Steve and Kayla talked about the drug that could save Bo and how Dr. Russell didn’t want Kayla to use it. She said she tried to find something else that could help Bo, but she couldn’t find anything. From a doctor’s standpoint, she understood where Dr. Russell was coming from but from a sister’s standpoint, she couldn’t accept that. She said she gave Shawn hope for a miracle drug and didn’t want to have to tell him it was for nothing. When Kayla was about to call Shawn, Stephanie showed up. Stephanie noticed something was wrong, so Steve and Kayla told her what was going on with Bo. They said there was no word on John. Shawn and Jada went to the pub for breakfast. He thought she was staying with him to make sure he didn’t fall off the wagon. When Philip showed up, Shawn told him about Bo. He told Philip that it wasn’t good news but there was a miracle drug that could save him. While Shawn was talking to Philip about the drug, Kayla called him to tell him what happened with the drug. Shawn felt like there was no hope left but wished there was a way to get to Dr. Russell. Jada said she had to meet with Paulina. When Jada left, Shawn called Steve. He told Steve that he figured out a way to save Bo and needed his help to do it. Steve met with Shawn to talk about the plan.

Shawn told Steve about his plan to steal the drug from Dr. Russell. He said Dr. Russell couldn’t be blamed, and Bo could be saved. Steve said it was a good plan but wanted to do it on his own. Gabi yelled at Leo for going through her purse. While Gabi was yelling at Leo, Javi came in. Gabi said she wanted Leo to move out immediately because he was a thief and accused him of stealing Rafe’s memory card. She told Javi that she wanted Leo out of the house. Javi said he would go if Leo left. Gabi said she didn’t want to lose him. Javi told her there was no proof that Leo stole the memory card. Gabi took Javi with her so they could go to the office. When they left, Leo wrote down the suspects in EJ’s shooting. He still believed Gabi was the shooter. When Gabi and Javi got to her office, Philip was at her desk. Philip said his office at Titan was being renovated. Gabi wanted him out of her office and ripped into him. When Javi tried to calm her down, Gabi wasn’t pleased. An upset Javi walked away from her. Philip advised Gabi to be nicer to her family. She reminded him about his dysfunctional family. Philip left to take a phone call. Gabi threw his laptop in the garbage. Alex went to the Kiriakis mansion and saw Xander finding ways to get rid of Philip. Xander wanted to find a way to get rid of Philip that wouldn’t be bad for business. Alex said he could count on him, but Xander didn’t trust him. He apologized to Xander and said he would earn his trust back. Xander left to find a file. Javi went home and found Leo working on a top-secret story. When Javi looked at Leo’s suspect list, he was upset that Gabi’s name was on it. Javi told Leo not to go after his family to which Leo said he couldn’t do that. Leo said he wouldn’t take advantage of being in his home to which Javi said was good enough for him. Javi told him that he wasn’t sure if he could keep working and living with Gabi. Leo suggested that he quit. Mr. Shin called Xander with bad news. He said Xander had to keep working with Philip. Mr. Shin told him that the fraud could never come out. Shawn told Steve that he couldn’t let him do the plan on his own. Steve agreed to let Shawn help.

At the pub, Xander talked to Sarah about not wanting to work with Philip. He said he didn’t know if he could keep Philip’s antics a secret for much longer. Xander said he didn’t like lying and thought the truth coming out would hurt the business. Sarah understood and thought he was doing it to protect his family. While they were talking, he brought up their anniversary and told her he wanted to make it special for her. She agreed to go. Before they left for work, Sarah let Xander know that he and Victoria were her world and everything she did was for them. Holly talked to Doug about wanting to tell Maggie the truth about him being there, but Doug didn’t think she should say anything yet. He thought he would get a job soon and could pay for his own place. Holly agreed not to say anything and went out to get something to eat. Doug got a call about a job interview. When he was about to leave, he saw Maggie and Philip together. Philip said he was there to get his things. Doug listened at the door. Maggie ripped into Philip for lying about the inheritance and Victor’s last wishes. Philip said his father always wanted him to be part of his legacy. Maggie yelled at him for not doing it legally. She wanted him to be out of the house before anyone got home. When Doug thought the coast was clear, he came out only to be caught by Philip. He asked who Doug was. Doug told him what happened. He told Philip that Holly was the only other one who knew. Philip promised not to say anything. He told Doug that he wouldn’t lie for him, but he wouldn’t say anything to anyone.

