THIS STILL NEEDS EXTENSIVE EDITING!
Hi, Julie.
Oh, darling, I didn’t hear you come in. What time’d you get here?
Oh, I got back a little while ago. I just–I went straight up to see the kids. I wanted to spend some time with them, kiss them good night.
Good.
Yeah.
They were looking forward to Daddy’s kiss.
[chuckles]
Hmm.
So you took Jack and Jennifer to the airport.
Yeah. They are on their way back to Boston as we speak.
Doug told me about that. He also said this meeting between Jennifer and Abigail didn’t go very well.
Mm. No, it wasn’t a great reunion, to put it mildly.
Awkward. It was awkward.
No, it wasn’t just awkward. It was a complete disaster. Yeah, it went south the second Jennifer saw Abigail’s face and proclaimed, that is not my daughter.
[dramatic music]
Yeah, Jack and Jennifer Deveraux headed back to Boston, so I have one less problem to deal with and two less family members breathing down my neck.
Abigail?
You cannot be serious. A shipment was lost in the warehouse?
[scoffs] I don’t want to hear it. We need those pillow covers for the spring line, so if you can’t send a replacement in the next hours, I will have no choice but to find another supplier. That is not true. I am very loyal.
[scoffs]
I’m just sick and tired of being disappointed by people that I actually thought I could trust.
[sighs]
[groans]
[light music]
Long day, huh?
Hmm. Yeah, you could say that.
Well, you do have a very demanding job now, right? I can imagine working for Kristen DiMera can be pretty stressful, to say the least. I’m sure she’s putting you through the paces.
Not anymore. I got fired.
[suspenseful music]
Hey there. Hope she didn’t give you any trouble while I was out.
[laughs] Of course she didn’t. Stupid question.
No, poor Melinda, she’s never going to give anyone any trouble ever again, is she?
[soft orchestration] announcer: Like sands through the hourglass, so are the “Days of Our Lives.”
Jennifer took one look at Abigail and said, not my daughter?
Which is surprising because Jennifer knew about the DNA test results and never gave any indication that she was in any way skeptical. And I don’t blame Jennifer. I mean, you know, when you– when you–when you see her, when you see Abigail with a new face and so different and she doesn’t have any memory of us at all, I mean, it’s– it’s–it’s confusing and it’s–and it’s– and it’s jarring.
Of course it is, darling.
It’s just– you know, it’s just gonna take time for all of us to process… this woman being Abigail. But it’s undeniable now, right? The DNA test proves it. It’s her.
Proved it, thank God– proved it, so no more uncertainty for us, uncertainty for you, ’cause you were having a terrible time with that. I mean, you had a terrible time.
Yeah, well… I mean, even with the– with the certainty of the test results, it’s gonna take Jennifer some time.
[dramatic music] I don’t know how much, but it’s gonna take her some time to get used to this new version of Abby. So we just thought it was best for she and Jack to go back to Boston.
Right, right.
For Abby’s sake, obviously, too.
Of course it’ll take time. She has to be reintroduced to her old life. And it puts pressure on her to have people standing around watching. So maybe it is right. Fewer people, she’ll have a chance to–
To access her wonderful memories of you and the children and all of us…
The people who love her.
[sighs] OK, we’ve talked about Jennifer. We’ve talked about Abigail. We’ve talked about all the problems they’re gonna be going through right now. And we haven’t said a word about Chad DiMera.
Hmm.
How is this affecting your life? How are you doing?
I have to go. Bye.
It is you, isn’t it, Abigail?
So they tell me.
[both chuckle] And you are?
Your brother-in-law.
Oh, I thought I met my brother-in-law already.
Ah, that must have been Stefan. I’m EJ DiMera.
That’s right. I did hear that Chad had another brother roaming around this house.
Mm-hmm, and that would be me.
Well, nice to meet you.
Same here. And just so you know, I’ve… heard all about you, that you’d returned but with no memory.
Yeah, and a brand-new face…
[both chuckle] Which completely freaked out your brother Stefan.
Ah, and when did you meet him?
This morning. Chad introduced us. It was awkward, to say the least.
Oh, I’m sure it was, for many reasons.
