And I was on edge, and I wasn’t thinking clearly. And so I jumped to conclusions.

Well, this is a surprise.

That’s not important right now. I talked to Austin, I talked to Lucas, and I talked to Rex. I told them to be vigilant. That goes double for you because, living in Salem, you’re the most vulnerable, obviously.

Look, I’m not afraid of– hang on. If I’m the most vulnerable, why’d you call my brothers first?

Well, it wasn’t because I love them more, if that’s what you’re thinking.

Philip forged it. Along with the help from Vivian Alamain. He has no legitimate claim on Titan.

Back when I was dating Philip, I went to his office, and I overheard him talking about it on the phone…

Yeah. Anyway, I confronted Philip about it, and we got into this huge fight. I was beyond furious– not just that he stole half the company from Xander but that he used me. He put my entire career at risk so that he could pull off his scheme. That’s the real reason why Philip and I broke up.

Steph, if you were that upset, why didn’t you tell anybody?

I did.

Well, you obviously didn’t tell Xander.

No, I told his wife.

[sighs]

So what did Philip say to Alex?

Well, he didn’t have a chance to say much of anything. Yeah, once I confirmed my brother was shagging Stephanie behind his back, Alex tried to throttle Philip. I managed to separate them and keep them apart. But then Alex just stormed off.

And went straight to Stephanie’s, apparently.

Not much. I mean, he said that John’s handler lost track of him right here in Estonia. No matter how hard Steve and I pushed, we still couldn’t get more information out of him. That’s why I’m hoping somebody here, somebody can give us a lead.

Well, obviously, you’ve known John a lot longer than I have. But there’s one thing I know for sure is that even if the odds are virtually impossible, he can beat them. He’s like James Bond, only cooler.

I agree with you there.

Dad is my idol. You know what’s funny about that is that we did not get off to a good start. You know, come to think of it, neither did you and I. When I first got into town and after my rotator cuff surgery, you were my therapist. And–and it just so happened, you were Will’s grandmother. And I know that was a tough spot to be in.

Well, you also were in a pretty tough place. Your baseball career was over, and you were in the process of coming out.

Yeah. Yeah, I was– was kind of a mess.

[laughs] All in the past.

You know what? I just realized that in two weeks, it’ll be 10 years since I found out John Black is my dad.

It’s gonna be exactly two weeks? How did you know that?

Well, I mean, it mattered so much to me. I mean, to say that it changed my life for the better is an understatement. You know, finding out that he was my dad, it’s one of the best things that ever happened to me.

Do you think Stephanie will keep your secret?

She’s not exactly my biggest fan.

She’s gone along with everything so far.

But now Sarah and I are asking her to let Alex think she’s been cheating on him. I doubt she’ll risk her relationship to cover for us.

Philip didn’t deny the affair, so I’m guessing Stephanie will have no choice but to come clean.

[sighs] Yeah. I just hope she tells Alex that she and Philip are done. And with any luck, it’ll all just blow over.

I mean, if it was just the cheating, maybe in time, Alex could forgive her. But lying to his face like that, making a bloody fool out of him by keeping that secret for God knows how long.

I imagine she and Philip realized they had unresolved feelings for each other. I mean, they did split up so abruptly for reasons I’m still not clear on. But, God, I just wish they hadn’t snuck around behind Alex’s back. He didn’t deserve that.

Look, Alex and I haven’t always gotten along, but he did take my side against Philip in court. And, God, he took it like an absolute champ when he found out he wasn’t really Victor’s son. Didn’t fight me. Didn’t blame me. Just graciously stepped aside.

Yeah, he’s a– he’s a really great guy.

And after the way Theresa messed him around, I mean, he was finally happy with Stephanie. And they went through so much to get back together. For her to betray him like that, God, he must be devastated.

Xander, I made a– I made a mistake.

I don’t necessarily disagree, but it isn’t that simple.

Well, it is that simple for me because it happened to me. I bought into a phony letter misrepresenting Victor’s wishes, and it turned my entire world upside down. I’m not letting it happen to my cousin.

And that’s fair. But, Alex, this isn’t just about Titan. If Xander finds out that Sarah’s been lying to him all this time, he will never forgive her. Their marriage will be over.

I’m not getting it. Why did she even lie?

