Kristen goes to see Brady and says she wanted to see him in person to give him a card.

Alex goes to the DiMera Enterpirses office and pulls out Stephanie’s manuscript from his briefcase and continues to read her novel until Philip walks in and questions what he’s reading. Alex claims it’s just a report that Xander wanted him to take a look at. Philip asks if it has anything to do with Titan-DiMera making a play for University Hospital.

At the Brady Pub, Kate finishes going over the rules of working there with Doug III on his first day. Kate goes over the policy of what to do in case of a robbery and notes that Roman does keep a gun behind the bar but he’s the only one licensed to use it and he keeps it in a lockbox. Kate then goes behind the bar but finds the lockbox is missing.

In the town square, Johnny questions Chanel really thinking he’s capable of shooting his own father. Chanel doesn’t want to think that but brings up how he’s been acting and how many times he’s said he wished EJ was dead. Johnny assures he meant every word and now EJ knows that he wished he had died.

Philip asks Alex why Xander is selling off valuable assets to buy a flailing hospital. Alex think that’s a conversation he should have with Xander. Philip points out the last time he talked to Xander, he threatened to throw him out the window. Alex asks if Philip waited until Xander was out of town to show his face again. Philip still hopes to make things right with Xander. Philip knows he has a long way to go but argues that he’s still co-CEO so he has a right to know what’s going on. Alex questions that and asks if they had a right to know that Philip forged a letter that put him here in the first place. Philip repeats that he’s not proud of tricking Xander in to giving him half of the company, but he can’t take that back. Philip says what he can do is make sure Titan-DiMera is successful. Alex questions Philip wanting him to help him with that.

Brady asks Kristen what the card is. Kristen explains that it’s an invitation to Rachel’s birthday party tonight. Brady thought it was an all girls party. Kristen says that Rachel made an exception for her dad. Brady questions if Rachel knows about this since he doubts she would want her dad hanging around her friends. Kristen tells him to forget it and asks why she would think he’s any different. Brady stops her and asks what she’s talking about. Kristen informs him that she sent invitations to all the girls in Rachel’s class and all of them said no, so no one is coming. Brady worries that Rachel will be devastated. Kristen says that’s why she hoped Brady would show up to help her forget that she doesn’t have a friend in the world.

Kate wonders where the lockbox could have gone. Roman then comes out from the back. Kate sends Doug III to wipe off the tables while she asks Roman why he moved his gun. Roman says he dropped it off to get cleaned. Kate remarks that for once, he’s the one lying to her face.

Chanel asks Johnny when he spoke to his father. Johnny says he showed up at the Pub as he was finishing breakfast with Marlena, so he told him to his face that he wished he was dead. Chanel feels he shouldn’t have done that. Johnny tells Chanel that wanting his father dead and making it happen are two very different things. Chanel questions if they are. Johnny asks where this is coming from. Chanel goes over how Johnny called off the adoption right after the shooting and then talking about not being sure who he was anymore. Chanel adds that Johnny was gone for hours on the night of the shooting. Johnny reminds her that he went for a walk. Chanel asks if anyone saw him. Johnny questions her asking him for an alibi and jokes that she should try out for the police department. Chanel tells him this isn’t funny as EJ could’ve died. Johnny responds that he’s convinced that would’ve made the world a better place but he’s not the one who pulled the trigger.

Kristen complains that the other little girls were conspiring to hurt Rachel’s feelings and heart was broken. Brady says they can’t put this all on the other girls because Rachel is not the easiest person to get along with. Kristen argues that she’s a confused kid who has gone through so much lately, including her mother and Brady’s father missing. Kristen argues that Rachel didn’t know her mother long but they did form a bond. Brady doesn’t want to be reminded of that because Kristen’s mother’s influence caused their daughter to be an accessory to kidnapping.

Alex questions why the hell he would help Philip after he lied to their entire family. Philip argues that helping him helps the family and says he won’t sit back and watch Xander screw up the merger of a lifetime just because he wants to save his wife’s job.

Kate and Roman go up to their room to talk in private. Roman questions Kate thinking he’s lying to her. Kate responds that she learned the art of deception from Stefano and Victor who were good liars while Roman is an amateur and she sees right through him. Kate asks Roman to tell her what’s going on with this gun.

Holly goes to the Pub to see Doug III and mentions the prom being tonight but tickets are sold out and she’s not going which Doug III questions. Holly says she doesn’t want to but this time, last year it was all she could think about and now it’s the last thing she would do.

Johnny asks if Chanel believes that he didn’t shoot his father. Chanel says she believes him but argues that he needs to deal with his feelings. Chanel knows EJ did some messed up things to him and Sami but he’s still his father and he could’ve died. Chanel does not believe Johnny would’ve been okay with that. Paulina comes over and greets them. Paulina mentions hearing about Sarah and asks if Chanel is okay. Chanel guesses bad news travels fast, so it won’t be long before the whole town knows that she almost killed Sarah.

Doug III apologizes to Holly and says he hates that she’s missing her senior prom because of him.

Paulina is sure not everyone knows what happened to Sarah and she just happened to bump in to her and Xander at the hospital, but Sarah is fine and will be discharged tomorrow. Johnny encourages that it’s over and everything will be fine. Chanel worries that Xander could sue her and the Bakery. Paulina feels Xander is just relieved that Sarah is fine. Chanel brings up how upset Xander was. Paulina assures that Xander will cool down and thinks he must like her since he did marry her for five minutes. Chanel doesn’t think that will be enough for him to forgive her for almost killing the love of his life.

Alex questions Philip thinking Xander is making a play for the hospital just to save Sarah’s job. Philip asks what other reason there could be, pointing out that the hospital has been bleeding money for years. Alex suggests they could make changes. Philip argues that they aren’t in the business of fixing failing hospitals as they could take years. Alex tells Philip that Xander thinks they could make a whole lot of money with the hospital. Philip asks if he said how. Alex turns away, so Philip guesses there is another reason and Alex just isn’t telling him what it is.

Kristen declares that she should go and doesn’t know why she bothered thinking Brady would come. Brady stops her. Kristen complains about Brady taking shots at Rachel’s grandmother. Brady understands Rachel misses her grandparents but they can’t pretend she just started acting out. Brady brings up how Rachel acted towards Chloe. Kristen gets upset at Brady bringing up Chloe. Brady blames Kristen’s reaction for why Rachel is acting the way she is. Brady then asks Kristen how many friends she has.

Kate tells Roman that she fell in love with him because he was different from all the other men she had been with as he was honest, decent, and frugal which is why she knows he didn’t pay someone to clean his gun as she’s watched him do it. Roman has no idea where this is leading. Kate points out that they both had motive to want EJ dead, they both had guns, and they both went out on that night. Kate says as much as she would’ve relished the opportunity to fire a round in to EJ’s chest, she knows for a fact that she did not. Kate then asks Roman if he did.

Chanel doesn’t know how she mixed up the tray of vegan scones with the lemon ones. Paulina encourages that everyone makes mistakes and she shouldn’t beat herself up. Johnny agrees since Chanel has had plenty of her mind. Chanel agrees that she hasn’t been sleeping or thinking straight which Johnny blames himself for.

Holly questions why Doug III is the reason she’s not going to prom. Doug III points out that if she and Tate were still together, she’d be going tonight, and they would still be together if it wasn’t for him. Holly doesn’t know about that since they were on shaky ground already. Doug III feels he was the final straw. Holly argues that Tate ratted him out to Julie so that’s on him and he also is having a baby with another girl. Holly remarks that Tate would be taking Sophia to the prom if her doctor hadn’t put her on restricted activity. Doug III acknowledges that’s really tough. Holly admits she feels bad for Sophia since she never wanted the baby and now she’s missing all these senior year moments. Doug III relates to also missing his prom and reveals to Holly that he dropped out of high school.

