Well, I just talked to Julie, and it turns out that Melinda didn’t mention either one of our names to the cops.

[sighs] That’s a relief. So we’re in the clear, then, right?

Well, I don’t know about that. Julie also said that she’s not gonna rest until she finds out who took the necklace. So even though Melinda didn’t say anything, I’m starting to think maybe I should.

What do you mean?

I think maybe I should tell Julie that I’m the one who took the necklace. [tense music] [phone rings]

Hi, Mrs. Williams. This is Tate Black.

[chuckles] Hello, Tate. What can I do for you?

I am not quite sure how to say this, but I know about what’s happening with your grandmother’s necklace, and… I have some information about who took it.

Well, what kind of information?

I know who stole it.

I was in the neighborhood, figured I’d save you a trip down to the DA’s office. Your mother’s immunity agreement? I can take the signed version down to the ADA, make sure it gets filed right away. Of course, I’ll take one last look, make sure there aren’t any screwups.

OK, as much as I appreciate your initiative, Melinda, I am afraid that there is going to be a problem with this.

I mean there is no signed version of the immunity agreement. My mother never signed it.

[sighs]

Rita, I cannot thank you enough for your help in organizing Rachel Blake’s… [clears throat] Travel arrangements. Au contraire. You’re efficient, as always. You’ll hear no complaints from me. Kristen, on the other hand– no, I told you. You need not concern yourself with my sister’s feelings. She may be your boss, but she has no idea of your loyalty to me. And if anything, I think you deserve a bonus. After all, you not only helped me dispatch of Ms. Blake but of Feniger as well. Thanks to you, any person who could have caused me trouble has been taken care of. I mean my mother has vanished without a trace.

I’m sure she has a cell phone. Can’t you just call her?

No! No, I can’t. She’s too old-fashioned to have one. And even if she did, there’s no way EJ would have let her keep it.

Oh. I’m sorry. Did I fail to mention? EJ’s the snake who made her disappear in the first place. [exhales sharply]

[scoffs]

Aww. As opposed to when I was tied to an antique wheelchair, you mean?

A wheelchair, you say? I’m afraid I don’t know what you mean.

[laughs] EJ, come on. Drop the act. As much as I would love to be the one to put you behind bars for your part in my kidnapping, I think we both understand why that won’t happen.

Hmm. The news of your ordeal certainly did sound horrific. As a former prosecutor, I can only offer you my deepest regret that justice for that crime is likely to elude you. [tense music]

Look, Holly, the point is, the clock is ticking. And if Julie is eventually gonna find out who took the necklace, it has to come from me before someone else can get to her first.

Tate, it’s very kind of you to reach out to me, but Melinda Trask has already denied all of the allegations about her stealing the necklace. She says she bought it legally, and the police are not going to arrest her.

That’s not who I’m calling about.

Well, then what do you mean?

I know Melinda Trask is the one who has your necklace now, but she’s not lying when she says she didn’t steal it. Someone else did.

Well, who? Tate? Tate, are you still there?

[sighs] It was Doug Williams.

OK, but what about waiting until you get the necklace back? That way, you can tell Julie, and she might go easier on you then.

But I just don’t see how I can get it back, Holly. Let’s face it. I’m out of options, and I’m nearly out of time. But hey, this is my fault, OK? [dramatic music] And I will take the fall for it alone. I promise. I won’t even mention you at all.

Me? I’m not worried about me. I’m more worried about you, Doug, and Julie. She really cares about you. This confession could really hurt her.

I know. But I think it would hurt her more to hear it from someone else. After the stealing and the lying, I owe her this much.

OK. Well, just know if you do go through with this, you’re very brave.

[chuckles] I’m just trying to make things right.

And you know what? There’s a good chance Julie’s gonna agree with me. She might even be impressed by your honesty.

Maybe. But either way, this is what I have to do. Thank you for your help with everything.

Tate, you’re telling me Doug’s own grandson stole the necklace?

Unfortunately, yes. That is exactly what I’m saying.

[scoffs] No. No, dear. I don’t believe it. And I don’t understand how you could say such a thing to me.

