THIS STILL NEEDS EXTENSIVE EDITING!
[light music]
[crunching]
[crunching stops]
Thank goddess. [keyboard keys clacking]
Mm. Leo, could you get me some more guava pineapple juice, please?
My pleasure.
Ah.
I could use a break from my five minutes of writing.
Mm.
Enjoy. Quietly.
Mm-hmm.
Mm! Oh. This is so good! Ooh! Leo, thank you for taking care of me after that psycho nearly killed me.
Oh, don’t mention it… or anything else.
Leo, would you come fluff my pillows, please, that way you do?
[siren wailing]
Mm.
[gasps] Hey, Mom.
Hey.
Hi.
Wow.
Oh.
Hi.
Hi.
Those are beautiful.
[sighs] I see they’re not your first.
[laughs]
God, how are you feeling?
I am feeling much better since the antidote kicked in.
I’m so glad to hear that. God, what a nightmare.
No kidding. I think your dad put on a brave face, but I think that– quite a scare, you know, seeing me collapse like that.
I’ll bet. I was pretty freaked out when Alex passed out… right after he told me he wanted to be with me. [dramatic music]
[chuckles]
[sighs]
Joy.
Hey. Hey, I was just thinking about you.
[whimpering]
Bonnie? Bonnie.
Huh?
Hey.
Oh, Johnny. Sorry. I was just zoning out. Should you be up and around? I mean, I heard about the poisoned scripts.
Oh, yeah. No, that wasn’t exactly fun, but I’ll be fine.
You sure?
Yeah, that antidote, it– it worked like a charm. They kept me overnight for observations, but I’m good to go.
Good. Mm.
How are you?
I don’t know. [chuckles] All things considered, not too bad, I guess. They just unwired my jaw, so I never thought I’d be so stoked to see a big bowl of Jell-O. [both chuckle]
Well, lime is my favorite.
Dude, no, me too!
Yeah.
Serious? [laughs] Ooh. Ah.
So…you waiting on someone or what?
No, I-I figured the orderly was gonna come back and roll me back to my room, but… I saw the elevator, and I just stopped cold.
Bad memories, huh?
I feel like Whitley King is on the other side of those doors, waiting to swallow me up, but…
I get it, all right? But look, now that Whitley’s been exposed, she can’t hurt us anymore or the show.
Yeah, I mean, Roman, I-I’m fine. I–really, I missed the whole thing. Uh-huh. Well, actually, I’m one of the lucky ones. [laughs] Yeah. I-I mean, I’m the only one who wasn’t targeted by the lunatic. [laughs] [ominous music]
Oh, my God.
[soft orchestration] announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “Days of Our Lives.”
[ominous music]
What? [sighs] What? Yeah, no. No, it’s nothing to worry about at all. Just a little– a little crisis on set, yeah. Actually, I should probably go and take care of things. Listen, you have a good time in Chicago, OK? Yes, give Rex my love, and I will talk to you real soon. I love you too. Bye.
Well, hello, Kate.
Look at this. I found it on my desk.
Oh.
Oh? Oh? That’s all you can say? Because obviously, Whitley is at it again, and we need to call the police.
Easy. Easy, Kate. Whitley’s no longer a threat. She’s under 24-hour watch at Bayview.
Then how’d this get here?
Well, they–they took some photos from Whitley’s room. And they found this one on her nightstand.
[scoffs] So what did you– did you put it here? What, is this a souvenir?
I wanted you to understand the gravity of this situation because it’s up to us to figure out what to do about it.
Greetings, “Body & Soul”-ers.
Seth, wow. You’re looking good.
Thanks.
Yeah, how are you– how are you feeling?
I’m on the mend, much like you two. I’m glad I ran into you, Bonnie. It saves me a trip to your room. I have this document for you to sign.
Oh. What–what is it?
Ah, just boilerplate, saying that you hold harmless University Hospital and all of its subsidiaries regarding your accident, as well as indemnify us against any further action. And you just sign right there…
Oh.
