Victoria: Thanks. I’d love a glass of wine, but I’m exhausted. From the flight and from seeing claire in jail. It would put me right to sleep, and I just– I want to stay sharp right now.

Cole: Yeah, yeah, I know what you mean. This whole– this whole trip has just been surreal.

Victoria: Yeah, but, um, seeing her did help to clarify certain things.

Cole: Jordan was running the show, not claire.

Victoria: You know, the emotional abuse that was heaped on her since the time she was five years old. That’s just heartbreaking.

Cole: If the damage that was done can’t be undone–

Victoria: Okay, just– just stop, okay? Let’s just– let’s not go there. One monumental hurdle at a time, right?

Michael: Victoria. Cole howard?

Cole: Michael. It’s been a minute.

Michael: I’ll say. It’s good to see you again.

Cole: Yeah, you too. You too. Have a seat.

Michael: I didn’t realize you were in town.

Michael: Yeah, well, under less than congenial circumstances, I’m afraid.

Victoria: Thank you for meeting us so late, michael. Would you like something to drink? Some coffee or maybe something stronger?

Michael: Oh, thank you. But I get the feeling I need to keep my wits about me.

Victoria: Great minds.

Cole: I’ll tell you what, I’ll get some decaf. And then we’re gonna tell you a shocking story. And after that, we’re going to ask you to do something even more shocking.

Victor: That woman is a damn menace. Walking around free, mocking everyone. Tormenting you. This has got to stop. It’s got to stop now.

Nikki: Playing the music that I used to strip to. I mean, she’s trying to bring me down in shame. I have no shame over what I did when I was young. I– so I danced at the bayou. So what? This woman, jordan, has so much hatred for me. Violated my sobriety, and I– I had never even met her.

Victor: Sweetheart, this woman cannot hurt you because of your past. I won’t allow it.

Nikki: I wish it were that simple.

Victor: I’m gonna find her, come hell or high water. I’m gonna find that damn woman before she can do more damage.

Michael: Oh, my god. How are the two of you doing? Emotionally, I mean.

Cole: It’s really unsettling. Just knowing that jordan is out there somewhere still– still on the run.

Michael: There’s a lot of history, there’s a lot of bad blood that apparently inspired these acts of violence. On top of which, you two are being forced to relive the agony you experienced when your infant daughter passed away. Still, you’ve got to be wondering if this young woman claire grace could actually be your child. I mean, is jordan capable of just stealing a baby from nicu, and– and taking her, rather than leave her with a family she felt was undeserving?

Victoria: We met with her.

Michael: Claire?

Victoria: She agreed to do a dna test, and that way we can know for sure one way or the other.

Michael: Oh, great. Great. At least you’ll have some peace of mind. How’d you talk her into it?

Cole: Well, claire’s pretty freaked out about being in jail.

Michael: Yeah. Yeah.

Cole: She’s facing serious charges.

Michael: They’ll all add up. She could go away for decades.

Victoria: We told her that we would find her a lawyer. Someone who could possibly get her out on– on a bond.

Michael: Yeah, well, you’re gonna have to find somebody good. Wait. Me. You want me to defend her?

Victoria: Michael. I know.

Michael: Just stop. Stop, victoria, just for one moment, and think about what you’re asking of me. That woman terrorized your family, she blindly obeyed her mentally ill aunt who obviously spent years planning these crimes. She didn’t even question what was going on, from everything I’ve heard. And now– now you, one of her victims is proposing to hire a top-tier attorney to represent the woman.

Cole: So, you can’t do it?

Michael: I didn’t say that. If there’s a lawyer on the planet who can get her released on bond, it’s me. But are you willing to risk it? Claire’s being at large, maybe partnering up with jordan again. Presuming I succeed, what happens then? Do you have a plan?

Victoria’s voice: I am not your mother. I am not your mother. I am not your mother.

[ Panting ] Having diabetes can raise a lot of questions.

Announcer: Additional sponsorship provided by…

Michael: If I succeed in getting her released, what happens next? What kind of leeway are you planning to give this young woman? And does that answer depend on whether or not she turns out to be your biological child?

Victoria: I mean, honestly, we– we haven’t thought that far ahead.

Cole: So what would you recommend? Legally speaking?

Michael: The first step would be a comprehensive psychological evaluation and treatment. And even if I can’t get claire exonerated, I can have her admitted to a psychiatric facility. Which would actually put her out on the street in less time than a prison sentence. Do you truly believe that she could be your child? Or is she just someone who helped jordan in her abduction and torture scheme? In which case you owe her nothing. And even if she does turn out to be your daughter as– as tragic as that situation would be, claire’s an adult. She terrorized people she believes to be her family. She’s not blameless in all this.

