THIS STILL NEEDS EXTENSIVE EDITING!

Stephanie, hi. I thought you were moving outta here months ago.

I-I was. But after Chad left, I decided to move back into our old apartment.

Oh.

So what are you doing here?

I’m moving back in here too.

Gabi, didn’t think you’d be back so soo–

[ominous music]

I’m trying, big brother. I’m really, really trying to stick to the tender loving care routine… to sit here and give you nothing but sisterly love and support. But you’re still not waking up. And I’m starting to get really frustrated. So I may have to move on to tough love. And you’re not gonna like that, because– because–

‘Cause she’s the toughest person I know.

[gentle music]

Burning the midnight oil?

Oh, hey. Oh, gosh, I didn’t even realize what time it was.

Mm, it looks like you’ve gotten settled into the position, Madame Commissioner.

Well, this is still Rafe’s job when he comes back.

Huh.

But I am doing my best.

Your message said there have been some new developments with Rafe’s stabbing?

Yes.

But no change in his condition?

No.

Oh. Well, can I assume that the break in the case has something to do with the suspect you told me about?

Only he’s no longer a suspect. And it has been confirmed that Everett Lynch is the one who attacked Rafe.

[door clicks open]

* Honey, I’m home * And I brought us a nice bottle of wine to share. After a long day in the DiMera salt mines, I have definitely earned this.

You’re in a good mood.

Why wouldn’t I be? They’ve identified Commissioner Hernandez’s attacker. I’ve got a good job. I’ve got you. Everything’s coming up Connie!

Good first day at DiMera, huh?

Better than good, sublime. [laughs]

Care to share?

I have to admit, I had some first day jitter.

Mm, mm-hmm.

Mm-hmm. I sometimes have difficulty fitting in with new people. I feel like I really hit it off with my coworkers. And Ava and Kristen are just fantastic bosses.

Mm, yeah. And, um, Gabi?

Gabi trusts me already. You should see how impressed she was that I showed up at the Bistro with some papers for her to sign.

Hmm. [laughs] Good for you, I guess.

And I can’t believe how much information I learned today, so much valuable information I can’t wait to use later. And I can’t believe how much more comfortable I feel right now than I did this morning.

Mm, comfortable about DiMera business or about murdering Everett Lynch?

[dark music]

Your ex-husband is the one who attacked Rafe?

He was Bobby Stein when we were married. So we think that Bobby was the one who attacked Rafe.

Oh, J-Jada, I don’t know what to say.

I didn’t want to believe it either. It wasn’t until Stephanie and I started talking. And we put the pieces together. And we realized that he might have been faking his integration.

You mean faking that he was back to being Everett.

Yeah.

Oh.

And Bobby had a very clear motive for wanting Rafe out of the picture.

Because he wanted you back.

Yeah.

And I brought him in for questioning, just like you suggested, but then when he got here, he started saying that he wasn’t feeling well. And then he–he left. I had to let him go.

You let him go?

I didn’t have enough evidence to hold him. And Stephanie decided to take matters into her own hands. And so she went to Everett’s hotel. And so I followed her there. And when we got there, we found him lying there next to a bottle of pills. He’d overdosed.

Overdosed? Is he–

He’s dead.

Oh. Oh. Oh, Lord. Jada, I’m so, so, so sorry. [Jada sniffles]

But you’re sure he’s the one who attacked Rafe?

Yeah. Yeah, there was a suicide note. And it confessed to everything. And there was… Were these.

[unsettling music]

Johnny, this is a surprise.

Yeah, just I’ve been thinking nonstop about Rafe. And just wanted to come in, check in, see how he’s doing, see how you’re doing.

Thanks. I know it would mean a lot to him that you came to see him.

[sighs] So what are the doctors saying?

Not much. They just don’t know.

Oh, that’s the worst. [monitor beeping steadily] So how are you doing?

Hanging in the best I can, I guess.

