Good morning, Dr. Johnson.

Good morning, Seth. Can I do something for you?

You’ve already done it. As you know, I had, uh– initially had doubts about shooting “Body & Soul” here. And as it turns out, wow. It’s been a fun experience so far. Exciting, uplifting.

Right. Well, um, I did think it’d be a good thing for the hospital.

Oh, I wasn’t talking about the hospital. I was talking about me. I think I’ve been bitten by the acting bug.

Now, this is how I like to start my day.

Mm. Yeah, me too. You know, Chanel, I’m sorry we fought. You know, I–I– I know there’s no reason for me to be jealous of Alex.

You sure about that? [tense music]

Alex? What are you doing here?

What do you think I’m doing here, Johnny? I’m here to make mad, passionate love to your wife.

Oh, Jada, I’m so happy to hear that Rafe is home. [chuckles] Well, I am not surprised that he is not the most cooperative patient, although I have no doubt that you can keep him in line. With me and Alex? Oh, nothing to report on that front. I didn’t even see him on set yesterday. [knocking on door] Well, it’s probably for the best. Like I told you, Alex just wants to be friends, and I am totally fine with that. [soft dramatic music]

Uh, Jada was just giving me an update on Rafe. He is home from the hospital.

Really? That’s great news.

I know, right? [chuckles] So what brings you by?

I just thought maybe you’d like a latte. I grabbed one for myself, and I figured to maybe bring one by for my buddy next door– pumpkin spice.

Oh, my favorite.

Yeah.

How nice to live across the hall from a man who can anticipate my needs.

Well, I just know how much we both appreciate our morning caffeine fix, so– sorry, I’m a little sweaty. I, uh, hit the gym this morning. I was trying to, you know, get the endorphins going, trying to work off some of these nerves.

Oh. Why? Are you shooting today?

Yes, I am. Big love scene with Chanel.

Mm-hmm. So you were yelling “stop it” in your sleep. Bad dream, I assume?

Yeah, yeah.

Wanna tell me about it?

Oh, come on. [tense music]

Fine. Uh… it was about you and Alex.

Okay.

Yeah, yeah. He got into bed with us, said it was time to tape your sex scene. He started making out with you while I watched.

Oh, ugh. Johnny, I’m so sorry you had that dream. But I guess it kind of makes sense since you’re going to be directing our love scene today.

Right. And look, Chanel, I know that–that you’ve been a little upset with me for my jealousy issues. And I also know that I can’t let my own irrational feelings get in the way of me doing my job. Hey, it’s just that when I see you guys together like I did at the photo shoot, it– it brings back these images to me of you and him actually together. Like, for real.

Okay, Johnny, I keep telling you this, but this time, could you please just try and believe me, okay?

Yes.

Okay. I’m gonna tell you this one more time. And I hope that this is the last time that I have to tell you. Alex and I– there are no feelings, okay? I have no feelings for Alex. That time that he and I and Allie were together– that is in the past. And unlike you, I never think about that anymore, okay? He and I are just co-workers now and friends.

I thought we were friends, Leo. At least we were– we were “Drag Race” buddies.

We still are. In fact, I just loaded up on pork rinds for our next “Drag Race” binge.

You know what? You can forget about any of those. I’m–I’m–swearing off pork rinds. I think they’re leaving me bloated.

They are. What about jelly beans or plant-based jerky?

Ugh, yuck!

Okay, look, Hattie, I know that you’re upset.

Upset? Upset? My so-called friend writes me off the show I was starring in? That show was gonna get me a Daytime Emmy.

But I didn’t write you off. It wasn’t me.

Oh, because I thought you were the head writer.

Look, I’m just a hired gun.

Oh, that shot me in the back.

No, no, it wasn’t my call. The producers are the ones who make those decisions. Look, I would have loved for Charlemagne Delacroix to remain on the show. She is an amazing character to write. In fact, I am in full-blown mourning over her impending death.

Yeah, well, tell your problems to somebody else. I’m the one who’s kicking the bucket without any notice at all.

Okay, that was not my call, either. I wanted to tell you, Hattie. I did.

Why didn’t you?

Because–

Because… Abe and Kate were worried that if you knew about being fired, you would leave the set without finishing your scenes, and then we’d all be screwed and out of work.

Oh. Out of work, just like me. I kind of like the sound of that. [bright acoustic music]

Okay. [chuckles] Okay, maybe I went a little overboard saying you saved my life because it was actually Kassandra’s life you saved. It’s just that I feel like she’s such a part of me now, you know? And when I heard that Kassandra was buying the farm, well, Bonnie Kiriakis– she was putting down the down payment. And I know it sounds a little wackadoodle, but I swear to God, it’s the truth. It’s like Kassandra and me– we were definitely separated at birth, you know?

Yeah, right.

I read the script, and I saw that I was gonna be a goner– especially the way too. It was so creepy. It was flesh-eating disease. Ugh! But now none of that matters because my hunky son brought me that miracle cure. Thank God. [chuckles] And now Hattie’s gonna get the ax instead. Speaking of which, um– [clears throat] Now that Charlemagne is dead, I mean, um, like, all her stuff’s gonna be up for grabs, right? [light jazzy music]

Her stuff?

Well, yeah, like her clothes. Oh, and, um, her mansion. Oh, you know what? I know. Kassandra could buy Charlemagne’s mansion from her grief-stricken husband. Oh, no, better yet, I could get the grief-stricken husband. Yeah, see, he could be all sad and lonely. And then Kassandra could come along and make him realize that she was his type more so than Charlemagne ever was, or something like that. And then she would make him forget about his nasty, dead wife. And they would live happily ever after, right? It’s good, right? I know it’s good. I should pitch this to Leo, right? Right? Am I right? I’m right, right? Oh, come on, right?

Better yet, forget about Charlemagne’s sloppy seconds. I could marry Thrust. And then I would be heir to the Manning fortune, and I could run Manning Enterprises!

Okay. Just hold on, madam CEO, because you are not going to be controlling anything anytime soon. You are not going to be marrying Thrust. You are not going to be getting Charlemagne’s mansion or her gowns, which you would just turn into matching outfits for you and your Schnauzer.

But Muffy is a Shi Tzu.

