Paul and Marlena sit with John in his hospital room. Paul gets upset and starts blaming himself for not talking John out of going to the meth lab. Paul brings up how excited John was to see Marlena and complains that he should’ve insisted on going in his place and that he should be in the hospital bed instead of John. Marlena stops him and tells him that he’s wrong as John would never have forgiven himself if that happened. Marlena encourages that John’s stubbornness will get him through this. John then begins to wake up and calls out “Doc” to Marlena.

Brady sits with Belle, who says that Paul is in with John as she wanted to give them a few minutes together. Brady guesses he should wait until Rachel’s done with her appointment. Brady hopes Rachel just had an upset stomach and says now they have three reasons to be at the hospital. Belle calls it a testament to what the place means and declares that at least now EJ will keep the hospital afloat. Brady remains unsure if EJ is the right guy for the job. Belle questions if he really thinks Xander is better after he assaulted Philip and they just watched him leave in handcuffs. Brady thought the district attorney was supposed to be all about innocent until proven guilty. Belle argues that Xander is guilty and reveals that Jada was granted a court order to look at the security footage which showed Xander walking in to the Salem Inn ten minutes before Philip was beaten and walked out twenty minutes after. Belle says she understands that Xander is known for these blind rages. Brady admits he’s been on the receiving end and it’s not fun, so he wouldn’t be surprised if Xander did it. Brady then remarks that he just can’t believe he wrote EJ DiMera on the ballot.

EJ walks through the town square and calls Kayla to happily confirm the hospital is now officially safe in his loving hands. EJ says he’s sorry it had to come to this and brings up how much good he could’ve done already if she hadn’t rejected in his initial generous offer for weeks. EJ tells Kayla they will talk soon and hangs up. Eric Brady then returns to Salem and comes through the town square, stopping when he comes across EJ. EJ welcomes Eric back to Salem. Eric is afraid to ask about his good mood. EJ informs Eric that he is now the new owner of University Hospital. Eric questions why he bought the hospital. EJ brings up the hospital being on the verge of bankruptcy while he had the means and wanted to do a good deed. EJ says he’s serious that a lot has changed since Eric’s departure including his sense of moral responsibility. Eric says he’d love to celebrate his jolly mood but considering John is in the hospital cause of severe burn wounds, he doesn’t have time. EJ hopes John makes a full recovery and asks if Nicole and baby Jude are with him, saying he’d love to say hello. Eric is sure he would but says they didn’t make the trip. EJ calls that odd and asks if there’s trouble in paradise. Eric responds that he doesn’t have time for this as he needs to get to John and Marlena, so he hurries off.

Belle tells Brady that she knows EJ is not his favorite person. Brady agrees to be less vocal about his opinions as they are here for John. Belle adds that she’s very aware that EJ has made his share of questionable choices but she really believes he’s trying to do good with his life now as the shooting was a huge wake up call. Kristen comes over with Rachel so Brady asks Belle to give them a moment. Kristen informs Brady that Sarah gave them the clear to take Rachel home. Rachel asks if she can see John first. Brady says that John doesn’t really look like himself right now which Rachel questions. Brady says he’s been hurt badly but Rachel says she’s not scared to see and wants to give him the card she made. Brady suggests doing it another day and that she just take it easy. Rachel guesses that Kristen told him that she heard Johnny arguing with EJ on the night he was shot and that he had a gun. Johnny then appears behind them at the hospital.

Marlena and Paul tell John that they are right there. Paul calls John a real hero for what he did to save Bo, but says he has a new mission now to heal fast. Paul tells John that he’s so glad they found each other and they both wish he was there for him growing up but he feels like the luckiest guy in the world to have him now and be able to call him dad. Paul flashes back to first calling John “dad”. Paul tells John that he’s so proud to be his son. John manages to respond that he’s proud to be his dad.

Belle calls Shawn and leaves a message to check in on how Bo’s doing and asks him to call her when he gets a chance. Will Horton then arrives at the hospital and hugs Belle.

EJ calls Dr. Jeffrey Russell and informs him that he’s the new owner of University Hospital, declaring that they won. EJ says they will set up a meeting to discuss their plan moving forward. EJ says they will talk soon and hangs up. EJ had sat down at the bench in front of the Tom and Alice Horton plaque, then questions why they are looking at him like that and walks away.

Will asks Belle how John is. Belle responds that he’s defying doctor’s expectations as usual. Belle asks about Sami since she heard their flight was delayed by volcanic ash. Will says they were luckily able to get another flight. Belle asks if he’s seen Carrie. Will confirms he saw her at the Salem Inn where she was doing some work but she’ll be by to see everybody later. Belle mentions running in to Arianna and not even recognizing her as she grew up so fast. Will admits he wasn’t super happy with the timing of her visit to Salem and missing her graduation ceremony, but he’s glad she’s here now and able to see John. Will then asks if now is a good time for him to see John. Belle agrees to walk him to John’s room. As they walk on, Johnny asks Brady if there’s any updates on John. Brady responds that he’s doing better than expected. Johnny calls that good news and says Chanel wanted him to bring pastries since most people probably hadn’t eaten much. Johnny offers Rachel, but she says she’s not hungry. Kristen says she hasn’t been feeling well. Rachel asks Kristen if they can please go see John now. Kristen suggests coming back tomorrow when they are feeling better. Brady decides he’ll give John her card as they hug. Johnny tells Rachel to feel better and offers a fist bump but Rachel just looks at him and walks away with Kristen. Johnny questions Brady about Rachel being so shy around him.

Will joins Marlena and Paul in John’s hospital room. Marlena hugs Will and tells him how good it is to see him in person. Will hugs Paul and asks how he is as they say it’s good to see each other. Paul asks how Sonny is doing. Will says he’s good and would’ve loved to be there but he’s dealing with work stuff in Arizona. Will thanks Paul for helping bring John home. Paul says it was mostly Andrew and he just provided backup and wanted to be there when they found him. Marlena is sure John appreciated Paul being the first friendly face he saw. Paul steps out to go check in with Andrew. Marlena suggests Will have some time himself with John and she’ll be back in awhile as she then exits. Will sits with John and admits it’s tough seeing him like this, but he knows he will bounce back as he always does. Will talks about John always being there for him and supporting him, so that’s what he’s going to do for him. Will flashes back to coming out to John and says if anybody taught him courage, it was John.

Eric arrives at the hospital where Rachel runs up to hug him. Eric greets Kristen and asks how John is doing, noting that it was really nice to bring Rachel to see him. Rachel informs him that she wasn’t allowed to see John. Kristen explains that Rachel wasn’t feeling well so she’s going to get her home so she can rest. Eric tells Rachel that he hopes she feels better as she and Kristen get on the elevator. Johnny asks Brady if he thinks EJ has been bad mouthing him to Rachel since he cut him off. Brady assures it’s not that and that Rachel just hasn’t been feeling well. Eric comes over and hugs Brady, asking how John and Marlena are doing. Brady tells him that John is hanging in while Marlena comes over with Paul and says she could use a hug. Paul tells Eric that John is getting more responsive and even said a few words, joking that he’s going to hold him to seeing a Cubs game soon. Belle comes over and hugs Eric. Belle asks about her nephew Jude. Eric says he didn’t make the trip but has videos on his phone. Eric pulls out his phone to show videos of Jude as Belle, Marlena, Brady, and Paul gather around, laughing together while Johnny looks over at them and just walks away.

Will talks to John about Arianna until Johnny enters the room. They hug and agree it’s been way too long. Will jokes that John is probably tired of him talking his ear off and that Johnny was always his favorite, pointing out that he was named after him. Johnny responds that he’s not sure he’s worthy of carrying on John’s name. Will questions why not but Eric enters and asks if they’ve got room for one more. Eric hugs Will and says it’s good to see him. Eric points out that Johnny snuck off before he could say hello. Johnny says he didn’t want to interrupt the family reunion but Eric hugs him and says it’s not a family reunion without him. The three of them turn to John. Eric decides he will say a quick prayer and sits at John’s side while Will and Johnny exit the room. Eric tells John that he’s been a father figure to him for most of his life and been a role model too as he flashes back to a past time between them.

Will asks Johnny if everything is okay as it seems like he’s in a little bit of a funk. Johnny guesses he’s just having a bit of an identity crisis ever since finding out that he wouldn’t be here if EJ hadn’t raped Sami and that everyone in their family knew about it, including Will. Will says he’s sorry as he can’t imagine what he must be feeling. Johnny says it wasn’t Will’s job to tell him. Johnny feels he doesn’t really know where he fits in to this family anymore. Will calls Johnny his brother and says he’s loved him since the day he was born. Will admits he had a tough time when he found out about what happened but it didn’t change for a second how he felt about Johnny. Will adds that he’s here if Johnny wants to vent because if he keeps that anger inside, it’s going to get out someway and probably in a way that hurts him. Will gets a call from Sonny and steps away to answer it. Marlena comes over and tells Johnny that Belle and Brady are heading for the chapel if he’d like to join them. Johnny tells Marlena about he and Chanel being back together. Marlena hugs him and says she’s happy to hear that. Marlena asks if there’s any news on EJ.

Kristen brings Rachel home in to the living room of the DiMera Mansion where EJ greets them. Rachel asks for ice cream but Kristen says no because of her stomachache. Kristen suggests Rachel go upstairs and lay down, then she will have Cook bring her something. After Rachel exits, EJ guesses it must have been horribly upsetting for Rachel to hear about John’s accident. Kristen responds that it’s not the only horribly upsetting thing for her lately. Kristen knows they haven’t been on the best terms but reveals that Rachel witnessed something on the night EJ was shot. EJ calls it terrible as he thought she was asleep when Chad found him. Kristen says she was. Kristen asks if EJ has recovered any memories of the moments leading up to the shooting. EJ says no, so Kristen says she’s really sorry to tell him this but Rachel heard EJ and Johnny arguing that night and Johnny had a gun.

Brady visits with John in the hospital. Brady talks about always trying to get his life straight and even through all the messed up relationships, substance abuse, and feeling like the worst parent, John was always there to support him and pick him up to let him know he was loved. Brady flashes back to John talking to him about his mother Isabella. Brady thanks John for always keeping the memory of his mother alive for him. Brady talks about John and Marlena raising him with grace and love and that’s the kind of dad he wants to try to be. Belle joins Brady and says it’s really hard to see John like that again. Brady talks about John being through Hell and back, yet he can’t recall more of a rally cry from friends and family. Belle feels somehow they can will him out of the hospital bed by letting him know how important and loved he is. Brady decides to let Belle have some moments with John and exits the room. Belle sits at John’s side and says this is all too familiar as she flashes back to sitting at John’s hospital bed years ago. John reaches for her hand and manages to say a few words, exciting Belle.

Brady asks Paul about plans for his big Salem wedding. Paul clarifies he didn’t say it would be big while Eric is surprised to learn Paul and Andrew are getting married and asks if they’ve set a date yet. Paul says they agreed to do it when they know John can be there, so hopefully soon. Brady suggests Eric as the officiant. Eric says he’d be honored which excites Paul. Eric asks where Andrew is. Paul says that he and Shane are being debriefed by the ISA but should be back soon. Paul adds that John should be back on his feet and they will celebrate with a Salem wedding. Paul decides it will be big. Johnny sits with Marlena and tells her about seeing EJ on the ground in the town square, struggling to get up, and he thought it serves him right so he just walked away and at the time, it felt like the right thing to leave him there but now he feels ashamed because it makes him feel like EJ and he doesn’t want to be like him, ever. Marlena encourages that he’s not going to be like him. Marlena says Johnny will make some mistakes, do things good and bad, but they will all be his choices. Marlena hopes in the end, they will be choices he can be proud of.

EJ appreciates Kristen’s sisterly concern but assures Rachel must be mistaken and perhaps it was a bad dream. Kristen admits she thought the same at first, but she knows her daughter and she really thinks they need to take this seriously. EJ asks if Rachel has any evidence of this so called memory that she suddenly decided to share. Kristen says no, but it’s not hard to believe since Johnny is telling anyone that he wishes EJ was dead. Kristen says she’s sorry as she knows that’s really hard to hear and that he doesn’t want to see his son in prison. EJ responds that Johnny is not going to prison because Kristen is not going to say anything about this and neither is Rachel.

Brady, Eric, Paul, and Belle gather around at the hospital as Marlena comes over to announce that the burn specialist say John’s test results are absolutely amazing and went on to say his recovery seems to be absolutely miraculous. Brady declares that it’s like Belle said, they willed him to get better with love. Marlena says love will do that. Marlena suggests they all go home, eat, and try to get some rest. Paul questions them going home and asks what about Marlena. Belle tells Marlena that she should come home but Marlena says she’s staying right here. Brady guesses they will see her in the morning then. Marlena says she loves them all and thanks them for being there.

Kristen says she knew EJ’s true self would emerge and asks how long he’s known. EJ claims not to know anything and that he’s simply protecting his son from baseless accusations. Kristen understands more than anyone wanting to protect your child as it’s the DiMera way. Kristen declares she will make sure Rachel keeps quiet, if he tells her where her mother is.

Johnny and Will walk through the town square together. Will says he’s getting dinner with Arianna but he’d love to talk more since Johnny said he didn’t feel worthy of carrying John’s name. Johnny talks about just being hard on himself while John is a hero and an amazing husband and father which he doesn’t know if he can live up to. Will says there will only be one John Black, but he thinks John Roman is pretty great too. Johnny thanks him as they hug.

Kristen says if EJ wants to protect Johnny, he will give her mother back to her and then she will make sure that Rachel doesn’t say anything against him. EJ tells Kristen that her mother will never set foot in Salem and if she does, she’ll never see her again. Kristen asks if they have a deal, so they shake hands.

Marlena lays at John’s side and says it’s nice to have him awake. Marlena hopes he was as touched as she was by all of his loved ones coming to see him today as he has impacted so many lives and now they are alone. Marlena says no matter what obstacles they’ve faced, they have always ended up together as she flashes back to a past time they had together in Italy, throwing a coin in the fountain to make a wish.

At the hospital, Brady asks Kayla if there’s any update on John. Kayla says there’s nothing new. Brady brings up that John squeezed Carrie’s hand. Kayla says that is good but warns that he’s still in very critical condition. Kayla adds that if anyone can pull out of something like this, it’s John Black.

Jada is in her office at the police station and starts texting Shawn first to check on him but erases it and then starts to question why he lied about sick but erases that and just texts that she hopes he’s feeling better. Belle comes in and says she has some details about a few cases that she wanted to talk through with her. Belle hopes them working together doesn’t have to be awkward. Jada says they are adults so she’d like to think so. Jada adds that she heard about John and the entire police station is pulling for him. Belle calls it touching to see how many people are impacted by John. Jada then asks if Belle has heard from Shawn.

Kristen questions Rachel thinking she heard a gunshot in real life and asks if she remembers anything else. Rachel recalls the night EJ was shot and says she woke up because she heard yelling, so she snuck downstairs to see what was going on and Johnny was there, fighting with EJ, and he had a gun. Kristen asks if she’s sure because bad dreams can seem very real. Rachel assures this wasn’t a dream. Kristen reminds Rachel that she had a nightmare about a gunshot after her birthday party, but it was a tray falling and asks if she’s sure she didn’t dream the rest. Rachel insists that it was real. Kristen questions why she didn’t tell her until just now if she saw this months ago. Rachel says that she didn’t want Johnny to get in trouble and then says that EJ kidnapped her Grandma, so he got what he deserved.

Chad finds EJ struggling after falling down in the town square and rushes up to ask what happened.

Julie goes to the Kiriakis Mansion and gives Maggie copies of Xander and EJ’s proposals to the hospital, asking which one she’d like to read first. Julie admits she’s not crazy about either of them being in charge of the hospital. Julie though they should go over the pitches before the big vote today. Julie then notices the empty space where Victor’s portrait was and asks what happened. Maggie responds that Xander happened.

Xander sits at the Brady Pub and calls Sarah, arguing that she can’t keep sending him to voicemail because Victoria is his daughter and she will not keep him from seeing her. Xander warns Sarah to call him back right now or the next call will be from his attorney.

Brady asks Kayla if he can go see John. Kayla says of course, but Marlena is in there now so Brady decides to wait. Kayla says John is doing better as his labs have improved significantly, so she is cautiously optimistic. Brady says he will be too then and asks what about Bo and if she’s heard from Hope or Shawn.

Belle tells Jada that she hasn’t heard from Shawn today and asks why. Jada informs her that Shawn called in sick yesterday, so Belle says it must be pretty bad then. Jada says the thing is, she saw Shawn in the town square and he sure didn’t seem sick. Belle asks if she thinks he’s lying. Jada says he seemed fine to her as he was hanging out with Steve and another guy. Jada decides she should swing by Shawn’s place to see how he’s doing but Belle stops her and says she doesn’t need to do that. Jada asks why not and if Belle knows what’s really going on with Shawn. Belle then admits that she does.

Kristen tells Rachel that she’s sorry as she never should’ve said that and grown ups sometimes say things they don’t mean when they are angry. Rachel argues that EJ sent her Grandma away. Kristen says that doesn’t mean she wants him hurt. Kristen knows Rachel is scared but thinks it’s really important that she tells her everything. Kristen asks if Rachel saw Johnny shoot EJ. Rachel admits she didn’t see him shoot, just that she saw Johnny with a gun so she got scared and ran back upstairs. Kristen says that’s good and asks if she heard a gunshot. Rachel admits she doesn’t remember hearing one because she went back to sleep. Kristen says if Johnny didn’t do anything bad then she wouldn’t want to get him in trouble. Kristen decides it’s important that they keep this to themselves and not tell anyone else. Rachel still doesn’t feel good. Kristen understands she’s been keeping this secret for a long time. Kristen hopes that Rachel telling her will make her feel better but Rachel says she now feels worse and she can’t stand it as Kristen hugs her.

EJ pulls himself onto the bench and tells Chad that he’s fine and he just tripped. Chad doesn’t believe that’s all and says there’s obviously more to this. EJ then admits that Johnny was there when he fell and he almost offered a hand, but then he turned and walked away. Chad says he’s sorry but EJ says that he deserved it. EJ has a flashback of being shot and says that he deserved all of it.

Julie asks Maggie why Xander stole Victor’s portrait. Maggie assumes it was in a fit of anger. Julie guesses it was because it was a reminder of Konstantin, who had it made. Julie never understood how Maggie could live with the portrait, considering Konstantin was the man responsible for Victor’s death. Maggie knows in her head it didn’t make sense but in her heart, she couldn’t let it go because it made her feel like Victor was watching over them. Maggie knows he’s been gone for a few years but the house still feels empty without him. Julie assures that she understands. Maggie clarifies that Xander’s anger wasn’t directed towards Konstantin’s memory but Victor and the baggage that comes with being his son. Julie finds that hypocritical since Xander is reaping all the benefits of being Victor’s son. Julie feels Xander had no right to steal a portrait that meant so much to Maggie. Julie adds that she could understand why Maggie won’t vote for Xander this time. Maggie responds that what Xander did to Victor’s portrait is the least of her concerns as it’s what he did to her family that chills her bones.

Xander calls Melinda Trask and says he wanted to have a chat with her about a custody suit over his daughter. Xander says that her reputation in this field precedes her and he knows she plays to win, even if that means fighting dirty which is exactly what he will need her to do.

Julie can’t believe Xander attacked Philip. Maggie states that Sarah believes he did. Julie asks if he confessed. Maggie says no, but he didn’t deny it either, so Sarah is horrified and thinks their marriage is over. Julie says she’s sorry but Maggie says if Xander did attack Philip, she doesn’t want him anywhere near Sarah or Victoria. Julie adds that she doesn’t want Xander near Maggie and calls it another mess they have gotten in to. Julie worries that if Xander did attack Philip and they vote for him, it would put the hospital back at square one while Maggie questions how they can vote for EJ since he always gets away with his crimes and is no stranger to this kind of brutality either. Julie declares that whatever happens, they are faced with an impossible choice.

Chad tells EJ that he wishes he could say how Johnny feels is totally out of line but he doesn’t think his open hostility is good for him or the family. Chad offers to talk to him but EJ doesn’t think it would do much good at this point. EJ thanks Chad for the offer and says he should get going since the hospital board meeting is today and he doesn’t want to give Xander a leg up. Chad decides he will go with him but first he wants to ask EJ if he had anything to do with Versavix being stolen and returned. EJ jokes that it’s becoming a habit of Chad to ruin a nice moment by accusing him of a crime. Chad says he’s not asking as a reporter but as EJ’s brother and someone who knows what he’s capable of.

