THIS STILL NEEDS EXTENSIVE EDITING!

[car crashes]

Sounds like attempted murder.

Your plan was genius.

Frankly, I was surprised how easy it was.

Not so fast, mister.

Strangely enough, I’m getting a second wind.

Are you ever not actively flirting?

No, not when it comes to you.

[girls squealing]

How do you stand living your life so loud?

Hayley is going to be my wife. And it can’t happen soon enough.

Bill and I were supposed to be together forever. That was the pact.

As far as I’m concerned, my father is dead.

The Duprees will be attending the wedding as a family, including you, Dani. Duprees don’t cower. We don’t hide. If Bill has the stones to marry that little heifer in our community, then he can do it while looking into our pissed-off faces.

On behalf of Bill and Hayley, I would like to welcome and thank you all for coming out tonight in celebration of their union. Your love and support means the world. Marriage is a lifelong partnership, a promise of love, respect, honor, and trust in each other through the good and the bad. It is a covenant not to be taken into lightly. Today, among these witnesses, Bill and Hayley embark on a journey to husband and wife. If anyone here objects to the union of these two people, speak now or forever hold your peace.

Me. I object.

Dani, no!

[guests clamoring]

[gunshot]

[guests scream]

Danielle, stop this!

Put that gun away this instant!

Eva: You are looking at Nicole Richardson’s brand-new temporary assistant.

[screams]

Yes. Okay. I’m so excited. This is it, honey. Ooh, it’s the day I, I’ve dreamed about. [chuckles]

You are finally gonna be where you should have been all along. In your father’s house.

Mm-hmm. My biological father.

Hmm, Dr. Big Shot thought he could just wipe us away, forget you and I exist. Well, Ted Richardson and his high-and-mighty wife are in for a rude awakening. He’s gonna pay for trying to erase my baby girl Eva. Hmm, for trying to erase me.

What are you doing? Please, Danielle. Danielle, please.

Chelsea:  Oh, my God.

Don’t get in the middle of this.

Dani, you need to let these people out of here.

They can go. I have unfinished business with these two.

You heard her. Let’s go.

[clattering]

[guests gasping]

Now, Dani…

If everybody stays out of my way, son-in-law, things will be fine.

Check the flowers.

Dani…

That was a warning shot. But now that I have your attention, there are certain sentiments I’d like to convey.

Just put the gun down, and we could…

We-we can talk about this? Too late. I have a choice to make. Do I put this next bullet right between your two lying eyes, Bill? Or… Well, imagine the damage I could do if I destroyed this pest. Who would drop in for dinner at our table but wasn’t satisfied until she took my man from my bed. That would probably hurt more… longer… maybe for the rest of your sad, pathetic life. Decisions, decisions. ♪ ♪

Sorry for holding up your table. I’m sure she’ll be here any second.

What about your friends, the couple?

Naomi and Jacob couldn’t make it– family deal– but Ashley and I got to celebrate. It’s her first week at Garland Memorial. Best new nurse in the D.C. metropolitan area.

Nice.

Just can’t figure out what’s keeping her.

Maybe there’s an emergency.

And they pulled a newbie in on it?

Maybe, yeah, but I’m thinking it’s her first week.

It’s probably not life-or-death.

Thanks.

That’s just your water breaking. It’s perfectly normal.

Oh. Uh, yeah, sure it is, and in the movies this is when you would get your bag and head to the hospital, right? I’m having this baby now.

No, not now.

[scoffs] Tell that to the baby.

Try to relax, try to relax.

This is an elevator. Why is the baby in such a rush?

Isn’t there something we can do to…?

Everything is going to be fine, okay? We just need to get this mama- to-be to Labor and Delivery.

That might be easier said than done.

Oh, something’s wrong.

What could go wrong? We’re gonna be moving in just a minute. Right, Andre?

The elevator’s stuck.

Dani: Cheater. Home-wrecker. Which should it be? Don’t hide behind him.

Look, Dani, just put the gun down and tell me what you want.

All I ever wanted was you.

Bill, you don’t have to…

Dani: Speak less.

Bill: Hey. Whatever it is you hope to accomplish here…

Tick it off my bucket list. First, ruin this one’s wedding day. Next… well, let’s see where the day takes us, huh?

For the love of God, Vernon, do something.

Danielle, sweetheart, please.

Just tell us what you want so we can get on…

Everything you took from me. I had a life I loved, a career when I met you. I was so young and eager to be the wife you wanted, give you children… our beautiful children. Every woman you wanted me to be… I became. Everything you wanted, I wanted for you. Financed and feted. I helped birth your dreams into a reality. Hell, your meteoric rise to the cream of the crop was bankrolled and financed and endorsed by the Duprees.

It’s my job.

That’s my mother.

Danielle, we’ll discuss this in private after you put down that gun.

Mm-mm, no. There are too many secrets around here. Like this one.

I have a name.

Oh, you have a few. None of them very nice.

I’m Hayley Hamilton.

Like hell. Until you are pronounced wife, you don’t get to have the same last name as my children.

You’re Hayley Lawson. Finish the story. Friendless orphan who inflicted herself on my family, used my daughter for a free pass to the good life, made herself at home, and wrecked everything I’ve built.

I know you think that’s…

If you knew what I’m thinking right now, you would be very quiet! Better.

Okay, honey, we are about to become besties.

What’s your name?

Alix– with an “I,” not that that matters right now.

I’m Ashley Morgan.

You’re a nurse.

Please tell me you’re a doctor.

Sorry. Andre Richardson, photographer.

God, don’t you dare take my picture. Don’t even ask.

I’ll do something more useful instead. I’m calling 911.

Good idea.

Yeah.

Now breathe, breathe.

[breathing deeply]

In through your nose, out through your mouth. That’s right. Don’t say it.

Yeah, no reception.

Alix: Keep trying. Because delivering in an elevator is not part of my birth plan.

[groans]

Okay, another contraction.

Come on, get down.

Feels like they’re closer together.

Andre, give me your coat. We’re gonna get her more comfortable.

What, y-you mean the baby’s coming?

[groans]

Oh… That did not sound good. That sounds like this baby is ready, all right, which is perfectly fine because Andre and I are here and we’re gonna help you. Nothing to worry about. Let’s do this.

The day I gave birth to you, your father was the same as now– nowhere to be found, not that I was surprised. Ted made it quite clear that he wanted nothing to do with us.

From the very beginning.

Mm-hmm. Soon as I got pregnant, Ted got in the wind. Nicole Dupree had that man wrapped around her finger. He didn’t spend one hot minute worrying about you or me.

Oh… much as it breaks my heart to see that look on your face– the truth, honey, that hurt– it’s best that you know the truth. Ted Richardson didn’t give a damn about whether we lived or died, and he still doesn’t. [chuckles wryly] You know, if he could’ve just stayed the way that he was when we first met. Oh, my God, he was… I never met a man like him before. And he never loved a girl like me.

I’m sorry for what he did to you, Mama. To us. To us. But now that I’m working for Nicole, I’ll be on the inside.

[chuckles] That is my baby. Goal-oriented, just like her mama. We’ll make things right.

Dani: It’s a funny thing about names. Once you are Mrs. Hamilton, if this fiasco goes that far, no one will tell you what they really think of you, so…

Dani, you’ve gone far enough.

Oh, I’ve just scratched the surface, Bill. I’m tired of holding my tongue. And why should I? I’m the one holding the gun.

And what will you do with it?

She’s putting it down. Right, Danielle?

After they’re done begging.

For our lives?

My forgiveness. On your knees.

She’ll be here. She’s like that. She gets wrapped up in her work. Whatever she’s doing, she’s into it 100%, so I’ll give her another half hour and then I’ll start to worry. But it’s probably nothing.

Paperwork, changing bedpans, no big deal at all. That’s right, just breathe with me. Ready?

[Ashley and Alix breathing deeply]

Hey, I don’t know if anybody can hear us, but, uh, we’ve got three people in the elevator.

T-Tell them there’s about to be one more.

[groans]

Okay, breathe, breathe, breathe. Ready? Look at me, look at me. Ready?

[both breathing deeply]

Tell me you’ve done this before.

Are you kidding me? You’ve got nothing to worry about, okay? We got this. Just keep breathing.

[both breathing deeply]

Doing great. That’s right, that’s right, take a break now.

Why do I feel like I’m feeding you to the lions?

You aren’t. This is the opportunity we’ve been planning. And as Nicole’s assistant, I’ll be in the perfect position to get close to her and…

…to her and Ted. And we’ll make him answer for the awful way he treated you. All the money they got, how they live. He didn’t even send child support. You deserved better.

And you deserved love from your father. You deserved violin and Mandarin lessons. You deserved trips to Europe, status and recognition. But what did he do? Waste it all on those two feckless brats. Princess Kat and fancy pants congressman.

Mom, please.

I love you, baby, but you need to let me do this. You and your grandfather. You need to get on your knees.

Hayley’s not getting on her knees for you or anyone else.

Chivalrous. I haven’t seen that side of you in a long time.

Fine. Since you’re the one who swore to protect, honor and love me… you kneel. Let your wannabe bride see you as you really are on your wedding day. Kneel or so help me.

[guests clamoring]

[gunshot]

[screaming]

Anita: Oh, God, Danielle.

You get your hands off of me!

Give it up, Danielle.

[straining]

It’s over.

Jacob: Give it to me.

Better in your hands than my unhinged ex’s.

[gun clicks]

Dani, come on. Come on.

Excuse me, excuse me. Move, move, move.

[indistinct chatter]

You could’ve killed someone!

And you could have been a decent human being, but here we are.

You sure you’re okay, sweetheart?

I think so.

One last thing.

Oh…

it’ll never be over between us, Bill.

Don’t you think you owe us an apology for what you did today?

Shooting the flowers? No, it’s a vast improvement over those embarrassing funeral arrangements. I would question your taste level, but based on recent choices, it’s clear that you’ve lowered your standards to a hideous degree.

Oh.

I’ll see myself out.

Martin: Keep an eye on things while I do damage control. Thank God that photographer stopped shooting. And that your Aunt Dani was forced to follow his lead.

It’s no joke, Smitty. I’m a public figure. The last thing I need is bad press.

Talk about a shotgun wedding.

Not funny, Kat.

Coping mechanism, cuz.

They told me this wedding would be unforgettable. Now I know why. And to some child who befriended my daughter and broke bread like family.

I would be breaking something else– some bones or some laws– but don’t quote me.

Dani Dupree Hamilton deserves an award for enduring that nonsense. And speaking of, did I mention her sister Nicole snagged some honor or another? I don’t know.

Those Duprees get more awards and rewards than anybody. [laughs]

Ooh-wee, and don’t get me started on the nephew. Now, he’s God’s gift, or some might say. Andre something or another.

So, uh, d-d-do you have a name yet?

We wanted to wait and see.

No name, no gender. My husband said it would be fun to be surprised. And, look, he’s not even here. Oh! It hurts so bad. Something must be wrong.

How many birthing books have you read, hmm?

All of them.

Right, so it means you have a head full of what-ifs about things going sideways, but I need you to trust that things can also go right.

Okay, so what’s the, uh, what’s the next thing?

To breathe. What do you say? You ready to meet your kid?

Okay, ready? You’re gonna breathe with me, okay?

[all breathing deeply] That’s it, that’s it.

Ashley, it’s your dinner date at Uptown, where I’ve been hydrating for the last hour. Listen, if this is the ultimate payback for all those times I kept you waiting when I was putting out fires, I’m sorry. I get it and I owe you. I love you. See you soon.

Still giving up on her?

She’s not even answering my texts, so I’m gonna go check on her. We might see you later.

Hey, honey, um, what are you gonna do with the gun?

Look, I-I know it’s a lot to ask, but I was…

Jacob, a personal favor?

What do you need?

Police escort. Help speed my guests through the exits.

He doesn’t work for you, Dad.

Hey, it’s no problem.

Just meet me in the lobby, all right? We’ll just make sure everyone understands how stressful this has been for Danielle.

Find a way to make it all go away.

Yeah, like we do.

Vernon. I’ll make sure you get the invoice.

For what?

Damages.

Are you sure you didn’t get any pictures of what went on?

I saw the gun and forgot about the job. I’m really sorry.

These things happen.

If there are more papers for you to sign or additional payments…

They have my email.

Dodged that bullet. Oh, my God.

What’s wrong, Chels, screen broken?

I’m dead, Kat, I am so dead. Our family is literally going to murder me.

Why?

I was live streaming the whole time. My mom, the gun, everything.

No, that’s got to be a mistake.

And I made it. I basically broadcast this nightmare to the entire world.

Martin and Kat had every advantage. They had first-class tickets from the moment they were conceived. And what did you get? Not even the time of day. [scoffs] You know what? When we ran into your father at the hospital, do you remember what he did when he saw us? He looked straight through us. You saw.

I did.

The life you could’ve led, Eva. But we’re here now… and we are putting this plan into motion. But we can’t make any mistakes. Outside of these walls, you can never call me Mom. Who am I?

Leslie.

And you’re?

The daughter of a friend of yours who died when I was young. You took me in and raised me– you and Alan.

That covers our bases. Ted only knew me by my first name, Dana. So Leslie shouldn’t set off any alarms. And from now on, I can only be your surrogate mom. Well, until we drop the truth in the middle of their very privileged lives.

I got it. No hint of a blood connection between us as long as I’m incognito in their world.

Thanks, baby.

Mm-hmm.

You got to stop beating yourself up, honey.

I would feel better if we could locate Dani.

I should have known.

No one could have predicted this, honey.

I’m a psychiatrist, trained to pick up on signs of distress.

It’s up to all of us to fix this situation. We’re Duprees. We come together in times like these. Falling apart is not an option.

The first order of business– finding Danielle.

Vodka martini, very dry. [sighs]

The way you were driving over here, though.

I stayed under the speed limit.

Pamela, if you are here to criticize my behavior or tell me how ridiculous I looked…

I said that I would be here for you today, and I dropped the ball. I should have been a better friend. I should have stopped you before things got out of control. But I am here now. So put me in, Coach. Need me to run interference?

[phone buzzing]

Slash a tire, burn a bridge? I’m your ride-or-die.

Okay.

And if you need me to, uh, pretend that the bar isn’t vibrating from all the texts you’re getting, I can do that, too.

[buzzing stops]

What can I do, Dani?

You can pay for the drink I ordered.

Oh, you’re leaving so soon?

Time to face the Duprees.

Oh. Well, good luck.

Love you.

Love you back.

Enjoy the martini.

Toast the bride and groom.

[Pamela sighs]

[R&B music playing]

There goes my happy day.

Uh, no, no. Don’t let Dani ruin our plans.

She already has. Look around.

Well… then I say we do what we came here for.

With me looking like this? My dress, my hair is all…

You look radiant. After all you saw and heard tonight, can I still convince you to join me on this crazy ride?

Nothing would make me happier.

Yeah?

Let’s do it. Let’s, let’s get married.

[laughter]

Listen, before I go, don’t ask me what I heard about Dr. McBride, husband to the Vanessa McBride, Realtor to DMV’s best and brightest. You know her and Nicole Richardson are besties, right?

Oh, yeah, they go way back.

Anyway, you won’t believe what… [chuckles]

I’ll call you back.

You’re Ashley’s guy, right?

The fireman.

I never forget a face.

Derek Baldwin. Hey, uh, you know where I can find Ash? We were supposed to meet for dinner, and she never showed up.

Huh. Well, she clocked out a while ago, left with Andre Richardson.

Who?

He’s a photographer. Got on the elevator together, and that’s the last I saw.

Ashley: That’s great, now I need you to give me a push. Okay, ready? One, two. -That’s it. That’s it.

[groans]

That’s great, Alix, you are crushing this.

Andre: No one would believe this is your first baby. Thanks for letting me squeeze your hand. Hope it’s not your picture-taker.

It’s okay. I-I’ll get the feeling back eventually. But for now, just stay what you’re doing. Okay?

You’re doing good. Isn’t she, Ashley?

Alix, I can see the head.

Oh.

Andre: Oh, oh, look at that. Just a couple pushes away, and you’re holding your baby, okay?

Are you ready?

No. Yes. I don’t know, am I?

