While Marlena and Paul were with John, Paul blamed himself for what happened to John. Paul said he should have gone to the lab instead of letting his father go. Marlena tried to keep Paul from blaming himself. John called out to Marlena. They tried to convince John to get better for them. John let them know he was going to get better by lifting his thumb. There was a flashback of Paul asking John if he could call him dad. After the flashback, John told Paul that he was proud to be his father. At the hospital reception area, Brady talked to Belle about having to vote for EJ after Xander got arrested. Belle was upset with Brady for insulting EJ. She said despite EJ’s wrongdoings, he was trying to change. Belle called Shawn to check on Bo. When she got off the phone, Will showed up. He asked how John was and said Sami and Sydney would be there soon. They talked about Arianna being in Salem. Will went to John’s room and reunited with Marlena and Paul. He thanked Paul for getting John out of captivity. Marlena and Paul left Will alone with John.

Eric showed up at the hospital and joined the family. Marlena and Paul told everyone that John spoke to them. Belle showed up and joined everyone. They all looked at videos of Jude. While Will was with John, he flashed back to coming out to John. Will talked to John about Arianna and her rebellious behavior. Johnny showed up and greeted Will. Will told Johnny to talk to John. Eric showed up to see John. He said a prayer for John. Eric said John was a role model and father figure to him. Brady went to see John and reminded him about the man he has always been to him. He flashed back to John giving him a plaque from the gondola he and Isabella took before she died. Brady appreciated him keeping his mother alive for him. He said he wanted to be the father John was. Belle came in and the two talked about not wanting to see him like that. They said it wasn’t the first time they saw him like this but it was the first time family and friends rallied for him. Belle flashed back to being by John’s side before. She told him he would get through this. John spoke to her. Will asked Johnny what was going on with him. Johnny told him that he didn’t know where he fit in the family after finding out about his conception. Will said he was his brother and that wouldn’t change. He told Johnny that he could talk to him about anything. Before Johnny could say anything, Sonny called. When Will left to answer the call, Marlena showed up and told Johnny to go to the chapel with him. She let Johnny know that she was happy that he and Chanel were back together. Marlena asked if there was any news on EJ. Johnny told her that he left EJ on the ground and felt bad about it. Doing that made Johnny feel like he was like EJ. Marlena advised him that he wasn’t like EJ. At the DiMera mansion, Kristen told EJ that Rachel heard him arguing with Johnny the night he got shot. EJ said Rachel was probably having a bad dream. Kristen believed what Rachel said since he wasn’t getting along with Johnny. She said it was a shame that Johnny would be going to prison. EJ said Kristen and Rachel weren’t going to say anything. Kristen said she would keep Rachel quiet if he told her where her mother was. Marlena told everyone that that she spoke to the burn specialist and John’s recovery was considered a miracle. She told everyone to get some sleep. EJ agreed to Kristen’s demand, but he said her mother couldn’t come back to Salem. Marlena laid in bed next to John.

Rachel told Kristen that she saw Johnny arguing with EJ and he had a gun in his hand. She said what she saw was real. Kristen wondered why she didn’t say anything sooner. Rachel said she didn’t want to get Johnny into trouble. She said EJ got what he deserved since he kidnapped her grandmother. Kristen said she didn’t want EJ to get hurt. After Kristen kept questioning Rachel, she admitted that she didn’t see Johnny shoot EJ. Rachel said she ran away and went to sleep. She didn’t hear the gunshot. Kristen said they should keep what they know to themselves since Johnny didn’t do anything wrong. Rachel said the secret was eating her up inside. Brady talked to Kayla about John, but she said she didn’t have good news. She said he was steady but critical. When Kayla said Marlena was with John, Brady said he would see him later. He asked about Bo. She said the infection hadn’t stopped spreading. Kayla said it was starting to get fixed, but they had to wait and see if his organs were damaged. Changing the subject, Brady asked about the board meeting. They didn’t know if Xander was the right choice after everything that happened.

