THIS STILL NEEDS EXTENSIVE EDITING!
[soft dramatic music]
This might not have been what you wanted, Father, but it’s what the family needed.
Once we take over DiMera, you’ll see that forging that letter was for the best.
[glass shatters]
I know what you did. You lying, duplicitous snake. [dramatic music] [mellow jazz music]
Kristen, my love, is that you? [soft dramatic music]
[softly] Mother. It can’t be. You–
I’m alive, Kristen. Touch me. Take my hand. It’s really me. Dear God, I’ve missed you so.
Mother.
Oh. [laughs] [sighs]
After all these years, you’re alive. I mean, you’re really alive. I just can’t believe that–
Kristen?
Oh. Oh, Sarah. Hi. Sorry.
I–I don’t mean to intrude. I just– I wanted to see how you were doing. I heard that you had quite the mother-daughter reunion. [pensive music]
You know, I could get used to this.
Nice to see you’re making yourself at home.
Hey. [phone rings] [phone beeps]
Rita? No, Rafe did not escape. I moved him. Because there were far too many close calls, like Jada Hunter coming to the house. You don’t have to worry. I found the perfect place to stash him for the time being. Yeah. No one’s gonna find him here. It’s isolated, not a soul around for miles. [clattering] [tense music] I–I’m gonna call you back.
[soft orchestration] announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “Days of Our Lives.”
[knocking on door]
I’m kind of in the middle of something, Mom.
It’s your brother.
Oh. Come in.
Oh, you too busy for your mother but not for your brother, huh?
Well, you know, she’s kind of being a lot right now. And if she came in, I would never close up shop for the night.
Hmm. DA’s work is never done, huh?
Not in Salem, anyway.
[sighs] Well, I just– I just came by to say hi, so I have no reason to stay. I–I’ll go.
No, no. No, no, no. I know that look. What’s going on?
It’s Ava. I think something is really wrong. [suspenseful music]
Vitali, what on earth?
[grunts] Oh, EJ, you have to help me.
What are you doing here in Aremid?
Your bad-seed niece lured me here.
Rachel?
She wanted me out of the way so Mommy and Daddy could get back together.
That’s absurd. She’s 10. You expect me to believe she got the drop on you?
She had help.
Help from whom?
From me.
Who are you, and what are you doing here?
I could ask you the same questions. You’re trespassing in my house.
Your house?
EJ… this is Rachel Blake. Kristen’s mother.
Reunion? I– how did you–
Oh, it’s the–it’s the talk of the whole town. We’re all so relieved. That you and Brady found Rachel.
Right, of course. Yes.
And we’re all so lucky that she wasn’t hurt. It’s almost like somebody was looking out for her.
Oh, you have no idea.
Sorry?
Nothing, nothing. I’m just– listen, I’m really, really grateful for your kind words. I know how much you care about Rachel.
I always will. And I’m glad that, you know, everything worked out for the best.
Well, and for you too. I mean, it’s just wonderful to see you back on your feet. And the serum I gave you definitely worked miracles, didn’t it?
It did. But I guess the real miracle is that Xander didn’t have to hand over his company to you to get it. [tense music]
I don’t know what you’re getting at here, but I was just visiting Maggie.
Right. Another family member whose compassion you’ve exploited. Did you really think I wouldn’t find out?
What do you mean?
I have eyes and ears all over Titan. Your little game is over.
Look, man, we can talk–
You hired a private investigator to do opposition research on me?
What?
And you were stupid enough to use Titan funds to do it? As if I wouldn’t find out? Obviously, all this kumbaya brotherly love was a crock. You’re just trying to blackmail me out of dear old Dad’s company.
No, Xan. You’ve got it all wrong, and I can prove it.
Okay. This wasn’t you extending well wishes to my daughter. You’re obviously still holding a grudge over a little quid pro quo situation we found ourselves in.
Quid pro quo?
Mm-hmm.