Yeah. No, I remember when my dad was in a coma. Just that–that feeling that at any moment you’re just expecting him to–to wake up. You know?

Only he never does.

I’m sorry.

[gentle music]

I just hate seeing him like this.

Yeah, me too. When I was a kid, Rafe was basically a superhero. And he was larger than life. He’d come home and he’d– he’d talk about all the bad guys that he’d caught. I felt safe because he was out there saving the world. I just couldn’t believe how lucky I was to have him as my stepfather.

As lucky as I am to have him as a big brother.

You know, he’s one of the strongest, bravest, toughest guys out there. Gabi, he’s gonna get through this, just like he always does.

He fought so hard to get me out of prison.

Yeah, him and Stefan both, right?

I’m lucky to have him too. Neither of them ever lost faith in me.

Ava. Thought you were–

Gabi? Sorry to disappoint. No, she, uh–she went to the hospital to visit her brother.

How did you know that?

Well, because your wife is very conscientious. And she alerted the office that she was going to the hospital and she wasn’t coming back in. So I decided to take this opportunity to talk to you alone.

You left Titan?

I cleared out my office this morning, yeah. Now that I’m not Victor’s son anymore, I couldn’t really make a case for keeping the CEO job. Anyway, when I was leaving and bringing all my belongings, I realized that I didn’t really want to go to the house either, or the Kiriakis mansion, rather. I just don’t feel like I belong there anymore.

So here you are.

Here I am, yeah, full circle. Although I don’t know. Things just moved so fast after Victor’s death, I never even got around to, you know, giving up the lease.

Mm. Well, good thing, huh?

Damn good thing, as it turns out. Yeah, although I haven’t been back in there since I walked out the door. The AC’s off. It’s probably , degrees inside.

[sighs] Well, I mean, my place is kind of a mess right now. So wanna go to the pub, grab a beer?

Yes. Yes, I would like that.

[soft music]

Can you explain to me why you still have those gloves?

I’m gonna take ’em down to Forensics as soon as I finish this report. And I don’t know. I guess I’m– I guess I’m still trying to make this real for myself.

I hear that. I hear that. Jada, are you all right? I mean, as if Rafe’s case wasn’t personal enough already.

No, I should have– I should have– I should have put this together sooner. I-I-I should have– I should have realized that the man that, uh–that– that–that Bobby was capable of stabbing–

Now stop. Stop. You can’t blame yourself. I mean, you had no reason to suspect that your ex was capable of this kind of violence, right?

No. But he was. And now the man that I love is– he’s lying in some hospital bed. And I don’t even know if he’s gonna wake up. I don’t know if I’m gonna ever hear his voice!

Listen, listen! Listen to me, Jada. This was not your fault. No. I’ve been there. I was with a man capable of terrible violence too.

You were?

[somber piano music]

Yes. Oh. Not Abe of course, no. No one on earth could treat me better. But my–my daughter Lani’s father, Ray, he had a terrible mean streak. He used to hit me and then make me believe that I deserved it, that I made him act that way. Took me a long time, but I finally realized I wasn’t the cause of it, just like you aren’t responsible for Bobby.

Thank you for saying that.

It’s the truth.

I guess I’m– I guess I’m still in shock. Even with the gloves right there in front of me, I just can’t believe that the man that I was married to would be capable of murder. That–that–that is not the man that I knew.

And you also never knew about his personality disorder, did you?

No. Bobby had so many secrets. I just hope that one of those secrets is not gonna cost Rafe his life.

I know Rafe loved being your stepfather too. He’d always show me pictures of you with your little jacket playing Junior G-man. [both laugh]

Yeah. Yeah, I still have that jacket somewhere. Gosh, I used to drive my dad up a wall.

Yeah, doesn’t take much to do that, does it?

No. No, unfortunately not. You know, EJ DiMera.

Mm.

Once he’s upset about something, he can hold a grudge for forever.

So I’ve noticed.

