Diane: Jack, kyle, what’s — what’s the problem?
Jack: You.
Diane: Wh– police?
Kyle: This is her.
Diane: [ Scoffs ] Wait, what have I done?
Ready to press charges?
Kyle: I have waited my entire life.
Diane: Charges?
Jack: We’re charging you with abandonment.
Diane: [ Scoffs ] No. No, you don’t understand.
Jack: Oh, I understand. I understand plenty well. You’re a liar. You’re a coward. You said you wanted to have a child more than anything in the world. You didn’t have the patience to raise him. You couldn’t wait to get out of town to avoid the pandemonium you created.
Diane: No, no, it wasn’t like that. Besides, I’m a good person now.
Jack: You turned your back on your own child.
Diane: [ Exhales sharply ]
Jack: You know, when you have a little kid, you assume they’re gonna go along with pretty much everything you say, the way you think. And then they grow up and have opinions of their own.
Kyle: Mm. The nerve.
Jack: Not the easiest thing in the world, encourage your son to chart his own path and — and watch him make decisions that make you a little nervous.
Kyle: I know harrison will eventually get there. I’m already dreading it.
Jack: Have you been in touch with your mother since you told her you were gonna give her a chance to prove herself?
Kyle: Nope.
Jack: Having second thoughts?
Kyle: Big time.
Billy: Hi.
Lily: Hi.
Billy: Did you order for me?
Lily: I did.
Billy: You did? Great. Did you get me a cute little teapot with a cute little cup? I need to keep my vocal cords all nice and smooth for my podcast.
Lily: Oh, “the grinning soul.”
Billy: You heard it. Am I in the doghouse?
Lily: I am concerned.
Billy: Okay, but have you seen the numbers? Because it’s doing pretty well for a brand-new series.
Lily: Billy —
Billy: I did all the things that we talked about doing. I altered my voice. I made all the names and locations anonymous to protect the guilty.
Lily: It doesn’t matter. It’s gonna take two seconds for anyone close to the situation to know that you’re talking about ashland.
Billy: Well, if the sociopathic shoe fits…
Adam: So first victoria says she doesn’t need a partner, then, suddenly, out of nowhere, she appoints nikki as co-ceo. That spot should’ve been mine.
Sally: [ Sighs ] Did victor back her up?
Adam: [ Sighs ] She said it was a unilateral decision, that she didn’t need our father’s approval, which is untrue. He would have to sign off on something like that, which means he did. And word is already spreading to the company of nikki’s appointment, and did anybody bother warning me about it? Just another one of my dad’s mind games, another game of musical chairs, when once again I’m standing here being left out in the cold.
Sally: [ Sighs ] So victoria lets ashland get his hooks into the company, and then once he’s out, she just goes back to business like nothing happened, like she wasn’t the cause of all this chaos.
Adam: [ Sighs ] I don’t know why I waste my time hoping that they’ll give me a chance. It’s never gonna happen. I mean, this is our pattern.
Sally: I hate seeing them put you through the wringer, especially since it is clear to me that you don’t need any of them.
Adam: [ Sighs ] Any suggestions on what I should do about it?
Sally: Strike out on your own. Cut ties with the newmans altogether. So what’s going on?

provided by… when asthma symptoms strike, airways narrow.
Adam: Cutting ties? I have done that. More than once. I’m not sure I want to do it again.
Sally: Why not? Maybe your mistake was returning to the newman family fold.
Adam: Look, here’s the thing, my dad has this seemingly blind acceptance of victoria’s leadership abilities no matter how many times she screws up. And as long as she is in charge, she’s gonna cut me out, so if i walk away, it just feels like I’m conceding, like I’m letting her win.
Sally: Would that really be the worst thing in the world?
Adam: Um…I’m the one that came up with the idea to get locke out for good. I am the one that should be rewarded for that. She is still in my way, and she still refuses to acknowledge that I’m the one that saved her. So why should I give her what she wants?
Sally: You said it yourself — victor could’ve stepped in and vetoed victoria’s decision to promote nikki. But he didn’t, he let it stand in a transparent ploy to block you from what you deserve, what you earned. You have come way too far and you have done way too much to prove yourself to your family, and it is never enough.
Adam: Well, thanks for rubbing in in.
