THIS STILL NEEDS EXTENSIVE EDITING!

There’s a woman on the roof of the hospital threatening to jump. She asked for you by name

and will only talk to you.

NICOLE: Hello? How can I help? Kneel or so help me. [screaming and shouting]

[gunshot]

[screaming] The shame you have brought on this family. HAYLEY: I guess dreams really do come true. BILL: And this is just the beginning. HAYLEY: I’ve never been happier. Danielle Dupree, I’m here to place you under arrest for attempted murder. You have the right to remain silent. Son, if this is about Danielle firing a weapon at the wedding, there’s been some kind of miscommunication back at the station. The officer on the scene interviewed everybody and determined the charges were unmerited. Mr. Hamilton came forward with new charges.

My dad did this?

Of course he did. I thought I was waking up from my nightmare. I’m still in it. Since when does my ex-husband, who is not a part of the DA’s office, have an iota of say in who gets charged? Excellent question. Explain yourself, Jacob. It’s not unusual for victims to advocate for police to pursue charges. Bill presented the video evidence and… CHELSEA: My damn video. He’s not answering the phone. That coward. He presented it to the state attorney’s office, who determined it was enough evidence for an arrest. I can’t stop these wheels from moving. I have to bring you in. He can’t take another thing from me. Did my father request the added humiliation of the arrest being handled by my mom’s son-in-law? My lieutenant agreed this should be handled with discretion. So I figured someone who knows and respects the family should be… You dare use the word “family” and “respect” while Mirandizing your own mother-in-law? I’m just doing my job. When you called me tonight, you told me you were the job but you were my husband first. If you meant a word of that, Jacob, don’t you dare put those cuffs on my mother.

Thank you.

Mm-hmm. Thank you. [R&B music playing] Kimberly. Yeah. Bill Hamilton here. Listen, loved this morning’s piece. You are fearless when it comes to taking down the long-standing institutions people once thought were untouchable. And along those lines, if you’re looking for a shot at an exclusive, one of the gates’ finest should be getting arrested right about now. WOMAN [over P.A.]: Nurse to room 818. MAN [over P.A.]: Nurse to the third floor. [elevator bell dings] [wind whistling] [phone vibrating] Who is that calling? Because if it’s security, I promise you… You wanted me alone. That’s what you got. If you get any closer, I promise you… If you get any closer, I’ll jump. I don’t think that’s what you want. You asked for me. Not wanting to be alone is a positive sign. [chuckling] What if I just want an audience? [laughing] I hope, however we’re connected, I can help you. We don’t know each other. Not directly. I feel like I do. You’re that psychiatrist that… I’ve seen profiled in those glossy magazines. Oh, you must be the best. [Leslie crying] Please help me. Please help me. ♪ ♪ Welcome back, Dr. McBride. And Joey. Oh, yeah, that Joey, he’s something else. You know, you had me thinking he was some thug when he’s just a solid dude trying to carry on his family business. In another life, we could have been bros. Now that might be pushing it a bit. Yeah, your boss did have some scary moments. He’s a tough guy to read. Never come back here again. Give up gambling for good. [R&B music playing] Hello. Uh-oh. That look has bad news written all over it. A text from Naomi. She and Jacob, they’re not just couple friends, they’re couple goals, but tonight might put a strain on that, and it just makes me so glad that you fight fires and not crime. Uh, more details, Ash. You’re doing that thing where your mind races faster than your words. Remember how the Duprees had their press conference to defuse the whole Dani shooting up the wedding thing? Yeah, she got lucky the whole world took the Dupree side. Well, the Dupree luck might have run out. Dani just got arrested. Wow, that’s rough. But how does that put a strain on Naomi and Jacob? He was the arresting officer. Last time I saw a pair of those, I was the one playing officer. Just ask Bill. Oh, wait. He’s already calling your shots, isn’t he? I’m still your son-in-law. I can’t believe this is happening.

I convinced him to kill the lights and the sirens, but if I don’t execute this warrant in a timely manner, things could get ugly. Jacob is right about that much. We better move before we have a SWAT team at the gates. Baby, I’ve been where you are, seeing my reflection in a pair of cuffs. We used them to prove how powerless they were. Dani, no one can take your dignity. Have at it, Detective. I will be representing my mother. Repeat the charge for the record. Attempted murder. Dani Dupree, you have the right to remain silent. DANI: I know. I have the right to remain silent. Anything I say will be held against me. So what happens if I say that this arrest is a load of crap? Will you charge me with telling the truth? Let’s go. Do you understand the charges that I’ve read to you? Oh, yes. Mom is right. You let my father get to you and turn you into his errand boy. I might hold off on some of that pride. I know how hard you all fought to get me home tonight. And I hate what Bill put us through. But there’s a part of me that wonders why he did it. I was done. I told Hayley that plain as day. I let him go. And as soon as I did that, he is on the phone getting me arrested. And you’re interpreting that as what? I think deep down, this was his invitation back to the dance. Tonight, Bill could have had me locked up. Instead, he dropped the charges. This wasn’t some boy pulling your pigtails to get your attention in fifth grade. You’d be in a cell right now if it weren’t for his new wife who threatened to leave him.

This was all Hayley.

No. No one makes Bill Hamilton do what he doesn’t want to do. I know it doesn’t make sense. But I think this was his way to get my attention back. You cannot mean that. Despite everything, I love that miserable, wicked man. And if this was an overture… …I’m ready to take him back in a heartbeat.

THIS STILL NEEDS SOME EDITING!

This is the second time I caught you creeping in my mom’s things. Give me a second, Kat. I need to close this. What did you just delete? What are you hiding? Nothing. You seem upset. Not upset. Astute. Laura usually does her work at the home office. Why are you in my mom’s hospital office alone, messing around with her computer?

It’s called working.

I’m calling it messy. The Duprees have a family motto: “Fool me once, it’s on me. Fool me twice, it’s your funeral.” [sighs] [indistinct police radio chatter] [phone vibrating] I was just staring at this stack of legal briefs, thinking I’d rather be staring at Detective Jacob Hawthorne in his briefs. [chuckles] I love the way you think, woman. Let the record show, though, you’re the one who caved and called after

we just saw each other.

But we weren’t alone. Hmm. How much longer do you have to work? It’s hard to say. Listen, Naomi. You know I love you, right? Mrs. Hamilton. Or… Ms. Dupree. Forgive me. What should I call you? Thirsty. Yes, ma’am. The usual? Time to embrace the unusual.

Surprise me.

[phone vibrates] You got it. [“No Consequences” playing] ♪ ‘Cause there’s♪ ♪ No consequences♪ ♪ There’s nothing to lose♪ ♪ You could burn this house right down…♪ [song continues faintly] [laughs softly] ♪ ♪ [upbeat music playing] [line ringing] CHELSEA [recorded]: Hey, it’s Chels. Leave a message, but while you’re leaving it, please note that I probably won’t ever hear it.

Text me.

[line beeps] Chelsea Bear. It’s Momager Bear. Your presence is requested tonight at your grandparents’. I have something earthshaking to share, and you are going to want to hear it in person. I need you to know that there is nothing and no one above you, and I would never, ever intentionally cause you a moment of pain.

You think I don’t know that?

Yeah, I just… I needed you to hear it. And I needed to say it. I love you something fierce, Naomi. I love you more. EVA: Why do I feel like I wandered into one of those fancy shops where the salespeople eye me like I have sticky fingers? Victim act. Good pivot. Might have worked if I didn’t see you just blank that screen. I blanked the screen because even though you’re Dr. Richardson’s daughter, you aren’t authorized to… Exactly. I can’t see those files, and I’m related to her. You just hung up your apron at the salon, but you have full access? Don’t even. Mom’s still here. Let’s ask her. Nicole’s probably not answering because she’s still in the psych unit finishing up her rounds. Now, if you want to go run and whine to your mommy, go right ahead. And while I’m gone, you’ll bolt. Since I’m not the one with the issue, I’ll stick around and make sure nothing conflicts with that big award ceremony she has coming up. Everything’s all set with that. Except for last-minute details. You’re right. I’m new to all this. But I am not new to scoping out a client’s needs. Just give me a break, Kat. I’m trying to make the most out of the opportunity Nicole so graciously gave me. Nah, I’m not buying it. Mom should be out of her rounds by now. We’ll both be back and see what you’re really about. I didn’t come looking for this job. It got dropped in my lap by some random curveball. You’re saying Laura getting slammed by that biker is your lucky day? Stop twisting everything. I’ve got no beef with you, but you seem to be gunning for me. Maybe you should ask yourself why. Oh, I know exactly why. And now my mother will know, too.

There’s my award winner.

[chuckles] They haven’t given it to me yet, and who knows if they still will? Now that the Dupree name is synonymous with wielding a deadly weapon. You’re synonymous with grace, brains

and beauty.

[laughs] For instance, the curve of your neck and the taste of your… [laughing]: Ted, stop. Remember where we are. Remember who loves you. MAN [over P.A.]: Nurse Hugo to ICU. I have one more patient to see. And I have a few files to update. Meet me in my office when you’re done. Oh, how much of that smush did you have to witness? You don’t have to be embarrassed when your husband’s being romantic like that. Some of us would kill to have what you’ve got. [elevator bell dings] Mom, I’ve been looking all over for you. You will never guess what that queen of locks did. Queen of locks? You mean Eva? Do you have another hairdresser on your payroll? I didn’t need to see the video. I was there, George. Thank you for your concern. I know you can empathize with… after what you went through with Grayson. Send Adelaide our love, too. Was that George giving you the business about our girl?

I set him straight.

Mm-hmm. How many calls have you fielded

from the ladies who lunch?

Too many. Remember all the calls we got when Dani begged us to go to New York and start modeling? I thought she had perfected the art of the tantrum then. She’s outdone herself with the revival. If we just hadn’t forced her to go to that wedding, she never would have touched that gun. Bill didn’t give us a choice. We cannot go back, my love. All we can do is pray our beautiful daughter can finally move forward. You sound happy. Jacob just called a little while ago just to tell me he loves me. Mom, I’m sorry. I didn’t think. Naomi, honey, never apologize for being happy. I tell you, I am so grateful for the grace I have received. I may hate Bill forever, but after that stunt I pulled, I am glad that your father is still breathing and that I am not dripped out in handcuffs and an orange jumpsuit. So not my color. You know, I thought Jacob’s call was the best thing to happen to me today, but hearing you sound like you might be a close second. Well, there’s more where that came from. When you’re wrapped, come on to the Grands’. I’m gathering the whole family together. Some things are best done face to face.

Like what?

Oh, gotta go. Be there tonight. Later, baby. Dani Long Legs! [grunting rhythmically] [laughs] Vandanna! Vanessa McBride, I thought you were never going to get here.

We have to get you a drink.

Yes. Doug McBride. Joey Armstrong. I’ve seen you around the club. I like to take private meetings in my car. You ever read that book The Lincoln Lawyer? No. No? Michael Connelly’s a genius. You should check it out. You look a little nervous there, McBride. Everything all right? I’m thinking maybe I made a mistake. R-Randy didn’t think we should meet. I think maybe I should have listened to him. Maybe. Or maybe we should talk it out. Find out if you got into the right car… or if you should hitch another ride home. I thought we put this to bed the other day. That was before I caught Eva creeping again on your work computer, Mom. When you caught Martin and me doing that once, you grounded us for a week. You really think Eva was snooping in my patient files? Well, you gave your passcode keychain to the kingdom to an imperfect stranger, someone you barely know and wouldn’t even trust to do your hair. Eva is not a stranger. Mona recommended her, and we trust Mona implicitly. Mona’s smart, but Eva’s slick. WOMAN [over P.A.]: Nurse to pediatrics. [sighs] You think Eva is some type of grifter out to steal my patient files and blackmail my clients? It’s possible. You’re reaching, Kat. That girl has stepped up, and she has been a capable, courteous and effective assistant. So you’re just gonna ignore this transgression? Alleged transgression. And this will all soon be moot. Laura will be back at work, and Eva will be out of our lives with a glowing recommendation. I’m telling you, her vibe is off. Not just off. Wrong. Dead wrong. You expect me to fire someone based on vibes? Baby, the only one having bad feelings is you. So my opinion doesn’t count? I don’t need you to be friends with Eva. Do I need you to see her as a person of value? You should want to give her a hand up. You mean like a makeover? ‘Cause she could use that. You know what is not a good look? My spoiled brat of a daughter looking down on someone based on vibes.

Mom, if you would just listen…

No, you listen. Just like when you were a little girl. I need you to sit and spin and think on this. And do not revisit this with me until you realize how wrong you are. WOMAN [over P.A.]: Orderly to 211. So I’ve been playing cards since I was a kid. M-Me and my boys, we got this Saturday night game. Small stakes. Anyway, when V and I sent our kids off to college, I ended up spending a lot more time at a casino and ended up owing more than what I had on hand. So you went to Randy? Yeah. Yeah, we-we have a history. Randy was this scrawny little kid, and one day, I found myself on the opposite side of a bully, and there was Randy offering up a punch. We got our asses kicked. [laughs] And now Randy’s still that little kid looking out for you. But he doesn’t see what I see. A grown man responsible for his own debts. That number look familiar? That’s exactly what I owe to the penny. How did you know? I know you own the casino, but… I take an interest in my clientele, Doug. And they become friends. I can always use more friends. Friends like you. For my daughter to strut wearing those Walking Deadrucksacks. Make it happen. I’m so sorry. I hate to be rude. It’s good seeing you handling business. You mean instead of a .45? [laughs] Yes, this is preferable. I’m just glad you can make time.

What are we celebrating?

Me, of course. Grands? I was just texting you.

Granddaddy indulged me.

[laughing] Cassiopia was visible tonight. [laughing] You see, when we’ve been married as long as you have, I hope Jacob and I are strolling under the stars, too. Aw. And I’m sorry for barging in, but Mom insisted I get over here ASAP. Oh, we got the same vague call, too. Okay. Any inkling? Good surprise or bad? And your mother sounded confident, grounded. I think Dani’s bearing good news. Or… she’s run out

of things to break.

[laughter] I’m here. It better be for a good reason. You look like you just got out of bed. I told you I was meeting up with a couple of new friends. Emphasis on “couple.” What’s up?

Eva.

Seriously? You chose this time and place to bitch about the temp? This place because when I was little, my dad used to bring me out here to see the… the skyline and beyond are mine for the taking. And this time, because tonight, I caught Eva creeping on my mom’s work computer. News flash: assistants often use computers. She’s my mom’s personal assistant. My mom’s personal office is at the house. But her person is at the hospital. Checking Aunt Nicole’s iCal at whichever office is just part of the gig. I’ve hired and fired enough assistants to know it’s suspicious. And when I told my mom that, she acted like I was being privileged. Can you believe that? [scoffs] Okay, I know I can be bougie to the max, but this isn’t that. Something is off about Eva. She makes my baby hair stand at attention. Then whip out the gel for five more minutes before she’s out of there. Cuz, you are putting way too much emphasis on a passing hiccup in your big, beautiful life. But Eva doesn’t feel temporary. It feels like… I don’t know, like she’s being diabolical and strategic. [both laughing] What? Ah, why does she bug me so much? Maybe it’s my mama’s drama that’s got us all acting out of character. Oh, like bringing home two total strangers? That’s completely in character for me. But deciding that the new girl can’t sit with us at our table because she wore combat boots in your mom’s office? That reeks of some high school “mean girl” shizz. You were never that girl, Kat. I’m still not. [scoffs] Oh, uh, you summoned me to the top of your daddy’s castle, where he told you that the world was yours. We are literally standing in your “special spot” looking down on one of your mom’s subjects. The assistant. Just pretend for one second I’m right about this.

Then what?

[phone chimes] [sighs] I got to jet. Mom wants me at the Grands’ for some big announcement.

Thanks for coming, Chels.

Aw. I’m sorry for making this about me. I could give a masterclass on that. My mom is at the lowest point in her life, and all I can think about is telling her I want to quit modeling to work full-time on our purse empire. And my advice? Tell her, stat. My advice? Let it go. We just barely survived Hayley’s insurgence, and now I’m supposed to be okay with this perfect stranger coming into my family’s life? Not happening. [sighs heavily] Ted. Hi. Nicole got hung up and I thought I’d wait for her here. Okay, well, um, I’ll just go. Don’t rush off. Tell me, how are things going with you?

Me?

Yeah. I know my wife’s schedule can be a lot sometimes. I’m just happy that Nicole, after all these years, hasn’t figured out that she can do so much better. But you’re a godsend, and she adores you. And she’s a good judge of people. You don’t have to be so nice. Well, it’s the truth. Try it. Tell me, what’s bothering you? Nothing. See you tomorrow. Eva, I can’t let you leave like this. I think I know what’s going on here. You leave any couture for the rest of us? I just realized my closet is a mausoleum. Everything I wore was to make Bill look good, so everything’s gotta go. I love that the first step in your rebirth is shopping. Please tell me the next step is something tall, dark and fine. Like gym rat hottie over there? VANESSA: Diego. The club’s most in-demand trainer. I hear it’s because he specializes in locating the G spot. So, what’s happening with you? Things good with Doug? I didn’t know an empty nest meant an empty house. Now that the twins are away at college, Doug’s never home.

Then again, neither am I.

You okay with that? It works for us. Doug and I are still partners. The hearts and flowers and sex have long faded, but when we’re actually around each other, we’re content and comfortable. And we trust each other not to let anything or anyone screw up this thing we’ve built. I used to think that about Bill. Just because you’ve had it on lock for years doesn’t mean you don’t need to keep locking it down. I told myself Hayley was a passing fling until Bill was about to say, “I do.”

[phone vibrates]

Oh, there’s my cue. I can’t be fashionably late for a family gathering that I called.

Wish me luck.

You don’t need it. You are Dani Dupree.

[laughs]

You’re right. Ms. McBride. You forgot something. Yes, I did. So how does this work, exactly? Do I, do I sign a marker or… These hands, they might not look like much, but they can get me back in the black. A few valve repairs and some stents, and I can pay you back

with interest and…

Doug, relax. Your debt’s been paid. I took care of what you owe my casino, and… for a little extra touch, I’d like to float you some more.

Look, I can explain.

Is it the Dupree of it all?

You got me.

[laughs] They can be intimidating. But you belong here, Eva. Never doubt that. I know your parents must be very proud of you. Well, sort of. I never knew my dad. And my mom died when I was little. I don’t even remember her. But I have Leslie, who raised me. And, yeah, she’s proud, for sure. I’m sorry to hear about your parents, especially since they’re not here for you when you’ve been mistreated.

I’m not mistreated.