Hey, by the way, I just– I wanted to say that I’m sorry, you know, for how long he took to help you get out of prison. It was totally wrong of him to let you sit in there for something you didn’t do.

Thanks. But I have to admit, I’m a little surprised you’re being so nice to me.

Why?

Well, I did expose the truth about what your father did to Eric and Nicole.

Yeah, you did. I’m glad you did. I mean, besides keeping you in prison, my God, he was keeping my uncle Eric from his child. He was letting Nicole believe a huge lie.

Yeah, well, I have a feeling he’d say he was doing the kid a favor.

He’d be wrong. Yeah, he’d be wrong. Anyway, I just hope he’d, you know, get something out of this. Maybe he’s learned some kind of lesson. He’s definitely paid the price. He’s basically lost everyone he loves.

Even he and Stefan are on the outs. So yeah.

Yeah. Hey. Um, speaking of your husband, happy anniversary.

Thanks. That’s sweet of you to remember.

Yeah, Stefan might have hinted at your surprise. I know he wanted today to be really special for you.

Ah. Well, I am happy to report he succeeded.

Well, I’m glad to hear that.

[laughs]

Making up for, uh, lost time, I guess. You know, when–when you were in prison, he was so lonely and miserable.

Something happened at the office today.

Care to be more specific?

Okay. I could be overreacting. But I don’t know. I–

Does this has something to do with Gabi?

Sort of. It has to do with her new assistant.

Connie?

Yeah.

What about her?

Okay, well, Kristen and I, we were talking, um… about what happened between us, and Connie, she sort of walked in on it.

So the nutjob heard you?

No, I don’t know. I don’t know. Kristen–Kristen is pretty sure that she didn’t.

Oh, pretty sure?

Yeah. Look. It’s not like we could ask her, right?

Okay, what–what exactly did you say? Did you explicitly say that you and I slept together?

I believe so.

[dark music]

This is bad. This is so bad.

Okay. No. Listen, listen, listen. Connie is new. She’s new at DiMera, right? So even if she did hear a piece of the conversation, she probably has no idea what we were talking about.

Why? Why were you even talking about this in the office in the first place? The woman is Gabi’s assistant.

Yeah, I know. But she seems harmless.

I did not murder Everett Lynch. He left a suicide note, as in, he killed himself.

Except he didn’t write that note. You did, after you poisoned his coffee.

Did I?

Ya did, Connie.

Can’t get anything past you, can I?

Mm, not anymore.

Okay, I can’t help it if the perfect method just fell into my lap. I had to do it. Everett-Bobby, Bobby-Everett was going to expose me to Detective Hunter for, you know, stabbing the Commish. And the only reason I stabbed the Commish was because Everett-Bobby, Bobby-Everett was going to expose me for, you know–

Stabbing… me.

I told you, that was Stefan and Gabi’s fault. We would have been together a long time ago if it wasn’t for the two of them. But don’t worry. I’m going to make them pay for what they did. And I know exactly how.

[gentle music]

Uh, you look incredible.

Yeah, well, I am just happy not to be covered in flour.

Mm, well, how do you feel about a little, uh, sugar?

Mm.

Can’t believe that line actually worked.

Oh, no, it wasn’t the line.

Mm. [sighs]

Are you hungry? I’m sure that Cook has some leftovers from dinner.

Yeah, I ate at the hospital. Thank you.

Well, why were you at the hospital?

I went to see Rafe.

Oh, yeah. I forgot you said you were going to go do that.

Yeah.

How’s he doing?

Uh, still hasn’t woken up.

Oh.

But I saw Gabi.

Yeah, well, man, she must be really, really scared.

Scared, sad. But you know Gabi. She’s fresh outta prison, her brother’s in a coma, and she’s just powering on through, you know, tough as nails, no drowning in her sorrows for Gabi DiMera.

So how does it feel?

How does what feel?

To be unrich.

[chuckles] I’m still getting used to it, I guess. It’s not even about the money. Okay, it’s not entirely about the money. It’s more the whiplash of being Victor’s son and then not being Victor’s son.