Sally: No, my point is if they are not gonna show you the respect that you have been looking for, then why stick around? You don’t need them. You’re talented and inspired and capable of making brilliant moves on your own.
Adam: Okay, so let’s say i did what you’re proposing and i cut all ties and I walked away from all things newman, including running newman media, and I left you here on your own to deal with my family. Would you really be okay with that?
Sally: [ Sighs ]
Jack: You abandoned kyle.
Diane: No, I walked away because that’s what was best.
Jack: For you!
Diane: No, for kyle! Please, I love my son.
Jack: Lies.
Diane: No! I do!
Jack: She walked away and never looked back.
Diane: Why are you doing this? It was the hardest decision of my life.
Kyle: She’s a complete fraud. Can’t be trusted. Don’t buy a word of it.
Jack: Never looked back.
Diane: There was an empty, broken place in my heart without you, and it started to heal when you said you’d give me a second chance. Please don’t take this away from me, kyle.
>>A mother letting her kid think she’s dead — that’s as low as it gets.
Diane: I didn’t want to abandon him. I wanted to come back.
Jack: You know how you can tell she’s lying? She’s moving her mouth.
Kyle: Mm.
Diane: I wanted you with me every day, kyle, but you deserved better. You deserved a stable, safe place where you could have the best that life had to offer.
You have the right to remain silent.
Diane: [ Exhales sharply ]
Kyle: She’s a prodigious liar so that’s not gonna happen.
And the right to an attorney.
Kyle: She’ll never find one to take this case.
Jack: Defending a woman who left her boy motherless?
Diane: Please, please. No! No, you don’t understand.
Jack: Have some dignity. Do the right thing for once. Go!
Diane: No!
[ Sighs ]
Jack: Ooh, stealing harrison’s cookies.
Kyle: Mm, I won’t tell if you don’T.
Jack: I’ll pass.
Kyle: Not that I ever want to keep things from my son. I like to think I haven’t inherited my mother’s bad habits.
Jack: I can see this is really weighing on you.
Kyle: Can’t sleep. Every time I close my eyes, i think about the awful things she’s done. How she’s hurt people I love, and how am I supposed to reconcile that woman, the one who walked away when I was so young, to the woman that she says she is now?
Jack: Believe, I understand how complicated your situation is.
Kyle: And she says that she turned her life around. That she recreated herself, and the last time I saw her, before she sent me away, before she changed my name, she promised that she was going to join me, but then she chose to vanish from my life.
[ Stammers ] Pretend she was dead.
Jack: Did she maybe share with you her reasoning in making those decisions?
Kyle: Yeah, they — they all sounded plausible. And — and potentially rehearsed. I… like she had been waiting for the chance to say them all to my face.
Jack: And that’s what’s keeping you awake at night.
Kyle: Yeah.
Jack: So what are you gonna do about it?
Kyle: I don’t know. We’ve heard all the facts, what mom did, what she said. I need to know how you feel about all this. What — what’s your gut telling you?
Jack: Kyle, I made a promise to myself not to interfere, not to try to influence how you felt about your mother and her story.
Kyle: Yeah, and I appreciate that you’ve managed to put your own personal feelings aside and encourage me to walk into this with an open mind, but now that I’ve heard her out, I need to unravel whether I believe she’s changed into a good, trustworthy person, or if it’s the little kid in me that’s wishing it were true.
Jack: And you want to be objective.
Kyle: And I don’t think I can be.
Jack: So you’ve come to me for that.
Kyle: Dads have all the answers. At least that’s what harrison says.
Jack: Yeah, I remember that. Cherish that.
Kyle: I do.
Jack: Kyle, for the last few days, I have puzzled over the same questions that have bedeviled you. Why did diane come back now of all times to reveal that she’s still alive? Can we still believe her?
Kyle: Bingo.
Jack: I have asked for the benefit of the doubt more times than I can count, so I put myself in diane’s shoes when she made that horrible decision all those years ago, tried to explain to myself why I would leave my child behind.
Kyle: Given that the original plan, the one she worked out with adam, was so that she could fake her own death so she could leave with me.
Jack: Diane claims she changed her mind, that she didn’t want that future for you, living on the run. She didn’t believe I would ever give up on trying to find either of you. And she’s 100% right about that.
