(about John’s funeral)
Tate: Is Kristen here?
Brady: No, no. She thought your grandmother might flip out if she came so in a rare moment of generosity, she stayed at home.

(about John playing baseball)
Paul: He may have missed that pass, but man, he had mad skills when he was on that diamond. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if he played pro ball in a past life. Maybe he threw a pitch or two for his favorite team. The New York Yankees.

Eric: As you all know, there’s nothing you could really do to stop Sami Brady from speaking her mind.

(about John)
Brady: There is one attribute of my father that I don’t think Timothy had anything to do with. And I would be remiss today if I didn’t mention it because I think we would all agree. It is essential John Black. I can sum it up in one word—eyebrow. I’m serious. I’m serious. My dad had many, many skills—spy craft, marital arts, baseball. But I think the use of his eyebrow was perhaps his single greatest asset. Not only was it effective, but extremely versatile.

Kayla: There’s no way you were well enough to leave the hospital.
Bo: What are you, a doctor or something?

(to Jennifer)
Julie: You don’t have to apologize to me. We have tissue. After Doug passed away, I bought them in bulk.

(to Xander)
EJ: I never got to shake your hand after the results of the board vote came in, seeing as you were in handcuffs.

(to Belle)
EJ: You know if this whole DA thing doesn’t work out, you have a knack for improv.

Kate said she wanted him to wake up so she could have Xander arrested. Maggie and Sarah talked about John’s service. While they were talking, Sarah talked about Xander and his mother. She said she thought Xander changed and was shocked that he didn’t. Sarah said she loved him but that wasn’t enough. She said she felt guilty about what she did to Xander, but he did what she thought he would do. Sarah said Xander had her second guessing herself since he said what she did was worse. She said he told her that she let him bond with Philip. Maggie said Xander was making excuses. Sarah said she might not be able to resist his pull on her. She thought it would be better if she and Victoria left town. Maggie said that might cost her Victoria since Xander had parental rights. Sarah decided to talk to Xander.

When Xander wanted to see Victoria, Sarah stopped him and told him Victoria was down for the night. Sarah told him he brought this on himself and said she made the rules. An upset Xander told Sarah that she was the reason why Philip got attacked. Belle went to the police station and told Jada that she wanted to put Philip and EJ’s attackers in jail. She said she had a case against Xander. Shawn showed up to talk to Jada. When Belle left, Shawn apologized for lying about being sick. Jada said Belle told her what happened, and she was happy that Bo was better even though it was at John’s expense. Belle ran into EJ at the town square. He wanted her to tell him if she didn’t want to see him or talk to him anymore. Belle apologized and said it wasn’t the right time. Days of Our Lives Update

Days of Our Lives logo

Update written by Joseph

PART THREE

Eric takes the stand at John’s funeral and talks about how even after he found out John wasn’t his father, they maintained a strong connection. Eric calls John a mentor for all of his kids and says presiding over John’s service has been one of the greatest honors of his life as well as one of the hardest things he’s ever had to do. Eric gives hugs and kisses on the cheek to Marlena, Belle, and Carrie.

Bo complains that he needs to be at John’s funeral. Hope argues that everyone will understand and that Shawn is there representing them. Bo feels it’s not the same and that he needs to pay respects to John in person. Hope points out that the service has already started. Bo argues that they aren’t that far away and can still make it. Hope believes that John wouldn’t want Bo to leave the hospital until he’s completely ready to. Hope worries that if something happens to Bo, then all of John’s sacrifice will have all been in vain.

Eric returns to the podium and says that his twin sister Sami wanted to be there but announces that she will instead be joining them virtually. Eric adds that you can’t stop Sami from speaking her mind, so she sent him a message to read. Eric reads Sami’s message, saying that for years she told everyone that John ruined her life and tore apart her family until she came to her senses and realized how wrong she was. Sami wrote about the memories and the lessons John taught her so he actually made her life infinitely better. Sami thanked John for loving her and her family while apologizing for being a total nightmare and ended her message that she will always love John and she already misses him. Carrie gets up and hugs Eric as she takes the podium next. Carrie talks about John and Marlena successfully blending their families. Carrie cries about John being like a father to her. Carrie brings up when John and Marlena got remarried in 1999 and how they had each of them bring up a different flower to represent how important they were to the family. Carrie announces they want to recreate that ritual in memory John and as a symbol to Marlena’s enduring love for him.

Bo tells Hope that he would not leave the hospital if there was a chance of endangering his life, insisting he wouldn’t risk their future together but declares that he has to be at the funeral for John. Bo adds that John has always been there for them and he knows Hope wants to be at the service just as much as he does. Bo states that John was like a brother to them, so he asks for the car keys. Hope agrees to get the car but warns that if she sees the slightest hint that it’s too much for him, they are coming right back.

Carrie announces that since Sami couldn’t attend, she gave her blessing for Paul to take her place in the ritual. Marlena flashes back to the 1999 wedding and hears John’s words as Belle goes first with a daisy. Brady goes next with a sunflower. Paul delivers the rose and Eric follows with the snapdragon. Carrie goes last with the orchid to Marlena and John’s words from 1999. Brady stands to acknowledge John’s father, Timothy Robicheaux and talks about what they meant to each other despite finding each other later in life. Brady talks about John’s many skills and jokes about his famous eyebrow as he makes everyone laugh with his impressions. Brady talks about John’s identity being a mystery for a long time and how he was haunted by his past, but when he met Timothy, he exorcised those ghosts and was certain about who he was. Brady calls John the world’s greatest dad and he got to know that all his life. Brady is grateful that John got to experience that for himself briefly as he then takes his seat. They look to Marlena, who then stands up to take the podium. Marlena states that she didn’t plan to speak today and holds back tears as she mentions expressing her feelings to John before he died. Marlena shares the poem “Seasons of Love” as one that meant a lot to her and John. Marlena says she will have their seasons of love in her heart forever. Marlena talks about surviving the obstacles in their life because their love brought them through. Marlena really believes they will survive this now as their love will bring them through. Marlena tearfully says “Goodnight, my love” to the portrait of John. Eric returns to the podium for another prayer but Hope and Bo arrive, surprising everyone. Kayla questions what Bo is doing there. Hope responds that once she told him what happened, there was no stopping him. Hope hugs Marlena and says she’s so sorry as there are no words. Bo apologizes for the interruption but felt he had to be there for Marlena and John. Bo asks if it’s not too late for him to say something. Marlena says she would love that as Bo hugs her.

Bo then takes to the podium and talks about when John first came to them and they didn’t really know who he was. Bo recalls fighting with John until he almost went off a cliff but John saved him. Bo calls John a powerful man but says his true power was his huge heart and compassion no matter what you were going through. Bo holds back tears as he acknowledges that John sacrificed his life for him and gave him time. Bo declares that John didn’t just save his life, but made it possible to save life after life. Bo says John may not be here with them, but his gift of life will go on and on. Bo declares that’s a fact and that he will carry John with him always as he cries for John to rest in peace. Eric stands up and thanks everyone for coming. Eric invites everyone to the Brady Pub to continue the celebration of John’s life. Marlena stands and tells Eric that he did a beautiful job and that John would’ve been proud as they hug. Kayla embraces Bo but worries there was no way he was well enough to leave the hospital as he could really jeopardize his recovery. Bo responds that he would’ve felt much worse if he didn’t get to pay tribute to someone who felt like his brother. Chanel comments that Johnny looked a little distress when Kayla talked about John’s legacy living on through all of them. Johnny says the way he’s behaved lately falls way short, so he thinks John would be disappointed in him. Chanel feels he’s being too hard on himself and encourages him of all the good changes he’s made lately. Kate declares that John will always hold a special place in her heart as he was a true friend. Kate cries that she doesn’t know what they will do without him as Roman hugs her. Marlena flashes back to John bringing her favorite flowers to her at work as she sees the same type of flowers at the funeral and wonders who sent them. Brady comments on John giving his love to Isabella. Belle talks to Shawn about how she was just encouraging him not to give up hope on his dad, because her dad was coming home and Shawn said he thought two miracles was too much to hope for and he was right. Shawn says he’s so sorry as they hug. Hope talks to Bo about her and John having a special bond because of everything Stefano put them through, so they really understood each other. Hope looks at the photos of John and cries that she will miss everything about him, especially his kindness and his stories. Hope says she always looked up to John like a big brother and he’s with the angels now as Bo hugs her. Kayla tells Marlena that she checked with the hospital and the gold coin that was in John’s room isn’t there and seems to have disappeared. Marlena says not to worry about it as the coin was meant to be a sign of hope that John would recover and that hope is gone. Kayla says she’s so sorry as she hugs Marlena.

At John’s funeral, Chanel talks to Tate about him having the same stories about John as Johnny does. Chanel asks how everything is going with the baby. Tate says it’s good and that the hospital tour made things feel real. Chanel asks if they’ve found another family yet for adoption. Tate says they haven’t, but they really need to because they don’t have much time left. Johnny tells Marlena that the livestream is setup so that everyone who cared about John will have a chance to say goodbye to him. Marlena asks how Johnny is doing and says that her children and grandchildren are what’s really important to her now. Johnny tells Marlena that she’s pretty important to all of them too. Marlena questions the strain between Johnny and EJ but Johnny doesn’t want to talk about EJ since today is about a good honorable man. Steve and Abe talk about their respective adventures with John. Steve declares that when the pressure was on, there was no better partner than John Black. Eric announces to everyone that the service is about to begin.

Brady asks if Rachel is ready to sit down but Rachel cries that she’s not ready to say goodbye to John. Marlena tells her that she doesn’t want to say goodbye to John either but encourages her to think about him, remember him, and hold him in her heart. Marlena gives Rachel the baseball card of John’s to remember him by. Brady thanks her and tells Rachel that they can go home if it’s too much for her. Tate says that Brady has to stay, so he offers to have he and Arianna take Rachel home which they agree with. Rachel tells Brady to remember John will always be in his heart as they hug. Tate and Arianna then exit with Rachel. Brady and Marlena go and take their seats in the front row next to Belle and Carrie. Eric then begins the ceremony by leading everyone in prayer. Eric calls this a home going service and says John is going to his eternal home, welcomed by Shawn and Caroline and all those who loved him as everyone holds back tears. Kate arrives and takes her seat next to Roman as Eric continues the service, reading a passage from the Bible. Shawn arrives and takes his seat, exchanging looks with Belle.

Hope brings Bo outside in a wheelchair where he had a picnic setup for them. Hope questions how Bo managed to pull this off when he’s still recovering. Bo admits he had help from Ciara and Chelsea. Hope comments that he’s still the same romantic he always was. Bo says it’s supposed to be a happy surprise but asks Hope what’s wrong. Hope says it’s nothing and wants to enjoy the picnic but Bo says not until she tells him what’s going on. Hope then admits it’s about John. Bo asks if he’s in some kind of trouble. Hope reveals that John is gone which Bo questions before coming to the realization.

Brady leads John’s funeral in singing “Amazing Grace”. Abe, Steve, and Shane stand up together as Abe explains that the three of them each represent a phase of John’s professional life since Abe worked with John at the Salem police department, Shane was John’s boss at the ISA, and Steve was John’s partner at Black Patch. Abe states that whether John was a cop, a spy, or a private investigator, he always fought for justice even if it meant risking his own life. Shane talks about the many commendations over the years. Steve declares that the mission that was most important to John was protecting his family and friends which is why it’s so fitting that his final act of courage was to save the life of a man he considered a brother. Abe talks about loyalty being a big part of John’s character. Abe says he left the police department a long time ago, but John always called him partner. Shane declares that they will remember John as a loyal friend and a true hero as the world is a safer place because of him.

Bo angrily states that John is dead because of him. Hope argues that nothing was going to stop John from helping Shawn and Steve get the drug. Bo complains that John had to know it was dangerous and that they all risked their lives for him. Bo asks why Hope waited so long to tell him. Hope says he had already been hit with so much. Bo can’t imagine what Marlena is going through. Hope says she talked to her this morning and she’s been strong and stoic but she’s still in shock so it hasn’t quite hit her yet. Kayla says that John became their brother by heart and talks about how John never hesitated to help someone in need. Kayla cries that John saved Bo’s life which Roman calls one in the long list of things that they will always be grateful to John for. Kayla talks about the relationship and connection John always had with their parents. Kayla brings up John naming Brady after their family and calls John one of the best men she’s ever known. Kayla declares that John’s legacy is in all of them as Roman hugs her. Belle goes to the podium to speak next. Belle talks about John being a superhero to her. Belle talks about how funny John was as well and says she’s going to try to laugh some today instead of cry because she thinks that’s what John would want. Belle declares that John is still the man as she tearfully rejoins Marlena in her seat.

Bo checks in with the doctor and asks if they are good to go but the doctor says she cannot release him. Bo argues that she said there’s technically nothing wrong with him. She says that his body is still recovering and exits the room. Bo complains to Hope that the doctor doesn’t understand. Hope understands how he feels and wishes they could be there but she just got him back and can’t lose him again, so they need to be smart, safe, and listen to the doctor.

Paul takes the podium next at John’s funeral. Paul talks about being relatively new to the family and not finding out that John was his dad until he was an adult. Paul talks about baseball bringing he and John together and those are some of the memories he will cherish most with him. Everyone responds to the New York Yankees being John’s favorite team while Paul talks about how he was also a big fan of the Chicago Cubs. Paul praises John’s ability to pivot and goes over the many things John had been through from amnesia to paralysis to a long lost son. Paul states that a baseball game could go on forever, but off the field, time sadly runs out. Paul wishes he could’ve spent more time with John and that he’d be there when he and Andrew get married. Paul talks about John making him feel loved and accepted, so every time he sees a rainbow up high or a baseball in the sky, he will think of his dad. Paul cries that he can’t wait to play another game of baseball with him again and then returns to his seat.

PART ONE

Kayla joins Steve at the Brady Pub and tells him that she talked to Bo and he sounded wonderful. Kayla adds that it’s going to be really hard to keep the news about John from him. Steve agrees but says they can’t do anything to set back his recovery. Kayla asks how it went at the office as she assumed he packed up John’s things. Steve confirms that he has a lot of boxes in the car, but not all of John’s because he packed up his own stuff too which Kayla questions. Steve then announces that he’s shutting down Black Patch.

Brady is with Rachel at the DiMera Mansion as they prepare for John’s funeral. Rachel stops and says she doesn’t want to go.

Eric joins Belle, Carrie, and Paul in the town square. Eric talks about being nervous to officiate John’s service as he’s a little rusty. Carrie assures there’s no one they’d rather have than him. Eric just wishes he didn’t have to do it. Belle brought tissues and mints as they joke about always being prepared. Paul says John was the best at keeping everyone’s spirits up. They take their coffees and toast to John.

John’s funeral is set up outside the church with a table of his various photos surrounded by flowers. Shane Donovan joins Marlena there and tells her that he’s so sorry as they hug. Marlena thanks him for coming. Shane assures he wouldn’t be anywhere else and calls John the finest agent he ever worked with. Shane talks about the loss for the agency and of a lifelong friend. Marlena assures John felt the same about him. Marlena thanks Shane for bringing John home and making sure she had a chance to say goodbye. Shane’s son Andrew joins them and tells Marlena that he’s so sorry for her loss. Marlena thanks him and says they both mean the world to her and John. Eric, Carrie, Belle, and Paul arrive. Shane acknowledges Paul as his future son in law as Paul hugs him and Marlena. Marlena asks Belle where Brady is. Belle thinks he went to pick up Rachel, but she’s surprised he’s not there.