Belle talked to Jada about the drug Bo got and everything that happened. While they were talking, Jada realized Shawn was at the fire in the meth lab. Belle let her know that Shawn didn’t get hurt. She wanted Jada to get the person who attacked Philip. She told Jada that she was waiting for a warrant to get the footage from Salem Inn. Belle said she spoke to someone who saw Xander at the town square when Philip was attacked. Jada said she needed a motive to which Belle said she might have one. Belle said she wanted to wait until Philip woke up. Changing the subject, they talked about EJ’s case. Jada said there was no progress other than Ava. She said she didn’t think Ava shot EJ. In the square, EJ talked to Chad about Johnny trying to shoot him and said he deserved it. Chad offered to talk to EJ, but EJ didn’t want him to do it. EJ said he had to get to the board meeting before Xander got a leg up. Chad asked if he had anything to do with the drug being missing. EJ denied taking the drug and attacking Philip. He asked Chad to vote for him for the hospital. Chad said he would vote for him. Xander called Sarah and warned her not to keep ignoring him. He left a message telling Sarah that she wasn’t going to keep his daughter away from him. The next call he made was to Melinda. He wanted her to help him with the custody case and was willing to fight dirty if he had to. Maggie and Julie talked about what happened with Xander, Sarah, and Philip. She told Julie that she didn’t want anything to do with Xander if he attacked Philip. Julie said it would ruin things for the hospital if they voted for Xander and he turned out to be the one who attacked Philip. Maggie didn’t want to vote for EJ after everything he did. When they were finished talking, they went to the hospital. Kayla wanted to go over the proposals. She said the hospital was running out of time, but she was tired of Xander and EJ bullying everyone. Kayla said she had a plan. Xander was behind her. He asked if Sarah was working, but Kayla ignored him. When Xander kept pursuing it, Maggie warned him to stay away from her daughter and granddaughter. Xander said he was fond of Maggie, but he wasn’t going to let her keep him from his daughter. The ladies let him know he would have to go through them to get to Sarah. Xander told them things would be different when he bought the hospital. EJ and Chad showed up and let Xander know he didn’t have the hospital yet. When Xander, EJ, and Chad, left, Kayla told the ladies the plan. She said the board could vote anonymously so EJ and Xander wouldn’t be able to bully anyone. Everyone gathered to talk about the board meeting. Kayla let Brady know that the vote was tied. Before Brady could vote, Jada showed up to arrest Xander.

Alex was working at his desk when Belle showed up. She was there to talk about Philip. Alex let her know what happened. He thought he could have stopped the drug theft since he saw Kevin talking to Philip, Shawn and Steve. Alex didn’t understand why Philip pulled off the drug theft. Belle told him that he did it for Bo. She thought his intentions were good. Philip wanted to help Bo to make amends with Xander. Her concern was to bring Philip’s attacker to justice. She knew what the police didn’t know about Xander’s motives. Alex knew about Xander’s motives too. Belle wondered if he thought Xander was guilty. Alex didn’t say either way. Belle warned him that he had to talk about eventually. Alex told her that he saw Xander coming out of the Salem Inn that morning, and he was acting strange the same time Philip got attacked. He didn’t say anything because he owed Xander for not telling him what Philip did. Alex told her that they didn’t know for a fact that Xander did it. If he did, he didn’t know how he could keep working for Xander. If Philip didn’t wake up and Xander went to jail for it, what would happen to the company? Kate was worried about Philip, but Roman assured her that he looked better and would wake up. She wanted Roman to go home, and she would meet him after she talked to the doctor about Philip. Abe and Paulina arrived at the hospital and ran into Kate. They were there to see John but wanted to know how Philip was doing. Paulina couldn’t believe the police let Xander go. Abe reminded her that the D.A. couldn’t do anything without a motive. Paulina went to get coffee. Abe asked Kate why she thought Xander was the one who attacked Philip. Kate saw Philip’s doctor and avoided answering his question. Johnny and Roman were at the pub and talked about John and Philip being in the hospital. They talked about Eric, Sami and Sydney coming back to Salem to see John. Johnny felt like he wasn’t living up to John or Roman’s examples. Roman let him know that he was doing the right thing by processing everything that happened. Johnny noticed the gun lockbox was gone. Roman told him that he moved it since the gun was missing the night EJ was shot. He reminded Johnny that he told him about the gun disappearing the night EJ was shot. Johnny insisted that he didn’t shoot his father and stormed out of the pub. EJ called Brady to talk about the hospital vote. Brady told him what happened to his father and hung up the phone. Kristen walked in and heard what happened to John. She demanded to know what happened to John. EJ only knew that John was in an explosion and that he was near death. Kristen was shocked to hear that. She begged for John to be okay. EJ comforted her. They talked about her past with John. Kristen felt like Rachel would be devastated too since he’s her grandfather. She thought Rachel would be okay if she got good news about her grandmother. He didn’t give in to her hint. EJ wanted to get the vote for the hospital. She told him that she couldn’t deliver Brady’s vote and called him heartless. He knew how much John meant to his family and that Johnny would be devastated to lose his grandfather. EJ didn’t like that he couldn’t comfort Johnny. He walked out the room. Rachel went in the living room so Kristen talked to her about John. Rachel was upset to hear the news. Kristen wanted to know if she wanted to talk. Rachel didn’t feel good. Her stomach was hurting since the tea party. She admitted that she heard a gunshot. It didn’t happen in a dream.