Mrs. Williams, I’m so sorry. I really–I don’t want to upset you. I just think you should know the truth. And the truth is, Doug Williams is the one who stole your necklace.

We’re in the capital city of Tallinn. It’s the last place the ISA had stationed John. And unfortunately, it’s a very large city, so he could be anywhere at all.

[sighs] Well, listen, why don’t you try to get some rest? I know that you and Steve are probably gonna want to hit the pavement hard tomorrow morning.

Well, it’s already bright and early here with the time change, but– yeah, and Steve’s already gone out to see if he can follow up some leads.

I see. Well, listen, keep me posted. We’re gonna find Dad. I love you.

So EJ got rid of your mother. How? Why?

Why? Well, unfortunately, the why part has to do with my mother’s big mouth.

[sighs]

Apparently, she let it slip to EJ that I was getting her an immunity deal in order to take him down.

Ah, hence the disappearing act.

Mm-hmm. You know, I told her to stay in her room. I mean, I suppose it’s my fault, I mean, thinking that that would be enough. I should have just taken her out of the house then and there.

But EJ beat you to it.

Yeah, and shipped her off to God knows where. And now we don’t have anyone to testify against him.

Well, I must say, I admire your determination. But like you just said, we both know why that’s not going to happen. If you spill on me, Kristen and Brady’s precious daughter will be taken away from them. And all the blame goes to you.

Oh, EJ. Who said anything about spilling?

If you’re referring to Ms. Blake’s part in all this, I wouldn’t hold your breath. I have it on very good authority that she’s been removed from the equation.

Removed? Removed how?

Let’s just say she won’t be setting foot in Salem for quite a while.

OK, well, good riddance. At least I won’t have to worry about her breaking into my room, wielding a kitchen knife.

Oh. Is that a thank-you?

Hmm. EJ, come on. I know you did this to save your own skin. So… you might feel safe now, but… doesn’t mean you are. I certainly may not be able to testify against you, but… doesn’t mean I can’t get justice in other ways.

Oh, you know, just our old pal EJ gloating. He knows that I can’t touch him regarding his part in my kidnapping–well, unless I want Rachel’s parents to be taken away from her.

I’m sorry. I know I’ve said I’m sorry a lot, but I really do mean it. I’m sorry that you’ve had to deal with any of this.

Yeah, you know, it is what it is.

[sighs] Can we–can we go inside, maybe upstairs, and talk a little bit, please?

Brady, listen. Honestly, I just– I don’t think there’s anything left to talk about. [somber music]

So your mother’s current location, you have no clue as to where that might be?

No. EJ is stonewalling me. Oh, there’s nothing in life that gives that man more pleasure than having the upper hand, especially when it comes to me.

Not exactly brotherly love.

Oh, for God’s sakes! I mean, I just got my mother back, and he takes her away from me. There is no way in hell he’s gonna get away with this.

I’ll admit it’s malicious, even for EJ. But as you said, he has the upper hand now. Unfortunately, I can’t see how we’re gonna be able to take it back.

I don’t know about the upper hand, but there might be a way to force his. [dramatic music]

How did you do? Any word on John?

No, not yet. But I don’t want you to worry, because I was able to put out some feelers to some of my contacts here, and they are gonna put us in touch with some of the locals John was working with before he went missing.

Oh. Well, that’s something, huh?

It is. And chances are, we could hear from them as soon as tomorrow.

[exhales heavily]

So listen, why don’t we take the day, rest up, recover from the jet lag, and we will hit the ground running first thing in the morning?

That sounds like exactly what Brady said. It’s just, it’s taking a while now, you now. I came all this way to find my husband, and I will not leave until I find him. [somber music]

Yeah.

Did something happen with Doug? Are you OK?

No, I’m fine. Actually, I’m more than fine now that I’m no longer in danger of being an accomplice to the whole necklace situation. That is what you were worried about, right?

Yeah. Yeah…I guess. But how can you be sure?

