THIS STILL NEEDS EXTENSIVE EDITING!

[elevator dings]

Hi, sweetheart.

Oh! Hi, Mom.

[laughs]

Are you dropping off some more lemon bars?

Oh, actually, I’m here to volunteer. I know you’re short-staffed, and I thought I’d lend a hand.

Wow, you’ve had quite the busy day, haven’t you? Didn’t you volunteer at Statesville this morning?

Yeah, I did. And I hope this is a more pleasant experience.

Why? What happened?

I had an unfortunate encounter with the notorious Vivian Alamain.

Yikes.

Yeah. I tried to steer clear of her, but she managed to track me down.

Well, that’s creepy. What did she want?

To talk about Philip and the letter that Victor wrote to him. [soft dramatic music]

OK, then let me ask again. Are you or are you not going to tell your boyfriend… that I forged my father’s letter?

You know I don’t like any of this, but I’m also shrewd enough to know that the truth coming out would only cause a lot of suffering for everyone.

[sighs] Music to my ears. Your shrewdness, that is. So just to be on the same page, we’re never going to tell Alex about any of this, right? [relaxed music]

No, it’ll be our little secret.

Honestly, I do think it’s best this way.

Well, it’d be best if there wasn’t a secret to keep in the first place.

But as it stands now, I guess you’re right. Alex would feel totally betrayed by us if he knew the truth. [tense music]

All right, well, when Philip comes back, please tell him I stopped by.

Alex, wait. Um, there’s something that I need to tell you.

Sure. What’s on your mind?

Oh, someone slept in late.

It’s spring break. I’m allowed.

I know, I’m just giving you a hard time. Hey, uh, you should know that your Grandma Marlena and Uncle Steve had a little chat with Grandpa Shane.

OK. Did, uh-

did he have any updates about Grandpa John?

[line trilling]

Finally. Dad! God, I have to admit, I was starting to feel a little ghosted.

Yeah, I know. I’m sorry, Jeannie. I’ve-

I’ve been a bit distracted.

Oh? With what?

Well, truth to tell, I’ve just received some rather devastating news.

Uh, what’s going on? Oh, my God, is it about John? [ominous music]

[soft orchestration] announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “Days of Our Lives.”

Your Grandpa Shane, he– he didn’t have a lot of information to give, but he did give us the last location that Grandpa John was seen in.

OK, great. Where was he?

Estonia. Grandma Marlena and Uncle Steve are planning to fly there today.

But isn’t that, like, a whole country?

It’s-

what grades did you get in geography?

No, Dad, I know it’s a whole country. I’m just saying, he wasn’t more specific? Like, what are they going to do, wander around Estonia calling his name? Like–

I think you need to have a little more faith in their detective skills. Hey, Uncle Steve’s a PI.

I know. It just doesn’t seem like much to go on.

It’s a start. It’s something. Listen, we’re going to find him. I have to believe that.

OK. And Grandpa Shane didn’t know anything else?

Nothing he was willing to share, Tate. Your grandmother thought that he could have told them more and that he was definitely holding something back.

Brady told me that his father is missing. Is-

is John–

Uh, we, uh-

we don’t have any new information.

Well, so then what’s the upsetting news? I mean, did you run into a dead end or something?

It’s-

it’s not about John. It’s about your mother. [tense music]

You seem nervous.

I am. I’m, um, not exactly sure I want to be having this conversation, but I, uh– I talked to Philip earlier, and he suggested that I clear the air with you, so…

OK, I thought we already did that.

Yeah. Well, I wasn’t totally honest with you the last time we talked, so…

Oh. Oh. Uh, so you do still have feelings for me?

No! No, seriously? Get over yourself.

No, I’m sorry. No, I just-

you know, last time you said you were over me, and now you’re saying something–

OK, just shut up and listen please. I just want to get this over with. I, um– I have some pretty major, life-changing news that I want to share with you, and I just– I want you to hear it from me. [soft dramatic music]

Look, I know you feel bad about keeping this secret from Alex. I’ve put you in a tricky spot, and I’m sorry about that.

