THIS STILL NEEDS EXTENSIVE EDITING!
[somber music]
[phone beeps]
Ask me how my morning is going. All right, I’ll tell you. It’s going superbly. Want to know why? Because Alex agreed to go along with Sarah’s story– you know, the one about me and Stephanie hooking up behind his back? [sighs] So, once again, Xander is none the wiser that our father’s letter is a forgery. Um, hello? Did you hear what I said?
Hmm?
Jeez, Mom, I’m telling you how we narrowly avoided going to prison for fraud. What could be more important than that?
EJ.
Look, we’ve been over this. EJ DiMera is not going to hurt me. I’m not afraid of him.
Nor should you be, because he won’t be coming after you. And he won’t be going after my other sons, as a matter of fact.
[clears throat] [tense music]
[gentle music]
Hey, sleepyhead.
[giggles]
[groans]
I snuck out early, got your faves– some pastries and coffee from Sweet Bits.
Oh. I hope you brought extra coffee.
Extra coffee? For who?
For me.
No! No, please, no, no.
Steph, hey, hey, it’s okay. It’s okay. You were just having a bad dream.
Oh.
It’s okay.
Oh, right. Yeah, just a–just a bad dream.
You’re fine. You’re fine, babe. But it obviously upset you a whole lot. Do you remember what it was about? [dramatic music]
Oh, there you are.
Come here.
Mm. Oh, Xander, you’re all sweaty.
Yeah, we both know how much that turns you on.
Yeah, but not after a workout.
To which I had to add an extra hour to work off all the stress of everything that happened yesterday.
Oh, you mean with Philip and Stephanie?
And Alex, poor bugger. I still can’t believe those two betraying him like that, shagging behind his back.
Yeah, I know. It was a, uh– it was a shock to all of us. But, you know, you heard Alex. I think that, um–I think that he and Stephanie are… going to be able to move past it.
[sputters] I have a hard time believing anybody can just move past something like that… especially not my cousin. But I just– I really hope that it doesn’t negatively impact our working relationship– you know, Philip and Alex being at odds like that. I don’t want anything to mess up our plans to seize control of DiMera, not when we’re so close.
Baby, there’s something I need to tell you.
What is it?
Okay, let me give you a hint. I just spoke to Stephanie at the hospital.
Okay.
O– And I know about Vivian and the forged letter. Don’t try to deny it. I’m not going to believe you.
Sarah… [clears throat] Assuming you’re here alone and Xander is not waiting outside with a baseball bat… [sighs] I’m guessing that means you haven’t told your husband yet.
No.
And why is that, Sarah?
Because we all know that when I tell Xander, he won’t rest until Philip’s head is on a spike.
Sarah, darling, what– what is it need to tell me?
I’ve been lying to you.
[soft orchestration] announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “Days of Our Lives.”
[dramatic music]
[yawns] Morning.
[sighs] It was nothing.
Didn’t seem like nothing to me. It was a sex dream, wasn’t it?
Look, I’m fine now, okay?
Oh.
So can we just drop it, please?
Were you having sex with Philip? Is that why you don’t want to talk about it? Were you having sex with him?
No! And since you obviously won’t drop it, Philip wasn’t even in my dream at all, okay? It was you and Sarah.
Sarah?
I walked in on the two of you… in bed.
Lying to me? Darling, what on Earth would you have to lie to me about?
It’s–it’s about the secret that Philip and Stephanie have been keeping.
Well, it’s not exactly a secret anymore, at least not to us– it’s all out in the open. What else could you know about it?
So you agree… that this is the right decision?
It doesn’t really matter what I think.
No, it does, Steph. It does matter what you think, because I am asking you to keep this secret, too. And if you don’t, it doesn’t matter what I think.
Will you do that?
Sarah, darling, you’re starting to scare me a bit. What–what is it?
I knew about the affair.
What?
I knew that Philip was– was sleeping with Stephanie.
This happened last night.
Yes, and it was all over the news. I’m surprised you didn’t see it.
I was up till 3:00 a.m. on a conference call with Titan Malaysia last night. Sort of slept in.
And they really have no idea who shot him?
No idea. Although I believe that half of Salem would probably like to shake the hand of whoever it was. Actually, it’s a shame they didn’t kill the son of a bitch. Oh, what? You know how I feel about the man.
Yeah, I do. And it makes me wonder… Mom, did you do this? Did you shoot EJ?