Brady tells Rachel that he knows it’s a sad day, but everyone’s expecting them at the church. Rachel responds that she can’t go because she doesn’t feel good. Brady points out that she was fine five seconds ago so Rachel admits it’s not that she doesn’t feel good, but she feels like she is bad luck. Rachel blames herself for John dying. Brady questions why she would say that. Rachel explains that she dreamed about John dying and then it came true. Brady assures that John did not die because she dreamed of it. Brady thinks John came to her in her dream to say goodbye one last time. Rachel cries that she can’t believe she’s never going to see him again. Brady encourages that it doesn’t mean that he won’t be with them all the time because he’ll always be in their hearts. Brady suggests they go give John a proper goodbye and hugs her as she cries.

Tate and Arianna walk through the town square together. Arianna hopes they aren’t late. Tate encourages that the service doesn’t start for awhile. Arianna is nervous as this is her first funeral and she doesn’t know what to expect. Tate assures that he and the rest of the family will be there for her. Arianna says that’s what she’s worried about as Will isn’t too happy with her right now which Tate questions. Arianna asks Tate to run interference so that Will doesn’t lecture her the whole time after disappearing the other night which Tate also questions. Arianna explains that she went out and had some fun with a guy who will remain nameless for now. Tate agrees not to say anything as he advises Arianna to be careful because she doesn’t want to end up like him, with a baby on the way.

Kayla questions Steve shutting down Black Patch. Steve says that John is gone, so it’s not Black Patch anymore and he can’t do it without his partner. Kayla understands but calls it a really big decision. Steve asks if she’s not happy about this. Kayla says they both know she hated how dangerous his job is, but he loves his work so she doesn’t know if this is the time. Steve admits he does love the work but it is time. Kayla questions what he will do since he will go stir crazy just staying at home. Steve says retiring doesn’t mean he will sit around the house all day. Steve points out he could do volunteer work, go play his harp in the park or take some guitar lessons. Steve tells Kayla that when she retires and it’s just them, they’ll still have their favorite way of being busy as they kiss. Kayla says they should probably get to St. Luke’s and lay out John’s memorabilia for the service. Steve stops and mentions that he hasn’t seen Marlena since they were all in John’s hospital room, so he doesn’t know what to say to her. Kayla urges him not to feel guilty as Marlena doesn’t blame him. Roman comes over and assures that no one blames Steve and they are all grateful for what he did to save Bo. Steve says he appreciates that. Kayla asks Roman where Kate is. Roman says she’s at the hospital with Philip and she’s been too worried to leave his side. Roman assures that Kate wouldn’t miss John’s funeral so she will meet them there. Roman states that John was too important to Kate and he imagines anyone who crossed paths with him would feel the same.

Paul and Eric sign the guestbook at John’s funeral. Paul comments on how he can’t believe how many people have already been there. Eric says many of them didn’t even know John but were grateful for what he did for Salem and the world. Carrie and Belle look at the flowers that have been sent including an arrangement from Vivian Alamain and another from John’s father Timothy. Belle says that Timothy unfortunately had hip surgery the day before so he won’t be able to be there. They see another from Sami and Sydney. Belle mentions sending flowers to Sydney but she hasn’t heard from Sami. Belle admits it might be kind of selfish but she’s glad Sami isn’t there. Carrie guesses things are awkward between them. Belle says the last thing she’d want is another scene like they had in EJ’s hospital room. Carrie relates to Sami chasing the man she loved for years and feels that Sami has no right to be upset about Belle being with her ex and says at least now, she knows exactly how it was for her. Arianna and Tate head for the church. Arianna stops and says she’s really glad she’s there but cries that she also hates that she’s there. Tate says he knows the feeling. Arianna mentions not knowing there wouldn’t be a coffin and feels it’s creepy and sad to know John’s ashes are in the urn. Arianna and Tate look around but don’t see Will. Brady then arrives and greets them. Tate asks how Rachel is doing. Brady admits she’s not great and was really reluctant to come, but figured she would honor his Grandfather by being there. Tate asks if Kristen is there. Brady says that Kristen thought Marlena might flip out if she came, so she stayed at home. Brady asks if Tate’s ready to do this together. Arianna tells him to go ahead as she’ll be okay. Brady goes over and hugs Marlena as he and Tate join her, Belle, and Carrie. Steve, Kayla, and Roman arrive as well. Marlena thanks Steve for bringing John’s mementos and says they really do capture his spirit. Steve feels it’s the least he could do. Steve cries that he could never tell Marlena how sorry he is. Marlena tells him not to do this as he knows there’s nothing he could’ve done to stop John from saving Bo as that’s just who he was. Steve hugs Marlena as he breaks down crying. Paul, Andrew, and Eric look over the table of John’s mementos. They talk about John’s spy missions over the years. Andrew calls John more of a badass than one could imagine. Paul calls John more of a hero than he could imagine and says they were all lucky to have known and loved him. Paul calls finding out he was John’s son the greatest gift he had ever been given. Chanel suggests she’s just feeling down about John as they were really close. Paulina, Abe, and Julie arrive to greet Marlena. Julie calls John a bright light in all of their lives. Cat Green arrives and keeps her distance. Marlena and Brady join Rachel and talk about John’s love of baseball as Rachel recalls attending a Cubs game with him. Belle asks Carrie if she’s the one who ends up alone in her analogy. Carrie says she didn’t say that but it’s not like her and EJ are the perfect match. Carrie asks if Belle honestly thinks it could work. Belle admits she doesn’t know as she’s been conflicted about it since the beginning and now even more because she thinks John would really hate it. Brady comes over and agrees that he definitely would. Cat walks past Shane and acknowledges him as “director”. Paulina shows Julie photos of Eli and Lani’s babies on her phone. Julie calls it wonderful to think about their grandbabies on a difficult day like this. Paulina realizes this is Julie’s first funeral since Doug. Julie assures that she needs to be there and that Doug would want her to be there for John and Marlena. Arianna tells Tate that it’s nice to hear everyone talking about John. Tate calls it the one good thing about days like today. Arianna guesses she had no reason to be nervous. Rachel comes over and says it’s her first funeral too so Arianna suggests they stick together. Tate introduces Rachel to Arianna. Rachel asks if she is Tate’s new girlfriend since he and Holly broke up but Arianna clarifies that they are cousins. Julie questions Cat being there. Paulina reminds her that Cat works for Marlena. Julie greets Cat and brings up her having a very interesting day as Jennifer told her all about her skydiving experience. Julie remarks that she’s just glad Jack and Jennifer had left before she got there. Kayla signs the guestbook as Shane and Roman talk about how Kimberly is doing. Julie is grateful for Tate telling her what really happened. Tate admits it wasn’t his place but Julie points out that without him, she never would’ve found out. Cat goes over to tell Marlena how sorry she is about John. Marlena thanks Cat for holding things down at work, but says she should be back in a few days. Kayla questions her going back so soon. Update written by Joseph

Marlena and Carrie look at a family photo album at home until Sophia and her mother Amy arrive at the door.

Kate is at the hospital, reading Stephanie’s manuscript when Anna DiMera arrives. Anna and Kate both question what the other is doing there.

Jennifer complains to Jack about Chad going skydiving on a date, calling it stupid and reckless. Jennifer adds that what makes it worse is that he’s doing it with Cat Green.

Chad and Cat prepare to sign their release forms to go skydiving while Chad remains nervous and questioning the terms of the release.

Jack tells Jennifer that he doesn’t get it after everything Cat put their family through. Jennifer explains that Julie said it was a charity fundraiser for the hospital and EJ bid on the date with Cat, but somehow Chad got in to it. Jennifer believes Cat manipulated the situation and Chad as she declares that Cat will not get away with this.

The guide at the skydiving tries to encourage and reassure Chad. He guarantees that Chad will survive and that he might even have fun. Chad remains hesitant but tells Cat that he’s as ready as he’ll ever be.

Anna informs Kate that she and Tony flew in from Europe as they cut their trip short to be there for John’s funeral tomorrow. Anna talks about how sad it is and calls John a great guy. Kate agrees as Anna says she can only imagine how Marlena feels. Kate encourages that Marlena is strong and stoic. Anna mentions being at the hospital for a little check up and asks about Kate. Kate responds that she’s there to be with Philip. Anna says she’s so sorry as she heard about that and asks how he’s doing. Kate says it’s really tough as his doctors just took him for more tests, so she’s just hoping for improvement. Anna says that she and Tony will both pray for Philip. Kate thanks her. Anna then asks what she is reading. Kate calls it a project she’s working on. Anna brings up Kate working at the Pub with Roman. Kate remarks that she always likes to have a few irons in the fire.

Amy tells Marlena and Carrie that it’s nice to meet them. Marlena asks what brings them by. Amy explains that Sophia and Tate were scheduled for a tour of the hospital’s maternity ward. Amy brought Korean dumplings to give to Marlena and says she’s sorry for her loss, commenting on what a tough time it must be for all of them. Amy calls John a very good man. Marlena wasn’t aware that she knew him. Amy says not well, but he once helped her in a time of need. Sophia explains that Amy got a flat tire on the way to her kindergarten graduation. Amy says she was beside herself but John appeared, changed the tire on the fly and wouldn’t accept any money. Amy adds that she made it just in time to see Sophia on stage and she will never forget the kindness that John showed her that day. Marlena thanks her for sharing that. Tate comes in and asks what Amy is doing there. Amy responds that they were waiting on him as Sophia reveals that her mother decided to join them. Amy asks if Tate has a problem with that. Tate says he’s totally fine with her coming, so Amy says they should be on their way. Marlena thanks her for her gift. Amy says they’ll be in her prayers as she exits with Sophia and Tate. Marlena then gets a call from Sami and answers, asking how everything is with Sydney. Marlena says that’s good news and she knows Sami is sorry to miss John’s service as she knows Sami would’ve liked to have said goodbye. Marlena says that John always understood and never held a grudge. Marlena tells Sami that it’s going to be alright.

Jennifer worries about Cat making another play for Chad’s money. Jack points out that when Cat impersonated Abigail, it wasn’t about the money. Jennifer questions why it sounds like Jack is defending Cat. Jack assures he would never defend Cat, but he’s asking her to try to understand why Chad would let Cat back in to his life in the first place. Jack feels Chad is lonely and alone. Jack doesn’t know if Chad will ever recover from the trauma of losing Abigail. Jack suggests maybe the feelings Chad felt when Cat was pretending to be Abigail still linger. Jennifer agrees that he’s probably right. Jennifer remarks that whatever lingering feelings of anger she has towards Cat, she has to remember that it was Clyde who was behind all the misery and mind games that Cat put them through. Jack points out that Jennifer knew from when she first saw Cat, that she was not Abigail. Jennifer says she felt it in her soul. Jack wishes he did too, because he felt like such a fool when the truth came out. Jennifer understands that Jack and Chad wanted to believe that Abigail was alive. Jack repeats that Jennifer saw that Cat was not Abigail and asks what her soul is telling her about Abigail now.

The skydiving guide goes to make sure the plane is ready. Cat asks Chad if he’s sure he wants to do this. Chad assures that he does. Chad admits he’s a little nervous but decides it will be fun. Chad adds that EJ donated a sizable amount of money to the hospital, so he doesn’t want EJ to think he’s just wasting his money. Chad declares they’ve come this far, so they may as well go all the way. Chad and Cat then exit together.

Anna knows what will brighten Kate’s day and brings up pictures from Noah’s graduation on her phone. Anna talks about being glad that she and Tony got to go see their grandson graduate. Kate informs her that Austin already sent her video. Anna calls that better than nothing and says it’s such a shame that Carrie had to miss it, but it was important for her to get back here when she did since she loved John as so many people did. Anna calls this such a hard time for Salem. Kate then gets a text that Philip is back in his hospital room, so she heads that way. Anna notices that Kate left behind Stephanie’s manuscript for her novel “One Stormy Night.” Anna picks it up, questioning what it is and begins to read it. Anna remarks that if Kate wrote this, Roman is a lucky guy. Anna goes after Kate as Amy, Sophia, and Tate arrive at the hospital. Anna instructs them to ask questions about emergency procedures and wants to get Sophia in a wheelchair but Sophia insists that she’s fine. A nurse named Maddie comes over to introduce herself and asks if they are ready to start the tour. They go over everything that will be covered as Sophia sarcastically remarks that she can’t wait.

Anna goes to see Marlena and Carrie. Anna hugs Carrie and says she’s so glad to see her. Anna tells Marlena that she has no words other than she’s more sorry than she can say as she hugs her. Marlena thanks her for coming. Anna assures that she and Tony wouldn’t be anywhere else.

Kate realizes she lost the manuscript at the hospital and goes looking for it. Anna left it on the chair where Kate had left it. Tate, Sophia, and Amy Choi come around on their hospital tour as Amy then finds Stephanie’s manuscript and picks it up. Kate comes around the corner and sees Sophia, so she asks if everything is okay with the baby while Amy hides the manuscript behind her purse. Sophia assures everything is fine and that they are just taking a tour while Amy notes that she wanted Sophia to know what to expect. Kate comments on Amy being cool and calm about her teenage daughter having a baby and relates to when her son was in the same position. They talk about their kids growing up quickly as Kate comments on not worrying any less when they grow up.

Jennifer informs Jack that her soul is telling her that Abigail is gone even though she would give anything to be wrong. Jack remarks that seemingly impossible things happen in Salem every day. Jennifer says they can’t live their lives waiting on a miracle that may never come. Jack agrees and says it’s been three years since they lost Abigail, pointing out that next week is the anniversary. Jennifer says it feels like a lifetime ago while other times it feels like just yesterday. Jack talks about times he feels like he has to show something to Abigail. Jack declares that they have to accept that she’s gone and move on with their lives while so does Chad. Jennifer says just not with Cat Green.

Chad and Cat return from skydiving where Chad has hurt his ankle. The guide advises him and goes to get him some ice. Cat says so much for their fun date. Chad tells her that he actually had a lot of fun. Chad admits he was scared out of his mind but says when he was in the air, all his problems went away like she said it would and he felt at peace. Chad says he had a crash landing but Cat didn’t. Chad asks how many times she has done this. Cat says just once or twice.

Anna shows Carrie and Marlena photos of Carrie’s son Noah from his graduation. Anna tells Marlena how heartbroken she and Tony are for her. Marlena thanks her and says that hearing how much John meant to so many people really is comforting. Marlena guesses that after the funeral, it’s going to be quiet around here. Marlena apologizes for feeling self pity and declares she will be just fine.

Kate sits at Philip’s side in the hospital and says she talked to his doctor, who said his test results are not in yet but she has a really good feeling because she knows how strong he is. Kate tells Philip that he has to wake up because the sooner he does, the sooner they can prove that Xander is the one who did this to him.

Amy talks with the nurse Maddie until Sophia gets sick and rushes off.

Chad returns home with Cat where Jack and Jennifer come in. Jennifer tells Cat to get out of her family’s home now.