At the hospital, Maggie talked to Julie who said she was volunteering. Julie told her she was struggling since losing Doug and then Doug’s grandson. Maggie said she missed Doug III and reminded Julie that she used to steal. She told Julie that she wasn’t telling her forgive Doug, but people made mistakes. Julie wasn’t willing to change her mind and said she didn’t know or care where he was. They reminded each other that they both lost their husbands. When Julie went home, Sarah showed up to talk to Maggie. Maggie told her that she was staying out of Philip’s way while he moved out of the house. Sarah told her that she decided not to tell Xander the truth. Chanel panicked when Johnny brought up the adoption. She thought Amy changed her mind about it. He said he was the one who wasn’t sure he wanted to go through with it. Johnny said he felt lost and couldn’t be a father now. He said he didn’t think the adoption would go through so he didn’t think he needed to say anything. Chanel said she understood and thought they could work it out. Johnny said he didn’t think he could and felt it wasn’t fair to do that to Tate and Sophia. Chanel wanted him to lean on her because she wanted to raise the baby. Johnny said he didn’t trust himself after what his father did. He said he was afraid he could turn out like his father. She said that wasn’t true because he was a good person with a good heart. When Johnny wasn’t convinced, she asked about what she needed. She said he was breaking her heart. Tate and Sophia showed up to give them a scrapbook. They wondered if everything was okay with Johnny and Chanel. Johnny told Tate and Sophia that he and Chanel wouldn’t be adopting their baby. Sophia didn’t understand what was going on. Johnny told her things changed and he wasn’t ready to be a father. Sophia ran away. Tate went after her. Chanel cried. At the town square, Doug answered the phone and found out he still owed money to the guys he paid off. The guys knew he was staying at the Kiriakis mansion. At Titan, Philip found Xander in his office and tried apologizing again but it didn’t do any good. Xander said he wouldn’t do anything to him because of the takeover deal. He warned Philip that he would push him out. Chanel yelled at Johnny for not giving her a chance before he called off the adoption. She wanted him to go back to the mansion because she couldn’t look at him. When Johnny left, Chanel broke down and cried.

Susan wanted EJ to get back in the bed. He was reading his tablet, but she wanted him to rest. EJ didn’t want to rest. He told her about the tension between him and Johnny. Johnny refused to come to him so EJ had to find a way to make amends with him. EJ would be fine once he got back home. Susan was scared that his shooter was still out there. Johnny was on the DiMera couch. He thought about Chanel kicking him out of Abe and Paulina’s place. Johnny wondered what he did, and Paulina questioned it too. She demanded that he make things right with Chanel. Paulina knew he was in pain, but he couldn’t blame himself for his father’s sins. Johnny corrected her and told her that he was his father’s sin. A strong woman could help him get past it. She thought he should fight for his marriage and his future. EJ took enough from him. Susan arrived at the DiMera mansion to talk to Johnny. She let him know that EJ wanted to see him, but he was focused on fixing things with Chanel. Chanel saw Cat and Felicity at the town square. Felicity mentioned the adoption to Chanel, but she stormed off. Chanel came back and told her that she wouldn’t be a mother after all. Paulina arrived so Cat and Felicity left. She told her daughter how Johnny was feeling miserable about what happened. Chanel let her know that they were talking about the adoption for weeks. She told her that he never brought up not wanting to adopt the baby. Chanel had a chance to be a mother, but Johnny stopped the process without talking to her about it. The movie he made was something EJ would do. She didn’t know how she would get past everything that happened. Paulina assured her that things would get better. She and Johnny had to lean on each other. Paulina wanted her to forgive Johnny and move on from what happened.

