EJ went to Johnny and Chanel’s apartment to apologize to Johnny. Johnny assumed he was talking about John’s death. They talked about John which led EJ to tell Johnny that he was more like John than he was like him. Johnny didn’t agree with him after what he did that night. EJ said his actions were justified. He said he knew he was forcing Johnny to forgive him, but he was going to set him free. EJ said he loved Johnny but sometimes loving someone meant letting them go. He told Johnny he would never bother him again if that was what he wanted. Johnny said he hated what he did to Sami, but he was a good father. He said EJ was important to him. Johnny said after losing John, he didn’t think he could lose anyone else. EJ suggested that he take his time and think about it. He said he would accept any answer Johnny gave him. Chanel ran into Paulina at the hospital. Paulina said she was there for a physical while Chanel said she was there for a follow up to her cancer surgery. Chanel said she didn’t say anything because she didn’t want to worry her or Johnny. She said she was going to ask Sarah if she and Johnny could try to have a baby.

At the hospital, Xander told Sarah that he was exonerated for Philip’s assault. Sarah said that didn’t change anything between them. Xander said he wasn’t there to get back together with her. He said he was there to get shared custody. She said she wouldn’t agree to shared custody. He warned her they would do this the hard way. Belle wanted Philip to go over his statement again. Philip told her a random person beat him up. Belle said she didn’t believe him and was afraid Xander would finish the job. She said she couldn’t lose another person she cared about. A confused Philip wondered who she lost. Belle told him her father passed away. Philip offered his condolences. He said he was the reason why John was in the meth lab. Belle said what happened to her father was an accident but what happened to him wasn’t. She said she wasn’t giving up until she could prove he was lying. Later on, Xander went to see Philip. There was a flashback of Xander warning Philip not to finger him as the attacker or he would lose his stake in Titan and his inheritance. When the flashback was over, Xander told Philip they would both lose everything if they didn’t find a way to make their relationship work. Philip said he didn’t know if he could work with him. Xander apologized and gave him reasons why he did what he did. He told Philip that he regretted what he did. Philip apologized for what he did. Xander said he was glad he told him that Sarah knew about the forged letter, but she couldn’t know that Philip was the one who exposed her. Sarah gave Chanel an examination and told her she was all clear, but she told her to wait to try and have a baby. She told Chanel that her being pregnant would be hard to detect a recurrence of cancer. Sarah advised that waiting would give her the best chance of having a baby. Later on, Sarah went to examine Philip. She asked him if he told Xander that she knew about the forged letter. Philip said he didn’t tell Xander. Xander ran into Paulina. He said he wanted Abe’s support since he was exonerated of Philip’s attack. When Belle went home, she talked to Marlena about EJ. She told Marlena that she was having second thoughts about EJ since her father’s death. Marlena said she had her own reservations about EJ but it was her decision. Marlena stumbled when she tried to get up. She blamed it on getting up too quickly. When Belle left, Marlena broke down and cried. She called Sarah and left a message for Sarah to call her. Belle went to see EJ and told him that she loved him. EJ said he loved her too. Rafe went to the police station to give Jada information about EJ’s shooter. Jada was shocked that he planted a camera in the DiMera mansion, but she was willing to overlook it. They talked about the memory stick and said they needed to find it. While they were talking, they wondered if they could ever be friends one day.

Bo apologized to Hope for not being there for her. Hope said he was there for her. She wished her father were alive to see them get back together. Bo felt like Doug knew and was watching over them. He was happy to wake up and find out that they had four grandchildren. Hope wondered if he was ready to be a full-time grandfather. They went downstairs, and he commented on how the Horton house looked the same. There were flashbacks of events that happened at the house. Hope told Bo about the time capsule and how Ciara opened it. Bo felt like you could see Tom and Alice throughout the house. He thought they were proud of their family. While they sat on the couch, Bo reflected on their lives together. He couldn’t believe they were together since they were so different from each other. She laughed at what he said. Bo felt honored when he was given a Christmas ornament. They continued to talk about their lives together. There were more flashbacks of a young Tom and Alice together. Bo and Hope looked at the family portraits on the mantle. Hope talked about how hard it was for Doug and Julie to get together. Alice helped Hope see the best in Julie. There was a flashback of Alice helping Bo and Hope sneak around. Bo told Hope that her grandparents were a godsend. She noticed how quiet the house was. Bo implied that he may have asked for some time alone. He had a celebration planned for them. Bo wanted her to check her closet and wear the special surprise he had for her. There were more flashbacks of Tom and Alice.

