“Blue Bloods: The Tenth Season” Review by Suzanne 8/15/20
This is such a reliable and solid show. It’s basically a police soap opera. The focus is on the family: the Reagans, who stand by each other, even when they’re fighting. Even though this is their 10th season, they’re still going strong. The stories are always intriguing. The audience for this show skews older and more conservative, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a good show that anyone can enjoy.
The best feature is one that celebrates the 200th episode. There are also deleted scenes “Dinner with the Reagans,” which they have on every DVD. This year, they had to do the dinner remotely. It was very interesting to watch. I think any fan of police shows would enjoy this. Even though it’s a soap opera, you shouldn’t feel too lost if you start watching with this DVD.

He’s found a friend and ally in Eddie, his female partner who keeps him on his toes, and has very different reasons than the Reagans for joining the police force. After several years of working together, Jamie and Eddie finally succumbed to their strong feelings for one another and tied the knot.

“The Flash: The Complete Sixth Season” Review by Suzanne 8/30/20
This is my favorite superhero show, and that’s saying a lot because there are many of them (and I watch them all). Every season has been fantastic. The characters and relationships are very well-defined. They sometimes kill off characters and sometimes bring them back (just like most shows nowadays). This year we got a little less of Cisco and a little more of the other characters.
The season was cut a little short, by 3 episodes, thanks to the coronavirus. That makes sense because it didn’t really feel like a typical “Flash” ending at the end of the year. It will be great to see what happens in Season 7 (especially to Iris and Ralph). The show never disappoints with good acting, drama, action and occasional humor.
This is a pretty good DVD collection. There is a special noir version of one of the episodes, and commentary. There is the usual gag reel and deleted scenes, and last year’s San Diego Comic Con panel. It’s worth having if you’re a fan of the show.

“The Good Doctor – Season Three DVD cover” Review by Suzanne 8/10/20
I enjoyed watching all the episodes of this DVD. I don’t watch the show regularly, so I haven’t seen the first two years. It was easy to watch, even though I missed all of those episodes. It’s basically like any hospital show you’ve seen before, such as Grey’s Anatomy, ER, Chicago Hope, Chicago Med, et al. From what I’ve read, they’re very accurate with the medical scenes. It’s mostly a soap opera with medical stories…a little bit like “General Hospital” used to be, before they brought in spies and mobsters. If you buy the foremost conceit of the show, which is that a high-functioning autistic person (Freddie Highmore, who plays Shaun) could become a surgeon, and you don’t think the main character is irritating, then you’ll probably enjoy the show.
The show was developed by David Shore (“House” – another medical show), based upon a Korean series. The stories are very good, and the acting is fabulous. Sure, some of the things that happen might be a little cliché. For instance, every single medical show I’ve ever watched has a scene where some person is trapped under or beneath something, and they seem fine, but then the doctor discovers that if that thing holding them down is lifted, they’ll bleed out and die. That happened in the two-part finale of this season. The ending of the season, and that two-parter, was also pretty predictable. Another story, about a main character dying, did surprise me, though.
In general, it’s very entertaining. Just don’t expect the stories to astound or shock you too much. It’s worth watching, especially if you like hospital dramas, and it has some great actors, and some very attractive people. It’s not the best show on TV, though. It’s a good ensemble show. Even though Highmore is the star, he has a large cast of talented actors to support him, including Hill Harper, Richard Schiff, Nicholas Gonzalez, Antonia Thomas, Christina Chang, Paige Spara, Fiona Gubelmann, Jasika Nicole and Will Yun Lee. They have some great guest-stars, too.
The DVD only has two features: a gag reel, and some deleted scenes. That’s pretty disappointing. Perhaps we can blame the scarce features on the Coronavirus. The series wasn’t cut short for that, though. It has 20 episodes – 2 more than it had the first two seasons. It always ends in March. I was very grateful that they had great closed-captioning and that they had the “Play All Episodes” choice. Some DVD’s don’t do that, which I find annoying. I hope that next time, they can come up with some better extras for the DVD set.

“Batwoman – The Complete First Season” Review by Suzanne 5/20/20
This is a great comic book show, and a good entry into the “Arrowverse” (or whatever they’re calling the superhero shows on The CW now). I’ve enjoyed watching every episode each week. They do a great job with balancing the action and the character development, with a little bit of humor. At first, I tried to compare it with “Gotham,” but it’s a very different show. However, it does have certain qualities that are similar to that show. It can be very twisted, bizarre and wacky at times (particularly the villains).
The season ending with some shockers – especially the reveal of Bruce Wayne’s lookalike. After the season ended, it was revealed that star Ruby Rose would not be returning as Kate Kane. This is a terrible disappointment because she did such a great job in the role. She will definitely be missed. I hope that the person that replaces her as Batwoman (not as Kate Kane) will be just as good. I have to wonder how this will affect the rest of the show, which was built around Kate’s father, sister, enemies, girlfriends, etc.
The DVD is just as good as the series. I’m reviewing the Blu-ray here. There is a lack of extras, however. Perhaps that’s because of the pandemic? I don’t know. The only features are “The Best of DC TV’s Comic-Con Panels San Diego 2019” and deleted scenes. That sure isn’t enough. I hope that future versions (perhaps the complete set) will have a lot more than that.

