THIS STILL NEEDS EXTENSIVE EDITING!

[dramatic music]

Steve, I know it’s late in Greece, but I haven’t heard from you. And I want to hear your voice. So will you call me, please?

I’ll do you one better, Sweetness.

Hey, Marlena.

Oh. Hi, Paul. Thank you for joining me.

Yeah, sure. No problem. I was hoping my dad might be with you.

Oh, no. I’m sorry to disappoint you. He’s still in Greece.

Ah, that’s too bad. Yeah, Andrew’s about to wrap things up with his sister, and I was hoping that I’d see my dad before we left. Do you have any idea when he’s gonna be back?

No, actually, I haven’t spoken to him for a little while. But Steve is over there looking after him, and I’m– I’m sure he’s just fine. Fact is that I’m actually a little more worried worried about your brother.

[groans]

Wow. We really went to town, huh?

And you’re sure that Xander’s mom hasn’t checked out yet? OK. Yeah. OK. Thank you, Phyllis. I appreciate the intel. [chuckles] All right.

[sighs] [echoing] If you are really against inviting your mom, then I understand, and I will drop it. But I just think it might be nice for Victoria to get to know her paternal grandmother.

You know I’ll do anything for our daughter. All right, I’ll agree, but only for Victoria’s sake.

[squeals] Thank you. I actually think that this will be good for all of us, not just Victoria.

Yeah, well, if I were you, I’d lower my expectations, OK? You know, I’m not convinced this is the best idea, but I do appreciate the gesture. I know your heart’s in the right place about it.

Thank you for understanding.

I do. However, I reserve the right, if this turns out to be an enormous disaster, to say I told you so.

Great news.

Mm.

Our daughter’s kidnapper has officially pled guilty.

Wow. So Theresa did the right thing.

Only ’cause I had the cops breathing down the back of her neck. I mean, she knew there was no other choice. It was basically a matter of time.

Is her brother still trying to work out a plea deal?

Yeah, but there’s no way she’ll avoid prison now.

Good. Good, now we can put that whole nightmare behind us, and we can focus on the future.

Mm.

Namely, rescheduling our wedding.

The sooner, the better, my love.

I agree. And hopefully we can do it before your mom flies back home.

That was quite the flight.

Yup. Let’s hope that turbulence wasn’t a bad omen, that this isn’t just a wild-goose chase.

Listen, Clyde could be lying. But if Abigail is alive, it makes sense that he’d want to stash her away in his hometown. So now we just got to figure out her location.

[soft orchestration] announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “Days of Our Lives.”

[dramatic music]

I don’t know why you’re so eager to have my mom attend our wedding. I mean, didn’t she tell you that she doesn’t even think I should be getting married right now?

Well, yeah, but only because she was concerned that you’re still processing this revelation, not because it was anything personal about me.

Well, I should think not. Because you… are the best thing that’s ever happened to me.

Obvi! [laughs] And like I said, I think she’s just– I think she’s just worried about you. It’s a lot to take in, being Victor’s son, coming into all that money. You know, she flew all this way for a wedding, so I think it might be nice to do while she’s still in town.

And is she still in town?

Yeah. Yeah, I just spoke to Phyllis at the Salem Inn. Your mom hasn’t checked out yet, which means there’s still time for you to go and work things out with her.

And why do you assume that I want to?

Because it’s the right thing to do. She is your mom, and she is our daughter’s grandma. I think it would be really nice for you two to have a decent relationship with her.

When you put it like that–

Yes, I knew you would come around. So why wait? Just go tell her that you want her to stay for our wedding.

But I really don’t want her to.

Xander, you literally just agreed that it would be good for you and our daughter for you to go mend fences. So go to her while she’s still in Salem. You won’t regret it.

Cheers.

Oh, thank you.

You’re welcome.

You know, when I invited you over yesterday for a drink, I didn’t anticipate it turning into a -hour bender.

Ah, me neither.

You were really knocking back the drinks. I wasn’t sure I could even keep up with you. And that’s really saying something.

Well, look, I was dealing with a lot when I got your text. I had this lovely interaction with my ex-wife.

Oh, the dreadful Theresa woman, the one who tried to swindle my son out of his fortune.

That’s the one.

[chuckles]

That’s her. Believe it or not, I thought we were actually on the path to reconcile, and– no, no. Yesterday was–was the nail in–in our coffin.

Mm, so my text came just at the right moment. Or the wrong moment, depending on how you look at it.