Kayla informs Brady that she spoke to Hope this morning and got Bo’s latest test results which she believes is good news as not only is the infection not spreading anymore, it seems to have begun to resolve. Brady says it sounds like some kind of miracle drug. Kayla says it might be but the real test will be to see if it repairs the damage done to his organs. Brady says he will continue to pray for Bo. Brady brings up the board meeting and knows it doesn’t seem as important. Kayla acknowledges that the outcome of the vote is life and death stakes too. Brady admits he thought it was a no brainer as Victor would’ve wanted him to vote for Xander, but now he’s not so sure. Kayla feels the same way since EJ owning the hospital was a non starter for her but after what happened to Philip, she has to wonder which is the lesser of two evils. Brady says that’s his dilemma as well. Brady adds that Kristen is pushing for him to vote for EJ and normally he would never consider doing that. Brady then gets a call from Kristen, so Kayla wishes him luck and goes to see patients. Kristen informs Brady that Rachel isn’t feeling well so she was going to bring her in to the hospital to be checked out. Brady informs her that he’s already at the hospital so he will just wait. Kristen tells him that she doesn’t think it’s anything serious physically, but they have a lot to talk about.

Jada asks Belle what Shawn is up to. Belle promises he’s not in any trouble. Jada says she will need more than that. Belle explains that Shawn needed to go to Bo’s rehab facility to bring him a drug that could possibly save his life. Jada brings up knowing that Dr. Russell wouldn’t let Kayla have any of the drug and questions why Shawn wouldn’t let her know that he got a dose. Belle says she’s bound by confidentiality but guesses he didn’t want to incriminate Jada. Jada doesn’t understand then realizes the meth lab explosion. Jada questions if Shawn was involved then decides she doesn’t want to know. Jada asks if Shawn was there with John. Belle confirms that he was, but Shawn was not hurt. Jada encourages that John will get through this because he’s a fighter. Belle says that’s a fact, but he does have a long recovery in front of him no matter what. Belle adds that she’s been feeling useless, sitting around waiting for news so she thought she would get to work. Jada asks how she can help. Belle responds that she can help by nailing the bastard that attacked Philip.

Xander remains at the Pub and thinks about holding his daughter Victoria. Xander then grabs his phone and storms out of the Pub.

Jada tells Belle that she saw Philip’s condition and the look on Kate’s face when she found her son, beaten within an inch of his life. Belle calls it so frustrating with the Salem Inn being cagey about the security footage, so she hopes a judge will sign to turn it over. Jada wants evidence that Xander was there when Philip was attacked. Belle reveals that she did speak to someone who saw Xander in the town square, but the security footage is more reliable than a reluctant witness. Jada says they have means and opportunity but not the motive. Jada adds that Kate has a theory but she’s been very vague on the details. Belle might know the motive but she doesn’t want to speculate. Belle thinks the best thing that could happen is Philip waking up and telling them what happened. Jada hopes they can because it would be nice to tie up a high profile case, especially since EJ’s shooter is still out there.

EJ tells Chad that if he intended to remind him of what a pariah he’s become, he should’ve just left him on the ground. Chad points out that’s not a denial. EJ then swears on their father that he did not steal the drugs and says to get ahead of his next accusation, that he had nothing to do with attacking Philip either. EJ asks if Chad is satisfied. Chad calls it just a question. EJ is sure he had to ask, but decides they can’t fight with each other right now. EJ says they were so focused on their petty family squabbles that their company was stolen out from under them. EJ declares the lesson in the Titan takeover is that they are at their weakest when they are divided. Chad calls that pretty inspirational. EJ says they need to bring the family together. EJ says his word means next to nothing to them now but Chad’s still carries weight, so he wants Chad to bring them together. Chad asks what he needs from him. EJ needs Chad to vote for him in the hospital board meeting. EJ knows he has to be objective but argues that they both know the hospital would better in his hands than Titan’s. EJ adds that as far as their family goes, they may have lost their father’s company but by acquiring the hospital, they can start a new and better chapter. EJ declares the decision is in Chad’s hands. Chad tells EJ that he can count on him.

Maggie and Julie join Kayla at the hospital. Maggie says every vote counts so they intend to make their voices heard. Kayla asks if they went over the proposals. Julie confirms they did. Maggie wishes the men behind them weren’t so complicated. Julie asks if there’s not a third option. Kayla confirms there isn’t so Julie feels they are dancing with the devil either way. Maggie shudders to think of what the fallout will be after the votes are tallied because God only knows how EJ or Xander will retaliate against anyone who sides against them. Julie argues that Tom Horton would not stand for this. Kayla asks who said they are going to and talks about being tired of it. Kayla declares that she has a plan. Xander then arrives and says he hopes he’s not interrupting anything.

Brady joins Kristen and Rachel in a hospital room. Brady checks on Rachel, who says her stomach hurts. Rachel wants to get some water and says she hates being in the room. Kristen tells her to come back soon because Sarah will be there while Brady questions letting her go on her own. Kristen assures that she’s a big girl now. Brady asks about Kristen not thinking Rachel’s problem is physical. Kristen explains that Rachel completely broke down when she told her about John. Brady is sorry he wasn’t there. Kristen states that Rachel loves John so much so she thinks that news was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Kristen informs Brady that Rachel has been hiding something from them for months now and she thinks that’s what has been eating her up inside. Brady questions what she has been hiding. Kristen reveals that Rachel says she saw Johnny and EJ arguing on the night EJ was shot and that Johnny was pointing a gun at EJ. Brady is shocked and questions why she didn’t say something sooner. Kristen explains that Rachel didn’t want to get Johnny in trouble and has been terrified this whole time. Kristen says her sick days and nightmares all make sense now. Brady feels they have to go to the police but Kristen says no way in Hell.

Belle asks Jada if there’s been no progress on EJ’s case. Jada responds that other than Ava Vitali, they have nothing. Jada remarks that Ava is not making herself look innocent by fleeing. Belle says that Ava never stays away from Salem for long. Jada admits that she’s starting to doubt that Ava pulled the trigger. Belle agrees, noting that Ava is not sloppy. Jada calls it pretty damn scary because that means EJ’s shooter could still be in Salem and it might be someone that they know.

Brady understands that Johnny is family but if he shot EJ, they can’t just sweep that under the rug since EJ almost died. Kristen argues that if they go to the police, Rachel will have to testify and she will not put her through that. Brady insists that they would be there for her to get her through it. Kristen asks if she could get through losing them too, reminding him that they are on thin ice with child protective services and if they feel she’s in an unsafe environment, they will take her away from them.

Xander comments on the tension as Kayla asks how she can help him. Xander asks if Sarah is working because he wanted to have a word with her before the board meeting. Kayla remarks that she’s not obligated to discuss staffing with outside parties. Maggie reminds Xander that she told him to stay the hell away from Sarah. Xander doesn’t want her meddling in his life. Maggie declares that Sarah made it clear that she doesn’t want to see him right now. Maggie, Julie, and Kayla all state that Xander will have to go through them to get to Sarah. Xander remarks that he won’t be some outside party when he buys the hospital. EJ arrives with Chad and says that’s if he buys the hospital. EJ calls it an exciting day and says he looks forward to seeing them all in the board room. Xander walks away as EJ and Chad head in the opposite direction while Julie repeats that they are between a rock and a hard place. Maggie thanks Julie and Kayla for having her back. Julie says she’d say anything to wipe the smirk off Xander’s face. Kayla assures that they are Maggie’s friends and always have her back. Julie admits she held her tongue when Xander and Sarah got engaged in hopes that Xander had changed. Maggie complains about Xander harassing Sarah the last few days with incessant calls and texts. Kayla can’t imagine how sad Sarah is. Maggie confirms that Sarah is heartbroken and now they all know what she’s dealing with. Maggie says it’s not just Sarah, but the hospital. Julie asks Kayla about saying she had a plan. Kayla says it’s more of a silver lining and talks about how she was thinking about Xander and EJ having a tendency to bully them. Kayla declares that what a bully needs most is an audience and suggests taking that away from them. Kayla reveals she’s worked out with the hospital to make the board vote anonymous, so neither EJ or Xander will know who is really on their side and they don’t have to sit around waiting to see who will betray who. Julie compares it to Love Island USA. Chad returns with coffees for the ladies. Kayla questions Chad not watching EJ and Xander, asking what if they get in a fight before the meeting. Chad says he’s not worried as EJ has already staked out the conference room and Xander was in the cafeteria last he checked. Maggie hopes Xander is not near Sarah. Chad says Xander was on the phone, talking about business. Julie hopes he’s not on the phone too long because the sooner they get finished with this damn vote, the better. Kayla guesses Chad has already decided who he’s voting for. Chad confirms he has and asks if they have. Julie responds that she doesn’t think they’ll ever make peace with their vote when they have these two guys to choose from. Kayla decides it’s time to get on with the inevitable and gather the board.

Kristen tells Brady that Rachel hates getting tests done. Brady points out how happy Rachel was to see Sarah so she’ll be fine. Kristen remarks that Sarah is not her mother but admits they needed this time to get on the same page. Brady agrees but doesn’t think they are. Brady says he’s relieved that Rachel told Kristen about what she saw and isn’t carrying around the secret anymore, but says they can’t ignore it. Kristen argues that they can’t go to the cops either. Brady offers to go to Belle but Kristen says absolutely not since she’s the district attorney. Brady remembers he has to get to the board vote. Kristen makes Brady promise not to discuss this with Belle until they discuss it further. Brady says as soon as he gets back, they are going to sit down as a family because he needs to hear from Rachel on exactly what she saw. Brady then exits the room.

Belle comes across EJ at the hospital and asks what he’s doing there. EJ reminds her that the board vote is today. EJ says he was going to check in on John, but he figured that would just upset Marlena even more. EJ tells Belle that he’s so sorry, noting that he and John rarely saw eye to eye but he always respected him. EJ calls John a great man and father and wishes that he could be half the father that John is. Belle calls that the nicest thing EJ has said about her family. EJ assures that he meant every word and says he may not be the church going type, but John will be in his prayers. Brady comes over and mocks EJ praying for John after years of his family trying to destroy him. Brady remarks that Stefano is probably looking up from Hell, hoping for an explosion to finish the job that he couldn’t. EJ tells Brady that he’s out of line while Brady argues that EJ is out of line being near any one in his family. Belle tells Brady that’s enough. Brady declares that his father survived all the crap that EJ’s father threw his way and he will beat the odds agian. Brady threatens EJ coming within an inch of his father’s room until Belle shouts that’s enough. Brady questions Belle siding with EJ over her brother. Belle says she’s not siding with anyone and is just asking him not to do this here today. Brady agrees that they need to focus their energy on John. Kayla, Maggie, and Julie come back by and tell Chad that they got their votes locked in, so the only one unaccounted for is Brady, who Kayla points out is there now. Chad mentions that Xander should be up any second to see how things are shaking out. Julie declares that however it shakes out, it’s a lose-lose situation for all of them. EJ tells Brady that he never intended to intrude on his family’s pain as he knows how devastated Sami and Sydney are, noting that he spoke with Sydney about their flight being grounded and being unable to make it. Kayla comes over and says she’s sorry to interrupt but the board members have all cast their ballots and are only waiting on Brady’s. EJ assumes Brady is going to be voting for Xander. Xander then comes over and questions if EJ is resorting to trying to intimidate board members. Xander guesses EJ must not have much faith in his own proposal. Kayla then announces they have chosen to make the vote anonymous to prevent intimidation or retaliation. Kayla then asks to speak to Brady in private so they step away. Kayla asks if Brady still hasn’t decided. Brady responds that there’s a lot riding on this. Kayla then reveals to Brady that at this moment, it’s tied which means it all comes down to him and the fate of University Hospital is in Brady’s hands.

Rachel returns to Kristen and tells her that she had fun because Sarah turned all the tests in to a game. Rachel asks where Brady is. Kristen says he had to take care of something but he will be back to check on her. Kristen asks what Sarah told her. Rachel says Sarah said her stomach hurts too when she is upset. Rachel adds that she’s feeling much better now and wonders how Sarah knew her birthday. Kristen remarks that she must’ve seen it on her chart. Rachel comments that Sarah is really nice. Kristen hugs Rachel and says she deserves to be treated like a princess.

Julie and Maggie decide to head to the cafeteria as Chad says he will let them know when the vote comes in but Jada then arrives and arrests Xander for the assault of Philip Kiriakis. Jada reads Xander his rights as everyone looks on.

Belle goes to see Alex at the DiMera Enterprises office. Alex tells her that Brady told him about John and he’s so sorry. Belle thanks him and says she didn’t really want to leave the hospital but so many people wanted to see John so she thought she’d give them their chance while getting in some work because the district attorney’s job is never done. Alex questions her being there on official business. Belle responds that it’s about Philip.

Roman and Kate talk at the hospital. Roman tells Kate that Philip looks better. Kate worries about him still being unconscious. Roman encourages that Philip is young, strong, and just been through a lot so he needs time to heal. Roman thinks eating would make Kate feel better and offers to take her back to the Pub for breakfast. Kate says she would love that but there’s a few questions she’d like to ask Philip’s doctor. Roman says he’ll wait with her but Kate says he doesn’t have to. Kate tells Roman to go ahead home and get breakfast started, then she’ll meet him there. Roman says he’ll be waiting as he then exits.

EJ is at home and calls Brady, telling him that his meeting with the hospital board is today. Brady cuts him off to inform him of what happened to John. EJ says he’s sorry to hear that but brings up the magnitude of this vote with the hospital board. Brady hangs up on EJ. Kristen then walks in and asks what happened to John.

Marlena sits at John’s side in the hospital, talking about how it’s not even noon and he’s already had a dozen visitors. Marlena admits she was afraid for awhile that he wouldn’t come back, but then he did. Marlena wanted to be angry with Steve for asking him to disable the security alarm at the lab and then she wanted to be angry with John for agreeing to do it and insisting on doing it person, but then she realized that would be like being angry with the sun for shining or the ocean for splashing against the shore. Marlena declares that John is a hero to her and to Bo. Carrie Brady then arrives and says he’s a hero to all of them. Marlena breaks down crying as she hugs Carrie and says she’s so glad she’s there.

Alex tells Belle that he doesn’t have time for this as he’s swamped with Philip in the hospital and Xander out. Belle promises it won’t take much time. Belle assumes he’s aware of the whole thing with Versavix. Alex says he is now but says he didn’t find out about the stolen drug until after it was recovered. Alex adds that he shouldn’t be surprised with all the other stupid things Philip has done. Alex says he didn’t find out about the forged letter until way after the fact, but he feels he could’ve stopped his drug heist which Belle questions. Alex explains that he saw Philip at the Bistro having dinner with Kevin and then seconds later, he took off. Alex adds that the next day, he saw Kevin in the town square having a very hush hush conversation with Steve and Shawn. Alex feels he should’ve confronted Philip right away. Belle says it’s not his responsibility and thinks it was too late by that point.

Roman joins Johnny at the Brady Pub and says he hopes he hadn’t been waiting too long as he was caught up at the hospital. Johnny says he just came to check on him and asks how Philip is doing. Roman says he’s okay and adds that he tried to get Kate to come with him but she wanted to stay and talk to Philip’s doctor. Johnny mentions that Kate has been texting him updates on John which he appreciates. Johnny adds that he went to see John and it was hard to see him like that. Roman encourages that he will be okay, especially with Marlena by his side. Roman informs Johnny that he spoke to Eric and he’s on his way. Johnny says that’s great and notes that he talked to Allie but her son is sick so they can’t fly. Johnny adds that he thinks Sami and Sydney are trying to get a flight out of Italy. Roman is surprised to learn Sami is coming and says that’s great. Johnny knows Sami and John had their fair share of issues over the years, but she did name him John Roman, so she must have wanted him to take after both of them. Roman says if he did, they would be honored. Johnny calls that a big if since his mom left him a lot to live up to and he’s not sure he’s doing a very good job of it right now.

EJ informs Kristen that John was badly burned in an explosion at a meth lab on the other side of town. Kristen questions what John was doing at a meth lab. EJ says the article doesn’t say. Kristen asks how serious his injuries are. EJ is not sure but says it seems his chances aren’t very good. Kristen starts to cry for John.

Carrie tells Marlena that she wishes it was under happier circumstances. Marlena says it means so much that she came all this way. Marlena asks about Austin. Carrie says he didn’t come because they didn’t want their son Noah to miss his high school graduation. Carrie tells Marlena that there’s nowhere else she would be because if it wasn’t for her and John, she wouldn’t have the life she has today.

Abe and Paulina join Kate at the hospital. Paulina says they heard about John and came right away. Kate says he’s had a parade of visitors all day. Abe asks her how Philip is doing. Kate says there is unfortunately no change. Paulina says she’s praying for him and has been in close contact with Jada. Paulina can’t believe they released Xander due to lack of evidence. Abe says they all feel bad for what happened to Philip, but he can’t establish a motive, means, or opportunity for Xander so without those, they can’t make a case. Paulina assures that Belle is determined to get justice served for Philip.

Alex doesn’t understand what the hell Philip was thinking by trying to steal the drug. Belle thinks Philip was trying to get back in Xander’s good graces so he knew he had to do something huge. Belle explains that Philip was worried that EJ was going to get the green light to buy the hospital before Xander even got to make his pitch. Alex argues that Xander never ended up leaving town and had a meeting the same time as EJ and Philip knew that, so it doesn’t make any sense. Alex says that Philip knew they had a great chance of acquiring the hospital and the patent for Versavix. Belle points out that Philip wanted the drug itself for Bo and then would’ve scored points with Xander by being able to reverse engineer the drug and then even if they didn’t get the hospital, they could still make billions. Belle doesn’t deny that what Philip did was wrong but his intentions were good as he was trying to make amends with one brother while saving another one’s life. Alex says he’s definitely glad that Bo got the drug but he’s really sorry that John got hurt in the process.

Kristen tells EJ that she didn’t mean to lose it like that. EJ understands she and John have quite the history. Kristen calls John the first man that she truly loved. EJ acknowledges that she was willing to do anything to keep John including passing EJ off as her child. Kristen says she was obviously not in the right mind and was blinded by her feelings for John. EJ calls it creepy that Kristen transferred those feelings to John’s son. Kristen then brings up how EJ is sleeping with his ex-wife’s sister again and how he was once with Kate and then with her daughter Billie. EJ says point taken as Kristen admits the DiMeras are twisted in their own way. EJ says at least they come by it honestly as they all saw Stefano would stop at nothing to win his original obsession, Marlena Evans.

Carrie tells Marlena that she spent the whole flight thinking about John and all the times they had together. Carrie recalls everything changing for her and John when they almost lost Marlena as she flashes back to that time. Carrie talks about how John didn’t hesitate to take care of her and everyone talks about John as a legendary super spy but he’s best at being a dad to her, Sami, Eric, Belle, Paul, and Brady. They agree that John has a soft spot for his girls. Carrie acknowledges that John loved Sami like his own, just like he loved her. Carrie talks about always feeling safe in John’s arms. Carrie says she’s beyond lucky to get two good dads.

Roman questions Johnny not thinking he’s living up to he and John’s example. Johnny brings up the adoption and how he blindsided Chanel, crushing her dream of becoming a mom just because he couldn’t handle what his own dad did. Roman encourages that he is handling it and points out that he was blindsided as well which he blames himself for. Roman says no one is blaming Johnny for taking time to process it, so he shouldn’t blame himself. Johnny just hates that he hurt Chanel again. Roman points out that they are back together now. Johnny swears to never let Chanel down again. Roman says that sounds like he’s trying to live up to his name to him. Johnny says Chanel would love if he brought her a coffee, so he goes to get one to go. As Johnny goes behind the bar, he notices the lockbox is missing and asks Roman what happened to it.

Belle tells Alex that she doesn’t blame Philip for Asher Leeds starting the fire. Belle says Asher owned the meth lab and she used to be his lawyer. Belle adds that she would love to blame Asher for what happened to John but he was just a kid in to drugs and now he’s dead. Belle hates what happened but it was a tragic accident. Alex calls that very generous of her. Belle guesses she just needs to focus on the task at hand and that is bringing whoever brutally assaulted Philip to justice. Alex asks if the police need to arrest that person first. Belle responds that she knows things that the police don’t about motives of the person who wanted Philip dead and she thinks Alex does too. Belle then asks Alex if he thinks Xander is guilty. Alex pleads the fifth.

Paulina goes to get a coffee while Abe stays with Kate. Abe tells Kate that he knows she’s convinced that Xander assaulted Philip, but he questions why Xander would try to kill his own brother. Kate says maybe because Xander is a vicious thug who doesn’t want to share his fortune or his title with his brother. Abe points out that they did share it for months, so he questions what Kate isn’t telling him.

Carrie tells Marlena that she’s been so lucky to have so many people looking out for her in her childhood. Marlena remembers when she first met her when she was five years old. Carrie can’t imagine the trouble she must have caused for her. Marlena says there was that, but she brought so much joy in to their lives. Marlena knows Carrie is Roman and Anna’s daughter, but really she was her daughter. Marlena calls Carrie her and John’s daughter as well. Carrie thanks her for always treating her that way. Marlena says it doesn’t matter what’s on a piece of paper or what comes back from a test as she declares that family is who sits in your heart and makes life worthwhile. Marlena tells Carrie that she will always be their daughter as they embrace.