Carrie tells Marlena that she can stay as long as she needs but Marlena says Carrie has her own life to get back to. Marlena declares that she will have to find a way to move forward. Anna encourages Marlena being a strong woman who helps others through their troubles, so she hopes she can do that for herself. Marlena agrees to try. Carrie assures that they are all here for her.

Kate promises Philip that they are going to make Xander pay as soon as he wakes up. Kate then gets a call from Belle and tells her how sorry she is about John. Kate adds that Philip is hanging in and says it’s very kind of her to check in. Kate tells Belle that she has peace of mind knowing that Xander has been arrested, but is shocked to learn that he is out on bail. Kate complains that Xander tried to kill her son and that no one in Salem is safe with him around. Kate demands Belle tell her what she’s going to do about it.

Sophia returns to Tate and asks where her mom is. Tate says she went to get her a bottle of water and asks how she’s doing. Sophia says she’s okay and it was just seeing the birthing video and her mom going on about all of it was really intense. Sophia knew she would have to push the baby out of her, but jokes that she wasn’t expecting to see a horror movie and she had no idea it would be so gross and painful. Tate encourages that they can give her drugs while Sophia worries about a needle in her spine. Tate promises to be right there with her but Sophia doesn’t want him anywhere near the delivery room. Amy then resumes reading Stephanie’s manuscript that she found.

Chad apologizes to Jennifer and says he knows they weren’t expecting to see him with Cat. Jennifer complains about Chad being on a date with the woman who impersonated his wife. Chad clarifies that it wasn’t a romantic date while Jennifer questions why Chad would want to spend time with the woman who hurt them all so badly.

Marlena suddenly isn’t feeling very well. Carrie and Anna encourage her to go lay down. Marlena agrees that might be a good idea and thanks them as she heads to her room. Carrie cries that she wants to help her but she doesn’t know what to do. Anna isn’t sure that there’s anything they can do because there’s no cure for the kind of pain that Marlena is in, only time and that never works fast enough as they hug.

Kate tells Philip not to worry because Belle may have fallen down on the job, but she won’t. Kate declares that she will not leave Philip’s side because she’s his mother and it’s her job to protect him. Kate promises that Xander will never lay a finger on him again.

Tate questions Sophia not wanting him in the delivery room. Sophia clarifies that it’s not personal but she doesn’t want him seeing her like that. Tate says he’s not a fan of the sight of blood either. Sophia hopes she can get through it without vomiting, passing out, or making Tate run away from all that. Tate assures that he will not run away. Sophia says they have plenty of other things to worry about as they still need to find a lawyer and an adoptive family which they are running out of time on. Sophia calls out to Amy and asks if she’s ready to go. Amy rejoins them and leaves behind Stephanie’s manuscript.

Jennifer remarks that it was bad enough that Chad went on the date, but now he got injured. Chad says he’s fine and has to pick up the kids from school. Jack and Jennifer say to let them pick up the kids as Chad needs to stay off his feet. Jennifer is just glad the kids weren’t there when he came home from his date because the last thing the kids need is Cat Green in their lives. Jack and Jennifer exit. Chad then calls Cat to apologize. Cat says it’s not his fault as Jack and Jennifer have every right to feel how they do about her. Cat says she’s sorry for causing his family so much trouble and declares that won’t happen anymore because from now on, she’s going to stay away from him as they hang up.

After Jack left to check on the paper, Jennifer asked Julie how she was holding up. Julie said counseling was going well until her anniversary. She said she was grieving over Bo and John. While she was talking, she told Jennifer that Doug stole the necklace. Holly went to see Tate. She said she still cared about him despite their issues. Holly told him she and Doug were friends and thought it was a good idea that Julie knew the truth about the necklace. Tate apologized for what he did and let her know he missed her. Holly said she missed him too. While they were talking, Sophia texted him so they could go on a labor and delivery tour. Tate and Sophia agreed to meet another time. He appreciated her coming to see him.

Days of Our Lives Update

Update written by Joseph

Chad goes to the Spectator office, startling Leo as he is working on John’s obituary for the front page of the Spectator. Chad calls John a real hero and says he’ll never forget how kind he was to he and his kids after Abigail passed away, so no one deserves a beautiful tribute more than John. Leo says the editor was saying it’s too long but he’s having trouble cutting any of it. Leo states that John lived such a beautiful life that he just wants to do his memory justice.

Gabi greets Arianna at home and questions her barely touching her breakfast. Arianna cries that she can’t stop thinking about John. Gabi hugs her and says she knows how much she loved him. Gabi asks how Will is. Arianna thinks he was still in shock when she saw him. Arianna adds that Will is not happy about her living under the same roof as Leo Stark. Gabi says she’s not happy about it either. Arianna comments on Leo giving her Celine Dion CDs, questioning if she looks like she’s ever had a CD player. Gabi guesses he’s just trying to make an effort. Arianna wishes Will wasn’t upset about her living here and that there was something she could do to help him get through this. Gabi says Arianna just being here is more than enough for him. Gabi then suggests Arianna not pull any more disappearing acts, warning that she’s not off the hook for that. Arianna complains about Gabi still making a big deal about this. Gabi argues that Arianna snuck out in the middle of the night and she had no idea where she went, questioning how she doesn’t see that as a big deal. Arianna asks when Gabi became such a control freak and declares that if she knew Gabi would be like this, she wouldn’t have come home. Rafe then comes home and asks if he’s interrupting something. Arianna excitedly rushes up to hug him.

Doug III sits at the Brady Pub, on the phone saying he knows he missed two payments. He tries to swear he won’t miss another but they hang up on him. Holly then arrives to join him.

Tate is at home as Cat shows up at the door and introduces herself as Marlena’s assistant. Tate responds that he knows all about her because her brother Aaron is his best friend. Tate questions why she is here.

Julie finishes a call at home, ordering flowers to St. Luke’s Garden. Jack and Jennifer then arrive, surprising Julie as they hug. Julie says it does her heart so much good to have them there, but wishes it wasn’t for such a sad occasion. Jennifer feels like they were just there for Doug’s funeral and now they have to lay another incredible man to rest. Jack adds that there is at least some good news to celebrate, noting that Bo’s recovery wouldn’t have happened without John.

Chad agrees to allow Leo a few more paragraphs. Leo remembers that today is Chad’s big skydiving date with Cat and asks if he’s not looking forward to it. Chad admits he’s terrified to be jumping out of an airplane. Leo talks about his experience and points out that Chad said it’s not a real date as it’s just for charity. Leo remarks that if he were Chad, he’d just call the whole thing off.

Cat tells Tate that she knows how he feels about her since his girlfriend Holly was in Paris and witnessed the whole thing how she deceived Chad. Tate tells her that they don’t have to get in to it as it’s all in the past, adding that Holly is not his girlfriend anymore. Cat says she’s sorry. Cat says Marlena has been wonderful to her so she wanted to show her support. Tate says she’s resting, so he will tell her that she stopped by. Cat thanks him and then sees a photo of Sami on the mantle and notes that she looks really familiar.

Rafe tells Arianna that she’s developed in to a beautiful young woman while Arianna complains that Gabi still thinks she’s a little girl. Gabi questions Rafe being home early from FBI training. Rafe explains that they let him come home early for John’s funeral and tells Arianna that he’s so sorry for her loss. Arianna offers to get Rafe a coffee from the town square and exits. Rafe asks Gabi if she wants to tell him what that’s all about.

Jennifer tells Julie that they hoped to see JJ before he went to work but Julie says he already left. Jack says they’ll catch up with him eventually and decides he’s going to check in on the Spectator to make sure everything is running smoothly and he’ll be back in a bit. As Jack exits, Jennifer sits with Julie and asks how she’s doing. Julie says she’s so happy that Bo and Hope are back together. Jennifer says they all are but asks how she’s doing. Julie tells her that grief counseling with Marlena was going well until her and Doug’s anniversary came around. Julie says they also thought Bo was dying then and then they lost John. Julie says it all happened at once and she began to feel grief all over again. Jennifer wants to be there for her to help her. Julie says her and Jack coming already made her heart feel like it’s beginning to heal.

Chad tells Leo that he just cancel the date with Cat since EJ spent a lot of money on it and they are friends now, so he can’t just blow her off. Leo brings up Cat’s previous feelings for Chad and asks what if she hasn’t gotten over it. Leo feels Chad doesn’t want to string her along. Chad agrees and admits he doesn’t know if he’s ready to move on from Abigail. Leo believes cancelling the date would be best for both of them then, so Chad wouldn’t have to jump out of an airplane while Cat wouldn’t be clinging to the fantasy of them being together.

Tate asks Cat if she knows Sami. Cat says she doesn’t think so and that Sami just reminds her of someone but she can’t place her finger on it. Cat recognizes John and says she never got to meet him in person but she wanted to thank him for helping her mother and grandmother out of an abusive situation. Cat guesses she owes John gratitude for her entire existence. Tate calls John a hero to a lot of people including him. Tate gets emotional and says to excuse him as he steps out to his room. Cat says she’ll see herself out as she takes one last look at John’s photo.

Holly suggests to Doug III that they have another tutoring session for his GED exam but Doug III says he’s on the clock and hurries back behind the bar as he sees Arianna enter the Pub, leaving Holly confused.

Gabi informs Rafe that Arianna was gone the entire night and she didn’t have a clue where she went, then she found her in the town square the next morning, just hanging out like nothing happened. Gabi feels a parent has a right to know where their child spends the night. Rafe responds that he doesn’t have kids so he can’t really say but points out that Arianna isn’t exactly playing with dolls anymore and she’s a teenager, so if Gabi doesn’t give her freedom, she’s just going to go off anyways. Gabi talks about Arianna being gone a long time and clearly not being her little girl anymore. Gabi admits she’s starting to fear that she doesn’t know her at all as Rafe hugs her.

Chad meets Cat in the town square. Cat started to think Chad was getting cold feet and says she doesn’t want him to do anything he’s uncomfortable with, so if he doesn’t want to do it, he can just say the word.

Leo argues with his editor on the phone and says he will make some more cuts but he’s not sacrificing the integrity of his work. Jack then arrives and questions him now being all about integrity. Leo responds that a lot has changed since he’s been gone and he’s a real journalist now. Jack says he knows as he does keep up since he and Jennifer are still half owners of the paper, so he came to tell Leo that he thinks he’s doing a good job and he likes his work a lot. Jack admits he’s surprised but that Leo has become quite the asset to the paper. Jack remarks that his mother must be proud. Leo says he appreciates the kind words but he obviously doesn’t know that woman as much as he used to.

Julie tells Jennifer about Doug III stealing the necklace and kicking him out of the house. Julie says that from the moment they met, all he did was lie to him. Jennifer is mad that he hurt her. Julie wanted Doug III to be just like Doug, but says that Doug never lied to her while his grandson did.

Arianna greets Doug III at the bar and says she wanted to come say hi as she missed him. Holly then spots Arianna and they hug, talking about not seeing each other in ages and recalling when they were in school together. Doug III gets uncomfortable and says he has another customer so he steps away. Holly asks Arianna when she got back. Arianna says just a couple days ago and she’s still jet lagged. Arianna says it turned out to be good timing since she got to see John one last time before he passed away, revealing that he died last night. Holly is shocked as she had no idea. Holly says she’s sorry and she has to go as she then rushes out of the Pub while Doug III looks on.

Rafe tells Gabi that it will be alright and it will just take Arianna some time to get settled in. Gabi decides that’s enough about her daughter and asks how Rafe likes his new job. Rafe says so far, so good. Gabi asks if they have him chasing people down yet but Rafe says they just have him working some overflow assignments out of the Chicago office, which means he will be able to stay in Salem. Rafe adds that before he really gets started, there’s one unsolved mystery he still wants to solve and brings up how the memory stick from his camera that he planted at the DiMera Mansion went missing. Rafe says in all likelihood, that would’ve captured EJ’s shooting so they would know who the culprit is, but someone took it. Gabi responds that it’s pretty obvious that Leo Stark took it.

Jack tells Leo that he understands Leo’s mother has changed a lot since she sold him the Spectator. Leo corrects that he blackmailed her in to selling him the paper. Jack feels things have come full circle as now her son is working for him. Jack asks if she knows he’s a reporter. Leo doesn’t think so since it’s been close to a year since they spoke. Leo thought about going to see her in prison to tell her the news about John, but figures she would just turn it around to blaming him. Jack recalls Leo’s mother briefly letting him believe that John was his father which Leo confirms turned out to be a big lie. Leo says he should’ve known better that a man like John Black could never have been his dad. Jack says that Gwen told him that Leo’s biological father was abusive. Jack informs him that his was too, so he understands Leo’s desire to change his history even decades later. Jack tells Leo that they are not defined by their parents and compliments his courage to change. Leo thanks Jack for saying that. Jack says he’s going to check on the rest of the operation and tells Leo to keep up the good work. Leo stops Jack to ask if he’s heard from Gwen. Jack says he hasn’t and he’s sorry to hear that Leo hasn’t either as he exits the office.

Cat assures Chad that it’s fine if he wants to cancel but Chad says no and that he wants to do it. Chad admits he’s scared but declares you should do something every day that scares you while Cat quotes the only thing to fear is fear itself. Cat compares Chad to Jim from the Office while Chad jokingly asks why he’s even going on a date with her. Cat reminds him that EJ paid a lot of money and jokes about it being the thrill of a lifetime.

Doug III pretends not to know Holly and asks Arianna where her friend ran off to. Arianna says she doesn’t know and that something set her off. Doug III questions Holly talking about just graduating high school and them sharing a class together which Arianna confirms means they are the same age. Doug III reminds her that they met at a bar, so he just assumed she was 21. Arianna then reveals that she has a fake ID, reminding him that they met on her birthday as she had just turned 18. Doug III is relieved as Arianna apologizes for misleading him. Arianna adds that she wants to see him again. Doug III says they just have to sort out the logistics. They hold hands as Arianna hopes they can do that sooner than later. Someone is outside the Brady Pub and takes a picture of them through the window. Arianna tells Doug III that she’s sorry as she knows he’s at work and she needs to get home to her mom anyways. She says they will talk soon as she exits. Doug III then takes his break from work.

Tate looks at John’s photo on the mantle as Holly shows up at his door. Holly says she just heard about his Grandpa John and she’s so sorry as she hugs Tate.

Rafe questions Gabi saying that Leo Stark stole the memory stick, reminding her that he already denied it. Gabi calls Leo a lying weasel. Rafe questions what he would have to gain from taking it. Gabi suggests Leo could be blackmailing EJ’s shooter. Rafe asks why Leo would still be pointing the finger at Gabi if he knew who did it. Gabi suggests Leo could be covering for the real culprit and extorting money from them. Rafe believes Leo is telling the truth this time since he fancies himself as an investigative journalist who wants to find out who shot EJ. Rafe recalls finding Leo’s list of suspects before. Rafe declares that if Leo found out who shot EJ, there’s no way he’d be sitting on that. Gabi decides maybe he’s right that Leo couldn’t pass up the glory of solving the mystery. Rafe thinks it’s time for him to tell Jada that the evidence is out there. Gabi asks if Rafe is ready to face her again. Rafe responds that time away has caused him to come to terms with their breakup and says this is way too important. Rafe adds that he needs to know for certain before he tells Jada about this, that there is nothing on the memory stick that will incriminate Gabi.