The way Sarah explained it, Kate and Philip argued that even though Victor’s letter was a forgery, it was still somewhat truthful. They believe that Victor wanted Philip to run Titan. But when he wrote his will, Philip was struggling with mental illness, and so Victor couldn’t put him in charge. And Sarah didn’t think it was fair to penalize Philip for that.

So Sarah cares more about what’s fair to Philip than what’s best for her own husband.

She does care about what’s best for Xander, what’s best for everyone.

How is that best for everyone?

Sarah was worried if Xander were alone at the top, all of that power would go to his head. But if Philip were there, he could act as a check, stop him from doing anything crazy or illegal.

Shouldn’t Sarah be able to trust her own husband?

If Xander were alone at the top, would you trust him? [dramatic music] There was also the strong chance that if Xander found out what Philip had done, he would either prosecute him or kill him. And I didn’t want to be responsible for that.

So you’re just pretending that you don’t know anything.

And, Alex, believe me, if this lie had directly affected you or our relationship, just like that nonsense about me sleeping with Philip, I would have shut it down from the beginning. But it doesn’t.

Oh, my God, Doug. I’m so sorry. I thought that when you told her how sorry you were and that you were trying to get the necklace back– I mean, yeah, I thought she’d be upset, but I thought maybe she would also give you another chance, especially since you owned up to it.

Actually, uh, I wasn’t the one to tell her.

I don’t understand.

When I got there, she already knew.

She already knew? What do you mean? Who told her? [knocking]

Hey. I’m–I’m surprised you’re here. I figured with the delayed opening, you’d be sleeping in.

Yeah, I forgot to turn off my alarm. And those lame parent-teacher conferences– I’m literally a senior in high school, and my mom still insists on going to them. But I’ll go easy on her. That is, if today’s the day that she finally gives Johnny and Chanel the go-ahead with the adoption.

And do you think she will?

I mean, I think Chanel’s mom was pretty persuasive. She made the point that they would provide a loving home and that our kid would never want for anything.

There is none, not anymore. She just wants to ask them a few more questions and get a better sense of who they are. But if everything goes according to plan, then Johnny and Chanel will be our baby’s new parents. [gentle music]

And if that isn’t stomach-churning enough, Johnny’s worried that Amy Choi is going to find out about this somehow. And I know that she already knows that his family is pretty messed up. But this is a whole new level of terrible.

Listen to me, Chanel. Whatever happened all those years ago is none of that woman’s business. And what’s it–what is it that they say about the sins of the father? Now, doesn’t she teach Sunday school? She ought to know a thing or two about sins.

I want you to rest easy, because there is no reason for Amy Choi to ever find out about what EJ did to Johnny’s mother.

Your mother is, as you well know, a wonderful woman, strong, kind, fiercely loyal to those she loves. And yes, it may have taken a while. But because I was genuinely contrite and also because she knew that I loved her with all my heart and had enormous respect for her as a mother, as–as–as a force of nature, that I eventually got through to her. Mind you, I never tried to excuse what I did. It was inexcusable, obviously. But I did try to make her understand that sometimes I behaved in ways that I felt I had no control over. I admitted to her, as I’m admitting to you now, that partly due to my unorthodox upbringing, partly due to whatever DNA was passed along to me, I was a deeply flawed person who behaved reprehensibly at times, shamefully. But whose heart was sometimes in the right place. Not always, granted, but sometimes. Like right now, feeling so much love for you. And so your mother, at the time, saw the best in me and eventually forgave me. So do you think, perhaps, you could too, in time?

I got a phone call from Tate Black.

I guess he owed some people money. He was in a bad way. Saw an easy way out. And he confided in Holly about it. And when I found out– well, when she told me, I promised her that I wouldn’t tell anyone. And last night, I broke that promise. And I told Julie that Doug was the thief.

Well? Why are you so worried something might screw this up?

Oh, uh, well, there’s– there’s no reason in particular that I’m worried. It’s just, you know, anyone in my position would be, you know, a little nervous. It would mean the world to me and my husband if you would give us your blessing to adopt Sophia and Tate’s baby.

I don’t even know what I was thinking. I’ll admit, I– I was upset about how much time Doug and Holly seem to be spending together. And I was also upset to find out that Melinda Trask knew that Holly was covering for Doug. Like, imagine how I felt thinking Holly could go down as an accomplice because that jerk had to go and steal jewelry from Julie Williams, of all people, his grandfather’s widow. I mean, I was freaked out.

I’m sure you were.

