy: Nick, it’s billy. I know you’re out there looking for information on ashland. Please tell me you found the answers we both want.

[ Sighs ]

Nick: I was expecting to meet with you alone.

Ashland: Well, whatever you have to tell me, I want victoria to hear it, as well.

Victoria: Nicholas, you ignored my express wishes. You went digging around into ashland’s past. So — so, let’s hear it. What is this all about?

It’s just what is in my heart, but I — I’d hate to think that it would in any way get in the way of things with you and nick. Was nick okay?

Phyllis: Yeah. Yeah, he was okay. Um, he’s actually out of town right now. He’s, uh…doing a couple things before victoria’s wedding.

Jack: Oh, what seems to be the problem?

Phyllis: Oh, there’s no problem. Not at all. I think he’s just trying to surprise victoria with something, but that’s the thing is, um, I don’t know if he’ll be back in genoa city before we take off to go to milan, and he may just have to meet us there, fly from new jersey. He’s in new jersey.

Jack: If that happens, it would be just you and me on the jet.

Phyllis: Well, traci’s coming, right?

Jack: Traci is going to new york to meet with her agent now, so you and I would be flying to milan alone. Are you comfortable with that? You don’t get much time for yourself.

Phyllis: There is no situation in the world with you that would make me uncomfortable. I’d love to share a flight with you.

Jack: Good, I’m glad to hear that.

Phyllis: Yes, and by the way, I want to apologize for being suspicious regarding your intentions toward nick. I just — you just wanted to be honest.

Victoria: Hey.

Phyllis: Oh, hi.

Victoria: I was wondering if you had heard from nick.

Jack: Uh, you know, I’m gonna take that as my cue. I’m gonna keep moving. Um, nice to see you, victoria. Stay in touch with your travel plans.

Phyllis: Will do.

Victoria: I just heard that nick took the jet to new jersey. I want to know why.

Faith: Okay, you’re right. I haven’t been honest about why I’m backing out of our date. I’m sorry. I’m so embarrassed that I let this happen. I’m dying to go. I love spending time with you. And I feel awful that you spent all this time planning, but

[Sighs] I’ve fallen behind on my schoolwork.

Moses: Okay. Like, how behind?

Faith: Like, really behind. It was originally only a few classes, but then i procrastinated a couple of other assignments and now I have work due for practically every class.

Moses: Well, could you knock some of it out this afternoon and then finish the rest over the next few days?

Faith: [ Sighs ] I probably could’ve, but the school called my mom, so now…

Moses: I get it. Yeah, you can’t go on our date ’cause you need to finish your work.

Faith: This is all my fault. I don’t know how I got so behind. I feel terrible that I messed this up.

Moses: No, don’t blame yourself, when, actually, I’m to blame.

Faith: How could any of this possibly be your fault when I’m the one who has to finish three essays, a week of math, and a history project by tomorrow?

Moses: Because I’ve been the one who’s been keeping you from your work.

Faith: Yeah. Unfortunately, that’s what my mom thinks. That’s why I can’t go out with you until I’m all caught up. There’s just so much work. And I have a lot of it written down in my notebook, but it’s gonna take me hours just to type it all in. I may be a whiz at texting, but I am slow on a regular keyboard. I feel awful. I should’ve stayed on top of it. I’m sorry that I ruined everything.

Moses: No, you haven’T. And I may have a solution.

Adam: Thank you.

Jack: Adam.

Adam: Hey, jack.

Jack: Hey, I’ve just been thinking of you. I read a very complimentary article about you and newman media.

Adam: Well, I have to admit, it is nice to get a little good press. It’s a welcome change of pace.

Jack: I’m sure it is. Well, the article said the expansion’s going very well, and — how did they put it? — It is a business renaissance for adam newman.

Adam: Just a fancy way of saying I’ve gotten a do-over.

Jack: Well, fancy or not, it sounds like you’re turning things around, and I couldn’t be happier for you.

Adam: Well, connor is definitely one source of my inspiration. He makes me want to be a better man, so having him living with me again, it’s a daily reminder of that.

Jack: Isn’t it amazing how our kids can inspire us in great and unexpected ways?

Adam: Grateful for it every day.

Jack: Hey, speaking of family, are you going to be in tuscany for victoria’s big day?

Adam: It’s actually funny you should ask because I got an invitation today, but I’m sure it’s a mistake. Her wedding planner probably just sent out an invitation to everybody in the newman address book, so… victoria’s made it clear that i am persona non grata in italy.

Phyllis: I don’t have an answer for you. Nick is doing new hope business.

Victoria: Except that new hope doesn’t have any business in new jersey, at least not that I know of. But we both know who does. That’s where ashland got his start. Does this have anything to do with him?

Phyllis: Why are you suddenly suspicious of your brother? I mean, all he wants is the best for you and he wants you to be happy.

Victoria: There are a lot of people claiming to have my best interests at heart who are also trying to dig up dirt on ashland and make my — admittedly — whirlwind wedding even more stressful, and that includes my brother.

Phyllis: Wow, you know, don’t take this the wrong way, but isn’t this what they call, um, like, transference? You know, with everything that’s gone on, maybe what you’re doing is trying to push suspicion and target it somewhere else instead of the place it should be, which is on ashland, not your brother.