Muffy is Kassandra’s off-camera dog. No one’s ever seen Muffy. No one cares what breed she is. So you, my dear, need to listen up. “Body & Soul” is an ensemble production. When Hattie didn’t respect that, we had no choice but to buy her a one-way ticket to soap opera heaven.

Well, don’t you think Charlemagne actually went to someplace a little hotter?

Either way, I’m sure she would love to have Kassandra join her there. [tense jazzy music]

Got it. [chuckles] No, really, I’m just a– I got–I mean, uh, “Body & Soul” is not a one-star vehicle. And I just, ah, went a little overboard. I’m really sorry. I’m sorry.

It’s okay, Bonnie.

[clears throat]

Just remember, now and into the future, that “Body & Soul” has no stars. We all–we all work together in harmony.

With a modicum of humility.

Oh, of course. No, I got it. I got it. I would never want to be like Hattie. I mean, she doesn’t even know the meaning of the word humility– or modicum. [chuckles] [clears throat] Actually, I don’t know the meaning of modicum either, but I’m guessing it means a little.

It does. Kind of. But I think we should aim for more than a little.

I promise. I will. [chuckles] Again, I–[stammers] Although I was thinking, you know, now that Hattie is uh, gone, I’m sure you have a little extra cash, and I thought maybe I could have a little raise. Oh, or maybe not. [chuckles] I know. It’ll be fine. So I know you guys got a lot of work to do, so I’m gonna leave you at it. And, uh, enjoy the fruit. It’s fabulous. You’re fabulous. So they wrote you in another scene for today.

Yeah, the producers were apparently impressed with my performance yesterday. I mean, who knew I was a gifted thespian, right?

Well, you are obviously a man of many talents.

Well, I won’t give up my day job just yet, but since we’re talking about my budding acting career, Kayla, if you have any influence with the BS producers, maybe you can let them know I wouldn’t be adverse to a romantic interest, maybe a love scene or two. Yeah.

So you’re shooting your love scene with Chanel today?

Mm-hmm.

I thought you were talking to Kate about putting it off.

Yeah. And we did talk to her, but apparently there’s been too many actors asking for so many script changes that now Kate is afraid to ask Leo to do any more rewrites. So unfortunately, the scene cannot be postponed. And it’s a go.

Hmm. You must be disappointed.

I am disappointed. I mean, like I said, it’s just happening too soon. Faith and Arrow’s character shouldn’t be sleeping together this fast. It’s like rushing the whole story, you know?

Yeah. No, I get why you think that.

Yeah.

Well, how do you feel playing opposite Chanel in general? I mean, since you two don’t seem to get along, right?

Uh, actually, it’s not that much of an issue anymore. Chanel and I–we just decided to call a truce. And we thought that it would be best if now that we’re working together, we, you know, just try and start fresh.

Well, that’s very mature of you.

I know. Thank you.

Yeah. [laughs]

Thank you. And now that this whole huge love scene is happening today, I’m just praying that we can get through it without any problems.

Well, I’m sure you’ll be fine, since, obviously, you and Chanel have worked things out.

Yeah.

But how does Johnny feel about all this? [tense music]

I–I thought you and Alex couldn’t stand each other. Now all of a sudden, you’re friends?

Okay, what’s so shocking about that? I mean, we obviously have to work together, so we decided that it would make things a little less awkward if we just got along.

Okay. Okay. Yeah, you know what? You’re right. You’re right. The less backstage drama, the better.

Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah, there’s gonna be enough drama on screen.

Right.

Mm-hmm.

You know what? Speaking of which, we should probably get a move on. I don’t want to be late for rehearsals.

Yeah, yeah. I got to run, too, because Alex and I are gonna run those hospital scenes before we get started.

Hospital scenes? I thought–I thought all the hospital scenes were between, uh, Alex– I mean, uh, Arrow and his mom.

Yeah, it starts with the mom in the bed. And then Faith and Arrow end up–

Oh, no, right. Yep, yep, got it. How could I forget? Um, well, that’s great. I–I need to get to set anyway because we’re shooting Charlemagne’s death scenes first, which I have a feeling is going to be a little tricky.

[chuckles]

The way I see it, Leo, is that you are an accomplice after the fact of getting my character killed off.

What? How’s that?

How’s that? You know exactly how that is. Look, I’m just feeling kind of tricked and duped, you know, because I thought–you know, when I read the script, I thought that Bonnie was the one being killed off.

That’s because I thought it would be more of a shock to the audience. And we both know that shocking the audience equals a rise in ratings if they thought that Kassandra was not long for the world, only to have Charlemagne give up the ghost instead.

Well, that’s very clever of you and very hurtful, Leo. I mean, you killed me off before I even had a chance to have a week under contract. And, I mean, I was– I was kind of thinking that maybe I would– I would get a Daytime Emmy nomination, at least have a fan club started. You– Do you know how that makes me feel? [sobs]

I’m really sorry, Hattie. I am. I hate that things turned out this way. But, um– look on the bright side.

The bright side? You mean that I don’t have a job, and I’m a loser?

Oh, come on. Don’t talk like that. You are a winner, Hattie. You’re a total babe. You are charming and spirited. And even when you are bloated on pork rinds, you manage to be a whole lot of fun.

Well, right–right now, what I am is– I’m a whole lot of miffed.

I get that. Believe me, I do. But to quote the sagacious Roman Brady, “It is called show business, not show friendship.” So even though we’re not gonna be working together anymore, I really hope we can still hang out.

Let me think. No. No. I don’t want to watch the drag show with you anymore. And I don’t want to eat pork rinds with you anymore. I just–I just– I want–if you see me coming down the street, I want you to go the other way. Because if you don’t, Leo, I. Will. End. You. [scoffs] [bright acoustic music]

Hey, I’m hoping Johnny will be cool with, you know, directing my love scene with Chanel. And I even suggested to the guy that if he feels uncomfortable, maybe we could hire another director to shoot just those scenes.

And he didn’t go for that idea?

No, no. He wants to prove that he’s Mr. Professional.

Right. Well, good for him. And I hope it all works out.

Yeah, fingers crossed. Anyway, I should probably go get cleaned up. I really don’t wanna make Chanel work too hard at trying to act like she’s attracted to me.

We certainly wouldn’t want that. [chuckles]

Hey, do you want a ride to set?

No, you don’t have to do that.

Oh, consider it a thank-you for the latte.

