Oh, yeah. He turned in a while ago. Actually, he’s probably up reading his, like, ,-page book on Oppenheimer. He just watched the movie, and now he’s obsessed.

Aw. I’m so glad he’s doing OK.

Yeah. He’s doing very well.

Mm-hmm. So…what’s up?

Well, to be honest, I’m actually kind of freaking out. I–I just had to talk to someone. I don’t know what to do about–

I don’t believe it. I mean, when–when you said that maybe Fiona was the one that was driving the car that hit Sarah, I didn’t think there was any way in hell that that could be possible, but now…

I think I hit someone.

She was the one behind the wheel. I wasn’t the one driving the car. It was Fiona.

So on the way to set earlier, there was a little extra time, so I went and I stopped by Sweet Bits. And then on my way back, I bent down to tie my shoe, and then all of a sudden, my back, it just went out.

Just like that, huh?

Yeah. Crazy, right? I mean, I’ve never had any issues with my back before. And you know how much of a yogi I am. So it was just really bad timing. And then Abe and Kate, they ended up having to cancel my love scenes with Alex for today. No choice.

I know. I heard.

Yeah, we didn’t even get a chance to rehearse them. [dramatic music]

Chanel, I–

Hey there, Chanel, Johnny boy. What’s going on, girl? How you feeling?

[sighs]

You–you slept with Alex?

Hey, I am not judging, OK? I just thought that you both agreed that you wouldn’t, you know, go there.

I–I was at the hospital earlier to do some PR work for “Body & Soul.”

So Alex asked me to rehearse this love scene with him in the hospital room.

Oh, I see. So he pulled the whole, come have sex– I mean come rehearse this love scene with me?

[sighs] Exactly.

Mm. Wait, wait, wait, wait. Wait a minute. Wait a minute. Are you telling me you guys slept together on set on the hospital bed?

I remember. [tense music] I was–I was–I was in the passenger seat of the car during–during the night of the accident. Fiona must have moved me and put me in the driver’s seat when she took me home that night.

I don’t believe it. All this time, I thought I was guilty, Eric. I was ready to go to prison for a decade.

[sighs] You know what? Thank God you remembered just in the nick of time. I mean, another hours, and you would’ve accepted that plea.

If it wasn’t for you, I never would have known that I was– that I wasn’t the one driving that night, that I wasn’t the one that hit her, I wasn’t the one that left her there. I would have never known that I was innocent of this if it hadn’t been for you.

She was incensed with me over these death scenes I wrote at “Body & Soul” where Charlemagne falls stories down an elevator shaft, screaming the entire way down. [sighs] I am telling you, this show is messing with my head. I am up all night every night, eating muesli and watching old telenovelas. Is that why you’re here, because I’ve been seen muttering to myself all over town?

No, but we should talk about that. But “Body & Soul” is the reason I’m here.

Mm, I’m feeling a little doped up, actually. The muscle relaxers that Kayla gave me are working. My back is feeling a little bit better. But…[sighs] I’m really, really sorry, you guys.

Hey, it’s not your fault. I’m just glad you’re OK. I would have come to check on you sooner, but I had to do those scenes with Bonnie.

Alex, you seem to be in a particularly good mood today.

Well, I mean, I guess Bonnie being so elated that she’s not getting fired kind of rubbed off on me.

Anyway, Kate said that she would reschedule our love scenes for when you’re feeling a little bit better.

Yeah. Yeah, we’ll see how I feel after these meds wear off. But Kayla says that I should be feeling better by tomorrow.

Great! Great. You guys will be undressing each other in no time.

[chuckles]

OK, let’s put this in perspective here. Like I said before, it’s not like this came out of the blue. I mean, you guys were in a relationship before, so, you know, there’s some chemistry there, right?

Yeah, yeah, but Alex was so adamant about, “I think it’s best if we’re just friends.”

Well, he obviously changed his mind.

I don’t know if he did.

Obviously, he did. [laughs]

Mm.

So what did he say after it happened?

Well, we didn’t even get a chance to talk about it. I had to go deal with a PR crisis. And our now former star Hattie stormed off the set without filming her exit scene.

Oof, so you had to make sure that news didn’t get out, right?

Exactly. [sighs] Jada, my whole job is containing fallout. So why am I so bad at doing it in my own life?

I– I don’t understand this. [dramatic music] You were driving the car? [baby crying]

Oh, my sweetheart. She sounds upset. Let me go and take care of–

My father, he fought tooth and nail for me from the beginning, even when I didn’t want to fight for myself. I mean, the facts seemed apparent. But you, you– you knew something was– was wrong about that night, and you kept digging. Eric, if–if you hadn’t– if you hadn’t told me that Fiona and I left that bar that night together, I probably wouldn’t have remembered anything.

Listen, I’m sorry. I’m sorry that Fiona betrayed you the way she did.

[sighs]

Crazy thing is, is I actually– I actually cared about her. I leaned on her when this whole thing happened.

She was the one that told me not to go to the police. And I didn’t understand that at the time, but I sure as hell do now.

Fiona’s living in her own hell.

[sighs] You know she came to visit me? She told me that she had something to confess. I wonder if she was gonna tell me the truth.

Well, obviously, she didn’t.

So you’re telling me that after you hit Sarah and left her for dead, you just–you, what, you– you dragged a drunken Brady into the driver’s seat and let him take the fall for you?

I panicked, Xander. I was desperate. And it’s not as though I meant to hit Sarah. It was an accident.

Oh, you–you drove drunk. You knew you were drunk!

I was a hell of a lot more sober than Brady.

Oh. Oh, wow. Really? Yes. Yes, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, please bear in mind that the drunk driver was ever so slightly less sloshed than the drunk passenger.