Hope came downstairs in a wedding dress. Bo was wearing a suit. The living room was decked out for a wedding. Bo promised her that they would be together forever this time. He asked her if he could make her his wife again. Bo got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. She immediately said yes to his proposal. He got up and hugged her. Bo promised to respect and cherish her. He promised to take Hope to be his wife from now until forever. He gave Hope her mother’s wedding ring. She pronounced them married, and they kissed each other. Bo had another surprise for her. Shawn got the Fancy Face back for them. The boat belonged to them again. There were flashbacks of the wedding they had on the boat years ago. Hope wished they had simple times like that again. Bo suggested they get on the boat again and go where the wind would take them. Hope wasn’t sure about that, but they lost so much time together. They could visit their family around the world. She liked the idea of having Bo to herself for a while. Hope agreed to go with Bo as long as they returned to Salem. Bo agreed to what she wanted. Tom and Alice were older in the flashbacks. They talked about their family being grown and how they moved out. She missed the chaos of the family being together. Alice wondered if the house was too big for them now. Tom insisted that the house wasn’t too big for them since the family was still around. Bo suggested that he and Hope do what Doug and Julie did. He wanted to retire at the family home. Hope loved the idea. They sat at Tom and Alice’s plaques at the town square. Bo and Hope talked about how hard it was to say goodbye. There were more flashbacks of Bo and Hope through the years. They said goodbye to Salem and promised to be back. Bo and Hope walked off.

Javi noticed Gabi struggling with her work. Gabi apologized for firing him and asked him to come back to work. He told her he already got accepted to be a firefighter/paramedic at the Salem Fire Department. Gabi said she was happy for him. Javi was grateful for his support. Chad and Leo talked about the paper, Philip waking up from his coma, and Chad’s issues with Cat. After their conversation, they went to the pub. When Leo brought up what was going on with Titan, he asked Chad if he was going to save DiMera. Chad said he didn’t want to save DiMera. Will came out of the pub and was surprised to see Chad with Leo. Chad and Leo said they were colleagues. When Chad left, Leo apologized to Will for the pain he caused him and Sonny. Will said he noticed how Leo was upset at John’s funeral and read the obituary he wrote. He said it was a touching tribute and wondered how different Leo’s life would have been if John raised him. Leo wondered how different it would have been too. Javi showed up and met Will. Will left to meet with Gabi and Arianna. Javi asked Leo about John’s funeral. He comforted Leo and told him he got the job.