I know Kat came at you before. Has she done that again? She’s just looking out for Nicole.

I’m not mad at it.

That’s our father’s parents. We wanted her to think that the world was hers. I guess we overdid it. And it seems like you got a taste of her entitlement. That’s okay. If you ever run into that again from anyone, you have me as a resource. You mean that, don’t you? I’m a man of my word, Eva. Sure. Look, it’s okay if Kat doesn’t like me, but I don’t just want this job.

I need it.

Are you strapped for money? Isn’t everybody? WOMAN [over P.A.]: Code blue. Look, and working for Nicole makes me feel like I can learn and grow and have the same kind of place in this world you gave your daughter. Whatever Kat felt about you, I think she was off base. I feel it. I was just telling Kat the same thing.

Really?

Of course. Our daughter can be a little hard on people, especially new people. But you just keep doing what you’re doing, and you won’t be going anywhere. At least until Laura gets back. Well, I really hope she gets well, but I do like working for you. Remember that. You work for me, and Kat works for Ted. The only business of mine that Kat is involved in is the business of being my daughter. She does not hire or fire or even ask for so much as a latte. I wish I could say that Kat will get over this and stop making your life difficult, but that’s not her way. Understood. Any, um, advice on how to deal with her? [chuckles] Don’t give her any oxygen, and hopefully she’ll stop breathing down your neck. But you know where to find us if the situation escalates.

I would hate to lose you.

And I have some advice. Get out of here and don’t give us or our colorful family any more thought. I’ll try to do that. And, Eva, when you get to the office tomorrow, make yourself at home. She seems like a good kid.

I feel bad.

Why? You didn’t do anything. WOMAN [over P.A.]: We need a nurse to trauma bay seven. [hushed]: Eva. [hushed]: You can’t be here. Nicole and Ted are just down the hall. I got your video. I watched it a dozen times. If I knew the video would upset you, I wouldn’t have sent it.

But you’ve got to go.

Imagine being that entitled that you think that the whole world revolves around you and your family, that untouchable. And him looking at her like she’s freaking Beyoncé. He used to look at me like that. You’ve waited years for this. You can’t just blow it on impulse. People build gates to make them feel safe. Kat called Eva in her mother’s office again. She put her on notice that she wouldn’t fool her a second time. Eva felt like Kat was treating her badly. Kat wanted to know why she was looking at her files. She let Kat know that she wasn’t supposed to see them. Kat called her out for saying that. If she couldn’t see them as her daughter, Eva had no business looking at them either. Kat wanted to call her mother to find out if it was okay for her to look at her computer. She didn’t get through to her mother so she was about to leave. Eva let her know that she didn’t go after the job. Kat still planned to talk to her mother about Eva. Leslie saw Ted and Nicole flirting with each other at the hospital. She hid in the background so he wouldn’t see her. Kat ran into Nicole and wanted to tell her about Kat. Doug met with Joe in his car. He thought he made a mistake meeting with him. Joe wondered if he got into the right car or should get in someone else’s car. Kat let Nicole know that Eva was looking at her computer. Nicole wasn’t sure she could believe it because she was a good worker. Kat said Eva’s vie was wrong. Nicole didn’t want to let her go because she had bad vibes about Eva. Doug talked to Joe about how he and Randy knew each other. Joe showed him the debt he owed the casino. Doug wondered how he knew how much he owed. He always knows about the people who gamble at his casino.

Kat told Chelsea about what happened with Eva and her mother. Chelsea thought she should leave Eva alone because she is temporary. Kat felt like she wasn’t temporary. It felt like she was up to something. Chelsea thought she should stop worrying about Eva, but Kat wasn’t going to let it go. Eva was about to leave Nicole’s office when Ted arrived. She was about to leave, but Ted wanted to talk to her. He thought Nicole could do better with her career. Ted thought she was a blessing to Nicole. Eva wanted to leave, but he asked her to stay. THIS STILL NEEDS EXTENSIVE EDITING!

1 [soft chuckle] I need you at my place ASAP. Ah. You look as good in the daytime as you do at night. What’s up? Whew. Last night was amazing. [Andre chuckles] Bill, you home? Just beautiful. Oh! Sweetheart, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to scare you. No, i-it’s okay.

And I agree.

Mm. I get to call this elegant house

my home.

Mm-hmm. And this gorgeous, romantic, extremely hot man, my husband. You know, let’s have a party. I mean, look at this place. We have to show it off, like… But… nobody would come. They wouldn’t dare go against the Duprees. Yeah. That damn Dani. She’s danced through life because of her last name. And now, after actually firing a gun at our wedding, she gets off with barely a slap on the wrist. The good news is she’s done her absolute worst. You know, there’s nothing more that she or any of her family can do to hurt us now.

Yeah.

Right?

Yeah.

Mm… ♪ ♪

Hey, you.

Where have you been? I, uh, dropped off the dry cleaning, got the car washed. Kids? They’re still at school. They’re hanging out with their friends at the lacrosse game. It’s all on the calendar. Yeah, everything’s on the calendar… except for what matters. Clearly, we’ve progressed from the silent treatment of last night. I thought anything would be an improvement from that. But this? Not so much. I’ve got work to do. Hey, hold on. I need you to use your words and tell me why you stormed off this morning without saying goodbye. And why you haven’t answered a single one of my texts, okay? I didn’t know I was accountable to you for every action. It’s kind of in the fine print of the marriage license, Congressman. You’re accountable to me, and I’m accountable to you. And instead of shutting down, we are considerate of each other. You consider me? Really? Hey. Martin… …this is me considering you. Tell me what’s wrong. When were you gonna let me in on what you were planning?

I don’t– I wasn’t…

I heard. You had no problem with confiding in my mother last night. Oh. [sighs] That’s all you got? If you’re accountable to me and considerate of me… …why wouldn’t you tell me that you were thinking about going back to work as an investigative reporter? Oh, Ashley, not so fast. Our departmental rock star can’t leave for the day without giving you a little something-something. You’re kidding. I don’t need all this. Delivering a baby isn’t easy in the best of circumstances. Let alone in an elevator without any of the necessary equipment.

You can say that again.

I’m glad it wasn’t me. But you, Ashley, handled it with calm, skill and joy. And we wanted to honor that.

Aw…

[clears throat] Let the record show I taught this girl everything she knows. [laughter] Glad to have you on the team, Ashley. All I did was focus on helping that mother bring her baby safely into the world. That is one lucky baby girl. [laughs] Thank you. Daddy, no, you are not wearing that tired blue suit to Mom’s gala. I look fine in that suit. You will look old in that suit. TED: I thought you liked it. KAT: Only because you said you liked it. Well, your mother liked it. And she only said that because she knows you think it makes you look “fine.” Kat, are you telling me that the women in my life have been lying to me? Only because we love you. [laughs] So wear the black and make your ladies proud. What would I do without you? Be a lonely, sad, badly dressed old man. [mock groans] You are so lucky to have us. Oh, sorry. Dr. Richardson forgot a patient file and asked me to come get it. No problem, Eva. Have you met my daughter Kat? KAT: Oh, yes. Eva and I are practically BFFs. I came to pick up my things I left the other night. You should have called first.

Hmm?

They’re still in the wash. Oh, that’s a shame. They won’t smell like you. Let me be clear, Andre. What we shared the other night was wonderful. Mm-hmm. And it can never happen again.

You mean again, again?

I mean no kind of again. Mm. Okay, got it. No more. Never again. [chuckles] Nice pig. Where’d, uh… where’d you get it? I seem to have earned a fan page on Facebook for being a total badass. No leather. But how do you really feel about it? I like it.

Mm.

I spent so many years being the perfect lady on Bill’s arm. The new image suits the new me. Besides, Bill and that little witch deserved to have that sham of a wedding disrupted. Yeah, well, you certainly did that, Cowgirl Dani. And now I am putting away my six-shooter and moving on. I am officially leaving Bill and Faylee in my dust. Does that make me sound cold and heartless? Nah. You? The last thing I would ever call you is cold. All right, now go, Andre. My daughter’s coming over. Ah. Thanks for the explanation. I would hate to think that I was losing my touch. [chuckles] Later, Dani. Goodbye, Andre. [door closes] I got your message, Mom. What’s wrong now? If he has any questions, he can call me at home. Mm-hmm. I know. [chuckles] Okay. Yes. Thanks, Caroline. Thanks. She shouldn’t be bothering you on your honeymoon like that. Oh, it’s fine. And this case is really interesting. Yeah, babe, but that’s just because it’s relatively new to you, so… I think that it may be better that you leave now before you become disillusioned.

Are you firing me?

No. Never, babe. No, I just… I think it makes sense for you to resign. [scoffs] I’m not doing that, Bill. Baby, there is no need for you to continue working as a paralegal when there’s a busy social world ready to bow before the new Mrs. Bill Hamilton. But to quit my job? What is the issue? Well, Caroline and the rest of the staff are the only friends that I have here. And… plus, wouldn’t you miss seeing me at the office every day?

[chuckles]

Hmm? Believe me, baby, if I could spend every minute of every day in your arms, I’d be a very happy man. But I’m just thinking of you, that’s all. I think you should be a little more independent. Wouldn’t quitting my job make me more dependent? Mm. Maybe a little more pampered. Acceptance of this gift shall not be construed as an indication of intent for me to terminate my current employment.

[chuckles] Duly noted.

Okay. What’s the occasion? Just loving you. Well, that’s the gift, sweetheart. Nothing in this box can top that. Mm. Good.

A credit card.

Mm-hmm. And that card has no limit. It’s good everywhere, and you’ll never have to see a statement. That is real independence. Aw. I love you so much.

You better, baby.

Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you. You’re welcome. Ooh. I’m so sorry it’s taking me so long to clock out, babe, but I had to answer a couple patient calls, and I really want to get these handoff reports right. Take your time. I think I should send thank you notes to everybody for the gift basket and flowers. I mean, it’s too much. I was just doing my job. Andre was here, too. I’m sure the photographer was a lot of help. He really was. He has a good sense of humor.

And that kept mom-to-be calm.

[phone buzzes] Now, I just have to… [laughs] Andre found out that his aunt sent me flowers, and he gave me a daisy GIF…

Aw.

…to make sure he wasn’t left out. He spends, like, no money and gets a laugh. I drop serious cash, what do I get? You know, the best part of this whole thing is I made you proud. Always. No getting carried away at work. You’ll destroy my rep. Then let’s get out of here. Get busy in private. Okay, just a sec. Andre officially thanked, and now I just have to clock out. Please tell me you haven’t signed out yet. I was just about to, but… If you can hold off on that,

I could really use your help.

Sure. We are about to get slammed with new admissions, and the patient in 312 has been waiting hours for his discharge papers.

His doctor is…

I’ll handle it. And I’ll check in with you and see if you need any more help before we leave. Oh, that’d be great. Thanks, Ash. Sorry, Derek.

Derek…

I’ll hang out in the waiting room

until you’re done.

Thanks. Maybe text Naomi and Jacob. I feel like it’s been forever since we did one of our couples things.

All right, I’ll see if they’re free.

Great. So, Eva, how has it been working for my wife? Is there anything else that we can do to make your job easier here? Thanks, Ted, but I’m good. Working for Nicole is fun and kind of exciting. I’m sure it is. I mean, this is the first real job you’ve ever had, right?

Kat!

I checked out your social media, and all I could find were some pictures of you doing your friend’s hair. Oh, they’re clients, not friends. On a salon site where you worked for, like, a minute. Nothing else. Why is that? I apologize for my daughter. I did not raise her to grill anyone like this. It’s a simple question. What did Eva do for a living before Mom hired her? It’s okay, Ted. Kat doesn’t know me, and I get that she’s curious. The fact is, I’ve had a few side gigs, and I’ve always been good with hair, so it’s been an easy way for me to help my surrogate mom out with the bills. It’s been touch and go, financially, since her husband died. I think that is admirable, Eva. Now, can someone please tell me why my daughter is interrogating my assistant? I am asking questions you apparently didn’t bother to ask your new assistant about her background and experience. I can handle my own employees, Kat, thank you very much. I’m just trying to help. And I’ve got some bad news. I won’t be at your award ceremony. No, you have to be there. This is a major honor for your mother. I know, and I really am sorry, Mom. I would be there if I could, but I have got… this business thing out of town. If there are any last-minute details I can help with, though… We’ll figure it out. You and Eva. Got it. Oh, and I convinced Dad to ditch the blue suit. You’re welcome. I’m just glad you’re okay. You sounded strange

on the phone.

Well, hopefully I have left all strange behavior behind me. Then why the call? Is it about the video? Because I checked the stats and it seems to be finally running its course. Not entirely. Somebody made a creepy fan page? I don’t think it’s creepy. I think I look pretty damn good. Don’t you? This isn’t funny, Mom. If I hadn’t been recording… Hey, recording your life is part of the brand that we work so hard to create. There is no one here to blame but me. I acted a fool. Well, after the way Dad treated you… The most important thing is that we put your father and his child bride in our rearview. I can do that.

Can you?

Yes. Mom, if you keep letting them get to you, they win. We can’t have that. I am moving forward with the wonderful future that I planned for the two of us. The modeling world hasn’t seen half of what you’re capable of, but the two of us, working together, we will blow them away. Chelsea, from now on, you have all of me. Nicole, this tribute video, do you want me to make copies or distribute it to anyone? I think Andre has that covered. Oh, do you think we can get Andre to highlight that part where we were reminiscing

about when we first met?

Of course. We can take notes tonight and give them to Andre to edit. I can’t wait for the world to see you the way I always have. Working on your résumé? I’m putting the finishing touches on the constituent services article you asked me to draft for you. Oh. Forgot about that. Thanks. And thank you for giving me some time to cool down. I know you and I love you, Martin. And I was never gonna go back to work without talking to you first. So let’s talk. Okay. I hate it. Conversation over. Now who’s being selfish? I get to have a life, too. You don’t think being my husband and raising our kids is a life? Good to know. Do not even try that. I may not be a U.S. congressman or a member of the almighty Dupree family except by marriage, but it doesn’t mean that my needs and dreams are gonna be ignored by default. And I am not gonna put my life on hold just to avoid upsetting you. [door opens, closes] I promise. I’ll do better. Don’t make drunken promises, Rory. But when you sober up, try to remember there are people out here who will help you if you ask. And then? Ask. Take care of yourself, now. I didn’t realize I had an audience. Which makes you even more wonderful. That for me? Yeah, just trying to distract you from the fact that I’m interrupting you at your job. [Naomi clears throat] Something’s wrong. I work at a police station, Naomi.

Wrong is the norm.

No, no, no. Something’s wrong with you. Go ahead, start talking before I snatch that coffee back. I’m mad at myself for not doing anything to stop Dani at Bill and Hayley’s wedding. So that means your favorite cop is really bad at his job. [sighs] Let’s see. Okay. Oh… [sighs] Hey, cuz. Can’t talk long. I’m waiting for my date.

First date?

Skip the lecture. Tell me what you need. I need to vent after dealing with my mom and her little assistant. I’m picking up you don’t like the assistant. That’s because there is not a genuine bone in Eva’s fake ass and knockoff dress body. Uh-huh. Uh-huh what? You’re calling me a snob. Not out loud. I was thinking it real hard, though. Just because I don’t trust her and I’m sticking around to keep an eye on that sneaky little instigator does not mean… Oh. Gotta go. My date’s here. [sighs] Be careful, Chels. “Careful” is not in the plan for tonight. Okay. Thank you so much. EVA: Ashley. How are you doing? Hey, Eva. I’m good. You’ve been busy. That elevator baby is all anybody can talk about. Ah, I just did what anyone else would have done. Can I help you with something? Oh, I don’t know if you heard, but I’m filling in as Dr. Nicole Richardson’s assistant. ASHELY: I did hear. I’m glad we’ll sort of be working together. Right. I need to check on accessing files for a new admission. Oh, we just added it to the system. Eva, you should be good now. Oh, thanks. Naomi and Jacob are a go for drinks. Oh, I’m so glad they can make it. Night, Shanice. Thanks again for your help today. Anytime. You are going to enjoy working with Dr. Richardson. She’s the best.

Thanks. Bye.

Bye. Babe. Let’s go meet Ashley and Derek. I have to come back to work after, though. You know, I hate that you blame yourself for what happened at my dad’s wedding. Yeah, it was bugging me so much, I had to speak to my father about it. What did Elon say? That it wasn’t a dereliction of duty on my part, so… The chief of police should know.

[sighs]

You were being a good guy, like always, standing by your wife. You did it for me. Girl, I find it damn near impossible to say no to you.

[laughs]

You know that? The feeling is mutual. And now that Dad is married and Mom has thrown a public fit, the family drama is over and we can go back to normal.

Okay?

Okay.

Come on.

Yeah, let’s go. I’m serious. I’m literally the most boring person

on the planet.

Are you sure? There’s a lot of competition out there. I’ve got them all beat. I thought about lying to folks and telling them I’m a fighter pilot or an astronaut. Anything other than a tech nerd. Tech nerds are the new rock stars. You’re thinking about billionaire tech nerds. That’s the kind of guy that should be here with you. I mean, you’re a top model and a prominent social influencer, and yet you sit there. God, you’re gorgeous. Listening to me drone on. I am much too ordinary to be with someone like you. I think ordinary looks good on you. Guess it’s time to start being interesting. [chuckles] Let’s get this party started. Don’t worry. I’m unarmed. You don’t have to be carrying to be dangerous, Dani. And yet you let me in. Better for you to say what you came to say in here than on the doorstep. This is nice. Bill hired Glorietta Interiors, am I right? I’m sure you didn’t come here to judge my living room. Nervous, Hayley? If you try anything, Bill is right upstairs. Daddy to the rescue. We did think of you as a daughter at one point. Now I’m not here for Bill. I was, uh, talking to Chelsea, and I realized that if I am going to step into my future, I need to slam the door on my past. So I am here to have a long overdue conversation, woman to woman. I’ll settle for you. I will not allow you to abuse me in my own home. Oh, aren’t you special? Demanding that kind of courtesy after abusing my trust in my home?

