Best back-to-school streaming devices and TVs by Jodi W. 1/10/23

The time to go back to school is fast-approaching. If you are one of the millions of students who do not know what to do in their free time, you may have been thinking about purchasing a streaming device. Small and portable, they can be attached to any TV and can help you produce HD or even 4K streaming services to your TV.

What Are Streaming Services?

These devices connect to streaming services. These services deliver video content on demand. Similar to YouTube, they provide a limited amount of content you can stream on-demand. As the content can be educational, it can help you study and do so in a fun way. All the content there is original or made by other companies, but private content is never allowed.

This is the biggest difference between any streaming website and a streaming service. Another big difference is that the content can be streamed to various devices, not just laptops, tablets, and smartphones. The TV or the streaming device should have an appropriate app installed, but most devices today support most of these apps and streaming services as it is.

Which Streaming Services Are the Best for Students?

Among these services are Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+. These services are best suited for students and all others who are more curious in nature than others. This is thanks to the rich content of documentaries and other educational content. Netflix is definitely the number one since they offer the most content that is original and made by them.

Streaming services for students should always be educational and have the value that a book could offer. Although there is no exam that focuses on streaming services, these can significantly help by offering additional information and a chance to revise. They can also offer great ideas for research papers. Once the idea is there, you can check out writing service reviews and find the writing service that works for you. This way, professionals will help make your idea come to fruition.

Top Back-to-School Streaming Devices

Although Netflix is the golden standard for streaming services, others should also be considered. Still, most devices support the biggest streaming services, although not all of them may work in all countries. For this reason, you should always consider which device to buy, especially if you move a lot or go back home to another country for holidays. The devices we present here are devices that are designed for the US market. As such, they provide a certain level of quality that is expected from devices like this and are likely to provide many hours of content streaming.

Amazon Fire Stick Lite

Amazon Fire TV Stick Lite

The super-simple-to-use Fire TV Stick Lite offers everything that a student needs. It comes with a remote controller that also has built-in voice control. It offers most features compared to its price. It is inexpensive and can be delivered to your dorm room in less than 2 days.

Insignia Amazon Fire TV Edition

The Insignia Edition is one of the TVs out there with built-in support for streaming services. Amazon has its own – Prime Video. The entire TV is optimized for this type of service and will likely provide you with a lot of entertainment during those long winter nights. The screen is only 32 inches, so it should fit in most college-form rooms.

Roku Express

Roku Express HD

Roku Express HD features a streamlined design and a very fast response time. The stick is the cheapest on our list and offers streaming from many services. This cheaper Roku Express 4K Plus version is still a great option for HD streaming.

Roku Streambar

Streambar by Roku is two devices in one: a streaming service device and a soundbar. The combo is great for all who like to make parties and invite many friends over for a movie night. The bar can also double as an out-source when gaming for example. It augments the sound from the TV and provides a more enjoyable experience.

Final Considerations

Streaming services and devices are many on the market. Here, we explored different options and saw what could suit you. All the devices on the list are available in the US (most of them on Amazon) and are easy to use. As they are small and light, they will take up barely any space on the desktop.

Primetime TV Review: Lopez VS. Lopez

TV Review!

“Lopez VS. Lopez” Review on by Eva 11/6/2022

George Lopez returns to television with a show loosely based on his real life. George plays a man who lost his construction business and his house because of the pandemic. George moves in with his daughter Mayan (played by his real-life daughter Mayan Lopez). The relationship between George and his daughter is strained and Mayan goes to therapy to deal with the issues she has because her parents got divorced, and the fact that her father was not around much growing up. George is hoping to build a relationship with his daughter by remodeling her kitchen. George makes a tik tok video to tell Mayan he is broke and homeless so Mayan and her husband let George move into their house to live with them. Mayan and George must adjust to living with each other and while this show sounds like a drama it is a comedy.

The show is funny with most of the laughs coming from Mayan Lopez who is very funny. The show highlights how different generations can learn from each other it also has some touching moments. The show begins what NBC calls its Friday night comedy hour which is followed by Young Rock. If you want to laugh you will enjoy this show it is worth watching although I am not sure how well it will do on Friday nights.

The rest of the cast other than George and Mayan needs time to find their rhythm.

I give this show a 4 out of 5 stars.

Primetime TV Review: Alaska Daily

TV Review!

“Alaska Daily” Review on by Eva 10/9/2022

I wasn’t going to watch this show until I saw some television interviews with the star of the show Hilary Swank (Eileen Fitzgerald) where she spoke about the show so I decided to watch it.

I was very surprised by how much I enjoyed the show, it is well written and had my attention from the first minute I pushed play on my DVR recording of the show. I always pick out some new shows tie watch every television season but it takes me a few episodes to like new shows and sometimes, after a few episodes, I stop watching the show because I don’t enjoy it anymore. It is very rare that a show grabs me from the first minute.

Swank plays Eileen Fitzgerald, a New York reporter who is working on a big story trying to expose a possible presidential appointee before the president gives the man a big job in the State Department. Eileen’s source for the story is discredited by what she believes are highly placed government officials who don’t want the story to come out. Eileen doesn’t want to rewrite the story like her boss wants her to do. So, she quits her job and decides to write a book exposing the truth about the presidential appointee. Eileen is then contacted by a former boss, Stanley Kornik (Jeff Perry) who wants her to come work for The Daily Alaskan and help him investigate a story about some missing indigenous women who after some time were found dead. Eileen takes the job and with the help of the young reporters at the paper begins to investigate the story.

I really enjoyed this show because I enjoy mysteries, and I want to find out who killed these women. I also enjoyed the mentor relationship that the character of Eileen has with the young newspaper reporters although she doesn’t want to be a mentor, but that is the role she takes on because the young reporters look up r her and appreciate her experience.