Kristen doesn’t know how she’s going to tell Rachel about John. EJ is sure she’ll be devastated. Kristen says there is something EJ could do to help soften the blow, if she could give Rachel some good news about her Grandmother. EJ says they could all use some good news and remarks that he knows he’ll be much happier when the hospital accepts his bid. Kristen questions EJ letting Rachel go on suffering and asks if he doesn’t care about her at all. EJ says his heart goes out to John’s family and he hopes he makes a full recovery. Kristen doesn’t believe that and brings up how EJ tried to kill John more than once. EJ responds that he’s not that man anymore. EJ understands in a way he never did before how much John means to his family, noting that he’s a husband, father, and grandfather including being Johnny’s Grandfather. EJ states that Johnny has endured so much pain lately because of him and now he could potentially be facing another loss. EJ wishes he could be there for Johnny and says he would do anything to help him through this.

Roman informs Johnny that he moved the lockbox because he didn’t want people asking questions about it because the gun that was in the lockbox disappeared the night that EJ was shot. Johnny asks if he has any idea who took it. Roman says he’s not sure but he does remember mentioning it to Johnny that night. Johnny questions if Roman is asking if he shot his father. Roman says he didn’t ask that. Johnny says he’ll answer him anyway and says no. Johnny then decides he has to go and rushes out without getting his coffee for Chanel.

Abe tells Kate that they are old friends and he can see this is weighing on her, so he wants to help. Abe asks Kate to tell him what she knows about what happened to Philip. Kate spots Philip’s doctor and says they’ll have to finish this later and walks away as Paulina returns and asks what she just interrupted. Abe wishes he knew.

Belle tells Alex that he’s not on trial here. Alex feels he may as well be. Belle says she’s building a case and the police are going to question him, so anything they learn, they will pass on to her office. Belle says if Alex knows anything, he may as well just tell her now. Alex responds that this might mean absolutely nothing, but yesterday he was having breakfast in the town square with Stephanie and he saw Xander coming from the direction of the Salem Inn. Belle asks how he seemed. Alex says distracted and tense as he said they hit a snag with the hospital deal and got out of there quick. Alex adds that later on, they found out about Philip being attacked in his Salem Inn room and he realized it was about the same time that they saw Xander. Belle questions why he didn’t say anything. Alex responds that Xander is his cousin and that’s family. Alex adds that Xander gave him his job and after the secret he kept from him, he felt he owed it to Xander. Belle asks what about his other cousin who hasn’t regained consciousness and what he owes him. Alex argues that they don’t know that Xander attacked him and calls him innocent until proven guilty. Alex adds that if Xander did do this, he doesn’t know how he could keep working for him. Alex questions if Xander would even own Titan-DiMera still if he goes down for this and asks what happened to the company if Philip doesn’t wake up. Belle says the company is not her concern but Alex says it is his, Brady’s and the people that work for them. Belle admits she gets that there’s a lot at stake. Alex says that includes ownership of the hospital. Alex says the board meeting is today that Xander was supposed to attend and he doesn’t know where he is or if he plans to show up. Belle asks Alex to have Xander call her if he does see him. Belle says she will be in touch and exits the office.

Kristen brings Rachel in to the living room of the DiMera Mansion. Rachel questions why she didn’t want her to go to school today. Kristen says she wanted to talk to her about her Grandpa John. Rachel excitedly asks if he’s home since she hasn’t seen him in so long. Kristen knows how much she’s missed him and he is home, but he had an accident. Rachel asks what kind of accident. Kristen explains that he was badly burned in a fire but he is in the hospital where the doctors are taking excellent care of him. Kristen knows this is hard to hear which is why she wanted them to spend the day together. Kristen asks if Rachel wants to talk about anything. Rachel responds that she doesn’t feel good and her stomach hurts. Kristen wonders if she’s upset because her friends couldn’t come to her birthday party. Rachel admits that may be the case.

Carrie tells Marlena that she was just hitting puberty when they thought they lost her. Marlena notes that was not a good time to not have a mother figure. Carrie recalls John stepping up and being the one who took her shopping for her first prom dress, teaching her how to drive, and going out for ice cream. Carrie states that John went out of his way to make her feel special even though he was going through so much heartache, he would always make her smile. Carrie flashes back to decorating the Christmas tree as a kid with John. Carrie says their world was shattered but John made sure they had a Merry Christmas. Carrie laughs about how she would tell all her school friends that her dad was Superman and says he still is. John’s hand then moves as Carrie holds his hand which excites her and Marlena. Abe enters the room and is surprised to see Carrie as they hug. Abe wishes they could have the homecoming ceremony that John deserves. Marlena thinks the best medicine would be a little bit of time wit Abe and tells him to go ahead. Marlena and Carrie then exit to allow Abe to sit at John’s side. Abe jokes that this is what John gets for being so good at saving lives. Abe brings up that there was a line out the door of people who wanted to see him which says how much he means to them. Abe says that means John has to stick around. Abe adds that there is one person who tops them all and he knows, because he was there from the beginning when John got to Salem and he saw the whole love story unfold. Abe flashes back to being with John when he and Marlena were first getting engaged. Abe declares that they were right that it will last forever and says he’s so honored to have stood up for him. Abe hopes that his son will marry John’s granddaughter and that they will stand up for them together because they are family and always will be.

Marlena goes over to Paulina at the hospital and introduces her to Carrie. Carrie then goes to get coffee while Paulina suggests Marlena go home to get some rest while they will take turns sitting with John. Marlena says that’s kind of her but she’s not going anywhere and is staying right here. Marlena then heads back to John’s room.

Belle walks through the town square and runs in to Johnny, who apologizes and says his head is somewhere else. Belle calls it a rough day for everybody. Johnny says he’s really sorry about John. Belle talks about it being months since she had seen or talked to John, but she’s grateful that the last thing she said to him was that she loved him. Belle remarks that you don’t want to be in a situation where your father could be dying and you don’t want to leave anything unsaid. Johnny sees what she’s trying to do and says it’s not going to work, noting that Chad gave him the exact same speech. Johnny says he went to see EJ when he was on his deathbed and said everything he needed to say. Johnny declares that he never wants to see that evil son of a bitch again and warns Belle that if she knows what’s good for her, she’ll stay away too. Johnny then walks off.

Kristen gets Rachel a glass of water and says she knows it’s been really hard for her. Kristen brings up Rachel having a bad dream after her birthday party. Rachel says she heard a gunshot and she thinks it happened in real life.

Belle goes to the hospital and greets Carrie. Belle asks if there’s any change in John. Carrie says he squeezed her hand and Kayla said her vitals are improving, so he’s going to pull through.

Marlena sits at John’s side and dreams of John coming back to her. Marlena tells John to never leave her again.

Johnny runs in to EJ in the town square. As Johnny starts to walk away, EJ tries to follow with his cane but falls down. Johnny starts to run up to check on him, but stops and turns away.

Kate meets with Roman at the Pub and tells him that Philip’s doctor hopes he will regain consciousness soon. Kate asks Roman what’s wrong. Roman informs her that Johnny was just there and noticed the lockbox was gone, so he admitted that he moved it because he thought Johnny might have taken the gun. Kate thought he wasn’t going to confront Johnny about it. Roman says he wasn’t until he realized he can’t protect him if he doesn’t know. Roman tells Kate that Johnny said he didn’t do it, but he’s not sure he believes him.

Kristen questions Rachel thinking she heard a gunshot in real life and asks if she remembers anything else. Rachel recalls the night EJ was shot and says she woke up because she heard yelling, so she snuck downstairs to see what was going on and Johnny was there, fighting with EJ, and he had a gun.

Leo and Javi eat together in the town square. Javi says he’s sorry they had to stay at the Salem Inn last night as he couldn’t face Gabi after their huge fight last night. Leo says he doesn’t mind staying at his old home of the Salem Inn and he’s all for more one on one time with him. Javi says it won’t last much longer with him out of work so he’ll have to get out there and look for another job but he doesn’t know where to start. Leo suggests Javi go after his dream job and go back to being a firefighter paramedic.

JJ joins Gabi at her home as she continues to panic about Arianna not being home. Gabi wants to go out and look further. JJ encourages her to take a break as she’s been on her feet for hours and hasn’t slept. Gabi questions how she is supposed to sleep when her daughter has been gone all night and isn’t answering her messages. JJ says she probably turned her phone off. Gabi complains about JJ not being able to trace her phone. Gabi apologizes and cries that it’s just her daughter. Gabi acknowledges that JJ has been really helpful and thanks him. Gabi admits that JJ has gone above and beyond in looking for Arianna all night, so she can’t tell him how much she appreciates that, especially since they haven’t been on the best terms lately. JJ calls that water under the bridge and says right now, Arianna is the priority. JJ assures that it’s only a matter of time before they find her. Gabi complains that they’ve searched everywhere and called all her old friends, so she questions where the hell she could be.

Arianna and Doug III lay in bed together at the Salem Inn. Arianna says last night was amazing and she’s so glad they ran in to each other. Doug III says he doesn’t normally hit it off with total strangers but she’s so easy to talk to. Arianna wishes she could stay but says she should probably get home. Doug III asks if she’s sure as he was hoping they could keep it going. Arianna agrees to stay a little longer as they continue kissing.

Melinda Trask meets with Sophia at the Brady Pub. Melinda apologizes for the casual setting she doesn’t usually meet potential clients in but she’s still searching for a new office. Sophia says she doesn’t mind so Melinda asks what she can do for her. Sophia says she’s due to give birth in a few weeks and is planning to give the baby up for adoption. Melinda says she’s come to the right place as she’s exceedingly well versed in the adoption process. Sophia explains that her mom initially wanted them to go with the perfect couple but they pulled out. Sophia says that she and the baby’s father are not ready to be parents yet. Melinda asks if the baby’s father will be joining them today.

Tate comes out of his room to announce he’s finally beat the flu but he sees nobody is home and wonders where everyone went.

Johnny and Chanel lay on the couch together, talking about christening their new apartment as they kiss. Chanel can’t believe Paulina gave them the place for only a dollar. Johnny calls it incredibly generous. Chanel says now all they have to do is focus on filling it up. Johnny thought they agreed to wait a minute but Chanel clarifies that she meant buying furniture. Johnny admits he thought she was talking about starting a family. Chanel assures that she understands he needs time and with his new job starting at Titan-DiMera, she knows he will be pretty busy for awhile. Johnny says that reminds him that he needs to check and confirm an HR thing. Johnny checks his phone but finds he has a ton of new messages from his family. Chanel asks if something is wrong. Johnny reveals it’s about his Grandpa John.

Javi doesn’t know if he can go back to being a firefighter paramedic as he left all that being in Corpus Christi and came to Salem to start over. Leo reminds Javi that he was just saying he regretted quitting and that he shouldn’t have let the homophobic captain bully him in to it. Leo says now it would be different and he has him to back him up. Javi jokes about Leo just trying to get him back in the firefighter outfit. Leo brings up seeing Javi in action when Sarah had her allergic reaction and says he has a talent for saving lives that he shouldn’t let go to waste. Javi promises to at least think about it. Javi suggests for now they head back to the Salem Inn as they still have a couple hours before checkout.

Johnny finishes a call with Sami and informs Chanel that John was injured in an explosion as he was trying to get a drug that might help Bo. Johnny adds that Sami and Sydney were trying to get a flight out of Italy but there was a volcano that caused the flights to be grounded. Chanel guesses John must be in pretty bad condition if they were trying to rush back home. Johnny confirms it doesn’t look good. Chanel encourages that John is the strongest man they know and he is going to pull through this. Johnny remarks that he thought the same thing about Stefano, but you can’t live forever.

Tate calls Brady and says he’s feeling a lot better but asks where he is and where John is since he saw all the decorations. Tate is shocked when Brady informs him of the news. Tate says he’ll be right there and hangs up.

Sophia tells Melinda that Tate is getting over the flu but said he may join them later if he’s feeling better. Sophia assures that Tate is on board with the adoption. Melinda asks about her mother. Sophia asks if it matters since she just turned 18 and legally can make the decision without her. Melinda states that the decision will go a lot more smoothly if they are all on the same page. Sophia promises that her mother won’t be a problem. Her mother Amy then enters the Pub and says she thought Sophia was in school, so she questions what is going on here.

Gabi asks JJ what she’s going to tell Will and Sonny since she already lost her daughter. JJ assures that after they eat, they will head back out and search more. Gabi asks JJ to be real with her as a cop and questions if a teenager sneaking out of the house means they are just innocently hanging out at the mall. JJ says in some cases yes, but in other cases, drug and alcohol tend to be involved. JJ adds that there is another possibility that she won’t like and that’s that she may have gone out to meet a boy.

Arianna tells Doug III that she doesn’t want to seem pushy but she was wondering if he’d like to do this again sometime. Doug III says he’d love to but it may be tricky since the Salem Inn is pricy and he’s a little strapped for cash. Arianna says that’s no problem as she will help pay but Doug III says he will not let her do that. Arianna suggests they can meet at his place then but Doug III says that’s not a good idea either since his boss doubles as his landlord and he just moved in, so he’d feel a little weird about having girls over so soon. Arianna says she can be stealthy. Doug III then reveals he lives at the Brady Pub which Arianna notes is one of her family’s favorite places. Doug III finds that to be true of most families in Salem so Arianna agrees that Brady Pub is off the table. Arianna is glad it’s just a logistical problem and not a him having a secret girlfriend problem. Doug III assures that he does not have a girlfriend.

Sophia introduces Amy to Melinda Trask. Amy recognizes her as the former district attorney and says her reputation precedes her but not in a good way as she questions what Sophia is doing here with her. Sophia admits that she’s hiring Melinda to help put her baby up for adoption, but Amy says like hell she is.

Javi and Leo go to the Salem Inn. Javi wonders if Gabi even noticed he didn’t come home last night. They agree that they probably spent the whole night catching up. As they head to their room, Arianna comes out from Doug III’s room and tells him that she knows it’s complicated but she hopes they can arrange another meet up soon. Doug III assures he definitely wants to make this happen again as they kiss.

Tate runs in to Johnny and Chanel in the town square. Tate says he heard about John. Chanel says they did too and are heading to the hospital now. Tate says he just came from there and it’s not looking good as John is covered in bandages. Tate says he tried to tell John that he loved him and just hopes that he heard him. Tate says he woke up this morning so excited to hear about all of John’s adventures and he wanted to tell John about the baseball games he missed and about the baby. Chanel encourages that John will pull through this.

Gabi asks JJ how Arianna could be out with a boy when she doesn’t know anyone in town. JJ suggests she could’ve met someone on a plane or online if she used a dating app. Gabi argues that she’s too young for that as she just turned 18 yesterday. Gabi declares that her daughter is not the type to sneak out in the middle of the night to meet a boy, but admits she’s always been a little boy crazy. Gabi complains that there must be another explanation for this.

Arianna and Doug III come out from the Salem Inn but pull behind the bushes when Arianna sees Tate and Johnny, noting that her cousin and uncle cannot see her. Doug III agrees and tells Arianna to call him as he walks away the opposite way. Arianna remains hidden as Tate apologizes to Johnny and Chanel for getting emotional. Johnny assures they are there for him. Tate says he should let them go see John. Chanel invites Tate to come back with them but Tate says he has to go meet Sophia about a lawyer that helps with the adoption. Chanel asks if they found another family. Tate says not yet but they hope the lawyer can help them find another family. Chanel wishes him luck while Johnny says he hopes everything works out for them. Tate thanks them and says he hopes everything works out for them too.

Melinda decides she will get going since this is obviously a family matter. Sophia pleads with her not to go as she needs her. Melinda says she knows how messy these things can get and it won’t help anyone for her to be in the middle of it. Sophia pleads with Melinda to give her a few seconds so she agrees. Sophia turns to Amy and apologizes for not telling her about the adoption because she was scared how she would react. Sophia understands her opinion and where she’s coming from but says this is her life and she has to do what’s best for her. Amy questions what’s best being to give her child away to complete strangers. Sophia thinks what’s best is to let her child grow up with kind and loving parents who will raise them better than she or Tate ever could. Sophia reminds Amy that she seemed okay with it when Johnny and Chanel were going to adopt the baby. Amy points out how that turned out. Sophia argues that doesn’t mean they can’t find another couple who are just as great and that’s what they intend to do with or without her approval. Amy argues that she can’t do this. Sophia says she can’t stop them but Amy says she refuses to let this happen. Melinda then declares that Sophia is right that Amy has no choice and warns her to accept that or she will lose her grandchild and her daughter as well.

Arianna sits in the town square and checks her phone, commenting that her mom is insane. Gabi then rushes up and hugs her, saying she was worried sick. Arianna says she’s fine. Gabi questions where the hell she was last night and this morning. Gabi complains about Arianna sneaking out of the house on her first night back in town. JJ suggests giving her a chance to explain. Gabi declares that Arianna is going to explain how she sent 47 unread text messages to her daughter who is practically glued to her phone. Arianna tells Gabi to calm down and claims she was at her friend Cora’s place last night. Gabi says she has no idea who that is. Arianna remarks that she probably wasn’t paying attention. Gabi tells her that she doesn’t get to cop an attitude after the stunt she pulled. Gabi adds that she knows for a fact that Will and Sonny would never allow her to spend the night at someone’s house without letting them know about it. Arianna declares that she’s 18 now and can do what she wants. Arianna asks JJ to tell Gabi that she is legally allowed to and that Gabi is blowing this out of proportion. Gabi asks JJ to tell Arianna that she is not overreacting. Gabi shouts that what Arianna did last night was completely unacceptable. JJ interrupts and says he’d love to help but he knows better than to get in between a fight between a mother and daughter, so the issue is going to have to stay between them.

Amy questions Melinda telling her how to handle her family and asks who she thinks she is. Melinda responds that she can understand where both of them are coming from. Melinda reveals that she also got pregnant at 17 and her dad was furious and wanted to kick her out of the house for shaming their family, but her mother stepped up to raise her child as her own. Sophia asks if her and her child grew up like siblings. Melinda explains that living in China, they still had a one child policy so her daughter stayed with her parents while she moved to the States. Sophia says that must have been really hard for her. Melinda calls it one of the hardest and most painful things she’s ever had to do. Amy asks if she wishes she kept her baby. Melinda says Haley was in her 20s when she finally told her the truth and she felt completely betrayed but eventually they made amends and then she died shortly after. Melinda says there isn’t a day that goes by that she doesn’t wish she had more time with her, but she also knows that giving her up was the right thing to do as she was 17 and not ready to be a mother. Melinda says her parents did a great job with Haley and thanks to them, her daughter grew up to be a kind, smart, compassionate and accomplished young woman. Melinda knows it’s a tough decision but if Sophia has made up her mind then the law is on her side. Melinda repeats to Amy to not lose her daughter over this. Melinda says she misses her own daughter every second of every day so she shouldn’t take what she has for granted.

Gabi tells Arianna that this is completely disrespectful and declares that if Arianna is going to live under her roof, she will follow her rules. Javi approaches and greets Arianna, who tells him that Gabi has gone full psycho mode again. Javi tells Arianna that he’s sorry for missing her birthday and offers to take her to dinner to make up for it. Arianna tells him not to worry as she knows he had a good reason to miss it. Gabi tells Javi that she tried to invite him but he wouldn’t pick up and she wanted to apologize. Javi responds that he didn’t want to hear it because he just wanted to end this cycle of abuse and he couldn’t take it anymore. Javi argues that Gabi apologizes and then just does it all over again. Javi declares that he can’t take it anymore from family that claims to care about him. Gabi admits that she’s been awful and she’s really sorry as she never should’ve fired him. Gabi says when she thought he left Arianna at the airport, she obviously overreacted. Javi admits that he loves Gabi but they both know their relationship won’t survive him working for her. Gabi asks about living together since she noticed he and Leo didn’t come home last night. Javi says he just needed some space, but they’ll be back tonight and see where they go from there. Gabi asks if they are okay then. Javi says they are getting there. Javi tells Arianna that he’ll get back to her about taking her to dinner. Arianna suggests having brunch now but Gabi stops her and says they still have a lot to talk about as Javi walks away. JJ gets a call from the police station and steps away to answer. Arianna apologizes to Gabi for not telling her where she was, claiming she forgot and it was stupid. Gabi questions if she was really at a friend’s house. Arianna says yes and that she wouldn’t lie about that. Gabi asks even if she really had spent the night with a boy.

Doug III goes to see Leo at the Hernandez home and hoped that Leo could help him track down who Melinda sold Julie’s necklace to. Leo asks why not just ask Melinda. Doug III says she’s not answering his calls. He adds that Holly suggested he get a private investigator but he feels like he’ll need someone more like Leo, who knows how to deal with people on the other side of the law.

Arianna tells Gabi that she wasn’t with a boy. Gabi questions why she turned off her phone then. Arianna claims she didn’t notice her phone died. Gabi doesn’t believe her, arguing that she’s on her phone every five seconds. Arianna questions why she’s being so suspicious of her when she didn’t used to be like this. Gabi argues that Arianna didn’t used to be like this either and says she can tell she isn’t being honest with her. JJ then comes back and announces that he just found something out that Arianna should know about her great-grandpa John.

Johnny and Chanel return home. Johnny states that Tate was right as he barely recognized John after seeing him hooked up to all those machines. Chanel encourages that he’s stable and just needs time to heal. Johnny agrees and apologizes as he should be more positive, like John would be. Johnny says he’s part of the reason he wanted John to be the middle name of their child when they still planned to adopt Tate and Sophia’s baby. Chanel thinks they still can use that when they are ready to start a family as she can’t think of a better name than John for one of their future sons. Chanel says John is a man everyone loves and also after Johnny, who she loves as she hugs him.