Victoria: I hear you, michael. I hear you loud and clear. But I need to know the truth.

Michael: Cole, where do you stand in this?

Cole: Frankly, I don’t know what to think, but it seems pretty obvious to me that jordan brainwashed claire. She filled her head with lies and irrational hatred towards this family.

Victoria: Michael, please just talk to her. Would you please consider defending her? Maybe you can gain some insight into who she is that we– that we couldn’t see, because of all of these horrible things that have happened.

Claire: Aunt jordan.

Jordan: Ssh. You be quiet. Don’t you give me away. It was pretty difficult getting in here. More difficult than it was when I got into the maternity ward when you were born.

Claire: It’s not safe for you to be here.

Jordan: You’re weak, claire. That’s why you were caught. But I’m not like you. I’m strong and savvy and determined to win. And I thought that I raised you to understand how the world works. But you’re not that person anymore. You’ve let me down. And now, mother and father will think that poor little claire is broken and can be managed. And they won’t fear you anymore.

[ Claire gasping ]

Victor: My baby, what you need now is some rest and quiet. Eh? You need to recover from that ordeal. From a very stressful day.

Nikki: Yes, it was. Those awful phone calls and finding out that victoria went to see claire in jail.

Victor: And then you went to an aa meeting.

Nikki: I’m so glad I did.

Victor: And I’m very glad you liked it, and you had support, all right? So now you just tell me what you want me to do, and I’ll do it, and I’ll get it for you.

Nikki: All I need is your love.

Victor: Well…

Nikki: Look, it’s been a very exhausting day for both of us. Why don’t you go on up, and I’ll be up shortly. I just want to make some tea.

Victor: Come here. Whatever makes you happy, okay?

Rsv is out there.

Michael: Have you talked to victor and nikki about this? About hiring me as claire’s attorney in exchange for a paternity test?

Victoria: Not yet.

Michael: Because?

Victoria: Because I assume that they’re gonna try to talk us out of it.

Michael: Yeah, well, that should tell you something.

Cole: We feel strongly about this.

Victoria: Look, getting her to take a dna test is the only way to resolve this. And the only way she’s going to do that is if we hire her a really good lawyer. Look, we’re hoping that that would be you.

Michael: I believe that everyone accused of a crime deserves a competent defense. That has been the bedrock belief of my career. But what if this turns out to be a trap?

Cole: How do you mean?

Michael: For all we know claire and jordan are back in communication. Maybe they’re banking on your kindness and your empathy. So when claire is acquitted, she can go right back to doing her best to getting into your good graces. She’s already made inroads or we wouldn’t be having this conversation.

Victoria: I wouldn’t go that far.

Cole: Michael, we– we’re not naive.

Michael: I never said you were, but jordan is a good actress, she conned nikki without too much trouble. And claire’s conned the two of you, she can always play up her pathos of being abandoned so that you two let down your guards. It’s a pretty clever backup plan. She and jordan can go in for the kill. And might even succeed this time.

Cole: Listen, I want to know the truth as much as you do. But how do we even know if we can– we can trust claire? I mean, what if she leaves, and she– she goes out on the run and she meets up with jordan? I mean, she could change her mind about taking the test, and– and then we’d be dealing with a real fiasco.

Michael: Perhaps she left something at the house with her dna on it. A hairbrush, a lipstick? A cup she drank from and left in the sink?

Cole: You know, that could actually make things much cleaner, and we wouldn’t have to rely on her to cooperate.

Victoria: No, that house. I can’t imagine ever setting foot in that house again.

Cole: You don’t have to, I’ll do it.

[ Phone chimes ]

Nikki: “She ne’er shall force an echo more, thrilling to think, poor child of sin! It was the dead… who groaned within.” My dry eye’s made me a burning,

Adam: Hey, nick.

[ Nick sighs ] Do you have a minute?

Nick: Not really.

Adam: Okay, well, I’m just wondering what’s been going on, where– where’s everybody been lately?

Nick: What do you mean?

Adam: I’ve been trying to get in touch with victoria for the last few days about the bosworth deal. She hasn’t returned any of my messages and then I realized dad hasn’t been around, nikki hasn’t been around or you. So what’s going on? It’s as if the newmans suddenly went awol.

Nick: Just, uh, dealing with a personal matter.