All right, then. Fair enough. I’ll be back in a little bit. I really do need a shower.

Yeah. [chuckles] I could use a cold shower myself. Hmm.

Hey, Leo. I’m glad you’re here. I was just reading over your long story. And unfortunately, we don’t have the budget for a shark tank. We’re gonna have to scale down. How do you feel about goldfish bowl?

That’s fine. [tense music]

I was expecting a fight. Something wrong?

I’m just hating on myself, feeling like a bad friend and a rotten, insubstantial person in general, confirming everything my mother thinks about me, even though she’s all of those things, which is probably why I’m this way since she passed down half of her putrid DNA to me.

Okay, do you think you could just possibly tell me what you’re upset about?

I ran into Hattie. She blames me for killing her off, even though I said it was your and Abe’s idea.

Oh. Well, thanks for that.

And I get the feeling that Hattie has a PhD in grudge holding. And she can be spiteful and vindictive. Well, it’s more than a feeling. Her last words to me were, “You better watch out because I will get you.”

Whoa. [chuckles] Well, I’m sure at some point she’ll calm down.

Yeah, maybe when we’re all killed off in real life, like at the turn of the nd century.

Oh, come on. Really? It’ll be sooner than that. I’ll tell you what. They are about to tape the death scene as we speak. Do you wanna watch it on the monitor?

[sighs] No, I’m too verklempt to even think about it.

Okay, everyone, we are shooting item today. Abe, I wasn’t expecting to see you on set today.

Yeah, well, you know, I thought it would be best to have one of the producers here on set for Hattie’s death scene.

Hmm.

Just in case.

Right. Yeah, good call.

Okay. Can I please get background set, and I need a Dr. Lamoray.

Blake Lamoray, M.D., at your service.

Fantastic. You’re gonna be over there. And, Kassandra, you are also gonna be over there. Now, we just need a Charlemagne. [ominous music] Charlemagne? Charlemagne?

[winces]

Chanel. Chanel, are you all right?

Uh, no, not really. I think I threw my back out.

Oh, well, here, let me check it out. Oh, dear.

[winces]

What happened?

Uh, I was, um– I came over to go to the hospital with Johnny. And when we got there, I was supposed to rehearse with Alex, but I had a little bit of time, so I decided to stop by Sweet Bits and check in.

Well, did you lift anything heavy?

No, I wish. Then I’d feel a little less stupid. I was cutting through the park on my way back to the hospital. And I bent down to tie my shoe. And then I just– I felt this nasty twinge in my back.

I don’t think it’s anything serious. I think you might have pulled a muscle.

Ah. That’s good because I have to get to set. I have a big scene with Alex. [groans]

You know what? I think what you need to do is rest a little bit, okay? Last I checked, you have some time before the scene, okay? [suspenseful jazz music]

Thanks for giving me a ride. Now I can get in that extra rehearsal time with Chanel.

Not a problem. And I will go check and see what they’re shooting now.

All right. I’ll see you. Oh, damn. [sighs]

Chanel’s running late. Damn it. Oh, my God, I just wanted to run through our scenes a few times. That way, I was off book before blocking, you know? I don’t suppose you’d wanna run some lines with me?

Uh, sure. I mean, production probably doesn’t need me right this minute, so yeah. I, um–I don’t have a script, though.

That’s all right. Take mine. I’m supposed to have these all memorized by now, anyway.

Um, okay, so start–

You’re gonna start right here where Faith says–

“Oh, Arrow, I just heard the news about your mother.”

Yeah.

Mm-hmm. Okay.

All right, let’s do this.

Hey, have either of you seen Hattie Adams?

No.

Mm-mm.

Could Hattie have just left?

No idea.

Talk about unprofessional.

Okay, Hattie’s not in her dressing room, and no one in the green room has seen her either.

Well, that’s just what I was afraid of. So how are we going to shoot Hattie’s death without Hattie?

Did I hear my name? Geez, this place is like a maze. Anybody ever thought that maybe they could– they could paint each floor a different color?

Yeah, we’ll take that under advisement.

Okay, great. Everyone, we have our Charlemagne. So let’s–let’s–let’s go. [soft tense music]

Would you stop looking at me like that? For Pete sakes, it’s not like I asked them to kill you off. Not that you weren’t thrilled that they were willing to kill off Kassandra in a miserable death so you could be the star of the show.

Can we can just get this show going, please?

You know, these scenes that they’re shooting today were really, really well written, Leo.

[sighs] Yeah. Well, as horrible as Hattie feels about being written off and as rotten as I feel that she now hates me with a vengeance, at least she’s going out with a bang.

Yeah, pretty dramatic exit.

It sure is. And I would love to take credit for the idea, but I can’t. See, I knew that I had to come up with a fitting ending for one of Pineview’s leading ladies, but we’re so pressed for time that I remembered how they got rid of a very memorable character on “L.A. Law.” [intriguing music]

And…action.

I must say, then, in all the years of wishing each other dead… I do–I do celebrate your survival.

You and me both. And I must say that I do admire your generosity of spirit, Charlemagne, but even more so the medical prowess of Dr. Lamoray here, who administered the miracle serum that saved my life.

Today, we’ve all witnessed a miracle.

Yes, of course, we all agree with that. I was wondering–since you’ve been fortunate enough to have a second chance, I was wondering if perhaps you and I could have a second chance.

What are you saying, Charlemagne?

Well, I’m wondering, Kassandra, if you and I could wipe the slate clean.

Well, I think that’s a brilliant idea. Truce? Truce?

Truce.

Uh, okay, Hattie. Go ahead and press the button to the elevator now.

So there was this character in “L.A. Law.” Her name was Rosalind Shays. And she’s just, you know, standing there and talking to Leland, turns to get on the elevator, and splat.

Whoa.

Yeah, that was the end of that. [ominous music] [elevator dings]

Okay, Hattie, now you–you turn. You wave to Kassandra and step in. Hattie, go on. Step into the elevator.

Any better?

Not really. But I don’t wanna hold up production, so I need to get to the hospital.

I agree. But not to the set. I am taking you to the ER.

What about my scenes with Alex?

They can wait. Come on, doctor’s orders. Let’s go. Nice and easy. Nice and easy.

[sighs]

Okay. Okay. [soft dramatic music]

All right, Steph, that’s your cue.