Well, I’m sure Justin, your dad, is pretty happy to have you back.

He is. I’m happy about that too, but still.

It’s not easy having your life flipped upside down twice in less than a year.

Yeah, you could say that. But enough about me and my problems. [sighs] How are you? You told me that you and Everett broke up. I know that guy meant a lot to you.

He did.

Think there’s any chance you two might get back together?

No. No, there isn’t. Everett’s dead.

[gentle country music]

So the case against Everett Lynch is closed?

Yeah, Bobby confessed to everything in his suicide note, about him faking his personality integration to get out of Bayview and him stabbing Rafe to get him away from me.

Then it’s over.

Not exactly. See, we haven’t yet resolved who really killed Li Shin.

Right. Uh. But you told me you had a new suspect. But you didn’t say who.

Well, Bobby never told me who. He just said that it was someone other than Gil Carter. And he also claimed that he knew who attacked Rafe.

Well, he sure as hell did know, since he did it himself.

Well, yeah, right.

Could–wait. Could–could Bobby have killed Li as well?

I mean, I don’t know. I’m not ruling that out. [sighs] But it’s a possibility. But I don’t–I don’t understand why he wouldn’t just include that in his suicide note. I mean, at that point, it wouldn’t matter. And plus, I don’t know what his motive would be to kill Li Shin. As far as I know, they haven’t had any connection.

I knew working for Gabi would pay off. But even I didn’t know it would happen so quickly.

Well, what’d you do, steal her corporate credit card?

Even better. I overheard Ava talking to Kristen DiMera. And guess what they were talking about?

Oh, uh, the Cubs.

Not even close.

Uh, um, fall fashion?

Still cold.

Come on. Come on. Just tell–

Okay. Okay. Ava was saying that she slept with Stefan while Gabi was still in prison.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. That’s a turn of events, Gabi being the cheatee, as opposed to the cheater.

I thought you’d like that.

Mm-hmm.

And if Gabi finds out–

It’s gonna blow her marriage with Stefan sky-high.

You betcha.

Do you have a plan to do it?

Not yet.

[groans]

[exhales heavily] I almost dropped it today. Gabi and Stefan were having a romantic afternoon at the Bistro for their anniversary. I came to deliver Gabi some papers. And I saw the two of them being very lovey-dovey. And I came this close to giving them the ultimate gift. But in the end, I decided to keep my trap shut.

No, I mean, that doesn’t sound like you at all.

I admit I’m not usually one for delayed gratification. But I realized, this is a bomb with a long fuse. And I decided to detonate it when it will have the maximum impact.

And when’s that?

[mysterious music]

You know, Connie was here earlier, when I was with Gabi.

How did she seem?

You mean, did she seem like someone who knew I had cheated on my wife?

Okay. Okay. Why was she here? What did she want?

She wanted Gabi to sign some papers I guess you needed her to sign.

Really?

Yeah.

Because I was going to messenger those over. I did not ask her to have them signed. Oh, my– [groans] Okay, what do you think that means?

Maybe it means she’s incredibly efficient.

Oh.

Okay, I’m gonna ask you one more time.

[sighs]

Do you think she heard you?

Look, I think–

[tense music] I think that if she came here and she was acting normal, then we are safe.

That doesn’t make me feel any better. And just so you know, I told Gabi that you and I kissed two times when we were both playing our parts trying to get her out of prison.

Great. How’d she react?

She didn’t love it.

Mm.

But she understood. Can we make a new rule?

What rule?

A rule that says going forward, we don’t discuss this ever again, because it’s done, and because I can’t risk anybody hearing something that they shouldn’t, especially not Gabi.

Hey, babe, everything okay?

Yep.

Oh, how’s Rafe doing?

Same. What are you doing here, Ava?

Oh, I, um– I just–I came–

She has some papers she needs you to sign.

