“Coyote” on CBS All Access Review by Suzanne 1/9/21

This is a very good and compelling drama. It definitely kept me glued to the screen. It has a tight script and very good acting. Michael Chiklis (who’s always so good) stars as Ben, a retiring border patrol agent who gets caught up with gangs down in Mexico. The premise may sound far-fetched, but they make the story work. Also, I expected Chiklis’ Ben to be as corrupt as his character on “The Shield,” but he’s not.

Ben is a hard-working border cop who has clearly put everything into his job, since he has an ex-wife and college-aged daughter (and he doesn’t seem to have any friends outside of work). He’s not happy about retiring. He makes a big bust on his last day. Later, he goes down to a Tijuana because his late partner, Javi, bought some beach property down there and was fixing it up for his family (presumably to retire to). Ben wants to help out Javi’s widow by fixing it up to sell. He’s a guy who’s just trying to do the right thing, but he doesn’t seem to be very equipped at life outside his job.

If you liked “Breaking Bad,” then you’ll probably love this show as well. Honestly, I don’t like these types of shows where the protagonist ends up being a bad guy or breaking the law, but at least Ben is a good, honest cop (at the beginning). There have been so many shows like now: Weeds, Ozark, Claws, and Good Girls. Few are as good as this, though.

Nicolas Cage in "History of Swear Words" on Netflix

“History of Swear Words” on Netflix Review by Suzanne 1/9/21

This seemed like a cute idea, but it’s not all that interesting or funny. Nicolas Cage puts on a robe and stands in a stuffy-looking study to pretend to be hosting some pretentious show, like Masterpiece on PBS. Instead, each episode is about a new curse word. “Fuck” is the first episode. Besides Cage, there are comedians (like Jim Jefferies and Sarah Silverman) that talk about the word, and experts who talk about the history of the word. They show a lot of video clips to illustrate what they’re talking about.

If you like shows like “Drunk History,” then this may be more your kind of thing than mine. I found it disappointing. The only thing I can think of is that writer Bellamie Blackstone must have been really bored while on pandemic lockdown to come up with this idea…I don’t know why this project went forward, since all he’s done before is produce game shows and hasn’t written much….and it shows.

MORE INFORMATION:

Nicolas Cage hosts this proudly profane series that explores the history and impact of some of the most notorious bad words in the English language.

Gabby's Dollhouse on Netflix

“Gabby’s Dollhouse” on Netflix Review by Suzanne 1/9/21

This is a children’s show that combines live action with animation. Gabby (Laila Lockhart Kraner) is a young girl who loves cats. Besides her real-life cat and all of her cat-themed possessions in her bedroom, she has a cat-themed dollhouse. She’s able to magically shrink herself and go into the dollhouse (where she becomes animated) to play with her stuffed cat friends, like Pandy Paws (Tucker Chandler) and Pillow Cat (Sainty Nelsen).

The show is fun and kids should enjoy it. It has a lot of good energy, creativity, and music, as well as lessons about cooperation, baking, and more. It’s by Dreamworks, so you know that the animation and special effects are top notch. In each episode, Gabby brings out a new story or adventure. In real life, many kids like to watch “unboxing” videos on YouTube, where someone opens a new boxes of toys. The writers took that concept and made it so that Gabby is “unboxing” a new story. It’s very clever.

MORE INFORMATION:

Cute cats, quirky crafts and colorful magic! Join kitty enthusiast Gabby and her sidekick Pandy Paws as they team up for a series of animated adventures.

Primetime TV Review: “Mr. Mayor”

TV Review!

Mr. Mayor cast

“Mr. Mayor” on NBC Review by Suzanne 1/9/21

This show is created by Tina Fey and her writing/producing partner Robert Carlock (who also did “30 Rock,” “Good News” and “The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”) and stars Ted Danson (“The Good Stuff,” “Cheers”). However, it’s not as funny as it could be. I watched the first two episodes. The second episode was funnier (where the Mayor gets stoned), so you do need to stick with it to enjoy it. It’s no “30 Rock” or “The Good Place,” though.

Danson stars as the new mayor of Los Angeles, Neil Bremer. He’s a former retired local businessman, widowed, that got into the race after the previous mayor flamed out in that last horrible year, 2020. Holly Hunter plays a sarcastic city councilwoman, Arpi Meskimen. She reminds me a bit of Tig Notaro’s character in “Star Trek: Discovery.” Mikaela Shaw plays Vella, the mayor’s chief of staff. Others in the mayor’s staff include Mike (Tommy Tomás) and a really annoying dumb guy, Jayden (Bobby Moynihan).

The joke of the show is that the mayor knows nothing about politics, and they’re all worried about what dumb things he’ll do, but really, he’s a bit more savvy than they give him credit for because he’s good with people. He’s softened a bit by his teen daughter, Orly (Kyla Kenedy).

Unless the show gets a lot funnier, I doubt it’ll be a hit. Hunter and Danson are both way too good to be in this sitcom.

MORE INFORMATION:

“Mr. Mayor” follows a retired businessman (Ted Danson) who runs for mayor of Los Angeles to prove he’s “still got it.” Once he wins, he has to figure out what he stands for, gain the respect of his biggest critic (Holly Hunter) and connect with his teenage daughter, all while trying to get anything right for America’s second weirdest city. At our store, we proudly offer the Elf Bar, which promises a smooth and flavorful vaping experience that captivates both newcomers and seasoned enthusiasts alike. With the holiday season approaching, the elf bar advent calendar is the perfect way to explore a variety of delicious flavors while enjoying the convenience of vaping.
The series stars Ted Danson, Holly Hunter, Vella Lovell, Mike Cabellon, Kyla Kenedy and Bobby Moynihan.
“Mr. Mayor” is produced by Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, Little Stranger, Bevel Gears and 3 Arts Entertainment. Robert Carlock, Tina Fey, Jeff Richmond and David Miner will executive produce. Eric Gurian will serve as a co-executive producer.

Primetime TV Review: “30 Coins”

TV Review!

30 Coins' Montaner and Silvestre

“30 Coins” on HBO Review by Suzanne 1/9/21

If you like horror (not just the gross-out kind), you should love this show. It’s in Spanish, though, so you do have to pay attention if you’re not a native speaker and you’re watching the English subtitles. This show really grabbed me right at the beginning. They don’t play around. The first thing you see is horrible, and more terrible things follow. The show reminds me a bit of the Exorcist TV series, but it’s got even more shocks. There’s very little that’s subtle here; however, they do have a lot of surprises.

The heroine of the show is Elena (Megan Montaner), a veterinarian who witnesses some horrific things. Paco (Miguel Ángel Silvestre) is the handsome mayor of their small town. He runs a butchering plant and was pushed into running by his domineering wife (Macarena Gómez). Paco is called when something really weird happens with Elena and this newborn baby.

The other main character is Padre Vergara (Eduard Fernández), who’s new to town. He has a history with exorcism. He claims that he doesn’t believe in the devil any more, but we know that he’s seen otherwise. He’s called in by Paco about the baby.

The 30 coins in the title refers to the pieces of silver given to Judas. The show’s “theme song” shows Christ’s crucifixion, and then Judas’ hanging, in vivid detail. Apparently the devil (or someone in Hell) wants the coins back, but they’re scattered all over the world.