Adam: Oh, I see. A personal family matter that doesn’t include me?

Nick: Yeah.

Sally: Oh, I’m sorry. Oh.

[ Nick groans ] What’s wrong?

[ Footsteps approaching ]

Nikki: Good morning, darling.

Victoria: Good morning, mom.

Nikki: There’s tea.

Victoria: Oh, thank you.

Nikki: How are you feeling?

Victoria: You know, I came here to ask you that. After the– the misery of being in that house.

Nikki: I’m doing my best to put it behind me.

Victoria: So soon, mom? After that horrible woman stole your sobriety. I mean, it was cruel. That’s not something that you get over so easily.

Nikki: Believe me, I know it. But I went to a meeting yesterday and I’m planning on going to another one today. And every day for a while. You know, I can never forgive what those horrible women did, but I will not let them defeat me.

Victoria: That’s exactly what I wanted to hear you say.

Victoria: Okay, enough about me. I wanna hear about claire. What on earth were you thinking going to see her?

Victor: That’s certainly something I’d like to know.

Victoria: Well, uh, I’m– I’m glad that cole and I went. It was overwhelming. To say the least. But we learned a lot. Including how jordan systematically tried to destroy claire’s personality for her own selfish reasons. Which is why she turned out the way that she did.

Victor: So what exactly did this jordan woman do to claire?

Victoria: Dad, I promise I’ll tell you everything. But right now I want you both to know that cole and i met with michael about defending claire.

Victor: What?

Victoria: I debated telling you, but michael convinced me that I had to.

Victor: Girl, come to your senses. This girl just brutalized you and your whole family. Why the hell have you decided now to want to defend her?

Claire: Who are you?

Michael: Michael baldwin. An attorney hired by victoria newman on an exploratory basis.

Claire: What does that mean?

Michael: I haven’t decided to take your case yet. If I did, I’d start by setting up a bond hearing with the judge and trying to get you released on bail. I can’t guarantee I’d prevail. But trust me when I tell you, I’m your best shot at having a life again. Whether that happens is up to you, miss grace, and how you respond in the next few minutes.

Claire: I understand. I’m grateful for any help I can get. Just tell me what I have to do. My frequent heartburn had me

Announcer: The young and the restless will continue. 12 days of gifting

Nick: Nothing’s wrong. She just startled me.

Adam: I saw your face. Are you injured?

Nick: No.

Adam: Are you sure it doesn’t have something to do with that personal family matter, nick?

Nick: Well, that’s none of your business, adam.

Adam: Okay, whatever you say, brother. How are you doing?

Sally: I’m good. You?

Adam: Same as the last time we talked.

Nick: Okay. Have a good morning.

Sally: Nick.

[ Adam clears throat ]

Sally: I wonder what that was about.

Adam: Uh, probably not enough coffee, I guess.

Sally: Yeah, that seemed like more than just not wanting to be around the two of us.

Adam: Well, newman family business takes its toll. Something is up. They’ve all been mia at work lately. And when I dared to ask him about it, I can tell that I struck a nerve.

Sally: I’m sorry.

Adam: No, don’t be. I assume I will find out what the big mystery is soon enough. But in the meantime, you did not answer my question. Good is a place filler. You tell me how you really doing, now that nick’s gone, you don’t have to dance around it.

[ Sally clears throat ]

Sally: I’m fine. How are you doing? I mean, what have you been up to since the last time we saw each other?

Adam: Our kiss good night at the foot of the stairs, well, to be honest with you, I’ve been mostly thinking about you. A lot.

Victoria: Claire’s story, I mean, it– it just seems so confusing at times. And frankly… it was so appalling and I don’t know what parts of it to believe. But claire seems convinced that these things, that they did take place.

Nikki: Without a shred of evidence. There is no confirmation that you and cole are her parents.

Victoria: Look, mom, jordan raised her since birth. Claire had no reason to ever doubt her. She never asked her for proof. That’s how indoctrinated she was.

Victor: But why would you involve michael baldwin in this?

Victoria: She agreed to take a dna test if we got her a good lawyer.

Nikki: What if michael doesn’t want to have anything to do with it? What if she goes back on her word?

Victoria: We are prepared for that. Cole went back to the lake house to find something with her dna. Michael suggested that we do that.

Nikki: You know, you could have found a less gifted attorney. Unless, of course, you want claire to be roaming around free.

Victoria: It’s funny, mom. Michael said the exact same thing.

Victor: Why in the world didn’t you listen to him?

