Leo talked to Chad about doing a story on John. They talked about John and the article until Chad had to leave for his date with Cat. Leo advised him to call off the date especially if Cat had feelings for him. Chad agreed with Leo and said he wasn’t ready to move on from Abby. Leo said keeping Cat from getting too close and not jumping out of a plane was a good thing. Gabi comforted Arianna over John. They talked about Will and how he wasn’t happy about Arianna living with Leo. Gabi said she wasn’t happy about it either. Arianna said she wanted to help her father get through it. Gabi said being there for him was enough, but she should try not to disappear again. While they were talking, they got into a fight until Rafe came home. Rafe said he was allowed to leave training early for John’s funeral. When Arianna left, Gabi told Rafe that she didn’t know her daughter. He comforted her and told her he was working overflow assignments from the Chicago office which allowed him to work in Salem. Rafe said he needed to find the memory stick from the night EJ got shot. Gabi accused Leo of taking it. Rafe didn’t think she was right and wondered if there was anything incriminating about her on the memory stick. Gabi said she didn’t shoot EJ or go in the house. She said she heard him arguing with someone. Rafe wondered if the person who shot EJ found the memory stick and took it. He said the evidence was gone if the person took it.

While Doug was at work, he talked to someone about his missed payment. When he got off the phone, Holly showed up. Arianna ended up showing up and told Holly that John died. Holly rushed out of the pub. Doug made the connection that Arianna and Holly were friends. Arianna assured him that she was legal to which Doug was relieved. While they were talking, a man took their picture. Cat showed up at Marlena’s house. Tate wondered why she was there. She said she brought something for Marlena. He told her Marlena was resting. Before Cat could leave, she noticed a picture of Sami. She said Sami looked familiar, but she didn’t know why. When she saw John’s picture, Cat talked about John helped her mother and grandmother escape an abusive situation. She said she owed him for what he did. Tate called his grandfather a hero and left the room. Jack and Jennifer arrived at the Horton house. They talked about why they were there and how Bo was alive thanks to John. After Jack left to check on the paper, Jennifer asked Julie how she was holding up. Julie said counseling was going well until her anniversary. She said she was grieving over Bo and John. While she was talking, she told Jennifer that Doug stole the necklace. Holly went to see Tate. She said she still cared about him despite their issues. Holly told him she and Doug were friends and thought it was a good idea that Julie knew the truth about the necklace. Tate apologized for what he did and let her know he missed her. Holly said she missed him too. While they were talking, Sophia texted him so they could go on a labor and delivery tour. Tate and Sophia agreed to meet another time. He appreciated her coming to see him.

Hope helped Bo walk to the couch. She reminded him that she was by his side the entire time. Bo remembered the terrible things he did to his family while he was under Megan’s control. Hope kissed him repeatedly and told him it was the first day of the rest of their lives. Ciara walked in and saw Bo and Hope kissing. She loved what she saw. Ciara told him about what happened in her life. She let him know that she had two kids and that she’s traveling the world on a boat like they did. Bo wanted to meet Ben to make sure he would approve of him. Shawn came into the room. Bo was happy to see him. Shawn wanted to know what he remembered about what happened to him. He said he felt guilty every day about shooting him. Bo remembered what happened. He told him that Shawn needed to do what he did to save his mother. Bo told him that he wasn’t responsible for what happened to him. He said it was Megan’s fault. Bo said he was proud of Shawn and hugged him. He was shocked to find out that Chelsea had a baby too. He wanted to see all of his grandchildren. Bo found out everything that happened with the family while he was in a coma. He found out about Shawn and Belle getting divorced, Claire living with Theo in Africa, Kimberly having cancer, and Xander being his half-brother. Bo was shocked that Xander went from gardener to CEO. He found out that Victor died, and the news hit him hard. Bo felt bad that he never got to say that he loved Victor. Hope broke the news that her father died too. He hugged her and apologized for not being there for her when her father died. She told him that he was always in her heart. Ciara brought Bo Jr to meet his grandfather.