Kayla was on the phone with Kimberly and assured her that she and Bo would beat the odds. Dr. Jeffrey Russell knocked on her door. Kayla told him that she needed his help. She told him about the sepsis treatment that he was working on and said the drug could save her brother’s life. He didn’t expect it. Dr. Russell told her that the drug hadn’t been tested on animals yet. It’s too early for experimental treatments. Kayla suggested that the experiment be done on the low. He thought it was a risk because no one would get the chance to try it if something happens with the FDA. Kayla apologized, but she was desperate to help her brother. He understood what she was going through. Dr. Russell wanted to be let out of his contract so he could take his drug somewhere else. Kayla stared at him in disbelief. She wondered why he wanted to leave when the hospital fully funded him. He was afraid the hospital was going to shut down because one million dollars wasn’t going to be enough. His potential investors could give him more money. Kayla realized she wanted to sell it to a big pharmaceutical company. She received a text about a patient so Dr. Russell used that as an excuse to leave. Kayla demanded to know what the emergency was with EJ and why he was out of bed. EJ wanted to be discharged immediately, and he wouldn’t hold the hospital libel for it. Kayla got frustrated with him and agreed to let him leave. Leo approached Gabi at Rafe’s place. He wanted to find out who shot EJ. Gabi said Ava did it. Leo didn’t think it was Ava. He thought she did it. Gabi was disgusted by his accusation. She didn’t understand how he couldn’t see that Ava did it. The police would find Ava and arrest her. Leo reminded her how they almost ran into each other the night EJ was shot, and she said incriminating things about EJ. Gabi warned him that she would sue the paper if he printed anything about her being EJ’s shooter. They argued a little more before she stormed off. He looked at her pocketbook. Susan told Johnny that things would work out with Chanel and EJ. She thought EJ would be home soon. Johnny wondered when he was coming home. EJ limped into the room while they were talking. Johnny was going to leave when Susan stopped him. She wanted them to work things out. He brushed past Susan, and she got a bad feeling. She told EJ that Johnny was carrying a bad secret. EJ was going to ask Susan to help him find Rafe’s memory card, but he remembered where it was. Leo decided to look through Gabi’s pocketbook. Gabi walked back in the room and wondered what Leo was doing. Chanel and Johnny saw each other at the town square. He had his luggage with him. Chanel walked past him and went to the bakery. Susan went upstairs, and EJ doubled over in pain. He sat at his desk and took out the memory card. EJ watched the memory card on his tablet. He’s watching a recording of Johnny holding a gun on him.

Johnny noticed that Abe and Paulina’s apartment was decorated with baby items. Chanel was excited when she showed him the crib that she wanted to get. She wondered if Belle left the adoption papers. He lied to her and said she was busy and didn’t do it. Chanel hoped that Belle would drop the papers off soon because she thought something would go wrong with the adoption especially since EJ woke up. Johnny told her that EJ didn’t have a choice but to stay away from the baby. He confessed that he meant what he said about hoping his father would die. Chanel became uncomfortable and changed the subject. She told him about the places she was looking at. He thought it was beautiful, but he didn’t want to rush things. Shawn was on the phone with Hope. He tried to talk her into letting him come out to be with his parents. Hope didn’t want him to leave town. Shawn ended the call and told Jada that his father was dying. He blamed himself for shooting his father. Shawn talked to Jada about growing up thinking that his mother was dead. Bo made sure he had a good life. Jada asked him about the houseboat they lived on. Steve told her about his history. Shawn thought it was amazing. He told her that his father was the best man in the world. Jada hugged him as he started to cry. She talked to him about how she felt when she lost her father. Jada was by Marcus’ side when he died. She let him know that he wouldn’t feel any better being by his father’s side. It didn’t help her feel better. Jada said that Shawn was where he belonged. Shawn wanted to take her mind off her problems, but he unloaded his onto her. She didn’t mind helping him and wanted to get some air. Roman and Kayla talked about the auction and how it helped the hospital when Hope called. She let them know about Bo’s condition. Marlena and Steve were outside the pub. They were feeling good that the ISA would bring John back. Steve and Marlena went inside the pub and reunited with Kayla and Roman. Kayla told them about Bo’s condition. She told them that Bo took a turn for the worst. He got an infection from the ventilator. The doctors couldn’t stop the infection. It turned out that Bo has sepsis. Steve wanted to know if they were giving up on Bo. Kayla didn’t want to give up, but the diagnosis wasn’t good for him. She knew someone who worked on a drug for sepsis, and he worked at the hospital. Marlena knew about the doctor too. Kayla said the drug was still in the first stages and hadn’t been tried on humans yet. She and Steve walked out of the pub to get some air. While they were at the town square, Kayla asked Steve if he was okay. He was still trying to process what she told him about Bo. He couldn’t believe that this happened after finding Bo alive two years ago. Steve thought Bo could beat it since he cheated death before. He refused to give up. Kayla felt helpless about the situation.