Kyle: But if she had just come to me from the beginning and tried to explain, we could —
Jack: Kyle, listen to me. You were very young. Would you have understood? And would it have been any better, knowing that she’s out there somewhere without you? You’d have spent your life asking questions that would have made you a completely different man, and I happen to love the man you have become. So maybe, just maybe, this one time, diane made the right choice in leaving the way she did.
Sally: Have I told you how much I hate hypotheticals?
Adam: You’ve never imagined it?
Sally: What I would do if you noped out of newman and left me here alone?
Adam: Would you stay or would you go?
Sally: I would keep my job and do my best to win your entire family over.
Adam: Why?
Sally: Because, aside from the fact that I love my job and that I have absolute faith that we will be phenomenally successful wherever we choose to be, do you know how rare this is? To find someone who thinks the way that you do, who believes in you, who makes you laugh, who wants what you want? Have you ever met anyone like that?
Adam: Yeah. Once.
Sally: For the first time, i actually feel like I’m meeting someone on my level. That is why we work, because we take each other exactly how we are. I don’t need you to be the good or the bad version of yourself or what everyone else expects you to be.
Adam: What — what do you want?
Sally: Just you. All of you.
Adam: [ Sighs ] Look, knowing that you are willing to brave my family, it should make the decision to walk away easier. But it just — it feels different this time. I don’t know if — if I’m older and wiser or it’s knowing that someone has my back. But now I just — it feels like walking away, I would be giving up instead of doing something on my own terms. On the other hand, despite my best efforts, I could just be falling for my dad’s games, craving the look of approval in his eyes.
Sally: Yeah. His opinion will always mean something to you, no matter what.
Adam: I just don’t think that I can ignore the challenge that victoria threw down by hiring nikki over me.
Sally: You shouldn’t have to battle for recognition, especially after everything you’ve done for your family. But if you choose to stay and fight, I will still be here. And if you want to just walk away and turn your back on all of them, then I will stand by you. Either way, I will support you. I’ll weigh in with my advice and do my best to make sure that we are both successful.
Adam: So I guess the only thing now is to consider what is best for me right now.
Sally: But I will continue to tell you that you deserve better. And then I will kiss you to drive the point home.
Billy: The whole point of recording a second voice-altered podcast was so I could talk about the issues that billy abbott needs to publicly distance himself from.
Lily: Look, if you try to convince me that two billys are better than one —
Billy: Well, just hear me out for a second, because the way i see it, billy one is your right-hand man. Billy two is untamed, a rebel that answers to no one.
Lily: Look, you know I love the idea of the anonymous podcast where you can talk about what you want without there being any blowback to the company.
Billy: I love your ability to say “but” without actually saying “but.”
Lily: You have a confrontation with ashland, then you turn right around and vent about it on a podcast?
Billy: I didn’t mention our names.
Lily: It doesn’t matter. Anyone can connect the dots.
Billy: I think you’re worried about it because you know the players. So think about it for a second without picturing the snake that we all know very, very well. I could’ve been talking about any other mogul who has used manipulation and deceit to rise to power. And that is what the average listener is going to hear.
Lily: Yeah, and I really hope that you’re right. And look, I agree with the message that you sent, but be prepared if certain people — like victoria — see beyond this “grinning soul” persona and know that it’s you putting it out there. I brought in ensure max protein,
Billy: Wasn’t it you that requested we not talk about victoria at least for one day? So here’s the deal. Did she need protecting? Yes, I believe she did. Before she found out the kind of man that ashland locke was. But now that she knows, the truth is out there, then I don’t see the harm.
Lily: If anyone figures out that these stories are about ashland, how do you think that’s gonna make victoria look?
Billy: Like a sympathetic figure. Like a loving partner that was deceived from the most heinous of men, and I hope that she appreciates the fact that I’m not personally getting involved in her problems, because you were right — that would be a bad idea.
Lily: Have you thought about what would happen if it’s ashland that figures out that you’re behind this?
Billy: I hope he does. I really do. I hope he puts together the math, and I would pay to see the look on his face when he realizes that he is the monster underneath the bed and that everyone listening out there is putting together the story. Recoiling from horror at all the lies that he’s perpetrated his entire life, because ashland locke needs to realize that actions have consequences.