Well, that’s a hell of a euphemism. This wasn’t a business transaction, Kristen. It was my life. You used my paralysis to try to extort my husband’s birthright from him. You’re damn right I’m holding a grudge.
You are such a hypocrite.
Excuse me?
You heard me, Saint Horton. Judging others when we both know that your beloved husband would do the exact same thing if the shoe had been on the other foot.
That is such a lie.
Mm.
Xander would never stoop so low.
Well, you know what? The only lie is the one that you’re telling yourself. Xander is as ruthless as I am. Yeah. And maybe even more so. [scoffs] [soft dramatic music]
I am done listening to your excuses.
Then don’t listen to me. See for yourself. I didn’t just stop by to visit Maggie. I wanted to drop that off.
What’s all this?
You can read, can’t you? Yeah, I did hire a private investigator, but I wasn’t digging up dirt on you. I was looking into the DiMera board members.
Then why did my assistant tell me that the investigator was asking questions about my past?
Like your time working with Kristen and Rolf? This was about her, not you. My PI is compiling a dossier of every voting member of the DiMera board, including Kristen. If we get leverage on any of them, we may be able to convince them to toss a couple votes our way.
Oh.
Yeah, “oh.” But I get why you jumped to the wrong conclusion. I should have asked you first.
Yes, you should have.
But it wasn’t a terrible idea. There is some good intel in here.
You’re welcome. I assume there was a thank-you in there somewhere.
What’s your takeaway from everything you found?
Uh, there’s not much we can exploit. Most of the DiMera siblings’ dirty laundry was already aired publicly.
Still, this dossier could give us a better idea of who we can flip. What about this guy, Peter Blake?
That’s Stefano’s adopted son, Kristen’s biological brother. I can’t imagine he’d turn on her.
Why not? Blood’s not always everything.
Case in point. But in this instance, Peter and Kristen have always been loyal to one another, especially after everything the Blakes went through together.
What do you mean? What’s the story there? [soft dramatic music]
Mm. No, that’s impossible. You’re not Rachel Blake. Kristen’s mother died decades ago.
Don’t assume you know anything about me or my family.
I am family. I’m Kristen’s brother.
You’re not my Peter.
This is EJ DiMera, Stefano’s son.
Oh. Well, if anyone would know about cheating death, it would be the son of the Phoenix.
If you really are who you say you are, how did you survive?
Long story. Would it suffice to say that “reports of my death been greatly exaggerated”?
Rachel Blake would have let her daughter know that she’s alive.
She already knows.
What?
I just witnessed the warm and fuzzy reunion between the two of them.
And why hasn’t Kristen said anything?
Because she decided to help her mother and her daughter keep me captive. But the jig is up, lady. And you’re going to wish that you were dead once the cops are done dealing with you. A little help here, EJ.
EJ’s not going to help you do anything. Not if he knows what’s good for him.
I know it’s been a minute since you’ve worked here, but you do remember the no smoking policy, right?
Yeah. Yeah, of course. I just–you know.
You just what? Hmm? Celebrating your victory?
Hmm. All right, let me guess. Paulina tell you the good news?
I’d hardly call you stealing my job from me good news. And no, I had to find out from Shawn because you didn’t have enough decency to tell me yourself.
All right, all right, all right. Look, let’s not make this any more difficult than we need to, okay?
Are you serious right now? EJ framed me, and my fiancé helped him do it. You took his money, and you dug up those false allegations against me.
Well, if EJ is framing you, he’s doing a hell of a job.
What is that supposed to mean?
It means the more you try and fight this, the more you’re just making trouble for yourself. Now, keeping those allegations that you’re accused of out in the public just makes you look worse. So, right or wrong, EJ won, okay? So maybe it’s just best for everyone if we just, um, you know, accept what happened and move on with our lives.
You know, if you really think that I am going to do nothing after EJ took my job and my reputation away from me, then you have lost your damn mind.