Despite this lovely headache I have, I don’t have a single regret. Not at all. I needed to drown my sorrows, and you, lovely lady, are a hell of a drinking partner.

Same here. Although just to be clear, no one can know about this.

I won’t tell if you don’t tell.

So Brady’s not answering his phone and he’s not replying to texts?

Right. Tried to reach him to invite him to his brother’s going-away party, and it was a last-minute thing, but–

But?

He didn’t come home last night.

And it’s not– not the only time that’s happened recently. And I start to wonder if maybe he’s been keeping secrets.

I am so happy to see you. But why didn’t you call me and let me know you were on your way back?

Oh, there wasn’t time. I booked a last-minute flight, and then I made a beeline to the airport, and I didn’t get to the gate until they were closing the door.

And so you came right here after you landed?

You were my first stop, Sweetness.

[chuckles]

Well, second. Luckily the gift shop downstairs had your favorite.

It’s lovely, as always. So tell me, how was Greece? Did you find John? Did he come back with you?

No, he didn’t.

So John stayed in Greece? Why? What happened?

Well, when I got there, I tried reaching out to him several times. He wasn’t responding to any of my calls or texts, so I decided to go to the cemetery.

Where Konstantin’s daughter was buried.

That’s right. Took me a long time to find it, but when I finally did, I went to Catharina’s grave, and on the grave were fresh flowers with a note attached.

From John?

Yes.

What did it say?

Well, what you would expect, that he felt tremendous guilt for taking her life and he didn’t think he’d ever be able to forgive himself.

Ah, poor guy. He was brainwashed. None of this was his fault.

Yeah, well, John still doesn’t see it that way.

Well, were you able to talk to him about it?

No. That’s the problem. [dramatic music] I still don’t know where he is.

Is it possible Brady’s involved with someone new and he’s just not ready to open up about it?

No. No. Brady knows that I would be happy for him to have someone in his life. He knows that I– I fret about him being lonely. And in fact, he texted me last night to say that he was going to be sleeping at the office.

Oh, well, then that’s what it is. Makes sense, doesn’t it? He’s probably very busy launching a new line for Basic Black, which is why he couldn’t make it to Eric’s party.

No, I don’t think that’s it.

Why? You don’t think he’s telling the truth? I mean about being in the office.

Brady has been in a funk lately about Theresa. I mean, it was a very toxic relationship.

I just think, after what’s happened, he– well, he could be in trouble.

You mentioned before that you’re supposed to be sober.

Yeah, I’ve had a couple almost slipups, but I haven’t had a drink in a couple years.

Ooh. So I’m your enabler?

No. No, Fiona, you’re not. It’s just that all this stuff with my ex-wife has just gotten into my head. Usually I would go to a meeting…

Ooh.

Right, but– well, I’m not in the mood to go to a meeting. So how about you?

Mm. No, those meetings are not for me. I find them tedious, all those sad little people whining about their insipid little lives. Makes me want to drink more. Now, of course, if they had an open bar…

[chuckles] Yeah, that–why didn’t they think of that?

Yeah, just saying.

Well, I sometimes find the meetings to be very useful and helpful. But you got to go in with the right attitude.

Yeah. I see they’ve done you a lot of good.

[sighs]

Sorry.

No.

Shouldn’t have said that.

No, it’s all right. It’s all right. You’re not wrong. Relapsing was not in my plans. But like I said, no–no regrets.

Well, at the risk of furthering my bad influence, I have to say that I am doing just fine. Some people might say I’m a functioning alcoholic, but I’d say the key word there is “functioning.”

Mm. Then why all the secrecy?

Xander and his fiancée wouldn’t approve. I have to pretend to be completely sober if I want to have any chance of getting back into his good books.

We have been through this, Sarah. I mean, my mum lied to me my entire life. And I’m sure you can understand why I might not be ready to forgive her just because, after abandoning me decades ago, she suddenly shows up in Salem for our wedding that didn’t even happen.

I know. I know. She has to earn back your trust. Of course she does. But I–I do think that she is willing to try, and I hope that you give her that chance, especially because she has cleaned up her act. She–she’s sober, and she feels– it feels like she’s committed to that.

You’re really going to bat for her, huh?

I think– [sighs] I think it’s just because I’m a mom now, too, and I can empathize with wanting to have a good relationship with my child.

And for the record, you are ten times the mother Fiona Cook will ever be.

