And, Eva, Laura is who you temporarily replaced after that horrible accident. It’s so nice to finally put a face to the name. I’ve heard great things. Tell me you had nothing to do with that crash. [scoffs] You thought you were the only one that can creep up on someone, huh? Two can play that game. Oh, hell no. What is this? I followed you. That’s what this is. I was in the neighborhood, and I saw you coming out of that drug store in Takoma Park. You’ve been all up in my business about our little affair back in the day, trying to get up under my skin. How does it feel now that the shoe is on the other foot? I’m warning you. I will scream so loud, they’ll hear me all the way in PG County. [chuckles] Go ahead. I don’t give a damn. You will once the boys in blue show up. Especially after they see this poor, helpless, defenseless woman give a performance worthy of Viola Davis. Hmm. Bravo. [chuckles] I’ve spent all my life raising my kids, building my practices. I’ve earned my respect. So it will be the word of a well-respected gentleman versus whatever you are. Here. First, how our son is being bullied. And what we plan to do about it. I’m stuck. Usually these speeches flow, but this one for the August 28th Foundation has me all tripped up. Oh, so why don’t you hit up Stu or Jason or any other of your old speechwriters? You know, nobody gets my voice quite like you do. Remember how you used to help me polish them up? Huh? Chess, son. Last time you were here, you mopped the floor with me. I’ve been itching for a rematch. Bet. Just don’t get all salty when you lose again, OG. [laughs] Come on. What happened with Tyrell? Well, I went to the kids’ school and I did some quiet recon. Tell me you didn’t talk to any students. That’s the last thing Tyrell would want. No, I didn’t go to his school and talk to his friends about it. I had a casual chat with the secretary about the D.C. United midfield, and then I exchanged recipes with the security officer. My husband the reporter. Always digging. A little to the right. I’d rather let somebody volunteer information than have them feel like I’m grilling them. Yeah, you’re smart like that. Thanks, mate. And? Well, there is some buzz about a couple fights that led to suspensions. My sources didn’t give me any names, and I didn’t want to reveal why I was asking, but… as far as I can tell, it had nothing to do with Tyrell. What about the school’s social media? Kids aren’t posting anywhere they think that parents can see. They have ways of locking down their chats, keeping them out of reach. Kids are pros at flying below the radar. And Tyrell is good at keeping to himself. He’s not good at the social game. Unlike his politically savvy pops. We can’t risk the possibility of our kid getting seriously hurt. I need to march right up at that school. Someone needs to be held accountable. [sighs] Nicole hyped you up so much, I was afraid I might not have a job to come back to. Oh, I’m sure that’s not true. We’re just gathering intel. I’ll follow your lead, but we shouldn’t wait too long. Agreed. Now we need to talk about… I completely forgot. We were going to talk about your hot new assignment. About the influencer. Okay. Um… Well, a few years ago, a beauty influencer was exposed for using his popularity to groom underage kids. Whoa. Was he charged? Only in the court of public opinion. They couldn’t pin anything on him except for a couple sketchy DMs, but he did lose a lot of brand deals. Well, at least that was some justice. From what I’m picking up, though, this may be part of a bigger pattern. There might be a whole network of influencers who are abusing their platforms. [scoffs] Abuse and corruption hidden by smiles and clout. Sounds like every day on Capitol Hill to me. You and I know that people aren’t necessarily what they seem, but kids, they don’t have the same guardrails up when it comes to their favorite social media personalities. That’s a good angle. Chelsea might have some insight, too. You’re right. I was gonna talk to her after the fashion show. Looks like you’re on a good track.