We’ve already discussed–

Had this out? Not even close. It would be one thing if you were some girl I had never met. But you knew me, Hayley. Had my phone number in your phone and never hesitated to use it. I gotta give you your props, though. You never let on. You were sleeping with my husband and there wasn’t even a lift in your eyebrow to signal that change. You could have distanced yourself from me, stopped making yourself comfortable in my living room, but you never let your mask drop. You lied and kept on lying with every hug and every smile. Look, I never meant to do– Nobody cares what you meant. What matters is what you did. What you did to me? Bad. But what you did to my daughter? To Naomi? There is no measure for the depth of that betrayal. Do you have any idea how guilty she feels for befriending you, only to have you turn around and become her stepmother? Are you ashamed yet, Hayley? Because you should be. Why do you think I asked Bill to back off with you? I’m not proud of what I did. The thought of hurting you and Naomi really cut me deep inside– Spare me the crocodile tears. You had your eyes set on becoming Mrs. Bill Hamilton, and you didn’t care that the position was already taken. Look, I am sorry, Dani. Look, I said it before, and I hope you can hear it this time. I hear you. And you’ll be even sorrier. Are you threatening me? I’m informing you. The fairy tale never tells you how Prince Charming can become a real son of a bitch once that ring goes on your finger. I have wasted enough time on you and Bill, so I will keep my distance. And I suggest you do the same. That’s my best offer. Take it. Okay. Must have been my imagination, but I could have sworn I just heard Dani’s grating tone in here. No, she was just here. Wha… Baby, you should have called me. [sighs] Look, I think, in her own way, Dani came by to…. offer an olive branch. She said she needed to get some things off her chest so she could move on. Babe, no, okay? That– That’s her story for today, okay? And tomorrow, she’ll find another excuse to make our lives a living hell. Hayley, baby. Hey, look at me. Hey, listen. I need you to hear me well. Okay? You cannot trust Dani. [sighs]

Hi, guys.

Hey. Got your text. There’s a virgin mojito

and an NA beer headed this way.

Okay.

Thanks, man.

Yeah. So, tell us about your new job.

It’s great.

NAOMI: Yeah?

Okay. Wait. Is that Chelsea over there?

It is.

And who’s the guy? Probably some guy hitting on her, like always. Or is it the other way around this time? [laughter] Fascinating as your sister’s sex life always is, I’d much rather talk about the fascinating ladies at this table.

Yes.

Well, I heard somebody got flowers today, and it wasn’t me. [laughs] Derek gave them to me. Plus, she got a bouquet from all her friends at the hospital. Wow. You’re raking it in, Ash. Maybe I should deliver babies in an elevator more often.

[laughter]

Just say when. Hey, Andre. My partner in crime. More like birthing partner. Hey, sort of cousin. So Andre is my Uncle Ted’s nephew. You got all kinds of connections at the table. Are you busy? You want to join us?

I don’t want to intrude.

DEREK: No, you’re not. Any friend of my girlfriend is someone I’d like to know. Okay. Yeah. Get a chair. What are you doing here? Grabbing a drink? Eh, just around.

NAOMI: Just around?

In and out. You’re so mysterious. [laughter] I didn’t mean to sound insensitive or uncaring. You know I love you. Sometimes I wonder. Never doubt that. I couldn’t fathom what my life would be without you in it. And yes, I admit I don’t want you to go back to work. It’s true. But the traditional family optics of a stay-at-home parent, it’s what works best for the game plan. And you raising our kids projects stability in our lives. And me going back to work projects that there’s a whole country full of stable families with two working parents. We could be one of them. We can’t just look like an ordinary family. We have to be extraordinarily ordinary. For you to achieve your goals.

Our goals.

No, Martin. Your goals. Everything you just said is about you. Your goals, your needs. Most of all, your need for me to be a househusband for you to achieve them. And I’m sorry, but that’s not good enough for me. Not anymore. And what happens when you stumble across a big story? Somebody higher up the food chain will take it and run with it. No way. You might not remember what a great reporter you are, but I do. They will see how shrewd and astute you are, and you will become front and center. Martin, I need this.

What about what I need?

Look… …we don’t have to deal with this right now. Don’t handle me, Smitty. Listen to me. You will stick to the role you promised and let this job idea go. Am I understood? Yeah. You are. Well, if Dani’s willing to call a truce, I could have a real chance at being accepted here in Fairmont Crest. [sighs] Expecting peace from Dani is a fantasy that will never be realized, babe. Maybe it will. Please, give it a chance. Even if it doesn’t have a chance in hell of working? Bill… All right. [chuckles] I’ll do anything for you. [laughter] I was a wreck when I realized that baby was coming but the elevator wasn’t. Oh, man. But Ashley? Total pro. She didn’t even flinch.

JACOB: Wow.

She knew exactly what to do. Oh, I flinched. And I didn’t have a clue. No one could tell. [exhales] Sounds terrifying. I thought I was going to lose it. But Andre kept his cool. He said all the right things. He made sure we were both calm and focused. You saved the day. I’m sure you could have managed just fine without the towel.

[laughter]

JACOB: Okay. I still can’t get over the fact that Alex named her daughter after us.

Mm.

Wow.

DEREK: Whenever anyone asks where that child got the name “Ashley Andrea,” she’s gonna have hell of a story to tell.

NAOMI: Yeah.

Ashley and I and that baby will always have that link. Well, not much of one, right? It’s not like y’all are gonna be spending too much time together in the future. Well, I don’t know about that. Miracles always leave some kind of mark.

Okay.

Yeah, I guess.

Let’s-let’s drink to that.

Okay.

Cheers.

Cheers.

Cheers. This is my brilliant plastic surgeon husband, Dr. Ted… [door opens] This is getting to be a habit. Well, this has been fun, but I really should be going. So soon? Why? What did you have in mind? Um, my place. I thought you’d never ask. [pop song playing] Hey, honey. Chelsea, this is my wife, Allison. I’ve been dying to meet you. I don’t know. Something just came over me. Like, I-I can’t even remember how I did it. I think just– adrenaline just told me what to do.

It had to.

DEREK: That’s scary, right?

Yeah.

I got a thing, so… Oh, okay.

Thanks for joining us.

Yeah.

Hey, thanks for the drink.

Sure thing. We’ll do it again sometime.

Good to see you, Naomi.

Oh. Good night.

Thanks for making this happen tonight.

Wow. Well, see you soon.

Recap written by Michelle & Cheryl

At Nicole’s office, Eva looked through Nicole’s desk. Kat walked in and asked who she was. Eva said she was a friend of Mona’s. Kat told her she only got the job because of who she knew and not for her style. While they were talking, Kat continued to be rude to Eva. She let Eva know that she didn’t run her schedule and didn’t want her to worry about what she was going. Kat said her father was handling Laura’s care so she would be back soon. She warned Eva not to get too comfortable. When Eva wanted to start over, Kat wasn’t interested because her assignment wasn’t going to be long. She said it might be shorter than Eva thought. Jan, Leslie, and Mona talked about Laura’s situation. Mona said with the security footage near the area, the police should find out what happened soon. Jacob told Ted that the security footage wasn’t useful, so they hit a dead end. Eva was listening to them. Later on, Jacob met with his father Elon and talked about Laura’s case and how the security footage didn’t prove anything. While they were talking, Jacob said he felt like a failure of a police officer because he didn’t act sooner when Dani pulled the gun at the wedding. Elon tried to make him feel better about what he did. He wanted Jacob to let it go.

Eva ran into Ted and was upset about it. She thought that he acted like he was God’s gift to women. Eva told Leslie about seeing him and how she was tempted to expose him. Leslie wanted her to be patient because the time would come. It occurred to Eva that Leslie had a history of riding motorcycles and asked if she was responsible for what happened to Laura. Leslie was appalled that she would ask her that. She asked if Eva was getting cold feet. Eva said she wanted to do it and thought Ted would be getting what he had coming to him. At the club, Vanessa met with her husband Doug. He apologized to her for neglecting her. She suggested that he stop working so much and realized that she was lucky to have him. While they were talking, Diego interrupted them to ask her about one of her listings. He said his cousin wanted him to check out the place before he comes to town. While Diego and Vanessa were talking, Doug was thinking about gambling. One of his poker chips fell on the table. He was at a casino and was told he couldn’t borrow any more money until his tab is paid off. Doug called Randy who suggested that he talk to Vanessa about his problem. He said Vanessa’s family was rich, but Doug said he had too much pride to ask them for the money. Kat talked to Nicole about Eva. She told Nicole that they could have another Hayley on their hands. Since Nicole didn’t know that for a fact, she wanted Kat to be respectful. Kat said Eva was suspicious and would regret letting her in their lives. Later on, Nicole talked to Bradley. He opened up about feeling lost now that the kids were more independent. When Nicole suggested he join Martin’s political team, he said he was trying to be a reporter again. He said he didn’t tell Martin yet. Martin was listening to the conversation. He came over and said he was thinking about running for president.

THIS STILL NEEDS EXTENSIVE EDITING!

Eva?

EVA: Morning, Nicole. I’ve confirmed your appointments, sorted your emails and restocked the office supplies. Already? I haven’t even had my morning coffee. Well, Mona gave me the rundown on how you like things to run smoothly, as well as your coffee order. Sugar-free latte with oat milk, light foam and two pumps of caramel.

Let me put it in now.

That won’t be necessary. I’m headed to the country club to have breakfast with my family. Did I forget to text you that today would be a late start? I got the message, but I just wanted to come correct to make a good impression on my first day. Mission accomplished. Thanks. Although there were some emails I wasn’t too sure about. Before we get into that, we need to discuss the elephant in the room. And don’t act like you don’t know what I’m talking about. Laura’s surgery is confirmed for tomorrow. Poor thing’s gonna be laid up for a while. She was about to live her best life. Off to Hawaii on a romantic getaway with the boy toy, then bam! She gets run off the road, crashes her car and breaks her leg? Talk about the worst luck. [engine revving] [tires squealing] [car crashes] It’s nice how your bosses have stepped up for her. They did? How? Oh, Nicole and Ted are covering her medical expenses. Ted Richardson even admitted her to his private clinic. They’re treating Laura like family. Do the police have any leads on who did this to her? I haven’t heard of any, but I have been thinking. [Jan exclaims] All that late-night true crime binging paying off?

Girl, you know I’m obsessed.

[laughing]: Yeah. So, the crash happened near some warehouses. I bet the police pulled the security footage. So, it’s only a matter of time. Wow. [indistinct police radio chatter] ♪ ♪ [sighs] ♪ ♪ What elephant in the room? Eva, let’s not play dumb. By now, I know that you’ve seen the drama that unfolded at Bill and Hayley’s wedding fiasco. [sighs] Oh, you mean hashtag Shotgun Wedding? That’s the one. I was trying not to bring it up. My job is to make your day easier, not remind you of stress from your personal life.

I’m sure it’s been hard enough.

Oh, you don’t know the half. But my family will get through it. We always do. I’ve heard that about the Duprees. That when stuff happens, you guys circle the wagons. Must be nice. It’s nice when you can help, not so much when you can’t. Will your sister be okay? If she stays offline. I can only imagine the Internet’s having a field day. I’m not making excuses for Dani, and she has owned up to all of it. But she’s mourning the life she thought she’d have. The life she felt she deserved. Rejection like that can make anyone lash out. Oh, I get it. More than you know. Well, that was brutal. Someone brought the heat today. Whatever’s gotten into you, I love it. Well, then give yourself a pat on the back.

Me?

Left to my own devices, I avoid the gym like a plague. But you… [sighs] know which buttons to push. I guess I don’t want to let you down. Oh. My husband. [Vanessa chuckles] Leslie, I got to hand it to you. Suggesting that Eva fill in for Laura was a stroke of genius. Does that mean it’s going well? Still too early to tell. It’s just the first day. Don’t worry. Eva has what it takes to not only do the job but thrive at it. I spent some time schooling her. She soaked it up like a sponge. Filled up that little spiral notebook so fast, I thought smoke was gonna come off the pages. [laughter] Always a good sign. [laughter] Well, I did drill into her head that you only get one shot at a first impression. Sounds like it took root. Eva’s such a sweet girl, and she’s so eager to please. I remember her saying she was looking for a new direction in life. Well, if she keeps up this attitude, whichever path she chooses, sky’s the limit. That’s the master plan. ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ Who the hell are you? EVA: Oh, hi. We haven’t met yet. I’m Eva, Dr. Richardson’s new assistant. And you’re her daughter? A qualified assistant would already know that. Just wanted to make sure. Kat, right? I’ve heard all about you from Mona. She and my surrogate mom are friends. Surrogate mom? My biological mother died when I was little. Leslie took me in and raised me as her own. We recently moved here from Chicago and met Mona at church. Now it makes sense. Who you know got you this gig. Sure wasn’t your professional style. Your mother said the vibe was more of a relaxed work environment. Is that why you thought it was okay to go snooping through her desk? Snoop? No. I was just hunting for… a stapler. Oh, like that one over there? Ah, right in front of me. [laughs] I’m still getting familiar with the office. Shouldn’t you be meeting your mom at the country club? You’ve been here all of, what, ten minutes, and you’re already in my business? Well, I only mention it because Nicole said your family was having breakfast.

So I just thought that…

That’s your first mistake. So we’re clear, you handle my mom’s schedule, not mine. Do not concern yourself with what I’m doing or where I’m going. Fair enough. I didn’t mean to offend you. Also, my dad’s overseeing Laura’s care. She’ll be back on her feet soon enough, so don’t get comfortable. We all want Laura back, including me. Hey. [chuckles] This went south real fast. Let’s start over. No need. This is a short-term assignment. Maybe even shorter than you think. [birds chirping] Look at you, making time for breakfast. Feels like forever since we’ve done this. It has been a minute, hasn’t it? I hope you haven’t been feeling neglected. I get it. Emergencies happen. Although it does seem it’s been nonstop lately. It’s that time of year, post holidays, after people overindulge. Plus the common cold combined with the seasonal flu. I guess cardiac surgeons will always be in high demand. But can’t you refer some cases out before you have a heart attack? I know I need to set boundaries. It’s just hard turning people away that’s going through it. They come to me scared, confused, holding on to hope. Makes me think how I would want my loved one’s doctor fighting for my family with everything they’ve got. [sighs] Your patients are lucky to have you. I am, too. So… [laughter]

Hi.

Hello. Getting slow in your old age.

Hey, cut it out.

I said what I said. I guess we could have squeezed in a few more baskets since the family hasn’t arrived yet. You’re only saying that because I was beating you for once. Hey, don’t get cocky. I already told you, I wasn’t properly stretched.

Sure.

[phone vibrating] Congressman Richardson. No, I won’t comment on the wedding. But if you would like to hear the proposed changes to the national defense bill my subcommittee dr– I didn’t think so. I love my aunt, and I respect her privacy. Quote that. No wonder they say real journalism is dead. The press isn’t gonna let up. I wouldn’t. You were a serious reporter who covered issues that mattered. Not like these vultures, just looking for clickbait. I also knew not to take no for an answer. This is why I wait it out. This is the United States of Amnesia. Next week, another scandal pops up, and Aunt Dani’s drama is ancient history, never to be unearthed again. What did you say your name was again? This is it, honey. Ooh, it’s the day I-I’ve dreamed about. [laughs] You are finally gonna be where you should’ve been all along. In your father’s house. I never met a man like him before. And he never loved a girl like me. I’m sorry for what he did to you, Mama. To us. To us. I-I will pass that along. I’m sorry to barge in. I’m looking for Dr. Richardson. I’m the other Dr. Richardson, her husband Ted. Oh, I know who you are. You must be the new assistant that’s stepping in for Laura.

Yes.

And your name? Oh, right. Sorry. It’s Eva. Eva Thomas. Pleasure to meet you, Eva. We’re happy that you’re on board. Happy that you’re here. [quiet chatter] Sorry to intrude. You’re always welcome at our table.

Isn’t that right, Doug?

Oh, yeah.

How’s it going, Diego?

Good, thanks. I just heard from my cousin who’s moving into the area. He has deep pockets, and he saw this listing online that he’s crazy about. It’s actually one of yours. Delightful. Which one? Constitution Avenue. Grand entrance, killer view to the Capitol. The Coleman Estate. And it is available immediately. When will your cousin be in town? We can arrange a viewing. Uh, he was hoping that I could take a first look. VANESSA: Of course. I can show you the property after breakfast. You could even take some videos to give your cousin a virtual tour. Thank you, Ms. McBride. You’re the best. I’ll swing by in a few. Doctor. [laughing] Oh. Oh. Oh, that’s bad. [laughing] Are you all watching that Bill and Hayley wedding mess again? You could probably lip-synch the whole thing by now. Well, I can’t get over the look on Bill’s face. I mean, he actually thought he could humiliate his ex and get away with it. I’m with you. That man had it coming. Flaunting his infidelity like that. Having a wedding at the country club. Buying his mistress-now-wife a house in the neighborhood. Where all their old friends would see them. The audacity. Lady Karma is patient, but when she strikes… Mm. Too bad Dani’s aim wasn’t as patient. I’m almost sorry she missed.

Oh.

[Jan laughing] Oh, come on, Mona. You have to admit he had it coming. I don’t find it funny. Nicole is my girl, and this mess is wearing her and the whole Dupree family down. How would you feel if your family’s dirty laundry was exposed for the whole world to kee-kee at? [smacks lips] She makes a point. They must be mortified. Good thing they have a shrink in the family. And it’s weighing on Nicole. She’s the one holding everybody down. One of these days, it’s gonna be too much for her. There you are. Sorry I’m late. Is your brother here yet? Martin and Smitty are already inside. But before you go in, we need to talk. Of course, sweetheart. What’s on your mind? Mom, I met your new assistant. Great. I was hoping you and Eva would hit it off. You have so much in common. You’re joking. So it’s like that? Regardless of what you may think of Eva, she is already doing a fantastic job.

I think you can do better.

Why do you say that? Because I caught her snooping around your desk. She is still getting acquainted with the office. And she seems mad shady. You are not always a beacon of sunshine yourself, young lady. Are you sure you just didn’t make her nervous? Can you just trust me on this? My reads on people are usually spot-on. Let me help you with this. I use this app to staff Dad’s office. Give me till the end of the hour, and I will have a hundred resumes with more relevant experience than hairstyling. And given her IG, she’s not even good at that. Katherine Richardson, I raised you better than to be this judgmental. I’m being cautious. You would think this family would’ve learned their lesson after what Hayley put us through. What are you saying, Kat? That I didn’t do my due diligence? This might surprise you, but I did more than scan a few posts and make a silly assessment on her clothes. I interviewed Eva myself, checked her references, one of which is a close friend I trust. Now, are there any other of my employees you would like to replace, or can we finally have breakfast? I was hoping to catch my wife so we could drive to the country club together, but my morning ran long, and it seems like I just missed her. Seems like you got a good handle on things here. I’m doing my best, Dr. Richardson.

[phone vibrates]

Uh, call me Ted. I’m sure your best is fantastic. Nicole was looking for someone to step right in, and you’re making my wife’s life a whole lot easier. You don’t have to say that. Sure I do. My job is to make Nicole’s life happy, and you’re helping me do so. So, keep up the good work.