Definitely. Now, on this next contraction, I need you to dig deep and give me everything you got. All right, here we go. One, two.

[screaming]

[crying]

[door closes]

Expecting someone else?

Hoping you were your mother.

No one’s heard from her? I can make a call. Send out some patrol cars to be on the lookout.

That won’t be necessary, Detective Son-in-Law.

Dani, we were worried about you. Can we get you anything?

Naomi: How are you? Are you okay?

Anita: An entire house full of people worried sick about you, praying for the best, hoping you hadn’t gone and done something else reckless. And here you come waltzing in like it’s Sunday afternoon.

Mom. -“Mom”? Is this a child of mine before me? The shame you have brought on this family. And a gun? Since when do you have a gun? Is that who we are now? I don’t understand, Dani.

Martin: I do. Sometimes the anger just builds and boils over till you don’t have a choice.

No, you’re right. You’re right, Mother, as always. These were not some of my best moments, I will give you that. But after the hell that man has dragged me through…

You don’t stoop to other people’s level. You rise above! You’re supposed to know that.

I think what we all need right now is to take a deep breath and figure out what to do next.

I’ll have a word with Bill, see what it’ll take to make this disappear.

You see what your shenanigans are costing? Now your father has to go to that reprobate, hat in hand, and beg his forgiveness. You should be ashamed, Danielle.

I’m sorry you had to hear that, but you know how your mother gets.

I also know she would never shoot anyone. I should have done something.

She pulled a gun in public.

Please, it was a private affair. And, bottom line, no one was hurt and no one is filing charges.

Jacob, honey, maybe you should just go home.

Are you for real?

I’m just looking out for you. Please let the family sort this out.

Oh, so I’m not family?

No, that’s not… You are my husband and a cop.

Right, and what happened tonight was…

Justified as far as I’m concerned. My father and my backstabbing former friend got the wedding day they deserved.

Officiant: By the power vested in me and the state of Maryland, I pronounce you husband and wife.

I guess dreams really do come true.

And this is just the beginning.

[laughing]

Aw… [laughs]

Congratulations.

Thanks, man.

How does it feel being a married woman?

I’ve never been happier in my life.

Dani, moment for your favorite sister?

My only sister.

When you have one as good as me, who needs a spare?

What did I do, Nicole?

Oh, sweetheart.

Mom’s right. How could I? I am so ashamed. Listen to me. That wasn’t you. You were forced into the untenable position of having to show up to that man’s wedding to that little…

Miss Jezebel.

You’re only human.

But I was raised to be better. The child of Vernon and Anita Dupree. Dignified, calm under pressure. They can see your blood and sweat, if necessary, but never your tears. We’ll just have to find a way to forgive you for appearing human.

Mom will never.

She’ll get over it eventually.

I don’t know, Nicole. I tried so hard to do the right thing, to just show up– looking incredible, of course– make it through that infernal ceremony, and go home. But when the man who swore he would love me for the rest of my life was about to say it to a younger, maybe better version…

She is nothing like you. I should have seen this coming. After everything Bill has put you through, he’s changed you.

He destroyed me.

[laughs] Never. Dani Dupree is still as wild as a house afire, but heaven help us, I think Bill actually made you stronger.

Watch out.

What would I do without you?

Unpredictable little sister, I will never give you the chance to find out.

I don’t like the way you’re looking at me, cuz.

That cop you married seemed a little uncomfortable with what happened tonight.

He won’t say a word to anyone.

I’d feel a lot better if we’d gotten the gun back from him. Thank God no one called 911.

Naomi: How are you, Mom?

Better.

Okay. Mother, is there something you’d like to say to Dani? She didn’t get an apology from Bill and Hayley, and she won’t get one from me.

Epic. Everybody’s here.

Well, Chelsea has something she needs to share. Right, Chels?

Derek, I may have solved the mystery of the missing nurse. Seems like one of our elevators is stuck.

Wait a minute, and Ashley’s trapped inside?

Ashley?

Ashley: Thank God.

What the heck happened in here?

It’s a girl. A beautiful, perfect baby girl. I know it’s all in a day’s work for you, but stepping into that elevator changed my life.

Shame there’s not a photographer around to commemorate it.

Oh, uh, I’d be honored. Excuse me.

Okay.

I will never forget what you both did here tonight.

Mind if I get a picture of you holding her for her baby book?

Oh, I’ve got you covered.

Andre: Yeah. Of course.

Woman [over P.A.]: Dr. Lund, line three.

Oh, she’s the prettiest baby I’ve ever helped deliver.

Thank you… for everything.

Now, while you’re taking good care of her, don’t forget to take care of yourself.

True that.

Wow, a baby. You guys had quite a night.

Yeah. Your girl was amazing in there.

[laughs]

You’re a lucky guy.

Don’t I know it?

Mmm.

Derek: You stood me up.

For good reason, though.

[R&B music playing]

Mind if we join?

Oh, please.

So, that was fun.

Oh. Forgive his painful sense of humor. I know you and Dani are close.

Oh, as close as you and Nicole. And they’ll both need all the support they can get from us. The whole family will. Anything they need, we’ll be right there.

At least things can’t get any worse.

Martin: This is not good.

And there’s no way to delete that video?

It was a live stream, bro, and it’s going viral.

Viral? How viral?

Well, Chelsea has over a million followers, so that’s your baseline.

It was an accident, I swear.

And it is not your fault. It is mine.

No argument there.

What’s done is done.

We need to get out in front of this.

Where are you going?

Make some calls.

Any objections to a press conference, hmm?

We’ll give it our spin. And I need you all there showing a united front.

Of course, Daddy.

Oh, no, you’ve done quite enough.

Your mother’s right. Keep a low profile, sweetheart, it’s for your own good. Let us handle this.

Whatever you think is best.

Excuse me. We all know what’s at stake. Let’s show them who we are.

How you holding up, baby girl?

Being in this family is difficult at times. This is one of those times.

Dad, how messed up is this gonna be for Aunt Dani?

She’ll recover. The Duprees take care of their own.

Vernon and Anita would do anything for their children, just as I would do for my own. And I mean it. I’d brave through hell for our family.

LESLIE: Ted Richardson will curse the day he turned his back on us.

Landing that job with his wife was a clever way in, baby.

It was your idea.

And we got lucky when Nicole’s assistant had that accident.

I’m sorry Laura will be laid up for a while, though.

Everything will fall into place.

So, what was Nicole like at your interview?

[scoffs] Every bit as entitled as you said she’d be. No worries in Nicole’s carefully curated world. I can’t wait till we blow it all apart.

United front reporting for duty.

Let’s make our way back to the country club. Back to the scene of the crime.

It’s Granddaddy’s idea and it’s a damn good one. Shows we have nothing to hide. Best if we do it now, get in front of the situation.

I love this house.

Aah! Oh, my goodness! Caroline must have done all of this. That woman deserves a raise.

Well, if you need someone to blame, look no further.

You?

Mm-hmm, and you’re thinking, “Why would he go to all this trouble “when we’re leaving in the morning for our fabulous Italian honeymoon?” Well, I will tell you why. Because I am madly in love with the woman who brought me back to life.

[sighs] What did I do to deserve you?

[phone buzzes]

Oh, wait, wait. I really hope this is not about a flight delay. I don’t want to wait another minute to…

What is it?

[chuckles] A tip from my friend at The Washington Post. I have a press conference to attend.

THIS STILL NEEDS EXTENSIVE EDITING!

Leslie, that’s my surrogate mom, wanted to leave Chicago after her husband died. New beginnings and all that. Of course. Did you say surrogate? Uh, Leslie was best friends with my real mother. She died when I was little. I’m sorry. It was hard. But Leslie took me in and treated me like her own. She’s the only mom I’ve ever really known.

We’re just not blood related. Leslie sounds like a wonderful person. So as you know, since we moved here, Leslie and Mona have become friends. And so, here I am. Talking to you about a job. Can you work long hours? I know you have your own thing going. Mona said you were looking to set yourself up as a hairstylist.

Oh, I can book around your needs. I freelance, so I’m not tied to any schedule. And Leslie and I haven’t been in D. C. that long, so I don’t have any regular clients I have to service yet. I only ask because there is a lot going on right now. Mona and Laura were putting in extra hours. But don’t panic. It will eventually settle back into something more forgiving.

Speaking of Laura, I understand she was in a terrible accident. Is she okay? She will be. Unfortunately, it wasn’t an accident. Some nutcase deliberately ran her off the road. I didn’t realize. That’s awful. It’s been one thing after another. Tonight’s challenge is getting my sister through her ex husband’s wedding.

Not looking forward to that one. It is here, baby. We’re getting married. Tonight. Yeah. Followed closely by our honeymoon. I’m telling you, babe, you’re gonna love Italy as much as I do. Oh, me and Italy. I can’t even imagine. I’ve never been out of the country, and just to think the way that we’re going.

Flights, hotel, first class, everything. If this is a dream, I don’t want to wake up. And this is just the beginning, sweetheart. I intend to spend the rest of my life making you happier than you ever thought possible. And all those things you missed out on, I’m gonna give to you. And then some. You’re amazing, but I don’t need material things.

Only you. Nothing wrong with having it all. In fact, get used to it. I just wish I hadn’t cost you so much. Okay, do I seem like I’m mourning anything to you? My marriage to Dani would have ended eventually, even if you hadn’t come along. I mean, we grew apart. Us couples sometimes do. And both, both parties bless it and they move on.

So don’t worry, okay?

How long were you staring at me? Not long enough. Oh, I hope I didn’t ruin the illusion by drooling or snoring. Nah, you’re just as beautiful asleep as you are awake. Last night was, uh Wow. That’s an understatement. Man, I thought I was having the most fantastic dream. And then I woke up and there you were, right beside me.

Funny. I had the same dream.

But that’s what it has to be. A night, out of time, that never happened. I hope that’s not regret I’m hearing. We’re adults. We’re not related, we’re not married to other people. You get to have lovers if you choose. I know, Andre. It’s just, I’ve been Bill’s wife a long time. And I still feel married. Hey. Yeah.

Last night was amazing. You’re amazing. And no. Not one single regret. Because you have made me feel alive in a way that I haven’t in a while. But I’m raw, Andre. Much too raw to get involved more than what’s already happened. I think I’m really sorry to hear that.

That is an interesting piece. My elephant, I collect them. I like you, Eva. The job is yours if you want it, with the understanding, of course, that it is temporary, just until Laura can come back to work. Understood. I want the job very much. Thank you, Dr. Richardson. That is a mouthful. Call me Nicole. Nicole.

I’m only minutes away from becoming Mrs. Haley Hamilton. Don’t you just love the sound of that? It suits you. I’m so happy for you and Bill. You’ve made such a difference in his life. He’s completely changed mine. It’s not even recognizable anymore. I just wish that our happiness hadn’t caused his family so much pain.

We can do this however you want. If you want to pretend that we didn’t have mind bending sex last time, Okay. If you want to give it another go, I’m good with that too. I bet. You always this easy? Yeah, pretty much. I’m a no strains kind of guy. Besides, you’re in an emotionally complicated place right now.

So, I respect that. I accept it. Just remember though, if you ever get lonely, You got options. If I can find you wherever you are in the world. Who knows, I might take more jobs in the States. Stay closer to home. It’s been a lot better being back than I anticipated. And not just because of this unexpected bounty.

Well, you know what they say about good things. Are you kicking me out? Before a nosy Fairmont woman notices your car in my driveway? That might be good for Bill to know. But you spend the night? Yes. It sends the message that you’re moving on. But I’m not. Dani, he, he’s getting married tonight. That’s the plan.

More importantly, you’re too good for him. That’s what people keep telling me. Because it’s true.

You’re a good guy, Andre. Now go.

Yes, ma’am.

Do you think our co workers genuinely like me? As opposed to? Tolerating me because of Bill. Didn’t you feel the love at the celebration yesterday? I mean, yeah, but it’s easy to be warm and fuzzy at a party for your boss. You said you had it rough growing up. Yeah, I, um, was basically on my own. My father disappeared when my mother got pregnant, so I never knew him.

Which made her resent me. No siblings? Just me. Well, not anymore. To answer your question, yes. You found family at the law offices of Bill Hamilton. No one’s faking anything when it comes to you. You’re part of us now. Thank you. Hey, just checking in. I wanted to let you know I was thinking of you. I appreciate that, but I’ll be fine.

I know. You’ll be all stoic. A rock for your mom and Chelsea and not pay any attention to what you’re going through. Which is nothing compared to mom. Why do you have to quantify it? You were betrayed by Bill and Hayley too. You get to be in your feelings about this. Ugh, I just wish I hadn’t been so gullible.

Hayley seemed cool at first, you know? Smart and funny, despite the dismal way she grew up. I thought she was brave. And then I was the one that invited her into my family, and now that lying little bitch stole my father and broke my mother’s heart. I’ll carry guilt about that for the rest of my life. You know, there’s another way to look at it.

I’m listening. You and your mom and sister definitely have fallout to work through, but in the end, maybe this turned out for the best. How? Your father has shown his true colors where Dani is concerned, made his indifference unmistakable. Would you really want your mother married to a man who thinks so little of her?

Hey, hey. What, what’s this now? We need to talk. I need to talk and you need to listen. Okay. I suppose I owe you that. You probably think I am here to berate and accuse you again. I’m not. Oh, nice change, but it begs the question, why are you here? On my wedding day, no less. It doesn’t have to be. Cancel. It’s not too late, Bill.

Stop this ridiculous wedding to that ridiculous girl and come back home where you belong. You mean that? Yes. I’m not expecting a miracle. It’ll be rough. Great pain requires great healing, but we can do it. If we’re patient, and kind, and if we recommit to the family and the life that we made, we can come back even stronger.

You really believe that can happen? After everything we’ve been through? I know it. But not if you’re in some farce of a marriage with Haley, trying to reclaim your lost youth or whatever the hell you’re doing. I am your wife! We belong together. We loved each other, Bill. Deeply. I didn’t imagine that. You were my everything.

Once. And I can be again. We share too much to just throw it away. History. Family. I’m not gonna lose that. Not to Hayley. Not to anyone. Just say yes. Say yes to giving us another chance and I will take it from there. You don’t have to be the fixer this time. I’ll do the work. Just please, please stop this nonsense and come back home.

Dani.

Beautiful. Exquisite, Dani.

I think I’m going to start charging you photographer’s assistant fees. That’s my girl. Always looking for the bottom line. Time is money. I haven’t hired you yet. You are strictly volunteer status. But I can’t swing for dinner. No, I’m dancing and you got a deal. Damn.

So, he asked casually, Does anyone know about Ashley Morgan? And that firefighter boyfriend? I don’t know Ashley well enough to be in her business. Ask Naomi, they’re BFFs. But be careful if you don’t want your, what is it, interests to be known. Naomi’s also close with a boyfriend. They have like a couples club.

Ashley, Derek, Naomi, and Jacob. They hang out at the Uptown. Uptown. So, you’re looking at Ashley. You sound surprised. I am. Don’t get me wrong, Ashley’s lovely. Yeah. But she’s not your usual sophisticated woman of the world type. Well that’s the advantage of having a big heart. Room for all different types.

That’s sort of the point. We love you dearly, Andre. But your attention span when it comes to women leaves a lot to be desired. Ashley is not a casual person. I hope you’ll remember that. Yep. You got it. I got it. Okay, nephew. Friendly warning. If you’re planning to ask, leave early. I wouldn’t, you haven’t been here long enough to not be here.

Why would I wanna leave early? Here’s to the third floor. You’re connected to the Hamilton’s right? Thought you might be invited to that fancy wedding at the Country club. Believe me, my friendship with Naomi does not gimme invite to Bill or Dani events, and this wedding is toxic. I’m happy not to be anywhere near it.

So what’s your take? Being friends with one of the daughters and all. Is Hayley Lawson a seductress or is Bill Hamilton a cheater? Can’t both be true. Anyway, it doesn’t matter now. The damage has been done. I remember the first time I saw you. I was hanging out with Wayne Maddox. Yes. Yeah, he was at the top of his game back then.