Not so fast. We still need to talk about why you thought I was a burglar. Ted and I can’t wait to have you back at 100%. The office just isn’t the same without you. How do you cause an accident, turn around for a second look, and not bother to help? There are definitely some questionable people out there, to say the least. For the last time, leave my wife out of this. That’s rich, Ted. [chuckles] You involved her the moment that you decided to play house with me on the side. And then you tossed me out like yesterday’s tabloids. Tabloids? Much more like a New York TimesBest Seller. Do you forget the hefty advance that I gave you on your way out? You know what I mean. What we had was real. You got me pregnant. But you just had to keep your little perfect life intact. I made a mistake. I admit that. I will always regret how I betrayed Nicole and my family. That’s all you care about? What about the family that you threw away with me? You’re right. I regret the pain that I caused you. I should have never let you think that I was gonna leave Nicole for you. But I still see the pain. I see you hurting. But I will not let you destroy what me and my wife have built. Not now. Everyone’s having a field day clowning me. Stuff like this blows up for a minute, and then everyone moves on. It won’t last. Nah, this one has legs. I can feel it. And I know what you’re thinking– that we should tell our dads, since they might see it. But school has a closed network. They’ll never come across it. But what if a teacher does? They might have to report it. They might let it ride. Right? Mind their business. It’s kind of in their job description to look out for us. You can’t tell our dads. Or them. Promise. I mean, look at the comments. They’re clowning me like it’s some sport. When you hit college, this won’t even be a thing. You get a clean slate. That’s forever from now. Stop torturing yourself. You’re better than this stupid photo. I can’t help it. I need to see what they’re saying. What who’s saying? I mean, if I was Vanessa, I would have been out, no questions asked. Hello? Earth to Ted. Are you with me? Of course. Vanessa. [chuckles] What about her? Well, um, we’ve been having some behavioral issues over at the clinic. It’s been on my mind all day. Oh, it’s all right. I was just saying, Vanessa thinks she’s figured out this whole mess with Joey Armstrong.

She called him out for lying about buying a house for his mom. You know, the one that you mentioned isn’t even alive. What did he say about that? Some convincing story that Vanessa bought. And you’re not convinced? Not one bit. It’s unsettling knowing that someone you love is mixed up with somebody so shady. So… what’s the latest dish up at Fairmont Crest? Mrs. Eldridge was three sheets to the wind before noon. I heard the poor server nearly dropped his tray of champagne when she was going off about her poor husband’s blue pills not working anymore.

[laughs] That’s good.

[laughs] Sorry for being late. I was at the hospital. What’d I miss? Oh, just another episode of… As the Country Club Turns. What hospital?

I hope everything’s all right.

Oh, I’m fine. I was visiting Laura. That, uh, poor girl that worked for Nicole. Oh. Well, I-I hope she recovers from that awful accident. It was just a follow-up to her orthopedic surgery. The good news is, she’ll be out tomorrow

and back at work soon.

Mm. JAN: Good for her. MONA: Not so good for Eva, though. She’s been on point, but I guess she knew it would always be temporary. Mm. We were just peeping the Drake and Kendrick Lamar beef. Everyone’s going in on it. Yeah, but we should probably leave it alone and get on our homework grind. How is your brother doing since his bike accident? You saw. His bruises are fading pretty quick. Well, falls like that, they can sometimes hurt on the inside, too. Kids from school, they saw him wipe out, right? Is anybody giving him a hard time about it? Not that I heard of. Okay. I’m just, I’m worried about Tyrell, is all. He didn’t want to talk about it the other night. You worry too much. [sighs] I am definitely not advising you to come clean about what happened. Nobody in this room thinks that that can end well for any of us. Least of all you. Your grandfather is just talking about your future. We just want you to think this through. My nightmares and plans for higher office are completely unrelated. VERNON: How can you be so sure? You were wondering why the memory of what happened suddenly got worse. This might be the answer staring you right in the face. What happened was terrible. But to have it exposed, for this secret to come out, will be worse than any bad dreams for you, your family, your children. I love my family. And I’ll never do anything intentionally to hurt them. Then consider what Granddad is saying. You could be having these dreams now because your gut is at war with your ambition. [scoffs] It’s not a naked ambition. I live every day knowing who I was named for and the legacy Granddad left us. I want to do good and make a difference– more than I can in Congress. Continue what you started. I hear you, Martin. I do. But don’t destroy yourself in the process. I don’t even know why I came over. I just needed a breather from Smitty. You all should be eating dinner soon. I should go. No, no, stay. Eat with us. No, I’m due at home.

I’ll let myself out.

