THIS STILL NEEDS EXTENSIVE EDITING!

You’re always saying thatyou’re all about family, EJ. So why on Earth would you cut that fake Abigail loose after she spent months deceiving your own brother?

Mayor Price, I had my reasons for cutting Cat Greene loose, as you put it. But I assure you that–

I don’t need your assurances, damn it. My office first thing tomorrow.

So, it sounded like someone got their ass handed to them. Tell me, why did you let that imposter go?

[dramatic music]

So it was Chad that convinced EJ to release Cat Greene? Why would he do that? Well, I’m sure you’ll get to the bottom of it, as you always do. Listen, I am finally done for the night. So I’ll be leaving now. OK.

No, Kayla, you can’t leave. Not until you’ve helped Sarah walk again.

If you want a drink, you better order now because it’s just about last call.

Don’t–don’t worry. I’m not ordering a drink, so…

Brady, nice to see you.

You too. I was hoping you were working late.

Oh, well, as always. So what brings you by?

Just wanted to shoot the breeze, actually, if that’s OK. I mean, look, if it’s a bad time–

Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, it isn’t, it isn’t. I’m ready to take a little bit of a break from these books. Go on, sit. So, you know, the last time we shot the breeze, it was about your son and my employee, if I recall, so what do you want to do? You want to just pick up where we left off?

No, we don’t have to pick up there. That’s fine. Honestly, I don’t want to– I don’t to violate Tate’s privacy.

Oh, come on, Brady. You know you can trust me. And, look, I know that you were concerned about Tate. I’m concerned about Sophia. So I know that I can trust you not to tell Tate or Sophia what I’m about to divulge to you. No, uh-uh. You know, never mind, never mind.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Well, that was getting good. You said you were going to divulge something.

Mm-mm. No, no, I’m not going to do it. No, no, because Sophia trusted me. And just like you don’t want to betray Tate’s trust, I don’t want to betray hers. So, no, I’m– I’m not betraying–

Actually–Ava, Ava, Ava. Actually, I think I’m already privy to the confidence that you’re reluctant to betray.

Oh. So you know?

Yeah, I’m all caught up. Happened underneath my own roof. So I’m fully aware that Tate and Sophia have taken their relationship to the next level.

[laughs] OK.

Tate, I’m so into you. More than you know.

And I’m into you.

Holly, this is–

What did you just call me? – You slept with Sophia? I think I’m going to be sick.

Holly, just listen. I–I want to be with you, but I can’t just be with you, if that makes any sense.

No, that doesn’t make sense. I don’t get why you can’t just be with me, Tate.

Because–

I might actually throw up.

No, because– because I feel like I have to give Sophia a chance. You know, she’s been there for me. And we’ve gotten close. So I–I don’t know, I feel like I have to at least see where our relationship could go.

Your “relationship”?

I’m sorry. I really–I wish things could have gone differently. I do. But you were gone. You were in Paris. And– Holly, I am so sorry. I really am. More sorry than you’ll ever know.

What do you mean? I didn’t call you anything. Maybe I said your name?

No, you didn’t say my name. You said Holly’s.

[soft orchestration] announcer: Like sandsthrough the hourglass, so arethe “Days of Our Lives.”

It’s quite the classy euphemism.

[laughs] “They took their relationship to the next level.”

OK, well, classy euphemism aside, I don’t even know how comfortable I am talking to you about this whole thing.

OK. All right, all right, all right, all right. So, listen, I will just then conclude our conversation by saying that I hope things work out between Tate and Sophia because she is clearly smitten with your son.

Yeah, so it seems.

And I hope that he is equally as smitten with her. What, no comment?

[stammers] Hey, I thought we were going to conclude this conversation?

OK, yeah, we are. We are, we are. OK, so just– just one more thing, OK?

Ava– -Just one more thing, all right? Just one more thing.

OK, one more.

So as Sophia’s sort of surrogate mother, I just– it is my fervent hope that your son is over Holly Jonas. Wow, you are a tough nut to crack.

You know what I would love? I would love some club soda.

Club soda?

Yeah.

Yeah. Coming right up. Hmm.

[sighs]

Sophia, I–I swear I really don’t remember calling you “Holly.”

So now you’re going to gaslight me?

No, no, no.

Well, even though you claim not to remember what you said, I know what I heard. It was your ex-girlfriend’s name, meaning that although you’re here in bed with me, you’re thinking about her.

