Lorna Watson, Jerry Iwu, Max Brown and Will Trotter of "Sister Boniface Mysteries" on BritBox

Interview with stars Lorna Watson, Jerry Iwu, Max Brown and producer Will Trotter of “Sister Boniface Myseries” on Britbox by Suzanne 2/9/22

BritBox logoThe Britbox Winter TCA panel started with the “Sister Boniface Mysteries,” which had premiered February 8, the day before, in the U.S. (in the UK, it premieres March 11 on the UKTV Drama channel). It’s a fun, quirky show, despite being a murder mystery. We had all three major cast members in attendance, as well as the producer, Will Trotter.

Sister Boniface (played by “The IT Crowd”‘s Lorna Watson) is an unusual nun who drives a Vespa around the small town of “Great Slaughter” and helps the local police solve murders. In the spirit of shows like “Murder, She Wrote” and “Grantchester,” this small town happens to have many murders. Although the series takes place in the 1960’s, Sister B. has advanced knowledge of forensics and a PhD in chemistry. The policemen, DI Sam Gillespie (played by Max Brown, whom you may recognize from “Beauty and the Beast” as well as many other shows) and DS Felix Livingstone (played by Jerry Iwu, “Sex Education”), are grateful to have the good sister’s help (as unusual as it is). The show is smartly written and is not only a good mystery series but explores issues that are still relevant today, such as sexism, racism, class division and more. However, the show is not at all preachy or heavy-handed.

Although Sister Boniface is very intelligent, Watson believes that she is quite innocent and has a “childlike element” as well as often being “silly.” Watson admits that she, too, can sometimes be “surprisingly naĂŻve.” She has never played such a smart character before, so it was a “real joy” to put on the habit again. Getting into character was easy because the nun’s habit helped so much. She dubbed it a “quite transformative costume.” She also shared that the costume is quite freeing because she doesn’t have to spend much time in makeup. Before shooting, she spoke with the other characters playing nuns about where they would place their hands and so forth.

At Trotter’s urging, Watson told us an amusing story. When the director of the first episode, Paul Gibson, saw her, he acted like he didn’t know her because she was dressed as herself, not as Sister Boniface. He had no idea how she really looked out of the nun’s habit. He later came by and apologized. Lorna is hopeful that others will be the same way, so that she will be able to keep her anonymity if she runs into fans.

Watson told us that she had only ridden a Vespa once before, while on vacation. It took her quite a while to get used to driving it on the show to make it look natural. She also did a wheelie, but not on purpose. Brown joked with her about running the Vespa into his police car and how huge the Vespa’s sidecar is. Iwu joked that he “never felt terrified” while riding in the sidecar with her.

Iwu’s character Felix arrives in town in the first episode, expecting to be working in London, much to his disappointment. Eventually, the mistake is corrected, and he heads towards London, but of course, predictably, he ends up staying (I don’t think that’s really a spoiler). Not much else in the show is predictable, I’m glad to say. My only other observation about Felix is that he certainly wears a lot of suits for someone who came from a tropical country like Bermuda! Every TV show seems to have someone like Felix that arrives new into the situation so that he (and we) can be told what’s going on. Iwu told us that Felix observes about the town, “this is insane. Why is everyone killing themselves or killing each other?”

Brown noted that they all had great chemistry. The series started filming with episode 4, but they all “fell into our characters and our relationships” immediately. Watson agreed that they did “form a bond very quickly”. Brown observed that having all of these characters around in nun’s habits made them all want to behave better on set, but Watson and the other nuns felt that it was a very relaxed set. Brown and Iwu joked that a group of nuns is called a “gaggle.”

The cast was asked which mysteries they liked to read or watch.  Brown told us that his favorite mysteries to read are the classic Sherlock Holmes stories, but he’s also looking forward to the upcoming Hugh Laurie series, “Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?” (which comes out this spring on Britbox). Iwu grew up with “Murder, She Wrote.” Watson grew up with “Columbo” and also enjoys the Miss Marple movies. She joked that now she can solve the mysteries with her “new forensic skills.”

Trotter observed that the combination of Watson’s “fabulous face,” which he described as “owl-like,” combined with the habit and the glasses, gave them a lot of character to work with. He said, somewhat facetiously, “the blinking of the eyes every now and again are just like little messages to the directors: cut there, cut there, closer there.” Her pushing her glasses up on her nose became part of the quirkiness of the character. He also spoke a little bit about why we love mysteries so much, particularly this type, which he called “cozy crime.”

Trotter assured us that the Catholic Church has been fully supportive of “Father Brown” and most likely will for this show, too, because it doesn’t put them in a bad light, and the nuns are three dimensional characters (not caricatures). Also, the show is very light and fun. It doesn’t have blood and gore or other dark things.

The convent in the series is shot at a school, “Princethorpe College,” which used to be a convent, so it looks authentic. It has a chapel and stained-glass windows. Trotter’s children went there because he lives nearby. The rest of the show is mostly “shot in the Cotswolds” which is also where “Father Brown” is shot. He praised the area, which is “fantastic” with many large churches, homes and “beautiful rolling countryside.” He called the area “timeless,” which makes it great for shooting this show, set 50 years ago. He explained that “all the stone is the same and the architecture is just beautiful.” It was made “in the 16th century and so on.” Watson was “super-excited” to be there and to see where Sister Boniface sleeps each night, and to see her crime lab/winery. Iwu praised the locations they use as “beautiful” but observed that the convent in particular has a calming effect.

At the very end of our interview, Trotter revealed that the series has been renewed for season two (or as the Brits call it, “Series 2”). Everyone was happy and excited to hear it. Don’t miss this wonderful series, especially if you love mysteries.