Arrow, I just heard the news about your mother. Oh, no. Am I too late? Is Kassandra…dead?

No. My mother is right down the hall right now getting a life-saving serum made from a begonia that I found in the jungles of Iguaza.

What?

Against all odds, I brought back a flower that can cure my mother’s disease and save her life.

Oh, Arrow, how heroic, how brave.

It’s a miracle. I thought I was gonna lose my precious mother, but she’s gonna live, Faith.

Oh, thank God.

And all this has just made me realize… life is short. [sultry music] Our time here on Earth is precious.

What are you saying, Arrow?

I’m saying that if you’ve found the person that you love, you mustn’t squander… a single second of that precious time.

Wow. [panting] This is gonna be some love scene, huh?

Yeah, it is.

[moans]

Hattie, you need to get onto the elevator.

I can’t.

Why not?

Well, there’s–there’s no– there’s no elevator there to get onto.

Yeah, that’s the point. You’re supposed to fall down the shaft.

Well, that’s easy for you to say. I’m the one taking the great leap into the beyond.

Hattie, it’s perfectly safe. It’s only three feet deep. And you have an air mattress to fall on. Two, two. [soft dramatic music]

That’s not it.

What is it?

I’d–it’s just– it’s just that I don’t– I don’t wanna die.

An elevator shaft. I thought I remembered that.

Yeah, I’m not the first person to pay homage to that scene. In the ‘s, there was a sitcom. I can’t remember the name of it. Anyway, there was an actor on that show, and he didn’t want to get on the elevator because he knew he was being killed off, just like Hattie.

But come on, Hattie, you can do this, okay? You’re a professional actor.

Yes. Yes, I am. I–I am a professional actor.

Okay, then. So let’s just, uh–we’ll take it back from the handshake and maybe try it this time a little less gripping, okay?

[clears throat] Okay. And action.

Kassandra, why don’t you come with me?

What?

Come with me. I–I’d like to buy you a drink, or two, or three to celebrate our truce.

I’m on an IV. [elevator dings]

Doctor, maybe you should get that elevator because I–I think I heard them paging you to go down one floor.

Um, I’m not gonna do that. I’m gonna stay here and monitor Ms. Lovegood’s vitals. That elevator is just for you.

Okay, Hattie, get on now. Hattie, that’s your cue.

No. No. I–I won’t do it.

Cut. Let’s go again.

No, we’re not going again. I’m not doing that again. Look, you can kill off my character if that’s what you wanna do. I can’t stop you from doing that. But my God, I will not help you do it.

[bright acoustic music]

Bonnie, how’d it go on set today? Did Hattie take the plunge?

No, she refused to do the stunt.

Oh, no. Well, if she didn’t go down the elevator shaft, how did they end the scene?

They didn’t. They had to end early. See, that moody diva just stormed off the set in a huff. Mm-hmm.

So Hattie just stormed off the set, huh?

Afraid so.

So what are we gonna do?

There they are, my two favorite backstabbers.

Okay, if you’re here for your paycheck, people who break their contract do not get paid.

Why don’t you keep your money? I don’t want anything from you two traitors. In fact, I think I’m gonna blow this one-horse town.

Oh, Hattie.

Really? Really? You’re gonna regret the day you crossed me. [scoffs] I’m gonna make sure you pay for it. I’m gonna make sure that you are–that you are cursed.

Oh, come off it.

And everything that comes along with this production, from the–from the offices to the cast, and the staff, and the crew. Yeah. In fact, I think I’ll even make sure that Pineview goes up in flames. [soft dramatic music]

[groaning] First day of shooting, and it’s like we’re cursed. I think I’m doing better now, though. Could–could you please help me over to the hospital room set?

No one would expect you to do your scenes in this condition. I’m gonna call Abe and Kate and let them know that you’re gonna call in sick.

What? No.

Yes, I’m gonna give you an anti-inflammatory. You’ll be much better by tomorrow.

But my scene with Alex.

Well, it’s gonna have to wait. I’m sorry. There’s gonna be no love scene today.

Well, Arrow and Faith– they got a little carried away.

What do you mean?

I poked my head in there a little while ago. And at first, I thought, oh, they’re rehearsing. But then I realized they were… [tense music] In a steamy love scene for real.

Yeah, and I feel really terrible because I knew about it before she did, obviously, but was instructed that I couldn’t say a word until after she had shot her last scenes with Bonnie because Abe and Kate were concerned that if she knew about it beforehand, she might have a hissy fit and storm off the set.

Yeah, well, knowing Hattie, I’m pretty sure she would.

Yeah, probably. But still, I consider Hattie a friend. I hate that she was blindsided like this.

Yeah, well, that’s why they call it show business and not show friendship, right?

Yeah. I know. Still, I just– I feel like such a heel. You know when you try to justify an awful lie for a good reason? But it’s still a lie and doesn’t make you feel any better about it in the end.

Right, so what you’re saying is, once this story of your passionate liaison with my wife is in print, the whole idea of you keeping Nicole from raising her child, that’s gonna be considered, what, fake news?

Anybody could talk to the children. Wouldn’t it be better for them to have the news from their father that their mother’s alive?

Why? Because from what I understand, Brady didn’t even know Fiona was your mother when they first met.

Right. After he figured it out, he kept seeing her, probably just to stick it to me.

Stop it. Now, Xander, you’re the one obsessing over Brady. It’s not the other way around. I think it’s high time that you focused more time on being with your wife and less time on getting back at Brady.

No, I–I agree %. I mean, Kristen–Kristen would just make my situation worse. Although, I’ll be honest with you.

[sighs] I’d much rather her be fighting with me than against me.

I do understand that. I mean, the two of you have been involved in some incredible fights over Rachel.

Which may be coming to an end, finally. Not just because I might be going to prison, but because Kristen said she’s willing to revisit our custody arrangement.

You know what really gets me is– is how Holly is so completely in the wrong, and she blames everybody else, including you.

Well, she and I haven’t been getting along for a while now, so sort of an easy scapegoat.

Yeah, it’s just not right. I mean, she’s way out of line. And, I mean, all you did is you called her out for– for using me, right? My God, for her to hit you?

Well, I don’t have to steal Tate from you, Holly. You’re handing him over gift-wrapped just by being the same broken, hot mess you’ve been since we were kids. And not just a hot mess, but obviously sexually repressed.

