I was actually gonna reach out to Kristen to see if DiMera could bail it out, but I really don’t think the board’s gonna want to bail out what they see to be a failing hospital.

A long time ago when Rafe was with my cousin Sami, a similar thing happened. I was right here, actually. And at the time, I was feeling distressed about my love life. And I ran into Rafe, who was very sympathetic, which was fine. But then he gave me this really inappropriate hug.

So you’re saying Rafe has pulled this crap before?

No, see, that’s the thing. I found out later it wasn’t Rafe, that actually, it was this guy named Arnold Feniger. [dramatic music]

I don’t understand, Steph. Who’s Arnold Feniger?

He’s Rafe’s exact double.

Considering that about 15 years ago, Stefano and EJ DiMera hired him to get plastic surgery so that they could use him to take over Rafe’s life.

And did that actually work?

Huh. And now you think maybe this guy is back and the reason Rafe was acting so weird all this time is because it’s actually Arnold.

Arnold was a world-class creep, which would explain Rafe’s behavior. The only problem is–

Honestly, I don’t know. It could be some sort of delayed reaction to your injuries, to all that time you spent in the coma. I don’t know, maybe it messed with your brain and changed your personality.

Maybe I like my personality. And you’re just pissed because you can’t roll over me and control my life like you used to.

Bo and Hope figured out that he was posing as Rafe, and they arrested him. Only when he was at Salem PD, some of the other prisoners thought he was Rafe.

They got into Arnold’s cell and gave him a beating.

They beat him to death?

Pretty grim.

Ah. Well, I guess it’s not him pretending to be Rafe, right?

And Arnold was about to testify against them. He was about to tell the whole world that they hired him to impersonate Rafe.

But he got killed before he could testify.

And EJ walked away scot-free.

Lucky guy, huh?

Lucky guy. Lucky guy who just happens to be involved in all of this again.

And he was the one who hired Rafe to dig up dirt on Jada.

Which never made sense to me because if Rafe wanted to make extra money for the wedding, why would he ever, ever investigate the woman that he loved? Unless–

Unless it wasn’t Rafe.

Because Arnold didn’t really die.

As much as I’d like to right now, I’m worried about you, Rafe. Look, I’m sure after all that time you spent in the hospital, it’s the last place you want to be. But if something is seriously wrong with you, we need to figure out what it is.

Well, the games, obviously. One year, I think my dad spent over $100 on the ring toss, won absolutely nothing. Felicity was completely devastated until we took her to her favorite part, the dunking booth.

Oh, hell yeah. Everybody loves a dunk booth.

Mm-hmm. Yup. Oh, my God. You should have seen her. She was trying so hard to throw the softball to dunk her principal in the water. Finally, she just ran over, grabbed the target, and yanked it down. [both laugh]

Well, that’s one way to do it. OK, then we need to have a dunk booth.

Mm. Put the nurses and doctors in it.

Marlena would be the first one to sign up.

Wait, really?

Oh, my God, you kidding me? She’s the best sport I know. She’s gonna make jokes about how the pool should be filled with holy water. It’s gonna be hilarious.

[laughs] Wait, I don’t get it.

I mean ’cause she was possessed by the devil. [dramatic music]

Stephanie could really help get the word out on this.

It’ll be all hands on deck. In fact, Cat and Chad are brainstorming now.

How did Chad become a part of this?

Well, we bumped into him in the square. And since we want to involve “The Spectator,” I don’t know, it just seemed like a– like a good fit. [dramatic music]

I mean, Chad is determined and resourceful, but did you say that they are brainstorming together?

I know they have a very complicated history.

Yeah, I would imagine you’d have to. I guess that’s why everybody loves her so much. [light music]

Yeah, yeah, DiMera works with this foundation that does a silent auction every year. You know, people donate vacation, art, tickets, you know, stuff like that.

It would be more fun if it was a not-silent auction.

OK, like, a live auction, then?

Yeah. I mean, I’ve only really seen them in movies, but it’s pretty exciting, you know, all the rich people with their little paddles.

OK. We can have security on hand. But we can keep it fun with the items. We can have, like, a hot-air balloon ride or a candlelit dinner for two.