Photos from "Sister Boniface Mysteries" on Britbox

From the makers of Father Brown and Shakespeare & Hathaway – Private Investigators comes this light-hearted murder mystery series starring a Vespa driving, crime solving Catholic nun: Sister Boniface. It’s the 1960s and police forensics are rudimentary. Luckily the residents of Great Slaughter, nestled deep in the British countryside, have a secret weapon. Sister Boniface. This nun might be predisposed to forgive – but she’s also one hell of an amateur detective. If there’s evidence to be found, Boniface will find it, with a little help from dashing maverick DI Sam Gillespie and buttoned-up Bermudan DS Felix Livingstone, who’s horrified to be stuck in the eccentric world of Great Slaughter.

Review of “Legacies: The Complete Third Season”

DVD Review!

"Legacies: The Complete Third Season" DVD cover

“Legacies: The Complete Third Season” Review by Suzanne 2/10/22

I loved this spin-off from “The Vampire Diaries” and “The Originals.” I never miss an episode every week. I’m happy to have the DVD for season 3. I’m sure I’ll get the last season (season 4) as well. I’m still in denial that it’s all over. In this third season, some of the characters die or disappear. It sets things up nicely for season 4, especially with this really huge thing that happens to Hope. It has a great season finale.

Unfortunately, there’s only one special feature, called “Thank You, Georgia: Legacies.” It’s fun to watch, but I wish they had more. You can definitely watch this whole series without ever having watched TVD or TO, but it does help to watch those first.

Review of “Catwoman: Hunted” (Digital/Blu-ray/4K Ultra HD)

DVD Review!

"Catwoman: Hunted" (Digital/Blu-ray/4K Ultra HD) cover

“Catwoman: Hunted” (Digital/Blu-ray/4K Ultra HD) Review by Suzanne 2/5/22

This is another great DC superhero animated movie. They do such a wonderful job with them. In fact, their live action movies should be as good as these are, but sadly, they always miss the mark. I love the story, and this has fantastic animation and style. It’s very cool. It has a 60’s sort of vibe, but it’s anything but old-fashioned.

Catwoman takes the protagonist lead in this movie as she tries to steal a valuable emerald. She’s not the only one trying to steal it, however. Other familiar characters include Batwoman, Tobias Whale, Black Mask and Leviathan. There is plenty of action and very fun dialogue.  They did a great job on the casting. This is not for children as it’s kind of violent.

There are two special features. One is “When the Hunter Becomes the Hunted” and the other is “Catwoman: The Feline Femme Fatale.” They’re both worth watching for any fan. This 4K Ultra edition also comes with a Blu-ray disk and a digital code for downloading it. Every DVD should have all of these options!

“DC’s Stargirl: The Complete Second Season” Review by Suzanne 2/5/22

I love any superhero show, and I grew up reading comics about the Justice Society, so I never miss “Stargirl.” This season is not as light and fun as previous seasons. Things get pretty dark and harrowing for the young heroes, but I’ll bet you can guess how it all turns out in the end. No spoilers here! My only complaint is that they seem to be taking a really long time to build their superhero team and get it all together. They’re teens, so the writers are taking their time in getting them to mature and accept their roles.

There are three special features on the DVD. One is a gag reel. Another is “Never Alone: Heroes and Allies,” and the other is “Thank You, Georgia: Stargirl.” They’re very enjoyable. You don’t have to have watched previous seasons of the show to enjoy this one, but I think it helps a great deal because there are many characters and plot points. I can’t wait for season 3!

“Batman: Year One – Commemorative Edition (4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + Digital) [4K UHD]” Review by Suzanne 11/1/21

I watched and reviewed this movie back in 2011 when it first came out.. It’s a really great Batman movie – better than most of the live action films. It has a great cast. Back then, we had no idea that Ben McKenzie, who voices Bruce/Batman in this movie, was about to take on the role of Commissioner Gordon in “Gotham” three years later! He does a great job, along with the fabulous Bryan Cranston (“Breaking Bad”, “Your Honor”) as Gordon, The talented Eliza Dushku (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Doll House,” etc.) as Selina/Catwoman, the late Alex Rocco (“Magic City’), who’s perfectly cast as Falcone,  and Katee Sackhoff (“The Flash,” “Longmire”) who has a fairly small part as Detective Essen. Too bad they don’t make more Batman movies with this cast and these writers, or even a series. It’s certainly not the Batman I grew up with. Commissioner Gordon is full of angst and fighting spirit. He’s also really buff and works out a lot. He’s almost a superhero himself. There’s a very exciting scene towards the end, involving a baby that will keep you on the edge of your seat for sure.  The artwork is fantastic, of course, and even the end credits are pretty nifty.

This new set has two disks and a code. You can watch it in 4K Ultra HD if you have one of those type of players and TVs; or on regular Blu-ray as I did; or use the code to watch it online. No matter how you watch it, you should love it. If you’ve already seen it, it’s worth watching a second time. The DVDs were remastered for these new technologies. The picture quality is great.  You can see more details below, including the many special features. There are new ones that they’ve made; it’s not just the same old features that were on the previous DVD from 2011.  Enjoy it and give it to your teen or older Batman fan at the holidays.

Originally released on Blu-ray and DVD in 2011, Batman: Year One is based on the landmark 1987 DC titles from 12-time Eisner Award winner and Eisner Award Hall of Fame member Frank Miller and illustrator David Mazzucchelli. The film depicts young Bruce Wayne’s return to Gotham City in his first attempts to fight injustice as a costumed Super Hero. Six-time EmmyŽ Award winner Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad, Trumbo, Your Honor) and Gotham star Ben McKenzie (Southland, The O.C.) lead a star-studded cast as Lieutenant James Gordon and Bruce Wayne/Batman, respectively. Eliza Dushku (Dollhouse, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) provides the voice of Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Katee Sackhoff (The Mandalorian, Battlestar Galactica) gives voice to Detective Sarah Essen, and the late Alex Rocco (The Godfather) is the voice of crime lord Carmine Falcone. Lauren Montgomery (Wonder Woman, Voltron: Legendary Defender) and Sam Liu (Batman: Soul of the Dragon, Superman: Red Son) co-directed Batman: Year One from a script penned by Academy Award® nominee Tab Murphy (Gorillas in the Mist, Disney’s Tarzan). Review of “Walker: Season One” DVD

DVD Review!