Okay, I mean, I get that Ava leaving town was abrupt, but I don’t think going to see Tripp is all that out there. He is her son. And she did text you about it.
Except that she’s not with Tripp.
What? What do you mean?
When I–[sighs] When I couldn’t reach Ava, Steve reached out to Tripp, and he had no idea that Ava was planning to visit him.
Okay. Well, maybe she was going to surprise him, and her flight got delayed.
No, I checked that out, too. And there was no record of her booking a flight to Hong Kong.
Huh. Well, I guess I can see why you’re concerned.
Yeah. I sent Steve the last voicemail I got from Ava. He thought maybe he could analyze it through the metadata, but– it might give us a clue as to where she might be.
All right, well, if anybody can get to the bottom of it, it’s Steve. You’ll find her.
I know. I know. I hope so.
You know what? I think all of this can wait until tomorrow.
Yeah?
I am yours for the rest of the night, whatever you want to do. And if I can distract you from fearing the worst, count me in. [claps]
Great. Let’s start with what’s going on with you and Marlena.
Oh, well, I wouldn’t even know where to start with that.
Really? How about when you slept with EJ? [suspenseful music]
EJ, don’t listen to her. Look, I know you hate me, but you cannot let this crazy lady keep me prisoner here.
I’d watch who you call crazy, young lady.
EJ, please. Please, you have to get me out of here.
Oh, save your breath. EJ is not gonna save you.
And you presume to know what I’ll do?
Yes, I do. Unless you’d like me to tell my guest here what really brought you here tonight to my home.
EJ… what is she talking about? EJ, answer me! What is going on?
I think you and I should talk privately, don’t you think?
No, no, no. EJ. EJ! You can’t let her– [muffled] EJ! Come on!
After you.
EJ! EJ! EJ! [screams]
You’re wrong about Xander. He is nothing like you. He doesn’t value money and power over people’s lives.
[chuckles] Do you truly believe that? Or do you just have to tell yourself that to, uh, sleep in bed next to him at night?
Not everyone is as delusional as you, Kristen.
Ooh! Okay, you know what? I’m a lot of things, but delusional I am not. I know who I am, sweetheart. Question is, do you know who your husband is? Because if he had the leverage over me that I had over him with that serum, you can bet your newly mobile ass that he would use it to go after DiMera.
Now, here’s what I think is for the best. You leave tonight, and you never tell a soul you found Ava Vitali in my home.
And if I don’t?
Oh, you’re gonna make me say it. I saw you stash a brawny gentleman upstairs. If you go to the authorities about Ava, I’ll just have to come clean about your special guest. I’m sure the Salem Police would love to know what you’ve been up to here in Aremid.
Are you really suggesting that I don’t push back on what EJ did to me? That I just take it lying down? That son of a bitch trashed my name and tanked my career!
All right, Jada, look. Listen to me, okay? After some time passes, this, uh– this scandal of yours won’t be front page news anymore. And then I can convince the mayor to hire you as detective. [tense music]
Working for you?
Well, yeah. Hey. Hey, hey, hey, hey. Come on. Don’t you see? Don’t you see, once that happens, we can go back to the way things were, both professionally and personally.
[grunts]
What did you do that for?
How dare you touch me after what you pulled.
I was trying to make it up to you.
Screw that, Rafe. And screw you, too. [soft dramatic music] Were you really that insecure about losing your job to me that you would align yourself with EJ just to take me down?
That’s not how it went.
The hell it wasn’t. You know, I am– I’m finally seeing things clearly now. And most importantly, I’m seeing you for exactly who you are. You are a vile, chauvinistic pig who is threatened by a Black woman in power. It’s like–like you’re a completely different person than who I thought you were.
You know what? You can keep this job, Rafe. And you can keep this, too. ‘Cause I don’t want either one of them. And I sure as hell don’t want you.
Know this, Ms. Blake. I don’t take kindly to threats.
Oh, no. No threat here. I’m just stating the consequences of your actions. You get to be the author of what comes next.
