Uh, well, that’s because I took Julie to Chicago. An impromptu shopping spree. I was trying to lift her spirits. And this is her first Valentine’s Day without Doug.
That’s really nice of you.
Yeah, it was special for both of us. Speaking of which, I haven’t had a chance to ask you how was your Valentine’s Day with Tate? Was it everything you hoped for? [soft dramatic music] [soft upbeat music]
Sophia, hey. Hi. I was worried about you when you weren’t in school yesterday. Is everything OK?
Oh, yeah. I’m fine. Um, my mom forced me to stay home after all those cramps. And I’m glad that she did, actually, because I slept for, like, 24 hours. 3
That’s great. So you’re feeling better today?
Much. Um, my morning sickness is gone. So now I kind of just want to eat everything in sight. [chuckles] My mood’s been a lot better too. You know, now that my mom is finally saying she won’t stand in the way of an adoption. As long as she approves of the couple, of course. But still, I just– I feel like a huge weight has been lifted.
Well, then I have some great news for you.
You do? What is it?
I found a couple that wants to adopt our baby. [tender music] [siren wailing]] [knock on door]
Hey, Grandma. Is this a bad time?
Oh, hi, honey. Not at all. I’m always happy to see you. Come in.

Oh, mm, mm. You made my day. [Johnny chuckles] Looks like you’re about to make somebody else’s day, too. Are you here to visit a patient?
Uh, yes, yes. These are for Chanel. [sparse somber music]

Oh. Oh, I’m sorry if I woke you, sweetheart.
No, no, it’s fine. I wasn’t really asleep. But how did you know I was here?
I found out from the new girl behind the counter at Sweet Bits. Chanel, why wasn’t I told you were in the hospital?
I didn’t want to worry you.
Oh, baby, well, what’s going on? Are you all right?
Yeah, yeah. I’m fine. It was just a minor outpatient procedure. I had some, uh, tissue removed from my uterus.
From your– did you have another miscarriage?
No, no, no, no. There wasn’t a pregnancy. It was just some cells that were growing where they weren’t supposed to be.
Cells growing from where they’re not supposed–
C-Chanel, are you–you saying you have cancer? [soft orchestration] announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “Days of Our Lives.”
I am so glad the procedure went well.
It did. Yes, it went, um– yeah, it went very well. Kayla said they got all of the tumors, so it’s likely that Chanel won’t have to do any follow-up treatment. 9

Please tell her that if she ever wants to talk about it, my door is always open to her.
Well, she might take you up on that. We actually haven’t told anyone about this, not even her mom. Because we know that, unlike you, Paulina would freak out if she heard the word “cancer.”

And, um… I guess, uh, Paulina doesn’t know that she’s in the hospital?
She has no idea. [somber music]
No, Mama, I do not have cancer. There were just some cancerous cells that were removed. And Kayla said I’m going to be absolutely fine.
Oh. Oh, good God. Although nowadays, I do know firsthand that a cancer diagnosis, it isn’t what it used to be. There’s many new treatments and cures out there.
Right, and you are a great example of surviving cancer.
Still very grateful every single day.

Oh.
And I’m sorry I didn’t tell you anything. I just–I didn’t want to upset you. You’ve already been through so much this year. 12

OK, so do you remember the other day when we ran into my cousin Johnny and his wife, Chanel?
Right, yeah, right after that couple from my church backed out of meeting us.
Right. Well, I saw them at the hospital right after we had the little scare with the baby. And we got to talking and it turns out they’ve been having fertility issues.
Oh, my God.

So–and they’re really serious about it? Like, they–they really want to adopt our baby?
Yep, they really do. I know, I know. And, look, obviously there’s, like, a lot to figure out, and your mom still has to approve. But I don’t know. Isn’t that great?
It is, yeah. But, um… you must have known about this for a while and you’re just telling me now?

