THIS STILL NEEDS EXTENSIVE EDITING!

You let Jada think that I dumped her at the altar?

I thought you’d approve, given the alternative that Feniger and Jada would be in the honeymoon suite with Barry White on the stereo. [chuckles] Come on, Rafe. I did you a favor. A little gratitude would be nice.

Gratitude? Gratitude. I’m being held hostage, and Jada’s heart is broken.

In the long run, I’m sure she will see that I did her a favor.

Favor how? Favor what? By having her pushed out, replaced by that son of a bitch Feniger all so you could be reappointed as DA? Is she gonna see that as a favor, too?

[sigh] I am consistently disappointed by your inability to see the bigger picture.

You know what? Forget it. Forget it, because it’s not gonna work. There’s no way Feniger is smart enough to pull off being police commissioner.

Hmm. Well, you got away with it for long enough. [snicker]

And Jada’s a smart cop. She’s a smart cop, and she’s gonna see through this whole scam and figure out that you are behind the whole damn thing. – I could kill EJ right now.

Jada, listen, I am so sorry that this happened to you, but EJ did say that he had no idea what Rafe was gonna find when he hired him to–

When he hired Rafe to dig up dirt on me, you mean? And lo and behold, dirt was found. And it was completely manufactured. It’s clear that EJ is setting me up. How do you not see that?

Look, I feel you. I do. Do you have proof?

No, not yet. But I will get it. My God, Belle, why are you defending EJ, especially after I advocated for you to become DA?

I’m not defending him, and I know you did.

Belle, I did not come here to debate with you. I just need to know where EJ is. [tense music]

Now you go and have a shower. I’ll have Cook bring us some pastries, and I’ll meet you downstairs.

Sounds like a plan.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Jada, listen, I don’t know where EJ is. I told you I came here to see Johnny. But I can leave a message with the staff if you want.

I’ll convey the message myself. Thank you.

Hey, son. How are you doing? No, no, no. Everything’s fine. I’m just here with Brady, and he’d like to speak to your mom real quick. Can you put her on? What? She’s not there? No, no, no, I’m sure it’s just a misunderstanding or something. Hold on a second. Tripp says–

Yeah, yeah, I heard. If Ava’s is not with Tripp, then where the hell is she?

What do you mean Rachel had help?

There is someone here.

Who? The Parrot Man?

No. She said to call her the Woman in White.

Woman in–what are you talking about?

Kristen, my love? Is that you? [soft dramatic music]

Mother? It can’t be. You–

I’m alive, Kristen. Touch me. Take my hand. It’s really me. Oh, dear God, I’ve missed you so.

Mother.

[soft orchestration] announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “Days of Our Lives.”

Oh, my God, I can’t believe this. I mean, like, I can’t believe that you’re actually here. Oh, Mother, your scars.

Fixed, long time ago.

I don’t have the words. [soft dramatic music]

I hate to interrupt this little reunion, but I–

Then don’t. What brings you here, my darling girl?

I came looking for Ava. And I had no idea that I was gonna find you.

Why are you looking for Ava? Did Rachel tell you she was here?

Uh–Ava was right. You’re the one…? You were here when Brady and I were looking for Rachel, weren’t you?

It was heartbreaking not to reveal myself to you then. But you haven’t told me how you–

Oh, oh.

Came to–

OK, well, oh, God. I found Ava’s phone in Rachel’s backpack. And when I saw the texts that she sent to Brady to make him think that Ava was in China, I started putting things together. We found Rachel here. So I figured that Ava–

Was what? A kidnapping victim? Because I’m sure as hell not on vacation.

Mother.

You know, if you untie me, I will be on my merry way, and the two of you can continue this little mommy-me play date.

Or I could do this.

Come on–ugh.

There. Now we can talk. [chuckles]

Can I talk to him?

Sure. Hey, son. Here’s Brady.

Hey, Tripp. Listen, have you even spoken to your mother in the last week or so? Not once? Yeah. Yeah, well, she texted me and told me she was coming to visit you, so I just assumed–

Hey, give me the phone back.

OK, hold on one second.

