Well, the good news is, your brother made it through the surgery. But it was tough. And he’s stable now.

Why do I get the sense that there’s bad news?

Well, the bullet caused a lot of damage internally, so EJ’s not out of the woods yet. The next 24 hours will be critical in his survival. [soft orchestration] announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “Days of Our Lives.”

I feel like you’re doing that thing where you’re talking about me, but there’s plausible deniability. Just FYI, very passive-aggressive. Although, as it turns out, you do have to be extra vigilant tonight.

Because there is a killer amongst us.

Somebody tried to murder EJ DiMera. [tense music]

Chad said that he was still alive when he arrived at University Hospital. He was still in surgery when I left.

Then I better get dressed and get over there.

You want to know? Fine. Rafe kicked me out of the house. Yeah. Do you know what? I get it.

I’m so sorry, Jada. I was wondering how he was gonna react when he got the news, and… I mean, I knew he was gonna be upset, but I was just hoping that, you know, considering the circumstances, that he would be– be a little bit more understanding.

[scoffs] He wasn’t understanding at all. He was angry. He was hurt. He was being held captive, while his beloved fiancée was cheating on him with you.

Really? Jada slept with Shawn Brady? You mean the brooding hunk with piercing blue eyes and the jawline like Robert Pattinson? Sorry. Sorry. Your–your jawline is amazing too. And I take your silence as a yes. And I’m guessing Jada hooked up with Shawn after Arnold put her through the wringer. Well, that’s exactly right. I mean, your sick, twisted doppelganger treated Jada like crap. It makes sense why she’d seek the comfort of another man.

I know that Jada went through a lot.

She was devastated. Listen to me. She is such a good woman. And she had her heart broken into a gajillion pieces. You need to forgive her.

I honestly don’t know if I can.

I really need to get dressed and get to the hospital. My brother could be dying. And I’ve got to check on EJ. I need to check on Rachel before–

I was at Brady’s. His father is missing, and I wanted to see how he was holding up.

EJ and I spoke briefly. He was in one of his moods, and he said he wanted to be left alone, so I left him alone.

Someone tried to murder EJ, meaning…

He’s not dead. That hoity-toity alpha male is still alive. So I guess I overstated things when I said there was a killer in our midst. More like a would-be killer. Unless, of course, EJ doesn’t make it. Then it’s just your garden variety 12-part podcast series killer.

All right, I get it. Just tell me how it happened.

He was shot point-blank in the chest in his own home. As soon as I heard the news, I raced over to the mansion to try and get the scoop.

And what was it?

Well, the police were pretty tight-lipped. All I got was that his injuries were quite serious, and they suspect he might not make it.

Good. That bastard deserves a one-way ticket to hell.

So what are we dealing with, then? You said the bullet did a lot of damage?

It punctured one of EJ’s lungs. And although we were able to repair the damaged tissue area, he lost a lot of blood. But he’s very lucky because the bullet just missed his heart.

OK. Can I see him?

Yes, but just for a little bit, OK?

Chad, is there anything I can do for you while you’re in there?

Just say a prayer for my brother.

You don’t think you can forgive her? Come on, primo. Don’t you think you’re being a little unfair here? Jada was a victim, just like you. And that woman loves you so much.

Yeah, just not enough to tell the difference between me and that lowlife Feniger? Look, I went from being a stand-up guy who was crazy about her to some lowlife bastard who dumped her at the altar?

OK, look, I know that it was a stretch for her to believe that, but–

Jada, you didn’t know that EJ was holding Rafe captive. You thought that Arnold Feniger was Rafe. We all did. Arnold Feniger, the guy that was acting like a total creep, the guy who left you at the altar.

That was Rafe’s point. Just kept going on and on about how I should have known the difference. I’m a detective, his fiancé. I should have– I should have figured it out.

Listen to me, you are being way too hard on yourself right now. You are.

And you are being way too kind. Which I do appreciate. You know, I’m– I’m really glad that I ran into you.

Yeah, well, it wasn’t a coincidence. I came here to track you down.

It’s work-related. There’s been a high-profile shooting.

And after speaking with EJ, what did you do?

I went upstairs to check on my sleeping daughter. And then I took a shower, and I checked on Rachel one more time. Then I went back to my room. I started drying my hair, when a cop knocked on my door and told me what had happened.