ANITA: Martin. I have fear, Vernon. Fear that this isn’t going to end any other way than terribly. Look who I found lurking around our front doorstep. Thank you for making the extra trip. No trouble. I actually like having a reason to come back. Your house really feels like a home. And knowing Laura’s getting better, I guess my time enjoying all this is coming to an end. Boy, I’ll tell you, if I had something like this, I’d sure fight like hell to hold onto it. Well, I’ll leave you both to your evening. I’ll see you in the morning, Nicole. Good night. I know I say this often, but Eva has been such a find. Laura deserves to have her job back, but I sure wish we didn’t have to lose Eva. Do we? What do you mean? Between my practice and charity work, I’m busier than ever. Would it be so terrible to have two personal assistants? I better run. I want to say good night to Laura before visiting hours wrap up. Mm, right behind you. Leslie? Oh, you two go ahead. I’m gonna sit here and savor this wonderful coffee. Until next time, then. Take care, Leslie. [sighs] Well, sounds like the words are flowing more easily. I don’t know why. I can’t help worrying about Martin. But I did finally manage to land on what I’m trying to communicate. You want to hear it? I could listen to you give speeches all day long. That’s not how they felt about it in the Senate. [both laughing]

But here goes.

Okay. It is in times of turmoil that it is most important to go back to our roots and to remember those guiding principles that have always served us so well. Service, charity, justice. But most of all, love, life, family. Because family is the bedrock. It is the bar. The things we wish for and hope for for ourselves must also fit like a glove into that realm. We carry those we love with us on our backs, as they carry us upon theirs. Because we can never forget. When they struggle, we struggle. We must understand and never forget, struggle is a part of life. Sometimes it comes from us, from outside. And sometimes it’s a struggle of our own making. But whatever it is and whatever its source, it must be met head-on if we are to preserve that which is most dear to us. Sometimes we’re confused. We set ourselves on a course to meet that struggle, only to find our direction is wayward. A correction is needed. And we require courage. The courage to admit to this failing and the courage to set our sails to our true north. We can never forget there is real evil in this world. There is ill intent directed at us for any number of reasons. But to truly defeat it, we must examine its origins. Sometimes it’s hurt. Sometimes it’s a misunderstanding or a craving for retribution. But until we truly understand those who harbor those notions, my friends… …they will always have the advantage. They… will… persist.

Yeah. He did a simple nip-tuck on Armstrong’s mother. Mrs. Armstrong was of advanced age, so she died on his table. Ernie was so afraid of Joey that he skipped town. Well, that compounds my worry. He was freaked. What would Joey Armstrong gain by faking his mother’s… life? And what does he want with Vanessa? Someone’s intense. It’s not all baking cookies and collecting commissions. I take matching the right house to the right client seriously. And now you’re trying to play love match for a sketchy old guy. If Joey Armstrong’s old, he’s like fine wine. And if I trafficked in rumors, I wouldn’t be able to sell anyone a house in this town. Um, there’s a… saturation point where, when enough people are telling you something… …you should consider that there might be something there. Mm. Similarly, there’s a tipping point where your jealousy goes from very hot to not so hot. Shouldn’t you be off correcting some club member’s form? Bill Hamilton’s wife just canceled. I guess she finally realized Team Dani has canceled her. Derek? Oh. Hey, Hayley. I thought firefighters only rescued cats from trees in the movies. You’re in the lifestyle section of the Record. [laughs] It’s not much, really. I’m meeting Vanessa at the club, and then I have a call with Eva about plans for the anniversary party. We’re gonna talk catering and music. There’s some new DJ that she wants to run past me. Mm. Nicole, how is it that your “no appointments” would fill anyone else’s calendar? Hush and let me think I have a lazy afternoon for a change. How about you? Paperwork. And a consult with a 20-something-year-old model. Ah, spending time with a younger, beautiful woman.

[chuckles] I have to try to convince her that she doesn’t need more surgery.

And he insists that there’s nothing incriminating or nothing illegal.

That’s a relief, I suppose.

