THIS STILL NEEDS EXTENSIVE EDITING!

uncle lucas. When did you get in? About an hour ago. We’re so glad you’re here. I’m so sorry. Me too. Maxie: It was really nice of cody to ask you to help him in the stables today. Promise me when you get home, no fighting with your sister? I promise, mom.

[ Crying ] Alright.

[ Speaks indistinctly ] How are we gonna do this? I don’t know. But we will. Yeah.

[ Cellphone rings ] Oh. I’m sorry, I’m sorry. Hello? Elizabeth? Hey. I didn’t call you so you would come over. I just wanted you to know what happened. Well, what did happen? Last night’s storm must have knocked it down.

[ Sighs ] Oh, god. My mom told me that aunt ruby had this made. I didn’t know that. Yeah, it was hand-painted. I mean, the thing lasted for decades. I can handle this. The funeral is soon. Why don’t you go be with your family? Today of all days, you know? I can paint you a new sign. It can be something similar or you can pick something new. No, no, you don’t have to do that. Really. I would be honored. Really? Yeah. Yeah. Kelly’s means so much to this community. Just like bobbie did. Just like she always will. Hey, there you are. I’m sorry. I, um, I had to take care of something. Is everything okay? It will be. Yeah. How you doing, mom? I’m taking it minute by minute. You can take it second by second if you need to. I know I am. Did I tell you how good it is to see you? Once or twice. Hey, I’m gonna check in with the priest and make sure he’s got everything set. Okay? Yeah. Thank — thank you. Okay. Are you ready, mom? No. We’re here for you, mom. And I’m here for you, too. All of you, you know?

[ Sighs ] Um…okay. Okay. Yeah.

[ Theme music playing ]

Hey. All good? Yeah. Everything’s set. Thanks for doing that. Absolutely. Are you kidding? I just… I wish I could do more for all of you. I am so sorry. Thank you. Thank you. How are you doing? I’m sorry. That was a pretty dumb question to ask. Um… your mom was an incredible person. I know lulu thought really highly of her. My mom felt the same about lulu. Thank you guys for coming. Oh, come on, where else would we be? Yeah. Hey. Hey. How are you holding up? I know it’s a dumb question, but… um… I’m hanging in there. I loved bobbie. I’m gonna miss her. Me too. Me too.

[ Sighs ] Bobbie’s with barbara jean and tony now. I know that should give me comfort. But you wish she were here. So much. Bobbie always said she felt like bj and uncle tony were her guardian angels. I feel that way, too. You do? Yeah, especially with bj. Sometimes I have what I feel is a memory, but I know it can’t be. I wasn’t even conscious. What kind of memory? Being in the hospital. Uncle tony listening to bj’s heart in my chest. I mean, it feels…so real. I can even feel the weight of his head on my chest. I think you do remember. How? Well, doctors and nurses, they tell us this all the time, don’t they? I’m sure bobbie would have agreed that even if the patient is out, they’re not unaware of their surroundings. That’s why they encourage us to talk to them. Yeah. Tony did listen to that beautiful heart of yours. What a blessing that you carry that moment with you. Should we go in? Yeah. Sorry I’m late. Monica wasn’t feeling well and it took me a minute to convince her to stay home. Okay, I’m just… I’m glad you’re here. Of course I’m here. I loved bobbie very much. And I know that you loved her even more. I’m going to miss your mother so incredibly much. Thank you so much for offering to give the eulogy. I mean, it means so much to us. She was like a sister to me. I just hope I can do her justice. You will. Trina: Hey. I’m so sorry about your grandmother. Thank you. We weren’t technically related, but bobbie was always good to me. Bobbie was good to everyone. Unless you got on her bad side, then watch out. Loyal to the core. Sounds like somebody else I know. Carly. Yes. I’m so sorry for your loss. It’s port charles’s loss, really. Thank you. And I’m really glad that you were helping my mom handle luke’s affairs. Well, I don’t think your mom thought it was helping. I think she thought I was just getting in the way.