I’m really trying hard not to post a spoiler here because it’s important, in a horror movie, not to spoil the really terrifying, shocking or gruesome things that happen. I’ll just say that there is plenty to be had, and all I watched was the first episode. I watched it late at night, so I had to watch a couple of lighter shows afterwards, to make sure I didn’t have nightmares. Watch this in the daytime. It’s very compelling.

MORE INFORMATION:

Directed and co-written by acclaimed horror master Álex de la Iglesia (The Day of the Beast, The Last Circus), 30 Coins takes viewers into a world where nothing is as it seems, and nobody can be trusted.

The eight-episode drama series follows Father Vergara (Eduard Fernández), an exorcist, boxer, and ex-convict who is exiled by the church to be the priest of a remote town in Spain. As his past and old enemies come back to haunt him, strange things begin to happen. An unlikely task force forms as Mayor Paco (Miguel Ángel Silvestre) and local vet Elena (Megan Montaner) seek the truth, while reality is distorted by a cursed coin which is at the heart of a global conspiracy.

30 Coins is co-written by Álex de la Iglesia and Jorge Guerricaechevarría. Executive producers for HBO Europe are Steve Matthews, Miguel Salvat, and Antony Root. Álex de la Iglesia and Carolina Bang are executive producers for Pokeepsie Films. The series was produced with participation from HBO Latin America.

Primetime TV Review: “Name That Tune” (2021)

TV Review!

“Name That Tune (2021)” on Fox Review by Eva 1/9/2021

I was excited to learn that the game show Name that Tune was getting an update and would air on Fox. Broadway, film, and television star Jane Krakowski hosts the show and musician and former American Idol judge Randy Jackson directs the band and singers.

In the first round of the game, two contestants play against each other guessing songs from topics they choose from a list. The second round is called Bd A Note where contestants bid against each other to see in how many notes they can guess a song. If the contestant who wins the bet can guess the song, he wins money. If the contestant is unable to guess the song the other contestant gets ten notes to guess the song and if they are correct they win the money. The person who has the most money at the end of the two rounds goes to the Golden Medley round where they can win $ 100,000 if they guess seven songs correctly. Jane and Randy have great chemistry together and are truly rooting for the contestants to win the game.

I think the show is fun to watch and you will have fun playing along with the game to see if you can guess the songs along with the contestants. I think this will be a big hit and one of the strongest games in the Fox game show line up. I give the show a 5 out of 5 stars you will really enjoy this show.

Primetime TV Review: “The Chase”

TV Review!

“The Chase” on ABC Review by Eva 1/9/2021

I was very excited when I saw the commercial for the game show The Chase because I am a big fan of the previous version of the show which still airs in reruns on the Game Show Network (GSN) and is also streaming on Hulu.

Three contestants take on a trivia genius who is The Chaser. One at a time each contestant builds up cash in the cash builder round. Once the cash builder round is complete, then the contestant takes on the Chaser. The Chaser offers the contestant a low offer for the contestant to start the Chase closer to the bank or the contestant could start the Chase in the middle of the board and take the money they earned toward the bank or if he takes the chasers high offer the contestant risks giving the Chaser an easier way to catch them. The contestant and the Chaser answer trivia questions head to head and if the contestant gets the question right they take their money closer to the bank. If the Chaser also gets the question right he also moves down the board. If the contestant is caught by the Chaser the contestant is eliminated from the game and he loses his money. The other two contestants continue the game and whichever contestants beat the Chaser they bank their money and go to the Final Chase where they take on the Chaser one more time for the chance to take home the money in the bank.

This new version of the game is hosted by Sarah Haines and the Chasers are Jeopardy! champions Ken Jennings, James Holzhauer, and Brad Rutter I enjoyed the show very much, but I would have enjoyed it more if the show had a better host because Sarah Haines is too serious to host a game show. She doesn’t appear to care if the contestants win or not because she doesn’t cheer them on or support them. I hope that in future episodes she loosens up and starts to be more supportive of the contestants. I advise you to watch the previous version of The Chase and you will notice the difference between the two shows. I give this show 4 out of 5 stars

Primetime TV Review: “Call Me Kat”

Call Me Kat on FOX

“Call Me Kat” on FOX Review by Suzanne 1/9/21

Mayam Bialik (“Big Bang Theory”) stars as a 39-year-old single woman, Kat, who loves cats. She has social anxiety and opened her own Cat Café. In other words, she’s supposed to be a lovable dork. Other characters in this show include Max (Cheyenne Jackson), a man Kat used to have a crush on in high school; her good friend Tara (Vanessa Lachey); her mother (Swoosie Kurtz), who likes to nag her; a bartender she knows, Carter (Julian Gant); and people that work in her cat cafe: Randi (Kyla Pratt) and Phil (Leslie Jordan). Leslie Jordan is always funny, especially if he has good material. I’m sad to say that’s not really the case here.

Kat is a very different character than probably any others you’ve seen Bialik play before. She’s an excellent actress, but this show is not right for her. In an annoying plot device, she talks to the audience a lot. I really hate shows that do this. Kat is very animated and often makes wild gestures, which end up with her accidentally hitting or kicking someone or something. She’s supposed to be very awkward, but frankly…. I just don’t think it works. There aren’t enough jokes in the show to make me laugh.

MORE INFORMATION:

New comedy CALL ME KAT, starring Emmy Award nominee Mayim Bialik (“The Big Bang Theory”), and executive-produced by Bialik, Emmy Award-nominated producer Jim Parsons (“The Big Bang Theory,” “The Boys in the Band”) and Darlene Hunt (“The Big C”), will have a special series premiere Sunday, Jan. 3 (8:00-8:30 PM ET/PT), following the NFL ON FOX doubleheader. The series then makes its time period premiere with an all-new episode Thursday, Jan. 7 (9:00-9:30 PM ET/PT). Based on the BBC UK original series “Miranda,” CALL ME KAT stars Bialik as a woman who struggles every day against society and her mother to prove that she can still live a happy and fulfilling life despite being single at 39.  Which is why she recently spent her entire savings to open a cat café in Louisville, Kentucky. It was expected of KAT (Bialik) to be married with kids by now, but for many reasons, she’s still single – and totally fine with it. Of course, Kat’s mother, SHEILA (Emmy Award winner and Golden Globe nominee Swoosie Kurtz, “Mike & Molly,” “Sisters”), views her daughter’s single-hood as her own personal failure, but Kat remains determined to live a fulfilling life, and charts her own course to happiness. Working alongside Kat at the café are RANDI (Kyla Pratt, “One on One”), a confident millennial and self-proclaimed “non” cat person; and PHIL (Emmy Award winner Leslie Jordan, “The Cool Kids,” “Will & Grace”), who recently broke up with his longtime partner. Although Kat celebrates her independence, her single-forever plans may begin to veer off-course, when her former crush and good friend, MAX (Cheyenne Jackson, “American Horror Story,” “30 Rock”), returns to town and takes a job as a bartender at the piano bar across the street, working with his friend, CARTER (Julian Gant, “Good Girls”).  CALL ME KAT is produced by That’s Wonderful Productions, Sad Clown Productions and BBC Studios’ Los Angeles production arm in association with Warner Bros. Television and FOX Entertainment. Darlene Hunt is the executive producer and showrunner. Additionally, Jim Parsons, Todd Spiewak (That’s Wonderful Productions), Mayim Bialik (Sad Clown Productions), Miranda Hart, Angie Stephenson (BBC Studios) and Beth McCarthy-Miller also serve as executive producers. McCarthy-Miller directed the series premiere.