It is, but… I still worry about him. Worry about yourself, Doug. Like you said, Randy’s used to moving in that world. He knows how to stay safe in it. But you? Look at your concern for me. If you’re referring to Mr. Armstrong… Oh, Mr. Armstrong. I assure you, my relationship with him is squeaky-clean. I’ve been helping him buy a house for his elderly mother. Nothing remotely illegal about that. Fair enough. You’re bothered by it? Not if you aren’t. I’m sorry, I’ve been under a ton of stress. You’ve been working a lot. Yeah, I know. Hospital schedule’s kicking my butt. I’ve noticed. Maybe you should back off on the surgeries. Seems like you’re in the operating room at all hours of the day and night. Yes. [laughs] That situation won’t last much longer. I promise. Now, imagine what each of you can do with that much cash. Hmm? Could travel, start a business. And if you invest wisely, you might not have to work again. That’s unlikely. A million dollars doesn’t buy what it used to. True. True. That’s true. But if you do choose to work, you’re welcome back to the firm. With a hefty raise, of course.

We’ll take that under consideration.

Well, that’s not all, Naomi. [chuckles softly] Far from it. The firm recognizes that some of our policies and procedures might need review, and we’d like for you all to help us make the workplace better for the rest of the employees. And what would that look like? Well, we want to set up a committee to review our anti-harassment policies, and you three would be that committee. Yeah. You’d be responsible for letting us know how and where we can improve. And Mike Davis will be the first to toe the line and will follow any recommendations that you make. This firm is committed to a zero tolerance policy with respect to inappropriate behavior.

So nothing like what seems to have happened to you all…

NAOMI: No, no, no, no. There’s no “seems” about it. …will ever happen to anyone else at this firm. Not on my watch. Do we have a deal? I’d like to confer with my clients. Alone. Of course. Feel free to use my office. Oh, and don’t worry– there are no hidden microphones or cameras in here. I’ll have Caroline bring in coffee and pastries. Becky, you’re fond of the chocolate chip muffins from Orphey Gene’s, right? I am. Thanks. Great. Oh. [chuckles softly] I don’t know how it slipped my mind, but I took the liberty of drafting up a settlement agreement. This way, if you decide to put this matter to rest today and get your money as soon as possible, we can expedite that for you. Subject to your review, of course. Oh, of course.

We can’t thank you enough. To get an offer like that without even going to court? That never would have happened without you, Naomi. This seems like good news, but let’s look this over before we get too excited.

[chuckling] Whoa! Doug. [chuckles] Oh. Sorry. I wasn’t paying attention. Where are you off to in such a hurry? I got some business I need to handle. Is everything okay? You seem a little… anxious. Keep your shrink hat off. We’re just talking here. Nicole, I’m fine. I was not psychoanalyzing you. I’m just showing concern for a friend. After almost knocking you down and clapping back, I understand why. I’m here to assure you, there’s no cause for alarm. The other day, uh, Vanessa mentioned that you’re working morning, noon, and night. Maybe you should take some time off. Doctor’s orders? If I need to prescribe a vacation, I’d be happy to. I know Vanessa would jump at the chance of having some downtime with you. I don’t know about that. Ships passing in the night seems to work for us. I was under the impression that she misses you. Well, she does. Until I’m underfoot 24-7. I’m sure Ted gets on your nerves from time to time. Uh, hey, we are talking about you and Vanessa here. Ah. So that’s a yes.

[chuckling] Well, you had something to do. I’m taking up way too much of your time. This is a good reminder how I need to slow down and just breathe. And obviously watch where I’m going. My father swung the million-dollar number at you, but that’s nowhere near what you’ll be taking home. Because of your share. We understand that. Not just that. When you get a lump sum check like that, you pay a massive amount in taxes. Okay, I get that. But we’ll make a lot more with the raises when we get our jobs back. Do you really want to return to a firm that has fired you once already? Because there’s nothing in here that will keep Bill Hamilton from firing you the day after he hires you back. Think about it. No matter how good you are at your job, they can and likely will find fault. They’ll gather evidence, excuses to fire you again and in a way that you can’t complain about. But we’ll be running the committee and reviewing the firm’s policies. Once we improve things around there, the other employees will be grateful to us. NAOMI: What makes you think the firm will listen to anything you say? That Mike Davis will actually change his ways? Once you give up your claims against the firm and waive your right to pursue any further legal action related to the issue, you put your fates back in Bill Hamilton’s hands. What about this one? It’s nice. Nice. Okay. It would be helpful if you could tell me a little more about your mother’s taste. Well, it’s difficult to describe, but… I’ll know it when I see it. Fine. [chuckles softly] She can be a bit ornery. Okay. Well, uh, sounds like a woman with some pepper. I look forward to meeting her. You do? Of course. We strong ladies need to stick together. I’m sure when I take her to check out some properties, we’ll get along great. I’m sure. I didn’t realize our reservation was for three. Did you clock their expressions when I dropped the million-dollar offer? They were stunned.