Jack: Kyle, to be clear, I am not condoning anything else that diane has done or offering any opinions about who she is as a person.
Kyle: Noted.
Jack: She hurt a lot of people in a lot of ways, and I — I just —
Kyle: What is it? I asked you to be completely honest with me.
Jack: Kyle, if diane had stuck to her original plan, taking you with her and disappeared, would I ever see you again? I mean, if she evaded every effort I made to track you two down… I hate to even think what that would have been to us. And I can’t think about your situation without thinking about my mother. I was absolutely gutted when she left our family, when she — when she left me behind. I was angry for so many years, and when she walked back into our lives, I wanted to slam the door in her face. It is nothing short of a miracle that before she died, we were able to reconcile, that I found some understanding and some forgiveness. It’s one of the greatest gifts of my life. Do I want that for you? Absolutely, more than anything. Maybe this once diane did the right thing. I’m not saying she’s changed. I’m not saying I accept everything she’s telling us on faith. I’m just saying I believe the decision to leave you behind is the toughest decision she ever made in her life.
Kyle: [ Sighs ]
Jack: Kyle, I know that’s not the simple answer you were hoping to get from me. But there’s nothing simple about this.
Kyle: You’re right. It’d be cool if we could just run a sim.
Jack: Come again?
Kyle: A simulation. What a future with my mother in it would look like.
Jack: And how exactly would we pull that off?
Kyle: We put her to the full abbott test.
Diane: [ Sighs ]
[ Cellphone chimes ]
Jack: Thank you, kyle. I’ll take care of the rest.
Meet ron.
“The young and the restless”
will continue.
Lily: Look, even the thought of someone possibly having cancer can turn their life upside down, so the fact that ashland used a lie like that to make a profit, I mean, it makes me angry that he’s walking around here with no care in the world. So, yes, you know, this has a very personal thing thing for me.
Billy: 100%, and it sounds like we agree, so why are you upset about the podcast?
Lily: Because I don’t like the idea of you possibly losing this amazing platform because you’re not being careful with when and how to, you know, put this information out there.
Billy: I get it, I do. But I really don’t think that this is going to be a blip on victoria’s radar. She’s got more important things to keep her mind on rather than the anonymous musings of “the grinning soul.”
Lily: Well, I really hope you’re right.
Billy: I am right. You don’t want me to be right, because then I would pile up the other side of all the other times I’ve been right, and then it’ll be off-balance.
Lily: Oh, my god, give me a break.
Billy: Oh, saved by a phone call.
Lily: Then answer it. I don’t care.
Billy: Jack.
Jack: Drop whatever you’re doing and come to the abbott house. I’m calling a family meeting.
Billy: Okay, but what if I’m in the middle of something important?
Jack: Nothing’s more important than supporting kyle right now. Ashley, traci, abby are all on their way. Hopefully I can count on you, too.
Billy: Yeah, of course, I’ll be there as soon as I can.
Lily: What’s going on?
Billy: Jack is calling a family meeting because it sounds like kyle is back in town, and, you know, diane is not dead anymore, so sounds like a fun occasion.
Lily: Well, unlike the chancellor-winters meeting you’ll be missing.
Billy: Uh, yeah, can I get a pass on that?
Lily: Uh, I really need my coo there.
Billy: Yeah, you’re right. Wouldn’t be the first time that I show up late to a family gathering. I’ll just go when I’m done.
Lily: You sure?
Billy: 100%. You and chancellor-winters are my top priorities.
Sally: Sneaking upstairs to a suite here never gets old.
Adam: [ Chuckles ] Oh, my god.
Sally: Adam?
Adam: Diane. Welcome to the resurrection club. First rule of resurrection club is we don’t talk about the resurrection club.
Diane: Hello, adam. You’re not as shocked to see me as I would’ve expected.
Adam: Well, my father spoiled the surprise.
Diane: Oh, I should’ve known.
Adam: Mm.
Diane: Mm.
Adam: Mm. You know, back when it really did look like you had bought the farm, I wanted to send you a “bite me” card for leaving things in a way that I would be implicated in your death, but i couldn’t find a forwarding address to hell.
Diane: I regret many things about that time.
Adam: How could you even stand to look at yourself in the mirror?