Primetime TV Review: “The Watch”

TV Review!

The Watch on BBC America

“The Watch” on BBCA Review by Suzanne 1/9/21

This is a weird scifi show, loosely based on fantasy author Terry Pratchett’s “Discworld” series. I don’t generally like TV series where everything is grimy and disgusting, and where the people are terrible and lawless. However, there is a lot to enjoy about this series, so it’s worth watching for that. If you like scifi/fantasy – especially Dystopian – you should enjoy this. There are elements of steampunk as well.

Richard Dormer plays Sam Vimes, a washed-up police detective, in this fantasy world where humans live alongside dwarves, imps, werewolves, dragons and more. We see most of the action from his POV. The first episode appears to be mostly in flashback as he’s chatting with the devil. I’m not sure if the rest of the show is also in flashback or not. Like I said, it’s a weird show! When Vimes was young, he had been in a gang, and his friend there, Carcer Dun (Samuel Adewunmi), had him infiltrate the police department in order to tear it apart. Instead, Vimes was recruited by the police department and liked it, so Dun shot the police Captain John Keel (Hakeem Kae-Kazim), and then Vimes fought with him. Dun ends up falling from a large height, so everyone assumed he’s dead.

In the present, Vimes is a serious alcoholic. The police (The Watch) don’t chase criminals any more. It’s explained that in order to cut down on all the crime, criminals now have to join a Guild and leave a receipt if they steal something, kill someone, etc. The Watch can only pursue minor crimes, such as missing library books and pets, unless someone commits a crime and isn’t part of a Guild.

We meet all of the members of The Watch, which includes newbie-from-out-of-town Carrot (Adam Hugill); Angua (who looks like a goth but is really a werewolf), played by Marama Corlett; Cheery (Jo Eaton-Kent), a transgender forensics expert; and Sergeant Detritus (Ralph Ineson), who looks a lot like a cross between the Fantastic Four’s Thing and the adult Groot.

Vimes thinks he sees Dun, so he chases after him and finds more mystery (of course) and a strange woman named Lady Sybil Ramkin (Lara Rossi). Meanwhile, Carrot has discovered a dead body that was not killed by a Guild member, so the others have that new mystery to solve.

The acting and writing are very good. There is a lot of plot here, but it’s not too hard to follow unless you’re really not paying attention. The show has a lot of mystery, humor, fantasy, action and more.

BBC AMERICA GREENLIGHTS ORIGINAL SCRIPTED SERIES THE WATCH

New Punk Rock Thriller is Based on Sir Terry Pratchett’s “Discworld” Novels

New York – October 31, 2018 – On the heels of hit series Killing Eve and the introduction of the first female Doctor on Doctor Who, BBC AMERICA announced today the greenlight of the new original scripted series, The Watch, based on Sir Terry Pratchett’s wildly popular “Discworld” novels, which have sold more than 90 million books worldwide. The (8 x 60) series is produced by BBC Studios for BBC AMERICA. The Watch is distributed by BBC Studios.

The Watch is a punk rock thriller inspired by the legendary ‘City Watch’ subset of “Discworld” novels. This disruptive, character-driven thriller centers on Terry Pratchett’s misfit cops as they fight to save a ramshackle city of normalized wrongness, from both the past and future in a perilous quest. Modern and inclusive, The Watch features many famous “Discworld” creations including City Watch Captain Sam Vimes, the last scion of nobility Lady Sybil Ramkin, the naïve but heroic Carrot, the mysterious Angua and the ingenious non-binary forensics expert Cheery together with Terry Pratchett’s iconic characterization of Death.

The Watch was commissioned for BBC AMERICA by President and GM Sarah Barnett, and Nena Rodrigue, EVP of Original Programming, Acquisitions and Production. Co-produced with Narrativia and written by Simon Allen (The Musketeers, Das Boot and New Tricks), The Watch is executive produced by Hilary Salmon (Luther, Silent Witness and Three Girls), Ben Donald for BBC Studios and Rob Wilkins for Narrativia. Phil Collinson (Doctor Who) also joins the team as executive producer.

The Watch has been startlingly reimagined for television by writer Simon Allen, while still cleaving to the humor, heart and ingenuity of Terry Pratchett’s incomparably original work,” commented BBC AMERICA President, Sarah Barnett. “BBC AMERICA embraces what’s fresh and exhilarating in TV; we believe The Watch will astonish audiences.”

Writer Simon Allen said: “With events in our own world making the insanity of ‘Discworld’ seem outrageously familiar, there couldn’t be a better time to bring Terry’s fun, fire and fury back to the small screen or a better place than BBC AMERICA. I’m grateful to them, BBC Studios and especially Rob Wilkins at Narrativia who has been a constant source of inspiration on this epic and emotional journey.”

Hilary Salmon, Executive Producer and Head of BBC Studios Drama Production London, said: “The Watch is a distinctly British but defiantly global exhilarating thriller that is disruptive in its approach to the fantasy genre and also big on the themes of mortality, inclusion, alternative facts and justice. It’s a dizzying riot of hope, joy, suspense and audaciously dark humor. We can’t wait to work with BBC AMERICA to bring it all to life for existing fans and brand new audiences.”

Rob Wilkins, Executive Producer and Managing Director of Narrativia, said: “Many years ago Terry made the brave decision to allow brand new Watch stories to be told with his existing characters. It’s taken a long time for anything to happen because we guard these characters with our very lives! So many of Terry’s biggest ideas seem more vital and urgent now than ever before and I am thrilled to be working with Simon and such a talented team, who understand the unique genius of their creator. They have really keyed into the subversive qualities of Terry’s voice and they clearly adore ‘Discworld’ as much as I and millions of fans around the world do.”

The new series joins an outstanding offering of original scripted programming at BBC AMERICA including the Emmy®-nominated Killing Eve starring Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer, the iconic series Doctor Who starring Jodie Whittaker, and the Golden Globe®-winning Luther starring Idris Elba.

BBC Studios produces multi-award-winning dramas loved by audiences around the world, including Doctor Who, Luther and War and Peace. It works with the best established and new drama talent, from writers and directors to on-screen talent, to create original, bold and ambitious British drama. BBC Studios is also making Good Omens, based on the Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman novel, co-produced with Narrativia, The Blank Corporation and Amazon.

BBC AMERICA is a hub of innovative, culturally contagious programming including the critically acclaimed series Killing Eve starring Emmy®-nominee Sandra Oh, Jodie Comer and from Emmy®-nominee Phoebe Waller-Bridge; top-rated phenomenon Doctor Who starring Jodie Whittaker; Emmy® and IDA-winning Planet Earth II and the producers’ next epic story of our planet, Dynasties; Emmy®-winning Blue Planet II; acclaimed drama Luther starring Golden Globe®-winner Idris Elba; ground-breaking unscripted series Top Gear; buzzy and hilarious The Graham Norton Show; and the world’s biggest darts championships. Primetime TV Review: “The Hustler”

TV Review!

