[sighs] So, once again, Xander is none the wiser that our father’s letter is a forgery. Um, hello? Did you hear what I said?

Jeez, Mom, I’m telling you how we narrowly avoided going to prison for fraud. What could be more important than that?

Look, we’ve been over this. EJ DiMera is not going to hurt me. I’m not afraid of him.

Nor should you be, because he won’t be coming after you. And he won’t be going after my other sons, as a matter of fact.

No, the news said that everyone else in the house was okay. But EJ had to get rushed to the hospital, and they put him in a medically induced coma. He’s in critical condition.

[sighs] Oh, my God. I mean, I’m hardly EJ’s biggest fan, especially after the whole adoption fiasco, but, still, this is Johnny’s father and Rachel’s uncle.

And Holly’s stepdad. That is, before her mom divorced him anyway.

Yeah. Do you think she knows?

Well, it’s all over the news, so I don’t know how she could have missed it.

Yeah, I mean, I just– I wonder how she’s taking it. I mean, I know she was furious at EJ over what he did to Eric and Nicole, pretending to be Jude’s father. But… even so, it can’t be easy for her.

Well, maybe at least now some things might be going a little easier for us.

I mean that EJ DiMera getting shot could be the answer to our prayers.

Then why are we going along with it, seriously? I mean, I get that it would turn Titan upside down… if Xander found out the truth, that… Philip forged this letter basically stealing half of his birthright, but doesn’t Xander have the right to know he’s been duped?

Okay, fair point. But you also tried to kill Chloe, Sami, and my father a couple of times. Not to mention the fact that you have been known to carry a gun in the past.

Exactly. Protection. Because if there’s one thing the people of Salem know about Kate Roberts-Brady is that she will go to great lengths to protect the people she cares about… especially when it comes to her family.

So then you agree, don’t you? It’s not so far-fetched for me to wonder if maybe… just maybe… you gunned EJ down to stop him from hurting the people you love.

No, of course not. My God, I-I hate gun violence, no matter who’s getting hurt. And my heart goes out to his family and all that. But I mean… well, haven’t you at least considered what this could mean for the adoption? My mom said her biggest objection was EJ, uh, that she didn’t want him involved, and now…

Sophia… EJ is in a coma. He’s not dead.

I know, and I know that… it’s horrible that the man was shot, but… Like I said, I feel for him and his family. I’m just–I’m looking for a silver lining here, okay? Which is that assuming that it takes a while for Johnny’s dad to recover, if he does, then my mom shouldn’t have any more problems with Johnny and Chanel adopting the baby. I’m sorry. I know that this is all a little bit messed up.

Uh… to put it mildly.

But aren’t you at least the tiniest bit relieved? I mean, hasn’t the adoption caused us enough troubles? Not to mention troubles for you and Holly.

Well, um, she just– she said that she needed to get it off her chest. She needed a confidant. It was, um–it was after one of our fundraiser meetings at the hospital that she opened up to me, and… she said she felt horrible about it.

I don’t understand. Um, why didn’t you tell me about any of this at the time?

I didn’t want to betray Stephanie. She said that she was planning to come clean about it, and she was just– she was just trying to find the right time. So it wasn’t my secret to tell.

Oh, I see.

And that’s… that’s why I wanted you to drop your suspicions about Philip and Stephanie when you came to me at the hospital. It was ’cause I-I knew that you were onto them, and… I just wanted to protect my friend. [dramatic music] Xander… I am so sorry that I lied to you.

Yeah, well… pissed is a bit of an understatement. [scoffs] I bet Doug just loved it.

Hey, who cares about Doug? What happened with you and Holly? I mean, did you tell her that you were just trying to look out for her?

Yeah, but, uh, she didn’t buy it. She claimed that the reason I did it is because I was jealous. It isn’t entirely untrue. [dramatic music]

Hey… Holly’s going to come around. Just give it time. I mean, the two of you have had issues before, right?

Yeah, but… that’s the thing, Sophia. I think Holly and I have finally had one issue too many… thanks to Doug Williams.

The gods are smiling down on us, gents. Kristen’s one crisis away from a straitjacket, and EJ is fighting for his life in a coma.

So maybe we should hold off on dancing on his grave, yeah?

