Oh, I got back a little while ago. I just–I went straight up to see the kids. I wanted to spend some time with them, kiss them good night.

Which is surprising because Jennifer knew about the DNA test results and never gave any indication that she was in any way skeptical. And I don’t blame Jennifer. I mean, you know, when you– when you–when you see her, when you see Abigail with a new face and so different and she doesn’t have any memory of us at all, I mean, it’s– it’s–it’s confusing and it’s–and it’s– and it’s jarring.

Of course it is, darling.

It’s just– you know, it’s just gonna take time for all of us to process… this woman being Abigail. But it’s undeniable now, right? The DNA test proves it. It’s her.

Proved it, thank God– proved it, so no more uncertainty for us, uncertainty for you, ’cause you were having a terrible time with that. I mean, you had a terrible time.

Yeah, well… I mean, even with the– with the certainty of the test results, it’s gonna take Jennifer some time.

[dramatic music] I don’t know how much, but it’s gonna take her some time to get used to this new version of Abby. So we just thought it was best for she and Jack to go back to Boston.

Well… I share your concern for Abigail, Jennifer, Jack, the whole family. But my main concern is you, ’cause you lost your wife in such a… violent way. And then all this time has gone by, and she reappears. And you tell me she doesn’t look the same and has no memory of any of it, of any of us. What are you gonna do? How are you gonna tell Thomas and Charlotte, your mother’s returned, but you won’t recognize her? And worse… Abigail may never get her memory back.

Well, yeah, when you put it like that, it makes you want to crawl in a hole.

No, no, no, no, no. It’s a lot. But you, Chad, have always been able to… throw all these plates in the air, you know, like Cirque du Soleil.

[both chuckle]

[clapping] Seriously, how are you keeping it together?

[dramatic music]

I have to be strong for my kids… and for Abby. If she sees me uncertain or falling apart, then that’s just gonna make things more difficult. And that’s the last thing I want, so… keep it together.

Well, it’s slightly more complicated than that. Stefan took advantage of a rather unique situation, which is no surprise, since my brother tends to make very, very bad decisions and he’s an idiot. Suffice it to say that everything that happened between you and Stefan was entirely his fault, so…

I take it you and Stefan don’t exactly get along.

Let’s just say that he and his wife are not my favorite people and the feeling is entirely mutual.

Yeah, so did I. But really, it was more Gabi’s doing. She threatened to pull Gabi Chic from DiMera if Kristen didn’t get rid of me.

Why did Gabi do that? I mean, what, I mean, she just– just didn’t want to work with you or what?

That’s a bit of an understatement.

OK, I see. Does this have something to do with your history with her brother?

Nope. It’s because of my history with her husband. – I think she’s got a pulse, Li.

[suspenseful music] Yeah, she’s breathing too. That makes no sense. I gave her the same dose that I gave Bobby Stein. Or was it Everett Lynch? I think it was Bobby Stein. Whatever. He’s dead, whoever he was. So why didn’t it kill Melinda too?

No. You need to borrow some Horton optimism. Abigail will get her memory back. May take a long time, but she will. And when she does, boy, she’s gonna fall in love with you all over again. I’m sure of it.

So because Stefan and his wife– what is her name, Gabi?

Because they kicked you out of your company, you let Gabi go to prison for a crime she didn’t commit?

To be fair, I didn’t know that she was innocent, not at the time. In fact, all the evidence suggested that she was guilty.

Wow, seems to me like you’re the idiot brother.

Yeah, I suppose I deserve that. But, you know, you didn’t always have such a low opinion of me.

Finally, it just seemed like the only choice was…to lie.

So we told Harris that we were dating.

And then you got a little carried away with the deception.

Hmm. Yeah, I guess that’s one way to put it.

Look, I was lonely. I was missing Harris, and Stefan was missing Gabi, and…

The night it happened, I guess the lie we had been telling just became a little too close to the truth.

Oh, but, Roman, Roman, as soon as it was over, we both regretted it, both of us. And we realized it was a huge mistake. And we vowed that we would never do it again. And we agreed. We agreed it would just stay between us. No one else needed to know. In fact, we swore we would take it to our graves.

OK, look, I realize that we may never totally get past this. Yes, I know this is not something that you are going to forget. But all I meant when I said I wanted to talk was that hopefully I can get you to understand that I never stopped loving you, that I never stopped missing you every moment of every day that we were apart.

Her assistant told her– Connie Vininski. She’s a real whack job who worships the ground that Gabi walks on.

OK, well, how did this Connie person hear about it?