Yeah, I suppose you make a few valid points. So maybe I’ll go and see what my mum has to say for herself. Who knows? Maybe she’ll surprise me.

[exhales heavily] Well? What do you think? Think that’s the same billboard we saw in the video?

I don’t know. I didn’t get a clear shot, but… based on this partial image, the–the– the numbers for the skating rink, the font, and the color– I don’t know. Seems pretty close. Now we just have to figure out which one of these buildings has the same vantage point as the video, and we should find her.

[sighs] That may be easier said than done.

So let’s say, judging by the distance and the angle, that the building has to be right over here.

Right. Well, there’s only one building in that direction that seems to have the right height. [dramatic music]

All right, let’s get started.

Oh. Mom! These are so adorable.

Oh, I just saw them in the store window, and I couldn’t resist. You know how grandmas are. Anyway, plus, I thought it would be a good excuse to come over and see our little angel.

Well, you never need an excuse. But I’m so sorry. I just put her down for a nap.

Oh, well, I can come back another time.

No, no, no, no. Stay, please? I’ll make us some tea, and we can catch up.

That would be lovely.

OK. Mm. Oh, so I assume that you– you heard that Theresa turned herself in.

Yeah. I’m the one that took her to the station.

What? Why?

Well, she asked me to, so I drove her. I mean, you know, she said she was afraid that she would– she wouldn’t; she would back out if someone didn’t go with her. And there’s a part of me that’s– that respects the fact that she’s finally taking responsibility for her actions.

You always did have a soft spot for her.

Well, I was her sponsor, so what can I say? My instinct is still to pull for her.

Even if she kidnapped your grandchild?

Oh, no. I–no–believe me, I remember that, and I’m very– I’m still very angry with her. Now, what she did was terrible, but I–I can’t help but feel for her just a little bit, especially since– I don’t know– she seems to be truly remorseful.

Well, don’t expect that kind of grace from Xander, ’cause he is so angry. He wants Theresa to fry, and I can’t exactly blame him. She completely screwed with his life.

Yeah, I understand. So where is that husband-to-be, anyway? [chuckles]

Well, at my urging, he went to go see his mom.

Oh.

[sighs]

I’ll let housekeeping do the bed.

Yeah, I should probably change and get out of your hair.

No, don’t do that. It’s getting close to dinnertime. You should stay. We could have room service again. You could even stay the night.

Thank you for the offer, but I don’t– I don’t think it’s a good idea. And I’m sorry to have to ask you this again, but nothing happened between us last night, right?

No. Twice you’ve slept in my bed, and twice nothing untoward has happened. Hmm. Perhaps the third time’s the charm. [both chuckle] [knock at door]

Mum? It’s me, Xander. I know you’re in there, Mum, so please, open up.

Yeah, yeah, you’re right. I mean, Brady was pretty upset about Theresa marrying Alex. I mean, as soon as they tied the knot, he took off.

Where did he go? Do you know?

A meeting, apparently?

Ah. So he’s feeling tempted to drink.

Yeah, I would assume so.

Well, I’m glad he went to a meeting. I just wish he had contacted me.

Has he done that in the past?

He has. We’re very close. And he knows that I will be there for him. You know, I’m wondering if– has there been a red flag? Have you noticed any questionable behavior?

[echoing]

What you up to there, bro?

So you’re saying that John is missing?

Well, I sure couldn’t find him. I did find out where he was staying. The hotel manager said that he never checked out, but he hadn’t been back to his room for several days. And there’s something else.

What?

About the note. [tense music]

This–is that blood?

It is. I had the ISA check it against their records. It’s a match for John’s.

Wow. If this is John’s blood– I mean, we all know how despondent he’s been over Catharina’s death.

Yeah. Despondent is one thing, but I really don’t think John would do harm to himself. Just in case, I checked with the local authorities. There are no reports of unidentified bodies.

Well, thank God for that. But I mean, what could have happened to John? And with that blood on the note, I mean– [tense music]

I’m leaning toward foul play.

Ah. Well, what did Marlena say?

I haven’t told her yet.

I asked you a question, Paul. Have you noticed anything unusual about Brady’s behavior? [dramatic music]

[echoing]

Gonna be OK?

Yeah, well, I’m not gonna drink this thing.

I don’t need it. Just a weak moment.

I’ll go pour this out.

Hey, man. I’m really glad to see you. Come on.