I think this show is worth watching and if you missed the first episode you can watch it on Hulu or ABC I give this show 5 out of 5 stars.

Primetime TV Review: So Help Me Todd

TV Review!

“So Help Me Todd” Review on by Eva 10/2/2022

I decided to watch this show because I saw commercials for it. I thought it was a comedy, but CBS calls it a drama. I think the show is an even mix of both comedy and drama. The show is about Todd Wright (Skylar Astin) who lost his detective license when his partner and detective agency framed him forgery and illegal wiretapping.

Joan Wright (Marsha Gay Harden) has been trying to help Todd get back on his feet, but she thinks that he should quit being a private detective. Todd’s mother, Margaret, needs Todd’s help investigating a case for her law firm, and is impressed at how good Todd at his job so, she gets him his detective license back, so he can be the investigator for her law firm while her investigator is on maternity leave.

I enjoyed watching the innovative way Todd solves cases, and the complicated relationships between him and his mother. If you like lawyer shows with some comedy you will enjoy this show.

The show airs on Thursday nights after Ghosts and if you missed the pilot you can watch it on the show’s official website or on Paramount Plus. I give this show 5 out of 5 stars.

Primetime TV Review: The Rookie: Feds

TV Review!

“The Rookie: Feds” Review on by Eva 9/28/2022

The Rookie: Feds is a spinoff of The Rookie and follows the career change of former guidance counselor turned FBi agent Simone Clark (Niece Nash-Betts). Simone is the oldest rookie in the FBI and now must prove herself to everyone on the special FBI task force where she is assigned to work. Simone doesn’t always follow the rules relying more on her life experience and her instincts in order to solve cases. Special Agent Carter Hope (James Lesure) a by the book agent who is in charge of training Simone which is hard for him because Simone doesn’t often listen to what he tells her to do.

The first episode started a little slow since they had to introduce the characters in the cast so it didn’t draw me into the episode right away but it got better towards the middle of the episode. The show also has a great sense of humor which fans of The Rookie will enjoy because the show doesn’t take itself as seriously as other police dramas which makes it fun to watch. I hope that in future episodes the show won’t start off as slowly and I will get to know the characters and enjoy watching them. I think it will also be fun to watch the cross overs with The Rookie and to see those characters helping out the Fed team.

I give this show a 4 out of5 stars. If you missed the first episode, you can stream it on Hulu or on the ABC app. I think fans of The Rookie will enjoy this show but I am not sure if it can attract viewers that don’t watch The Rookie.

Primetime TV Review: Celebrity Jeopardy

TV Review!

“Celebrity Jeopardy” Review on by Eva 9/28/2022

I was interested in watching this, show because I wanted to see if celebrities are smart or if they, are good entertainers There are 27 celebrities in this tournament and the ultimate winner gets $ 1 million for their charity .

In my opinion the questions are a bit easier than the daytime Jeopardy game, but it is a tournament for charity, so I am not bothered by the easier questions. One interesting change for this version of jeopardy is that they have a triple jeopardy round since then show is an hour long rather than the thirty-minute version in the daytime show. The winner of the game goes on to the semifinal game while the non-winners get $30, 000 for their charity.

If you like Jeopardy, you will enjoy this show and if you aren’t a Jeopardy watcher you might like this tournament because it is a bit less serious than the daytime show. Mayim Bialik hosts the tournament that airs on ABC on Sunday nights and streams the next day on Hulu or the ABC app.

I give this show 5 out of 5stars because I like it better than the daytime show.

Primetime TV Review: Monarch

TV Review!

“Monarch” Review on by Eva 9/13/2022

I decided to watch Monarch after I saw some video clips of the show which made me think that it was going to be a nighttime soap opera. While I really enjoy daytime soaps, I also enjoy nighttime soaps if they are good and Monarch is very good.

The show centers around the first family of country music the Roman family, which seems like a family who is living the American dream, but behind closed doors everyone in the family is hiding secrets.

The Matriarch of the family is Dottie Roman (Susan Sarandon) who is facing a battle with cancer and how she handles that battle with cancer will leave a lasting impact on her family especially her daughter Nicolette “Nicky” Roman. Dottie’s husband Albie Roman (Trace Atkins) loves his wife, children, and singing but he hates the business side of the music industry. Albie and Dottie will do whatever they have to do to protect their family image as the first family of country music.

The show premiered its first episode on Sunday, September 11, 2022, but will debut in its regular time slot on Tuesday, September 20, 2022, at 9 PM Eastern time 8 PM Central time on Fox.

If you missed the first episode it is worth going to ABC.com or Hulu to watch it. This show is full of twists and turns that keep viewers guessing what will happen next and gives you the classic soap staple the cliff hanger. The first episode is full of classic country song covers, but the show also plans to have original country songs in it.

I give this show 5 out of 5 stars and I will be watching it every week.

Review of “The Gilded Age: The Complete First Season”

DVD Review!

The Gilded Age: The Complete First Season DVD covver

“The Gilded Age: The Complete First Season” Review by Suzanne 7/22/22

I enjoyed this show a lot. I missed it when it came out, so I’m very glad to have watched the DVD. I never saw “Downton Abbey,” which was created by the same person (Julian Fellowes), so I can’t compare them. I think this is really good. Most period costume dramas are basically soap operas. They show you characters against a pretty backdrop from history. This one has better production values than most PBS series, which is probably why it’s on HBO. The acting and story are very good, and the sets and costumes are fabulous.

The story really draws you in. In 1882, a young woman named Marian (Louisa Jacobs) finds out that her late father left her no money or possessions to speak of, so she travels from her home in Philadelphia to live with two aunts that she’s never met. One of them, Agnes Van Rhijn (Christine Baranski, who never disappoints) is a snobby widow. She represents the “old money” of wealthy New Yorkers and resents the people with “new money” who are trying to push their way into society. At that time, there was a list of the top 400 most respectable people in NYC, which represented the “old money” people. They didn’t invite others to their parties and such. Because of railroads and other businesses, there were many “new money” people in NYC that wanted to be involved in society, so the others felt threatened. Agnes represents those people, along with the famous Mrs. Astor (based on the real person) and many others.  Agnes’ sister, Ada (the luminous Cynthia Nixon) is much kinder than Agnes.