“NCIS: The Seventeenth Season” Review by Suzanne 8/8/20
There’s a reason that NCIS is always at the top of the broadcast ratings chart. It has solid stories and interesting characters. The cast changes sometimes, but they always have other fun or interesting people to fill in their places. Of course, Tony and Abby are greatly missed by the fans. Ziva is, too, but we see her a few times this season. It’s great to have her back. I wish Ducky wasn’t retired, but we still see him occasionally. Mark Harmon is getting up there, but he’s still a fine actor.
It’s the 17th season, but in some ways it seems like this show has been on for 25 years. I can barely remember before it started. It’s a reliable series that shows us great drama as well as laughs and mystery. You really can’t go wrong watching any episode of the show. I used to watch it regularly, but I was watching too many shows, which made it hard to keep up, so I stopped watching all the NCIS series (among others). It doesn’t matter, though, because you can start watching again any time and not feel like you missed anything. Maria Bello (Jack) and Wilmer Valderrama (Nick) are fine recent additions. I’m glad that they added some more people of color, like Walderrama and Diona Reasonover (Kacie). NCIS always changes with the times and keeps up on what’s new in the world – even though it’s audience is most likely to be seniors over 50, they do get a fair share of people 18-34 watching.
I really like the teasing romance between Gibbs and Jack. I hope they carry that further. His friendship with the neighbor kid was also very heartwarming. Nick and Eleanor (Emily Wickersham) also have a fun will-they-or-won’t-they kind of friendship. There was a lot of great action this season, too, of course. You can easily watch this without having to “catch up” on previous seasons.
The extras are good. They have two episode-specific features and two main ones. “Other Times. Other Lives” is about the episode “Epherema” in which they go through an old man’s letters and other things to learn the origin of a coin. The actors play the parts of the man and others in the 70’s, which is fun. It’s great to see them as other characters, and it’s clear they had fun with it. “Hallowed Ground: The Arizona” is about the last episode of the season, “The Arizona.” Christopher Lloyd plays an eccentric old guy who steals a couple’s purple heart (from their late daughter). He wants to be buried among the dead at the Pearl Harbor monument. One of the things that makes this episode interesting is how Gibbs makes him face what happened way back then. It wasn’t planned to be the series’ last episode of the season, but it worked out to be, due to the coronavirus. There is a feature about the making of the season, and another one about Ziva’s return. Make sure you watch the episodes first because the features will have spoilers.
This would make a great gift for anyone! Put it on your holiday gift list.

“EVIL: Season One” Review by Suzanne 6/25/20
This is a good show, which isn’t surprising, since it’s written by the same writers that make “The Good Fight” and made “The Good Wife” (husband and wife team Michelle and Robert King) You might be surprised that the writers, who are so good with legal and political shows, would do a horror show. That means you forgot their previous CBS show “Braindead,” which was a horror-political-satire back in 2016. Sadly, that one didn’t last longer than a year. In part, I think it’s because it was a little gross, and in part, it tried to do too many things at once. Not say that there isn’t some humor in “EVIL” because there is plenty. It’s mostly serious, though.
“EVIL” is about a team of three – David, an ex-journalist, now training to be a priest (Mike Colter); Kristen, a psychologist (Katja Herbers) and Ben, the tech guy (Aasif Mandvi). The team investigates events that may be spiritual, such as possessions or miracles. David is a believer, of course. Ben is a skeptic. Kristen is somewhere in between. She isn’t sure what to think. Most of the show is seen through her eyes. The Catholic church pays for them to investigate these possible demon- or angel-involved events. The marvelous Christine Lahti plays Kristen’s mom. The show gets more interesting when we see the flaws of the characters. It can also be creepy and scary, like any good horror show.
Make no mistake, this is a show about the supernatural. In the very first episode, we meet Leland (the wonderful Michael Emerson), who is either the devil or working for him. Kristen is visited by a demon named George in her dreams. Each episode has its own event, but there is also a larger story arc here, involving 60 demons. As you watch more episodes, you learn more about the story arc. I’m not saying it’s a perfect. There are some things in the show that don’t make a lot of sense. For instance, in the first episode, Leland steals her therapists’ notes and then uses them against her with the criminal she’s been analyzing (in her previous job, working for the D.A.). So why doesn’t she press charges against him? Her therapist saw the guy and could identify him. They merely glossed over it in the second episode, with the D.A. saying that Leland explained his account was hacked. At the end of another episode, a man they have been investigating jumps off the roof. They never mentioned that again. Sometimes the characters do things that just make me scream at the TV, “Why are you doing that? Stupid!” but not too often.
It’s compelling drama, fun horror (and sometimes very scary), and well worth watching, despite a few flaws. I’m very glad to have the DVD because I didn’t watch the show regularly when it was on TV. I’m glad it got renewed for a second season, too. If you’re very religious, especially Catholic, then you may not like it. You’ll have to watch it and judge for yourself. I’m sure it would be extra fun to watch this during Halloween. Some of the episodes are very scary, such as the Christmas episode, or the one where David is in the hospital. The show really exploits our fears, like things in our ears, or creepy children, or being in the hospital.
There are a few great extras. First, they have deleted scenes for many of the episodes. There are also two nice features. One is “Season One: Genesis” and the other is “Does Evil Exist?” The first talks about the show and its background. The second is very interesting and a bit philosophical. You should definitely watch this DVD.