You texted me? About the future of our– [soft tense music] Oh. Right. It was, uh, Valentine’s Day. [Tate clears throat] So h-how did everything go with Holly?
Uh, good. Yeah. Yeah, it was fine.
And I bet you told her about this couple wanting to adopt our baby… before you told me? Well, did you?
Yeah, she knows.
And I’ll bet she’s just as thrilled as you are, right? Because as long as this works out, our baby won’t be a problem for the two of you anymore. [tense music]
Uh, my Valentine’s Day with Tate– it was great, very romantic. 17
Oh, I’m so glad. Truth be told, I was a little worried.
Worried? Why?

No, Grandma, tell me. Why were you worried?
Uh, OK. Well, because of young Doug. I was concerned he might have, uh, gotten in the way. [Holly scoffs] [somber music]

When I first saw you, that’s when I knew the truth. You are the most beautiful, wonderful thing I’ve ever seen. And that’s all I ever need to know.
Wow. Talk about big feelings. That’s pretty romantic.
Yeah, it is.
And I feel the same way about you.
Doug? Penny for your thoughts? [somber music] [somber music]
Chanel, honey, how did you find out about these abnormal cells? You know, did you have symptoms or– 20
No. No, I didn’t have any symptoms. But, um… well, Johnny and I knew that we had to wait six months after the miscarriage for me to get pregnant again. And so we made an appointment to come see Kayla so that we could, you know, get the go-ahead to start trying.
Well, it obviously didn’t turn out like you’d hoped.
No. No, it didn’t.
Mm. Well, does this mean that you’re going to have to wait even longer?
Yeah. Yeah, and it also means that my chances of having another molar pregnancy are increased.
Oh, honey. Oh.
Mama, I just– I’m not sure I’m ready to go through that heartbreak again.
I understand.
So, uh… Johnny and I have been talking about going another route to starting a family.
By another route, uh, I assume you mean–
You assume right. We have been talking about adoption. [soft dramatic music]
It’s not like Chanel won’t be able to get pregnant in the future, and we’re definitely not ruling that out. But we want to start a family right now. [soft dramatic music] And you don’t think that’s a good idea.
Um, no, I’m just processing it. That’s all.
Mm-hmm.
And I don’t really understand the rush. You and Chanel are both very young, and–and you– you just came through a pretty rough patch in your marriage.
Look, I know that. I know that, OK? And we’ve discussed that. But before this whole mess with Alex and Joy, Chanel and I were talking about having a baby. And that’s what we wanted to do. And it’s not that we think that this would be putting a Band-Aid on our marriage or anything like that. Honestly, we feel stronger than ever after everything we’ve been through. We do.
I’m glad to hear that.

It’s just things are– things are– things are really good between us right now. And honestly, it feels like fate that this situation has just… [clacks tongue] Fallen into our laps.
Oh. What situation?
Uh, well, by sheer coincidence, uh, we found a couple that wants to give their baby up for adoption. And we know them and it just feels like it could be a really good fit.
Wow. Do I know them?
You do. Yes, actually, you know them very well. It’s, um… it’s Sophia Choi and your other grandson, Tate. [soft dramatic music] – Sophia, I really didn’t mean to upset you. And if I overstepped, I’m sorry. I mean, this is your decision too, obviously. It’s just that Johnny and Chanel are really, really great people, and– and everything just felt like it was falling into place. But if you don’t like the idea of them adopting–
No, it’s not that. It’s just– I wish that you’d talked with me about it before you just told Holly.
Right. You’re right. And I should have and I’m sorry.
It’s OK. I understand. Uh, anyway, you’ve known Johnny your whole life, right? So–so that should make things easier. You know, to really feel like we’re giving the baby to a loving home and that he or she is really going to have a happy life.
Right. And that’s all we want, right?
Yeah, that’s all we want. [tender music] But, you know, as much as you might love Johnny and Chanel and think that they’ll be the perfect parents, I’m afraid my mother might not. [suspenseful music]
[Tate sighs]
Why would Doug have gotten in the way of my Valentine’s Day with Tate? Grandma, why would you even say that?
Uh, well, I saw Julie after you left for Smith Island. And she mentioned that young Doug had offered to fetch a book of poems that was up at the cabin that Doug gave her. Uh, Doug, her husband.
Yeah.
OK. So, um, I mean, I was just worried that the two of you were going to have a collision course. I wanted to warn you, but I wouldn’t– I didn’t want to interrupt your evening.
Gotcha. OK, I think I understand. Anyway, it all worked out for the most part anyways. Tate was running late because Sophia had a scare, some cramps, so he had to take her to the hospital.
Is she all right?
Yeah, no, she’s totally fine. But while I was waiting for Tate, Doug showed up, and that’s when he found the book of poems.
Oh. Well, Julie is grateful that it was found. Doug, I mean, he’s a nice young man. He certainly has buoyed Julie’s spirits. I’m glad he showed up to her life when he did. 32

