Sally: [ Sighs ]
[ Chuckles ] You beat me here.
Nick: Yeah, I did.
Sally: [ Chuckles ]
Nick: Have a seat.
Sally: Thanks.
Nick: Really glad you said yes to this.
Sally: I always love having dinner with a colleague. Work’s really exciting right now, so there’s so much to discuss.
[ Door opens ]
[ Door closes ]
Adam: Hey there.
Chelsea: Oh. Hi.
Adam: How you doing? Listen, I’m actually glad that i into you.
Chelsea: Yeah?
Adam: I would like for you to reconsider my proposition. A little getaway with connor and me. Nothing major, just a weekend trip, and it doesn’t have to be an amusement park since that idea was clearly not working for you. And it’s not just about you. I think it would be good for the three of us. So, what do you say?
Victoria: We need to talk.
Billy: What’s wrong?
Victoria: [ Sighs ] I went home to spend some time with johnny. I-I thought that we could just hang out, that he might need some reassurance or some comforting after the news we gave him, but he’s — he won’t even look at me. He won’t eat anything. He’s completely shutting me out.
Billy: I called him. I texted him. He’s not getting back to me at all.
Victoria: He’s holed up in his room, playing video games online with his friends. He’s got the door closed. I can hear him in there…
Billy: Well —
Victoria: …Acting like nothing’s happened.
Billy: Trying to distract himself.
Victoria: Yeah, I know that’s what he’s doing, billy. He’s furious with us, and this is his way of letting off steam. But this situation with chelsea is not gonna go anywhere. He’s gonna have to deal with it sooner or later.
Billy: Did you get anything out of him at all?
Victoria: No, of course not. Nothing new, except for the fact that he wishes that we hadn’t told him that chelsea’s his biological mom. He wants nothing to do with her. And, honestly, I feel the same way.
Billy: I don’t blame you.
Victoria: And get this — the woman had the nerve to barge into my office and imply that we’re not doing enough, and her helpful suggestion is that we all work together to nudge johnny into a relationship with her.
Billy: You got to be kidding. What is wrong with that woman?
Victoria: A lot is wrong with her. The whole episode was just insidious.
Billy: I talked to her, vick. I told her that he was very upset by the news and that he needed some space. I mean, I cannot believe that she went to you and kept pushing.
Victoria: Yeah, well, she did, and it was obnoxious. I had to threaten her practically to get her to leave.
Billy: I’m sorry that you had to go through that.
Victoria: I’m starting to think that this is only the beginning. I think we made a terrible mistake.
[ Doorbell rings ]
Diane: I hope it’s not a bad time.
Jack: No, the timing is great. I just poured myself a drink. Come on in.
Diane: Okay. I come bearing gifts. Well, actually, a gift, for harrison. He broke his favorite dump truck on our playdate and I found the exact same one and I thought i would get it into his hands as soon as possible.
Jack: Well, isn’t that nice? Harrison is already upstairs in his, uh, bedtime routine with the nanny, but I’ll make sure he gets this first thing in the morning and that he knows it’s from his dee dee.
Diane: Oh, well, thank you for that.
Jack: No sweat. For what it’s worth, he was in a very chipper mood when he said good night, so I think the worst of the broken truck trauma is behind us.
Diane: [ Chuckles ] Well, that’s good.
Jack: Boy, you’ve been in a spending mood today. First the gift basket for phyllis and now this.
Diane: Could we please not talk about phyllis?
Jack: Okay. I didn’t mean to start anything, especially since phyllis has agreed to a cease-fire. Though I’m not sure it’s because of the basket, no matter how artfully arranged it was.
Diane: Well, who knows what motivates that woman? And I’ve — I’ve given up trying to figure it out.
Jack: I’m a little surprised to see you this stressed. I thought you had agreed to accept phyllis at her word that war behind her. I mean, what changed since then? Uh, everybody seemed so optimistic.
[ Cellphone pings ]
Diane: [ Sighs ] Excuse me.
[ Sighs heavily ]
Jack: Okay, it’s obvious something is going on. Talk to me. What is it?
Diane: You’re right. I — I used the gift for harrison as an excuse to — to see you.
Jack: About what?
Diane: Well, maybe offer me some of that liquid courage, and I — I just might tell you.

Billy: That really pisses me off. I mean, how could she mislead us on her intentions in that way?