Walker: Season One DVD cover

“Walker: Season One” Review by Suzanne 10/25/21

I wasn’t sure at first whether I would like this series. I love Jared Padalecki’s work on “Supernatural” and “The Gilmore Girls,” so that’s why I tuned in. The cast is great, but at first it seemed pretty mediocre. Then it got better pretty quickly. I can see why it’s a hit for The CW. There is  plenty of drama, action and humor. If you’re expecting anything like the old show that starred Chuck Norris, then you’ll be very disappointed. To me, that’s a good thing because I didn’t really like the old show. He was more of a lone wolf than this Walker, who has a whole family as well as friends and co-workers.

This Cordell Walker is tormented and grieving at the beginning of the season. His wife was murdered and he’s been undercover a long time. He’s distant from his family, and they all resent him. There’s a lot of great conflict.  I really love the characters in the show. They’re what make it. Even though Cordell is the main character, he’s a bit of a likeable doofus sometimes. He doesn’t have all of the answers. That’s what makes him interesting.

You should check this show out and give it a chance. Season two starts this week on The CW!

There are some good Special Features about the show: a special called “Walker: Tragic Hero,” and another one that is really cool called “The Edge of the Coin,” plus the usual gag reel and deleted scenes.  I really enjoyed them.

WALKER: SEASON ONE
Street Date: October 26
Format: DVD
Description: WALKER, a reimagining of the long-running series “Walker, Texas Ranger,” stars Jared Padalecki (“Supernatural”) as Cordell Walker, a widower and father with his own moral code, who returns home to Austin, Texas after being undercover for nearly a year, only to discover there’s harder work to be done at home. Walker will attempt to reconnect with his creative and thoughtful son, August (Kale Culley, “Me, Myself and I”) and his headstrong, somewhat rebellious teenaged daughter, Stella (Violet Brinson, “Sharp Objects”) and navigate changes with the rest of the family. His ADA brother, William “Liam” (Keegan Allen, “Pretty Little Liars”) returned home from New York and stepped in during Walker’s absence, making it all the more difficult for Walker to resume his place in the family. The perceptive matriarch of the Walker clan, Abeline (Molly Hagan, “Herman’s Head”) doesn’t hesitate to speak her mind to keep everyone in line and their traditional rancher father, Bonham (Mitch Pileggi, “The X-Files”) isn’t much for long winded, sentimental prattling, but voices his opinion when it counts most. At work, Walker’s former colleague, Larry James, is now his Ranger Captain, (Coby Bell, “The Game”) and both men need time to adjust to their new dynamic. Walker finds unexpected common ground with his new partner, Micki Ramirez (one of the first women in Texas Rangers’ history) played by Lindsey Morgan (“The 100”). She knows there’s a lot at stake for her in this new job and is quick to school Walker on curbing his maverick ways. Walker’s not Micki’s only distraction, as her relationship with an old friend, Trey (played by Jeff Pierre, “Once Upon a Time”) becomes more serious. The series closely follows Walker as he tries to balance all the new details in his old life while growing increasingly suspicious about the circumstances surrounding his wife’s (Genevieve Padalecki) death.

Primetime TV Review: Mr. and Mrs. Murder

“Mr. and Mrs. Murder” Review on by Eva 10/10/2021

This show is an Australian miniseries based on the books of the same name. The series is about a married couple, Charlie Buchanan (Shaun Micallef) and Nicola Buchanan (Kat Stewart), who own an industrial cleaning company, so the police hire them to clean up crime scenes.

The couple are very good at their job, but they are also good at solving crimes. This show has a mix of comedy and drama that makes it fun to watch for those who love a good mystery. I really enjoyed this show and will add it to my DVR programming on Thursday night. I watch a lot of mystery movies and shows and can usually tell who committed the crime, but I couldn’t do it with this show.

I think that if you love mysteries mixed with a little comedy, you will enjoy this show. Shaun Nicollet and Kat Stewart have great chemistry and seem like a loving married couple.

I give this show a 5 out of 5 stars.

Review of “Ghosts”

The cast of "Ghosts" on CBS

“Ghosts” on CBS Review by Suzanne 10/10/21

I really want to love this show, but it’s just not funny enough for me. This is based on a British show of the same name, which you watch on HBO Max and Daily Motion. Frankly, I find the British one a little funnier. Neither one is hilarious, though. To me, the main goal of a sitcom is to make me laugh. If I just sit here and smile, or chuckle occasionally, that’s not good enough. It’s not worth my time.

Rose McIver (“iZombie”) plays Samantha, and Utkarsh Ambudkar plays her husband, Jay. She inherits a big old house, so they decide to invest all of their money into fixing it up and making it into a bed and breakfast. Unbeknownst to Sam and Jay, the house is haunted by many ghosts from the past. When Sam hits her head, she can suddenly see and hear the ghosts. They become very annoying to her and her husband.

I do like shows about supernatural creatures, so that’s why I really wanted to like it. I like the characters, too. One ghost, Hetty, is a Victorian older woman (played by the marvelous Rebecca Wisocky). The ghost that stands out the most is Thorfin, a Viking (Devan Chandler Long). In the UK version, he was a caveman. This version of the show has a native American, Sasappis (RomĂĄn Zaragoza), who seems very interesting. I want to learn more about them, and that’s the main reason I added it to my DVR.