What? You read the… you read the settlement. You knew what was coming. I’m not talking about today. When it first came across my desk, I couldn’t believe how much you were offering each plaintiff. Listen, I want to make this whole thing go away as quickly and quietly as possible. Well, I do think you want to repair the rift between you and your daughters. And facing Naomi in court would have the opposite effect. Look, I’ll admit that… maybe that notion was in the back of my mind when I was considering the settlement, but that wasn’t my priority. You know, what I considered was how a harassment and hostile work environment lawsuit would affect my firm. I’ll pay any price to preserve my legacy.

My daughters. You know? You got to have at least one parent to look up to and be proud of. It’s not gonna be Dani Dupree, with her gun-waving, golf club-slinging, left hook-having ass. Naomi definitely takes after you. She came in hot with the law on her side… threatening to have you disbarred from meeting with her clients without her. And you can expect a bonus for your conciliatory gesture in there.

All in a day’s work.

Oh. Then I don’t have to worry about the bonus. Uh, nice try, Counselor. Now you have to double it. [chuckles] Ah, well played. Little something I picked up watching you and Naomi spar when she was in law school.

[chuckles softly] Most people eat cheesy puffs and watch game shows on a study break. She’d come here and argue cases with you,

sharpening her skills.

Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Boy, she was a… she was a spitfire. Yeah, she still is. You know, part of me wants to-to get in the courtroom against her, go toe to toe, see who comes out on top. And if she keeps pushing, I’m telling you, that’s what’s gonna happen. And I will not back down. I didn’t have mercy on her when she was a student. I will not have mercy on her now when she has her own shingle.

No, my gut tells me it won’t come to that.

Mm. I worked with those women for years. I bet Carrie is online buying shoes as we speak. [chuckles softly] Like you said, it’s an offer they won’t want to refuse. They won’t. But Naomi might. I don’t know. It sounded so great when he explained it to us. He’s a lawyer. That’s his job. The money would be really sweet, though. And to get our jobs back. If they treat us right. NAOMI: That’s a big if. What was it like for you, walking back in here today? Well, none of the other women made eye contact with us. And how long do you think it’ll take for that to die down

after you get back?

[scoffs] A while. Since we’ll be riding high off our hefty payday. None of the other support staff will ever see this kind of money. We wouldn’t have even seen it if Mike wasn’t a perv. STEFANIA: Nobody needs to know how much money we got. We can make the terms confidential. Do you think they’ll stay that way?

Carrie: Oh, it’ll get out. I mean, none of us will blab, but… Mike still works here. And when we walked in… What? Did he confront you? What did he say? Not one thing.

He just stared.

[groans] I already thought he was skeevy, and I’d never have wanted to be alone with him again. But now? Now he hates us. Do we really want to face that every day? He’s just one partner.

How do you think the other partners will react?