[scoffs]
Morning. How did you sleep?
A lot better than that park bench, that’s for sure.
Still, the floor couldn’t have been all that comfy.
It was fine, with all the blankets that you gave me. And, Holly, I’m really grateful that you let me stay here, but I’m worried that you’re going to get in trouble.
I won’t. I told you that already.
But your grandma and Julie are really close. What if Ms. Kiriakis finds out and–
She won’t, okay? And even if my grandma does, I can handle her, okay?
Okay. Well, what about Tate?
What about him?
Seriously? You don’t think your boyfriend might have a bit of an issue with me staying here like this? Sleeping in your room?
Yeah, well… even if he does have an issue, it wouldn’t be my problem anymore. Uh… Tate and I… we’re done. I broke up with him. [dramatic music]
[knock at door]
Oh, hi.
Have you heard?
Uh… have I heard what?
EJ DiMera was shot last night in his own home.
Are you serious? Sophia– No, no, no, my little sister lives there. Do you know, was anyone else hurt?
No, the news said that everyone else in the house was okay. But EJ had to get rushed to the hospital, and they put him in a medically induced coma. He’s in critical condition.
[sighs] Oh, my God. I mean, I’m hardly EJ’s biggest fan, especially after the whole adoption fiasco, but, still, this is Johnny’s father and Rachel’s uncle.
And Holly’s stepdad. That is, before her mom divorced him anyway.
Yeah. Do you think she knows?
Well, it’s all over the news, so I don’t know how she could have missed it.
Yeah, I mean, I just– I wonder how she’s taking it. I mean, I know she was furious at EJ over what he did to Eric and Nicole, pretending to be Jude’s father. But… even so, it can’t be easy for her.
Well, maybe at least now some things might be going a little easier for us.
What do you mean?
I mean that EJ DiMera getting shot could be the answer to our prayers.
Wow. My own son thinks I tried to kill a man.
Hey, no need to shout it.
Oh, I’m so sorry. What level of volume should I use when I’m being accused of murder?
I didn’t accuse you, Mom. It’s just… I know you were freaking out over EJ threatening me and my brothers. So I was just wondering if maybe… you’d taken action, that’s all.
Yeah, because God forbid that a mother should worry when an immoral son of a bitch threatens the lives of her children, right? But, still, I did not shoot that man.
No, but we both know this wouldn’t be the first time you used a gun to take care of an enemy.
I’m sorry, Sarah, darling, but you’re not making any sense. Of course you knew that Philip and Stephanie were sleeping together. I’m the one that told you, remember? You were just as surprised as I was.
I was faking.
You were– Sorry, what?
Well, I-I knew about it before you found out.
But… how?
Stephanie told me.
You had a dream I was having sex with Sarah?
Crazy, right?
I mean, maybe, maybe not. I’m kidding.
Hey!
I’m kidding.
You better be.
Mm. Why would you ever have a dream like that?
I guess… it’s all thanks to this ridiculous lie that she’s made up about me sleeping with Philip behind your back.
Mm.
I’ve been obsessing about it lately.
Yeah, I’m not too thrilled about it either. I mean, I get why Sarah wouldn’t want Xander to know about the real secret that you and Philip were keeping from me. But this whole cover story has me looking like a total simp.
Well, it doesn’t exactly paint me in the most flattering light either, me cheating on you like that.
Then why are we going along with it, seriously? I mean, I get that it would turn Titan upside down… if Xander found out the truth, that… Philip forged this letter basically stealing half of his birthright, but doesn’t Xander have the right to know he’s been duped?
If you’re talking about Vivian, you know damn well that was an accident.
Yeah, well, that isn’t how she remembers it.
Oh, really? So now you’re taking the word of a psychopath over the word of your mother? And for the record, she already paid me back for accidentally shooting her by purposely shooting me in cold blood and then burying me alive.
Yes, but it’s also because of Vivian that I control half of my father’s company, which you and I both agree is a good thing, right? [dramatic music] So back to the subject at hand– because even if you did shoot Vivian by accident…
I did.
Okay, fair point. But you also tried to kill Chloe, Sami, and my father a couple of times. Not to mention the fact that you have been known to carry a gun in the past.
For protection.
Exactly. Protection. Because if there’s one thing the people of Salem know about Kate Roberts-Brady is that she will go to great lengths to protect the people she cares about… especially when it comes to her family.