I’m crossing my fingers that it gets funnier as it goes along.

MORE INFORMATION:

GHOSTS is a single-camera comedy about Samantha and Jay, a cheerful freelance journalist and up-and-coming chef from the city, respectively, who throw both caution and money to the wind when they decide to convert a huge rundown country estate they inherited into a bed & breakfast—only to find it’s inhabited by the many spirits of deceased residents who now call it home. The departed souls are a close-knit, eclectic group that includes a saucy Prohibition-era lounge singer (Danielle Pinnock); a pompous 1700’s Militiaman (Brandon Scott Jones); a ‘60s hippie fond of hallucinogens (Sheila Carrasco); an overly upbeat ‘80s scout troop leader (Richie Moriarty); a cod-obsessed Viking explorer from 1009 (Devon Chandler Long); a slick ‘90s finance bro (Asher Grodman); a sarcastic and witty Native from the 1500s (Román Zaragoza); and a society woman and wife of an 1800’s robber baron who is Samantha’s ancestor (Rebecca Wisocky), to name a few. If the spirits were anxious about the commotion a renovation and B&B will create in their home, it’s nothing compared to when they realize Samantha is the first live person who can see and hear them.

Review of “FBI: International”

TV Review!

"FBI: International" cast on CBS

“FBI: International” on CBS Review by Suzanne 9/25/21

I have to admit that I’m not a fan of the “FBI” shows. I just find them a bit boring and formulaic. They have some good actors, but they just don’t excite me very much. If I had nothing better to do, I would watch them, or the “NCIS” shows, or the “Law and Order” shows, or…. Zzzzzzzzz    I’m sorry! I dozed off a second there, just trying to remember all of these franchise shows. (Ha ha!)

These series all seem geared toward action junkies or old people. I mean REALLY old because I’m 60, which is pretty old, and they don’t hold any great thrill for me. But I know they’re very popular. They must be – why else would they now have THREE of them, all on the same night? I guess the three hours of programming is a good match against shows like “The Masked Singer” on FOX.

This new series is set in Europe. Unlike “FBI” and “FBI: Most Wanted,” the show has mostly young people. There is no wise older person to show the young people how it should be done. That might be a mistake, but we’ll have to wait and see how the stories play out.

I watched the three-episode premiere this week (tying all three series together), and I was impressed with the fact that I could watch all three without really knowing any of the other characters on the shows. They make it really easy to follow. You could watch any of these shows and not worry about episodes that you missed. They’re all pretty self-contained.

The international aspect of the show makes it very interesting. They have to deal with things that the other shows don’t, such as worrying about local law enforcement more and not being able to carry guns. I like that detail of it a lot.

Check it out and see if it appeals to you.

MORE INFORMATION:

From Emmy Award winner Dick Wolf and the team behind FBI and the “Law & Order” brand, faced-paced drama FBI: INTERNATIONAL is the third iteration of the successful FBI brand that follows the elite operatives of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s International Fly Team. Headquartered in Budapest, they travel the world with the mission of tracking and neutralizing threats against American citizens wherever they may be, putting their lives on the line to protect the U.S. and its people. The Fly Team’s Special Agent Scott Forrester, their accomplished and dedicated leader, puts his missions ahead of his personal life and is rarely seen without the team’s “secret weapon” – their trusty Schutzhund dog, Tank. Second in command is Special Agent Jamie Kellett, not afraid to tussle – in an alley or courtroom – and her extensive network of informants is a powerful resource. Special Agent Andre Raines shines in the field and makes good use of his accounting background in tracking criminal enterprises’ moving money; and the group’s newest member is Special Agent Cameron Vo, a competitive West Point grad who excels at interrogation and strategy. A key part of the mix is the unflappable Europol Agent Katrin Jaeger, a multilinguistic liaison between the FBI Fly Team and each host country they inhabit. Always at the scene where American interests are at risk, FBI: INTERNATIONAL is a globe-trotting depiction of law enforcement overseas.

Primetime TV Review: Ordinary Joe

TV Review!

“Ordinary Joe” Review on by Eva 9/24/2021

I decided to watch Ordinary Joe because it sounded interesting… but when I watched the show, I found it to be confusing.

The show centers around Joe Kimbreau (James Wolk), who graduates from college and has a choice to make of what to do with the rest of his graduation day. Joe’s first option ]is to ask Amy (Natalie Martinez), whom he just met, on a date. Joe’s second choice is to go with his girlfriend, Jenny (Elizabeth Lail), to the beach for a talk.  His third choice for the day is to go to dinner with his family. The show then follows Joe’s three possible choices or timelines. If he goes with Amy on a date, he becomes a famous musician, marries her and they try to have a child; if he goes with Jenny, he becomes a nurse with a disabled son and an unhappy marriage. If Joe chooses dinner with his family, he becomes a cop who is single but still wonders what happened to Amy and Jenny.

This show is a bit confusing because it switches randomly from Joe’s three parallel lives, and you have to really pay attention to understand what Joe is doing and which life he is living. I really like James Wolk as Joe – he makes the best of what he is given and gives the audience a reason to root for Joe, hoping that he will solve his problems.

I think this show needs to work on being a little less confusing… maybe if they dealt with one of Joe’s lives in each episode, instead of all three lives in the same episode, it would work better. I think the show will do okay because it comes after “The Voice” on Monday nights. I will keep watching it to see if it improves, but for now I will give it 3 out of 5 stars.