Well, because Doug promised to keep my name out of it when he finally confesses to Julie today. [dramatic music]

You remember this evening how upset I was when I– we walked into the restaurant and there was Melinda Trask wearing the diamond necklace, flaunting it. You see, it reminded me of the day that we– we buried your grandfather. ‘Cause that day, somebody came into the house and stole it.

And perhaps they didn’t know it was a family treasure. You see, it was a treasure because it was my grandmother’s. I told you that, and… she was the matriarch of the whole Horton family, and we all loved her so much. But somebody decided to turn the necklace into money, I suppose. I don’t understand it. How could somebody do a thing like that?

Maybe you know.

What do you mean?

I know. I know you stole the necklace. [dramatic music]

So Doug is gonna confess to Julie today? But I thought he was gonna wait until he got the necklace back.

Yeah, well, I guess he changed his mind.

Because of Melinda Trask?

Because Doug knew one way or another Julie was eventually gonna find out. So he figured it would be best coming from him.

Holly, there’s something that you should know. [dramatic music]

I know. I know you stole the necklace.

You–you do? How?

Does it matter? I know. Are you going to deny it?

No. No, it was me. I took the necklace. And I was coming here to tell you that just now.

Oh, really? It’s been missing for months. You’ve lived under this roof for months. Tonight I find out about you. You come to confess. What a coincidence.

Believe you? After all the lies that you have told me? You know, when you first showed up, everybody in this family was suspicious of you–not me. I thought you were a miracle. Doug’s grandson coming to– to share my life. My God, I accused my own brother of taking the necklace. And you were standing there, and you said nothing.

Oh, sure, you did. You took advantage of me at the darkest hour of my life. I’m there at Doug’s graveside, and you saw an opportunity.

Julie, I swear, that is not–

Now, come on. You don’t want to insult the good people of Tallinn, do you? I bet they make a killer breakfast. And besides, you need to keep up your strength. I would catch hell from John if you get sick on my watch.

I was thinking of all the times that John and I have been in danger, in some kind of trouble. And no matter where we were, even if we were separated, somehow we knew what the other person was feeling. And–and somehow we knew that we would always find our way back to each other, no matter what.

Look, if this is about Kristen’s mother coming after you again, then–

No. You know, it’s not that. It’s not, Brady. It’s just–[chuckles] And besides, EJ has said that I don’t need to worry about Rachel Blake ever again.

Why?

Well, because according to him… [chuckles] She’s been removed from the equation, whatever that means.

Well, Kristen’s not gonna be happy about that, but that’s good for us, isn’t it?

For us?

For us, yeah. If you don’t have to worry about Kristen’s mother coming after you anymore, you don’t have to worry about her getting in the way of us.

Yeah, but I’d still have to worry about your daughter. Because look, you just said Kristen is not gonna be happy about this, OK? And our relationship, I’m certain it is not going to survive the blast once she goes on the warpath.

Listen, I will– I can talk to my daughter. I’ll talk to Kristen if I have to. I’m just tired of everyone interfering in what we have here.

OK, but, Brady, that’s the thing. Something always interferes with us. No matter how hard we try, no matter what we put into it, something is always coming between us. And I– [sighs] I just–I can’t do it anymore.

I’m sorry. I must have misheard. It sounded like you said you were going to make me–

DiMera’s new CEO. Yes, that is what I said, brother dearest. You see, I’m willing to step down in the position and recommend to the board that you are my replacement.

Mm-hmm. And what makes you think the board would listen to your recommendation?

Oh. I can be very persuasive.

Mm.

Yeah, I don’t buy it.

Yeah, well, it doesn’t mean as much as my mother does.

Oh, really? Even though you lived without her for all those years?

I only lived without her because I thought she was dead. Why are you hesitating? [scoffs] I mean, this is your ideal scenario. I mean, you win. I lose. And it’s only gonna cost you giving me my mother back safe and sound.

It’s a pretty small price to pay for such a huge victory, wouldn’t you say? So…do we have a deal?

You seem to really have your mind made up.

I have. And look, I know– I know this is– it’s really– it’s not great timing. You have so much going on with Tate and with your dad missing. And I am so sorry about all of that, but… at the end of the day, I’ve got to protect myself.