Listen to me, Xander. After it happened, I did stay with Sarah. I was going to call for help. Really, I was. I had my phone in my hand. And then you arrived. I’m not a monster. I would never have left her there.

But you did leave her there!

[sobs]

You fled the scene! And pinned it on an innocent man. I mean– and then you made yourself completely indispensable to us, never once letting on that– that you were responsible for all Sarah’s suffering! I mean, my God, I– I almost broke Brady’s legs with a baseball bat. I was gonna murder him!

And I stopped you.

Yeah, you stopped it. But you’re still too much of a coward to tell me the truth.

I couldn’t tell you.

Arrow eats a KIT KAT bar while doing crunches. Oh, Faith feeds a shirtless Arrow some milk of magnesia in bed. Aha! Here it is.

OK, so as we all know, Hattie was, like, a total prima donna who complained endlessly and was a real pain in the tush.

Oh.

So we had to kill her off. But she stormed off the set in true diva fashion before we taped her very dramatic death scene but not before cursing out production and taking a bunch of little sandwiches with her from the lunch buffet.

[laughing] Oh, no!

Yeah, “oh, no,” is right. And now yours truly has to come up with a solution. I mean, we were prepared for this possibility. But a bunch of people chitchatting about the death of a very important character off camera, it’s just so undramatic, you know?

Mm.

Especially when we have… alternatives.

Well, if you have some alternatives, that– [jazzy music] No. You–you don’t want me to talk to Hattie, do you?

No, no!

Oh. [laughs]

We do not want to be tangling with Hattie. This is a much simpler ask. Dr. Evans, we need you to fall down an elevator shaft.

What’s the matter, G? You don’t seem very happy about me and Alex getting back to work.

Oh, no, no, no, no, no. I just–I just don’t– I don’t want you to rush into anything. You know, your health is more important than this job.

I know, I know, but everybody is counting on me. And plus, you know, it costs money every time they have to move scenes around.

Well, that is very thoughtful of you to be so, you know, concerned about the budget.

Mm. All right, you–you OK to get Chanel home?

Yeah, yeah. I think I’m good.

OK, cool.

Yeah.

Steph, I am happy to be your sounding board. Really, I am. But I feel like– don’t you think you should be talking to Alex about this, not me?

I’m just– I’m just a bit rattled. Actually, freaked out is more like it.

I know, I know, but look, look, look. Like I said before, look, you slept with a guy that you used to go out with. It’s not exactly a scandal. And hey, it–it might be the start of something great.

No, of course not. Xander, please, try and understand. You’re the only good thing that I ever had in my life. And I’ve fouled it all up, almost from the get-go. One minute, I was feeding you porridge and reading you “Peter Rabbit,” and the next minute, I was on some bender and too ashamed to come home and face my little boy. I knew I was a terrible mother. You’d have been better off without me.

Oh. Oh, is that what you told yourself?

And then when Sarah invited me to your wedding, I thought it would be my second chance.

I understand that addiction is an illness, one that you’ve struggled with your whole life. And so yeah, you– you did what addicts sometimes do. You fell off the wagon.

But you didn’t have to drive drunk. And you didn’t have to leave Sarah lying in the street. And you didn’t have to frame an innocent man.

See, that’s what I’ll never understand! That’s what I’ll never forgive.

Because, as you said, you already turned him down once. And he thought you might be more receptive to my overtures, given that we have such a wonderful– well, I don’t know that it’s a friendship, per se. You are my therapist. But we have a great rapport, don’t we?

Look, it’ll take all of an hour. The set is down the hall from your office. We could do this on your lunch break. Think about it. You say a few lines. you fall on a mattress. Bing, bang, boom, your acting career begins and ends in the span of eating a poke bowl.

You just don’t quit, do you?

I am bad at so much, but I’m good at being persistent. I’m also really annoying about it. Plus, we are on a shoestring budget. But the fans will go ballistic if they don’t get to see Charlemagne plunge to her untimely death.

Oh, right? No wonder Johnny was so worried about Chanel and me, not that that would ever, ever happen between her and I. You know, it’s not like you and me. [soft music]

Look, let’s address the elephant in the room. Clearly, we have a physical attraction. There’s always been. But we both know that that’s not enough to build a relationship on.

Leo, I am psychologically astute. And I am immune to manipulation. That’s what I do for a living. So this–this emotional blackmail will not work on me.

You know, we have spent so much time arguing about why I won’t do this. In that amount of time, we could have done the scene. So I guess I concede.

Mom, hi. I was wondering, can you come down to the police station? There’s some good news that Brady and I want to share with you.

You know, I wonder sometimes whether or not Xander knew if his mother was involved all along. [dramatic music]

He was so angry, Eric. He literally wanted to kill me. No, he had no idea.

Yeah, well, we’re about to find out. And he’s gonna find out the hard way.

You know, Mum, the– the rage I felt towards Brady, I– The way I feel now, it feels nothing like that.

Ah! I was gonna confront her at the hospital. Then I realized there’s not really any point. It’s not like she would admit it. [scoffs] Chanel made me feel like a complete fool for being jealous at all. Well, turns out, I was right. Hmm. I was right, damn it! [glass shatters]

[sighs]

I’m glad you did. I’ll hug you, too, as soon as you get your bracelets off. [laughter]

Right. I know. I can’t–I can’t believe it. It’s like I’m getting ten years of my life back just like that.

You know, I understand why Sarah was so confused. She said that the person she saw behind the wheel, she thought was somebody she knew. So I–I assumed it was you. I’m so sorry. [dramatic music]

You two have been there for me every step of the way. And naturally, look, I’m relieved that it wasn’t me. It wasn’t me that hit Sarah. It wasn’t me that put her in that chair. But now I have to– I got to stay the course, and I got to stay in treatment. And I– I just want to make the most of this second chance that I’ve been given.