Well, what’s done is done. I’ve made my peace with it. [relaxed music] Bottom line, nobody else needs to know that you and I are– oh, my God.

What?

Xander.

[tense music]

Uh, what did Vivian say about Victor’s letter?

Well, she just went on and on about how pleased she was that he gave Philip a chance to stake out his claim in the company.

Well, I guess that makes sense. You know, I think Vivian’s always thought of Philip as her son since she carried him to term.

Yeah. Which would be so sweet, except she stole the embryo from Kate.

Uh, why-

why did she feel the need to track you down to have this conversation? Did she say anything else about Victor’s letter?

Yeah. It was so strange. She said, um-

and these are her exact words– that she was so grateful that she was able to forge a new relationship with Philip. I had no idea what she was talking about.

What the hell, Xander? Why are you observing us from behind the tree?

I wasn’t doing that. I was just passing through. I saw you guys deep in conversation. I didn’t want to interrupt.

Right. Well, uh, Philip and I were just talking about how hard you guys have been working over at Titan.

Right. Yeah, well, you know what they say, the grind never stops, although it looks like Philip has found the right work-life balance. Plenty of time to socialize in the square.

Steph and I were just catching up. We haven’t seen each other in a while.

I’d expect not. Well, given all the time that she’s been spending with our cousin.

Right. And I’m happy for her and Alex. That’s actually what I was just telling her.

He was.

Mm, glad to hear it. You know, Alex is over the moon that you guys are back together. It’s great that you’re giving it another go.

Oh, I feel the same way.

Yeah, I just hope nothing happens to screw it up this time. [relaxed music]

OK. Uh… what’s your big news?

First of all, I just want to say, when we broke up, I really did want to move on and start over because I knew that’s what you wanted, and even though I was still pretty angry, I felt like I should respect that. But things haven’t exactly gone as I had planned, you know, with LA falling through and then, uh–

Us being hired together at Titan.

Right, right. And obviously neither of us were really thrilled about that. I know Stephanie definitely wasn’t.

Don’t worry about Stephanie. We talked about that. She’s very understanding.

Yeah. Yeah, for now. But down the line? I mean, she might feel differently. Especially because–

Because? [soft dramatic music]

Because Titan is a very close-knit company, and I really thought because I was going to start working for a huge conglomerate we wouldn’t necessarily run into each other every day, but the office is actually pretty small. Anyways, um, you’re going to find this out sooner or later, so I might as well just tell you now. Um…

I’ve decided to quit my job.

What are you reading?

Some article about Estonia. I don’t even know what I’m looking for. I just– [sighs] I can’t stop thinking about why Grandpa would have been sent there and what could have happened to him.

I understand. I was doing the same thing earlier. Why don’t you put that away? Because worrying about all these what-ifs, it’s just not going to help Grandpa John.

[sighs softly]

I’m gonna change the subject, OK? You did come in late last night. So what, were you hanging out with Holly?

Uh, no. Actually, we sort of had a fight.

Ugh, sorry to hear that. I assume she was probably a little angry hearing that your adoption plans were falling through.

Yeah, she was. But I-

I do have some good news about that actually. Uh, last night, I was helping Sophia finish up her shift at the Bistro– that’s why I was late– and while I was there…

Hold on.

She got a–

You were-

you were what?

I was helping Sophia finish up her shift at the Bistro.

Huh. OK. Continue.

It was no big deal. I was just trying to be nice.

All right, well, while I was there, Sophia got a call from her mother, who said she had met up with Chanel’s mother earlier that day to talk about the adoption.

Oh, OK. I thought it wasn’t happening anymore– with Johnny and Chanel, because of EJ’s scandals and such.

Yes, you’re right. It wasn’t. But I don’t know, Mayor Price must have gotten through to her because Mrs. Choi is apparently open to the possibility again.

Wow.

Yeah.