What, you want to guilt husbands into buying things for their wives? That’s diabolical.

Only if I’m right and Arnold is still alive, EJ could be using him to pose as Rafe again.

I told her the truth, obviously, that it was a cry for attention because she wants her parents to be back together.

Yes, exactly. Exactly. This is not a case for CPS. [scoffs] Oh, my God. Every child runs away at least once. I mean, it’s not like we’re abusing her.

Kristen–Kristen, it’s not that simple, or I wouldn’t be here right now.

The file that CPS had was an inch thick. They knew all about our custody battles over the years. They knew all about our respective criminal histories. They said that Rachel has been through too much trauma. And I couldn’t disagree. I also didn’t disagree with the fact that a lot of this is on us.

Yes, I mean, we’re parents. We’re not perfect, Brady. But damn it, I mean, nobody– nobody loves that child more fiercely than you and I.

I know that. I know that. You know that. I’m sure our daughter knows that. But I needed to warn you that this woman is gonna want to talk to you and probably to Rachel.

OK, then we need to all be on the same page.

Kristen, what we need to do is make sure that nothing else goes wrong with Rachel. Nothing. No more lying, no more running away, no more–no more kidnapping, no more forging, no more blackmail. And that goes for all of us here.

Look, I know he’s my cousin, but this dirt that he’s dug up on her can’t possibly be legit. I mean, she’s being made out to be this awful, amoral person when Rafe’s the one who cheated on her.

Oh, well, well you should. I mean, if you’re gonna be staying in Salem, you need a permanent place to live. Did you look at those new lofts down by the harbor?

No, actually, I didn’t, because I’m moving into my father’s house.

My God, I am so happy to be out of scrubs. I had three emergency appendectomies today, which means that I was on my feet for approximately– [tender music]

And the doctor is so very grateful. And I’m also grateful that you got our little girl down for the night. Yeah, I checked the nursery before I got changed.

Well, Victoria is not only down for the night, but I gave her a bath…

And read her two bedtime stories.

You got her to go to sleep after only two stories?

I made her a deal: four stories tomorrow as long as she let me get ready for my hot date with her mum tonight.

Oh. She may look like a sleeping angel, but that girl drives a hard bargain.

Well, I did consider making my world-famous haggis, but it’s not the most romantic food. So yeah, I let Henderson and Cook handle the menu.

Mm. No one knows how bad it is. Since the board declared bankruptcy, we’re all just left scrambling to figure out what’s next.

Could the hospital really close? [dramatic music]

The staff seems to think so. So everyone’s, you know, jockeying for position and trying to find new and interesting cases and procedures to make themselves look good for prospective employers.

So that’s why you had three appendectomies today.

Yes, and I fear there’s only more of that to come if we don’t just start playing the game.

Yeah, especially after that train wreck that Jada left at the police department, and, you know, after she stole my job. So, yeah, no surprise that I’m feeling a little bit overwhelmed.

You know that Jada didn’t set out to steal your job, right?

Oh. I get it. OK. Team backstabber, huh? Mm-hmm. Well, you know what? It’s no surprise, considering that, uh, you pulled the exact same stunt with EJ.

Beyond sure. This is the last place that I want to be right now. No offense.

No, I completely understand. I guess I was just hoping that if Rafe were to come home, the two of you could still–

Work things out? Yeah. You know, if this was a few days ago, I might have agreed with you. But now, every conversation I have with that man, it just gets worse every time. I even returned the engagement ring last night. I mean, “return” is a bit generous. I pretty much tossed it at him.

If you don’t mind my asking, what did he say this time to get you so worked up?

I tried to talk to him about EJ setting me up. And you know what he said? He told me that I should just let it go.

What? He said that?

I know, right? I mean, not only did his feelings for me just magically vanish, he has now allied himself with EJ– EJ DiMera, of all people, a man that he supposedly despises.

I don’t get that.

Yeah. Shawn, he thinks that maybe his coma possibly altered his personality somehow, but I don’t know. Just thinking about this just makes my head hurt.