Had the world at his feet and man, that guy could throw a football. Yeah. A party too. And that’s where we met. In one of Wayne’s bashes. I remember like it was yesterday. Yeah. You walked in that room and everyone else in there became less. I’ve never seen anything more beautiful and the way you carry yourself with such confidence and pride knocked me out.

That’s what makes this moment so sad. Sad? Hey, no, no, no, this is good. We’re remembering, validating our history. This is what I’m talking about, desperation, pains me to see it. What happened to all that pride?

I can’t believe you would fix your mouth to say something so hurtful. But here’s the answer. Whatever I am in this moment, that pains you. You made me. Oh, no, no, I’m not taking that on. No, you’re a grown woman, with free will, responsible for the choices that you make. And, you’re a Dupree, as your family loves to remind everyone at the drop of a hat.

A superior being who should be able to handle herself with more dignity and restraint, instead of physically assaulting people and refusing to let go of what’s no longer hers. Here’s the reality, Dani. Haley is going to be my wife. And it can’t happen soon enough. And, if you really want to honor all of that history that we made, show some grace.

Be the bigger person, and forgive Hayley. Stop talking. I have finally heard enough.

So, for the purposes of this video, do I call you Nicole and Ted, or Mom and Dad? Whatever comes out is fine, I’m sure. Okay then, Mom. Alright, let’s get it. You’re well known for your work as a psychiatrist and philanthropist. When it comes to your personal life, though, not much is out there. We can start with your father.

For those of you who don’t know, this is my brilliant plastic surgeon husband, Dr. Ted Richardson. Hello, everyone. I’m honored to be involved in this tribute to my remarkable wife. Let’s go to the beginning. Where did you two meet? Ted and I went to an NMA conference, it was on Maui that year, when we were in med school.

That night we went to the welcome reception, and we were introduced by someone, you remember? I don’t. This is gonna sound corny, but the moment our eyes met, and you smiled at me, time stood still. Just long enough to let me know that I had just met my future. We exchanged a few words, and then the speeches started.

Never ending. After a bit, I went for a walk on the beach. I waited a respectable amount of time and then I caught up with her. And then I gave fate a little nudge. We walked for a bit. When we got back on hotel grounds, we commandeered a cabana and talked until the sun came up. A sign. We like to think so.

That night definitely sealed the deal for me. Same. No other woman has pierced my radar since. I have been very fortunate in life. Had many blessings come my way, but the one that I’m the most grateful for, the one that changed everything, was deciding to attend the NMA conference on Maui, where I met the one and only love of my life.

Here. All done. You look gorgeous. Wow! Who needs professionals? Do I know what I’m doing or what? Yeah, thank you so much, Caroline. Just for being here. And being my friend. It’s not a chore. You’re terrific. I know it. Bill knows it. And you wait and see. Everyone else in Fairmont Crest will know it too. Dani B.

Dabbed.

Ridiculous. Horrible man. The depth of betrayal is staggering. And in your own home? We don’t have to put too fine a point on that. We’re all just outraged on Dani’s behalf. You showing up here, despite everything Bill and Hayley did to you, is the bravest. Most selfless thing I’ve ever seen. It’s the girls.

You know. Bill didn’t divorce them. Naomi and Chelsea need a relationship with their father. And I wasn’t about to send them here by themselves. Thank you all, by the way. Your support during this ghastly time is much needed and appreciated. Any one of us could have been your shoes, Dana. The least we could do is be here for you.

Well, the good news is no need to go to the reception and hopefully the ceremony will be brief. We’re here, Dani. You are not alone. Thank you. Well, I wasn’t sure my request would be honored. Wow. There you have it. It’s a little backhanded, though. All those ladies dressed in black like they’re at a funeral.

In a way they are. We all are. Because tonight we bury your influence over my family. It’s done, Bill. This is the last favor you will ever get from a Dupree.

I wouldn’t be the maid of honor you deserve if I didn’t make sure certain traditions were upheld. Bill gave you something new and blue. I covered the other two.

That’s old. My mother used it to wrap her bouquet when she married my dad. I thought you could do the same. I love that. And that’s borrowed. From me.

The diamonds aren’t real, but you can’t beat the sparkle.

Oh no. Don’t you dare cry. And mess up my brilliant makeup application. Come on. Let’s get you into this amazing dress. Okay. I wasn’t sure you would come tonight. I thought you might hop that flight to Paris. Never let it be said that I am not a good Dupree soldier. I’m so sorry, baby girl. I know this is costing you a lot to be here.

Your mother and I really appreciate your sacrifice. Trust me, this wasn’t asked of you lightly. I get it. And really, it’s fine. Things work out the way they’re supposed to. If I ended up here tonight of all nights, it’s for a reason.

What do you make of that? I don’t know. But what she said wasn’t what she meant.

I’m sorry, but you look familiar, do I? I know. Wait, is that my husband? I know. My, my schedule’s been crazy. A run on heart surgeries? It happens. Everything all at once. When things calm down, I’ll make it up to you. Maybe a trip to the Bahamas? Ooh, beach boys and cabanas. I’m so there.

I didn’t think you would make it. I cut my trip short. You’re my best friend. There’s no way I’d let you face this night without being here in full support. How are you holding up? As well as can be expected. Well, it’s homestretch time. We are going to get you through this odious night, and then we are moving on.

But first, let’s get a drink. Hey, babe. Figured you could use this. You are a lovely, intuitive husband. Thank you. So how you feeling? Sad. I’m sad that our family’s come to this. Divided. Angry. Estranged. All because two narcissists recognized themselves in each other and fell in love with their own reflections.

While the rest of us sort through the wreckage.

Kat, right? Do I know you? Tomas Navarro. I’m an attorney at Jungle Bill’s law firm. Oh, sorry to hear that. Tense time for your family. Putting it mildly. I’m actually surprised you guys are here. Don’t ask. Okay. I just hope you won’t hold the workplace situation against me. I’d like to take you out some night.

Gels! You know, you can still go to Paris once this dreadful night is over. Cleanse the palate. Unfortunately, the time for Paris has come and gone. Oh well. Can’t say I didn’t try. I can’t talk right now, but I appreciate the check in. It’s nice to be wanted again. Who are you talking to? An old acquaintance.

Which tells me nothing. Should I be jealous? Nope. Nothing’s changed. I’m all yours.

I owe you an apology. You think? I was ungracious earlier. You were cruel and heartless. I know. I’m sorry. Hey, I just get sick of defending myself. Look, Dani, I’m tired of all the confrontations that lead nowhere. You must be too. Why don’t we just find some happy medium where we can coexist? I mean, you being here tonight is a start.

And Hayley and I, we really appreciate the gesture. Oh, don’t come at me with that. Like you didn’t have something to do with it. What do you think you know? My parents insisted we come to this clown show because you got to them somehow. That’s why I’m here. I don’t wish you or your whore well. In fact, I hope my forced presence is a dark cloud that has a negative impact on the rest of your miserable lives.

Okay. Oh! Okay.

Got it. Perfection. Except a sudden wave of panic. If you’re having second thoughts, now would be the time. No, no. Not about marrying Bill. I’ve never been more sure of anything. But, seriously. The room is empty and I’m not even talking about myself here. Bill is a famous, highly respected defense attorney. I want to reflect well on him and how pathetic would it be if his only guests were on payroll?

Want me to take a peek?

You know what? No. Let the haters hate. No one is going to spoil this day. Now we’re talking. You ready? So ready. Hey. It means a lot to me. Having my daughters here. I know it’s under duress. Dani told me your presence was mandated, but still. Seeing your beautiful faces on one of the most meaningful nights of my life is an unexpected blessing and I’m grateful for it.

I suppose you hate me too. No, but I don’t like you very much.

Hanging in? Barely. I did something so monumentally stupid today that I probably deserve all the humiliation I got. Oh dear, am I afraid to ask? I will spare you the gory details, but I went to Bill’s hotel suite. I bared my soul. I begged him to come home, and he shut me down in the cruelest way possible.

He doesn’t love you anymore, Dani. How many ways does he have to show you? Let me ask you a question, and please, give it serious consideration. Is your obsessive behavior about loving Bill? Or the fear of having to build a life without him, or of being alone. I don’t have to stand here and let you psychoanalyze me.

It’s not that deep. I’m pissed as hell. I forgot for a minute, but it won’t happen again. What I am about is making that bastard pay some kind of price. Bill doesn’t get to put a blowtorch to my life and then sail off on a honeymoon with his new child bride. Not after everything I’ve done. After everything I gave up?

So, no. I’m not letting go. Not until Bill suffers. Martin. Didn’t mean to give you a call. Why’s that? Well, I’d like to think that you and I can still maintain a mutually beneficial relationship, despite what happened between Dani and me. I’ve always seen your potential. You haven’t even begun to tap into your power, and I’d like to have a hand in helping you realize that.

To our mutual benefit. Meaning what exactly? Nothing all that different between me and your family and how things have always worked. Favors rendered when needed. Discretion always. I’m pretty sure those days are over. No, never say never. Wounds heal, given time. Once the new normal settles, I’m sure your family will remember the value I bring to handling certain situations that are delicate.

No need for that to change. Especially between the two of us. And why am I being singled out? Oh, I’m sorry. Am I coming on too strong? Don’t want to be accused of overkill. My point is, your family, and you can tell them I said this, might want to carefully consider whether permanently freezing me out is the smartest thing to do.

Thanks for coming. Appreciate you.

It’ll be over soon, Mom. Yeah, how are you holding up? I’m okay. Feeling the support from everyone really helps. Makes me unhinged ex. Well, at least you look fabulous. Like the most gorgeous grieving widow ever. Yeah, and the black hanky’s a nice touch. This whole situation is so surreal. Waiting to watch my husband marry someone else?

What the hell? Okay, we’ll get through it. Girls, listen. And remember what I say. No matter what happens Never doubt or forget that I love you something fierce. We love you too, mom. Yeah, we got your back, always. Okay. Let’s get this done. You girls go on in, I’m just gonna freshen up. Okay.

We are gathered here today to join Bill and Haley in holy matrimony. Andre, what are you doing here so late? Uh, just dropping off some proofs for Nicole. How’s it going around here? I’m starting to get how the hospital works. You can’t predict what will happen with patients, but it is so much easier to make quick adjustments when you know the basics.

Like where to find the meds.

Are you leaving? Yeah, but I can see you safely to your car. Make sure the parking garage boogeyman doesn’t get you. Ha ha. Hi. Hi. Uh, what floor? Uh, parking level two. And don’t worry, I’ll protect you too. Ha ha. It’s a private joke. It’s cool. Ha ha. Oh my god, I’ve been calling out of my skin. I thought you would have called me by now.

Sorry, I was at the library doing some research. How was the interview with Nicole? I didn’t want to disappoint you. You’re kidding, right? Really? Man, I was so sure that my plan would work. And I didn’t. Disappoint, I mean. Mom, make that Leslie. Your plan was genius. Frankly, I was surprised how easy it was.

Nicole honestly doesn’t expect her world to go off script. That’s how privileged she is. She has no clue who we are or that we even exist on the planet. So you got the job. You are looking at Nicole Richardson’s brand new temporary assistant . Yes. Okay. I’m so excited. This is it, honey. The day I, I’ve dreamed about

You are finally going to be where you should have been all along in your father’s house. Mm. So I’m going to stop by Uptown after this. Grab something to eat. By chance, would you like to join me? Are you okay? I’m not sure. Something seems to be happening. I’m not okay. This baby’s coming. Like now. On behalf of Bill and Hayley, I would like to welcome and thank you all for coming out tonight in celebration of their union.

Your love and support means the world. Marriage is a lifelong partnership, a promise of love, respect, honor, and trust in each other through the good and the bad. It is a covenant not to be taken in too lightly. Today, among these witnesses, Bill and Haley embark on a journey to husband and wife. If anyone here objects to the union of these two people, speak now or forever hold your peace.

Me, I object. Dani, no! No, no, no! Dani!

THIS STILL NEEDS EXTENSIVE EDITING!

Okay, Chels, here we go. So here I am getting ready for an Ebony fashion shoot. I know how much you guys love BTS glimpses. So Kat and I will be popping on and off to preview a few looks. Okay, back later.

I’m still in disbelief. Did last night actually happen? The Grants ordering us to dad and Haley’s wedding? Please tell me that I imagined it. It feels so bad for Aunt Dani. She just keeps getting blindsided. You worried about her? I’m worried about me. When Naomi and I left her last night, she was okay, relatively speaking, but she’s been in that house all by herself all night.

Probably couldn’t even sleep. Everything’s just eating away at her. She’s gonna come in here totally trippin and take it all out on me. You watch. Nothing that I do will be right.

I was shocked. I tell you, shocked. First, because I’m pretty sure the legendary Anita Dupree has never once called me. But when I realized why she reached out, I almost fell out of my chair. Did I hear right? Your parents are asking the community to show up at Bill and Hayley’s wedding at your request? How does that even happen?

Dani’s putting the girls first. Naomi and Chelsea are Bill’s daughters. Naturally, he wants them at his wedding. Dani didn’t want them to be there alone, considering all the complications, so she decided to go with. Wow, Dani, I’m impressed. We do what we must. The good news is Fairmont Crest is happy to turn out for the cause, especially the women.

Dani will have all the support she can stand. I am so proud of you, sissy. Mm, mm, mm, mm. Incoming.

Sorry to interrupt. Easy fix. Keep it moving. I was hoping we could talk. Just for a minute.

Why not?

Ashley! How’s it going with the new job? Busy. I can’t talk. Dr. Richardson wants me in a patient room. Okay, just confirming tonight. Yeah, looking forward. Same. Okay, bye.

When you weren’t at your office, I figured I’d find you here. Place you come to hear yourself think.

What do you want? A little respect for my daughter to start. Or was that asking too much? You don’t deserve my respect. If you ever did. Now, for me to hear you say that, that really saddens me. It does. You used to think your dad hung the moon. The way my little girl loved me, that was the best feeling I ever had.

Right until Hailey came along.

You tell me what has to happen for us to coexist. I’m willing to do whatever it takes. You can’t possibly expect me to believe you give a damn about me or my feelings. I do care, Dani. I’d like nothing better than for you to find forgiveness in your heart for me. Now, I realize that can’t happen overnight, and I’m good with however long it takes.

But in the meantime, we’re here, behind these gates. If we could just find a way to be Not Prince, but Sybil. It is not my job to make things pleasant or easy for you, Hayley. In fact, I intend to actively look for ways to make you want to move as far away from Fairmont Crest as possible. Anything else? No.

Good. See you around the neighborhood.

Dani handled that well, right? Haley’s still standing. I know, my sister. Something tells me this is the calm before a really bad storm.

Laura, oh my god. I was so worried about you. Worried? What’s going on? It’s Laura. She hasn’t come in yet and I can’t get a hold of her. Well, I’m sure it’s nothing to be concerned about. I mean, she and the boyfriend are relatively new, right? So they’re probably just having a little morning delight. No, Laura is responsible.

If she was going to be late, she would have called. I’m afraid something awful has happened. Life’s been lifing so much lately. You and I haven’t connected for a while. Oh, I know. I’ve been meaning to reach out. Hubby and I keep missing each other. Our schedules don’t seem to be sinking lately. Too busy, people.

It happens. Diego, I’ve been meaning to talk to you about arranging a workout series. Absolutely. Just let me know a good day and time for you. Great. I’ll contact you in the next day or so. Looking forward to it.

Right? That guy is fine. Makes me want to sign up for a series of my own. You’re grown. Gone and married and you’ve never been naive. You know how relationships evolve. People fall in love, they fall out. Situations that once worked, they become untenable. Untenable? Yeah. You know what’s untenable? You sleeping with your daughter’s best friend.

When you did that, you not only betrayed mom, you betrayed me. So no, I don’t forgive you. Okay, look, I realize I’m far from perfect, okay? And I haven’t always been thoughtful or kind, but my shortcomings as a man and a husband have nothing to do with the way I love my daughters. Nothing. I want to make things right with you and your sister.

That’s why I came looking for you. To at least make a start at getting us back on track. Well then you made this trip for nothing. Look, I’m not interested in your justifications for what’s inexcusable. As a matter of fact, I’m not interested in anything you have to say. As far as I’m concerned, my father is dead.