That’s– that’s quite the 180. You are relieved?

Yeah. Yeah, I am, of course. Really relieved. But I doubt Mom will feel the same way. [tense music]

What’s going on with Mom?

I’m-

I’m afraid her cancer’s come back.

[sighs] [somber music]

My God. When did you find out?

Uh, about an hour ago. I wanted to call you, but your Uncle Steve and Marlena came bursting into my office wanting to grill me about John. They seemed to be under the assumption that our strict protocol rules for security don’t apply to them.

Oh, come on. Really? I mean, Brady told me that he was– they were going to go and see you, but they’re going to pester you at a time like this?

Well, to be fair, they hadn’t heard about your mother yet.

Oh. Well, did they back off once you told them?

Actually, I haven’t told them yet. I, uh-

I wanted to, but I felt it was better to tell you kids first. I-

I haven’t managed to reach Eve or Andrew yet. Listen, sweetheart. Your mother’s beaten this twice before. She-

she’s going to beat it again.

I really hope so.

Daddy, can you please tell me the truth? How bad is it?

Well, the leukemia is progressing again, but the good news is that your mother is going to be starting treatment right away. Now, we all know this is going to be a very rough road ahead, but the, uh– the medical advancement in blood cancer therapies, immunotherapies, and CAR T therapies, it– she can survive this. She will survive this.

[sighs] [somber music]

Sweetheart? Sweetheart, tell me. Talk to me. What’s going through your mind right now?

[sighs]

I don’t know, I just hate that she has to go through this all over again.

Well, she won’t have to be going through it alone. As soon as I can, I’m going to get out of here and go back to Los Angeles so I can be with her.

Good. I want to be there for her, too, in any way that I can. Is there anything that I can do for her now though?

Actually, there is.

Does your mom want you to keep the baby?

Yes, she does. She argued that Aunt Eve was given up for adoption, and she’s kind of screwed up because of it.

That’s very interesting, that your mother would think that Eve’s issues are a result of her being adopted.

Yes! Right, exactly. It made no sense to me either. I kept trying to tell her that this situation is completely different, that our baby would be raised by two loving parents who can provide a stable and a happy home, which is just something that Sophia at I can’t do at this stage in our lives. I just-

I truly think that our child would be better off with Johnny and Chanel as its parents.

I-

I truly hope so too.

Hope? What are-

I– I thought you were on board with the adoption.

With an adoption, 100%. But this-

this adoption?

OK, what? You don’t think Johnny and Chanel would be good parents?

No, no, no, no, no, no. It’s not that. It’s not that. It’s-

it’s EJ’s involvement and influence. I don’t like the idea of my grandkid being raised under the same roof as EJ, and I-

he’d probably call him Grandpa EJ, OK? I’m not thrilled about that, son.

All right. So what does this mean, that you’re not going to support our decision here?

No, hear me out. It’s a drawback. But I also know that families are not perfect, and I understand that the clock is ticking. There’s a time element here. So if Johnny and Chanel want to care for– for this baby and love it, and you and Sophia and Mrs. Choi feel that this is the best decision, yes, son, I will– I will support this adoption. [soft dramatic music]

Thank you. Thank you, Dad. I-

I-

it means a lot.

Son, it’s OK. It’s all right. I hope things work out. I just also hope that Johnny and Chanel would move out of that house. Not just to get away from EJ, but-

but Kristen and– oh, that kooky mom of hers, you know? The fact that Rachel still lives there bugs me.

I know. I do think it is their plan to move out eventually

Good, I hope so. You want me to talk to your mom? I could get her to back off a little bit.

No. In the end, she came around, very reluctantly. Dad, I just– I want her to know– really, actually, I want both of you to know that it’s not because I don’t care about this baby that I’m doing this. I just-

I truly believe that the child will have a better life this way.

I understand. I really do.