[light music]

Well… look, she was eavesdropping on me when I was talking to Kristen about it, OK? And it was a definite blunder on my part. I am aware of that. But it’s not like I expected Gabi’s faithful little lapdog to hear me and then rat me out. You know, like she’s one to judge. The woman’s a total fraud.

How so?

Well, Melinda Trask found out that she lied and invented her entire résumé.

If she could just have found out a few days earlier before this whole debacle.

Well, you know what they say: timing is everything.

Ain’t that the truth?

But maybe the last laugh will be on Connie, because Melinda just went to her apartment to fire her ass.

I told you what happened with Bobby wasn’t my fault.

Of course it wasn’t. But this will be. Bobby may be dead, but Rafe is still alive. Not all of your actions are irreversible is what I’m saying. Rafe could still come out of his coma and go on to lead a happy life, and so can Melinda.

Yeah, but she’s gonna expose me. And so I embellished a few tiny details on my résumé. So what? She’s going to make me sound like some kind of low-life criminal. What am I supposed to do then?

Yeah, of course. Why not? I mean, look at you. You’re–you’re beautiful. You’re talented. And were you not just saying that you’re looking for a new creative outlet now that the bakery is practically running itself?

Mm-hmm. And you said that you’d been looking forward to spending more time together. Well, this checks off both of those boxes. So what do you say? Will you audition?

Because we all have to– we have to figure out the logistics of, you know, whatever our– our new life looks like, make sure that everybody gets done everything that’s supposed to be done while I recover.

Yeah. Well, it, um– it’ll take a village. But you have a very big village of people who love you.

[soft dramatic music]

 

[choking up] I’m very grateful for you, Mama.

And I, um– and I know that, um, I was– I was nervous about her coming to town, but, honestly, having Fiona here is kind of a blessing right now, isn’t it?

Well, maybe another walk will help you settle, huh? When your father was a little one, I used to drive him around in the car– for hours sometimes. It was the only thing that would calm him down. But I don’t suppose that would be a very good idea right now, do you?

[baby fussing] Ah, Victoria. You’re looking at me so intently, and yet I know you don’t understand anything I’m saying to you, which is why I can open up to you, because I know you’ll keep my secret.

And that was the last footage that we were able to obtain. None of the cameras captured Sarah getting hit by that car. And we don’t have one single eyewitness. And Sarah still has no memory of the accident. So as of now, we have no other avenues to pursue.

Not much of an update.

Yeah, unfortunately not. And unless the driver takes the car in for repairs, or we get struck by lightning and the perpetrator finds a conscience and walks through those doors with their hands up, I am not very optimistic that we’re gonna find whoever did this.

Well, I’m not a real actor, for one thing. And what if I don’t get the part? That will be awkward for both of us. Or even worse, what if I do get the part and then I make a fool of myself in front of thousands?

A million people watch your soap opera?

About that, yeah.

Every day. And, look, Chanel, you are not going to make a fool of yourself, okay? You did amazing when you auditioned for Celeste. And you were so excited to be in a movie. What changed?

Well, what changed is that I am your wife now.

And when I said that I wanted to spend more time together, I meant, like, picnics in the park or walks around the lake. Johnny, I have worked with Allie, and I worked with Talia, and, believe me, those weren’t no picnics.

Okay, look, since you are being so stubborn, I am going to have to switch up my tactics and try to convince you in another way.

[grumbles indistinctly] You let me worry about that, all right? You just show up for the audition.

[monitors beeping]

Sarah, darling, I am so proud of your courage. All the nurses I’ve talked to, they so admire you as a doctor. They’ve been telling me what a terrific patient you are and how they admire your attitude.

[sniffles] You know, I’ve seen a lot of, um, patients come in here with injuries like mine, including you, and I just– I know that the only way you get better is through hard work, so…

Right. And you’re gonna do that with strength and commitment.

Yeah, for sure. You see, my plan is to stand on my own two feet and walk out of here in a week– or a month or a year or however long it takes.

And if that’s not the plan for me, then, um– Then I, um– then I plan on living a full and complete life.

I’m a very lucky woman to have– have such a supportive mom. And I have a husband that I love with all of my heart and my daughter, who’s a miracle. So I refuse to let some hit-and-run driver rob me of a wonderful future with my family. – I just feel so bad for Sarah and her family, especially since she just got married, and she has a little girl who needs her. And, my God, to be run over by some SOB who just leaves her lying there on the side of the road.

[phone rings]

Oh, yes, the secret. Well, I was just telling our little darling about a plan I had for Sarah. I was thinking of maybe taking a picture of Victoria and putting it in a frame or maybe a locket.

The doctors are optimistic. They say, um, it’s probably just caused by swelling. So we’re hopeful that paralysis will abate when the swelling goes down.