I got your text. What’s this about Laura? As you can see, she’s still not here. You know her. Laura is never late, certainly without giving me a heads up. She’s not answering her phone? Straight to voicemail. That is concerning. Oh, that’s Ted. Hey. I’m at the hospital with Lauren. She’s been hurt.

Yes, girl! Oh my god, you look amazing. You are killing it right now.

I’m not loving the hair. I do. In fact, I posted about how dope it is. It needs adjusting.

Better.

You must have been something to see when you were queen of the runway. Huh? I mean, those photos tell some of the tale. But in the flesh, walking that wall, slinging the hair? Oh, be still my heart. Honey, I wasn’t just a star, I was a meteor. With years to go, I could have been bigger than Naomi Campbell and Beverly Johnson put together.

Then Bill Hamilton walked into my life. May he burn forever in the hottest corner of hell.

If your intentions were to hurt me with those words, you succeeded. Listen, I’m just telling you how things are. You don’t deserve my forgiveness. Not after the casual way you blew up what was left of this family. And for what? A conniving little slut who couldn’t keep her legs closed? And instead of belatedly showing some consideration and class, letting wounds and hearts heal, you’re planting Haley on mom’s doorstep.

What kind of sorry excuse does that to the woman he promised to love? You had a whole life with mom, and you just toss her aside because someone younger came along? You are the oldest, most disgusting cliche in the book. Okay, look, I know everybody hates hearing it, but I’m gonna say it as often as it takes to sink in.

I love Haley. Okay? And I’m sorry my family was hurt, but what, you’d rather I stay with your mother in a loveless situation? Isn’t that more disgusting? Oh my God, you don’t get it, do you? It’s not about ending the marriage. It’s about you flaunting Haley in mom’s face. Getting married at the country club, dad.

Living in Fairmont Crest. It’s deliberate cruelty, and I wanted you to be better than that, but oh well. Look, Haley has her heart set on the country club, alright? She hasn’t had a lot in life and I want to make up for that. And frankly, I don’t see any reason we shouldn’t make a home in a community that I lived in for decades.

Yes, emotions are raw right now. Yeah. But after enough time has gone by, everyone will adjust. Because that’s what you decided. The great and powerful Bill Hamilton.

I can’t believe I ever looked up to you. Or wanted to be like you. You are despicable. You’re cold and arrogant and selfish. And you have the nerve to come here bleeding about respect. Where was your respect for your family where you were unzipping your pants for Haley? Hey, hey, don’t you talk to me that way.

You like it or not. I am very much alive, and I’m still your father. I’ll talk to you however I please. I didn’t seek you out. If you don’t like your reception, you can turn around and walk away.

Okay, MRI looks clean. And then there’s this. Good. Make those notes. Yep. You got it. Alright, thank you. Yep. Thanks. Laura. Going to be just fine. Okay.

I don’t have time for this. Nicole needs me and I’m planning a trip to Mau. Unfortunately, you won’t be traveling soon. It’s a bummer, but Maui will be there. Your recovery has to come first. Laura, is she alright? Displaced fracture. We’ll get her over to my clinic, free of charge, of course. I’ll call the North, though, to do the surgery.

Then, she can recover there. Listen, I’m incredibly grateful for you guys. But I can’t be out of commission right now. You said six to eight weeks? That’s impossible. It looks like you don’t have a choice. What in the world happened? I was driving home, and out of nowhere there was a motorcycle behind me with the tide beams on.

I couldn’t see, and I tried to gain some distance, but it stayed on top of me. Finally, I lost control, and I crashed.

It sounds like someone deliberately tried to hurt you. Sounds like attempted murder. That doesn’t make any sense. Who would try to kill me? I don’t, I don’t have any enemies or anything that anybody would want that badly. I’ll call Naomi’s husband. Jacob’s robbery homicide now. Maybe he’ll find out who did this.

Hey, have you heard from Laura? She’s in the hospital. Oh my god. Some lunatic ran her off the road and didn’t even stop. Oh, that’s awful. Laura could have been killed. Oh, I mean, she’s gonna be okay, right? Yes, but there’s surgery and a long recovery ahead of her. She’ll be out of commission for weeks. Aw, poor kid.

Well, not to minimize it, but like you said, it could be worse. I just don’t understand who would want to hurt that sweet girl. Oh, well. Times like these, people are seriously nuts.

You’re late. Bill’s been yelling for his number one paralegal. Well, I wasn’t scheduled for a meeting or anything. He must have forgotten. Possible. We thought that was going on. Um, Bill’s office? Yes. Okay. Congratulations! Gotcha! What is all this? A celebration of love. Yours and Bill’s for each other. And ours for the two of you.

Surprise, baby. Thank you, baby. You’re welcome. Oh my god, Oh my god. For me? Yes. It’s good. Chelsea, can you spare some energy? Is that too much to ask? Chelsea’s fine. You don’t need energy for test shots. Uh, I’m just checking the lighting. Thank you. This isn’t my first shoot, Mom. I know when to dial it up. Give me some movement.

Shoes have gotta go. Why? I want to see a longer leg. Kat, grab the higher heel, will you? Actually, I like the ones I’m wearing. They’re great with the outfit and they’re comfortable. You can be comfortable at home. Change shoes, please.

I knew she would be like this. Making me feel like I’m three. Like my opinion matters less than zero. You see why I hate this stupid job? It erases me. The woman that I am. Love you. Love you more. How is Dave? Your boyfriend? Yeah. He’s on his way now. He just found out I’m here. Good. You probably could really use him right now.

Such a thing to have gone through. I can’t imagine how terrified you must have been. I’m still shaking.

I just thought for sure I was dead. It’s okay, let it out.

It’s okay. That bike literally came out of nowhere. It just happened so fast. I was blinded. All of the arrangements are made. Check into the clinic anytime. This is just so above and beyond. I don’t, I don’t know how to say thank you. You just did. You are extended family, Laura. We are happy to help you. I just, I still can’t believe it.

I am so sorry, Nicole. There is absolutely nothing that you need to apologize for. It is not your fault some maniac tried to run you off the road. You were just saying how busy you and Laura have been with Nicole’s various projects. What are you going to do without her? I have to hire someone from the temp agency.

As a matter of fact, I need to get on that ASAP. Oh, okay. Well, hey, let me know if there’s anything I can do. Thanks, Liz. Absolutely. Mona, wait. I had a thought. What about Eva? What about her? Well, I know you’re not aware, but Eva has mad computer skills, and she’s very quick, organized, and she can even do hair, if needed.

Just let me know if, uh, you’d like her to step in for Laura. I mean, if that’s something you would consider. Are you kidding? Eva would be a godsend. She’s professional, personable, and I know Nicole would like her. Eva would really love that. It would be so good for her. I mean, she’s been at a crossroads in her career path.

lately and being exposed to Nicole and all the things she does will definitely give her some clarity. That sounds like a solution all the way around. If Eva has any assistance skills, or if she’s at least willing to develop them, that could make my life a whole lot easier. Tell her to call me. We’ll set up an interview.

I would be happy to do that.

I have a suggestion. Uh huh. Now if this offends you, feel free to put me in my place and forget I ever brought it up. Okay. I think you should sit this one out. The shoot? Yes. I am Chelsea’s manager. It is my job to supervise and guide her. I get that, but actually what you’re doing is soaking all the fun out of the process.

I guess I see your point. Yeah. Well, what am I supposed to do? Enjoy it.

I need attention, turn your head my way I’m gonna rack it up on the runway I’ll entertain you Sunday to Sunday Get them all watching like Hey, whoa Yeah, yeah, watch me

Was fantastic. You killed that, Chelsea. Thanks. And thank you, Andre. I actually had fun. Me too. It was awesome watching you work. You got something special. Like your mother. You did great, Chell. Thanks, Mom. Aren’t you the man of the hour? Turning a budding disaster into a good time had by all. What can I say?

It’s a gift. No, seriously, I’m just here to help however I can. Well, if you mean that, I could seriously use a distraction. Why don’t you hang around after the girls leave, have a drink with me. Let me think about that. That can definitely happen.

The fashion shoot was a big hit. 20, 000 comments and over 50k likes so far. Ooh, that should translate to some nice sales. All in all, this was a better day than I expected. Thank God for Andre. Right? I cannot wait to see those shoots. They’ll be amazing. Andre was phenomenal and you, you were truly awesome.

Ebony Magazine will be thrilled. To a job well done, cousin. Thank you.

That’s good. You’re wearing the necklace we got you. I love it. Thanks again, you guys. It looks nice. I knew it would. This is good. Being here together, it feels familiar and normal in a week that has been anything but. How are you hanging? You ready for tomorrow? As I’ll ever be. I saw him today. Bill? He tracked me down in the park, wanting to mend fences, demanding respect.

I told him my father’s dead to me, so Ouch. Bill Hamilton expects everyone to just dust themselves off and get on with accepting Hayley and him are together like it’s no big deal. Well, I’m not doing that. I’m going to hold Bill Hamilton accountable for the pain he caused with my very last breath. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you what a lucky man you are.

Oh, no kidding. Haley’s one hell of a catch. Yeah, you never lie. Of course, Dani was no slouch either. Especially back when you met her, back in the modeling days. Ha! Man, there’s nothing wrong with going new and improved. Keeps the old juices flowing. Look, if that’s your politically incorrect way of saying you’re happy for me, I’ll take it.

Can I have everyone’s attention, please? I’m not ordinarily the one to make speeches, but I have something I want to say. Do not annoy your mommy. You can do or say whatever you want. This man, this man has changed my life. No, better than that. Bill has given me a life. One that I never dreamed possible. Full of love and laughter.

Work that I’m proud of and the people in this room who have become my friends. I now have abundance. And it’s all because of you, Bill. This journey hasn’t been smooth. People who didn’t deserve it were hurt and I am genuinely sorry about that. But what I will never be sorry for is what I found with you.

Or the future that we’re walking into. Together. I love you now, beyond reason. And I can’t wait to be your wife! Cheers! Cheers! Cheers! There we go! Yes! I can’t get over how amazing you were with Chelsea. She can be a real sourpuss. You lit her up. Yeah, um. I got the advantage of working at a distance. Makes it easy.

Well, she actually enjoyed herself. And so did I. Thank you. We both needed that. It’s been a rough road, huh? Just when I think it can’t get any worse, it does. Seems I will be going to the wedding tomorrow night. Okay, now that I’m surprised by. Surprise me too. That’s what my parents want. You haven’t been summoned?

No. I am related through my uncle’s side of the family. So not a Dupree by blood or by extension. Lucky you. A man can’t hope. Andre Richardson. Are you coming on to me? Could be. Is it working?

I think I’m gonna go. It’s been a long day. Coming? I think I’m gonna stay for a while. Me leaving you? That’s different. Gotta shake things up every now and then. Sure, I can stay a little longer. I’m good. Go. Love you. Love you. Are you alone? Not anymore. Did you hear from Dr. Richardson today? About Laura? Mm hmm.

Yeah, I did. Aunt Nicole’s assistant, Laura? What? What happened? Motorcycle versus vehicle. Hit and run. Are you serious? Can you believe it? Some crazy person ran Laura off the road. Dr. Richardson brought me onto her case. Is she alright? Need surgery. For a leg fracture. Oh, I’m so sorry to hear that. Listen, if you find the perp, let me know.

I’d be happy to represent Laura in a civil action. At least get her compensated, you know? Can we go back a little? You’re being assigned to patients already? I don’t know if I was assigned as much as I was the first nurse Dr. Richardson saw when he walked off the elevator. Or, come with me, Ethan. I want you on this.

But still I loved being used, and I think I made Laura feel a little better. Okay, so your first few days have gone well? They’ve been eye opening, in a horrifying kind of way. Um, please explain. Yes. I’m a good student. I aced all my tests, but this isn’t school or hypotheticals. This is real patients with real illnesses and injuries like Lara.

What I do, how quickly I react, can literally mean the difference between life and death. It’s sobering. Being a firefighter is like that. But you are naturally fearless. Me, I’m suddenly petrified. I’m starting to wonder if I Made a mistake. I mean, maybe nursing isn’t the profession for me after all. No.

You’ve had this calling since you were a kid. You answered it, and now you’re there because you’re supposed to be. Of course it’s scary. Big things are. But you need to trust your gut and don’t overthink. That’ll just freeze you up. You already have all the information that you need. You just have to apply it.

Girl, listen to your man. He speaks nothing but truth. Derek can always talk me off the ceiling. I love you, babe. I love you, too. Wait, you said you had news? Yes. So I finally got assigned a permanent partner. Oh, good. Well, at least until he retires next year, but I’ll take whatever time with him I can get.

Marcel Malone is the most brilliant homicide detective ever. I mean, he’s forgotten things that most of us will never even learn. And I’m sure your police chief father had nothing to do with putting you together. Well, if he did, I’m grateful for it. Now, Malone, he’s an arrogant jerk, but you can’t put a price on his knowledge and experience, you know?

Guys, excuse me, excuse me, everybody, everybody, uh, look. Haley and I want to thank you all for honoring us with all your good wishes. They have been scarce lately, so this celebration meant a lot to both of us. You guys are the best. Like, I was starting to feel like people weren’t happy for us. Seriously consider eloping to Vegas at once.

Wait, and cheat me out of a night at the Fairmont Crest Country Club? Girl, you better think again. Well, Bill talked me out of it, and I’m so glad he did. We may not have the full house that I dreamed up for my wedding, but our guests will genuinely wish us well. And that’s the way to start a marriage. And on that note, guys, this party is over.

We gotta get our beauty sleep for the big day tomorrow. Oh my God. It just hit me. We’re getting married tomorrow! Congratulations! guys so much. This shot is incredible. I had the opportunity to work with some amazing photographers. I’m talking about you. How you leap right off of the frame. So vibrant, so alive.

You know what I love most? The power I felt when I was on the runway or in front of a camera. It was like nothing I’d ever felt before. Certainly not since. And I wasn’t done. I just, uh, I just walked away. Bill Hamilton is a fool. Look at you. Then. Now. You’re magnificent. Lioness. And dare I say, one of the sexiest women I’ve ever laid eyes on.

That’s high praise from Caesar. Dance with me. Here? Now? Right now.

Oh! Watch your feet.

Got moves. Got moves. Love my little fingertips. On the other hand, I’m going to go in and land it.

How did I What happened? You fell asleep in the middle of Jacob’s down. Aww. Been out ever since. Seriously? I talked everyone’s ear off about my stupid insecurities and then when someone else tried to get a word in, I crashed? You were adorable. Ugh. And obviously exhausted, so I’m gonna go. I thought you’d get some sleep.

Not so fast, mister.

Strangely enough, I’m getting a second wind.

Oh my god, stop. So what can I do to make you feel better about tomorrow? Just, just stay close. Damn, woman, you drive a hard bargain. Stop. Ugh, I’m just glad it’ll be over soon. I will never have to think about Bill Hamilton and Hayley Lawson ever again. You know your father’s not gonna let you go that easily.

He doesn’t get to say. He made his choice and that was Hayley. Don’t have to live with the consequences. But you know I’m here for you, babe.

I can’t wait for our wedding night. It’s going to be so special. Yeah? Mm hmm. Do tell. Got a little something planned. Guaranteed to blow your mind. Oh. Mm hmm. Well, I happen to be available right now. Down boy. When we leave here, that’ll be the last you see of me until I’m walking down the aisle. Since when did you become a traditionalist?

Well, I only plan on getting married once, so I don’t want to tempt fate by ignoring the rules. Well, speaking of tradition, Caroline told me I was responsible for one. But, you know what an overachiever I am, I handled two. Oh. I was going to make a big presentation at the party, but I decided that this was a private moment.

Okay. Oh,

I never owned anything so gorgeous. You see what I did there? Yeah. Something new and blue covered. Come on, let’s make sure it fits. Okay. Left wrist, I think. Oh,

it’s beautiful. I love it. And I love you. Come here.

You know, your life is all wrong. Tell me about it. Seriously, you should be honored, valued, worshipped for the goddess you are, not tossed aside for some pale imitation. You are starting to be very good for my ego. Well, go with it. Put yourself in my hands. Forget about Bill. Even if it’s for one night. Let me remind you of who you were in those photos.