You know, as far as I know, Philip hasn’t been in touch with Vivian ever since that very uncomfortable appearance at Victor’s funeral. Philip is– he was furious with her, like the rest of us, when she tried to claim Victor’s entire estate. So I don’t know when they had time to develop this so-called new relationship.

Hmm.

Hmm.

That’s strange.

You know what though? Now that I think about it, Vivian did come back into town last year before she was arrested, the same time that Philip arrived too. I don’t know. I wonder if maybe she didn’t see him then.

You know, I think it’s probably likely that this relationship is mostly in her head. I’m certain that Philip wouldn’t want anything to do with her.

Yeah, you’re right. But that woman is always up to something. Thank goodness Philip is just too smart to get sucked into her web.

Mm. [dramatic music]

What do you mean, something might screw up my relationship with– with Alex? What-

what do you mean?

Oh, I– I didn’t mean anything by it. It’s just my stupid way of saying that I’m rooting for you two lovebirds.

Thanks, I guess.

Hey, Xander. I was about to head back to the pub to pick up my breakfast order. Want to join me? Then we can go back to the office together.

Actually, I have a quick errand to run myself, so I’ll catch you later, yeah? Great seeing you, Stephanie. [relaxed music]

Do you think he heard us?

[sighs]

What? Joy, you can’t quit.

Like I said, I– I don’t want to be a problem for you and Stephanie.

You are not going to be a problem, I promise you.

You don’t know that. [soft dramatic music]

Damn, I– it just feels unfair. I feel like I’m forcing you to leave.

You’re not. This is my decision. And I really do think that this is what’s best. Not just for you and Stephanie, but for me too. I can’t pretend the situation is going to get any less awkward.

[sighs] Maybe I’m the one that should quit. Technically, you were hired first.

Alex, Titan is your family’s company. I’m an assistant. It makes way more sense for me to leave.

What are you going to do? What are you going to do for work? Do you have a plan?

Well, looks like I’m moving back to New York.

You’re leaving Salem?

I pretty much only came here for “Body and Soul.” Now that it’s relocated to LA, there’s not much for me here. I mean, at least in New York I have my parents and my sister.

Joy, how many times have you told me that you hated going back, that your mother’s very hard on you?

Yeah, she is. I’ll deal with it.

Are you sure? Because I’ll find you something here in Salem.

No, it’s OK. It’s OK. New York is where I need to be at this point in my life. [soft dramatic music]

Well, for what it’s worth, I’ll miss you.

Thanks. That’s very nice of you to say. But trust me, this move, it’s what’s best for everyone.

I know that you’re doing good work over at Statesville, but just, you know, make sure you’re careful.

Mm, well, don’t worry, the guards are always watching. I’m perfectly safe.

OK. [laughter]

Hey, Maggie, Sarah. What are you two lovely ladies talking about?

I was just telling Sarah about this curious run-in I had with Vivian Alamain today.

Vivian? Isn’t she in prison?

Yeah, sorry. I was doing volunteer work at Statesville. Anyway, she had this odd comment about, uh–

Uh, sorry, Mom. I don’t mean to interrupt, but doesn’t your shift start on the hour?

Oh, yeah. What time is it?

Oh, it’s just a few minutes past. It was my fault. I was– I was distracting you.

Oh, OK, honey. No, I should get over there. And I’ll see you both at home.

OK. Well, this is a nice surprise.

Yeah.

What are you doing here?

I had something I wanted to talk to you about. I just had a curious run-in of my own, with Philip and Stephanie. [tense music]

Nah. I was worried for a minute, too, but I don’t think he heard anything.

But he was acting so weird.

My brother’s always acting weird.

That comment he made about something screwing up my relationship with Alex, what– what was that about?

He said he didn’t mean anything by it.

Yeah, but– [sighs] I don’t know. Maybe it’s my guilty conscience, but I-

I feel like he knew that we were hiding something.

I doubt it. If Xander heard about the forgery, he would have confronted me right away. He isn’t exactly known for his restraint.

I guess you’re right. God, this whole thing has me so on edge.