Victoria: That is ridiculous. But thank you so much for your dime-store psychoanalysis. I’ve got moderate to severe plaque psoriasis.

Lauren: Oh, my goodness, I am so sorry I’m late. I have a team of seamstresses hand-sewing the dress, and i literally had to pry it out of their hands.

Victoria: Thank you so much for coming over personally with it.

Lauren: Well, of course! I’m so excited to be involved. Oh, my goodness, this is going to be the dress of the season.

Victoria: Oh, I hope so.

Lauren: One of my favorite fashion designers has completely outdone herself. It is like nothing I have ever seen. I think you’re gonna love it.

Victoria: Well, I’ve only glimpsed at the sketches, but i think they look great.

Lauren: Well, then let’s see it on you, shall we? I’ve reserved a room upstairs for the fitting.

Phyllis: Here’s your key card. Room 600.

Lauren: Thank you.

Phyllis: You’re welcome. To be honest, I’m a little jealous. I only got to help summer with her dress through video chats, you know, so… anyway, I guess working for marchetti gets an embarrassment of riches. But I’m sure yours will look fine, too.

Victoria: And I’m sure that summer’s dress will be stunning.

Phyllis: Oh, I’m sure! If you want another set of eyes, I’m here.

Victoria: I’m sorry, phyllis. You haven’t exactly achieved bridesmaid status yet.

Phyllis: Well, okay. Room 600. Um, excuse me. I’m sorry, when are you gonna get this? You are not welcome at the grand phoenix ever.

Sally: Well, when are you gonna get that I am not going anywhere. I’m a part of this town, so get used to it.

Jack: You know, I’m not sure you should look at that wedding invitation as a mistake. Wedding’s have a funny way of bringing families together. Maybe victoria is impressed that you’ve turned over a new leaf.

Adam: As much as I am trying to be a better person, I don’t think victoria’s ready to accept me as a brother that she could love.

Jack: Well, perhaps your showing up at the wedding could go a long way toward making her understand you care.

Adam: Not sure that’ll work. Besides, I shouldn’t be away from connor for that long, and i don’t want to take him out of school. He’s just starting to get acclimated to walnut grove after being at boarding school. I don’t want to do anything to disrupt that.

Jack: Okay, I’m sure there are lots of things you need to consider. I’m sure you’ll do the right thing for connor and for yourself.

Adam: Trying my best.

Faith: I can’t imagine what solution you could have that would help me finish this amount of schoolwork, unless it involves stopping time.

Moses: We’ll do it together, and then we’ll get it done twice as fast.

Faith: Hmm. I appreciate the offer, but i can’t see how two people doing schoolwork together could cut the time in half.

Moses: Well, I’ve already done my homework.

Faith: Okay, but —

Moses: So that frees me up to help you. It’ll be two people tackling one mountain of work, and by my calculation, we’ll get it done in half the time.

Faith: Okay, but wouldn’t that be, like, cheating?

Moses: You said you had most of it written in your notebook already and you’re just a slow typist. It so happens that I’m wickedly fast on the keyboard, so I’ll just be transcribing what you’ve already done.

Faith: Then that wouldn’t be cheating. It’d be helping.

Moses: Exactly.

Phyllis: Sally, you’re standing in my hotel. Mine. Please, don’t make me get security to throw you out.

Sally: Oh. You want to cause a scene? Or should I say yet another scene at the grand phoenix? Let me just make sure that I get this one on video, so, uh…go aheaD.

Chloe: There you are. Oh, hi. I wanted sally to meet me here, and I am thrilled that you are here, too.

Phyllis: Well, that makes one of us.

Chloe: Let me change your mind. Sally and I came here because we have a business proposal for you.

Phyllis: I don’t have anything on my calendar.

Chloe: Well, we didn’t try to get an appointment because we knew you would say no.

Phyllis: Well, you have that right. Why would I do business with the very person who drove my daughter out of the country?

Sally: Oh, for pete’s sake, when are you gonna let that go? If summer really was that miserable in milan, she and kyle would’ve come back. The fact that she’s still there means one of two things — either she loves working at marchetti so much that she doesn’t want to leave or she just secretly hates being around you and she’s willing to move a thousand miles away to avoid running into you.

Chloe: Wait, wait, wait, wait. Sally — mnh-mnh. Okay, so she is clearly very passionate, which is exactly the kind of focus and energy that we want to put into our shoot that we want to do here.

Sally: The spread is for the new fashion platform, and it’s all about beauty, drama, and high style.

Chloe: Just picture the most stunning models in gorgeous fashion. We have an incredible photographer, a great stylist. It is such a win for our site and great publicity for the grand phoenix.

Phyllis: Well, you have that right. That’s a great idea. It really is. Spectacular, actually. Um…I love it. Fire her, and I’ll do it. Plaque psoriasis, the tightness, stinging…

Lauren: Oh. Wow. Now, remember, it’s not finished yet, but it’s fabulous. I mean, what do you think?

Victoria: I, um…I think it’s very pretty, but it’s not exactly what I pictured when i looked at the sketches.

Lauren: Oh. Okay. I mean, I understand how certain design elements don’t translate, but, you know, the fit is a little off. Um…let’s take it in in the bodice and, you know, adjust the pleats in front. Now, did you bring your shoes so we can hem it?