Shut the hell up right now.

I’m just saying, you not putting out for the guy is kind of an advantage for me since he’s raring to go, and I can’t wait to get him into bed and to satisfy him like you refuse to. Although, I’m guessing even if you did put out, you wouldn’t be able to satisfy him like I can. Like I will. I have to be honest, Tate. Holly didn’t hit me because I called her out. She hit me because I admitted I have feelings for you.

[sighs] Maybe you’re right, Maggie. I just– I just don’t know how to help her. She–she’s always putting on such a strong front, insisting everything’s fine, but it’s–it’s not. She is not fine. I hear her crying when she thinks I’m not around, and I saw how sad she looked when she couldn’t chase after Victoria at her birthday party. It just– it makes me feel so damn helpless, watching her suffer like this. I can’t help Sarah regain the use of her legs, but I can help her get justice.

Well, now that Brady is facing judgment and you’re going to get your justice, Xander, it’s time. It’s time to let it go. For your sake and for Sarah’s sake.

 

[scoffs] Why do I feel like I should be lying on the couch in your office?

It has incredible regenerative properties, far beyond what we can currently do with stem cells. For instance, you could regenerate a failed organ or regrow dying tissue. Essentially, just about any damage to the human body can be reversed!

What about a spinal cord injury?

Sorry. I’ve made this all about me, which I didn’t want to do. It’s just after what Holly did to you, I want everything to be out in the open between us, Tate. No deception.

And so is applying to college, which, by the way, my mom’s not here to help me with either.

Then give her a chance to explain, a chance to tell you why she came to that decision. Don’t you think you owe her that much?

Brady, as far as you going to prison, that’s not a foregone conclusion. Justin’s a very good attorney. He–he may be able to pull off a miracle.

Marlena, we’ve been over this. I’m not looking for a miracle.

I know you think you deserve to be punished. Darling, please, let Justin do his job.

I am. I am letting him do it, out of deference to Dad. OK, if it wasn’t for him, I would just assume– just–just get this whole damn thing over with. I–

[laughs] I’m responsible for Sarah being in that wheelchair, probably for the rest of her life, OK? It’s my fault that she has pain and she has suffering, and I am willing to– no, I’m not willing. I need to take responsibility for it.

I hear you, Maggie. And look, I haven’t only been sitting around thinking of ways to punish Brady. I’ve also been looking into specialists. I’m trying to find anyone that can help Sarah walk again.

And what have you found?

So far, everyone agrees with Sarah’s current doctors. And they’ve admitted that things aren’t looking promising.

Well, then I guess it’s time for us to face reality…

[sighs] That Sarah’s paralysis is most likely permanent.

The serum wasn’t specifically created for spinal cord injury. Though I suppose it’s not out of the realm of possibilities that it could be used thusly, given some re-engineering, that is. Why do you ask?

Because Brady is currently facing prison time for a hit and run. And Sarah Kiriakis, she’s paralyzed and may never walk again.

I see. Well, I’d have to take a look at her charts to determine if the serum would be appropriate for her particular case.

But in theory, it is possible that the serum may get Sarah back on her feet again?

Yes. Yes, I believe it– possible.

 

[sighs]

Well, then, Rolf, you need to get working on this right away. I’m going to get you a lab. You’re going to revise the serum. Oh, my God. I mean, if Sarah starts to walk again–

Kristen, I know you spent a lot of time with Sarah on this island when she thought she was your dead sister. But I hadn’t realized you cared so much for her.

Oh, believe me, I don’t.

Then there must be some ulterior motive here, huh? Something perhaps to do with–

I have my reasons, Rolf. And if you want your funding, you want your lab, you want the glory of the scientific breakthrough, then you’ll leave it at that.

[suspenseful music]

Nor am I. But if it turns out that Sarah’s condition is permanent, we mustn’t forget that Sarah can still have a full and productive life.

Of course.

And she will. That’s if you and Victoria are in her corner. Right?

Yes, I’ll focus all my attention on my wife, and I will stop obsessing about Brady Black.

You know that Eric felt the same way you do. After what happened to Daniel, he was– he was tormented by it. But he found there are other ways to atone for mistakes besides going to jail.

I get that. And I’m glad that Eric has found a way to make peace with the fact that he took a life. I guess I’m luckier. My situation is better because Sarah is still alive. But, Marlena, unlike Eric, I am– I’m not there. I am not ready to make peace with what I did.

I hope in time you will. Please know that I am always, always here for you.

I’m telling you the truth. I swear to God. Something knocked me out, Tate. It wasn’t alcohol. It might have been a bug. It might have been– I don’t know what it was, but here’s what I understand. Well, it’s just that I heard you and Xander talking yesterday in the bedroom. I wasn’t eavesdropping. I just happened to be passing by. And you were telling Xander how you had lied to the police.

I just– I think that EJ put Holly up to going after you. They’ve been acting all buddy-buddy ever since Holly found out that Eric killed her father. And God, I just– I wish that I hadn’t told her that. Like–

Look, there is no way– there’s no– son, there’s no way that you could have known that she didn’t already know. Okay? Furthermore, you are not to blame for any of this. Your uncle Eric and I made horrific mistakes. Her Aunt Sarah is in a wheelchair because of me. And she doesn’t have a father because of him, while my brother did. I think EJ is using her anger as a weapon against me. So I don’t want you to be too hard on Holly. Tate, I know both of you are angry right now, but in the end, I think you’re going to need her as much as she needs you.

[sighs] I don’t get it, Seth. Last time we spoke, you were excited about the prospect of this.

And I was until I ran the numbers. Kayla, the legal and insurance liabilities of shooting a TV show here– prohibitively expensive.

But it isn’t. Did–did you even read the whole proposal?

Most of it, but–

No, I don’t think you did. Because right here– look, right here it says that the show has their own liability insurance and that we are covered anytime they shoot here. I mean, it’s not even an expense that we need to consider.

Okay, point taken. But I haven’t even gotten started about what a disruption it would be to our operation.

No, no, no, it wouldn’t– okay, okay. I know I saw it here. Let me see. It’s, um–here it is, the third page. Um, “The show will be shot on the fifth-floor wing “where there is just completely vacant, and the patient consensus shows that.” So that means there will be virtually no crossover between fiction and reality. Our patients won’t even know what’s going on up there. And if somebody happens to find out, they’ll probably get a big kick out of it.