Chad went to see Cat to apologize to her for Jennifer throwing her out of the house. Cat said she deserved the way Jennifer treated her, but Chad didn’t think so. He said he made a lot of mistakes and realized that everyone deserved forgiveness. Chad said he didn’t blame Jack and Jennifer for their feelings, but he wasn’t going to let them dictate who he talks to unless she didn’t want to see him again. Cat said she didn’t want to be the reason why his family was in pain. Chad said Abby was gone and there was nothing they could do to bring her back. He said he hoped Jack and Jennifer realized grief was a heavy burden to carry so they shouldn’t carry a grudge too. Chad said he would think about Abby for the rest of his life, but he couldn’t stop living. Cat said she has been taking baby steps in order to start living. Chad said they could take the steps together. Cat offered to make him dinner to make up for what happened when they went skydiving. He accepted her offer. Tate went to pick up Sophia for the graduation celebration. Sophia said she didn’t feel like going because the baby kept kicking. When she put his hand on her stomach to feel the kicking, Tate said it didn’t feel real. She was concerned about not having a family for the baby. Tate said they could find a family after the baby was born, but she was concerned that they would get attached to the baby. Holly and Arianna ran into each other at the town square. Arianna told Holly about the guy she hooked up with. Holly told her about her guy situation. Arianna told her Tate wanted her back. Holly said she would like to get back together with Tate but there might be another guy she’s interested in. When she brought up Tate and Sophia, they showed up. Arianna sent Holly and Tate to get froyo so she and Sophia could catch up. She asked Sophia about her feelings for Tate. Sophia said she had a crush on Tate forever. Arianna asked why she was giving up the baby if she wanted to hold on to Tate. Sophia said she was too young to have a baby and wasn’t ready to be a mother. She said she wanted Tate to want her too. Aaron showed up when Holly and Tate got the froyo. Holly left to call her mother. Aaron couldn’t believe Tate was having a baby with Sophia. Tate said he wanted to be with Holly. He thought there might be a chance after the baby was adopted. Gabi and Will met at the Bistro. They talked about John until Arianna showed up. Gabi brought up Arianna sneaking out of the house. Will said she did that in Arizona. Arianna told them she was an adult. Gabi said that would happen when she was living on her own. Will agreed with Gabi. At the pub, Doug found an envelope at the bar addressed to him. It had pictures of Holly and Arianna in it as well as a note. The note warned him that something may happen to Holly and Arianna. Doug went to see Leo. He showed Leo the note and pictures and asked for another loan to take care of the loan shark. Leo said he could give him money and found a lead on the necklace. Doug said he got in this mess because he took a job delivering merchandise for a fence and met a girl. He said the next morning his car was broken into and the merchandise was gone. Doug said he needed the money but now his in a bigger bind.

Xander was about to smother Philip with a pillow when he saw him open his eyes. Kayla told Sarah that EJ’s budget for the hospital wasn’t what she hoped. Sarah offered to work night shifts if they were shorthanded since she didn’t have a husband to go home to. Kayla had to leave because she had to get ready for Steve’s retirement party. Kate went to the hospital to visit Philip and noticed the cop guarding his room walking around. She got scared because no one was outside of Philip’s room. Kate and Sarah raced to Philip’s room. She was excited when she saw that he was awake. Sarah noticed Xander and wanted to know why he was there. Xander told her that he was checking on Philip. He said that Philip hadn’t said anything yet. Kate wondered if Philip could hear anything. Philip wanted to know what happened. Xander pretended to be relieved and Kate and Sarah threw him out of the room. Philip told them that he didn’t remember anything. Sarah wanted to examine Philip so Kate left the room. Kate ran into the cop and yelled at him for leaving his post. She said he was going to pay for allowing Xander to get to Philip. The cop apologized and told her that he suddenly felt sick after he drank his coffee. Kate realized that Xander slipped in the room after the cop felt sick. Jack and Jennifer prepared for Steve’s retirement party. Jennifer surprised Jack with a birthday cupcake. He hadn’t felt like celebrating since they lost Abby, but she said that she would want him to do it. Jennifer lit the candle, and Jack blew it out. They talked about wishes, and Jennifer hoped to never hear “Cat Greene’s” name again. Alex let Stephanie know that he wanted to look his best to impress her parents. Stephanie let him know that her mother was okay with them. Her father had a few reservations about it. Alex remembered being raised by Adrienne. They ended up making out to help him relax. Steve looked at an Irish blessing from John’s funeral. He became lost in his thoughts and believed that Bonnie was with him. It turned out that she was Adrienne. She appeared to him in a dream with a message for him. Steve hoped it was a miracle and she was back from the dead. Adrienne told him that John was with her and that she promised to look out for him. Steve told her that he missed her, and they became emotional. He woke up and told Kayla about his dream. Kayla told him that her mother said dreams are the way they could see their loved ones. She told him about the dinner Stephanie planned, but he wasn’t up for it. Kayla refused to take no for an answer.