Marlena was at the town square by Tom and Alice’s memorial. She called out to John and said that she missed him already. Will got a call from Sami and told him that Sydney got into an accident at the airport and needed surgery. She wouldn’t be able to attend the memorial service. Marlena arrived at the townhouse and told the kids that she had to tell John’s father about the news. Will told her that they would take care of that for her, but she had to get used to doing things on her own. She told everyone that she wanted to honor John’s wishes by having the reception at the Brady Pub. Will and Carrie went to the pub to make arrangements with Roman. Eric stayed behind with Marlena. Marlena told him that she and John didn’t have enough time together, and he was her everything. She wondered if Bo’s miracle came at the expense of theirs. Marlena wondered if it was terrible to feel that way. Eric told her that she was human. Johnny was getting ready for his first day at Titan/DiMera when Chanel broke the news about John’s death. He was shocked by the news. Johnny had his name, but he never felt like he lived up to it. Chanel assured him that he did live up to it and would continue to do it. Everyone makes mistakes. She told him that he had a good heart, and he was brave like his grandfather. They went to the townhouse to see Marlena. Johnny and Chanel offered their condolences to Marlena. Marlena told them that Sami wouldn’t be there for the funeral. She hoped that Sami could find peace with the fact that John raised her. Johnny wanted to make him proud. Marlena told him that he always did. Chanel wanted to be there for Johnny. He didn’t know what he would do without her. She said he wouldn’t have to find out.  Andrew tried to comfort Paul. Paul wished that his father wasn’t a hero for once. They changed the subject and talked about the wedding. They wanted to do it when John was released. The couple ran into Will and Carrie. Carrie never thought that Shane and John’s sons would fall for each other. They went to the townhouse. Paul announced that he and Andrew were postponing the wedding. Marlena didn’t want them to do that. She felt like the family needed a celebration of love. Marlena wanted them to get married in Salem before they left. Paul agreed to do it in honor of his father. When Bo was alone with Hope he told her that he felt overwhelmed by everything that happened. He let her know that his love for her never changed. Hope was happy to hear it. Her love never changed for him either. Shawn wanted to talk to Hope alone. He told her that John died.

Kristen reminded EJ that he’s supposed to bring her mother home. EJ told her he was bringing Rachel home, but Kristen had to hold up her end of the bargain. Kristen agreed to do it but left when she heard Rachel screaming. When Kristen went to Rachel’s room, Rachel told her she had a nightmare about John. Rachel said she had a dream that he died. Kristen told her John was feeling better so they could go visit him when she got out of school. After she put Rachel to bed, she texted Brady to tell him about Rachel. Marlena thought about her last moments with John. In the living room, Belle told Brady she was going to check on their father to which Brady said their father was gone. Belle broke down and cried. Brady told her it happened fast and comforted her. When Marlena went into the living room, he comforted her too. Marlena let them know that it was too soon to tell everyone about John. Steve called Abe and Paulina to tell them about John. They left to go to Marlena’s place. Brady got Kristen’s text and went to the DiMera mansion. Abe and Paulina let Marlena know that they were there for her. Brady told Kristen that John died. He let her know what happened with John. When EJ came downstairs, he heard Brady and Kristen talking and left the mansion.