Oh, hi, sweetheart. I didn’t know you were home.

I just came in.

I’m glad you’re here because I’ve got some wonderful news. Kristen agreed to give Sarah the serum.

So combining these two result in a serum that could cure your paralysis?

That’s what we’ve been told. But I have no idea the dosage or how it’s supposed to be administered.

That’s why we’re here. Kayla, Sarah trusts you to be the one to figure out how to get her out of this wheelchair and hopefully walking.

I guess if you heard me say Holly, I must have said Holly.

Wow. It’s really big of you to admit that you just said another girl’s name while you were in bed with me.

I feel awful that I did that. I’m so embarrassed. I–it’s just–

It’s just what?

When Holly and I broke up, she took it really hard. And so, yes, I’ve been thinking about her. But it has nothing to do with how I feel about you. Look, why don’t we just forget about everyone else and just focus on you and me.

I was focused on you and me. But you were focused on Holly.

Hey, Sophia, I am so sorry. I really–

[scoffs] Yeah, right, but not because you care about me. Only because you were dying to have sex tonight, imagining yourself with Holly.

No, that is not true.

Oh, come on, Tate. Why don’t you just admit to me and to yourself that when Holly asked you if you wanted to get back together, you wish you had said yes?

Club soda with lime.

Thank you.

Mm.

Are you sure you don’t have to work?

No, no, no. I’m going to finish up these books in the morning.

All right, good, because then I do have something to share with you.

Yeah?

And it has nothing to do with breaking anyone’s trust or anyone’s privacy. It’s just damn good news.

Oh, yeah, I could use some damn good news.

All right, well, do you recall me telling you that Kristen was going to do something huge for Sarah?

Oh, yeah, I remember that well, especially since I was surprised that Kristen was going to do anything huge for anyone– well, unless it was horrible and destructive, which it clearly wasn’t since you were so upbeat when you told me about it.

Yeah, and I’m even more upbeat than I was before because it appears that Kristen is actually going to go through with this. Ava, there’s a– there’s a serum that could potentially heal Sarah’s paralysis.

Wow.

Yeah.

Really?

Really. Really. It’s amazing. And I can’t elaborate on it too much. But I’m just hoping and praying that Sarah’s going to be able to walk very soon.

Wow. Look, that is– that is amazing. It is. But I just– I just don’t–I don’t see Kristen doing something like this without strings attached.

Actually, there– there are strings attached.

Yes. Which are?

When she agreed to hand over the serum to help Sarah, I didn’t know that she had asked for something in return.

Which was what?

Titan.

What? Titan?

Yeah, Titan. Yeah, she demanded that Xander give her control of his father’s company.

OK, well, that is more like the cold-hearted Kristen we all know and love. So, did Xander make that deal?

Well, it turns out that Xander didn’t have to because Kristen changed her mind about demanding Titan for the serum.

Really?

Mm-hmm.

Why would she do that?

Because I asked her to.

Rest assured, I have the whole Cat Greene situation well in hand.

Hmm. I sure hope so. For the life of me, I don’t understand how anyone believed that card-carrying phony was Abigail. I knew she was an imposter the first minute she set foot in this house.

Oh, well, aren’t you the bloody detective? You know, I just saw an ad in “The Spectator.” The Salem PD is looking for new recruits. You should apply.

[laughs] Yeah, I’m very happy in my current position. Thank you.

A position you may not hold for long, so I hear. Oh, that’s right. I still have my connection to the board. And they were more than happy to share their account of how you botched the Titan takeover. So give me the lowdown, sis. How did you screw this one up?

Wait, I thought Kristen was only willing to give Aunt Sarah the serum if Xander gave her Titan?

Well, that was the original deal, yes. But I’m happy to report that Titan is still in Xander’s control. And that’s because Brady somehow managed to convince Kristen to have a change of heart.

Wow. Kristen DiMera has a heart?

I didn’t think so.

[laughter] But at least this time, in this instance, I don’t know, she listened to her better angels and she gave Xander the serum.

Wow, that’s amazing. Has Aunt Sarah taken it yet?

Not yet. She and Xander are at the hospital. They’re talking to Kayla about how to administer the serum. – So you said it was Rolfwho developed the serum?

Yeah. And apparently, that one is the active ingredient, the one that Brady gave me. And the other one is useless without it.

At least that’s what Kristen told us.