Tate thanks Holly but says she didn’t have to come over. Holly says she wanted to make sure he’s okay as she still cares about him. Tate is surprised since last time he saw her, she and Doug III were looking pretty friendly at the Pub. Holly insists he is just her friend. Tate admits that he screwed Doug III over by telling Julie that he stole her necklace. Holly doesn’t like what he did, but decides he’s right that maybe Julie deserved to know the truth. Tate acknowledges that it didn’t have to come from him and says he really is sorry for that. Tate wants Holly to know that he’s really missed her. Holly admits that Brady kind of told her that. Tate finds that horrible and embarrassing but Holly is glad he said something, because she’s really missed him too. Tate then gets a text from Sophia that she’s on his way over.

Leo calls Marlena and leaves a message, telling her not to feel obligated to call him back as he just wanted to tell her how sorry he is about John. Leo knows she has a lot of family and friends to lean on, but he’s there too if she needs anything. Leo hangs up as Doug III arrives. Leo tells him that he has no update on Julie’s necklace as he hasn’t had a minute to try to track it down. Doug III tells him that Melinda is still not returning his calls and wishes she’d just tell him who bought the necklace but calls that the least of his problems as he declares his whole life to be a mess.

Jennifer tells Julie about searching everywhere for the necklace. Julie then gets a text and remembers she promised Marlena that she would pick her up dry cleaning. Julie hates to leave her but Jennifer says she’ll be fine. Julie then informs Jennifer that Chad will be there soon, if he survives his skydiving date with Cat Green which shocks Jennifer.

Cat tells Chad that she’s gone skydiving before and that it’s fun and she loves it. Cat talks about it making you feel alive and how it helped her out of her depression after her accident. Chad calls it a great pitch and decides maybe it will be a good experience. Cat jokes that is as long as his parachute opens.

Tate tells Holly that he’s sorry as he completely forgot he has a labor and delivery tour with Sophia, so she’s coming over now. Holly says it’s okay and she’ll go. Tate wishes she didn’t have to and asks if they can continue this conversation another time. Holly says of course and repeats that she’s really sorry about John. Tate appreciates her coming by and says it means a lot to him as Holly then exits.

Doug III informs Leo that he still has feelings for Holly but is stuck in the friend zone because she still has feelings for Tate, while he hooked up with someone new that he met at Small Bar. Leo questions the problem so Doug III reveals that the girl and Holly know each other, so if they find out they have him in common, it’s game over for him. He adds that he still has the loan shark harassing him for money he doesn’t have, so he’s under a lot of pressure. Leo says he can tell. Leo jokes that if he’s going to pursue two ladies at the same time, he needs to just not get caught. Leo adds that he’ll also need to find a way to make more money because as long as he has a loan shark on his back, his life is in danger…

Arianna walks through the town square as a man follows her, taking photos of her.

Gabi tells Rafe that she told him that she went to the DiMera Mansion that night, but she didn’t shoot EJ. Gabi says if she thought anything on the video could get her in trouble, she’d tell him but she’s not going to prison for a crime she didn’t commit. Rafe questions if Gabi didn’t go in the house at all. Gabi confirms she didn’t even see EJ that night, she just heard him arguing with another man. Gabi then asks if he thinks it’s possible that the man found out about the camera then broke in to their home to steal the evidence. Rafe says that’s unless he saw the camera the night of the shooting and took it then in which case the evidence might be gone forever.

Cat tells Chad that they better get to the airfield so they aren’t late, so they walk out of the town square together.

Jack returns to Jennifer at the Horton house and asks if something is wrong. Jennifer responds that he has no idea and he’s not going to believe what Julie just told her.

Hope brings Bo to their room. They talk about being unable to believe it’s been two years. Bo questions Hope being here with him the whole time. Hope asks where else she would be. Bo says it’s good that she was since she’s the reason he made it. Bo says he remembers something and he’s sorry for what he did to Hope, Kayla, and Steve. Hope assures he wasn’t himself and that wasn’t his fault so it’s all in the past. Hope calls this the first day of the rest of their lives as they kiss.

Ciara and Shawn remain in Bo’s old rehab room. Ciara talks about how she can’t believe Bo was just in the hospital bed until Shawn brought him the miracle drug. Ciara declares that if Bo pulls through, it’s because of Shawn and calls him a hero. Shawn credits Kayla, Steve, Hope, and John. Shawn prays that John will be alright too…

Johnny gets dressed for work but Chanel stops him and says she’s afraid he will have to call out today. Johnny questions why. Chanel reveals that Carrie just called about his Grandpa John.

Andrew joins Paul in his hotel room at the Salem Inn. Andrew says he heard about John and he’s so sorry as they hug.

Carrie, Eric, and Will gather at Marlena’s home. They talk about not knowing where Marlena is this morning.

Marlena goes to the town square and sits at the Tom and Alice plaque as she flashes back to her and John’s last wedding there. Marlena cries that she misses John so much already.

Shawn tells Ciara that he will call Kayla to see if there’s any update on John while Ciara leaves to go find Hope and Bo. Shawn tells Kayla that Bo is awake, out of bed, and walking around the hospital. Shawn asks how John is doing, but Kayla informs him of his passing. Shawn thought he was doing better and can’t believe it.

Paul cries to Andrew that it’s so unfair as they were so close and John was this close to being home with Marlena. Andrew tells Paul that John lived his life as a hero and that’s how he died too as he saved his uncle Bo’s life. Paul thanks God for that and says he knows it’s selfish of him, but he wishes John didn’t have to be the hero.

Johnny complains to Chanel that he just saw John yesterday and said he would be back today to tell him about his first day at work. Johnny questions how this happens and talks about what a great man John was. Johnny argues that John never got to see him live up to his name. Chanel encourages that he did and says Johnny has a heart of gold just like John. Chanel says they all know John adored him. Johnny says they weren’t related by blood but John was everything he strived to be.

Will talks to Sami on the phone. Will says they will miss her and he hopes Sydney will be okay too as they hang up. Eric asks what happened. Will informs him that Sami and Sydney were getting ready to fly here from the airport but Sydney fell, broke her arm and collarbone and is now in the hospital to have surgery. They realize that means they won’t be able to make John’s memorial. Will says he could tell Sami was upset that she won’t be able to say a proper goodbye to John. Marlena comes home, so Eric questions where she’s been. Marlena explains that she went to visit Tom and Alice because she needed guidance on what to do next which was tell John’s father what had happened. Eric says she didn’t have to go alone as they could’ve gone with her. Marlena thanks him but says she really needs to start to learn to do things on her own now.

Ciara finds Hope and Bo kissing, calling that a sight for sore eyes and says she’ll leave them to it but Bo tells her not to go. Bo comments on his daughter being all grown up. Ciara can’t believe they finally got him back as she rushes over as they have a tearful embrace. Ciara tells Bo that she has a daughter and a son now, so she’s so excited for him to meet them. Ciara talks about praying every day for Bo to get better which he says must be some powerful prayers. Ciara adds that she and Ben have been traveling the world on a sailboat like Bo and Hope used to, guessing she gets her sense of adventure from them. Bo is happy and proud that she made a good life for herself. Bo adds that he’ll have to meet Ben to make sure he’s worthy of his daughter. Ciara calls him a good guy and a great father. Ciara says she learned from Hope and Bo that it’s more important than anything to be there for your kids. They hug again as Shawn then joins them.

Johnny tells Chanel that he has to get to Marlena’s, but he doesn’t even know what he’s going to say to her. Chanel tells him there is no perfect words and that just having people she loves around her is what Marlena needs and he needs to be around family. Chanel decides to go with him as they exit.

Carrie tells Marlena that she does not have to worry about being alone. Marlena thanks her and realizes she’ll have to start writing thank you notes for things people brought and sent. Will says they will handle that. Eric tells Marlena to just worry about taking care of herself. Marlena feels the best thing she can do is stay busy. Marlena declares she has some arrangements to make and heads to her bedroom.

Paul talks to Andrew about how John was getting better and they all thought he was on track to a miraculous recovery. Andrew knows that makes it even harder, how sudden it was. Paul brings up that he and Brady were talking about how when John got out of the hospital, he and Andrew were going to get married but now he doesn’t know when that will happen.

Bo and Shawn embrace as Shawn talks about being so happy he’s awake as he missed him so much. Bo tells him that he’s so blessed to have his beautiful and perfect family back together. Shawn asks what Bo remembers about what happened to him. Bo recalls having cancer and Kayla telling him he wasn’t long for this world. Hope says they lost Bo but thankfully not forever. Shawn asks and then what. Bo asks what he’s trying to say. Shawn states that ever since the day he shot him, it’s the first thing he thinks about every day and now he finally gets to tell him how sorry he is. Shawn calls it the worst mistake of his life. Bo tells him that he has nothing to be sorry for as he remembers what happened and that Shawn did what he had to do to protect his mother. Shawn says she didn’t need to be protected and feels he’s the one who caused all this pain by taking two years of Bo’s life away from him. Bo declares that the only person responsible is Megan Hathaway. Hope agrees that it was never Shawn’s fault but tells Bo that he wouldn’t stop blaming himself. Bo repeats that Shawn did what he had to do and what he was trained to do, adding that he would’ve done the same thing so he will not allow Shawn to continue to beat himself up. Bo declares that he’s proud of Shawn and proud to be his father as he hugs him. Ciara brings them croissants and mentions that Chelsea will be stopping by soon with the baby. Bo questions Chelsea having a baby and how many grandkids they have now, saying to bring them all on. Bo declares that they are so lucky to have this amazing family. Bo asks how Claire is doing. Shawn says she is living her best life as a social media expert in South Africa. Ciara adds that she’s with Claire. Bo says as long as everyone’s happy and asks about Belle. Shawn informs him that they are divorced but they are friends and will always be family because of Claire. Bo repeats that as long as everyone’s happy. Bo comments that he sure has missed a lot and wants to be filled in on all the news from Salem.

Marlena returns to the living room and explains that after Doug died, she and John thought it might be a good idea to put their last wishes in writing. Marlena talks about hoping they’d live as long as Doug, noting that Doug and Julie were the lucky ones.

Paul says he should get over to Marlena’s place because she’s going to need all the support she can get today. Andrew encourages that there will be plenty of time for him to be there for Marlena and everyone else, but right now he wants to be there for Paul as he hugs him.

Marlena informs Eric, Carrie, and Will that John’s last wishes were to have a reception at the Brady Pub which Carrie and Will agree to arrange. Carrie decides they’ll go there now and go see Roman, so she and Will exit. Eric asks if Marlena wants to rest now. Marlena thinks she just wants to sit with him. Eric tells Marlena that he loves her and is here for her. Eric asks if it will help to talk. Marlena says maybe. Marlena talks about meeting John and knowing his character, that he would risk his life for those he loved. Marlena adds that Bo was like a brother to John. Eric recalls Bo being John’s brother when they all thought John was his dad. Marlena cries that there’s never enough time when someone is your everything. Johnny and Chanel then arrive. Johnny hugs Marlena and says he’s so sorry.

Bo says it sucks that Kimberly’s cancer came back. Hope says that Shane says they caught it in time so she’s beginning chemo and is expected to make a full recovery. Bo calls that a relief and says he will have to visit her. Bo asks about his other family and if Philip and Brady are still at each other’s throats over Titan. Hope confirms that Philip is still sparring over Titan but with someone new. Bo asks if it’s Justin but Shawn asks if he remembers Xander Cook. Bo recalls him as one of Victor’s henchmen. Ciara adds that he was also the gardener. Shawn explains that he is now Xander Kiriakis, is co-CEO of Titan with Philip and is also Bo’s half-brother. Bo calls that quite a move but guesses it shouldn’t surprise him that Victor had another child. Bo then asks if Victor is still pulling the strings behind the scenes and pretending to be retired. Ciara informs him that they actually have bad news about Victor which Bo questions. Hope reveals that Victor passed away. Bo can’t believe it and argues that it was like Victor could live forever so he can’t be gone. Bo cries and asks how Maggie is holding up. Hope says she’s had a lot of support from the family so she’s alright. Bo calls Maggie the best thing to ever happen to Victor. Bo talks about it being complicated for them in the beginning, but they did find their way to being father and son. Bo breaks down crying that he never got the chance to tell Victor that he loved him or to say goodbye to him. Hope says she’s so sorry and assures that Victor loved him. Hope adds that there is someone else they lost in Doug. Bo is shocked and tells her that he’s so sorry, calling Doug the heart and soul of her family. Bo cries that he’s sorry he wasn’t there. Hope assures that he was always in her heart as they hug.

Marlena tells Johnny that she’s so glad he and Chanel are there. Chanel says she’s so sorry and calls John a wonderful man. Johnny asks if they’ve heard from Sami. Eric informs her that she won’t make it as Sydney fell at the airport and now needs surgery, but doctors say she’ll be alright. Marlena says even though Sami won’t be there for John’s funeral, she hopes Sami can find peace in the knowledge that he did raise her. Marlena adds that she hopes Johnny can find some peace with EJ as well. Johnny responds that today is not about EJ, but about Marlena and John. Johnny knows John will always be in their hearts, so he just hopes he can make him proud. Marlena assures that he always did and she loves him.

Will and Carrie walk through the town square where they come across Andrew and Paul. Andrew and Carrie embrace, talking about how long it’s been. Carrie tells Paul that she’s so sorry for his loss. Paul says he should be giving her condolences too since John was his father, but he raised Carrie. Paul says John thought the world of Carrie and Will. Will tells Paul that John loved him so much and was proud of him. Will knows that Paul coming in to John’s life was one of the best things to ever happen to them which Andrew agrees with.

Ciara brings her kids to meet Bo. Ciara introduces her daughter Addie and her son Bo, saying she told them all about him since they were born. Ciara’s son Bo greets him and runs up to hug him. Bo says he’s so excited to meet him and is proud they share the same name, noting that they have a lot of catching up to do.

Marlena informs Eric that his uncle Bo is on the mend which Eric calls great news. Marlena says she really adores Bo, so she’s so happy for his family, but part of her wonders if their family’s miracle came at the expense of their family. Marlena asks if that’s terrible of her. Eric calls it human. Marlena says no more giving in to that human stuff. Marlena declares that John risked his life to save Bo and calls him an extraordinary man.

Andrew says he keeps thinking of the epic adventures Shane and John were on together. Carrie says who would’ve thought the sons of the ISA super spies would fall head over heels in love with each other.

Ciara tells her son Bo about his Grandpa being the bravest man she knows and how she wants him to grow up to be just like him. Hope jokes that the world needs two Bo Bradys.

Johnny and Chanel return home as Johnny finishes a call with Alex, who told him to take as much time as he needs from work. Chanel is sure Alex understands and tells Johnny that she wants to be here for him every step of the way and wants him to tell her all of his feelings. Chanel knows she can’t take away the pain but maybe sharing some of it with her will help lessen it. Johnny doesn’t know what he would do without her. Chanel says he’ll never have to find out as they kiss.

Ciara decides she should get the kids back to the hotel while Hope encourages Bo to rest. Ciara promises to bring them back as Shawn says he will help her out and spend time with his nephew. Ciara says she will see them soon and hugs Bo and Hope as she and Shawn then exit with the kids. Hope encourages Bo to take it slow as they sit together. Bo admits he’s feeling a little overwhelmed. Bo says there’s some sadness but he’s mostly grateful and happy to be back. Bo comments that so much has happened since he’s been gone but one thing that hasn’t changed is his love for her as they kiss.