You just said that Kristen’s mom wasn’t gonna be an issue anymore.

Yeah, no, I don’t– I don’t mean like that, Brady. I have to– I have to protect myself, my– I have to protect my heart from you.

Me?

Brady, I like you. I like you. I really, really do. But I just–I got this sinking feeling that no matter how hard we try, this is gonna end badly. And when it does, I just–

I was just thinking about all the times that John and I have saved each other over the years. You remember Megan, when she held me captive? Everybody thought that I was dead. And then the two of you found me on that Greek island.

Well, we didn’t exactly track you down, though, because technically, we didn’t really know you were there.

Well, then you just found me without– without knowing you were finding me.

Well, I suppose that’s possible.

Yeah, don’t give me that look. Come on. You and Kayla do this all the time. You know, you have a sense of what’s going on with the other person, no matter whether anything is being said or not. [soft music]

I would call that our love.

Yes. And it’s always there and always drawing you back to each other. Hattie had me committed to Bayview. And John was in the room right next door to me.

Well, I guess it’s hard to chalk that up to coincidence.

We couldn’t– we couldn’t see each other. But we could hear each other. And we found a vent. And we were able to reach up, and we were– we were able to touch each other’s hands. It was such a relief.

I want you to know that I was not out to get Doug. I just didn’t like that he was dragging you into all this, and I was worried that you were gonna get in trouble. So I–

To put it simply, I don’t trust you. How am I to know you won’t pull some trick at the eleventh hour to deny me the position?

You think I would risk something like that with my mother on the line?

Oh, you want to talk about risks? How about the enormous risk I’d be taking letting your mother back in our orbit, where she is free to blab and gab to whomever she pleases about my alleged illegal escapades? No. No. No, her silence is far too valuable a commodity for me to even consider letting her set foot back in Salem again. So seeing as we have nothing else to say to one another, I bid you good night, dearest sister. Ugh.

This isn’t over, EJ! I will get my mother back one way or another, and I will make you pay!

So I finished the paperwork. And the police report is officially filed?

Great. Now you can go arrest Melinda Trask.

I wish you’d just let me buy the necklace back from you, Ms. Trask. And why would you want to keep it now? I mean, Holly already warned you what would happen if Julie saw you wearing it.

Look, I’ve done absolutely nothing wrong. But as I said, if the police accuse me of theft, I will have no choice but to point them in the direction of the actual thief.

Doug. Hey, what’s up?

Leo.

And Melinda Trask. Long time, no see, which is especially unusual here in Salem, where one tends to run into everyone they know at least every five minutes or so, and– oh, my God. You’re the one who bought the necklace?

I’m sorry, too, that I gave you such a hard time about it. But given my history with him– well, given everyone’s history with him, I just hope that he doesn’t break your heart or get you involved in something shady.

You sure about that? Because with Leo Stark, there’s always a stupid scheme that he’s right in the middle of.

Why am I not surprised that you are mixed up in all this? Did you help young Doug here steal the necklace?

Oh, well, OK, look, I was just the middleman. Young Doug here was going through a tough time, and I put him in touch with a friend.

You mean your fence?

From whom you evidently purchased stolen goods.

I didn’t know it was stolen at the time.

Can we please take it down a notch, guys?

Well, forgive me if I am sick of being called a criminal.

OK, well, now that you know the piece was liberated from its former owner, why not just sell it back to Doug and we can put all this behind us? He just wants to return it to its rightful owner.

Well, filing the police report was an important first step. But now we have to prove the necklace Melinda Trask is wearing did belong to Great-Gran and was stolen from the time capsule.

I already proved it. I recognized it immediately.

But as ex-DA Trask was very quick to point out, you only got a brief look at it on the day of Doug’s memorial before it disappeared. And there’s no pictures of it. There’s no insurance. There’s no records of any kind. The last time anybody saw it before you opened the time capsule was 60 years ago.

What about all the people that were standing around when we opened the time capsule? Ciara, Lucas, Shawn, your mother, my brother, Steve. All of them can corroborate, yes, this was Alice Horton’s necklace.