Jada… I’m so sorry. If there’s anything that I can do…

You know, at this point, to be honest, I just want this–just all of this to be over with. You know, after Bobby, I can’t go through this again. I can’t. So it’s–I think it’s time that I just move on. Get over it. Move on.

[clears throat] Put simply, you have a crisis on your hands. Now, we all knew from the very beginning you putting Jada in Rafe’s job was a huge misstep.

You’ve already had to eat crow and suspend her. And to make matters worse, you replaced her with Rafe Hernandez, the very man you had her replace just a few months earlier.

I do not need a former district attorney to tell me how to do my job.

I’m merely a concerned citizen.

Concerned about what, exactly? You know, not too long ago, your concern nearly ousted Paulina as mayor.

I have no desire to retread that line of events. Believe me. I simply want to help the good people of Salem the best way I know how.

[chuckles] And how’s that?

Well, as you so kindly pointed out, I formerly served this great city as district attorney. And at the time, I was working alongside the current police commissioner, Rafe Hernandez.

So you gave him his job back. How about giving me mine back, too?

I can’t imagine what this must be like for you. You and Rafe really seemed like such a great couple up until recently.

It’s fine, honestly. I’m just thankful that he showed me his true colors before we officially got married.

And their intuition. I mean, I think any other cop with any sense would know that Jada would never do the thing she’s been accused of. I mean, Jada would never break rules to get ahead. She’s not ambitious like that. She’s just a–a hard worker and an honest cop and a really good friend.

Not ambitious? Not–wow, OK. You don’t really know Jada that well. You have never seen her go after something that she really wanted, something that she wouldn’t be denied?

I mean, like I said, she’s a hard worker. And, yeah, maybe she had her eye on the commissioner job a few years ago, but they gave it to Shawn instead.

Yeah, and she said that it’s pretty risky for me to get pregnant right now for both me and the baby.

Yeah. Thanks. It was kind of a blow. But Johnny and I were just sitting here talking about how we both really want to be parents.

And discussing our options.

And then you showed up and you’re looking for someone to adopt your baby.

And it kind of just feels like it’s meant to be, you know?

A book that my grandfather gave to Julie for Valentine’s Day one year. She thinks she left it here last April during that blizzard.

Wow. You’re right, it does kind of seem like it is meant to be. Are you two sure about this?

Yeah. I mean, it makes sense, right? Like, you could tell Mrs. Choi that the baby’s going to stay in the family since you and I are cousins.

Yeah. Or are we coming on too strong? Or, you know, maybe this is a little too close for comfort for you two. Or, I don’t know, maybe you have somebody else already in mind.

No, no, no, no, no, no. Sophia and I have searched high and low for a couple that her mom would approve of. And we’ve had no luck.

Has she already shot down a few people?

Not exactly, but her family’s religious, so that’s definitely a factor. We thought this couple from her mom’s church was on board, but they backed out.

So she won’t let anyone adopt the baby who isn’t a part of her church or doesn’t practice the same faith as her?

I don’t exactly know what her parameters are, but the only way we could convince her to let the baby be put up for adoption was if it was by a couple with good Christian values.

Hmm. Good Christian values, huh? [soft tense music]

[imitates flying sound] Thank you.

I hope you don’t mind, baby. It’s not very fancy.

Mind? Are you kidding me? This is my favorite thing in the whole world.

Mm. Just reminds me of what my mother used to always say. You’re only as happy as your least happy child. I mean, Stephanie should be out having a special night with a guy on her Valentine’s Day, not helping her parents wine and dine each other.

Well, I mean, I do know that there was something brewing with her and Alex Kiriakis again. And I didn’t want to pry. But she did say that they were having trouble trying to make it work.

Well, I suggest you should pry more often because it’s the only way we can get our kids to tell us anything.

[scoffs] What do you mean?

Stephanie told me that she and Alex worked it out. As a matter of fact, they’re having dinner tonight.

Color me shocked, but I had no idea there was a big game, let alone one that you’d be interested in watching.

It’s the Longhorns game. Sorry, sometimes I forget that I’m not in Texas anymore. [Javi chuckles]

Is that football?