Carrie returns to Marlena’s with Andrew and Paul. Marlena says she’s so glad they are both there. Paul tells Marlena that he’s sure she already knows the love John had for her. Andrew thanks Eric for offering to officiate he and Paul’s wedding but reveals they have decided to postpone it. Marlena is against that, feeling they really need a celebration of love now and pleads with them to get married in Salem before they leave. Paul then agrees to do it in honor of his father.

Hope looks at an old photo of her and Bo on her phone. Shawn returns. Hope excitedly hugs him, talking about having his father back and says she can’t find the right words to express how it all feels. Hope calls it perfect and stunning. Shawn asks where Bo is. Hope says he’s back in his hospital room since the nurse didn’t want him overdoing it and he’s getting some rest. Shawn stops her and says there’s something he needs to tell her. Shawn says he spoke to Kayla. Hope says she hasn’t stopped thinking about him and praying for him. Hope didn’t want Bo to know anything about it and asks how John is doing. Shawn then reveals that John didn’t make it. Hope is shocked and hugs Shawn as she begins to cry.

Marlena lays in bed alone as she flashes back to laying with John the night before until he officially passed away.

Belle wakes up and greets Brady in the living room. Belle says she’s going to call the hospital to check on John but Brady stops her and reveals that he was up late working last night when Marlena called to inform him that their dad is gone.

Kayla goes to the Brady Pub and tearfully informs Roman that John died last night.

Paulina and Abe are asleep in bed together until they are woken up by Abe’s phone ringing. Abe answers the call from Steve and asks if something happened. Steve informs him about John which shocks him. Abe thanks Steve for calling and hangs up. Paulina asks him what it is. Abe responds that it’s about John.

Julie is praying the rosary at home when she gets a call from Hope, who shocks her with the news that Bo has woken up.

EJ sits in the living room of the DiMera Mansion on his laptop as Kristen walks in. EJ notes her being up early. Kristen responds that she couldn’t sleep but it seems like EJ has been busy and questions if he’s even gone to bed. EJ says he has no time for sleep as he’s been working on cementing his takeover of the hospital. Kristen hopes he’s working on a plan of getting her mother home. EJ assures that he has no intention of reneging on their pact and he has no issue bringing her mother back as long as Kristen makes sure that she won’t testify against him and that Rachel won’t implicate Johnny in his shooting. Kristen tells EJ that they have a deal and promises nothing will change her mind. Rachel then screams from upstairs, so Kristen rushes to go check on her. Kristen runs in and hugs Rachel, asking if she’s still feeling sick. Rachel tells Kristen that she had another nightmare. Kristen asks if it was about EJ’s shooting again but Rachel reveals that she dreamed that her Grandpa John had died.

Kayla tells Roman that John was doing so much better and they all believed he would recover as he was getting stronger and then everything turned. Kayla wishes she could’ve done more. Roman assures she did all she could and asks her not to be hard on herself. Roman asks where Steve is. Kayla says that he’s making calls to tell Shane and Andrew what happened. Kayla asks how Roman is feeling. Roman responds that he’s in shock as John had such a huge presence in all of their lives. Roman says he first knew him as his rival when he took over his life, but it’s not like he set out to hurt him. Roman adds that because of the man John was, he ended up doing a lot of good for him including raising his kids and loving them like his own. Roman says he couldn’t ask for a better man to be his kids’ second father. Kayla agrees that John was so loving, kind, and full of joy. Kayla says it was crazy how John was first introduced to them, but he was part of their family like another brother and to Steve too. Roman very much feels like he lost a brother and part of himself. Kayla says they all do.

Brady hugs Belle as she says she doesn’t understand since John was doing better. Belle recalls Marlena sending them home and telling them to come back in the morning. Belle asks why Marlena didn’t call them so they could be there to say goodbye. Brady tells her that it happened very sudden and quickly, otherwise Marlena would’ve called if they had time. Marlena comes out from her room, so Belle hugs her as they cry.

Julie tells Hope this is the greatest news and calls it a miracle. Julie declares it’s all because of John Black. Julie thanks Hope for telling her and says they will talk later as she hangs up. Julie looks to a photo of her and Doug, telling Doug that was the most wonderful news in the world and she knows he had something to do with it.

Kayla talks to Hope on the phone and says she’s so happy for her and Bo. Kayla thanks her and gives the phone back to Roman, who says to tell Bo that he will see him sooner than later. Roman says they will talk soon and hangs up, commenting on Bo being awake and doing fine after all this time. Kayla declares that John sacrificed his life so Bo could live. Kayla doesn’t know what Hope will think when she hears this. Roman says Hope just got the love of her life back after all this time and there’s no way he was going to take that moment away from her, but he still can’t get over how all of this happened. Roman says 48 hours ago, Bo was getting his last rites while they were waiting to welcome John home.

Belle and Marlena sit together while Brady notes that Tate is still asleep and he feels like he should wake him up. Marlena says not to since Tate is just getting over the flu and needs his rest. Belle mentions that Paul, Eric, and Carrie are all staying at the Salem Inn. Brady says he will call Paul if Belle wants to call Eric and Carrie. Marlena stops them and says it’s still so early, so she suggests to give everybody some time. Abe and Paulina then show up at the door, informing Marlena that they just heard the news from Steve. Paulina says they are so sorry as she hugs Marlena.

Kristen tells Rachel that she doesn’t have to worry about Grandpa John. Rachel worries about John being sick. Kristen says she spoke with Brady last night and he said John was feeling much better. Kristen knows Rachel was disappointed they didn’t get to see him yesterday, so she’ll pick her up from school and go visit him. Rachel says that may make her feel better. Kristen encourages her to get some sleep now and then she’ll be so rested to see her Grandpa. Kristen tells Rachel that she loves her and to go to sleep. Kristen then pulls out her phone and texts Brady that she needs to see him about Rachel.

Brady says he has to go as it’s about Rachel and he’ll be back as soon as he can. Brady hugs Marlena and says he loves her. Brady thanks Paulina and Abe for being there. Abe asks where else they would be as Brady then exits. Paulina asks if there’s anything she can get for Marlena. Marlena says no. Abe asks if there’s anything else they can do. Marlena cries that there is not. Paulina knows it’s a terribly difficult time for her and assures they are here for her.

Kristen gets a text back from Brady that he’s on the way. Kristen exits Rachel’s bedroom as she falls back asleep.

Belle brings Marlena some tea and asks where Abe and Paulina went. Marlena responds that they went to get her some pastries. Marlena says she told them they didn’t have to as she wasn’t hungry. Julie then arrives and excitedly brings in lemon bars, talking about how they were waiting for news on Bo and then she remembered they were John’s favorite so she brought some over. Julie then notices Marlena’s expression. Marlena tearfully informs Julie that John is gone.

Brady joins Kristen in the living room of the DiMera Mansion. Kristen thanks him for coming so early and says they need to talk about Rachel. Brady agrees that they do. Kristen asks him what is going on. Brady responds that he has some difficult news and they have to find a way to break it to Rachel, but he doesn’t know how as she’s been through a lot now. Kristen says he’s scaring her and asks what is wrong. Brady reveals that his father died last night.

Julie hugs Marlena as they cry and says she’s so sorry. Julie says last she heard, John was better. Julie wants to be there for Marlena like she was for her. Julie says she knows what it means to lose someone you love so much. Paulina and Abe return with pastries. Paulina jokes that they practically bought out the Bakery. Marlena says she didn’t have to but Paulina says now all their guests can have something sweet to eat. Marlena and Julie thank them. Julie takes the pastries to the kitchen.

Kristen doesn’t understand since John was getting better. Brady says he was and then he took a turn for the worse. Brady says it happened very fast, so he wasn’t there but there was nothing anybody could do. Kristen says she just doesn’t believe it. EJ returns to the living room as Kristen states that she can’t believe John is gone. EJ then steps back out and looks at Belle’s number on his phone and quickly exits.

Roman wonders if he should call Eric and Carrie to invite them over for an early breakfast but feels with news like this, they might not be hungry. Kayla doesn’t think they know as Marlena was adamant about waiting until a decent hour to tell them. Roman agrees that’s probably for the best. Kayla decides she should get to Marlena’s house since she told her she would collect John’s personal belongings from the hospital. Roman decides to go with her.

Abe asks if Marlena has given any thought to the funeral. Marlena cries that she hasn’t, so Abe says they are here to help with whatever she needs. EJ arrives and is surprised to see Paulina at the door. Paulina questions what he’s doing there. EJ says he wanted to pay his respects. Marlena asks how dare he come here. Belle comes over and questions what EJ is doing there. EJ says he heard about her father and wanted to offer his condolences to all of them as he’s so very sorry. Belle thinks Marlena has had enough visitors today and suggests they get out of here, so Belle exits with EJ.

Kristen tells Brady that it’s so shocking to know that John is gone and says he was so important to so many people including her. Kristen tells Brady that she’s so sorry as she knows how much he and John adored each other and she can only imagine how much he is hurting now. Brady doesn’t think it’s really hit him yet that he’s never going to see his father again as he can’t wrap his head around it. Kristen understands it’s impossible to accept that such an important and great man is just now. Kristen knows she and John had a complicated history but she respected him as a father and grandfather. Kristen states that the world will be lesser without him.

Julie sits with Marlena until Kayla and Roman arrive at the door. Roman hugs Marlena and tells her that he’s so sorry. Marlena thanks them for coming. Kayla says they know how much they loved John. Kayla adds that they do have some good news that she thinks Marlena would like to hear. Kayla announces Bo woke up from his coma. Marlena says that’s wonderful news. Kayla calls it a miracle. Roman declares that John saved their brother’s life. Kayla calls John a true hero. Marlena agrees and cries that they must be so happy.

Abe and Paulina return home. Abe says they’ve been up since early morning but they agree they can’t go back to sleep. Paulina brings up a book she read awhile back called “When Bad Things Happen to Good People” written by a rabbi. Paulina says he didn’t have any theories as to why life was so unfair, but he wrote that acts of God are reflected when a community responds and rebuilds after a tragic event, meaning that it’s how people support and comfort each other during hard times and that’s when you find God. Abe agrees and says they will be there for Marlena and John’s family. Abe calls John one of the closest friends he had and talks about standing up for John at he and Marlena’s wedding and the honor of marrying them. Abe hopes John knew how much he loved him. Paulina assures that he did as they hug.

Belle and EJ walk through the town square. EJ asks if she wants coffee from the Bakery, feeling she could use it. Belle says she doesn’t want to see anyone right now. EJ says he understands and asks why she hustled him out of Marlena’s house then. Belle says Marlena was going to physically throw him out and questions what he was thinking, showing up at the house when half of her family doesn’t even know yet. EJ explains that as soon as he heard the news, he wanted to see her as soon as he could and be there for her.

Kayla tells Marlena that she will call Cat to cancel all of her appointments today but Marlena says no because her patients need her. Kayla says she will be there for her when she’s ready but she should take this time now for herself. Marlena questions what she would do with herself just staying home. Roman suggests she could get some rest and visit with people who love John and her. Kayla agrees and says she knows Marlena wants to find a distraction, but right now she needs to take care of herself.

Kristen tells Brady that Rachel was so excited to see her Grandpa yesterday and she told her that they could go back to visit him today, but now she will never get the chance. Brady says he gave John the card that Rachel made and will make sure she knows how much it meant to him. Kristen worries that it’s going to hit Rachel hard when she’s already so scared. Kristen informs Brady that Rachel had a nightmare that her Grandpa died and she told her not to worry as everything would be alright. Brady asks why she wouldn’t tell her that since he was doing better and they all thought they would have more time. Kristen thought she would have more time with her mother and she might just get the chance. Brady questions that as he thought EJ was refusing to tell her where she was and asks if EJ is going to bring her back. Kristen responds that EJ said he would tell her where she is if she promised to make sure she didn’t testify against him. Brady questions that being all he wanted in return and says that doesn’t sound like EJ. Kristen adds that she also promised Rachel wouldn’t say anything about seeing Johnny with a gun. Brady questions why she would tell EJ that Rachel saw that. Kristen explains that EJ already suspected Johnny had shot him and was just protecting his son. Brady can’t believe she agreed to EJ’s terms without talking to him. Kristen cries that EJ is keeping her mother from her. Brady asks what about their daughter and if she’s supposed to keep this secret for the rest of her life. Kristen says she doesn’t expect her to keep it for the rest of her life and argues that’s what her therapist is for. Brady worries about the police come calling. Kristen says that won’t happen and would only happen when a crime is about to happen. Brady asks if she’s willing to bet on that, pointing out the lengths EJ went to silence her mother and asks what if he did the same to Rachel. Kristen says he wouldn’t. Brady asks if she’s sure about that.

EJ tells Belle that she can’t be surprised that he wanted to be there for her and tells her that he wanted to do whatever he could because he loves her. Belle questions him loving her. EJ says he thinks about her all day and night and his heart skips a beat when he sees her. Belle stops him and says it’s like she can feel her dad’s presence and almost see him worrying about her and wanting her to make the right choices in life. EJ asks what she’s trying to say. Belle thinks her dad wouldn’t think what they are doing is the right decision for her and she wants to honor his memory and respect his wishes. Belle tearfully tells EJ that she’s sorry.

Kayla tells Marlena that she has John’s things from the hospital and offers to put them in the other room but Marlena wants to see them now. Julie says it can wait but Marlena doesn’t want to, so Kayla hands over the bag. Marlena looks inside and questions if this is everything. Kayla says it should be and asks why. Marlena states that she gave John a gold coin at the hospital.

Paulina talks about how close she and Abe have come to being in Marlena’s position as they’ve nearly lost each other so many times. Paulina is grateful to be here with Abe now. Abe says that goes double for him as they hug.

Marlena goes to her room and looks at an old Christmas photo of her and John. She flashes back to when they took the picture as she holds back tears.

Julie asks if she can get anything for Roman and Kayla but they decline. Roman suggests they start making calls to give people the news.

Marlena looks at her phone and sees she has a voicemail from John, questioning how she did not see this as it’s from when he was coming home. Marlena plays the voicemail of John saying “I love you, Doc”. She plays it twice more as she cries and says she loves him.

Update written by Joseph

Steve joins Kayla at the hospital and calls it pretty miraculous how well John is doing. Kayla says it’s all about his fighting spirit as he never gives up. Kayla says John has put so much good out in the world, he deserves to have it all come back to him.

Marlena remains at John’s hospital bedside and says she could stay here like this forever with him, though she would like it if they were at home in their own bed. John manages to say he wishes. Marlena reminds John of the time they tossed a coin in the fountain in Italy. Marlena talks about at that time, John was in the hospital and doctors were not positive about his recovery but then Belle had a dream about John having a coin in his hand, so the coin became a symbol that they were not going to lose him. Marlena flashes back to that time as John tells her that he’s still here.

Hope, Ciara, and Shawn are at Bo’s side in his hospital bed. Ciara and Shawn try to encourage Hope to go back to the hotel to sleep but Hope insists on staying here beside Bo until he opens his eyes.