Victoria: No, I forgot.

Lauren: Oh, no problem. No problem. And I know we didn’t talk about a veil yet or headpieces, but don’t worry, I brought you a lot of options.

Victoria: Listen, lauren, it’s not your fault and it’s not the designer’s fault. I think that I’m just putting incredibly high standards on people because I have such high expectations for this wedding. I really, really want it to be something spectacular.

Lauren: And it will be. You deserve that, and I’m going to help you. We are going to fix this dress, and it will be worthy of the occasion. Don’t worry. We have the time.

Victoria: Yes, I know, I keep telling myself that, but…the day is just — it’s coming so soon and there’s just so much to do.

Lauren: I hear you. Could you give us a moment? Thank you. Are you sure the dress is the only thing that’s bothering you?

Victoria: Yes. Really.

Lauren: You know, I have helped a lot of powerful women design their dream gown, and when the garment doesn’t live up to their expectation, there’s usually a full-on freak-out by now.

Victoria: So my reaction wasn’t bridezilla enough for you?

Lauren: [ Laughs ] Wasn’t even baby-zilla.

[ Both laugh ] Look, you have a lot on your mind right now. It’s okay to take it out on the dress.

Victoria: Lauren, everything is fine.

Chloe: You really need to learn to keep a lid on iT.

Sally: I’m sorry. Phyllis just gets under my skin.

Chloe: Well, we came here to get something from her, and going after her like that just ensured that we failed.

Sally: Okay, but we might not have failed on all fronts.

Chloe: But we didn’t get the location for our shoot, so what other fronts are there?

Sally: Well, right before you got here, lauren and victoria went upstairs. There was a woman carrying a garment bag. How much you want to bet that that was victoria’s wedding gown?

Chloe: Yeah, that’s a pretty good theory, but I also assume that victoria turned you down when you offered to make her her dress.

Sally: I actually never got the chance to make the offer. I couldn’t set up a meeting. The woman turned me down three times, or rather, her assistant did.

Chloe: It was a one in a million shot anyway. Let it go.

Sally: I’m not giving up yet.

Chloe: You just said that you saw victoria going upstairs for a fitting. It sounds like the princess already got her gown.

Sally: Okay, well, letting things go is not how I’ve gotten where I am.

Chloe: Where you are? You have alienated half of genoa city. Your tainted reputation is going to take a very long time to repair.

Sally: Well, I may be able to quicken the pace if I offer victoria a wedding dress as a gift — and not just any wedding dress, but a one-of-a-kind masterpiece that will have everyone talking.

Chloe: I don’t think you trying to insinuate yourself into victoria newman’s wedding plans is the best strategy. It could very well blow up in your face and make things worse for you.

Moses: Alright. Let’s do this.

Faith: Okay, let me find my spot. “When it was lunchtime, we finished our dish, then we were given a huge bag to take home and a basket, as well. These two items that were given to us by the farmer and the rest of the people. Ms. Willington was being awed during the explanation the farmer gave us.”

[ Both laugh ] What’s another word for inflexible?

[ Sighs ] Oh, my god, we did it.

Moses: We sure did.

Faith: I never could’ve done it without your help. Even if we don’t do anything else tonight, this was the best date ever.

Moses: [ Chuckles ] You’re setting the bar pretty low.

Faith: [ Laughs ] I guess you’re right.

Moses: So, are you ready for the real date?

Faith: No.

Moses: What’s wrong now?

Faith: I have to go home and change. This is a special occasion. I can’t go out like this.

Moses: [ Chuckles ] You look beautiful just the way you are now. But I’ll come and pick you up in an hour. You can tell your mom and rey that I’ll have you back by curfew.

Faith: Smooth move.

Moses: I have my moments.

Devon: [ Clears throat ] Hey. Did you get everything put away?

Amanda: Yes.

Devon: Yeah?

Amanda: Thank you for leaving me all that space in the closets.

Devon: Oh, absolutely. Abby gave me some advice. She said if you ever ask a woman to come live with you, you have to give her at least equal or more closet space.

Amanda: Ooh, wise words.

Devon: Yeah. Would you some tea or something to eat? I have earl grey and biscotti.

Amanda: Almond?

Devon: Of course.

Amanda: [ Chuckles ] Did abby tell you to buy all of my favorite foods, too?

Devon: No, she didn’T. That’s all me.

Amanda: Well, I’m actually not hungry.

Devon: Okay.

Amanda: Not even for my favorite things, but I do want to do one of my favorite things. Hang out with you.

[ Both laugh ]

Devon: We can do that. – Bedtime!! – Bedtime.

[ Knock on door ]

Victoria: What are you doing here?

Adam: Good to see you, too. I guess my initial instinct was right — the wedding invitation was a mistake. So just pretend I never came by.

Victoria: No, wait, wait. It wasn’t a mistake. I’m sorry that your invite was late in coming.

Adam: Why the change of heart? Is it possible that things can warm up a bit a between us from whatever sub-arctic temperature we’re at now?

Victoria: I wouldn’t go that far. I’m inviting you because of our father.

Adam: He asked you to?

Victoria: He didn’t need to. We both know how important family is to him, and that includes you, too.