“The Hustler” Review by Eva 1/7/2021

The Hustler is the latest game show on ABC, but it is a bit different than other game shows because it mixes trivia questions with some detective work.

There are five contestants but one of the five knows all the answers to the trivia questions because the questions are based on that contestant’s personal likes, dislikes, and habits. The contestant that has all the answers and controls the game is known as the Hustler. The Hustler must hide the fact that they are the Hustler from the other contestants in the game. The five contestants answer trivia questions to build up cash and the Hustler eliminates two of the contestants and then the final three contestants must decide the identity of the Hustler if the identity of the Hustler is guessed correctly then the contestants that figures out the identity of the Hustler they split the money between them if only one contestant figures out the identity of the Hustler then they go home with all the money. If neither of the contestants guess the identity of the Hustler then the Hustler goes home with all the money.

I enjoy watching game shows and I thought this one was interesting and different because it is a mystery mixed with trivia and I had fun trying to figure out who the Hustler was but, as game show fans know, the people watching mist want to play along and secondly they must want a particular contestant to win in order to keep watching the game. I had fun playing along with the game, but I wasn’t rooting for any particular contestant to win the game. I think this is a big problem for this show because I don’t want to keep watching the show. I think I will watch this show and hope that it gets better but I think this is the weakest of the games in the ABC lineup. and I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

NEW CRAIG FERGUSON-HOSTED GAME SHOW, ABC’S ‘THE HUSTLER,’
CHALLENGES VIEWERS TO HONE THEIR DETECTIVE SKILLS
ABC announced today the network has picked up the mind-bending, new game show series, “The Hustler.” Hosted by Emmy® Award-winning game show host, actor, writer, comedian and ABC alum Craig Ferguson, “The Hustler” breaks the game show mold by featuring one player who secretly already knows the answers. Don’t be fooled. Just because they have a leg up doesn’t mean they’ll be taking home the prize. “The Hustler” is set to begin production later this fall, with an airdate to be announced at a later date.
Each episode of “The Hustler” will follow five contestants as they collaborate to answer a series of trivia questions, with the goal of building a collective prize pot that increases with each correct answer. The catch? One of the five contestants, the Hustler, already knows the answers but must keep their identity a secret in order to have a shot at winning the grand prize. Throughout each episode, two contestants are anonymously eliminated by the Hustler, leaving three remaining contestants – the Hustler and two others, who must collectively decide who they think the Hustler is. If they are right, they share the prize pot. If the two contestants are wrong, the Hustler goes home with the full cash reward.
“It’s rare and exciting to have a mystery-based game show that employs viewers and contestants to tap into their sleuth skills,” said Rob Mills, senior vice president, Alternative Series, Specials and Late Night, ABC Entertainment. “This fun, new format is the perfect addition to our dynamic game show lineup, and Craig’s unmatched wit and humor make him the ideal host. We couldn’t be more excited to welcome him back to ABC.”
“Studio Lambert and format creator Richard Bacon are incredibly excited to partner with ABC on ‘The Hustler,’” said Studio Lambert CEO Stephen Lambert. “With Craig in the driver’s seat, the comedic beats of this game are very much to the fore. We think ABC viewers will laugh a lot but also be shocked and surprised by the twists of this game, which invites contestants and viewers to play detective, solving a whodunit or, in this case, a whoisit.”
“The Hustler,” which is produced by All3Media-backed production company Studio Lambert, is an original format created by British TV and radio host Richard Bacon, who serves as an executive producer along with Studio Lambert company founder Stephen Lambert, executive vice president of Studio Lambert USA Jack Burgess, creative director Tim Harcourt and Susan House.

Primetime TV Review: “Selena: The Series”

TV Review!

“Selena:The Series” Review by Eva 12/6/2020

I was interested in watching Selena: The Series because I am a bit of a fan of her music although I will admit I had never heard of her music until my niece brought the movie Selena to my house to watch almost every time I was babysitting her. I began to enjoy her music and knew every line of the movie since I have seen it so many times. The Netflix series shows her road to stardom. The series, in my opinion, does the same thing as the movie showing that Selena and her family struggled and sacrificed to make her a star and that her life was cut tragically short when she was killed by an obsessed fan. I think this series is more for fans of her music to remember her and her music but it doesn’t add anything new that people who saw the movie didn’t know already. If you didn’t see Selena the movie and want to find out more about the singer and her music this is the show for you.

Selena Quintanilla (Christian Serratos) does a good job of playing the Tejana singer who led a sheltered life and whose strict father Abraham Quintanilla (Ricardo Chavira) who was her manager propelled her and her brother AB (Gabriel Chavarria) and sister Suzette (Noemi Gonzalez) to stardom as the band Selena y los Dinos. The show is easy to binge watch, and has good music but I don’t think it will earn Selena any new fans. I almost wish I had not seen Selena the movie because if I had not seen it I would like the series better. I give this series 3 stars and suggest that you watch Selena the movie if you have not seen it yet but if you want to watch this series watch the movie after you have seen the series.

MORE INFORMATION:

The countdown to Netflix’s Selena: The Series has officially begun.

Fans of late Tejano superstar Selena Quintanilla were up bright and early Tuesday morning for a special announcement from Netflix about its upcoming biography.

The early-morning revelation was that the scripted series, which follows the incredible life and tragic death of the Texas-born performer, will premiere on Netflix December 4, 2020. Netflix also released a handful of new photos and a new teaser trailer.

In the new trailer, Selena, who is portrayed by actress Christian Serratos (TV’s The Walking Dead), walks onto a stage to perform her beloved song “Como la Flor” with a crowd cheering her on.

“Do you trust your father?” says Abraham Quintanilla Jr. (San Antonio’s own Ricardo Chavira).

“Yes,” Serratos’ Selena responds.

Selena rose to fame through the 1980s and mid-1990s with hit songs like “Baila Esta Cumbia,” “Como la Flor” and “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom.” Considered the “Queen of Tejano,” she started her crossover to an English-language album when she recorded the pop ballad “Dreaming of You” in early March 1995.

The song would be released posthumously five months later. On March 31, 1995, Selena was murdered at a motel in Corpus Christi by her friend and founder of her fan club. She was only 23 years old.

Along with Serratos and Chavira, the cast of the new series includes actors Gabriel Chavarria (TV’s The Purge) as her brother A.B., Noemi Gonzalez (TV’s East Los High) as her sister Suzette and newcomer Madison Taylor Baez, who plays Selena as a child.

“What I find most enduring about Selena is her ability to defy boundaries,” Serratos wrote on social media earlier this year. “She paved the way for Latinas and inspired so many to continue in the face of adversity. I will be forever grateful for the memories she has given me, and what she’s done for women like me and my daughter.”

DVD Review!