Philip asks Alex what he’s not telling him about the hospital. Alex says the hospital may not be the money pit that Philip thinks he is and if it was, EJ wouldn’t be sniffing around. Alex adds that EJ wants to make a bid but Kayla wouldn’t even present it to the board. Philip guesses he will just have to trust that Alex and Xander know what they are doing. Philip adds that he can talk to Kate about rallying the other board members to their bid. Alex questions if he would do that. Philip assures that he only wants what’s best for Titan-DiMera. Philip decides he should head out as he’s meeting Brady at the Pub. Alex stops him and says he appreciates him coming on board. Philip then exits the office. As he walks away, he begins to text on his phone.

Kristen tells Brady that Lani is the only true friend she’ll ever need. Brady argues that Lani doesn’t live in Salem and she never sees her. Kristen asks if he really wants to talk about the behavior they are modeling for their daughter and brings up Brady’s drinking. Brady says he figured she’d got here. Kristen admits it was low and knows how hard he’s worked to get sober, so she apologizes. Kristen says they have both gone over their problems so they need to stop backpedaling and work on their daughter. Brady agrees that they are both to blame. Kristen says she’s tried to talk Rachel down from her worst impulses and she doesn’t want Rachel to grow up to be like her, a needy hot mess with obsessive tendencies. Brady doesn’t know if he’d describe her quite like that. Kristen guesses he’s just being nice. Kristen asks how to convey to their daughter to have strength when she couldn’t even hold on to the most important job she had. Kristen wanted Rachel to be proud of her being a lady boss, but all she was able to show her is how Stefano lost his empire to a pair of mouth breathing goons. Kristen brings up when her office was packed up and there was the little tiny vase that Rachel made her in summer camp, but now it’s Alex’s office. Brady gets a text from Philip about meeting at the Pub, so he tells Kristen that he has to cut this short. Kristen guesses Philip wants to gloat. Brady tells her it’s about Basic Black and Titan. Kristen comments on missing work lunches. Brady asks if she’ll be okay. Kristen responds that she’s a survivor as the one thing her father taught her is how to rise from the ashes.

Holly points out that Doug III never told her that he didn’t graduate high school. He says she never asked and he knows not having a high school diploma makes people think you’re dumb or troubled. Holly asks why he quit. Doug III says he was running with a tough crowd who would skip school so he started to do it too and his grades slipped but no one at home cared, so he didn’t either and he realized it was easier to just not go. Holly tells him that he could always get his GED and offers to help him study. Doug III says it couldn’t help and it’s a bonus if he gets to spend time with his favorite person in Salem. Brady and Philip arrive at the Pub. Brady greets Holly, who asks how he’s doing. Brady says he’s good but wishes he could say the same for Tate. Holly asks what’s wrong with Tate. Brady responds that Tate really misses her. Holly says she has to go and tells Doug III to think about her offer as she exits the Pub. Doug III goes to get menus for Brady and Philip as they grab a table. Brady asks Philip how Basic Black fits in to this corporate synergy framework. Philip confesses that’s not why he wants to have lunch today so Brady asks why he’s here. Philip asks what Brady knows about Xander’s bid for the hospital. Brady says not much but then questions why he called it Xander’s bid when he is the co-CEO. Philip says he’s just asking. Brady suggests Xander has froze him out and he’s fishing for information. Brady tells Philip that he has to get ready for Rachel’s birthday, so he will have to find himself another mole, leaving Philip frustrated.

Roman tells Kate that if he was going to shoot EJ, he would’ve done it a long damn time ago. Kate brings up that Roman said he was triggered by what EJ and Arnold did to Jada and Rafe. Roman admits it brought back terrible memories of what they did to Sami. Kate says that is why she wouldn’t blame him if he shot EJ and would support him through everything. Kate asks Roman again if he shot EJ. Roman says no. Kate hugs him in relief.

Johnny tells Chanel that if this is anyone’s fault, it’s his as he’s the reason she hasn’t been sleeping or concentrating. Johnny adds that yesterday was Mother’s Day and she would have had Mother’s Day orders all day at the Bakery. Chanel says she’s been trying to be strong but it’s hard when it feels like she’s losing everything she cares about including her marriage and her dreams of being a mother and now her business.

Kristen goes to the DiMera Enterprises office and comments on Alex making himself comfortable in her office. Alex asks what she’s doing here. Kristen says she’s not here to cause trouble and mentions missing a little blue vase when her things were packed up. Alex calls it a little ugly thing and says he threw it away. Kristen argues that her daughter made it and she thought it was beautiful. Alex admits he didn’t know that while Kristen doesn’t think he would care. Alex knows this is probably weird for her. Kristen complains about Xander and Philip ripping her birthright from her. Alex is sure she will land on her feet and asks what he can do for her. Kristen brings up that they were friends once. Alex asks again what she wants. Kristen hoped she could convince him to put in a good word for her with Xander and Philip. Alex doesn’t think they’d be interested in her prowess in bed and he’s not interested anymore either. Kristen guesses she’ll have to play it straight. Kristen says she’s a serious, driven woman who is very passionate about her career, so she’d still like to be working at DiMera-Titan. Kristen says she may no longer be CEO but she could still be an asset to the company as she has a lot to contribute. Alex responds that he’s sorry but there’s nothing he can do to help her. Kristen thanks him for nothing and storms out.

Brady exits the Pub and runs in to Kristen, who asks if his meeting is done already. Brady confirms it is and asks if she’s okay. Kristen explains that she went to Titan-DiMera to retrieve the vase that Rachel made her but Alex had thrown it away like garbage. Brady says he’s sorry about that. Kristen talks about Rachel making the vase and says she’s feeling emotional about Rachel turning a year older. Kristen cries that it’s going so fast. Brady thinks that’s why they should try to make sure she has a lot of fun at her birthday party. Kristen questions that being just her and her mother but Brady says they can make it a real party with the three of them. Kristen excitedly hugs Brady and thanks him.

Kate tells Roman that she’s sorry for accusing him of attempted murder. Roman agrees it made sense but forgives her and he’s glad they got this out in the open. Kate says there is something that still puzzles her and questions why he moved the lockbox. Roman responds that there is something he needs to tell her, but she can’t tell anyone anything. Kate thinks they both know she can keep a secret better than him. Roman then informs Kate that on the night of the shooting, somebody took his gun and he is worried that they used it on EJ.

Johnny asks Paulina to give he and Chanel a minute to talk. Paulina agrees to go get something to eat and walks away. Chanel asks Johnny what he needs to say. Johnny just wants to say again how sorry he is for how he handled everything and for blindsiding her about the adoption when he should’ve told her how he was feeling from the beginning. Johnny assures that he does want to start a family with her once he gets his head screwed on straight. Chanel questions how he plans to do that. Johnny informs her that he’s starting therapy and reveals that he just accepted a job from Xander at Titan. Chanel remarks that EJ is going to love that. Johnny says he already knows and he doesn’t care what EJ thinks. Johnny says he cares about Chanel and building the life they want to start a family together. Chanel says that’s what she cares about too. Johnny notes that it’s almost checkout time at the Salem Inn so he guesses he should let them know he needs to extend his stay. Johnny says he will text her and starts to walk on but Chanel stops him and tells him to go ahead and checkout, so he can come home. Johnny and Chanel embrace as Paulina watches on with a smile.

Alex sits in the town square with Stephanie’s manuscript. Alex pulls out his phone and makes a call to a publisher to take a look at something for him.

Philip returns to the DiMera Enterprises office and looks around to make sure it’s empty. Philip begins searching Alex’s desk and pulls out a folder on DiMera Pharmaceuticals which he begins to look through. Philip finds a number inside and makes a call to a doctor. Philip tells him that Xander is out of town and unreachable at the moment, but he asked him to reach out to him. Philip asks the doctor to get him up to speed as he just has a few questions.

Stephanie wakes up in bed with Alex, who is reading her manuscript for her novel “One Stormy Night”. Stephanie can’t believe it as Alex tells her that it’s hot and that he thought he’d read a chapter or two, but he can’t put it down.