Yes, but–

No, no, no. And do I need to remind you about the city giving us subsidy credits? So, you know, all in all, it is gonna pay for itself and then some.

On paper, maybe.

No, no. Come on. You said that we need to come up with some innovative budget solutions. And like all the hospitals in the country, we have been running at a deficit. So this might be our answer. “Body & Soul” might just save us.

[mysterious music]

Okay. Well, I mean, it wasn’t exactly phrased as an ultimatum, but they’re balking at doing their sex scenes. In their opinion, the characters wouldn’t be doing that so soon. I mean–and I could see there’s some merit to that argument, but there’s no way I’m gonna ask Leo to do more rewrites. He has too much on his plate already. So do we all.

I-I-I agree. I agree. You know, speaking of that, what’s the situation at the hospital?

Well, I just got a text from Kayla, and she’s following up with Seth Burns as we speak.

My first thought when you came to me with this was how much free publicity we’d get for the hospital. But then I watched the show, and it occurred to me that “Body & Soul” won’t exactly portray us in the best light a lot of the time.

But University Hospital will never even be mentioned. As far as the viewers are concerned, this will be Pineview Hospital.

I see.

And there will be no bad publicity at all.

Right.

What other objections could you have?

None. I suppose…

So… I changed my mind. They can shoot their soap opera here.

[sighs] Damn. I mean, uh…

[clears throat] It’s just, I would’ve thought that if we all three had an issue with it, they would have at least considered a rewrite.

Yeah, no. You would definitely think so. And, bro, I get it. I mean, it’s gotta be an even bigger problem for you than it is for Chanel and me, right?

Did I say that? What I said was, I agree that it’s too soon for the Faith-Arrow sex scene, or love scene. All right, whatever you wanna call it. It’s just not good for the show. That’s it.

You’d think it would be somewhat awkward, but it isn’t. Our relationship is completely behind us. We’re just friends now, and that’s the way we wanna keep it.

Why are you looking at me like I just grew two heads then, Johnny? Because it seems like a pretty basic thing to me. If you’re not comfortable being on set while Chanel and I are shooting a sex scene, or a love scene, whatever it may be, maybe we just get another director to fill in.

Another direct– are you suggesting that I quit?

Uh, absolutely not. Of course not. I’m suggesting that maybe for those particular scenes, we have somebody else do them, and then you come back to do the rest of them.

Well, thank you, Alex. That’s a brilliant idea. But I’m not gonna go to Kate and Abe and tell them that I’m not capable of directing a love scene with my wife.

And how were they received?

Tears, legal threats, enough theatrics to put anything I write to shame. In other words, what we’d expect. But at least bloodshed was avoided, though just barely.

Well, unfortunately, one of them had to go. Now we just have to get through those scenes.

Oh, Justin, look.

[sighs] No, I’m not upset with you. I know you would have made it happen if you possibly could. No, I do.

Couldn’t help but overhear. No–no lawsuit, huh?

Not that it’s any of your business, but no. As per my contract, the producers can let me go at any time. They just have to pay what’s left of my guarantee. Okay?

Well, look at the bright side of that. That means you– you get paid for weeks, and you don’t even have to go to work.

No, that means I don’t have to hang around with you anymore. And you know what, Hattie? I was really looking forward to working with you. I thought it was gonna be more fun than a barrel of monkeys. You and me starring on a soap opera? I pictured us having a whole lot of laughs, just like we did back in the old days, you know?

[laughs sadly] You and me, we were gonna be a team, just like when we replaced Marlena and Adrienne, except this time, no one was gonna get hurt.

But it was exactly the opposite of what I pictured. No fun, no laughs, and no teamwork. And this time, someone did get hurt. Bad. Real bad.

Yeah. I’m sure they were. Well, congratulations, Seth. You’ve booked it. Now I’m gonna go find the actor who was originally hired to play the role and let him know that he’s been replaced as Dr. Lamoray.

Well, you’re the one who said that Pineview wasn’t big enough for the two of you, and, well, ultimately, Kate and I agreed.

Yeah, yeah, but I-I-I just read the new scenes and– oof. Ooh, yikes. What a way to go!

I thought they liked my acting. Johnny, I was so excited. I mean, I worked for hours on my script, and I was so proud to be a part of “Body & Soul.”

I know, right? Trying not to take it personally. But, uh, seriously, Alex is still getting over Theresa. I’m still getting over Everett. And he doesn’t want to do anything that could ruin our friendship again.

Right. And how do you feel about that?

And honestly, I don’t wanna ruin my friendship with Alex either. It’s just, I’ve been having some… thoughts.

Thoughts or “Thoughts”?

Well, it doesn’t matter, because Alex is obviously not in the same place, which is probably– definitely for the best. I mean, I just–what I need to do is take a break from relationships in general. I mean, I told myself that after Chad and I broke up, and then I started spending time with Everett and– oh, God. I’m–I’m going on and on, keeping you from running the police department.

Oh, no, it’s fine. Listen, I’m on break right now, okay? And I am here for you, Steph, whenever you need to talk.

Look, Alex, I admit that I have been a bit hostile and belligerent even, making you feel bad for what happened with Allie, which really wasn’t your fault. Okay, she and I, we weren’t meant to be, obviously. And, uh, look, what I’m trying to say is that I can use one less stressor in my life. So I say, why don’t we just, uh, try and see the best in each other and get along?

I am all for that. Trust me. Let’s just hope that our on-screen chemistry doesn’t fizzle out now that we’re not snipping at each other in real life.

Yeah. Well, you remember I told you Roman talked to Kayla about using the hospital for a set? She is absolutely on the case.

Oh, great. That’s great. That’s great. Um, you know, before we get over to the set, I have some not-so-good news.

One of our lead actors is causing problems. So we have to come up with a solution, soon.

[mysterious jazz music]

Bonnie, in spite of taking the highest recommended dose of melatonin and practically OD’ing on valerian tea–

Where are they?

I was gonna say, I didn’t sleep a wink last night, so this isn’t a good time.

Ugh. Where are they?

Not who. What? Where are the pink pages I asked for?

I thought you wanted me to un-pink the original pink pages.