Who you still are. I’m

giving you this chance now. To give me all the love that you can now. Caught up in emotions. Caught up. Oh, you got me. Caught up in emotions. Caught up. Oh, baby. Caught up in emotions. Caught up. Oh, you got me. Caught up in emotions. You caught up in my feelings. I give you the key to my heartbeat. Free to go exploring if you want, baby.

Take a hit of this and we can talk now. We on a whole nother level. We know about. Yeah.

THIS STILL NEEDS EXTENSIVE EDITING!

That beautiful mind is working all the time. I was just thinking about back in the day before we had kids. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not wishing them away. I love our family something fierce. You don’t have to tell me and no need to explain. I think I know where you’re going. You always do. Things were a lot simpler when it was just the two of us.

Exactly. The problems were with the world. And we were either innocent or arrogant enough to believe that we could solve them with a heartfelt vocal or some civil disobedience. And sometimes we did. Or came close. Now that mindset has turned once we had Nicole and Dani and the grandkids. When they hurt, we bleed.

Not so simple anymore. I could kill Bill Hamilton with my bare hands. There’d be satisfaction in that. Mm hmm. But as practical solutions go, any second thoughts about the way forward? We don’t have a choice. Martin must be protected. Unfortunately, that means Dani will pay the price yet again.

Obviously, I need the room to handle this unexpected situation. We’ll pick up when I’m done. Close the door, please.

Nicely done. Very dramatic. And blue, always been your color. You happy now? You feel better? Got a little something something out of your system? Not yet. I’m getting there.

Who knew my baby girl would grow up and have such a head for business. I put her marketing concept into place and bookings increased by 10%. Told you they would. Okay. Impressive. Now that’s the type of skill set that’ll take you far in life. That’s the plan. Mm-hmm . Speaking of plans, did you decide to shoot the video bio here or at the clinic?

Um, I like your office to highlight the professional side and the grounds at Uncle Ted’s for a more personal angle. Hey, you’re not camera shy, are you? Not a bit. My beautiful wife is getting an award for her prestigious work as a psychiatrist. They want me on tape? I’m there. Andre and I were thinking it’d be cool to hear you guys tell your story.

How you met, your first impressions of each other. Man, what it’s like to have such a solid marriage. Everyone wants one, only a few succeed. Well, I can talk about this woman all day long. So good to see you, nephew. You’re looking well, too. Thank you. Man, um, yeah, it was touch and go there for a minute, but you guys wouldn’t let me fall.

Y’all literally saved me. If I had every second of every day to spend, Trying, I could never repay you. Thank you.

Love you, nephew.

How do you stand living your life so loud? You can’t go anywhere without being scrutinized and judged. Just part of being who I am in the world we live in. And a good thing too. My social media presence is about to become more important than ever. Why? What’s going on? I need your input. You’re the only person who’s experienced our mother exactly the same way I have.

Oh god, what’s she done now? It’s what I’m about to do. I’m gonna shake things up. Start my own purse line with Kat. Oh! Uh, and how does mom feel about you splitting her focus? I won’t be. I’m quitting. Wait, you mean modeling? Bingo. The question being, where will that leave mom? Okay. Put on quite a show. Came in here wielding weapons and slapping people.

Why, Dani? Huh? What do you want? You know, beating you with your own golf club and watching you die a slow, agonizing death would be fun. But I’ll settle for answers. How dare you, Bill. How dare you move your whore into my community. Hayley is not a whore. Okay? And we like the house. It suits our needs. You were gone.

You left Fairmont when you left me. Got a place in Eagle Harbor. Why can’t you and Hayley live there? I sold that house. Yeah, I’ve been standing a suite at the Ritz until after the wedding. Okay, then buy someplace else. There are tons of communities to choose from. Fairmont Crest is the best address in Maryland.

And it was my home for many years. Do I need to remind you how you ended up in Fairmont in the first place? It was because you were married to me. Dani Dupree. It was my pedigree, my money, my family connections that opened those gates to you, my father who jump started your career. If it weren’t for me, you would still be a lowly public servant trying to make ends meet.

Hey, okay. Get over yourself, Dani. Huh? I would be in the exact same place that I am right now. I just would have gotten here a different way. And I’m going to tell you something. You didn’t make me. And your father didn’t make me either. I made myself. And I brought you along for the ride.

You okay, Les? You seem down. What? Oh, sorry. Uh, that guy over there reminded me about him. I drifted. Sometimes it just happens. To be expected. Grief doesn’t happen in a straight line. And it hasn’t been all that long since you lost Alan. Alan filled the holes in my heart. Since he’s been gone, it’s like those spaces are just Hollow.

No. Hey, listen. I am not trying to bring you guys down. All right, so I would much rather hear about the tea From those rich folks behind the gates. So who is going to spill? Well, I guess the big news is what happened at the country club restaurant Fairmont Crest is buzzing. My phone totally blew up. Mine too.

Okay, what happened? Woo, Dani almost put Hayley on the floor. What? From what I heard, if it hadn’t been for a bar stool or a table breaking her fall, Hayley would have been ass over tea kettle. Dani pushed her. Punched her in the face. Get out. In front of a whole house. Now that is delicious. And good for Dani.

You know, you can’t home break a woman and expect her not to react. Vanessa said she wasn’t surprised. She went to Dani’s this morning for coffee and found Dani throwing mugs against the wall. Girl. Ooh. Anything to add? Not really. Everything went smoothly at Nicole and Ted’s. Nothing but love. Must be wonderful being Nicole Dupree Richardson.

I wonder what it’s like. Talk about a woman who has everything. Nicole deserves all the blessings. She’s an amazing, inspirational person. It’s no wonder Ted adores her. That first year after the plane crash was the darkest. I’d ever lived through the shock, the grief. It was unbearable to lose Stan and Iris so suddenly.

Ted and I haven’t flown together since. I’d hate to think who I would’ve become if you guys had not insisted that I stay with you those first few months. We were happy to help you any way we could. You didn’t just help me. You saved my life, the three of you. And Martin, I will always be grateful. Nothing you guys couldn’t ask of me.

We love you, Andre.

So happy to have you home. For however long it lasts. Yeah. Hey, why don’t I turn the tables? I’ll take a picture of you for once. Nah, I’d rather you not. Yeah, I’m not too keen on having my mug splashed all over social media. Prefer my place to be behind the camera. In fact, uh, join your parents. Come on. Back up, back up.

Alright. Nicole in the middle. Uncle Ted. Come on, man. Loosen the jacket up. This looks good. Okay, cool. Alright. Alright, smile pretty now. Say cheese. Nobody does that, Dad. Here’s the thing. Mom is grown. And so are you. If modeling doesn’t float your boat anymore, you get to walk away into whatever does. It’s, it’s not that I’m ungrateful.

Mom built a career that’s been very good to me. I make great money. Modeling is the reason why I have a social media presence in the first place. But, I want to do what’s mine. Not something that Mom chose for me. Walk my own path, you know? Stop being under Mom’s control. It’s me, Chelsea. You know, the one that left Fairmont five years ago?

Opened my own firm, married Jacob, and never looked back? You don’t have to justify needing change to me. You want to spread your wings, and there’s nothing wrong with it. Hell, Mom did it when she was younger than you. And she certainly did not let Grandmother’s objections slow her down one bit. I know.

It’s just, she’s so brittle and fragile right now. And being my manager is all she has left. Do you remember when we were growing up, how we’d tiptoe around Mom until we could get a read on her mood? I still do. And you always will. Unless you cut the cord. Mom is always something emotional. It’s always big and demands energy and attention from whoever’s closest.

And since I’ve moved out, that burden has fallen onto you. Especially since she’s such a part of your career. I hear what you’re saying. It’s just I feel guilty. It’s the only life you get, Chelsea. And bottom line, our mother is a survivor. It took me finding a place in the world separate from her to truly get that.

Now, it’s not gonna be easy, but maybe it’s time you create some distance of your own. I don’t even know who you are anymore. When did you start getting so much pleasure out of hurting me? That wasn’t the intention. It’s just the way things turned out. We built a life together. We made a family and you left like it was nothing.

Did you ever love me? I loved you very much. Then how could you treat me so shabbily? You are literally throwing a woman who blew up my marriage in my face. How much am I supposed to take, Jill? That’s the thing. It’s not about you, Dani. It’s about me. And what I need for my life now. And that’s Hayley. I’m sorry you’re having a hard time accepting that our marriage is over, but it really is this simple.

I fell in love with someone else. You promised me forever. I gave up everything for you. You were on a path and you chose to change course. Eddie, we had a good run. Our marriage worked. Until it didn’t. Until Hayley came along. We were in trouble long before Hayley. I didn’t know that. Was our marriage perfect?

Not by a long shot. You cheated on me, Bill. More than once. And I look the other way because, because some men are incapable of being faithful to one woman. And because I loved you. But I choked on my pride and I pretended it wasn’t happening because I thought that’s what you needed. And I thought that’s what I had to do to keep our family together.

But I never considered us in trouble. You had it both ways. Why would you leave? Uh, Dani, look, I can’t do this with you, okay? This is my place of business. I can’t do this. Right? People change. Okay? Situations change. We accept a new reality and we move on. That’s what Hayley and I hope you can do. Maybe even get to the point where you can wish us well.

Never. In fact, I hope your life is a misery. If I could put a curse on you, I would. You selfish, heartless bastard. One more thing. Slapping me? Whatever. I can take whatever you dish out. But if you ever raise another hand to Hayley You’re what? You couldn’t possibly hurt me more than you already have. Don’t try me.

I’m not afraid of you.

I hope you got an earful of what’s coming for you. You’re not special, Hayley. And you sure as hell ain’t the first. Remember what they say. Past is prologue.

Is this, uh, seat taken? I’m waiting for someone. I doubt that. Excuse me? You did a good job with the disguise, but I know who you are. I know you anywhere. I’m your biggest fan.

Blow this joint with me, and I’ll prove it. I found it’s a good policy not to get intimate with my fans, but There’s something about you. Oh, good, I don’t have to drink alone. Vodka martini, very dry, very cold. Why are you wearing sunglasses? And who’s he?

He’s not Doug, that’s for sure.

Randy Parker. What’s up, my man? Doug McBride. You tell me. Don’t sweat it. I got what you came for.

They were all good, my friend. Later. We all good.

I’m gonna be at Chelsea’s shoot tomorrow, is that okay with you? Uh, sure, you can be my assistant. I should warn you, it’ll probably be tense. Aunt Dani mommages Chelsea hard when things are fine. And this ain’t that. I hear you, I hear you. So, where my referee hat? So, what have you been up to since we last saw you?

Just got back from Bali, photographing a new resort. Oh, I’m sorry. Somebody’s gotta do it. It was horrible what you went through. Losing both of your parents like that. They’ve been gone ten years now. It’s hard to believe. I can’t even imagine. But I so admire the way you put your life back together. Doing what you love on your own terms.

Isn’t that what we all strive for? Yeah. But the money my parents left me gives me that freedom. So it’s still kind of weird. But you give what you make from photography to charities your mom supported, so it kind of balances out in a good way. True. That’s the hope, at least. But what about you? From what I can see, Kat Richardson is all about work.

No love interest in your life, or? Plenty of time for that. Right now, I’m concentrating on learning what I need to know about business. Chelsea and I are going to do big things, but that’s a secret for now. Safe with me? I know.

Always.

I wish we didn’t have to do this. You and me both. It kills me to know that we’ll be adding to Dani’s pain. While giving in to Bill. And gifting Haley with a legitimacy she doesn’t deserve. I suppose there’s another option. We can call Bill’s bluff. Bank on him saving the trump card for a bigger hand.

What if he doesn’t? That little girl has got his nose open about as wide as it gets. Look at what Bill has already thrown away because of her. We can’t roll the dice on Martin’s future. Have you told him about this? No, and I don’t intend to. This is ours to handle. We never speak about that night. With good reason.

Do you ever regret the choices we made?

I’d do it all again. Exactly the same. Me too. So, we move forward as planned.

I’ve noticed you and Laura are still at the house when I’m leaving. Oh, we’ve definitely been putting in overtime. Oh, well that’s gonna look good on your paychecks. And it also explains why you’ve been missing from quiet practice. Oh. We will be seeing you again soon, right? I’ll be there tonight. I promise Laura will be done by seven.

Hey, Martin. Um, come sit. Yeah, what’s up?

So, there’s been something on my mind for a while now. I almost brought it up last time you were having your dreams, but they evened out. And your sleep has been peaceful. I hoped it would stay that way, but here we are again. And you’re right. I do have that part of my brain that searches for answers whether that annoys you or not.

So, I’m just gonna throw this out there. It’s quite a preamble. Are you going to hear me out? I’m sitting here, aren’t I? Maybe these dreams are about something that you don’t want to remember. From intrepid reporter to amateur therapist. You must have too much time on your hands. There’s no story here, Smitty.

No mystery to solve. I have bad dreams that I don’t recall. If that’s too disturbing for you, I’ll move into the guest room. Well, that’s a bit extreme.

That’s weird. What? I’ve been summoned. Sudden family meeting at my grandparents. Thanks for your always on point advice. Are you taking it? Eventually. But not until this awful wedding is behind us and mom’s feeling better. I can bide my time a little longer. You’re a good kid. I’m a grown ass woman. You’ll always be my baby sister no matter how old you get.

Whatever. Oh, is that synchronicity or what? Family meeting? Seven o’clock, no excuses.

That’s mother’s text tone. She’s old school. She always calls. Mine is from Grandmother 2. Family meeting at the house. Presence required? I hope Dani hasn’t lost her mind and gone left on somebody. I, uh, I hired this fine young gentleman to do a little role playing. I’m Incognito Taylor, and this is my biggest fan.

You’re joking, right?

Of course I am. This is Zeke. Zeke from my office. Thank you, Zeke, for dropping off the keys. Anytime. You know where to find me. Oh, a little role play with that one might not be such a bad idea. You could probably use the distraction. You are not kidding. I just left Bill. I thought confronting him would give me some, I don’t know, release?

Closure? Didn’t happen? It’s so frustrating. I cannot reach a man who I was married to for over 30 years. Bill is completely shut down on me. Nothing I say or do penetrates that. It’s hurtful. And it fills me with even more anger. And there’s nowhere for that anger to go. Anyway, I have made a decision. I have to get Chelsea through a photo shoot tomorrow, and then I’m going to hop a plane to Paris.

Ooh, there is a plan I can wholeheartedly endorse. A change of scenery can work miracles. That’s my mother. Command appearance at my parents. That can’t be good. If that bastard ex husband of mine has done one more thing to disrespect me, I cannot be held responsible for my reaction.

I absolutely love it. Love what? Laura just got me this. Aww, that’s lovely. Did I miss an occasion? No, no, just the thank you from me to Mona. Is there anything I need to know before I leave? Yes, the smaller banquet room at the Country Club is available both nights, we’re considering for the sponsorship presentation.

Great, I will decide soon. Why don’t you both take off? I know you’ve been working extra hours. You don’t have to tell me twice. I’ve been wanting to get to choir rehearsal tonight. Uh, I’ll finish up a few things and be on my way. I want to do some online shopping for our trip to Maui. Oh, I have a special place in my heart for that island.

That is where I met Ted. I didn’t know that. At a National Medical Association conference a million years ago. Best week of my life up until then. Anyway, I gotta run. Hopefully, oh thank you. Hopefully this meeting is about something other than Bill and his hateful wedding.

I am so furious with Dad. I can’t even see straight. This in your face wedding to my former friend. Getting married at the country club? Buying a house close to mom, it is reprehensible even for him. Totally. I’m so glad I live in D. C. Running into dad and Haley all the time would be a nightmare. No kidding.

You know, back in the day, when I was a daddy’s girl, living to please him and wanting to be like him, I never would have believed the day would come when I would despise him this much. Well, strong word. Well, he earned it. And not just for Hayley, though that would have been enough. The way he took mom for granted.

The affairs. The way he twists and subverts the law to get his guilty clients off. But even with all of that, I could still look into dad’s eyes and see someone that I loved. Not anymore. I knew you were angry with him. I guess I didn’t realize how broken things are between you. You and dad were always so close.