Do I sense a but?
No, h-he’s great. It’s just–
What?
I don’t know if you heard, but Julie recently discovered a diamond necklace that belonged to her grandmother. It was in a time capsule.
Oh, uh, yeah. I think my Grandma Maggie and Aunt Sarah said it was super expensive. Wait. I thought it was Julie’s brother, Steven, who stole it when he was in town for your grandfather’s funeral.
Yeah, that’s what everyone thinks. But it wasn’t Steven. It was me.
Holly, is there a problem between you and Doug?
No. No, not a problem exactly. It’s just– well, it’s just I was taken aback because Doug told me he had feelings for me.

Oh, I was just thinking about my grandfather. I keep reading this inscription that he wrote to you in this book. He really had a way with words.
He did, indeed. You know, this time of my life, there are very few material things that have any meaning for me. My wedding ring, the Horton ornaments, and family pictures. And those words written just for me by my darling in his own hand. I’m so fortunate they all made it through the fire. [chuckles]
Well, someone must have been watching over them.
A lot of Hortons, I believe. I really do believe that. I think that’s why the wonderful, little time capsule that my grandparents put together years ago survived. And–[sighs] If only– [somber music] If only my grandmother’s diamond necklace had not disappeared on my watch. [Julie sighs] I’ll never forgive myself for that. [tense music]
Julie, you can’t blame yourself for the necklace being stolen. The only person to blame is the thief. 38
Well, I blame myself for pointing the finger at my own brother. He was here for Doug’s memorial, and then he had to leave right away. You didn’t get a chance to meet him.
I wish I could have.
Yes, so do I. He and I had not seen each other in years. Of course, we vowed that we could stay in closer touch now.
That’s good.
Yeah. Times like this, you can’t have too much family around.
That’s for sure.
But he did send me a letter yesterday. A letter, not a text. And inside, he said many lovely things. He said how wonderful it was for us to reconnect. And then– [sighs] And then he said Ciara was wrong to accuse him of stealing the necklace. Quote, “I swear on– “I swear on the memory of my grandfather and my grandmother, I had nothing to do with it.” [tense somber music] See, sweetie, long ago, my darling, charming brother sort of flirted with the law in his younger days. But I know if he said that to me, if he swore on the memory of our grandfather and grandmother, he would never tell me a lie.
Right.
I was just so, so focused on Steven that I didn’t even imagine any other possibilities.
Well, what other possibilities do you think there could be?
Well–[sighs] I don’t know.
Julie, I’m just– I’m going to come out and say this, OK? I know that some people in this family think that I might have stolen the necklace. Is that what you think, too?
Doug told you he had feelings for you?
Well, it’s more of a blurt, you know? OK, so we were reading his Grandpa Doug’s inscription to Julie about first love and his feelings towards her back then. And I don’t know. I guess Doug got carried away, and that’s when he told me he had feelings for me.
I see. Um… how do you feel about that?
So, Mama, how do you feel about us adopting?
Well, if it’s the safest thing for you, I’m for it. [both chuckle]