Leo and Javi walk past the Brady Pub. Leo asks if Javi has made a decision about quitting his job as Gabi’s assistant. Javi says he hasn’t but Leo thinks it’s a no brainer because he’s been miserable. Javi says he just doesn’t want to let Gabi down as it feels like a betrayal. Leo feels he’s betraying himself to continue being unhappy and argues that Gabi would replace him in seconds. Leo thinks Gabi is wasting Javi’s talents. Javi doesn’t think it’s a good idea when he has no plan for what to do next. Leo suggests he start quiet quitting by doing the bare minimum at work. Leo says instead of heading to work early, Javi could have breakfast with him in the town square so they walk off together.

EJ approaches Johnny in the Pub and says he’s glad he’s there as he hoped they could have a word. Johnny responds that Chad and Marlena both encouraged him to and he respects them, but he realized he doesn’t want to be here as he can’t stand to be around EJ. EJ stops him and asks him not to go.

In the town square, Xander shouts for help as Sarah choked and is having trouble breathing. Chad goes to check on her while Cat goes to call 911.

Stephanie questions Alex not getting any sleep at all which he confirms. Stephanie jokes that it’s a far cry from Alex reading Moby Dick. Alex tells Stephanie that this is engrossing. Stephanie jokes that erotica is more up his alley. Alex admits that held his attention but says she is gifted. Stephanie says she just enjoys writing in her spare time. Alex feels her novel is a best seller waiting to happen, so she wants Titan to publish it.

Johnny tells EJ that he has nothing to say to him. EJ says he has something to say to him. EJ tells Johnny that he forgives him which he questions. EJ thinks he knows why and assures that he won’t mention it to anyone. EJ declares that he will protect him with his life if necessary. Johnny questions if he remembers. EJ confirms that he remembers the night he was shot.

Xander urges Sarah to stay with him as Cat says the ambulance is on it’s way. Leo and Javi arrive in the town square. Leo asks what’s going on as Javi rushes over and notices that she is in epileptic shock. They get the EpiPen from Sarah’s purse which Javi uses to inject Sarah. Xander is relieved that it’s working as Sarah begins to calm down as Javi, Leo, Chad, and Cat look on. Sarah gets a cup of water and says she is feeling better. Chad is thankful that Javi was there since he knew right away that Sarah was having an allergic reaction. Xander agrees and wants to thank Javi but notices that he’s gone and wonders where he went.

Leo catches up with Javi in the park and exclaims that it was amazing that Javi just saved Sarah’s life. Javi calls it no big deal but Leo insists that nobody had any idea what was happening and Javi knew right away. Leo calls Javi a hero but he disagrees. Leo questions why Javi wouldn’t want to stick around for all the praise. Javi says he didn’t want the attention. Leo jokes that they could’ve got a free breakfast or a vacation out of it since Xander owns two companies. Leo wants to go back but Javi says he just wants to forget the whole situation happened. Leo feels Javi is acting very weird about this and questions what’s going on with him.

Stephanie tells Alex that she’s flattered that he likes her work but there is no way he’s letting him publish it. Alex doesn’t understand why not. Stephanie doesn’t need people realizing that she writes that sort of salacious drivel. Alex argues that her writing is clear and compelling, comparing it to 50 Shades of Grey but better. Alex praises her characters and dialogue, calling it a masterpiece compared to that. Stephanie admits she’s flattered by his praise but she doesn’t want to be associated with a tawdry romance novel, feeling if her clients got wind of this, they wouldn’t take her seriously. Alex suggests she write it under an alias but Stephanie is still not sure it will work. Alex says she doesn’t have to decide right now, but she should think about it which she agrees to do.

Johnny tells EJ that he can explain but EJ says there’s no need as he understands. EJ imagines the events of that night have been weighing heavily on him and has a lot to do with why Johnny backed out of the adoption. Johnny tells EJ that he’s right that it did. EJ says he’s so very sorry and calls Johnny a wonderful person who deserves happiness and a family of his own. Johnny agrees but says he’s not sorry for anything that happened that night. EJ guesses his only regret is that he lived as he hears he’s been telling that to anyone who will listen. Johnny calls it the truth. EJ asks if he really hates him that much. EJ questions if he hasn’t been there for him, provided for him, and given him everything he could want. Johnny calls that irrelevant now. Johnny says he looks at him and all he feels is disgust. Johnny tells EJ that he hates him and he always will.

Chanel and Felicity rush over from the Bakery to see what’s going on. Xander tells Chanel that Sarah had an allergic reaction. Chanel recalls Sarah telling her that she was allergic to pistachio and then pistachio milk is used in their vegan scones so there could’ve been a mixup. Chanel goes back to the Bakery to try to figure out what happened. Xander questions Felicity being the one who brought their order and if she gave them the wrong scones. Cat warns him to be careful how he talks to her. Xander argues that he’s allowed to react and says this whole situation could’ve been avoided if Felicity wasn’t careless. Chad complains that Xander is upsetting Felicity. Xander argues that his wife could’ve died. Chad says that’s enough. Chanel returns and tells Sarah that she’s so sorry as it was all her fault.

Stephanie asks Alex what he thinks of “Harper” as her pseudonym and asks how much he has left to finish. Alex says about 50 pages, so Stephanie says he’ll have to tell her what he thinks of the big twist. Alex tells her not to spoil it. Stephanie comments on him being really in to it. Alex says it’s not just the compelling plot, but the character development. Stephanie asks if the sex scenes aren’t that interesting to him then. Alex comments on one scene that he thought was hot and points out something in the script that he hasn’t even tried. Stephanie admits she hasn’t tried it either, so Alex suggests what better time than the present as they begin kissing.

Javi tells Leo that he’s not being weird. Leo argues that normally Javi is an open book who tells him everything but now he’s being cagey like he’s hiding something. Javi says he’s not hiding anything. Leo asks if he doesn’t trust him. Javi assures that he loves him. Leo asks what the deal is. Javi reveals that he has some medical training from when he lived in Corpus Christi and he was supposed to be a firefighter/EMT but at the end, he threw in the towel. Leo questions why he quit and if something happened.

Xander questions Chanel saying it was her fault. Chanel explains that she mistakenly gave Sarah a vegan scone instead of a regular one. Chanel guesses she got distracted and takes full responsibility. Sarah tells her it’s okay as it was an accident. Cat thinks Xander owes Felicity an apology. Xander admits he might have jumped to conclusions. The ambulance then arrives so Xander rushes over to get the paramedics.

EJ warns Johnny to tread carefully. Johnny points out that EJ just said he was going to protect him. EJ says even he has his limits as he’s not a doormat. Johnny mocks his changed man routine not lasting long and laughs off the idea of EJ being enlightened since the shooting. Johnny asks if it’s all a charade to get people to let their guards down, like Belle. EJ argues that being in a coma can change a person profoundly. Johnny questions how long it will last because even if the coma changed him, the real him is still in there waiting to take over. Johnny says he just saw the anger in EJ’s eyes that feels so familiar. EJ remarks that his own son just said he will always hate him and asks if he’s supposed to just be okay with that. Johnny says he can react however he wants because he doesn’t care what he thinks anymore and he wants him out of his life for good. EJ responds that he certainly almost got his wish.

Leo asks Javi if he wants to tell him why he quit being a firefighter EMT. Leo brings up Javi mentioning a career he was passionate about and guesses that’s what he was talking about. Leo asks why he gave it up. Javi says it’s not an easy topic for him. Leo apologizes for hitting a nerve and agrees to table the discussion as long as he tells him about it someday which Javi agrees to.