The Equalizer: Season One DVD cover

“The Equalizer: Season One” Review by Suzanne 9/15/21

This is a vigilante show, which is similar to a superhero show. There’s a thin line that sometimes can be hard to find. Batman is a vigilante, but he has no super powers.  Robyn McCall (Queen Latifah) is a former CIA agent who now secretly helps people who are victims of evil doers (especially female victims).  She has a team helping her, including her former CIA handler (played by the amazing Chris Noth). She tries to redeem herself with each person she helps – she has a lot to make up for from her shady past. She also lives with her Aunt Vi (the always-underrated Lorraine Toussaint), who helps her raise her teenaged daughter, Delilah.

There’s a lot of great action in the show, but the violence has been toned down quite a bit since the 80’s version of this series.  Perhaps they think that female audience members won’t like it. At any rate, it gives them time to focus more on story and characters. The first season was a big hit, and the second season is doing pretty well. CBS is packed with remakes and reboots, but this show stands out as one of the best. Queen Latifah herself deserves a lot of the credit, but the writing is also very good.

The DVD has some nice extras: 3 behind-the-scenes specials, as well as the regular deleted scenes and gag reel. This would make a good gift for any teen or adult.

THE EQUALIZER: SEASON ONE
Street Date: September 21
Format: DVD
Description: THE EQUALIZER is a reimagining of the classic series following Robyn McCall, an enigmatic woman with a mysterious background who uses her extensive skills as a former CIA operative to help those with nowhere else to turn. McCall presents to most as an average single mom who is quietly raising her teenage daughter. But to a trusted few, she is The Equalizer – an anonymous guardian angel and defender of the downtrodden, who’s also dogged in her pursuit of personal redemption. Robyn’s clandestine work remains a secret from her smart and observant daughter, Delilah, and her aunt Vi, who lives with Robyn to help her balance life as a working mother. Joining Robyn as champions of justice are William Bishop, her former CIA handler and longtime friend; Melody “Mel” Bayani, an edgy bar owner and a colleague from Robyn’s past; and Harry Keshegian, a paranoid and brilliant white-hat hacker. As Robyn aids the oppressed and exploited, her work garners the attention of shrewd NYPD Detective Marcus Dante, who doggedly seeks to uncover the identity of the vigilante known as The Equalizer.

“NCIS: Hawaii” on CBS Review by Suzanne 9/15/21

I love shows filmed on Oahu because we lived there for three wonderful years. I hope to go back one day. It really is paradise, like they say. I would look out and just be constantly amazed at where I was and what I was seeing. The actors in shows like this, and “Magnum PI” and “Hawaii Five-0” are so lucky to live and work there.

They do a good job showing the island – not just the tourist or downtown areas, but also where the locals go. They also show the food, the language and some of its cultural traditions. The cast is very diverse. Star Vanessa Lachey is half Filipina (there are many Filipino-Americans and other Asian descendants in Hawaii). The rest of the cast is from New Zealand, Canada and other places, with ancestry from Lebanon, the Pacific Islands, Hawaii, Polynesia (New Zealand), United Arab Emirates and more. It’s great that they have a woman in charge, too, which is a first for the NCIS franchise.  CBS has really made great strides in its casting the past few years to put women and people of color in the forefront of their shows.

Do I even have to mention that the stories and characters are great? Of course they are. It’s NCIS. The writing is always top-notch. Someone in the military is murdered, and they investigate, and they find the killer (and usually more than they bargained for). There’s going to be action, good-natured joking around, and some romance. Each of the characters in the regular cast has compelling backstories. What more could you ask for? Check it out Mondays.

"Magnum P.I.: Season Three" DVD cover

“Magnum P.I.: Season Three” Review by Suzanne 9/10/21

It took me a while to warm up to this series because it’s so different from the original. Jay Hernandez, a handsome young Latino actor, is a very different Thomas Magnum than the one played back in the 80’s by Tom Selleck. It makes sense because TV has changed a lot. It’s no longer mostly-white and male. Most shows are ensemble pieces – the star of the show is no longer a lone wolf. Hernandez has a nice laid-back energy but is still a good hero.  The main difference is that Higgins (Perdita Weeks) is a sexy woman, so she and Magnum have a lot of sexual chemistry. In this season, they’re finally partners, working together in the PI agency.

Because of COVID, there are only 16 episodes this season. Also, the DVD features are rather thin. There’s a gag reel, deleted scenes and not much else. That’s too bad. I wonder if that’s due to the shortened season?

This would still make a good gift for any TV fans. There is a lot of great action, comedy, drama and romance in the show. Also, Roger E. Mosley (the original TC) guest stars in one memorable episode. Check it out!

MAGNUM P.I.: SEASON THREE
Street Date: September 14
Format: DVD
Description: MAGNUM P.I. is a modern take on the classic series centering on Thomas Magnum, a decorated former Navy SEAL who, upon returning home from Afghanistan, repurposes his military skills to become a private investigator. A charming rogue, an American hero and a die-hard Detroit Tigers fan, Magnum lives in a guest cottage on Robin’s Nest, the luxurious estate where he works as a security consultant to supplement his P.I. business. The “majordomo” of the property is Juliet Higgins, a beautiful and commanding disavowed MI:6 agent whose second job is to keep Magnum in line, with the help of her two Dobermans. When Magnum needs back-up on a job, he turns to his trusted buddies and fellow POW survivors, Theodore “TC” Calvin, a former Marine chopper pilot who runs Island Hoppers, a helicopter tour business, and Orville “Rick” Wright, a former Marine door-gunner-turned-impresario of Oahu’s coolest nightclub and the most connected man on the island. Suspicious of Magnum’s casual attitude and presence at his crime scenes, Detective Gordon Katsumoto finds that he and Magnum are more alike than either of them care to admit. One of Magnum’s biggest supporters is Teuila “Kumu” Tuileta, the unofficial “House Mom” and cultural curator of Robin’s Nest. With keys to a vintage Ferrari in one hand, aviator sunglasses in the other, and an Old Düsseldorf longneck chilling in the fridge, Thomas Magnum is back on the case!