Hawaii Five-O (2010): The Complete Series DVD cover

“Hawaii Five-O (2010): The Complete Series” Review by Suzanne 12/1/20

This was a good show and a successful reboot (one of many on CBS). It was a very middle-of-the-road show, in my opinion.  Don’t get me wrong… They worked hard to make this show full of action and character development over the years. Unfortunately, when shows have so many action, they keep trying to outdo themselves each season. At some point, it gets ridiculous.  Also, I have a hard time believing in the show because I lived in Hawaii. There is very little crime there – especially violent crime. Oh, well. What do I know? The show aired for 10 years and has many fans. I know that the actors were very good to their fans, especially the ones who lived in Hawaii. Every Fall, they had a big fan get-together on Waikiki, “Sunset on the “Beach” with a big screen. They would watch the first episode and chat with the fans. They had a red carpet and would take selfies with fans. Over 10,000 people went to this event each year. I always wanted to go, but it would have required camping out there the day ahead of time to get a good seat, and I’m a little too old for that.

In the series, Alex O’Loughlin stars as former Navy Captain Steve McGarrett, and Scott Caan plays his partner, Danny Williams. They run a special state police task force, answerable to the governor. The original “Hawaii Five-0” was based on a real-life police task force that existed in the 1950’s.  It’s enjoyable drama with a fine cast.

I’m happy to have the DVD set, since I didn’t watch the show regularly. Besides the 240 episodes, the set also has over 20 hours of special features, which includes Detled and Extended scenes, gag reels, alternate endings, music videos, behind the scenes featurettes, launch promos and more, plus audio commentaries on select episodes and an all-new bonus disc featuring the cast and crew looking back on the show.

Primetime TV Review: “Saved by the Bell” (2020)

TV Review!

“Saved by the Bell” (2020) Review by Eva 11/28/2020

I was really excited about the new Saved by the Bell revival because I used to watch it on Saturday mornings when it was on NBC. The show was corny but, it was good escape television when you had a hard week at school. It was a just silly and a good thing to watch on a Saturday morning. This new version is rated TV 14 and takes on social issues which is good. The show starts when Zach Morris (Mark-Paul Gosselaar), who is now Governor of California, closes a lot of under-performing schools because he wants to cut taxes. A reporter at a press conference suggests that Zach bus the kids to better schools so the kids, whose schools were closed, can have the same quality education that he did when he was in high school. I thought this was going to be a classic fish out of water show where the kids from the inner city high school and the kids from the affluent high school learn to find common ground with each other and eventually learn important lessons from each other. I think that is what this show wants to be, but it isn’t there yet. I hope that future episodes will achieve this goal.

The kids from the inner city school are smart despite their disadvantages but I don’t like the stereotypes of the rich kids that they have had every advantage and all they care about is going on vacation rather than being in school. I would like to think that even if you go to a school that is in a better neighborhood, there are smart and not so smart kids there just like there are in an inner-city school. I know the show is trying to prove a point and it does, but I don’t think it is balanced in showing both sides of the story yet. Jesse Spano (Elizabeth Berkley) is back as the school guidance counselor with a son of her own Jaime Spano (Belmont Cameli) who is a jock who doesn’t play football well at all. AC Slater (Mario Lopez) is also back as the gym teacher and football coach whose life isn’t going so well at the moment.

I really wanted to like this show but it has a lot of work to do to get better so I can only give it a 3 out of 5 stars and I suggest that parents view it before they let their kids watch it just to make sure it is okay with mom and dad.

MORE INFORMATION:

When California governor Zack Morris gets into hot water for closing too many underfunded high schools, he proposes they send the affected students to the most well-funded schools in the state – including Bayside High. The influx of new students gives the privileged Bayside kids (who never have a problem that can’t be solved in twenty-two minutes) a much-needed dose of reality.

Primetime DVD Review: “Mission: Impossible: The Original TV Series” [Blu-ray]

DVD Review!

Mission: Impossible: The Original TV Series [Blu-ray]

“Mission: Impossible: The Original TV Series [Blu-ray]” Review by Suzanne 11/25/20

I watched this show growing up; I have three older brothers who are comic book and scifi fans, so they loved it. I’ve always enjoyed it, but it’s even better to watch as an adult. It was a little over my head when I was that young.  Although the first episode is a bit slow, the others aren’t. There is plenty of action and intrigue. If you like James Bond movies or John le Carré novels, you should love this series. There were many spy shows on TV back then, like “I Spy,” “Wild Wild West,” “Man from U.N.C.L.E.” and “The Avengers.” This was as good as any of those.

In each episode, the IMF team gathers to plan their next operation. Jim Phelps (Peter Graves) They usually have a target in some country. They use disguises, accents, electronics, deception, sleight-of-hand, impeccable timing and quick thinking to accomplish their mission. It’s a very cool show and often fun.

If you’re a younger person who’s never watched an old show, you might find it shocking because the early episodes are in black and white. People are smoking.  Latinos and Asians are mostly played by white people.  You don’t want to think too deeply about the fact that they infiltrated other countries to commit illegal acts and weren’t bothered by the fact that they were responsible for many deaths.  Back then, the bad guys were all bad, so it was okay.  Still, like “Star Trek,” they were progressive in many ways.  They had a multicultural cast (for the time).  Barney, their electronics expert, played by a black actor Greg Morris.  Morris was also the actor who was on the show the longest. It ran 7 seasons, which is a good run. Barbara Bain played Cinnamon.  She wasn’t just eye candy, though. She was shown to be very intelligent and had some sort of medical training.  Unlike many shows back then, she was an important part of the team.  Later on, Lesley Ann Warren and Linda Day George replaced Bain in the series. After “Star Trek” was canceled, Leonard Nimoy joined the cast for a few years.

It’s fun to watch these old series to see so many actors we recognize from movies or other shows (especially those that went on to more fame). Sam Elliot was a regular on the show in 1970.  Lee Meriweather was on for 8 episodes. I’m sure you’ll recognize a lot of familiar faces, such as Anthony Zerbe, William Windom, Fritz Weaver, Pernell Roberts, Mark Lenard, Robert Conrad, Joanna Cassidy, Dina Merrill, and many more.

There was a reboot of the series in the 1980’s that I liked, starring Thaao Penghlis (Tony/Andre on “Days of Our Lives”) and others. Peter Graves reprised his role of Phelps on that one.  I never saw the movies because I heard they were very different from the original series.  If you love those, you may be disappointed in the series.

This DVD set is great. The series is finally on Blu-ray!  It has a very cool case. Each season has its own mini-case and says, “Your mission should you decide to accept it” and “These discs will self-destruct in 5 seconds.” Those catch phrases are both from this show.  My only complaint is that there are no features. I’m disappointed because I would really liked to have seen those. I find it hard to believe that there aren’t some old interviews, behind-the-scenes features, or promos they could have found in their vaults to add. For that matter, they could have interviewed the surviving cast members Barbara Bain, Peter Lupus, Lynda Day George, Lesley Ann Warren, Sam Elliot, Sid Haig, Lee Meriweather and others, or any other surviving crew or cast. Still, it’s worth having, just to see all of the episodes, and in such good condition.

Primetime TV Review: “B Positive”

TV Review!