Xander rushed through the town square and ran into Jada. She wanted to talk to him about Philip. She told him that she got a call from Kate, and she told him that the officer watching Philip got sick when he snuck into the room. Jada wanted to know why he was there. Xander said he wanted to be there for his brother. She warned him not to leave town because she was going to ask him more questions. Steve’s retirement party began. Stephanie, Alex, Jack and Jennifer were there. She invited Bo and Hope, but they needed their time. Jack made a joke about who would keep Salem safe without Black Patch. Steve talked about arriving in Salem 40 years ago. Alex wondered what brought Steve to Salem. Steve told him that he was working for his Uncle Victor. He wanted to get revenge against Bo. Steve told him that Bo was the reason why he lost his eye. They fought over a woman. He was bitter about it for a while. There were flashbacks of Steve and Kayla from the 80s. Steve said Kayla was the reason why he turned his life around. He credited Adrienne for also turning his life around. There were flashbacks of Steve and Adrienne. Jack announced that Steve was the rock of their family. He talked about Steve donating his kidney to him. Jack made a toast to Steve. Everyone got involved in the video chat with Tripp, Wendy, and Joey. Jada walked in while they were celebrating. She let everyone know that she was dealing with a case. Jada told everyone that Philip was awake, but he was getting tests done. They talked about Marcus during the party and how he and Steve reconnected as adults. Steve felt Marcus was gone too soon just like John. Jada got a text from Kate. She hugged Steve and said goodbye. Jack asked him to take on one more case. Jennifer wanted help finding Alice’s necklace. They wanted to know if he would take on the case. Steve told them about Bo’s offer to team up. He called Bo about it. Bo and Hope were willing to help him. Steve was back in business. Jennifer was thankful for his help. She and Jack left the party. They were going back to Boston, but they would be back soon. Jada went to Philip’s room and saw Kate by his side. He wanted to answer questions. Jada wondered if he got his memory back about what happened to him. He said he was a victim of a brutal attack. Philip said that Xander wasn’t his attacker. Kate and Jada were shocked by his revelation.

At the hospital, Kayla checked on Kate who was with Philip. Kayla told Kate that Philip’s vitals were improving so she should get rest. Kate said she would get sleep, but she hoped that Philip would wake up. Kayla said he wouldn’t likely wake up that night but it should be in a few days. Kate said she wanted him to wake up so she could have Xander arrested. Maggie and Sarah talked about John’s service. While they were talking, Sarah talked about Xander and his mother. She said she thought Xander changed and was shocked that he didn’t. Sarah said she loved him but that wasn’t enough. She said she felt guilty about what she did to Xander, but he did what she thought he would do. Sarah said Xander had her second guessing herself since he said what she did was worse. She said he told her that she let him bond with Philip. Maggie said Xander was making excuses. Sarah said she might not be able to resist his pull on her. She thought it would be better if she and Victoria left town. Maggie said that might cost her Victoria since Xander had parental rights. Sarah decided to talk to Xander.

Kayla ran into Xander and ripped into him for not being able to control his temper which caused him to ruin his life. After Xander talked to Kayla, Sarah called him. He went over to the mansion. Sarah told him he wasn’t getting custody, so she wanted to talk about visitation. She offered to let him have supervised visits, but he wasn’t allowed to show up unannounced. Sarah said he could only come on times that were convenient for her and Victoria. She told him to take it or leave it. Xander took the deal. When Xander wanted to see Victoria, Sarah stopped him and told him Victoria was down for the night. Sarah told him he brought this on himself and said she made the rules. An upset Xander told Sarah that she was the reason why Philip got attacked. Belle went to the police station and told Jada that she wanted to put Philip and EJ’s attackers in jail. She said she had a case against Xander. Shawn showed up to talk to Jada. When Belle left, Shawn apologized for lying about being sick. Jada said Belle told her what happened, and she was happy that Bo was better even though it was at John’s expense. Belle ran into EJ at the town square. He wanted her to tell him if she didn’t want to see him or talk to him anymore. Belle apologized and said it wasn’t the right time. She said her feelings didn’t change, but she didn’t want to let her father down. EJ said he understood that she needed time. He told her he loved her. When he left, Shawn showed up. They talked about Belle telling Jada about the drug theft. Shawn thought Jada wasn’t happy that he told Belle about it first. Sarah told Maggie that she hated Xander and loved him at the same time. Xander went to Philip’s room. Kate wanted to check on Philip one more time. Xander picked up a pillow and told Philip it would be over soon.