Marian is robbed at the train station, so a young black woman, Peggy (DenĂŠe Benton) lends her money for a ticket. Marian in turn helps her out in NYC by getting her aunts to let her stay for the night (she is headed home to Brooklyn but the ferry is washed out). This was before they had subways- they only traveled by horse-drawn carriages, trains and ferries. Anyway, through Marian’s eyes, we meet all of the people in the series, including the people who live across the street, The Russells. They are very rich “new money” people who have built a big palace and hope to get involved with society. Bertha Russell (Carrie Coon) is a very pushy, determined woman, and her husband, George (Morgan Spector) is used to getting his way in business.

There are two main plots of the season. One is about Marian become romantically involved in a lawyer, Tom (Thomas Cocquerel), that she knew in Philadelphia (who moves to NYC) as she struggles to find her place in NYC and tries to make her own way without angering her stern Aunt Agnes too much. The other is about the Russells trying to win over society.  Then there are many smaller plots with Peggy and her parents and Agnes’ son, Oscar (Blake Ritson), who is secretly gay but trying to find a wife so that he can avoid scandal. Like “Downton Abbey” and its predecessor, “Upstairs Downstairs,” both families have many servants, whom we also learn about.

Some of the best parts of the show are how they show us some of the new technology of the time, such as “magic lanterns,” trains and electricity. Also, thy have a lot of great historical background and characters, and they use that to show us the plight of women and black people at the time (but without being preachy).

At first, I worried that the story would be predictable, as it seemed to be headed that way. However, I was pleasantly surprised that it wasn’t.  At least, it wasn’t to me. You may have a different opinion.  I’m looking forward to season 2!  The DVD is well worth getting because it has many extras to watch that you can’t find anywhere else. I know because I looked on YouTube to find them, and they’re not available.  The best of them are on Disk 3.  Do yourself a favor and buy the set, and also give it out to others during the holidays!

Review of “Skymed”

TV Review!

"SkyMed" Key Art

“Skymed” on Paramount+ Review by Suzanne 7/20/22

This show reminds me a little bit of “Chicago Med” or “Chicago Fire,” with a bit of “ER” thrown in. What makes it unusual is that it takes place in northern Canada, in the wilderness. It’s a Canadian show, but we’re seeing it down here on streaming. Most of the actors are newbies, and Canadian, but you’ll probably recognize veteran actor Aaron Ashmore, who plays Weezer, the senior person on the team.

Every ensemble show like this starts from a new person’s point of view, so we, the audience, can learn who is who and what is what. In this show, it’s nurse Hayley, played by Natasha Calis. She has left the big city to get away to the wilderness, but we don’t know why. She’s not the only one, either.

There’s quite a bit of action and adventure in the show to keep your attention. It remains to be seen whether it ever rises above the level of your average broadcast network TV show.

Review of “Flowers in the Attic: The Origin”

TV Review!

"Flowers in the Attic: The Origin" key art

“Flowers in the Attic: The Origin” on Lifetime Review by Suzanne 7/20/22

“Flowers in the Attic: The Origin” This is the prequel miniseries to the classic movie “Flowers in the Attic,” which I’ve never seen. It apparently involved a stern religious grandmother who locks her grandchildren in the attic. There is incest and rape in that drama. This shows how the grandma got to that point. Both are based on novels. “Flowers in the Attic” came out in 1979 from the pen of V.C. Andrews. She wrote many sequels, but only the first book was filmed (twice). This new miniseries is based on “Garden of Shadows” by Andrew Neiderman, who is now taking over V.C. Andrews’ characters.

I’ve only seen the first part so far, but I enjoyed it. I’m not a big fan of prequels because we know how the characters are going to end up (and it’s usually not good). There are many great actors in this. Most of them, such as Kelsey Grammar and Harry Hamlin, play small parts and aren’t on screen very long. Kate Mulgrew (“Star Trek: Prodigy”) and Paul Wesley (“Star Trek: Strange New Worlds”) also play small roles. I wasn’t familiar with any of the main stars of the miniseries, but Max Irons, who plays the husband, is the son of Jeremy Irons. He does a good job.

The main star of the show is Jemima Rooper, who plays Olivia (the aforementioned Grandma). She is excellent as the woman who starts out as the bookish maiden but becomes first a victim of horrible circumstances and then gets steely and strong (but ultimately, not very nice, I’m afraid).

You should check it out whether or not you like the “Flowers in the Attic” books or movies as it’s compelling drama (if a bit lurid at times).

Interview with Jemima Rooper, Max Irons, T’Shan Williams, Alana Boden and Paul Sciarrotta of “Flowers in the Attic: The Origin” on Lifetime 6/22/22

MORE INFORMATION:

Flowers in the Attic: The Origin tells the story of the headstrong and determined Olivia Winfield (Rooper) who is working alongside her beloved father (Hamlin) when she finds herself unexpectedly wooed by one of the nation’s most eligible bachelors, Malcom Foxworth (Irons). After a whirlwind romance, Olivia finds herself as the mistress of the imposing Foxworth Hall, where she soon discovers that the fairytale life she expected has quickly become a nightmare.  Under Malcolm’s debonair exterior lies a dark heart, and a twisted evil lurks inside Foxworth Hall that will threaten Olivia’s happiness and that of her children. Her attempts to keep them all safe ultimately push Olivia to become to most terrifying version of herself, leading to her inevitable—and notorious—decision to lock her grandchildren in the attic…
Elf Bar has recently introduced an exciting range of new flavors that elevate the vaping experience. Among these unique options, you’ll find the refreshing Watermelon Ice, the sweet and tangy Mango Peach, and the indulgent Creamy Vanilla. Each flavor offers a distinct taste profile, ensuring there’s something for every palate. Additionally, the zesty Lemon Tart and the rich Blueberry Pomegranate add variety to your vaping journey. With these new elf bar flavours, you can enjoy a delightful and flavorful experience every time you vape.
Dodd stars as Olivia’s daughter, Corinne; while Williams takes on the role Foxworth Hall’s longtime staff member and Olivia’s observant housekeeper, Nella. Mulgrew plays Mrs. Steiner, Malcom’s loyal house manager and head of the Foxworth Hall staff. Grammer portrays Malcom’s illustrious father Garland Foxworth, who is married to new wife Alicia, played by Boden. Wesley stars as John Amos, Olivia’s cousin whose revelations change her life forever and Callum Kerr stars as Christopher, a close relative of the Foxworth family whose life will be eternally intertwined with Corrine’s from the moment they set eyes on each other.

Review of “Moon Haven”

TV Review!

"Moonhaven" key art

“Moonhaven” on AMC+ Review by Suzanne 7/20/22

I really enjoy this show. It’s an original sci-fi show that creates an interesting world of the future. Because of the ways mankind has destroyed the Earth, a team of scientists and colonists were sent to the moon to terraform some of it (with the help of an AI) into Moon Haven and figure out a way to improve the Earth for everyone. Now the people on the moon are ready to bring their Utopian ideas back to earth, but some people on earth are skeptical. Others have their own selfish motives.

Bella Sway (Emma McDonald) is a pilot who is skeptical of everything, especially the lunars. Everything is discovered through her eyes. She meets an interesting bodyguard, Tomm (Joe Manganiello) and the famous Indira Mare (Amara Karan) who communicates with the AI. A woman is murdered on Moon Haven, and two detectives investigate. The two provide a lot of humor as well as some pathos, ably played by Dominic Monaghan (Paul) and Kadeem Hardison (Arlo). There are a lot of interesting characters, and many levels of intrigue. I think any scifi fan will enjoy it.

Right now it’s airing on AMC+, but it may move to regular AMC at some point (for those of you who still have cable TV). Check it out! You can see the first episode on YouTube for free.

Review of “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow – The Seventh and Final Season”

DVD Review!

"DC's Legends of Tomorrow - The Seventh and Final Season" DVD cover

“DC’s Legends of Tomorrow – The Seventh and Final Season” Review by Suzanne 7/20/22

I love this show and never miss it! I’m still very disappointed that it was canceled. I try to console myself with the fact that 7 seasons is a long time for any TV show, let alone one that is about superheroes and people who can do magic. What set this show apart from the others in the Arrowverse is the comedic tone they developed around season 3.  Now, personally, I loved the show before it became more of a comedy, and I preferred it more as a regular superhero show. I know I’m in the minority on this, though. Also, I really loved Rip Hunter, and the actor who played him (Arthur Darvill), so I was sad to see him go. This show has always had many characters coming and going. I think that may be one of the reasons that it’s been so low-rated. I think it was especially hard after Ray Palmer left because he was such a great character.  I was very happy when they brought in Constantine, though, as I love that character. I had watched his one-season NBC show, and so it was a great joy when they brought the same actor in to play him (Matt Ryan). I really wasn’t too fond of what they did last season and this season with Constantine and the actor, even though it did keep the actor around longer. At any rate, I did love the show and was sad to see it canceled, despite all of the changes.

I’m very glad to get this DVD set, so I can re-watch the episodes any time I want. Also, it has a few great features, such as highlights from the SDCC panels, unaired scenes, gag reels and a feature spotlighting the show’s 100th episode. I think you will love it, too. Make sure you go back and watch the first 6 seasons, though, or you may not appreciate this season as much.  There’s no question in my mind that what really made this show great was actress Caity Lotz, who played Sarah, the heroes’ leader throughout most of the series.  One final warning: The series does end on a bit of a cliffhanger. It’s nothing that would ruin the series, though. I like it when you can picture the show’s heroes continuing on long after the TV series is dead, and this finale does that (as “Supergirl” also did).

Primetime TV Review: “Generation Gap”

TV Review!

“Generation Gap” Review on ABC by Eva 7/8/2022

I am so glad summer is here because ABC has its summer game shows return to the network. The latest entry into the summer game show line up for ABC is Generation Gap. As the name implies, it highlights the gap between the older generation and the younger generation.

The object of the game is to find out how much trivia the younger generation knows about the older generation and vice versa. Kelly Rippa asks the teams trivia questions over several rounds of play and the team with the most money goes home with the cash and a special bonus prize. The teams are made up of grandparents and grandchildren or aunts and uncles with their nieces and nephews. The most fun part for me is laughing at the wrong answers that are given to the questions because you just can’t help yourself.

"Curb Your Enthusiasm: The Complete Eleventh Season" DVD cover

“Curb Your Enthusiasm: The Complete Eleventh Season” Review by Suzanne 6/10/21

This is my favorite comedy, since “Frasier” left the air. Yes, “Seinfeld” was very good, but I liked “Frasier” better. “Curb” is better than both. In part, that’s because it’s on HBO. Larry David can come up with these great ideas that would never have worked on broadcast TV.  This season, they had some great guest stars such as Jon Hamm and Tracey Ullman.  One of the new characters, Maria Sofia (Keyla Monterroso Mejia), is polarizing among fans. She’s both annoying and hilarious. More importantly, she makes Larry funnier.  Leon is also one of our favorite characters, and he continues to make us laugh uproariously.

I hope you can enjoy these episodes as much as we did. Each season is only 10 episodes, and it’s hard to wait between seasons while Larry comes up with the ideas and perfects them.