Kristen told Brady that she was sorry about John’s death. She told him that she as well as other people loved John. They talked about what they were going to do about Rachel. Kristen said it going to be hard on Rachel and told him about Rachel’s nightmare. While they were talking, Kristen told him EJ agreed to bring her mother back. Brady didn’t understand why she would agree to that. Kristen told him she made a deal with EJ to keep quiet about Johnny. Brady was upset that she did that. He asked if Rachel was supposed to keep the secret for the rest of her life. Kristen said she didn’t have to keep the secret for life and suggested that Rachel could talk to a therapist. Brady wondered what EJ would do to keep Rachel quiet. Kristen said he wouldn’t do anything. Kayla went to the pub and told Roman that John died. Roman told her she did everything she could for John. Kayla said Steve called Shane and Andrew. Roman talked about the things John did for him including saving his life. Kayla said John was part of their family. Hope called to tell them about Bo. They were in shock but decided not to tell Hope about John so it wouldn’t ruin her happiness. Kayla and Roman went to the hospital to get John’s personal things. Hope called Julie and told her about Bo. Julie said it was because of John. When Julie got off the phone, she went to Doug’s picture and said it was because of him. She went to Marlena’s place to tell her the news about Bo. Marlena told her John was gone. Julie let her know she would be there for her. While Abe and Marlena were talking about John’s funeral, EJ showed up. Marlena yelled at him when he said he was there to pay his respect. After Belle heard the yelling, she told EJ that Marlena had enough visitors and took him out of there. Roman and Kayla showed up at Marlena’s. Kayla told Marlena about Bo. Marlena was thrilled about the news. When Kayla and Roman said John was a hero, Marlena broke down and cried. Kayla told her she would have Cat cancel her appointments to which Marlena said she didn’t know what she would do with herself if she stayed home. Kayla told Marlena that she needed to take care of herself. When Kayla wanted to put John’s things up, Marlena wanted to see them. Marlena opened the bag and said the gold coin was missing. At the town square, Belle asked EJ why he would show up at her place when her family didn’t know about John. EJ said he wanted to be there for her. He told her he loved her and wanted to hug her, but she pushed him away. Belle said she could feel her father’s presence wanting her to do the right thing. She said she wanted to do what her father would have wanted her to do. When Abe and Paulina went home, he talked about how good of a friend John was. He talked about marrying John and Marlena. Abe said he hoped John knew how much he loved him. Marlena went to her room and thought about John. When she checked her phone, she noticed a voicemail from John. She was upset that she missed his last message about coming home. When she played the message, she heard him say he loved her. She cried and said she loved him too.

Steve and Kayla talked about John’s progress. He beat himself up for getting John’s help with the mission. Kayla assured him that John would have helped save Bo’s life. They talked about Bo’s recovery, but Kayla was concerned about the complications of the drug. Steve hoped that Bo was recovering too since John was getting better. Marlena remained by John’s side and told him that she would be by his side forever. She took out a coin Belle brought and talked about them tossing their coins in a fountain in Italy. Marlena remembered another time that John almost died, and the coin was a symbol that he would be okay. She put the coin in John’s hand. John told her that he was still there. Marlena kept talking to him and told him that her life began when he stole her heart. She told him that he saved her life and was her protector during her dark hours. Steve and Kayla went into John’s room. He tried to apologize to John, but he told him that he didn’t have any regrets. A nurse brought in John’s morphine drip. Steve told him that Rafe left Black Patch so John needed to come back soon. There were flashbacks of their time at Black Patch. Marlena talked about the family and there were more flashbacks of the family. While she was reminiscing about their wedding night, John started choking. Alarms went off while John was choking. He had trouble breathing. Kayla gave him oxygen while Marlena rushed back to his side. She assured him that she was there for him. Marlena begged him to do something, but she couldn’t do anything. She said they could make him comfortable. Kayla said it might be time to call a priest. Steve and Kayla got a priest and Marlena thanked them for it. She thought it might be the right thing to do. Marlena asked them to leave her alone with John. Steve and Kayla said their goodbyes. Marlena and John declared their love for each other. She said it was okay if he needed to go. He fought hard, but she knew he was suffering. She said they would be okay, and he would remain in their hearts forever. Marlena told him to rest.