SEAL Team: Season Four DVD cover

“SEAL Team: Season Four” Review by Suzanne 9/1/21

This is the kind of standard action show with interesting personalities and lots of explosions, chases, gunfights and all those things some viewers enjoy. The characters travel to all of these different countries and deal with terrorists, but the show focuses a lot on the characters, their problems, their families and their evolution in the show. Leader Jason (David Boreanaz) has been leading these teams a long time and it’s wearing on him. He still has to lead the others as they go through their own troubles. It’s essentially a male soap opera with lots of action. If you like shows like “NCIS: Los Angeles,” you should love this one as well.

It has a very devoted fan based and ranks high on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the broadcast TV ratings declined quite a bit in the last season, so now they’ve moved it to Paramount+.

The DVD set should be a great present for anyone who likes action, adventure and good characters. It has all of the usual extras: audio commentary, deleted scenes and three different features: “Brothers in Arms,” “Meeting of the Minds,” and “If You Build It.”

NCIS: New Orleans: The Complete Series DVD

“NCIS: New Orleans: The Complete Series” Review by Suzanne 8/25/21

It’s a shame that this show only had 7 seasons. I don’t know why the NCIS audiences never really warmed to it. Perhaps it’s just that three NCIS shows at once is too much. Then again, they did start NCIS: Hawaii this year. I don’t know why they put the various NCIS shows on different nights, rather than making one programming block night the way they do with FBI, and the way NBC does with the Chicago One shows. I think part of the reason they canceled the show is that they’re trying to make their shows more diverse, and it doesn’t look so good to have the three NCIS shows, all headed by old white guys. The sinking ratings certainly didn’t help.

Whatever the reason, it ended, and it makes me sad. I do love Scott Bakula in every show he does (even though we’re both getting older, and he’s not as cute as he used to be). It’s sad that they had to shoot their last season during the pandemic and only had 16 episodes. I loved the rest of the cast, too. Three of them I knew from other shows, so they really probably a lot of experience to their characters. The writing for the show was always top-notch, and the city of New Orleans was like another character on the show. The whole show had a different tone because of being set in New Orleans. It’s a shame they lost one of their major characters, Chris (Lucas Black), but at least the series did have a happy ending this year.

I’m so grateful to have this complete set of the series, so I can rewatch it all at once (or binge as the kids say). It’s great to see all of the various actors that came and went during the season. I hope that we see Scott Bakula again in something else good really soon.

There are a ton of special features, but most of them are the same ones we saw in the previous seasonal sets (aside from some new audio commentary). The set is really for people who don’t have all the other DVDs. I don’t think they’ll be coming out with a Blu-ray version, so you might as well buy this one. It would make a great gift, too.

Format: DVD
Description: NCIS: NEW ORLEANS is a drama about the local field office that investigates criminal cases involving military personnel in The Big Easy, a city known for its music, entertainment and decadence. Leading the team is Special Agent Dwayne Pride, a.k.a. “King,” a native of New Orleans who is driven by his need to do what is right. Working with Pride is tough and acerbic Special Agent Tammy Gregorio, a former FBI Agent who was sent to New Orleans to investigate NCIS and upon completion joined Pride’s team, Forensic Agent Sebastian Lund, a brilliant scientist who left the lab and, after much training, became an agent, Special Agent Hannah Khoury, a seasoned agent who specializes in international counter-intelligence and has spent most of her career on overseas assignments; and Quentin Carter, a former Marine with a wry sense of humor and an independent streak, who makes it a point never to stay in one place long enough to get too comfortable. Supporting them is coroner Dr. Loretta Wade, who is as eccentric as she is smart, and Investigative Computer Specialist Patton Plame, an animated and talented hacker. Helping Pride is Rita Devereaux, who after a successful career as an attorney with the Department of Justice, returns to her hometown of New Orleans to pursue a relationship with him. This colorful city that harbors a dark side is a magnet for service personnel on leave, and when overindulgence is followed by trouble, Pride’s team is at its best.

NCIS: New Orleans: The Final Season

“NCIS: New Orleans: The Final Season” Review by Suzanne 8/25/21

It’s a shame that this show only had 7 seasons. I’m really going to miss it. I think that they tried so hard to emulate the feel of New Orleans that they made it too different from the other two NCIS series. It didn’t the fast-pace and high-energy that the others had. It was more laid back.

Whatever the reason, this was the last season, and it makes me sad. It’s really a shame that they had to shoot their last season during the pandemic and only had 16 episodes. I love star Scott Bakula (Pride) and the rest of the cast, too.  It’s a shame they lost one of their major characters, Chris (Lucas Black), last year – but at least the series did have a happy ending this year.

Like most of the shows on TV today, each of the characters have their own issues to work through, so they spent this season working on those. I hope that we get to see some of these actors show up occasionally on the other NCIS series.  The DVD set is a good one, with three special features: “Season 7: Pride and Joy,” “The Best of Times” and “The Perfect Pair.” I’m looking forward to watching the complete series set, which should have more special features. This DVD should make a great gift for anyone.

NCIS: Los Angeles: Season 12 DVD cover

“NCIS: Los Angeles: Season 12” Review by Suzanne 8/20/21

This was always my least favorite of the NCIS franchise. I think it’s because they seem to spend a lot more time traveling to desert countries and fighting terrorists than the other shows. I also think they have a lot more action or violence, and there is a lot more macho military bravado going on with the characters. The trouble with shows that have so much violence or action-oriented stories is that they always feel they have to keep topping themselves each season, which can get ridiculous after awhile. Stopping a nuclear threat is one example from this season where it really veered into the unbelievable.