So we’re left to trust Kristen and Rolf, just flying blind?

Well, not–not exactly. I mean, Rolf left these instructions. So I’m just hoping with these notes, you and I can figure out what to do next.

Oh, I didn’t botch up anything, EJ. No, at the th hour, there was an unexpected complication.

Which was?

Oh, which was Philip Kiriakis showed up, threatened to tie up the deal for Titan in the courts. So I decided it wasn’t worth the trouble. I simply chose to give Sarah the serum, no strings attached.

But why would you do that? I mean, even if Xander couldn’t deliver his father’s company, he would have paid through the nose for a chance to see his wife walk again. Why would you just give away your advantage?

I did it for love.

[sighs]

Wait, so–so Kristen gave Sarah and Xander the serum because you told her to? What, your wish is her command?

Stop, no. Not–I mean, not– not usually, God knows not usually.

OK. So what’s the catch? What’s the catch, Brady?

All right, here’s the catch, Ava. I told her that if she forces Xander to give the company to her in exchange for the serum, that she could kiss any chance that we had of ever getting back together goodbye.

[laughs]

I said it.

Yes, you did. OK, so that is why she was so noble. Kristen only did the right thing because she is still crazy about you. And you– wow, you gave her a hope that the two of you might get back together if she gave that serum over. Nice.

It’s a little manipulative, isn’t it?

Yeah.

Yeah, but– but very effective, it seems.

Mm-hm. Yeah. Yeah, but I just wonder.

You wonder what?

Well, was it a total manipulation? Or is there a chance for the two of you? Come on, Brady. Look, you two, you have a daughter together. So is there any chance of you and Kristen actually getting back together?

Well, from what I see from these notes, it looks like Rolf intended this to be a % solution. But there’s– there’s nothing here about diluting it with saline.

Do you think that it can be administered intravenously?

Possibly, but I’m not clear on the titration rate.

Yeah, some of us in the room didn’t go to medical school. Would you mind catching me up? Does any of this mean that you know how to use this stuff?

So, um, Kayla and I think that the cure can be given through an IV. But that might take several hours.

And that’s a problem because?

Well, um, because the serum has to be injected directly into my spine.

Which carries significant risks. Honestly, I don’t know if I’m comfortable doing it.

Grandma, I’m so happy for Aunt Sarah. I just hope and pray it works for her.

Yeah, so do I. So, tell me, what’s going on in your life?

Yeah, well, with all this great news, it kind of feels weird to talk about myself.

No, it’s not. And as happy as you are about Sarah, I can tell you are a bit down.

Yeah, I am. It’s just been hard, my– my breakup with Tate.

Of course it’s hard. I mean, you cared about him very much.

I do, so much. Grandma, I was–I was naive to think that I could just go through his dad’s room and go through his briefcase to try to find evidence that he was the one who hit Aunt Sarah and then just apologize and everything would be OK between us.

Yeah, but you and Tate, you were very close.

Yeah, we were.

Yeah.

But I also didn’t count on one huge obstacle getting in the way and ruining everything.

And what’s that?

Not what, who. Sophia Choi.

Damn it, Tate, I made it clear that I only wanted to be with you if I was the one you wanted to be with. And you said I was. But obviously, you were lying.

No, I was not lying. I promise. I just–

Just what? You wanted to be honorable by not dumping me immediately after sleeping with me? Well, I’m sorry, but I don’t see the honor in staying with someone when you really want to be with someone else.

I–I– I guess you’re right. There is no honor in that. And I admit that I screwed up here. I was just trying not to hurt anyone, you know? And I really–I want to do the right thing. But I don’t know what the right thing is.

I’ll make it easy for you by asking you one simple question. Who do you want to be with, Tate? Me or Holly?

Look, I know it’s insane to think that Kristen and I could have a future together, especially given our history. The one reason why I don’t rule it out completely– hear me out–is our daughter. And even though it would mean the world for Rachel to have her parents together and have us be a family again, my head tells me to run the other direction and don’t look back.

Well, what does your heart tell you?

My heart–my heart’s with my daughter. I just want her to be happy, Ava. You know, when Kristen and I, when we fight, you should see the look on her face. She hates it.

Of course. So your heart’s with your daughter. And you want her to be happy. So that means you might get back together with her mom.

I’m obviously conflicted about it. You can see. You can see, right?

Ah.