I know Brady’s been going through a lot. But to the best of my knowledge, he hasn’t been drinking.

Good. That’s a relief. I guess, you know, with John out of town, I– I worry about you two so much.

Thank you. And look, I get your concern. And if it’ll make you feel any better, I’ll track down Brady, and I’ll make sure he’s OK. And I bet I… can still catch him at work.

That’d be great. That’d be great. Thank you. And if you learn anything at all, please let me know.

Of course.

Thank you for this. We miss you so much.

Same here. And if you hear anything from my dad…

I will let you know immediately.

Thank you.

Bye, honey.

[sighs]

It’ll lead to too many questions.

Trust me, I’m in no mood to deal with Xander either right now, so why don’t we just be quiet? He’ll go away.

Mum? I know you’re in there. [chuckles] The front desk told me that you haven’t left your room all day. Mum! [knocking]

I’m here, darling. Just give me a minute. I need to throw on a robe. Go out the bathroom window.

We’re three stories up.

Yes, well, you look very fit. I’m sure you’ll be fine. Now, go! Go. Oh-oh-oh, here, here.

Mum, what’s taking so long?

I’m coming. [groans] I’m sorry. I was trying to clean up a bit. Please, do come in.

Thanks.

Well, this is certainly a lovely surprise.

But not totally unexpected, right? I mean, you did ask Sarah to speak to me on your behalf.

Yes, I did. I thought perhaps you’d be more receptive to my story if it came from her.

And what a story, yeah. Sarah told me all about your mental breakdown, how you were committed to a mental institution against your will, how you never intended to abandon me.

You sound like you don’t believe me.

That’s because… I’m not sure I do.

I don’t get it. The building that we checked out isn’t tall enough to match the view that we got from the video.

Well, it’s the tallest one in the area. None of the other buildings make sense.

And something else I didn’t think about. None of the buildings there have windows that match the window in the video. I mean, it doesn’t make any sense. [sighs]

Well, unless–

What? What is it?

[sighs] There’s another billboard in town for the skating rink. It’s–got to be at the wrong place.

All right. Let’s start looking again.

Well, it sounds like Xander’s mom has been through quite a lot.

She has, yeah. She’s definitely been to hell and back. But… hearing her story changed my perception of what happened between her and Xander.

Mm. Well, I have to say, I can certainly relate to the grief that Fiona felt by the loss of her husband. Mm. Not to mention her battle with addiction.

Yeah, of course you can. [dramatic music] But it sounds like– it does seem like she’s done a lot of work on herself. And it would just be a shame if Xander didn’t give her another chance.

Yeah.

It’s just so very convenient. All those years of you being a distant mother, being a– an absent mother, actually, turns out, none of it was your fault.

Oh, I didn’t say it wasn’t my fault. The point of telling you about what my life has been like these past years, it isn’t to absolve myself of my responsibility. I fully admit that I handled things terribly when your fath– sorry, when Titus died. [sighs] I mean, my God, I turned my back on my only child. I found comfort at the bottom of a bottle.

As I explained to Sarah, I’ve cleaned up my act. I truly have.

Right. Meaning that you’re not drinking anymore?

No. I’m totally committed to my sobriety. I even go to meetings, which are wonderful, by the way. So many interesting and caring people.

I’m sorry. You’re in a -step program?

I am, of course. It’s terribly important to me. You see, I want to stay clean and sober for you, my precious son, so we can finally have a good relationship, so you can be proud of me.

Hey, bro. I just was on my way to find you.

Hey, Paul. How you doing?

What’s with the limp?

Oh, man. [chuckles] Twisted– twisted this ankle bad.

Right.

Yeah.

Yeah.

And the hair accessory?

Hair–oh. Oh, man. [chuckles] I fell in a– twisted my ankle, fell in a hed– it was a hedge or bush or something over there. It was pretty embarrassing, actually, to be honest with you. Why are you looking for me? What’s going on?

Well, I was just with Marlena, and she’s a little concerned about you not coming home last night.

Yeah, you know, I didn’t come home last night. I was–I was at the office all night. I was swamped with work. I texted her.

Yeah, yeah. I mean, she told me. But yeah, I’m just a little– a little worried about you.

Yeah, no, I’m fine. Why wouldn’t I be fine? [both chuckle]

Brady, I know you’ve been struggling because of Theresa.

Oh, come on.

And so much so that you were tempted to drink. And if I hadn’t shown up–

No, hey, it was a mistake. I know that it was a mistake. It’s cool.