“FRONTLINE: Amazon Empire: The Rise and Reign of Jeff Bezos” Review by Suzanne 5/20/20
I have to confess that I love Amazon. I started online in 94 and started shopping as soon as I could, on Amazon and other places. I also started in their affiliate program (I’m still on there, although it doesn’t pay that much). I’ve been shopping on Amazon in 1997 and spend hundreds of dollars there every week. I even wrote a paper for my class this past spring about it. I knew about some of the drawbacks of the site; how they treated their employees. This documentary, however, shows me that there is even more to know.
One thing that Amazon does well is take care of its customers. They are rare in that sense. As it says in the doc, Amazon puts customer care over everything else. This is why they have that customer loyalty. I think some people might be shocked if they watch this documentary, though. Some of their business tactics are pretty underhanded. Part of the reason Amazon thrives is that they always try new things, and they treat their customers well. If more companies did that, then they would give Amazon more competition.
You should enjoy watching this. Some of it the stuff they claim about Jeff Bezos is scary. You have to decide for yourself whether it’s worth it to keep shopping there or not.

“East Lake Meadows – A Public Housing Story” Review by Suzanne 5/20/20
This is very educational. As someone who grew up in the 70’s, I enjoyed watching their old films and hearing about life in the public housing. I had heard about Cabrini Green and some other public housing places before and always wondered how the residents could let their homes get so filthy and filled with drugs and graffiti. Now after watching this, I know how wrong I was to think that way. The residents had no money, and the city was supposed to be taking care of the grounds and repairs of the houses. They didn’t, so the places went to ruin. That’s just sad, and another disgusting part of our history when it comes to treatment of the poor (especially poor and black).
They did a good job showing what went on back then, with photos, testimony and some videos. It’s too bad that so many people were forced out. This was done by Ken Burns, but it’s not one of his really long documentaries. It’s definitely worth watching.

Ken Burns Presents: East Lake Meadows
In 1970, the Atlanta Housing Authority opened East Lake Meadows, a public housing community on the edge of the city. Over the next 25 years, many thousands of low-income Atlantans, mostly African American, would call it home. Shoddy construction and a lack of funding left the project and surrounding landscape in disrepair and led to a rapid decline in the quality of life. As public housing in America became increasingly stigmatized, and a crack epidemic overwhelmed East Lake Meadows, the neighborhood became nearly uninhabitable, but residents nonetheless found ways to overcome violence and neglect, raise kids, find work, and create moments of joy. In the mid-1990s, Atlanta bulldozed East Lake Meadows to make way for new mixed-income housing, as government and philanthropic funds poured into the area in an effort to create a thriving community.
Through the stories of the former residents, East Lake Meadows: A Public Housing Story gives voice to some of the most marginalized people in our society and raises critical questions about how we have created concentrated poverty and limited housing opportunity for African Americans, and what responsibility we have as a people to ensure decent housing for our most vulnerable citizens.

“Blood Sugar Rising” Review by Suzanne 5/20/20
This was very interesting and informative. I think everyone who is pre-diabetic or loves someone with diabetes should watch it. For those of us who already have diabetes, we probably know most of the information already. Still, I did learn some things. I didn’t know that you could be thin and young, and still get diabetes. I knew diabetes was an epidemic in this country, but I didn’t realize how bad the numbers are. I didn’t know that 10% of us have it. That’s very sad and disturbing.
Until the federal and state governments really work together on this, nothing is going to change. There needs to be free diabetes medicine and supplies for everyone. There needs to be much more nutrition information in the schools, especially with regards to sugar. Schools should not have soda and candy machines on campus; nor should the cafeterias be selling junk food. Schools should have plenty of money, too, for making nutritious food for their students. They also need to bring back home economics for all students and really teach them about growing, cooking and eating healthy food. Since most parents today don’t know how to cook or eat in a healthy manner — the schools need to fill in those gaps. Also, the schools could have programs for the parents to learn about these things as well.
Anyway, it was a good program, although hard to watch in some ways. There is also a very good short film with it, all about diabetes in Native American reservations and in Hawaii. I found this particularly interesting, since I used to live in Hawaii.