Marlena and Roman were talking when Johnny arrived at the pub. Johnny and Marlena sat down and talked about everything that happened recently. She let him know that she talked to Sami about what happened. He said talking to his mother helped, but he was done with his father. Johnny wished his father were dead. She warned him that there is an ongoing investigation about his father’s shooting. Marlena didn’t think he should keep talking like that. She liked the idea that the adoption was going to happen after all. There was nothing standing in his way now. Johnny admitted that he’s standing in the way. Marlena wanted to know what he meant and how Chanel reacted to it. He didn’t know how to tell Chanel, Tate and Sophia about it. She told him that not wanting to hurt people was not a good reason to adopt. It wasn’t fair to the baby or Chanel. She advised him to talk to Chanel about the way he felt. Shawn and Jada ran into Steve and Kayla in the square. He felt guilty about what happened to his father. Steve and Kayla assured Shawn that it wasn’t his fault. They were going to get through it together. Chanel waited for Johnny to get home. She wanted to show him pictures, but he needed to talk about the adoption. Chanel looked at him in horror.

Gabi talked to Rafe about the money she spent on Alex. She said it might have been a mistake since Philip and Xander might fire her. Rafe told her that Jada wanted him to meet her at the station. He wasn’t sure if Jada forgave him yet. Gabi said she hoped Jada forgave him. When they finished talking, Gabi left to go to work. Rafe got on the laptop and looked at the recording device but the memory card was gone. Brady went to Gabi’s office. She was furious until she realized he could help her out. Gabi wanted Brady to talk Xander and Philip into letting her buy the rights back to Gabi Chic. Since they had Basic Black, they didn’t need two fashion brands. Gabi thought they would listen to Brady because he’s family. Brady asked why she thought he would help her. He said he hasn’t forgiven her and Stefan for doing him dirty in getting custody of Rachel. Also, there was too much going on with his family. He advised her to stick it out.

Jada and Shawn talked about EJ’s shooting and how Ava looked suspicious. Shawn wanted to go to the hospital to question EJ. Jada told him Rafe was stopping by. She also told Shawn that Rafe slept with Sami. When Shawn left, Rafe stopped by. Jada told Rafe their relationship wasn’t going to work anymore. She said she didn’t think they could move past what happened. Jada didn’t think they knew each other that well. Rafe said a lot happened, but he wanted to fight for their relationship. They had good times together. Jada agreed but the trust was broken and couldn’t be undone. She said EJ was at fault for a lot of their problems, but they had problems before. Jada brought up her taking his job. She still loved him but it was over. He said she meant the world to him but it was a good idea to take a break for now. Rafe said he was quitting Black Patch and was going to take an out of town job from his old boss. They told each other goodbye. Belle went to ser EJ at the hospital. He asked if her feelings were real. She admitted that she loved him. EJ said he hoped it wouldn’t fade away. He said he was a terrible person and didn’t want that to be his legacy. EJ said everyone hated him. He said he felt guilty about messing up the adoption. Belle said the adoption went through, but he couldn’t be around the baby. She said he could have a relationship with Johnny but not the baby. EJ said he didn’t like arguing with Johnny. He thanked her for being there for him. Shawn walked in. He said he had questions for EJ. EJ asked what he wanted to know. Shawn asked if he had any memory of Ava to which EJ said he didn’t. EJ said he saw her the night before and she threatened him. Shawn went back to the police station and told Jada what EJ said. An emotional Jada told Shawn that she and Rafe broke up. Shawn suggested they take a lunch to which Jada agreed. Johnny told Chanel that he couldn’t find a job. Chanel thought it was better not to start a new job when the baby comes. While she was excited, Johnny wasn’t. Chanel thought it was because of EJ waking up. Johnny said he didn’t want anything to do with his father. Chanel said she didn’t want anything to mess up the adoption. She said once he signed the papers it would be official. Later on, Johnny checked the news about the shooting. Belle showed up with the adoption papers. Johnny said he couldn’t sign them. He said he wasn’t ready to be a father. Johnny talked to Belle about his parents’ relationship. Belle told him to be honest with himself. She went back to the hospital to check on EJ. They talked about their love. Shawn told Jada about Belle and EJ. He got a call about Bo. It was bad news.