Please, please. Son, listen to me. I’m sure everything is fine. I bet your mom just had a last-minute change of plans, OK? Now–look, yes, and I’m gonna get to the bottom of this, I promise you. And I’ll call you as soon as I hear anything. You do the same, OK? In the meantime, try not to worry. I got this. OK. I love you too, buddy.

Steve, I know you don’t want your son to worry, but I don’t think everything’s fine. And I’ll bet you don’t either.

Something’s not right here.

What do you mean?

Isn’t that the passageway that leads to the tunnels under the house? Why is it ajar?

Oh, no, They’re doing construction down there. I guess something got damaged when Connie Vininski was holding Gabi and Melinda. So I’m sure a construction worker just left it open.

Or maybe EJ is avoiding me because he knows I’m on to him.

Wait, what? No, Jada, I’m sure he’s not– I know he’s not down there.

Your faith in Jada is touching, but she is neither smart nor a cop at this particular juncture.

You smug son of a bitch.

Look, if you’re not going to eat your breakfast, I’m going to just have to gag you again.

Screw you. Screw you and your lousy food.

Fine. You can have it for lunch. I’m sure it will be way more appetizing then.

Someone’s gonna find me down here, you know. It’s only a matter of time before you get caught.

Mm. [tense music]

Jada.

Here you are. I knew I was right.

That would be a first. What are you doing down here?

Looking for you.

Fine, you found me. Now tell me why.

You know why. I know exactly what you’re up to, EJ. [soft dramatic music]

Can I see that text Ava sent you?

Sure.

“Sorry I haven’t returned your calls. “I just landed in Hong Kong. “I hope you got my voicemail last night. “The reception wasn’t so great at the airport. “In case it didn’t go through, “Tripp called and invited me to visit him and Wendy. “I decided to take him up on the offer “because I’ve missed my son terribly, “but also because I thought if I left town, “maybe Rachel would return home. “Despite what you’ve said, I believe I’m coming “between you and your daughter. “Therefore, I think it’s best if I stay here for a while. I hope you understand.”

I don’t think you have to read between the lines to get what that’s all about.

Well, she was obviously trying to put some distance between you two. But maybe she was trying to spare your feelings–

Yeah, ’cause breaking up with me via text, that didn’t hurt my feelings at all?

No, I’m just saying it’s possible she went somewhere else. Hong Kong was a cover.

Anything’s possible. But, Steve, if she did go someplace else, then where?

Where were we, sweetheart?

I was gonna ask you, um, what happened? I mean, how is it that you’re alive?

I wish I could tell you. I don’t even know myself. After I was left for dead, I spent years recuperating in a French sanitarium and then more years still trying to piece together who I was and how I got there. I mean, Stefano, of course, survived, went on to his old life again.

He’s gone now. But–you have heard, I’m sure.

The Phoenix is dead? I don’t believe it.

Mother, you– you really don’t know?

Oh, no, I’m cut off from the rest of the world here in Aremid. Well, at least I was.

Wha–why did you make that choice? I mean, you know, you could have reached out to me and Peter– just let us know that you were alive.

I was afraid that I’d be just trouble.

Oh, Mother, you could never be trouble. I mean, I’m just so happy to see you. I mean, look at this. This is a miracle. [laughter]

Not as happy as I am to see you. When little Rachel showed up on my doorstep, she just showed up there, and I realized that fate was telling me that it was time to reveal myself and do whatever it takes to help my family.

I’m glad– I’m glad Johnny’s doing better. You tell him take it easy. I’ll check in later. Yeah. Love you, baby. Detective Brady, thank you for the transcript of your interview with Jada Hunter.

Is that what we’re calling her now? No more–no more “Commissioner?”

Look, I know that you’re close to her, Detective Brady. After all, you were partners. But I’m hoping that you can put aside personal feelings. I’m counting on you to help ease the transition.

What transition?

I’ve put an interim commissioner in the job– Rafe Hernandez. [tense music]

What exactly do you think I’m up to?

I know you’re setting me up to look like a crooked cop because I got you fired. And nothing gets your adrenaline flowing more than revenge.

[grunting] [cries out]

What was that noise?