From Eric Brady. He was just here. He told me that he spoke to the waiter that served Brady that night and that you– you were with him. You were together at the bar. [dramatic music]

Really sucks that Uncle Eric and Nicole lied to her all these years about what really happened.

Well, Nicole was trying to protect her, and we all just went along with it.

And I know how much that hurt Holly, but that still doesn’t excuse what she tried to do to my dad.

And then we tell the world that the DA is hell-bent on prosecuting Brady for something that he didn’t do.

Oh, hold on. Better yet, we could go to EJ’s boss. I mean, if there’s one thing I know about Paulina Price, it’s that she doesn’t need another scandal. And then we make it clear that EJ, my brother, has gone rogue. I mean, he’s burying the fact that his own eyewitness has taken back her statement.

I just, uh… I mean, first of all, Abby, you know that I want to be married to you more than anything in the entire world. But I thought that when we got remarried, it would be with our children and our families.

Yeah, of course. Yeah. Yeah, in a perfect world. But we get to go home to Salem and– and tell them the good news, that we got married. But we also get to tell them that my memories came back if we do this.

That sounds amazing, but what if it doesn’t happen?

Relieved, I guess. I don’t know. Still processing.

And you will be for quite some time. And hopefully, you’ll be able to let your mother help you. And maybe Eric too. * *

She booked me a hotel room near where they live.

Yeah, it was your favorite. [Abigail laughs] Thomas was all about it. Charlotte was a little too small, so you insisted that this old man be the third member.

Oh, I can see it. I can see you as the stand-in for Left Eye.

Yeah. Um–[clears throat] Anyway, and I was being the– the dutiful dad. And I, um, you know, I did the whole dance routine. [Abigail laughs] And, uh, you know, I think I was holding my own. At least, that’s what everybody else would have said.

Until it got to the end of the song and I lost my footing.

Yeah, and I learned the meaning of the lyrics. I chased a waterfall and I paid the price. [Abigail laughs] I fell hard, hard, and I was drenched and freezing.

That was good. [Abigail laughs] Yeah, and, um… [inhales deeply] Uh, anyway, it was– it was just a really wonderful moment. And the kids couldn’t stop laughing. And I don’t know if I’ve ever heard you laugh that hard. [soft upbeat music]

You’re, um– you’re a really good husband, Chad. And a good father too.

That’s because I had you by my side. [mysterious music] [Abigail sighs softly]

Well… getting to meet Abigail again… was unique. In the first place, she looks nothing, absolutely nothing like the Abigail that we knew. And when I looked at her, she had the eyes of a stranger. And she was very cold to me, Maggie.

Well, maybe– maybe she was just feeling awkward being back. You know, not remembering her life here, not recognizing anyone. But didn’t you say that she remembered her wedding vows?

Well, so she says. So of course, Chad is hoping she’ll remember more.

Yeah, God willing. Please, tell me how Sarah’s doing.

Ah. Oh, Julie, she’s putting on a brave face for sure. But she’s struggling to adapt. And I’m– I’m trying my best to help however I can.

Darling, you of all people in the world are the one to help her. You walked around on crutches for years, and you walked again. Not to mention being paralyzed more recently and getting healed.

Yeah, well, I was lucky to have the surgery that gave me the ability to walk. But I don’t know. As it stands right now, I– I don’t think my daughter will get that miracle. [tense music]

Well, as you likely know, my brother is in a world of trouble and I’ve just kind of been clinging to the hope that there’s more to the story about what happened that night.

[chuckles] Like what?

I don’t know. That’s why I’m here. To find out more about my brother’s actions that night. And lucky enough, I ran into you. So I was hoping that it might be possible if you could, you know, kind of fill in the blanks for me. [tense jazzy music]

Well, I don’t know what I can tell you that you don’t already know.

Well, why don’t we just start from the beginning? [suspenseful jazzy music]

All right. Well, let’s see. I spent most of the day with my son and his wife. They just got married, and we were still celebrating. And then I got a text from Brady asking me to join him here.

And by this point, you two have been together for a while.

Right. Actually, I was planning on ending things with him that night.

Why is that?

Well, I was in a better place with my son and his family. I didn’t know Brady from Adam when I first met him, but eventually I found out who he was and, more importantly, about his contentious relationship with my son.

Right. So you came here, and–

And Brady was already drunk, actually having a very heated discussion with the waiter, which I managed to de-escalate with a very generous tip.

I heard Brady caused quite a scene. [Fiona sighs] So what happened after that?

Well, he calmed down, he had a couple more drinks, we talked, he left. And, well, you know what happened after that.

No, actually, I don’t.

Oh, isn’t it obvious? He got in his car and he hit Sarah. She ID’d him to the police.

That she did. See, I still have questions.

[chuckles] Such as?

Well, earlier, you implied that Brady, he left here alone. But the waiter, he told me that the two of you left here together.

How dare you accuse my wife of lying? She’s the most honest person I know.

Mm, except when it comes to the paternity of her children.

You smug son of a–

No, baby, it’s fine. It’s fine. [Xander clears throat] EJ…

Mm-hmm?

You’re right. I have been dishonest in the past, and it’s obviously not something I am proud of, which is why I can’t let my initial statement about Brady stand. I can’t, in all good conscience, let him go down for something that I’m no longer sure he did.

Well, that’s too bad, because you and your good conscience have already given a sworn statement, Brady has been arrested and charged, and a conviction has been guaranteed to the mayor. And I will not have egg on my face because you suddenly think your very definite memory is a false one.

So in other words, you’ll gladly convict an innocent man just to protect your fragile little ego. All hail the incorruptible justice system.

