You know I don’t like any of this, but I’m also shrewd enough to know that the truth coming out would only cause a lot of suffering for everyone.

Estonia. Grandma Marlena and Uncle Steve are planning to fly there today.

Well, she just went on and on about how pleased she was that he gave Philip a chance to stake out his claim in the company.

Well, I guess that makes sense. You know, I think Vivian’s always thought of Philip as her son since she carried him to term.

Yeah. Which would be so sweet, except she stole the embryo from Kate.

why did she feel the need to track you down to have this conversation? Did she say anything else about Victor’s letter?

Yeah. It was so strange. She said, um-

and these are her exact words– that she was so grateful that she was able to forge a new relationship with Philip. I had no idea what she was talking about.

What the hell, Xander? Why are you observing us from behind the tree?

I wasn’t doing that. I was just passing through. I saw you guys deep in conversation. I didn’t want to interrupt.

Right. Well, uh, Philip and I were just talking about how hard you guys have been working over at Titan.

Right. Yeah, well, you know what they say, the grind never stops, although it looks like Philip has found the right work-life balance. Plenty of time to socialize in the square.

Steph and I were just catching up. We haven’t seen each other in a while.

I’d expect not. Well, given all the time that she’s been spending with our cousin.

Right. And I’m happy for her and Alex. That’s actually what I was just telling her.

First of all, I just want to say, when we broke up, I really did want to move on and start over because I knew that’s what you wanted, and even though I was still pretty angry, I felt like I should respect that. But things haven’t exactly gone as I had planned, you know, with LA falling through and then, uh–

Us being hired together at Titan.

Right, right. And obviously neither of us were really thrilled about that. I know Stephanie definitely wasn’t.

Don’t worry about Stephanie. We talked about that. She’s very understanding.

Yeah. Yeah, for now. But down the line? I mean, she might feel differently. Especially because–

Because Titan is a very close-knit company, and I really thought because I was going to start working for a huge conglomerate we wouldn’t necessarily run into each other every day, but the office is actually pretty small. Anyways, um, you’re going to find this out sooner or later, so I might as well just tell you now. Um…

I’ve decided to quit my job.

Some article about Estonia. I don’t even know what I’m looking for. I just– [sighs] I can’t stop thinking about why Grandpa would have been sent there and what could have happened to him.

Yes, you’re right. It wasn’t. But I don’t know, Mayor Price must have gotten through to her because Mrs. Choi is apparently open to the possibility again.

Yeah. Yeah, I am, of course. Really relieved. But I doubt Mom will feel the same way. [tense music]

Uh, about an hour ago. I wanted to call you, but your Uncle Steve and Marlena came bursting into my office wanting to grill me about John. They seemed to be under the assumption that our strict protocol rules for security don’t apply to them.

Oh, come on. Really? I mean, Brady told me that he was– they were going to go and see you, but they’re going to pester you at a time like this?

Well, to be fair, they hadn’t heard about your mother yet.

Well, the leukemia is progressing again, but the good news is that your mother is going to be starting treatment right away. Now, we all know this is going to be a very rough road ahead, but the, uh– the medical advancement in blood cancer therapies, immunotherapies, and CAR T therapies, it– she can survive this. She will survive this.

[sighs] [somber music]

Sweetheart? Sweetheart, tell me. Talk to me. What’s going through your mind right now?

[sighs]

I don’t know, I just hate that she has to go through this all over again.

Well, she won’t have to be going through it alone. As soon as I can, I’m going to get out of here and go back to Los Angeles so I can be with her.

Good. I want to be there for her, too, in any way that I can. Is there anything that I can do for her now though?

Actually, there is.

Does your mom want you to keep the baby?

Yes, she does. She argued that Aunt Eve was given up for adoption, and she’s kind of screwed up because of it.

That’s very interesting, that your mother would think that Eve’s issues are a result of her being adopted.

Yes! Right, exactly. It made no sense to me either. I kept trying to tell her that this situation is completely different, that our baby would be raised by two loving parents who can provide a stable and a happy home, which is just something that Sophia at I can’t do at this stage in our lives. I just-

I truly think that our child would be better off with Johnny and Chanel as its parents.