[ Laughs ] I’m really glad you were there. Then I am too. Your mother was a force to be reckoned with. Fiercely loyal to the people she loved. Luke especially. I had admired her immensely for that. Uh, no, I am not getting into it with you today. Not here, not today. That’s not why I approached you. It’s not? Whatever’s going on between us, bobbie transcends that. Yes, she does. Luke loved his sister. She was his ride — ride or die. And he was hers. So how about you and I, just for today, we call a truce for bobbie? For bobbie. I never pegged you as the religious type. I’m not. I’m honoring bobbie’s spirit, which was incandescent. She was an angel on this earth. The way she helped me through all that… kiefer stuff. It was a nightmare and I wouldn’t have gotten through it without her. That goes for both of us. Bobbie: My father physically abused me, and eventually I pulled myself out of that pit and I became a nurse and I got married. And it was respectable, except my husband beat me, too. I’m sorry. It had become a pattern, but I didn’t recognize it. But how could I possibly have not known that? We all do the best we can. And now more than ever, your daughter needs that smart, positive, independent woman to look up to.

[ Sighs ] A good lesson for all of us. Pay it forward. Hey, what are you up to? Uh… I was — I’m trying to jot something down to say. I speak for a living. So let me ask you something. Okay. Why is it someone that I cared so much about… I’m just coming up empty?

[ Sighs ] Anna, do you know that woman? No, I don’t recognize her at all. It’s not really a surprise, though, is it? Given the amount of patients and people that bobbie helped over the years, we can’t possibly know them all.

Keep life simple god, we are gathered here today as friends and family of our loved one who departed from this world recently and came into your presence. Let the love that you showered upon bobbie during her life fill this service. Help us to learn how to love others unconditionally, as bobbie did when she was with us here on earth. In jesus’ name, we pray. Amen. Amen. Amen. When I first met bobbie, I was just a candy striper, and she was a nurse at general hospital. And over the years, we went through an awful lot together. We were not just sisters-in-law. We were friends, real friends, the kind who would always show up for each other. And getting to know bobbie, getting to be in her orbit was truly an honor because she touched so many lives. I can feel the love in the room that she shared with you. And I think that it’s fair to say that — that bobbie spencer was someone who really led with her heart. And she — she loved without the obstruction of skepticism. I also believe that she was the most unfailingly positive person that I’ve ever met in my life. I mean, she always had a smile on, right? For everyone, no matter what kind of day she was having. But also, she was not afraid to fight for the things that she believed in. I think when we were young, she certainly had the tendency to fight with people. But I think that changed as she got older and she began to fight for people. She had a knack of seeing the good in absolutely everyone. Even if she had to dig really deep to find it. Do you know how special that is? How rare that is? And we all got to experience it. We got to experience her. And bobbie spencer was an experience.

[ Laughs ] One that I will truly miss. I’m, uh… I’m at a loss for words… which is, uh, rare for me. How do you memorialize somebody as complicated as bobbie? Hell. Look at her friends. The aztec princess over there. Ragtag lawyer like me and… fitness guru richard simmons.

[ Light laughter ] Bobbie was the best of everything. She was kind. She was sweet. Generous. She was a nurse. I loved her. It’s only today that I realized that we were meant to be best friends, and she did that. I’m gonna miss you, bobbie… with everything I got. It’s no secret that bobbie grew up with a lot of trauma. But instead of letting that break her or hold her back, she harnessed it. She took all of that negative energy and she turned it into strength and wisdom and ultimately into something healing because that’s who bobbie was. She was a healer. She helped me through some really difficult times, and I know for a fact I’m not the only one. You can ask anyone at the hospital. You can ask anyone in this church, and if you were new or lost or just struggling to find your path, who was the first person to offer their hand to help? All: Bobbie. Right. Bobbie. It’s a legacy I will do my very best to continue. And I hope to make her proud. I want to thank you… for being here today. My mom was a wonderful woman. We had a very unique relationship in that we didn’t meet until we were adults. I mean, don’t get me wrong, my mom was A…wonderful mother, but she wasn’t the mother who raised me. And she wasn’t the mother to check for monsters under the bed, you know? She was the mother who mentored me and who understood me… …who made room in her heart for me and taught me how to make room in mine. When I came to port charles, I was a mess. I was a schemer and… not in a good place. And, um, there were two people who changed that in me, and, um, bobbie was one of them. I didn’t realize how powerful true acceptance was. I mean, forgiveness, you know, I mean, bobbie gave me that, but acceptance, you know? She said I was her daughter and that I was a spencer and that she was going to love me and that she would believe in me no matter what. She said she was never gonna take my crap, but she was always gonna be by my side. She was.