Chad encourages Felicity that Sarah is going to be okay. Felicity hopes so since she was always nice to her. Chad comments that Xander wasn’t being very nice while Cat assures Felicity that it was not her fault. Felicity says she just tries to do her best. Cat encourages Felicity and praises her work. Chad agrees that Felicity is amazing and tells her not to let anyone ever make her doubt herself. Chanel comes back and tells them that Sarah and Xander just left in the ambulance but Sarah seems be doing okay. Chanel apologizes to Felicity for her getting blamed for something she did and wants her to know none of this is her fault. Chanel decides she will close the Bakery for a few hours to regroup and gives Felicity the rest of the day off. Chanel takes Felicity to go get her things. Cat thanks Chad for helping Felicity feel better and for defending her with Xander. Chad says Cat did a pretty good job herself and adds that Xander was out of line. Cat is glad that Sarah is okay. Chad admits he was pretty impressed how Cat stood up and took charge. Cat says managing chaos becomes second nature after growing up with her siblings.

Johnny says he knew he shouldn’t have stayed to talk to EJ but he won’t make that mistake again. EJ says he obviously can’t keep him. Johnny stops and says there is one last thing to tell him as he reveals that Xander has been courting him for a job at Titan-DiMera. EJ questions why. Johnny says Xander pretty much wanted to use him as a pawn to get to EJ. EJ guesses he turned him down since he never had any interest in the family business. Johnny responds that he told Xander he would think about it, but after running in to EJ, he thinks he will take the job. Johnny tells EJ to have a nice rest of his day and walks out of the Pub, leaving EJ frustrated.

Chad reminds Cat that they never finished their discussion about their plan for their date. Cat thought they were going to do a picnic by the river. Chad points out that she was afraid he would push her in the river. Chad adds that they agreed to keep it casual while a picnic by the river feels more like a romantic date. Chad suggests they could go to the amusement park but Cat jokes that sounds like a date date too and she could get scared on a roller coaster where she might have to suddenly get close to him or Chad could win her a teddy bear and she could give him a big hug. Chad jokes that it’s way too risky so he suggests they could go to a Chicago Cubs game. Cat says she does love baseball but she always thought a baseball game would be the most perfectly romantic date. Chad decides this is very hard so they just have to come up with something that is very platonic and not romantic. Cat jokes that they’ll just have to pick up trash from the side of the road. Chad says that would be depressing, so Cat suggests they go skydiving. Chad points out that Cat said she was afraid of heights. Chanel brings Felicity back so Cat says they will discuss this later. Chad asks Chanel if she’s good. Chanel says she’s fine, so Chad goes to walk Cat and Felicity to their car. Chanel then sits down on the bench, looking upset.

Alex finishes a work call as Stephanie brings them coffee. Alex says he just got to checking his messages and Xander left him some very urgent business to attend to while he’s out of town. Stephanie asks if he got it all done. Alex confirms that he setup a very important meeting about an acquisition that he’s very excited about and he thinks she will be too. Alex then informs Stephanie that Xander wants to put in a bid for the hospital. Stephanie asks if he can afford that. Alex confirms that all they’ll have to do is liquidate some assets but notes the only problem is that EJ also put in an offer. Stephanie asks if there will be a bidding war but Alex says Kayla had the sense to turn EJ down. Stephanie calls that surprising despite Kayla not being EJ’s biggest fan because the hospital is in desperate need of saving. Alex hopes that it’s Titan-DiMera that swoops in to save the day because he knows it’s a matter of time before EJ puts in a backup offer. Alex worries about EJ gaining control of the hospital which Stephanie agrees would not be ideal. Alex suggests Stephanie could put in a good word with Kayla which she agrees to do. Alex thanks her and says he’s sure Xander will appreciate it as well.

Xander gets Sarah set up in a hospital bed and tells her that he just spoke to Maggie about what happened and she said she will be over as soon as she puts Victoria down for a nap. Sarah says Maggie doesn’t need to come as she’s fine. Xander jokes that a hurricane couldn’t keep Maggie away. Xander adds that he called the hotel and cancelled their reservation. Sarah sighs but admits it’s probably for the best as she’ll be released in a couple of hours but she’s exhausted and not up for a road trip. Sarah apologizes because she knows he was looking forward to it. Xander tells her that she has no need to apologize and how worried he was about losing her. Xander feels he should’ve realized sooner what was happening. Sarah says to just be grateful that Javi showed up when he did.

Leo and Javi sit together in the park. Leo promises not to grill Javi any more about why he quit, but asks him what it was like being a firefighter EMT. Leo jokes about a firefighter calendar he had in the past. Leo asks if Javi still has the outfit and if he would model it for him. Javi calls his questions ridiculous. Leo says he’s very curious about his firefighter past and calls it a turn on. Javi tells Leo that he would climb any ladder to be with him. Leo says Javi puts a fire in him that he doesn’t want put out as they kiss.

Johnny walks through the town square and finds Chanel on the bench crying. Johnny asks if she’s okay. Chanel admits that she’s not and Johnny hugs her as she breaks down crying.

Chad, Cat, and Felicity walk past the Pub and run in to EJ, who asks for a word with Chad in private. Cat tells Chad their car is right over there and they are good. Cat thanks Chad for everything she walks away with Felicity. EJ asks Chad if he’s sure he’s not smitten with Cat. Chad asks EJ what’s up. EJ responds that he’s making a pitch to buy University Hospital. Chad asks why. EJ talks about the hospital being so good to him and saved his life, so he wants to return the favor by keeping their doors open. Chad calls that very generous of him. EJ explains that Kayla doesn’t agree and is adamantly opposed to the idea as she doesn’t trust him. Chad doesn’t blame her and asks how he can help. EJ brings up Chad being on the hospital board and asks him to convince the other board members to overrule Kayla, allowing him to save the hospital.

Javi appreciates Leo’s interest in his former job but says he’s about to be late to his current job so he’ll see him at home. Javi then heads to work. Leo then pulls out his phone to search Javier Hernandez, Corpus Christi firefighter EMT.

Xander tells Sarah they should send Javi a nice thank you like a fruit basket. Xander talks about feeling guilty about putting his foot in his mouth earlier but says Sarah and Victoria are everything to him and he can’t live without them. Sarah says she feels the same about him.

Alex tells Stephanie about Xander and Sarah’s trip, noting that while Xander is away, he is left in charge and if he can pull off this deal, it will be a win for the hospital, Titan-DiMera, and Salem. Stephanie thinks Alex is doing all he can. Stephanie says since his boss is out of town, they can re-enact page 246 of her novel. Alex likes the way she thinks as they kiss.

Chad tells EJ that he will go to bat for him but warns that he will have to move quick because he just got a text that Xander is making an offer to buy the hospital which surprises EJ. Chad says with Sarah and Maggie there, it’s going to be an uphill battle.

Chanel tells Johnny what happened with Sarah. Johnny encourages that it was an accident and Sarah is going to be fine. Chanel calls it a stupid mistake and wouldn’t be surprised if they never come to the Bakery again. Chanel thanks Johnny for trying to cheer her up and admits it’s working a little. Chanel says being in his arms felt right and she misses that. Johnny says he does too and he’s really glad to be there for her. Chanel says when Johnny called off the adoption, she was blindsided because she had this whole vision of their future with a baby and it was taken from her, so it was really painful. Chanel decides she may be ready to forgive him and for him to come back home, but she has a question before that. Johnny tells her to ask him anything. Chanel says she needs him to be honest as she then asks if he shot his father.

Cat and Chad have breakfast together in the town square. Chad asks how Felicity is doing. Cat says working at the Bakery has been great for her and she’s still riding high from her Olympiad ceremony. Cat asks what Chad wanted to talk to her about in person. Chad informs her that he talked to EJ about the auction date and it’s officially off. Cat asks if EJ cancelled it but Chad reveals that he did.

Abe joins Chanel in the living room of Abe and Paulina’s new apartment. Chanel comments on how quickly they got everything unpacked. Abe asks if Chanel is really okay. Chanel admits she’s been having trouble sleeping. Abe says he’s sorry about the adoption falling through. Chanel can’t explain how much it hurts. Abe responds that he knows exactly how she feels.