The DVD, unfortunately, doesn’t have any features or extras.  At least, though, you shouldn’t have too much trouble taking off the shrink wrap.

Review of “Eraser: Reborn”

DVD Review!

Eraser: Reborn (Blu-ray+Digital) DVD cover

“Eraser: Reborn” (Blu-ray+Digital) Review by Suzanne 6/1/22

If you’re a fan of action flicks, you’ll probably enjoy this low-budget movie. It’s a reboot of a 90’s movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Vanessa Williams, James Caan and other big names. I’m sure that was a much better movie. This one has a lot more technology. The movie is about a special FBI team that helps witnesses in WitSec get “erased” so they can stay alive.  It stars British actor Dominic Sherwood, who does a passable job here with an American accent; and Jacky Lai, who plays the woman being protected (or, erased). The script is not very interesting and everyone seems to mumble a lot. It does have a lot of shooting, running, chasing, etc.  There are some interesting twists and turns in the plot that you might not anticipate.

The DVD just has one feature about the making of the movie.

Primetime TV Review: “Don’t Forget the Lyrics!”

TV Review!

“Don’t Forget the Lyrics ” on FOX Review by Eva 5/30/2022

I love listening to music and singing along with songs even though I can’t sing. I also love game shows and since Don’t Forget the Lyrics combine the two things I enjoy, I thought I would watch the latest version of the show.

I had never seen the previous version of the show, so I didn’t know how it worked. Actress and comedienne Nancy Nash does a wonderful job hosting the show, she really roots for the contestants and wants them to win the money. The show works like this: contestants sing songs they pick from different categories listed on the screen; they are given part of the lyrics to the song but then they get blanks on the screen where they have to sing the exact words that are missing in the song. If they get the song right, they win money. If they get the lyrics wrong, the game ends. If they get the lyrics to ten songs right, they win $ 1 million.

I think this game show is fun to watch and it comes right before another of my favorite game shows, Beat Shazam in what Fox calls Music Mondays.

I give this show 5 out of 5 stars because it is fun and beats watching summer reruns of your favorite scripted shows

Review of “Constantine: The House of Mystery”

DVD Review!

Constantine: The House of Mystery DVD cover

“Constantine: The House of Mystery” Review by Suzanne 4/30/22

Although John Constantine and his story are in the title and cover of this DVD, it’s really four, short animated specials from DC Showcase (a comic book and DVD series). You’ll notice that at the very top of the DVD, in tiny letters, it says “DC Showcase Animated Shorts.”  I would buy it, anyway, just for the great Constantine story. I love this character and his portrayer, Matt Ryan.  They probably focused on the Constantine story because the character is more well known that the others.Kamandi - The Last Boy on Earth

This is a good story that takes place after the animated movie, “Justice League Dark: Apokolips War.” I haven’t seen that one, but now I’m going to have to watch it.  That one ends on a sad note, apparently, and “House of Mystery” begins with Constantine telling us about how he tried to reverse what happened, using magic, and with the help of The Flash. The Spectre then sends him to the house, where he’s tortured.  It’s a very good story. Unfortunately, it also has a sad ending, but it’s also not a very satisfying ending. I hope they make a sequel, so we can find out what really happened.  This story is a bit dark; I would not let a child watch it because it might be too scary for them. Teens should enjoy it, though.

The sec"The Losers"ond short is about Kamandi, The Last Boy on Earth. I used to read that comic back in the 70’s, so I’m happy to watch this short. It has a really cool ending that I loved, too.  Kamandi and his tiger friend Prince Tuftan are captured by a gorilla cult and forced to undergo a series of dangerous trials to determine if any of them is The Mighty One. It’s better than it sounds! Cameron Monaghan (“Gotham”) plays Kamandi. Each of these shorts is done in a different style.  The story here has a sort of Tarzan-meets-Planet-of-the-Apes vibe. It’s safe for kids, too.

The third short stars the WWII soldiers group called “The Losers.” I may have read some of their comics growing up. They sound vagueBlue Beetlely familiar. This cartoon is very violent. Many people and beasts are murdered. The ending is horrible. I can’t imagine why anyone would like it. The Losers and some Chinese soldiers crash on a mysterious island with dinosaurs. The best thing about this is the cast: Dean Winters plays Captain Storm; Ming-Na Wen plays Fan Long; and Eugene Byrd plays Henry ‘Mile a Minute’ Jones. I recognized WInters’ voice right away. I’ve interviewed both him and Byrd before, and Wen is always terrific. This fine cast is wasted, but at least the animation was done very well.

The last one is the most fun. “Blue Beetle” was made in a campy 60’s style that will remind you of cartoons you watched on Saturday morning, as well as shows like the original “Batman.” I really laughed out loud with this one. Blue Beetle is accompanied by a character called The Question. I don’t recall if I ever read Blue Beetle comics or not. He was around in the 30’s (long before my time) and then was in Charlton Comics in the 60’s, which I may or may not have read. This is the best of the four shorts. The Blue Beetle tries to apprehend some villains who stole a large diamond. The Question aids him in tracking it down. They deduce that Doctor Spectro is controlling the other bad guys and have to defeat him to save the world from his mind control.

There’s also a special feature that tells about the shorts and how they made them. It’s very interesting. You should check out this DVD as it’s worth having for any fan of comics or animation – especially DC fans.

CONSTANTINE – THE HOUSE OF MYSTERY
ANCHORS NEW COLLECTION OF
DC SHOWCASE ANIMATED SHORTS

COMPILATION SPOTLIGHTS KAMANDI, THE LOSERS & BLUE BEETLE;
COMING TO BLU-RAY™ AND DIGITAL ON 5/3/22

Warner Bros. Animation continues to glean beloved characters from DC’s robust library for the popular DC Showcase line of animated shorts, this time opting to elevate Constantine, Kamandi, The Losers, and Blue Beetle in the 2021-2022 compilation release, DC Showcase – Constantine: The House of Mystery. The R-rated shorts collection will be available from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment on Blu-ray (USA $24.99 SRP; Canada $29.99 SRP) and in 4K on Digital starting May 3, 2022.