Aw. Oh, you know, all I care about is you being happy, now. [sighs] But I do know about those adoption agencies with all the bureaucracy. So if there’s a maze of red tape, you leave it to Mama Mayor to cut through it.
[chuckles] I appreciate that. But it looks like we might not have to go through an agency. 45
No agency? What do you mean?
Well, the baby that we may be adopting… belongs to someone we know. [soft suspenseful music]
Well… I know this would be an answer to Tate and Sophia’s plans, but what does her mother think?
Uh, you know, she’s– she’s warming up to the idea, provided that the adoptive couple has… good Christian values.
Oh, I see.
Look, I know what you’re thinking, Grandma, OK? And honestly, Chanel and I aren’t sure that we necessarily fit the bill, either.
Tate, you know that my mom thinks having good Christian values means being members of the Korean Baptist Church.

Well, Johnny and Chanel are obviously not Korean, but I think Chanel might be Baptist.
Look, I like Chanel, and I really want this all to work out, but… you know, I just think that this couple passing the Amy Choi test is going to be an uphill battle.

Of course, I don’t think you stole the necklace. You weren’t even in town when it disappeared, let alone know about it. And if you ran into a little trouble with the law on your way to Salem, that does not make you the thief. Besides, I told you, your grandfather had difficulty with, uh, the legal establishment long ago. But he changed. Became a strong and loving man, this compassionate person. The best of men. [tender music]
I only wish I could… be more like him.
Well, you are. And I know that your grandfather is watching over us and is very happy that you are now a part of my life.

But getting back to the necklace, if you don’t suspect it was your brother–
Well, I was so afraid that he was going to be implicated, I didn’t even file a police report. But now I’m going to have to talk to JJ about this. Yeah, I realize it had monetary value because of the gems. But that necklace belonged to my grandmother, so that’s what makes it precious to me.
She was the diamond in this family. And my North Star.
It would mean the world to get it back.
Yeah, I’m sure. And I’m praying for that, too.
Well, when Doug told me he had feelings for me, it didn’t make me feel anything for him. I mean, I have a boyfriend, Tate, who I love so much. 52
Of course. I know that. But at the very least, it must have made you uncomfortable.
Yeah, it did. But Doug, like, totally backed off. I think he was actually mortified. Anyway, it’s really not a big deal.
But you did bring it up in the context of something that bothers you. I mean, is it because it bothers Tate? [somber music] 53
Tate, uh… he actually doesn’t know. I could tell when he found Doug and I at the cabin, he was a little jealous. And he even brought up how he keeps finding us together.
Oh.
Yeah. So the last thing I wanted to do was ruin my night with Tate, so I just didn’t say anything. I mean, what’s the point, right?
Well, yeah, I guess that’s the right course. As long as Doug is completely clear where you stand.

Well, he left in a hurry when Tate showed up, so we didn’t get to finish our conversation. So I just let it go. And I’d rather not bring it up again because–[sighs] Tate and I, we don’t need another problem added to our relationship. 55

Hello, Sophia, Tate. Did I hear you say something about a couple passing the Amy Choi test?
Yes, um… Tate was just telling me about these wonderful people who are interested in adopting our baby.
Oh. And who are these wonderful people?
Well, they’re– they’re Tate’s cousin, Johnny, and Johnny’s wife, Chanel. And they both come from very prominent Salem families.
I see. Though I don’t recognize their names from our church.
Well, they go to a different church. But they’re very active members. [chuckles] [suspenseful music] Uh, Chanel even runs the women’s Bible study group.
Oh, really?
Yeah. They’re–they’re religious. Like, probably even more religious than you. They are super religious. And I know that they’re going to be the perfect couple to adopt our baby.
Well, that is a relief, because I’m not giving my grandchild over to anybody who’s not. [tense music]
You know, any baby would be lucky to have you and Chanel as parents. And the important thing is that no matter what the religion, a child has a safe and loving home.
Yeah, I agree. [sighs] I just– I don’t know that Mrs. Choi would feel the same way. I mean, Chanel grew up going to church. She still goes on Easter and Christmas. I’m just not sure that that’s going to cut it for Sophia’s mom.
If there’s anything I can do to help, you’ll let me know.
So… you think this is a good idea?
Well, I know that Tate and Sophia are not ready to be parents. And I think that you and Chanel certainly are.