Amy thanks Melinda for sharing her deeply personal story and for giving them her take on the situation. Amy tells Sophia that she loves her and wants what’s best for her. Amy then gets a text from work and says she has to put out a fire. Amy knows it’s terrible timing and tells Sophia they will finish this tonight at home. Amy promises they will talk and hugs her as she then exits the Pub. Sophia thanks Melinda for trying to help. Melinda says she’s been where she is, so she knows what she’s going through and she empathizes. Sophia asks if that means she’ll agree to be her lawyer. Melinda laughs and says she doesn’t know about that. Tate then enters the Pub and questions her, saying absolutely not to Melinda being their lawyer. Sophia tells him that Melinda has been great so far and asks what the problem is. Tate responds that Melinda is the problem and she knows why. Sophia says she knew about Holly’s brother being stolen but she had no idea about Melinda being involved. Tate says she was and it caused a lot of heartache for their families. Melinda admits she got too involved with her client who was also her friend and she regrets that but she thinks it demonstrates the lengths she would go to for her clients. Tate remarks that’s no matter how many lives she destroys in the process. Melinda tells Sophia that she sees some of herself in her and she knows what she’s going through. Melinda adds that if Sophia and her mom can agree on what she wants to do, she can give her a call. Melinda then exits the Pub.

Leo tells Doug III that he will do whatever he can to help him track down the necklace. Doug III thanks him and wishes he could pay him. Leo tells him not to worry as he considers him a friend. Doug III then exits as Javi comes home. Javi asks what he wanted. Leo says it was just necklace drama and asks how it went with Gabi. Javi says they sort of came to an understanding but more importantly, he’s decided to apply to the Salem fire department. Leo hugs him and tells him that’s great news and he won’t regret it.

Arianna asks if John will be okay. JJ says it’s hard to say as he understands his condition is pretty serious. Arianna says she needs to see him, so Gabi says she will go with her. Gabi thanks JJ for all his help as she’s not sure she could’ve gotten through the last 12 hours without him. JJ says anytime and adds that he’ll be praying for John. Gabi and Arianna then walk away to head for the hospital.

Johnny tells Chanel that she didn’t have to take the whole day off work just to be there with him. Chanel says she wasn’t about to leave him alone. Johnny says she might not have much say in that soon since Titan-DiMera might take issue with her hanging around the office all day. Chanel asks if he’s sure he wants to work with Xander even if he’s the one who attacked Philip. Johnny points out that the police let him go and he could use the income. Johnny adds that if they are going to have kids, he doesn’t want to be relying on DiMera money to support his family. Chanel gets excited by the idea of kids. Johnny thanks her for being with him today and says he loves her so much as they kiss.

Xander enters the living room of the Kiriakis Mansion where Maggie questions what he’s doing, sneaking around her house at this hour.

At the hospital, Sarah is looking at a photo of her and Xander. Brady, Paul, and Belle arrive to ask Sarah if there’s any news about John.

Marlena sits with John and says he’s been through so much in his life and she knows he’s exhausted. Marlena pleads for him not to leave them now. Steve enters the room and tells Marlena that Stefano may have called himself the Phoenix, but he had nothing on John Black. John’s mind goes in to a series of flashbacks to when he first arrived in Salem. John then manages to tell Marlena that he loves her before he then flatlines. Kayla calls for help and tells Marlena that she has to step out. Steve holds Marlena and says he’s got her as they watch on in worry. Marlena calls out to John that she’s there and she loves him too. Kayla urges John to fight as she and the nurses work to revive him. Marlena argues that John can’t die like this while Steve insists that John will make it, bringing up how many times he’s cheated death and come back to Marlena. Marlena pleads for John to come back to her. Kayla finds a pulse and declares that John is back as the monitors go back to normal, relieving Marlena and Steve. Marlena sits back with John and holds his hand as Kayla confirms he is stable. Marlena asks if she thinks this will happen again. Kayla says all she can tell her is that they will do everything they can for him. Marlena thanks Kayla and Steve. Steve tells John to hang in there as he has a lot left to do.

Xander questions Maggie saying it’s her house when last he checked, Victor left half the place to him. Maggie asks if he really thinks Victor would want him there after what he did to Philip. Xander tells Maggie that he won’t fight her for this dump so Maggie tells him to leave. Xander responds that he will fight for his daughter and declares he will be a part of her life. Maggie tells Xander that if Sarah decides she doesn’t want him seeing Victoria, she will do everything in her power to protect her granddaughter. Xander asks if that’s a threat. Maggie wants to remind him of who she is. Maggie says she managed to keep Victor in check whenever he stepped out of line and she won’t hesitate to do the same to Xander.

Sarah checks John’s chart and informs Brady, Belle, and Paul that he’s in trauma room 1 and that Kayla is overseeing his case personally, so she should be out with an update. Paul asks if Sarah hasn’t seen him. Sarah says she just came in to cover a shift so she didn’t even know John had been rescued and asks what happened. Paul explains that as they were on their way back, John got a call and jumped on another case. Sarah questions John jumping on another case after everything he had been through. Brady says that’s their dad as instead of coming home to his family, he put his life on the line again. Sarah says she’s so sorry and can’t imagine what they are going through. Sarah agrees to see what she can find out. Marlena then comes out from John’s room and announces that he is alive. Brady hugs Marlena as she cries.

Kayla and Steve sit with John. Kayla asks Steve if he was able to get the drug to Bo. Steve confirms that before they left to go to the lab, Jeffrey agreed to let Shawn take a single dose for Bo without going through the FDA. Steve says that when John recovered it, Hope and Shawn took it directly to Bo’s rehab facility. Kayla prays that it works. Steve guesses time will tell but says one thing’s for sure and that’s that if Bo survives, they all have John to thank.

Xander remarks that it’s been awhile since he’s seen this side of Maggie. Maggie admits it’s not one she brings out often but warns that he’s not the only member of the family capable of rage. Maggie says like most decent people, she doesn’t let her rage lead her to do unspeakable things. Xander brings up when Philip faked his death and framed Brady for murder. Maggie says she won’t defend that but they both know he wasn’t in his right mind. Xander says to spare him the defense and argues that’s always the excuse for Philip, while he gets no grace. Maggie asks if he’s going to claim that she never showed him grace. Maggie asks how many times she excused his behavior and fought for he and Sarah or given him the benefit of the doubt. Maggie knew how damaged his was by how Victor treated him, but declares that’s over and he’s run out of do-overs. Xander questions it being that easy for her to turn her back on him because of what she thinks he did to Philip. Maggie says it’s because of what he did to Sarah. Xander questions what he ever did to Sarah other than love her. Maggie argues that he broke the promise that he made to them that he had changed and that he would never do anything to bring danger to Victoria. Maggie complains that he made fools out of both of them and for that, she will never forgive him.

Sarah walks away as Marlena sits with Belle, Brady, and Paul. Marlena cries that she needs to find a place a little less public, so Belle suggests they all go to the chapel together. Marlena says to give her a few minutes and then she would love for them to join her there. Brady agrees that they will give her space as she heads to the chapel. Kayla comes over to Sarah and asks if she’s alright. Sarah says not really, so Kayla asks if she wants to talk about it. Sarah informs her that she and Xander got in to a huge fight and she kicked him out of the house. Sarah says she’s in shock still after what happened to Philip. Kayla says she’s here if she needs anything. Sarah feels she’s the one who should be comforting her as she just heard about John and asks how he’s doing. Kayla admits it was really bad as he had third degree burns and then went in to cardiac arrest. Kayla cries that John risked it all to save Bo’s life and admits now she is really scared as Sarah hugs her. Sarah brings a coffee to Brady and tells him they are all praying for John. Brady asks how Philip is doing. Sarah says they are hopeful that he will wake up as his injuries are pretty severe but his neurological tests all came back normal. Brady says that’s good. Brady brings up how the other day he got a text from Philip about meeting for lunch about connecting Titan and Basic Black, but he really wanted information on why Xander wanted to buy the hospital. Brady found it strange since the co-CEO wanted intel from someone who wasn’t really aware of the day to day happenings at Titan. Brady says it was obvious something pretty heavy was going on between them which he found strange because he thought Philip and Xander were getting along. Sarah responds that they were. Brady says that’s why he wanted to know what went wrong, pointing out that he knows better than anyone what happens when Xander sees red since he wanted to bash his head in with a baseball bat when he thought he was responsible for Sarah’s accident. Brady then asks Sarah if she thinks Xander was responsible for what happened to Philip.

Xander questions Maggie talking about him breaking promises and Sarah’s heart as he asks what about Sarah did to him and his heart. Maggie argues that Sarah did nothing but love him. Xander brings up that Sarah knew about Philip’s letter being a forgery, allowing him to steal half of his inheritance and let him go on to build a relationship with him, knowing he was a fraud. Xander then realizes that Maggie knew too. Maggie says she did not at first but admits that Sarah told her and reveals that she supported her decision not to tell Xander. Xander calls it unbelievable that she judges him when she and Sarah lied to his face for months. Maggie shouts that Sarah was trying to protect him from himself because she was afraid of what he would do to Philip if he found out and he’s proven hear fears not unfounded. Xander asks who said he did anything to Philip. Maggie tells him not to play coy with her. Xander points out that the police didn’t charge him with a crime because they have absolutely nothing to hold him on. Maggie argues that when Philip wakes up, he will tell them exactly what Xander did to him. Xander says that’s if he comes to. Maggie remarks that she hates the idea of her granddaughter growing up without a father, but it’s clear now that it’s better if she grows up without one like him. Xander asks how she can say that when she knows the kind of father he is. Victoria wakes up crying but Maggie tells Xander not to think about it as he’s not seeing Victoria tonight and she will have the staff bring his belongings to his old apartment. Maggie declares that Xander is never to step foot in the Kiriakis Mansion again as she storms out.

Kayla finishes a call and informs Paul and Belle that they are ready to move John to his new room in the hospital. Paul takes that as a good sign while Kayla notes that the next few hours are critical. Belle doesn’t understand how John ended up in a meth lab and almost died. Steve comes over and says it was because of him. Kayla tells Steve it was not his fault. Steve says he called John to ask for his help as he just wanted to pick his brain but John insisted on showing up. Paul knows John would’ve never forgiven him for leaving him out with Bo’s life on the line. Steve acknowledges that Bo has a fighting chance thanks to John. Belle asks if the dose is going to work for Bo. Kayla admits she doesn’t know. Belle states that Bo and John could both die. Steve says that John saved every bit of the drug by throwing his body on top of it. Kayla adds that now thanks to John, hundreds of thousands of people could be saved with the drug all around the world. Kayla declares that John is and always will be a hero. Sarah sits with Brady as he tells her that he’s not asking her to rat out her husband if she knows something about Philip’s assault. Sarah responds that she’s not ready to talk about it yet. Brady says he understands. Sarah mentions she will check on Philip before her shift ends but if Brady or his family need anything, she’s just a phone call away. Brady says he appreciates that as Sarah walks away.

Marlena prays in the Chapel, saying she feels like they’ve been asking for a lot lately. Marlena says she’s deeply grateful that John is back, but she’s here now to ask for a miracle. Marlena says that John risked his life to save Bo and he’s risked his life for her more times than she can count. Marlena calls John more than a hero to her as he didn’t just save her life, but her soul as she flashes back to when she was possessed by the Devil. Marlena states that she and John have survived Stefano, Orpheus, Kristen, and even the Devil himself. Marlena calls John the best man she’s ever known, so she’s asking God to help him fight.

Xander goes to Philip’s hospital room where Sarah questions what the hell he’s doing here. Xander says he’s just checking on his brother. Sarah asks if he came to finish the job. Xander asks where Philip is. Sarah informs him that he was taken for tests. Sarah threatens to call security because she’s not going to let him anywhere near the man that he almost killed. Sarah tells Xander to go because she cannot deal with anything else today. Xander asks what else happened. Sarah reveals that John Black almost died tonight. Xander asks how. Sarah says he was trying to retrieve the drug that Philip stole. Sarah guesses Philip was so desperate to get back in Xander’s good graces that he was willing to go to extreme measures. Xander questions blaming him for that. Sarah responds that John and Philip are both lucky to be alive and Xander is at the center of it. Xander mocks that she can just blame him for every sick person in the hospital. Sarah says she’s only blaming him for what he’s guilty of. Xander asks how is what happened to John his fault. Sarah explains that Steve said Philip was supposed to meet up with the tech who stole the drug to get a dose for Bo, only Philip never showed up because Xander was at his hotel room, beating the crap out of him. Xander asks if Bo never got the treatment then. Sarah admits it’s being given to him now but asks how much sooner it could’ve been given to him if Xander hadn’t given in to his feral instincts. Xander says he’ll take the hit but Sarah should save some blame for herself. Xander argues that if Sarah told him about Philip and the forged letter months ago, all of this could’ve been prevented. Sarah questions comparing the two when she lied to protect him and their family while Xander tried to kill his own brother. Sarah tells Xander that she doesn’t want to see him anymore and tells him to go or she’ll haev him thrown out, so Xander then storms out of the room.

Paul sits with Brady and tells him that all the good times with John keep running through his mind but also all the moments they didn’t share. Paul says last time he was in Salem, he just missed him. Paul says Brady, Belle, Sami, Eric, and Carrie had their whole lives to love and be loved by John while he feels like he just found out he was his dad. Brady knows John wishes he had been there for him since the beginning. Paul knows he didn’t even know he existed, but the moment he found out, he did everything he could to make sure he felt part of the family. Paul flashes back to John supporting him. Brady and Paul agree they hit the lottery by getting John Black as a dad. Paul cries that it’s what makes this so hard as he then walks away. Xander comes over to ask Kayla about Versavix. Kayla says it’s not a good time. Xander feels he deserves to know about the drug he was falsely accused of stealing. Steve repeats that it’s not a good time while Kayla says she can’t deal with this right now and walks away. Steve stops Xander and goes after Kayla. Belle comes over and tells Xander that she knows what he did to Philip. Xander says she doesn’t know anything but he hasn’t forgotten how Belle represented Philip in court when he stole his inheritance. Belle clarifies that she didn’t know about the forgery at the time. Xander says she knows now and is still standing by him but brings up that she’s also standing by EJ as he bids for the hospital, so he questions where she stands. Xander remarks that Belle should be disbarred while Belle responds that he should be in prison. Xander asks what about Philip’s crimes. Belle says Philip felt terrible about tricking Xander and said he wanted to make amends with him which is what he was trying to do when everything with the drug spiraled out of control. Belle hopes Xander is happy because Bo, Philip, and John could all lose their lives but he could still get his hands on the billion dollar drug.

Maggie returns to the living room and realizes the portrait of Victor is gone.

Steve checks on Kayla at the hospital to make sure she’s okay. Kayla says she’s fine but Steve worries about her being busy taking care of everyone else when this is her family too and her sister is battling cancer while her brother is fighting for his life. Kayla feels she has three siblings fighting for their lives since she always felt like John was her brother. Kayla says John has been her family for the better part of four decades. Steve says his too as he hugs her. Kayla asks if Steve is okay. Steve says he honestly doesn’t know as they’ve barely had two seconds to breathe. Steve says he is relieved that Bo got a dose of the drug, but it’s seeing John bandaged up and knowing he’s the one who dragged him in to this mess. Steve calls it eerie because it brings him back to the last time he saw John like that all those years ago which he then flashes back to. Steve cries that he told John then that he would keep him safe as Kayla hugs him.

Belle joins Marlena in the chapel. Belle says she’s sorry to bring this up now but it’s important. Belle reminds Marlena that she is John’s lawyer and he has given her power of attorney. Marlena doesn’t want to talk about this, insisting that John will survive this crisis. Belle says she’s not saying he won’t, but bring up how contentious things got between her and John when they almost lost Marlena which she flashes back to. Belle reminds Marlena that John didn’t want to put her in the same position, so he had her draw up advanced paperwork that says he wants to fight until the end which is exactly what she thinks he’s going to do. Marlena cries that she thinks so too. Belle talks about John never giving up hope that Marlena would come back to him and she did, so she thinks he’s going to come back to them too as they hug.

Paul sits back with Brady, who says he’s really glad he’s there as it would make John really happy to know they are all together. Paul says he does have some good news to share, reminding him that he and Andrew got engaged last time they were in town. Brady jokes about asking where his wedding invitation is. Paul reveals they originally planned to elope when they got back to San Francisco but John wasn’t happy and insisted they get married in Salem when everyone was reunited. Paul says that would be perfect since Kimberly was finishing up chemo and John was supposed to be back with the family. Paul says getting married here was the plan. Brady says that is the plan because it’s what John wanted and they should be surrounded by everyone who loves them. Brady declares that when John wakes up, they will have a lot to celebrate.

Kayla joins Marlena and Belle in the chapel. Marlena asks if something has happened. Kayla just wanted to let them know that John has been moved to his new room so they can be with him. They exit together and then Steve enters the chapel. Steve sits down to pray and says he knows it’s been awhile but he needs God’s help.

Sarah goes home to the Kiriakis Mansion where Maggie is staring up at where Victor’s portrait was. Sarah asks her what happened. Maggie responds that Xander happened as Sarah then looks at the blank spot on the wall.

Xander drags Victor’s portrait to the docks and sticks a knife through it before he then slams it in to the dumpster.

Marlena goes to see Kayla in her office at the hospital. Kayla questions her not being home with John. Marlena responds that she would be, but John’s not there.

Shawn worries that they are running out of time. Steve says he told them he had an idea as a hooded figure approaches, surprising Shawn. Jeffrey questions who it is. Steve introduces him to John Black and says he can always be counted on to save the day, who says that’s a fact. Steve says they have a lot of catching up to do, but for now tells John to do his thing. John and Shawn approach the door. Jeffrey asks Steve who that is. Steve explains that he’s the guy who is going to help them get in to the lab. Jeffrey worries that they already have too many people involved in this. Steve explains that John is his best friend and business partner, who is also an ISA expert who insisted on showing up here because that’s the kind of man he is. Steve tells Jeffrey to stop worrying and start being grateful that John Black is here. Shawn tells Steve that John is working as fast as he can since he knows Bo doesn’t have much time.

Hope is at Bo’s side in his hospital room. Bo remains in a coma as Hope wishes him a happy anniversary. Hope says she knows he can hear her so she’s just going to keep talking as she flashes back to their first wedding. Hope talks about Bo stealing a milk truck and getting arrested before their wedding but not being late. Hope says 40 years feels like just yesterday and asks where the time has gone. Hope’s daughter Ciara then enters the room as Hope tells Bo that she wishes they could do it all over again. Hope embraces Ciara and says she’s so happy she’s there. Hope adds that Chelsea is on her way and she hopes Shawn will be there soon. Ciara cries that she’s so scared as they hug. Hope admits she’s scared too. Hope explains that the doctors took Bo out of isolation so they could be together. Hope confirms that the priest gave Bo his last rites, but she thinks he’s waiting to give them all a chance to tell him how much they love him.

Shawn searches nearby and finds Asher’s burner phone that includes the texts between he and Steve. Jeffrey can’t believe his entire supply of Versavix is being held in some degenerate’s meth lab and wonders if Asher dropped the phone coming or going. Shawn says there’s no telling as Asher could be inside now or on his way back, but either way they need to be ready.

Marlena informs Kayla that Paul came home alone as John decided to make a pit stop. Marlena guesses he decided he should be there to help try to find the miracle cure for Bo. Marlena then asks if Kayla knew. Kayla knew about the mission to save Bo, but not about John’s involvement. Kayla informs her that the miracle cure is Versavix which Marlena recognizes as Jeffrey’s drug. Kayla explains that it was stolen from the lab so now Shawn and Steve are racing the clock to try and get it back. Marlena thought the drug was still in trials. Kayla confirms it is and that’s why it’s been a struggle but it’s the only thing that could possibly save Bo’s life. Kayla tells Marlena that she’s sorry that she didn’t fill her in or that John didn’t come home because of it. Marlena says she and John have the rest of their lives while Bo was a brother to John. Kayla says that Steve felt the same way as she flashes back to her past with Bo when she gave him Steve’s leather jacket. Kayla tells Marlena that they have always prided themselves on being strong, independent women but talks about the amount of times that Steve, John, and Bo stepped up for her and others in so many ways. Kayla adds that the downside to that heroism is not knowing if they are okay or if they are going to come back to them. Kayla points out that Steve came back to her when she didn’t think he would and so did John. Kayla declares that they’ve actually been very lucky all these years as they have fought and won, but she worries about if Bo never gets to do that again. Marlena responds that they will do the fighting for Bo and get it done. Marlena agrees that they are strong, independent women who will always be optimistic as will everyone who loves Bo.