Oh, give it up, Xander. We all know that Brady is guilty. And I promise you this. If Sarah retracts her statement, I will have her arrested and charged with perjury. [tense music]

You know, it’s just so hard to see Sarah suffer the way that I did. Although she’s being very brave and stoic, I can see the pain in her eyes, Julie. I mean, I just hope that someday she’ll be able to see that her life is– it can be as rewarding as it was before.

Oh, I’m sure she will with you at her side and her little Victoria.

And not to mention Xander.

Wish that I could forget him.

Julie!

I’m sorry. Oh, not very gracious of me. I know you’re fond of him, Maggie.

He’s my son-in-law. And he’s the love of my daughter’s life. But I have to admit that he’s been obsessing over getting revenge on Brady.

Oh, yeah?

Yeah, But I think he’s– he’s let that go. And hopefully, he’s refocused his efforts on Sarah’s recovery. Especially now that Brady is facing justice.

What a turn of events that was.

Yeah.

I mean, Brady was off the hook. And then suddenly, Sarah remembers he’s the one driving the car that hit her. I mean… [sighs] I guess it’s fortuitous. I suppose.

What are you saying? [tense music] Are you saying that Sarah lied?

[Julie sighs]

It was mostly perfect here. But then I started to work a lot of hours, and I started to cause some problems.

I was feeling neglected?

Yes,

Mm.

Rightfully so. Then someone from your past showed up, this guy named Austin. He showed up on our doorstep. He was going through his own marital problems.

Oh. Oh, he and I didn’t–

No, no, no, no. He wanted to, but you stopped it.

Oh, good for me.

Yes, good for you. You behaved admirably.

Oh, I am relieved.

Me too. [Abigail laughs and sighs]

[sighs] But you know, it was, um… [soft upbeat jazzy music] We had some rough times. And, uh… we went through a lot of obstacles. But…

Yeah. And lucky for me, the two of you will do just about anything to save your sweet mama, whom I will deliver to you safe and sound as long as your sister comes through.

Yeah, uh… here’s the thing about that. Mrs. Chad DiMera, that don’t work for me. [tense music] The widow DiMera. That’s more like it.

That could get messy. It’s easier if he dies. That way, she inherits and I collect. Easy-peasy.

I’m just chilling here in supermax. It can’t get traced back to me.

What good is Chad’s fortune to you in here?

My lawyer’s been hard at work. With any luck, I should be out of here in plenty of time to collect my DiMera windfall.

How is that possible? I mean, you out of here? I mean, you’re a convicted murderer.

Ah, here’s the thing. With Abigail’s resurrection, there ain’t no murder victim. Hence, no murder conviction. [laughs] I mean, you don’t need to be a doctor ora lawyer to figure that one out.

What about your– your drug ring? I mean, the other stuff?

My lawyer has found enough procedural infractions that they’ll throw the whole case out. Suffice to say, I will soon be a free man.

You remember our life together?

Um, it’s–um, yeah. I don’t remember specific events, but I’m– [sighs] It’s like I can– I’m not remembering memories. I’m remembering feelings. Like, I know that I was here before. I remember being here. I remember the–the pitter-patter of the kids’ feet on the floor and the window. Like, the light, how the light came in the window. I–I feel like–for the first time, I feel like me. I feel like I’m Abigail Johanna Deveraux DiMera. I–I–[laughs] I can feel it in my body! [both laugh] Oh! Now, all I am saying is if I was hit by a car, paralyzed, and the driver drove away, I would be highly motivated to make sure he paid for what he did.

Well, I don’t think that Sarah would be dishonest to make that happen. And in fact, she confided to me that Xander asked her to lie about something and then she just flat-out refused.

Really?

Yeah.

Well, I’m sure justice is being served, but… I can’t rejoice over it because Brady’s a decent guy. And even if he is addicted to alcohol, that’s not a moral flaw. It’s just an illness, as you know very well.

Yeah, I do. I know that Brady is a good person, and I know he has a good heart. He just made a terrible decision. And as much as I don’t at all rejoice, as you put it, he’s being punished for that decision, a price that he has to pay.

And wants to pay, I hear?

Yes, he does. And you know, once he is incarcerated, I hope that Xander and Sarah can move forward with their lives and heal. [tense music]

EJ, Xander just told you that I’ve been on pain meds. My memory is a little mixed up lately.

Mm-hmm, and next week, you’ll say you came off the pain meds a little too early, and you’ll want to retract the retraction, and so on and so forth.

I won’t do that. I made a mistake. Please, you have to release Brady. [soft suspenseful music]

Fine. You made a mistake. A mistake that is going to cost you ten years behind bars.

Ten years? What are you talking about?

There’s a plea deal on the table. Brady has agreed to ten years in prison. And trust me, as DA, I will see to it that someone serves that sentence. If it’s not Brady, it’s going to be Sarah.

You think I’m just going to let you bully us into silence?

Try me. I have Sarah’s original statement, and I fully intend to use it to put Brady in prison. If you two want to stop me, go for it. I’ll just have Sarah take his place. I’ll leave the rest up to you.

I’m sorry, I guess I should have clarified. Brady did leave on his own initially, but then I went after him. You see, I was afraid he might be too drunk to drive. So I found him outside and I offered to call him a cab.

But he refused.

[sighs] Well, he insisted he was fine. I could see that he wasn’t, but he wouldn’t listen. So I let him go. If I’d known what was going to happen, Eric, I would have done everything humanly possible to stop him from driving. And I deeply regret that I didn’t. [suspenseful jazzy music]

How did you get home that night?

After Brady left, I took a cab back to my hotel. And then later, Xander called me to tell me about Sarah. [Fiona sighs] I can still hear the fear in his voice. It was just awful. And in fact-[sighs] I’d rather not keep reliving this, so if there’s nothing else–

Just one more thing. Were you drinking that night?

[scoffs] Was Idrinking that night?

That was the question, yes.

Well, the answer is no. I don’t drink, ever. I’m a recovering alcoholic.