Yeah, that’ll never be true again. As far as I’m concerned, I don’t have a father. Naomi, don’t.

This was knocked off the desk when Dani swung that club. Gotta love the symbolism. Hey, it’s just glass and frame. Easily replaced. Yeah, unlike our relationships with Naomi. She was my first real friend. I miss her in my life, and I know you miss your daughter. Yeah, yeah, of course. I’m sure in time we’ll be back on track.

I hope. I’m worth your loss. Hey. I wouldn’t be with you if you weren’t. You reawakened me, Hayley. I didn’t even realize it, I was just going through the motions. You know, pretending that feeling dead inside was an okay way to live. That I didn’t miss catching my breath at the touch of a woman I love, you gave that back to me.

Jump started my heart and a few other things. Hey, I will never be sorry I chose you.

Here at the Grands, we’re family meeting, no idea why. Y’all know my sister Naomi is a badass lawyer, but did y’all know she can sing? Eat your heart out, J Hood! Okay, peeps. Chicken later or not. You want me to fix you a plate? Do not point that thing at me again. And no, I will eat at home with Jacob. Thank God there’s food.

I’m starving.

That’s a lot of meat you got there. What are you, the salami police? You have a photo shoot tomorrow. And I’m channeling Aunt Dani. Sorry. Well, if you’re gonna eat it, eat it fast before she gets here. Too late. Oh.

There. Much better. Why do you hate me? It is just as easy to eat healthy food as it is junk. Especially right before a shoot. Chill, Mom. Let Chelsea live. I don’t remember asking for your two cents. Oh! Is there anything I can do to support Aunt Dani? Actually, there might be. Everybody’s been trying to get her to move on from Bill because she definitely needs to.

But maybe you could be a different voice. One that validates how she’s feeling because that’s legitimate too. Assignment understood and accepted. Does anyone know why we’re here? Mother! Daddy! What’s going on? There’s been a change in plan you’re not going to like. Well, I have a change of plan of my own that maybe will negate the need for yours.

So I’ll go first. I am going to Paris tomorrow night. That won’t do. What do you mean? Now is the perfect time for me to get as far away as possible. And we need you here. At least through Friday. Bill and Hayley’s wedding is Friday. That’s what I’m trying to get away from. We’re going. Say it again? I can’t have heard you right.

The Duprees will be attending the wedding. As a family. Including you, Dani.

Dammit, Mother. No.

Hey Mona, Nicole decided on the menu for the Lynx brunch. She likes number three. Okay, I’m headed out now. I’ll see you tomorrow. Bye.

I’ll ignore the fact you just cursed at me in my own home. I understand this is yet another blow you weren’t expecting. I’m just as shocked as Dani. Why in the world would our family attend that horror show of a wedding? Thank you! Do I have to remind you of who we are? Dupree’s don’t cower, we don’t hide.

If Bill has the stones to marry that little heifer in our community, then he can do it while looking into our pissed off faces. And not just us. Anita and I want a community turnout. I’ll be making the necessary phone calls. Let me get this straight. You want me to support my ex husband’s marriage to another woman?

Doesn’t sound like support to me. More like making Bill and Haley as uncomfortable as possible. There you go. I won’t do it. No one’s suggesting you wish them well. Just be there. Radiating all the hostility you please. Truthfully, I don’t hate the idea of making Dad and Haley accountable to this family.

Haley invited us. Invited everyone. She is incapable of shame. The answer is no. Disown me. Disinherit me. Whatever. I am out of the Mortify Dani business.

Dani. Dani! A word.

What is happening, Daddy?

Your mother and I haven’t asked a lot of you. In fact, we pretty much let you have your way since you were a teenager. I realize this doesn’t make sense to you. But I wouldn’t put it on you without a good reason. And if I’m not telling you that reason,

It’s because I can’t. I’m asking you to trust me. To do this for me.

I hate this. With every fiber of my being. But if it is this important to you, Fine.

I’ll be there.

Thank you.

Did she agree? Yes. But, she feels betrayed again. This time, by us. We’ll make it right with Dani. But we did what we needed to do.

Are you okay, mom? What just happened? I don’t know. Looks like we’re going to a wedding. I don’t understand. Neither do I. But it’s important to my dad. Are you gonna be able to get through this? I guess we’ll see. I smell Gil all over this. He got to my parents somehow. Guess he wants to keep that little tramp happy.

Why else would he care? Well, just Well, turn it around. You know, be that wall of hostility Grandmother mentioned. Make them sorry we came. Mm hmm. Maybe even ruin the ceremony altogether. Like, I could be so upset, I get sick to my stomach and barf all over Hayley and her stupid dress. Ew. Don’t tempt me to encourage you.

I’m sorry, Mom. About all of this. So am I. Thank you. I appreciate the support. It’ll be over soon. And in the meantime, we got you. We got you.

Update written by Suzanne

Martin naps on the couch, having a nightmare. Smitty wakes him up, so he jerks awake, sweating.

Anita looks out the window. Vernon comes in, wondering what she’s thinking so hard about. She was remembering their early days of marriage, when times were simpler. They thought they could change the world. It’s much harder to deal with the problems that arise from having children and grandchildren. Anita concludes, “They hurt, we bleed.” She vents that she could kill Bill with her bare hands. Vernon says they don’t have a choice on how to go forward. Martin must be protected. She laments that Dani will pay the price – again.

Meanwhile, Dani threatens Bill with his golf club, so he tells the others to leave and close the door. He wants to know what she wants and if she feels better, having gotten that out of her system. She says that she doesn’t yet, but then she slaps him, hard.

In Nicole’s office, Ted praises Kat’s marketing skills. Her ideas have increased his bookings by 10% (he’s a plastic surgeon). Andre is impressed and notes that her talents will take her far in life. Nicole asks him where he’s shooting the video bio. He replies that he’ll shoot tin her office, and also on Ted’s grounds. He jokingly asks Ted if he’s camera shy. Ted says that he’s not and he’ll be there to support his beautiful wife, who’s getting an award. Ted and Nicole hold each other in their arms. Kat and Andre agree that the couple should talk about how they met and the rest of their story. Ted praises Andre and says that it’s good to see him. Andre points out that they all saved him. He thanks them, saying he can never repay them. He and Ted hug warmly.

Naomi and Chelsea watch one of Chelsea’s social media videos and talk about it. Naomi doesn’t know how Chelsea can live such a public life – always being judged. It doesn’t bother Chelsea. She tells her sister about the purse line that she and Kat are working on. Naomi thinks it sounds great but wonders how their mom, Dani, will feel. Chelsea hasn’t told Dani yet about her plans, or that she’s quitting modeling.

Bill picks up chairs, making fun of Dani for threatening him and slapping him. She says that beating him to death would be fun, but she demands answers. How dare he move his whore into her community, she asks. He bristles at that, saying that Hayley is no whore. They like it there in Fairmont Crest. He sold his house and has been living in a suite at the Ritz. She suggests, exasperated, that he find another house, outside of their community. He says that it’s the best address in Maryland. She reminds him that it was marrying her, and getting help from her family, that moved him into their community in the first place, and it was her father’s connections that jump-started his career. He laughs derisively, telling her to get over herself. He states that he would have gotten to the same place, with or without their help. They didn’t make him; he made himself and brought her along for the ride. She looks at him like he’s crazy.

Leslie, AKA Dana, sits with Jan and Mona at the diner, Orphy Gene’s. Jan notices that Leslie seems down. She says that the guy sitting nearby reminds her of her late husband, Alan. They know she lost him not too long ago, but she’s still processing her grief. Leslie brightens up and asks to hear about the rich folks gossip. Mona tells her about Dani punching Hayley, and also about how Vanessa saw her throw the coffee cups. She asks Mona for more, but Mona says that things go smoothly at Ted and Nicole’s. They are in love. Leslie admires Nicole, so Mona says that Nicole is amazing and inspirational.

Andre recalls his first year after the plane crash that killed his parents, Stan and Ira (I guess Ira is a girl’s name here). Nicole tells him that she and Ted haven’t flown together since. Andre hates to think how his life would’ve turned out if not for them and Martin. Kat hugs him. They’re happy to have him home. Kat wants to take his photo, but he won’t let her. He doesn’t want to be on social media. He takes a photo of the three of them, instead.

Naomi advises Chelsea that both she and Dani are adults, so she can do what she wants and not have to worry about Dani. Chelsea just wants to do her own thing. Naomi can relate because she moved away, married Jacob and opened her own firm. Dani also did that she was young, ignoring her parents’ wishes. Chelsea feels that Dani is very fragile right now and that being her manager is all she has. Naomi reminds her of when they were younger, always waiting to see what mood Dani was in. They still do that, and she thinks Chelsea should move out, to get away from all that. Chelsea feels guilty, but Phoebe tells her that there’s only one life, and that Dani is a survivor. It’s not easy, but she has to create a distance of her own.

Dani and Bill argue. He says that his marrying Hayley is not about her. He fell in love. She knew he was unfaithful, but she ignored it, to keep the family together. He says that he can’t do this with her. He says that people change and move on. He postulates that maybe one day, she can wish he and Hayley well. She replies, “Never.” and hopes that he has a long life of misery. She would put a curse on him if she could, and she calls him a selfish, heartless bastard. He warns her never to touch Hayley again. She storms out of his office, but Hayley is outside, so she figures she must have heard everything. She sneers at Hayley that she’s not special and warns her that “Past is prologue.” Once she gets in the elevator, Dani breaks down, crying.

Vanessa is in a bar called Upswing (at the country club?). She’s sitting in a booth, wearing sunglasses and a scarf, like she’s in disguise. A handsome man comes in and takes the other seat. He flirts with her and grabs her knee under the table, which she enjoys. Dani arrives, orders a drink and wonders what’s going on. She can tell that this is not Vanessa’s husband, Doug.

Doug is sitting in his car when a man named Randy Parker gets in. Doug hands him some kind of paper or packet. They shake hands, and Randy leaves.

Kat lets Andre know that she’ll bet at the photo shoot tomorrow. He agrees that she can be his assistant. She warns that things will be tense between Dani and Chelsea. She asks him how he’s doing, so he tells her that he’s been photographing a new resort in Bali. They laugh about how tough that must have been. She feels bad that he lost his parents in a horrible accident, even though it was 10 years ago. She admires that he lives his life on his own terms. He reminds her that he lives off his parents’ inheritance, which makes him feel uncomfortable, but she thinks it balances out, since he gives so much to charity. He asks what she’s been to and whether she has anyone. She shares that she’s been working a lot and has no time for romance. She’s been learning about business. She declares that she and Chelsea will do big things, but she swears him to secrecy for now. He agrees, and they do a brother-sister type of secret handshake, which is cute.

Anita and Vernon look at a photo of Dani as a baby. It kills them that they have to add to her pain, as well as give in to Bill and help Hayley. Vernon suggests that they call his bluff, but Anita doesn’t want to gamble with Martin’s future. Vernon tells her that she’s not telling Martin about any of this, and she agrees. She notes that they’ve never spoke about “that night,” and he adds that it’s for good reason. They don’t admit their choices, so they’ll move forward as planned. Then they hug.

Mona leaves her friends at Orphy Gene’s to go back to work. She complains about having too much work and overtime. Leslie points out that she’ll be glad to get that in her paycheck. She has missed Mona at choir practice.

Smitty tells Martin that he thinks he should talk to someone about the nightmares he’s been having. Martin doesn’t react well to that suggestion. Martin gets a text about a sudden family meeting with his grandparents, so he has to leave.

Naomi and Chelsea hug. Chelsea decides that she’ll wait until after the wedding, and Dani’s feeling better, to tell her the news. They both the text, too.

Nicole, Ted and the rest also get the text. Nicole hopes that Dani didn’t do something she shouldn’t.

Vanessa tells Dani that she hired the guy for some role-playing. She’s Incognito Taylor and he’s her biggest fan. Dani looks shocked, so Vanessa laughs and says that she’s joking. She introduces the guy to Dani as Zeke from her office. She thanks him for dropping off her keys, and he leaves. Dani notes that role-playing with him might not be such a bad idea. She tells Vanessa about her visit with Bill (leaving out the golf club and the slap). Dani vents to Vanessa that she can’t reach the man that she was married to for her over 30 years. It just makes her hurt and more angry. She’s decided to go to Paris after Chelsea’s photo shoot tomorrow. Vanessa thinks that’s a great idea. Dani gets the text. She says that if Bill has done one more thing to disrespect her, she can’t be held responsible for her reaction. She leaves.

Mona gets a bracelet from Laura as a thank-you for her previous advice. Nicole walks in and admires it. Laura tells Nicole that the smaller country club room is available for both nights. Nicole just has to choose which night. She tells them both to take off early. When Laura brings up Maui again, Nicole mentions that she met Ted at a medical conference there.

Naomi spills her guts to Chelsea about how angry she is at their dad. She despises him for the affairs and the way he treated their mom. She no longer feels any love toward him. Chelsea is shocked by what she said because they used to be so close. Nicole declares, “Never again,” saying that she has no father.

Bill and Hayley pick up debris in his office, including a photo of them (now the glass is cracked). She’s sad that they both lost their relationship with Naomi. She misses her. She hopes that she’s worth his losses. He agrees that she is worth it. He was going through the motions before meeting her. She jump-started his heart. He tells her that he’ll never regret being with her, and he kisses her.

Naomi plays piano and sings a little, at her grandparents’ place. Chelsea is on her phone nearby, on her live social media feed. She tries to take a video of Naomi, but Naomi waves her off. Nicole and the rest of her family arrive. Kat suggests to Chelsea that she’s eating too much meat (before the photo shoot tomorrow). She apologizes for acting like Dani and urges Chelsea to eat it, quick, before Dani arrives. It’s too late because Dani arrives and takes the plate away from Chelsea. Chelsea seems used to this, so she doesn’t even resist. Dani fixes her a plate of vegetables instead. Naomi suggests to Dani that she let Chelsea live her own life, but Dani doesn’t want to hear what she says. She says that eating healthy food is just as easy as eating junk food. Martins asks Nicole quietly how he can help. Nicole says that Dani needs someone to listen to her. Vernon and Anita arrive.

They tell their family that there’s been a change of plans, and they won’t like. Dani tells them, first, that she’s going to Paris tomorrow, but Vernon says that won’t do because they need everyone there to go to the wedding as a family. Dani, shocked, says, “No!”

Laura tells someone on the phone that Nicole likes option #3 for the Lynch brunch menu. She heads out from the office, alone.

Anita reminds them all that they’re Duprees – they don’t cower or hide. She says, “If Bill has the nerve to marry that heifer in our community, then he’ll do it looking at their pissed-off faces.” Vernon says that it’s not just their family; he needs to get people from the community to turn out for it, too. Dani can’t believe they want her to support her ex, who’s marrying again. Martin says he’s all in for making Bill and Hayley as uncomfortable as possible. Dani refuses, but Anita tells her that she needs to be there. Naomi also likes the idea. Dani storms off. Vernon follows her and asks her to attend, saying that he has a good reason that he can’t tell her. He asks her to trust him. She agrees, reluctantly. He kisses her on the forehead and thanks her. Vernon goes back and tells Anita that Dani feels betrayed all over again. Anita assures him that they’ll make it right.

Later, Naomi and Chelsea ask Dani if she’s okay. They don’t understand what’s going on. Dani figures that Bill got to her parents somehow. They think of ways that they could ruin the wedding and sympathize with Dani’s feelings. They tell her, “We got you,” and they all huge.

Laura drives home, but someone behind her comes up, fast, with their brights on, and she’s run off the road. Leslie arrives at home, all dressed in a black motorcycle outfit. She smiles after taking off the helmet.

THIS STILL NEEDS EXTENSIVE EDITING!

Laura: Hey, Nicole. I was just about to text you.

Nicole: What’s going on?

Laura: Have you made any progress on deciding the recipient of the Dupree Heritage Foundation Scholarship?

Nicole: I haven’t. I might need your input. How do you pick one winner out of all of those amazing kids? Maybe I should streamline the process, not have so many categories.

Laura: I don’t know. To me, that’s what makes it so special. Singers, dancers, artists, musicians. It’s inclusive. All you need to apply is talent.