Jack went to Abby’s grave and asked her to show John around in heaven. Bo and Hope were at the town square and talked about how much things have changed in Salem. Hope told Bo that they should go back to the house, but Bo said he promised Roman and Kate that he would be back. He said he couldn’t believe that John was dead. Julie talked to Jennifer about missing John’s wake. Jennifer said she wanted to be with her family on the anniversary of Abby’s death. They talked about losing Doug and John. While they were talking, they talked about seeing familiar faces again and how great it was that Bo was walking around. Hope showed up. She said she felt guilty about celebrating Bo’s recovery after losing John. Julie let her know that she shouldn’t feel guilty. Jennifer brought them ice cream. Julie said she wished Doug was there to see Hope and Bo get back together. Hope said Doug didn’t always like Bo, but he won them both over. There were flashbacks of Julie, Bo, and Hope. The ladies celebrated Bo and Hope getting back together. Later on, when Hope and Jennifer were alone, they talked about the necklace Doug stole. Jennifer said she was looking into it, but she didn’t find anything yet. Hope said she would help her. They stopped talking when Julie came back.

Julie and Hope talked about Bo being back in their lives. Hope said she and Bo were starting over again. Julie told her to hold on to her gratitude. Hope thanked her for loving her father. Marlena, Roman, Kayla, Steve, and Shane were at the pub. Bo walked in the pub. They made a toast to John. Roman couldn’t believe that Bo was back. Marlena told them that she was grateful for their friendships and all the adventures they had. Bo talked about when he first met John. Steve thought about the Pawn coming to Salem. Kayla talked about Marlena helping John. Marlena said that was when she started falling in love with him. They talked about John’s plastic surgery and Marlena suspecting that he was Stefano. There was a flashback of John and Marlena water rafting. Bo mentioned everything that Shane has done. Shane said he was happy that Andrew would be marrying John’s son. They talked about thinking John was Roman. Marlena apologized to Roman for the memories. Roman said he was sad about the things he missed because of Stefano. When Steve said he and John used to talk about their enemies, they all decided to do it. Roman brought up Stefano. Marlena brought up Orpheus and wondered why he was obsessed with revenge. There were flashbacks of Orpheus and John and Marlena making love. Shane said they were all family and had each other’s backs. Marlena talked about the times John saved her life and how she put his life in danger. Bo said he and Hope were thinking about sailing around the world, but Kayla wanted him to wait since they just got him back. Marlena said John was in her heart even though he wasn’t there. She said she would never say goodbye. Steve told Bo that he was giving up the business because he didn’t want to do it alone. Bo suggested that he and Hope be his partners. He told Steve that he didn’t have to make a decision right now.

Eric talked about his connection to John even when he found out he wasn’t his father. He was a mentor for kids. Eric was proud to preside over his funeral. He told everyone that Sami wanted to be there. She wanted him to read a message from her. Sami was grateful for the life John gave her even though their road was a rocky one. John didn’t ruin her life. He made her life better. She acknowledged that she was a nightmare when she was a kid, but she loved John. Bo got into an argument with Hope about going to John’s funeral. He told her that he would be fine. Hope didn’t want him to risk hurting himself, or John’s sacrifice would be for nothing. Bo assured her that he wouldn’t leave if it would risk his life. He wanted to be there for John. Hope changed her mind, but told him that she would bring him back if he felt weak. Carrie talked about her feelings about John at the service. John always felt like a father to her and was always there for her. She shifted gears and talked about his marriage to Marlena. There was a symbolic moment when the kids brought flowers up during the ceremony to make it part of a larger garden. Carrie wanted to recreate it for John. All the kids brought flowers up. Sami let Paul take her flower up. While Belle and Brady stood with their flowers, Marlena thought about the wedding Carrie mentioned. The kids put their flowers on the memorial. After they put the flowers down, they hugged Marlena. Brady stood up and talked about his grandfather, Timothy. Timothy couldn’t be there. He and John didn’t know each other long, but they loved each other. Brady talked about looking like John and then he did impressions of his father. Everyone laughed at his impressions. On a serious note, Brady talked about John being the greatest father ever. He was happy that John got a chance to experience meeting his father.