[tense music]
Many reasons?
Well, Chad may be good at hiding it. But he never really got over the fact that you and Stefan slept together.
I’ll expect the tracking number within the hour. Security? I’d like to report an intruder in my office.
Gabi, please.
No, that won’t be necessary after all.
This guy is no threat. I can handle it.
What the hell are you doing here?
I came to see you, obviously.
Well, now you’ve seen me. So if that’s all–
No, that’s not all.
[sighs] We have to talk.
Large plastic trash bags. Check. Rope. Check. Hacksaw, lye, bleach. Check, check, and check.
[chuckles] It’s so convenient the hardware store has everything you need to dispose of a body– one-stop shopping. And these true-crime shows that I watch, they’re practically a step-by-step how-to guide on how to dispose of incriminating evidence.
All right, I better get busy. That body’s not gonna get rid of itself.
[moans]
[gasps] Oh, my God, Li. She’s still alive.
Well… I share your concern for Abigail, Jennifer, Jack, the whole family. But my main concern is you, ’cause you lost your wife in such a… violent way. And then all this time has gone by, and she reappears. And you tell me she doesn’t look the same and has no memory of any of it, of any of us. What are you gonna do? How are you gonna tell Thomas and Charlotte, your mother’s returned, but you won’t recognize her? And worse… Abigail may never get her memory back.
Well, yeah, when you put it like that, it makes you want to crawl in a hole.
No, no, no, no, no. It’s a lot. But you, Chad, have always been able to… throw all these plates in the air, you know, like Cirque du Soleil.
[both chuckle]
[clapping] Seriously, how are you keeping it together?
[dramatic music]
I’m keeping it together.
What other choice do I have?
I have to be strong for my kids… and for Abby. If she sees me uncertain or falling apart, then that’s just gonna make things more difficult. And that’s the last thing I want, so… keep it together.
[clapping] I applaud your strength. I admire your unselfishness. And if you see any of those plates beginning to slip to the floor, you can count on me.
[laughs] Yeah, I will… as the master of the balancing act.
Oh, my God. I’m glad you think so.
[laughs]
[sighs] Chad, I will always be there for you and for your children and now for Abigail.
So I slept with Stefan?
Oh, dear, had no one thought to mention that to you?
No, no one did.
Huh.
You’re telling me I cheated on Chad with his brother?
Well, it’s slightly more complicated than that. Stefan took advantage of a rather unique situation, which is no surprise, since my brother tends to make very, very bad decisions and he’s an idiot. Suffice it to say that everything that happened between you and Stefan was entirely his fault, so…
I take it you and Stefan don’t exactly get along.
Let’s just say that he and his wife are not my favorite people and the feeling is entirely mutual.
We have nothing to talk about.
So that’s it. You just fly off the handle, storm out of the Bistro, and return to work like nothing happened?
Like nothing happened?
[tense music] I stormed out of the Bistro like plenty had happened, like my entire world had imploded, like the man that I was crazy in love with, who I thought loved me back, was actually a lying dirtbag.
[scoffs] And not that it’s any of your business, but I didn’t just go back to work. I went to go visit my comatose brother. And I told him all about how my husband cheated on me while I was behind bars.
[sighs]
Gabi…
[sniffles]
What I did was colossally stupid. It was beyond stupid. It was the biggest mistake of my entire life.
How can we expect to work past it if we can’t even talk about it?
Oh, my God. You actually think we can move past this?
No, think again. There is no moving past this. Your little fling with Ava Vitali will be emblazoned on my brain forever.
This will never be forgotten or forgiven.
[scoffs] Why would Kristen fire you? You just started the job. I can’t imagine you’ve been there long enough to screw up that badly.
I’ll try not to take that as an insult.
OK, that did not come out right. It came out wrong. I am sorry about that.
[chuckles] It’s fine, really. Anyway, it wasn’t something that I did. It was more about the… personalities in the office.
Really?
Yeah.
I thought you and Kristen were friends.
Yeah, so did I. But really, it was more Gabi’s doing. She threatened to pull Gabi Chic from DiMera if Kristen didn’t get rid of me.