Hey, I don’t like it either, OK? I know I used to hate my brother’s guts, but now I– I actually feel bad about lying to him.

Just not bad enough to tell him the truth.

Well, I am a bit protective of my vital organs. So, no, not tempted to tell him the truth. And honestly, I don’t really have a close bond like this with most of my siblings. I wouldn’t want to lose that.

How sweet. Too bad that bond is based in a lie.

You’re so negative sometimes.

Look, just be glad that I’m keeping your secret. And know that I’m only doing it because, in the end, it doesn’t really affect Alex. You may have roped Sarah and me into your scheme, and we both have our reasons for keeping quiet, but you’re the one who will lose everything if the truth comes out. [relaxed music] [soft dramatic music]

Dad, can I ask you something?

Go ahead. Shoot.

[sighs] Do you think Grandpa would be disappointed in me?

Why would you say that?

I was just thinking, when he left, he didn’t know about this baby. And so if he comes home and he learns that, A, I got a girl pregnant, and, B, that the girl and I are giving the baby away, what is he going to think about me?

Listen to me good. Your Grandpa, when he comes home, is going to be very proud of you for doing the right thing. He loves you. He always going to love you. OK?

You really think he’s going to be all right?

Yeah. That man has been on so many dangerous missions in his life. He always-

he always comes back to us. I believe he will. You’ll see.

You know what I feel like doing?

Hmm?

Batting cages. Go get dressed, because I– I think he would definitely approve of that.

I think that’s a good idea.

All right.

Let’s do it.

See you in a few. [knocking]

Hey, is Tate home? I need to talk to him.

Uh, he’s-

he’s in his room. Is everything OK?

No, not really.

Theresa, listen, if this is about the adoption, I know you had your reservations, but he said you were coming around to it.

No, it’s not about that. My mom’s leukemia’s back. [somber music]

Mom, what’s going on? [somber music]

Uh, well, I have some news about your Grandma Kimberly. Her leukemia is back.

Oh. Mom, I’m so sorry.

Do we know what her prognosis is?

No, it’s too soon to tell. But she’s going to start treatment right away.

I remember how hard this was on her the last time.

Yeah. [sniffles] That’s why, um, your Grandpa Shane has asked me to go be with her in California, and I said that I would.

Oh. [gasps] Hey, stranger.

Hi. Mm. Mwah. I thought you were going into the office.

I went. I’m on my way to a business meeting now, but I’m glad I ran into you. I can tell you how crazy my day has been so far.

Ooh, crazy in a confidential, mysterious, Titan business kind of way?

More of a two very interesting encounters back to back kind of way.

Oh.

I ran into your cousin, Theresa. She’s out of prison, did you know that?

Yeah, I did hear that. Sorry. I feel like I should have warned you.

No, it’s all right. I mean, obviously, it was jarring when I first saw her and her being back here in Salem, but…

Mm.

You know, as much as I hate what she did to me and what she did to my family, I, um– I’ve moved on from it, and that’s what I told her. And in the end, we actually ended on pretty good terms.

Well, that’s really good to hear.

Yeah.

She is my cousin, after all.

Yeah. Mm.

[chuckles] So what was the second interesting encounter?

That would be Joy. And she had some major news to share. [relaxed music]

Ms. Wesley.

Philip. I just want to say I really, really appreciate you giving me this opportunity, but I just don’t think that this is going to be a good fit for me. Now, normally I know I should give you much more of a notice, but I really hope you can understand when I say I would like for today to be my last day. I did what you said. I talked to Alex, and I really think it’s just best for me to leave the company.

Wow. When I gave you that advice, this isn’t what I expected. Alex didn’t do or say anything to make you leave, did he?

No, no. This– it’s not his fault. I need to be in New York right now. That’s where I belong.

So you’re moving home?

[sighs] I really am sorry to leave you in the lurch like this, but I’ve made up my mind.

[sighs] Well, in that case, all I can do is wish you luck. [soft dramatic music]

Thank you, Philip.