You’re damn right.
So then you agree, don’t you? It’s not so far-fetched for me to wonder if maybe… just maybe… you gunned EJ down to stop him from hurting the people you love.
Did I just hear you right? You think EJ being gunned down in his own home is a good thing?
No, of course not. My God, I-I hate gun violence, no matter who’s getting hurt. And my heart goes out to his family and all that. But I mean… well, haven’t you at least considered what this could mean for the adoption? My mom said her biggest objection was EJ, uh, that she didn’t want him involved, and now…
Sophia… EJ is in a coma. He’s not dead.
I know, and I know that… it’s horrible that the man was shot, but… Like I said, I feel for him and his family. I’m just–I’m looking for a silver lining here, okay? Which is that assuming that it takes a while for Johnny’s dad to recover, if he does, then my mom shouldn’t have any more problems with Johnny and Chanel adopting the baby. I’m sorry. I know that this is all a little bit messed up.
Uh… to put it mildly.
But aren’t you at least the tiniest bit relieved? I mean, hasn’t the adoption caused us enough troubles? Not to mention troubles for you and Holly.
Yeah, uh, Holly isn’t… really a factor anymore.
What do you mean?
We just broke up. Uh, more accurately, she broke up with me.
Well, the shower’s all yours.
Thanks. So you really broke things off with Tate?
Yep.
Do you mind if I ask what happened?
We just got into this stupid fight. Well, the fight wasn’t stupid. It was just stupid it happened in the first place.
Was it about–
Him snitching on you for stealing Julie’s necklace? Yeah, that was definitely part of it. Really let him have it for that moronic decision, and… let’s just say it ended badly.
Well, why didn’t you tell me any of this when you got home last night?
I don’t know. I didn’t want to rehash it.
You didn’t want to rehash it with me because it’s my fault. I’m the reason you and Tate broke up.
You think we should tell Xander the truth… about the forgery?
I mean, I know there’s a downside to it, like I said. The way it would turn Titan upside down, pitting the brothers against each other. [sighs] But I also know what it’s like to be duped by somebody very close to you.
Yeah, you sure do.
I’m also not crazy about the idea of my cousin thinking I’m some kind of chump who can’t keep my woman satisfied.
Well, trust me, Alex Kiriakis, you keep me plenty satisfied.
Mm. [romantic music] Is that so?
Mm-hmm. But you don’t have to take my word for it.
So… Stephanie told you that… she and Philip were sneaking around behind Alex’s back?
Well, um, she just– she said that she needed to get it off her chest. She needed a confidant. It was, um–it was after one of our fundraiser meetings at the hospital that she opened up to me, and… she said she felt horrible about it.
I don’t understand. Um, why didn’t you tell me about any of this at the time?
I didn’t want to betray Stephanie. She said that she was planning to come clean about it, and she was just– she was just trying to find the right time. So it wasn’t my secret to tell.
Oh, I see.
And that’s… that’s why I wanted you to drop your suspicions about Philip and Stephanie when you came to me at the hospital. It was ’cause I-I knew that you were onto them, and… I just wanted to protect my friend. [dramatic music] Xander… I am so sorry that I lied to you.
I thought it was better if no one knew.
Can you forgive me?
Sarah, uh… are you being serious right now? How could I be mad at you when you were just… protecting your friend, like you said?
[sighs]
I mean, come on, you withholding a bit of prior knowledge about some fling that Philip and Stephanie were having behind Alex’s back, that hardly compares to some of the secrets I’ve kept from you over the years, doesn’t it?
That’s a fair point.
At the end of the day, yes, Alex is family. So is Philip, but… any secret about them– I mean, it’s not going to directly impact either of us, is it?
No, I suppose not.
Of course it isn’t. So, hence… you are completely forgiven. [dramatic music]
Mm.
I am absolutely crazy about you, Stephanie Johnson. Can you tell?
[chuckles] You’ve given me a few hints.
Mm.
Yeah. [chuckles]
All right, now I will, uh, succumb to my own insecurities. I’m going to ask you a question. You don’t have to answer.
Succumb away, then.
Mm. Okay, well, how do I– how do I phrase this? I guess I’ll just be direct. [soft music] Is it better being with me than being with Philip?
[laughs] Wow.
Mm.
Wow. Um, I’m really glad that you gave me the option not to answer, because… [chuckles] Aside from not wanting to compare romantic partners in that way, I can’t believe that you thought it was a okay time to bring up Philip.