Why did Gabi do that? I mean, what, I mean, she just– just didn’t want to work with you or what?
That’s a bit of an understatement.
OK, I see. Does this have something to do with your history with her brother?
Nope. It’s because of my history with her husband. – I think she’s got a pulse, Li.
[suspenseful music] Yeah, she’s breathing too. That makes no sense. I gave her the same dose that I gave Bobby Stein. Or was it Everett Lynch? I think it was Bobby Stein. Whatever. He’s dead, whoever he was. So why didn’t it kill Melinda too?
Maybe she didn’t finish all her tea. Well, that must be it.
Well, I guess it doesn’t really matter.
I’ll have to finish her off.
[suspenseful music]
I can’t exactly give her more tea.
Yeah, it’ll be simpler just to slit her throat. Right, Li?
Don’t do it. Put down the hacksaw, Connie. Don’t kill her.
You know, I don’t doubt that you could juggle quite a few plates, probably a few elephants, and several bicycles as well too.
Sure.
Yeah.
Yeah, ’cause I never told you how I ran away to the circus, how I learned all their tricks, how fantastic I looked in tights.
Oh, I bet you did.
[laughs]
[dramatic music]
I have enormous faith in you. I really do. You’re gonna get through it. We’re all gonna get through it.
What are you thinking?
[sighs] That the thing that scares me the most…
Isn’t, what if she doesn’t get her memory back? It’s, what if she does and she doesn’t feel the same way about me? What if she doesn’t love me anymore, Julie?
Don’t go down that road.
No. You need to borrow some Horton optimism. Abigail will get her memory back. May take a long time, but she will. And when she does, boy, she’s gonna fall in love with you all over again. I’m sure of it.
So because Stefan and his wife– what is her name, Gabi?
Mm-hmm.
Because they kicked you out of your company, you let Gabi go to prison for a crime she didn’t commit?
To be fair, I didn’t know that she was innocent, not at the time. In fact, all the evidence suggested that she was guilty.
Wow, seems to me like you’re the idiot brother.
[chuckles]
Yeah, I suppose I deserve that. But, you know, you didn’t always have such a low opinion of me.
Oh. Oh, no, no, no, wait, wait, wait. Let me guess. Did I sleep with you too?
[both laugh] Oh, my God, I was joking.
Yes, I know… except–
Except it wasn’t a joke.
[light music]
So you slept with Stefan?
I didn’t plan it. Look, he didn’t either. We were wasted. And it’s just–
[sighs] God, we were both going through a tough time, and it–
[groans] It was one– just one moment of weakness.
Just one?
Yes, just one. And it wouldn’t have even been that once, except–
[sighs] Like I said, it was a tough time.
Look, I was under a lot of pressure. Clyde was threatening Tripp. He was having Stefan and I run drugs through the Bistro. I couldn’t tell Harris. And then Harris, he just– he kept finding me and Stefan together, and he started getting suspicious.
Finally, it just seemed like the only choice was…to lie.
So we told Harris that we were dating.
And then you got a little carried away with the deception.
Hmm. Yeah, I guess that’s one way to put it.
Look, I was lonely. I was missing Harris, and Stefan was missing Gabi, and…
The night it happened, I guess the lie we had been telling just became a little too close to the truth.
Oh, but, Roman, Roman, as soon as it was over, we both regretted it, both of us. And we realized it was a huge mistake. And we vowed that we would never do it again. And we agreed. We agreed it would just stay between us. No one else needed to know. In fact, we swore we would take it to our graves.
OK, look, I realize that we may never totally get past this. Yes, I know this is not something that you are going to forget. But all I meant when I said I wanted to talk was that hopefully I can get you to understand that I never stopped loving you, that I never stopped missing you every moment of every day that we were apart.
[dramatic music]
You are the love of my life.
[sighs] And I was in a terrible place when I was unfaithful to you…
Not to mention… completely wasted.
Gabi, you are the one person on this planet that I want to be with. You are the only person I care about in this life.
And I know I hurt you. I know I did. And I would give anything to go back in time and take back that stupid, awful mistake, but I can’t.
I can’t do that.
But I can start now by making it up to you. So, please, come home with me. Please come home, and we can just start to work this out.
