PART ONE
Kayla joins Steve at the Brady Pub and tells him that she talked to Bo and he sounded wonderful. Kayla adds that it’s going to be really hard to keep the news about John from him. Steve agrees but says they can’t do anything to set back his recovery. Kayla asks how it went at the office as she assumed he packed up John’s things. Steve confirms that he has a lot of boxes in the car, but not all of John’s because he packed up his own stuff too which Kayla questions. Steve then announces that he’s shutting down Black Patch.
Brady is with Rachel at the DiMera Mansion as they prepare for John’s funeral. Rachel stops and says she doesn’t want to go.
Eric joins Belle, Carrie, and Paul in the town square. Eric talks about being nervous to officiate John’s service as he’s a little rusty. Carrie assures there’s no one they’d rather have than him. Eric just wishes he didn’t have to do it. Belle brought tissues and mints as they joke about always being prepared. Paul says John was the best at keeping everyone’s spirits up. They take their coffees and toast to John.
John’s funeral is set up outside the church with a table of his various photos surrounded by flowers. Shane Donovan joins Marlena there and tells her that he’s so sorry as they hug. Marlena thanks him for coming. Shane assures he wouldn’t be anywhere else and calls John the finest agent he ever worked with. Shane talks about the loss for the agency and of a lifelong friend. Marlena assures John felt the same about him. Marlena thanks Shane for bringing John home and making sure she had a chance to say goodbye. Shane’s son Andrew joins them and tells Marlena that he’s so sorry for her loss. Marlena thanks him and says they both mean the world to her and John. Eric, Carrie, Belle, and Paul arrive. Shane acknowledges Paul as his future son in law as Paul hugs him and Marlena. Marlena asks Belle where Brady is. Belle thinks he went to pick up Rachel, but she’s surprised he’s not there.
Brady tells Rachel that he knows it’s a sad day, but everyone’s expecting them at the church. Rachel responds that she can’t go because she doesn’t feel good. Brady points out that she was fine five seconds ago so Rachel admits it’s not that she doesn’t feel good, but she feels like she is bad luck. Rachel blames herself for John dying. Brady questions why she would say that. Rachel explains that she dreamed about John dying and then it came true. Brady assures that John did not die because she dreamed of it. Brady thinks John came to her in her dream to say goodbye one last time. Rachel cries that she can’t believe she’s never going to see him again. Brady encourages that it doesn’t mean that he won’t be with them all the time because he’ll always be in their hearts. Brady suggests they go give John a proper goodbye and hugs her as she cries.
Tate and Arianna walk through the town square together. Arianna hopes they aren’t late. Tate encourages that the service doesn’t start for awhile. Arianna is nervous as this is her first funeral and she doesn’t know what to expect. Tate assures that he and the rest of the family will be there for her. Arianna says that’s what she’s worried about as Will isn’t too happy with her right now which Tate questions. Arianna asks Tate to run interference so that Will doesn’t lecture her the whole time after disappearing the other night which Tate also questions. Arianna explains that she went out and had some fun with a guy who will remain nameless for now. Tate agrees not to say anything as he advises Arianna to be careful because she doesn’t want to end up like him, with a baby on the way.
Kayla questions Steve shutting down Black Patch. Steve says that John is gone, so it’s not Black Patch anymore and he can’t do it without his partner. Kayla understands but calls it a really big decision. Steve asks if she’s not happy about this. Kayla says they both know she hated how dangerous his job is, but he loves his work so she doesn’t know if this is the time. Steve admits he does love the work but it is time. Kayla questions what he will do since he will go stir crazy just staying at home. Steve says retiring doesn’t mean he will sit around the house all day. Steve points out he could do volunteer work, go play his harp in the park or take some guitar lessons. Steve tells Kayla that when she retires and it’s just them, they’ll still have their favorite way of being busy as they kiss. Kayla says they should probably get to St. Luke’s and lay out John’s memorabilia for the service. Steve stops and mentions that he hasn’t seen Marlena since they were all in John’s hospital room, so he doesn’t know what to say to her. Kayla urges him not to feel guilty as Marlena doesn’t blame him. Roman comes over and assures that no one blames Steve and they are all grateful for what he did to save Bo. Steve says he appreciates that. Kayla asks Roman where Kate is. Roman says she’s at the hospital with Philip and she’s been too worried to leave his side. Roman assures that Kate wouldn’t miss John’s funeral so she will meet them there. Roman states that John was too important to Kate and he imagines anyone who crossed paths with him would feel the same.