Ciara tells Hope that she got on the first flight she could and that Ben is with the kids at the hotel. Ciara knows Bo won’t give up and will fight with everything he has. Hope says they will too. Hope asks Ciara to sit with Bo for awhile and says she’ll be back as soon as she can. They hug as Ciara cries that she loves her so much. Hope encourages her to be strong for Bo and says it will be okay as she then exits. Ciara sits next to Bo and talks about it being strange to see him so still when she’s used to always seeing him in action. Ciara talks about Ben fixing Bo’s bike for her after she totaled it. Ciara cries that she would give anything to be able to fix Bo. Ciara tells Bo about how she’s married to a great man in Ben, who is a great father to their children like Bo was to her. Ciara says Bo always made her feel safe and loved even when they were struggling. Ciara flashes back to when she was with Bo while Hope was gone. Ciara says that she and Ben will make sure their kids know they will always love them and always be together no matter what.

Bo dreams of returning to the town square in Salem and sits at the plaque of Tom and Alice, wondering what he’s doing here and why he’s in Salem.

Julie calls Hope and leaves a message to wish her a happy anniversary. Julie says she’s sending all her love and prayers to Hope, telling Hope to call her back when she gets a chance as she hangs up.

Steve tells Shawn and Jeffrey that the problem is the place has a redundant security system which means they both need to be disabled at the same time. Steve notes that John has one covered as Hope then appears and announces she’s got the other one.

Ciara talks about how Bo and Hope were always connected, no matter how far apart they were or how much time had passed. Ciara says they always found their way back to each other after everything they’ve been through including losing a son. Ciara flashes back to visiting Zach’s grave with Hope and Bo. Ciara questions how she is supposed to say goodbye to Bo.

Bo’s dream of being in the empty town square continues as a vase of flowers falls over. Bo notes that they are the kind of flowers you bring to someone’s funeral and guesses that’s not good.

Shawn questions what Hope is doing there. Hope explains that she couldn’t just sit and wait after he told her what was going on and she figured they could use her help, but she didn’t know John would be there. Steve calls it a last minute call. Hope says it sounds like they need both of their help which Steve agrees with.

Kayla tells Marlena about when her mom first started having memory problems, she signed her up for clinical trials in California and Bo dropped everything to take her and then picked her up when she got better. Marlena believes Caroline is looking down on everyone now, wanting her to know she’s doing the right thing and that everything will be okay. Kayla encourages Marlena to go get some sleep and wait for John. Marlena says she’s too amped up to sleep and told Paul to call her when John gets home. Kayla asks if she wants to be there. Marlena talks about when the door opened earlier, she was so excited to see John, so she doesn’t want to go through that again. Kayla assures that John will do what he always does; get his mission accomplished and then come home to the woman he loves.

Hope says they can definitely do this as she and John developed a system like this in Amsterdam. They successfully cut the wires. Hope tells Jeffrey to come inside with her and John to locate the drug and to stay behind them. Steve says he and Shawn will stay out and keep watch. Steve instructs Hope to get in and get out. Hope, John, and Jeffrey enter the meth lab where Asher is passed out inside.

Shawn tells Steve that he can’t believe Hoped show up. Steve says he shouldn’t be surprised and encourages that maybe Asher will recognize Hope as the cop who helped him out when he was a kid and won’t give them any trouble. Steve asks Shawn what’s going on. Shawn asks what if this is a mistake and he shouldn’t be there. Steve tells him not to do this. Shawn reminds Steve that even he said he should go when Hope called about Bo. Steve adds that Shawn said he should stay and points out that even Hope is in there so that means she believes in them. Shawn says he wants to believe that more than anything but if they fail and he chose to stay, that means he never gets to say goodbye to his dad. Steve knows Shawn is scared and that he blames himself for what happened to his dad. Steve declares that when it comes to Bo Brady, failure is not an option.

Hope, Jeffrey, and John search the lab while wearing hazmat suits. Jeffrey finds the Versavix and exclaims “that’s it!” which wakes up Asher, who then attacks Jeffrey.

Ciara talks to Bo about their family tradition of passing down names. Ciara feels she didn’t do a great job living up to her middle name of Alice growing up as she wasn’t always nice and took a lot for granted. Ciara wishes she realized sooner how blessed she is to be Bo’s daughter and a Brady in a place as special as Salem.

Bo’s dream continues as he visits the Brady Pub and comments on missing the place. He heads inside where Kayla and Steve are eating dinner and talking about Bo. Bo tries to join them but they can’t see or hear him which he questions. He then transports to back outside of the Pub and wonders what is going on.

Bo’s monitors start going off so Ciara calls for help and a nurse rushes in. Ciara prays for Bo to stay with them.

Asher questions what they are doing in the lab as the place catches fire. John begins fighting with Asher. John takes Asher to the ground and yells for Hope and Jeffrey to get out. Hope and Jeffrey rush out to Shawn and Steve, who question what is going on. Hope wants to go back in for John but the flames get higher, causing an explosion. Firefighters arrive and stop them from re-entering. One of the firefighters emerges from the lab and announces that they found a body.

The nurse gives Bo medication to raise his blood pressure and gets him stabilized for now as she then exits the room. Ciara wonders aloud where Hope is.

John is stretchered out from the lab. Jeffrey notes that he’s a doctor so he’d like to check him out. They confirm that he’s been badly burned and the hazmat suit didn’t help. Jeffrey states that John saved him while Steve declares now they have to save John.

Kayla finishes a call with Shawn and informs Marlena that there’s been an explosion. Kayla states that Shawn and Steve are okay but John has been hurt pretty badly.

Jeffrey agrees to ride with the firefighters to take John to the hospital while Steve and Hope encourage that he’s got through worse than this and will do it again. Shawn then notices that John’s hand is holding a vial of Versavix. Steve declares that he did it. John then manages to tell them to go save Bo.

Julie looks at Hope and Bo’s wedding photo on the mantle and says it’s been a long and winding road, but they helped each other as she flashes back to a past time with Bo. Julie picks up a photo of Doug and prays for anything he can do to help Bo and Hope.

Hope returns to Ciara with Shawn to Bo’s room. Ciara questions where she has been. Hope reveals that they got the drug to save Bo and says it might be the miracle they’ve been hoping for. Hope tells Bo not to dare leave her on their anniversary and to fight for them because she’s fighting for him.

Steve joins Jeffrey at the hospital and says that the junkie who attacked him is in the morgue. Jeffrey can’t believe how this all turned out. Steve says it turns out that John not only saved Jeffrey’s life but also his life’s work as he presents him with a box of Versavix. Jeffrey can’t believe it and questions how it survived the explosion. Steve says the firefighters said John protected it with his body and now tells Jeffrey to protect it because John gave Bo and a lot of others a chance to keep on living. Steve cries that now John is fighting to stay alive.

John is setup in a hospital bed with his face fully covered from the burns with Marlena and Kayla at his side. Marlena asks Kayla how bad it is and says she has to know. Kayla responds that John inhaled a lot of smoke which affected his airway, vocal cords, and lungs while he also has third degree burns on 30% of his body. Marlena says she called the kids and they are on their way. Kayla offers to text her when they get there if she wants to take a break and go to the chapel. Marlena says she just got John back, so she’s not leaving him now or ever.

Julie remains holding Doug’s photo and wishes a happy anniversary to them as well. Julie talks about always thinking of Doug still and how that will have to do for now until they meet again.

The nurse informs Hope, Shawn, and Ciara that she spoke with Kayla and to let her know when they are ready. Hope responds that they are ready and they pray the “Our Father”.

Marlena sits with John and says he’s been through so much in his life and she knows he’s exhausted. Marlena pleads for him not to leave them now. Steve enters the room and tells Marlena that Stefano may have called himself the Phoenix, but he had nothing on John Black. John’s mind goes in to a series of flashbacks to when he first arrived in Salem. John then manages to tell Marlena that he loves her before he then flatlines. Kayla calls for help and tells Marlena that she has to step out. Steve holds Marlena and says he’s got her as they watch on in worry. Marlena calls out to John that she’s there and she loves him too.

At the Brady Pub, Doug III is on the phone, telling them that they will get their money. He mentions having a job now and promises to start paying them back when he gets his first check. He finishes the call as Holly arrives and he asks what he can get for her. Holly wants his undivided attention and brings up that the GED exam is coming up and they have a lot of cramming to do. Holly pulls out a book and asks if he’s ready to get started.

Gabi has decorated at home for Arianna’s birthday as Marlena arrives and greets them. Marlena and Arianna say how much they’ve missed each other. Gabi tells Marlena that she’s so glad she could come, especially since she must be counting down the minutes until John gets home. Marlena says that sitting at home won’t make the time go faster, so she thought there was no better way to spend the time than to attend her great granddaughter’s birthday party. Gabi and Arianna say it means so much to them, especially since nobody else could make it which Marlena questions. Gabi explains Rafe being unable to come and brings up Leo and Javi to which Arianna points out Gabi firing Javi. Gabi says she’s tried to apologize but he hasn’t answered her. Gabi tells Marlena that she made it just in time for Arianna to blow out her candles. Arianna then makes her wish and blows out her candles.

Brady thanks Belle for picking up the chicken noodle soup for Tate and worries that if he doesn’t get better, he’s going to miss his graduation. Brady notes that Belle is distracted on her computer and questions what she is working on. Belle explains that she’s looking up records from someone she once defended because Shawn asked her to. Brady wants details on what she’s working on. Belle calls it a long story as she seems to find what she’s looking for.

Steve and Shawn work together on their laptops at Black Patch. Steve talks about being unable to find anything about Versavix on the dark web while Shawn finds it weird that Kevin knew so little about his roommate Asher Leeds. Steve points out that he knew him enough to trust him with an entire batch of a drug that could save countless lives which Shawn notes includes Bo. Shawn finds it interesting that Kevin said Asher had an expensive car but his family doesn’t seem like they could afford that. Belle calls Shawn and says she has good news and bad news. Belle shares the bad news that Asher’s arrest records are sealed because he was a minor at the time. Shawn guesses it’s just another dead end then but Belle says not necessarily as she reveals the good news is that she found her old case notes which included the fact that the arresting officer was Shawn’s mom, Hope. Shawn is surprised as Belle says she could hardly believe it either but that Hope might remember something that could help find Asher. After they hang up, Steve calls it a lucky break while Shawn calls Hope. Shawn tells Hope that he might be able to help Bo and asks her about an arrest she made years ago on Asher Leeds.

Doug III tells Holly that she has finals coming up so she shouldn’t be wasting her time on him. Holly reminds him that they agreed that she would help him study. Doug III says he only agreed to think about it. Doug III says he appreciates what she’s trying to do but he has a job now and thinks are looking up, so maybe the time to get his GED has passed. Holly disagrees and talks about how she tutored middle schoolers. Holly tells Doug III that if he gives her an hour, she will have him convinced that he can do this.

Arianna and Gabi eat birthday cake with Marlena. Marlena brings up Will and says she’s sorry he isn’t there, adding that Will and Sonny would’ve been there in a heartbeat if they knew she wanted to spend her birthday in Salem. Marlena mentions that Will and Sonny were actually planning her a birthday party in Arizona. Arianna respond that sometimes, a girl just misses her mom. Marlena is glad that she got to spend her birthday with her here. Marlena adds that Will and Sonny understand they get to celebrate her birthday when she goes back for graduation. Gabi notes that being just around the corner and guesses they’ll be flying back soon but Arianna reveals she is not graduating which Gabi questions. Arianna clarifies that she finished all her classes and got her degree, they are just sending it to her here. Marlena asks if something happened. Arianna says it’s nothing like that and she just doesn’t see the point of flying back just to walk across a stage. Gabi asks if she’s sure she can’t convince her. Arianna responds that she’d rather spend more time with Gabi here. Marlena asks how long she’ll be home. Arianna says she was thinking through the summer which Gabi says is more than okay while Marlena looks perplexed.

Brady tells Belle about how Tate is trying to get better in time for the meeting with the adoption agency. Brady asks Belle if Tate and Sophia need a lawyer. Belle says if he thinks so, they probably do. Belle says she’ll send names for a couple people. Brady says anyone but Melinda Trask and is sure whoever she refers is fine. Belle says she would do it herself but there’s a conflict of interest with Johnny and Chanel. Brady understands that she’s very busy as district attorney and with whatever case Shawn has her working on.

Shawn finishes his call with Hope and tells Steve that she totally remembers Asher as he went to pre-school with his brother Zach back in the day. Shawn explains that Hope went to bat for Asher in his sentencing, but worries that he could be dealing drugs now which would explain his expensive car. Shawn shows Steve a list of names that Hope remembered Asher running with. They come across Asher’s alias used with drug dealers. Steve recognizes seeing the name before on a forum in the dark web. Steve pulls it up and shows Shawn the user name which includes “614” and Asher’s birthdate is June 14. Steve declares that his overconfidence will lead them right to him.

Doug III sits with Holly and says it feels weird as he feels like someone will ask him for a refill any time now. Holly says they could pack up and head to the town square but guesses he’s just trying to get out of this. Holly asks where to start and brings up her notes that she brought. Doug III notes that math and science were never really his strong suits. Holly mentions writing and composition so Doug III decides on poetry.

Brady and Belle talk about decorating for John’s welcome home. Brady says he’s realized how much they really need John as their family has been through so much. Belle says there is now light at the end of the tunnel. Belle wants to start cleaning up but Brady brings up Belle’s gig that she’s doing for Shawn and asks if this means they are back on good terms. Belle responds that they are family so they will always be on good terms but the ship has sailed on reconciliation. Belle tells Brady that he will just have to get used to the fact that she’s with EJ now which Brady remains silent on. Belle asks what she has to do to convince him that EJ is trying to be a better person and just wants to put some good out in to the world. Brady guesses she’s going to try to persuade him to vote EJ’s way so he can take over the hospital over Titan. Brady tells Belle that she can make the case but he’s going to vote with his conscience so she won’t sway him on this one. Belle says maybe she won’t, but asks if Kristen will.

Steve makes contact on the dark web with Asher, who described the drug he’s selling which he has no doubt is Versavix. Steve says they are going to arrange a meeting and they can get that Versavix while Shawn adds that they will also be able to save Bo’s life.

Brady doesn’t see what Kristen has to do with any of this. Belle reminds him of being at Rachel’s birthday party. Belle asks if Brady will vote in EJ’s favor if Rachel Blake comes back. Brady questions her casually talking about how EJ kidnapped an old, frail woman. Brady says EJ using Rachel Blake’s safety as a negotiation in a business deal is disgusting and questions if Belle condones that. Belle starts to argue that they don’t know EJ was involved but admits it may have been something the old EJ would’ve done before he got shot. Belle says all she knows is that EJ is done now and wants to make up for the terrible things he’s done in the past which is why he wants to buy the hospital. Brady remarks that she has got it bad. Brady questions EJ waking up a good man but not good enough to admit what he did. Brady tells Belle to face it that EJ is never willingly going to bring Rachel Blake back if he thinks she’s going to testify against him. Brady states that a man can only change so much, but EJ’s first and last priority has always been himself.

Marlena gives Arianna a gift card for her birthday which she loves. Marlena thanks her for letting her celebrate her birthday. Marlena decides she will get home in case John arrives early. Gabi thanks Marlena for coming as she then exits. Arianna tells Gabi that she’s pretty wiped and is going to turn in early. They hug as Gabi tells her it’s really good to have her home.

Doug III talks to Holly about poetry. Doug III analyzes a poem as sad but incredibly romantic. Doug III then decides they’ve had enough and calls for a study break as he goes to get some fries.

Jeffrey goes to meet Steve and Shawn and asks if they found the missing Versavix. Steve says they may have a location so Jeffrey questions what they are doing here. Shawn says they first need something from him. Jeffrey argues that they are wasting time. Shawn reminds Jeffrey of their deal that they get to take Versavix to Bo. Jeffrey says they don’t actually know if the drug can save Bo’s life as there could be side effects they aren’t even aware of. Shawn says that’s a chance he’s willing to take. Steve adds that if the plan goes south, no one has to know Jeffrey went along with it and they will take the hit. Jeffrey agrees to go along with them so they exit together.

Doug III and Holly eat fries together. Holly asks how working at the Pub is going. Doug III says usually good but he’s had better days. Holly asks if something happened. Doug III tells her about Julie popping in and it being the first time he’s seen her since she kicked him out. Holly questions Julie not giving him a break even though he told her about his plan to buy the necklace back. Doug III confirms Julie wants nothing to do with him still. Holly says she’s really sorry. Doug III says it’s okay as he gets why she feels that way. Doug III declares that he will still get the necklace back for Julie and her family because they deserve that much even if they want nothing to do with him.

Brady tells Belle that whatever games EJ and Kristen are playing with each other have nothing to do with him and his vote is not for sale. Belle agrees that it should be on what’s best for the hospital and not some vendetta he has against EJ. Brady argues that it’s not a vendetta, he just doesn’t trust EJ. Belle questions him trusting Xander. Brady says that Xander hasn’t tortured their family for years. Belle brings up Xander beating Philip nearly to death while Brady says they don’t know that. Belle mocks him being in denial. Brady says he hoped Xander did not do that to Philip. Belle asks what if he did. Brady says he’ll worry about that later but he knows EJ did a lot of bad things to Sami and Eric, so it won’t be easy for Marlena to work with him. Belle states that she knows all of the things EJ has done in the past. Brady complains about hearing EJ is a changed man. Belle insists that it’s not like EJ is Stefano and he’s trying to help people, not destroy everyone’s lives. Brady tells Belle to put herself in his shoes and pretend she’s on the board, not dating EJ, and questions if she really thinks EJ should be in charge of the hospital.

Shawn, Steve, and Jeffrey go to the location to meet Asher Leeds. Shawn calls the warehouse a meth lab. Jeffrey worries that the place could randomly explode and wants to hurry up and get the drug. Shawn says they have to find a way in. Steve gets an idea and steps away.

Holly tells Doug III that she knows it seems hopeless but she believes Julie will find it in her heart to forgive him if he gets the necklace back. Doug III disagrees since Julie said it wasn’t about the necklace but about him taking advantage and betraying her. Holly argues that he never would’ve done it if he wasn’t desperate. Doug III says that Julie’s right that he took advantage and that’s why he needs to make it right. Holly asks if he has any leads. Doug III responds that Melinda just got back to town, so he’s hoping she can tell him something about who she sold it to but he figures it’s probably another dead end. Holly then gets an idea and brings up that Tate’s Grandpa is a private investigator so maybe he could help track it down. Doug III brings up John missing in action. Holly says he’s actually coming home tonight. Doug III says he’s happy for Tate and will keep John in mind if Melinda doesn’t pan out. Doug III then decides this has been fun but thinks they should call it a night which Holly questions. He reminds her that she has finals and he has a few leads that he wants to look in to. He thanks Holly for everything. Holly tells him that he’s not bailing on her until he gets his GED. He says he wouldn’t dream of it as he then walks away.

Gabi goes to Arianna’s room but finds that she is gone.

Arianna goes to Small Bar where Doug III arrives and approaches the bar. Arianna greets him and tells him that it’s her birthday, so she asks if he’d like to buy her a drink.

Brady tells Belle that he’s sorry things got tense earlier. Belle decides EJ is just a topic to steer clear of since Brady means too much to her for that to come between them. Brady agrees and says tonight is for celebrating. Belle brings out cupcakes she made that were John’s favorite and says it will be really nice to have him home. Marlena then comes home. Brady tells her that they thought John could use a little celebration after everything he’s been through. Belle asks if everything is okay. Marlena responds that it’s not as she has some pretty bad news.

Steve returns to Shawn and Jeffrey and says he didn’t find another way in. Jeffrey questions his great idea. Shawn gets a call from Hope, who informs him of some bad news. Shawn hangs up and informs Steve that they are bringing in a priest to give Bo his last rites.

Marlena takes Belle and Brady’s hands and announces that Roman just called to say they are giving Bo his last rites. Belle hugs Marlena and says she just saw Shawn and told him that John was coming home while she was holding out hope for two miracles. Marlena wishes that were true.

Shawn tells Steve that Hope said the family should get there as soon as possible. Steve says he’s so sorry. Shawn worries that this means they’ve given up hope that Bo is going to pull through. Steve tells Shawn that if Hope needs him there, it will at least give him a chance to say goodbye. Shawn refuses to say goodbye and declares they are not giving up when they are this close.

Holly walks through the town square as a man comes around the corner, following her and recording on his phone.

Gabi panics as she searches the house for Arianna. Gabi then calls JJ and tells him that she needs his help as it’s about Arianna. Gabi explains that Arianna said she was going to bed, then she went to her room and she wasn’t there. Gabi says she’s searched the entire house and found nothing, so she questions where she could be.

Doug III and Arianna end up having sex and lay in bed afterwards. He says that was unexpected while she says she could have worse ways to spend her birthday. Doug III asks if she means like being alone in a bar and hopes it wasn’t a big birthday like her 21st. Arianna points out that she wasn’t alone long and she wouldn’t be hanging out with friends since she doesn’t really know anyone her age here. Doug III wondered why he hadn’t seen her around. He notes that her phone has been going off nonstop. Arianna checks her phone and sees the missed calls and messages from Gabi. Arianna tells Doug III that she will put her phone on do not disturb so they won’t be bothered again as they resume kissing.