Marlena told John that he was a hero to her and Bo. Carrie walked in the room and said he was a hero to everyone. They hugged each other, and Marlena broke down. Austin stayed behind to watch Noah’s graduation, but she had to be there. There were flashbacks of John and Carrie together. Carrie thought his greatest power wasn’t being a superhero. His power was being a dad. Thanks to John she had two amazing fathers. There were more flashbacks of John and Carrie together. Carrie touched John’s hand, and he moved a little. Carrie and Marlena looked at each other. Abe walked in the room and was happy to see Carrie. They reunited before Carrie and Marlena left Abe alone with John. There were flashbacks of John and Abe through the years. Abe told John that they were family and always would be. Belle and Johnny ran into each other at the town square. She told him that she was glad that the last words she said to her father were “I love you.” Belle warned him that he didn’t want to leave anything unsaid to his father. Johnny got upset and told her that his father was evil. Later, Belle arrived at the hospital and saw Carrie. They embraced each other. Carrie told her that John squeezed her hand. She believed he was going to make it. Marlena was by John’s side and told him not to leave her ever again. EJ spotted Johnny at the town square and called out to him. Johnny tried to walk away. EJ went after him and stumbled before falling on the ground. Johnny rushed to him. EJ pulled himself up, and Johnny walked away from him. Kate arrived at the pub and told Roman that the doctors hoped Philip would regain consciousness soon. Roman told her about his conversation with Johnny. He said that he didn’t shoot EJ, but Roman wasn’t sure he believed him. Kristen asked Rachel what she remembered about the night EJ was shot. Rachel told her that she woke up and heard yelling. She went downstairs and saw Johnny fighting with EJ while he was holding a gun.

Gabi was upset about Arianna being gone all night and not responding to her messages. She was thankful that JJ helped her since they weren’t talking to each other. While they were eating, Gabi thought the worst could have happened to Arianna. JJ told her about the different things that could have happened, but thought she was with a boy. Gabi didn’t believe Arianna was with a boy. Arianna and Doug talk about being with each other again since he didn’t have a girlfriend. Sophia met with Melinda to help with the adoption papers. She let Melinda know that the father of the baby was okay with the decision, but her mother wasn’t. Melinda said it wasn’t an issue since she was 18 but things would go better if her mother didn’t object. Amy showed up and wondered why Sophia was with Melinda. Sophia told her that Melinda was helping her with the adoption process, but Amy refused to let Melinda help her. When Sophia tried to explain to Amy what was going on, Melinda said Amy didn’t have a say. Melinda opened up about giving her baby up to her parents when she got pregnant as a teenager. She said she and Haley made up, but she died. Melinda said she regretted not being her mother, but she did the right thing by giving her up. She advised Amy not to lose Sophia over this.

After Tate talked to Brady, he rushed out of house. Chanel talked to Johnny about filling up their home. Johnny thought she was talking about children, but she let him know she was talking about furniture. He checked his phone and got a message about John. After Johnny finished talking to Sami, he told Chanel about John. Chanel tried to comfort Johnny by telling him that John was a strong person. Johnny wasn’t so sure because the strongest men couldn’t live forever. Tate went to see John at the hospital and ran into Johnny and Chanel. He told them that it didn’t look good for their grandfather. Chanel tried to comfort Tate as Arianna and Doug left the Salem Inn. Arianna didn’t want her family to see them together. Tate told Johnny and Chanel about Sophia meeting an adoption lawyer. Gabi and JJ saw Arianna in the square. She wanted to know where Arianna was. Arianna said she was with a friend. Javi showed up and it leads to an argument. After they finished arguing, Gabi apologized to Javi for firing him. She asked if things were good between them. Javi said they were getting there. When Javi and JJ left, Arianna told Gabi that she didn’t lie about where she was. They ended up arguing until JJ came back with news about John. Gabi thanked JJ for his help as she and Arianna left. Doug met with Leo to ask for his help with finding the person that Melinda sold the necklace to. He told Leo that he needed someone who was used to dealing with shady people. Leo agreed to help him. Johnny was upset about seeing John hooked up to machines. Chanel comforted him. Johnny said he wanted to name their baby after John. Chanel said it was a great thing to do one day. They ended up talking about his job at Titan. Chanel asked if he wanted to work with Xander. Johnny said Xander didn’t get arrested for Philip’s attack. He said he needed a job and didn’t want to have to rely on his DiMera money to support their family when they had kids. Amy thanked Melinda for telling her story. She apologized to Sophia and said she wanted the best for her. When Amy got a message from work, she left to take care of it. Sophia thanked Melinda for her help. Tate showed up and didn’t want Melinda’s help. He told her about Melinda’s involvement in Nicole and Eric’s baby’s kidnapping. Melinda said it showed what she would do to help her clients.