As is Brady.

[sighs] Touché. But I assure you I haven’t had a drink in years.

So you didn’t partake with Brady? You just watched him drink?

[sighs] Like I said, we talked while he drank. And before you even think about it, Maggie and I stuck to sparkling cider for my son’s wedding. Feel free to ask around if you don’t believe me.

No, no, no, I don’t think that’ll be necessary.

Good. Because I must say this is starting to feel like the third degree.

Well, I’m just a curious person who’s looking out for his brother.

Right. I understand. And I hope that I have been of some help to you.

As for me, I shall take comfort in the fact that Sarah got her memory back, so hopefully, Abigail can get her memory back, too, especially now that they’re in Paris together.

Oh, let’s hope.

Hmm. Whether she remembers or not, she did swear when they returned, she will tell the children her mother’s alive. [suspenseful music]

That would obviously be an easier conversation if she had her memory back.

Ay, sounds like there’s a lot riding on this Paris trip.

Listen, that’s why I’m here. I need to ask you something, and I want you to be honest with me. [suspenseful music] Is Brady innocent? Are you covering for your mother-in-law?

God, I hope Brady’s brother bought my story. Otherwise–[sighs] Actually, let’s just not think about otherwise. [ominous music]

Well, I should get back to Sarah. It was so good catching up with you, Julie.

Oh, yes. I’m praying for your daughter, you know.

I’m doing the same for Abigail and Chad.

Yeah, I can’t believe that he had Abigail all this time. And we thought she was dead!

Yeah, well, he’s in supermax now, and he can’t hurt a single member of this family ever again.

I thought it was pretty self-explanatory.

Xander, perhaps I didn’t make myself clear the last time we spoke. The only way Sarah is going to get out of that wheelchair is if you free Brady. At which time, I will hand over Rolf’s miracle serum, and then voila, Sarah will be running the K by spring.

It’s a very intriguing proposal, Kristen. I suppose my only question is, why should I believe a word you say? [tense music]

Huh, you visited Gabi in her hospital room last night. Why?

Oh, just to inform her that her overbearing brother, Rafe Hernandez, warned me to stay away from her. I just wanted to make her aware of our little conversation, given that we all have to coexist in the same happy household. Well, at least until your divorce goes through.

Well, if I know Gabi well, and I think that I do, she wants nothing to do with you now that our marriage is over and she can’t use you anymore for revenge sex. But I would heed Rafe’s advice and stay the hell away from her.

You know, Gabi mentioned that it was you who filed for divorce.

So?

Well, if the marriage is truly over, why do I have to stay away from her? Why do you care?

Stefan told me he was going to file. We both agreed that our marriage was over, so it’s time to move forward, isn’t it? I retained counsel a while back, so he has to do the same, obviously. So–

It just feels so wrong sitting here with Daniel’s heart beating in my chest. I wouldn’t be here if he hadn’t have died. I guess it’s like I squandered the gift, you know.

Brady, you didn’t squander away anything. You have a future ahead of you. You’re going to be able to atone for the things that you did.

Maybe. I just don’t– I don’t feel this guilt going away anytime soon.

No, not completely. But you will learn how to live with it.

I don’t know what I would have done if you didn’t just come in right now. Everyone’s out, including the staff, because I told my mom that I could be fine on my own with Victoria, and clearly, I am not.

But you are fine, Sarah. Now, you listen to me. A tired and cranky toddler will cry and shriek and whatever else. It’s what they do. Victoria will probably throw that toy out just as many times as you’re willing to go and fetch it and give it back to her. She’s at that testing age.

I’m failing the test.

Oh, darling, you’re not failing anything. Oh, my god. If I had even a fraction of your courage, of your pluck– how you’ve carried yourself through this painful ordeal is– mostly, it’s just remarkable. Truly. I am so sorry.

What are you sorry for?

Brady and I, what a tragic mistake that was.

You couldn’t have known that that was going to happen. Fiona, Xander and I are so grateful to you for all the help that you have given during this difficult time. And I thank you for keeping your counsel about me lying to the police.

Of course. Your lie saved Brady and my son, too.

I just– I want you to know that I would have– I would have never done that. I would have never ID’d Brady to the police if I had any doubt that he was the one driving that night. I– I just– I wish that I could remember seeing him behind the wheel. I do. [tense music] I’m sorry, did–

Look, I know that Dr. Rolf is rather eccentric, ethically dubious at times, but the man is a genius. And he already used a related drug on Kayla and Kate and Marlena and Bo. And he kept my brother Stefan alive for years without a heart. So, for God’s sake, Xander–

Fine. If it is as you say it is, take me to the man’s lab. Show me the proof.

Take you to the– so what, you can get your thugs and bust in, appropriate the drug without giving yours truly what I deserve? I don’t think so, Xander. But here’s what I will do for you. I will provide you with clinical data. Sarah can look it over and make her own decision, but you have to make sure that the charges against Brady go poof and disappear.

How the hell am I supposed to do that?

How do you think, Xander? Brady was free and clear until your wife made her bogus statement that he was the one behind the wheel.

She’s going to have to recant. You do understand.

Look, it’s probably worth mentioning that Sarah has been taking a cocktail of pain medications and muscle relaxants, et cetera, so her thinking has, no doubt, become a little bit muddled.

Right. And look, Chanel, I know that–that you’ve been a little upset with me for my jealousy issues. And I also know that I can’t let my own irrational feelings get in the way of me doing my job. Hey, it’s just that when I see you guys together like I did at the photo shoot, it– it brings back these images to me of you and him actually together. Like, for real.

Okay, Johnny, I keep telling you this, but this time, could you please just try and believe me, okay?

Because… Abe and Kate were worried that if you knew about being fired, you would leave the set without finishing your scenes, and then we’d all be screwed and out of work.