You appointed Rafe as commish? I mean, talk about a slap in the face to Jada.

It wasn’t intended as such.

Look, when I interviewed her yesterday, she was genuinely shocked at this so-called evidence. And for the record, I believe that she’s 100% innocent.

And I truly hope you are right.

Did Rafe say who at the PD leaked this information to him?

No. He wouldn’t reveal his sources. But if Jada’s own fiancée believes that she’s a dirty cop, then I have to take these allegations seriously. I have to believe that they’re credible.

Yeah, well, I don’t. And I never will.

Noise? I didn’t– I didn’t hear any noise. [muffled cry]

There it is again.

Oh, um, of course. We have workers down here doing repairs– hammering, drilling, you name it, morning, noon, and night. I’ve learned to tune it out. I wish I had that option with you.

God, you are insufferable.

Mm, one woman’s opinion, but not shared by all, I’m happy to say. But we should go. It’s too dangerous for you down here. You can insult me to your heart’s content upstairs. Come on. Let’s go.

You’re down here.

Well, I was just supervising. I just took off my hard hat. Shall we go?

Don’t touch me.

Look, I get why Ava wouldn’t want to get in the middle of my messy family situation. But to come up with this story about her leaving town?

Well, maybe she didn’t want you to follow her.

Steve, we haven’t even been seeing each other that long. It doesn’t make any sense why she would go to this trouble to just cut ties with me.

Or maybe she had every intention of going to China, but she never made it there.

Without telling Tripp that she was coming?

Or maybe she sent that text under duress. Or…

Or she wasn’t the one that sent the text at all.

Our little girl looks so much like you when you were her age. My heart melted when I saw her. And when she said her name was Rachel– [laughter]

I always knew if I had a daughter that I was gonna name her after you.

You made the happy family that you always wanted.

We are a happy family. I mean, at least we were.

Until she ruined it all.

Is that what Rachel told you?

More or less. I obviously took her feelings very seriously. And I thought it was a chance for me to make it up to you and Peter for all the years I missed.

Mom, you don’t owe me anything. None of that was your fault. You, hey, you suffered terribly. I’m really happy that you’re here, but–

But what, darling?

I–I can’t be party to what you’re doing to Ava.

What do you mean?

Mama, you have to let her go. [tense music]

Jada was my partner. She’s the best cop that I’ve ever worked with. She’s–she’s honorable. She’s kind.

You didn’t always think this way.

Yeah, because I was drinking then. But I’m not now. So I see things much more clearly.

Look, Jada is innocent until proven guilty. And I hope to hell that her name is cleared. But until we finish investigating, we cannot let the people of Salem lose confidence in our police department. Now, if Jada is ultimately cleared, the job is hers again.

Good. Good. I’m glad to hear you say that. But answer me this. Why did you have to give it to Rafe in the interim?

You think it should have gone to you?

No, no, I don’t think that at all. I just–you just recently fired him.

I was impressed with Jada’s improved case clearance rate, but now that that’s been called into question–look, Rafe has done the job before. He’s respected in the community. But now is not the time to put in someone with no administrative experience in the job. Now, Rafe, he’s the calm, steady hand. That’s the wheel that the people of Salem, they need right now.

Is he, though?

What do you have against Rafe?

Look, I just– I just don’t like the fact that right after you let him go, he went and he took a job working for EJ, and– and he broke Jada’s heart.

Well, you don’t have to like it, Detective, or any part of it. My decision stands. Now, I expect you to get on board with the new normal around here, and you rally the troops that work for you. That’s an order.

Yes, ma’am.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go and break this news to Jada.

Look, Madam Mayor–

Yes?

Look, if you don’t mind, I’d like to be the one to tell her.

Jada, I’m going to level with you here. I asked Rafe to investigate because I was suspicious of the Keystone Kops’ astoundingly improved competence after you were put in charge.

Could it be that I was good at my job?

So was Rafe, supposedly. But your numbers were an outlier. And it’s not like I knew what Rafe would find. But what he did find is that you put people away on trumped-up charges, and for that, you’re just going to have to be punished.

I don’t believe anything out of your lying mouth.