“World on Fire” Review by Suzanne 4/20/20
This is a great wartime series, which I started watching on PBS. I love Helen Hunt, and she’s outstanding in this. I love Sean Bean and Arthur Darvill from their previous work, too. All of the actors do a great job. One of the young actors looks like a young John Cusack, only more handsome.
It’s got everything you’d want in a wartime drama, plus a little romance and fun. This is what they used to do as miniseries, back in the 70’s and 80’s, with “Winds of War” and things like that. This is more realistic than those were, though. The war still rages by the end of the season, though, so I can’t wait for season 2 to see what happens to the characters.
Make sure that you watch this with the closed-captioning on, especially if you’re American or older because it’s hard to understand, otherwise, with the thick accents.

“Star Trek: Short Treks” Review by Suzanne 5/20/20
I’m a huge “Star Trek” fan, and I had just gotten around to watching “Star Trek: Discovery,” so I was very happy to get this DVD collection of “Short Treks.” I hadn’t seen them before. They’re very good. Some are funny, and some are cute, and some are very poignant. After watching all of these, I had to track down the last one, “Children of Mars,” which is not on this DVD. It aired much later, so that’s probably why. It’s very good and should win an Emmy, IMHO. Scifi rarely wins Emmys, though.
You should definitely watch “Star Trek: Discovery” before watching these because otherwise you might be a little confused because the characters are from that show. Too bad they didn’t make any Short Treks for all the other Star Trek series!!! Those would have been fantastic to watch.
There are a lot of features on the DVD’s, too, such as “The Making of Short Treks.” I especially enjoyed the tribbles episode and behind-the-scenes feature, not only because I’m a long-time Star Trek fan, but also because I’ve interviewed David Gerrold before.
This DVD would make a great gift for any Star Trek fan. I hope they come out with more of them next season.

The Beverly Hillbillies: The Official Fifth Season Season five of The Beverly Hillbillies finds the sturdy Clampett 
clan — Jed (Buddy Ebsen), Elly May (Donna Douglas), Jethro (Max Baer Jr.), and Granny (Irene Ryan) — still retaining their mountain-grown values and essential decency despite Jed’s millionaire status and the family’s luxurious Beverly Hills surroundings. Two of the season’s best plotlines are characteristically manifested in story arcs, spread out over several successive episodes. In the first, Jed is targeted for blackmail by a pair of slick con artists, played by Leon Ames and Gayle Hunnicutt. This is followed by a farcical escapade in which Granny forces a trained gorilla (actually a costumed stunt man, played by George Barrows) to take over the chores at the Clampett estate. Otherwise, season five follows the pattern established in season four of enlivening the traditional Beverly Hillbillies nonsense with choice guest-star appearances. Veteran comic actor Charles Ruggles makes a return appearance as Mr. Farquhar, the skirt-chasing father-in-law of Jed’s banker Milburn Drysdale (Raymond Bailey). Gloria Swanson plays herself in another episode, wherein the Clampetts, acting under the misapprehension that Swanson is broke, bankroll her “comeback” in a brand new silent movie (and no, William Holden did not write the screenplay). And in the episode “The Indians are Coming,” John Wayne makes what must have been the best-publicized “surprise” guest appearance in TV history! The Librarians Season Four There can be only one, after all. The Handmaid’s Tale: Season 2 The Handmaid’s Tale is an American dystopian drama web television series 
created by Bruce Miller, based on the 1985 novel of the same name by Margaret Atwood. It was ordered by the streaming service Hulu as a straight-to-series order of 10 episodes, for which production began in late 2016. The plot features a dystopian future following a Second American Civil War wherein a totalitarian society subjects fertile women, called “Handmaids”, into child-bearing servitude.
The first three episodes of the series premiered on April 26, 2017; the subsequent seven episodes aired on a weekly basis every Wednesday. In May 2017, the series was renewed for a second season which premiered on April 25, 2018.
The Handmaid’s Tale has received widespread critical acclaim and its first season won eight Primetime Emmy Awards from thirteen nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series. It is the first show produced by Hulu to win a major award as well as the first series on a streaming service to win an Emmy for Outstanding Series.[3] It also became the first streaming series to win the Golden Globe Award for Best Television