Marlena tells John that they have spent so many wonderful years together and there have been times they have been apart. Marlena recalls the time that John thought she had died and she can’t imagine how difficult that was and how hard it must have been to know he had to carry on alone. John manages to say he was lost and that life began when he met her. Marlena declares the day he stole her heart was when her life began.

Steve tells Kayla that he can’t stop thinking about if he hadn’t called John for help retrieving the drug, then he never would have gotten hurt. Kayla insists that he only called John for advice while John decided to jump in as nothing would stop him from saving Bo’s life. Kayla encourages that John is on the mend and Bo has a fighting chance because of it.

Shawn gets Hope not wanting to leave Bo. Hope stops him and says this is the last time they are having this conversation as her mind is made up and she’s staying here. Ciara calls Hope the most stubborn person she’s ever met. Hope talks about being in this war with Bo for two years and talking to him every day, joking that she expects him to wake up and tell her to stop talking already. Hope states that Bo has never been shy on expressing his feelings. Ciara asks what Hope talks to Bo about. Hope says everything from the news and weather to their family including motorcycles and documentaries. Shawn says his thing was to read to Bo. Ciara recalls when Bo used to read to her which Shawn relates to. Ciara says she’d give anything for Bo to be able to tell stories to her kids then flashes back to Bo telling her stories. Bo’s eyes suddenly start to flicker, so Shawn rushes out to get the doctor.

Marlena holds John’s file and comments on how he wasn’t always John Black as he was The Pawn and there was even a time that she believed he was Stefano as she flashes back to that time. Marlena says it didn’t matter how many identities he had, as she always knew exactly who he was. Marlena calls him the man that saved her life, who protected her even during her darkest hours. Marlena calls John the strongest, kindest, and gentlest man she’s ever known. Marlena tells him that she will always be the great love of her life.

Kayla tells Steve that there’s nothing more that she wants more than for Bo to wake up, but right now she’s just hoping there’s no complications with the drug. Kayla knows there’s no way Bo would have survived if Steve hadn’t fought so hard to get him the drug. Steve still wishes he got it to him sooner. Steve suggests that if John keeps improving, maybe they can go see Bo and tell him it’s not okay for him to just be lying in bed all day. Kayla says maybe they can get lucky and be there when Bo wakes up.

The doctor checks on Bo and questions what they think they saw. Hope, Ciara, and Shawn insist on seeing his eyes movement while Hope says he’s never done that before. Hope asks if this means he could be waking up but the doctor says she’s sorry as she sees no change in his condition. Shawn asks if that’s it and they can’t run some tests. She responds that they ran tests this morning and will repeat them tomorrow. She encourages them to keep talking to Bo because having his family around can only do him good. The doctor then exits the room. Hope says the doctor thinks they were just imagining it and that it was just wishful thinking, but she knows it wasn’t. Hope asks what Bo is trying to tell them and if he’s coming back to them. Bo’s dream continues where he is able to get in to the Brady Pub but now Steve and Kayla are gone. Bo tries to go ask the bartender but he turns out to be Bo’s son Zach.

Kayla brings Steve in to visit John. Steve tells John that he really needs to apologize for dragging him in to a bad situation like that. John says no regrets. A nurse enters the room to inject John with morphine which Kayla says will help with his pain. Steve tells John that while he was away, Rafe left them in the lurch and rejoined the FBI, so very soon he will need John to put the Black back in Black Patch. Steve can’t believe they have been partners for over a decade as he flashes back to them forming Black Patch.

Shawn suggests maybe Bo was dreaming and it may be a good sign, noting he is the first person to ever receive Versavix. Hope calls it pretty fitting since Bo has always done everything his way and always a rebel. Ciara jokes about Bo passing that trait down to his kids. Ciara and Shawn joke with each other about who is more of a rebel. Hope wonders if their son Zach would’ve taken after Bo in the same way.

In Bo’s dream, he comments to Zach that they are in a Pub but realizes they are not in Salem which Zach confirms. Bo says this reminds him of a dream he had and calls it strange. Bo says none of that matters and wants to hug him but Zach doesn’t think that’s a good idea. Zach informs Bo that he’s not supposed to be here.

Bo’s eyes show movement again as Hope, Ciara, and Shawn look on.

Steve jokes about John laying it on thick with this heroic stuff, first stopping Orpheus from selling off a nuclear bomb and then retrieving a life changing drug for Bo and millions of others. Kayla jokes that they’ll have to make a John Black statue in the town square. Marlena says as long as they have the real John at home because nothing makes him happier than being with his loved ones. Marlena flashes back to when Belle and Brady were babies. Marlena knows she and the kids have always been John’s top priority.

Shawn says he’s going to get the doctor back but Hope stops him and says Bo doesn’t have a fever, so it can’t be the infection but she thinks he’s becoming more aware of what’s happening around him. Hope asks if Bo has been enjoying their stroll down memory lane, calling it quite a ride from the beginning as she then flashes back to when she and Bo first met and the life they had together. Hope declares that it has been every bit the adventure he promised her.

Bo’s dream continues as he asks what Zach means. Zach tells Bo that his place is with Hope, Shawn, Ciara and their kids as they need hi. Bo argues that Zach needs him too since he was taken away from them way too early and he didn’t get the chance to see him grow up. Zach talks about being surrounded by loved ones and says Grandma Caroline and Grandpa Shawn say hi. Bo says he just got here and wants to spend more time with him. Zach warns that the longer he stays, the harder it will be to go back so he’ll have to make a decision soon. Bo doesn’t want to say goodbye. Zach encourages that he’ll be waiting for him when it is his time. Bo asks who says it isn’t his time right now. Hope, Ciara, and Shawn then appear behind him as Hope says they do.

Marlena tells Steve and Kayla that even if she does get John home, she’s not sure he’ll be entirely safe. Marlena remembers the night of their first wedding, joking that she got too aggressive with her new groom which she flashes back to. John’s monitors then start beeping and he has trouble breathing. Kayla says she will check his oxygen levels and get his breathing under control. Kayla rushes out of the room as Marlena tries to keep John calm.

Shawn tells Hope and Ciara that Claire feels terrible that she can’t be there. Hope knows she’s there in spirit. Shawn says they are hopeful that Bo is making progress and the drug is working. Hope declares they are all hopeful that it’s finally happening and Bo is coming back to them. Hope wants Bo to think about everything they have been through together, because it cannot end this way and they have far too many beautiful memories to make and beautiful old ones to cherish.

Kayla worries that John’s pulse is dropping as John struggles to breathe. Steve argues that he was doing so much better and asks how this happened so fast. Kayla worries that his injuries have caught up with him. Marlena tries to encourage John’s breathing and says she has him right here.

Hope worries that talking about all the memories is upsetting Bo. Shawn notes that not all of the memories are good and some are painful, but that’s who they are as a family. Shawn brings up the saddest one, losing their brother Zach but says they got through it together and it hurts but Bo would want them to remember those times and Zach which Hope agrees with.

Bo questions Hope, Ciara, and Shawn being in his dream. Ciara says they are here to bring him home. Shawn says he’s been napping for the better part of a decade. Bo asks what about Zach. Zach hugs the rest of the family which Bo questions why he didn’t get a hug. Hope responds that they are not really there and don’t have a choice to make about staying like Bo does. Hope tells Bo to stop being stubborn and wake up. Bo responds that he’s not being stubborn as he has fought for two years to try to get back to her and their family, but no matter how hard he fights, nothing changes and he can’t even open his eyes. Bo declares that maybe it’s time to realize he’s where he belongs. Ciara says he can’t mean that. Bo says sometimes you can give it all you’ve got and it’s just not enough.

Marlena asks Kayla if there’s nothing else she can do. Kayla responds that John’s lungs were already so damaged, so all they can do now is try to make this as comfortable as possible. Steve questions what she’s saying. Marlena says that Belle was clear that John wanted to fight until his last breath. Steve says that’s exactly what he’s doing. Marlena prays for God to help John. Kayla says she’s not asking her to give up hope, but they may be running out of time so they might should call a priest. Afterwards, Marlena thanks Kayla for calling the priest and admits it was the right thing to do. Kayla says they will be right outside if she needs them to give Marlena her final moments with John. Kayla thanks John for everything as she and Steve exit in tears. Marlena tells John that she loves him. John manages to say that he loves her too. Marlena says that John put up the bravest fight she’s ever seen and she knows he’s weary. Marlena declares that if John needs to go, it’s okay. Marlena knows he’s worried about her and the children, but he has given them all the love they will ever need and they will always have him in their memories and in their hearts. Marlena tearfully repeats that it’s okay if he rests now.

Ciara asks Hope if she’s okay and what’s wrong. Hope responds that she doesn’t know but she jut got a horrible feeling.

In Bo’s dream, Hope can’t believe what she’s hearing as Bo is not a quitter. Bo says maybe this is the way things are meant to be as they have each other and he’ll be with Zach. Zach tells Bo not to use him as an excuse. Bo refuses to abandon him again and feels he’d be letting him down again if he left. Zach says he never let him down so they don’t owe him anything. Zach encourages them to go live their lives. Bo wishes he could but says maybe it’s above his pay grade whether he lives or dies. Hope says he’s not wrong that he can’t choose whether he survives this but he can choose to fight and not give up until his final breath as it could make all the difference. Hope says they’ve done everything they can to fight for him, wake him up, and save him so now it’s his turn to fight for his family. Bo responds that he has been fighting but he has no idea what else he can do.

Bo’s monitors start beeping causing worry as Shawn and Ciara rush out to get the doctor. Hope pleads with Bo as she cries.

Steve asks Kayla if there’s nothing else they can do like an experimental drug and says he’d go to the ends of the earth to get it. Steve says they have to save John. Kayla responds that there’s nothing they can do. Kayla declares that John is shutting down so it’s just a matter of time. Steve breaks down crying as they hug.

Marlena cries while laying with John as “Goodbye My Love (For Now)” by St. Hollywood plays over a montage of Marlena and John’s life together.

Bo wakes up to see Hope and says “Fancyface” which thrills Hope.

Update written by Joseph

Paul and Marlena sit with John in his hospital room. Paul gets upset and starts blaming himself for not talking John out of going to the meth lab. Paul brings up how excited John was to see Marlena and complains that he should’ve insisted on going in his place and that he should be in the hospital bed instead of John. Marlena stops him and tells him that he’s wrong as John would never have forgiven himself if that happened. Marlena encourages that John’s stubbornness will get him through this. John then begins to wake up and calls out “Doc” to Marlena.

Brady sits with Belle, who says that Paul is in with John as she wanted to give them a few minutes together. Brady guesses he should wait until Rachel’s done with her appointment. Brady hopes Rachel just had an upset stomach and says now they have three reasons to be at the hospital. Belle calls it a testament to what the place means and declares that at least now EJ will keep the hospital afloat. Brady remains unsure if EJ is the right guy for the job. Belle questions if he really thinks Xander is better after he assaulted Philip and they just watched him leave in handcuffs. Brady thought the district attorney was supposed to be all about innocent until proven guilty. Belle argues that Xander is guilty and reveals that Jada was granted a court order to look at the security footage which showed Xander walking in to the Salem Inn ten minutes before Philip was beaten and walked out twenty minutes after. Belle says she understands that Xander is known for these blind rages. Brady admits he’s been on the receiving end and it’s not fun, so he wouldn’t be surprised if Xander did it. Brady then remarks that he just can’t believe he wrote EJ DiMera on the ballot.

EJ walks through the town square and calls Kayla to happily confirm the hospital is now officially safe in his loving hands. EJ says he’s sorry it had to come to this and brings up how much good he could’ve done already if she hadn’t rejected in his initial generous offer for weeks. EJ tells Kayla they will talk soon and hangs up. Eric Brady then returns to Salem and comes through the town square, stopping when he comes across EJ. EJ welcomes Eric back to Salem. Eric is afraid to ask about his good mood. EJ informs Eric that he is now the new owner of University Hospital. Eric questions why he bought the hospital. EJ brings up the hospital being on the verge of bankruptcy while he had the means and wanted to do a good deed. EJ says he’s serious that a lot has changed since Eric’s departure including his sense of moral responsibility. Eric says he’d love to celebrate his jolly mood but considering John is in the hospital cause of severe burn wounds, he doesn’t have time. EJ hopes John makes a full recovery and asks if Nicole and baby Jude are with him, saying he’d love to say hello. Eric is sure he would but says they didn’t make the trip. EJ calls that odd and asks if there’s trouble in paradise. Eric responds that he doesn’t have time for this as he needs to get to John and Marlena, so he hurries off.

Belle tells Brady that she knows EJ is not his favorite person. Brady agrees to be less vocal about his opinions as they are here for John. Belle adds that she’s very aware that EJ has made his share of questionable choices but she really believes he’s trying to do good with his life now as the shooting was a huge wake up call. Kristen comes over with Rachel so Brady asks Belle to give them a moment. Kristen informs Brady that Sarah gave them the clear to take Rachel home. Rachel asks if she can see John first. Brady says that John doesn’t really look like himself right now which Rachel questions. Brady says he’s been hurt badly but Rachel says she’s not scared to see and wants to give him the card she made. Brady suggests doing it another day and that she just take it easy. Rachel guesses that Kristen told him that she heard Johnny arguing with EJ on the night he was shot and that he had a gun. Johnny then appears behind them at the hospital.

Marlena and Paul tell John that they are right there. Paul calls John a real hero for what he did to save Bo, but says he has a new mission now to heal fast. Paul tells John that he’s so glad they found each other and they both wish he was there for him growing up but he feels like the luckiest guy in the world to have him now and be able to call him dad. Paul flashes back to first calling John “dad”. Paul tells John that he’s so proud to be his son. John manages to respond that he’s proud to be his dad.

Belle calls Shawn and leaves a message to check in on how Bo’s doing and asks him to call her when he gets a chance. Will Horton then arrives at the hospital and hugs Belle.

EJ calls Dr. Jeffrey Russell and informs him that he’s the new owner of University Hospital, declaring that they won. EJ says they will set up a meeting to discuss their plan moving forward. EJ says they will talk soon and hangs up. EJ had sat down at the bench in front of the Tom and Alice Horton plaque, then questions why they are looking at him like that and walks away.

Will asks Belle how John is. Belle responds that he’s defying doctor’s expectations as usual. Belle asks about Sami since she heard their flight was delayed by volcanic ash. Will says they were luckily able to get another flight. Belle asks if he’s seen Carrie. Will confirms he saw her at the Salem Inn where she was doing some work but she’ll be by to see everybody later. Belle mentions running in to Arianna and not even recognizing her as she grew up so fast. Will admits he wasn’t super happy with the timing of her visit to Salem and missing her graduation ceremony, but he’s glad she’s here now and able to see John. Will then asks if now is a good time for him to see John. Belle agrees to walk him to John’s room. As they walk on, Johnny asks Brady if there’s any updates on John. Brady responds that he’s doing better than expected. Johnny calls that good news and says Chanel wanted him to bring pastries since most people probably hadn’t eaten much. Johnny offers Rachel, but she says she’s not hungry. Kristen says she hasn’t been feeling well. Rachel asks Kristen if they can please go see John now. Kristen suggests coming back tomorrow when they are feeling better. Brady decides he’ll give John her card as they hug. Johnny tells Rachel to feel better and offers a fist bump but Rachel just looks at him and walks away with Kristen. Johnny questions Brady about Rachel being so shy around him.