Johnny goes to see Xander in his Titan office. Xander brings up Johnny staying at the Salem Inn and comments that he must have spent half his time in Salem there. Xander promises Johnny that if he comes to work at Titan, he’ll be eating like a king again in no time. Xander asks if Johnny has given any thought to his offer.

Kayla goes to her office at the hospital and finds EJ at her desk. Kayla questions what he’s doing in her office. EJ responds that he believes they have unfinished business to discuss.

Chad tells Cat that EJ’s donation is non-refundable. Chad asks if she’s not disappointed about the date being off. Cat jokes about looking forward to dining out with the mysterious EJ DiMera. Cat admits it was a little strange since EJ donated a lot of money but is apparently dating Belle now. Chad explains that EJ said he woke up from his coma as a more generous person. Cat questions EJ bidding on her because he’s a nice guy and calls it strange that he made such a big donation when he’s obviously spoken for. Cat says she’s just not used to people throwing that much money around. Chad mentions offering to reimburse EJ. Chad says he loves his brother but he’s not someone she should be in debt to. Chad adds that EJ didn’t accept his offer but gave him a counter offer that the money go towards Cat going on a date with him instead.

EJ tells Kayla that he thought she should sleep on his offer and brings up how much stress she’s been under with the hospital funding and being desperate for a buyer. Kayla says desperate is not the word she would choose. EJ says he wanted to give her a second chance to accept his timely offer before he goes to the board. EJ adds that if he acquires the hospital, one of his priorities would be maintaining a staff that is competent and loyal. Kayla asks if that’s a threat. EJ argues that he’s offering her the chance to be a hero and save the hospital. Kayla says she’s well aware of the DiMeras donation to the hospital but repeats that every dollar from Stefano came with strings, so she presumes EJ will be the same. EJ says no strings but Kayla feels she cannot in good faith sign off on the DiMeras taking control of the hospital which is part of Tom and Alice’s legacy. Kayla thinks they would be appalled if she let that happen. Kayla wishes EJ luck. EJ warns that she’s being very unwise and she will soon realize her stance is pointless because he’s going to own the hospital one way or another. EJ then walks out of the office.

Johnny asks Xander if they can be real with each other and questions why Xander is interested in hiring him at Titan since he has limited experience in the corporate world. Xander agrees that his resume is thin but he knows he’s smart and capable. Xander thinks it would be reassuring for the remaining DiMera employees to have a respectable DiMera around who doesn’t have real blood with the Kiriakis family. Xander knows business can get messy. Johnny says family can too. Johnny says it all sounds great but he said they were going to be real with each other. Johnny questions if there’s no other reason that Xander might want to hire him at Titan, like using him to get at his father. Xander asks if that would be a deal breaker.

EJ walks by Marlena at the hospital. Marlena asks if something is wrong. EJ responds that he’s finding that trying to do something nice for someone else is not that rewarding. Marlena finds that cynical. EJ complains the he almost died and his son has no empathy for him. EJ adds that everyone is treating him like the criminal instead of the victim and he finds that demoralizing. Marlena asks if he wants to get something off his chest. EJ questions how he can continue to change and evolve if everyone is so skeptical that he’s even able to change. Marlena says he must know why people are skeptical, pointing out that he’s hurt so many people in the past. EJ guesses it was a mistake to think she would understand. Marlena says to let her finish. Marlena advises EJ that if he wants people to think better of him, he has to give them a chance and they will come around eventually. EJ asks if she really thinks someone like him is capable of change. Marlena assures that she does. Marlena brings up Belle thinking EJ is sincere about wanting to change, so she thinks he has hope. EJ says that means a lot to him and he appreciates her faith in him. EJ assures Marlena that he’s very grateful that Belle is in his life as he deeply cares for her, but that doesn’t seem to please her. Marlena confirms that it worries her because she’s seen what happens to people that EJ cares about. Marlena then asks EJ if he loves Belle.

Sarah goes to see Kayla in her office. Kayla asks what she’s doing here instead of being off on her mini honeymoon. Sarah assures she’s going but wanted to check on some patients first. Sarah asks Kayla to check on one of her patients while she’s gone which she agrees to do. Sarah thanks Kayla for letting her skip the medical conference. Kayla assures that she deserves the vacation. Sarah asks who she sent in her place. Kayla says she sent Dr. Jeffery Russell. Sarah questions when he was last even out of his lab. Kayla says it’s been awhile and he deserved a break. Sarah decides she will let Kayla get back to her paper work. Kayla stops her to let her know that EJ came by and offered to buy the hospital. Sarah calls that amazing since EJ could save it from closing but Kayla reveals that he won’t because she told him to take a hike.

EJ tells Marlena how much Belle means to him and swears that she’s in good hands. Marlena worries that he will squeeze the life out of her like what happened to Sami. EJ admits his past actions are indefensible and says all he can do is try to do better going forward as a partner and father. EJ asks if Marlena is still willing to speak to Johnny to put in a good word for him. Marlena agrees to ask Johnny to contact him. EJ thanks her. Marlena clarifies that she’s not doing it for EJ but for Johnny because he’s carrying around so much that she’s worried about what he might do next. EJ thinks back to Johnny pulling the gun on him. Marlena then asks if EJ is alright.

Johnny tells Xander that he really doesn’t care why he wants to bring him in to Titan and sticking it to EJ actually makes the offer more attractive. Johnny says he’s been adamant that he wanted nothing to do with the family business so he’s sure EJ would be especially displeased if he’s working for the company that took it from him. Johnny asks Xander what exactly his job would be here. Xander responds that he’d be a valued employee at Titan. Johnny says he’ll need more time to think about it. Xander mentions heading out of town with Sarah for a long weekend getaway and says he’s sure Johnny will want to discuss this with his wife too. They shake hands as Xander tells Johnny that they will talk about this when he gets back.

Abe talks to Chanel about how he and Lexie raised Isaac for two years until they had to turn him over to Bo and Hope and how Lexie went off a cliff afterwards. Chanel doesn’t want to compare what she’s going through to what they went through since she hasn’t even met Sophia’s baby yet. Abe feels that doesn’t make it any less painful. Chanel points out that Abe and Lexie were able to get past it and asks if having Theo made things better for them. Abe confirms it definitely helped heal their hearts. Chanel thanks Abe for sharing but says as things stand now for her and Johnny, he’s lost his desire to be a father so there isn’t going to be a miracle baby. Chanel cries that she’s not sure that she and Johnny will be able to heal their hearts like Abe and Lexie were. Chanel adds that she’s not sure that she and Johnny will be able to find their way back to each other.

Cat questions Chad wanting to go on a date with her. Chad says if he’s okay with a last minute substitution. Cat asks if he’s okay with it. Chad admits he thought it might be weird because of their history but says they are friends now and as her friend, he’s saving her from an awkward date with EJ. Chad calls it an expression of gratitude for everything she did for the fundraiser. Cat responds that she couldn’t have done it without him. Chad says they make a great team then since they raised a lot of money which Cat notes was for a wonderful cause. Chad asks if Cat is going to go on this date with him then, noting it came with a hefty price tag but that doesn’t mean they can’t have a casual date of dinner and a movie as a fun night. Cat then agrees to the date.

Sarah understands why Kayla would be wary of EJ owning the hospital, considering all that his family has done over the years. Kayla notes Sarah’s expression and asks if she thinks she’s making a mistake turning it down. Sarah admits she was relieved at possibly keeping her job or the hospital being saved, but Kayla is Chief of Staff, so it’s her call to make. Kayla asks what if her call means the hospital goes out of business for good. Sarah says all the donations had to buy them some time. Kayla says they are not out of the woods yet. Sarah feels if EJ is offering to buy something, he thinks it’s a good investment, so if he’s interested in the hospital then there has to be other buyers out there too.