OK, that’s a start. If they’re able to do that, it could definitely help our case.

Great. [gasps] I can text them. I can text them that picture I took of Trask wearing the diamond necklace. Great. Then we can nail that obnoxious thief.

I’m sure Doug will give you what you paid for it. Right, Doug?

I will. I told you I would.

Yeah, well, we’ve already been down that road. He promised me every cent that I paid for it in installments that would stretch into the next century. So I will give you the same answer that I gave him and his little friend Holly: no. I will not sell the necklace back to him. [dramatic music]

[sighs] It’s been a long time since we’ve just gotten to be together.

Yeah, it has. And it’s partly my fault. I was acting like a jealous jerk about Doug.

[chuckles] OK, we’ll call it even. Wasn’t exactly happy about the whole adoption falling through. Think I kind of threw a tantrum, if you remember.

Yeah, I do remember that a little bit. Yeah, it is great news, though, that the adoption might be back on, right?

Best news ever.

You know, I have some other great news.

I’m an investigative reporter now, thank you very much, who might just decide to write an exposé on a former DA who is knowingly in possession of stolen merchandise that she refused to return.

The merchandise that this “investigative reporter” helped fence? Is that the merchandise that you were referring to, Leo? That’s what I thought. And given that you’re also implicated in this transaction, I think that you should think twice about writing that article. Wouldn’t be a very wise move, now, would it? [tense music]

Yeah, even–even he turned me down. I could probably get Pockets the Clown. But you’re the only weirdo in the world that would enjoy that one.

That is my normal way of trying to lighten a tense moment, which obviously failed here. But at least I am self-aware enough to know when I am being a jerk, right? OK, so in an effort to not be a jerk again, I will just say that I am grateful to be here. I haven’t tried that place. How is it?

Oh, It’s lovely. The ambience is beautiful. Food’s delicious. [tender music] I haven’t been back since your grandfather passed away, but–

A few months ago, when Rafe was missing, I followed EJ down to the tunnels under the DiMera mansion, and I heard something.

Mm, yeah, I remember that. EJ claimed that you just heard some kind of construction work.

Except Johnny didn’t know of any work being done down there. It must have been Rafe. And the last thing Rafe remembered was seeing Arnold at the DiMera mansion. So if EJ thought I was on to him, he had to have moved Rafe someplace else.

Kristen’s family home?

Ava might not have seen Rafe, but there’s no way Rachel Blake didn’t, and she can testify against EJ.

Mm. There’s just one problem with this plan of yours.

And that is?

You’ll never get a DiMera to turn on another DiMera. Mm-mm. That family is like the mob. They close ranks when the cops have one of them in their sights.

Except Rachel Blake is not a DiMera. In fact, her life was destroyed by Stefano.

Mm, Kristen controls every aspect of her life. Oh, you’ll never get Mother Blake to drop a dime on EJ without her daughter’s say-so.

Steph and I were just catching up. We haven’t seen each other in a while.

Very funny. He said–no, he promised, actually, that he would never go away without telling me again. But as far as letting somebody else save the day, it’s not in his nature.

Of course we did. But sooner or later, this life catches up with you. And I just pray to God that it hasn’t caught up to John already.

Brady convinced me to leave it alone. Again. Look, the long and short of it is, uh, if any of Rachel Blake’s crimes come to light, Brady could lose custody of his daughter. So now I am constantly looking over my shoulder, wondering if that maniac is gonna come after me again. [tense music]

Yes, really. And look, I could easily bring your mother in as an accessory after the fact. But as I said, I want to bring down EJ. And, Kristen, there’s no love lost between you and your brother, so why don’t you just tell me what I want to know?

Hm. I’m sorry. We have nothing to say to you.

Oh, is that right? Well, someone is gonna go down for what happened to Rafe. OK? And like I said, I’m only interested in EJ. But if I can’t get enough evidence to build a case against him for the DA, then someone else will go down. So your mother might want to reconsider about being quiet, because the next time I come, I will be coming with a search warrant and an arrest warrant.