[chuckles] I won’t be pushed around by you.
[sighs] How do you not see that we’re on the same side? Kristen is my daughter. And you clearly see her as a sister.
She is, in every way that counts.
Then you must care about your niece, my namesake. I’m doing this for both of them.
Kristen wouldn’t involve her daughter in something so dangerous.
This is all my granddaughter’s doing. But when Kristen learned the truth, she realized what would happen to Rachel if Ava was released. Can you imagine the repercussions for her? They would send her off to psychiatric evaluation at best. At worst, she might spend time in a juvenile detention center. Is that the future you want for your niece? I mean, who deserves a second chance more, your niece or Ava Vitali?
[sighs] I see the hesitation on your face. Why? You clearly have no love for that woman in there.
[scoffs] Yeah, that’s one way of putting it. Ava kidnapped my mother once.
How cruel.
Yeah.
[gasps] Then we could view this as karmic retribution. Wouldn’t you agree that the scales have finally balanced?
[scoffs] Mom told you about EJ?
Mm-hmm. Oh, I got an earful.
Unbelievable! Salem’s top shrink is now the town gossip? God, it’s none of her business.
Well, she did walk in on you and EJ together. Makes it kind of hard for it not to be her business after that.
Okay, well, then she should take a lesson from you and knock first.
You–[grunts] You know what I’m not hearing? I’m not hearing, “You know, sleeping with EJ, that was–that was a very wise and healthy decision.”
[scoffs] I never claimed that it was!
Then what’s going on? Because what– is this a rebound thing from your divorce with Shawn? ‘Cause let me tell you something. You are allowed to have a one-night stand with someone other than your sister’s ex or the guy that tried to steal your brother’s baby.
Okay, okay, I get it.
You’re allowed to do that.
There’s a million reasons why EJ is terrible for me.
Exactly. So what’s your issue?
My issue is that despite all of that, there’s just– [sighs] There’s just this attraction between us. And don’t ask me to explain it because I can’t. It’s just that– it’s like he’s this– it’s like he’s this puzzle that I need to solve.
Oh, God. Yeah, this is worse than I thought. You have it really bad, Belle.
[sighs]
What do you not get? Xander became a better man for us so that he and I could be together. Whereas you– well, you won’t change for anyone, which is why Brady is with Ava instead of you.
Oh. You have sharper claws than I would have guessed. Okay. So maybe I was wrong. And maybe you’re not in denial about who Xander is. Maybe you’re becoming more like him. Hmm.
You have no idea what you’re talking about.
Okay, no, no, no. This is a good thing, really. Because you and Xander have to be in lockstep now that Philip is back.
What’s that supposed to mean?
Oh, come on. I mean, it’s got to drive Xander crazy insane that he has to split Titan with his brother. I mean, I’m sure he’s coming up with a million ways to push him out. [chuckles]
Well, for your information, things are going quite well between Xander and Philip.
Oh. Okay, great. [clears throat] You know, sticking to the company line. Oh, come on. We both know, us girls, we know that Xander isn’t one to share his toys, hmm? Especially not his half-brother who grew up with a silver spoon in his mouth. But I guess he really didn’t have a choice, did he, when Philip produced that letter from Victor?
Something I said?
I think we’re done here. I have to get home.
I am really glad that Rachel is back home safe where she belongs. Truly.
[groans] What the hell is with that girl?
So Stefano was close to Kristen and Peter’s parents? That’s why he adopted them when they died?
Uh, it’s more complicated than that.
It always is.
Rachel Blake, Kristen’s mother, wasn’t actually dead. She was hiding away in some spooky, old house in Aremid.
Is she still with us?
No. She did eventually die. She was caught in an explosion beneath the streets of Paris.
[exhales] Hell of a story.
You don’t know the half of it.
Still, I can see why Kristen and Peter would have each other’s backs.