Hope, Shawn and Ciara were at Bo’s bedside. Shawn and Ciara tried to talk Hope into leaving Bo’s side, but she refused to do it. Hope talked to Bo every day since he was there. She reminisced about Bo’s stories. While they were reminiscing, Bo’s eyes fluttered. They called the doctor, but Bo’s condition remained the same. Bo thought about being at the pub. Steve and Kayla were gone, but Zack was there. Bo didn’t expect to see Zack but realized that he wasn’t in Salem. He remembered a dream with Zack and Hope dressed in white, but he brushed it off. Bo wanted a hug, but Zack didn’t think it was a good idea. He said he wasn’t supposed to be there. Shawn and Ciara thought that Bo was dreaming and that the drug was working. They talked about Bo being a rebel and that they were too. Hope questioned whether Zack would have been like Bo too. Bo’s eyes flickered again, and his heart rate sped up. Hope thought Bo was aware of what was going on. She talked to him again. There were flashbacks of Bo and Hope’s times together. Zack told Bo that his place was with the family. He said he would be okay with the people in Heaven. Bo wanted to stay, but Zack said he had to make a decision soon. Zack would be waiting for him when it’s time. Hope, Shawn and Ciara showed up at the pub and told Bo that it wasn’t his time to go. At the hospital, Shawn called Claire to keep her updated. Everyone was hopeful that Bo would be okay. Hope told Bo to think about everything they’ve been through. She didn’t think their relationship should end that way. There were more flashbacks of Bo and Hope together. In Bo’s dream, his family told him it’s time to get moving. Zack hugged the family. In the dream, Hope told Bo to wake up. Bo was fighting to wake up for years. He didn’t think it was meant to be. Steve begged Kayla to do something to help John. He would go anywhere to help him just like he did for Bo. Kayla told him there was nothing she could do. The couple collapsed in each other’s arms and cried. Marlena laid in the bed with John and cried. She remembered their lives together. John’s voice could be heard talking about how their love endured everything. She laid in his arms, and John’s heart stopped. Marlena held him until the end. Hope told Bo to fight and not give up. They did everything they could for him so he had to fight. He had to fight for them, and their family. Bo started coding, and Hope begged him to fight. He suddenly opened his eyes. Bo called Hope “Fancy Face.”

While Marlena and Paul were with John, Paul blamed himself for what happened to John. Paul said he should have gone to the lab instead of letting his father go. Marlena tried to keep Paul from blaming himself. John called out to Marlena. They tried to convince John to get better for them. John let them know he was going to get better by lifting his thumb. There was a flashback of Paul asking John if he could call him dad. After the flashback, John told Paul that he was proud to be his father. At the hospital reception area, Brady talked to Belle about having to vote for EJ after Xander got arrested. Belle was upset with Brady for insulting EJ. She said despite EJ’s wrongdoings, he was trying to change. Belle called Shawn to check on Bo. When she got off the phone, Will showed up. He asked how John was and said Sami and Sydney would be there soon. They talked about Arianna being in Salem. Will went to John’s room and reunited with Marlena and Paul. He thanked Paul for getting John out of captivity. Marlena and Paul left Will alone with John.

Eric showed up at the hospital and joined the family. Marlena and Paul told everyone that John spoke to them. Belle showed up and joined everyone. They all looked at videos of Jude. While Will was with John, he flashed back to coming out to John. Will talked to John about Arianna and her rebellious behavior. Johnny showed up and greeted Will. Will told Johnny to talk to John. Eric showed up to see John. He said a prayer for John. Eric said John was a role model and father figure to him. Brady went to see John and reminded him about the man he has always been to him. He flashed back to John giving him a plaque from the gondola he and Isabella took before she died. Brady appreciated him keeping his mother alive for him. He said he wanted to be the father John was. Belle came in and the two talked about not wanting to see him like that. They said it wasn’t the first time they saw him like this but it was the first time family and friends rallied for him. Belle flashed back to being by John’s side before. She told him he would get through this. John spoke to her. Will asked Johnny what was going on with him. Johnny told him that he didn’t know where he fit in the family after finding out about his conception. Will said he was his brother and that wouldn’t change. He told Johnny that he could talk to him about anything. Before Johnny could say anything, Sonny called. When Will left to answer the call, Marlena showed up and told Johnny to go to the chapel with him. She let Johnny know that she was happy that he and Chanel were back together. Marlena asked if there was any news on EJ. Johnny told her that he left EJ on the ground and felt bad about it. Doing that made Johnny feel like he was like EJ. Marlena advised him that he wasn’t like EJ. At the DiMera mansion, Kristen told EJ that Rachel heard him arguing with Johnny the night he got shot. EJ said Rachel was probably having a bad dream. Kristen believed what Rachel said since he wasn’t getting along with Johnny. She said it was a shame that Johnny would be going to prison. EJ said Kristen and Rachel weren’t going to say anything. Kristen said she would keep Rachel quiet if he told her where her mother was. Marlena told everyone that that she spoke to the burn specialist and John’s recovery was considered a miracle. She told everyone to get some sleep. EJ agreed to Kristen’s demand, but he said her mother couldn’t come back to Salem. Marlena laid in bed next to John.