Marlena sat at John’s bedside and pleaded with him not to leave her. Steve walked in the room and said that Stefano may have been the Phoenix, but he had nothing on John. There were scenes of flashbacks of John. John coded, but Kayla was able to revive him. Steve told Kayla that the drug was delivered to Bo. If he survived, they had John to thank for it. Later he told Belle and Paul about what John did to help save Bo’s life. Maggie yelled at Xander for what he did to Philip. She told him that Victor wouldn’t want him in the house if he knew what he did to Philip. Xander wouldn’t fight for the house, but he planned to fight for Victoria. She was going to support any decision Sarah made where Victoria’s concerned. Maggie reminded him that she kept Victor in check when he got out of line, and she planned to do the same thing to him. Xander didn’t understand why everyone catered to Philip whenever he did something wrong. Maggie reminded him that she fought for his relationship over and over, but she was done giving him chances. She was done because he broke his promise to her and Sarah. He made them look like fools. Maggie refused to forgive him for that. He reminded her that she and Sarah kept him in the dark about Philip. They did it because they were trying to protect him from himself. She had him removed and told him never to set foot in the mansion again. Sarah and Kayla talked about their problems when Brady arrived. He wanted to know if she knew what happened to Philip. Sarah wasn’t ready to talk about it yet. Her day didn’t pick up when Xander walked into the hospital to see Philip. She warned him that she would call security. Sarah let him know what happened to John and that he was responsible for what happened to him. Xander told her that everything could have been prevented if he told her about the forgery.

Marlena prayed for a miracle for John. John saved her life and her soul. There were flashbacks of Marlena’s first possession. She reminded God that they faced Stefano, Kristen and the Devil. Marlena begged God to let John live. Belle arrived at the chapel with Marlena. She reminded her mother that she had John’s medical proxy. Belle remembered how bad it was when Marlena fought for her life in a similar situation. She told her that John wanted to fight for his life if something happened to him. Belle believed he would come back to them. Paul was upset that he didn’t have John in his life for long. He felt like he won the lottery when John was his father. Paul told Brady that he and Andrew planned to get married in Salem. Xander and Belle ran into each other at the hospital and got into an argument about what he did. He called her out for covering for EJ and Philip. Steve and Kayla managed to comfort each other because of the bad things happening around them. Maggie realized that Victor’s portrait was missing. Xander was in a dark alley slashing the portrait before he trashed it.

Marlena went to Kayla’s office and told her John wasn’t home yet. She said he was getting a miracle cure for Bo. When Marlena suspected that Kayla knew about it, Kayla told her about the heist. Kayla apologized for not saying anything about it and for keeping John from coming home. Marlena understood and said she and John had the rest of their lives together. They talked about Bo, Steve, and John stepping up for them. Unfortunately, their heroic side came with a price since there wasn’t a way to know when they would be coming home. Marlena said Steve and John would make sure Bo came home. Kayla brought up how Bo was with her mother when she got the Alzheimer’s treatment. She suggested that Marlena go home and get some sleep and wait for John. Marlena said she was too excited to sleep. Kayla said John would do what he had to do and come home. John showed up to help Shawn, Steve, and Dr. Russell. He worked on the security system. Dr. Russell was upset that someone else was involved. Steve reassured Dr. Russell that John was the man for the job. Shawn let Dr. Russell know that he found Asher’s phone.