All right. I’ll come home.
[sighs]
OK, so if you and Stefan agreed never to tell anybody that this happened, how did Gabi find out?
Her assistant told her– Connie Vininski. She’s a real whack job who worships the ground that Gabi walks on.
OK, well, how did this Connie person hear about it?
[light music]
Well… look, she was eavesdropping on me when I was talking to Kristen about it, OK? And it was a definite blunder on my part. I am aware of that. But it’s not like I expected Gabi’s faithful little lapdog to hear me and then rat me out. You know, like she’s one to judge. The woman’s a total fraud.
How so?
Well, Melinda Trask found out that she lied and invented her entire résumé.
If she could just have found out a few days earlier before this whole debacle.
Well, you know what they say: timing is everything.
Ain’t that the truth?
But maybe the last laugh will be on Connie, because Melinda just went to her apartment to fire her ass.
You don’t want to do this, Connie. You really don’t.
That’s where you’re wrong. And hey, I thought I already did it.
But you didn’t. And I know you. I know you’d like to make amends for what’s already happened. Come on, Connie, do you really want another death on your conscience?
I told you what happened with Bobby wasn’t my fault.
Of course it wasn’t. But this will be. Bobby may be dead, but Rafe is still alive. Not all of your actions are irreversible is what I’m saying. Rafe could still come out of his coma and go on to lead a happy life, and so can Melinda.
Yeah, but she’s gonna expose me. And so I embellished a few tiny details on my résumé. So what? She’s going to make me sound like some kind of low-life criminal. What am I supposed to do then?
[tense music]
Well…
[sighs] You’re gonna have to face the consequences.
I know you don’t want to. No one ever does. But sooner or later, you’re gonna have to own up to what you did. And besides, Melinda hasn’t done anything to you. Not yet, anyway. So why not do the right thing, you know, for yourself and for Melinda?
Come on, you know she doesn’t deserve this.
Why the hell do you care so much about what happens to Melinda?
Oh, my God. Are you in love with her?
There’s no cause for alarm. What happened between you and me was many moons ago. And you weren’t married to Chad at the time.
And you? Were you single?
I was engaged.
Oh, great. So you’re telling me that I was a home-wrecker.
I wouldn’t put it that way. I was the one who cheated on my fiancé. This was entirely on me.
Still, I slept with two of my husband’s brothers. Sounds like I was pretty busy.
[sighs]
Are there any of Chad’s brothers that I didn’t sleep with?
Well, there’s Tony. And I’m quite sure nothing happened between the two of you.
Well, that’s a relief.
[sighs] Are there any other brothers that I should be aware of?
Well, there was Andre, but he’s deceased.
Oh, sorry to hear that. How did he die?
Hey, see you met my brother EJ.
[sighs] I have. And he’s been…very helpful. Learned a lot about myself.
Like what?
Like that I slept with two of your brothers, Stefan and EJ.
[dramatic music]
I’m sorry, Chad. It just–just came up.
You mean that? You’ll come home with me?
I will. Yes.
[sighs]
[sighs] Thank God.
And I’m not making any assumptions, believe me, OK? I’m just grateful that you’re willing to come home with me and talk this out. Maybe… further down the road, maybe you can find it in your heart to forgive me. Right? I mean, just like in the past, when you’ve done things that you regret, things that you’re not proud of, you’re always grateful when people forgive you and when they can look beneath the surface and see that inside there is a beautiful, beautiful human being…
That you’re just a work in progress, that we’re all– all of us are works in progress…
Constantly trying to be the best version of ourselves, trying to learn from our mistakes.
Are you done pontificating?
[tense music]
Pontificating? Gabi, I was just–
Spouting out clichés and boring the hell out of me.
And for the record, I have no intention of putting this behind me.
But I thought you said you were coming home with me.
Oh, Stefan, do you not know me at all?
Yes, I will come home…
To pack.
What did you say to her?
Nothing important, just that apparently I’m the family slut.
[clears throat]
Now, if you two will excuse me, I think I’m gonna go throw up.
[dramatic music]
What’d you tell her? What’d you tell her? Are you stupid?