Carrie: You know Mike would turn the others against us. And that wouldn’t take much, especially since the $3 million would be coming out of all their pockets. Okay. In light of everything we’ve discussed, what are your thoughts? That, despite all that, I could really use the money. Even after taxes, there’d be enough left over to buy a house. Pay off student loans. And hospital bills. Whatever you want, that’s what we’ll do. Naomi, I have a question. Ask me anything. Are you telling us to turn down the settlement because it’s good for us? Or good for you? Which patient is keeping you up tonight? Guess. [chuckles softly] Sherry Carter again? What is it with you and that lady? I don’t know. That’s the problem. A woman is suicidal but is convinced after talking with me for mere minutes that she can face and handle all of her problems without any further assistance from me? Maybe she’s seeing someone else. None of the colleagues that I recommended. I checked. And she sought me out again. To confirm how well she’s doing. If the woman doesn’t want help, your hands are tied. I hear you now. And I heard what you said before. I won’t try to find her. That’s a start, at least. But she is a mystery I can’t crack. I read Senator Dupree’s book. He’s a very inspiring man, as is his daughter. I will let my father know he has yet another fan. You do that. Vanessa, I’ll be in touch soon about what we discussed. Of course, Mr. Armstrong. Ladies. Joey Armstrong? Really? Before you start talking trash about my client, remember, he’s read your daddy’s book. That was slick. I’ll give him that. He’s more than that, Nicole. He’s well-read, considerate, observant. [sighs] Great cook. How well have you gotten to know him? He’s a client. Period.

And his reputation?

The man is innocent until proven guilty. And commissions can come from any damn body. I know people speculate about Joey, but he’s really a sweet guy. He wants to buy a home for his elderly mom. That’s laudable. And he is a charmer. I will give him that. And I’m sure you admire more than just his charm. Eh. I can take or leave him. I just watched you drool over the man while he walked away. It is a nice view. Okay, the guy is fine. Better? Yeah. And dangerous. I suppose Joey Armstrong might tend to walk on the wild side, based on some of what I’ve read in my research.

Due diligence?

I research all my clients. And I even watched a few of his cooking videos. He’s got a great recipe for tortellini. And are you tempted by his tortellini? Girl, you know me. I’m always tempted. [chuckles softly] Whether I act on it or not is another story. Yeah, I know you stray. Just like I know you don’t. And, still, you’re my dearest friend. Why is that? Opposites attract. You ground me, and I spice up your humdrum life.

[scoffs, chuckles]

[chuckles] So tell me about your plans for your upcoming anniversary. I want to see if I approve. Oh, Ted and I, we’re gonna mark the day with a quiet little dinner. But Eva, my temporary assistant– you met her– convinced us that some kind of a celebration is in order. So we’re just gonna throw a little party here at the country club. Do you approve? I always approve of festivities

that involve me drinking champagne.

[chuckles] And you and Ted and your sickeningly happy marriage particularly deserve to be honored. I cannot believe how fast time goes by. It feels like yesterday Ted and I met at the medical conference on Maui. [sighs] After that very first night, where we watched the sunrise together. No wonder you knew Ted was your forever person. Oh, from the second I laid eyes on him. I felt like that about Doug once. Doug had game. Whatever game he once had has long since ended. The audience has left the bleachers and gone home. Okay. Real talk– if you don’t love Doug anymore, why don’t you just make a clean break? Okay. So… what’s the verdict? What? We’ll take our chances in court. And you taught me to do the same. You taught me to challenge it and to study it and to respect its power. Not because it was perfect but… because it could be a tool to create something better. I don’t hate you, Dad. I’m very glad to hear you say that. What I need you to hear is that bringing this lawsuit is not an attack on you. I am just being the lawyer you raised me to be, doing my duty as an attorney to serve my clients… To the best of your ability. And you completely disregarded that pledge by rejecting a perfectly reasonable and beneficial settlement offer. It was full of holes, and you know it. You’re doing this for yourself, Naomi…

…not them. And indulging in a-a petty personal vendetta at the expense of the women you represent. And you’re doing this for your mother. Who is not your client. All to get back at me. Yes, I love my mother. And, yes, you damn well did her wrong. Sleeping with someone I consider a friend, then divorcing her to marry the little cheat. But, Dad, this isn’t about you. It was like, it was like you were running on air, and nothing could stop you from protecting your girls. You put one under each arm, got back just as fast, and they weren’t even scared. Yeah, both of them were laughing. Yeah, well, I couldn’t have them scared like that. I told them I was racing to see who was faster, me or the wind.

It almost took down that cherry tree, but the house… it was still standing.