“B Positive” Review by Eva 11/7/2020

I saw the commercials for this show and I got curious because it is about something that should be put in a drama rather than a comedy. Drew (Thomas Middleditch), a recently divorced dad, finds out from his doctor that he needs a kidney transplant because he is in kidney failure and will die if he doesn’t get one soon. The problem is that he doesn’t have any close family or friends that he can ask to donate a kidney. Drew goes to the wedding of a friend and runs into a high school friend he hasn’t seen in a long time named Gina (Annaleigh Ashford). Gina drinks a lot and does drugs.  While she is drunk at the wedding, Drew tells her he needs a kidney, so she promises to be his kidney donor. The next day, Drew goes to Gina’s place.  Since she was drunk and doing drugs the night before, she doesn’t remember her promise to Drew. Drew decides there must be someone else that he can ask for a kidney donation, but everyone he asks turns him down. Drew calls the donor registry and discovers that there are no matches. Gina has some tests run and tells Drew that the tests say she is a match for him.  Her doctor tells her that she’ll have to give up drugs and alcohol for six months in order to donate a kidney. Gina tells Drew she can give up her bad habits to give him a kidney because she feels this is the reason she survived a bad car accident a few years ago,

The chemistry between the two actors that play Drew and Gina is wonderful and they are complete opposites. She is flaky and a little irresponsible, but with a good heart.  He is serious, responsible, and not at all spontaneous. The audience, however, knows that, eventually, they will probably get together romantically. The rest of the cast that play their friends and family still have to click together, but I am sure that when that happens, this show will be another hit for CBS, who has several quirky comedies in its line-up. I didn’t think I would laugh at a comedy with such a serious subject, but the writers make it funny. I give this show a 5 out of 5 stars.

MORE INFORMATION:

B POSITIVE is a comedy executive produced by Chuck Lorre and Marco Pennette, starring Thomas Middleditch and Annaleigh Ashford. The series revolves around Drew (Middleditch), a therapist and newly divorced dad who is faced with finding a kidney donor when he runs into Gina (Ashford), a rough-around-the-edges woman from his past who volunteers her own. Together, they form an unlikely and life-affirming friendship, as they begin a journey that will forever impact both of their lives. Kether Donohue stars as Gabby, Gina’s best friend; Sara Rue stars as Julia, Drew’s ex-wife; Izzy G. stars as Maddie, Drew and Julia’s teenage daughter and Terrence Terrell stars as Eli, a new friend of Drew’s who is also going through dialysis.

Primetime DVD Review: “Ben 10 vs. The Universe: The Movie”

DVD Review!

Ben 10 vs. The Universe: The Movie DVD cover

“Ben 10 vs. The Universe: The Movie” Review by Suzanne 10/20/20

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the DVD I reviewed in this post. The opinions I share are my own.

“Ben 10” is a long-running animated TV series. There have been 5 different TV series and 5 movies. This is the latest film. Ben is a kid who acquires a wristwatch known as the Omnitrix. It uses alien dna to transform him into different creatures with armor, powers etc. He uses it to fight villains and defend his family.  It’s not just an action show, though. Ben learns many things, with the help of his uncle, grandfather and cousin – it’s educational and family-oriented; it’s won many awards.

In the movie, Ben goes to space to thwart a meteor and ends up being taken by aliens. He has a few adventures. Meanwhile, an evil alien is trying to take over the earth.  Ben is bored and impatient at the beginning of the movie, but he gets more adventure than he bargained for and learns a few things along the way.

While it’s definitely a kid’s show, it has a lot of humor in it. Adults might enjoy that – especially those who like cartoons. Of course, there are also many “Ben 10” action figures and other toys that tie in with the show and movie.

This would make a great gift for any child. Also, you don’t have to have seen any of the previous shows or movies to know what’s going on. It’s pretty easy to pick up and start watching.  The DVD doesn’t have a lot of features. It shows some of the scenes before they were colored and finished, and it it has some static artwork.

Primetime TV Review: “Supermarket Sweep”

TV Review!

“Supermarket Sweep” Review by Eva 10/20/2020

If you have been reading my tv show reviews for a while, then you know I enjoy game shows. One of my favorite game shows in the past was Supermarket Sweep because I always wanted to be able to put any groceries I wanted in my cart without having to worry about the price. Leslie Jones (of SNL fame) is the executive producer and host of the new show.

The show is very simple to play. There are three teams of two who play three rounds of trivia, where they test their knowledge of food and grocery brands. The contestants add seconds to their sweep time for every question they answer correctly. Once the trivia rounds are over, the team that has the most minutes goes first to go around the market, with the goal of putting the most expensive items in their cart in order to win the game. The best part of the show is when all three teams are running around the market, putting groceries in their cart and picking up inflatables and other items to earn bonus points. The team who has the most money in groceries and bonuses wins the game and has a chance to run another sweep where they could win one hundred thousand dollars.

I really enjoyed Leslie Jones as the host because she said in one episode that she was a fan of the former version of the show that was on Lifetime. Because she is a fan of the show, she is truly rooting for the contestants to win. Jones gets excited when the contestants win, and she roots for them when they are running the sweeps. If you enjoy game shows like I do, you will enjoy this one. It really is fun to watch. I really think this will be a great addition to the ABC fun and games block of game shows.

ABC’s Game Show Lineup Gets Supersized – Leslie Jones to Host Revival of Classic TV Game Show ‘Supermarket Sweep’
ABC’S GAME SHOW LINEUP GETS SUPERSIZED

LESLIE JONES TO HOST REVIVAL OF CLASSIC TV GAME SHOW
‘SUPERMARKET SWEEP’

ABC is bringing back the classic TV game show “Supermarket Sweep,” hosted and executive produced by Emmy® Award-nominated comedienne and actress Leslie Jones. Produced by Fremantle, the fast-paced and energetic series follows three teams of two as they battle it out using their grocery shopping skills and knowledge of merchandise to win big cash prizes. The original format aired on ABC from 1965-1967 and went on to become a global sensation. It was adapted in 13 international territories and, most recently, relaunched in the UK. Production on the 10-episode order is set to begin this spring. An airdate will be announced at a later date.

“I’ve always dreamed of being on ‘Supermarket Sweep,’” said Leslie Jones. “Seriously, I tried out for the show years ago; and after getting turned away, I knew I’d have to take matters into my own hands. Being able to bring the iconic game show back to life on ABC is my ultimate redemption story!”

Primetime TV Review: “The Weakest Link”

TV Review!

“The Weakest Link” Review by Eva 10/2/2020

I was so excited when I heard The Weakest Link was coming back on television it was one of my favorite game shows when it first aired in 2001. The show is the American version of a British game show of the same name. In the 2001 version, British host Ann Robinson basically told contestants they were dumb and terrible losers using one-liner jokes while she looked deadly serious.

The latest version of the show is hosted by Jane Lynch who is a good game show host but she doesn’t do too well with the jokes that make fun of the contestants. In my opinion this is because the British are much better at this serious type of deadpan humor. The group of eight contestants answer six rounds of trivia questions and after each round of play, the contestants vote on who they think the weakest player is and that player known as the weakest link is eliminated. Once the six rounds of trivia questions have been played, two players go against each other and the player who answered the most questions in one minute wins all the money the team of eight contestants has put in the bank in the earlier rounds of play.

I give this show 5 out of 5 stars because I enjoy game shows that involve trivia and I think that if you enjoy trivia centered game shows where contestants win a lot of money you will enjoy this show.