Okay. [chuckles] Okay, maybe I went a little overboard saying you saved my life because it was actually Kassandra’s life you saved. It’s just that I feel like she’s such a part of me now, you know? And when I heard that Kassandra was buying the farm, well, Bonnie Kiriakis– she was putting down the down payment. And I know it sounds a little wackadoodle, but I swear to God, it’s the truth. It’s like Kassandra and me– we were definitely separated at birth, you know?

Yeah, right.

I read the script, and I saw that I was gonna be a goner– especially the way too. It was so creepy. It was flesh-eating disease. Ugh! But now none of that matters because my hunky son brought me that miracle cure. Thank God. [chuckles] And now Hattie’s gonna get the ax instead. Speaking of which, um– [clears throat] Now that Charlemagne is dead, I mean, um, like, all her stuff’s gonna be up for grabs, right? [light jazzy music]

Her stuff?

Well, yeah, like her clothes. Oh, and, um, her mansion. Oh, you know what? I know. Kassandra could buy Charlemagne’s mansion from her grief-stricken husband. Oh, no, better yet, I could get the grief-stricken husband. Yeah, see, he could be all sad and lonely. And then Kassandra could come along and make him realize that she was his type more so than Charlemagne ever was, or something like that. And then she would make him forget about his nasty, dead wife. And they would live happily ever after, right? It’s good, right? I know it’s good. I should pitch this to Leo, right? Right? Am I right? I’m right, right? Oh, come on, right?

Better yet, forget about Charlemagne’s sloppy seconds. I could marry Thrust. And then I would be heir to the Manning fortune, and I could run Manning Enterprises!

Okay. Just hold on, madam CEO, because you are not going to be controlling anything anytime soon. You are not going to be marrying Thrust. You are not going to be getting Charlemagne’s mansion or her gowns, which you would just turn into matching outfits for you and your Schnauzer.

But Muffy is a Shi Tzu.

Muffy is Kassandra’s off-camera dog. No one’s ever seen Muffy. No one cares what breed she is. So you, my dear, need to listen up. “Body & Soul” is an ensemble production. When Hattie didn’t respect that, we had no choice but to buy her a one-way ticket to soap opera heaven.

Well, don’t you think Charlemagne actually went to someplace a little hotter?

Either way, I’m sure she would love to have Kassandra join her there. [tense jazzy music]

Got it. [chuckles] No, really, I’m just a– I got–I mean, uh, “Body & Soul” is not a one-star vehicle. And I just, ah, went a little overboard. I’m really sorry. I’m sorry.

[clears throat]

Just remember, now and into the future, that “Body & Soul” has no stars. We all–we all work together in harmony.

Yeah, the producers were apparently impressed with my performance yesterday. I mean, who knew I was a gifted thespian, right?

Well, I won’t give up my day job just yet, but since we’re talking about my budding acting career, Kayla, if you have any influence with the BS producers, maybe you can let them know I wouldn’t be adverse to a romantic interest, maybe a love scene or two. Yeah.

So you’re shooting your love scene with Chanel today?

Mm-hmm.

I thought you were talking to Kate about putting it off.

Yeah. And we did talk to her, but apparently there’s been too many actors asking for so many script changes that now Kate is afraid to ask Leo to do any more rewrites. So unfortunately, the scene cannot be postponed. And it’s a go.

Hmm. You must be disappointed.

I am disappointed. I mean, like I said, it’s just happening too soon. Faith and Arrow’s character shouldn’t be sleeping together this fast. It’s like rushing the whole story, you know?

Yeah. No, I get why you think that.

Yeah.

Well, how do you feel playing opposite Chanel in general? I mean, since you two don’t seem to get along, right?

Uh, actually, it’s not that much of an issue anymore. Chanel and I–we just decided to call a truce. And we thought that it would be best if now that we’re working together, we, you know, just try and start fresh.

Well, that’s very mature of you.

I know. Thank you.

Yeah. [laughs]

Thank you. And now that this whole huge love scene is happening today, I’m just praying that we can get through it without any problems.

Well, I’m sure you’ll be fine, since, obviously, you and Chanel have worked things out.

I–I thought you and Alex couldn’t stand each other. Now all of a sudden, you’re friends?

Okay, what’s so shocking about that? I mean, we obviously have to work together, so we decided that it would make things a little less awkward if we just got along.

Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah, there’s gonna be enough drama on screen.

You know what? Speaking of which, we should probably get a move on. I don’t want to be late for rehearsals.

Hospital scenes? I thought–I thought all the hospital scenes were between, uh, Alex– I mean, uh, Arrow and his mom.

Yeah, it starts with the mom in the bed. And then Faith and Arrow end up–

Oh, no, right. Yep, yep, got it. How could I forget? Um, well, that’s great. I–I need to get to set anyway because we’re shooting Charlemagne’s death scenes first, which I have a feeling is going to be a little tricky.

[chuckles]

The way I see it, Leo, is that you are an accomplice after the fact of getting my character killed off.

What? How’s that?

How’s that? You know exactly how that is. Look, I’m just feeling kind of tricked and duped, you know, because I thought–you know, when I read the script, I thought that Bonnie was the one being killed off.

That’s because I thought it would be more of a shock to the audience. And we both know that shocking the audience equals a rise in ratings if they thought that Kassandra was not long for the world, only to have Charlemagne give up the ghost instead.

Well, that’s very clever of you and very hurtful, Leo. I mean, you killed me off before I even had a chance to have a week under contract. And, I mean, I was– I was kind of thinking that maybe I would– I would get a Daytime Emmy nomination, at least have a fan club started. You– Do you know how that makes me feel? [sobs]

I’m really sorry, Hattie. I am. I hate that things turned out this way. But, um– look on the bright side.