Will joins Marlena and Paul in John’s hospital room. Marlena hugs Will and tells him how good it is to see him in person. Will hugs Paul and asks how he is as they say it’s good to see each other. Paul asks how Sonny is doing. Will says he’s good and would’ve loved to be there but he’s dealing with work stuff in Arizona. Will thanks Paul for helping bring John home. Paul says it was mostly Andrew and he just provided backup and wanted to be there when they found him. Marlena is sure John appreciated Paul being the first friendly face he saw. Paul steps out to go check in with Andrew. Marlena suggests Will have some time himself with John and she’ll be back in awhile as she then exits. Will sits with John and admits it’s tough seeing him like this, but he knows he will bounce back as he always does. Will talks about John always being there for him and supporting him, so that’s what he’s going to do for him. Will flashes back to coming out to John and says if anybody taught him courage, it was John.

Eric arrives at the hospital where Rachel runs up to hug him. Eric greets Kristen and asks how John is doing, noting that it was really nice to bring Rachel to see him. Rachel informs him that she wasn’t allowed to see John. Kristen explains that Rachel wasn’t feeling well so she’s going to get her home so she can rest. Eric tells Rachel that he hopes she feels better as she and Kristen get on the elevator. Johnny asks Brady if he thinks EJ has been bad mouthing him to Rachel since he cut him off. Brady assures it’s not that and that Rachel just hasn’t been feeling well. Eric comes over and hugs Brady, asking how John and Marlena are doing. Brady tells him that John is hanging in while Marlena comes over with Paul and says she could use a hug. Paul tells Eric that John is getting more responsive and even said a few words, joking that he’s going to hold him to seeing a Cubs game soon. Belle comes over and hugs Eric. Belle asks about her nephew Jude. Eric says he didn’t make the trip but has videos on his phone. Eric pulls out his phone to show videos of Jude as Belle, Marlena, Brady, and Paul gather around, laughing together while Johnny looks over at them and just walks away.

Will talks to John about Arianna until Johnny enters the room. They hug and agree it’s been way too long. Will jokes that John is probably tired of him talking his ear off and that Johnny was always his favorite, pointing out that he was named after him. Johnny responds that he’s not sure he’s worthy of carrying on John’s name. Will questions why not but Eric enters and asks if they’ve got room for one more. Eric hugs Will and says it’s good to see him. Eric points out that Johnny snuck off before he could say hello. Johnny says he didn’t want to interrupt the family reunion but Eric hugs him and says it’s not a family reunion without him. The three of them turn to John. Eric decides he will say a quick prayer and sits at John’s side while Will and Johnny exit the room. Eric tells John that he’s been a father figure to him for most of his life and been a role model too as he flashes back to a past time between them.

Will asks Johnny if everything is okay as it seems like he’s in a little bit of a funk. Johnny guesses he’s just having a bit of an identity crisis ever since finding out that he wouldn’t be here if EJ hadn’t raped Sami and that everyone in their family knew about it, including Will. Will says he’s sorry as he can’t imagine what he must be feeling. Johnny says it wasn’t Will’s job to tell him. Johnny feels he doesn’t really know where he fits in to this family anymore. Will calls Johnny his brother and says he’s loved him since the day he was born. Will admits he had a tough time when he found out about what happened but it didn’t change for a second how he felt about Johnny. Will adds that he’s here if Johnny wants to vent because if he keeps that anger inside, it’s going to get out someway and probably in a way that hurts him. Will gets a call from Sonny and steps away to answer it. Marlena comes over and tells Johnny that Belle and Brady are heading for the chapel if he’d like to join them. Johnny tells Marlena about he and Chanel being back together. Marlena hugs him and says she’s happy to hear that. Marlena asks if there’s any news on EJ.

Kristen brings Rachel home in to the living room of the DiMera Mansion where EJ greets them. Rachel asks for ice cream but Kristen says no because of her stomachache. Kristen suggests Rachel go upstairs and lay down, then she will have Cook bring her something. After Rachel exits, EJ guesses it must have been horribly upsetting for Rachel to hear about John’s accident. Kristen responds that it’s not the only horribly upsetting thing for her lately. Kristen knows they haven’t been on the best terms but reveals that Rachel witnessed something on the night EJ was shot. EJ calls it terrible as he thought she was asleep when Chad found him. Kristen says she was. Kristen asks if EJ has recovered any memories of the moments leading up to the shooting. EJ says no, so Kristen says she’s really sorry to tell him this but Rachel heard EJ and Johnny arguing that night and Johnny had a gun.

Brady visits with John in the hospital. Brady talks about always trying to get his life straight and even through all the messed up relationships, substance abuse, and feeling like the worst parent, John was always there to support him and pick him up to let him know he was loved. Brady flashes back to John talking to him about his mother Isabella. Brady thanks John for always keeping the memory of his mother alive for him. Brady talks about John and Marlena raising him with grace and love and that’s the kind of dad he wants to try to be. Belle joins Brady and says it’s really hard to see John like that again. Brady talks about John being through Hell and back, yet he can’t recall more of a rally cry from friends and family. Belle feels somehow they can will him out of the hospital bed by letting him know how important and loved he is. Brady decides to let Belle have some moments with John and exits the room. Belle sits at John’s side and says this is all too familiar as she flashes back to sitting at John’s hospital bed years ago. John reaches for her hand and manages to say a few words, exciting Belle.

Brady asks Paul about plans for his big Salem wedding. Paul clarifies he didn’t say it would be big while Eric is surprised to learn Paul and Andrew are getting married and asks if they’ve set a date yet. Paul says they agreed to do it when they know John can be there, so hopefully soon. Brady suggests Eric as the officiant. Eric says he’d be honored which excites Paul. Eric asks where Andrew is. Paul says that he and Shane are being debriefed by the ISA but should be back soon. Paul adds that John should be back on his feet and they will celebrate with a Salem wedding. Paul decides it will be big. Johnny sits with Marlena and tells her about seeing EJ on the ground in the town square, struggling to get up, and he thought it serves him right so he just walked away and at the time, it felt like the right thing to leave him there but now he feels ashamed because it makes him feel like EJ and he doesn’t want to be like him, ever. Marlena encourages that he’s not going to be like him. Marlena says Johnny will make some mistakes, do things good and bad, but they will all be his choices. Marlena hopes in the end, they will be choices he can be proud of.

EJ appreciates Kristen’s sisterly concern but assures Rachel must be mistaken and perhaps it was a bad dream. Kristen admits she thought the same at first, but she knows her daughter and she really thinks they need to take this seriously. EJ asks if Rachel has any evidence of this so called memory that she suddenly decided to share. Kristen says no, but it’s not hard to believe since Johnny is telling anyone that he wishes EJ was dead. Kristen says she’s sorry as she knows that’s really hard to hear and that he doesn’t want to see his son in prison. EJ responds that Johnny is not going to prison because Kristen is not going to say anything about this and neither is Rachel.

Brady, Eric, Paul, and Belle gather around at the hospital as Marlena comes over to announce that the burn specialist say John’s test results are absolutely amazing and went on to say his recovery seems to be absolutely miraculous. Brady declares that it’s like Belle said, they willed him to get better with love. Marlena says love will do that. Marlena suggests they all go home, eat, and try to get some rest. Paul questions them going home and asks what about Marlena. Belle tells Marlena that she should come home but Marlena says she’s staying right here. Brady guesses they will see her in the morning then. Marlena says she loves them all and thanks them for being there.

Kristen says she knew EJ’s true self would emerge and asks how long he’s known. EJ claims not to know anything and that he’s simply protecting his son from baseless accusations. Kristen understands more than anyone wanting to protect your child as it’s the DiMera way. Kristen declares she will make sure Rachel keeps quiet, if he tells her where her mother is.

Johnny and Will walk through the town square together. Will says he’s getting dinner with Arianna but he’d love to talk more since Johnny said he didn’t feel worthy of carrying John’s name. Johnny talks about just being hard on himself while John is a hero and an amazing husband and father which he doesn’t know if he can live up to. Will says there will only be one John Black, but he thinks John Roman is pretty great too. Johnny thanks him as they hug.

Kristen says if EJ wants to protect Johnny, he will give her mother back to her and then she will make sure that Rachel doesn’t say anything against him. EJ tells Kristen that her mother will never set foot in Salem and if she does, she’ll never see her again. Kristen asks if they have a deal, so they shake hands.

Marlena lays at John’s side and says it’s nice to have him awake. Marlena hopes he was as touched as she was by all of his loved ones coming to see him today as he has impacted so many lives and now they are alone. Marlena says no matter what obstacles they’ve faced, they have always ended up together as she flashes back to a past time they had together in Italy, throwing a coin in the fountain to make a wish.

Update written by Joseph

At the hospital, Brady asks Kayla if there’s any update on John. Kayla says there’s nothing new. Brady brings up that John squeezed Carrie’s hand. Kayla says that is good but warns that he’s still in very critical condition. Kayla adds that if anyone can pull out of something like this, it’s John Black.

Jada is in her office at the police station and starts texting Shawn first to check on him but erases it and then starts to question why he lied about sick but erases that and just texts that she hopes he’s feeling better. Belle comes in and says she has some details about a few cases that she wanted to talk through with her. Belle hopes them working together doesn’t have to be awkward. Jada says they are adults so she’d like to think so. Jada adds that she heard about John and the entire police station is pulling for him. Belle calls it touching to see how many people are impacted by John. Jada then asks if Belle has heard from Shawn.

Kristen questions Rachel thinking she heard a gunshot in real life and asks if she remembers anything else. Rachel recalls the night EJ was shot and says she woke up because she heard yelling, so she snuck downstairs to see what was going on and Johnny was there, fighting with EJ, and he had a gun. Kristen asks if she’s sure because bad dreams can seem very real. Rachel assures this wasn’t a dream. Kristen reminds Rachel that she had a nightmare about a gunshot after her birthday party, but it was a tray falling and asks if she’s sure she didn’t dream the rest. Rachel insists that it was real. Kristen questions why she didn’t tell her until just now if she saw this months ago. Rachel says that she didn’t want Johnny to get in trouble and then says that EJ kidnapped her Grandma, so he got what he deserved.

Chad finds EJ struggling after falling down in the town square and rushes up to ask what happened.

Julie goes to the Kiriakis Mansion and gives Maggie copies of Xander and EJ’s proposals to the hospital, asking which one she’d like to read first. Julie admits she’s not crazy about either of them being in charge of the hospital. Julie though they should go over the pitches before the big vote today. Julie then notices the empty space where Victor’s portrait was and asks what happened. Maggie responds that Xander happened.

Xander sits at the Brady Pub and calls Sarah, arguing that she can’t keep sending him to voicemail because Victoria is his daughter and she will not keep him from seeing her. Xander warns Sarah to call him back right now or the next call will be from his attorney.

Brady asks Kayla if he can go see John. Kayla says of course, but Marlena is in there now so Brady decides to wait. Kayla says John is doing better as his labs have improved significantly, so she is cautiously optimistic. Brady says he will be too then and asks what about Bo and if she’s heard from Hope or Shawn.

Belle tells Jada that she hasn’t heard from Shawn today and asks why. Jada informs her that Shawn called in sick yesterday, so Belle says it must be pretty bad then. Jada says the thing is, she saw Shawn in the town square and he sure didn’t seem sick. Belle asks if she thinks he’s lying. Jada says he seemed fine to her as he was hanging out with Steve and another guy. Jada decides she should swing by Shawn’s place to see how he’s doing but Belle stops her and says she doesn’t need to do that. Jada asks why not and if Belle knows what’s really going on with Shawn. Belle then admits that she does.

Kristen tells Rachel that she’s sorry as she never should’ve said that and grown ups sometimes say things they don’t mean when they are angry. Rachel argues that EJ sent her Grandma away. Kristen says that doesn’t mean she wants him hurt. Kristen knows Rachel is scared but thinks it’s really important that she tells her everything. Kristen asks if Rachel saw Johnny shoot EJ. Rachel admits she didn’t see him shoot, just that she saw Johnny with a gun so she got scared and ran back upstairs. Kristen says that’s good and asks if she heard a gunshot. Rachel admits she doesn’t remember hearing one because she went back to sleep. Kristen says if Johnny didn’t do anything bad then she wouldn’t want to get him in trouble. Kristen decides it’s important that they keep this to themselves and not tell anyone else. Rachel still doesn’t feel good. Kristen understands she’s been keeping this secret for a long time. Kristen hopes that Rachel telling her will make her feel better but Rachel says she now feels worse and she can’t stand it as Kristen hugs her.

EJ pulls himself onto the bench and tells Chad that he’s fine and he just tripped. Chad doesn’t believe that’s all and says there’s obviously more to this. EJ then admits that Johnny was there when he fell and he almost offered a hand, but then he turned and walked away. Chad says he’s sorry but EJ says that he deserved it. EJ has a flashback of being shot and says that he deserved all of it.

Julie asks Maggie why Xander stole Victor’s portrait. Maggie assumes it was in a fit of anger. Julie guesses it was because it was a reminder of Konstantin, who had it made. Julie never understood how Maggie could live with the portrait, considering Konstantin was the man responsible for Victor’s death. Maggie knows in her head it didn’t make sense but in her heart, she couldn’t let it go because it made her feel like Victor was watching over them. Maggie knows he’s been gone for a few years but the house still feels empty without him. Julie assures that she understands. Maggie clarifies that Xander’s anger wasn’t directed towards Konstantin’s memory but Victor and the baggage that comes with being his son. Julie finds that hypocritical since Xander is reaping all the benefits of being Victor’s son. Julie feels Xander had no right to steal a portrait that meant so much to Maggie. Julie adds that she could understand why Maggie won’t vote for Xander this time. Maggie responds that what Xander did to Victor’s portrait is the least of her concerns as it’s what he did to her family that chills her bones.

Xander calls Melinda Trask and says he wanted to have a chat with her about a custody suit over his daughter. Xander says that her reputation in this field precedes her and he knows she plays to win, even if that means fighting dirty which is exactly what he will need her to do.

Julie can’t believe Xander attacked Philip. Maggie states that Sarah believes he did. Julie asks if he confessed. Maggie says no, but he didn’t deny it either, so Sarah is horrified and thinks their marriage is over. Julie says she’s sorry but Maggie says if Xander did attack Philip, she doesn’t want him anywhere near Sarah or Victoria. Julie adds that she doesn’t want Xander near Maggie and calls it another mess they have gotten in to. Julie worries that if Xander did attack Philip and they vote for him, it would put the hospital back at square one while Maggie questions how they can vote for EJ since he always gets away with his crimes and is no stranger to this kind of brutality either. Julie declares that whatever happens, they are faced with an impossible choice.

Chad tells EJ that he wishes he could say how Johnny feels is totally out of line but he doesn’t think his open hostility is good for him or the family. Chad offers to talk to him but EJ doesn’t think it would do much good at this point. EJ thanks Chad for the offer and says he should get going since the hospital board meeting is today and he doesn’t want to give Xander a leg up. Chad decides he will go with him but first he wants to ask EJ if he had anything to do with Versavix being stolen and returned. EJ jokes that it’s becoming a habit of Chad to ruin a nice moment by accusing him of a crime. Chad says he’s not asking as a reporter but as EJ’s brother and someone who knows what he’s capable of.