If it were Thanksgiving, maybe. [laughs] It’s basketball season. My dad and I used to watch every Longhorns game. You didn’t grow up watching sports?

Not if I could help it. But if I had to, I was way more interested in the cheerleaders. No, no, no. I’m totally gold star. I just cared more about the choreography than the actual games.

See, I actually did care about the games, especially during March Madness. My father and I used to fill out our own brackets and then we place bets to see who can beat each other. And if I won, I’d get 10 bucks. And then if I’d lose, I’d have to, you know, clean out the garage. [both chuckle]

How did that shake out?

The garage was spotless. [laughter] But I didn’t care. Watching the games with my dad, hearing him yell at the TV, I felt close to him. [sentimental music] Which is why I was worried telling him that I was gay and it would change everything, which is why I waited as long as I could.

And what did he say when you told him?

He said, that’s nice, son, but you still have to clean the garage. [laughter]

My god, it must have been such a relief.

It was. And nothing changed between us. When I told my mom, that was a whole other story. Nothing was ever the same between us again. [somber music]

A first date on Valentine’s Day?

Well, I wouldn’t exactly call it a first date. But yeah, looks like they might be diving right into the deep end.

Well, you know what? I’m really happy for Stephanie. I mean, I know how worried she was that it couldn’t work out with Alex because of Joy Wesley.

Well, apparently he was finally able to end things with her.

Well, I’m sorry for her. But after everything that Alex and Stephanie have been through, I think they need a second chance. Wouldn’t you agree?

Listen. I’m happy she’s happy. But Alex? Look, I know I sound old-school, but he’s a notorious player.

I have heard that he has mellowed over the years.

I just don’t want to see her get hurt again.

I know. Listen, I would be lying if I said that I am completely on board with the two of them getting back together. But they’re young. And how do you grow older and wiser if you don’t make some mistakes?

Yeah, well considering all the times we foolishly broke up… I guess we must be really wise.

[chuckling] Right. Oh, yeah, our wisdom is infinite. No, I’m just saying that look at us. We overcame our issues. And it made us stronger and better, right? I just hope the same thing happens for them.

I wouldn’t say I’m an expert either, but my mother did insist that I learn about all of the best French vintages. One summer as a kid, she took me all over the country. We must have hit every single vineyard this place has to offer. It was like a field trip.

Well, I hope not a grade-school trip.

Mm. High school, technically. But they’re a little bit more permissive there. Although I know my father wouldn’t have been thrilled.

Oh, wow. Where did Justin think that you and your mom were going all over France?

Euro Disney.

[laughs] No.

Mm-hmm. Yep, he said, just make sure you take him to the Louvre. That’s it. You take him to the Louvre is what he said. You make sure he gets his culture.

Wow. Well, you certainly got that.

I did, yeah. So we went to the Louvre, obviously.

Mm-hmm.

Then we hit all the best restaurants. My mother, she would order these six-course tasting menus.

Wow. Not a bad way to spend vacation.

Yeah. Beat getting a lifeguard job, that’s for sure. [both chuckle] I think my mother just– she viewed it as her duty as a parent to show me the finer things in life. Although, time to time, I do wish she had a little bit more of a conventional approach to her parenting.

But there were upsides, too.

And I’m not just talking about how this wine didn’t come out of a box. Without her, you wouldn’t be who you are today.

Mm, I guess– I guess not.

We wouldn’t be here together. So for that, I’m grateful. I’m grateful for her, too.

You know, do you think maybe it’s possible that she just wanted to extract herself from Kristen and Brady’s drama?

And use Wendy and Tripp as an excuse? Yeah, I’ve considered that. But that would be the best-case scenario. Worst case, something is really wrong. So I need to get to the bottom of it for Tripp.

Yeah. I mean, we went to the hospital hoping I could get pregnant, and we came home possibly adopting a baby.

Oh, yes. Yes, we were, 100%. But I think we kind of just blurted it out. And now that the adrenaline is starting to wear off, um, I’m wondering, should we really do this? Should we really adopt Tate and Sophia’s baby? [soft dramatic music]

I came up with some ideas for a campaign to save the hospital.