Hey, what’s up?

I was hoping you had a minute to talk about Laura’s hit-and-run. I’ll give you some privacy. Excuse me. TED: So, what did you find out? I’ve given Laura this update as well. We pulled the security footage from near the crash site, but it wasn’t much help. The motorcycle that caused it was a popular model. Can’t catch every crotch rocket in D.C., huh? What about the license plate? Removed. And the driver’s face was obscured by a helmet. I made a few calls, got our best guys to enhance it, but they couldn’t do anything with the video. TED: No witnesses have come forward? None. And no evidence at the scene either. Just some skid marks from Laura’s car. Look, Ted, I hate to say it, but we’ve hit a dead end. Look at our Deanna looking like Ms. Collegiate on the quad. She’s so bundled up with all those hats and scarves,

you can barely see her face.

[laughing] She is still adorable. Oh, is that the time? I got to bounce before the hospital starts paging.

A poker chip?

Oh, must be from the charity casino night here at the country club.

I got it.

Okay. All right. I love you.

Doug.

Ah, Ted.

Catch you on the flip?

Yes. [quiet chatter] I ordered your usual. Should be out any sec. Good looking from my good-looking. Any word from Dani? Actually, I was just telling the kids she sounded okay on the phone. Well, okay for Dani. Her friend Pamela is treating her to a spa day. Which is a good move. It gives her a chance to chill out and keeps her out of the public eye. That’s Martin-speak for the less attention she gets, the better his poll numbers. Well, you better brace for impact, bro. That video made The Shade Room, The Breakfast Cluband TMZ. And it’s still trending with no signs of slowing down. We may need to hook Aunt Dani up with a permanent membership to that spa. Let’s not anticipate the worst. This could all blow over. I wouldn’t count on it. Your perspective is all screwed up from your time in Congress. For them, scandal is just another word for Tuesday. [laughter] This is a small community with a long memory. People still come for me for all the dumb stuff I did back in the day. You’re too young for “back in the day.” What are we talking about, sis? Middle school. [laughter] How are your folks holding up? Must be rough. Vernon and Anita have always been grace under pressure. Yeah, but this is different. Dani’s pain cuts Mother and Daddy deep. Your babies are always your babies, no matter how grown they get. [sighs] I rushed over as soon as I saw your text.

Why aren’t you at your new job?

I’m running errands for Nicole. She won’t expect me back for a while. Okay. So what happened? It’s nothing bad. Everything is fine. Better than fine, actually. Nicole likes me so much, you could be looking at her new employee of the month. Okay, well, if everything’s fine, then why did you need to see me? Mama, I met him. I met my father. Lord have mercy. Spill it. Spill it all.

Every last drop.

Okay, okay. Well, he strolled in looking for Nicole, but she was out. So he introduced himself to me. He shook my hand like I was any other employee. I mean, that’s it, really. Sounds like he didn’t have time for a proper meet. Oh, I hope you’re not too disappointed, honey. No, well, we actually got interrupted. Well, he probably thought I was intimidated or whatever by him, anyway. Mom, I was so shook, I could barely string two words together. Who cares what he thought? What’d you think of him? Well, I can see now how someone as innocent as you were could have fallen for him. That man thinks he’s God’s gift to Black women everywhere. Hmm. But I knew his good guy routine was all cap.

Hmm.

Smoke and mirrors, Ma. It means he’s faker than knockoff Gucci. He talked about “Nicole this” and “Nicole that” and how he just wanted to make her happy. Yeah, there’s some truth to that. He dropped everything for Nicole. He was smiling in my face, laying it on thick, thinking I was gonna fall for his game like everyone else. Good thing you didn’t. I’m his daughter, and not a flicker of recognition. And why would there be, huh? Since he walked away from us and never looked back. All I could think about was how he did you dirty. And how scared you must have been to face the world as a single mom. Sounds like you handled yourself very well. [sighs] My heart was beating so loud, I was worried he could hear it. I should’ve put him on blast right then and there. Soon enough, baby girl. Soon enough. Our day is just around the corner.

Pops.

Good to see you, son. [sighs] I appreciate you making time for some coffee. I know you got a million things on your plate. No sweat at all. I’m always looking for a good excuse to escape headquarters. Rather be out here with the rank and file, you know? Especially when it’s with you or your brother. Things to think about before accepting the promotion to chief of police. Who knew that high-ranking title came with a ball and chain? Yeah, I didn’t have much of an option. It was either that ball and chain or retire and be one to your mother. [laughs] So how’s your day? Man. I just had to break it to Ted Richardson that the security footage of the car crash is damn near useless. We may never ID the biker who ran Laura off the road. Yeah, the Richardsons are not used to hearing no. He didn’t come at you sideways, now, did he? Nah. Ted knew it was a long shot. [sighs] Something’s eating at you. Come on, Pops. You know exactly what’s wrong. [sighs] I was at the wedding when Dani pulled her weapon, and I didn’t stop or arrest her. I had a duty to act, and I neglected it. [sighs] I know I let you down. I’m all in. Show me the money. Come on. Come… It’s all good. It’s all good. W-We still in this. We still in this. [sighs] I wish I’d known about Dani’s spa day. I would’ve cleared my work schedule to keep her company. Aren’t you generous? It’s a sacrifice I’d be willing to make. Got to show solidarity with my girl. Jokes aside, I appreciate the neighborhood standing behind Dani, even when my sister doesn’t make it easy. You can always count on me. I’d better get going. I have a listing to show. Uh, I should, too. Where are Martin and Smitty? In the lobby, schmoozing with one of Martin’s donors. Are you heading to the hospital? I can meet you there and show you the research I did on that laser equipment you mentioned. That’ll work. See you later. At least Dad trusts my instincts. Kat, I do not doubt your business acumen for a second. You have done wonders for your dad’s private practice. Then why won’t you listen to me about Eva? Profit margins are one thing. Interpersonal relationships are another. When it comes to people, you have a blind spot. And I think you have a blind spot when it comes to Eva. Come on, Mom. Tell me you didn’t do a double take when you saw Eva’s tacky boots. You’re a psychiatrist. Your assistant should be professional and pulled together like Laura. Or casual and relatable like Eva. She was rude to me. Were you rude first? Be honest. You should listen to me, Mom. I have a sixth sense about these things, and that girl is sus. You’re gonna regret ever bringing her into our lives. I met another member of that family today. The congressman? Martin? I thought you were being bitter when you called Kat a spoiled princess, but now that I’ve seen her for myself, she’s actually worse. That young woman reeks of arrogance. She has a stank attitude, too. Took one look at me and decided I was worth less than the dirt on the bottom of her stiletto heel. I know the feeling. She basically told me to pack my desk and dropped hints about me getting fired. Okay, here’s how you handle that one. Stay quiet, stand tall and picture the look on her face when she realizes that she’s not Daddy’s only daughter. I hope her Louboutins are comfortable, because she’s about to fall hard off that pedestal. [chuckles] Well, her brother isn’t as bad. Well, unfortunately, he wasn’t there. Neither was his husband. But Naomi’s husband Jacob did drop by to talk to Ted about some police business. Ah, well, they’re probably investigating Dani going gun crazy at the country club. Mm-mm. That’s what I thought, too. He’s actually investigating Laura’s car crash. I think you’re being too hard on yourself. Come on, Pops. I don’t need you making excuses for me. When have I ever done that? I hear you, son. You feel like you dropped the ball, but there’s more than one kind of duty.

What do you mean?

You’re a family man now. You have a responsibility to your wife as well as the badge. Yeah, but to just ignore a crime… You can’t always rush in half-cocked, son. In the heat of the moment, a good cop trusts his gut. And you may not always get it right, but in this case, I think you did just fine. Fine? People could have gotten hurt because I hesitated. But they didn’t. And Dani turned herself in. Yeah, I didn’t think she was gonna do that. Yeah, but you know the Duprees. They handle their business and weren’t about to let this mess go on and have their name drug through the mud. And they didn’t. It all worked out fine. So you think I’m torturing myself for no good reason. Take a page from The Beatles, son. Let it be. [sighs] Dr. McBride, has Lady Luck decided to find you yet? On her way. If only the house could spot me a little something to win what I lost, I can have it back to you tonight. Maybe tomorrow at the latest. Unfortunately, that doesn’t follow company policy. Got to clear the tab before we can extend any more credit. How about I get you a suite for later? Nah, that’s okay. I appreciate you, though. Holler at me if you need anything else. [line ringing] Hey, listen, man, I need to see you. You mind stopping by? SMITTY: Hey. If you’re having me time, I can go listen to Martin

work over a donor.

Boy, sit. I’ve been meaning to check up on my favorite son-in-law, anyway.

[sighs]

How’s your world these days? Uh, good. Tyrell and Samantha are, you know, teenagers. So they’re doing their own thing. Not interested in sharing every detail of their day

with Daddy anymore?

No. They’re growing up. Martin and I aren’t empty nesters yet, but… [sighs] it’s close. And I’m not gonna lie, I’m already starting to feel kind of lost. It happens to the best of us. All the time I spent driving them around and making their lunches and reading them bedtime stories. It does seem like yesterday. Well, now I have hours to myself, but for what? I mean, there are only so many political podcasts I can listen to before I feel like the world’s about to implode. That is why they keep the news running 24/7.

It’s meant to draw in worriers like you.

Yeah. Have you thought about channeling that energy into something positive? I am on three parent committees, Nicole. I mean something positive for you, not your children. You have an activist spirit. You want to do good. Have you considered joining Martin’s team? You mean having my husband as my boss? [laughs] Okay, when you say it like that, it definitely sounds like a recipe for disaster. You know, I did have a thought about getting back into reporting. There’s nothing like the rush of being on the scent of a big story.

That sounds promising.

We’ll see. I did reach out to some former colleagues, just put out some feelers, just to gauge the level of interest. So this is more than just a thought. How does Martin feel about it? I haven’t told him yet. If what Mona told me was right

and Laura’s accident wasn’t an accident…

Okay, listen. I know Mona loves her tea, but that doesn’t make any sense. Look, maybe the driver was drunk or showing off, but intentional? The police have it on camera, but the motorcycle didn’t have any plates. Which means whoever did it wanted to make sure they couldn’t be tracked. What is the world coming to? I can’t see how anyone would want to hurt an innocuous girl like that. Wonder if Jacob will be able to find the driver despite the missing license plate. I doubt it. He has nothing to go on. It’s like he’s chasing a ghost. That just burns my grits. Huh. I pray they get that culprit. What’s wrong? You look troubled. I’m sorry, but I just… I can’t shake this feeling of guilt. Honey, you are not the one that ran Laura off the road. No, but I’m benefiting from it. I mean, here I am, sliding into her job, which strangely fits perfectly into our plans. Meanwhile, Laura is laid up in the hospital. Yeah, well, people are blessed with good fortune every day. All right? So there’s no reason for you to blame yourself for an opportunity that fell into your lap. But did it? I know it’s crazy for me to go there, but I just keep thinking about how you’ve rented bikes before when you got the urge to ride. I did, but what in the world are you… Just help me get this out of my head, Mama. Tell me you had nothing to do with that crash. Oh, thank God you’re here. Yo, my man. This high-roller table is calling my name, but the casino won’t lend me another dime. Is that why you pulled me away from my breakfast rib eye? What do you expect me to do about it? You work for the owner. Can’t you vouch for a brother? [sighs] How deep are you in, man? Seriously, Doug, do I look like your fairy godmother? I swear on my mama, I’m good for it. Don’t you dare bring your mama into this. She would snatch your behind if she heard. Come on, Randy. I’m desperate here. See, and that right there is the problem. You and me, we go back to the sandbox, and you know I would take a bullet for you, but I won’t help you dig your own grave. And that’s damn well what’s gonna happen if we start throwing my boss’s good money over bad. Don’t you got a-a rainy day stash somewhere? Even if I did, I wouldn’t throw it down your bottomless pit. What about your wife? Isn’t Vanessa’s family loaded? Out of the question. So is my boss. Joey’s not what you would call a sympathetic guy, and I want to keep both my kneecaps. So do you. I guess I’m S.O.L. [sighs] Not if you swallow your pride. Go to Vanessa. “For richer or for poorer,” remember? [sighs] Ready to go whenever you are. I’m free right now. Let’s get the party started. Just wait until you see the property. It has an elegant staircase, vaulted ceiling, large windows… Uh, that’s not the type of party I’m talking about. What do you think you’re doing? I’m giving you what you want. About damn time. [Vanessa panting] We will have to finish our chat later. Oh, um, it’s the committee meeting for the annual teachers’ appreciation gala. Don’t have too much fun. Bye. I actually should be getting back myself. Um, actually, Mom, would you mind staying? I have something I want to discuss. I hope it isn’t bad news. God knows we’ve had enough of that as of lately. Then what’s the good news? I’ve been thinking about the next step of my career. Oh, I don’t know how helpful I could be with that. Usually when it comes to politics, you consult with your grandfather. I’m planning to speak to Granddad, too, but it just feels like you need to be the first one to know. You running for reelection to Congress wouldn’t be a surprise. No, I haven’t made a commitment yet, but I’m considering running… for president. Oh, my God. Martin, that is wonderful! [laughs] How could you even let that thought cross your mind?

I know it sounds crazy.

It sounds ridiculous! Your whole plan was for me to get a job with the Richardsons. At the club or the clinic or even with Ashley at the hospital, once we got to know her. And maybe that plan went out the window when the opportunity with Laura popped up.

Oh, my…

So what’d you do?

Hire a hit man just to get me closer to the Duprees?

What? That is absurd! How could you even say something like that? How could you even think I would consider doing something like that? After all we have been through, even after… after all this time, you really think your mother is capable of such a heinous crime? Oh, my… No, no, no. Of course not. Look, look, look, I’m sorry, okay? I-I just couldn’t get it out of my head, and I had to ask to be sure. Are you getting cold feet? Is that what this is about? Because if it is, I already told you, and I meant when I said you don’t have to go through with this. No, no. I said I’m ten toes down, and that’s still the case. After all these years, Dr. Ted Richardson is finally gonna have to face up to what he did. We’re so close. But, baby, you got to play it cool.

Get them to trust me.

Yeah, exactly. Lower their guard, and then I will make sure that their world comes crashing down all around them. And then you will step in, and you will take what is rightfully yours all along. My name and my birthright. That’s right.

THIS STILL NEEDS SOME EDITING!

You want to go to a press conference on our wedding night? Darling, it’s not that I want to go. I– look, I cannot let Vernon Dupree spin a tale for the press that he all but owns. We’re married now. Who cares what Dani did? Let it go. Dani pulled a gun on us at our wedding, tried to humiliate us by making us bow before her. If she had snapped any further, we, we could’ve died. But we didn’t. They’re gonna spread around a bunch of cash and call in some favors to make sure she gets off. So what, Bill? Don’t you want to see them pay? I want to get under the covers with my new husband and have the honeymoon that he promised me. But we will have our honeymoon, baby, okay, I promise, but Dani robbed you of the wedding you dreamed of. Okay? It’s time for payback. I got to go. Not a chance, Bill Hamilton. United front, everyone. I’ll do all the talking. Naomi, where is Jacob? Uh, he got called into work. Sorry, Granddad. It’s a shame. A police officer in our ranks would speak volumes. I know, but Jacob and I just thought… It’s all right, sweetheart. With all of you behind me, the message is clear. The Duprees continue to be leaders in the community and above reproach. Not to throw cold water on your strategy, Granddad, but that’s a tough sell. Why? My congressional staff has clogged my inbox. With what? Apparently, clips from the live stream have gone viral on every platform. We caught that, too, with some shade and dragging mixed in. My grandparents Facebook group is shocked that a Dupree would cause such a scene, at a wedding no less. On Insta alone, over three million views. All right, everyone, devices away. I called this press conference to shut down all this chatter, not engage in it. Daddy, I can talk about what Dani did from a psychological perspective. I don’t want anyone calling my daughter crazy. That’s why I can help. I can tell the press it’s possible that a mentally healthy person can have a temporary break. I’m not sure how helpful that would be. Don’t you think me being a psychiatrist makes me the most credible messenger? Not only that, Dani’s my sister. My experiences with her makes it personal. When Dani messes up, I clean up. That’s our eternal dance, Daddy. Could be right. I’m gonna go let ’em in. Like mother, like daughter. Like I don’t already feel bad enough. How many times do I have to say it? I’m sorry I live streamed it, okay?

I didn’t mean to, but…

Okay. Please squabble later, you two. The press has arrived. Game faces, everyone. Thank you for coming out on such short notice. I realize many of you had kicked off your shoes and, uh, settled in for the evening. Sir, if I could just ask you a few quick questions… Is that Mrs. Cantor? Oh, so glad you came out. How’s the new baby? She is fine, but what I really want to know about… I’ll let you get right back to her. There’s been a lot of speculation about recent events concerning my family. Um, I’d like to give an accurate picture of what transpired here at this country club earlier today. The video is pretty clear, is it not? During the wedding of Bill Hamilton and Hayley Lawson, a gun belonging to my daughter Danielle inadvertently discharged. Not a crime, just an unfortunate accident in which no one was hurt. So if that’s the case, then why is she not here right now? I am here. I’m just running a little late. There is no way in the world that I would miss this press conference. You all deserve the truth. Oh, my first week nursing, and I deliver a baby in an elevator. I don’t even know how to process that.

It’s amazing.

Yeah, and instead of me actually being on the outside watching, taking quick pics, it was next-level real seeing everything. But you were so together, I would have thought you delivered babies on the regular. Nah, I was just following your lead, Ashley.

That new mom…

Her name is Alix. Yeah, Alix– she thought you’d done it a million times, and I was not about to give her a tip that I was shook. Okay, but don’t sell yourself short, Andre. The way you calmed me down when I was freaking out, I so needed that. And he never led onto Alix that it was my first week nursing or I never delivered a baby on my own. You were a great partner. As you can all see, my daughter Dani is here and just fine. This is lying low? What are you doing? Isn’t this presser about me?

Yes, but Daddy…

Well, then it would be suspicious if I weren’t here. You’re not the only one who can help this family. Dani, tell us why you’d bring a gun to a wedding. Our family’s high profile and our political activism makes us targets. We’ve had numerous death threats over the years. Danielle’s gun is legally registered and she has a concealed carry permit. We’ve all seen the footage. It’s very evident that your daughter intentionally pulled a gun on her ex-husband and his new wife. So how about you stop spinning the truth just to protect your family? I’ve been in those situations. They’re intense. Looks to me like you were both calm under pressure. Oh, honey, you have that so wrong.

Oh, man.