Produced by Warner Bros. Animation, DC and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, and inspired by characters and stories from the iconic DC Universe, the all-new quartet of DC Showcase shorts are produced by Rick Morales (Mortal Kombat Legends franchise, Injustice). Jim Krieg is producer, and Sam Register is executive producer.

While Kamandi: The Last Boy on Earth!, The Losers and Blue Beetle have all appeared as enhanced content on past DC Universe Movies, the extended-length Constantine – The House of Mystery makes its public debut as the anchor for this dynamic shorts compilation.

Matt Ryan (Constantine, Legends of Tomorrow) reprises his live-action and animated role as the Hellblazer himself in Constantine – The House of Mystery. In the all-new short, John Constantine wakes up in the eerie House of Mystery with no recollection of how he got there. Fortunately, Zatanna and his friends are all there. Unfortunately, they have a bad habit of turning into demons and ripping him to shreds, over and over again! Camilla Luddington (Grey’s Anatomy) and Ray Chase (Licorice Pizza) reprise their roles from Justice League Dark: Apokolips War as Zatanna and Jason Blood/Etrigan, respectively, while Robin Atkin Downes (The Strain) and Damian O’Hare (Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl) reprise their roles from Constantine: City of Demons as Negral and Chas, respectively. In addition, Grey Griffin (Scooby-Doo franchise) and Lou Diamond Phillips (La Bamba, Longmire, Young Guns) join the cast of the short, which is directed by Matt Peters (Injustice) from a script by Ernie Altbacker (Batman: Hush).

Also included in the animated shorts collection are:

KAMANDI: THE LAST BOY ON EARTH!
Directed by Matt Peters (Justice League Dark: Apokolips War) from a script written by Paul Giacoppo (Young Justice, Star Wars: Resistance), Kamandi: The Last Boy on Earth! was initially released as a bonus feature on Justice Society: World War II in Spring 2021. Jack Kirby’s beloved DC comic creation features the last civilized teenage boy on a post-apocalyptic Earth ruled by talking animals. In this short, Kamandi and his friends Prince Tuftan of the Tiger Kingdom and humanoid mutant Ben Boxer are kidnapped by a gorilla cult dedicated to finding the reincarnation of their god, The Mighty One. Golgan, the cult’s leader, puts Kamandi’s team through a series of deadly tests to find if any of them know the secret of The Mighty One. The thriller features the voices of Cameron Monaghan (Gotham, Shameless) as Kamandi, Steve Blum (Star Wars: Rebels, Cowboy Bebop, Naruto franchise) as Golgan & Tuftan, Adam Gifford (Masters of the Universe: Revelation) as Zuma, and Armen Taylor (Justice Society: World War II) as Ben Boxer.

THE LOSERS
The legendary rag-tag team of World War II outcasts – Captain Storm, Johnny Cloud, “Mile-a-Minute” Jones, rookie Gunner and Sarge – find themselves marooned on an uncharted island in the South Pacific that is completely overrun with dinosaurs! Their would-be ally on this deadly mission, the mysterious and beautiful Fan Long of the Chinese Security Agency, tells them their job is to rescue the scientists that have been sent to study a time/space anomaly. Perhaps… but what is her mission? Ming-Na Wen (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., The Book of Boba Fett) leads the cast as the mysterious Fan. Along for the journey is Dean Winters (John Wick, 30 Rock) as Captain Storm, Dave B. Mitchell (Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms) as Gunner & Sarge, Eugene Byrd (Bones, Arrow) as Mile-a-Minute Jones, and Martin Sensmeier (Westworld, The Magnificent Seven) as Johnny Cloud. Initially included as a bonus feature on Batman: The Long Halloween, Part One, The Losers is directed by Milo Neuman (LEGO DC Comics Super Heroes: The Flash) from a script by Tim Sheridan (Batman: The Long Halloween).

BLUE BEETLE
Sufferin’ Scarabs! Silver Age Blue Beetle is back! And had he ever starred in a 1960s Saturday-morning limited-animation cartoon with its own jazzy earworm of a theme song, it would have been just like this short! Welcome to the adventures of Ted Kord, alias the Blue Beetle, as he teams up with fellow Super Heroes Captain Atom, The Question and Nightshade to battle that nefarious finagler of feelings, Doctor Spectro. Matt Lanter (Timeless, Star Wars: The Clone Wars, 90210) stars as Blue Beetle alongside Jeff Bennett (Johnny Bravo, Curious George) as Captain Atom & Pops, Ashly Burch (The Ghost and Molly McGee) as Nightshade, David Kaye (Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe) as The Question, and Tom Kenny (SpongeBob SquarePants) as Dr. Spectro. Originally attached to Batman: The Long Halloween, Part Two, Blue Beetle is directed by Milo Neuman (Freedom Fighters: The Ray) from a screenplay by Jennifer Keene (Phineas and Ferb) based on a story by Jeremy Adams (Mortal Kombat Legends franchise).

Launched in 2010, DC Showcase was originally comprised of four animated shorts: The Spectre (2/23/2010), Jonah Hex (7/27/2010), Green Arrow (9/28/2010) and Superman/Shazam: The Return of Black Adam (11/9/2010). An additional short, Catwoman (10/18/2011), was attached the following year to the release of Batman: Year One. For 2019-2020, DC Showcase returned with five shorts: Sgt. Rock (8/6/2019) Death (10/22/2019), The Phantom Stranger (3/17/2020), Adam Strange (5/19/2020), and the interactive Batman: Death in the Family (10/13/2020).