The bright side? You mean that I don’t have a job, and I’m a loser?

Oh, come on. Don’t talk like that. You are a winner, Hattie. You’re a total babe. You are charming and spirited. And even when you are bloated on pork rinds, you manage to be a whole lot of fun.

Well, right–right now, what I am is– I’m a whole lot of miffed.

I get that. Believe me, I do. But to quote the sagacious Roman Brady, “It is called show business, not show friendship.” So even though we’re not gonna be working together anymore, I really hope we can still hang out.

Let me think. No. No. I don’t want to watch the drag show with you anymore. And I don’t want to eat pork rinds with you anymore. I’m just hating on myself, feeling like a bad friend and a rotten, insubstantial person in general, confirming everything my mother thinks about me, even though she’s all of those things, which is probably why I’m this way since she passed down half of her putrid DNA to me.

Okay, do you think you could just possibly tell me what you’re upset about?

I ran into Hattie. She blames me for killing her off, even though I said it was your and Abe’s idea.

Oh. Well, thanks for that.

And I get the feeling that Hattie has a PhD in grudge holding. And she can be spiteful and vindictive. Well, it’s more than a feeling. Her last words to me were, “You better watch out because I will get you.”

Whoa. [chuckles] Well, I’m sure at some point she’ll calm down.

Well, did you lift anything heavy?

No, I wish. Then I’d feel a little less stupid. I was cutting through the park on my way back to the hospital. And I bent down to tie my shoe. And then I just– I felt this nasty twinge in my back.

I don’t think it’s anything serious. I think you might have pulled a muscle.

Ah. That’s good because I have to get to set. I have a big scene with Alex. [groans]

You know what? I think what you need to do is rest a little bit, okay? Last I checked, you have some time before the scene, okay? [suspenseful jazz music]

Would you stop looking at me like that? For Pete sakes, it’s not like I asked them to kill you off. Not that you weren’t thrilled that they were willing to kill off Kassandra in a miserable death so you could be the star of the show.

You know, these scenes that they’re shooting today were really, really well written, Leo.

[sighs] Yeah. Well, as horrible as Hattie feels about being written off and as rotten as I feel that she now hates me with a vengeance, at least she’s going out with a bang.

Yeah, pretty dramatic exit.

It sure is. And I would love to take credit for the idea, but I can’t. See, I knew that I had to come up with a fitting ending for one of Pineview’s leading ladies, but we’re so pressed for time that I remembered how they got rid of a very memorable character on “L.A. Law.” [intriguing music]

So there was this character in “L.A. Law.” Her name was Rosalind Shays. And she’s just, you know, standing there and talking to Leland, turns to get on the elevator, and splat.

Not really. But I don’t wanna hold up production, so I need to get to the hospital.

Arrow, I just heard the news about your mother. Oh, no. Am I too late? Is Kassandra…dead?

No. My mother is right down the hall right now getting a life-saving serum made from a begonia that I found in the jungles of Iguaza.

What?

Against all odds, I brought back a flower that can cure my mother’s disease and save her life.

Oh, Arrow, how heroic, how brave.

It’s a miracle. I thought I was gonna lose my precious mother, but she’s gonna live, Faith.

Hattie, it’s perfectly safe. It’s only three feet deep. And you have an air mattress to fall on. Two, two. [soft dramatic music]

An elevator shaft. I thought I remembered that.

Yeah, I’m not the first person to pay homage to that scene. In the ‘s, there was a sitcom. I can’t remember the name of it. Anyway, there was an actor on that show, and he didn’t want to get on the elevator because he knew he was being killed off, just like Hattie.

But come on, Hattie, you can do this, okay? You’re a professional actor.

Yes. Yes, I am. I–I am a professional actor.

Okay, then. So let’s just, uh–we’ll take it back from the handshake and maybe try it this time a little less gripping, okay?

Great. Everyone could see how insane that woman was except me. So…what are you doing here?

OK. Is this because of what happened upstairs?

Yeah, that psycho Connie. I feel really bad, what you went through.

Hey. Look, the pub is a public space, obviously, and anyone can go upstairs. There’s nothing you could have done.

Mm.

And, Roman, I know that I am still behind on my rent. And since I walked away from the job that you so graciously offered me, I’m not sure when I’m gonna be able to pay you back.

Well, I thought you just turned me down ’cause you got a better job.

Oh, well, that was then, and this is now. I mean, you’re aware of how fast things change in this town.

I’m not in a rush to divorce you, Gabi. I’m just thinking, what’s the point of dragging this on, of perpetuating this… pathetic game of cheating one-upmanship? [dramatic music] I’m miserable. You’re miserable. So…why not cut our losses and end things?

Fair enough. Still seems kind of sudden. Why now? Why today?

Well, because… any normal run-in with my brother will leave me running for the bar cart. And he and I got into it earlier today. And he said something that really resonated with me, even though he was probably just trying to goad me at the time.

That– that I’m never gonna be able to erase the image of you and him together. And he’s right.

Well, I can relate, because ever since I found out about you and Ava, those mental images, I can’t get them out of my head either.

Chad, we discussed this. We determined it is too soon for the kids to meet me. We were on the same page. What happened? What changed?

What’s changed is, it’s too important to keep putting off. The kids, they need you. They miss you. And they’ve gone long enough without you. Look, we’ve kept this under wraps long enough. And the longer we do it, the more–the more likely it is that they’re gonna find out from some rando, OK, and that would be a disaster. I think you’d agree.

I agree. Of course I do. And they’ve been through so much, but, Chad–

Look, look, I’ve kept this out of the paper. But you’re living at the mansion, all right? And there’s a ton of people that come in and out, including my niece Rachel. And if she blabs about something at school, then it’s over.

I understand that. But the mansion is huge. I have steered clear of Rachel, OK? She barely even knows I’m there.