Victoria: Seriously? This really surprises you, that a former professional con artist would lie to get what she wants?
Billy: I was fully convinced that the reason why she wanted us to tell johnny is that so he wouldn’t be blindsided.
Victoria: [ Sighs ] I knew it, billy. I knew that chelsea was gonna want more. I knew it in my gut, and then that’s why I asked if we could just take things slowly, to just not rush into things. That’s what I wanted, but I went against my better instinct. I went with the program, and now here we are.
Billy: Okay, I think we need to remind ourselves why we went along with chelsea’s request in the first place, and that’s because there’s a lot of people in our inner circle that know the truth about johnny. And he is old enough to understand, and it’s better that it comes from us and not a random person in a situation that can’t be controlled by us. And maybe that’s why he’s upset — because he feels everyone around him knew and he didn’T.
Victoria: Right. I know. I know. I heard the argument from chelsea. I heard it already. And it was fine in theory, but this is reality. I mean, I wish that I had been more adamant about waiting. I wish that I had just…
[ Sighs ] Because we answered questions that johnny hadn’t even asked.
Billy: Not yet, and there might be a day that he’s going to want to know where his genes came from or the fact that connor is his brother and not just his cousin.
Victoria: Billy, he may. He might.
[ Sighs ] We asked our son if he wanted to know who his biological mother was, and he said no. What if he preferred to go through the rest of his life keeping that door permanently closed? Did we ever consider that possibility?
Billy: [ Sighs ] If you’re wondering if I’m questioning our decision, yeah, I am. But all we’re trying to do is save johnny from feeling like we’re hiding something from him. Or that he was unwanted or abandoned.
Victoria: Yes, but now, instead, he just feels confused and he feels vulnerable because we forced him to face something that he explicitly did not want to. And all of it because it’s what chelsea wanted.
Chelsea: Why don’t you and connor make it a father/son trip? I’m sure he’d enjoy spending quality time with you since you parked him at the ranch with his grandparents.
Adam: I didn’t park our son, chelsea. I see him every day.
Chelsea: It wasn’t a slam, adam. You needed space from victor. I get it.
Adam: Something really is wrong, isn’t it? I’m guessing that caffeine and sugar aren’t going to help. So…how about I buy you dinner and we can talk about it?
Chelsea: No, thanks. I’m not hungry. And I don’t feel like talking. I’ve been talking a lot — all day, actually — and it doesn’t seem like anyone cares what i have to say, so…
Adam: Okay. Well, then do it for me. I could use the company, and maybe some good food will perk up your appetite.
Chelsea: I doubt that.
Adam: I would consider it a favor. I’m tired of sitting at the bar, eating alone, tired of room service. Besides, connor has been hounding me about this new console, some virtual-reality thing.
Chelsea: Yeah, he’s been nagging me about that, too.
Adam: Mm-hmm. Well, I’m a little leery about him gaming so much. It could cut into his studying time.
Chelsea: Yeah, I mean, i guess we could make it work. We just have to set strict limits. But I’m inclined to say no because a distraction like that can be a slippery slope.
Adam: Well, whatever we do, i think it’s important to present a united front.
Chelsea: Agreed.
Adam: Okay, well, tell you what — how about you come out for a bite with me and we will stick to connor, our favorite subject, and we will not venture into anything else. Promise.
Chelsea: Okay. For the sake of our son, I will join you.
Nick: Well, I got to hand it to you, sally. You managed to win over the marketing team, all those people who were calling for your head after you missed that very important meeting. And I’m just dying to know how you did that.
Sally: Mm. Simple. I was candid and up-front. I called myself out, i apologized, I took full responsibility, and then i dazzled them with my brilliant ideas and my endless charm.
Nick: Well, I have no doubt about that.
Sally: I actually learned that from you. I’m kind of embarrassed to admit that being honest felt like a nel but you have been very up-front with me since the beginning. And it was very refreshing.
[ Chuckles ] So I figured I’d give it a whirl.
Nick: Well, you nailed it.
Sally: I did, didn’t I?
Nick: Mm-hmm.
Sally: It’s been my M.O. For so long to always be working an angle.
Nick: Well, now that that’s all behind you, what is your plan for success moving forward?
Sally: I would like to change my whole approach and actually learn from my past mistakes and not just let myself fall into the same trap again and again.
Nick: Give me some specifics.
Sally: I have a tendency to be a bit impulsive. I like to take on a new challenge without really thinking things through.