Yeah, I did, but, um, well, Stefan let me know that, um, your new assistant already came over and had you sign a copy. Yeah?

Yeah. I signed them and gave ’em back to her. And, you know, she hasn’t been my assistant for long, but Connie doesn’t seem like the type of person who sits around and waits for things to happen.

[soft tense music]

I admit I’m pretty anxious to reveal Stefan’s infidelity to Gabi, but I’m not in a hurry. Revenge being a dish best served cold and all that.

Hmm, but do you really have the patience to wait?

This time, I do. Because the longer that Gabi thinks her dearly devoted husband was faithful while she was in the slammer, the more delicious it’s going to be when she finds out he was tangling in the sheets with his so-called coworker.

Oh, this is gonna be ugly, especially now that Gabi and Ava are working together.

And you know what? I think I’m gonna help those two lady bosses get past their differences, learn to get along.

Oh. You want Gabi and Ava to be friends?

The closer the better, so when it all goes sour, it’ll be almost as good as what happened with Charlemagne and Cassandra.

Oh, um, I’m not sure I know who that is.

“Body & Soul”?

Uh, no, never seen it.

Your loss.

Mm.

A friend of mine got me hooked. The old episodes are on YouTube. We’ll have to schedule a binge sesh.

Sounds great.

[laughs] Anyway, how fun is it going to be watching those two bond, knowing all the time I can destroy them whenever I want? And speaking of what I want, I think it’s time for bed, don’t you?

It’s not even :.

I had a long first day at the office. And you’ve been on your feet all day.

I just–I wish there was more I could do, you know, for Rafe, for Gabi.

Well, you’re being a good friend, and that is a lot.

Doesn’t, uh– doesn’t feel like a lot.

Well, that is because you are a sensitive soul, Giovanni. And that’s what makes you such a good director.

I don’t know about that.

Yeah. Well, I do. And you’re caring. And you’re passionate. And that is what makes you a great person.

Well, if…[clears throat] I am truly such a great person, it’s only because I’m inspired by the even better person that I am lucky enough to get to share my life with.

[sweet music]

Mm, I’m sleepy now. [laughs]

Yeah, me too. But, hey, um, do you mind if I watch some videos before we call it a night? It’s for work.

Work? I thought you hadn’t started “Body & Soul” yet.

Well, I haven’t, but, uh, I found some old YouTube videos, some episodes of “Body & Soul.” And I thought I’d just, you know, watch a few of them, do some research, get a sense for the directing style.

So your work is watching TV. [laughs]

I didn’t say it was hard work.

Uh-huh. Yeah. Well, let’s watch together. I love “Body & Soul.”

Yeah?

Mm-hmm.

Okay. Let’s do it.

Okay.

[groans]

Steph, I am so sorry.

[sighs] Thanks.

Oh, my God, the guy you love just took his own life. And I’m over here complaining about losing my inheritance.

No, it’s okay. You didn’t know.

Still, that is an absolute tragedy. It’s terrible.

Yeah, especially because it seemed like he was starting to get his life together.

Do you think maybe it could have been, like, an accidental overdose?

He left a note. Well, his alter, Bobby, did.

So does that mean Bobby was the one who took the pills?

Yeah. Somehow, that makes it even worse. Look, I know it sounds strange to say. But I don’t think– I don’t think any of this is what Everett wanted. But because of this terrible disorder… He was a good person, Alex. He–he didn’t deserve this. He didn’t deserve any of this.

[sad country music] [sighs]

Oh, Jada, honey, I can only imagine how confusing and painful this whole ordeal has been.

Yeah, well, it’s not something I expected. That’s for sure.

Well, on behalf of the city, I’m grateful that there’s no longer violent criminals to let loose.

Yeah, I’m trying to take comfort in that.

Mm-hmm. You did your job, Commissioner, under the worst of circumstances.

It doesn’t feel like that. I mean, especially when you call me that. You know, Rafe should be sitting here right now. And he’s not because of a man that I brought into his life.

