Abby: [ Stammers ]
Amanda: What the hell?
Abby: [ Exhales heavily ] Chance. Chance!
Jack: [ Laughs ] And what did you say to him?
Adam: Oh, I told him instead of our traditional thanksgiving gifts, we should just give out live turkeys this year. Let people keep them on their desks as pets.
Jack: I’m guessing he didn’t find that funny.
Adam: No, not at all. Not at all. No matter where you go, which company you work for, human resources does not have a sense of humor.
Jack: Yeah, but do we want an hr department that’s cracking jokes all day?
Adam: Oh, come on. How about one? Just a single witty remark from H.R. — Is that too much to ask?
Jack: [ Chuckling ] Yes.
Nate: I appreciate your offer to be a sounding board, but it’s a personal issue. I need to handle it on my own.
Victoria: Okay. Well, just so you know, if you need any advice at all, I am much better at solving other people’s problems than my own.
Nate: I will keep that in mind. What I really need is something to divert my attention, like an exciting new job to challenge me.
Victoria: Oh. Well, I happen to have just the thing for you.
Nate: Thank you again for the opportunity.
Victoria: You know what? You deserve it. We’re so lucky to have you. I am looking forward to seeing you take newman media and running with it and to raise the division to new heights.
Sally: You must be my replacement.
Chance: [ Breathing heavily ]
Abby: I’m so sorry.
Amanda: Help the lady find her shirt, devon. Did you rip it off and throw it over there by the stairs? Or did she peel it off teasingly?
Devon: Please don’t do that.
Abby: I’m so sorry. I’m sorry. Chance. Chance! Chance! If you think all pads are exactly the same…

Jack: Hey, nick.
Nick: Hey, jack.
Jack: Shame we didn’t get here earlier. You could have joined us for lunch.
Nick: Eh, I probably would have been lousy company anyway.
Adam: Mm-hmm. And that would be different than any other time how?
Jack: I assume you have seen the honeymooners since they got back from costa rica?
Nick: Yeah. Summer gave me a full report. She was practically glowing, especially when she talked about how much fun harrison had. But you know summer. She’s very fired up to be home and working at marchetti.
Jack: It is remarkable how positive summer is wherever she is. We are lucky to have her. She and kyle are doing an amazing job.
Adam: Yeah, some companies truly value their talented employees.
Nick: And some people know when to say goodbye. See you, jack.
Jack: See you nick. Okay, what was that all about?
Adam: Oh, just the usual newman nonsense.
Jack: Oh?
Adam: Look, why don’t we grab a table? I, uh, have a feeling that you invited me to lunch with a bigger agenda than finding out why nick and I are sniping at each other, so let’s just get to the point.
Victoria: We thought you’d be gone by now.
Sally: I had some things come up, and nick told me that i could take my time.
Victoria: I wasn’t aware of that.
Sally: Well, I didn’t think the new ceo was going to be starting until tomorrow. But welcome, nate.
Nate: Thanks. Um, I wasn’t scheduled to do more than on-boarding paperwork today. Guess I’m just a little excited to get started.
Sally: I know that feeling all too well. Well, I left, uh, hard copies of all of the new projects on the desk. Some of them we just started, but they all have really great potential. Unfortunately, others apparently did not share my vision.
Victoria: Sally, do you need any help with these boxes? I can call security and have them assist you to speed things along a little bit.
Sally: I’ve got it. Thanks. I’ve been through this before.
Victoria: Oh, I don’t doubt that.
Nate: I hope you realize it’s just business. I wasn’t looking to take your job. It just, um, worked out that way.
Sally: I know. It’s nothing personal on your part, and I have zero animosity towards you, nate. I truly wish you nothing but success.
Nate: I appreciate that. Same to you.
Victoria: Why don’t we introduce you to the rest of your staff while we give sally a chance to finish packing? I trust that you’ll be gone when we get back.
Sally: [ Exhales heavily ]
[ Door slams ]
Amanda: Really, devon? That’s what you want, the tall blonde?