On the bottom line.
Oh, OK.
Bonnie, I-I wouldn’t do that if I were you. [tense music] * *
So you’re not gonna be “Body & Soul’s” publicist anymore?
I realized I needed to separate my career and my personal life. It wasn’t worth losing out on being with Alex just to keep one client.
And he’s all in on the relationship?
I told him I wanted to be with him, and he responded in kind.
Well, that’s wonderful. I know it’s what you wanted all along.
Even when I didn’t want to admit it to myself. [laughs]
I’m very happy for you, baby.
The only downside is, you and I won’t be working together after all.
Oh, no. Oh, no. I was so looking forward to working with you in that capacity, even though it wouldn’t have been for very long.
Mm.
[chuckles] But listen, after what happened, I cannot complain about you distancing yourself from “Body & Soul.”
Yeah, I can’t decide if I picked the worst week to leave or the best.
Well, seeing how happy you are, I think you made the right decision.
Yeah. Yeah. There’s just one little problem. [dramatic music]
Can I ask you why you were thinking about me?
I just–I keep flashing back to how you found me last night after I passed out, how you saved my life.
Oh. I’m just glad that Stephanie and I got there when we did.
Right. Right, yeah, no, I’m super lucky that the two of you were together.
Yeah.
Alex, I’m– I’m really grateful that you were there for me.
[grunting] How’s that? Fluffy enough for you?
Oh, the edge is kind of sticking out a little bit. It’s perfect now. Thanks!
My pleasure. That’s it for now. I need to finish this story.
The story? What’s it about?
Well, it’s about Charlemagne, actually.
About me? I mean, not me. Not me, but yeah. What happens?
Well, it’s pretty juicy, actually. See, Charlemagne gets kidnapped by her former maid and replaced with an exact duplicate.
An exact duplicate?
Mm-hmm.
Is Marlena coming in for it?
Not that I’m aware of.
Oh. Who are you gonna get to– [jazzy music] You want me to play both parts?
That’s the beauty of it. Two parts, two paychecks. What do you think? It’s a home run, right?
[laughs] No, I gotta pass.
You don’t want to play two roles?
Sorry, no.
But this is every actor’s dream, Getting to create two wholly different characters with different backgrounds, different ways of speaking and behaving. It’s the stuff Emmys are made of.
I get the concept.
And you heard the part about two salaries, right? What’s not to love?
Nothing. Everything.
I’m lost.
Look, Leo, this hits a little close to home for me, OK? Everybody in this town knows I did that. I-I-I-I pretended to be Marlena. I mean, I-I-I took over her life, and I ended up in prison too.
Hattie, that’s why this is perfect for you. You get to reclaim it. And with the personal experience to draw from, you get to bring truth to the character.
Oh. And I could even add some layers to it.
Oh, so many layers.
Like a seven-layer cake.
Oh, at least.
Yeah. And, you know, I-I-I tend to go deep with my characters.
And it hasn’t gone unnoticed.
Yeah. Still, the idea of replacing somebody that you look like just seems like it’s a little–
Deliciously sordid?
I was gonna say played out. Don’t you think?
No, obviously, I don’t think that, or I wouldn’t have pitched it. I think it’s classic. And the fans love when they get to see a beloved actor play something new. Look, we need something big for Charlemagne. This, this is gonna drive six months of story. [jazzy music]
You don’t have to worry. [both laugh] You are such an amazing writer.
Oh.
You’ll think of a new storyline.
They should be letting me out of here soon. I’m actually trying to push for them to let me out before tomorrow.
Really? What–what’s tomorrow?
Hello? Valentine’s Day.
Ah. Right, Valentine’s Day. I didn’t think you’d be up to doing anything. You should probably take it easy.
I’m sure I’ll be well enough to go out to dinner. And since I basically owe you everything…
Ah.
I would like to take you out.
That is not necessary.