Adam: [ Chuckles ]

Victoria: Apparently, this new and improved adam is lasting a lot longer than I thought it would. You must be in the middle of some “renaissance” or something.

Adam: You read the article.

Victoria: I just thought it would be a nice way to say thank you to dad for being so supportive of the locke merger and my marriage to ashland. He even gave his blessing for the new portrait.

Adam: [ Clears throat ] Well, I’m not sure how the hell you got him to do that, but kudos.

Victoria: I know that nothing would make our father happier than to have his entire family at the wedding. And as much as I hate to inflate your ego any more, ashland has a certain respect for you. He admires the way that you stepped up and took over newman media, despite the fact that most of the world despises you.

Adam: Thank you?

Victoria: So, what do you think?

Adam: I mean, you genuinely want me there?

Victoria: I wouldn’t push it, if I were you. I’m not going to beg you. You and I both know that i personally do not want you there.

Adam: Uh-huh, I got it. You know, I thought I would be doing you a favor by not attending, but then it occurred to me that, after all the years of trying to get you to include me in your life, you finally opened a door, so it would be a mistake not to go. Not to mention, rude, regardless of what the motivation was behind the invite.

Victoria: So is that a yes?

Adam: Yes. I’d like to make dad happy, too, but I can see that this wedding is important to you, so that is reason enough to be there to witness it.

Victoria: You know, it’s kind of weird that you’re being so thoughtful. I might have to upgrade you from the kiddie table.

Adam: Oh, I could sit at the one for business associates or weird single people.

Victoria: [ Chuckles ] This doesn’t mean that we’re friends.

Adam: I’ll settle for family. Got to start somewhere.

Sally: So, when are you meeting with adam?

Chloe: In a few minutes.

Sally: Okay. Take a look at this dress. Tell me this would not look amazing on victoria.

Devon: [ Chuckles ] Yeah. I mean, I think that’s an important boundary to keep. I’m seeing how hard this has all been for mariah.

Devon: Just knowing how much she’s struggling through everything is — worries me and it shows me how hard it can be if you let yourself get overly attached. And yet, you know…

Crystal: Mr. Gaines has checked out.

Billy: Really? When?

Crystal: I’m not sure. It just says his bill is paid and zeroed out.

Billy: You weren’t here when he checked out by chance, were you? He didn’t leave a forwarding address?

Crystal: I only know that mr. Gaines left. No other details.

Billy: Seems odd that a man would just suddenly disappear.

[ Sighs ] Thank you, crystal.

Victor: Are you just gonna stand there and stare at me or there’s something you want to say?

Billy: Just surprised to see you here again.

Victor: Uh-huh.

Billy: Or maybe you haven’t left. Either way, it seems weird that you would spend this much time in phyllis’ establishment. You got a meeting by chance? Yes, I do have a meeting. Thank you for asking. Jesse gaines. Does that name ring a bell?

Victor: It sounds like the name of your bookie.

Billy: He’s not here. He’s supposed to be staying here, but he checked out. And yet you are here. I have a hunch that’s not a coincidence.

Victor: [ Chuckles ]

Ashland: Okay, gaines. I was at the agreed-upon meeting place and you were a no-show, and now you’re not taking my calls. Would you stop playing these silly games? And listen to me, you better not be reneging on our deal because that would be extremely foolish and short-sighted of you. Do you hear me? Looking forward to getting together so we can clear this up. Okay? Thanks. Call me.

Victoria: Sounds like someone’s in trouble.

Ashland: Why would you say that?

Victoria: Well, I can tell by your tone that you’re not too pleased with someone.

Ashland: Oh, certain people in my company are not adjusting as well as I would like to the merger.

Victoria: So why not just cut them loose?

Ashland: Well, it’s not as simple as that. This person in particular has been with the organization for quite a long time, and he is the holder of a lot of the institutional knowledge that we really can’t afford to lose right now. I mean, you know how it is.

Victoria: No. Quite frankly, I don’T. And the reason that I don’t is because you’re being deliberately vague. And I have to say, that concerns me, because, once again, it feels like you’re hiding something.

Abby: Shh. Dominic, hey, baby, what’s wrong? Shh. Oh, baby. Shh, shh, shh, shh, shh, shh. It’s okay, it’s okay. Well, you just ate and you’re not wet. Oh, what’s wrong? Shh. Why don’t you tell mommy what’s the matter? Shh.

Mariah: [ Sighs ]

Tessa: “Mariah, went out to pick up a few things, text if you need anything.”

Mariah: Oh. How did this get in here?

[ Groaning ]

Abby: Oh, my god.

Devon: Good job.

Abby: He’s here. He’s here. Mariah, you did it.

Devon: Good job, good job. Wow. It feels so different, holding you out here in my arms than it did when you were inside of me. I can’t believe how natural it feels, holding you.

Abby: Hi. Where have you been?

Mariah: Oh, uh, bowie — sorry — uh, dominic was crying his head off, and I had no idea what to do. So I called the pediatrician, and he said that going out for a walk might help. And look. It worked.

Sharon: Hey, tessa. It’s good to see you. Will mariah be joining you?

Tessa: No, she’s taking a walk, but I thought I would take the opportunity to check in with you.

Sharon: Oh, well, I’m glad you did. Mariah asked me to give her some space, and I’m trying really hard to keep my word, but it’s difficult to stay away.