Devon: Amanda, it just happened, okay? And I — we didn’t plan this. I didn’t know you were coming home.
Amanda: Oh, no, of course not. My presence was definitely unexpected and clearly unwanted.
Devon: It’s not like that.
Amanda: Mm, no? Then what’s it like?
Devon: No.
Amanda: Please tell me, devon.
Devon: I wish I could explain it to you.
Amanda: I wish you could, too, because I am standing here wondering what the hell is going on!
Devon: No — I’m wondering what the hell’s going on, too. I don’t have an explanation for what we did ’cause it was spontaneous. It just happened.
Amanda: You said that already.
Devon: I know I did. I just want a chance to talk to you about this so I can try and make sense of it, too.
Amanda: Okay. Okay. You want to talk? You know what? I think you’re right. Let’s talk this through. But first put the rest of your damn clothes on. I was taking my antidepressant daily,
Jack: Thank you. So, I have no dark, hidden agenda, if that’s what you’re implying. I just wanted to catch up with you, see how you’re doing now that you’ve had time to settle in at jabot.
Adam: Well, it’s been a rejuvenating experience. It’s been a breath of fresh air, and I’m grateful to you for the opportunity, jack.
Jack: I am thrilled to hear that, and your overall performance has been very impressive.
Adam: Well, thank you.
Jack: I have, though, in the last couple of weeks, noticed that you’re dealing with some pretty potent distractions.
Adam: [ Sighs ] Um, that is true. Starts with billy and victoria telling johnny that chelsea is his birth mother. I don’t know if you’re aware of that situation.
Jack: No, I hadn’t heard that.
Adam: Yeah. So, it’s been, uh, tough for johnny. And even worse — connor knows the truth now, too, so he’s been struggling with it.
Jack: I’m sure it’s been difficult for both boys.
Adam: Yeah, he’s been coming to terms with it over the last couple days. But, actually, johnny and him have been able to bond over that situation at a sleep over, apparently. But I want to stay vigilant, make sure he’s just not telling me what I want to hear.
Jack: And luckily chelsea provides another set of eyes to watch his behavior.
Adam: Um, well, that’s another problem, jack. Uh, there’s something going on with her. And I’m not privy to the information, but, uh, I’m worried about her.
Jack: Wait, nothing as serious as the rey rosales thing?
Adam: No, I don’t think she’s trying to hurt or frame anyone. I don’t think. She’s been erratic and she’s been unsteady lately. You know, these last few weeks, I thought that she was making progress and she was getting better and then halloween night she just stopped communicating with me altogether and I’ve been trying to get in touch with her ever since.
Jack: That sounds serious.
Adam: I think it is, jack. And the strangest thing is, the only person that she seems to be confiding in is billy.
Jack: Considering what’s going on with johnny, that is strange, but… billy has a great deal of respect and admiration for chelsea. I’m sure he’s not making things worse.
Adam: Um, I don’t know. You are more confident than I am about that.
Jack: Well, we have differing opinions about billy, but if he is involved, I’m sure he’s just trying to help. Give it some time. Look, focus on connor. You’re a great father. You’re gonna do whatever you can to help him, and I’m sure in the next few days, chelsea will get things sorted out. Just be patient.
Adam: [ Chuckles ] Well, I’m not too great at that, jack. And waiting isn’t always the smartest thing. Waiting is how I — how I lost sally.
Sally: [ Sighing ]

[ Footsteps approaching ]
Abby: Chance. Hi. I am so glad that you’re here. Please hear me out. Please let me explain.
Devon: Why did you come home early?
Amanda: What does that matter?
Devon: It doesn’t matter to what I did. I’m asking ’cause I want to know if something happened to naya.
Amanda: Oh. My mother is still alive, if that’s what you’re trying to ask. She’s regained consciousness, but she’s not doing particularly well. See, her recovery from her stroke — she’s not progressing the way that the doctors had hoped.
Devon: I’m sorry.
Amanda: Oh. Is that why you’re rolling around naked with abby?