It’s just, uh, we have no way of knowing how long Sarah’s gonna be hospitalized for. And she’s already missing Victoria terribly, so…

Yeah, well, I’m sure Victoria is missing her too, even though she can’t express it. Oh, and you should know, she hasn’t had her nap this afternoon. She’s been resisting it like mad. Actually, I was just about to take her out for another walk, see if I could help her settle.

Don’t worry about that. I’m gonna take her to the hospital to see Sarah. I think it’ll do the world of good to see her little girl.

[tense music] The ca–the– the car was parked face-in, so I never saw the front of it until now. There was– there’s damage on the fender.

It’s a–it’s a scratch.

Which you only just noticed this morning? Brady, who’s to know how long it’s been there? It might just be a coincidence. And you don’t know what caused it. Anything could have caused it, and there’s no way to know for sure. And besides, Sarah didn’t even see the driver, and apparently, she can’t remember anything either.

Well, good news is, Kayla says I can bring her every day as long as you’re here– just can’t let on to the other patients that we get special privileges.

I’m afraid not.

[soft dramatic music] Um, while your initial MRI and CT showed no fracture and no displacement, the radiologist believes that the repeat MRI shows evidence of spinal cord ischemia.

 

[sighs]

What does that mean?

It’s a form of a stroke, but it’s in the spinal cord and not the brain. And it’s most likely caused by the blood loss that Sarah experienced after the accident.

But now, I mean, we have a definitive diagnosis. Isn’t that good? What can we do? What’s next?

Well, in Sarah’s case, surgery isn’t indicated. And steroids are a proven beneficial treatment for this condition. And Sarah’s on those already.

Yeah. In other words, there’s nothing left to do. I’m just gonna, um– I’m gonna tell you– tell you it straight, okay? There’s been damage to the nerves, and, um, it’s probably irreversible. And there’s a possibility that I– there’s a possibility that I will eventually regain some sensation, but there’s a good chance I won’t.

Annette Bening. Wouldn’t she make a great guest star? I mean, just a short, like five-episode story arc? OK, listen to this, OK? Judith Callahan, the interior fashion designer, she comes storming into town, mascara streaming down her face, demands to talk to her long-lost husband, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.

 

[laughs] Annette Bening, huh? I’ll keep that in mind. Hey, have you had a chance to look at Leo’s sample script?

Yeah, I did. I read it last night.

What’d you think?

Well, it was certainly melodramatic, filled with hyperbolic dialogue.

That’s too bad. I thought it was pretty terrific.

Oh, no, no, no. You’re misunderstanding me. That was a compliment. I mean, I think melodrama is exactly what the show needs. You know, our audience, they want to be transported to a place where the stakes are high, the emotions grand, and there’s a chance for love around every corner.

[dramatic music]

I did. I mean, there’s so much intriguing material there. I really like the idea of giving Charlemagne double lives. I mean, I think that’s gonna play right into Hattie’s wheelhouse.

Well, Hattie, I’m actually glad I ran into you, because from what I understand, you and I are gonna be working together.

Yeah, on “Body & Soul.”

Oh. Oh, what part do you play?

[gasps] Are you my love interest?

No, I’m the director.

Right, well, with all due respect, Hattie, it is my personal philosophy that actors and directors are not in the business of revising scripts. Only a writer should do that.

You know what? I have to admit that I am a little bit envious. I mean, I wouldn’t mind having a job that was a little bit more unpredictable and exciting.

No, no, not at all. It’s just that, you know, I hired all those new staff and, you know, including Felicity Greene, who bikes over after school. And, well, the bakery’s pretty much running itself now.

So what you’re saying is, you just have all this free time on your hands now.

Yeah. Yeah, that is what I’m saying. And, you know, I kind of thought that I would be spending that free time with you, Gio. But now you’re gonna be so busy with “Body & Soul,” and, well–

You know, there was another story I really liked too.

The star-crossed lovers, Arrow and Faith. I mean, I really think that Leo handled their dilemma with quite a bit of nuance.

I agree. I agree. But, you know, I am worried about all the new faces.

Yeah. Yeah, it is. I mean, with this kind of memory loss, it could just be a psychological issue, you know, the brain trying to protect itself from a trauma that it’s experienced. And if that’s the case, and it’s not a physical issue, then there’s a chance she could make a full recovery.

Look, there are patients who make a full recovery and then there are others that– well, I mean, you know there’s really no way to know when or even if Abigail’s going to recover.

Well, then it’s a good thing she has people around her who love her, who are willing to support her and get her through this no matter how long it takes, including her Uncle Steve and her amazing Aunt Kayla.