But, hey, Kristen knows. Ava, she knows that it’s highly unlikely that the two of us could ever work it out. I’ve made no promises to her. And what is with the look on your face right now?

Brady, I got to be honest with you. I think you’re being naive.

I am?

Yeah.

Really? Why?

I mean, look, of course, you may think that you made no promises to Kristen. But don’t you think it’s possible she heard what she wanted to hear?

OK, OK, OK. Let me make sure I understand. You gave away that miracle cure because Brady asked you to, despite the fact he promised nothing in return?

Of course, Brady offered something in return. He told me that the only way that he and I could get back together is if I helped Sarah walk again.

OK, maybe this is just the lawyer in me, but I want to be sure I’m clear on the language of this deal, if you can even call it that. Am I correct to assume that Brady offered no guarantees that he would enter into a romantic relationship with you?

And what guarantees should I have asked for, EJ? Should I have had him sign an oath in blood?

In a word, yes.

[scoffs]

Kristen, at the bare minimum, you should have secured a promise of a future with the man. But instead, you let him dangle a carrot before you, and you dropped everything else to chase after it. You failed Negotiating , my dear. You gave away that miracle cure and ended up with nothing.

Why would injecting the serum into Sarah’s spine be risky?

Well, because there’s still swelling around my spine.

And the serum is an unknown quantity. So injecting into the site may cause a reaction that could make the swelling worse.

Worse how?

Sarah’s condition could be irreversible.

I see. But, Kayla, I– I remember you saying immediately after Sarah’s accident that there was a chance that she might recover without treatment. But at this point, it doesn’t seem like that’s going to happen. Could the serum really make her condition any worse?

We just don’t know. I mean, let’s put aside for a second that he is criminally insane. Rolf is a brilliant scientist.

But this is an untested treatment, obviously.

Sarah, you are a doctor. So I don’t have to tell you that there is significant risk here, known and unknown.

You don’t.

Sarah, darling, I’m going to love you and see to it that we live our best lives together, regardless of what you do, whatever you choose. I’m sure you know that.

I do. And I also know that our little girl is going to be taking her first steps any day now. So I am willing to take this chance if it means I can be standing with her, holding her hand.

OK then. So we–we know the risks.

And the possible miraculous rewards. Kayla, will you please give me the serum?

Forget it. You don’t even need to bother with an answer. The look on your face tells me all I need to know. You don’t have the guts to admit it. So just stand there all silent and noble, telling yourself that you did the right thing, and I’ll let you off the hook. You don’t even have to feel guilty about dumping me because I’m dumping you.

Sophia, I– I’m so sorry. I really am. I didn’t intend for any of this to happen. And I just want to say, I think you’re great. I really do like you.

We’re not kids anymore, Tate. Liking me isn’t enough. I don’t sleep with people I like. So do yourself a favor and go be with Holly, the girl you really want to be with. And when she breaks your heart, don’t you dare come crying to me.

So Tate told you that he wanted to be with you?

Yeah. But he also said he didn’t think it was right to break up with Sophia just because I wanted to get back together. Because he wanted to see where things went with them.

Well, I think it’s admirable that Tate wanted to avoid hurting Sophia. I’m just not happy that you got hurt in the process.

[phone beeps] Oh. Oh, my goodness.

What is it?

I’m sorry, sweetheart. I’ve got to get to the hospital.

Oh. OK. Do you want me to come with you?

No, thanks. But I will check in with you later.

OK.

Take care.

You too.

Sophia, hey.

Hey, Ava. I know you’re about to close for the night.

[voice trembling] But I needed to see you. Were you about to go home?

No, no, no, no, no, honey. Come on. I can see you’re upset. Come on. Come on. Sit down. Sit down.

I feel like such a fool.

Honey. Honey, what happened? What is it? Is it Tate?

Yeah. Yeah, it is. He and I are finished.

What–what are you talking about? I thought you guys took your relationship to the next level?

Yeah. Yeah, we did. But then the next time we went back to that level, he called me Holly in the middle of it.

[footsteps approaching]

Tate, what are you doing here?

Henderson let me in.

So I take it you don’t have plans with Sophia tonight, then?

I did. But Sophia and I aren’t together anymore.

Negotiating . Really? Please, Professor, enlighten me.

Well, it’s all pretty elementary, my dear Kristen. It’s simply a matter of you not giving away your end of the deal and still getting something in return. You clearly want to restart your relationship with Brady. But he has given you no reason to believe that’s ever going to happen.

Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa. That is your cynical, pessimistic take on it. No surprise. But I am damn certain that you will be proven wrong. Hmm. So where has your negotiating skills gotten you, brother, hmm? With Sami? With Nicole? Hm?

Mm. Let’s stay on topic, shall we? We’re talking about you deluding yourself into believing Brady will ever take you back. In fact, now that he has manipulated you into getting what he wants, I’d be shocked if he ever shows his face around here again.

[sighs]

You were saying?

[playful music]

Xander! I just got Sarah’s text. What’s happening?

Kayla agreed to administer Rolf’s serum.

Oh, Xander! That’s wonderful news.

Yes. Sarah knows the risks. And she’s decided that she’s willing to take this chance.

And when will Kayla give her the drug?

Oh, she’s prepping her right now. This is it, Maggie.

[gasps]

Sarah might have come to this hospital in a wheelchair. But if everything goes right, she’ll be walking out of here.

Oh, my God. Oh, my God.

Brady, what a surprise.

[phone ringing]

Oh, I need to take this. Mayor Price, what can I do for you?

Well, I’m really happy to see you.

I can’t stay long.

Oh, OK. Well, I was going to call you, actually. I wanted to tell you that after you delivered the serum to Xander and Sarah, I took them to Rolf’s lab to retrieve the notes and figure out how to administer it.

That is great. That is great. That is great. I got to–I got to say, I’m very impressed with the way in which you’re doing the right thing here. Oh, here.

What is that?

It’s a bracelet.

Is it for me?

No. No, it’s– it’s for Rachel, to give to her. It’s her friendship bracelet, and she left it in back of my car, so…

Oh. Oh, OK. No, no, I will make sure she gets it.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Kristen, um, I think it’s important that you understand something, that although I’m grateful for everything you’re doing with Sarah and the serum, it doesn’t necessarily change things between us. And I–I can’t make any promises, OK?

[laughs] Yeah.

Will you do me a favor and tell Rachel I love her and that I’ll call her to say good night? Thanks.

So? How did it go? Wait, wait, wait, let me guess. Brady came round to tell you that since you’ve so generously given Sarah that serum, you’ve completely redeemed yourself in his eyes and he’s realized that you are the love of his life and he can’t live without you? Yum, yum, yum. Am I right?

And then after he said Holly’s name and I called him on it, he couldn’t really say another word. Like, he couldn’t look me in the eye and tell me that he wanted to be with her and not me. So I ended it between us, and I walked out.

OK. Good for you. Good for you. You got out of there with your dignity.

I’m not sure I did, Ava. I feel so used, so humiliated.

OK. No, no, no, Sophia. Sophia, honey, listen to me. OK, this is Tate. Tate did this. This is on him. He made you think that he was over Holly Jonas, and clearly he wasn’t. Honey, this– this is not about you. This–this is on him. Oh. Oh, honey. How’d you leave it?

Well, I– I told him he should go be with Holly, so– he probably went running back to her as soon as I left.

Oh. Come here, you. Come here, come here, come here, come here, come here, come here. Oh, baby, I’m so sorry. I’m so– oh, I’m so, so, so sorry.

[crying softly]

So you and Sophia, you guys aren’t together anymore?

No, we’re not. Holly, I made a mistake here, a really big one. I should have been more honest with her and myself about what I wanted and what I was feeling. I also made a really, really big mistake with you.

What mistake?

When you came to me and you told me that you wanted to get back together, every single part of me wanted to say yes. But then my head and my heart, they were going in opposite directions, and– very stupidly went with what my head was telling me. And I did what I thought was the right thing to do.

You stayed with Sophia because you guys slept together.

Right.

[sighs] And I– I really feel terrible for hurting her. But I should have known that it wasn’t going to work. Because all I ever wanted was you.

[soft music]

OK. I combined the first part of the serum with the activating agent and tested a small sample in the lab.

And is the composition the same as the formula in Rolf’s notes?

It was an exact match, which means that our calculations were correct.

So far, so good.

Yep. In theory, it should work.

Well, let’s see if it works in practice.

Well, that’s a pretty big needle.

Not going to pass out on us, big guy, are you?

Not a chance.

Listen, we don’t need to do this tonight. I could put this dose in the cryo freeze and– I mean, if you’re having second thoughts.

Whatever you decide to do, darling, I’m here for you.

Let’s do this. Now.