Nick: You do that often?
Sally: [ Chuckles ] When I am overcome with inspiration, I have a hard time holding back.
Nick: Whereas I tend to do the exact opposite — overthink things. Sometimes it’s best, though, just to dive in, learn as you go.
Sally: Well, I guess that’s why we make a good team. You do you, I do me, and in the end, we wind up inspiring each other.
Now glossy hair starts
with your shampoo.
Sally: So, I hope I’m not venturing too far afield, but I’m curious about your past.
Nick: My professional past.
Sally: Well, yeah, since we agreed to keep this dinner strictly about business.
Nick: That’s right. We did.
Sally: Tell me about new hope. I know it was a passion project for you and you poured your heart and soul into that organization. You helped create something important and did some lasting good for the community.
Nick: Was there a question coming?
[ Both laugh ]
Sally: How has it been to leave that behind for the business world?
Nick: Uh, you know, the work we do at new hope is very special. I’m proud of what we built. When I went back to newman, i left it in very capable hands. But I’m still on the board, so it’s not like I walked away forever.
Sally: Understood.
Nick: Very happy where I am right now. I needed a change.
Sally: Well, I’m glad to hear that. I hope you’re not overworking yourself, though.
Nick: No. Coming back to newman was, uh… invigorating. And no one is more surprised than I am.
Sally: [ Chuckles ]
Jack: You should know you needn’t bring gifts for harrison or fabricate some reason for talking to me.
Diane: Thank you for saying that. I’m still so focused on getting back into people’s good graces, I feel like I’m walking on eggshells half the time.
Jack: Okay, tell me what’s got you so wound up.
Diane: I need to know something, jack, and I need you to be honest with me. Have you abandoned the war against me, too?
Jack: Aren’t we past this?
Diane: No, no, not completely. I need to hear you say it, that — that you believe that I’ve worked hard to make amends for my mistakes, that — that I’ve changed, that — that you forgive me.
Jack: I am willing to say that I can forget the past and start a new beginning with a clean slate. And I’d like to think that would be enough.
Diane: [ Sighs ] But is it really a clean slate? You know, hit zero and reset, a — a total start-over?
Jack: The answer is yes.
Diane: [ Sighs ]
Jack: Unless what I overheard phyllis say is true, that there is something about your life in los angeles that could be your undoing.
Billy: I think it’s a waste of energy blaming chelsea. Our priority right now should be taking care of, johnny.
Victoria: Well, it’s easier to blame her or even blame myself for agreeing to it than it is to watch him suffer. I hate it.
Billy: I know. It’s the worst feeling in the world.
Victoria: I want to make it better for him, but I — I have no idea how.
Billy: Well, we’ll figure it out together. We’ll figure out a way to ease his pain.
Victoria: I think there’s a part of johnny that’s scared. I mean, the fact that we presented this to him without any warning, he thinks it’s for another reason. I know he’s not going to come out and say that he’s frightened, but I know him. He is.
Billy: Then if he’s scared that things are going to change, that his world is going to change, then we do everything we can to prove to him that it won’T. He is our son, vick. No matter what we tell him about chelsea, that’ll never change.
Victoria: I’ve told him that. And I’m going to keep telling him that. But how do I make him believe it? Not just know it and believe it, but how do I make him feel it?
Billy: I’m going to reach out to him and we’re going to hang out and we’re either going to talk about it or we’re going to not talk about it. We’ll do whatever he wants. And maybe it’s time that we have some family counseling, the three of us. Look, we can’t unring this bell.
Victoria: If only that were possible. But you’re right. We just have to keep the lines of communication open.
Billy: In the spirit of that, there is something that I should share with you.
Nick: Thank you. So, are you a chocoholic?
Sally: Yes. But not to the exclusion of anything else on this menu. The desserts here are fabulous.
Nick: Yes, they are.
Sally: You pick something, and I will just steal a bite.
Nick: Bread pudding with the bourbon sauce, two spoons, no stealing.
Sally: Perfect. Alright. My turn to ask you a question.
Sally: You just did, about my dessert preference. Sorry, but you have reached your question limit for the evening.
Nick: [ Chuckles ]
Sally: I’m kidding. Ask me anything. I am an open book.
Nick: But only about your career — because we are keeping this professional.
Sally: Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
[ Footsteps approaching ]
Adam: Good evening.
Sally: Hello.