News flash. Is it Alix and the baby? What’s wrong? Nothing. The doctor said Alix is doing just great. And the baby? Little Ashley Andrea is doing perfect. Ashley Andrea? Aw. How cool is that?

Congratulations, namesake.

Same back at you. I love that she named the baby after you two. She’s always going to remember who helped deliver her precious little bundle of joy. Isn’t that wonderful? Okay. You do remember you married an attorney, right?

Yes.

Okay, so what do you think happens

if I don’t show up in court?

The opposing side wins. Yes, without so much as a blink from the judge. Okay, well, this isn’t a lawsuit. I’m your wife, not a client. I don’t care if that self-righteous family comes up with some ridiculous explanation for what happened. You and I know the truth. That’s enough. Not for me, it’s not. And it shouldn’t be for you either, Hayley. Look, if Vernon can blame me for what his daughter did and the press buys it, that directly affects my practice, my ability to land clients, provide for my wife. It affects how judges and juries see me. Oh, you mean your reputation? Yes, my reputation matters. And so does yours, by the way. I’m not that shallow. Okay, okay, hey, wait, wait, hey, hey, hey. That’s, that’s one of the many reasons I love you, baby. Okay? But I won’t have you labeled a home-wrecker when it was– it’s been Dani who’s been a one-woman wrecking ball ever since you and I fell in love. That’s why I need to go to this press conference. And I’m asking you not to. Look, I just married you, Bill. I know you love me, okay, and that’s part of why you need to confront them. But what about how I feel, huh? What does it say to our commitment if you will leave me on our wedding night to do damage control because of your ex? Please. Don’t leave me here alone. There is no spin. Yes, Dani deliberately took out a gun at a public gathering, an admitted lapse in judgment. Yes, someone could have been hurt. So, you’re saying she wasn’t attempting to shoot her ex-husband or the person that he left her for? It’s a ridiculous question. Now, Dani had no desire to shoot anyone. Why point the gun at the bride and groom, then? [scoffs] You all seem to have memorized the video frame by frame, so surely you must have noticed Dani shift the gun away from Bill and Hayley before firing. Yes, my daughter acknowledges her mistake despite being under horrific emotional strain. Dani, did you plan to kill them? That is preposterous, and before you make any more outrageous accusations against my daughter, there’s a few things I need you to know. There is a proper context through which to view this video. You all know our family has always remained private and circumspect, which is why the press never caught the slightest hint of the hell Bill Hamilton and Hayley Lawson put Danielle through. Exactly. Yep. Bill gaslit my daughter. He had an affair with Hayley right under her nose and then called her paranoid when she suspected. And Hayley embarked on a mission to become my granddaughter Naomi’s best friend and then proceeded to use that friendship to insinuate herself into her best friend’s father’s bed. She is hardly an innocent victim. Danielle crossed the line– we acknowledge that she did– but it was Bill Hamilton who pushed her over it. And if there are any consequences to be faced… So, what do you mean by consequences? That will be all. No more questions. I’d like to answer that.

Shanice: You go, girl. [Ashley chuckles] I need to go see Alix and thank her. I’ll go with you. After all, her name is Ashley Andrea. You want to come with us?

Shanice: I-I think maybe you should hold off for a little bit. The doctor just left, and Mama, Daddy, and baby are just settling in for a nap. Well, I should at least send Alix flowers or something. I mean, how do you thank somebody for something this huge? It’s a big deal. And you guys earned it. Yeah, I-I’ve never had somebody named after me before. Hope she’s not doomed to pick up my bad habits.

Hmm, and what are those again?

ASHLEY: It doesn’t matter. Whatever bad habits you have, you’re also this major photographer and somebody who doesn’t melt down in an emergency. Be cool for her to inherit all that. Listen to Ashley, man. You’re all right. Yeah, but compared to you, I’m a slouch. You fight fires, I take pics. You tackle emergencies every day. It makes my gig seem trifling. How about we say this? You are both pretty fine men with awesome qualities and one pretty lucky nurse. I am lucky. And exhausted. I should get you out of here. This first. WOMAN [over P.A.]: Nurse to the fifth floor lab. I would be a coward if I let my parents take the blame for what I did. I can’t. No, no, today I blazed past even my own guardrails, and I want to apologize. First to the staff, who must have been terrified when they saw that gun. I am so sorry. And to my family, who doesn’t deserve the shame that I heaped on them. Mom, Dad. I know I can’t apologize enough. You are the best parents. You’ve given me the moon since I knew how to point to it, and disappointing you is the worst punishment ever. No excuses. But I will admit… …this is a very low point in my life. And I hate that my daughter is blaming herself for it. Chelsea, baby, come here. You didn’t do anything wrong. There is no way you could have known what would happen.

Bill: Aw. I’m all choked up. Still in her wedding gown? Probably your dad’s idea. Uncle Bill– or used-to-be uncle– all about the optics. Beautifully played, Duprees, as always, but I’d like to add a little testimony of my own.

Just wait here, sweetheart.

Bill is about to ruin this, after Daddy orchestrated this presser beautifully. There’s not much we can do now. Seems we arrived just in the nick of time. And your spiel was very informative, by the way. It was news to me that our wedding was broadcast all over social media. And I’m pretty sure that your fun little live stream could be evidence of quite a few unlawful behaviors– disorderly conduct, making a terrorist threat, menacing, first-degree assault, discharging a firearm, reckless endangerment of the greater public. Shall I go on? My ex-wife is right about one thing, though. This is not my daughter’s fault. Chelsea, baby, you don’t have to feel one iota of guilt because I’m sure your mother pressured you to record the moment in order to humiliate me. She didn’t. Mom didn’t have anything to… Be that as it may… sadly, in spite of my ex-wife’s sob story, which makes her erratic and insane behavior sound like a one-off, this is not an isolated incident. Dani has been harassing Hayley and me for days now. She physically assaulted Hayley in front of witnesses, disfiguring her face right before our wedding. I should have had Dani arrested the moment I saw Hayley’s injuries, but Dani is the mother of my two children Naomi and Chelsea, and I wanted to respect them, respect the past that we all had together, but with that being said, I have run out of patience. Now let me be clear– this is not about me. I can handle whatever Dani Dupree dishes out. But I will not sit idly by while she bullies my wife. [Shanice clears throat] I would say “Get a room,” but all the ones here are for sick people, and you two are clearly very healthy. I’m so sorry. That was so unprofessional. I’m not gonna hold it against you since you delivered your first baby in an elevator, stuck, but don’t think every day’s gonna be that exciting. Some days you’ll deliver babies without being on an elevator with a world-class photographer. And I doubt you’ll have much reason to stop by the hospital. Well, actually, I am overdue for a checkup, so… Oh, please. Don’t act like you’re not plugged in around here. His aunt, Dr. Nicole Richardson, is on staff as a psychiatrist here, and his uncle, the renowned plastic surgeon Dr. Ted Richardson, works out of here, too, when he’s not at his ultrachic, private, exclusive practice. What? It pays to be informed. ANDRE: Yes, it does, Shanice, and, uh, thank you for reminding me that I have quite a few reasons to drop by more often.

Mm-hmm.

Mm-hmm. Oh, add these extra hours you worked before you leave. Yeah. Well, uh, I’m going to take a hike.

All right.

Thank you again, Andre. Tonight was unforgettable. Yeah. See you.

[reporters clamoring]

Mr. Hamilton… why here on your wedding night? I allowed you to grandstand at my gathering, but now it’s time for you to back off. REPORTER: You have gone viral. Your family is a viral sensation. REPORTER 2: How do you care about how this makes you look? REPORTER 1: Your ex shot someone? Should she go to jail? This press conference is over. Thank you, as always, for the courtesy you extend my family and allowing us to set the record straight. That was a trip. Yeah. What’s on your mind? Well, while you were playing dutiful grandson and I was playing dutiful spouse to said grandson, I kept thinking. About what? The conversation back at Vernon and Anita’s. It was weird. Why? Because when you said that you understood how rage could explode into acting out… Yeah? Well, your grandparents– they looked at each other like they were in some secret society or something. That just happens when you’ve been married for so long. You and I do the same thing. I guess. I know you two think I screwed up royally by showing up at this press conference. We think no such thing. Your face says otherwise.

It went perfectly fine.

Until Bill crashed it. I know I keep letting these things get out of hand, but I meant what I said about taking responsibility. Daddy… I want you to call the police. And is that everything?

Nicole: My mother made a voluntary statement. Now, if you’re planning on taking her in, you better have probable cause for an arrest since you have no warrant. You are her daughter. And an attorney-at-law. Officer Jenkins, is it? Yes. I really admire your professionalism here. I’ll be playing golf with the chief of police tomorrow. You know Chief Elon Hawthorne? We’re close friends, even have family ties. I’ll be sure to tell him all about how we were treated by the police this evening. Doesn’t sound like there’s anything here that’s chargeable. Uh, thank you for speaking with me. I’ll just head back to the station and write up the incident report, sir. Thank you. Good night. [sighs] They’re letting her off the hook. Thanks, Sissy. It’s always great having you at my back. I am glad this went your way. But, Dani, I think you should talk to somebody. Somebody professional, not in this family, objective. So I can have all my business smeared across social media? I can recommend somebody discreet. This whole family thinks I’m around the bend. You want to go at me, too, Teddy? Maybe suggest a facelift? Dani, stop. We love who you are. Strong, happy, authentic. We just want to see the real you again. Take a look at that. Oh, little Ashley is perfect.

She weighs seven pounds.

She’s a healthy one. You’re gonna follow that little girl’s entire childhood through her charts, aren’t you? I feel a real connection to her. I can’t explain it. And actually, Shanice, I was thinking, I’m still completely wired, so if you want me to put in another couple of hours, I could answer phones, I could stock supplies. Babe, you’ve already worked a full shift.

I know, but I’m on such a…

Uh, let me talk to you for a second, please. WOMAN [over P.A.]: Nurse to Pediatrics… Ashley, what you are going through now is the product of the adrenaline rush and hormones going through your body. It feels like a high, I know. Some shrinks call it a peak experience, but it’ll throw you off, and I want you to go home. Even if I’m not tired? You’re not tired now, but you will crash, and I don’t want it to happen on your shift. Fine, I will go home, I will get some rest… and I will be ready to report for a more normal day tomorrow. You’re planning on getting here early so you can see the baby before we release her, aren’t you? I don’t want to miss seeing her one more time. You ready to head out?

Yeah.

Thanks. Rest up. We’re gonna work you your next shift. You got it. Shanice is right. You need sleep. Mmm. Well, then you better come back to my place and tuck me in.

Oh. [chuckles]

[chuckles] You catch that hack trying to ambush Grandfather and Aunt Dani? The journalist? Yeah, he was good. He was stealth. He stuck around to get the real story. More like stuck around to get some dirt. If it was me, I wouldn’t have wasted time bantering about privilege. I would have gone straight to whether or not Vernon actually golfs with the police chief, figure out how close his ties to the cops really are. But you already know the answers to those questions because you’re family. Are you reminding me of that? It just seems like you’re enjoying our family woes just a little bit too much. I feel awful for what you guys are going through. Then what? I miss covering the news. Longing for the days gone by? Being there when a story broke was exciting. Now you have a new excitement– raising our teenagers. If you aren’t the picture of hypocrisy. I beg your pardon? Hmm. Takes a lot of stones to make a big speech about how your family always takes responsibility right before using all of your pull to make sure Dani suffers no actual consequences. You lost, Bill. Get over it. Must feel great being an ever-winning Dupree. Gaslighting the entire country into thinking you’re some living saint, when really you’re nothing more than another ruthless D.C. operator. I hope you and your new wife got what you were looking for by making this scene. Now you and Dani are even. But who’s counting, right? Enough is enough, Bill. It’s time for you to declare a ceasefire with Dani so we can all just move on. [laughs] Never thought I’d see Vernon Dupree coming to me hat in hand. This isn’t a request. I’m telling you, this tit for tat needs to end. Oh, on that much we can agree. In fact, I can say the same thing to Dani. Now, where the hell did she disappear to? [R&B music playing] Thank you. [clears throat] [Dani laughing] Why do you always have something to say? They had too much rosemary on the chicken.

I don’t mind rosemary.

I don’t mind it.

It’s just too much…

What did you want, chicken hot wings? Ah, whatever. [both laugh] [sighs] Boy, boy, boy. Why does it seem so empty in here all of a sudden, you know? I mean, it’s been years since Naomi lived here, and Chelsea’s always off somewhere modeling. Maybe it’s because you just walked your firstborn down the aisle and gave her away. [chuckles] Yeah, well…

Bill.

Hmm? What did you do? What? Why are you always so suspicious? Because I have good reason to be.

Don’t start, Dani.

No, no, no, no, no, no, no. There was something in that giving Naomi away.

I don’t know what you’re talking about.

[gasps]

You are outrageous.

I don’t know what you’re talking about. I thought, when the reverend didn’t say “Who gives this woman,” he forgot. You asked him to leave it out, didn’t you? I merely suggested that it’s barbaric for us to stand before witnesses and state that we’re prepared to hand over this beautiful, brilliant woman that we raised. That’s all.

So you built yourself a loophole.

So? Funny how you didn’t find it barbaric when my daddy was handing me over to you. Seeing Naomi take those vows, it just hit me, you know? You were younger than she is when we got married. Mm-hmm. Then I… …started thinking about all the demands I made of you. Wanting you to turn your back on modeling, focus on me and my career, and raising the girls on top of that. Man, I’ll tell you what. If Jacob were to ask Naomi for half the things I asked of you, they’d never find that boy’s body. Because in Bill Hamilton’s plan for his progeny, Naomi is to become president, followed immediately by her appointment to the Supreme Court. Yeah, you’re damn right.

She’s got that kind of promise.

She does. Yeah. You had that, too. You did. I’m sorry I was so dismissive of your dreams and accomplishments, baby. Those are my daughters, too.

Yeah.

And I wouldn’t take back one minute of being home with them. What about the rest of it, huh? All the other ways your sacrifices benefited me. Man, the first year of my practice, my client roster outmatched the top firms in D.C. It was you.

And my father.

No, baby, that was you. You made sure I was taken care of and seen in those spaces and known and applauded. And you tolerated things. All right, we said we weren’t gonna go there today. I know. I know. I just… Seeing Naomi today, it made me realize our little girls are all grown up. And you’re still Dani Dupree. You could walk away from me right now and still have a bigger and better life than the one that I’ve given you. Who are you, and what have you done with my husband? Bill… what fun would my life be if you weren’t in it? Well, let me pay you back. Okay? I promise this next chapter will be worth every runway you walked away from, every magazine cover you didn’t grace, and every spotlight that you let dim because you chose to be with us instead. You gave up a world that adored you to be with a family that needed you. And I’ll spend the rest of my life proving to you that that’s the best decision you ever made, baby. Bill, if I could spend a lifetime with you looking at me like this… …like I am the only person who would ever or could ever be more essential to your happiness… I’d do it again and again. Even if I let you down? Baby, I let you down, too. The love was always there. Yeah. So… …do you promise to give me forever… again? I do. Do you? Beyond forever is how long I promise to love you, Dani. I promise. Cuz, you’ve got to give yourself a break. You didn’t do anything wrong. Except stream my mom in full-on crazy. You were just live streaming a family event like the good little influencer you are. What is wrong with me, Kat? Why didn’t I just shut the thing off when things went south? Because there was a gun. Maybe you got distracted. Listen… I shouldn’t have been so hard on you earlier. Anybody in your shoes would have been totally frozen. I’m ready to unplug everything,

be social media-free.

Hold up. With everything we’ve got going on, that’s taking it way too far. That’s all you care about? When you’re not down on yourself, you care about it, too. We’ve gone all out on this, Chels. You didn’t spend all those years building your brand just to tank it. Aunt Dani would tell you the same thing. Even if I get her arrested? That’s not gonna happen. But, yeah, even then. Because she doesn’t blame you for what happened. So stop blaming yourself. You know how I always have that little insecure voice in my head? I’m not sure how little it is. All through nursing school, it was there. “Am I smart enough? Am I capable enough? Can I actually hold other people’s lives in my hands?” But after tonight it’s gone, like, like it actually turned off. That’s great, babe. Never doubted you. I don’t know why you doubt you. You are my one-man pep squad. You got me here, you know that? You’ve got a lot of support, sweetie. True. You, my mom… …and good friends like Naomi and Andre. Oh, my God. I can’t believe I’m still wearing my wedding dress. Well, I’d be happy to help you out of it. Mm, I got into it. I’m sure I can get out of it alone. Oh, come on, babe. You got to give me a little credit, right? I mean, it was an unforgettable wedding day. Some might call it an adventure. Hmm. Fantasies about my wedding day? Nope. None involved getting shot at and crashing a press conference. I thought you wanted to go with me tonight, that you didn’t want to be alone? And I wasn’t. You made sure I was surrounded by Duprees. And we finally closed the chapter on Dani. That woman is a drama queen.

I just…

Oh, I know, I know. Ugh! She needs constant attention, I swear. But you know what? She’s not getting that from me anymore. You know why? Because from this moment on, it is all about you.

Oh.

Mmm. Mm-hmm. [“Teach Me” by Elijah Jamal featuring Audiomoe playing] I got your message when I was in my car. You told me to let myself in. I hate to disappoint you, but if you’re wanting to go out… Oh… I don’t. Baby, class is in sessionI’m ready for the lessonThen, ooh, I can’t waitYou’ve got all my attentionYeah, and I’m here to listenDo whatever you say.[groans] I better split. Before we even…? If we even, neither one of us will get any sleep, and I got an early shift tomorrow.

Stop it, sexy.

You know you can’t resist me. Nope. But don’t you want me to be awake enough to remember every delicious moment?

Oh, I’m sorry.

That settles it. Sleep. And next time I’m in this apartment, we will go all night long.

Mmm…

Mm-hmm. [yawns] You sure? That is just mean.

Okay, fine.

Love you. Love you, too. Missing out. Hey. I thought you were gonna meet me in bed. Yeah, I thought I would join you in the shower until I heard your phone on speaker while talking to Mike. Right, that was, um, that was about the wrongful death suit. The-the judge, he… Yeah. Okay, look, let me make it up to you. How? Nothing’s gone the way that I’ve planned. Well, I mean, we did manage to get married. That counts, doesn’t it?

It’s everything.

Yeah. And you said you have a wedding surprise for me. I’m dying to know what that is. Look, I… I’m all surprised out. I’m not a fighter like you, Bill. I can’t just jump in the ring one minute and then shake it off the next. I’m a nervous wreck. This is about Dani? Before the press conference, you said none of it mattered. Well, maybe having a gun drawn on me by your deranged ex has sunk in. Baby, Dani’s not a factor in our lives anymore. Yeah, for you maybe, but she’s living rent-free in my head now, and until I can shake this out… can you just be patient with me? Okay. What does that mean exactly? I don’t know. Slow, I guess. Bill, I need to take this slow. All right. Come here. Come on.