Marlena questions EJ wincing which he notes is just residual pain from his gunshot wound. Marlena offers to call a nurse but EJ says he’ll be fine and asks Marlena to let him know how things go with Johnny as he walks away. Sarah comes by, surprising Marlena as she thought she had left for her trip already. Sarah explains that she’s making one last round to check on her patients and then she’s out. Marlena tells her that she and Xander deserve this as they worked very hard for rest and relaxation.

Chanel tells Abe that she loves Johnny and knows he didn’t mean to hurt her, but she’s having a really hard time forgiving him. Chanel questions why Johnny didn’t come to her when he was struggling and having doubts. Abe guesses he was afraid of hurting her. Chanel complains that this hurts so much more and questions him calling off the adoption with no warning or discussion. Abe agrees that Johnny didn’t handle it the right way. Chanel brings up Abe saying Lexie went off a cliff after they lost Isaac and worries that the same thing could’ve happened to Johnny around the time EJ was shot.

Johnny walks through the town square and comes across Chad and Cat. Chad says he needs to talk to him. Johnny says he’s on his way to meet Marlena but Chad promises it will only take a second, so Cat goes to get coffee refills. Chad tells Johnny that EJ is anxious to see him but Johnny says he’s busy and patching things up with EJ is not on his list. Chad says he knows they had this discussion when EJ was in a coma but he’s awake now. Chad encourages Johnny to think about the good times they’ve had and that EJ is sorry for his mistakes. Johnny argues that it was a lot more than mistakes as he violated his mother and lied to him for years while pretending to be someone he wasn’t. Johnny declares that he’s not ready to forgive EJ yet. Johnny asks Chad if he could forgive somebody who caused him that much pain.

EJ returns home to find Jeffrey at the door to the DiMera Mansion. Jeffrey says he doesn’t have much time since Kayla is sending him to a medical conference and asks what she said to his offer. EJ informs him that Kayla turned him down, so Jeffrey asks if his research dies with the hospital. EJ says not quite as there are other avenues to explore. EJ says they may have lost today’s battle but they will win the war.

Abe questions Chanel saying Johnny went off a cliff around the time EJ was shot. Chanel says she didn’t mean to say that and wants to drop it but Abe questions if she’s considering the possibility that Johnny shot his father. Chanel admits she can’t stop thinking about Johnny saying his father was dead to him and then saying he wished that he had died. Chanel adds that on the night of the shooting, Johnny was gone for a long time and when he came back, he seemed so distant. Chanel asks Abe what she should do. Abe responds that she should talk to him and maybe Johnny can help ease her mind. Chanel hopes so and thanks Abe for listening as they hug. Abe assures that he’s always here. Chanel decides she should get to work and goes to get ready.

Marlena and Johnny eat together at the Pub. Marlena asks if he’s spoken to Chanel. Johnny says he saw her yesterday and she seemed more understanding about him backing out of the adoption. Marlena calls that a positive development. Johnny notes that she’s still not ready for him to come home. Marlena says she will need time to grieve the loss and he will need to be there every step of the way. Marlena adds that if he’s hoping to reconcile and get back to where they were, he’s going to have to figure out who he is and the only way to do that is by talking to his father.

EJ tells Jeffrey to have a good trip and says he will let him know if there’s any updates on the hospital. Jeffrey wishes him luck as EJ heads in to the DiMera Mansion. Jeffrey then gets a call from Xander, who says he’s heard about his research in to the cure for Sepsis which he calls impressive. Xander tells him that he has an offer from him. Jeffrey responds that he’s not sure how he heard about his trials but the drug is owned by University Hospital and is not for sale. Xander says that he was told the same thing about DiMera Enterprises and now he owns it. Xander tells Jeffrey to keep his number as he’ll be in touch and then hangs up. Sarah then joins Xander in the town square and tells him that she’s officially off the clock and all her patients are covered. Sarah mentions Kayla sending Jeffrey in her place. Xander says that’s nice of Kayla and suggests bringing her back a bottle of wine. Sarah notes Kayla being very stressed lately and brings up EJ offering to buy the hospital but Kayla turned him down. Xander is surprised but Sarah says no more talk about work. Xander agrees and suggests they divide and conquer their errands before they go. Sarah agrees to head to the pharmacy while Xander gets snacks. Xander then calls Alex and tells him that he’s about to go out of town but he needs to move on the hospital now.

Kayla calls Steve and tells him that Jeffrey is en route to Chicago and the rest of his team has the weekend off so she thinks they are ready to move.

Johnny understands why Marlena thinks he should talk to his dad and agrees to think about it. Marlena guesses that’s the most she can ask. Marlena thinks it would be a good idea if he would talk to somebody about his feelings. Johnny points out that’s what he’s doing now. Marlena suggests therapy and offers to recommend somebody. Marlena feels he needs somebody who can help him through this crisis and help him clear his head, so he can be there when Chanel needs him. Johnny responds that he has some big career decisions to make as he reveals that Xander offered him a job. Marlena is surprised to learn that Xander wants him to work at Titan when Johnny never even wanted to work at DiMera. Johnny admits he always kind of hated the idea. Marlena asks what Xander is thinking he would do. Johnny says that Xander said they would figure it out. Marlena asks if Johnny is considering it. Johnny says part of him thinks maybe it’s time to settle down and get a real job. Johnny adds that he’s had a great time being a director but maybe taking a corporate job and a more real career path is the adult thing to do and a way to prove to Chanel that he can be the husband she needs by pressing the reset button on his life.

Chanel walks through the town square and comes across Sarah and Xander. Sarah tells her that they are about to have a getaway with their daughter Victoria. Chanel says it sounds like they will have a wonderful time. Chanel offers to get them something from the Bakery for the road. They agree to get scones so Chanel says she’ll be right back and heads to the Bakery while Cat and Chad discuss date plans nearby. Chad mentions the movies but Cat says all that’s showing is superhero films and suggests something more outdoors. Chad mentions rock climbing but Cat is unsure so they decide on a picnic by the river. They joke about pushing each other in to the water.

Kayla tells Steve that once he gets in to the lab, he can use the remote access to turn the cameras off. Kayla reminds him to take the one dose of Versivex and get out. Kayla declares that if this saves Bo, it will all be worth it. She tells him to be careful and hangs up.

Johnny thanks Marlena for always being there to listen. Marlena wishes she could do more. Johnny promises she’s done plenty and says he’s already thinking more carefully. Johnny tells her to text him the name of a therapist that she thinks would be a good fit which she agrees to do. Marlena hugs Johnny and says she knows it hasn’t been easy for him but she’s so proud of him. EJ then arrives. Marlena offers to stay but Johnny says he’s okay. Marlena tells him to take care and exits the Pub. EJ approaches Johnny and greets him.

Xander tells Sarah that their vacation has started and he already feels more relaxed. Sarah says she’s happy to be with her husband with no distractions. Sarah comments on her lemon scone tasting different and starts to choke. Chad and Cat express concern from their table while Xander shouts for someone to call 911.

At the DiMera Mansion, EJ calls Johnny and leaves a message that he knows Johnny is trying to avoid him but no matter how he feels or what happened between them, he will always love him. EJ then looks at the Spectator article on who shot him. EJ goes through the mail and comes across an envelope from DiMera that he wonders if it’s from Johnny.

Philip runs in to Stephanie in the town square. Philip says he was on his way to check in with Roman about Bo and invites her to come too. Stephanie says her parents are keeping her in the loop. Stephanie adds that she figures Philip and Kate would want to celebrate taking over DiMera and getting everything he ever wanted. Stephanie asks if it was all worth it.

Alex joins Xander in the living room of the Kiriakis Mansion. Alex explains that he just did a deep dive on DiMera Pharmaceuticals and they are sitting on a gold mine. Alex reminds Xander that he said all it takes is one breakthrough drug and this is it.

Belle runs in to Shawn at the Brady Pub and says she’s so sorry to hear about Bo. Belle encourages Shawn to stay strong as Bo won’t give up without a fight. Shawn responds that he won’t either.