Nick: Adam. Chelsea.
Chelsea: Hi.
Adam: Well, enjoy your evening.
Sally: I don’t care what’s been said. He definitely knows.
Nick: Yeah.
Sally: Or at least suspects.
Nick: Let’s get out of here then. Let’s go get dessert somewhere else. That gelato place down the street’s really good.
Sally: And miss the bread pudding? Not on your life. Announcer: Type 2 diabetes?
Nick: Look, if this is uncomfortable for you with adam over there having dinner, let’s just get out of here.
Sally: I mean, just when i convince myself it isn’T… it is. Which is stupid because I’ve moved on.
Nick: You sure about that?
Sally: [ Chuckles ] Maybe I should try that forthright honesty I’ve been so eager to practice.
Nick: Yeah, let’s see what you got. Go for it.
Sally: I have made it clear to adam that he and I are through, that I’m focused on my work, that he hurt me, and that there is no way forward for us.
Nick: I know you told him that. And you told yourself that, too.
Sally: And yet it… this — it’s just complicated and confusing.
Nick: I mean, we better be careful. We’re getting very close to talking about non-business stuff.
Sally: [ Chuckles ]
Adam: Sally’s not wasting any time cozying up to the boss.
Chelsea: Whatever.
Adam: You just passed up an opportunity to take a dig at sally.
Chelsea: So?
Adam: Okay, this is not just a mood. Something is seriously wrong. What is going on, chelsea?
Chelsea: Okay, you promised we would only talk about connor.
Adam: [ Sighs ] Fine. Well, then let me try to raise your spirits by reminding you what an amazing kid he is. We both have screwed up, but he is the one thing that we have done right. And you were a hell of a mom, chelsea. I hope you hear that and you believe it because it’s true.
Chelsea: [ Chuckles ] I wish I could believe that. It feels like there’s a lot of things right with connor and I’m doing everything wrong with johnny.
Adam: Why are you bringing up johnny?
Chelsea: Earlier today, billy and victoria had a conversation with him. They told johnny I’m his biological mother.
Billy: I think you should know chelsea came by with a gift for johnny.
Victoria: She wants to buy her way in his life now?
Billy: I told her it was inappropriate and that now was not the right time.
Victoria: She thinks she’s gonna badger us into submission? Is that her plan?
Billy: Look, I get it. I know you’re upset. I was, too. But when I thought about it, I think maybe this is chelsea’s idea of an offering.
Victoria: What do you mean?
Billy: The gift. It’s a blanket. A baby blanket she had while she was pregnant with johnny.
Victoria: [ Scoffs ] She’s held onto it all these years, and now she just wants to force it on him?
Billy: Maybe she was trying to find a way to show him that he was always loved and that the decision to give up her parental rights wasn’t easy. But she did it because she knew it was best for him.
Victoria: This isn’t about chelsea and what she wants or needs, billy.
Billy: I understand that, but it’s still — she wants to let him know that he was always loved. It’s a positive message, isn’t it?
Victoria: No, I warned her not to use any subtle attempts to influence johnny. She won’t listen to me. Where do we draw the line? There it is, even from you — the lack of trust, the wondering if I’m hiding something, all because of some snarky remark from phyllis. No, I-I thought we put this subject to rest, but apparently not.
[ Glass thuds ] Will I ever get past all these doubts and suspicions?
Jack: I’d say that depends on you.
Diane: I have done everything that I can think of to prove that my intentions are good, that I — that I came back to genoa city for all the right reasons. But having to constantly defend myself about these — these never-ending innuendoes and accusations, it’s exhausting. I mean, I can’t go anywhere in this town without running into someone who wishes I’d stayed dead.
Jack: Diane, you have earned that reaction. You came back to a town where you made more than your fair share of enemies. You’re could have stayed in L.A.
Diane: No, I couldn’T. I had to come back because this is where kyle and harrison are. And you. The only people whose opinions of me I care about. The only ones who I thought accepted me. I mean, is — is there another shoe that could drop? I mean, I-I certainly don’t think so. But I live in fear that one of those enemies is going to find something that’s going to change the way that you and kyle see me, wh-whether or not it’s — it’s even true.
[ Exhales sharply ] I guess i just didn’t realize how, uh — how hard it would be to redeem myself, how long this battle would take.
[ Crying ]
Jack: I can see this has been tough on you. My advice? Take the clean slate kyle and i have offered you. Let that fortify you from here on.