Oh, I’m sorry if I sound callous, but the important thing in this moment is to realize that now is the time to make our move on DiMera, thanks to whoever pulled that trigger.

[scoffs] He wasn’t understanding at all. He was angry. He was hurt. He was being held captive, while his beloved fiancée was cheating on him with you.

Really? Jada slept with Shawn Brady? You mean the brooding hunk with piercing blue eyes and the jawline like Robert Pattinson? Sorry. Sorry. Your–your jawline is amazing too. And I take your silence as a yes. And I’m guessing Jada hooked up with Shawn after Arnold put her through the wringer. Well, that’s exactly right. I mean, your sick, twisted doppelganger treated Jada like crap. It makes sense why she’d seek the comfort of another man.

He’s not dead. That hoity-toity alpha male is still alive. So I guess I overstated things when I said there was a killer in our midst. More like a would-be killer. Unless, of course, EJ doesn’t make it. Then it’s just your garden variety 12-part podcast series killer.

All right, I get it. Just tell me how it happened.

He was shot point-blank in the chest in his own home. As soon as I heard the news, I raced over to the mansion to try and get the scoop.

And what was it?

Well, the police were pretty tight-lipped. All I got was that his injuries were quite serious, and they suspect he might not make it.

Good. That bastard deserves a one-way ticket to hell.

So what are we dealing with, then? You said the bullet did a lot of damage?

It punctured one of EJ’s lungs. And although we were able to repair the damaged tissue area, he lost a lot of blood. But he’s very lucky because the bullet just missed his heart.

OK. Can I see him?

Yes, but just for a little bit, OK?

Chad, is there anything I can do for you while you’re in there?

Just say a prayer for my brother.

You don’t think you can forgive her? Come on, primo. Don’t you think you’re being a little unfair here? Jada was a victim, just like you. And that woman loves you so much.

That was Rafe’s point. Just kept going on and on about how I should have known the difference. I’m a detective, his fiancé. I should have– I should have figured it out.

And after speaking with EJ, what did you do?

I went upstairs to check on my sleeping daughter. And then I took a shower, and I checked on Rachel one more time. Then I went back to my room. I started drying my hair, when a cop knocked on my door and told me what had happened.

You didn’t hear a gunshot?

No, like I said, I was taking a shower and drying my hair.

What kind of question is that? I always take a shower before bed.

You sure there was no other reason?

Like washing off blood or gunshot residue.

Wow. I don’t think I realized just how much you hated EJ. I mean, I knew you hated him. I just didn’t know you hated him, hated him.

Of course I hate him, hate him. He sent me to prison for a crime that I didn’t commit and then, in his Machiavellian way, ruined my marriage to Stefan. And on top of all of that, he kidnapped my brother and replaced him with a skeezy, lecherous lookalike. He definitely got what was coming to him.

Well, that’s debatable, of course. Tell me, who do you think did the deed?

No idea. But whoever it was, they’re a hero in my book. That bitch-ass clown needed to pay.

Can I quote you on that?

You know, it’s getting late. If you want to go home, I’m sure Chad would understand.

Oh, I– I thought I would stay. He doesn’t have anyone here, and he’s really shaken up, so…

Yeah, I imagine this has brought back a lot of terrible memories for him.

He was talking a lot about losing Abigail.

Well, that was devastating, of course. But I was really thinking about EJ. He was shot before by one of Clyde Weston’s men.

How many lives has that man destroyed?

At the time, everybody thought that EJ didn’t make it, that he had died from his injuries, and then later found out that his father had actually revived him, and he had recuperated in secret for years.

But Chad thought he was dead the entire time?

Yeah. And even though they have not always had the best relationship, I know Chad loves his brother and is so afraid to lose him again.

JJ, you know very well Haley Chen’s death was an accident, a terrible accident. And not to speak ill of the victim, but the number of people in this town with a reason to take a shot at EJ could fill Horton Town Square.

Yeah, well, so does Gabi. And when I ran into her earlier, she certainly wasn’t making a secret of it. [dramatic music]

Leo told me. Do you know if he made it through surgery?

I haven’t had a chance to check in yet. I’ve been a little busy at the scene.