Devon: I was gonna say that I’m sorry to make you come home to this after everything you’ve been going through with your family.
Amanda: Yeah, well, I’m sorry, too, because my mom is gonna need constant care and attention and I’m gonna have to spend a lot more time in virginia. That’s why I came home — so i could tell you in person because I felt like I owed you that much because you have been so incredibly patient. I get bladder leaks.
Amanda: I cannot believe how clueless I’ve been.
Devon: Amanda, there was nothing for you to be clueless about, though, alright? Abby and I have just only been friends. She came over today, and we were talking about our problems. We were leaning on each other for support… and one thing led to another.
Amanda: Is that supposed to make me feel better? Because it doesn’T. It just hurts even more because I did not see this coming. Even though there was distance growing between us since I’ve been away, I thought that I was gonna come back and we were gonna talk about it when I got home, but I — [Scoffs] I had no idea that this was going on.
Devon: But there’s nothing going on, is what I’m trying to tell you. This just happened.
Amanda: Be honest, devon. How many times did this just happen? Was it the whole time that I’ve been gone or —
Devon: No.
Amanda: Or did it go back even further? Was it — were you guys sneaking around while I was here in town?
Devon: Amanda, listen to me when I say this to you. I swear on everything in my life this is the first and only time this has ever happened.
Amanda: Then I guess it was just my luck, huh? I walk in on the one and only time that you and your dear friend decide to roll around on the couch together. How could you do this to me? How could you do this to me again?
Victoria: So sorry about that run-in with sally earlier. That should not have happened.
Nate: It’s not a problem.
Victoria: [ Sighs ] She just seemed to be lingering a bit too long.
Nate: It’s understandable. I imagine I’ll be face-to-face with my replacement at chancellor-winters soon enough. It comes with the territory.
Victoria: You know, that’s a really good attitude. And you were right, what you said to sally about this just being business. I’m impressed with the way you’ve handled things, not just with her, but the way you introduced yourself to your team was outstanding. You were clearly the man in charge and not being dismissive or overbearing or anything like that, things that I’ve been accused of in the past.
Nate: You? Overbearing?
Victoria: Ah, I know. Shocker, right?
Nate: Yeah. I just think I understand what employees feel like when their ideas are dismissed out of hand. I don’t want to make that same mistake.
Victoria: Well, good for you.
Nate: And I’ve done my homework. I knew some of the people who’ve been on the team the longest have been through a lot of changes lately, a lot of management shake-ups. What they need right now is a sense of balance and stability.
Victoria: All the right answers. You’re just batting a thousand today, which is even more confirmation that I did the smart thing in bringing you here to run things.
Nate: Well, I need to return the compliment. I feel like I learned a lot in a short time just watching you in action.
Victoria: We’re learning from each other. That’s the way it should be.
[ Chuckles ]
Elena: What a beautiful office.
Nick: Thanks, man. Hey.
Sally: Hey yourself.
[ Clears throat ] I’ve had a hell of a day.
Nick: I bet.
Sally: I was just hanging out, taking in the last few minutes in the office — a lot of memories there — when victoria came in with my replacement to politely but firmly tell me to clear out.
Nick: Sorry about that.
Sally: Nick, I don’t blame you for what happened.
Nick: Yeah, I know. You already told me that.
Sally: I know, but I just want to reiterate it. Victoria made her decision, and there was nothing you could do to talk her out of it. Honestly, I-I wish I was that decisive…especially when it comes to my romantic life ’cause I think I’m still a little… confused.
Nick: So, I’m guessing you, uh, miss adam?
Sally: I miss you.
Chance: Go ahead. Explain.
Abby: I’m sorry. I’m truly, truly sorry. And I am sick to my stomach, and I am filled with regret over what happened. I mean, chance, it was a mistake. Neither of us were thinking.
Chance: [ Sighs ] Is that all?