[ Sighs ] Look, I know on the surface, you know, we were very different, but, um, you didn’t have to scratch too deep to see that we were very much alike. And I see her every time I look at my kids. I do. I mean, the way you stand up for yourselves, the way you accept and care about the people around you, how you try so hard not to go after the bad, but you go after the good. I mean, I’m still working on that one, but I’m gonna keep trying, mom. I love you, bobbie jean spencer. The world’s a very different place without you.

Should we head out? I’d like to stay a little bit longer, if that’s okay. Yeah, mom, take all the time you need. I’ll be right back. Hi. I saw you at the back of the chapel. Um, were you friends with bobbie? More like we worked together. Uh, angela brighton, a reporter for the ap. I’m doing a story on your friend. What kind of story? I’m so sorry. Thank you, felix. Your mother was one of the best people I ever met. Yeah, I thought she was pretty great, too. She was greater than great. Keep thinking about the nurses’ ball, how much fun I had performing with her every year. Bobbie was tireless. The choreographer would physically leave the building and she’d be like, “we don’t need him. Let’s do it one more time.”

[ Both laughing ] I’m sure everybody loved that. Yeah, but we did because she wasn’t annoying or obnoxious about it. She was just her usual upbeat and energetic self. Yeah, she wanted everybody to be their best. Every year, something would inevitably go wrong convincing us it wasn’t gonna work this time, but bobbie would insist that it would. And, of course, it did. A real team player… your mom. I’m really gonna miss her. We all are. Yeah. Thank you for sharing that with me. Thank you for sharing her with us. It was a beautiful service. Thank you. And thank you for being such a great friend to my mom. She was really lucky to have you. I’m the lucky one. Hey, I’m — I’m sorry to interrupt. Oh, you never interrupt. Okay. Hello. I’m very sorry for your loss. Were you a friend of my mom’s? Maxie: Um, yes. And we have something important to tell you. Carly: Okay, I don’t mean to offend you, but I don’t want the press making a mockery of my mother’s death. I just can’t do that. And I completely understand that. Just hear her out, carly. Trust me. Okay? Yeah. First off, your mother told me a lot about you. Wait, back up. How do you know bobbie? I was recently stationed at the ap bureau in amsterdam, which is when I started writing the profile on bobbie and the work she was doing there. The work she was doing there? She was helping settle her brother’s affairs. She was doing that, but she was also devoting her time to a charity organization. What kind of organization? A rescue one. Your mother was helping young women escape human trafficking.

Human trafficking? That’s dangerous. I’m sorry. How did my mother get involved in this? Don’t worry. She was volunteering at a nonprofit. She wasn’t out on the front lines, but she did use her time and resources to help women all over europe travel to the states and apply for asylum. So they could get a better life. Just like bobbie did. Yeah. Your mother did confide in me about her teenage years. When she was a prostitute. I also know that she was too young to make that choice. Bobbie herself was trafficked. Of course, they weren’t calling it that back then. But it’s finally being acknowledged for the abuse that it was. Bobbie told me she had a reckoning with her past over the last few years. She did. She was using her pain to heal others. Of course she did. Your mother’s volunteer work played a small but pivotal role in helping those women escape, which is why I wanted to write the article. So she agreed to speak with you? Unfortunately, she couldn’t say much without risking exposing both the victims and her contact. Contact? There was a point person within the organization that aided in the actual journey to the U.S. However, right before she passed, bobbie did tell me that she was in the process of arranging asylum for someone. Is that usually very complicated? Normally, no. She would just find a safe place for them to stay while the paperwork was being completed. But in this case, she was really worried for the girl’s safety. People were looking for her, so she was trying to find a way to get her to the states sooner. Do you know if the woman got here? I wish I knew. I’m sorry, I, um, I need some air. Excuse me.

[ Sighs ] Oh, my god! Oh, my god. Are you okay? I knew there was something going on. Why would it take so long for my mom to settle luke’s affairs? Why?! Leave it to bobbie to find a way to save the world as her side hustle. What about the latest victim? I mean, does she escape? Does she even know my mom passed away? Well, who would we ask? Without bobbie’s contact, we have no lead to go off of. We have one. Thank you for coming. I know it’s been a long day. Please come in. Well, especially for you. It was a lovely tribute to your mother. I hope you found some peace in it. I did, yeah. I’m — I’m really glad you were there. Well…luke thought the world of your mother and I wouldn’t have missed it. At least they’re together now. Ha. I’d like to think so. So what’s this about? I need your help.

