Yeah. Yeah, and that is the thing. Sophia’s mother didn’t get to know any of us. I mean, not really. Johnny and I were so busy pretending to be people that we weren’t just so that she would be OK with us adopting Sophia and Tate’s baby. 9
Well, the only thing that should matter to that woman is that you and Johnny are good people and will– will be excellent parents.

It just seems strange, you know, that you would be this careless about sex with Sophia, unless you weren’t thinking straight.

Yeah. Well, Roman, I appreciate it. And normally I would agree. But this time, I think we need to take a softer approach, you know, appeal to his humanity. If the three of us go storming into his office–

Is this really the right decision, Tate? I mean, what if this baby grows up with abandonment issues? Or what if the prospective parents are just absolute monsters?
Mom, thousands of babies are adopted every year, and most of them turn out just fine. Like, not every situation is like what happened to Aunt Eve. In fact, most aren’t.
Yeah, but you can never be so sure, can you?
I get it, OK? I get that adoption is a triggering concept for Grandpa Shane’s side of the family. But you can’t put all of that on me or all the people in the world that want to be parents. It’s just not fair.
How’d you get so levelheaded, huh? You definitely didn’t get that from me or your father.
I think you did a better job than you give yourself credit for. And I think that Johnny and Chanel will do a good job as well.

They are the ones who wanted to adopt your baby?
Well, yes, that was the plan. But the DiMeras didn’t exactly make the best impression on Sophia’s mother. So that’s the snag that Dad and I were talking about.
Yeah, well, I think that’s for the best, don’t you? I mean, isn’t that a little close to home? Johnny’s your second cousin, Tate.
I know. I know. And I’ve thought about that. But he and Chanel are the only ones who have even come close to meeting Mrs. Choi’s standards. And, you know, to be honest, I’m starting to think they’re impossibly high because she doesn’t want anyone else to raise the baby but me and Sophia.
And that’s a nonstarter for you?
Mom, we’re not even a couple.
So? I mean, my– me and your dad, we co-parented you just fine, didn’t we?
OK, yeah, but you guys are adults. Even if Sophia and I were together, it still doesn’t change the fact that we’re just too young. Mom, like, no! Like, I want to go to college next year. So does she. Like–

Sort of. I think it’s about what’s next for me. I guess I always thought that Shawn was the love of my life for as long as I can remember. You know, I wasn’t just Belle. We were Belle and Shawn, right? Belle and Shawn are coming over, or Belle and Shawn are back in town, or Belle and Shawn this or that. And our–our identities were so intertwined that who we were as people just got lost. And I think that’s why it was so hard for us to admit that we were struggling.
Honey, I’m so sorry.
No, don’t be. Don’t be. ‘Cause I think it’s a good thing that we got to this place. You know, I–I think we tried for so many years to work things out, and now I get to figure out who I am without Shawn. And if that means that I don’t find the kind of epic love that you and Dad have, then that’s OK. Maybe not everybody gets that. Maybe I don’t need a love of my life.

Yeah, the poor guy, not just kidnapped but replaced by a sadistic imposter. I could wring EJ’s neck for pulling the stunt again.

Seriously, have you forgotten that I walked in on the two of you?
OK, well, you know what? EJ and I are through. And I’ve also made that very clear to him in no uncertain terms.

I had nothing to do with Arnold Feniger coming back to Salem.
[chuckles] Wow, you really don’t respect me, do you? So I’m just supposed to believe that Arnold Feniger, the man that you hired once before to take over Rafe’s life, comes back and replaces him again and your hands are just completely clean? 40
Son, I give you my word. I did not bring back that vile man to town. Besides, we’re not even sure that that impostor was Feniger.

You know, you can lob baseless accusations at me until the end of time, Johnny, and I will never stop loving you. So blame whomever you want for what happened yesterday. And I will focus on making sure that things are good with Sophia’s mother.
And how do you intend to do that?
Oh, simple, really. With a do-over.

Yes. I’ll invite Amy Choi over for dinner. We will wine and dine her– with zero interruptions from Jada and Gabi this time. I will be my most charming self. And she will soon realize that you and Chanel are perfect parents for her grandchild.

Damn it, Steve, you know, what gets me is, Jada’s a good person, good cop. She didn’t deserve being duped like this by EJ. [dramatic music]
I’m just grateful that she learned the truth before too much harm was done.
Yeah, but, Steve, believe me, when somebody goes through something like that, it lingers for a while. Sami was traumatized by the last time Rafe was replaced. And you know how tough she is. She tried to convince people she was getting on with her life. But she never forgot it, and… I sure as hell didn’t either. So EJ can pretend all the hell he wants that he’s reformed, but I know he is still the scum of the earth.
Well, I can’t argue with that. But listen. Now that Rafe is back home, we can all focus on making sure that EJ pays for what he did. With any luck, Belle will throw the book at him.
Am I missing something here? Because I thought you couldn’t stand the idea of EJ and I together. I thought you hated him.
I do hate him. I also don’t want to face the– the fallout from your sister. 52
OK, Well, then why are you pushing me on this? Mom, I’m not in denial about who EJ is. That’s why I ended things with him.
But you knew all the terrible things he did to your family before you got involved with him again.
Yes, you’re right. And I don’t condone or justify any of the things that EJ has done. I just think that time has a way of making you forget things or, worse, reframe them. But when I found out what he did to Ava and I saw the hell that he put Jada through, I mean, that is all the reminder that I needed. So EJ and I are done. And I have reassured Paulina I don’t need to recuse myself from this case because I will personally see to it that EJ faces justice for what he’s done.
I don’t understand. You don’t want to adopt Tate and Sophia’s baby?
Of course we do.
Then what’s the issue?
You, Dad. You. Look, Chanel and I are handling this, all right? And after what happened yesterday, I would appreciate it if you just stay out of it.

I literally never said that.
No, it’s OK. I can see why you’d think that. But I’m not gonna apologize for having high standards about who gets to adopt my grandchild. That’s why your past crimes don’t concern me, Ms. Donovan. EJ DiMera’s, however, very much do.

[clears throat] I’ve been thinking about our conversation yesterday after Mrs. Choi left. You said that if I was working with Feniger, I’d never see you again.
I know what I said. I meant it. That man raped my mother.

But we rarely have spoken about my role in what he did those years back. Samantha sleeping with Arnold, thinking that he was her husband?

I hear you, OK? What happened to them was terrible. But I talked to my dad, OK? I talked to him about what went down the last time he brought Feniger to town. And he said it still haunts him to this day and that he never would have followed through with it if he knew that Arnold would have violated my mom like that.
Johnny, that is total BS, all right? That didn’t stop him from doing the same damn exact thing that Feniger did.