I truly hope so too.

Hope? What are-

I– I thought you were on board with the adoption.

With an adoption, 100%. But this-

OK, what? You don’t think Johnny and Chanel would be good parents?

So if Johnny and Chanel want to care for– for this baby and love it, and you and Sophia and Mrs. Choi feel that this is the best decision, yes, son, I will– I will support this adoption. You know, as far as I know, Philip hasn’t been in touch with Vivian ever since that very uncomfortable appearance at Victor’s funeral. Philip is– he was furious with her, like the rest of us, when she tried to claim Victor’s entire estate. So I don’t know when they had time to develop this so-called new relationship.

That’s strange.

You know what though? Now that I think about it, Vivian did come back into town last year before she was arrested, the same time that Philip arrived too. I don’t know. I wonder if maybe she didn’t see him then.

You know, I think it’s probably likely that this relationship is mostly in her head. I’m certain that Philip wouldn’t want anything to do with her.

Yeah, you’re right. But that woman is always up to something. Thank goodness Philip is just too smart to get sucked into her web.

Well, looks like I’m moving back to New York.

I pretty much only came here for “Body and Soul.” Now that it’s relocated to LA, there’s not much for me here. I mean, at least in New York I have my parents and my sister.

Joy, how many times have you told me that you hated going back, that your mother’s very hard on you?

You mean you think that you figured out what they were talking about?

I hope it’s OK that I’m leaving. I know you have so much going on with Sophia’s pregnancy and–

Why would I know what Philip and Stephanie’s secret is?

Well, it’s obvious, isn’t it? Those two sneaks are having an affair behind Alex’s back.

Well, they were together not too long ago. I guess they realized they had some, uh, unfinished business. God, I was so impressed that Philip was being mature about working with Alex. Turns out he’s secretly shagging Alex’s girlfriend!

Look, let’s just– let’s back it up. Do we even know that they’re having an affair?

What other explanation could there be?

I don’t know.

It’s the only one that makes sense. Now, the question is, do I tell Alex?

And look, I know you’re the DA, and I know it’s probably not a good idea for me to be saying these things because you need to make sure justice is served. But either way, you wouldn’t have a case because–

Exactly. For the same reason as before, by the way. See, if her mother goes to the cops and she’s in custody, who knows what she’ll say? They’re gonna ask her why she attacked Ava. Then she’s gonna go into her grand plan that she had, and that’s going to involve Ava’s kidnapping.

Yes. And they will find out that your daughter was involved and be obligated to call Child Protective Services. I get it.

That’s funny. I didn’t get a call from Kristen to– demanding that I bail her mother out.

Well, that’s because I’m not pressing charges.

For attempted murder?

Brady convinced me to leave it alone. Again. Look, the long and short of it is, uh, if any of Rachel Blake’s crimes come to light, Brady could lose custody of his daughter. So now I am constantly looking over my shoulder, wondering if that maniac is gonna come after me again. [tense music]

I don’t know. I just wish I still had some kind of protection, you know?

– Ava? Why would she know anything?

Yeah, Ava said that EJ was involved in her kidnapping, remember?

That he found her when she was being held captive at Aremid.

Yeah, but Ava recanted her entire statement, which makes it inadmissible. And even if she hadn’t, didn’t have anything to do with me.

I’m not so sure about that.

Ava said that she thought EJ was gonna let her go. But then Kristen’s mother shows up, right? And then she takes EJ to a whole nother room, and they have a secret conversation. Then he left. He never came back for her.

So whatever Kristen’s mother said to him–

Convinced EJ that helping Ava wouldn’t be in his best interest.

She must have been holding something over him.

Mm-hmm. Yeah. But what? Yeah, you heard Paulina. When Gabi and I went over to the DiMera house to search the tunnels, I was certain that you were being held there. But then there was no sign of you.

So you think that he was holding me at Aremid?

I mean, it’s possible. Look, I think that if we want to nail EJ, this woman can be the key.

Mother, what are you doing with the gun?

Look, there’s no need to get upset. Like I said, it’s just a memorabilia. Your father had this gun.