Other than that, it has the same interesting stories and characters as most dramas on CBS. I remember when this show started, so it’s shocking to see that it’s been on for twelve years already. I hope they can keep going with the show for a few more years. I love the way the team works together, especially G and Sam, and Deeks and Kensi. Hetty came back to the show, too.

The DVD should make a great gift for anyone who likes lots of action.  It includes audio commentary (provided by Daniela Rush (Kensi), a feature about Rush directing an episode, deleted scenes and a feature about Season 12 “Greater by the Dozen.” They’re very fun to watch.

S.W.A.T. Season 4 DVD cover

“S.W.A.T. Season 4” Review by Suzanne 8/20/21

This show always has a lot of great action, led by series star Shemar Moore (Hondo). Honestly, I just love him…I’ve been a fan ever since he was on “The Young and the Restless.” I even got to meet him once and get my picture taken with him at a charity event. He’s always outstanding on his shows, including “Criminal Minds” and now this one.  What’s amazing is that when he first started, he was not a great actor. However, he was not only gorgeous, but he just had that certain something that makes great TV stars. Also, he clearly worked hard on his acting skills because now he’s as good as anyone else. From all accounts, he’s a really great guy, too. He does a great job of keeping in contact with his fans on social media.

This season, they added a new character: the global pandemic. They chose to use the real-life drama to make drama for their show, and it worked. Many shows just ignored it or only dealt with it briefly. It was brave of them to do it. They also dealt with other real world issues, such as white supremacy, protesters, sex trafficking and the public’s current attitudes towards the police as well as personal issues each of the team members were going through.

This is one of the few reboot/remake shows that CBS has done that is even better than the original series. The reason is obviously Shemar Moore.  This DVD set would make a great gift of anyone.  It lacks special features. It only has a blooper reel and one behind-the-scenes feature: Special Tactics: Tanker Takedown.

NCIS: The Eighteenth Season DVD cover

“NCIS: The Eighteenth Season” Review by Suzanne 8/15/21

Somehow, this show keeps going on and on. This is the last season where Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon) leads the pack. He’s retiring and will only be seen occasionally in the Nineteenth season. Gary Cole takes over the NCIS team. The interesting thing is that Harmon is only 5 years older than Cole.

The show’s cast has gone through many changes. I believe Sean Murray (Tim) is now the only remaining regular character on the show (since it started in 2003; however, he didn’t join the show until episode 7). He came in as a very junior member of the team, so that seems really strange. I don’t think NCIS will last very long without Gibbs. The ratings have been going down steadily this season. Maybe they’ll let them get to Season 20 and stop. That would be nice.

I think the show is still plenty enjoyable because they have new regular characters and new cases. As long as you enjoy the show, does it really matter if Gibbs is till around? Gary Cole is an excellent actor and a good replacement. I think it’s hard for fans to lose Ducky and Gibbs (both retiring). The show is really still feeling the loss of Tony, Ziva and Abby.

Back to season 18. They packed a lot of great action and story into this season.  There are only 16 episodes, due to COVID. There are quite a few deaths of minor characters, and another regular cast member leaves. The show always has many mysteries, twists, shootings, fighting, explosions and more. Check it out!

Blue Bloods: The Eleventh Season

“Blue Bloods: The Eleventh Season” Review by Suzanne 8/14/21

This is always a good family soap opera. It’s also a cop show, but that’s incidental, in a way. The family in this show really could work anywhere. What makes the show interesting is how they relate to one another in their working-class, New York City way. Tom Selleck is the alpha male in his pack, but he’s also a loving father and grandfather.

Even after eleven seasons, they don’t seem to run out of ideas for stories. In part, that’s because the cast is so large. There’s always more to tell about the Reagan clan. They introduced a new family member this year: Joe Hill, son of the late Joe Reagan.

It’s no surprise that the show’s demographics are older and more conservative.  However, the show does not shy away from discussing today’s issues, particularly those that involve the police. This season they argue about police brutality.

The DVD has deleted scenes and two features: “The Story of the Reagans: Season 11” and “Shades of Blue.” It would make a great gift for anyone who is fond of the police or Tom Selleck (especially those over 60).

Pennyworth: The Complete 2nd Season [Blu-ray] DVD cover

“Pennyworth: The Complete 2nd Season [Blu-ray]” Review by Suzanne 7/14/21

I apologize for the lateness of this review…they usually send me these weeks in advance, but this one came a day late.

I love this show. Then again, I love anything remotely related to Batman. Also, Bruno Heller is co-creator of the series, and he developed the TV series “Gotham” on FOX, which I also loved. Both shows are prequels for “Batman” but have their own unique stories and twisted histories.  Unlike “Gotham,” this series has very little to do with Batman. It centers on the Cold War history of Alfred, Batman’s “butler,” and Batman’s parents, Bruce and Martha.  This is all original to the show, although I’m sure they were heavily influenced by both “Gotham” and the comics.

Yet this is still a fantasy show because there are public executions in London, and a secret society called The Raven Society tries to take over the British government.  We know from “Gotham” that Alfred is a former SAS officer, so they’ve expanded on that quite a bit. He has PTSD in this series but runs a security firm. In this season season, he runs a black market club in Soho, and he might be moving to America soon.

The first season was very good. I’ve enjoyed this second season as well. Like the first season, it has a lot of action (violence), intrigue, and complex stories. There are many characters to keep track of, but not too many. I didn’t find it hard to follow, or boring. I love these kinds of shows.

I hope it gets a third season as well. The general theory out on the net seems to be that the show will move to HBO Max.  We’ll have to wait and see what happens there.

Unfortunately, there are no features at all. That’s too bad.