DC Showcase: Constantine – The House of Mystery – Special Features
Blu-ray and Digital
• DC Showcase: One Story at a Time (New Featurette) – Since the 1993 debut of Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, Warner Bros. Animation has revolutionized and mastered the feature film world with their critically successful DC Universe Movies and DC Animated Movies. In 2010, the creative team hit upon the idea of presenting some of the more under-utilized DC characters in shorter stories – and thus, the DC Showcase was born. The shorts program has provided a fertile venue for creators and animators to explore the vast array of DC’s diverse heroes, worlds and universes, and gives audiences a taste of their infinite possibilities. Featuring some big names as well as the deeper cuts, these short films reflect different styles and sensibilities, and are inspired by renown creators like Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko and Alan Moore. This documentary takes a look at the roots of DC Showcase – from Catwoman and Sgt. Rock to Death and Superman/Shazam: The Return of Black Adam, as well as the current quartet of shorts. Included are interviews with producer Rick Morales and directors Matt Peters & Milo Neuman as they explore the featured heroes and villains, the comics that inspired them, and these adventures’ place in the bigger picture of the DC animated universe.

Review of “Aquaman: King of Atlantis”

DVD Review!

Aquaman: King of Atlantis DVD cover

“Aquaman: King of Atlantis ” Review by Suzanne 4/20/22

This is a good miniseries for kids. As someone who grew up reading comics, I didn’t enjoy it. It’s too silly. It’s a kids’ cartoon. Also, I’m not a huge fan of this style of animation.  It’s definitely a good series for kids or teens. The voice actors do a good job, and the animation has a lot of wonderful detail. We’ve never really seen this much of the world of Atlantis before. We only saw a little bit of it in the “Aquaman” movie.

I wish they would do more of the Aquaman animated movies, like “Justice League: Throne of Atlantis.” That was a good one.  They need to give Aquaman his own animated movie, though. I know that many people like to make fun of the character, but growing up, I never had any problem with him or thought that he was comical. Jokes aside, he can do a lot more than “talk to fish!” He has that trident (just as powerful as Thor’s hammer, if you ask me), and he’s very strong, fast and smart – almost as much as Superman. He can breathe in multiple environments and has super hearing as well as SONAR abilities. He’s certainly not the boob portrayed in this cartoon.

The DVD does not come with any extras or features, unfortunately. I’m sure the kids won’t care. They’ll probably watch it on HBOMAX if their parents can afford it. Otherwise, the DVD is a great alternative.

EPIC MINI-SERIES COMES TO DIGITAL & DVD

AS A FULL-LENGTH ANIMATED MOVIE ON APRIL 26, 2022

BURBANK, CA (March 24, 2022) – Monstrous creatures, devious foes and incredible underwater adventures populate Aquaman: King of Atlantis, an action-packed mini-series now coming to Digital and DVD (USA $14.99 SRP; Canada $19.99 SRP) as a feature-length animated film on April 26, 2022 courtesy of Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.

Produced by Warner Bros. Animation, the mini-series premiered on HBO Max on October 14 to rave reviews from both critics and fans alike. James Wan (Aquaman) served as executive producer through his Atomic Monster production company on this playful reimagining of the iconic DC Super Hero and tells an original tale about Aquaman’s first adventures as King of Atlantis.

Aquaman: King of Atlantis begins with Aquaman starting his first day on the job as king of Atlantis – and he’s got a lot of catching up to do. Luckily, he has his two royal advisors to back him up: the scholar Vulko, and Mera, the water controlling warrior princess. Between dealing with unscrupulous surface dwellers, elder evils from beyond time and his own half-brother who wants to overthrow him, Aquaman must rise to the challenge and prove to his subjects – and to himself – that he’s the true heir to the throne, and holder of the trident!

Cooper Andrews (The Walking Dead, Shazam!) leads the cast of Aquaman: King of Atlantis as the title character, and he’s joined by Gillian Jacobs (Community, Invincible, Injustice) as Mera, Thomas Lennon (Supergirl, Reno 911!) as Vulko, Dana Snyder (Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Justice League Action) as Ocean Master, Andrew Morgado (Supergirl, Archer) as Mortikov, Kevin Michael Richardson (The Simpsons, American Dad!) as the Royal Announcer, Flula Borg (The Suicide Squad, Pitch Perfect 2) as Mantis, and Kimberly Brooks (DC Super Hero Girls, Batwheels) as Hammer. Also providing voices is Chris Jai Alex, Trevor Devall, Armen Taylor, Kaitlyn Robrock, Regi Davis, Ludi Lin, Robbie Daymond, Erica Lindbeck, Laila Berzins and Erica Ash.

Victor Courtright (ThunderCats Roar!) and Marly Halpern-Graser (Batman vs. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) served as showrunners and co-executive producers. Courtright and Marly Halpern-Graser conceived the story for the mini-series/film, and Halpern-Graser, Bryan Condon (Right Now Kapow) and Laura Sreebny (She-Ra and the Princesses of Power) co-wrote the teleplay. The mini-series was executive produced by James Wan (Aquaman), Atomic Monster’s Michael Clear (Annabelle Comes Home), Rob Hackett (Swamp Thing), and Sam Register (Teen Titans Go!). Keith Pakiz (ThunderCats Roar) served as director on all three episodes of the mini-series.

Primetime TV Review: “Fallen Angels Murder Club: Friends to Die For”

TV Review!

“Fallen Angels Murder Club: Friends to Die For” Review on 4/6/2022

by Eva

I enjoy watching mystery movies so when I saw the commercial for Lifetime’s movie Fallen Angels Murder Club Friends to Die For, I wanted to watch it. Friends to Die For is the first of two Lifetime movies based on the Fallen Angels Murder Club book series written by R. Franklin James.