You didn’t hear a gunshot?

No, like I said, I was taking a shower and drying my hair.

Why?

Why were you taking a shower?

What kind of question is that? I always take a shower before bed.

You sure there was no other reason?

Like what?

Like washing off blood or gunshot residue.

Wow. I don’t think I realized just how much you hated EJ. I mean, I knew you hated him. I just didn’t know you hated him, hated him.

Of course I hate him, hate him. He sent me to prison for a crime that I didn’t commit and then, in his Machiavellian way, ruined my marriage to Stefan. And on top of all of that, he kidnapped my brother and replaced him with a skeezy, lecherous lookalike. He definitely got what was coming to him.

Well, that’s debatable, of course. Tell me, who do you think did the deed?

No idea. But whoever it was, they’re a hero in my book. That bitch-ass clown needed to pay.

Can I quote you on that?

You know, it’s getting late. If you want to go home, I’m sure Chad would understand.

Oh, I– I thought I would stay. He doesn’t have anyone here, and he’s really shaken up, so…

Yeah, I imagine this has brought back a lot of terrible memories for him.

He was talking a lot about losing Abigail.

Well, that was devastating, of course. But I was really thinking about EJ. He was shot before by one of Clyde Weston’s men.

How many lives has that man destroyed?

At the time, everybody thought that EJ didn’t make it, that he had died from his injuries, and then later found out that his father had actually revived him, and he had recuperated in secret for years.

But Chad thought he was dead the entire time?

Yeah. And even though they have not always had the best relationship, I know Chad loves his brother and is so afraid to lose him again.

Hey, brother. I know you’re resting, but I just wanted you to know that you’re not alone, that I’m here for you. [soft music] I’ll always be here for you.

Well, we both know that’s not true. Or have you’ve forgotten what you did to Victor Kiriakis and to my ex-girlfriend, Haley?

JJ, you know very well Haley Chen’s death was an accident, a terrible accident. And not to speak ill of the victim, but the number of people in this town with a reason to take a shot at EJ could fill Horton Town Square.

I’m quoting you for my story on the shooting. What was it you called EJ again, a bitch-ass clown?

You can’t use what I said. That was off the record. If you publish that, people are– [softly] People are going to think that I shot him.

But you didn’t, right? I mean, surely you must have some sort of alibi, like a movie ticket, a wristband from a Princess Diana-themed booze cruise?

OK, so you mean to tell me that this gorgeous, badass woman is head over heels in love with you, and you’re in love with her– Look, I know you’re angry and hurt and frustrated. But come on. Don’t take it out on Jada. If you want to direct your anger at someone, direct it at EJ DiMera.

Not yet. I imagine it’ll be pretty hard to narrow down a list of suspects. So many people hate that guy.

Yeah, and I feel like we know most of them. Where did this happen?

Right in his own living room. [tense music]

He was sure in a hurry. And I mean, really, what does somebody have to take care of at this time of night?

Are there any other questions, Detective?

Just one. You said your daughter slept through the entire evening. I assume that means she can’t verify any of what you said.

Obviously not. But let me make myself clear. I did not shoot my brother. But someone did. And you need to find out who that was, Detective, before they get away with murder.

[scoffs] I stand corrected. I pray that’s all it was. Now, if we are done here, I am gonna go upstairs and check on my daughter, and then I’m gonna call Chad and find out how my brother is doing.

Yeah, we’re good, for now. Just stay out of the living room. It’s an active crime scene. I don’t want anything disturbed.

Why would I leave town when all I want is for you to find whoever did this to my brother and make sure that they spend the rest of their lives behind bars?

Hi. I’m calling in regard to EJ DiMera. He was brought in earlier tonight with a gunshot wound. I was hoping to get an update on his condition. No, I’m not currently family, but I used to be. Wait, so you were just talking to him, and then he started to have a seizure?

He was fine one minute, and then the next– Maybe I shouldn’t have gone in there.

The shooting. You know, I– I printed that article this morning. I’m sure it stirred up a lot of angry emotions in people that my brother had wronged. I basically just said, like, look at all the horrible stuff he’s done and gotten away with it, and, you know, then someone shot him. I feel like I instigated it.

OK. OK. I’m not trying to be unkind to your brother. But come on, you have to– his actions are responsible for what happened, Chad. Not the article. Come on. Hey. Hey. Please. Aren’t you suffering enough about this without blaming yourself?