You know when he wakes up, he won’t see it that way. Um, you know, why don’t you just, you know, take–take the rest of the day off? Just–just go home for the day.

Okay. Is that an order?

If it has to be.

[laughs] Okay. But first I should call Gabi.

Does she know about Everett?

No, not yet.

Oof.

But I hope that she’ll find some comfort in knowing that the man that hurt her brother is off the streets.

Oof. Oh, oh. Hang in there.

[sighs]

Well, since you’ve already signed the papers, looks like I can go.

Looks like.

Yeah, well, happy anniversary, you guys.

Thank you.

Mm-hmm.

Thanks, Ava.

And, uh, I will see you at the office tomorrow.

See you there.

All right.

So those papers must be pretty important if everybody in your company is tracking you down to sign ’em.

It seems a little below Ava’s pay grade, to be honest. I hope it wasn’t too awkward when she showed up.

Awkward? No, no, she and I– [phone rings]

It’s Jada. Hey, what’s going on?

Hey, sorry to bother you on your anniversary. But can we talk for a minute?

Of course. Is it about Rafe?

Yes, it is. I got some new information. And I think it will bring you some closure.

Amazing.

Wait, wait. Pause it.

Uh, okay. What’s–what’s wrong?

Okay, so you mean to tell me that the whole time that Charlemagne was married to Exeter that he was her half brother?

Well. Okay. Look, I know it looks bad. But it turns out Exeter was switched at birth. So it’s actually all cool, I mean, relatively speaking, anyway.

Mm, are you sure “relative” is the word you want to use?

[laughs] That is, uh, an excellent point.

I’m just saying, these people live some crazy lives.

Well, are they really any crazier than the days of our lives?

Well, I mean–

I mean, hey, look. My dad’s baby, they thought he was dead. And then it turns out he was actually just adopted by Sloan and Eric, and then it turns out that he was actually Nicole and Eric’s baby after all.

Yeah.

And then if you look what my cousin Theresa did to Alex Kiriakis, I mean, letting him think he’s the heir to the Kiriakis fortune, I mean, talk about turning someone’s life upside down.

Yeah, I hope he has somebody to lean on.

Yeah.

[gentle music] [sighs]

Thanks. I, um, definitely wasn’t expecting to cry on your shoulder tonight.

I guess we’re even, since you were there for me the night my wedding absolutely exploded. Steph, I’m really sorry about Everett.

I appreciate that. And, um, it’s getting late, so we should– we should probably head back to our respective apartments.

Yeah, yeah. At least it’s convenient– being neighbors, you know? Come here, go back there, one car.

Yeah, very convenient.

All right, well, I’ll go find the waiter and take care of this check.

Oh, yeah, right.

Oh, no, no, no. Hey. It’s on me.

[sighs] Thanks.

[gentle country music]

So Bobby was pretending to be Everett all along. [monitor beeping steadily] He obviously didn’t want you around. God, I am so sorry, Rafe. I wouldn’t have believed any of this, if I hadn’t lived it. And I am so sorry. I am so sorry. [sighs] But I just– I wish I knew what he was capable of. I wish I was able to protect you. [sniffles]

[somber music]

At least now we– we have the case closed. And he’s gone. And now all I want to do, all I want to do is focus on you. I want us to focus on getting you to come back to us.

I can’t believe this, Bobby, Everett, whatever the– whatever his name is, is the one who stabbed Rafe.

At least he’s dead, though, right?

Honestly, I’m not even sure that makes me feel any better.

No? Not even a little?

First of all, it doesn’t make Rafe any more likely to wake up. And to have it happen like this, a phone call out of the blue, it just feels so– so unsatisfying. Like I’ll never get to see him brought to justice. I’ll never get to confront him face-to-face.

Okay. But at least he did pay, right? I mean, he’s dead. Justice was served in that respect. And the most important thing is, the person who hurt Rafe can never do it to anyone ever again.

[ominous music]