If you ask me, most of the DiMeras are the same way. They usually can’t stand each other, but they’ve all been through the ringer.
Trauma bonding.
Exactly. They’ll double cross one another, but they won’t break ranks.
Which makes most of the shareholders dead ends. Tony, Chad, Stefan, Johnny, Sydney, Theo, Steven Hawk.
Maybe we don’t focus on the family. One of the company’s largest shareholders isn’t a DiMera at all.
Wei Shin? No, I doubt he’d even listen to our pitch.
I wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss him. He’s got to be holding a grudge against the DiMeras after what happened to his son.
Why? Gabi and Stefan had nothing to do with Li’s death.
No, they didn’t. But EJ and Melinda waited almost a full year to reopen the case. Li’s killer was walking the streets because EJ was too embarrassed to clean up his own mess. Speaking of, I should clean this up. Where can I find a broom and pan around here?
Ah–it’s fine. I’ll let the staff know.
No, the staff talks. Wouldn’t you rather Maggie not know we had a little dust-up?
Fair enough. Look, for what it’s worth, I’m sorry, Philip. I should have given you the benefit of the doubt. And as far as this mess goes, please let me give you a hand. It was my fault, after all. Plus, I bet Victor will get a kick out of seeing us work together like real brothers. Make the old man proud. [soft dramatic music]
Hey, Jada. Jada, hold on. Let’s talk about this.
No, I have nothing left to say to you.
Hey, are you okay?
No, I’m not. Can you get me out of here?
Yeah. Yeah, of course. Come on.
Just– what? What are you gawking at? Back to work, you mooks. [tense music]
[clattering]
Do I even want to know?
Uh, we were brainstorming. Got a little carried away.
But it’s getting late. I should get out of your hair.
Actually, Mom wanted me to ask you to stay for dinner.
That’s generous of Maggie, as always. But room service is calling my name.
No, you should stay. [tender music]
Really?
Yeah, really.
You are family.
Well, you don’t have to twist my arm.
Great. I’ll tell Cook that we’re expecting one more for dinner. [pensive music]
The glass? Brainstorming, or did you two get into a fistfight again?
Chalk it up to a misunderstanding. But I think we had a breakthrough. We’re on our way to being great partners. Maybe even brothers.
Oh. Good. I really needed to hear that after tonight.
What happened?
I had a run-in with Kristen DiMera. Got ugly.
Over what she did to you?
No. It’s about you and Xander. She kept going on about how my husband would never want to share Titan. And all I kept thinking was that maybe keeping this secret of yours isn’t such a good idea. Maybe it’s all for nothing.
You made the right decision for Xander and our family. Don’t let Kristen get in your head.
She almost did. But then Xander asked you to stay for dinner. And I know that probably seems like nothing, but that is a huge step for him. So if you two really did have a breakthrough, then it was all worth it.
The only way that this family moves forward is if Xander never finds out that Victor’s letter was a forgery.
You don’t think I see what you’re doing? You’re hoping to use my hatred for Ava to get me to go along with your twisted kidnapping scheme.
Ah, you’re one to talk about twisted kidnapping schemes. Or is that man tied up in the attic here of his own volition?
Fine. This is how it’s going to work, Mother Blake. I won’t say anything about Ava as long as you don’t say anything about the man upstairs.
That’s all I was proposing. Shall we shake on it?
Not yet. I have my interests here, true. But more than anything, I am doing this for Kristen and my niece. If anything should happen to Ava, I cannot do anything to protect them. I need your word that you are not going to hurt her, or the special guest upstairs, for that matter.
You have my word. Now do we have a deal?
[line trilling
Damn it. Where are you, Mother? I need to know that Ava is under your control. What is going on over there? [tense music]
[phone ringing]
Ah. Thank God you don’t drink, because I am definitely gonna need a designated driver tonight.
Wow. Your conversation with Rafe went that bad?
It was beyond bad. It was horrible. You know, he had– he had the nerve to tell me to just accept the way things are, to just let it go. Can you believe that?