You know, from what Jack told me, Abigail spent the last few years being lied to and indoctrinated by Clyde Weston. But now that she’s home here in Salem around all the people and things she knows, maybe it’ll cut through all that.

Her resume said that she was lead merchandiser for Saxton’s. Well, I have a friend in the merchandising department. I called him and asked if he knew her.

[scoffs] Lead merchandiser? She did clerical work and lasted all of two weeks.

But she was memorable enough that he knew exactly who I was talking about.

All right. Well, look, she is not the first person to inflate a resume.

“Overzealous” and “psychotic” were the two words that came up the most.

I’m sure worse has been said about me.

For the record, I wouldn’t have hired you either. [chuckles] But let’s stay the course. Apparently Connie knew exactly how to work the Saxton system. Once HR got involved, she threatened lawsuits left and right until they finally agreed to give her a favorable reference just so that she’d go away.

All right. OK, so what do we do? Well, we tell Gabi, we give Connie a warning, what?

Well, I wouldn’t say that. Look, based on the skid marks and the preliminary reconstruction from the accident, you can see that the car clipped that pole over there, yeah, when it was fleeing the scene. And there’s some gray paint on there, and I’m gonna have the forensics examine it.

So you’re saying that you think that the car that hit Sarah was gray?

And will almost have discernible damage to the front end from the impact.

Well, I can donate whatever she needs.

Is there anything else, Kayla?

Well, it’s an absolute miracle that she didn’t have any broken bones. She does have quite a bit of soft tissue bruising and inflammation that we are still gonna need to evaluate.

Well, assuming that there’s no complications, I think that she will absolutely fully recover. I know that she will be highly motivated to get well.

Well, I know she’s motivated, but, you know, we’re gonna have to keep an eye on her and make sure that she doesn’t push too hard.

Well, you know what they say about doctors– worst patients. But listen, she is going to get VIP treatment here. We all love her so much. She is our family. And we’re so sorry that this happened to her.

Right, well, we were gonna take the ferry to Smith Island, and we were gonna honeymoon at the Horton cabin, but Maggie couldn’t find the key, so Sarah offered to go help look. But when Sarah didn’t return, I called Maggie and found out that Sarah never even made it to the mansion.

And that’s when you went to look for her?

Yeah. Found her on the ground. She never even made it to our car.

OK, and you told the officer that was on the scene that you heard a car screeching away? Presumably the car that hit Sarah?

Oh, I’m sure it was. I could smell the rubber from the tires burning, they were going so fast.

Did you see the car?

No, it was dark, and I was worried about Sarah, you know?

Right. This is what strikes me as odd. If Sarah never made it to the car, then she must have been hit shortly after she left you.

And how long after she left you in the square did you go looking for her?

Well, I could check my phone and see what time I called Maggie, but it was at least minutes. When I got there, the driver was still there. Why would they stay?

Maybe to check on her to make sure that help came.

And then they fled? That makes no sense.

And she’s wolfing down pork rinds, talking about how bloated she is, and she’s thinking about giving up her practice to become a soap opera star. So I am, like, shook. But I don’t want to offend her by telling her how weird she’s acting and how much she’s freaking me out. Anyway, that’s the latest here, if you have any advice for me. Yes, I know. I’m never gonna hear from you again, but… like I said, it helps me to talk to you. I love you, Guinevere. And I miss you something terrible.

Although God knows, plenty of people get married when they’re not happy together, thinking that just because they have mad sexual chemistry, that means they should spend the rest of their lives together, when you and I both know that having the hots for one another isn’t enough to make a relationship last.

Right, and for the record, Sarah and I are compatible in all kinds of ways in addition to having mad sexual chemistry, so…

Well, you do make a beautiful couple. Although Sarah could afford to have a little more meat on her bones. Does she ever eat?

She eats plenty, Leo. And I love her just the way she is.

Oh, well, hey, hey, I do not mean to imply that she’s not a knockout. She is, especially for a doctor. I mean, not that doctors can’t be good-looking. But, you know, when you’re as gorgeous as Sarah is, you kind of wonder why she didn’t go the movie star route. She could have been the next Penélope Cruz– without the accent, without Javier Bardem, on whom I have a major crush. But I do love that little tattoo on her neck– Sarah’s, not Penélope’s.

I’ll be sure to let her know you approve.

But it’s great that she’s a doctor. Of course it is. You must be very proud. Although I have read that it’s not nearly as lucrative to be a doctor these days as it once was. But it’s not like you guys were gonna ever have to eat dog food.

Ugh, fine. You know, you are quite edgy for a man who just got hitched.

Just a bit stressed and concerned that Sarah and I are gonna miss this last ferry, that’s all.