I did. So– so what do you call them?

Well, they’re still pink pages.

Hmm. Confusing. Anyway, I need them right now because there’s no way I’m doing those new Hattie scenes.

Look, there are no new pink pages, only the old pink pages.

What? Why?

Well, because, look, as much as I want my wonderful actors to feel creatively fulfilled and inspired to give their best performances, and more importantly, to leave me be so I can get on with writing the damn show, I didn’t change any of the Hattie scenes– not a one.

[chuckles]

Hey, Roman. Boy, isn’t this excitin’? I mean, look at this. You got–you got lights everywhere. You got–you got cameras. Wow. We’re gonna be doing a-a real television show right here in the pub.

Definitely something I could never have predicted.

Yeah. Well, I guess you can scratch this off your bucket list, huh? ‘Cause we are gonna be putting on a real live soap opera!

[bright funky music]

[soft orchestration] announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “Days of Our Lives.”

You didn’t make any of the changes I asked for?

Um, did I not just tell you that I didn’t? So I would suggest being professional, Ms. Kiriakis. Learn the part as written, and think about how lucky you are to be a working actor.

 

[laughs mockingly] You must think I’m a real idiot.

What does that have to do with anything?

Hattie gotta you, didn’t she? Your little “Drag Race” buddy, she whispered sweet somethings into your ear and convinced you not to make those changes.

That’s not what happened.

Oh, no?

No. Hattie had nothing to do with this.

Mm-hmm.

Abe Carver, our executive producer, is the one who told me not to make the changes. And since he is not only my boss but also the husband of the mayor and the man who signs my paychecks, I do defer to him on all matters related to both “Body & Soul.”

 

[scoffs] Yeah, right. But not in all matters related to one Hattie Adams. And let me tell you this– that doesn’t work for me, Mr. Head Writer.

Well, you know that Bonnie is not Hattie’s favorite person.

Well, apparently, the feeling is mutual. You should have seen the two of them when they discovered they picked the same dress. I mean, for a minute, I thought I wasn’t producing “Body & Soul.” I was producing “Crazy Ladies of the Wrestling World.”

 

[chuckles] Well, you know, I did run into Hattie afterwards. And, uh… she gave me an ultimatum. Either Bonnie goes or she goes.

Oh, no. Yeah, I was afraid that was gonna happen. So, I mean, any thoughts about that?

I have no doubts that Hattie was serious. So we have no choice but to lose one or the other.

[pensive music]

So what is it you need to talk to Abe and Kate about?

Ah. Well, last night, Chanel and I got our new pages for the scenes that we’re shooting together this week, including Faith and Arrow’s first sex scene.

And what’s the problem?

The problem is, they’re shooting the first sex scene the first week of the show. It doesn’t even make sense. I mean, Faith and Arrow are supposed to be, like, star-crossed lovers, right?

Yeah, yeah, from what I understand.

Okay, meaning that it has to seem like at first they hate each other and that everything is getting in their way of finally sleeping together.

Enemies to lovers– classic trope.

Exactly. So if it just happens right away, where’s the anticipation? You know, I mean, if they are already together, who’s gonna wanna keep watching?

You–you make an excellent point.

Hmm.

Have you talked to Chanel about it?

Yes, I have. And she actually agrees with me, for once.

And then Johnny has the nerve to suggest that I actually enjoyed putting my hands all over Alex during the photo shoot. And, Mama, that was just so insulting to me.

Obviously.

Yeah. And you know what else he said?

I have a feeling you’re going to tell me.

He said that he bet that it reminded me of the night that Alex and I had spent together.

Oh, Lord.

 

[sighs] And on top of all of that, he was all freaked out because Alex and I said that we wanted to wait to talk to Kate about not doing the sex scene. And he thought it was because I had changed my mind.

He thought you wanted to do the sex scene?

He said that he thinks that pretending to have sex with Alex for me would be, like, the next best thing to actually doing it. Well, tho–those weren’t his exact words. But still, Mama, he doesn’t trust me. And that’s just hurtful, you know? Uh, and–and why aren’t you saying anything?

Because–no. While I don’t like hearing that Johnny doesn’t trust you, I-I get why he’s jealous. And I sure as hell don’t blame him.

Do you really think it’s possible that Hattie will quit if we don’t fire Bonnie? I mean, isn’t it possible that she’s bluffing?

Well, you were there ringside for the showdown. So you think it was a bluff?

Mm, no. No, I think it was a giant headache.

Hattie is holding all the cards here. I mean, we–we have to face it. Charlemagne is the star of the show.

Is she? Or is she just your favorite character?

 

[laughs] Well, I have to admit that I do have a special place in my heart for Ms. Delacroix. But have–have you seen the research? I mean, the audiences love her.

Well, I mean, Kassandra is popular also.

Yes, yes. And the fans just love it when Charlemagne and Kassandra are sparring. But… Hattie’s threatening to quit.

So it makes more sense to fire Bonnie.

Yeah. Yeah, it does.

Right. Well, with the mess they made at the photo shoot, can imagine what they could do on the first day of taping.

 

[chuckles]

Yeah, I gotta say, Roman, place looks great. I mean, not exactly like the Pineview Pub, but–

Hattie, you do know the Pineview Pub is not real.

Yeah. I know that. I-I’m just saying that the two places look pretty different, you know.

Okay, well, this new version of “Body & Soul” is, uh, on a tight budget. That’s why I offered the use of the pub as a favor to my wife.

That was real generous of you, Roman. I’m sure they’re glad to save a few beans here and there.

It did. From what I understand, And Kate is gonna use my pub staff as extras so they’re not gonna miss any days of pay.

Well, there you go. It’s a win-win all the way around! And–and I’m getting a-a pretty big win myself, thanks to Abe.

Okay, look, I did make some changes for Hattie, but that was it. Swan song to rewrite. This is a soap opera, Bonnie. We don’t have time to keep reworking scenes. It’s not like a movie, where you have a month to shoot one scene. I heard it took them three years to make “Apocalypse Now.”

You’re kidding.

I’m not. Can you believe that? Okay. Let’s–let’s stay on topic, though. And the topic is that we are under the gun time-wise. We have to produce an entire show in one day.

Okay. I know that. I have a subscription to “Soap Opera Digest,” okay? I know how everything has to go so fast these days.