Oh, no, I know that it hardly makes up for you saving my life, but it’s a start. [dramatic music] Unless there’s some reason that you don’t want to go out with me.
So Alex and Joy haven’t broken up yet?
Let’s just say he’s having a little trouble extricating himself from the situation.
But they weren’t dating very long, right?
No, not really.
Well, I mean, I don’t want her to be hurt or anything, but it seems like they could part ways amicably.
That’s what I was hoping for. But after everything that Joy went through with the whole Johnny mess, she’s– she’s honestly a little dependent on Alex right now.
I see.
And then after he and I decided to be together, we found her unconscious in her room.
She was poisoned too?
Uh-huh.
Oh, come on.
Yeah, but she’s doing a lot better, just like you. But Alex and I decided that maybe he shouldn’t kick her while she’s down, you know?
It’s a difficult position to be in. But, you know, I imagine she’s gonna want to go back home, right? And then maybe Alex can let her down gently and… the two of you could start your relationship.
I really hope so.
Look, I know it was a traumatic situation, but we’re in the entertainment business, and overzealous fans come with the territory, Abe.
Kate, there is a difference between passion and–and criminal behavior.
No, I-I agree. And Whitley is a really disturbed person, but that doesn’t mean that she gets to dictate how we produce our show.
You really believe that?
Yeah, I do. Yeah, the show must go on. It was a serious situation, I’m not denying that, but we’re out of the woods now, Abe.
Are you sure? Justin is still threatening to sue the hospital.
Yeah, well, his wife is the star of the show, so he’s not gonna hurt us and he’s not gonna hurt the show.
His wife nearly died!
Yeah. It’s a terrible thing. It really is. But he’s gonna calm down.
Well, what if others in the cast decide they’re gonna sue? You know, we both know that this is an untenable situation.
[sighs] What are you saying, Abe?
Well, what I’m saying is that there’s only one– one–solution to our problem.
Johnny, no offense, but you’re not directing this scene.
And I understand that. However, I’m sure that Justin, Bonnie’s husband and attorney, wouldn’t mind taking a look at this paperwork before she signs it, just to, you know, make sure everything’s aboveboard.
I assure you, everything that we do here is aboveboard. [chuckles]
To be honest, I’m actually having a hard time with all the legal mumbo jumbo.
So you’re–you’re not gonna sign it?
Let it go, Seth. She just fell down an elevator shaft.
Yeah, and you and I were poisoned. Things happen in this town. The psycho per capita rate is one of the highest in the nation. We’re accepting risk just by living here.
I’m not sure that’s really the argument you want to make.
Look, Bonnie, I know that the last thing you want to do is make things more difficult for the show, especially with all the struggles that we’ve been through lately.
Of course not.
OK, which is why you should be aware that if you and your husband were to pursue a lawsuit, the hospital would have no choice but to withdraw its permission for “Body & Soul” to shoot here.
But they rely on the hospital to be able to shoot their scenes.
They do, and I’m not sure that the show and the budget could sustain that loss. And you wouldn’t want that, would you? So why don’t you go ahead and just sign? Because all of our futures depend on it.
[phones beep]
Meeting for all cast and crew?
Did you know about this?
Well, I’ve been a little preoccupied with almost dying and all, but no, Abe and Kate didn’t say anything to me.
What do you think it’s about?
If you wouldn’t mind, you know, signing the paper. [elevator bell dings]
[gasps] Oh. [dramatic music] Oh.
Oh. They’re freaking out too.
I guess we all got that same text about the emergency meeting?
Yeah, we’re just trying to figure out what it means.
Ah. They smell amazing.
Mm, probably better than hospital disinfectant, right?
That’s for sure. [phone beeps] Oh, eek. What is it? Oh.
Ooh, don’t tell me they think you’re on call.
No, it’s from Abe and Kate. They’re calling an emergency meeting at the hospital.
Right now?
You don’t know what it’s about?
Not a clue. Wonder if Alex knows.