I know you do, OK, and I just– I just need to say, OK, seeing you like this? You need to be honest with me, Brady, please. Do I need to worry about you?

[sighs] If John is missing, if something happened to him, you have to tell Marlena.

I know. I just kept holding off, hoping I could bring her some good news. The ISA is still looking into it. But I figured I should come home and give Marlena an update in person.

She’s gonna be horrified by this news.

Yeah. She was counting on me to look after John. Now I’ve let them both down.

Oh, stop it. You did everything you could to find him, come on.

[sighs] Well, I’m not giving up. I’m gonna go back to Greece. I’m gonna keep looking. But first I have to break the news to Marlena.

I’ll call her, get her to come over here right away.

This has to be the right building. It’s the perfect height and angle in relation to the other billboard outside. And the windows, look, they–they match the windows in the video.

It’s locked.

Oh.

All the other ones have been unlocked. [knocking] Hello! Is anyone there? [dull banging]

So have you and Xander set another wedding date?

No, not yet. But we both agree that the sooner, the better.

And I assume it’s safe to say that your fiancé is done with double weddings.

Oh. [laughter] Yeah, we both are.

Oh.

W we just want it to be small and intimate, with one bride and one groom. So it’ll probably just be you and Victoria and hopefully Fiona.

Yeah. I wonder what’s going on over there.

I know. I’m dying to know. [laughter] But Xander isn’t back yet, so I think it’s safe to assume that he at least didn’t immediately storm out of there, which… has to be a good sign, right?

Right.

[laughs] [dramatic music]

And I know you have every reason to doubt what I’ve told you.

Well, you did lie to me about my paternity my entire life. And you only came forward with the truth once it became clear that I would inherit Victor’s fortune.

Darling, I am not after your money. All I want is for us to be on good terms again, for us to possibly have a relationship moving forward. Xander, you’re my son, and I love you. So please, tell me you believe me. Tell me you can find it in your heart to forgive me.

What the hell is that?

There’s no reason to worry about me, OK? Honestly, I’m fine. I’m fine. I appreciate your concern, though. I do.

Yeah, Brady, I– I just can’t overlook the fact that I found you with a drink in your hand.

Hey, look, man, we’ve been over that, right? You didn’t tell Marl– did you tell Marlena?

No, I wouldn’t betray your confidence. But maybe I should have.

Hey, no, you shouldn’t have, and I’ll tell you why. ‘Cause I’m fine, all right? It was–it was– it was a mistake. I actually did go to a meeting, all right? But I’m feeling better, with your help. I’m together, and I’m stronger.

You sure?

Yeah. I’m sure. I’m fine, totally fine, all right? I just–if you don’t mind, I got to get some ice on this ankle, all right? See you around.

[phone rings]

Hello.

Hey, Marlena. Just want to let you know I talked to Brady.

Well, that was fast.

Yeah, I just actually ran into him in the square on my way to Basic Black.

And how was he?

Well, he– he says he’s fine. Yeah, he’s just– he says he’s been really busy with work the last few days, which is why he slept in the office. So there’s nothing to worry about.

Well, that’s a relief. Thank you for checking.

Anytime.

We’ll talk soon.

[tense music]

[echoing]

He heard Konstantin’s voice in his head, telling him to shoot you. He went as far as actually picking up the gun. Then he said he– he felt disoriented, wasn’t sure what to do.

I remember John holding the gun. And Sarah said something to him, and it was like he didn’t even hear her. But he didn’t pull the trigger.

He’s been fighting this fight through all that. You can imagine how difficult this has been for him.

Now, where’s the Pawn card? Where’s that?

I have it. And I don’t think that John would hurt himself or anybody else. He just–he’s worried.

Yeah, I’m sure he is, based on what you just told me. So if John left because he’s afraid of hurting me, I’m the one who has to go there and bring him back home.

[knock at door]

Kayla– oh. Steve, hi. I didn’t know you were back.

I am, obviously.

Yeah. Kayla didn’t mention that when she asked me to come to her office. Mm, where is she?

She’s with a patient.

Oh, OK.

Well, if you’re back, that must mean that John is back too. Where is he?

Marlena, I think you should sit down. We need to talk.

Did you hear that?

Someone’s in there.

OK, let’s call the police.

OK. No, no, no, if Abby’s behind that door, I’m not wasting another second. Move, Jack.

All right.

Oh, my God.