So you’re taking the no-answer option.
Ah…
Oh.
Fine. Since you’re so insecure– though I doubt you really are, in fact, I think you’re the opposite in this particular area… you are better than Philip. Happy?
I am, actually. I am.
[laughs]
Mm. Because contrary to what you may think, I’m always welcome to, uh, you know, some reassurance.
Well, as am I, truth be told.
Oh, yeah?
Yeah. Yeah. So, am I… better than… all of the women you’ve been with? There’s obviously too many to name.
Oh, all right, easy, easy, easy, easy, easy. I admit–I admit I’ve– I’ve been involved with my… fair amount of women. [clears throat] But the truth is… not one of them comes remotely close to you, Stephanie Johnson.
Philip… honey… I am only going to say this once, so listen up. I did not shoot EJ. [easygoing music]
Okay. Got it.
Good. Now this interrogation is over, and I can eat my food.
Fine. No further questions. I’m just happy to know my mom won’t be doing 25 to life anytime soon.
And I’m very touched by your concern.
And now I better get going. Xander and I have a lot to talk about now that another DiMera has been taken off the board.
See you later.
[door closes] [ominous music]
Yes, EJ… you finally got what was coming to you.
So I take it things didn’t go well when Holly confronted you about ratting out Doug to Mrs. Williams.
How did you know about that, about Holly confronting me?
Oh, I ran into Doug at the square, and he mentioned Holly was going to talk to you, and she seemed pretty pissed.
Yeah, well… pissed is a bit of an understatement. [scoffs] I bet Doug just loved it.
Hey, who cares about Doug? What happened with you and Holly? I mean, did you tell her that you were just trying to look out for her?
Yeah, but, uh, she didn’t buy it. She claimed that the reason I did it is because I was jealous. It isn’t entirely untrue. [dramatic music]
Hey… Holly’s going to come around. Just give it time. I mean, the two of you have had issues before, right?
Yeah, but… that’s the thing, Sophia. I think Holly and I have finally had one issue too many… thanks to Doug Williams.
What are you talking about? Why would it be your fault?
Well, isn’t it obvious? I mean, if it wasn’t for me, you and Tate would still be together.
Whoa, hold–hold on. That is so not true. Tate and I broke up for a whole bunch of reasons.
And none of those reasons involved me?
Okay, smart-ass. Yeah, maybe some of the reasons involved you, but that still doesn’t make it your fault.
Really?
Look… it’s just been one crisis after another ever since Tate and I first got together, and… I think it all really just came to an end when he got Sophia pregnant. And I was an idiot to think that we could get past it. but… I don’t know–I’m starting to realize that our relationship has been doomed for a while now. I mean, it’s barely been hanging on by a thread. So, yeah, okay. Maybe him telling Julie may have been the last straw, but nothing you did caused that to happen. That was all Tate.
Well, even if it wasn’t my fault, I’m really sorry that you had to go through that, Holly.
Are you really?
Holly, you’re my friend. I care about how you’re doing.
Yeah, but that’s just it, Doug. I mean, based on what you told me a few months ago, you care about me as more than just a friend. So is it really the craziest thought in the world that you might be– I don’t know–a little happy Tate and I broke up? [phone ringing] Oh, my God.
What is it?
EJ was shot last night.
What? Is he–
The news alert says he’s in critical condition at University Hospital.
Look, that was your stepdad.
Oh, my God.
If–if you need to go be with him in the hospital–
No, I–no, it’s fine. I’m just shocked is all. I mean, I’m thinking about Johnny and EJ’s other family. Wow. But, no, I don’t think anyone’s expecting me to visit, at least not right away.
Okay, if you’re sure…
Yeah. Yeah, I am. I’ll check in with Johnny later. Um, okay, how about I go get you some breakfast before I head to school?
Oh, you don’t need to worry about that. I can figure something out.
Yeah, but you figuring something out might get you caught. It’s safer if you stay in here as much as possible.
Okay. You’re probably right.
Yeah. Now, feel free to take that shower. Oh, and if anyone knocks on the door, just ignore it. My grandma sometimes does that just to check if I’m awake yet.
Sweet. Thanks. Oh, and, Holly… thank you, really.
Yeah. [door closes] [soft music]
Great. Yeah, we’ll meet you at the square later. I… I love you, too, Mom.