Where are we going?

To our beginning. Come on. Here. Okay. Okay, and now we hold hands. Come on. And what is this gonna prove? This is the hand I gave you today, and this is the hand you gave me. Hmm. And then you get lucky. I’m already lucky. Hey. You’re mine, Mrs. Hamilton. Can’t get luckier than that. Can I get you anything? You already got me more than I need for the moment. You’re that easy to please, huh? Maybe. Or maybe I want to know what made you text me tonight. You told me I was a one-night stand. Can’t a woman change her mind? Of course. Can a woman tell me why? What if I told you I nearly blew away my ex at his wedding? Oh, okay. Are-are you serious? Well, don’t worry. The only thing that got hurt were a few flower arrangements. You’re not lying, are you? Where have you been all day? Under a rock? Yeah, uh, something like that. Well, when you decide to join the rest of the world, there is a viral video of my escapades, in case you don’t want to miss it. So what are you doing? You hiding out? I don’t have to. My daddy solves all my problems. How does getting you off the hook from shooting up a wedding jibe with civil rights? Cops, my friend, cops. Daddy used to fear them. Now they fear Daddy. So, we’re celebrating? Or exorcising demons.

Maybe a bit of both.

Hmm. And nobody was hurt? Not physically. Your takeaway is… Don’t pack heat at weddings. I’m serious, Dani. I know. Listen, I’m glad you called me over… but on the real, I’m just a part of this whole attraction-to-danger thing that you have. You got to get this wild side under control. I know, I know. It is the straight and narrow for me from now on, like a proper Dupree woman. Hmm. Even if it kills me.

Daytime Soap Opera Short Recaps

Recap written by Michelle & Cheryl

Bill told Hayley that he had to do a press conference because he couldn’t let Dani get away with what she did at the wedding, but Hayley wanted to get over it. She wanted to get in the covers and celebrated their wedding, but he wasn’t letting Dani get away with it. When Vernon wanted to do the press conference to cover up what Dani did, but Martin said the incident went viral. Vernon said he wanted to help Dani. Nicole said she could say Dani was going through psychological problems. While they were talking, the press showed up. Vernon talked to them about what Dani did. He said it wasn’t a crime. The press wanted to know why Dani was there. Dani showed up and said they all deserved to know the truth. Nicole wanted to know why Dani was at the press conference. Bill said he could handle whatever Dani did but wasn’t going to let her bully his wife. Vernon told Bill to back off at the conference. When Bill walked away from the podium, he let the press know the conference was over. Bradley confronted Martin about how his grandparents reacted when they were talking about his past. Dani said she would do it again to have him look at her the way he did. He asked if she promised to keep him forever. She asked if he promised to keep her too. When Dani’s flashback was over, she got on her phone. Cat tried to convince Chelsea that she didn’t do anything wrong for streaming the wedding. Chelsea blamed herself for what happened. Beyond The Gates Updates

Update written by Suzanne

Martin naps on the couch, having a nightmare. Smitty wakes him up, so he jerks awake, sweating.

Anita looks out the window. Vernon comes in, wondering what she’s thinking so hard about. She was remembering their early days of marriage, when times were simpler. They thought they could change the world. It’s much harder to deal with the problems that arise from having children and grandchildren. Anita concludes, “They hurt, we bleed.” She vents that she could kill Bill with her bare hands. Vernon says they don’t have a choice on how to go forward. Martin must be protected. She laments that Dani will pay the price – again.

Meanwhile, Dani threatens Bill with his golf club, so he tells the others to leave and close the door. He wants to know what she wants and if she feels better, having gotten that out of her system. She says that she doesn’t yet, but then she slaps him, hard.

In Nicole’s office, Ted praises Kat’s marketing skills. Her ideas have increased his bookings by 10% (he’s a plastic surgeon). Andre is impressed and notes that her talents will take her far in life. Nicole asks him where he’s shooting the video bio. He replies that he’ll shoot tin her office, and also on Ted’s grounds. He jokingly asks Ted if he’s camera shy. Ted says that he’s not and he’ll be there to support his beautiful wife, who’s getting an award. Ted and Nicole hold each other in their arms. Kat and Andre agree that the couple should talk about how they met and the rest of their story. Ted praises Andre and says that it’s good to see him. Andre points out that they all saved him. He thanks them, saying he can never repay them. He and Ted hug warmly.

Naomi and Chelsea watch one of Chelsea’s social media videos and talk about it. Naomi doesn’t know how Chelsea can live such a public life – always being judged. It doesn’t bother Chelsea. She tells her sister about the purse line that she and Kat are working on. Naomi thinks it sounds great but wonders how their mom, Dani, will feel. Chelsea hasn’t told Dani yet about her plans, or that she’s quitting modeling.

Bill picks up chairs, making fun of Dani for threatening him and slapping him. She says that beating him to death would be fun, but she demands answers. How dare he move his whore into her community, she asks. He bristles at that, saying that Hayley is no whore. They like it there in Fairmont Crest. He sold his house and has been living in a suite at the Ritz. She suggests, exasperated, that he find another house, outside of their community. He says that it’s the best address in Maryland. She reminds him that it was marrying her, and getting help from her family, that moved him into their community in the first place, and it was her father’s connections that jump-started his career. He laughs derisively, telling her to get over herself. He states that he would have gotten to the same place, with or without their help. They didn’t make him; he made himself and brought her along for the ride. She looks at him like he’s crazy.

Leslie, AKA Dana, sits with Jan and Mona at the diner, Orphy Gene’s. Jan notices that Leslie seems down. She says that the guy sitting nearby reminds her of her late husband, Alan. They know she lost him not too long ago, but she’s still processing her grief. Leslie brightens up and asks to hear about the rich folks gossip. Mona tells her about Dani punching Hayley, and also about how Vanessa saw her throw the coffee cups. She asks Mona for more, but Mona says that things go smoothly at Ted and Nicole’s. They are in love. Leslie admires Nicole, so Mona says that Nicole is amazing and inspirational.

Andre recalls his first year after the plane crash that killed his parents, Stan and Ira (I guess Ira is a girl’s name here). Nicole tells him that she and Ted haven’t flown together since. Andre hates to think how his life would’ve turned out if not for them and Martin. Kat hugs him. They’re happy to have him home. Kat wants to take his photo, but he won’t let her. He doesn’t want to be on social media. He takes a photo of the three of them, instead.

Naomi advises Chelsea that both she and Dani are adults, so she can do what she wants and not have to worry about Dani. Chelsea just wants to do her own thing. Naomi can relate because she moved away, married Jacob and opened her own firm. Dani also did that she was young, ignoring her parents’ wishes. Chelsea feels that Dani is very fragile right now and that being her manager is all she has. Naomi reminds her of when they were younger, always waiting to see what mood Dani was in. They still do that, and she thinks Chelsea should move out, to get away from all that. Chelsea feels guilty, but Phoebe tells her that there’s only one life, and that Dani is a survivor. It’s not easy, but she has to create a distance of her own.

Dani and Bill argue. He says that his marrying Hayley is not about her. He fell in love. She knew he was unfaithful, but she ignored it, to keep the family together. He says that he can’t do this with her. He says that people change and move on. He postulates that maybe one day, she can wish he and Hayley well. She replies, “Never.” and hopes that he has a long life of misery. She would put a curse on him if she could, and she calls him a selfish, heartless bastard. He warns her never to touch Hayley again. She storms out of his office, but Hayley is outside, so she figures she must have heard everything. She sneers at Hayley that she’s not special and warns her that “Past is prologue.” Once she gets in the elevator, Dani breaks down, crying.

Vanessa is in a bar called Upswing (at the country club?). She’s sitting in a booth, wearing sunglasses and a scarf, like she’s in disguise. A handsome man comes in and takes the other seat. He flirts with her and grabs her knee under the table, which she enjoys. Dani arrives, orders a drink and wonders what’s going on. She can tell that this is not Vanessa’s husband, Doug.

Doug is sitting in his car when a man named Randy Parker gets in. Doug hands him some kind of paper or packet. They shake hands, and Randy leaves.

Kat lets Andre know that she’ll bet at the photo shoot tomorrow. He agrees that she can be his assistant. She warns that things will be tense between Dani and Chelsea. She asks him how he’s doing, so he tells her that he’s been photographing a new resort in Bali. They laugh about how tough that must have been. She feels bad that he lost his parents in a horrible accident, even though it was 10 years ago. She admires that he lives his life on his own terms. He reminds her that he lives off his parents’ inheritance, which makes him feel uncomfortable, but she thinks it balances out, since he gives so much to charity. He asks what she’s been to and whether she has anyone. She shares that she’s been working a lot and has no time for romance. She’s been learning about business. She declares that she and Chelsea will do big things, but she swears him to secrecy for now. He agrees, and they do a brother-sister type of secret handshake, which is cute.

Anita and Vernon look at a photo of Dani as a baby. It kills them that they have to add to her pain, as well as give in to Bill and help Hayley. Vernon suggests that they call his bluff, but Anita doesn’t want to gamble with Martin’s future. Vernon tells her that she’s not telling Martin about any of this, and she agrees. She notes that they’ve never spoke about “that night,” and he adds that it’s for good reason. They don’t admit their choices, so they’ll move forward as planned. Then they hug.

Mona leaves her friends at Orphy Gene’s to go back to work. She complains about having too much work and overtime. Leslie points out that she’ll be glad to get that in her paycheck. She has missed Mona at choir practice.

Smitty tells Martin that he thinks he should talk to someone about the nightmares he’s been having. Martin doesn’t react well to that suggestion. Martin gets a text about a sudden family meeting with his grandparents, so he has to leave.

Naomi and Chelsea hug. Chelsea decides that she’ll wait until after the wedding, and Dani’s feeling better, to tell her the news. They both the text, too.

Nicole, Ted and the rest also get the text. Nicole hopes that Dani didn’t do something she shouldn’t.

Vanessa tells Dani that she hired the guy for some role-playing. She’s Incognito Taylor and he’s her biggest fan. Dani looks shocked, so Vanessa laughs and says that she’s joking. She introduces the guy to Dani as Zeke from her office. She thanks him for dropping off her keys, and he leaves. Dani notes that role-playing with him might not be such a bad idea. She tells Vanessa about her visit with Bill (leaving out the golf club and the slap). Dani vents to Vanessa that she can’t reach the man that she was married to for her over 30 years. It just makes her hurt and more angry. She’s decided to go to Paris after Chelsea’s photo shoot tomorrow. Vanessa thinks that’s a great idea. Dani gets the text. She says that if Bill has done one more thing to disrespect her, she can’t be held responsible for her reaction. She leaves.

Mona gets a bracelet from Laura as a thank-you for her previous advice. Nicole walks in and admires it. Laura tells Nicole that the smaller country club room is available for both nights. Nicole just has to choose which night. She tells them both to take off early. When Laura brings up Maui again, Nicole mentions that she met Ted at a medical conference there.

Naomi spills her guts to Chelsea about how angry she is at their dad. She despises him for the affairs and the way he treated their mom. She no longer feels any love toward him. Chelsea is shocked by what she said because they used to be so close. Nicole declares, “Never again,” saying that she has no father.

Bill and Hayley pick up debris in his office, including a photo of them (now the glass is cracked). She’s sad that they both lost their relationship with Naomi. She misses her. She hopes that she’s worth his losses. He agrees that she is worth it. He was going through the motions before meeting her. She jump-started his heart. He tells her that he’ll never regret being with her, and he kisses her.

Naomi plays piano and sings a little, at her grandparents’ place. Chelsea is on her phone nearby, on her live social media feed. She tries to take a video of Naomi, but Naomi waves her off. Nicole and the rest of her family arrive. Kat suggests to Chelsea that she’s eating too much meat (before the photo shoot tomorrow). She apologizes for acting like Dani and urges Chelsea to eat it, quick, before Dani arrives. It’s too late because Dani arrives and takes the plate away from Chelsea. Chelsea seems used to this, so she doesn’t even resist. Dani fixes her a plate of vegetables instead. Naomi suggests to Dani that she let Chelsea live her own life, but Dani doesn’t want to hear what she says. She says that eating healthy food is just as easy as eating junk food. Martins asks Nicole quietly how he can help. Nicole says that Dani needs someone to listen to her. Vernon and Anita arrive.

They tell their family that there’s been a change of plans, and they won’t like. Dani tells them, first, that she’s going to Paris tomorrow, but Vernon says that won’t do because they need everyone there to go to the wedding as a family. Dani, shocked, says, “No!”

Laura tells someone on the phone that Nicole likes option #3 for the Lynch brunch menu. She heads out from the office, alone.

Anita reminds them all that they’re Duprees – they don’t cower or hide. She says, “If Bill has the nerve to marry that heifer in our community, then he’ll do it looking at their pissed-off faces.” Vernon says that it’s not just their family; he needs to get people from the community to turn out for it, too. Dani can’t believe they want her to support her ex, who’s marrying again. Martin says he’s all in for making Bill and Hayley as uncomfortable as possible. Dani refuses, but Anita tells her that she needs to be there. Naomi also likes the idea. Dani storms off. Vernon follows her and asks her to attend, saying that he has a good reason that he can’t tell her. He asks her to trust him. She agrees, reluctantly. He kisses her on the forehead and thanks her. Vernon goes back and tells Anita that Dani feels betrayed all over again. Anita assures him that they’ll make it right.

Later, Naomi and Chelsea ask Dani if she’s okay. They don’t understand what’s going on. Dani figures that Bill got to her parents somehow. They think of ways that they could ruin the wedding and sympathize with Dani’s feelings. They tell her, “We got you,” and they all huge.

Laura drives home, but someone behind her comes up, fast, with their brights on, and she’s run off the road. Leslie arrives at home, all dressed in a black motorcycle outfit. She smiles after taking off the helmet.

Vernon wonders whether everything is okay with Martin because he mentioned wanting more. Martin replies that his homelife is solid. He’s just wondering what his next challenge will be. Vernon promises to help him, and Martin mentions that Vernon has already done so much for him. He owes him everything.

Dani pulls away from her mom, saying that she doesn’t want to cry because it makes her weak. She expects that Anita is going to give her a hard time for punching Hayley. Anita tells her that she wasn’t thrilled about her display of temper. Dani rants some more about Hayley’s betrayal; she says that it felt good to punch her. Anita assures her that she’s human and that sometimes folks deserve a sucker punch. She worries that Dani will make it a habit. Dani confides that she thought she was okay when they signed the divorce papers, but Bill and Hayley having their wedding at the country club and then moving in to Fairmont Crest made her angry all over again. Anita lets her know that she didn’t do anything to deserve this treatment. She urges Dani to let go of her anger, or it will eat her alive. She reminds her that she’s a Dupree, so she needs to find her inner strength and not let the losers get the best of her.

Nicole tells Ted that Bill bought the house on Marigold, so Dani went ballistic. She fills him in on the punch. She sighs that she tries to be the voice of reason with Dani, but she’s angry at Bill and Hayley herself. Ted is sympathetic. They hope Dani can move on. Ted has to get to the hospital, so she asks him if he can come by for the video bio for their awards ceremony that Andre is filming. He replies that he’ll try to be there. She reminds him that he’s Andre’s favorite uncle. He suggests that they plan a family gathering while Andre is in town, so she agrees. He kisses her neck, saying she smells good. She chuckles and sends him off.

Nurse Ashley’s mom, Jan, shows up to bring her a healthy lunch at work. Leslie and her daughter, Eva, are also there with Jan. They’re very supportive of Ashley’s new career. Eva wishes she had done something more with her life than be a hairdresser. They all assure her that there’s nothing with that, and that women always needs their hair done. Ashley thanks Jan for being such a great single mom to her and sacrificing for her. They hug.

Martin and Vernon discuss the woman in the diner yesterday that was grateful to Vernon’s years of service as senator and civil rights champion, and who also appreciated Martin. Martin compliments Vernon and how much he admires him. He remembers watching him when he was young, demonstrating, and how he was committed to non-violence, even though he was behind bars sometimes. Vernon reminds him that he was just one of so many, like Dr. King and John Louis before him. Martin worries that he hasn’t always lived up to his grandfather’s standards, but Vernon is proud of him.

Dani, still with Anita, looks at Bill and Hayley’s wedding invitation. She wishes she could stop thinking about them, like Nicole suggested, but she gets upset every time she sees their wedding preparations, etc. She wonders if she should move. Anita tells her that would be unacceptable because she belongs there. She reminds Dani that her grandfather designed and built Fairmont Crest, and she’s not going to be chased out by these interlopers. She promises that this will all pass. She just needs to get through it. Dani doesn’t know how she could have been so blind about Bill and asks her mom if she ever suspected Bill was cheating on her with Hayley. Anita lets her know that she had no clue and reminds Dani that Bill and Hayler are expert liars. Dani tells her that she plans to put all of her time and energy into making them pay. Anita looks worried.

Hayley drops by to see Nicole, who’s not happy to see her.

Back at the hospital, Eva tells Ashley that she envies her job and her relationship with hot firefighter Derek. Ashley assures her that this was all careful planning, and things are working out the way they should. She hugs her mom. Jan, Leslie, and Eva go to the elevator. Ted walks out as Leslie watches him carefully, like she knows him.

Nicole’s two assistants chat. Laura is going to Maui with her boyfriend, David, and hopes he might propose. Mona suggests that she enjoy being young and free. She points out that she hasn’t known him very long. Laura agrees and asks if Mona ever regretted not getting married or having kids. Mona replies, “No, not even for a second.” She shares that marriage is not for everyone. Laura is happy to get advice from her and says she can be like the daughter she never had. Mona gives her a strange look.

Nicole can’t believe that Hayley is there. Hayley brought her some homemade cookies. She admits that Dani’s assault at the country club was mortifying. She’s willing to forget what she did, for the sake of peace. She wants Nicole to help her assimilate into the community because she used to like Hayley. Nicole is shocked that Hayley would think she would side with her over her sister. Her loyalties always lie with Dani, especially after the double-betrayal of her and Bill. She knows that Hayley used her friendship with Naomi to steal Bill. Hayley swears that she didn’t plan to fall in love or hurt anyone. She says that she “fell in love with an inconvenient man.” Nicole replies that she’s going to have to deal with the consequences. Hayley seems oblivious to what Nicole’s saying. She goes on to declare that the damage is already done, but her support could help her. She hopes that Dani will decide to accept her. She tried apologizing already, she pouts, but Dani can’t get past her anger. Nicole tells her that Dani is hurt. She tells Hayley to take her cookies and go.