Yeah. OK. I’ll stop doing that, then, blaming myself. I’m just scared. I don’t want to lose my brother. [soft music]

Honestly, I’m not sure, but… he’s been acting strangely all night.

Strangely, like, “we should be worried he’s Arnold Feniger again” strangely?

[scoffs] No. No. He just was making this excuse about why he wasn’t home. And then, I don’t know, his body language wasn’t aligned with his words. And– and then he said something later about making EJ pay.

Oh, my God. You think it was him? You think he shot EJ?

I mean, he hates the guy with a passion, that’s for sure.

Yeah, well, so does Gabi. And when I ran into her earlier, she certainly wasn’t making a secret of it. [dramatic music]

Come on, EJ, do us all a favor and die. [sighs] Just…

Gabi. Hey, I was just about to call you. Did you hear about EJ?

Leo told me. Do you know if he made it through surgery?

I haven’t had a chance to check in yet. I’ve been a little busy at the scene.

Ah. How’s that going? Do you have any idea who shot him?

Look, you don’t want to do this. It’s too early to know anything for sure. [phone beeps]

Sorry. It’s my sister. I don’t know what to tell her.

Hey. We got the seizure under control. But those kind of episodes are very taxing on the body and could impede his recovery. So to prevent them from happening, we put him in a medically-induced coma.

Well, Father, I think we can safely say it’s official. Practically everybody in this town hates me. Even Belle, who showed up tonight wearing a wire trying to entrap me. Mind you, I could tell that she was conflicted, unlike the rest of them. Oh, yes. I can almost feel the mob of bloodthirsty villagers out there preparing to storm the castle, demanding my head on a pike. And it wouldn’t surprise me if Rafe Hernandez and his psychotic sister Gabriella are the ones leading the charge. [suspenseful music]

Gabi, you there? Gabi, Rafe? Anybody home? [tense music]

[chuckles] Oh, of course there are plenty of other people who despise me. Kristen, Jada Hunter, Paulina Price, and her offspring, of course. My very own daughter-in-law, Chanel, who took me to task for her adoption woes.

And then there’s your beloved Giovanni… who now thinks that I am a monster thanks to Kate and Roman dropping that bombshell on you.

And then there is Ava Vitali, who I imagine has it in for me as well. She’s undoubtedly still fuming over what happened to her at Aremid. Although rather unfair to blame me when Kristen was far more culpable in her predicament. [tense music]

[sighs] Well, maybe nothing is, but, well, Johnny and I were just together at the square and he said that he was going to see his Grandpa Roman at the pub. But that was a while ago, and I’ve called him and I’ve texted him and nothing.

Well, honey, I’m sure Roman, he’s just plying him with chowder and pie. They’re not even paying attention to the time or their phones.

Still. [sighs] You know what? Maybe I should just go by the pub just to make sure everything is OK.

EJ? EJ? You here? [tense music]

[groaning]

Oh, I am just finalizing some plans for the hospital’s fundraiser while Dr. Evans is out of town. Every time I think that I’m finished, something else pops up. [chuckles]

Well, I know you’ve been working hard. Thank you. Really stepped up for the hospital.

Oh, I just hope that we’re able to raise enough funds to keep it solvent, at least for a little while.

Yeah. Well, I will just forward these revised spreadsheets over to you. Take your time, no rush, but look at them when you can.

Well, I’m not even halfway through a 36-hour shift. I’m on call for the ER. But the biggest thing I’ve had today is a consultation for a foreign object extraction. Lima bean up the nose.

Oh. [chuckles] Lovely. Actually, my brother Aaron had a similar thing with an action figure. Little GI Joe went spelunking. [chuckles]

Wow.

Yeah. Mark was in med school and he almost quit on the spot because he was like, that kid screamed so loud, I’m not going to be able to take that if that happens in my job.

Yeah.

Well, you know, my patient was unnaturally calm, kind of like the ER today, so I don’t mind looking at them now while it’s quiet.

It’s my brother. No, he’s been–uh, he’s been shot in the chest. Um, there’s a lot of blood. Huh? Yeah, s-sorry. EJ. EJ DiMera. We’re at the mansion. Yeah, he’s– he’s still breathing, but he’s not responsive. OK, can you please just send help fast? Please. Send an a–send an ambulance.