Abby: [ Voice breaking ] I was in a rough place when you didn’t come home last night. And I went over to devon’S. And he was going through a hard time, and so we were there, we were supporting each other the way that we’ve always done, the way that we’ve done hundreds of times, and it just — I don’t know what happened. It just turned into something else, something that neither of us were expecting and… something that just needs to go back into the place where it came from, from nowhere. I mean, chance, I-I’m so shaken up over this. I don’t even know what happened. Please [Sniffles] — Please just say something.
Chance: This didn’t come out of nowhere.
Abby: What?
Chance: No, this is something that’s been going on between you two for a long time. I felt it.
[ Breathes deeply ] So, the way I see it, all this was oddly inevitable.
Abby: [ Sighs ] Are you feeling sluggish or weighed down?
“The young and the restless”
will continue.
Elena: I’m sorry if I’m interrupting.
Victoria: Oh, no, not at all. I was just getting nate settled in, setting him up in his new office.
Nate: Yeah, it’s, uh — it’s a little nicer than that glorified supply closet I worked out of at the hospital, isn’t it? Or even the space I had at chancellor-winters.
Elena: Well, I know how excited you are about your new job, so…congratulations.
Nate: Thank you.
Victoria: I have a budget meeting, so I’m — I’m gonna go to that, let you two talk. Nate, I am convinced that you’re ready to dive in first thing in the morning, so I’m not worried. If you need anything, though, let me know.
Nate: Thank you again, victoria. I won’t let you down.
Victoria: It was nice to see you.
Elena: You too.
Nate: I’m glad you stopped by. Didn’t know when I’d see you again after the way we left things. But I’m happy to see you. Unless I misread the situation.
Jack: We haven’t talked about your breakup with sally.
Adam: Well, the details aren’t, uh, particularly pleasant, jack.
Jack: Are they ever at the end of a relationship?
Adam: I, um… I screwed up. And then I waited too long to try to fix things. And by the time I thought we could get back together, it was too late. She, um, moved on.
Jack: Really? I thought she had very deep feelings for you.
Adam: Yeah, and the real hilarious part is the guy that she moved on to…was nick.
Jack: Wh– and thus the tension I saw earlier.
Adam: Uh-huh. And, well, thank you for not pointing out that I ought to be used to, uh, falling for the same woman as my brother.
Jack: For what it’s worth, i have been in your shoes myself, with billy. It’s not an easy situation. I’m sorry you’re dealing with that.
Nick: I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss you, too.
Sally: And you don’t like to lie.
Nick: Mnh-mnh.
Sally: So, we miss each other.
Nick: We definitely do. But you know how I feel. I want you, but it’s got to be all of you. I have zero interest being in some triangle with my brother.
Sally: I understand.
Nick: I think you’re underestimating the potential severity of the situation. It wouldn’t be the first time my brother and I have gone after the same woman. Doesn’t end well for anyone.
Sally: I see. So, then where does that leave us?
Nick: I think you need to definitively figure it out, what it is you want, both personally and professionally, and you got to be 100% sure.
Sally: I know what I want.
Abby: I know that you’re a skilled detective and you are trained to observe people, but there’s no way you could have seen this coming.
Chance: But I did, abby. There’s been moments between you two that went beyond friendship. It’s something deeper.
Abby: That’s not true.
Chance: And you might not have admitted it to yourself, but I’ve seen it several times since I’ve been back from spain.
Abby: No. I don’t know what you are talking about. Devon and I are friends. That’s what we have always been. And, yes, we went out on a date like eight years ago ’cause we were both getting over a relationship, but it was terrible. It went terribly because we’re such good friends. And that’s all we have ever been. And this whole custody thing with dominic — I mean, that almost turned us into enemies.
Chance: You know, I was the one that encouraged you to let him back into our lives. Now you depend on him more than you do me.
Abby: No, chance, that’s not true. And if I do rely on devon, it’s because he’s always there for me and dominic. He never tells us that work matters more.
Amanda: You know this isn’t the first time that you’ve let me down this way. But I forgave you. I believed that you were just working through unresolved feelings with your ex and that you would never do this again, but clearly that was a huge mistake.