Well, it’s enough that a lot of other people believe it, including your former fiancé. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I haven’t finished my breakfast.

Oh, there you are.

Ex-Commissioner Hunter was just leaving. Goodbye. Don’t come back.

I promise, when I do, I’ll remember to bring the handcuffs.

Except they took those away from you, didn’t they, along with your gun and badge?

EJ.

What?

Did she find you downstairs?

She did. I just went down to check on the construction.

Huh. Yeah. I’ve wondered where you went. By the way, Jada does not know about us. I told her I was here visiting Johnny.

Good. Good.

She was hopping mad when she got here, though.

And she was like that when she left, as you could see.

So, EJ, she said that you actually manufactured the evidence that Rafe found against her.

I’m well aware of what she believes.

Well, did you?

You think it’s possible that someone used Ava’s phone to text me?

Look, man, we both know about Ava’s checkered past. She’s been involved with the mob, with Clyde Weston’s people.

Yeah, but she cut ties with all those people.

You can never completely cut ties with people like that. And if one of them wanted her to disappear with Tripp away, the only person they’d have to cover their tracks with is you. When was the last time you spoke to her?

I don’t– I mean, like I said, she hasn’t been responding to my messages at all.

Did you have a fight or something?

No. No, the last time we spoke, Rachel was still missing, and Ava was very supportive of the whole thing, and a little while later, I get this voicemail from her, but the last part of it was just garbled. It was like she lost reception or something.

And that was the last time you heard her voice?

Yeah.

Can you play that voicemail for me?

Sure. – Brady, it’s Ava. You need to call me back as soon as you get this. [static buzzing, line crackling] But, look, technically, the text she sent me kind of fills in the blanks on that– that garbled part, right?

What if she didn’t send it?

Then it’s possible that that’s not what she said at all.

You want to let Ava go free?

Mother, you can’t keep her hostage.

Why not?

Why not? You’re the one who always taught me to do the right thing. Not that it completely took, but still.

But I also taught you that nothing is more important than fighting for love for family. Remember?

Yes, yes, and that part definitely took.

Because Rachel is such a bright, spirited girl. But I take it from what she said. She’s–she’s been through a lot.

She has, Mother.

And you’ve been through a lot, too, Kristen. If your father and I hadn’t been taken from you, things would be very different.

I suppose they would be.

Don’t you think that that girl deserves the family you never had? Do you want her to be a mother to Rachel? Because Rachel certainly doesn’t want that.

I doubt that relationship would even get that far, given Brady’s track record. I am not worried about Ava. And you shouldn’t be either, Mother.

But I am. Kristen, if you free Ava, she will go to the cops. And if she turns me in, so be it. But your darling girl told me that you were going to put her in therapy for sending threatening texts to Ava. I mean, what would they do? What would happen if the authorities found out she was– she was somehow all mixed up in a kidnapping plot? They’d take her away from you, I’m telling you. They might even put her away.

But you can’t keep her here forever.

No, I know. You’re right. But at least I can take care of her for the time being.

And then what happens next?

Well, then we can come up with a more permanent solution. [dramatic music]

God, I got a lot of questions still, Steve, even fewer answers than I started with.

Yeah. Listen, I know some of the people Ava was involved with in the past. I’ll work those contacts.

Thank you. Thank you. And listen, I don’t mean to lean into you too hard here, but is there one other thing you could do for me?

Name it.

Could you try to enhance the audio on Ava’s message? Then maybe we could figure out what she was trying to say before the reception went bad.

Yeah, send me the voicemail. I’ll see what I can do.

Great. You think she might be in real trouble, don’t you?

Unfortunately, I do. [tense music]

A more permanent solution? What does that mean, Mother?

I’ll figure it out. I can be very creative.

Ugh. You’re not gonna harm her.

Oh, pfft, no, not me, villain though she may be.

OK, Mother, she used to be my friend.

Used to be?

Yes, I mean, we had a falling out, and I do still have some empathy for her.

I understand. But, Kristen, listen. If there’s one thing that Stefano gave you, it’s the DiMera spine. You have to do this to protect Rachel. You must. You’re a mother like me. And that commitment, that sacred commitment, means that you have no choice.