Chad and Cat talked about the fundraiser. While they were talking, JJ showed up. He let them know that things between him and Gabi weren’t any better because he accused her of murder. When Chad left, Cat let him know that Gabi would forgive him. After she finished talking, JJ asked Kayla if he could ask EJ questions. Xander went over to Sarah to see why she was talking to Philip. He thought she was being too nice to Philip. She said she wanted to be nice in public. Sarah wanted him to be nice for Maggie. When Maggie came over to them, Xander told Maggie what Philip did. Maggie pretended to be shocked. Sarah said they were all shocked. She made a mess, so Xander left to clean it up. While Xander was gone, Sarah told Maggie that she didn’t know if she could ever tell Xander the truth. Maggie wasn’t sure what she should do. Xander came back with Rachel. Sarah and Rachel left to play games. Maggie asked Xander what he was going to do about Philip. Xander said he had to play nice with him because of DiMera. Maggie advised him to have compassion for Philip because she believed Victor would have wanted them to work together. 

Kristen went to see EJ and demanded to know where her mother was. She said that was the only reason why she wanted him to survive. He acted as if he didn’t know what she was talking about. EJ said he hoped she found her mother soon. Kristen didn’t know why he was acting the way he was and thought it might have been the coma. She said she had to deal with losing DiMera and wanted a truce so they could get it back. When she assumed she could count on him, he said she couldn’t. Kristen yelled at him for turning his back on her. He said he reflected on himself while he was in the coma and wanted to be a better person. Kristen didn’t believe him, but EJ said it was true. When she brought up EJ getting shot, Kristen said her money was on Gabi. EJ said his mother had a vision of Gabi shooting him, but he thought he could be looking at her. He said he hoped she didn’t shoot him but if she did, he would forgive her. While Kristen was threatening EJ, Kayla and JJ came in. Kristen ended up leaving. EJ wondered what JJ wanted. He told JJ that he didn’t remember much about what happened the night he got shot. EJ said he was drinking and passed out. Kayla said she didn’t think the alcohol was why he didn’t remember. She said his injury was affecting his memory. EJ said he remembered Chanel and Kristen but not much else. Kayla asked JJ to leave so she could check on EJ. When JJ left, EJ thanked her for taking care of him. Kayla said he was important to people she cared about. She told him Sami and Johnny came to see him. EJ said he didn’t know that. JJ got a text from ballistics saying the bullet was too damaged but wasn’t a match for Ava’s gun.

Chad wanted JJ to go with him and the kids to the carnival fundraiser, but he wasn’t up for it. JJ told Chad about his fight with Gabi. He didn’t think they could work things out. Chad advised him to give Gabi some space. He thought the carnival would take JJ’s mind off of the fight. JJ changed his mind and decided to go. Chad, JJ and the kids arrived at the carnival. Cat took the kids to get face paint. Kayla talked to JJ about EJ’s shooting. She wondered if there were any leads on what happened. He talked about tracking down Ava. Kayla wasn’t surprised that they wanted to talk to Ava. Chad noticed Cat with his kids. He admired the way she handled his kids. Cat and Chad talked about the auction and explained it to Charlotte. She didn’t want her father to be involved in the auction because they might not bring him back. He reassured her that no one would take him away. Sarah had a nightmare that Philip told Xander about her involvement in his life. Xander woke Sarah up so they could go to the fundraiser. The couple arrived at the fundraiser, and Sarah wanted Xander to forget about Philip. He spotted Philip at the carnival. Alex told Stephanie that he was still thinking about what happened with Xander. They agreed that Xander shouldn’t find out about Sarah’s involvement in the secret. It was time to forget about the problem and focus on the fundraiser. Alex wasn’t really ready for it. Stephanie reminded him that he was part of a bachelor auction. Technically he’s a bachelor, but they were a couple. Alex and Stephanie start flirting with each other. Stephanie told him that his date with the woman who bid on him would be platonic.