Devon: And, you know, I don’t really have anything to say to that…except that I’m trying to piece together everything and figure out why this happened.
Amanda: I don’t think that there’s anything left to figure out, devon.
Devon: But there is, though. There is ’cause it’s not the same as that time. It’s not even like when elena and nate got together. They were falling in love.
Amanda: Yeah.
Devon: It doesn’t matter. I’m not gonna — I’m not gonna insult you by making up excuses.
Amanda: Oh, thank you. You know, as disgusted and outraged as I am, I’m actually glad that things happened this way. It’s — it’s a relief, honestly.
Devon: I’m not following you. What do you mean?
Amanda: Mm, okay, well, i will make it crystal clear. I now know exactly what you are capable of, and I can finally leave town without a backward glance. Moderate to severe eczema still disrupts my skin.
Elena: Nate, I came back to genoa city because I wanted to work things out with you. And I hate that we’re in this stalemate. But it feels like we’re digging this hole deeper and deeper and it’s getting harder and harder to get out of.
Nate: I feel the same way. I know our last conversation kind of spiraled out of control.
Elena: I just — I don’t know how we’re gonna get past this conflict.
Nate: Look, elena, I want to get back to what we had. Everything was so right. But we both have to be willing to try.
Elena: [ Sighs ] I came here to congratulate and support you. And I know I have to let go of my suspicions about your motives. And I want to believe that you’re back on the right path.
Nate: I am. If you give me the opportunity, I’ll show you. Let me prove to you I am still the man you fell in love with.
Abby: What did you want me to do? To turn down devon’s support f-for me, for dominic?
Chance: Abby, I’m trying to take the high road here. But what I saw earlier was not a friend supporting a friend. Now, what — what is this all about? Are you just trying to get back at me for what I said at crimson lights last night?
Abby: No, of course not. I would never do that. I-I have no explanation for what happened. I have no idea how it happened. I mean, I went over there, and, yes, I was upset about what happened at crimson lights. And devon — he was hurting, too, and we just… I don’t know. We just found each other. But I would never try to get back at you. It wasn’t some sort of revenge.
Chance: Okay, well, you have to understand that I saw this coming. This was inevitable. Devon was the one that came to the rescue when you wanted a child. He was the one that delivered our son. He was there every moment that i wasn’t, abby. How many months did you and i get to spend together in the same space, hmm? And how many of those months did you get what you needed from me? It’s more like days, if we’re being honest. That whole time, you two were just growing closer and closer.
Abby: I know I hurt you in the worst possible way. And here you are, we’re having this conversation, and you’re — you’re talking about my wants and my needs. But what about you? What are your expectations?
Chance: I guess you didn’t get my voicemail.
Abby: No, I-I didn’T.
Chance: Said I wanted to come home and I wanted to try to fix things.
Abby: I’m sorry I missed that.
Chance: You know what, abby? My wants have not changed…but my expectations definitely have. I want to make somebody happy. I want to be able to be myself and have that be enough. That’s not what we have. I think it’s time we face that reality.
Abby: [ Sniffles ]
[ Sighs ]
Devon: You’re talking about just ending the relationship?
Amanda: [ Scoffs ] You know the one good thing about my timing? I walked in here with a bag already packed and I’m gonna walk right back out with it.
Devon: I don’t want you walking out any way —
Amanda: Okay, then I won’t walk. I will march out of here with my head held high, away from you and your phony good guy act.
Devon: Amanda, we can’t just give up everything that we have.
Amanda: The hell we can’T. Come on. This relationship — it never stood a chance.
Devon: What are you talking about?
Amanda: Oh.
Devon: You’re just upset — ’cause you know that’s not true.
Amanda: I’m just upset. Did y-you use that line on my sister, too? “You’re just upset.” Is that — that what you said to hilary when you screwed around on her? Be honest with me, devon. Did you cheat on my sister, too?
Devon: No, I never did.
Amanda: Okay, well, I guess i always was the unlucky sister.
[ Scoffs ] You know, I really thought that we got past this hurdle with hilary.