I can almost feel the mob of bloodthirsty villagers out there preparing to storm the castle, demanding my head on a pike. And it wouldn’t surprise me if Rafe Hernandez and his psychotic sister Gabriella are the ones leading the charge. [suspenseful music]

[chuckles] Oh, of course there are plenty of other people who despise me. Kristen, Jada Hunter, Paulina Price, and her offspring, of course. My very own daughter-in-law, Chanel, who took me to task for her adoption woes.

[sighs] Well, maybe nothing is, but, well, Johnny and I were just together at the square and he said that he was going to see his Grandpa Roman at the pub. But that was a while ago, and I’ve called him and I’ve texted him and nothing.

Well, honey, I’m sure Roman, he’s just plying him with chowder and pie. They’re not even paying attention to the time or their phones.

Still. [sighs] You know what? Maybe I should just go by the pub just to make sure everything is OK.

Oh, I am just finalizing some plans for the hospital’s fundraiser while Dr. Evans is out of town. Every time I think that I’m finished, something else pops up. [chuckles]

Oh, I just hope that we’re able to raise enough funds to keep it solvent, at least for a little while.

Yeah. Well, I will just forward these revised spreadsheets over to you. Take your time, no rush, but look at them when you can.

Well, I’m not even halfway through a 36-hour shift. I’m on call for the ER. But the biggest thing I’ve had today is a consultation for a foreign object extraction. Lima bean up the nose.

Oh. [chuckles] Lovely. Actually, my brother Aaron had a similar thing with an action figure. Little GI Joe went spelunking. [chuckles]

Wow.

Yeah. Mark was in med school and he almost quit on the spot because he was like, that kid screamed so loud, I’m not going to be able to take that if that happens in my job.

Well, you know, my patient was unnaturally calm, kind of like the ER today, so I don’t mind looking at them now while it’s quiet.

Well, he knows what a good cause it is, and–

Yeah, and I’m sure you were very persuasive.

It was a struggle, I’m not going to lie, yeah.

You know, I noticed that, um, the two of you have been spending a lot of time together.

Yes. Working on the fundraiser. A-and I’m honestly so relieved that he and I are on good terms, you know? I mean, it’s a miracle that he’s even speaking to me after what I put him through. So–[sighs]

Are you aware that, um, he was seeing my daughter Stephanie?

Yeah. I remember that, yeah.

Mm-hmm. And it really–it really seemed like they had something. But in the end, he wasn’t really ready to move on. It was too soon. [soft dramatic music]

Um… I know what you’re saying, Dr. Johnson. I understand. But I am only involved in this fundraiser because I want to help the hospital. I–I’ve seen what it means to this community. And–and after everything that the doctors did for my sister, it’s the least that I can do.

I appreciate that.

You know, my sister had open-heart surgery when she was a baby here. And obviously, the surgery was a success. It’s what inspired Mark to want to go to med school. He was so proud to work here, to work with you. I just–I want to honor what this hospital means to my brother and my sister in any way that I can. [soft dramatic music]

Oh, honey, I understand. I mean good Lord, what your husband has been through lately.

Yeah. Yeah, it’s been a lot. I mean, he was in such a bad place even before the adoption fell through. You know, finding out how he was conceived has changed the way that he looks at his father, at everyone who kept that secret from him. Even himself.

Himself? What do you mean?

Well, I mean, he knows that it isn’t logical, but he also realizes that he wouldn’t be here if his father hadn’t– [sighs] You know. And well, he’s just– he’s struggling, Mama, and I don’t know what to say or what to do.

Chanel, honey, sometimes, all you really need to do is be there. Like I’m being here for you, OK?

Yeah.

You’ve been going through it too.

Thank you. I–I’ve been so worried about Johnny that I haven’t even taken the time to mourn our loss. You know, I felt so bad when Amy Choi said that the adoption was going to fall through because of EJ. And just, Johnny–you know, the first thing that he said to me was that he was sorry as if it was somehow his fault.

[scoffs] And of course, it wasn’t. Johnny can’t help who his daddy is or what he does. And I’ll have none of this sins of the father nonsense. There’s only one person to blame, and that’s EJ.

I know. And that is exactly what I said to Johnny and to his father. [soft dramatic music]

You talked to EJ?