Tessa: I know, but thank you for respecting her wishes.

Sharon: Well, I mean, it sounds like she’s getting out on her own and getting some exercise. That’s positive.

Tessa: Yeah, yeah, she’s definitely in better spirits.

Sharon: Well, that’s the best news I’ve heard all day. Moving out of the chancellor house, just putting some physical distance between her and the baby, that was probably a good instinct on her part. Maybe she’s getting some emotional distance, as well.

Tessa: Yeah, I’m not so sure about that. I’ve lost count of how many asthma attacks I’ve had.

Billy: [ Sighs ] You’re here for a reason, victor. This isn’t your stomping ground. You’re more of a society guy because your daughter owns that place. So why are you here?

Ashland: I’m not trying to hide anything, sweetheart, and if I sounded vague, it’s because I had the situation well in hand and there’s nothing for you to worry about.

Victoria: You know, i honestly thought that when you revealed the truth about your past and I took it all in stride, that you would realize that it’s wise to be open with me. There’s nothing that you have to hide from me. I’m not gonna judge you or reject you, no matter what it is.

Ashland: [ Sighs ]

Victoria: I want you to know that you can come to me with whatever’s bothering you. And you’re gonna have an ally in me. I mean, I’m gonna be your wife. That’s the point of this whole marriage thing, at least from my perspective. So…let’s just start this conversation over again. Tell me, what was that phone call really about? Who were you talking to?

Nikki: Victoria, I have terrific news. Oh, I’m sorry. I — am I interrupting something?

Sharon: So, mariah’s new plan for getting over dominic is to start a family with you? Are you ready for that?

Tessa: Well, I mean, we talked about it before as something we would consider in the future, eventually.

Sharon: But mariah wants to speed up the schedule.

Tessa: I could use some advice on how to approach this with mariah without upsetting her.

Sharon: Well, first, you need to decide if having a baby is something that you’re ready for and that you want right now, something that you would be ready to just jump into.

Tessa: Yeah, but it’s not just about what I want. Look, it’s pretty obvious that this idea is not coming from healthy or grounded place, but the fantasy seems to be lifting mariah’s spirits. You know, it’s given her something to hold on to. And I don’t want to take that away from her. I just — I also don’t want to make any promises that I might not be able to keep. I don’t know — what do I do? How do I handle this? I just — I don’t know what to say to her.

[ Knock on door ]

Mariah: Hey, devon. Come on in.

Devon: Thank you, thank you. I was just thinking about you and tessa, and I wanted to stop by and see how you’re doing.

Mariah: Um, yeah, we’re good.

Devon: Yeah?

Mariah: I guess. I know it must have seemed like I was freaking out the day of the baptism.

Devon: Nah, no, nobody thought that you were freaking out at all. You’re just taking care of yourself, which is what we all want you to do. But we have been thinking about you.

Mariah: By “we,” do you mean you and abby? Have you guys been discussing the state of my mental health?

Devon: [ Chuckles ] Well, no, I mean, it’s — you know how abby can get. She always wants everybody to be happy, and if they’re not, she’ll figure out how to feel responsible for them.

Mariah: So you’re saying that, because this has been hard on me, it’s also been hard on abby.

Devon: What I’m saying, mariah, is that we’re all just trying to figure this out together. You know? And we’re probably gonna fumble our way through it ’cause this is a new experience for everybody. We’ve never been in a situation like this before, none of us. I mean, hell, I’m not even sure what my role in dominic’s life is gonna be.

Who’s on it with jardiance?

Ashland: Nikki, no, good lord, you’re not interrupting at all. I suppose you have some good news about the wedding?

Nikki: Well, yes. As you know, we have confirmed tessa to sing, but I have just made arrangements with leslie brooks to play during the ceremony.

Ashland: Oh, that’s very impressive. I remember you telling me she’s an old friend of the family. I can’t wait. If you’ll excuse me, there’s some things I need to tend to.

Victoria: Ashland, we haven’t finished our conversation. Can you stay just a minute?

Nikki: I am sorry. I will give you your privacy back.

Ashland: No, no, no, that’s alright. Victoria and I can finish up later. I have to get out of here to make some calls before it gets too late overseas. I’ll see you. Love you. Good to see you, nikki.

Nikki: You too. Sweetheart, is everything alright?

Victoria: Of course.

Sharon: What have you said to mariah about her idea to have a baby?

Tessa: Well, I couldn’t hide how shocked I was. And to be perfectly honest, I’m not sure how I feel. And I’m sure mariah picked up on that. But she seems pretty convinced that this is the right idea for her.

Sharon: And she’s hoping that you’ll just come around?

Tessa: Well, like I said, I’m not opposed to the general idea, but I don’t know if I’m ready. And after everything mariah’s gone through, I don’t think she is either.

Sharon: I would follow that instinct. I think that mariah’s sudden drive to have this baby is just not coming from the right place or a healthy place. She’s grieving right now, and she’s trying to fill a void.

Tessa: It’s like she’s reaching out for something, anything to make the ache in her heart go awaY. And if it’s helping her, making plans and daydreaming, is there any harm letting it go on just a little longer?