Rachel told Kristen that she saw Johnny arguing with EJ and he had a gun in his hand. She said what she saw was real. Kristen wondered why she didn’t say anything sooner. Rachel said she didn’t want to get Johnny into trouble. She said EJ got what he deserved since he kidnapped her grandmother. Kristen said she didn’t want EJ to get hurt. After Kristen kept questioning Rachel, she admitted that she didn’t see Johnny shoot EJ. Rachel said she ran away and went to sleep. She didn’t hear the gunshot. Kristen said they should keep what they know to themselves since Johnny didn’t do anything wrong. Rachel said the secret was eating her up inside. Brady talked to Kayla about John, but she said she didn’t have good news. She said he was steady but critical. When Kayla said Marlena was with John, Brady said he would see him later. He asked about Bo. She said the infection hadn’t stopped spreading. Kayla said it was starting to get fixed, but they had to wait and see if his organs were damaged. Changing the subject, Brady asked about the board meeting. They didn’t know if Xander was the right choice after everything that happened.

Belle talked to Jada about the drug Bo got and everything that happened. While they were talking, Jada realized Shawn was at the fire in the meth lab. Belle let her know that Shawn didn’t get hurt. She wanted Jada to get the person who attacked Philip. She told Jada that she was waiting for a warrant to get the footage from Salem Inn. Belle said she spoke to someone who saw Xander at the town square when Philip was attacked. Jada said she needed a motive to which Belle said she might have one. Belle said she wanted to wait until Philip woke up. Changing the subject, they talked about EJ’s case. Jada said there was no progress other than Ava. She said she didn’t think Ava shot EJ. In the square, EJ talked to Chad about Johnny trying to shoot him and said he deserved it. Chad offered to talk to EJ, but EJ didn’t want him to do it. EJ said he had to get to the board meeting before Xander got a leg up. Chad asked if he had anything to do with the drug being missing. EJ denied taking the drug and attacking Philip. He asked Chad to vote for him for the hospital. Chad said he would vote for him. Xander called Sarah and warned her not to keep ignoring him. He left a message telling Sarah that she wasn’t going to keep his daughter away from him. The next call he made was to Melinda. He wanted her to help him with the custody case and was willing to fight dirty if he had to. Maggie and Julie talked about what happened with Xander, Sarah, and Philip. She told Julie that she didn’t want anything to do with Xander if he attacked Philip. Julie said it would ruin things for the hospital if they voted for Xander and he turned out to be the one who attacked Philip. Maggie didn’t want to vote for EJ after everything he did. When they were finished talking, they went to the hospital. Kayla wanted to go over the proposals. She said the hospital was running out of time, but she was tired of Xander and EJ bullying everyone. Kayla said she had a plan. Xander was behind her. He asked if Sarah was working, but Kayla ignored him. When Xander kept pursuing it, Maggie warned him to stay away from her daughter and granddaughter. Xander said he was fond of Maggie, but he wasn’t going to let her keep him from his daughter. The ladies let him know he would have to go through them to get to Sarah. Xander told them things would be different when he bought the hospital. EJ and Chad showed up and let Xander know he didn’t have the hospital yet. When Xander, EJ, and Chad, left, Kayla told the ladies the plan. She said the board could vote anonymously so EJ and Xander wouldn’t be able to bully anyone. Everyone gathered to talk about the board meeting. Kayla let Brady know that the vote was tied. Before Brady could vote, Jada showed up to arrest Xander.