I’m sorry, Ava. But she’s right. I have to protect Rachel.

There. I told you, my darling daughter. Mother always knows best.

Belle, the one who dug up the evidence against Jada was Rafe. He verified it himself. And do you seriously believe I would have Jada ousted merely because she had me replaced with you?

All right. I, uh, just hope you’re telling me the truth.

I just hope that you could stay a little longer, maybe have some lunch, and then afterwards, we can have a bit of a siesta?

Mm, I can’t. I have to go to work.

Oh, stinging words for a man who could spend the entire day in his robe. How about a rain check?

Sure.

And, uh, for the record, I’m glad you stayed over last night.

Well, for the record, me too. [soft music] [smooch]

Oh, this is all getting too close for comfort. [tense music]

Hey.

Shawn.

Look, I know I probably should have called first. But I saw your car out front, and I just wanted to stop by and see how you’re doing. Can I come in?

Sure.

Peace offering. I’m, uh, really sorry I had to drag you down to the station and grill you like that.

I understand that you were just doing your job. I’m grateful it was you.

Well, I’m glad you’re here. I, uh, wasn’t sure.

Well, join the club. I’m not sure about anything anymore. Rafe is still at the Salem Inn, and when he comes home, I guess I’ll be moving out.

Look, I’m sorry. If there’s anything I can do to help, I… Jada, speaking of Rafe, I, um– I have some news. And I wanted you to hear from me first.

That was Jada, wasn’t it? She’s here. Jada! Jada!

Save your breath. She’s gone. But I can’t risk someone finding you here. We’ve had far too many close calls.

What the hell is that? What are you doing to me?

[chuckles]

I want an answer by close of business. Belle, I’m glad I ran into you. There’s a situation that I want to discuss with you.

OK.

I’ve installed an interim commissioner in the job, Rafe Hernandez.

Wow. Uh, I assume Jada hasn’t heard the news yet.

Do I have to defend my decision to you, too? It’s only temporary until we see how all this shakes out.

And I assume you’re gonna be conducting an investigation?

Yes, yes, I am. And I do hope that Jada is cleared. But, you know, if it’s warranted, charges will be filed. Now, I’m only telling you this so that you can be prepared in case you have to prosecute her. [tense music]

So Rafe is back at his old job. You know, I shouldn’t be surprised. Things just keep going from bad to worse. You know, just yesterday, I was about to marry the man that I love. And now he won’t even take my calls. He’s taken my job. He doesn’t believe in me. I don’t understand any of it, Shawn. It’s like–it’s like he’s a completely different person. [sighs] What? What are you thinking?

Rafe was in a coma not long ago. Do you think that maybe it’s possible that maybe that might have something to do with the way he’s been acting?

The coma? It’s possible. When he first woke up, the doctors did say that he might experience some personality changes.

I mean, that right there, that might– that would explain a lot.

Yeah, but he was totally fine up until a couple of weeks ago, long after he had got better.

Still, it’s worth checking out, right?

Guess so. And I’m just– I’m just afraid that I already know the answer and that it has nothing to do with the coma. I just think that, uh– I don’t think Rafe loves me the way that I always thought he did, you know? [somber music]

Hey. Uh, you’re back so soon.

Yeah, I brought Rachel back. She’s in the kitchen.

Well, how did the, uh, therapy appointment go?

It went fine.

Fine. Well, you don’t look like it went fine.

The therapist said that she had a good first appointment. Rachel is doing well. I’m just not so sure about Ava.

Ava? Well, what do you mean?

I found out she’s not in Hong Kong with Tripp. [tense music]

Where is she then?

Kristen, I don’t know. But I’m afraid something is very wrong.

I do wish my daughter could have stayed longer. But now I have something to look forward to– her return. And as for you–

[muffled speech]

Oh, now, now, time for our daily constitutional. Let’s get some air.

[grunting] Well, Rafe, welcome to your new abode. [grunting] [sighs] How fortuitous that Kristen told me all about this place the other day– uninhabited and so far off the beaten path that no one’s gonna look for you here.