Diane: Thank you. It means a lot. I appreciate you so much. You have the least reasons of anyone to make me feel worthy, believed, safe. And yet you do.
Jack: I’m glad that’s so.
Diane: Me too. Are you tired of clean clothes that just don’t smell clean?
“The young and the restless”
will continue.
Jack: When you asked for a reset, I was agreeing to a peaceful co-existence as kyle’s parents, as harrison’s grandparents, the two of us working together.
Diane: That’s all been wonderful, but —
Jack: It has. It has. I absolutely agree. But anything more than that, I… I just don’t want you misinterpreting my friendship for something else entirely.
Diane: [ Sighs ]
Billy: I am fine with setting limits, as long as we don’t give up on johnny accepting chelsea because I don’t think that’s the right thing to do.
Victoria: I’m not giving up. I made it very clear from the beginning that johnny gets to decide, and he’s made his — he’s made his wishes very clear.
Billy: Look, vick, I’m not talking about putting the two of them in a room and letting them hash it out. He’s a 13-year-old kid. He’s processing a ton of feelings right now, but they might change, okay? It’s been known to happen.
Victoria: You know, I also made it very clear to you and chelsea that johnny is the one that drives any future relationship.
Billy: What —
Victoria: And she — she agreed to the ground rules, and now she’s the one overstepping. She is the one who’s taking it too far, too much, too soon. And I thought that you and i were in agreement on this!
Billy: We are.
Victoria: Chelsea changed our lives for the good when she stepped aside as johnny’s mother, and I will always be grateful to her for that. But she doesn’t get to decide this, and she sure as hell doesn’t get to force a relationship on our son that he doesn’t want!
Adam: Why would billy and victoria decide to tell johnny that?
Chelsea: Because I persuaded them to.
Adam: But why? And why now?
Chelsea: I didn’t want him finding out down the line that his biological mom lived in the same town and everybody knew about it except him.
Adam: I can’t — I can’t believe you didn’t tell me this. This is huge. And it affects connor, too. I mean, how could you not warn me about this?
Chelsea: I didn’t know if they’d even go through with it, adam, okay? I wanted to see how it would all pan out before I came to you. And don’t worry. I didn’t talk to connor about it. I wouldn’t do that without conferring with you first.
Adam: Well, thank you for that, at least.
Chelsea: Also, I promised billy and victoria I wouldn’t tell anybody until they saw how johnny reacted.
Adam: And?
Chelsea: It seems he’s upset. He doesn’t want me in his life. At all.
Adam: [ Sighs ]
Nick: Alright, you want to talk about you and me or adam?
Sally: No. Shoptalk only. Nothing about the rest. At least, not tonight. Not now. Is that okay?
Nick: Yeah, of course. We’ll do whatever you want.
Sally: [ Chuckles ]
Adam: I realize how big this is for you. I had no idea that you were dealing with this. It must bring up a lot of stuff that you’ve kept buried for a long time. And I know what it took to bring johnny into this world because i was there. I know how scared you were. And how brave. Yeah, it was a complicated time. But I also know that you wanted to do what’s best for johnny. And that’s why you made the hard decision that you did.
Chelsea: Yeah.
Adam: I respected you for it then. But I also understand it’s not a choice that you make just once. You have to live with it for the rest of your life.
Chelsea: Adam, I’m not a bad person. I want to do the right thing. But it’s like I always make the wrong choice or — or — or love the wrong person or — or go down the wrong path. It’s like I’m — I’m searching for these answers, and I’ve convinced myself that I’ve found them, and then ultimately i realize that I haven’T. And I’m starting to think i never will.
If you have type 2 diabetes
or high blood pressure…
Adam: I really wish you would stop being so hard on yourself. You know, maybe you do need a fresh start somewhere away from genoa city. I mean, we both know how toxic that this place can be.
Chelsea: What about connor?
Adam: We can work something out when it comes to him.
Chelsea: What does that even mean?
Adam: I’m not gonna let you take our son away, chelsea. I’m — I’m never gonna do that. But we could come up with an arrangement. Okay, I want you to hear me when I say this. Connor needs you to be strong, healthy, and happy. You claim that you can’t find answers, but maybe you can’t find them here.
Chelsea: I can’t leave town, adam. I finally have the opportunity to potentially spend some time with johnny. You know? He just found out who I am.