Devon: I did.
Amanda: Yeah. Yeah, you did. You really had me believing that I wasn’t just another poor man’s hilary, so much so that I let you go and have a baby with another woman. So that family becomes our new hurdle. But you know what? I am not the same woman that you met. I have a family now. I have a mother and a sister and a stepdad, and they need me. They need my support. It is very clear that you do not need my support. So I am not gonna waste another second here with you. You know, I want you to know this. You know, before I walked in here, I was across the hall defending you to nate, supporting you. All the while, you’re rolling around here with abby, like two teenagers in the backseat of a damn car.
Devon: Will you just hear me out, please?
Amanda: No. No. I’ve been listening, devon, and you — you haven’t said anything to convince me that this relationship is worth saving. So I — I’m not gonna give you any more of my love or my loyalty. I’m gonna focus that energy on the people that are faithful to me — my family.
Devon: And that’s fine. There’s nothing wrong with you doing that. I want you to do that. But I also want you to know that I love you. That’s the truth.
Amanda: You know what? I believe you. I do believe that you love me in your own warped way. But if this is your love, I don’t want it. Jack: Okay, so, here’s the big question — how can I help?
Adam: You’re doing it, jack. I mean, you’re listening to me. And that’s all I can ask for, especially since you don’t have a good opinion of sally.
Jack: No, no, my experience with sally was very different from yours. I got the sense that you two had something very special. I even told sally that.
Adam: Yeah? Well, I appreciate that. We — we — we did. We — we could be honest with each other. I mean, how rare is that, jack? And we just — we had a strong connection, and then I just — I blew it up thinking that I was doing the right thing for her.
Jack: Thinking you were doing — what does that mean? I thought if we weren’t a couple that victoria wouldn’t hold anything against her and she would judge sally solely on her merits as ceo of newman media. But now she’s lost her dream job anyway, even though she’s been crushing it over there.
Jack: Wouldn’t be the first time newman enterprises let go of someone who is right for the job.
Adam: Don’t I know that. But, no, I — I hurt sally for nothing. And that’s a big mistake to try to fix.
Jack: You really do love her, don’t you?
Adam: [ Chuckles ] More than I thought I could love anybody, jack.
Jack: Well, then I have just one piece of advice. Find some way to let her know that.
Nick: Alright, so, you know what you want. Is this something you’re gonna be sharing with anyone?
Sally: [ Laughs ] Definitely. Yes. I just want to make sure that i word it right because sometimes I just blurt things out and feelings get hurt. So [Sighs]… What I want is a drama-free romance with someone who sees me as their equal. I want a sense of purpose, and i want to show the world that i can succeed in whatever I choose and that I can balance my personal and my professional life.
Nick: Well, it seems like you have a pretty good grasp on it.
Sally: I have had some time to think, and I know that adam represents nothing but conflict. I don’t know. Maybe that was part of the attraction in the beginning, but I do feel like I have grown out of that phase. I do not want that in my life anymore. I need stability and positive energy. Love, to me — it’s not about attachment or clinging on to each other. It is about independence and synergy. Does any of that make sense?
Nick: Makes perfect sense.
Abby: I don’t want to believe that things have gotten that far.
Chance: Well, they have. It happens.
Abby: No, no, no. Look, I can make this up to you. I love you. I know that you still love me, too.
Chance: Yeah, I do. But there’s not a solution for this, not now. Now, I’m gonna need some time and some space to figure things out. So please give me that.
Abby: Okay. Whatever you need.
[ Sniffles ]
[ Sighs ]
[ Sniffles ]
[ Exhales heavily ]
Amanda: I’ll send for the rest of my things.
Devon: Just hang on a second. I love you. I love you, and I know that matters. There’s nothing more important than love. I don’t want you to go. Please.
[ Dominic fussing ]
Amanda: Go to your son, devon. He needs your love. If you go to your son’s mother, that’s okay with me, too, because I have a life that i need to get back to. Goodbye, devon.
Devon: Amanda. Amanda, just —