Belle tells Marlena that she feels like an idiot for getting Shawn’s hopes up like that. Marlena tells her that she did nothing wrong. They hear the door so they get ready to surprise John but it’s Paul. Paul explains that it’s just him for now as Andrew is getting debriefed by the ISA and it’s going to take awhile. Marlena asks about John. Paul says that he’s fine but just had to make a pit stop on his way home.

Steve tells Shawn that no one is giving up on Bo. Shawn says they just need to find a way in there and suggests ramming the door with a car. Jeffrey reminds him of his concern about alarms. Shawn says at least they would be inside but Steve worries about how much security and guards they could have in there. Steve says the only way this works is to get in undetected. Shawn worries that they are running out of time. Steve says he told them he had an idea as a hooded figure approaches, surprising Shawn. Jeffrey questions who it is. Steve introduces him to John Black and says that no one knows how to save the day like John, who says that’s a fact.

Johnny and Chanel pack boxes and talk about moving in to the town house, Abe and Paulina having more space, and them having more privacy. They talk about still wanting their own place and Johnny emphasizes the more privacy as they kiss.

Cat and Stephanie set up at Small Bar for another hospital fundraiser and hope for another good turnout. Stephanie mentions that her parents can’t come since Kayla is stuck at work and Steve is on a case. Chad then arrives.

Alex sits at Philip’s side in the hospital, saying he has to wake up. Brady comes in and says he came as soon as he heard and he can’t believe it. Alex says Philip is lucky to be alive. Brady comments that someone really did a number on him. Alex responds that Kate is convinced it was Xander, who’s apparently being questioned by the police now. Brady says that doesn’t make sense as he thought they were getting along. Alex says there must have been some kind of rift. Brady questions doing that. Alex hopes not for their family.

Sarah returns home to the Kiriakis Mansion where Maggie asks if she was okay going back to work so soon. Sarah says not really, so Maggie asks what’s wrong. Sarah assumes she hasn’t heard about Philip. Maggie says no since she was at the zoo with Victoria all day. Sarah informs Maggie that Philip was brought in to the ER this morning after being beaten within an inch of his life, so he’s in critical condition. Sarah says they worked on him for hours and he has severe injuries, including multiple organ damage. Maggie is shocked and asks if they know who attacked him. Sarah says Philip is still unconscious so he can’t say, but Kate has a theory that it was Xander. Sarah admits she has a gut feeling that Kate is right.

Xander sits in the interrogation room at the police station and complains to a guard that he knows nothing about Philip’s attack, so he demands to be releasd now and threatens to sue. The guard tells Xander that he’s free to go but not to skip town because he’s still a person of interest.

Johnny and Chanel continue kissing and talk about how they could get used to this. Chanel removes Johnny’s shirt until Paulina walks in and interrupts them.

Chad didn’t realize Cat would be there. Stephanie explains that the original instructor flaked and Cat was an art major, so she volunteered to step in. Chad jokes about Cat being such an expert face painting at the carnival. Cat say she wasn’t an art major long but hopefully she’s a better instructor than student. Chad assure she’ll be great. Stephanie says it’s a sip and paint, so she goes to get wine glasses. Chad tells Cat that if he knew she was an art enthusiast, he could’ve changed their date plans to a museum. Stephanie questions their date. Cat explains it was the charity auction. Stephanie thought EJ won the date with Cat. Chad explains that EJ insisted he take his place since EJ is spoken for now and is dating Belle. Cat informs Stephanie that they aren’t going to an art museum as they have more exciting plans to go skydiving. Chad sarcastically says it will be awesome.

Alex tells Brady that he knows Xander is capable of things but doesn’t think he would do this to family and points out that he’s changed. Brady flashes back to Xander threatening him with a baseball bat when he thought that he hit Sarah with his car. Brady then responds that he thinks the only way they will know something is when Philip wakes up and tells them what happened. Alex says that’s if he wakes up.

Maggie asks if Sarah thinks Xander attacked Philip. Sarah says they both know how Xander feels about his brother right now. Sarah asks what Maggie is thinking. Maggie says when Sarah went to work and Xander came home, she asked where he had been and he said a deal had gone south so he had to do some damage control but he didn’t say specifically where he had been. Maggie then remembers Xander was putting ice on his hand when she walked in and he said he had tripped in to a railing. Sarah asks what if he’s lying. Xander then comes home. Sarah asks Maggie to let her and Xander speak privately. Maggie decides she will go visit Philip at the hospital and exits. Sarah assumes Xander heard about Philip’s assault. Xander remarks that it couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy. Sarah argues that he could’ve died and still might. Xander says one could hope. Sarah then asks Xander if he beat up Philip. Xander responds that Jada thinks so since she brought him in for questioning. Sarah assumed so since Jada asked if she knew where he was. Xander tells Sarah that there’s no need to fret since they had no evidence so they let him go. Sarah asks why he’s acting this way when she’s worried. Sarah tells Xander to just be honest with her and asks if he did this. Sarah grabs Xander’s hand and says that Maggie said he was icing his hand earlier. Sarah questions if he tripped and hit a railing or because he beat up Philip. Xander turns away so Sarah questions how he could do something so monstrous. Sarah says she was there when they brought Philip in, so she saw the damage he did. Sarah knows he’s angry at Philip but asks how he could do something so vicious and inhumane. Sarah tells Xander that she can’t even look at him right now. Xander responds that the feeling is mutual.

Paulina apologizes for interrupting and says she just wanted to come by to surprise Chanel and Johnny. Paulina then presents them with the keys and reveals she and Abe moved in to their own town home so this place is now theirs. Paulina congratulates them on being the new owners, leaving Johnny and Chanel surprised.

Chad asks if Cat and Stephanie need any help. Cat thinks they are okay. Stephanie mentions just having to grab the wine. Chad says he can grab the wine but then gets a phone call. Chad says he has to take this as he has a hot date tonight and steps away. Cat looks disappointed while Stephanie comments that it sounds like Chad has started dating again. Cat talks about theirs just being fun skydiving and asks what could possibly be romantic about that. Stephanie says she saw the way Cat’s face lit up when Chad got there and the look on her face when he mentioned his date, noting that she seemed really disappointed. Cat says Chad is just a friend and nothing more. Stephanie really hopes that’s true. Cat guesses Stephanie is still upset with her for impersonating her cousin. Stephanie says she not and they understand now that she was only trying to save her mom. Stephanie tells Cat this isn’t about her past so Cat asks what it is about. Stephanie admits that she’s kind of protective of Chad and his kids because they’ve been through so much already, so she hates the thought of them getting hurt. Cat expresses deep regret for hurting Chad and never wants to do that again. Stephanie suggests maybe it’s best that she stays away for her own sake too. Stephanie informs Cat that she and Chad broke up because he wasn’t ready to move on from Abigail and something tells her that he may never be ready.

Sarah questions Xander saying the feeling is mutual. Xander comments on Sarah being so self-righteous when she has been lying to him for weeks, possibly even months. Sarah tries to question him but Xander says to spare him and not to play stupid with him. Xander thought that was beneath her but he also thought lying to her husband and laughing behind his back, yet she knew the truth about Philip all along that he forged his father’s letter and stole half his inheritance. Xander says that Sarah knew Philip had no legal claim to Titan at all but said nothing. Xander argues that he’s her husband and she let Philip play him for a damn fool. Xander asks if he missed anything or if she wants to lie to him some more.

Chanel excitedly hugs Paulina and thanks her while Johnny says this is too generous. Paulina says she and Abe are just happy that they found their way back to each other so this is a gift to celebrate that. Paulina asks if they still want to go to the sip and paint with her for the hospital fundraiser. Chanel and Johnny admit that it slipped their mind but she can count them in.

Alex and Brady join Cat and Stephanie for the Sip and Paint fundraiser. Stephanie introduces Brady to Cat. Chad comes back and announces that Maggie won’t be making it and had to cancel their date. Cat looks relieved as she realizes that was the date Chad was talking about. Chad talks about it being the million dollar date that Maggie won in the auction and explains that she just heard about Philip so she’s going to visit him in the hospital. Chad tells Alex and Brady that he’s sorry about that and asks how Philip is doing. Alex says they just came from the hospital. Brady states that Philip is in critical condition.

Maggie visits Philip in the hospital. Maggie sits at his side and recalls the last time they saw each other where she told him how upset she was with him for the pain he caused and how many people he got caught up in his drama. Maggie says despite all of that, she wants him to know that she can’t stay mad at him for very long just like his father. Maggie cries that he’s a fighter so he has to fight and get better soon. Maggie kisses his forehead and says she’ll be praying for him.

Stephanie steps aside with Alex, who says he’s really worried about Philip. Stephanie asks about the police questioning Xander. Alex says he didn’t tell Brady but he keeps remembering how they saw Xander in the town square around the time Philip was attacked and he was upset about having to work with Philip. Stephanie notes he was only doing that to not jeopardize the DiMera takeover. Alex wonders if this could be Xander’s warped idea to get Philip out of the picture because if Philip’s dead, his issues go away. Stephanie asks if he’s telling her that he thinks Xander did this. Alex says he hopes not, but they both know what he’s capable of.

Sarah asks Xander where this is coming from. Xander asks if it matters. Sarah says it does and asks if Philip said something before or after he beat him to a pulp. Xander states that someone said just enough to set his gears in motion and how it all started to fall in place. Xander brings up seeing Sarah and Philip together at the hospital fundraiser and how Sarah once tried to confess that she was lying but then backtracked and claimed it was about Stephanie and Philip having an affair. Xander says she must have been so relieved when Alex and Stephanie covered for her when the truth came out and asks who else knew. Sarah responds that no one is to blame but her as it was her decision alone. Xander questions if she admits it. Sarah responds that she knew Philip was lying about Victor’s letter and that it was a forgery and she kept it from him. Xander asks how long she knew and when she found out that Philip was committing fraud. Sarah says it was after the judge granted Philip half of the company and everything. Sarah explains that Stephanie overheard Philip talking to Kate on the phone about the forgery and was upset which is why she broke up with Philip. Xander questions why her first action wasn’t to tell him. Sarah explains that she was going to but she confronted Kate and Philip about it first and Kate made some convincing points that Victor would’ve wanted Philip to have part of the company if he wasn’t suffering mental health issues and she thinks deep down that Xander knew that too. Xander says that wasn’t in Victor’s will. Sarah argues that it should’ve been because Philip was Victor’s son too and shouldn’t be punished for mental health issues. Xander questions her siding with the crazy guy over her own husband. Sarah says it’s not about picking sides and that’s not the only reason she didn’t tell him about the forgery. Sarah brings up that Xander has just inherited an enormous amount of money and power, so she was afraid that if that power went unchecked, he would give in to his worst impulses. Sarah thought that Philip could provide some kind of balance and keep Xander on track and out of prison. Xander questions that being how much faith she had in him. Sarah argues that she wanted him to be here to help raise their daughter and asks why that is so hard to understand. Sarah tells Xander that he knows she loves him and that she has learned to accept him as he is, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t remember what he is capable of or that she doesn’t want him to be a better person. Xander questions that justifying lying to him for months just to keep him in line. Sarah complains that it wasn’t an easy decision and says she agonized over it every single on day on whether it was the right or wrong choice. Sarah declares that she didn’t make the wrong choice because what Xander did to Philip just proves that her instincts were dead on and that she was right the entire time.

Chanel, Johnny, and Paulina join the Sip and Paint fundraiser. Paulina praises Stephanie and Cat for the turnout. Stephanie asks Cat if she’s ready to be their instructor. Chad and Cat joke with each other about Cat liking clowns while Chad hates them. Paulina jokes that she would enjoy painting a tasteful nude male. Stephanie says they don’t have any models while Paulina points out that they have plenty right here. Stephanie points out Alex and Brady but says she won’t include Johnny out of respect for Chanel. Cat thinks none of them want to disrobe here in the Small Bar, so they will probably stick to something like a fruit bowl. Paulina says they will follow Cat’s lead as their instructor. Cat worries to Chad about Paulina being right that painting a fruit bowl is boring. Cat then agrees that it’s not fun and exciting, so she’s starting to reconsider Paulina’s suggestion. Chad points out that none of the males there will want to get nude. Cat asks what if they don’t have to get completely naked and just strip down to their underwear. Chad jokes that he’ll do it if she does it, so Cat decides they will stick with the fruit bowl.

Xander can’t believe that Sarah is still trying to take the moral high ground after stabbing him in the back. Sarah responds that she knows what she did was wrong, but she did it for the right reasons because she was afraid of what the father of her child might do if he found out the truth. Sarah tells Xander to look at his recent history of going after Brady with a baseball bat, plotting to kill him, and pointing a gun at Philip’s head. Xander remarks that the gun wasn’t loaded while Sarah shouts that he didn’t know that. Sarah argues that she has looked past a lot and convinced herself that him becoming a husband and father might keep his violent impulses in check, but part of her always knew that he was capable of unspeakable and terrible things which is why she kept her mouth shut, because she knew a day like today would happen. Sarah states that Philip is clinging to his life because of what he did. Xander responds that he admitted to nothing. Sarah asks if he’s seriously going to deny it now. Xander says it’s clear to him that he can’t trust her and if he did beat the living daylights out of poor, crazy Philip, she’d only have herself to blame because if she would’ve just been honest from the start, he wouldn’t have had to partner with Philip and he wouldn’t have had the chance to undermine him. Xander declares if Sarah just trusted him, none of this would’ve happened so maybe she made the wrong choice. Sarah responds that the only mistake she made was believing he could be a decent person. Sarah wants Xander out. Xander says it’s his house. Sarah says it’s also her mom’s house. Xander responds that if he’s leaving, his daughter is coming with him. Sarah says over her dead body. Xander asks if Sarah is telling him that after all the lying and conspiring against him that she did, he’s the one that has to be separated from his daughter. Sarah argues that she’s not a violent person, she doesn’t break the law, and she doesn’t beat people within an inch of their lives, so Victoria will be staying with her and that is final. Xander states that he will pack his belongings, but warns that this is far from over. Xander then walks out, leaving Sarah holding back tears.

Cat hosts the Sip and Paint as Chanel, Johnny, and Paulina are at one table while Brady, Alex, and Stephanie are at another. Cat goes over and sits with Chad. Chad asks Cat about Xander attempting to apologize. Cat says that she told him he had to apologize to Felicity, but she doesn’t think he’ll be apologizing to anyone anytime soon. Chad jokes that he’s sure he’ll be allowed visitors in prison. Cat advises Chad on his painting and ends up touching his hand. Chanel questions Paulina’s drinking while Johnny asks what Paulina is painting. Paulina responds that she’s not painting a dull ass fruit bowl and is doing what she suggested but everyone was too prudish to agree with, so she is painting a nude male. Chanel adds if it’s someone in particular. Paulina says she’s using her imagination and comments that Chanel is too. Johnny hopes Chanel isn’t painting a nude male. Chanel shows her painting of a heart that says “home sweet home”. Johnny says great minds think alike and shows that his says “our new home”. Stephanie tells Brady that he must be so excited about his dad coming home. Brady says he is so relieved as he missed him so much, but as positive as that is, he can’t help but think about Philip. Alex prays that he recovers. Brady feels that’s all they can do at this point.

Sarah breaks down crying in the living room. Maggie returns and rushes to her side, asking what happened after she went to the hospital. Sarah cries that she and Xander got in to a huge blowout. Maggie asks if Xander admitted to attacking Philip. Sarah says no but it’s obvious that he did. Sarah adds that he knows that she lied to him about the forgery and kept him in the dark and he’s so furious about it but she’s beyond furious with him for what he did to Philip. Sarah cries that it’s worse than a mess and that it’s over as Maggie hugs her.

Xander packs his bags and goes to Victoria in her crib. Xander tells her that he wouldn’t wake her and interrupt her dreams even if it’s so tempting to give her a proper goodbye and explain why she won’t see him anymore. Xander says it will be a bit different around here but he wants her to know the one thing that won’t change is how much he loves her. Xander calls Victoria his light and joy. Xander declares that no matter what happens, he will always be there for her forever.

Chanel and Johnny return home and hang their paintings on the wall. Johnny can’t believe they have their very own home, joking that they could walk around naked, eating ice cream. Chanel says that does sound nice and reminds him that Paulina doesn’t have a key anymore to interrupt their privacy. Johnny suggests finishing what they started earlier then. Johnny welcomes her home as they kiss onto the couch.

Paulina thanks Stephanie for the evening while Stephanie thanks Paulina for coming. Stephanie says it was a blast and they raised a nice sum for the hospital. Brady thanks Stephanie for the invite and says it was nice way to pass the time which has been going slowly as he waits for John to come home. Brady says he’ll be getting home so he can be there when John arrives. Stephanie sends her best. Brady offers Paulina a ride home which she accepts. Paulina says Brady can judge her work of art. Brady doesn’t know what to say and Paulina calls it abstract as they exit together. Chad asks Cat what he can do but Cat says she’s got it. Chad says it turns out she had nothing to worry about since she was a good instructor. Chad tells Cat that she did good tonight with everything. Chad tells Cat that he’ll see her on their date. Cat remains obviously distracted as Chad stops to look back at her and then exits the bar.

Sarah stands in the doorway as Xander talks to Victoria. Xander tells Victoria that she will always be part of him even if they are not physically together and that does give him some comfort, but not being there to protect her and look after her fills him with anxiety and fear. Xander says it will be pretty rough on him to be separated from her, so he will try to be strong for her. Xander promises to see Victoria really soon and says he loves her so much. Xander then gets up and turns around to see Sarah in the doorway. Xander tells her that he was just saying goodbye. Sarah confirms that she heard. Sarah tells Xander that she’s sorry that it came to this and she will always love him, but she can’t live with him. Xander tells Sarah to take good care of their little girl because she’s all that matters to him now. Xander then exits.

At the Hernandez house, Gabi questions Javi about where the list is for the Gabi Chic launch event. Javi responds that he’s still waiting on a few RSVPs. Gabi instructs him to call their assistants and gives a him list of orders, adding that she needs him to fetch wrapping paper as well all before Arianna’s plane lands. Javi is left annoyed while Gabi questions why he’s looking at her like that when they have a million things to do. JJ then shows up at the door. Gabi questions what he’s doing there. JJ responds that it’s official police business as he needs to ask her a few questions.

Doug III works at the Brady Pub and struggles remembering his table’s orders. Belle arrives for a takeout order. Doug III says they are a little under staffed because of Roman and Kate going to the hospital. Belle asks what happened. Doug III informs her that Kate’s son was hurt which Belle questions. Doug III says he thinks Philip was in some kind of fight. Belle asks if he knows if Philip is okay.

Chad goes to the Spectator office and comments on Leo is typing away on his computer. Leo tells him about how much coffee he’s had and how ideas are pouring out of him. Chad asks if a big story broke. Leo tells him there’s two but he can’t decide which one to go with. Leo tells him that first there’s EJ and Xander fighting over the hospital but now there’s the question of who beat Philip to a bloody pulp which Chad questions.

Paulina goes to the DiMera Mansion to meet with EJ. She said that EJ said this had something to do with Chanel, so she asks what the hell it’s about.

Shawn calls Steve from the town square and asks if he had any luck tracking down Kevin’s roommate but he hasn’t. Shawn says they still don’t know why he didn’t bring the drug back to the lab, so he guesses if he doesn’t show up with the drug in hand, they will just have to keep looking.

Paulina asks EJ why he wants to speak to her about Chanel. EJ is not sure she’s aware that Chanel has come to see him a few times, mostly to make it clear that she supports Johnny’s campaign to cut him out of his life. EJ says they don’t always succeed on setting their children on the right path, but his point is that no parent is perfect. EJ tells Paulina to imagine that thanks to some mistake she made, she was cut out of Chanel’s life. EJ asks if that would break her heart and if she would do anything to try and fix it. Paulina questions that being what this visit is about and if he wants her to intercede with her daughter on his behalf.

Gabi asks if it’s about EJ’s shooting but JJ says it’s about Philip Kiriakis as he was beaten very badly earlier today and is in the hospital. Gabi asks what happened. JJ says they aren’t sure exactly but Kate, who found him, believes it comes from a workplace dispute with Xander. JJ asks if Gabi knows anything about that.

Doug III wishes he could tell Belle more, but he guesses that Philip must be hurt pretty badly if he’s in the hospital. Belle asks if he knows who Philip got in a fight with. Doug III says he doesn’t and that he has to get back to work. Shawn then arrives and asks Belle if Roman is around for a coffee but Belle says he’s not. Belle asks Shawn if the police have any leads on who attacked Philip. Shawn is surprised to learn of the attack since he had the day off. Belle explains that Doug III just said that Roman and Kate went to the hospital but he was light on details so she was hoping Shawn knew something but he doesn’t. Belle knows Shawn is really worried about Bo but notes that he seems extra distracted today, so she questions what is going on. Shawn says a whole lot actually which Belle questions. Shawn says his head is spinning as he’s worried about his dad and his mom and on top of that, he doesn’t feel great at all. Belle suggests he needs some rest and mentions that she just ordered some chicken soup for Tate as he came down with the flu last night. Shawn mentions hearing the great news that John is coming home. Belle confirms he’s on a flight with Paul coming home tonight. Shawn says he’s so happy for her. Belle guesses he hasn’t heard anything on Bo yet which Shawn confirms and says he feels like he let him down again. Julie then enters the Pub and is shocked to see Doug III as she thought he had left town. Julie guesses he’s depending on the kindness of Roman now and says she’s not surprised. Julie declares that as long as he is working here, she will be eating at the Bistro. Julie says she has nothing to say to him but Doug III stops her and says he has something to say to her.