[sighs]

That’s really great. So let’s keep that in mind and not slow things down. And you may wanna get a subscription to “Soap Opera Digest” for our director.

Johnny’s complaining now too?

Oh, is he ever. I mean, has that man been living under a rock? Does he not know full well that hot young couples on soap operas fall in love, have hot, passionate sex, all while whispering schmaltzy little nothings into each other’s ears? And that is what the audience is tuning in for! Arrow, aka Alex Kiriakis, is gonna ravish Faith, aka Chanel DiMera, and Johnny DiMera is just gonna have to grin and bear it.

Mother!

“Mother!” What?

You–you don’t blame Johnny for being jealous because what? You think that I actually want to have a sex scene with him? I am a married woman.

Who had, in the not-so-distant past, a fling, if you will, with her costar.

Okay, so what?

So, well, in Johnny’s mind it’s not completely crazy if you still feel some kind of attraction to Alex and saw this as some kind of a hall-pass situation.

Okay, okay. First of all, Mama, that is not what a hall pass is. And second of all, Johnny was the one who urged me to take this job. So he, of all people, should understand that that is exactly what this is– it’s a job and nothing more.

Well, then you need to keep telling him that, because he obviously needs some reassurance.

[knocking on door]

So if both you and Chanel have a problem with the scene, sounds like to me, the best way to have it changed would be to work together.

Well, go ahead. I’m open to all options.

Okay. And–and trust me, seriously, I am not looking for a redo of the photo shoot at all.

But if we give in to Hattie’s ultimatum and fire Bonnie, I think we’re setting a dangerous precedent. We are effectively letting one actress fire another actress. How long is it gonna be before she demands creative control?

Oh, we can make it clear that this is only for the one time.

Oh, really? And what about when the other actors find out and they start making their requests?

Oh boy. Yeah. Yeah, you’re right. We can’t let that happen. And, um, we can’t let production be derailed by two angry actresses.

That’s right. We need to nip it in the bud before it all gets out of control.

Mm. Kinda like Susie Gooch in “The Blair Witch Project” after she and the rest of the group discovered the effigies of this humanoid stick figure suspended in the trees. And now that she knows it’s your idea…

Damn it. And she’s going to be waiting for me at the set.

What are you gonna tell her?

And she’s going to get new pink pages, just not the ones she thought she was getting.

Yeah. You know, I just– those feelings, they–they– they really did take me by surprise. And I’m the one who encouraged Chanel to audition for the show, and I trust her. I do. You know, I–so I really– I thought I was gonna be cool with it… all the way until I wasn’t.

 

[chuckles] Well, it is a little bit more complicated than the usual on-set situation.

You mean because of… her past with Alex?

Yes, that’s just what I mean. But, Johnny, you’re the one she chose, the one she married. So be secure in that, okay? And just be very proud of your very talented wife who adores you.

So you and Chanel talked about getting rid of the sex scene, did you?

Yes, we did. Last night at the photo shoot.

[knocking on door]

Hey, Kate. Your assistant wasn’t at her– oh. You’re here already.

Yeah.

I thought you were gonna wait for me.

Uh, well, I was. But then Kate called me in.

Then you decided to handle it on your own.

Well, Alex was telling me how both of you decided that the love scene was happening too soon.

Kate and I feel this is the best solution, so you’ll just have to get to work on those new pink pages.

If you say so, boss, but I feel like I need to remind you, once you hand out those pages, there is no going back.

I-I-I got it, Leo. I’ve got it. This is the hand we’ve been dealt. So we’ll just have to play it.

She’s the one being unprofessional, acting all better than everyone.

Yeah. You know what? Soon as she got the job, she ran around telling everybody that she’s a– she’s a diva. She’s the best actress that ever lived. What a–

Well, I bet I am better. I’m sure all you’re gonna do is mug it up and chew the scenery.

Okay, stop. Stop right now. Do you realize how foolish you’re being?

Okay, take a breath. Take a breath, both of you. Okay, do you know how lucky you are? You’re the leads on a TV show. Do you know how many people, how many struggling actors, would give anything to be in your position? Do you know that? And do you know how hard Kate and Abe worked to rescue this show, not to mention all the dedicated writers, directors, cast, and crew?

Yeah, they’re the heroes.

Yes, they are. Yes, they are. And if you keep this up, you’re gonna risk derailing this entire project.

I’m telling you both, ’cause you both need to stop these ultimatums.

But she’s the one who keeps making the ulti–

Mm, well, I would normally chew you out for letting me down, but since it is my husband’s TV show, I suppose I can give you a pass.

It’s been a lot more complicated than I thought it would be.

[laughs] How’s Abe doing?

Oh, no, Abraham? Oh, he’s fine. He’s fine. It’s just that this morning, I refereed my daughter and son-in-law’s argument over some steamy, steamy love scene.

Oh, that. Yeah, I got an earful from Alex about it too.

Oh. Do tell. Well, what is his take?

Well, he doesn’t wanna do it. In fact, he was heading over to Kate’s this morning to talk to her about it. Hopefully, he and Chanel can work something out.

“It doesn’t mean we can just go on as if nothing has changed because…”

Hey. both: Hey.

So did you guys talk to Kate?

We did.

And we explained that we didn’t wanna do the love scene. We believe that it’s just happening too soon for our characters.

Okay, great. So it’s off?

No, uh, she said that our arguing just reminded her of how sparks fly whenever we’re together, and so it’s still on.

Ah, this is perfect timing. I already put out the first fire of the day. Now I’m headed over to the set.

So did you, um, talk to Leo?

I did. I did.

How’d that go?

He was surprised, but there was no pushback. And he’s making the changes we requested.

Good. So it’s done?

Yep, it is. So Bonnie is getting her pink pages as we speak.

All right. I tried. Don’t kill each other in my restaurant. The paperwork would be a nightmare.

Leo, you’re here.

Oh, did you decide to un-pink those pages?

Well, like I told you, it isn’t up to me. But I did have a meeting with Abe, and I do have new pink pages for you.

New pages.

So glad you all decided to come to your senses.

I’m not sure you’ll feel that way after you read them, but please don’t shoot the messenger or even hate him, because this particular messenger, aka the head writer, is a people pleaser and hates being hated, even though you’d never know it from his behavior, at times anyway.