Steve joins Kayla in her office at the hospital. Kayla informs him that Hope sent over Bo’s latest medical records and his condition is deteriorating rapidly. Steve tells her that he’s so sorry. Kayla worries that they are running out of time, so if Steve is going to steal the drug to save Bo’s life, he needs to do it now before it’s too late.

Philip thought he and Stephanie could call a truce with everything going on. Stephanie argues that what’s happening with Bo doesn’t give him a free pass and that Bo would be the first person to call him out for lying to Xander. Philip explains that Xander kicked him out of the house but he can’t kick him out of the company without compromising their DiMera takeover and tanking Titan’s market cap. Stephanie remarks that he gets to keep the treasure he plundered. Philip asks if this means she’s not going to say anything. Stephanie says she would love to tip off Chad and have it land on the front page of the Spectator but she’s not going to do that. Philip thanks her. Stephanie assures that she’s not doing it for him but for Sarah because the only thing that would hurt Xander more than Philip betraying him is knowing that Sarah kept the secret from him. Stephanie states that could destroy their marriage. Philip agrees that some things are better left unsaid. Stephanie goes to leave but Philip stops her and says there is something more to be said that he should’ve told her a long time ago. Philip tells her that he’s sorry.

Xander didn’t expect Alex to attack this head on right after they talked about it this morning. Alex felt there’s no point in waiting and says it stood out to him that DiMera had tried unsuccessfully to fund a treatment for Sepsis. Alex adds that Justin told him what’s going on with Bo. Xander says he feels for everyone who loves Bo. Alex says a lot of people they care about are hurting and a drug for Sepsis could prevent a lot of suffering. Xander encourages getting to work on this miracle. Alex notes that the one catch is someone could be beating them to the punch.

Steve doesn’t think Kayla should be talking about this in the open. Kayla isn’t worried and says there’s no way she doesn’t get implicated if he gets caught and she’s made peace with that. Steve doesn’t want her to jeopardize her entire career for some false hope when the drug isn’t even in human trials yet. Steve asks what if it can’t save Bo. Kayla knows there are a lot of risks but the upside is that it could save Bo’s life and then it would give hope to millions of people because it will be fast tracked. Steve states that they have to break in and steal the drug in a way that no one notices but wonder if that’s even possible. Kayla encourages him to just take one dose and then Jeffrey can chalk it up to human error so the plan is to get in and out without being detected. Kayla asks if he looked at the floor plan of the lab. Steve confirms that he did and it turns out there’s one major roadblock to their plan. Steve informs her that Dr. Russell goes in and out of the lab at all hours of the night and has no set schedule so he could pop in and catch him at any time. Sarah then walks in and asks if she’s interrupting.

EJ opens his mail hoping it’s from Johnny but it’s a get well card from Stefan, so he trashes it. Dr. Jeffrey Russell walks in and asks if it’s a bad time. EJ says no and reminds him that he asked to see him because they have a lot to discuss. Jeffrey questions if they do and reminds EJ that Kayla won’t even consider giving him the rights to his drug, so without that, he feels it’s game over for them but EJ disagrees. EJ repeats that all is not lost and tells Jeffrey that everything is going exactly as he planned.

Belle asks Shawn if there’s been a change in Bo’s condition. Shawn says there hasn’t been but he’s not losing faith. Belle says she won’t either and she knows that can be hard. Shawn knows she can relate. Belle says Paul and Andrew are confident they will find John but it’s hard to keep getting her hopes up. Shawn is sure they’re doing everything they can to bring John home safely. They agree to send each other prayers. Shawn calls it sad that both of their dads are fighting for their lives. Shawn talks about how John and Bo still considered themselves family. Belle says that’s kind of like them.

Stephanie questions what Philip is sorry for. Philip doesn’t know where to start and apologizes for lying about the letter, compromising her integrity at work and most of all for treating her like dirt afterwards. Philip feels he’s been treating her like an afterthought which is selfish and idiotic since she always had his back. Stephanie asks why he did it when there were legal ways that he could’ve tried to claim his part of the inheritance, so she questions why it was so important for him to deny Xander his.

Alex informs Xander that DiMera is not the only one working on a drug to cure Sepsis as word is the hospital is working on their own. Xander talks about the hospital’s financial struggles and says it may give them time to catch up to them. Alex wants to rally the board and get to work. Xander asks if Alex has plans tonight. Alex confirms that he does, so Xander tells him to take the night off and commends him for his fantastic work as they shake hands. Alex goes to leave but stops and tells Xander that he knows he let him down by covering for Philip, but promises that he will not regret giving him a second chance. Alex then exits.

Sarah apologizes but Kayla assures she has an open door policy. Sarah mentions hearing about Bo and wishes there was something she could do. Kayla thanks her and says they all feel the same way. Steve decides he should get going. Kayla says she’ll keep him posted as soon as she figures a way around her schedule as Steve then exits. Sarah suggests Kayla should call it a night and asks if she can take anything off her plate. Kayla thanks her but says she should keep busy although she isn’t looking forward to signing their new budget. Sarah offers to skip this weekend’s research conference in Chicago if it saves the hospital money. Sarah then admits her motivations aren’t pure but it’s the first weekend she’s had off in awhile and she’d love to be able to spend it with her husband and daughter. Sarah mentions having her eye on renting a cabin but guesses she can’t find someone to go to the conference in her place on such short notice.

Jeffrey tells EJ that the hospital retaining the rights to his drug Versivex doesn’t help them. EJ says not in the short term but they are playing chess not checkers. Jeffrey doesn’t understand. EJ explains that it’s all about thinking several steps ahead. EJ is not surprised that Kayla turned down his request and says he would’ve done the same. Jeffrey asks why he made him grovel to her though. EJ says it’s covering all their bases and he couldn’t risk Kayla catching wind of their plan. Jeffrey questions what plan since if the hospital goes under, his research is lost. EJ tells him that the hospital is not going under because it’s about to find itself a new bankroller and he’s looking at him.

Sarah tells Kayla that she better go pack but Kayla stops her and tells her to go spend the weekend with her family. Kayla says the conference is for research so they should send somebody with more lab experience anyway. Sarah asks if she can even find anybody in time. Kayla tells her to go ahead. Sarah hugs her and thanks her. Kayla assures the pleasure is all hers as Sarah then exits. Kayla then grabs her phone.

EJ informs Jeffrey that he’s going to buy University Hospital. Jeffrey questions how when he’s been ousted from his family business. Jeffrey asks why he didn’t just swoop in months ago when the hospital was first in trouble. EJ says he had to get his ducks in a row and then the shooting derailed his timeline, but now that he has everything in order, he’s ready to pull the trigger. EJ pours him a drink as Jeffrey questions if he’s really thought this through. Jeffrey warns EJ that the cost of funding the hospital will eventually bleed him dry. EJ says once his drug is approved, it will fund the hospital for decades and they will be heroes for curing a deadly illness. Jeffrey asks if his profit participation is just an added benefit. EJ says they have noble intentions and asks why good men shouldn’t be rewarded for their good deeds. Jeffrey then gets a text from Kayla, wanting to see him. He assumes she doesn’t know he and EJ are working together. EJ says there’s only one way to find out.

Philip tells Stephanie that he wasn’t trying to deny Xander his share of Titan and it was about doing something Victor couldn’t do. Philip talks about having to fake his death and Victor being ashamed while he never got a chance to redeem himself in Victor’s eyes before he died. Philip explains that he convinced himself if he did something Victor couldn’t do, it would make him proud in some way but feels saying it out loud sounds stupid. Stephanie disagrees and calls it the most human thing she’s heard him say since he came back to town. Philip says nothing else mattered to him and he was on a mission like a soldier. Philip can’t say he regrets doing what he did, but he does regret hurting the people he cares about because he’s pretty much lost every friend he had left. Stephanie says not everyone. Stephanie acknowledges that there are still a lot of hurt feelings between them but she has known him for most of her life and she’d like to think that one day, they can put all of this behind them and be friends again. Philip agrees that would be nice. Stephanie tells Philip to take care of himself and walks away.