That was our plan, you know, before “Body & Soul” and all the chaos that came with it. And now that our marriage is finally back on track, I’d really like to just focus on the two, soon to be three, of us, hopefully.

Um, about that. I know that I was the one that suggested it last night, but– [soft dramatic music]

What is it, Chanel? Are you having second thoughts?

No, I really am ready to be a mom. It’s just that, um, well, there may be a problem. [dramatic music]

Oh, red roses. Are those for me?

Who else?

Oh, thank you. Red roses were your grandfather’s favorite flower. And I was just– I was just remembering a very wonderful Valentine’s Day that we spent together.

Really? Well, I would love to hear about it, as long as it’s PG-13, please.

Please, please, come sit down. I’ll tell you. It was a Valentine’s night, and his nightclub was absolutely slammed because half of the staff did not show up. So Doug decided, I’m going to be the chef, and I will serve my speciality. And he brought out this huge platter of buttered noodles. [laughs] And everybody loved him for it. And it was so much fun. You know, your grandfather had this gift to bring joy up to the maximum.

So I’ve heard.

Yeah.

But I didn’t know you guys owned a club.

Oh, yeah, for years. It was called Doug’s Place. That’s where your grandfather, Robert, used to sing.

Really?

Yeah.

Do you guys still own it?

Alas, no, we don’t. He turned it into a restaurant, and he gave it to me, and he called it Julie’s Place, and we had some wonderful memories there too. It’s gone. [chuckles]

Well, maybe you can open a new club in his honor.

What a lovely idea. No, sweetheart, it would never be the same, not without my darling Doug. [tender music]

Sophia, we talked about this. I will never approve of my grandchild being given away to strangers.

But what if they weren’t strangers, right? What if you got to meet them and get to know them. We could find a perfect couple with Christian values and then invite them over for dinner.

So after one dinner, I’m supposed to say, “Sure, go ahead and raise my grandchild.”

We could have as many dinners as you like.

[sighs]

Or maybe we’ll find a couple that you already know.

Like who?

Well, I have been talking to Greg and Ellen Yu. [soft dramatic music]

Really?

Yeah, you like them, don’t you?

Sure, I like them. They’re both successful Korean doctors, dedicated members of our church. They said they’re interested in adopting?

Yeah. But they changed their mind. But we’re going to find another couple just like them. You know, a perfect couple who’s really going to give this baby the best life possible.

Don’t you think that the best life possible would be with his or her biological parents?

No, I don’t. And we’ve talked about this so many times, Mom. Tate and I, we’re too young to have a baby. And we aren’t even together, so it’s just going to be a disaster.

OK, so then why is it so difficult to imagine another couple loving this baby? Like, there are plenty of couples who can’t get pregnant but who want more than anything in the world to be parents. This could really be the baby that somebody’s been praying for.

I can’t wait to be with you. I just want to make sure that you don’t feel pressured. I know this is a big deal for you. And so–

I know, I know. But it’s just– I’m really just not ready to go through that again.

I get it. And hey, it’s not like we got to rush right into this thing.

Yeah. I know, but, Johnny, I really am ready to start our family. So maybe we should see if we could get an appointment with Kayla, you know, just get her advice.

Actually, he was paid to break up my marriage.

Yeah, it’s a long story. And that’s– that’s a story for another day. Well, my marriage was a marriage of convenience, certainly not love. And in a very short time, Doug’s passionate feelings for me were quite genuine, and I responded big time. [chuckles] You know, I told you he was a singer. Around those years, he wrote a song for me, and he called it “Julie.” Then years later, he wrote out the lyrics, and he put them in a book of poetry and gave it to me on Valentine’s Day.

Wow. I would love to see those lyrics he wrote.

It’s just that your hCG levels are high right now, which could signify a new tumor stemming from leftover tissues from your molar pregnancy.

Well, there’s no way of knowing until we do further testing. But even if so, I’m sure it’s a low-risk disease, something we can take care of in a short procedure. But still, I think that, well, you shouldn’t get pregnant for a few months so we can keep checking your hCG levels. [somber music]

OK, well, look, it just means we just got to be patient for a little longer, right?

Well, could this affect my chances of getting pregnant in the future?