Diane: Well, I justified my actions by telling myself how resourceful you were, not that it’s any excuse.
Adam: Got to do what you got to do, right? I mean, half the people wanted you dead, and you did not disappoint. Everyone thought you were pushing up daisies. Really, it was impressive. But as someone who knows firsthand — and this is the second rule of resurrection club — once you’ve escaped, it’s the best idea not to come back.
Sally: Hello. I’m sally. Sally spectra. Adam and I work together.
Diane: Oh, I gather things have progressed beyond that, since it appears you were headed upstairs.
Sally: [ Chuckles ]
Adam: You have more nerve than I thought, coming back to town, staying in phyllis’ hotel. It’s a death wish. Some things never change.
Diane: Everything’s changed. As I told victor, I’m not here to cause trouble or have anything to do with your family. I’m here for one reason only — kyle.
Adam: Your son that you abandoned, even though you and i had made a plan for you to be able to join him and start a new life together. Hey, but plans change, right?
Diane: I won’t make excuses or try to justify what I did.
Adam: Smart.
Diane: Yes, I don’t like who I was back then, and I’m not proud of the things I did. Something I think you can understand.
Adam: [ Exhales sharply ] Well, I guess the new-and-improved diane isn’t above taking potshots at her former co-conspirator.
Diane: No, that’s not what i was doing. I’ve managed to keep up with what’s going on in genoa city. I know that you’ve worked hard to turn over a new leaf and make a different life for yourself.
Adam: What is your point?
Diane: I just want the same thing that everyone gave you. A second chance.
Adam: I hope that is true. I don’t have the same kind of beef with you that the rest do, so good luck, I guess.
Diane: Thank you, adam. Nice to meet you, sally.
Sally: You too.
Abby: Kyle!
Ashley: Good to see you, kyle. How are you?
Kyle: Hanging in there.
Traci: I have been thinking about you nonstop since our chat, and I’m hoping so much that you were able to find a little clarity.
Jack: Billy should be here any minute. I know we all have a lot of questions, but we’re kind of running out of time.
Abby: Why? What’s going on? I thought this was a family meeting.
Kyle: We’re having a special visitor arrive soon.
Traci: Not —
Jack: Yes, her.
Ashley: Diane jenkins is coming here?
Kyle: She is.
Ashley: I can’t believe she would have the nerve to come back to genoa city, let alone this house.
Kyle: Actually, she’s already been here. This won’t be my first time seeing her.
Ashley: Well, it will be your last, if I have anything to say about it.
Abby: If someone had told me that diane was gonna be at —
Jack: It’s why I didn’t tell you, abby.
Kyle: She claims she’s changed.
Ashley: Into what, exactly?
Jack: Would you let him finish his thought, please?
Kyle: She says that she spent her time away getting her life together.
Abby: [ Scoffs ] Okay, should we be amused or afraid? Why is she back in genoa city?
Kyle: For me, to explain herself and ask for forgiveness.
Ashley: But you’re not actually considering forgiving her, right? Because even if she has spent the last few years polishing her halo through charity and good works, you know that it’s — it’s just an act, right?
Abby: Kyle, I mean, how do you feel about all this? It can’t be easy finding out that your mother’s alive and that she wants to reconnect with you.
Ashley: Use you. Let’s not forget who we’re talking about.
Kyle: I’m not sure what to think.
Abby: After all of these years, maybe she wants to do the right thing?
Jack: Diane has made a very compelling case for herself.
Ashley: Oh, please. You don’t actually believe that she’s had some kind of miraculous transformation.
Jack: I am just as skeptical as you are, just as wary of her motives, but we three know what it is to be estranged from the woman who brought us —
Ashley: Don’t you dare go there, jack. I know our mother was a piece of work, but she’s nothing compared to diane.
Traci: Okay, okay, please, please. Sorry, kyle. We know that this is a very — an exceedingly difficult situation.
Abby: Kyle, look, all we want to do is support you. We want to be here for you, no matter what you choose. Right?
Jack: Abby’s right. That’s been my approach to this whole fiasco.
Ashley: Okay. I’m sorry. And please tell us, how do you feel now that you’ve actually spoken with your mother?