Sarah goes home to Xander and says she has a surprise for him but questions what he’s reading that has him so enthralled that he didn’t hear her come in. Xander says he’s just trying to make heads or tails of the DiMera Pharmaceuticals division. Sarah comments on their careers overlapping and asks what it’s about. Xander asks what she knows about Sepsis. Sarah explains that in simple terms, it’s when an infection spreads so much that the immune system attacks it’s own body. Sarah says there are antibiotics but still a high morality rate. Xander asks if developing something would be a worthwhile pursuit. Sarah says tons of labs must be dedicated time for that. Xander asks if she knows about the hospital’s research. Sarah guesses this isn’t about Bo, so she asks what all these questions are about.

Steve meets Shawn at the Pub. Shawn asks if there’s any updates. Steve says he got some valuable insight from Kayla as he more or less told her what they are planning. Shawn worries that this is a big risk for Kayla. Steve says Kayla told him how much they can take without compromising the entire trial. Shawn feels it’s pretty simple to get in and get out. Shawn offers to go tonight if he wants but Steve tells him there’s a new complication.

Jeffrey goes to see Kayla in her office. Kayla says she didn’t like how they left things. Jeffrey asks if this means she’s changing her mind but Kayla says no. Kayla wants to throw another opportunity his way and asks if he’s busy this weekend. He says no outside of his research. Kayla tells him that he deserves a break and Chicago is beautiful this time of year. Kayla explains that they need someone from his department to represent them at a medical research conference and when he’s finished, he can enjoy the city. Jeffrey appreciates the offer but doesn’t think he’s the best person for the job as he’s not exactly known for his people skills and his staff can’t continue their research without him there to supervise. Kayla thinks it’s for the best because of the hours they’ve been working and says they all need the weekend off. Jeffrey remains unsure, so Kayla asks for one good reason why he wouldn’t do this.

Belle finds Philip in the town square and asks if he’s okay. Philip says he’s wiped from his apology tour but he’s sure he owes her one too. Belle guesses it’s about Titan and admits she was wondering when the other shoe would drop. Philip tells her that he gets to stay on as co-CEO because legal worries that it could compromise both companies if what he did got out. Philip adds that he took her advice in reaching out to Justin but he was pretty disappointed in him, almost as much as Maggie is. Philip admits he can’t blame her. Philip says he knows Victor would’ve wanted he and Xander to work together but says he took what he wanted without caring how it would affect anyone else. Philip tells Belle that the person he feels most guilty about hurting is Xander because for a second, it really started to feel like they were brothers in every sense of the word.

Xander tells Sarah that he’s trying to wrap his head around all this science and says it’s hard for him to make decisions about stuff he doesn’t fully understand. Sarah says luckily he employs people to do it for him and says she wants to get to her surprise. Sarah then shows him her phone and reveals that she booked them a cabin on the lake for the weekend and there’s a nearby day spa with a daycare for them to be alone. Xander thought she wanted to go somewhere tropical for their honeymoon. Sarah says she still expects that, so Xander asks what all this is. Sarah asks if there has to be a reason and says they’ve both been swamped so they can think of it as a mini honeymoon. Xander calls it incredibly sweet. Sarah says between everything with Titan and the hospital’s money troubles, they have both been run ragged. Sarah argues that Alex can watch Philip for a weekend but Xander is unsure. Sarah whispers to Xander what he would be missing.

Alex brings Stephanie to his bedroom with candles lit around the room, a bowl of popcorn, and bottles of wine. Alex figured with everything going on lately, it would be nice for them to stay in for a change and stream a movie. Stephanie calls that perfect as they kiss. Alex tells Stephanie they can even watch The Notebook but Stephanie says maybe they can go with something sexier. Alex asks if she means something like the novel she’s writing which surprises her.

Sarah has Xander relax to imagine what a spa day would be like but Xander says he’s never really been much of a spa guy and asks why this getaway is so important to her. Sarah says it’s just been one thing after another for them lately. Sarah talks about Xander being incredibly stressed by being forced to work with Philip and she’s wiped out from the hospital’s money troubles. Sarah wants one weekend without thinking about her job. Xander then agrees to the getaway. Xander tells Sarah that he loves her. Xander adds that he’s pretty sure they have the house to themselves tonight. Xander suggests giving her a taste of what they will be getting up to this weekend as they then exit together.

Stephanie questions Alex reading her manuscript. Alex confirms he read the first few pages. Stephanie says she’s so embarrassed because nobody was supposed to read it as it was just something she was doing in her spare time. Alex encourages that she’s so good at it and he can’t wait to finish it. Stephanie asks him not to. Alex acknowledges that it’s graphic and a little steamy but Stephanie feels it’s mortifying. Alex asks if she’s afraid that he will learn about her inner most fantasies and desires. Stephanie argues that he already knows most of them. Alex says if he’s not allowed to read it, maybe they can act out a couple chapters instead. Stephanie says she likes that idea as they kiss on the bed.

EJ joins Jeffrey in Kayla’s office and asks if it’s a bad time. Kayla asks Jeffrey to excuse them but notes that she won’t take no for an answer and asks if she can count on him. Jeffrey then agrees to be there and exits. EJ asks what that was about. Kayla says it was none of his business so EJ withdraws the question. Kayla asks if there’s something she can do for him. EJ responds that he’d like to do something more to help the hospital get out of it’s current predicament. Kayla says they are happy to take another donation but EJ declares that he wants to be the hospital’s savior.

Belle thinks Philip is mourning the loss of Xander because he’s afraid of losing his other brother too. Philip calls that an insightful theory. Philip adds that he knows he has no right to ask but he doesn’t want to cause more trouble for Xander if what he did ever got out. Belle assures that he’s covered. Philip says he appreciates that. Belle advises him to keep his nose clean and not get too comfortable since he may have dodged a bullet but he royally pissed off a lot of people so she suggests he watch his back as she walks away.

Shawn asks Steve how they will keep Jeffrey out of the lab. Steve says it will be tricky but he promised Kayla that they wouldn’t do anything to jeopardize the drug’s approval because they can’t take away the hope from millions to save one man which Bo wouldn’t want, so they have to be patient. Steve says that Kayla is working on a workaround as they speak. Shawn says she better hurry because Bo doesn’t have much time.

Kayla questions EJ wanting to buy University Hospital. EJ points out that they’ve been looking for a financial backer and here he is, calling it a perfect solution. Kayla says it might be too perfect and questions where this is coming from. EJ says that almost dying has a way of changing his outlook on life and it’s torn down his greed. EJ says he wants to use his fortune to put some good in to the world. EJ adds that with Kayla’s endorsement, the sale of the hospital will be approved in no time so he asks if she will help him help her. Kayla responds that it’s a hard pass which EJ questions. Kayla admits that EJ could solve all of the hospital’s problems and she would like to believe his intentions are pure but experience tells her they are not and there will definitely be strings attached. EJ calls this madness and asks if she hates his family so much that she would let the hospital collapse. Kayla is optimistic that they will succeed. EJ asks how since they will never find a backer in time. Kayla feels the fundraiser gave them some room to explore other options. EJ argues that she’s being unreasonable. Kayla warns that he’s getting on her last nerve and decides they are done. EJ argues that she doesn’t have final say on this and threatens to go over her head to the board. Kayla says she would recommend they not entertain his offer. Kayla points out that she’s spent decades building up good will in Salem while EJ can’t say the same. EJ remarks that she will come crawling back soon enough and warns her to pray that he’s just as generous when she does as he then exits the office.

Alex and Stephanie lay in bed together after having sex. As Stephanie falls asleep, Alex sneaks out of the bed to answer a call from Xander. Alex asks if he got any more word about the drug. Xander says DiMera will never catch up in time to the hospital but he has a new plan that will save the hospital, Sarah’s job, and get their hands on this breakthrough treatment. Alex asks what it is. Xander declares they are going to buy the hospital.