Victoria: Daddy, I couldn’t let it go. I feel very compelled to help claire. I heard her story. I saw the look in her eyes of pain and loneliness. You know, she’s a victim in this too.

Nikki: You know what, victoria, I’m sorry, I cannot accept this. I cannot see claire as anything other than the monster she is.

Michael: Let’s start by laying down a few ground rules. First and foremost, tell me the truth. Can you do that?

Claire: Yes.

Michael: Secondly, I’m aware that you agreed to take a dna test in exchange for help with your defense, and I trust that still holds, because if–

Claire: I’ll keep my word, mr. Baldwin.

Michael: Thank you. What was that first rule?

Claire: Be honest with you.

Michael: Excellent. And I’ll do the same.

Claire: What is it that you want to know before you decide whether you’ll be my lawyer?

Michael: Did jordan try to contact you after your arrest?

Claire: Only in my nightmares.

Michael: Walk me through everything that took you to this point. No sugar coating, no leaving out important details. Once I’ve heard it all, I will make the determination on whether or not to represent you.

Claire: I grew up trained for one thing. To hate my mother and father and all the newmans.

Victoria: I’m not condoning or excusing claire’s actions. But she needs help. She doesn’t deserve to do jail time.

Nikki: What if it turns out she’s not your daughter? Will you feel as kindly toward her then?

Victoria: Yes, regardless of how the test turns out, I would like for claire to have a better future, honestly.

Victor: Sweetheart, she’s a very troubled young woman. Comes from a family with enormous mental problems. What are you doing? Don’t go easy on her.

Nick: Hey, you’re back.

Victoria: Hi. Yes, I am.

Nick: How did your visit with claire go?

Victoria: I’m sure that you disapprove of me seeing her as well.

Nick: Look, I understand your desire to find the truth about claire. My concern is jordan who is still out there, and she’s very dangerous. If you try and pursue things with claire, you could get back on jordan’s radar. And none of us wants that.

Victoria: Well, that’s a chance that I’m willing to take, nick.

Nikki: Even if it means putting yourself and your family in danger?

Victoria: This is possibly my firstborn child that we’re talking about. I need answers. I– I can’t just let this go. I mean, if this is my baby, truly, I mean, it changes everything.

Nick: I get it. I do. And I’m not trying to start an argument with you.

Victoria: Oh, good. Because it’s one you won’t win.

Nick: Okay, how about you two? Mom, did you finally get a good night’s sleep?

Nikki: Oh, uh, I’m afraid it’s gonna be a while before that happens.

Nick: Well, you’ve had a much tougher road than the rest of us.

Victor: I admire your mother greatly, son. This whole ordeal was an enormous assault on her sobriety. And she withstood the assault. She looked it all right in the eye. I’m very proud of her. Life, diabetes, there’s no slowing down.

Michael: So, jordan’s main goal was punishing the newmans.

Claire: She drummed it into me ever since I was little. How cold and selfish they were. How undeserving of mercy or understanding. That we were gonna knock them off their high horse. And inflict as much pain as possible.

Michael: All because of her perception from afar of how they treated eve.

Claire: Her perception?

Michael: Victoria told me that jordan and her sister had been estranged for many years. She couldn’t possibly have known how the newmans treated eve.

Claire: I guess that’s right. But it didn’t faze her. Jordan was gonna pay them back if it was the last thing she ever did. And I was gonna help her because I was a wounded party too.

Michael: She convinced you that the newmans abandoned you.

Claire: I had no reason to believe otherwise. I’d been convinced that my parents found me unlovable from the minute I was born. That I was something to be discarded because of my connection to eve. But, aunt jordan, she saved me from being all alone in the world. She knew that I was special, even if no one else did.

Michael: She tore you down and then she built you up.

Claire: And in return, I was– I was more than happy to help her fulfill her life’s mission. But that meant I’d need to find an access point to the newman family. I’d– I’d have to train, be educated. I’d need to be smart and cunning and articulate and likable. All the things that would break down their defenses. And get me and jordan past their newman security and emotional walls.

Michael: And you did everything she instructed you to do without questions or reservations?

Claire: Every step of the way. I was a good little soldier. That got me a little praise, at least. It was the closest thing I ever had to a mother’s love. But then when I faced my real mom, and I looked her in the eye, I just wanted her to see me. I wanted her to know instinctively that i was her child. And that she and cole, they were gonna say that they were sorry. And they were gonna say that I deserved all the love that I missed out on. They made a dreadful mistake. They never ever should have given me up. But they didn’t say that. And they never will.