Nicole: It’s just so difficult. Every single candidate is deserving. I think this might be the most talented group ever.

Laura: You know you say this every year. And every year you manage to make the exact right pick, and another kid gets an opportunity he or she wouldn’t have had without you and your family.

Mona: I’ve been working with the chef on the Lynx brunch. We’ve got three menu possibilities. If you could choose just one today–

Nicole: Email them I’ll look through

Mona: Okay.

Vernon: You could bottle that beauty Where you haven’t changed since you were in your 20s You don’t take care of me.

Anita: You old sweet talker. I’d be no need for my services

So, how’s your morning going so far?

Vernon: How much time you got?

Anita: You still look good out there on the course.

Vernon: Age ain’t nothing but a number. The kids seem to like it.

Anita: Oh good, to open up the world to them.

Martin: So, are we gonna talk about what happened or pretend it didn’t?

Vernon: You mean that scene at the restaurant?

Martin: Yes. Who knew Aunt Dani was packing a left hook like that?

Vernon: Nothing to be proud of. I hated seeing my daughter pushed to a point where she would think that hitting someone was the appropriate action. Physical violence is never the answer.

Martin: I get where you’re coming from, and I know nonviolence has always been at the core of your belief system. But this isn’t the bad old days.  Some people deserve to get a punch in the face.

Vernon: It distresses me to hear you say that. On the other hand, I can certainly understand the urge to strike out. When you’ve been maligned and mistreated and Dani has. Breaks my heart to see her suffer. Now Bill is moving into Fairmont Crest with Haley. Why do that?

I mean, I understand that people fall out of love. Marriages break up. Couples come apart. But there’s a way to end it that leaves the other person standing in their dignity. If you’re a decent human being with regards to others.

But that’s not Bill. Hayley thinks she’s fallen into some fairy tale. But she’ll find out who he is soon enough.

Bill: Hey, I was just wondering where you were. Thought you’d be at the office by now.

Hayley: I have a stop to make.

Bill: Everything okay?

Hayley: It’s been a morning so far, but hoping to salvage what’s left.

Anita: What are you doing?

Dani: Remembering the good times. There were so many. Look. You see how happy we were. Bill loved me. It’s right there in his eyes. I’m not delusional.  Everyone always said we made such a beautiful couple and we did. So how could Bill just throw us away?

Anita: Alright, Dani. That’s enough.

Dani: I’m trying to understand what happened to the life we made. How am I left in this house all alone?

Anita: It’s okay, baby. Mommy’s here.

Martin: What’s with the look?

Vernon: I’m just wondering if everything’s okay.

Martin: What wouldn’t be?

Vernon: Things good at home?

Martin: Sure, why do you ask?

Vernon: Something you said earlier that stuck with me, about wanting more. Uh, that could mean you’re restless, and restlessness can be a sign, a warning sign of trouble at home.

Martin: No. Home is solid. Restless. You could say that. It’s not always a bad thing. Keeps you alert, ready for what’s next. That’s what I’m trying to figure out. What’s my next step? My next challenge?

Vernon: Whatever it turns out to be, I’ll be there to help.

Martin: As if you haven’t done enough. I’ve gotten all the way to the House of Representatives because of you. Because of your guidance, your experience, and the wisdom you share.  I owe everything to you, Granddad.

Dani: Don’t let me do that.

Anita: You’re not allowed to cry?

Dani: I hate it. It’s weak.

Anita: Better out than in.

Dani: I suppose you’re angry at me. Is that why you’re here? To yell at me?

Anita: I don’t yell.

Dani: You don’t have to. Your tone does it for you.

Anita: That was quite a display of temper.

Dani: Hayley is stealing my life.  One piece at a time. All of a sudden, I look up and she’s walking into the restaurant like she belonged there.

Anita: So you thought hitting her was a good idea?

Dani: In the moment? Yeah. And you know what? Felt better than anything has in a long time. If that makes me an awful person, so be it.

Anita: That makes you human. Now, I don’t ordinarily condone violence, you know that.  But sometimes folks deserve a sucker punch. So, no lecture, no blame. You did what you did, and now it’s over. Please, try not to make it a habit.

Dani: I thought I was okay. Not 100%, but getting there. Those six months. Waiting for the divorce to finalize. It gave me time to come to terms with the end of my marriage.  Even the way it ended. Then those papers came. And that same day, Bill and Haley booked the country club.

Anita: I know.

Dani: They could get married anywhere, Mom. Just like they could live anywhere. Why here? Where I am trying to put my life back together. What did I do to deserve that level of disregard from a man who I spent most of my life catering to?  A man I built a family with.

Anita: Now you stop right there. You haven’t done anything except be a better wife to Bill than he ever deserved. He’s the bad guy here, not you. Keep that straight. I know you, Dani. I know how deeply you feel. I know how hard it is for you to let go of hurt and anger, but honey, if you don’t, it will turn back on you and eat you alive.  While Bill and Haley are going on about their business, not giving you a second thought. Now you need to remember who you are. A Dupree woman. We don’t turn our power over to anyone. Tap into that heritage. Find your inner strength. And stop letting those losers get the best of you.

Seems Bill had another card to play. He just bought that house on Marigold.

With him and Hayley?

Damn, that’s cold, even for Bill.

I don’t think I have to tell you, Dani went ballistic.

Of course she did. And Bill knew she would.

Oh, I don’t think he anticipated exactly what ended up happening. Hayley had the unfortunate timing of sauntering through the restaurant right after Vanessa dropped the bomb.

Uh oh.

Dani read her for filth. And then punched her in the face.

You serious?

Oh, yeah. Ah, it was a good one, too.

And I missed it. How come nothing scandalous ever happens at the country club when I’m there?

Our membership fees are supposed to protect us from scandalous.

Nicole: I have been trying to keep my cool.  Being my sister’s voice of reason, God knows she needs one. But the careless way Bill has been treating her, it infuriates me. Dani gave up everything for that man. And don’t even get me started on Hayley. Dani was good to her. Treated her like family. And Hayley was supposed to be Naomi’s friend. I feel like punching somebody myself.

I’d hate to see that happen.

I’m sorry, Dani’s having a tough time. Me too. Hoping once this wedding is behind us, she’ll feel the finality of it and move on with her life. Find somebody worthy who will actually appreciate her.

If there’s anything that I can do, just let me know. In the meanwhile, I have to get down to the hospital. I have a consult on a facial reconstruction.

Oh, um, will you be available this afternoon? Andre is coming by to scope out the hospital for that video bio for the award ceremony. I know he would love to see his favorite uncle.

I’ll make it happen.

Nicole: Andre is not here very often. What do you think about having a family gathering?

Ted: Sounds like a plan. Mmm, you smell delicious.

Nicole: Oh, get out of here.

Nurse, you go to ICU.

What are you guys doing here?

We know you’re busy. So we won’t stay long. I wanted to make sure you have a nice, healthy lunch.

Everyone is feeding me today.

Makes sense. Food is love.

I’m so proud of you, honey. All that hard work, it paid off.

I’ve only known you for a few months, but I can already tell you are going to be an awesome nurse.

I hope so.

You doubt it?

I mean, that’s the plan. To be the best. But there is a definite learning curve, and you cannot predict what will happen from one moment to the next.

We’re gonna ace it. No doubt in my mind.

If I do, it’ll be because of you, Mom. I know it was hard being a single mother as young as you were.  But you always put me first. Always made sure I had whatever I needed in life. I’m here today because you made so many sacrifices.

Well, you would have figured it out. You would have found a way because this is where you’re supposed to be. You were meant to do. All I did was keep you sheltered. And fed. The tradition continues.

Nurse to pediatrician.

That lady Bessie coming to give you your props? I love when that happens. Witnessing how much your work in the movement has affected and influenced so many people.

I have to admit it made me feel kind of warm and fuzzy.

You deserve all the praise. The work that you did back then, how you literally put your body on a line to affect change.  I used to study those pictures of you with your head held high, marching through ugliness, people spitting and jeering. Throwing things?

Fun times.

I know passive resistance has always been your thing, but I don’t know how you just didn’t hulk out sometimes.

Well, it’s not a matter of want. Believe me, there were times when I could have happily lost it. But we were committed to nonviolence as a strategy. You know, like the Dr. Kings and John Lewises that came before us. So, we took whatever they dished out.

And you were the ones who ended up behind bars. I don’t know how you did it.

Sometimes I look back and neither do I.

You are truly amazing. A gift that I am so grateful for.  And I know I haven’t always lived up to your standards, and I’ve disappointed you, but You haven’t lived a perfect life.

None of us has. But you’re a good man, Martin. With a kind and generous heart. I’m proud to call you my grandson. Nothing you’ve ever done has changed that, and nothing ever will.

I wish I could take Nicole’s advice and magically stop thinking about it, but every time I walk past that banquet room, see their wedding prep, and now they’re gonna live here?  Maybe I should move?

Unacceptable! You belong in Fairmont Crest. Your father’s father designed and built the first houses in this community, including our family home where you were born and raised. No Dupree is going to be chased out of Fairmont by a couple of interlopers. This will pass, Dani. Life goes on.  You just need to get through this and you will get through it.

How did I miss it? Where was I? What was I doing? Did you ever suspect the affair?

No, of course not. I was shocked when you told me. More about Hayley than Bill. And I never would have kept that from you. None of us would. The truth is, two expert liars came together and fooled us all.  As a family, we let our guard down. But that is never going to happen again, so fair warning. Be mindful of who you try to bring into our circle.

You mean another man? I don’t have time for that. Now, I will be putting all of my effort and energy into making Bill and Hayley pay.

Um, you have a visitor. An unexpected one, I’m guessing.

Hey, Nicole. I’m hoping you have a minute.

I envy you, Ashley. I wish I had half your drive and determination. I don’t even know what I want to do with my life.

You’re already doing it. Hairstyling is a profession.

I keep telling her. An important one. Your skill will always be needed, Eva. Especially in the black community.

And white women need hairstylists, too.

You got all the bases covered.

Thanks. But I just feel so low key compared to what Ashley’s doing.

Don’t compare yourself to me. Or to anyone else. You do Eva and you’ll be just fine.

I just wanted you to know I stand in total awe.

It’s just building blocks. One thing follows another in a logical progression.

That philosophy is working for you. Professionally and personally. And from what I’ve seen, you and Derek seem to be solid.

Very much so. Things are falling into place across the board. It’s so odd.

We should let you get back to work.

Thanks for stopping by. And for lunch.

Of course. Bye.

Alright, I gotta get back to work.

Excuse me, ladies.

This time next week, I’ll be in Maui with my honey. Or is it on Maui?

I think it’s on. Either way, I’ve never been. It looks really beautiful.

And it’s supposed to be uber romantic. I think Dave is gonna propose.

I hope you’re planning to say no.

Why would you say that?

You have your whole life to be married.  Enjoy being young and free while you still can. Besides, you ain’t seen that boy before a minute. What’s the rush? He putting pressure on you?

No. Just getting swept up in the thought of tropical magic, I guess.  Mind if I get in your business a little?

Open book.

Do you ever regret not getting married and having kids?

No. Not even for a second. That’s why I know what I’m talking about. Marriage is not for everyone. It might be for you, but it might not. That’s just my two cents. Do what works for you.

I always value your insight.

But I don’t want to overstep. I mean, you are grown.

True, but I still could be like that daughter you never had.

Are you seriously in my house with what, cookies?

Baked them last night for the office, so they were in the car. Thought I’d be neighborly and bring you some. Everybody likes chocolate chip, right?

I do not have time for whatever this is.

Wait, please, Nicole, I swear I won’t keep you long. Just hear me out.  I’m not going to pretend that scene at the country club wasn’t utterly mortifying. But I’m willing to forget that your sister physically assaulted me in front of witnesses in the interest of peace. Starting here. With you and me.

Your point?

I was hoping that you would help me assimilate here in Fairmont Crest.  Oh, come on, Nicole, please. It’s me, you know, Hayley. I used to like me. Your whole family did.

You have made some serious miscalculations here. Dani is my sister. My loyalties will always lie with her. And my sister has been devastated by you and Bill’s double betrayal because that is exactly what it was. You used your friendship with Dani’s daughter to steal Dani’s husband.

I get that’s the party line, but it’s just not true. Friendship with Naomi was real, but so is my love for Bill. I, I didn’t plan that. It just happened.

Please.

I’m not a horrible person, Nicole. I didn’t set out to hurt Dani or Naomi or anyone. I just fell in love with an inconvenient man.

And now you have to deal with the inconvenient consequences. You see how that works?

Look, I’m not naive. I know serious damage was done and I don’t expect your family or this community to just open its arms to me right away. But, your support would go a long way. And Let’s face it, I’m here. Bill and I are going to be living behind the gates. Is acceptance of my presence out of the question?

Ultimately, that’s Dani’s decision. She’s the injured party and a beloved member of the community. Everyone will follow her lead.

Well, I’m not optimistic on that front. I’ve tried apologizing to Dani, but she just can’t get past her anger.

Look closer, Haley. That’s hurt. Please take your cookies and go.

Ashley! Welcome to Garland. Have a great first day.

Thank you.

Ashley Morgan?

Yes, hi.

Shanice Johnson. I’m your preceptor.

That means I’m —

I know. My trainer.

Oh, off to a decent start. Well, I’ve been assigned to teach you the many things you don’t know. And everything is very important, so pay close attention at all times.

Yes, ma’am.

And don’t call me ma’am. That’s my grandmother.

Sorry.

Great, we’ll start with rounds. You’ll shadow me, take notes, lots of them. You’ll hear words that sound like a foreign language because they are. Ask about what you don’t understand. You’re as green as collards and we all know it, so don’t stand in your pride. Lives are in the balance. And if you start to feel scared or overwhelmed, just say something to me or one of the other nurses.  We support each other. Got it?

Got it.

Great, let’s get going.

Nurse to the fifth floor, loud.

Such a beautiful family and Bill trashes it. Anita’s instincts were spot on with him. She knew to keep him at an emotional distance. Me, on the other hand, I wanted to give him the benefit of a doubt.

Why wouldn’t you? He was your son in law. And Dani loved him.

That’s why I, I helped him when he was starting up his practice. He didn’t know anyone. I was the one with the celebrity connections. That celebrity’s been getting in trouble since the beginning of time, so I started sending him clients. His firm took off, and so did Bill’s ego.  It was like he was biding his time until he could slither into his real skin.

And that’s the guy I’ve known all my life. Bill. The control freak. The narcissist. Turning every opportunity to his own advantage. I’m sorry Dani’s hurting. But I’m happy to see the back end of Bill Hamilton. He’s been privy to what goes on in this family long enough.

Hey.

Hey.

You won’t believe the morning I’ve had.

What’s wrong with your cheek? It’s all red.

Yeah, an encounter with Dani’s fist.

What? Are you serious? She hit you?

Yeah.

Oh, hell no. This is unacceptable.

Nope. Just let it go.

I most certainly will not. I’m not gonna stand for Dani attacking you. That’s outrageous.

This is my battle. You running to my rescue just makes me look weak. I toughed it out. Took a table, had a bagel with my head held high. Maybe gained a little respect. And I’ll keep trying. Now, as far as Dani goes, She needed a win. Let her have it.

Someone needs to reign that woman in.

Okay, well that person isn’t you.

I mean it, Bill. Leave it alone.

You’re a lot more forgiving than I am. Well, if that’s how you want it.

Nothing’s working the way that I wanted it. This was supposed to be a great morning. Getting the keys to our brand new home. Instead, I got smacked down at every turn. First, by Vanessa, who couldn’t wait to tell me how I’ll always be an outcast in Fairmont.  Then, Dani went all Mike Tyson on me in front of God and everyone. When I tried to appeal to Nicole, she basically told me never to darken her doorstep again.

Babe, you went to Dani’s sister.

I know, I know, an impulse that I shouldn’t have followed, but Nicole’s a shrink. I thought she could be objective.  I thought if I asked nicely and brought some cookies, maybe she’d consider mediating.

I’m guessing it didn’t go well?