Kayla informs Brady that she spoke to Hope this morning and got Bo’s latest test results which she believes is good news as not only is the infection not spreading anymore, it seems to have begun to resolve. Brady says it sounds like some kind of miracle drug. Kayla says it might be but the real test will be to see if it repairs the damage done to his organs. Brady says he will continue to pray for Bo. Brady brings up the board meeting and knows it doesn’t seem as important. Kayla acknowledges that the outcome of the vote is life and death stakes too. Brady admits he thought it was a no brainer as Victor would’ve wanted him to vote for Xander, but now he’s not so sure. Kayla feels the same way since EJ owning the hospital was a non starter for her but after what happened to Philip, she has to wonder which is the lesser of two evils. Brady says that’s his dilemma as well. Brady adds that Kristen is pushing for him to vote for EJ and normally he would never consider doing that. Brady then gets a call from Kristen, so Kayla wishes him luck and goes to see patients. Kristen informs Brady that Rachel isn’t feeling well so she was going to bring her in to the hospital to be checked out. Brady informs her that he’s already at the hospital so he will just wait. Kristen tells him that she doesn’t think it’s anything serious physically, but they have a lot to talk about.

Jada asks Belle what Shawn is up to. Belle promises he’s not in any trouble. Jada says she will need more than that. Belle explains that Shawn needed to go to Bo’s rehab facility to bring him a drug that could possibly save his life. Jada brings up knowing that Dr. Russell wouldn’t let Kayla have any of the drug and questions why Shawn wouldn’t let her know that he got a dose. Belle says she’s bound by confidentiality but guesses he didn’t want to incriminate Jada. Jada doesn’t understand then realizes the meth lab explosion. Jada questions if Shawn was involved then decides she doesn’t want to know. Jada asks if Shawn was there with John. Belle confirms that he was, but Shawn was not hurt. Jada encourages that John will get through this because he’s a fighter. Belle says that’s a fact, but he does have a long recovery in front of him no matter what. Belle adds that she’s been feeling useless, sitting around waiting for news so she thought she would get to work. Jada asks how she can help. Belle responds that she can help by nailing the bastard that attacked Philip.

Xander remains at the Pub and thinks about holding his daughter Victoria. Xander then grabs his phone and storms out of the Pub.

Jada tells Belle that she saw Philip’s condition and the look on Kate’s face when she found her son, beaten within an inch of his life. Belle calls it so frustrating with the Salem Inn being cagey about the security footage, so she hopes a judge will sign to turn it over. Jada wants evidence that Xander was there when Philip was attacked. Belle reveals that she did speak to someone who saw Xander in the town square, but the security footage is more reliable than a reluctant witness. Jada says they have means and opportunity but not the motive. Jada adds that Kate has a theory but she’s been very vague on the details. Belle might know the motive but she doesn’t want to speculate. Belle thinks the best thing that could happen is Philip waking up and telling them what happened. Jada hopes they can because it would be nice to tie up a high profile case, especially since EJ’s shooter is still out there.

EJ tells Chad that if he intended to remind him of what a pariah he’s become, he should’ve just left him on the ground. Chad points out that’s not a denial. EJ then swears on their father that he did not steal the drugs and says to get ahead of his next accusation, that he had nothing to do with attacking Philip either. EJ asks if Chad is satisfied. Chad calls it just a question. EJ is sure he had to ask, but decides they can’t fight with each other right now. EJ says they were so focused on their petty family squabbles that their company was stolen out from under them. EJ declares the lesson in the Titan takeover is that they are at their weakest when they are divided. Chad calls that pretty inspirational. EJ says they need to bring the family together. EJ says his word means next to nothing to them now but Chad’s still carries weight, so he wants Chad to bring them together. Chad asks what he needs from him. EJ needs Chad to vote for him in the hospital board meeting. EJ knows he has to be objective but argues that they both know the hospital would better in his hands than Titan’s. EJ adds that as far as their family goes, they may have lost their father’s company but by acquiring the hospital, they can start a new and better chapter. EJ declares the decision is in Chad’s hands. Chad tells EJ that he can count on him.

Maggie and Julie join Kayla at the hospital. Maggie says every vote counts so they intend to make their voices heard. Kayla asks if they went over the proposals. Julie confirms they did. Maggie wishes the men behind them weren’t so complicated. Julie asks if there’s not a third option. Kayla confirms there isn’t so Julie feels they are dancing with the devil either way. Maggie shudders to think of what the fallout will be after the votes are tallied because God only knows how EJ or Xander will retaliate against anyone who sides against them. Julie argues that Tom Horton would not stand for this. Kayla asks who said they are going to and talks about being tired of it. Kayla declares that she has a plan. Xander then arrives and says he hopes he’s not interrupting anything.

Brady joins Kristen and Rachel in a hospital room. Brady checks on Rachel, who says her stomach hurts. Rachel wants to get some water and says she hates being in the room. Kristen tells her to come back soon because Sarah will be there while Brady questions letting her go on her own. Kristen assures that she’s a big girl now. Brady asks about Kristen not thinking Rachel’s problem is physical. Kristen explains that Rachel completely broke down when she told her about John. Brady is sorry he wasn’t there. Kristen states that Rachel loves John so much so she thinks that news was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Kristen informs Brady that Rachel has been hiding something from them for months now and she thinks that’s what has been eating her up inside. Brady questions what she has been hiding. Kristen reveals that Rachel says she saw Johnny and EJ arguing on the night EJ was shot and that Johnny was pointing a gun at EJ. Brady is shocked and questions why she didn’t say something sooner. Kristen explains that Rachel didn’t want to get Johnny in trouble and has been terrified this whole time. Kristen says her sick days and nightmares all make sense now. Brady feels they have to go to the police but Kristen says no way in Hell.

Belle asks Jada if there’s been no progress on EJ’s case. Jada responds that other than Ava Vitali, they have nothing. Jada remarks that Ava is not making herself look innocent by fleeing. Belle says that Ava never stays away from Salem for long. Jada admits that she’s starting to doubt that Ava pulled the trigger. Belle agrees, noting that Ava is not sloppy. Jada calls it pretty damn scary because that means EJ’s shooter could still be in Salem and it might be someone that they know.

Brady understands that Johnny is family but if he shot EJ, they can’t just sweep that under the rug since EJ almost died. Kristen argues that if they go to the police, Rachel will have to testify and she will not put her through that. Brady insists that they would be there for her to get her through it. Kristen asks if she could get through losing them too, reminding him that they are on thin ice with child protective services and if they feel she’s in an unsafe environment, they will take her away from them.

Xander comments on the tension as Kayla asks how she can help him. Xander asks if Sarah is working because he wanted to have a word with her before the board meeting. Kayla remarks that she’s not obligated to discuss staffing with outside parties. Maggie reminds Xander that she told him to stay the hell away from Sarah. Xander doesn’t want her meddling in his life. Maggie declares that Sarah made it clear that she doesn’t want to see him right now. Maggie, Julie, and Kayla all state that Xander will have to go through them to get to Sarah. Xander remarks that he won’t be some outside party when he buys the hospital. EJ arrives with Chad and says that’s if he buys the hospital. EJ calls it an exciting day and says he looks forward to seeing them all in the board room. Xander walks away as EJ and Chad head in the opposite direction while Julie repeats that they are between a rock and a hard place. Maggie thanks Julie and Kayla for having her back. Julie says she’d say anything to wipe the smirk off Xander’s face. Kayla assures that they are Maggie’s friends and always have her back. Julie admits she held her tongue when Xander and Sarah got engaged in hopes that Xander had changed. Maggie complains about Xander harassing Sarah the last few days with incessant calls and texts. Kayla can’t imagine how sad Sarah is. Maggie confirms that Sarah is heartbroken and now they all know what she’s dealing with. Maggie says it’s not just Sarah, but the hospital. Julie asks Kayla about saying she had a plan. Kayla says it’s more of a silver lining and talks about how she was thinking about Xander and EJ having a tendency to bully them. Kayla declares that what a bully needs most is an audience and suggests taking that away from them. Kayla reveals she’s worked out with the hospital to make the board vote anonymous, so neither EJ or Xander will know who is really on their side and they don’t have to sit around waiting to see who will betray who. Julie compares it to Love Island USA. Chad returns with coffees for the ladies. Kayla questions Chad not watching EJ and Xander, asking what if they get in a fight before the meeting. Chad says he’s not worried as EJ has already staked out the conference room and Xander was in the cafeteria last he checked. Maggie hopes Xander is not near Sarah. Chad says Xander was on the phone, talking about business. Julie hopes he’s not on the phone too long because the sooner they get finished with this damn vote, the better. Kayla guesses Chad has already decided who he’s voting for. Chad confirms he has and asks if they have. Julie responds that she doesn’t think they’ll ever make peace with their vote when they have these two guys to choose from. Kayla decides it’s time to get on with the inevitable and gather the board.

Kristen tells Brady that Rachel hates getting tests done. Brady points out how happy Rachel was to see Sarah so she’ll be fine. Kristen remarks that Sarah is not her mother but admits they needed this time to get on the same page. Brady agrees but doesn’t think they are. Brady says he’s relieved that Rachel told Kristen about what she saw and isn’t carrying around the secret anymore, but says they can’t ignore it. Kristen argues that they can’t go to the cops either. Brady offers to go to Belle but Kristen says absolutely not since she’s the district attorney. Brady remembers he has to get to the board vote. Kristen makes Brady promise not to discuss this with Belle until they discuss it further. Brady says as soon as he gets back, they are going to sit down as a family because he needs to hear from Rachel on exactly what she saw. Brady then exits the room.

Belle comes across EJ at the hospital and asks what he’s doing there. EJ reminds her that the board vote is today. EJ says he was going to check in on John, but he figured that would just upset Marlena even more. EJ tells Belle that he’s so sorry, noting that he and John rarely saw eye to eye but he always respected him. EJ calls John a great man and father and wishes that he could be half the father that John is. Belle calls that the nicest thing EJ has said about her family. EJ assures that he meant every word and says he may not be the church going type, but John will be in his prayers. Brady comes over and mocks EJ praying for John after years of his family trying to destroy him. Brady remarks that Stefano is probably looking up from Hell, hoping for an explosion to finish the job that he couldn’t. EJ tells Brady that he’s out of line while Brady argues that EJ is out of line being near any one in his family. Belle tells Brady that’s enough. Brady declares that his father survived all the crap that EJ’s father threw his way and he will beat the odds agian. Brady threatens EJ coming within an inch of his father’s room until Belle shouts that’s enough. Brady questions Belle siding with EJ over her brother. Belle says she’s not siding with anyone and is just asking him not to do this here today. Brady agrees that they need to focus their energy on John. Kayla, Maggie, and Julie come back by and tell Chad that they got their votes locked in, so the only one unaccounted for is Brady, who Kayla points out is there now. Chad mentions that Xander should be up any second to see how things are shaking out. Julie declares that however it shakes out, it’s a lose-lose situation for all of them. EJ tells Brady that he never intended to intrude on his family’s pain as he knows how devastated Sami and Sydney are, noting that he spoke with Sydney about their flight being grounded and being unable to make it. Kayla comes over and says she’s sorry to interrupt but the board members have all cast their ballots and are only waiting on Brady’s. EJ assumes Brady is going to be voting for Xander. Xander then comes over and questions if EJ is resorting to trying to intimidate board members. Xander guesses EJ must not have much faith in his own proposal. Kayla then announces they have chosen to make the vote anonymous to prevent intimidation or retaliation. Kayla then asks to speak to Brady in private so they step away. Kayla asks if Brady still hasn’t decided. Brady responds that there’s a lot riding on this. Kayla then reveals to Brady that at this moment, it’s tied which means it all comes down to him and the fate of University Hospital is in Brady’s hands.

Rachel returns to Kristen and tells her that she had fun because Sarah turned all the tests in to a game. Rachel asks where Brady is. Kristen says he had to take care of something but he will be back to check on her. Kristen asks what Sarah told her. Rachel says Sarah said her stomach hurts too when she is upset. Rachel adds that she’s feeling much better now and wonders how Sarah knew her birthday. Kristen remarks that she must’ve seen it on her chart. Rachel comments that Sarah is really nice. Kristen hugs Rachel and says she deserves to be treated like a princess.

Julie and Maggie decide to head to the cafeteria as Chad says he will let them know when the vote comes in but Jada then arrives and arrests Xander for the assault of Philip Kiriakis. Jada reads Xander his rights as everyone looks on.

Best Lines by Michele and Cheryl

Xander: Well, why stop there, darling? Why not blame me for every single sick person in this hospital. Hey, throw in climate change and the rise of fascism while you’re at it.

Xander: While you’re dishing out blame, you should save some for yourself.
Sarah: Me?
Xander: Yes. Poor innocent you, Sarah. I mean, be honest. If you told me about Philip and the forged letter months ago, he’d be out on his ass. All of this could have been prevented.

(to Javi about Gabi)
Leo: How did it go with Cruella?

(to Kristen about Brady when he hung up on him)
EJ: When you see that useless ex of yours, please educate him on proper phone etiquette.

(to Chad when he asked if EJ had anything to do with the missing drug)
EJ: This is becoming a habit of yours Chad. You ruin a nice moment by accusing me of a crime.

Days Opinions For The Week Of May 26, 2025

Opinion Article

by Michele & Cheryl

Marlena from Days

It was something that Maggie was willing to stand up to Xander now that the truth about Sarah is out. Maggie never wanted to see the worst in Xander no matter what he did, yet now she wants to make him pay for what he does to Sarah. Guess in Maggie’s eyes, Xander could do anything to other people, but he’s persona non grata if he does anything to her daughter. It was too little too late for her to be done with him now. We couldn’t believe Maggie when she blamed Xander for everything as if Sarah was innocent. Hopefully he will go after Maggie when he gets his revenge on Sarah. We are sick of Maggie’s holier than thou attitude as if she didn’t lie to him.

Marlena’s performance this week broke our hearts. She showed the right emotion when it came to John. Marlena handled it with grace even though she was worried about John. Deidre Hall deserves an Emmy for her amazing performance. She made us want to grab tissue when she wanted John to stay with her and not leave her. Knowing that Drake Hogestyn is no longer here made Marlena asking for John not to leave her even more painful.

We applaud the writers for showing the flashbacks of John. It was nice going down memory lane with some of the flashbacks. The writers did a fabulous job paying tribute to the late actor. If they are doing this for him before the character died, we look forward to what they will do when John dies. The flashbacks will make it more emotional.

While we’re applauding the writers, we want to applaud the other actors in John’s story. They did a great job with the material. It was heartbreaking seeing them break down over what was going on with John. The actors showed real emotion over John which made an impact and made the scenes powerful. We were invested as each of them talked about the kind of man John was.

Thumbs up to the writers for having Abe ask Kate about Philip. It wasn’t that long ago when Abe and Kate worked together on Body & Soul so it was good to see him show concern for Philip. It showed that Abe and Kate still care about each other and haven’t forgotten that they are friends. The writers deserve another thumbs up for bringing Paul, Carrie, Will, and Eric back to see John. It was a reminder of how much he meant to them.