Yeah, but if we expose him publicly, don’t you think that would make him less inclined to make things right? Financially speaking? Shaming him in public will force him to give you your birthright. Um, Nicole asked me to sign her out of her hospital email, and I just stopped because this candlestick was at the end of the mantle, and Nicole usually keeps it with the other one. Oh. The housekeeper probably moved it when she was cleaning. No worries. Always happens. But that’s not your job. I don’t need you around here, tidying things up. Well, you and Nicole have been so kind to me. It makes me want to go above and beyond. Everyone in the family loves the amazing job that you’re doing around here. Everybody but Kat, maybe. Look, I’ve tried to be friendly, but it’s like she despises me. She’s still upset about that dress, and that was Nicole’s idea. [sighs] And I tried to explain that, but it’s like she wasn’t buying it at all. So, things have gotten worse, not better. Yeah, and I’ve tried to bend over backwards to be friends with her. I do not know what else to do. Kat’s an amazing woman, but it takes her a while to open up to outsiders. Is that what I am? An outsider? Not to Nicole, not to me. But you have to understand that she wasn’t here to witness the amazing job that you did on her mom’s event. Right. She’s an entrepreneur, had a business meeting. Yeah, Kat’s very busy. She has a side gig that she’s doing with Chelsea and helping me to manage my practice. Let’s just say that she’s overworked and overprotective of our family. Must be nice to have a family to feel that way about. [chuckles] We’ve spoiled her. We’ve always given her everything that she wants. Kat is definitely a daddy’s girl. [scoffs] Just like me. Right. You wound me. I’m protecting you. I was a wide-eyed rookie once, aching to be top cop. I’m new to this department, not the force. I’m not a rookie, I’m just not you. I’m giving you some advice here. Ah, there he is. I’m sorry. My bad. Jekyll and Hyde much? I’m saying, you be you. You want to protect the public, get the bad guys? Don’t ever settle or look the other way. Mm-hmm. Smitty, I am not keeping anything else from you, I swear. Okay. But I need you to get that it is not cool for you to unilaterally decide that I shouldn’t take that job. I get it. I do. And while I think that you understand the importance of media in general, I don’t think you understand the importance of journalism to me personally.

I don’t think you do. Otherwise, you would have never taken for granted that I would just give up my career when we become parents. You did that voluntarily. I thought it was just temporary. I always thought that when our kids went back to high school, I would jump back in the saddle, but for some reason, that never happened. You were the primary caregiver. Not by choice. By default. But you’re better at it than me. Because I put in the time. Okay. Yeah, you do. But I am every bit as concerned about them as you are. It’s hard enough being a teenager, but I’m afraid of any change to the stability of their lives. And yes, you provide the stability. It’s gonna mess things up. Isn’t you running for president gonna be a harder adjustment than me going back to work at a job that I can basically do from home? I guess, if it actually happens. If you want something to happen, Martin, it happens. Then we have to make sure to keep Samantha and Tyrell from the fray. Protect them at all costs. Family first. Eva’s job, Anna, is to assist my mother, not be my bestie. [scoffs] Sounds to me like she has her priorities messed up. You’re taking this the wrong way. I’m trying to figure out what’s going on. And… if Eva is being oversensitive or paranoid. Because of her sad childhood. But then I thought, everyone likes Eva. That may be true in her personal life, but she’s out of her element working as an assistant to someone as high-profile as my mother. She doesn’t have any prior experience, so, yeah, it has been a bit awkward. All I’m saying is that if you feel Eva isn’t up to speed, with you knowing what it’s like to have a new job, why not help her? You’d be helping your mother out, too. But you’re choosing not to. Why is that? You’ve got this all wrong. Eva is the problem, not me. EVA: I see why Kat has a hard time getting me. You do? Sure. I didn’t grow up in a house like this, for one thing. Maybe, but he’s my black hole. I have loved him for so long, I don’t know anything else. He is my first, my last, and my only love. I didn’t betray you, Naomi. Our friendship was the real deal. I couldn’t help falling in love with Bill. Like you had no choice? I’ve known you a long time. Besides, what did it matter if you fell in love? What about doing the right thing, huh? My dad was married. You could have kept your drawers on. Oh, you sure love passing judgment. I’m a home-wrecker. Bill subverts the law to get his clients off the hook, but you’re the one playing fast and loose with the law, bringing this frivolous suit so you can pursue your vendetta against your dad for the crime of falling in love with me. I didn’t think you were this petty. [scoffs] I’m just meeting my dad where he is. In the sewer with you. But make no mistake, our suit is not frivolous. You want to play it this way? Fine, but you won’t win this. Don’t start nothing won’t be nothing. But there is something, Hayley. Sexual harassment and discrimination. The law offices of Bill Hamilton, Esquire, will crush you in court. And when we win, we will sue you for attorney fees. We’ll bankrupt that tiny little firm and put you dead out of business. What problems could a sweet girl like Eva possibly cause? Well, she always has an excuse for being overly involved in my parents’ lives, for one thing. What’s going on between Eva and your parents? What kind of question is that? A logical one. Since you’re saying she’s over-involved, I’m asking for an example. Okay. One day, she popped up in my mother’s office at the hospital when she was supposed to be working at my mom’s house. She’s always got her hands in things that are outside of her duties. Not that it’s any of your business. She’s probably being diligent. Aren’t you, when you’re managing your father’s office? Sure, but… this is different. Anyway, time will tell if I’m right about this. Meanwhile, can you get a message to Eva for me? Sure. If Eva really wants to get along better with me, she’ll respect the boundaries of her job and stop crossing so many lines. LESLIE: Mm. Marcel. You told him to take it easy on me, ’cause he went from being a jerk to bringing me coffee and telling me to be true to my ideals. He doesn’t even talk like that. Hmm. Wasn’t me. Pops, out of respect, tell me the truth.