I did. I wanted him to know exactly how much Johnny was suffering because of him. And, um, he told me that you gave him hell too. And did I tell you that Johnny said that his father was dead to him?

Mm, strong words.

Mm-hmm. And he meant them too. And–[sighs] God, I feel so guilty for thinking this, but if EJ were out of our lives, we would all be so much better off.

I hear you. I felt the same way about Lani’s father, Ray. Ooh, I didn’t want him to make her life miserable, so– [sighs] You know what? You know what? All you need to do right now is just be there. You let me handle the rest. Now, I promise, I promise that I am not going to let EJ ruin this adoption for you.

Yeah. Well, thank you for saying that, Mama. But at this point, I don’t think that there is anything that will change Amy’s mind. Yeah, not if there is any chance that EJ will have any influence over the baby’s life. There is no way that she is going to let us adopt Sophia and Tate’s baby. [tense music]

Well, obviously, you’ve known John a lot longer than I have. But there’s one thing I know for sure is that even if the odds are virtually impossible, he can beat them. He’s like James Bond, only cooler.

Dad is my idol. You know what’s funny about that is that we did not get off to a good start. You know, come to think of it, neither did you and I. When I first got into town and after my rotator cuff surgery, you were my therapist. And–and it just so happened, you were Will’s grandmother. And I know that was a tough spot to be in.

Well, you also were in a pretty tough place. Your baseball career was over, and you were in the process of coming out.

I mean, if it was just the cheating, maybe in time, Alex could forgive her. But lying to his face like that, making a bloody fool out of him by keeping that secret for God knows how long.

I imagine she and Philip realized they had unresolved feelings for each other. I mean, they did split up so abruptly for reasons I’m still not clear on. But, God, I just wish they hadn’t snuck around behind Alex’s back. He didn’t deserve that.

Look, Alex and I haven’t always gotten along, but he did take my side against Philip in court. And, God, he took it like an absolute champ when he found out he wasn’t really Victor’s son. Didn’t fight me. Didn’t blame me. Just graciously stepped aside.

Yeah, he’s a– he’s a really great guy.

And after the way Theresa messed him around, I mean, he was finally happy with Stephanie. And they went through so much to get back together. For her to betray him like that, God, he must be devastated.

Sarah knows about Philip’s scam?

After my fight with him, I ran into Sarah, and I told her everything.

And she didn’t tell Xander? She didn’t want her husband to know the truth?

Steph, Philip tricked him out of half of the company. Xander deserves to know.

I don’t necessarily disagree, but it isn’t that simple.

Well, it is that simple for me because it happened to me. I bought into a phony letter misrepresenting Victor’s wishes, and it turned my entire world upside down. I’m not letting it happen to my cousin.

And that’s fair. But, Alex, this isn’t just about Titan. If Xander finds out that Sarah’s been lying to him all this time, he will never forgive her. Their marriage will be over.

I’m not getting it. Why did she even lie?

The way Sarah explained it, Kate and Philip argued that even though Victor’s letter was a forgery, it was still somewhat truthful. They believe that Victor wanted Philip to run Titan. But when he wrote his will, Philip was struggling with mental illness, and so Victor couldn’t put him in charge. And Sarah didn’t think it was fair to penalize Philip for that.

So Sarah cares more about what’s fair to Philip than what’s best for her own husband.

She does care about what’s best for Xander, what’s best for everyone.

How is that best for everyone?

Sarah was worried if Xander were alone at the top, all of that power would go to his head. But if Philip were there, he could act as a check, stop him from doing anything crazy or illegal.

Shouldn’t Sarah be able to trust her own husband?

If Xander were alone at the top, would you trust him? [dramatic music] There was also the strong chance that if Xander found out what Philip had done, he would either prosecute him or kill him. And I didn’t want to be responsible for that.

So you’re just pretending that you don’t know anything.

[sighs] I don’t like it either.

And, Alex, believe me, if this lie had directly affected you or our relationship, just like that nonsense about me sleeping with Philip, I would have shut it down from the beginning. But it doesn’t.

Steph–

No. Bottom line. If you tell the truth, it’ll be World War III in your family. And all the stability and success that you’re a part of at Titan, it’ll be completely destroyed along with Sarah and Xander’s marriage.