Paul and Eric sign the guestbook at John’s funeral. Paul comments on how he can’t believe how many people have already been there. Eric says many of them didn’t even know John but were grateful for what he did for Salem and the world. Carrie and Belle look at the flowers that have been sent including an arrangement from Vivian Alamain and another from John’s father Timothy. Belle says that Timothy unfortunately had hip surgery the day before so he won’t be able to be there. They see another from Sami and Sydney. Belle mentions sending flowers to Sydney but she hasn’t heard from Sami. Belle admits it might be kind of selfish but she’s glad Sami isn’t there. Carrie guesses things are awkward between them. Belle says the last thing she’d want is another scene like they had in EJ’s hospital room. Carrie relates to Sami chasing the man she loved for years and feels that Sami has no right to be upset about Belle being with her ex and says at least now, she knows exactly how it was for her. Arianna and Tate head for the church. Arianna stops and says she’s really glad she’s there but cries that she also hates that she’s there. Tate says he knows the feeling. Arianna mentions not knowing there wouldn’t be a coffin and feels it’s creepy and sad to know John’s ashes are in the urn. Arianna and Tate look around but don’t see Will. Brady then arrives and greets them. Tate asks how Rachel is doing. Brady admits she’s not great and was really reluctant to come, but figured she would honor his Grandfather by being there. Tate asks if Kristen is there. Brady says that Kristen thought Marlena might flip out if she came, so she stayed at home. Brady asks if Tate’s ready to do this together. Arianna tells him to go ahead as she’ll be okay. Brady goes over and hugs Marlena as he and Tate join her, Belle, and Carrie. Steve, Kayla, and Roman arrive as well. Marlena thanks Steve for bringing John’s mementos and says they really do capture his spirit. Steve feels it’s the least he could do. Steve cries that he could never tell Marlena how sorry he is. Marlena tells him not to do this as he knows there’s nothing he could’ve done to stop John from saving Bo as that’s just who he was. Steve hugs Marlena as he breaks down crying. Paul, Andrew, and Eric look over the table of John’s mementos. They talk about John’s spy missions over the years. Andrew calls John more of a badass than one could imagine. Paul calls John more of a hero than he could imagine and says they were all lucky to have known and loved him. Paul calls finding out he was John’s son the greatest gift he had ever been given. Johnny and Chanel arrive. Johnny greets Rachel but she hurries away. Johnny comments to Chanel about Rachel being really weird around him lately. Chanel suggests she’s just feeling down about John as they were really close. Paulina, Abe, and Julie arrive to greet Marlena. Julie calls John a bright light in all of their lives. Cat Green arrives and keeps her distance. Marlena and Brady join Rachel and talk about John’s love of baseball as Rachel recalls attending a Cubs game with him. Belle asks Carrie if she’s the one who ends up alone in her analogy. Carrie says she didn’t say that but it’s not like her and EJ are the perfect match. Carrie asks if Belle honestly thinks it could work. Belle admits she doesn’t know as she’s been conflicted about it since the beginning and now even more because she thinks John would really hate it. Brady comes over and agrees that he definitely would. Cat walks past Shane and acknowledges him as “director”. Paulina shows Julie photos of Eli and Lani’s babies on her phone. Julie calls it wonderful to think about their grandbabies on a difficult day like this. Paulina realizes this is Julie’s first funeral since Doug. Julie assures that she needs to be there and that Doug would want her to be there for John and Marlena. Arianna tells Tate that it’s nice to hear everyone talking about John. Tate calls it the one good thing about days like today. Arianna guesses she had no reason to be nervous. Rachel comes over and says it’s her first funeral too so Arianna suggests they stick together. Tate introduces Rachel to Arianna. Rachel asks if she is Tate’s new girlfriend since he and Holly broke up but Arianna clarifies that they are cousins. Julie questions Cat being there. Paulina reminds her that Cat works for Marlena. Julie greets Cat and brings up her having a very interesting day as Jennifer told her all about her skydiving experience. Cat states that Chad was a really good sport about that. Julie says that he’s still stumbling around thanks to her brilliant idea. Cat says it was actually his idea. Julie remarks that she’s just glad Jack and Jennifer had left before she got there. Kayla signs the guestbook as Shane and Roman talk about how Kimberly is doing. They talk about John always being part of the family. Kayla doesn’t know how they are going to tell Bo. Roman explains that they didn’t want to overwhelm him. Kayla says that Hope is with Bo and that Shawn is on his way, so hopefully he will get there in time.
Paulina comments that the service will be starting soon. Chanel talks about how hard it must be for Abe since he and John were friends forever. Johnny goes to see if they need any help setting up. Julie tells Tate that she’s so sorry he lost his Grandfather. Julie comments on having things of John’s, so Tate brings up the necklace that meant so much to Julie. Julie is grateful for Tate telling her what really happened. Tate admits it wasn’t his place but Julie points out that without him, she never would’ve found out. Cat goes over to tell Marlena how sorry she is about John. Marlena thanks Cat for holding things down at work, but says she should be back in a few days. Kayla questions her going back so soon. Marlena wants to stay busy and doesn’t think it would be fair to the other doctors. Cat encourages her to take care of herself. Marlena says she’ll be fine and thanks them. Eric finishes a prayer for strength as Roman joins him. Eric talks about John always being there for him. Roman understands that for a lot of years, John was the only parent Eric had and he loved him. Roman knows John would be proud and grateful to have Eric standing up for him today as they hug.
