PART TWO
At John’s funeral, Chanel talks to Tate about him having the same stories about John as Johnny does. Chanel asks how everything is going with the baby. Tate says it’s good and that the hospital tour made things feel real. Chanel asks if they’ve found another family yet for adoption. Tate says they haven’t, but they really need to because they don’t have much time left. Johnny tells Marlena that the livestream is setup so that everyone who cared about John will have a chance to say goodbye to him. Marlena asks how Johnny is doing and says that her children and grandchildren are what’s really important to her now. Johnny tells Marlena that she’s pretty important to all of them too. Marlena questions the strain between Johnny and EJ but Johnny doesn’t want to talk about EJ since today is about a good honorable man. Steve and Abe talk about their respective adventures with John. Steve declares that when the pressure was on, there was no better partner than John Black. Eric announces to everyone that the service is about to begin.
Brady asks if Rachel is ready to sit down but Rachel cries that she’s not ready to say goodbye to John. Marlena tells her that she doesn’t want to say goodbye to John either but encourages her to think about him, remember him, and hold him in her heart. Marlena gives Rachel the baseball card of John’s to remember him by. Brady thanks her and tells Rachel that they can go home if it’s too much for her. Tate says that Brady has to stay, so he offers to have he and Arianna take Rachel home which they agree with. Rachel tells Brady to remember John will always be in his heart as they hug. Tate and Arianna then exit with Rachel. Brady and Marlena go and take their seats in the front row next to Belle and Carrie. Eric then begins the ceremony by leading everyone in prayer. Eric calls this a home going service and says John is going to his eternal home, welcomed by Shawn and Caroline and all those who loved him as everyone holds back tears. Kate arrives and takes her seat next to Roman as Eric continues the service, reading a passage from the Bible. Shawn arrives and takes his seat, exchanging looks with Belle.
Hope brings Bo outside in a wheelchair where he had a picnic setup for them. Hope questions how Bo managed to pull this off when he’s still recovering. Bo admits he had help from Ciara and Chelsea. Hope comments that he’s still the same romantic he always was. Bo says it’s supposed to be a happy surprise but asks Hope what’s wrong. Hope says it’s nothing and wants to enjoy the picnic but Bo says not until she tells him what’s going on. Hope then admits it’s about John. Bo asks if he’s in some kind of trouble. Hope reveals that John is gone which Bo questions before coming to the realization.
Brady leads John’s funeral in singing “Amazing Grace”. Abe, Steve, and Shane stand up together as Abe explains that the three of them each represent a phase of John’s professional life since Abe worked with John at the Salem police department, Shane was John’s boss at the ISA, and Steve was John’s partner at Black Patch. Abe states that whether John was a cop, a spy, or a private investigator, he always fought for justice even if it meant risking his own life. Shane talks about the many commendations over the years. Steve declares that the mission that was most important to John was protecting his family and friends which is why it’s so fitting that his final act of courage was to save the life of a man he considered a brother. Abe talks about loyalty being a big part of John’s character. Abe says he left the police department a long time ago, but John always called him partner. Shane declares that they will remember John as a loyal friend and a true hero as the world is a safer place because of him.
Bo angrily states that John is dead because of him. Hope argues that nothing was going to stop John from helping Shawn and Steve get the drug. Bo complains that John had to know it was dangerous and that they all risked their lives for him. Bo asks why Hope waited so long to tell him. Hope says he had already been hit with so much. Bo can’t imagine what Marlena is going through. Hope says she talked to her this morning and she’s been strong and stoic but she’s still in shock so it hasn’t quite hit her yet. Hope mentions the funeral being today. Bo questions what they are doing here then and says they have to get going. Hope tells Bo that it’s too soon as he needs to recover. Bo doesn’t give a damn what the doctors say and declares that he has to be there for John and his family.
Kayla and Roman speak next at John’s funeral. Kayla talks about how they lost not only a close friend, but a man they called their brother. Roman talks about John believing he was Roman Brady for many years until he came back to reclaim his life. Roman says it was a difficult situation but John handled it with such extraordinary grace. Roman wonders if he told John enough that he loved him so much for the phenomenal job he did raising his children and taking care of his family which became his family. Kayla says that John became their brother by heart and talks about how John never hesitated to help someone in need. Kayla cries that John saved Bo’s life which Roman calls one in the long list of things that they will always be grateful to John for. Kayla talks about the relationship and connection John always had with their parents. Kayla brings up John naming Brady after their family and calls John one of the best men she’s ever known. Kayla declares that John’s legacy is in all of them as Roman hugs her. Belle goes to the podium to speak next. Belle talks about John being a superhero to her. Belle talks about how funny John was as well and says she’s going to try to laugh some today instead of cry because she thinks that’s what John would want. Belle declares that John is still the man as she tearfully rejoins Marlena in her seat.
Bo checks in with the doctor and asks if they are good to go but the doctor says she cannot release him. Bo argues that she said there’s technically nothing wrong with him. She says that his body is still recovering and exits the room. Bo complains to Hope that the doctor doesn’t understand. Hope understands how he feels and wishes they could be there but she just got him back and can’t lose him again, so they need to be smart, safe, and listen to the doctor.
Paul takes the podium next at John’s funeral. Paul talks about being relatively new to the family and not finding out that John was his dad until he was an adult. Paul talks about baseball bringing he and John together and those are some of the memories he will cherish most with him. Everyone responds to the New York Yankees being John’s favorite team while Paul talks about how he was also a big fan of the Chicago Cubs. Paul praises John’s ability to pivot and goes over the many things John had been through from amnesia to paralysis to a long lost son. Paul states that a baseball game could go on forever, but off the field, time sadly runs out. Paul wishes he could’ve spent more time with John and that he’d be there when he and Andrew get married. Paul talks about John making him feel loved and accepted, so every time he sees a rainbow up high or a baseball in the sky, he will think of his dad. Paul cries that he can’t wait to play another game of baseball with him again and then returns to his seat.