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. – July 8, 2020 – NBC is bringing back hit British import and international game show phenomenon “Weakest Link”. Co-produced by BBC Studios’ Los Angeles production arm and Universal Television Alternative Studio. The network has greenlit 13 episodes of the rapid-fire quiz show with Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning host and actress Jane Lynch (“Hollywood Game Night,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) set to host and executive produce. “Weakest Link” will begin production later this year.

The new version of “Weakest Link” will deliver the fast-paced and quick-witted pillars of the original British format created by the BBC with a few modern twists. The hybrid game show sees contestants answer general knowledge questions to bank prize money across multiple rounds. At the end of each round, the contestants vote out who they perceive to be the “Weakest Link” remaining.

“I’ve been a longtime fan of this game-changing quiz show since it first debuted,” said Lynch. “Each time the phrase ‘You are the Weakest Link. Goodbye.’ passes my lips, it will be with great reverence and delight.”

“‘Weakest Link’ became an instant fan-favorite when it first aired on our network, and we are excited to bring a fresh, new take to the timeless format,” said Meredith Ahr. The President of Reality and Alternative Group of NBC Entertainment. “Jane Lynch has been a beloved staple in our NBC family for years, and her sharp wit and engaging personality will be the perfect match for this highly entertaining game show.”

For 20 years, “Weakest Link” has been the fastest and fiercest quiz show on television. The massively successful format distributed by BBC Studios has been produced in 44 territories around the globe. With over 1,500 episodes having aired in the UK alone.

The original run of “Weakest Link” on NBC launched on April 16, 2001 with 15.1 million viewers. Giving NBC its biggest audience in the timeslot with regular programming in nearly five years, since May 1996. For that season, “The Weakest Link” averaged nearly 13 million viewers to rank among television’s top 35 primetime broadcast series.

“Weakest Link” is produced by BBC Studios in association with Universal Television Alternative Studio. Ryan O’Dowd will serve as executive producer for BBC Studios. Stuart Krasnow, who executive produced the original NBC run. Will return in the same role and also serve as showrunner. Jane Lynch will also executive produce.

Primetime TV Review: “Filthy Rich”

TV Review!

“Filthy Rich” Review by Eva 9/25/2020

Filthy Rich is a campy, silly, nighttime soap opera set in New Orleans that is centered around the Monreaux family. Eugene and Margaret Monreaux (Gerald McRaney and Kim Cattrall) are the head of a family that own a Christian television network. Eugene is presumed dead in a plane crash, and his wife Margaret discovers he has fathered three children who are now grown and are heirs to their father’s money. Filthy Rich, like many other shows have done in the past, ridicules Christians, in my opinion. They neglect to mention that Christians are people who are not perfect, but since they believe in God, they try their best to follow what the Bible teaches them. This show does show the sins of the Monreaux family, but I wish they would show them trying their best to follow what the Bible teaches them.

This show, in my opinion, perpetuates the myth that Christians are supposed to be perfect people, something that people who don’t believe in God think but is not true at all. Filthy Rich does do a good job of portraying some televangelists, but what makes me sad is that they make fun of the concept of prayer by using it as the way that the audience finds out what happened in the previous episode. I also did not like that they used scripture to insult each other when they don’t put them in context at all. If I were writing the show, I would respect the practice of prayer and reading the Bible so the audience could see that all people have faults because all humans do, but Christians try their best to live their lives like the Bible teaches them to do.

I do, however, have to give this show a 3 out of 5 stars for those who like to watch escapist television that only shows one side of its subject and not the other side of the coin.

Primetime DVD Review: “The Good Doctor – Season Three”

DVD Review!

The Good Doctor - Season Three DVD cover

“The Good Doctor – Season Three DVD cover” Review by Suzanne 8/10/20

I enjoyed watching all the episodes of this DVD. I don’t watch the show regularly, so I haven’t seen the first two years.  It was easy to watch, even though I missed all of those episodes.  It’s basically like any hospital show you’ve seen before, such as Grey’s  Anatomy, ER, Chicago Hope, Chicago Med, et al.  From what I’ve read, they’re very accurate with the medical scenes.  It’s mostly a soap opera with medical stories…a little bit like “General Hospital” used to be, before they brought in spies and mobsters.  If you buy the foremost conceit of the show, which is that a high-functioning autistic person (Freddie Highmore, who plays Shaun) could become a surgeon, and you don’t think the main character is irritating, then you’ll probably enjoy the show.

The show was developed by David Shore (“House” – another medical show), based upon a Korean series.  The stories are very good, and the acting is fabulous. Sure, some of the things that happen might be a little cliché.  For instance, every single medical show I’ve ever watched has a scene where some person is trapped under or beneath something, and they seem fine, but then the doctor discovers that if that thing holding them down is lifted, they’ll bleed out and die.  That happened in the two-part finale of this season.  The ending of the season, and that two-parter, was also pretty predictable.  Another story, about a main character dying, did surprise me, though.

In general, it’s very entertaining. Just don’t expect the stories to astound or shock you too much.  It’s worth watching, especially if you like hospital dramas, and it has some great actors, and some very attractive people. It’s not the best show on TV, though. It’s a good ensemble show.  Even though Highmore is the star, he has a large cast of talented actors to support him, including Hill Harper, Richard Schiff, Nicholas Gonzalez, Antonia Thomas, Christina Chang, Paige Spara, Fiona Gubelmann, Jasika Nicole and Will Yun Lee. They have some great guest-stars, too.

The DVD only has two features: a gag reel, and some deleted scenes. That’s pretty disappointing. Perhaps we can blame the scarce features on the Coronavirus.  The series wasn’t cut short for that, though. It has 20 episodes – 2 more than it had the first two seasons. It always ends in March. I was very grateful that they had great closed-captioning and that they had the “Play All Episodes” choice. Some DVD’s don’t do that, which I find annoying.  I hope that next time, they can come up with some better extras for the DVD set.

Primetime TV Review: “Muppets Now”

TV Review!

Muppets Now poster
Review by Eva

I was excited to learn that the Muppets were going to have a show on Disney+. The thirty-minute episodes will be posted every Friday. The first episode begins with Scooter editing the week’s episode and getting suggestions from everyone on what to do. Miss Piggy has a lifestyle segment. Miss Piggy is upset with Scooter about the opening of her segment because it says Lifesty instead of Lifestyle. So, Scooter adds the le with a hyphen (Lifesty-le). My favorite part of the show is the cooking segment featuring the Swedish Chef. The Swedish Chef competes with a celebrity chef in creating a real recipe. Of course, the Swedish Chef gets frustrated and that makes for a very funny segment. The first episode’s guest stars areactor Taye Diggs, RuPaul, and chef Carlina Will.

This show is great for kids, but if you have a child with a short attention span, you might want to split the thirty-minute show and watch it one or two segments at a time. I love the Muppets, but I have to admit that some parts of the show are better than others, depending on which guests are on each segment and how well they interact with the Muppet characters. Also, some of the sketches are longer than others and at times are not funny. I hope the show continues and gets better with time. I give this show a 4 out of 5 stars because it has room for improvement.