Bo was unconscious in his bed. Hope kissed him and wished him a happy anniversary. Since she knew he could hear her, she was going to keep talking to him. There was a flashback of Bo and Hope getting married. Hope wondered where all the time went. Ciara showed up. Hope told her that Chelsea was on her and she hoped Shawn would be there soon. Ciara told Hope that she was scared. The priest gave Bo his last rites, but Hope wanted to wait until everyone was there to say goodbye. Hope wanted to check on something and wanted Ciara to be strong. Ciara sat with Bo and let him know that Ben fixed his bike after she crashed it. She said she would give anything for him to be fixed. Ciara said he made her feel safe. She said she didn’t know how she could say goodbye to him again. An unconscious Bo dreamed that he was walking around the town square. He found something Ciara gave him. Bo sat at the monument and spoke to the Hortons. He wondered why he was there. Bo went to the Brady Pub and saw Steve and Kayla eating chowder. Bo tried to talk to them, but they didn’t hear him. He ended up outside and tried to get Steve and Kayla to let him in. Bo’s machine started going off and Ciara called the doctor. She asked Bo to stay with her. The doctor was able to calm Bo down. Julie called Hope and left a happy anniversary message for her. She thought of Bo. When she saw Doug’s picture, she asked him to look out for Bo and Hope. Steve said they needed someone to help with security at the meth lab. He said they needed someone to disable it with John. Hope showed up. Shawn wondered what she was doing there. Hope said she wanted to help. She went to help John. They cut their wires at the same time. When Hope and John went inside, Steve Shawn kept watch outside. Shawn was concerned about Hope being there instead of being at the hospital. Steve said if Hope was there, she must believe they could do it. The lab was a mess. There was a man against the wall. Everyone put on protective gear. Dr. Russell saw the drug. When he screamed, the man woke up and attacked him. The drug spilled everywhere. As a fire broke out, the man pulled out a knife. John tried to stop the guy. They fought on the ground as Hope pushed Dr. Russell out of the lab. Hope tried to go back for John, but the flames were too high. Later on, the fire department put out the fire and said they found a body. The man with the knife was the body. John was on a gurney. Shawn called Kayla to tell her John was coming in and was badly hurt. Dr. Russell said he would ride with John in the ambulance. John opened his hand and showed them he had the miracle drug. He said to save Bo. Hope and Shawn went to the hospital and said they had the drug they needed. She sat next to Bo and wanted him to fight for them. They gave Bo’s doctor the vial and she started the treatment. Steve told Dr. Russell that the man who attacked him was dead. He gave Dr. Russell a box of the drug vials. Steve said John protected it with his life and now he was fighting for his life. Marlena wanted Kayla to tell her how bad John was. Kayla said it was bad. She said he had smoke inhalation and third-degree burns. Marlena said the kids were on their way and that she wasn’t leaving John’s side. She told John not to leave. Steve walked in and said Stefano may have been the Phoenix, but he had nothing on John. There were flashbacks of John. He told Marlena he loved her before he crashed.

Brady tried to talk to Belle, but she was distracted because she was looking for Kevin’s roommate on the computer. At Black Patch, Steve and Shawn searched the Dark Web to see if they could find out information about the drug. Shawn found out that Asher bought a car he couldn’t afford. Belle found out Asher was arrested for drugs and that Hope was the one who arrested him. She called Shawn and told him Hope might be able to help him. When Shawn got off the phone, he called Hope. She told him Asher went to preschool with Zack. Hope said he hung out with a dangerous crowd and did drugs. She said she sent Asher to get treatment to get his life back on track. Steve was curious if it worked. He and Shawn traced a name that Asher used in high school to buy drugs on the Dark Web. Steve set up a meeting with Asher and then told Dr. Russell what was going on. They told Dr. Russell that they would get the drug back for him if he let them use it for Bo. Steve let him know that they would take the hit if something went wrong. Dr. Russell agreed to the terms. They went to the warehouse. Dr. Russell was surprised to find out it was a meth lab. He asked if places like that blew up. While they were trying to find a way in the lab, Hope called Shawn to tell him they were getting a priest to give Bo his last rites. Steve told Shawn to go see Bo so he could say goodbye. Shawn said he wasn’t leaving when they were getting close.

Belle and Brady talked about Tate for a while and then talked about her helping Shawn. Brady wondered if they were good. Belle said they were, but he had to accept that she was with EJ. While they were talking, they argued over EJ kidnapping Rachel Blake. Belle said EJ might have kidnapped Rachel but that was before he changed. Brady said EJ might have changed but not enough to bring Rachel back. Belle suggested that he vote for what was best for the hospital and not out of revenge. She said Xander beat Philip viciously. Brady reminded her about what EJ did to their family and it would be hard for Marlena to work with him. After they argued, they apologized to each other. Marlena came in and said she had bad news. She said Roman called and told her about Bo. Brady and Belle were surprised by the news. When someone was at the door, they yelled surprise. It turned out to be Paul. He said John was okay and had to make a pit stop. Steve and Shawn continued to get in the meth lab when a hooded figure showed up. Dr. Russell wanted to know who the hooded figure was. Steve said it was John and that he always saved the day.