And it might just ease the transition to have the baby, you know, in the family. Are you considering an open adoption?
Uh, you know, honestly, we haven’t really gotten into any of the specifics yet. 60
Yeah. Well, there’s a lot to think about. And there are lots of pros and cons to a–to an open adoption. Whatever you decide, I wish you luck with it. [soft suspenseful music]

So you and Johnny would adopt Tate Black’s child?
[sighs] I know that he has an arrest record, but that was all just a big mistake.
Yeah, tempest in a teapot created by DA DiMera. I know. But I am not concerned about Sophia’s or Tate’s personal character. What concerns me is keeping an adoption in the family. Well, it–it can be difficult.
You’re thinking about Lani.
When I gave her to your Auntie Tamara to raise, you know how hard it was for me all those years, pretending to be Lani’s aunt when I was really her mama? It led to a whole lot of problems between us.
I know, I know. And that is why Johnny and I plan to be upfront with the baby from the very beginning. No secrets. And I’m not sure how involved Sophia will want to be or how much contact she’ll want to have with the baby. I mean, she is very driven to go off to college and then med school. She wants to be a doctor.
Oh, I see. What about Tate and Johnny? They’re cousins. That could be a source of conflict if you aren’t careful, or even if you are.
Mama, let’s not get ahead of ourselves now.
OK, OK, OK. I don’t mean to be negative. I just–I just want you to understand that yes, yes, it could be–it could be a wonderful arrangement, but–[sighs] It could also be much more complicated than you realize. [dramatic music]
Well, before any decision is made one way or the other, I want to meet this Chanel and Johnny.

Yeah, I spoke to him. Um, he said he’s going to talk to Sophia and that they’ll be in touch.

So how are things going with Tate and Sophia and the pregnancy?
Oh, actually, Tate’s with Sophia right now talking about adoption stuff. I guess now that her mom’s on board, we’re just– we’re all really hoping it works out.
Hmm. Well, this is, um… this is a very stressful situation for you, Holly. I mean, I’m sure it means a lot to Tate that you’re by his side through all of this.
How could I not be? I love him.
Yeah. Holly… have you even thought about what might happen if this adoption doesn’t work out? [suspenseful music]
Well, first of all, I’m trying not to go there. But if Tate and Sophia end up having to raise the baby together, then– then the three of us will just have to figure it out together.
I’m really sorry this necklace situation is so upsetting to you, Julie.
Oh, honey, don’t you worry about it. You’re not to blame. But thank you for caring. Thank you for retrieving this book of poetry. Ah, by the way, when you went up to the Horton cabin, did you run into Holly? Maggie said that Holly and Tate would be celebrating Valentine’s Day together.
Uh, yeah, I did run into Holly. But I got out of there as soon as Tate showed up.
Wise, wise. [chuckling] Don’t want to be a third wheel on Valentine’s Day.

I just feel so terrible that Chanel feels that she can’t share with me that she was in the hospital.
I think she just didn’t want to worry you. And if it’s any consolation, Johnny didn’t say a word to me until just recently.
Did you know about the adoption?
Not till just now. But I think it’s a wonderful idea. It’s a great solution for everybody involved. [soft dramatic music] Oh. You don’t think so?
No, don’t get me wrong. Now, I would love another grandbaby. I just–I just want them to fully understand what they’re getting themselves into.
And I think they do.

Well, it wasn’t the way that I wanted her to find out, but she was fine. I mean, once she got done panicking about the fact that there was something very wrong with me, which is why I kind of feel for Sophia. I know what it’s like to have a mom who loves you so much that sometimes it just feels like you can’t breathe, you know? 78

If I get one more college email today– I sent out all these applications, and now I don’t even know if I can go.