How’d it go?
She said she’s willing to reopen the adoption discussion. So I guess the news about EJ really did have an impact.
Right. As you said it would. Uh, speaking of EJ… I feel like maybe I should go check in on Holly, see if she’s doing okay.
What? Now? Tate, if she wanted to talk to you, she would have just texted you back.
I know, but, still, she might appreciate–
Might what? Forgive you? Or say that the breakup was just one big mistake?
I’m just going to meet you in the square, okay?
Yeah. Okay.
Hey, uh, I just wanted to say thank you so much for talking to your mom. I, uh… I want this adoption to go through as much as anyone. I guess that goes without saying, though.
Yeah, it does. Fingers crossed.
[door closes]
Hope I’m not interrupting.
Not at all. We were just talking about you, actually.
You were?
Yeah. And the, uh, sordid situation you got yourself into with Alex and Stephanie.
Ah… that.
Yeah, that. Look, as not just your co-CEO but also the head of this family, I really do hope I’m right in assuming that this particular chapter of your romantic life is at an end?
You are correct, yes. Stephanie and I are over, for good this time.
Wonderful. I suppose that means we can get back to work.
I will take that as my cue to leave. And I’m needed at the hospital soon anyway.
See you tonight, darling. Mwah. So, uh, what’s first on the agenda? I was hoping that maybe we could start by discussing–
Actually, it seems the agenda has been set for us, brother.
Hmm?
EJ DiMera’s been shot… Which means things just went from bad to worse for the DiMeras. [dramatic music]
[sighs] So… what’s your schedule like today?
[chuckles] Thank you.
You’re welcome.
I, um–I have a– [laughs] I have a strategy session for the hospital fundraiser this morning and then got a meeting with Mayor Price at City Hall in the afternoon and then, uh, drinks with a potential new client in the evening.
Wow.
What about you?
I’m meeting with Xander and Philip at the house.
That should be fun.
Mm.
Have you decided what you’re going to do… about the secret, I mean?
I’m still not sure. But, honestly, I’m leaning towards telling Xander the truth and letting the chips fall where they may.
Right. Even though those chips might involve Sarah and Xander’s marriage.
No pressure, right?
Ugh, I’m not trying to guilt-trip you, Alex. It’s your decision. Just wanted to remind you what’s at stake.
I get it.
And, yeah, Sarah’s my friend, and… of course, I’d love to help her, but… it’s your family, not mine. So I will stand by whatever decision you choose to make.
Hey, Mom, give me a call when you get this. It’s–it’s about EJ. Oh, great, just what I don’t need.
Holly. Hey.
Sophia. Hey.
I, uh, heard about you and Tate.
What about us?
Well, the breakup, obviously. Tate feels just awful about that.
Yeah, I really don’t want to talk about that right now.
Mm, Tate does. That’s why he went to your house.
Wait. Tate went to my house? When?
A little while ago. He’s probably there right now. [dramatic music]
Holly, it’s me, Tate. I– Can we talk?
Holly, are you–
[elevator bell dings]
Stephanie. Hey.
Morning.
Uh, listen, um… I just, uh– I wanted to thank you… for convincing Alex to go along with my story. I-I know it’s a lot to ask.
I wouldn’t thank me yet.
What do you mean?
I mean Alex is still considering telling Xander the truth.
I’ll be damned. EJ finally got what was coming to him.
Morning, Xander, Philip.
Yeah, easy now, lads. Let’s, uh– let’s not lose our heads. I’ll never hear the end of it if you smash up Maggie’s bric-a-brac. That was a feeble attempt at making things light. Uh, look, Philip was just reassuring me that his relations with Stephanie are in the past. So, if you’re still harboring some unresolved resentment–
No, no, no, no, no. It’s all right. As I said last night, Philip and I– we came to an understanding. Ain’t that right, Phil?
It is. [clears throat] Alex was very mature about the whole thing.
Brilliant. I’m so glad that’s settled… because Philip was just showing me a very interesting article that could end up being our silver bullet.
EJ got shot?
The gods are smiling down on us, gents. Kristen’s one crisis away from a straitjacket, and EJ is fighting for his life in a coma.
So maybe we should hold off on dancing on his grave, yeah?
Oh, I’m sorry if I sound callous, but the important thing in this moment is to realize that now is the time to make our move on DiMera, thanks to whoever pulled that trigger.