So yeah, OK, without even thinking about it, I was dialing Mrs. Williams’ number. And I thought I would just, like, drop a couple hints, sort of like, guide her to the truth. And before I knew it, the words were just pouring out of me. I rationalized it by telling myself that I was doing this for Holly, like, protecting her. And I know that’s not the whole reason I did it.

You wanted to punish Doug.

Yeah. Yeah. I wanted to punish Doug. But I ended up punishing myself because sooner or later, Holly is going to find out that I’m the one that told Julie. And when she does, she’s never going to forgive me.

But he has been implicated in a host of crimes both past and present, for which he has been adept at avoiding prosecution. But recently, he faced near-certain consequences following an immunity deal that was struck with fellow kidnapping suspect Rachel Blake. But given that Ms. Blake has since disappeared, Mr. DiMera seems likely to have escaped the long arm of the law yet again. Disappeared?

Look, it should be said that all those charges are alleged, not proven.

But Chad DiMera is the editor of “The Spectator.” And if I’m not mistaken, he’s EJ’s brother. I mean, if he’s willing to put this out there, then how spurious can these allegations be?

Well, I don’t know about that. Julie also said that she’s not gonna rest until she finds out who took the necklace. So even though Melinda didn’t say anything, I’m starting to think maybe I should.

I think maybe I should tell Julie that I’m the one who took the necklace. [tense music] [phone rings]

I am not quite sure how to say this, but I know about what’s happening with your grandmother’s necklace, and… I have some information about who took it.

Mm-hmm. You know, I told her to stay in her room. I mean, I suppose it’s my fault, I mean, thinking that that would be enough. I should have just taken her out of the house then and there.

Yeah, and shipped her off to God knows where. And now we don’t have anyone to testify against him.

Well, I must say, I admire your determination. But like you just said, we both know why that’s not going to happen. If you spill on me, Kristen and Brady’s precious daughter will be taken away from them. And all the blame goes to you.

No, not yet. But I don’t want you to worry, because I was able to put out some feelers to some of my contacts here, and they are gonna put us in touch with some of the locals John was working with before he went missing.

It is. And chances are, we could hear from them as soon as tomorrow.

So listen, why don’t we take the day, rest up, recover from the jet lag, and we will hit the ground running first thing in the morning?

That sounds like exactly what Brady said. It’s just, it’s taking a while now, you now. I came all this way to find my husband, and I will not leave until I find him. [somber music]

OK, well, now that you know the piece was liberated from its former owner, why not just sell it back to Doug and we can put all this behind us? He just wants to return it to its rightful owner.

Well, filing the police report was an important first step. But now we have to prove the necklace Melinda Trask is wearing did belong to Great-Gran and was stolen from the time capsule.

I already proved it. I recognized it immediately.

But as ex-DA Trask was very quick to point out, you only got a brief look at it on the day of Doug’s memorial before it disappeared. And there’s no pictures of it. There’s no insurance. There’s no records of any kind. The last time anybody saw it before you opened the time capsule was 60 years ago.

What about all the people that were standing around when we opened the time capsule? Ciara, Lucas, Shawn, your mother, my brother, Steve. All of them can corroborate, yes, this was Alice Horton’s necklace.

OK, that’s a start. If they’re able to do that, it could definitely help our case.

Great. [gasps] I can text them. I can text them that picture I took of Trask wearing the diamond necklace. Great. Then we can nail that obnoxious thief.

I’m sure Doug will give you what you paid for it. Right, Doug?

Yeah, well, we’ve already been down that road. He promised me every cent that I paid for it in installments that would stretch into the next century. So I will give you the same answer that I gave him and his little friend Holly: no. I will not sell the necklace back to him. [dramatic music]

I’m an investigative reporter now, thank you very much, who might just decide to write an exposé on a former DA who is knowingly in possession of stolen merchandise that she refused to return.

The merchandise that this “investigative reporter” helped fence? Is that the merchandise that you were referring to, Leo? That’s what I thought. And given that you’re also implicated in this transaction, I think that you should think twice about writing that article. Wouldn’t be a very wise move, now, would it? [tense music]

Look, I have heard all about Leo’s past, mostly from him. I have heard all about your concerns. But I will try and reassure you again that my eyes are wide open, and so are Leo’s. Hey, I’m not perfect either, you know? And no matter what, I just– I can’t help how I feel.