Kyle: I don’t know. I’ve been going back and forth trying to figure out if she’s lying or if she’s telling the truth, which is why I’ve called all of you here today.
Jack: It is one thing for diane to feed kyle a lot of well-rehearsed regrets and promises to do better.
Kyle: And something else completely to have to face me and my family. See how she handles herself in front of people who have seen her at her worst. That’s how I figure out if she’s telling the truth and if she’s sincere about being a changed person. What do you say?
Abby: I think we should.
Traci: Might as well.
Jack: Ashley, what do you think?
Ashley: Hell yes. Bring it on.
Sally: [ Chuckles ] The lows of bipolar depression
Ashley: So what time is diane’s broom scheduled to get here?
Kyle: Five minutes ago.
Abby: Maybe she got cold feet.
Traci: Look, if — if this is going to work, if it’s gonna get results, we have to all stick to the plan, okay?
Ashley: And maybe if we’re lucky, she got herself kicked out of town already.
Jack: Be nice, ash.
Ashley: This is me being nice, jack.
Kyle: Don’t bother bombarding her with old grievances. That’s not going to get us anywhere.
Abby: I loathe her as much as anyone, but the reason why we’re all here is to help kyle discover the truth.
Traci: Right, and to understand what’s on diane’s mind and in her heart.
Ashley: And to help kyle with the outcome when he realizes his mother actually has no heart.
Abby: Mom.
Ashley: No, I have seen into her soul. It’s a deep, dark abyss. I do not believe that she’s had some kind of miraculous transformation.
Adam: How are you so perfect? No, I mean it. And I’m not talking about your face, which is a thing of beauty. Or your body and the things that you can do with it. You didn’t bombard me with questions two seconds after we saw diane.
Sally: I knew that you would tell me when the time was right. And that was definitely not the time.
Adam: Okay. You ready?
Sally: Yes! Yes, I have been dying to hear all about this woman since i first heard her name, and now that I’ve seen her in the flesh, I’m like 1,000 times more pcurious.
Adam: Diane is driven. She’s obsessed. She will stop at nothing to get what she wants. And not in a good way, like you. And I wouldn’t hesitate helping her when it would work to my advantage.
Sally: In what way?
Adam: We worked together to make it look like victor was dead to drive down the price of the newman stock.
Sally: You didn’T.
Adam: Made a pretty sizable profit, too. That was the kind of relationship that we had. I agreed that I would help her escape the mess that she had made of her life, evade jack, and start a new life with her son. And that is that.
Sally: Wow.
Adam: Yeah, I did a lot of things back then that I wasn’t proud of, but I’d like to think that that scheme at least was semi-noble.
Sally: Well, diane’s right, you definitely have changed. You’ve grown.
Adam: Well, what can I say? I’m a work in progress. No, but all kidding aside, I’m glad that you’re in my corner. It’s nice being with someone who is “meeting me on my level.”
Sally: [ Chuckles ] Yes, it’s a rare thing. So what are you gonna do about your family’s latest move?
Adam: I’m not sure.
Sally: Well, I will take this ride with you wherever it goes.
Kyle: Thanks for coming.
Diane: Yeah, I was so excited when I got your text.
Kyle: Right this way.
Diane: Oh.
[ Chuckles ] I see what this is.
Ashley: You have no idea. Welcome back, bitch.
Diane: Ashley.
Ashley: You look pretty good for a dead person.
Diane: Thank you.
Traci: It’s been a long time, diane.
Diane: Lovely to see you, traci. You too, abby.
Kyle: I felt it was important that, if we’re going to take the next step, that you meet with all of us. If I’m going to allow you back in my life — and that’s still a big if — it not only affects my life, but the lives of my entire family. All of us you have a history with.
Jack: Each of us is affected one way or the other.
Diane: I have no desire to cause any problems for the abbotts.
Kyle: Nonetheless, it’s something you will have to understand and accept — your presence affects us all. Just like we will have to decide if we accept your claim that you are a different person now.
Next week on “the young and the restless”…
Adam: I have already made my decision. I want newman enterprises — every single bit of it.
Jack: I would love for you to meet allie nguyen. This is keemo’s daughter and my granddaughter.
Allie: Hi, everyone. How are you?
Michael: You were dead.
Diane: And now I’m not.
Michael: It’s pretty good to see you.