Why would I lie?

To protect me. But I could fight my own battles. Maybe, but don’t fight this one. I don’t understand. There’s nothing to understand. Leave it alone or I’ll assign you a new partner. Do you know why I like journalism? It is one of the only ways to really speak truth to power, and I can’t wait to just roll up my sleeves and start digging in on a good story. Here’s a little thought experiment. What if you announce that you’re gonna run for president and my editor assigns me to investigate you? [chuckles] It wouldn’t happen. It’s a conflict of interest. And if my campaign takes off, you might be reassigned to restaurant reviews. Yeah, heaven help me. Unless it’s Orphey Gene’s, of course. Besides, you already know everything there is to know about my past. Yeah, probably. But do not give me or anyone else a reason to start digging. [chuckles]

Nicole: It’s possible to get back out there again, Dani. What’s the point? I feel what I feel.

It’s valid to feel what you feel. Emotions just don’t go away overnight, and that’s okay. But sometimes, exploring those feelings and understanding them better, it can open the door to change. You sound like such a psychiatrist right now. Okay, let’s roll with that. Indulge me. For a moment, let me be your therapist. Oh, Nicole. For a role-play. It’ll be fun. You be you, and I’ll be a date. This is dumb. How many dumb things have I done to make you happy? And do you honestly think that Bill, of all people, is worth holding on to all this pain for? I’m saying you need to dig deep inside and ask yourself, could you really be with Bill again after the horrible way he treated you? When I think about Bill, I don’t remember the bad times. Selective amnesia. Let me remind you. He screwed Hayley, threw her in your face, and rejected you. Could you really let Bill back into your life, much less your bed? In a heartbeat. Like you said, I’m an addict. I tried to go cold turkey, but I still have cravings. I don’t think I’ll ever get over him. That makes me really sad. It makes me even sadder. You think your empty threats got me quaking in my boots? HAYLEY: If you were smart, you would be. Oh, you don’t want to compare your IQ to mine, Hayley. Mm-mm. The facts are on my side. Sexual harassment in the workplace is illegal. The appropriate remedy to a civil offense is a lawsuit. My clients have every right to take Mike Davis, their harasser, to court, along with the firm that employs him. We will prevail. You know, I came to talk to you out of respect for the friendship we had. But if you are determined to go after the law firm… the gloves are coming off. Well, thank you. I hoped you’d see me that way. But I think Eva got over on you. You should be careful around her. There’s no point in continuing this conversation. I couldn’t agree more.