I saw the first movie Friends to Die For starring Toni Braxton as Hollis Morgan an ex-convict trying to start a new life after serving time in jail for a crime she didn’t commit. Hollis joins a book club which is made up of other ex-convicts trying to restart their lives. This part of the movie was the most interesting to me… the close friendships that the book club forms with each other based on their shared experience of having spent time in jail and their love of reading murder mysteries. I won’t ruin the mystery for you it was a pretty good one. As always, the book club solves the mystery while the police can’t figure it out.

I liked this movie a lot, although with most mystery movies, I wish that the police were smarter but I am looking forward to watching the second movie Heroes and Felons airing on Lifetime on Saturday April 9, 2022.

I give the first movie Friends to Die For 4 out of 5 stars because it had some parts of it that were silly to me, but again this is my opinion and as I said I will be watching the second movie.

DVD Review!

Rick and Morty: Season 5 [Blu-ray Steelbook] cover

“Rick and Morty: Season 5 [Blu-ray Steelbook]” Review by Suzanne 3/29/22

This is not my favorite cartoon. To me, the humor is juvenile and the art is even worse. I know that a lot of people love it, though (and not just kids). This steelbook Blu-ray version is really nice and should last a long time. It has a beautiful cover as well.

The features are worth talking about. There are ten episodes and many special features. Anyone who loves this show will go ga-ga over this kick-ass edition. Besides the Blu-ray, there is also a code, so you can watch it online. It’s definitely worth getting this, as well as the other version that has seasons 1-5, if you’re a fan of the show or a collector.

This has always been a fun and entertaining show. Credit for that goes to the writers and their sparkling dialogue and inventive stories, as well as the charm of star Tom Ellis. The show keeps you guessing about what is really going on. Is it a supernatural show? Is it a soap opera? Is it a cop show? Or is it all of those? Yet, unlike other shows which try to be more than one thing at a time, it doesn’t ever falter or get confusing.

I watched these episodes, even though I’ve only seen the first episode of the entire series, yet I was not lost or confused. It’s very easy to just pick up these set and enjoy it. Check it out!

Unfortunately, for a DVD set, it is lacking in features. All they have are the deleted scenes and the gag reel. If you like that sort of thing, you might wait until the show is over and get the “complete series” set, where they’ll probably have more options.

"Rick and Morty Seasons 1 - 5" DVD cover

“Rick and Morty Seasons 1 – 5” Review by Suzanne 3/25/22

This is a very popular show, but it’s never been one of my favorites. I don’t like the animation, for one thing. I find this type of animation too crude and gross for my tastes. However, the animation style is similar to the style of humor as well. I’m probably just the wrong age to enjoy it because younger people are the ones that love it.

If you’re a fan of the show, you will no doubt love this 5-season set. on regular DVD or Blu-ray. It is a huge set that has many features for each season. It is well worth the price.  However, since the show is still running, you might want to save your money and wait until the whole series finishes to buy the big set. If you’re a serious collector, though, you’ll want both.

Review of “Adventure Time: Distant Lands”

DVD Review!

Adventure Time: Distant Lands DVD cover

“Adventure Time: Distant Lands” Review by Suzanne 3/1/22

There was an animated children’s fantasy cartoon that ran on Cartoon Network for 8 seasons…so it was very successful. This series, “Distant Lands” are four hour-long specials that aired on HBO Max 2020-2021.

It is a very strange series, with a lot of oddball humor. If you’re an adult with a weird sense of humor, you’ll probably enjoy it as much as the kids do.

I have the Blu-ray version. There are no features or extras, which is a shame. I would have liked to have heard about the making of this special series. I’m sure the fans would have, too. Fortunately you can find plenty of behind-the-scenes videos on YouTube!

Review of “Supergirl: The Sixth & Final Season” [Blu-ray]

DVD Review!

Supergirl: The Sixth & Final Season [Blu-ray] DVD cover

“Supergirl: The Sixth & Final Season” [Blu-ray] Review by Suzanne 3/1/22

I love this show, but the constant cast changes has been difficult. The low ratings didn’t help things, I’m sure. This was the final year, which was disappointing. It would have been nice to see it go at least 8 seasons, like “Arrow” did. I think the “fan boys” had trouble with the fact that Supergirl stopped showing off her legs, and the show had lesbians and a transgender superheroine, and dealt with issues such as immigration and climate change. It’s a shame because I felt they did it well.

I watched this show every year, so I’m happy to own all of the DVDs as well. The villains are always good, and the heroes are even better. I feel that the show’s finale was the best in the Arrowverse so far. I was very relieved that they didn’t kill off Supergirl or any of her friends. It’s nice to think of them still out there, fighting against evil.  There are 20 episodes, so there is plenty to watch and enjoy.

The DVD only has two features: A special called “A Farewell Tribute to Supergirl,” which is very good, and some deleted scenes (more details below).

“The Batman: The Complete Series” (2004) (Blu-ray + Digital) Review by Suzanne 2/25/22

This is one of the best Batman animated series. The first great series was “Batman: The Animated Series,” which ran from 1992-1995. It was groundbreaking in terms of animation, story and Batman mythos. This series was also very good, but they did a completely different take on Batman. This Batman is younger. Batman, Alfred, Robin, Barbara and The Penguin are not big name actors, but they do a fantastic job. Rino Romano is great as Bruce/Batman. Alastair Duncan voices Alfred, who is very droll. Most of the rest ARE voiced by actors you’ve heard of, such as Ming-Na Wen, Mitch Pileggi, Gina Gershon, and Jason Marsden.

They really do a fantastic job of bringing out all of the characters and their personalities.  If you haven’t seen this one, you should. It would also make a great gift.  The Blu-ray version has many great features that I enjoyed watching.  The new featurette, “The Dark Dynasty Continues,” explains all about the making of the series. It’s really informative and interesting.