[sighs] You don’t–you don’t have any other plans for Valentine’s Day, do you?
Um– [phones beep]
Was that me?
I think it was both of us. Is Kate and Abe texting you too?
Yeah, yeah, emergency meeting for the cast and crew?
Yeah, here at the hospital. Wonder what that’s about.
I don’t know. But we should probably head there and find out.
You feel up to it?
Yeah. Yeah, I’m fine.
OK.
As long as I have you with me. [both chuckle]
I’ll go get you a wheelchair.
OK.
All right.
Hey, guys. I’m sure that this is just an update on Whitley King. Abe and Kate probably just want to reassure us that we don’t have to worry about any more poisoned scripts.
By the way, I will never forgive you all for believing I wrote that trash.
Hey, it wasn’t that bad, except for it being poisoned, I mean.
Please, my stories are so much better, not to mention they’re nontoxic.
Oh.
Oh.
[chuckles] Joy, it’s so good to see you. You look so much better.
Thank you, Stephanie. I’m glad to see that you’re doing better too, Dr. Johnson.
Well, I’m just so glad that we all got the antidote in time.
Yeah, I’m just–I’m grateful that Alex came when he did– well, Alex and Stephanie, that is. You were with him, right, Stephanie?
Yes, I was.
[elevator bell dings]
Oh, look. [Kate clears throat]
Hello. Hello, everyone.
[clears throat]
I want to thank you– thank you all for coming.
Yes, and first off, we want to say how grateful we are for everyone who received a poisoned script that you’re– you’re doing better and you’re on the road to recovery and that Bonnie is on the road to recovery as well.
Yes, Bonnie, Bonnie. [applause]
I-I do want to reassure all of you that Whitley King is under 24-hour watch at Bayview.
Yes, and she won’t be able to hurt any of us again.
Yay.
Good.
And we are, of course, cooperating with the Salem PD to make sure she remains locked up. I’m sure each of you will be contacted by the police soon so you can make a statement.
Well, to hell with her. When do we get back to work?
[chuckles] Hattie, thank you for that question. Actually, that’s what we wanted to talk to everyone about. This past week has been a harrowing one. Abe and I did not take any of the incidents lightly. Nothing is more important to us than the health and the well-being of our employees, which is why we decided that we couldn’t go ahead with the show unless we could be certain that we could create a very safe working environment, which is the reason that we’ve decided, after very careful consideration, to pull the plug on “Body & Soul.”
What?
What?
So you’re pulling the plug on the show? That’s it?
So it’s just– it’s just over?
Isn’t that an overreaction?
Look, we’re sorry. I-I-I know this must come as a shock.
Considering the events of the past few weeks, we just don’t feel comfortable returning to production on “Body & Soul.” We feel like it’s too dangerous. If anyone else got hurt, we couldn’t live with ourselves.
Wait, but nobody else gets a say? I mean, I’m the one who took a header down the elevator shaft, and I’m more than happy to get back on that horse.
That’s the whole point, OK? Almost everyone here spent last night in the hospital.
Yeah, but the show can’t end, not like this.
Yeah, yeah, what’s gonna happen to Charlemagne’s stor– I mean, what’s gonna happen to the story?
I–look, I’m sorry. I-I should have been clearer. But the story won’t end.
What do you mean?
Well, that’s what makes soap operas special. They never end.
But you said that you were ending it.
Are you saying that it’s continuing without you?
Is that even possible?
So when we called the network this afternoon to tell them that we would not be returning to production, needless to say, they were very upset. They love the show. It’s a top producer for them. The last thing they wanted to hear was that “Body & Soul” was ending prematurely.
Oh, man, I’m so confused. Are we ending, or are we not ending?
Well, we’re still too concerned with everyone’s safety to continue our production, which is why the network has offered to step in, buy the rights, and produce the show themselves.
So the show will go on?
Yes, yes, but not here in Salem.
Well, then where?
They’re going to bring the production to Los Angeles.