I know there’s nothing that I can say that can make this easy for you. But I love you so much. If maxie makes it through this, frisco and I have you and tony to thank.

[ Chuckles ] Mom, what are you doing out here in the cold? I was just thinking about bobbie and how she was always there for me and never expected anything in return. I hope she knows that I would have done anything for her. I’m sure she did. I know she did. You have really kind eyes. Has anyone ever told you that? Empathy is part of the job. Well, I’m gonna walk home. Are you sure? This is yours. I can give you a ride. No, I just want to spend some time by myself. Okay. Text me when you get there? Okay. I love you, sweet girl. I love you, too, mom. You know you’re my “everything good,” right? Just like georgie and james and bailey lu are yours. I know. It was nice to meet you. You as well. You and your mother have a really special bond. Yeah. She’s the best. I feel the same way about mine. Wow. Here I thought I was taking something off of bobbie’s plate by going to amsterdam. Little did I know, she had a whole other platter. Human trafficking? Yeah. I mean, it makes sense, given my mom’s history and her complicated relationship with ruby and luke. Luke loved your mother. I know. And he went above and beyond to always protect her. Yes. He, um, protected her in his own way. Come on. I mean, he didn’t go to the police. He could have stopped it, tracy. Back then, the person who would have gotten into trouble is your mother. They didn’t know better then. They did…deep down. And if they didn’t, they sure as hell should have. I can’t argue with you there. I just want to know that the woman my mom was trying to help is safe. I can see this is important to you. It is. It is because I didn’t get a chance to say goodbye to my mom. And I just want to finish what she started. What can I do to help? Well, I mean, you were with her for a month. So did, um, did she mention her contact at this organization? I told you. I knew nothing about this other life that she was leading. But did a name keep popping up? Something that she just passed off as other business? She didn’t confide anything. She did mention some cabin in ontario that luke had, but really, she just couldn’t wait to get rid of me. Now I know why. Well, did she go off on her own a lot? She did all the time, and actually, I — I followed her and she was at a cafe up the street from luke’s, and I think she went there often. Well, what was the name of the cafe? You’re going to amsterdam… uh-huh. …Tonight? Yeah. Mom, grandma’s funeral was only a few hours ago. Aren’t you exhausted? Well, if I get on the overnight flight, I can sleep on the plane. And I can get there late tomorrow. Sounds like you’ve made up your mind about this. I have. Well, then I’m going with you. No, no, no, no. Carly, it could be dangerous. Look, I’m only going there so I can find my mom’s contact at the volunteer organization. I’m also gonna need you to look out for donna and avery, too. Okay? Of course. But are you sure you need to do this? Guys. Come on. My mom’s upbringing was less than ideal. Okay? There was a lot of pain, a lot of abuse, and she worked really hard to break this cycle. But clearly, she was searching for peace. And if I can help her find that, even in death… I’m so proud of you. Yeah, I’m proud of you, too. But nobody will be prouder than bobbie.

I really admire your dedication coming all this way to finish your article on bobbie. It was totally worth the trip. After hearing the tributes at the funeral and listening to you and your mom talk about bobbie, I have a more complete picture of who she was. I can do better than that. How so? Well, there are countless people in port charles who bobbie has helped. I think you should talk to some of them. I would love to hear from anyone who would share their memories of bobbie with me. Okay. How long are you here for? My flight’s supposed to leave tomorrow night. Tell you what, meet me back here tomorrow morning and I promise you won’t be disappointed. Do you have room for one more? Oh, felicia. What — I spoke with drew, and he said that you had a lead on bobbie’s contact in amsterdam. I’d like to come with you. Oh, um, I, you know, that — that won’t be necessary. So what’s your plan? To camp out at the cafe and ask every person who enters if they know who bobbie’s associate is? I haven’t got that far yet. Let me help you. I-I know that I’ve been out of the P.I. Game for a minute, and you and I have never been particularly close. But, bobbie — her life gave me meaning. And she literally gave life to my daughter. I owe her everything, carly, and I’d really like to give her this one last gift. Well, we better get going.