Gabi questions JJ thinking Xander beat up his own brother. JJ asks if they’ve ever seen them fight. Gabi and Javi say they haven’t. Gabi remarks that they were practically clicking their heels when they took over DiMera, but admits there seemed to be some tension between them recently like Philip was being frozen out. Gabi recalls finding Philip in her office and he said his office was being renovated. JJ asks if she has any idea what was going on between them or why Philip would be frozen out. Gabi says his guess is as good as hers.

Chad questions Leo saying they think Xander beat his own brother to a bloody pulp. Leo says Xander has the muscles and talks about his fuse. Chad calls this awful. Leo says if Xander is guilty, something must have set him off and asks why he would use Philip as a punching bag. Chad says he doesn’t know unless…

EJ tells Paulina that he doesn’t think it’s an outrageous request since their children are married which makes them family. EJ says he’s always been there for them but Paulina brings up EJ trying to have her ousted as Mayor and then using his leverage to blackmail her in to making him district attorney. Paulina adds that now EJ is trying to buy the hospital for his own corrupt reasons. EJ argues that he’s trying to help the community. Paulina doesn’t believe him and says to her, it’s just another con. Paulina tells EJ that Abe has decided as a member of the hospital board, that he will be voting to accept Xander’s bid. EJ says that’s his prerogative but that’s not why he asked her here. EJ reminds Paulina that they both want what is best for their children. Paulina questions that being to let EJ back in to Johnny’s life. Paulina tells EJ that Johnny is a grown ass man who can decide who is or isn’t in his life. EJ suggests his view of their relationship has become distorted since finding out what happened between he and Sami. EJ says if he could only make amends to Johnny and get him to see him as a loving father who would do anything for him, then perhaps Johnny will see that he could be a loving parent too and give Chanel the family she deserves. EJ says their children being happy would be what’s best for them. Paulina shares the good news that Johnny and Chanel have found their way back to each other which EJ calls wonderful. Paulina remarks that Chanel’s heart was shattered when she lost out on the adoption, but she doesn’t blame Johnny, she blames EJ. Paulina thinks they are done here. EJ stops her and says there’s one thing she should know and that’s that he will never give up on his son. EJ declares that he will die for him.

Belle questions Shawn saying he let his father down again. Shawn explains that there’s an experimental drug that could possibly save his dad’s life and he knew it was a longshot, but they were close to getting their hands on it and now it doesn’t look like they will get it and it’s his fault. Shawn reiterates that Bo’s only in this condition because of him. Belle says he’s been beating himself up for far too long and it’s just causing him unnecessary pain and suffering. Belle encourages him not to lose hope. Belle talks about being miserable over John for weeks and now they got this miracle, so he will too. Shawn thanks her but feels two miracles is too much to hope for. Nearby, Julie asks what Doug III has to say and tells him to be brief. Doug III realizes that him being in Salem makes her unhappy, so he’s saving up to leave town right after he buys back her necklace. Julie questions how since she understands Melinda sold it and nobody knows where it is. Doug III confirms that’s true but says he’s spending every spare minute to track it down and then he will save every spare penny to buy it back. Julie tells him not to bother. Doug III feels he needs to make this right. Julie tells him that she’d love to have the necklace back but not from him. Julie tells him to save his money as all she wants from him is to get out of her life forever. Shawn and Belle come over to ask if everything is alright and what is going on here. Julie says it’s nothing they can do anything about. Julie cries to Shawn and Belle that she is praying hard for both of their fathers. Julie then exits the Pub.

Leo asks if Chad has some inside insight on what happened to Philip. Chad says he needs to check something out. Chad tells Leo to keep at it and they’ll meet up in a couple hours about printing the Philip story. Chad tells Leo good work and says his expectations were low when he hired him, so he’s definitely exceeded them. Leo asks who would’ve thought after everything with Will and Sonny that they would end up on great terms. Chad says he knows from personal experience not to hold on to tightly to the past and you should let someone turn over a new leaf. Leo suggests next time they hug as Chad exits the office.

JJ asks Javi if he’s noticed any tension between Xander and Philip at work. Javi says he hasn’t but he has been running himself rugged for Gabi. Gabi hopes the police department makes better progress than the investigation in to EJ’s shooting. JJ hopes they can solve both cases quickly. JJ tells Gabi that he’s sorry he had to question her. Gabi argues that he didn’t have to, but he made her a suspect because he thinks the worst of her. JJ disagrees and says he’s been knocking himself out trying to prove she’s innocent. Javi decides he’s going to get some air but as he opens the door, Gabi’s daughter Arianna, now 18, arrives and surprises them. Arianna and Gabi embrace as Gabi asks how she even got there. Arianna tells her that her flight got in at 2 and no one was there to pick her up so she took a rideshare. Gabi gets mad at Javi for saying her flight got in at 4 and accuses him of leaving Arianna stranded at the airport. Gabi tells Javi that he had one job while Javi argues that he does several jobs for her. They argue back and forth until Gabi tells Javi that he’s fired. Javi says he quits and storms out. JJ welcomes Arianna home and says he’ll see them later as he then exits.

Chad goes to the DiMera Mansion where EJ asks what brings him by as he thought he’d be swamped by the paper. Chad tells EJ that he just heard Philip was severely beaten up. EJ asks if he’s alright. Chad says he doesn’t know but Philip is in the hospital. Chad then asks EJ if he had something to do with it.

Belle tells Shawn that Julie seemed really upset. Shawn asks Belle if she still keeps in contact with Kevin Lambert. Belle confirms that they did from time to time. Shawn explains that they are trying to track down Kevin’s roommate, Asher Leeds. Belle says she’s heard that name before but she can’t remember where. Shawn urges her to try to remember because this is really important. They sit together as Javi enters the Pub. Belle looks up Asher Leeds and realizes that she defended him in the past on a minor drug charge. Shawn asks what else she can tell him about Asher. Belle says not much really but she will go pull his file and send him what she’s got. Shawn thanks her and tells her how much this means to him.

EJ tells Chad that he resents being accused of this act of violence but questions why he would have anything to do with Philip being beaten. Chad brings up EJ threatening Kate’s sons since he blames Kate for his strain with Johnny. EJ swears he had nothing to do with what happened to Philip. Chad tells EJ he believes him. EJ gets that he had to cover his bases and that he had reason to be suspicious. EJ admits he was upset with Kate when he found out that she told Johnny about what happened between he and Sami, but the more he thought about it, he realized the truth was bound to come out at some point so as much as he wants to blame Kate, the only person he has to blame is himself.

JJ goes to the Horton house and brings Julie her mail. Julie asks how his day was. JJ says it could’ve been better but there was one bright spot which Julie asks about. JJ explains that he was at Gabi’s and as he was about to leave, Arianna walked through the door. Julie says it’s wonderful that she came back and says she must make a point to see her when Gabi is not around. Julie questions what JJ was doing at Gabi’s anyway. JJ says he needed to ask her questions about a police matter. Julie asks who Gabi tried to shoot, strangle, or stab in the back this time. JJ says no one which Julie calls a relief for everybody. Julie hopes that JJ is not seeing Gabi again. JJ doesn’t think Julie has to worry because he’s starting to feel that’s not in the cards. Julie hates to see him hurting but says if he’s really finished with Gabi, she thinks that’s good.

Arianna questions Gabi firing Javi. Gabi complains about Javi leaving her at the airport when she hasn’t seen her in months. Arianna questions Gabi not getting her text that her flight was cancelled due to a tropical storm so she took an earlier flight. Gabi realizes she was on a conference call and missed the text. Gabi apologizes. Arianna says missing the text is okay but what’s not okay is firing Javi for something that’s not his fault, so she owes him a major apology.

Leo joins Javi at the Pub and asks him what Gabi did now. Javi responds that Gabi fired him so he quit which Leo questions. Javi guesses he’s a serial quitter as it’s what he always does when things get tough, like in the fire department when he was on the cusp of his dreams. Leo knows he’s not ready to talk about that. Javi asks if he’s not going to use his vulnerable state to pry. Leo admits he may have searched it online but nothing came up. Leo says he just cares about him and wanted to know what had him so upset. Javi tells Leo that he will tell him the truth and reveals that when he came out, he was out. Leo argues that it’s illegal if he was fired for being gay. Javi says not exactly so Leo asks what happened. Javi says it took him a long time to come to terms with who he was. Javi is surprised he never talked to him about this before, but he was afraid he would see him as a coward. Leo says he would never and he’s glad they are talking about it now. Javi explains that even after coming out to his father, he still had a lot of doubts, especially considering how badly his mom took it and how people would react, so he was determined not to tell anyone at the firehouse but the longer he worked there, the more he felt like a fraud and a fake version of himself. Leo asks how they found out then. Javi responds that he became friends with a straight guy and they went out one night for a couple beers, so he told him and trusted him to keep it between them but he didn’t and it got around quickly. Javi figured it’d be an uphill battle to be accepted that way but he hoped sooner or later, no one would care and it wouldn’t be a big thing anymore. Javi adds that unfortunately, their captain was a big time homophobe who made his life miserable by mocking him and treating him like dirt until one day he couldn’t take it anymore. Javi is ashamed to say that he walked away. Leo tells Javi that he has nothing to be ashamed about at all as no one deserves to be treated that way. Leo adds that he knows a thing about being tormented by people who are supposed to protect you. Javi feels he should’ve stood up for himself and his right to be there and who he is, but instead, he let that ignorant bastard win. Javi wishes he didn’t give up on his dream and that he was strong enough to stick it out. Doug III comes out from the back, so Belle reminds him about her chicken soup order, so he goes back to check on that.

Gabi promises Arianna that when Javi comes home, she will apologize but right now, she doesn’t want anything to spoil the joy of having her home. Gabi asks Arianna wants to do for her birthday. Arianna decides she wants to dial it back, just have dinner and chill because it’s been a long day and she’s wiped. Gabi agrees to whatever she wants for her birthday and she’s just so happy to have her home as they hug.

Chad tells EJ that he is happy for the new EJ. EJ asks Chad if he and Cat have gone on their date yet. Chad says not yet. EJ asks if they are still trying to come up with potential activities. Chad informs him that they are going skydiving which he brought up as a joke but she thought it would be a great idea. EJ notes that he doesn’t seem happy about it. Chad admits he’s scared of heights. EJ jokes that he has no reason to be nervous because he and Cat will be taking the plunge together.

Julie is confused by finding a brochure for skydiving in the mail and sees that it’s addressed to Chad. Julie wonders what Chad has to do with skydiving. JJ guesses it has to do with his charity auction date with Cat which Julie questions. JJ explains that EJ bid on Cat, but Chad swooped in to rescue her from his evil brother. Julie questions why Chad can’t just go bowling with her and if he has to take her skydiving. JJ says he doesn’t know but remarks that if Chad is going skydiving with Cat, he kind of hopes her parachute doesn’t open.

Outside the Pub, Shawn calls Steve and tells him that he might have a lead on Kevin’s roommate and is having some files pulled. Shawn tells Steve that he’ll be in touch and hangs up as Belle comes out from the Pub. Belle tells Shawn that she will go take the soup to Tate and then she will go check on Philip at the hospital. Shawn thanks her for the help and for the moral support. Belle hugs Shawn and tells him to keep the faith as she then walks away.

Alex meets with Kate at the Brady Pub and says he has a big project in mind that he can’t pull off without her. Kate says he has her interest and asks what it is.

Jada wakes up at Stephanie’s apartment. Stephanie gives her coffee and says she’s surprised Jada is up early after working so late. Jada talks about EJ’s shooting being one dead end after the next so she was hoping for a big break in the case. Jada then gets a call from Shawn, who asks if she can get somebody to cover his shift because he’s not feeling so hot today so he doesn’t feel like he’d be much use to the squad today. Jada tells him to get his rest and back to 100%. Shawn thanks her. Jada asks if there’s any news on Bo. Shawn says there’s been a small setback but they are holding out hope. Jada says she’ll be praying for him as they hang up. Shawn tells Steve that he hates lying to Jada. Steve explains that they don’t want to incriminate anyone or tip off anyone that Dr. Russell’s drug was stolen. Shawn says they better find it because it might be Bo’s only chance of survival.

Kevin remains outside and calls Philip, leaving a message that he doesn’t know how much longer he can wait for him and questions him not answering the phone.

At the Kiriakis Mansion, Sarah and Maggie put Victoria down for a nap. Maggie mentions being surprised that Xander left Sarah stranded at the hospital. Sarah thinks he was rattled after being told that Dr. Russell’s drug was stolen since it was the only reason he was interested in buying the hospital. Maggie guesses that explains EJ’s interest in the hospital too. Maggie asks if Sarah thinks EJ stole the drug. Sarah says that Xander seems to think so, but she has the feeling that he had another lead when he rushed off to try to salvage the situation. Sarah hopes that Xander is not getting himself in to trouble.

Philip crawls on the floor of his hotel room with a bloody nose after being punched by Xander. Xander kicks him for cheating him out of his inheritance and for lying to him for months. Xander kicks him again and says Philip screwed over the company and cost Bo his life. Philip tries to say he doesn’t understand. Xander declares that Philip sealed his fate, so nothing he says can save him as he kicks him on the ground again.

Jada tells Stephanie how grateful she is for her kindness and having her support. Stephanie knows how tough it’s been since her break up with Rafe. Stephanie says she appreciates having her around too, especially with what’s going around with Bo. They agree that they are lucky to have each other to lean on. Stephanie then realizes her manuscript is missing and asks Jada if she’s seen it but she hasn’t. Stephanie says it was just a personal project she came across when cleaning out her office. Jada asks where she remembers seeing it last. Stephanie says it was right there as Alex was looking at it before bed, so she wonders where it could’ve went.

Alex presents Kate with Stephanie’s novel “One Stormy Night” and says one of his friends wrote it but it’s unpublished. Alex adds that his friend wants to remain anonymous because some of the content is a little racy. Kate begins reading it and agrees it’s definitely racy. Alex adds that it’s well-written, funny, and touching so he feels there’s a market for something like this. Kate confirms sometimes they become best sellers. Alex thinks this has the chance to be one with the right editor. Kate guesses that’s where she comes in. Alex says Kate produced hit after hit for Titan Publishing, most of which were romance novels. Kate calls that a lifetime ago. Alex asks her to take a look at it as he would appreciate honest feedback. Kate questions what she would get out of doing this for him.

Steve reveals to Shawn that Marlena called him while he was on the phone and John is on a flight back home tonight. Shawn says he’s so relieved for everyone involved. Steve says now they need to have a happy ending for their family too. They talk about being on to something with Kevin Lambert who Shawn also knows from high school. Shawn says Kevin used his key card right before they got there while Steve points out that Dr. Russell had given his team the weekend off. Shawn says Kevin has to be who they heard leaving the lab right before they walked in and the one who stole the drug, but he doesn’t understand why. Steve suggests he give Kevin a call.

Kevin continues pacing outside when he gets a call from Jeffrey. Kevin ignores it and calls Philip again, leaving another message that he’s worried Jeffrey might be onto him so he needs him to take the drug off his hands now.

Xander kicks Philip on the ground and calls him a pathetic loser who destroys everything he touches. Xander talks about how Victor could have cleared his name but he faked his death and sent him away because he was ashamed of him and didn’t leave him a damn thing. Xander complains that Philip destroyed everything between them and the family. Xander says God knows who else was forced to cover for him. Xander says Victor sent him away because he couldn’t stand to look at him and he can’t either. Xander declares that he never wants to look at him again. Xander goes to walk out but Philip says Sarah’s name, so Xander stops and asks what about Sarah.

Kate tells Alex that editing was her career so she knows coverage of a manuscript is very time consuming. Alex assures that he will pay her for her time, but if the novel is as good as he thinks, he wants to use it to relaunch Titan Publishing’s book division with Kate at the helm. Kate admits she didn’t know what to expect when he reached out and it certainly wasn’t this but he’s given her a lot to think over. Alex questions what there is to think over, feeling it’s a win-win. Kate says not to get ahead of themselves and she will let him know what she thinks of the book. Kate wants to make sure it’s not a scam as she brings up Jack once getting ahold of a book she wrote about her life and taking credit for it, so she wants to make sure Alex’s friend isn’t making money on someone else’s content. Alex explains that his friend is only embarrassed by the book’s sexual content.

Stephanie wonders where her manuscript could’ve gone. Jada offers to stay and help her look for it but Stephanie says she’s sure it’s here somewhere. Stephanie suggests they go out for breakfast instead which Jada accepts. Stephanie suggests going to the Bakery. Jada thinks Chanel would appreciate their support. Stephanie says her loyal customers have come to her defense, so she wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a line.

Shawn tells Steve that something feels off as Kevin was never one to start trouble growing up. Steve suggests if he is in trouble, maybe he’d be open to Shawn throwing him a lifeline. Shawn decides to find out and calls Kevin. Shawn knows this seems out of the blue but asks to meet today. Kevin says today is no good as he’s sort of in the middle of something. Shawn asks if that has to do with Versavix. Kevin questions how he knew about that. Shawn tells Kevin that if he’s in any kind of trouble, he can help him. Kevin brings up Shawn being a cop. Shawn tells Kevin that he’s his friend and he can keep the cops and Dr. Russell off his back, but he needs him to meet today in the town square. Shawn says he’ll be waiting and hangs up.

Sarah tries calling Xander but it goes straight to voicemail. Maggie encourages that it could just be bad service or another call while Sarah worries that he could be up to no good as she has such a bad feeling because of how angry Xander has been. Maggie says she doesn’t blame him since he’s been forced to play nice with Philip. Sarah thought a nice relaxing weekend would help Xander get rid of some of that anger. Maggie hopes she’s not blaming herself. Sarah assures that she isn’t but she did feel so guilty and asks if Xander would be so caring towards her if he knew that she helped keep Philip’s secret for all these months. Maggie thought she made peace with the fact that no good could come from telling Xander the truth now. Sarah agrees as she doesn’t think Xander could ever get over a betrayal like that.

Xander asks Philip what about his wife and tells him to say what he has to say. Philip responds that Sarah knew. Xander questions what Sarah knew but Philip passes out from the pain of being attacked.

Kate tells Alex that she has to meet Philip so she will read the manuscript and then they can meet again. Alex asks Kate not to tell anyone about it until they are sure about it. Alex assures that he wants to share the author’s work and talent with the world but Kate’s the expert. Kate says she does have an eye for these things and guesses that Alex does too as she walks away.

Shawn and Steve wait for Kevin in the town square. Jada and Stephanie approach them instead. Jada thought Shawn was sick. Shawn says he’s definitely not feeling well and claims that Steve picked up a prescription for him. Stephanie invites them to join them at the Bakery. Shawn says he doesn’t have an appetite while Steve says he has to get back to work. Stephanie and Jada tell Shawn to feel better while Stephanie tells Steve that she’ll see him later. Stephanie and Jada walk away. Steve worries that Jada didn’t buy Shawn’s story. Shawn hopes that once they clean this mess up, he can explain everything to her. Kevin then arrives to meet them. Shawn introduces him to Steve, who says it’s better to have a private investigator than the cops involved. Shawn tells Kevin that they can help him, but only if he tells them everything.

Sarah tells Maggie that she’s going to drive herself crazy waiting for Xander to come home. Sarah then asks Maggie to keep an eye on Victoria because she’s going to work. Maggie argues that she just left the hospital. Sarah says she has a mound of paperwork that she can catch up on and that is better than sitting her, fearing the worst. Sarah tells Maggie to have Xander call her if he comes home because she wants some answers and who knows what else he is keeping from her. Sarah then decides she’s a giant hypocrite for being upset that Xander is keeping something from her when she kept a secret from him for months. Maggie argues that it’s not the same since she kept the secret to protect her marriage and family. Sarah says she should’ve known something was off when Xander was asking about the cure for Sepsis. Sarah thought he was just concerned for Bo but he was pumping her for information in some battle against EJ. Maggie points out that it seems like something Victor would have done.

Xander tries to wake Philip up. Xander then tries to check his pulse and sees Philip’s phone. Xander then runs out of the room. Kate arrives and opens Philip’s door and screams when she finds Philip unconscious inside.

Jada asks Stephanie who the guy is with Steve and Shawn. Stephanie responds that she has no clue as she’s never seen him before. Alex then joins Stephanie and Jada, so Stephanie invites him to join them in eating. Jada then gets a text about a situation at the hospital and has to go, so she gives her bagel to Alex. Stephanie guesses the police commissioner’s work is never done. Jada agrees that there’s always something going on in this town as she walks away.

Kate arrives to the hospital as paramedics bring Philip in on a stretcher. Sarah is there and asks what happened and if he’s been unconscious long. Kate says he was like this when she found him and says she has to save her son as Philip is brought to the ER.