Victoria: Thank you.

Nick: Sure.

Victor: So…

Victoria: Are you actually going in today?

Victor: Yes, aren’t you?

Victoria: Of course.

Victor: Why did you act so surprised?

Victoria: Well, it’s just, um…

Nick: Mom, are you ready to jump back into newman media or do you want us to cover for you?

Nikki: Oh, that’s sweet of you, darling. But, um, I can just picture all the work that has piled up on my desk since I got on that plane with claire.

Victoria: Well, just let us know whatever you need. We’ll pitch in, and help you.

Nikki: Thank you, darling.

Victor: Okay, son, ready?

Nick: Yeah, let’s do it.

Victoria: All right. We’ll, uh– we’ll see you there. Mom… are you sure that you don’t need a little extra support?

Nikki: What are you suggesting?

Victoria: Someone trained to help you deal with everything that you’ve been going through.

Nikki: I’ll be going to my meetings.

Victoria: Uh, no, I– I mean, in addition to that. Look, I know, you are the strongest person that I know, by far. But sometimes it’s not enough to be determined. You know, there’s a part of me that is still an emotional wreck over what happened. So I can only imagine how you must be feeling right now.

[ Phone chimes] Mom, what– what is it?

Nikki: It’s nothing I can’t handle.

Victoria: Is it work?

Nikki: Victoria, don’t worry about it!

Victoria: Mom. Whatever’s going on, please don’t shut me out. Let me help you.

Sally: I have been thinking about you.

Adam: Like a lot?

Sally: Don’t push your luck, newman.

[ Adam chuckles ]

Adam: So, any conclusions?

Sally: Well, if you’re asking if I have… figured out what the night that the two of us spent together meant… I haven’T.

Adam: I see.

Sally: I mean, did it change things? Yeah. How could it not? You know, but is it right or smart for either of us to just make it more than it was? I mean, have we learned nothing?

Adam: Which lesson are you referring to? I mean, there’s been so many, it’s hard to keep track of them all.

Sally: Look, even if we did go down that road again, we would probably fail. And to put ourselves through that wringer again, we should know better than that, adam. Because of who we are. And what we had. And what we lost.

Adam: Hmm. The stakes are really high.

Adam: I agree. But the thing is… it– it might succeed in ways that we never expected. I mean, you have to know that that is– it’s possible, sally. The virus that causes shingles is sleeping…

Adam: I’m willing to leap off that cliff, hand in hand, into the unknown, with you if you are. And if we crash, you can hate me for the rest of my life and– and I will accept it.

Sally: Famous last words.

Adam: Well, I mean it. But maybe this time, fate will be on our side for once. And together we will soar. Can we at least have enough of a reset to try dinner? You know, this time where we actually eat? Maybe– maybe even lunch? A brownie. Come on. I’m easy. What do you say?

Sally: Sure.

[ Sally laughs ]

Claire: You don’t know the entire story.

Michael: Continue.

Claire: Turns out, what jordan had told me my entire life… it wasn’t true, none of it. My parents didn’t abandon me. She took me from them. She just blurted it out at the house in front of everyone. If jordan lied about that… what else could she have lied about? My entire life is meaningless.

Michael: Do you need a moment?

Claire: I spent so much of my life wanting to hurt my parents. Wanting to make them feel just some of what I had endured. But then… coming face to face with them, both of them at once… I couldn’t help but want something else. Something more. A real connection. And I know how impossible that sounds. But then to find out that… jordan had lied, that she had kidnapped me. She had robbed them. Just like she had robbed me. And it was all wrecked. I saved their lives in the end. But… I don’t see how they’ll ever forgive me. I just want to get out. And I wanna leave all of this, I wanna leave all of them behind.

Michael: I understand why you would feel that way.

Claire: So, mr. Baldwin… will you help me?

Jordan: So you think you’re so invincible? That you’ve won? That you can’t ever lose? Well, the high and mighty are going to fall. And they’re never gonna get back up. All for you, my sister. All for you.

Nikki: I’ve been getting texts and calls the last few days. Each more terrifying than the last.

Victoria: Texts from who? “Be silent in that solitude, which is not loneliness. For then the spirits of the dead who stood in life before thee are again in death around thee. And their will shall overshadow thee, be still.”

Nikki: Nice, huh?

Victoria: It’s an unknown sender. Do you think it’s jordan?

Nikki: That’s my guess.

Victoria: Oh, my god. That’s insane. We– we have to find her. I mean, we have to stop her!