I’m sorry, truly. But how was I supposed to know that you hadn’t given Abigail a primer about her life?
We thought she was dead for two years, and then I bring her back, and you decide to tell my traumatized wife about her past sexual experiences the first time you meet her?
Well, maybe the timing wasn’t perfect. But come on, it was bound to come out eventually.
So this incident with Stefan, is that the reason you and Harris broke up? You know what? Never mind. That is none of my business.
It’s fine. Really, it is.
[light music] It’s kind of–kind of good to talk about it, you know? Honestly, Harris was willing to give me the benefit of the doubt.
But truthfully, there were so many terrible things I did while we were together that this was basically just a drop in the bucket.
And if you’d like to say, “I knew it,” now would be a great time. Go right ahead.
Not gonna say that, Ava. In fact, I’m– I very much appreciate you being this open with me about this.
That’s because I trust you, Roman. I mean, who doesn’t? You are obviously a stand-up guy. And you’ve got a very good heart.
Yeah, maybe it’d be more of your sister Kayla’s reaction…
[laughs] You know, “Yeah, I knew it,” since basically everything I told you is confirming everything she already believes about me.
So that’s why you’re so concerned about what happens to Melinda. You never got over her after you two broke up.
That’s not true, Connie. I don’t care about Melinda.
[suspenseful music] I care about you. I know you’re a person that’s capable of kindness and deep compassion.
I am. And bless your kind heart for acknowledging that. But, Li, if I don’t kill the woman, what am I supposed to do with her? I can’t let her go. She knows too much. I practically told her all my plans before she passed out. She’ll tell the cops. Worse, she’ll tell Gabi.
[fingers snap]
I have an idea.
[sighs]
[groans]
[door slams]
Gabi, Gabi, please. Gabi, please, will you just listen to me?
Take your hands off me!
Ooh-hoo-hoo, should I assume that there’s trouble in paradise?
Oh, you bet there is. Your brother slept with Ava Vitali while I was in prison.
[gasps] Oh, my.
I told you a million times it meant nothing.
Well, it means something to me, you jackass.
Gabi, please, can we just sit down and talk this through?
Oh, I am not sitting down. I am not spending one more minute in this house than I absolutely have to. I am packing my stuff, and I am leaving.
[tense music]
[dramatic music]
[knock at door]
Come in.
Hey.
Hi.
You OK?
[sighs] I think so. It’s just a lot to process, hearing all those terrible things about yourself.
Well, for the record and if it’s any consolation, most of the stuff about you isn’t very terrible. Most of it’s… pretty–pretty wonderful.
Really?
[scoffs] Even after I slept with two of your brothers?
Well, no. Yes, it’s–it’s water under the bridge. You know, you don’t– you don’t– you don’t have to stay in this room. The guest room is made up.
Oh… I decided I want to stay in this room– if that’s OK, of course.
Yeah, sure, if that’s what you–if that’s what you want.
I do. You said this was our room. So I was thinking…
Perhaps it will help bring back my memories, especially the ones of us. Then I can maybe start to be the Abigail that you remember.
OK, I obviously can’t speak for Kayla.
Mm.
And I suppose she has her own reasons for feeling the way she does about you. But I, on the other hand, am more about forgiveness. We all make mistakes. And God knows I sure as hell have made more than my share.
Hmm. Well, I appreciate that, Roman, more than you know.
[light music] But I’m afraid that Gabi doesn’t feel the same way.
Oof, I am so, so sorry to hear that your husband cheated on you, but it couldn’t have happened to a nicer person.
EJ, shut the hell up.
And please make sure that you’ve gathered all of your things before you leave, because as soon as you do, I’ll be asking Harold to change the locks.
Get lost, damn it!
I’m just making sure that we have some home safety measures. We don’t want the gold diggers and the ex-cons coming in. Understand?
EJ, get the hell out of here.
I will not get the hell out of here. I am staying right here.
It’s Gabi who’s getting the hell out of here.
On second thought, you know what? I’m not going anywhere. I’m staying right here.
[sighs]
[suspenseful music]
[groans] What the–
[gasps]
Don’t worry, Melinda. I’m going to take good care of you. Li and I both are.