OK, first of all, she knows a lot more than you think. We need to control what Thomas and Charlotte hear and how, OK? Which is why it’s important that we tell them and they don’t find out from someone else.

I’ve got a loose tooth, see? And I was wondering if I could get an advancement on my bucks.

I want to protect Thomas and Charlotte too. So of course I don’t want them finding out about me from some stranger. Of course not. But if I’m starting to remember, what is the harm in giving it a little more time?

I mean, every day that goes by that we don’t tell them is another day that they have to go on missing you in their lives. Our kids are smart, all right? They’re more capable of understanding than you think. OK, you know what? Forget about–forget about our children for a minute and what’s best for them and what they need. What do you need? [dramatic music] What do you want? I mean, what do you want, Abby? Like, I mean, aren’t you tired of being a virtual prisoner in my father’s mausoleum, avoiding us? And don’t you want your life back?

OK, when you remembered our vows, right, I naively expected the floodgates to just open.

And they didn’t.

They didn’t just open magically, Chad. And you were terribly disappointed.

Yeah, sure. But I was also a little bit encouraged because what brought that memory back was something very specific. It was when I showed you our wedding album. So maybe, just maybe, seeing our children will bring your memories back of them. I mean, have you even thought of that?

We both know that this claim is a lie. So tell me, exactly how did you coerce your brother into signing it? [dramatic music]

Yeah, thank God he did. But, you know, we haven’t had a chance to discuss what happened because he found out that Gabi had been hurt and he ran off to check on her. And I don’t know, for all I know, they could be back together again.

Listen, Ava, if you want the job here, it’s yours. But before you decide, maybe you should figure out where things are with Stefan first.

It’ll be fine. It’s a big house. I’m sure we’ll respect each other’s boundaries. And Rafe was just being protective.

I assume they’re from Stefan? Nothing says “I’m groveling here” than a bouquet fresh from the grocery store, huh? [chuckles]

Those aren’t from Stefan. And he and I are way past the groveling stage. In fact, he was just here to tell me that he’s filing for divorce because of you.

Did Stefan say he’s filing for divorce because of me, or is that just your assumption?

It’s not just my assumption. He basically said you taunted him, told him that he would never be able to get the image of the two of us out of his head.

Mm. Yes. Yes, I did tell him that because I know my brother and he tends to obsess, a little OCD, if you will. So I was only stating what I know to be true. [dramatic music]

And what I know to be true is what your son, Johnny, once told you, as I recall.

And what is that?

Well, in essence, it was about misplaced anger. He apparently said that since your marriage to Nicole was ruined, instead of directing that anger toward her or Eric, you took it out on your brother and me, tried to ruin our marriage.

You and Gabi are getting a divorce?

Yeah. It was my idea. I filed. We talked, and… well, Gabi and I are on the same page.

Of course, the idiot covered pretty well. I’ll give him that. But how long before somebody else says something like that? Somebody else will.

And we both know that. And Abby was actually just telling me about an idea that would address that eventuality.

Gabi, I’m sorry… if you blame me for the end of your marriage. [dramatic music] But when you and I shared that night of passion, I was under the distinct impression that it was already over.

[sighs]

I don’t mean to blame you. You’re right. I only lashed out at you because it was easier than blaming myself. But I am to blame. I know that.

Hmm. Yeah, I never really heard that. But…sounds about right.

Yeah. Well, I hope you will consider coming back to work at the Bistro without having any concern over Gabi or my future behavior, which will be impeccable, by the way.

I’m not worried about your behavior, Stefan. But I really do need this job, so I thank you.

And I want you to know, I would gladly, gladly trade an apron at the Brady Pub if it meant that things could be different for you with Gabi.

And as they fall into each other’s arms, it is clear they are going to make mad, passionate– Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t realize I was talking out loud.

No problem. You know what, Leo? Your talking out loud is very entertaining, most of the time.

[laughs] Well, let’s hope the audience finds it entertaining.

I’m sure they will. How’d the shoot at the hospital go?

The nutshell version? Hattie, in her diva grandiosity, gave the producers an ultimatum about not wanting to work with Bonnie. And since Abe and Kate weren’t having any of that, I had to write Hattie’s crash landing. So Ms. Adams is now in the soap opera graveyard, I’m afraid.

Oh, no.

Yeah, and I feel really terrible because I knew about it before she did, obviously, but was instructed that I couldn’t say a word until after she had shot her last scenes with Bonnie because Abe and Kate were concerned that if she knew about it beforehand, she might have a hissy fit and storm off the set.

Yeah, well, knowing Hattie, I’m pretty sure she would.

Yeah, probably. But still, I consider Hattie a friend. I hate that she was blindsided like this.

Yeah, well, that’s why they call it show business and not show friendship, right?

Yeah. I know. Still, I just– I feel like such a heel. You know when you try to justify an awful lie for a good reason? But it’s still a lie and doesn’t make you feel any better about it in the end.

Paris?

Well, Chad said that’s where we went after we got married and that it was one of the most romantic, special times of our life, so…

I’m aware.

And since it was the wedding album that initially triggered the memories, she thought that maybe if we went back there, it would–it would– you know, just being there would trigger something else. And she’s been under so much stress and pressure in Salem.

Oh, yes. Are you planning on taking your children with you to France?

No, no. I was thinking that we should leave them in Boston with Jack and–with my parents. That way, we don’t have to worry about someone else slipping up and saying something to them.

Right. Well, I’m sure Jack and Jennifer would love to look after the children. What if you get to France and you look at the Eiffel Tower and you still don’t remember anything?

If I don’t remember anything, if this doesn’t jog the memories, we’re not gonna keep this charade going on forever. We will come back here and we will absolutely tell the children the truth.

Ah. Telling the truth is sensible. [clears throat]