More Information:

Muppets Now is The Muppets Studio’s first unscripted series and first original series for Disney+. In the six-episode season, Scooter rushes to make his delivery deadlines and upload the brand-new Muppet series for streaming. They are due now, and he’ll need to navigate whatever obstacles, distractions, and complications the rest of the Muppet gang throws at him. Overflowing with spontaneous lunacy, surprising guest stars and more frogs, pigs, bears (and whatevers) than legally allowed, the Muppets cut loose in “Muppets Now” with the kind of startling silliness and chaotic fun that made them famous. From zany experiments with Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker to lifestyle tips from the fabulous Miss Piggy, each episode is packed with hilarious segments, hosted by the Muppets showcasing what the Muppets do best. Produced by The Muppets Studio and Soapbox Films, “Muppets Now” premieres Friday, July 31, streaming only on Disney+.

Primetime TV Review: “Upload”

Upload on Amazon Prime

“Upload” on Amazon Prime Review by Suzanne 7/25/20

I watched this show because I just love Robbie Amell. It hooked me right away, and I watched the whole first season. I don’t usually binge-watch because I don’t have much free time, and I watch a lot of shows for my site. This one is worth it.

I will caution you that it has a somewhat-sad ending, but I’m sure we will see it resolved in the second season.

The show is set in the future, where there is an afterlife of sorts, set up by a major internet corporation. You can choose to have your mind put into the computer, and then you live in a type of heaven. Those who have a lot of money live in the best type of heaven. Those without much money live in a more limited version. Hard to believe, but society is even more deeply divided by rich and poor than it is now.

The hero of this show is a self-centered, handsome, young programmer named Nathan (Amell), who comes from a working class family. He and his partner, Jamie (Jordan Johnson-Hinds) have developed ground-breaking software. Nathan has a rich, beautiful, very shallow girlfriend named Ingrid (Allegra Edwards). When Nathan’s automatic car has an accident and he’s rushed to the ER, his girlfriend uploads him into her rich people’s heaven. He ends up falling in love with Nora (Andy Allo), a woman that works for the corporation that runs it (a customer service person, basically).  While Nathan and Nora fall for each other, they uncover a murder plot and more.

The show is one part comedy, one part romance, one part mystery, and one part wry social commentary. The plot unfolds in a very interesting way, and things happen that you won’t expect. The best shows have many layers that unfold gradually to shock you without seeming too complicated. This is one of those. It’s delightful.

You should check it out. This is my favorite show this year. I can’t wait for the second season.

Primetime TV Review: “DC’s Stargirl”

TV Review!

Stargirl on The CW

“Stargirl” on The CW Review by Suzanne 7/25/20

I love this show because I’m a huge superhero fan. I grew up reading comic books of all sorts (I have three older brothers who are not only big nerds, er, fans, but they helped start San Diego Comic-Con). This show is more aimed at teens, but it fits in nicely with all the other CW superhero series. Unlike those, this one focuses on rebuilding the Justice Society of America. We really haven’t seen any other series where they take a while to build up a team. “Legends of Tomorrow” was put together by Rip in one episode. It has a lot of humor, good acting, great acting and fun special effects as well as many terrifying villains.

We saw the JSA in an episode of “Legends of Tomorrow,” but they were set in the past. Also, this was before “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” so things have been changed (obviously). In this series, the JSA was slaughtered by the Injustice Society (ISA) roughly a decade or so earlier.

Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger) is a teenager whose mom gets remarried to a nice guy, Pat (Luke Wilson), who moves the family to his hometown of Blue Valley. Pat has a garage where he fixes up cars, but he also has all of the JSA costumes and weapons there, and he builds himself a giant robot out of car parts. Courtney learns that Pat used to be the sidekick for the JSA superhero, Starman. She has a special connection to Starman’s magic staff, and she sees that Starman looked just like her father, who went missing a decade ago.

Despite Pat’s objections, Courtney becomes Stargirl and sets about building a new JSA, once they figure out that the ISA is still around and plotting evil deeds. Conveniently, each of the heroes in the JSA got their powers from various items, so Courtney just has to find other young people that can use the items effectively. Pat tries to help them work as a team.

The acting is great, and you may enjoy the show because it has a lot of action and fun. The villains are very interesting, too. Teens especially should love it.

The new DC UNIVERSE drama series DC’S STARGIRL follows high school sophomore Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger) as she inspires an unlikely group of young heroes to stop the villains of the past. This new drama reimagines Stargirl and the very first superhero team, the Justice Society of America, in an unpredictable series.

The series focuses on the character that started creator Geoff Johns’ career as a comic book writer when he created her in 1999, lovingly inspired by his late sister who was killed in a 1996 plane crash.

Geoff Johns (“Arrow,” “Batwoman,” “The Flash,” “Titans”) is the showrunner and executive produces DC’S STARGIRL with Melissa Carter (“Queen Sugar”), who serves as co-showrunner, as well as Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Greg Beeman. Based on the characters from DC created by Geoff Johns, DC’S STARGIRL is produced by Berlanti Productions and Mad Ghost Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.  DC’S STARGIRL stars Brec Bassinger, Luke Wilson, Amy Smart, Yvette Monreal, Anjelika Washington, Cameron Gellman, Trae Romano, Jake Austin Walker, Hunter Sansone, Meg DeLacy, Neil Jackson and Christopher James Baker.

“The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants in Space” on Netflix Review by Suzanne 7/25/20

This is a cute and funny animated series based on a series of children’s books. The heroes of the show are George and Harold, two fourth-graders who draw comic books (and make lots of jokes). They make their school principal into a superhero from their comic, “Captain Underpants.” He’s a dolt, though.

I haven’t read the books or seen the 2017 movie (also made by DreamWorks Animation), so I can’t speak for how authentic the show is to the original books. It appears to be, though, from what I’ve read. It’s got a lot of silly jokes that will make you laugh.

Interestingly enough, the book series has been seen as controversial by some parental groups because of toilet humor and because Harold is gay. For an animated TV show, it’s mild, thanks to much more offensive shows like “Family Guy,” “South Park” and many series on Cartoon Network.

Your kids will love this, and you may, too, unless you have a very sophisticated sense of humor.

“The Twelve” on Netflix Review by Suzanne 7/25/20

This is a riveting Belgian drama about a jury that’s trying a woman accused of murdering her baby as well as an old friend. We see a lot of the drama from the jury’s point of view, and how the case affects their lives, which is what makes it interesting.

Apparently, in Belgian criminal courts, while they do have a jury, they also have a set of 3 judges that question the defendant, and the defendant’s lawyer can’t object. The defendant has to answer all questions, including ones that are very personal or irrelevant. They don’t admonish the jury from listening to the news about the case, nor do they tell them to refrain from discussing the case before the deliberation. It’s very different from U.S. courts.

Frie Palmer (Maaike Cafmeyer) is accused of murdering her baby with a shard of glass after a terribly custody and divorce case. She’s also accused of murdering her best friend in the past. One of the jurors, Delphine Spijkers (Maaike Neuville), is based on a real juror who tried to get out of a court case because of spousal abuse. The details of the case reminded her of her own life.

Many face Dutch actors that you’ve never heard of star in this great crime series. It’s enthralling and worth sticking with.