Marlena went to the podium. She didn’t plan to speak at the service. Marlena’s voice broke when she told everyone that she got a chance to say goodbye to John before he died. She wanted to recite a poem. Marlena talked about their love and that she would carry it with her forever. They survived so many obstacles, and she believed they would survive this too. Their love would get them through anything. Marlena told him “good night.” Eric went back to the podium to lead everyone in prayer. The ceremony halted when Bo and Hope arrived. They apologized for interrupting the funeral service. Bo wanted to pay his respects to John. He wanted to know if he could say something. Marlena gave him a hug and told him that she would love it. Bo talked to everyone about the first time he met John. He talked about the fight they had when he thought he killed someone they loved. Bo was about to fall to his death when John saved him. He talked about John’s compassion. Bo continued to talk about memories of John. He choked up when he talked about John sacrificing his life for him. John saved multiple people over the years. He wasn’t there anymore, but he would live on forever. Bo quoted John by saying “that’s a fact.” He turned to John’s picture and promised to carry him with him. Eric thanked everyone for coming to the service. He wanted everyone to join them at the Brady Pub for the celebration of John’s life. Marlena took Eric’s hand and told him that he did an amazing job. She said that John would have been proud of him. Kayla hugged Bo and yelled at him for leaving the hospital. Bo didn’t want to miss the chance to say goodbye to his brother. Hope told Bo that she and John had a special bond. She held his picture and said that she would miss everything about him. Hope looked up to him like a big brother. Chanel checked on Johnny, and he felt like a disappointment to John. She reminded him about everything he was doing to improve his life. Kate talked about how she felt about John. She didn’t know what they would do without him. Marlena went to the flowers and thought about the day John gave her lilacs. There were lilacs at the service. She wondered who sent them. Belle broke down while she talked to Shawn. He told her that he was sorry and hugged her. Kayla told Marlena that she checked everywhere but couldn’t find the gold coin. Marlena shook it off because the coin was supposed to mean that John would recover. She said that hope was gone.

At the funeral, Chanel and Tate talked about John. While they were talking, Chanel asked about the adoption. Tate said they haven’t found anyone to adopt the baby and they were running out of time. Johnny let Marlena know that he was live streaming the funeral for people who couldn’t make it. Marlena asked him how things were with his father. Johnny said he didn’t want to talk about it. Abe and Steve talked about John and how he was always there for them. Eric let everyone know it was time to start, but Rachel wasn’t ready to say goodbye. Marlena gave her John’s Mickey Mantle card to use whenever she missed him or felt sad. Rachel was inconsolable so Brady offered to take her home. Tate and Arianna offered to take Rachel. Brady went to the front row with Marlena, Belle, and Carrie. Eric said a prayer about John. Roman, Kate, and Shawn joined the funeral. Everyone at the funeral sang Amazing Grace with Brady. Abe, Steve, and Shane talked about John at different stages in his life. Steve said that John final act of courage was saving a man he considered a brother. Abe said John always kept people in his circle. Shane said they would remember him as a loyal friend and hero.

Bo set up a picnic for Hope. He noticed that something was wrong with her and wanted to know what was going on. Hope told him that John died. Bo was upset that John risked his life to save him. Hope told him the funeral was that day. Bo wanted to go to the funeral, but Hope told him he needed to stay in the hospital. He told her he had to be there. When Bo went back to his hospital room, the doctor told him he couldn’t leave. Bo told the doctor that there was nothing wrong with him. She reminded him that he was still recovering. When the doctor left the room, Bo begged Hope to let him go to the funeral. Hope said she couldn’t risk losing him again. She wanted him to listen to his doctors. Kayla and Roman spoke about John. Roman mentioned how John handled the switch when he came back to Salem. He wondered if he ever told John that he loved how he raised his children while he was away. Kayla said John was a brother in heart and was one of the best men she knew. Belle spoke about John. She told a story about John going to Paris to save Eric. Belle talked about John being a shoulder to cry on and how funny he was. Paul talked about John and how they bonded over baseball. After he talked about John, he told John’s portrait that he loved him and would play baseball with him soon.