At the hospital, Nicole welcomes Ashley to the hospital. Ashley meets Shanice Johnson, her preceptor AKA her trainer. They shake hands. Shanice is impressed that Ashley knew what a preceptor is. She says that she’ll be teaching her many things, to take notes, ask questions and ask for help. Ashley follows her.

Vernon rants more to Martin about how Bill has trashed his family. He states that Anita had the right instincts about Bill. She kept him at a distance, whereas he gave him the benefit of the doubt because Dani loved him. He helped him with his practice and shared his connections with celebrities. Martin talks about Bill’s ego and how he’s a control freak and narcissist. Vernon is happy to see the end of Bill and his connection to their family.

Hayley goes to Bill’s office. He notices that her cheek is red, so she tells him that’s from Dani’s fist. Shocked and angry, he takes out his phone, but she tells him to let it go. It’s her battle, not his. She recovered from the slap with her head held high. Dani needed the win, she says graciously. He agrees, reluctantly. She pouts about her morning, which she thought would be great, since she was picking up the keys to their new home. First Vanessa gave her an earful, then Dani, and then Nicole. He can’t believe that she went to see Nicole. She thought that Nicole, being a psychologist, would be more objective. He guesses that didn’t go well. She tells him that Nicole sent her and her cookies packing. She wonders if they should elope or go to Vegas rather than have their wedding at the country club. He asks if she wants to have it there, and she does, but she doesn’t want it to be just work friends and people he knows. He thinks he can fix it.

At home, Dani gets dressed to the nines in a beautiful blue dress. She looks at the photo of her and Bill, which is cracked. She takes a shot for courage and then does her makeup.

Martin’s husband, Dani, Smitty, is on the phone with someone as he carries a basket of laundry down some stairs. He tells the person on the line that he has to make a decision. He thanks them for checking. Martin comes home, and they hug.

Andre flirts with Ashley again at the hospital. He asks if she’s still with the firefighter who stole her away. She chuckles that they were never together and makes fun of him for flirting. He takes some photos of her before he leaves, which she doesn’t see. Shanice warns Ashley against Andre, saying she doesn’t want to end up as another notch on his belt.

Vernon answers the doorbell at home when it rings. He sees Bill and tells him that he’s not welcome. Bill says amiably that he heard about the incident at the country club. He thinks this was “not cool” of Dani. Vernon asks him impatiently what he wants. Bill wants a favor from him – he wants Hayley to have guests at her wedding. He knows that Vernon can get his family and others to attend. Vernon tells him that the Dupree women want nothing to do with him or the wedding, so he can’t help him. Bill reminds him that he’s done many favors for him and his family when they needed help. Vernon glares at him as he leaves.

Eva and her mom, Leslie, are at home, plotting something. Leslie offers to do this thing without Eva being involved. Eva tells her that she’s already involved and they need to do this. She insists that Leslie deserves better.

Martin’s husband, Smitty, massages his shoulders on the couch. Martin is frustrated about how long things take in Congress. He tells him that he’s enjoyed spending time with his granddad. It reminds him of his legacy. He mentions that they adopted Samantha and Tyrell. Smitty can’t believe they’re teens already. He tells Martin that Tyrell passed his calculus test. Martin wonders if that is good enough. Smitty thinks that’s the best he can do right now. That makes Martin wonder what’s going on, so Smitty informs him that Tyrell is going through something right now… He’s been more standoffish and quiet. Martin also asks him if they should allow Samantha, who’s 16, to date. Smitty thinks that giving their permission is better than her sneaking around. Martin suggests half-jokingly that he tag along.

Vernon greets Anita when she returns home. He tells her that they have a problem.

Ted and Nicole are in her office. Andre arrives and compliments the warmth of her office. He wants to capture it on film. He also likes Ted’s practice, which has nice grounds. After Andre leaves, Ted says wistfully that Andre reminds him so much of his late brother. He’s also very glad to be with her.

Vernon fills Anita in on what Bill said. They agree that they have to protect Martin as they clasp hands.

Dani marches into Bill’s office, ignoring the receptionists that try to stop her. She grabs one of his golf clubs, sweeps everything off his desk with it, and then waves it at him threateningly. (The other people in the office scurry out of the way as she does this) She calls him a sorry S.O.B.

Transcript provided by Suzanne

THIS STILL NEEDS SOME EDITING!

[“Best of My Love” by the Emotions playing]

Calvin: Good morning, Mrs. Dupree.

Anita: Good morning, Calvin.

Calvin: You look radiant.

Anita: Thank you.

Calvin: And top of the morning to you, Dr. Richardson. May I take your coat?

Nicole: Yes, thank you.

Calvin: Always a pleasure. Let me know if either of you need anything.

Thank you.

Nicole: Mother, you look beautiful as usual.

Anita: Looking pretty swank yourself. Have you spoken to Dani?

Nicole: I texted. No response.

Anita: Well, I hope no news is good news and Dani’s not out there giving her emotions free reign. If so, God help us all.

Anita: How are the boys, Jerome?

Jerome: Oh, you know, this time of year, busy, busy, busy.

Anita: Thank you, Jerome.

Jerome: Oh, my pleasure. Please, enjoy your breakfast.

Anita: Thank you. It never ceases to amaze me how two sisters can grow up in the same environment with the same advantages and turn out completely different.

Nicole: One of the things I’ve learned from my patients… People are born who they are. Outside influence either takes or doesn’t.

Anita: Dani is exactly herself. A force of nature with no apologies. My little force of nature is all over the place right now. Truthfully, I can’t fault her for that. Dani was blindsided by Bill and Hayley’s affair. And she surely never anticipated the end of her marriage. But here’s what I don’t understand, Nicole. Bill moved out months ago. I thought Dani had come to some sort of acceptance.

Nicole: She was getting there. But literally, the minute the divorce is final, Bill and Hayley are booking the country club for their wedding. Set Dani off again.

Dani: Morning, Vanessa.

Vanessa: Oh, well, so much for stop by for a cup of coffee.

Dani: Plenty more mugs where those came from.

Vanessa: Is that? You still have the wedding invitation. Why didn’t you do what everyone else in Fairmont did and toss it in the garbage?

Dani: It’s the audacity. I can’t get over it. It’s bad enough Bill’s marrying that traitor. But to do it here? I will be the laughingstock of Fairmont.

Vanessa: Who are you? And what have you done with Dani? You are picking a hell of a time to start caring about what people think. Besides You’re not factoring in the Dupree of it all. Your family rules this community. Your grandfather built it. Everyone’s on your side.

Dani: Be nice to think so.

Vanessa: Fact! Know what you need? Dedicated spa time. Get your head out of Bill and Hayley for a couple hours and put yourself in therapeutic hands.

Dani: Tempting. Maybe later. I have to meet my mother and sister at the club. They’re worried about me.

Anita: I never did care for Bill. Oh, I put on a good show for the sake of peace in the family, but There were red flags from the very beginning.. Even when he was hiding behind that public servant persona No, that didn’t last long soon as Bill married Dani his true ambition came out just in time to use your father for a leg up Once the criminal law practice took off, we got the real Bill Hamilton with his shiny suits and pocket squares. That calculated charm reminded me of some of the shadier denizens of the music business. Oh, they charm you silly while they took everything. Your money, your gift, your talent, your looks, your pride. Too many talented girls fell into that trap and were never heard from again.

Nicole: Not you.

Anita: I kept my eye on the prize. I was going to be the best at anything I took on. And I wanted to take on the world. No way was I going to be seduced off my path by some jive turkey trying to get over.

Nicole: Well, I wish Dani inherited that gene.

Anita: I often think how different her life would be if she didn’t give up her career for Bill. I tried to warn her. Use your father as an example. Vernon embraced who I was. Never once tried to change me. But, you know your sister. Gets her mind set and that’s it. Nothing would do but to become Mrs. Bill Hamilton. And here we are. Bill’s about to marry the proverbial younger woman and Dani’s a powder keg primed to explode.

Nicole: Naomi.

Anita: She’s still joining us?

Nicole: Just running late. Says something came up.

Ashley: Derek! You didn’t have to do this.

Derek: Sure I did. My lady’s turning the page on a brand new chapter. You need to meet it well fortified.

Ashley: Wow.

Derek: Welcome to the rest of your life, Nurse Ashley Morgan.

Dani: Hang tight, I just got a touch base with Chelsea.

Chelsea: Hey, Mom, what’s up?

Dani: I’m just calling to remind you about your wardrobe fitting later today.

Chelsea: Believe it or not, I know how to keep a calendar.

Dani: Well, it is my job to make sure you are where you’re supposed to be when you are supposed to be there. And so far, I think it’s served you well. Agreed?

Chelsea: Whatever, gotta go.

Dani: Ungrateful little brat.

Vanessa: Do me a favor. Don’t channel your anger and frustration with Bill into riding poor Chelsea. I don’t think you realize the pressure you put on that girl.

Dani: Well, excuse me while I find my tiny violin. Chelsea is a successful model making big bucks. She’s got millions of followers on social media eager to like and copy whatever she does.

Vanessa: It’s a life any 23 year old would kill for. The life you wanted.

Dani: The life I had.

Vanessa: I wish I’d known you in your modeling days. You must have been something.

Dani: Those were some good times. I had so much to prove. That I was grown, even though I was a baby. That I could make it doing what I wanted to do. The entire time terrified out of my mind. But I pulled it off. Fake it till you make it? That was me. The most seemingly confident 17 year old ever on the planet. Until Chelsea came along.

Chelsea: Just when I think mom can’t be a bigger control freak, my phone rings again. Oh, God, Kat, I hate my life.

Kat: We’ll be changing it soon enough. In the meantime, embrace what you do. People will be interested in our brand because you’re Chelsea Hamilton. Fashion icon and social media influencer. We’ll be tapping into that a lot, so don’t knock it.

Chelsea: I just want to get on with it, you know? Once we launch my purse line, we’ll be on our way to giving the Kardashians a run for their money. I’m just not sure about the timing. Mom’s a pain, but it doesn’t feel right to walk out on her just yet.

Kat: But we agreed on a timetable.

Chelsea: I know, I know, but that was before Dad dumped Mom for Hayley. And these last few weeks, since the divorce was finalized and wedding prep started at the club, Mom’s been like insane. If I quit now, she’ll have lost everything that defines her. She gets on my nerves, but that’s my mom. I love her, and I don’t know if I can pull that trigger.

Anita: Mmm. Don’t think all this focus on Dani has made me forget you’re being honored. Now, what’s this award again? I mean, there are so many, it’s hard to keep track.

Nicole: Look who’s talking, Miss EGOT. It’s the State of Maryland Distinguished Service Award in Psychiatry.

Anita: Right. Vernon received one for his work in the movement.

Nicole: It’s a nice plaque.

Anita: It is a fitting tribute for the wonderful, healing work that you do. You consistently make your father and me very proud. Sometimes we don’t say that enough.

Wedding Planner: The wedding’s just a couple days away and you still haven’t given me a final headcount.

Hayley: I’d like all invited guests to be accommodated.

Wedding Planner: I’m sorry, I thought most of them either hadn’t responded or they sent regrets.

Hayley: True, but I’m an optimist by nature. Don’t worry about cost, money’s no object. Excuse me.

Hayley: Dani. Wait.

Dani: What?

Hayley: There it is. The animosity. Feels like something physical. I hate it, Dani. You, Chelsea, especially Naomi. We’re like the family I never had. We were close. And I realized that I can never have it back in that way, but surely there’s something we can salvage.

Dani: You really are a piece of work. I thought we were close too, Hayley. So did Naomi, your so-called best friend. We opened our hearts to the poor little orphan girl all alone in the world. Made a place for you at our table. And you paid us back by stealing Bill? My husband? My daughter’s father?

Hayley: I didn’t intend to hurt anyone.

Dani: How do you live with yourself? How do you look yourself in the mirror every day and walk around this world thinking you’re a good person when you betrayed the people who cared about you? And now you want it to be what? Bygones?

Hayley: If we could just find a way to be civil.

Dani: Back up, Hayley. This conversation is over.

Ashley: Do you have any idea how much I appreciate you? You’ve always been so patient and supportive. I know it hasn’t always been easy.

Derek: Right. Because being with you is such hardship.

Ashley: And to be frustrating. All those nights you wanted to make plans like a normal couple and I blew you off to go study.

Derek: Garland Memorial has no idea what an asset it’s getting today.

Ashley: I’ve wanted this all my life. When I was little. Every Halloween I had to be a nurse. Somehow I knew it was important work even though I didn’t quite understand what that work was. And it meant easing pain. Saving lives. Being of comfort. ”

Derek: You’ll be great. Know why? Because you’re one of the most selfless people I have ever known.

Ashley: I’m honored that you love me.

Dani: Well, I just ran into Hayley. Do you know how much I loathe that woman?

Anita: Well, good morning to you too.

Dani: I can’t believe I let myself be taken in by that cheap conniver. I trusted her. Hell, I’m the one who convinced Bill to hire her. Let’s all laugh about that. Meanwhile, she’s moving in on him. I’m no Hayley fan by any means, but last time I checked, it takes two. And I’m willing to bet Bill was the instigator.

Wouldn’t have been the first time he cheated.

Dani: Look, I’m not making any excuses, but before Hayley, Bill kept his affairs away from home, which made it easier to pretend it wasn’t happening. He got with Hayley right under our roof. I will never forget either of them for that.

Caroline: Law offices of Bill Hamilton Esquire. How may I help you? I’ll let him know. Thank you.

Bill: What is with this schedule? You do realize I’m getting married at the week.

Caroline: I also know you’ll be taking off on your honeymoon, which is why I’ve scheduled you within an inch of your life for the next two days.

Bill: Well, hopefully none of my clients will commit a heinous crime this week. Is Hayley in?

Caroline: At the new house, picking up the keys.

Bill: You know what this is, Caroline?

Caroline: What?

Bill: A new dawn.

Hayley: Hey, Vanessa.

Vanessa: Hayley.

Hayley: You realize that’s the last time I’ll ever have to ring that doorbell? Finally getting the keys to our brand new home. I can’t believe I’m going to be living in Fairmont Crest.

Vanessa: Frankly, neither can I. Mind if I ask, what are you thinking?

Hayley: Excuse me?

Vanessa: You and Bill could live anywhere. Instead, you choose Dani’s community, and make no mistake, it is Dani’s community. Not Bill’s. And these upstanding citizens will rally around all things Dupree and freeze you out.

Hayley: Sell many homes with that negative attitude?

Vanessa: The women who live inside these gates? You’re their worst nightmare. The sexy younger husband thief.

Hayley: But it wasn’t like that. Bill and I didn’t set out to fall in love. Trust me, life would be a lot easier.

Vanessa: No one will care how you justify it. You’ll be a social outcast.

Hayley: Well, I’m choosing to stay positive. Sure, it’ll take time to be accepted. I’m sure Dani’s poisoning everyone against me. But, I am confident that if I’m patient and persistent, things will work out. They always do. I assume the designer has finished furnishing the house?

Vanessa: All done.

Hayley: Excellent. I can’t wait to take a look around. Thanks so much for your help and your discretion.

Vanessa: Just doing my job. Good luck, honey. You’re going to need it.

Oh, Congressman Richardson, man. Good to see you.

Martin: Good to be seen.

Will you be having the usual?

The usual it is.

Martin: Granddad.

Vernon: Martin.

Martin: You’re looking awfully pleased with yourself.

Vernon: Taking a moment of reflection.

Martin: Well, it’s good to appreciate your blessings. Yeah, show gratitude, and God will keep them coming. Words to live by?

Vernon: Uh, look no further than here. I got a magical wife, and she can sing. Beautiful family. I’ve managed to do some good in this world. Of course, a lot of that hard work is being undone, but my grandson is in the trenches. Yeah, doing his part. To make it right. And I get to cheer him on from the sidelines in retired glory. What, what’s not to be grateful for? A life well lived, indeed.

Martin: And I still want to be just like you when I grow up.

Vernon: I’d say you’re about half way there. Making a difference for your constituents. Solid marriage. Couple of terrific kids.

Martin: I know, but…

Vernon: But what?

Martin: I want more. I just haven’t figured out what more is yet.

Jacob: So what’s your day like, bae?

Naomi: Um, settlement conference this afternoon. But first order of business is checking in on mom.

Jacob: Well, have you spoken to your dad?

Naomi: No. That’s the way I like it.

Jacob: You and your dad used to be tight, Naomi.

Naomi: Yeah, well, that was a long time ago. And apparently not tight enough to stop him from sleeping with my so called best friend. You know what? I don’t want to talk about him. Especially when you’re standing there all fine in plain clothes, distracting me again. I swear, Jacob Hawthorne, you make it hard to leave this house. Here’s a thought. Let’s not. Let’s cancel everything but each other today.

Jacob: Come on. Baby, you know I want to. But the D.C. Metro Police Department frowns on a brand new robbery homicide detectives playing hooky with their wives.

Naomi: I don’t know about this new gig of yours, then. When you were a beat cop, we got to sneak in breaks.

Jacob: Well, that just means I have to work harder when I get home there, right? Or, before you leave Oh, Naomi Hamilton iPhone?

Naomi: Hmm. Yeah, we’re bad, know that? It’s the way you like it, right?

Jacob: Yeah.

How is it?

Vernon: Pretty good. As usual.

Bessie: I am so sorry to interrupt.

Vernon: That’s why we’re here. To be accessible to the community. What’s on your mind?

Bessie: When I glanced over here and I saw one of my heroes, Vernon Dupree, That’s an honor.

Vernon: Aren’t you kind. What’s your name?

Bessie: I’m Bessie. I was involved in the movement back in the 70’s, too. Now, I wasn’t as good as you, of course, but I did do my time.

Vernon: How awesome is that?

Bessie: I’m a big fan of Anita’s as well. Her group was so inspirational. It’s just living proof that black girls can come right out of their projects and conquer the world. Well, I’m not going to take any more of your time. I just wanted to let you know that your service in the movement and also as a senator is much, much appreciated.

Vernon: It was my privilege. Thank you for stopping by, Bessie.

Bessie: Thank you, Senator. Have a good day.

Vernon: Is that right there? That’s the kind of interaction that wins voters permanently. The small, personal moments. People never forget them.

Martin: Voters don’t forget a brush with greatness, either. You’re an icon, Granddad. And there’s no doubt about that.

Bill: Ha ha ha! Wayne! It’s been too long, man.