No. No, I–really, I can’t.
Mm. Oh, and I told him. I told him. I told him where he could shove his damn advice, because I will never accept what EJ is doing to me. What Rafe is doing to me. And I told him straight to his face. I did. It’s like–I don’t know. It’s like he’s a completely different person. And at least with Bobby, you know, he at least had a mental illness. What’s Rafe’s excuse?
I don’t know. I mean, sometimes you just don’t know the people you love as well as you thought you did.
I know. I’ve had a few of those. [soft dramatic music] I don’t think we’re talking about Rafe anymore.
[sighs] It’s Belle. She slept with EJ again.
Seriously? I thought she had standards.
Yeah. I mean, not that it’s any of my business. She said that it was a one-time thing and that wasn’t going to happen again, but I don’t know. I’m just not sure I believe her.
Belle, what are you doing here? I’m sorry to say this, but maybe you shouldn’t believe her.
Brady, I love you to death. But if you think that I’m going to let you of all people question my love life, you–
I’m just calling it like it is, okay? You’ve been with Shawn for a long time, Belle, okay? And he’s always been true blue, Mr. Moral Compass. And now you’re hanging out with a guy who’s a little more dangerous– EJ.
Okay. I am not some teenage girl going after the town bad boy.
Are you sure about that?
[scoffs] All right, fine. Yes, maybe there is something very alluring about being with someone who’s completely wrong for you.
Ah. Preaching to the choir. Sis, I’ve been where you’re at. I’m still where you’re at. I have my lovely toxic DiMera sibling that I have to deal with that I just can’t quite quit. [soft dramatic music] It can be punishing at times. I just–I just– I’m just worried about you, and I want you to be careful, okay?
I will be. Brady, you don’t have to worry about me. When it comes to EJ DiMera, my eyes are wide open. [line trilling] [ominous music] [phone beeps]
Now’s not a good time. Whatever this is about will have to wait.
No, no, no, no. No can do, my man. I just had a run-in with Jada. Yeah, it got pretty tense.
That is neither surprising nor urgent.
EJ, listen to me. She said I was like a different person. She’s on to us!
Would you calm down? She doesn’t suspect a damn thing, and she won’t if you keep your mouth shut and do exactly as you’re told. Now, as I said, we will talk about this tomorrow. I have other pressing matters to attend to.
EJ!
Good night. [phone beeps]
Ah. I thought you had better phone etiquette than that. I couldn’t make out what it was, but– hmm? Who was on the phone?
No one important.
Here you are. Oh, come on, dear brother. What’s the matter? Hmm? Looks like you’ve seen a ghost.
In a manner of speaking, I have. We need to talk, dear sister.
About?
How I met your mother.
[gasps, exhales] [tense music]
Restraints are very secure, Ms. Vitali. You won’t be getting loose anytime soon. Allow me.
Where’s EJ?
Oh, he couldn’t stay. Places to go, people to see.
He just left me here?
I’m afraid EJ isn’t gonna help you, dear. Nobody is.
Nothing is more important than family. We agree on that much, right?
Okay, we’re all set. Dinner should be ready soon.
Can’t wait! I’ve been craving one of Cook’s gourmet meals for months now. I’ll have to thank Maggie.
Well, she’s thrilled that you’re joining us. Actually, she wanted to know if you want the staff to fix up a guest room since it’s already getting so late.
Maggie means well, but maybe we shouldn’t push our luck.
Oh, I don’t know. Look, I’ve been thinking about the DiMera family a lot, and they have way more bad blood between them than we do between us. And yet, unlike us, they remain a united front. So I’m thinking if we’re gonna try and take down DiMera, maybe we should take a leaf out of their book. [suspenseful music]
What do you mean?
Well, I was just thinking that until we successfully take over DiMera, Philip should stay here. Look, I know we’ve had our differences, but you are my brother. This is your house too. So why don’t you move back in?