Oh, let me guess. They’re gonna replace all of us with big Hollywood stars.
No, no. They want to keep the current cast.
Oh. So we’re not losing our jobs?
No. They told us they were willing to have the entire cast come with the show as long as they were willing to relocate to California. [tense music]
Thank you.
Yeah. Wow, that’s not what I was expecting.
Me either. That must have been a hard decision for Kate and Abe. I mean, I know how much they both loved producing that show.
And everyone looked shocked.
Well, color me shocked. I can’t believe this! What?
We were just saying the same thing.
Yeah, look at me. Such bad timing. I just get on the show, and then it’s over.
Oh, wait. Are you saying you’re not taking the part?
No. Of–of course I’m not. Bonnie–Bonnie, it was just a temporary recast. I never had any intention of taking the part for real. And now that it’s shooting in California, I am certainly not going there to take it.
Oh, Kayla, thank you. Thank you. No, seriously, that is a load off. I was kind of afraid I was gonna have to fight you for it. [chuckles]
Oh. So does this mean you’re moving to LA, Bonnie?
Well, I have to talk to Justin first, obviously, but it kind of feels good to have an option. [chuckles] And if my TV son follows the show, he’s going to need a mama. [chuckles]
Did Alex say that he was following the show?
Oh, I haven’t talked to him yet. But let’s face it. I mean, he and Joy are the hot young stars. I mean, the network execs must be doing everything to try to convince him, right? [dramatic music]
Thank you.
You’re welcome. Hmm. I gotta say, that announcement took me by surprise.
It is pretty shocking news.
Mm.
But it’s–it’s not terrible news, right? I mean, the network loves the show enough to save it.
[sighs]
And they want to keep the whole cast?
And they want to move us to LA.
I know, but that’s exciting, right? I mean, I’ve–I’ve–I’ve always wanted to live there.
Yeah.
[sighs]
I mean, we’re gonna take the offer, right?
[sighs] Well, now that Pineview is picking up stakes and heading out West, what are y’all gonna do?
Well, I’m definitely going.
Just like that, huh?
Yeah. I mean, I have to. I’m the star of– I’m one of the stars of the show.
Johnny, what about you?
[sighs] Well, obviously, I need to discuss it with Chanel, but honestly, we’re just kind of getting back on track. So I-I don’t know that asking her to move across the country is the best decision for us right now.
Yeah. I’ve spent most of my life drifting from place to place, nothing holding me down. But I just fixed things with Javi. I don’t know if I want to mess that up again.
Yeah, maybe you don’t have to.
What do you mean?
Look, I’m the director, right? I have to be on set. But you could write the show from anywhere, so you could just tell the network you want to stay on as head writer and just keep writing from here. [soft music]
Here we are.
Well, I suppose that went as well as can be expected.
Did it?
[scoffs]
Everyone looked so disappointed.
Mm, none more than you.
Was it obvious?
Look, I know today is a sad day, but it’s not all bad news, right?
How do you figure?
Well, the network paid us a small fortune for the rights to the show, right? We made a tidy little profit running that thing.
It was never about the money for me. I wanted something new, rewarding. I feel very, very lucky for the experience.
Well, I loved it too.
We make a damn good team, right?
Yes, we do. And I’m telling you, I’m going to treasure all this time we had with the citizens of Pineview, allowing their adventures to unfold.
Despite all the off-screen drama, you know the good times far outweigh the bad?
They sure do. [chuckles] Like, you know, I can’t believe we actually– we actually made it happen, you know? When we started out, we had no idea what we were doing.
Oh, we had less than no idea. [both chuckle]
You know, and even though this little team is going to break up way before we thought it would, I still think that we, my friend, deserve a toast.
Well, I could not agree more. [both chuckle]
To “Body & Soul.”
Oh. To “Body & Soul.” [glasses clink] Long may she live. [both chuckle]
Mm. [soft music]
Mm.
[chuckles]
Why didn’t I know you had that bottle?