Sharon: Although it’s well-intended, I still think it’s a bad idea because mariah is gonna get her heart set on this vision of you two having a family in the future, and then if she gets that taken away from her, too…

Tessa: Yeah. That would be pretty harsh.

[ Sighs ] I don’t know, it’s just all so sudden.

Sharon: You have to find a way to tell her this.

Tessa: Yeah. You’re right. But it is not gonna be easy.

Sharon: It won’t be. But I think that mariah will understand.

Devon: Holding that little baby for the first moments of his life was the single most amazing experience of mine. And the connection that i already feel with him, I know it’s just gonna get stronger, and I know that chance is his father, I’m his godfather, but it’s not that simple, as you well know.

Mariah: Have you shared any of this with abby.

Devon: Nah. I haven’t shared any of it with her because I figure she’s got enough on her plate.

Mariah: Do you think i shouldn’t have either?

Devon: I’m not saying that at all, no. I think that you were in a completely different situation because you were living under the same roof with her and the baby, so I get it, you needed the separation.

Mariah: How did everything get so out of control?

Devon: I don’t think that anything got out of control, really, it’s just we need to let time go by and let things settle into place, and for me, that’s, you know, gonna be when chance comes back home.

Mariah: Maybe so.

Devon: But hey, how are you really doing? ‘Cause, you know, if you’re still feeling unsafe or anything like that, I can hire security for you.

Mariah: Thank you, devon.

Devon: Of course, of course. Although I’m sure stitch and his son are long gone by now.

Mariah: Yeah, you’re probably right. Um, you know, right now I’m not too worried about it. Although if they called me and told me that they found stitch and he had been locked away, i would be incredibly relieved.

Devon: Yeah. I know that would go a long way towards you putting all this behind you.

Mariah: Yeah. But tessa and I are trying to figure out other ways for me to heal.

Devon: Good.

Mariah: And, you know, i think we’ve — we’ve got a plan. It’s nothing concrete yet, it’s just sort of in the inspiration phase.

Devon: Yeah? That’s great.

Mariah: There’s no news to report, but if there is, I’ll let you know.

Devon: That’s fine. I’m not gonna pry at all. I’m just happy to hear that you’re hopeful about the future.

Mariah: I am. I am incredibly excited about where tessa and I are going. So, the next time you talk to abby, you can tell her that I am well on the road to recovery.

Devon: Alright. I brought in ensure max protein, with thirty grams of protein.

Abby: Hey, come on in. Hey. That’s perfect timing. I actually just got dominic down for his nap.

Devon: Oh, man, I was hoping I could spend some time with him.

Abby: Really?

Devon: Yeah.

Devon: No, no, not at all. I came to check on the new mama, too.

Abby: Thank you.

Devon: Of course, of course. I know you’ve had your hands full lately. Has dominic been keeping you up?

Abby: Uh, yeah, he’s definitely a night owl, but I’m not complaining because when i just look at his face, even though it’s 3:00 A.M., But he’s smiling at me, that little grin, ugh!

Devon: Yeah.

Abby: It’s gonna be burned in my memory forever.

Devon: Aw, I bet it is.

Abby: I’m sorry, I’m a little groggy today, so bear with me.

Devon: That’s okay.

Abby: Is there anything new going on with you?

Devon: Uh, yeah, I do have some news. I asked amanda to move in with me.

Abby: Oh, my gosh! Wow!

Devon: Yeah.

Abby: Well, that’s not just news, that’s great news. I want to hear all about it. When? Where? What did you say? More importantly, what did she say?

Devon: Well, she’s —

[ Dominic crying ] Uh-oh.

Abby: Sorry. Stay right here. I’ll be back. Just give me like two minutes.

Devon: Of course.

Rey: Hey, babe.

Sharon: Oh, hey. Uh, I wasn’t expecting to see you until tonight.

Rey: Well, I finished my shift early, and now I am all yours. Thought we could do something fun and hang out, whatever you like.

Sharon: I am so glad you’re here. I need you to save me from myself.

Nikki: And as soon as our lawyers file the documents, the deal should go through.

Victoria: Oh, problem solved. Thank you, mom.

Nikki: Now that that is out of the way, you can go join your fiancé. I’m sure he’s finished with his phone calls by now.

Victoria: That’s okay. I will see him at home later. It’s not like we were discussing anything urgent anyway.

Nikki: Victoria, you know how much I hate to meddle or argue.

Victoria: Right.

Nikki: It is very clear that something is on your mind. You’re concerned about something. Now, if you want to talk about it, I’m a good listener.

Victoria: What I said earlier, about ashland feeling that he was safe, that he could tell me anything, I think I may have spoken too soon.

Nikki: Oh, no. He’s still keeping something from you?

Victoria: He just seems worried, like something’s wrong, but for some reason, he’s compelled to pretend like everything’s fine.

Nikki: Maybe it has something to do with the merger.

Victoria: No, no, because that — that’s going well. Maybe this has something to do with billy. Maybe he’s continuing his little harassment campaign.

Nikki: Oh, well, I have no doubt that billy is still investigating. And he may not be the only one. Ashland has lived this false identity for so long, I wouldn’t be surprised if other reporters and investigators are digging into his past.

Victoria: But ashland says that he hasn’t shared with anyone but us that he changed his identity, and I believe him.