And give my best to Chloe.

[sighs]

You ran into Philip and Stephanie?

Well, I was just passing through the square and I saw them with their heads together. They didn’t notice me at first, and I overheard them talking about a secret that they’re keeping from Alex.

You were eavesdropping?

Don’t give me that look. They said that Alex would feel betrayed if he learned the truth. I wasn’t just going to go on my merry way after hearing something like that, so I kept listening, and then it all just started to click.

You mean you think that you figured out what they were talking about?

Oh, I know exactly what they were talking about. I mean, you do too, right?

I hope it’s OK that I’m leaving. I know you have so much going on with Sophia’s pregnancy and–

Mom, Mom, it’s fine. It’s totally fine. You need to go. She needs you. Grandma needs you, you know?

Are you sure? I mean, I just got here. I hate to leave, and you’re going to be so far away.

Well, I mean, what if I come with you?

No, you’ve got– you’ve got school, and you have the baby.

Yeah, but it’s OK. I’m on spring break. I can go for a few days, right?

I-

I don’t want to– I don’t want to overwhelm your grandma, OK? Let’s just– let’s just wait a bit.

OK. Just please, please tell Grandma that I love her and I’ll be praying for her. [somber music]

Same for me.

Thank you. Thank you to you both.

You know, Mom, I– Dad and I were going to the batting cages. Do you want to come with? It’d be fun, right?

Oh, boy. You know, as much as I would love to show you two how it’s done, I am– I actually have my-

my flight to catch later, so I– I need to head to the airport. So… I guess this is goodbye.

I love you, Mom.

I love you too.

Joy quit?

And she’s moving back to New York.

Wow.

Mm-hmm.

I hope we didn’t drive her away.

I said the exact same thing, Steph. She insisted that is what she wanted.

Well, that’s too bad. I mean, I thought once that she found out that she wasn’t pregnant with your baby, I thought maybe one day we could, I don’t know, start over, maybe be friends

Me too. Maybe.

Mm.

But as she pointed out, there really was nothing keeping her here in Salem. She thought it would be best for everyone if she moved back home.

Well, I hope it works out for her. Couldn’t have been an easy decision to make. [soft dramatic music]

Hey, Mom. Guess what? Yeah, I’m moving, uh– I’m moving back home, actually. No, I’m about to leave for the airport, so… I know. I know it seems sudden, but I will explain everything when I get home. All right, I’ll see you soon. [relaxed country music] [sighs]

[sighs]

[exhales] Nope. Hasn’t changed. Well, Salem, thanks for making me a soap star, I guess. [sighs]

Mom, I have good news. I ran into Stephanie, and she promised not to tell Alex or anyone else about the forged letter. Yes, I believe her. No, no one else was within earshot. I mean, not really. OK. Don’t freak out, but Xander did interrupt us. I said don’t freak out! He didn’t hear. I’m positive my brother doesn’t suspect a thing. [tense music]

Why would I know what Philip and Stephanie’s secret is?

Well, it’s obvious, isn’t it? Those two sneaks are having an affair behind Alex’s back.

An affair?

Well, they were together not too long ago. I guess they realized they had some, uh, unfinished business. God, I was so impressed that Philip was being mature about working with Alex. Turns out he’s secretly shagging Alex’s girlfriend!

Xander, hospital!

Sorry.

Look, let’s just– let’s back it up. Do we even know that they’re having an affair?

What other explanation could there be?

I don’t know.

It’s the only one that makes sense. Now, the question is, do I tell Alex?

No, you can’t.

Why not?

Because of Titan. You-

you and Philip still have to work together, and you’ve been getting along.

That’s true. Philip would be none too pleased if I told his dirty little secret. But what do you expect me to do, lie to Alex?

Well, I mean, it’s not an outright lie. Just one by omission.

Well, whatever you want to call it, I’d still be totally betraying his trust. So either I betray my cousin or my brother. Either way, something tells me that this secret could end up tearing my family apart.