Pennyworth: The Complete Second Season

Available on Blu-ray & DVD 7/13/21

A year after the explosive events of last season, England finds itself embroiled in a devastating civil war, with the powerful, neo-fascist Raven Union, led by Lord Harwood (Jason Flemyng) threatening to control the entire country. North London remains one of the few resistance holdouts remaining. It’s here in the West End Neutral Zone, that we find Alfred Pennyworth (Jack Bannon). After years in the British Army, his training with the SAS has taught him to be a cynical optimist – expecting the worst, but knowing that he can handle it. Now running The Delaney, a black-market Soho club that welcomes everyone, regardless of their politics, Alfred, with his SAS mates, “Bazza” (Hainsley Lloyd Bennett) and “Daveboy” (Ryan Fletcher), is now in search of a way out – before London, and his country, burns itself to the ground. And he’s got his eye on America.

Primetime DVD Review: “Your Honor”

DVD Review!

"Your Honor" DVD cover

“Your Honor” Review by Suzanne 6/10/21

This was a very good series on Showtime. It’s what they call a “limited series,” meaning it’s just 10 episodes and there will be no more…at least, as far as we know. Anyway, Bryan Cranston stars as an upstanding New Orleans judge who has to bend or break the rules when his son gets involved in a hit-and-run.

I enjoyed the show when I saw a few episodes on Showtime, but it’s nice to have the whole series to watch. It’s very gripping and complex, and the performances are outstanding. It has a nice twist at the end. I think that this series is one that you’ll either love or hate.

Aside from a few deleted scenes, there are no extras on the DVD. That’s too bad. It would have been nice to hear interviews with the cast, writer, directors and more. Perhaps they’ll come out with a better DVD version later with all of that.

Unbeknownst to Adam, the victim is the son of much-feared crime boss Jimmy Baxter (Michael Stuhlbarg, Call Me By Your Name) and his wife, Gina (Emmy® and Golden Globe® nominee Hope Davis, The Special Relationship), who are both out for vengeance and will not stop until justice is served on their own terms.

Primetime TV Review: Small Fortune

TV Review!

“Small Fortune” Review on by Eva 6/3/2021

I enjoy watching game shows so when I saw a commercial that a new game show called Small Fortune was going to be on I said I can’t wait to watch a new game show.

This game show is based on a British game show. The American version of the show is hosted by Lil Rel Howery who does a wonderful job as host of the show. He is funny and very encouraging to the contestants as they play these very difficult games. The games are difficult because they are the size of doll house furniture and the teams of three contestants have to play several rounds of these tiny games to win big money. One example of a game is a contestant must stack six tiny aluminum cans in one minute to win the money. The contestant gets one free chance to practice the game and if they want more practice games they must pay an amount from their possible winnings from that round. When the team of three contestants done playing they must play the big heist bonus game in which the team must work together to open a tiny safe in two minutes. If they open the safe they take home the money they earned in previous rounds.

I wanted to like this show, but I don’t because of two reasons. The first being that watching the team play these tiny games makes me very tense as I watch them try and fail several times before they possibly win the game. The second reason I don’t like it is because its missing the most important element of a game show it doesn’t allow the viewer at home to participate in the show. The viewers are bored by the show because they can’t answer questions or feel invested in the show in some way. I give this show a two out of five stars just because the host is good.

NBC’S “SMALL FORTUNE” TAKES COMEDY AND COMPETITION TO NEW LEVELS WITH PREMIERE SET FOR MONDAY, MAY 31 AT 10 P.M. ET/PT

Game Show Marks Lil Rel Howery’s Return to NBC as Teams Test Their Skills for $250,000 Prize in Miniature-Sized Competition

¡ “Small Fortune,” NBC’s newest team competition game show hosted by Lil Rel Howery, premieres on Monday, May 31 at 10 p.m. ET/PT. The series is a British import based on Youngest Media’s popular U.K. format and is unlike any team competition ever seen on U.S. television.

¡ In each heart-pounding episode, teams of three from various backgrounds, including first responders and Olympians from around the country, work together to earn a shot at competing for the $250,000 cash prize in the “Big Little Heist” finale game.

¡ To get there, each team must prove their skills on miniature playing fields from a shrunken sushi conveyor belt with tiny chopsticks (“Teeny Sashimi”) to a mini Ellis Island (“Statue of Liberteeny”). Challenges will require considerable dexterity and intense focus because with games this small, there’s no room for error as the slightest miscalculation or tremble may result in losing tens of thousands of dollars.

¡ In the eight-episode series, Howery raises the stakes by mixing encouragement with his brand of laughs to keep the players on their toes and audiences equally as anxious and entertained.

¡ Howery is fresh off his successful HBO comedy special “Lil Rel Howery: Live in Crenshaw,” which was rated the #1 hourlong comedy special of 2019 by Vulture.com. In film, he is perhaps best known for his roles as TSA agent Rod Williams in the Oscar-winning “Get Out,” Charlie in the Netflix smash “Bird Box, and more recently as Wayne in the Oscar-nominated “Judas and The Black Messiah.” On the small screen, he starred as Bobby, brother to Jerrod Carmichael, on the critically acclaimed NBC series “The Carmichael Show,” also starring Tiffany Haddish as his ex-wife. In addition to making an impression with his own comedy series, “Rel” on Fox, Howery has lent his talents to “Insecure” on HBO, “Southside” on Comedy Central and more.

¡ “Small Fortune” is co-produced by Universal Television Alternative Studio and entertainment studio Youngest Media, which created and produced the U.K. format.

¡ Lucas Church and David Flynn will serve as executive producers for Youngest Media alongside Steve Barry and Joe Braswell, who will serve as executive producers for Kelchris and showrunners for the series. Lil Rel Howery also executive produces.