Nikki: That doesn’t mean someone else hasn’t already figured it out on their own.

Billy: If you’re looking for gaines, he checked out. I’m assuming that’s who you came to see again.

Victor: Ashland! Thanks for meeting me today.

Ashland: Victor, forgive me for running late.

Victor: That’s alright. Table in the restaurant is waiting.

Billy: I hope it’s a table for three. Got a few questions for the both of you.

Victor: [ Laughs ] You’re a pest, billy boy.

Ashland: Well, you seem to forget that victor and I are more than just colleagues. We’re about to become family.

Billy: Oh, I haven’t forgotten that. Not by a long shot.

Ashland: So why all the suspicion? I mean, we’re simply here to grab a drink and talk about wedding plans. Surely you want no part of that conversation, since you made it obvious that you have great regrets about letting victoria get away.

Victor: You know, ashland, perhaps meeting here was a mistake, so why don’t we adjourn to my ranch where we have some privacy?

Ashland: Excellent idea.

Billy: Yeah, excellent idea. I’m sure you have fond memories of when you almost died of a heart attack and victor sat there and watched you the entire time.

Victor: Incorrigible, aren’t you, huh? Why don’t take a long walk off a short cliff?

Billy: [ Sighs ]

Abby: I am so sorry. You’re gonna have to give me the scoop about amanda moving in another time. Dominic’s just having a hard time settling in for his nap. It’s funny, they tell new moms to sleep when the baby sleeps, but no one really tells you what to do when the baby just doesn’t sleep.

Devon: Oh, boy. Well, hey, why don’t — why don’t you let me take him for a walk or something like that and you can get some rest?

Abby: Oh, no, no, that’s okay. I wouldn’t want to impose.

Devon: You’re not imposing. I just offered. I’d love to do it.

Abby: Really? I mean…

Devon: Yes.

Abby: I am pretty exhausted. Are you sure you don’t mind?

Devon: Hey, come on, I don’t mind at all.

Abby: Oh, got him?

Devon: Yeah. Oh, there we go.

Devon: There you go. How you want to — how would you like to go for a walk with your godfather? You hear that? He loves the idea.

Mariah: You were gone for a while. Where’d you go?

Tessa: Oh, I went to our place to grab some mail. We got victoria’s wedding invitation. Elegant.

Mariah: What a nice touch. It’s almost as if we’re actually invited guests and not just going because you’re singing at the wedding.

Tessa: Yeah, I know, right? But I am so excited for this trip. It’s exactly what we need — a change of scenery. Ugh, I saw photos of the palazzo, and it is absolutely gorgeous. And with nikki planning the wedding, it is going to be exquisite down to the tiniest detail.

Mariah: Yeah, I’m excited for the trip, too. And, you know, maybe we can even make plans with summer and kyle after the wedding.

Tessa: Mm-hmm. Well, I do hope that kyle was understanding about how you couldn’t be the best person at his wedding.

Mariah: Yes, he was. I explained everything that happened to him. You know, this italy trip, i think it’s gonna be the perfect opportunity to just have a little fun before we settle down, you know? And it’s not like you can’t travel with babies. I mean, people do it all the time. You know what I mean.

Tessa: Uh, yeah, yeah, I do. And I think we need to talk about that.

Mariah: Oh! Devon was here earlier, and i was so tempted to tell him that we’re talking about having a baby. I mean, he’s gonna be thrilled for us. And imagine if he and amanda want to have kids, and then our baby and devon’s baby and bowie, they could all grow up together.

Tessa: Mariah, I… I think you’re getting ahead of yourself here. Or at — at least you’re getting ahead of me.

Mariah: Oh.

Tessa: Don’t get me wrong. I want to raise a family together. But we need to have some serious discussions before we make this decision, and I know that you’re ready to jump in with both feet right now…

Mariah: But you’re not.

Tessa: Not yet. I don’t want to rush this. We need to make sure that we are both fully prepared to take this on. It’s a life-changing move.

Mariah: I get it. I get it, I do. I just got excited at the idea of raising a child of our own.

Rey: What’s going on? Why do you need me to save you?

Sharon: It’s all I can do to stop myself from running over to the grand phoenix and mothering mariah to death, whether she wants me to or not.

Rey: She knows you’re here for her.

Sharon: She’s just been through so much. She barely had time to get over one trauma before she got hit with the next. And tessa was just here. She made it sound like mariah’s really struggling.

Rey: You know the best thing you could’ve done is gotten closer to tessa while mariah went missing.

Sharon: Why do you say that?

Rey: Because it’s already paying off. Tessa feels comfortable coming to you for advice now, and I bet you’ll be the first person she comes to if there’s a real emergency that needs your attention.

Sharon: Yeah. It’s a good point.

Rey: In the meantime, I have some suggestions to keep yourself occupied.

Sharon: You do? Okay. You know what? I’m all ears.

 

Devon: Hey, dominic. You know where we are? We are in chancellor park now. And this is a very, very special place because it is named after one of the most special women that you would ever know. Her name was katherine chancellor. She was my grandma, which means she’s your great-grandma. That’s right. Growing up, you’re getting a lot of stories about her and about all the people in your family that helped build this town. Yeah. There you go. Gosh. You got the newmans. You got the abbotts. You have the chancellors. You have the winters. Neil winters was my dad. And I — I really, really wish that you could meet him. He would love you so, so much. My point is, though, you got a lot of roots, dude. You got so much heritage here. You’re gonna grow up strong and you’re gonna grow up secure and you will never question that you belong here, ever. I think that’s pretty cool. You’re a very lucky little dude.