Alex and Stephanie eat together in the town square. Alex notes Shawn and Steve nearby and suggests inviting them to join them. Stephanie explains that she and Jada already did, but that was before the other guy got there. Alex recognizes Kevin from seeing him at the Bistro last night with Philip. Xander walks by, so Alex excitedly greets him and asks where he’s been all morning since he sent him an e-mail about the pitch for the hospital board meeting. Xander says he hasn’t got a chance to look at it. Alex hopes they have a few minutes to discuss some ideas today. Xander is afraid not and says their plans have hit a snag. Xander says he can’t really talk about it right now and rushes off, leaving Stephanie wondering what that was all about. Alex says he has no idea. Kevin asks Shawn and Steve how much they know about Versavix. They respond that it’s worth a fortune and was stolen from Jeffrey’s lab. Shawn questions not reporting it to the police. Steve explains that Kayla allowed them to recover the drug without police involvement. Shawn explains that the drug may be Bo’s only chance of survival since he is dying of Sepsis. Kevin says he’s so sorry. Shawn admits that’s why he broke in to the lab. Steve questions admitting that but Shawn insists that he and Kevin go way back, so he can trust him. Shawn adds that they didn’t succeed because someone beat them to it, so they know Kevin went to the lab seconds before them. Shawn asks Kevin to be straight with him as he asks if has the drug. Kevin responds that he did, but now he does not.

Jada goes to the hospital and tells Kate that she’s so sorry as she came to the hospital but had no idea it was Philip until she talked to the paramedics. Kate asks who could’ve done this. Jada assures they will find out and asks Kate if she’s up to answering a few questions which she agrees to. Jada asks if Philip was unconscious when she found him. Kate confirms they were supposed to have breakfast but he didn’t show up, so she went to his room and found him lying there, bleeding and unconscious. Kate talks about not seeing anyone but she’s glad the press didn’t get wind of it or any of his many enemies. Jada asks if she has any idea who would do this to him. Kate responds that the one person that comes to mind is his brother, Xander Kiriakis.

Stephanie comments on Alex barely touching his food. Alex is worried about Xander saying their plans hit a snag. Stephanie hopes it’s not too big since Kayla would rather have Xander in charge of the hospital instead of EJ. Stephanie then asks if Alex took her manuscript with him this morning because she can’t find it anywhere. Alex reveals that he was making a copy of it to give to the editor he was talking about. Stephanie calls it a relief because she changed her mind about it and was worried that maybe he handed it off to someone without telling her. Stephanie declares that she’s given it a lot of thought and decided she doesn’t want her novel published after all.

Jada asks Kate why Xander would attack Philip. Kate responds that they haven’t been getting along lately. Jada asks her to elaborate. Kate says that Xander didn’t like sharing his inheritance with Philip, so it wouldn’t surprise her at all if he just wanted him out of the picture. Jada points out that they’ve been working together for awhile so she questions what would drive Xander to go after Philip like this now. Kate says she’ll have to ask Xander.

Shawn questions Kevin not having the drug anymore. Kevin calls it a mistake. Steve gives his word that whatever he tells them will remain off the record. Kevin questions them working for Jeffrey. Steve says their main objective is to get the drug and that’s all they want. Kevin says that’s all he wants too, so Shawn asks what happened. Kevin admits that he hated working for Jeffrey and then reveals that Philip called to offer him a job at DiMera Pharmaceuticals. Shawn is surprised to learn Philip is involved. Kevin explains that all he had to do was get a dose of the drug to save Bo and then recreate the formula for Titan. Steve remarks that it couldn’t be altruistic with Philip involved. Kevin says no one would know anything was missing as he was measuring a single dose when he heard them coming in, so he panicked and took the whole batch. Kevin adds that he was supposed to meet Philip to give him the sample for Bo but he never showed up. Shawn asks what happened to him. Kevin says Philip hasn’t answered his calls or messages and then he got Shawn’s call. Kevin adds that knowing Shawn was a cop, he panicked about any of the drugs being found on him. Shawn asks where the drug is now and Steve says they need an answer.

Sarah checks on Philip in the hospital and says she’s expecting major internal injuries. Sarah calls for radiology and x-rays to be setup. Sarah encourages that Philip will be okay and she just hopes that Xander had nothing to do with it.

Alex doesn’t understand as he thought Stephanie wanted to give her book to an editor. Stephanie says she thought about it and it just doesn’t feel right. Alex argues that her book could be a huge hit. Stephanie says it means so much to her that he believes in her, but she doesn’t want people knowing she wrote such a racy book. Alex reminds her about using a pen name but Stephanie feels critics wouldn’t stop until they figure it out and then they’d laugh at her. Alex argues that professionals do this all the time. Stephanie feels the romance genre is looked down on and she can’t risk ruining her career. Stephanie asks Alex not to show her novel to his editor and says she’s made up her mind. Alex reluctantly says that he understands. Shawn asks what Kevin did with the drug. Kevin admits he panicked because he thought Jeffrey was onto him, so he had to get rid of it and gave it to his roommate who works in another lab to figure out away to get it back to Jeffrey’s lab. Shawn says they can work with this and instructs Kevin to call his roommate, say he needs the drug back and then they will take a dose for Bo and figure out a way to get it back to the lab. Steve adds that they will name Kevin’s name out of it as they just want to make this right, so nobody needs to know what they did. Kevin thanks him and says he owes them his life. Shawn hopes that Bo will owe Kevin his. Steve instructs Kevin to make the call as they are running out of time. Kevin calls his roommate, but he’s not picking up.

Xander returns home to the Kiriakis Mansion and begins to put ice on his hand but Maggie walks in and asks what happened. Xander claims that he was in a rush and just tripped. Sarah mentions Maggie telling her that she ran out on her, so she’s very worried about him. Maggie asks what was so important that he had to leave her at the hospital. Xander says a major deal went up in smoke so he had to do damage control. Maggie guesses it’s the Sepsis drug. Xander questions Sarah telling her about that too and asks where she is anyways. Maggie responds that Sarah is at work and asked her to have Xander call her when he got in because she has a lot of questions for him. Xander states that he has a few things he’d like to ask her as well.

Sarah tells Jada and Kate that Philip is critical but stable and not yet awake as he suffered internal bleeding and damage to his organs. Sarah notes that someone beat him within an inch of his life. Sarah and Jada tell Kate that they are so sorry. Jada hates to bring this up now but informs Sarah that Kate has a feeling that Xander may have had a motive so she asks if Sarah knows where she can find him.

Kevin finishes a call with one of his colleagues and informs Shawn and Steve that the drug is still missing which means his roommate has not returned it to the lab yet. Shawn questions where the hell it is then. Steve warns that the clock is ticking and they need that drug to save Bo’s life.

Kevin paces outside and tries calling Philip. Kevin leaves a message that he’s where he told him to meet and questions where the hell he is.

Marlena and Susan Banks have breakfast in the town square. Susan thanks her for taking her out and says she can’t wait to get back to Roger and their cruise around the world now that EJ is on the mend. Susan notes Marlena being distracted and calls out to her. Marlena says she’s sure Roger will be happy to see her too. Susan then realizes she’s going on about her husband while Marlena is on pins and needles about her husband. Susan encourages that it won’t be long. EJ approaches and greets them. Susan questions what EJ is doing strolling around town when he just got out of the hospital. EJ responds that he’s on his way back to the hospital for a routine follow up appointment and just stopped for a cup of tea. Susan invites EJ to join them for breakfast.

Xander sits by Sarah’s side in the hospital and accidentally wakes her up. Sarah notes he sounds upset and asks what’s wrong. Xander responds that it’s his idiot brother Philip and he’s up to something.

Philip is in his room at the Salem Inn and gets a call from Kevin. Philip asks what time he should come pick up the Versavix but Kevin tells him they have a problem.

Steve and Shawn sit with Kayla in her office. Kayla starts to fall asleep so Steve urges her to go home and get some rest while Kayla argues that she’s fine. Steve points out she can barely keep her eyes open. Shawn agrees that she’s exhausted but Kayla declares that she won’t rest until they find out who stole the drug. Steve says they will do that but Kayla says they need to do it now because her brother’s life depends on it.

EJ joins Susan and Marlena for breakfast. Susan comments on moms always looking out for their children. Marlena agrees while glaring at EJ. Susan brings up Belle and asks if she’s going to meet EJ at the hospital. EJ says no and that they are taking things slow. Susan mentions Belle saying she loves EJ and talks about them being perfect for each other, unlike Sami. Susan urges EJ to stop taking it slow and step on the gas. EJ tells her that’s enough. Susan says maybe next time she visits, EJ and Belle will be tying the knot. Marlena then gets upset and asks Susan to stop her yammering.

Sarah asks Xander why Philip would talk to the head of DiMera Pharmaceuticals behind his back. Xander responds that he’s not sure but whatever he’s doing, he’s not going to get away with it this time.

Philip tells Kevin that they have no problem if he got the drug and returned the batch to the lab. Kevin explains that he didn’t get the chance to do that because Dr. Russell beat him to the lab and came back early, so all of the Versavix is gone. Philip says they need to fix this and asks if Jeffrey called the police. Kevin responds that he doesn’t want to involve the authorities.

Kayla questions how it’s possible that none of the security cameras picked anybody up from the lab. Shawn goes over the footage and says there’s nothing and nobody. Steve says it just means whoever stole the drug were there when they were in that same ten minutes. Shawn brings up hearing the emergency exit slam. Shawn says they need to go back to the lab to search the place because the thief must have left a clue. Shawn asks when Jeffrey gets back from the medical conference. Jeffrey then enters the office and announces that someone broke in to his lab and all of the Versavix is gone. Jeffrey then guesses that Kayla already knew that.

Marlena apologizes to Susan. Susan blames her blood sugar as Marlena hasn’t touched her breakfast. Marlena responds that she’s just bothered about EJ and Belle. Susan questions Marlena not being happy about it. Marlena confirms she’s not at all but says that’s no reason to be rude. Susan thinks something else is bothering her and asks if it’s her being insensitive again which EJ questions. Susan explains that first she kept going on about reuniting with Roger and now she’s going on about EJ and Belle being an item while Marlena’s other half is missing. Marlena says that’s not it. Marlena tells Susan that she hasn’t slept and reveals her call from Shane was telling her that Andrew and Paul were about to move in on John’s location. Susan calls that wonderful. Marlena says it’s great and she’s so relieved and happy but so frightened as she just wants to know that John is alright. Marlena prays for John to be alright.

Philip worries about Xander finding out how badly he screwed this up. Kevin asks what about him. Philip says to just sit tight and wait for his text on where to meet while he figures out a way to get them out of this. Kevin questions how. Philip shouts that he just will and tells him to stop asking so many damn questions.

Sarah doesn’t think Xander should jump to conclusions about Philip and suggests it’s possible that he’s just educating himself on DiMera’s different divisions but Xander says there’s not a chance. Sarah knows Xander is still angry at Philip for betraying him but he is still co-CEO and they have managed to pull off this enormous deal, so it’s not out of the question that Philip just wants to get himself up to speed. Xander mentions Philip getting information from Kate since she told him that Titan was making a play for the hospital. Sarah figured he’d find out anyway. Xander says he purposely didn’t tell Philip so he couldn’t screw it up and complains about Philip still getting accolades. Xander hates having to work with him and says he doesn’t know how much longer he can continue doing this. Sarah reminds him they have no choice. Xander says he’s fully aware of what’s at stake but it just feels like Philip is being rewarded for stabbing him in the back. Xander apologizes and says they should be celebrating Sarah getting discharged instead of him going on about his brother again. Sarah says she’s the one that is sorry.

Kayla questions Jeffrey about the break in. Jeffrey tells her not to play dumb as he doesn’t believe her not knowing about the break in. Jeffrey says he knows how desperate Kayla was to save her brother. Shawn introduces himself as Bo’s son and says he came to update Kayla on his condition. Jeffrey apologizes for making assumptions. Kayla asks why she would take all of the drug when she only needed one dose. Kayla argues that if she took it, she would’ve taken the one dose needed and took it to Bo, but she didn’t go anywhere and she swears on Bo’s life that she did not take the drug. Jeffrey can’t believe it as he poured everything he has in to developing the drug and staked his entire career on it’s success. Kayla points out that Shawn is on the police department and suggests he go with Jeffrey to the lab to see what he can find out. Shawn offers to call the department but Jeffrey wants no police and worries that it could derail his research. Steve asks him to let them help him off the books then.

Xander questions what Sarah has to be sorry for. Sarah says for getting sick and making them miss their trip. Xander says the allergic reaction was not her fault. Sarah wishes they could have a do-over. Xander asks why they can’t and says he’s already supposed to be off work so his schedule is clear. Xander suggests they have their mini honeymoon right here in Salem. Sarah jokes that it’s not exactly the romantic getaway he had in mind. Xander says he doesn’t need that to be happy, he just needs to be with her. Xander then asks what Sarah says to spending some quality time together right here at home and work on giving Victoria the sibling they were talking about. Sarah says that sounds great as they kiss.

Susan feels John is going to be okay. Marlena responds that she feels the same way and that John will be coming home to her, safe and sound. EJ says it’s been a treat but he must get to his appointment. EJ says he’ll see Susan back at the house to say farewell. EJ tells Marlena that he is praying for John’s safe return for her and Belle. Marlena thanks him for saying that. Marlena remembers the conversation they were having about EJ’s involvement with Belle and before they were interrupted, she would like to echo what Susan was saying about every parent worrying about their children. Marlena adds that every parent would do everything they could to protect their child. Marlena states that Belle is the apple of John’s eye and he would do anything to protect her and keep her from harm, so she would too. Marlena warns EJ to remember that.

Jeffrey questions how Steve is qualified to help him off the books. Steve notes that Shawn’s a detective while he’s a private investigator. Jeffrey asks where to start. Steve says first they need information and asks about the security tapes. Jeffrey says he didn’t see anything out of the ordinary but an entire tray of test tubes was taken. Shawn points out that even the best security cameras can be hacked. Steve wants the information to interview his staff. Jeffrey questions not even knowing them. Kayla points out that they are her family and assures they can be trusted. Jeffrey agrees to call the lab then to let them know they are coming. Steve and Shawn then exit together. Jeffrey tells Kayla that this is a nightmare. Kayla assures they will get to the bottom of it. Jeffrey then stops and says he thinks he knows who did this and he doesn’t know why he didn’t figure it out sooner. Jeffrey then declares that either Xander or EJ could’ve orchestrated this so they need to talk to them.

Shawn asks Steve who he thinks stole the drug. Steve brings up that both EJ and Xander want to buy the hospital because of this drug. Shawn figures that gives two greedy CEOs reason to take matters in to their own hands. Steve asks why wait for someone to give you a pot of gold when you can steal it. Xander then wheels Sarah out from her room. Steve and Shawn inform them of the drug being stolen. Sarah calls that terrible since Jeffrey had been working on it for years. Shawn remarks that whoever owns the patent could make mint. Xander questions if he’s implying he was behind the break in. Steve warns that he better keep quiet if he wasn’t until they find out who was or else his big investment opportunity could go bust. Xander assures that he and Sarah won’t say anything as Steve and Shawn then walk away. Sarah turns to Xander and question why Shawn and Steve think Xander had something to do with this and questions the investment opportunity. Sarah then realizes that Xander only wants to buy the hospital so he can get his hands on Dr. Russell’s drug. Xander argues that was one of the reasons as they do have to make some money. Sarah says she’s mostly just upset thinking all of the patients that the drug could save from Sepsis and now that could be in jeopardy. Xander argues that Shawn and Steve should be looking at EJ since he wants the drug just as much as he does. Xander swears that he had nothing to do with this and he wants everything about this deal to be above board. Xander doesn’t know who else it could be other than EJ since he only discussed Versavix with a very few select people. Xander then thinks back to Dr. Frame telling him that he had already spoken to Philip. Xander tells himself it couldn’t be. Xander then tells Sarah that there’s something he has to take care of. Xander says he’s sorry to leave her but it’s urgent, so he asks her to call Maggie to come pick her up. Sarah questions where he is going. Xander says they’ll talk about it later and that he loves her as he hurries out of the hospital.

Susan wonders if she should postpone her reunion with Roger since she doesn’t feel right about leaving EJ while his shooter is still out there. Marlena assures that EJ will be fine. Susan wonders who would’ve shot EJ and says at first she was sure it was Gabi. Marlena encourages Susan to go on her cruise and not worry about it but Susan worries about if someone tries to finish EJ off.

Xander storms to Philip’s room at the Salem Inn and tells him that he ran straight over from the hospital. Philip asks what’s wrong. Xander responds that he knows damn well what’s wrong. Philip claims he doesn’t. Xander asks if that’s really how he wants to play this. Xander says he knows Philip has been snooping around DiMera Pharmaceuticals so he obviously found out that he was trying to buy the hospital to get their hands on Versavix. Xander tells Philip that the billion dollar drug has just been stolen and guesses that Philip did this as he calls him a miserable son of a bitch.

Marlena tells Susan that it’s best to leave the investigating to the police. Susan complains that they are moving too slow and should’ve locked someone up by now. Marlena points out that EJ has made a lot of enemies over the years. Susan says she’s unfortunately right that there’s a lot of suspects. Susan then gets a vibe that there is someone Marlena is suspicious of, so she asks who Marlena thinks shot EJ.

Kayla assures Jeffrey that Shawn and Steve will be able to come up with some answers. EJ then walks by so Jeffrey accuses him of doing this.

Steve and Shawn talk outside the lab about the only way in and no one messing with the keypad. Steve concludes that the only people with key cards are those that work there so Shawn realizes it’s an inside job.

Philip asks Xander why he would steal the drug. Xander tells him to cut the crap as he knows he called Dr. Frame and claimed that he told him to, but he doesn’t know how he got the idea in the first place. Philip admits he may have stumbled across some research. Xander accuses him of snooping around the office and finding the research that he left for Alex, laying out how insanely valuable this drug could be. Xander guesses Philip understood why he wanted to bid on the hospital since whoever owns it stands to make a fortune on the drug. Xander believes Philip was going to steal this too and reverse engineer the formula for his own gain. Xander tells Philip to stop trying to deny it because he knows he was behind the break in at the lab. Xander tells Philip to be a man and tell the truth. Philip then admits he stole the drug but says he was only trying to help him and the company. Philip explains that Xander was supposed to be out of town, so he was worried that EJ would get his meeting and the hospital while he intended to cut the hospital out entirely and make Titan billions. Xander argues that he knew they moved things up and still stole the drug. Philip admits it was also for Bo because Versavex may be the only way to save him and he’s on death’s door so he couldn’t pass up the opportunity to save him. Xander warns that Philip is going to join Bo at death’s door because he is going to kill him.

Kayla questions what EJ did with the drug and demands answers. EJ asks what is going on here. Jeffrey explains that the lab was robbed and all of the drug is gone. EJ says he has no idea while Kayla calls this sadistic and blames EJ for if Bo dies.

Marlena tells Susan that she doesn’t know who shot EJ. Marlena then gets a phone call from Paul and steps away to answer, asking if there’s any word. Marlena tearfully thanks him and says she’s so relieved. Marlena says they’ll talk soon and hangs up. Susan comes over to ask if it was about John. Marlena confirms they found John and exclaims that she’s so happy and relieved. Susan says she knew something good would come of this and asks if John is alright. Marlena says that the ISA doctor is going to check him out and Paul said he’s weary and hungry but he’s coming home. Susan is excited but then stops and says it feels like someone just walked over her grave.

Kayla goes to check on Sarah in the hospital. Sarah tells Kayla that Xander just took off, so she was about to call Maggie to come pick her up and take her home. Kayla asks if she knows why Xander bolted. Sarah explains that Steve and Shawn told Xander that Dr. Russell’s drug was stolen and he just took off. Kayla says she will be happy to take Sarah home and asks if she’s okay. Sarah responds that when she sees Xander like this, she just gets really worried.

Steve and Shawn go over a list of every one who accessed the keypad to the lab. Steve points out that one employee was in the lab when it was supposed to be closed and he was there minutes before they got there, named Kevin Lambert.

Kevin paces outside and tries calling Philip. Kevin leaves a message that he’s where he told him to meet and questions where the hell he is.

Xander asks Philip where the drug is. Philip admits he doesn’t know exactly where it is, but it’s all going to work out. Xander asks if he has any idea how important this acquisition is to Titan-DiMera. Xander declares that he’s doing what he should’ve done the second he found out the letter was forged. Philip argues that he doesn’t want to do this. Xander calls this the latest in Philip’s long list of betrayals, proving they cannot co-exist as co-CEOs. Xander declares that he is going to take off his executive cap and return his roots. Xander reminds Philip what he used to do for a living as Victor had him as a mercenary for hire, who hurt people and kill people for money. Xander states that he’s doing this to free himself because he’s shackled to him and forced to pretend they are equal partners when the sight of him makes him physically ill. Xander declares that the only way to remove himsel f from this ludicrous arrangement is to wipe him from the face of the earth, so that’s exactly what he’s going to do. Xander then punches Philip in the face, knocking him out.