Alex was working at his desk when Belle showed up. She was there to talk about Philip. Alex let her know what happened. He thought he could have stopped the drug theft since he saw Kevin talking to Philip, Shawn and Steve. Alex didn’t understand why Philip pulled off the drug theft. Belle told him that he did it for Bo. She thought his intentions were good. Philip wanted to help Bo to make amends with Xander. Her concern was to bring Philip’s attacker to justice. She knew what the police didn’t know about Xander’s motives. Alex knew about Xander’s motives too. Belle wondered if he thought Xander was guilty. Alex didn’t say either way. Belle warned him that he had to talk about eventually. Alex told her that he saw Xander coming out of the Salem Inn that morning, and he was acting strange the same time Philip got attacked. He didn’t say anything because he owed Xander for not telling him what Philip did. Alex told her that they didn’t know for a fact that Xander did it. If he did, he didn’t know how he could keep working for Xander. If Philip didn’t wake up and Xander went to jail for it, what would happen to the company? Kate was worried about Philip, but Roman assured her that he looked better and would wake up. She wanted Roman to go home, and she would meet him after she talked to the doctor about Philip. Abe and Paulina arrived at the hospital and ran into Kate. They were there to see John but wanted to know how Philip was doing. Paulina couldn’t believe the police let Xander go. Abe reminded her that the D.A. couldn’t do anything without a motive. Paulina went to get coffee. Abe asked Kate why she thought Xander was the one who attacked Philip. Kate saw Philip’s doctor and avoided answering his question. Johnny and Roman were at the pub and talked about John and Philip being in the hospital. They talked about Eric, Sami and Sydney coming back to Salem to see John. Johnny felt like he wasn’t living up to John or Roman’s examples. Roman let him know that he was doing the right thing by processing everything that happened. Johnny noticed the gun lockbox was gone. Roman told him that he moved it since the gun was missing the night EJ was shot. He reminded Johnny that he told him about the gun disappearing the night EJ was shot. Johnny insisted that he didn’t shoot his father and stormed out of the pub. EJ called Brady to talk about the hospital vote. Brady told him what happened to his father and hung up the phone. Kristen walked in and heard what happened to John. She demanded to know what happened to John. EJ only knew that John was in an explosion and that he was near death. Kristen was shocked to hear that. She begged for John to be okay. EJ comforted her. They talked about her past with John. Kristen felt like Rachel would be devastated too since he’s her grandfather. She thought Rachel would be okay if she got good news about her grandmother. He didn’t give in to her hint. EJ wanted to get the vote for the hospital. She told him that she couldn’t deliver Brady’s vote and called him heartless. He knew how much John meant to his family and that Johnny would be devastated to lose his grandfather. EJ didn’t like that he couldn’t comfort Johnny. He walked out the room. Rachel went in the living room so Kristen talked to her about John. Rachel was upset to hear the news. Kristen wanted to know if she wanted to talk. Rachel didn’t feel good. Her stomach was hurting since the tea party. She admitted that she heard a gunshot. It didn’t happen in a dream.

Marlena told John that he was a hero to her and Bo. Carrie walked in the room and said he was a hero to everyone. They hugged each other, and Marlena broke down. Austin stayed behind to watch Noah’s graduation, but she had to be there. There were flashbacks of John and Carrie together. Carrie thought his greatest power wasn’t being a superhero. His power was being a dad. Thanks to John she had two amazing fathers. There were more flashbacks of John and Carrie together. Carrie touched John’s hand, and he moved a little. Carrie and Marlena looked at each other. Abe walked in the room and was happy to see Carrie. They reunited before Carrie and Marlena left Abe alone with John. There were flashbacks of John and Abe through the years. Abe told John that they were family and always would be. Belle and Johnny ran into each other at the town square. She told him that she was glad that the last words she said to her father were “I love you.” Belle warned him that he didn’t want to leave anything unsaid to his father. Johnny got upset and told her that his father was evil. Later, Belle arrived at the hospital and saw Carrie. They embraced each other. Carrie told her that John squeezed her hand. She believed he was going to make it. Marlena was by John’s side and told him not to leave her ever again. EJ spotted Johnny at the town square and called out to him. Johnny tried to walk away. EJ went after him and stumbled before falling on the ground. Johnny rushed to him. EJ pulled himself up, and Johnny walked away from him. Kate arrived at the pub and told Roman that the doctors hoped Philip would regain consciousness soon. Roman told her about his conversation with Johnny. He said that he didn’t shoot EJ, but Roman wasn’t sure he believed him. Kristen asked Rachel what she remembered about the night EJ was shot. Rachel told her that she woke up and heard yelling. She went downstairs and saw Johnny fighting with EJ while he was holding a gun.