Sharon: You are wearing the shirt you bought in miami. Reminds me of our honeymoon.

Rey: Ah. So you remember.

Sharon: Well, how could i forget? And isn’t this the song that we danced to on the last night we were there? I don’t think that’s a coincidence.

Rey: Oh, you know, I’m a detective, so there are no coincidences as far as I’m concerned. And the menu for tonight has also been designed to evoke honeymoon memories. Mojitos, papas rellenas, tostones, y ropa vieja.

Sharon: Wow. You really thought of everything, didn’t you? I don’t know if you’ll be able to top this date ever.

Rey: [ Chuckles ] You just hold on. We’re just getting started.

Billy: Hello, there. Nice to see you both outside the office during business hours.

Nikki: We’re just taking a little break.

Billy: Well, that’s nice. Victoria, I just ran into your fiancé at the grand phoenix.

Victoria: Ran into him or tracked him down?

Billy: Believe me, it was a coincidence. Apparently, we had a meeting with the same guy at the same time — jesse gaines. I’m assuming ashland mentioned him to you. It’s his lawyer — or former lawyer, I guess. He’s in town for a few days.

Victoria: I really don’t know why you think I’d be interested.

Billy: I know you pretty well. I can tell you’re trying to cover the fact that you haven’t heard that name before. I’m surprised ashland hasn’t mentioned him.

Victor: Would you care for a drink?

Ashland: No, not for me right now. Thank you.

Victor: Well, then, have a seat.

Ashland: You know, i appreciate you running interference for me with billy. I can handle him myself, of course, but his constant suspicions at every turn get to be a bit much.

Victor: Don’t worry about it. I took care of it for you, okay?

Ashland: Well, I hope that that proves to be true. I’d love to believe it, but i think billy is bound and determined to be a thorn in my side.

Victor: Well, ashland, I’m not talking about billy boy abbott, I’m talking about jesse gaines. I know that billy would have brought him up to you. But I took care of that problem. Would you care for a drink now?

Rey: Don’t you peek or you’ll ruin the surprise.

Sharon: Mmm. I feel like I’ve traveled back in time to the botanical garden we visited in florida. But where would you get tropical flowers in the middle of fall and in genoa city, no less?

Rey: Open your eyes.

Sharon: [ Gasps ]

Rey: Every time you wear that, we’ll be transported back to that magical time. That way, our honeymoon in miami never ends.

Sharon: This really is the perfect date. The tastes, the sounds, and the scents of miami. But I have one more honeymoon surprise for you when we get home.

Rey: Oh, yeah? What’d I forget?

Sharon: I will give you a hint.

Rey: Hmm.

Sharon: I’ll be wearing nothing but this.

Victoria: What is your point, billy? Ashland and my mother and I are running a multinational conglomerate. Do you really think that we have the time to give each other a rundown of who we speak to in the course of a day?

Billy: Jesse gaines is a man that you need to know.

Victoria: I don’t care, billy! I don’t know how I need to say this to you to make you understand to back off. Leave me alone. Leave ashland alone. Stay the hell out of our lives.

Ashland: I’m not sure what you’re getting at. Jesse gaines is nobody. He’s an old acquaintance that i recently got back in touch with.

Victor: Hmm. Have that drink, ashland. Well, from what I gather, jesse gaines collected $300,000 a year from you for decades, without doing a damn thing. Seems to me was some kind of an extortion racket, right? But don’t worry about that anymore. I took care of it, you know? I offered him a lot of money to stay away from you. So consider that a wedding gift.

Ashland: Did gaines come to you asking for money?

Victor: No, no, no. No, I sought him out.

Ashland: Oh.

Victor: And I told him that he had a choice to make. He would either go to prison for blackmail or accept my very generous offer.

Ashland: What did he say about our history?

Victor: Well, that didn’t make any difference, really. I didn’t care what he had to say.

Ashland: Well, how would you know unless you heard him out?

Victor: Ashland, you and i are really not that dissimilar, are we? We both had rough backgrounds, you know. Used our elbows a lot, pushed people around, right? We did things that we probably would regret now. But it made us who we are today. And I’m a firm believer in letting bygones be bygones.

Ashland: Victor, I hope you know that you — you can’t trust gaines to keep his word. He won’t be satisfied no matter how generous you were.

Victor: I know that. I’m keeping an eye on him.

Ashland: I don’t know what to say.

Victor: There’s nothing to say, you know? I just want you to know that this is not something I did for you. I did this for victoria. I adore her. And she has never been as happy as she is today. That’s because of you, and i would like it to stay that way.

Ashland: So do I.

Victor: Great. Now, having said that, I want you to know that what I’ve done today I can undo in the blink of an eye. You get my drift?

Ashland: That I do. And you have no reason to worry.

Victor: Good.

Ashland: All I want is to make victoria as happy as she has made me.

Victor: Well, now, as long as it stays that way, you have nothing to worry about. Cheers.