Xander told Philip to get out of Salem. JJ got between them and wanted to make sure everything was okay. Xander wanted him to arrest Philip for fraud. JJ wanted more information, but Xander backed down. He told him that Philip messed up a business deal. JJ was about to leave when Xander warned him that he should stick around because he wanted to kill Philip. Sarah told JJ that it was a sibling rivalry so JJ walked away. Philip thanked EJ for not getting him in trouble with JJ. He told him that he did it because he has to work with him for the takeover at DiMera. Xander was prepared to beat Philip up so Sarah had to come between them. She sent Xander to get hot dogs while she talked to Philip. The bachelor action began. Alex was the first on the block. Stephanie and Leo bid for Alex. The bid got to $1,000 when Gabi showed up. She spotted JJ and bid $10,000 on Alex. The bidding war continued, and Gabi made it go up to $15,000. She looked at JJ to get his reaction to her bid. Leo and Javi approached JJ about accusing Gabi of attempted murder. He couldn’t believe she spent so much money to make him jealous. Sarah apologized to Philip and thanked him for not telling Xander about her involvement in his secret. She thought her marriage would be over if Xander found out the truth. He promised he wouldn’t say anything to Xander. Philip walked away from her. Xander stared at them from the background.

At the hospital, Belle admitted to Susan that she loved EJ. When Belle grabbed EJ’s hand, he stirred. EJ woke up. Susan was excited that he woke up. When Susan mentioned Belle, EJ stared at her. Belle left to get the doctor. Susan let EJ know that he was safe. She went to Belle and let her know that they should go back in EJ’s room to give him energy. Belle said she was glad that EJ was okay but wasn’t sure if she was ready to face him yet. Susan went back n EJ’s room. EJ asked her what happened. Susan said he was shot in the chest which meant he knew who shot him. EJ wanted her to tell him more about what happened because it might trigger a memory. When Susan told him what she knew, it didn’t help EJ. He said he remembered seeing someone. When Belle walked in, EJ said it was her and remembered what she did. Susan started yelling at Belle. EJ said Belle wasn’t the shooter. He said he remembered her betrayal. Susan ripped into Belle for trying to send EJ to prison after saying she loved him. EJ asked Susan to leave his room. When Susan left, EJ asked Belle if she loved him. Gabi was talking to Cat about Chad. When Gabi brought up EJ and the shooting, Susan showed up and ripped into Gabi for talking about EJ. Susan accused Gabi of being at the mansion the night EJ was shot. Gabi flashed back to when she was outside of the DiMera mansion. She denied Susan’s accusation. When Susan said EJ was awake, Gabi was shocked.

Johnny went to see Chad at the Horton House and told him he saw EJ at the hospital. He said Chad was the reason why he went to see him. Johnny said he talked to his mother and had a better understanding of her choices. He said he wanted to support Sami, but EJ was a different situation. Johnny wasn’t sure if he could forgive EJ after what he has done. Before Chad could say anything, Belle called him and said EJ was awake. When Chad got off the phone, they agreed to see EJ. Chad went to see EJ. EJ said he had Chad to thank for saving him. Chad apologized for the article being the reason he got shot. EJ said he was trying to figure out what happened that night. He said Belle, Chanel, and Kristen were there. Chad promised EJ that they would catch the shooter. Amy went to Paulina’s house, to let Chanel know that they could revisit the adoption. While they were talking, Amy brought up EJ and his involvement. Chanel assured her that EJ wouldn’t be near the baby even if he made a full recovery. Amy said she had no problem with the adoption. Sophia went to see Tate to let him know that her mother was considering the adoption. She said she wasn’t sure what her mother was going to do. Tate offered to help her with the labor. While they were practicing for Lamaze class, Sophia got a text from her mother saying she agreed to the adoption. Susan let EJ know that she was pretty sure she knew who shot him.