It was a struggle, I’m not going to lie, yeah.

You know, I noticed that, um, the two of you have been spending a lot of time together.

Yes. Working on the fundraiser. A-and I’m honestly so relieved that he and I are on good terms, you know? I mean, it’s a miracle that he’s even speaking to me after what I put him through. So–[sighs]

Are you aware that, um, he was seeing my daughter Stephanie?

Oh, honey, I understand. I mean good Lord, what your husband has been through lately.

Yeah. Yeah, it’s been a lot. I mean, he was in such a bad place even before the adoption fell through. You know, finding out how he was conceived has changed the way that he looks at his father, at everyone who kept that secret from him. Even himself.

Himself? What do you mean?

Well, I mean, he knows that it isn’t logical, but he also realizes that he wouldn’t be here if his father hadn’t– [sighs] You know. And well, he’s just– he’s struggling, Mama, and I don’t know what to say or what to do.

Chanel, honey, sometimes, all you really need to do is be there. Like I’m being here for you, OK?

Yeah.

You’ve been going through it too.

Thank you. I–I’ve been so worried about Johnny that I haven’t even taken the time to mourn our loss. You know, I felt so bad when Amy Choi said that the adoption was going to fall through because of EJ. And just, Johnny–you know, the first thing that he said to me was that he was sorry as if it was somehow his fault.

[scoffs] And of course, it wasn’t. Johnny can’t help who his daddy is or what he does. And I’ll have none of this sins of the father nonsense. There’s only one person to blame, and that’s EJ.

I know. And that is exactly what I said to Johnny and to his father. [soft dramatic music]

You talked to EJ?

I did. I wanted him to know exactly how much Johnny was suffering because of him. And, um, he told me that you gave him hell too. And did I tell you that Johnny said that his father was dead to him?

Mm, strong words.

Mm-hmm. And he meant them too. And–[sighs] God, I feel so guilty for thinking this, but if EJ were out of our lives, we would all be so much better off.

I hear you. I felt the same way about Lani’s father, Ray. Ooh, I didn’t want him to make her life miserable, so– [sighs] You know what? You know what? All you need to do right now is just be there. You let me handle the rest. Now, I promise, I promise that I am not going to let EJ ruin this adoption for you.

Yeah. Well, thank you for saying that, Mama. But at this point, I don’t think that there is anything that will change Amy’s mind. Yeah, not if there is any chance that EJ will have any influence over the baby’s life. There is no way that she is going to let us adopt Sophia and Tate’s baby. [tense music]

Chanel and Johnny’s adoption fell through because of you and your litany of crimes!

It’s kind of ironic, though, huh? Kristen’s mother wanted everyone to believe that I was in Hong Kong while she was holding me captive in Aremid, and now, off I go.

[chuckles] I thought that you recanted that story.

I did, to the police, because I really had no other choice, even though Kristen and her mother now are getting away with what they did to me.

I must say I admire your determination. But like you just said, we both know why that’s not going to happen. If you spill on me, Kristen and Brady’s precious daughter will be taken away from them, and all the blame goes to you.

If you’re referring to Ms. Blake’s part in all this, I wouldn’t hold your breath. I have it on very good authority that she’s been removed from the equation.

Why were you stopping by the house so late?

Uh, I don’t know if you saw the, uh– saw “The Spectator,” but there was an article about my family, and especially unflattering for EJ. And he figured I must have signed off on it, so called me and left me a pissed off voicemail. Went to the house to talk to him and tell him that, you know, as editor, I have to–I have to be impartial. You know, that’s my job. And I’ve got to– if it’s newsworthy, I’ve got to print it, even if it makes my family look bad, you know? You know what.

So what? What are you saying? You’re saying eventually I’m not going to be as angry about this as I am right now? Because I really don’t see that happening.

No. But I do think you will find a way to understand your mother in time. And why we honored her wishes, at least I hope you will. But your dad, that’s a whole different deal, man. That anger may never go away. And I can tell you this, mine sure as hell hasn’t. And there’s a strong part of me that wants to go in that box, open it up, get out my gun and shoot this SOB.

I mean, if it was just the cheating, maybe in time, Alex could forgive her. But lying to his face like that, making a bloody fool out of him by keeping that secret for God knows how long.