Who says it’s the only bottle? [both chuckle]
Hey, boss. Boss.
Hello, Leo.
Big news, huh?
Yes, indeed. Is there something we could do for you?
Well, first of all, I just wanted to thank you both for taking a chance on me. Writing for “Body & Soul” has truly been an honor and a privilege.
Well, you should be very proud of the work you did.
Thank you. I am. Also, I wanted to know if you had the contact information of the network brass. I wanted to ask them if they had any thoughts on the direction of the show, see if there was anything I needed to change about the writing.
Leo–
Oh, and just so you know, I’m not talking about moving to Los Angeles. I mean, not that I wouldn’t mind skipping out on these frigid winters, but Salem is home. My boyfriend is here. My best friend is here. My whole life is here.
[sighs] Leo–
And I can write from here. I don’t need to be on set. I’d just fly to LA for meetings or whatever.
OK, Leo, that’s not gonna happen.
Why not? Why can’t I write remotely?
[sighs] Because they don’t want you to write at all. [dramatic music]
Excuse me?
Leo, I’m sorry to have to tell you this, but… they’re bringing in another head writer.
Wow. So you’re all in, huh? LA, here you come?
Hey, no-brainer for me.
[chuckles]
I am Charlemagne. What about you?
I have to think about it. And I have to talk to Justin, of course. And if he couldn’t move there, well, I guess I’d have to, what, commute? I mean, come back here when I wasn’t working?
You know what? I bet they’d fly you. I bet they’d fly you first class.
[chuckles] Well, I don’t know about that. And besides, I’m in no shape at the moment to make any life-changing decisions, if you know what I mean.
Yeah, I feel you.
The good news is, Kayla said as far as she’s concerned, the part is still mine, though.
Oh, hey, that’s lucky.
Yeah, for her. I won’t have to fight her for it.
Yeah. I’ve been in a fight with you. It’s no place you want to be. [laughs]
Well, you’re no pushover, you know, yourself.
Well, thanks, hon.
[sighs]
Actually, I hope you take it.
Yeah?
Yeah. I mean, you know, just the two of us out there in La-La Land. You know, we’d be like– like Laverne and Shirley go to California.
[laughs] You make it sound pretty fun.
It does sound fun, doesn’t it?
Mm-hmm.
You know what I’m gonna do? I’m gonna just make sure that the dressing room next to mine is free, and I’m gonna– I’m gonna keep it warm for you.
[laughs]
You want to move with the show to LA?
Oh, don’t you? I mean, it’s not like you have another job.
No, but I-I got my family here.
But not your whole family, though, right?
No, but my dad, my Aunt Maggie. I got a whole bunch of cousins.
You want to stay for your cousins?
Well–
Philip, Xander.
[sighs] All I’m saying, it’s just a big move is all– for me.
Mm-hmm. Yeah, no, is this– is this really about your family, or is this about Stephanie? [tense music]
[sighs]
Do you really think Alex would go to LA for the gig?
I think that you would know better than I would.
I mean, he loves being on the show, and the fans love him.
But his life is here, and so are you.
Kayla, Stephanie.
Hi.
Sorry to interrupt.
Nope.
Nope, not interrupting. Please, what’s up?
Yeah.
I wanted you to know I just turned in my letter of resignation. I’m leaving for California.
What? I–you’re giving up the hospital to stay with “Body & Soul”?
Well, I’m afraid I have no choice. I never expected to find my passion at this point in life. But Blake Lemoray is in my blood, and if you can’t shake him…
Wow, I didn’t know you were so serious about acting.
Yeah, it’s truly a calling.
Well, good luck in California, then.
Thanks. But if you ask me, you should join me there.
Oh. [chuckles]
[chuckles]
Oh, I appreciate that, but no, my work is here at the hospital.
I’m not sure that’s gonna be for much longer.
Excuse me?
I’m sorry to tell you, but… the hospital is about to declare bankruptcy.
Oh.