Wayne: Thanks for seeing me on such short notice. I know you’re busy.

Bill: Aw, come on, man. Never too busy for an old friend. I still miss seeing you out in the field, by the way. You’re not here to rehash your glory days. How can I help you?

Wayne: It’s my son. He’s in serious trouble.

Bill: Why don’t you let me be the judge of that? Here, sit. Tell me what’s going on.

Wayne: Terry has a drug problem. He broke into someone’s home and he stole money and jewelry. And a security camera got a clear shot of him and he got arrested.

Bill: Is he in custody?

Wayne: No, I was able to bail him out. But the victims are determined to press charges.

Bill: Okay, and they are?

Wayne: Um, uh, Jerry and Diana Overton.

Bill: Oh, he owns World Tech Innovations.

Wayne: I don’t want my son’s life to be trashed before it’s even started. So I was hoping It’s you could represent him.

Bill: I’ll do even better than that. I’ll make the whole thing go away.

Dani: Every time I think about Hayley, another blood vessel explodes in my head.

Nicole: Here’s a suggestion. Don’t. Don’t think about Hayley or Bill. They’re not worth it.

Dani: Well, it must be wonderful to be you. With your perfect husband, and your perfect marriage, no must, no fuss, right? Just smooth sailing through life with a man who not only wouldn’t cheat on you, but also doesn’t seem to know that any other woman exists on the planet.

Anita: Don’t be snarky with your sister. Nicole’s just trying to help.

Nicole: It’s okay. I recognize I’ve been luckier in love than Dani. Blessed in a way she hasn’t. She needs to take pot shots at me to feel better. I’m good with it.

Dani: Thank you for your permission, Nicole. I just truly wonder if you think that telling me to not think about Bill and Hayley is at all helpful.

Anita: Okay, I know this isn’t easy, but Nicole is not wrong. Obsessing over what’s past isn’t hurting the two of them. They’re moving forward, post haste. But it’s keeping you stuck in a cycle of anger, and that isn’t healthy, baby.

Dani: Oh, I’ll be healthy again. As soon as I make a couple of cheaters pay for blowing up my life.

Ashley: These last two years with you have been the best ever.

Derek: I feel the same way. I can’t imagine my life without you anymore.

Ashley: Good. Because I’m not going anywhere.

Derek: Except the hospital. We gotta hit.

Ashley: What? Wait, you’re taking me?

Derek: And picking you up. You get the full service from me today.

Ashley: Oh really? I’m gonna hold you to that later.

Derek: Please do.

Ashley: I love you, Derek. You’re the only man I’ll ever want.

Derek: It’s go time. Ready?

Ashley: Ready.

Jacob: What’s that, babe?

Naomi: It’s a gift for Ashley.

Jacob: Jacob: Oh yeah, it’s her first day on the job. Wait, what’d we get her?

Naomi: A stethoscope on a chain.

Jacob: Oh, okay. I mean, that’s cool, right?

Naomi:I, uh, got you something, too. Actually, it’s for both of us.

Jacob: Oh, yeah? Mm hmm. Well, let’s see. Really?

Naomi:Now, I expect my detective husband to arrest me tonight for a serious crime.

Jacob: Well, I’ll drum up the charges and wrap the warrant.

Naomi:Okay.

Jacob: Turn around.

Naomi:Oh, my God!

So what am I looking at here? Golf for business or pleasure?

Martin: For inspiration. A couple of kids in my district expressed interest. Granddad and I are going to give them a crash course on the basics. Expand their horizons a little.

Anita: I love that about you. Always looking to inspire our youth. Turn them on to something new. I’m so proud of you, son.

Dani: On that, my sister and I can agree.

Uh oh. You two disagreeing?

Nicole: Mother and I are trying to convince Dani Bill is not worth the grief she’s putting herself through.

Dani: And I resent the implication that I created the situation.

No one is saying that.

Dani: Good. Because I’m not the one who cheated. Ever. I was the one who was cheated on. Dumped. Remember?

I’m sorry. I’m with Mom and Grandmother. Good riddance to that guy. You’re better off without him.

Dani: Well, what all you well meaning people don’t seem to understand is that Bill and I got married when I was 19. My entire adult life revolved around him and our family.

Nicole: Erasing yourself was your first mistake.

Anita: Let Dani have her say.

Dani: Right, wrong, indifferent, that’s how it was. Bill’s world that I lived in. My focus was the home that I created for him, the daughters I gave him. Now the girls are out of the house, Bill is gone, everything. Every routine that was familiar has been upended. And that wasn’t the way it was supposed to be. Bill and I were supposed to be together forever. That was the pact.

Right.

Dani: But he broke it. And I don’t know what to do with that. It’s, it’s confusing. It’s angering. And I have every right to those feelings.

Vernon: Yes, you do. Just remember, you’ve given that man power he didn’t earn. That devotion you gave to Bill? He threw it back in your face. And he walked away with his little chippy. He is unworthy of even one of your tears. But come on now. Who’s the best?

Dani: Me.

Vernon: Who’s the brightest?

Dani: Me.

Vernon: That’s right. Never forget that.

Dani: Maybe you’re all right. Maybe I should just let go.

Anita: If you can do that, praise Jesus.

Chelsea: Check out granddad working his magic. He actually got Mom to laugh. Didn’t realize how much I miss hearing that.

Kat: Can I ask you a question?

Chelsea: When did you start checking first?

Kat: You haven’t said much about your father. Maybe you’d rather not go there?

Chelsea: Nothing’s off limits with us, Kat. You’re not just my cousin, you’re my best friend. Ask whatever you want. Do you hate him?

Kat: I hate what he did. The awful way he treated my mom. Like all their years together. Our family meant nothing. But he’s my dad. I don’t know how to hate him.

Naomi: Wanna take lessons from me?

Chelsea: Hey, sis.

Naomi: Chelsea, Kat.

You okay?

I’m good.

Am I hallucinating or is our mother actually smiling?

I know, right? Long time no see. I think we should take advantage of the sun while it’s out.

Bill: All done. The Overtons won’t be pressing charges.

Wayne: That was amazing.

Bill: Connections and favors, man. That’s what makes the world go round.

Wayne: Whatever you charge, it’s well worth the cost.

Bill: No, no, no charge.

Wayne: You’re kidding? You just saved my kid.

Bill: All I did was make a phone call. You just owe me one. You see? It all balances out.

Vernon: So there I was, middle of the night, dead of winter, trying to not only find a store that was open, But one that sold Asian pears. I never even heard of Asian pears. But that’s what my pregnant wife wanted, so off I went.

What can I say? Dani was demanding even in the womb.

Nicole: That’s my sister. Difficult from the jump.

Dani: Don’t hate because I know what I want.

Anita: And you managed to find a couple too. A little bruised, but you weren’t gonna hear me complain.

Martin: Your dedication to a cause is truly a thing of wonder, Granddad.

Oh, you know how Daddy is when it comes to his baby girl. What Dani wants, Dani gets.

Vernon: Oh, it wasn’t about Dani. It was about this woman right here. If Anita asked, I’d run through fire then and now.

Hi. Hope you’re paying attention. That’s relationship goals right there.

Naomi: Nope, not interested. It’s a single life for me.

Anita: Oh, you just haven’t met the one yet. When you do, you’ll change your tune.

Nicole: Or not. There is nothing wrong with being single.

This from the woman who’s been married most of her life.

Mm hmm. You’re gonna be alright, sissy.

Hmm.

Andre: Congratulations. Uh, Nicole told me you were starting today.

Ashley: Look who landed. The elusive Andre Richardson. We haven’t seen much of you lately.

Andre: Yeah, I’ve been keeping busy.

Ashley: Jet-setting around, taking amazing pictures of tropical islands and luxury resorts.

Andre: Yeah, it’s a dirty job.

Ashley: What brings you home? Is it a hit and run, or are you staying a while?

Andre: Uh, I’m in between gigs. So I offered to shoot on Nicole’s video bio for her latest award. Yeah, I’m checking out the hospital for potential locations. And since I’m around, I volunteered to shoot a fashion layout for Chelsea. After that, I’m open. Especially to suggestions from the lovely Nurse Ashley.

Bill: Hey babe, how’s the house?

Hayley: Uh, above and beyond my wildest dreams, babe.

Bill: Hey, that was the plan, right? Where are you now?

Hayley: I’m at the country club, about to go to the restaurant for a bite. I am famished.

Bill: So am I, but not for food. I was thinking we could meet at my hotel suite this afternoon.

Hayley: We might be able to work something out one last time before the wedding.

Bill: One last time?

Hayley: Yes.

Anita: Vernon and I make it a practice to count our blessings and express gratitude every day. And this is today’s moment for me. Of course, it’s trying time because one of our own is in pain. But it warms my heart to see this beautiful family that Vernon and I created together in this way. To think, a march on Washington in the 70s resulted in the existence of such remarkable, accomplished human beings. I am so proud of each and every one of you.

Vanessa: Sorry to hit and run, but Vanessa McBride Realty is popping and I’ve got a showing. As the seller’s agent, I’ve been bound by confidentiality. But now that we’ve closed, I wanted you guys to hear it from me. The home that was for sale on Marigold Road? Bill bought it.

Wait. In Fairmont?

Vanessa: Hayley picked up the keys this morning.

Dani: Are you freaking kidding me? So now the plan is to flaunt this woman in my face forever?

You’re right. It’s outrageous, but what can we do? Bill can buy wherever he chooses.

Vanessa: I’m sorry to dump this on you, but I really have to go.

Dani: I don’t believe this. They’re moving in and I’m just supposed to lie down for this? I’m done being disrespected. Done.

Baby, now…

Dani: You have a hell of a lot of nerve. Getting married at the country club is disrespectful enough. But then you and Bill leave. It’s one thing to move into this community? Expect me to live down the way from my cheating ex husband and his piece of trash new wife while you all go on about your Married business having no consequences for what you did? No That will not happen

Hayley: Dani…You’re upset. I get that Let’s not do this.

Dani: Shut up – I’m talking. You could have stopped this, Hayley. You could have dug way down for a shred of decency and told Bill that buying here was not only a terrible idea, it was heartless. You could have told him that the two of you had inflicted enough damage. And you could have stayed in the home that Bill bought when he left. Or moved to another community. But you went along with living in Fairmont. Who knows? Maybe it was your idea. Well, let me be the first to give you a housewarming present.

Woman at bar: Welcome to Fairmont Crest.

Beyond The Gates Updates

Update written by Suzanne

First, some family background to help you out: The main family of this soap is the wealthy Dupree family. Grandfather Vernon was an activist and senator. His wife, Anita, was a singer who raised their family and supported his work (Both are now retired). Anita dresses in fancy clothes, but with her own personal tastes. Everyone on the show dresses very well. They have two daughters: Dani (a former model) and Nicole, a successful doctor. Nicole is married to a surgeon, Ted. They have two children: Martin, an ambitious congressman, and Kat, who’s starting a business with her cousin, Chelsea. Ted has a nephew, Andre, who’s a photographer. Martin is gay and has a husband, Smitty, a former reporter. They have two teens, Tyrell and Samantha. Dani has two daughters, Naomi and Chelsea. Her ex-husband, Bill, is a savvy attorney. He and Dani are divorced, and he’s marrying a former family friend, Hayley. Naomi’s best friend is Ashley, a nurse. Ashley is married to Derek, a firefighter. Naomi’s boyfriend is Jacob, a police detective.

SUMMARY:

Dr. Nicole Dupree Richardson drives her car into the gated community of Fairmont Crest while the song “Best of My Love” by The Emotions plays. She and her mom, Anita Dupree, are welcomed into the country club restaurant by the host, Calvin (clearly they eat there a lot). Anita and Nicole hug and sit down. They talk about Dani, another daughter, who’s supposed to be there, but neither has heard from her. Anita hopes that Dani isn’t giving her emotions free freight. The waiter, Jerome, greets them. Anita sighs that Nicole and Dani are so different. They talk about how Dani’s ex-husband, Bill, cheated on her with Hayley. Dani is still reeling from the end of her marriage, and now that Bill and Hayley are getting married there at the club, it’s set her off again (even though she and Bill have been divorced for a while now).

Dani is in her kitchen, looking upset and making coffee. She has two mugs. She throws one across the room. It smashes against the wall. She tries to calm down, but instead, she throws the other mug, too. Her good friend Vanessa drops by for a visit. She sees the mug debris on the floor and makes a funny comment. She can’t believe it when she sees that Dani still has the invitation to Bill and Hayley’s wedding. She thinks Dani should have thrown it into the garbage like most people have. Dani feels humiliated, but Vanessa assures her that she shouldn’t be embarrassed because her family rules Fairmont. She suggests they have a spa day to make her feel better. Dani likes the idea, but she has to meet her mom and sister.

Anita mentions to Nicole that she never liked Bill and felt that he just used them to get ahead and become more upper crust. It reminds her of how men acted in the music business (when she was a singer years ago). She wishes Dani had taken her advice and not given up her modeling career. Naomi texts Nicole to let her know that she’s running late. Naomi, meanwhile, is having sex with her husband, Jacob Hawthorne.

New nurse Ashley Morgan is greeted by her husband, Derek, in their kitchen. He is wearing pants and an apron (no shirt) as he offers her breakfast. He wanted to do something special for her on her first day as nurse.

Dani phones her daughter, Chelsea, to remind her about her wardrobe fitting later on. Chelsea is annoyed that her mom doesn’t think she can handle her life. After she gets off the phone, Dani remarks to Vanessa that her daughter is a brat. Chelsea is a model (and influencer) like Dani was when she was younger. Vanessa wishes she had known Dani back when she was a model. Dani speaks fondly of those days, saying that she faked confidence that she didn’t have.

Chelsea gripes about her mom to her cousin, Kat. Kat reminds her that they’re going to be starting their new line of purses, so they will be making their mark. Chelsea isn’t sure that she wants to abandon her mom just yet.

Nicole is going to receive an important award, so Anita tells her that she’s very proud of her. Nearby, Hayley is chatting with her wedding planner – giving her instructions. The planner points out that most of the invited guests haven’t responded, but Hayley dismisses the idea that there is any problem. She spies Dani, who’s just walked in. Hayley tells her that she’s upset that Dani and her family all hate her. She wonders if they can salvage their relationships. Dani tears into her for stealing Bill, saying that she betrayed them all. Hayley asks if they can find a way to be civil to each other, but Dani’s not having it.

Ashley thanks Derek for his support, as she sits on his lap. He is proud of her starting her new job as a nurse at Garland Memorial. He praises her for being so selfless, and they kiss.

Dani arrives at the table where Anita and Nicole sit, griping about Hayley. They remind her that Bill is also to blame, and in fact, he cheated before that. Dani is aware of that, but is more insulted that he slept with the woman that they had taken in, right under their roof. Dani makes fun of Nicole having the perfect husband and family.

Bill arrives at his office. His assistant, Caroline, has given him a very heavy schedule. She knows that he’ll be off on his honeymoon soon, so that’s why she’s given him so much to do before that. Bill tells her earnestly that “This is a new dawn.”

Hayley gets the keys for her new home in Fairmont Crest from Vanessa, her realtor. Vanessa wonders why she and Bill picked the same community where Bill’s family lives. She points out that everyone will freeze Hayley out, socially, thinking of her as the “sexy, younger, husband thief.” Hayley is optimistic that people will come around. Vanessa wishes her luck, sarcastically, saying that she’s going to need it.

Vernon, Anita’s retired Senator husband, meets his grandson, Martin, at a diner called Orphy Gene’s. It’s clear that they go there often. Vernon counts his many blessings and praises Martin for following in his footsteps to make a difference in their community. Martin declares that he wants more, but he’s not sure what that is yet.

Naomi checks in via text with her mom and Dani. She undresses Jacob again, to have more sex. Jacob is a police detective at the DC police department.

A woman, Bessy, walks up to Vernon and Martin at the diner. She chats with them about how she was also involved with the civil rights movement in the 70’s. She admires Anita as well, and his work as a senator. They shake hands, and he’s glad to hear from her. Vernon points out to Martin that this is the best way to get people to vote for you – talking to them personally and giving them attention.

A man named Wayne (a former football player) visits Bill in his office to ask him for help. He tells him that his son, Terry, was arrested. He’d gotten in trouble with drugs, so he broke into someone’s home to steal jewelry and cash. He tells Bill that the couple he stole from were Diana and Jerry Overton. Bill tells him that he’ll make this go away.

Dani and Nicole bicker (in front of Anita) about marriage. Naomi thinks that Dani should stop obsessing about Bill and Hayley; Anita agrees. Dani doesn’t like that advice and wants to make the cheaters pay.

Derek leaves with Ashley, saying that he’ll take her to the hospital and pick her up after her shift. She’s impressed with how much he’s spoiling her. They kiss.

Naomi tells Jacob that she has a gift for Ashley – a stethoscope on a nice chain. She also got him a gift: pink, fuzzy handcuffs. He puts them on her

Vernon and Martin join Anita, Dani and Nicole. Dani vents that everything she had is one, telling Nicole that she has a right to her feelings. Vernon says soothing things to Dani, which calms her down. He agrees with her, saying that Bill is not worth her tears. They do a little verbal thing that seems like they’ve done it many times in the past, where he gets her to say that she’s the best and brightest. She agrees to let it go.

Chelsea and Kat sit nearby, admiring how Vernon got Dani to cheer up and actually laugh. Naomi comes in and joins them. Chelsea’s not sure how she feels about hating her dad for all he did, but Naomi already feels that way. They go over to join the rest of the family in the lounge.

Ashley starts her first day as nurse at the hospital.

Bill gets the Overtons to drop the charges. Wayne is astonished and how quickly that happened. He’s even more shocked when Bill tells him that there’ll be no charge. Bill tells him that he owes him one.

Vernon tells his family a story (that they’ve probably heard many times already) about trying to find Asian pears when Anita was pregnant with Dani. They talk about family and marriage. Naomi says she plans to stay single. Nicole tells her that there’s nothing wrong with that.

At the hospital, Andre, a photographer (Naomi’s husband’s nephew), chats with Ashley and congratulates her on her first day. He flirts with her as well.

Bill has a short video chat with Hayley. They make a date to have some sexy time in his hotel room.

Vanessa arrives at the club briefly to tell Dani that Bill and Hayley bought a house in Fairmont Crest. Dani is outraged, saying that she’s done being disrespected. She approaches Hayley and yells at her for moving into the house. She slaps Hayley, hard. The rest of the family each glare at Hayley as they walk out, one at a time. A woman sitting nearby, played by guest star Karen Huger of “The Real Housewives of The Potomac.” She says to Hayley, “Welcome to Fairmont Crest.”