I imagine she and Philip realized they had unresolved feelings for each other. I mean, they did split up so abruptly for reasons I’m still not clear on. But, God, I just wish they hadn’t snuck around behind Alex’s back. He didn’t deserve that.

Look, Alex and I haven’t always gotten along, but he did take my side against Philip in court. And, God, he took it like an absolute champ when he found out he wasn’t really Victor’s son. Didn’t fight me. Didn’t blame me. Just graciously stepped aside.

Yeah, he’s a– he’s a really great guy.

And after the way Theresa messed him around, I mean, he was finally happy with Stephanie. And they went through so much to get back together. For her to betray him like that, God, he must be devastated.

After my fight with him, I ran into Sarah, and I told her everything.

I don’t necessarily disagree, but it isn’t that simple.

Well, it is that simple for me because it happened to me. I bought into a phony letter misrepresenting Victor’s wishes, and it turned my entire world upside down. I’m not letting it happen to my cousin.

And that’s fair. But, Alex, this isn’t just about Titan. If Xander finds out that Sarah’s been lying to him all this time, he will never forgive her. Their marriage will be over.

I’m not getting it. Why did she even lie?

The way Sarah explained it, Kate and Philip argued that even though Victor’s letter was a forgery, it was still somewhat truthful. They believe that Victor wanted Philip to run Titan. But when he wrote his will, Philip was struggling with mental illness, and so Victor couldn’t put him in charge. And Sarah didn’t think it was fair to penalize Philip for that.

So Sarah cares more about what’s fair to Philip than what’s best for her own husband.

She does care about what’s best for Xander, what’s best for everyone.

How is that best for everyone?

Sarah was worried if Xander were alone at the top, all of that power would go to his head. But if Philip were there, he could act as a check, stop him from doing anything crazy or illegal.

Shouldn’t Sarah be able to trust her own husband?

If Xander were alone at the top, would you trust him? [dramatic music] There was also the strong chance that if Xander found out what Philip had done, he would either prosecute him or kill him. And I didn’t want to be responsible for that.

So you’re just pretending that you don’t know anything.

[sighs] I don’t like it either.

And, Alex, believe me, if this lie had directly affected you or our relationship, just like that nonsense about me sleeping with Philip, I would have shut it down from the beginning. But it doesn’t.

No. Bottom line. If you tell the truth, it’ll be World War III in your family. And all the stability and success that you’re a part of at Titan, it’ll be completely destroyed along with Sarah and Xander’s marriage.

I guess he owed some people money. He was in a bad way. Saw an easy way out. And he confided in Holly about it. And when I found out– well, when she told me, I promised her that I wouldn’t tell anyone. And last night, I broke that promise. And I told Julie that Doug was the thief.

Well? Why are you so worried something might screw this up?

Oh, uh, well, there’s– there’s no reason in particular that I’m worried. It’s just, you know, anyone in my position would be, you know, a little nervous. It would mean the world to me and my husband if you would give us your blessing to adopt Sophia and Tate’s baby.

I don’t even know what I was thinking. I’ll admit, I– I was upset about how much time Doug and Holly seem to be spending together. And I was also upset to find out that Melinda Trask knew that Holly was covering for Doug. Like, imagine how I felt thinking Holly could go down as an accomplice because that jerk had to go and steal jewelry from Julie Williams, of all people, his grandfather’s widow. I mean, I was freaked out.

I’m sure you were.

So yeah, OK, without even thinking about it, I was dialing Mrs. Williams’ number. And I thought I would just, like, drop a couple hints, sort of like, guide her to the truth. And before I knew it, the words were just pouring out of me. I rationalized it by telling myself that I was doing this for Holly, like, protecting her. And I know that’s not the whole reason I did it.

You wanted to punish Doug.

Yeah. Yeah. I wanted to punish Doug. But I ended up punishing myself because sooner or later, Holly is going to find out that I’m the one that told Julie. And when she does, she’s never going to forgive me.

But she didn’t. Julie didn’t find out from Melinda Trask.

So, Mom, what are you saying?

Oh, I think it’s self-explanatory. And Sophia, Tate, it gives me no pleasure to tell you this, but we are either going to have to find a suitable, respectable couple to adopt this child, or you two are going to have to raise this baby yourselves. [tense music]