No. She sent me and my cookies packing. You know, I’ve been thinking. Maybe we should cancel the country club in Elope. Go to Vegas or, I don’t know, you pick a place. Anywhere but here.

Surprised to hear you say that.

It’s just gonna be humiliating. Well, the only people who show up to our wedding are from the firm. You know, your old family, who you were with for decades, have shut you out. And I have no one, except Caroline, and she’s on payroll. It’s not exactly the wedding day that a girl dreams of.

Look, I’m, I’m gonna cancel, so be prepared for major fees.

Yeah, I, I don’t care about that.

Hey, hey, do you still want to get married at the country club?

Of course I do, it’s my dream, but it’s so

No, no babe, no buts. I think this is a situation where a reasonable man can agree.

Yeah. Let me do what I do, babe. Let me fix this.

Look, the spirit is definitely willing, but right now this isn’t an option. I’m gonna need some time to figure out a way. But I’m not shutting the door. Not even close. And thank you for checking. Oh, I gotta go.

Hey, husband.

Hey, husband.

Until I saw you, you’d become a nurse. What about the rest of your life?

Still seeing that firefighter who stole you away?

There was no stealing involved. You and I were never a thing.

Yeah, but I was working on it.

A little too subtly, it seems. Are you ever not actively flirting?

No. Not when it comes to you.  It’s good to see you, Ashley.

You too, Andre.

You know he’s a player, right?

What? Oh, Andre. It’s not like that between us. We’re just friends.

Keep it that way. That man is fine as the day is long, but you don’t want to give up on your just as fine firefighter to be another notch on Andre Richardson’s boat?

Wow. You know about Derek? How well informed of you.

Everybody needs a hobby. Plus, I like to know who I’m working with.

Okay. Got it.

What the hell?

Mind if I come in for a minute?

Matter of fact, I do.

You’re no longer welcome in our home.

I won’t take much of your time. And I apologize for not calling first, but I was pretty sure you’d tell me not to come.

You right about that. But you’re here now.  What do you want?

Well, before we get into it, I heard about the regrettable incident at the country club earlier. Not cool on Dani’s part.

If you’re looking for an apology, you’re in the wrong place.

No, no, not necessary. You know, sometimes emotions run high. Especially Dani’s. And Haley, she’s willing to let it slide.  I’m good with that. I would like to ask a favor, though.

Go on.

Well, as you know, Hayley is all alone in the world. Never knew her father, her mother’s gone, she has no siblings. But, like any woman, she wants a real wedding, with real guests. I’d like to give her that. So, I would appreciate it if you used your considerable influence to convince her family to attend the ceremony. Along with anyone else you can gather from the community. A respectable showing is what I’m asking for.

Heh. Do you remember the Dupree women? They want nothing to do with you or Haley. And they certainly wouldn’t be caught anywhere near your wedding.

I’m sure you could persuade them otherwise.

I can’t help you, Bill.  You wasted your time coming here today.

Oh, sorry to hear that. Thought it was worth a try. Oh, and one more thing to consider before you shut the door completely. There were a number of times I came through when you, or a member of your family, needed a favor. I’m asking for the same consideration. It’s just one night.  It’ll mean a lot to me. Just think about it. And whatever you decide, I appreciate being heard. Have a nice rest of your day.

You’ve been awfully quiet since we left the hospital. You okay?

I will be.

Finally, just hold on to that. Don’t let the little stuff distract you. You don’t have to do this, you know. I’ll find another way that doesn’t involve you.

But I am involved. And I’m good to go. Just don’t want to put you in a situation that makes you uncomfortable.

What makes me uncomfortable is thinking about what you went through all those years ago. You deserved better, Mom. And it’s time for you to have it. So don’t worry about me. I’m all in.

It is nice to have you home early for a change. Come here.

It’s been busier than necessary. It takes hours longer than it should to get anything done in Congress these days.  It’s exhausting.

Mm hmm.

I was grateful not to be in session, though. Got time to spend with Granddad.

That’s good. I know how much you love hanging out with him.

Being with Granddad reminds me who I am. The legacy that I carry. My responsibility, not only to honor him, but to instill respect of that heritage in our own kids.  Adopting Samantha and Tyrell was the best decision we ever made. Aside from getting married, of course.

Oh, they were so young when we brought them home. Now they’re teenagers. How did that even happen?

How did, uh, Tyrell do on his calculus test?

He passed.

Are we gonna pretend that’s good enough?

I think it was the best he could do.  At least for right now.

Something going on I should know about?

Tyrell seems to be going through something. He’s been a little standoffish and internal lately, but he told me that nothing’s wrong.

Okay, I’ll talk to him. But I was secretive and moody at 17 too.

Unlike moi, who was a perfectly delightful teenager.

Speaking of delightful, we need to decide if we’re going to allow Samantha to date.

Well, she is 16, and all of her friends are doing it.

So, you’re okay with it?

I think it’s better to give her permission and to know who she’s seeing than to have her sneaking around.

Is it bad if I insist on tagging along?

Hmm.

I was just with Dani.

And I was with Bill.

Bill? Where?

Here. Walked in the door like he still belongs. We’ve got a problem, Anita.

This office has a certain warmth that really speaks to who you are. Both as a woman and as a professional. It’s really easy to see how your patients will feel safe here, and I want to capture that.

Sounds good.

Oh, and I would also like to take a look at your private practice, Uncle Ted. If I remember correctly, those grounds were quite beautiful, so.

You’re more than welcome to. Just head on over there right now. Kat’s working, so she can walk you around.

Okay, uh, perfect. Be right back.

She reminds me so much of my brother. May he rest in peace. Bittersweet, isn’t it? Like so many things, this journey isn’t always going to be easy. Life can be challenging at times. But I’m grateful every day that I’m walking through this life with you.

Smitty: You know, you didn’t even have to say you were exhausted. I can always tell. That’s when the dreams come back, right?

Martin: Don’t start.

Smitty: I’m just saying.

Martin: And I’m telling you, I don’t remember my dreams. And could you please stop trying to hold me accountable for what happens in my sleep?

Smitty: You don’t have to get defensive.  I am just trying to understand what’s going on in there. Maybe there’s something I can help you work through.

Martin: Let’s just call it an overactive imagination combined with exhaustion and leave it at that. So where are the kids? And what’s for dinner?

Anita: What kind of feeling did you get from Bill? Any sense of something he wasn’t saying?

Vernon: He mentioned favors rendered in the past. Not in a threatening way. And he wasn’t specific. Seemed sincere. Concerned for the woman he loves. Humble, even.

Anita: Bill Hamilton? Humble? That’s a red flag in itself. You didn’t get a sense of anything underlying?

Vernon: Not that you could point to in a word or demeanor. What we’re talking about, Bill, is He’s proven he can’t be trusted. And that he’ll use what he knows to get what he wants. I hate giving in to that man about anything. But we can’t take the risk. Protecting Martin is our priority. Agreed?

Anita: Agreed.

Uh, excuse me. Dani, what are you doing? You can’t go in there.

What is she doing here?

Dani: You sorry son of a bitch.

Beyond The Gates Updates

Update written by Suzanne

In Nicole’s office at the hospital, her young assistant, Laura, asks if she’s picked a recipient winner yet for the Dupree Heritage Foundation Scholarship. Nicole hasn’t yet. She’s having a hard time deciding between all of the wonderful young people. Her other assistant, Mona, who’s older, asks her to choose a menu for the upcoming Lynx brunch. Nicole asks her to email them to her, so she can decide later. Her husband, Ted, comes in and compliments her on her beauty and youthful good looks.

Martin and Vernon discuss Dani punching Hayley. Vernon thinks that physical violence is never the answer, but he understands how Dani feels. He can’t understand how Bill can treat her so badly in their divorce. Martin notes that Bill isn’t a decent man, which Hayley will no doubt find out.

Hayley and Bill chat briefly on the phone. She tells him that it’s “been a morning.”

At home, Dani watches photos of her and Bill on a slideshow. Anita walks in and wonders what she’s doing. Dani is remembering the good times she had with Bill She doesn’t understand how he could just throw their life away. Anita sits down near her. Dani hugs her mom and cries on her shoulder.

Vernon wonders whether everything is okay with Martin because he mentioned wanting more. Martin replies that his homelife is solid. He’s just wondering what his next challenge will be. Vernon promises to help him, and Martin mentions that Vernon has already done so much for him. He owes him everything.

Dani pulls away from her mom, saying that she doesn’t want to cry because it makes her weak. She expects that Anita is going to give her a hard time for punching Hayley. Anita tells her that she wasn’t thrilled about her display of temper. Dani rants some more about Hayley’s betrayal; she says that it felt good to punch her. Anita assures her that she’s human and that sometimes folks deserve a sucker punch. She worries that Dani will make it a habit. Dani confides that she thought she was okay when they signed the divorce papers, but Bill and Hayley having their wedding at the country club and then moving in to Fairmont Crest made her angry all over again. Anita lets her know that she didn’t do anything to deserve this treatment. She urges Dani to let go of her anger, or it will eat her alive. She reminds her that she’s a Dupree, so she needs to find her inner strength and not let the losers get the best of her.

Nicole tells Ted that Bill bought the house on Marigold, so Dani went ballistic. She fills him in on the punch. She sighs that she tries to be the voice of reason with Dani, but she’s angry at Bill and Hayley herself. Ted is sympathetic. They hope Dani can move on. Ted has to get to the hospital, so she asks him if he can come by for the video bio for their awards ceremony that Andre is filming. He replies that he’ll try to be there. She reminds him that he’s Andre’s favorite uncle. He suggests that they plan a family gathering while Andre is in town, so she agrees. He kisses her neck, saying she smells good. She chuckles and sends him off.

Nurse Ashley’s mom, Jan, shows up to bring her a healthy lunch at work. Leslie and her daughter, Eva, are also there with Jan. They’re very supportive of Ashley’s new career. Eva wishes she had done something more with her life than be a hairdresser. They all assure her that there’s nothing with that, and that women always needs their hair done. Ashley thanks Jan for being such a great single mom to her and sacrificing for her. They hug.

Martin and Vernon discuss the woman in the diner yesterday that was grateful to Vernon’s years of service as senator and civil rights champion, and who also appreciated Martin. Martin compliments Vernon and how much he admires him. He remembers watching him when he was young, demonstrating, and how he was committed to non-violence, even though he was behind bars sometimes. Vernon reminds him that he was just one of so many, like Dr. King and John Louis before him. Martin worries that he hasn’t always lived up to his grandfather’s standards, but Vernon is proud of him.

Dani, still with Anita, looks at Bill and Hayley’s wedding invitation. She wishes she could stop thinking about them, like Nicole suggested, but she gets upset every time she sees their wedding preparations, etc. She wonders if she should move. Anita tells her that would be unacceptable because she belongs there. She reminds Dani that her grandfather designed and built Fairmont Crest, and she’s not going to be chased out by these interlopers. She promises that this will all pass. She just needs to get through it. Dani doesn’t know how she could have been so blind about Bill and asks her mom if she ever suspected Bill was cheating on her with Hayley. Anita lets her know that she had no clue and reminds Dani that Bill and Hayler are expert liars. Dani tells her that she plans to put all of her time and energy into making them pay. Anita looks worried.

Hayley drops by to see Nicole, who’s not happy to see her.

Back at the hospital, Eva tells Ashley that she envies her job and her relationship with hot firefighter Derek. Ashley assures her that this was all careful planning, and things are working out the way they should. She hugs her mom. Jan, Leslie, and Eva go to the elevator. Ted walks out as Leslie watches him carefully, like she knows him.

Nicole’s two assistants chat. Laura is going to Maui with her boyfriend, David, and hopes he might propose. Mona suggests that she enjoy being young and free. She points out that she hasn’t known him very long. Laura agrees and asks if Mona ever regretted not getting married or having kids. Mona replies, “No, not even for a second.” She shares that marriage is not for everyone. Laura is happy to get advice from her and says she can be like the daughter she never had. Mona gives her a strange look.

Nicole can’t believe that Hayley is there. Hayley brought her some homemade cookies. She admits that Dani’s assault at the country club was mortifying. She’s willing to forget what she did, for the sake of peace. She wants Nicole to help her assimilate into the community because she used to like Hayley. Nicole is shocked that Hayley would think she would side with her over her sister. Her loyalties always lie with Dani, especially after the double-betrayal of her and Bill. She knows that Hayley used her friendship with Naomi to steal Bill. Hayley swears that she didn’t plan to fall in love or hurt anyone. She says that she “fell in love with an inconvenient man.” Nicole replies that she’s going to have to deal with the consequences. Hayley seems oblivious to what Nicole’s saying. She goes on to declare that the damage is already done, but her support could help her. She hopes that Dani will decide to accept her. She tried apologizing already, she pouts, but Dani can’t get past her anger. Nicole tells her that Dani is hurt. She tells Hayley to take her cookies and go.

At the hospital, Nicole welcomes Ashley to the hospital. Ashley meets Shanice Johnson, her preceptor AKA her trainer. They shake hands. Shanice is impressed that Ashley knew what a preceptor is. She says that she’ll be teaching her many things, to take notes, ask questions and ask for help. Ashley follows her.

Vernon rants more to Martin about how Bill has trashed his family. He states that Anita had the right instincts about Bill. She kept him at a distance, whereas he gave him the benefit of the doubt because Dani loved him. He helped him with his practice and shared his connections with celebrities. Martin talks about Bill’s ego and how he’s a control freak and narcissist. Vernon is happy to see the end of Bill and his connection to their family.

Hayley goes to Bill’s office. He notices that her cheek is red, so she tells him that’s from Dani’s fist. Shocked and angry, he takes out his phone, but she tells him to let it go. It’s her battle, not his. She recovered from the slap with her head held high. Dani needed the win, she says graciously. He agrees, reluctantly. She pouts about her morning, which she thought would be great, since she was picking up the keys to their new home. First Vanessa gave her an earful, then Dani, and then Nicole. He can’t believe that she went to see Nicole. She thought that Nicole, being a psychologist, would be more objective. He guesses that didn’t go well. She tells him that Nicole sent her and her cookies packing. She wonders if they should elope or go to Vegas rather than have their wedding at the country club. He asks if she wants to have it there, and she does, but she doesn’t want it to be just work friends and people he knows. He thinks he can fix it.

At home, Dani gets dressed to the nines in a beautiful blue dress. She looks at the photo of her and Bill, which is cracked. She takes a shot for courage and then does her makeup.

Martin’s husband, Dani, Smitty, is on the phone with someone as he carries a basket of laundry down some stairs. He tells the person on the line that he has to make a decision. He thanks them for checking. Martin comes home, and they hug.

Andre flirts with Ashley again at the hospital. He asks if she’s still with the firefighter who stole her away. She chuckles that they were never together and makes fun of him for flirting. He takes some photos of her before he leaves, which she doesn’t see. Shanice warns Ashley against Andre, saying she doesn’t want to end up as another notch on his belt.

Vernon answers the doorbell at home when it rings. He sees Bill and tells him that he’s not welcome. Bill says amiably that he heard about the incident at the country club. He thinks this was “not cool” of Dani. Vernon asks him impatiently what he wants. Bill wants a favor from him – he wants Hayley to have guests at her wedding. He knows that Vernon can get his family and others to attend. Vernon tells him that the Dupree women want nothing to do with him or the wedding, so he can’t help him. Bill reminds him that he’s done many favors for him and his family when they needed help. Vernon glares at him as he leaves.

Eva and her mom, Leslie, are at home, plotting something. Leslie offers to do this thing without Eva being involved. Eva tells her that she’s already involved and they need to do this. She insists that Leslie deserves better.

Martin’s husband, Smitty, massages his shoulders on the couch. Martin is frustrated about how long things take in Congress. He tells him that he’s enjoyed spending time with his granddad. It reminds him of his legacy. He mentions that they adopted Samantha and Tyrell. Smitty can’t believe they’re teens already. He tells Martin that Tyrell passed his calculus test. Martin wonders if that is good enough. Smitty thinks that’s the best he can do right now. That makes Martin wonder what’s going on, so Smitty informs him that Tyrell is going through something right now… He’s been more standoffish and quiet. Martin also asks him if they should allow Samantha, who’s 16, to date. Smitty thinks that giving their permission is better than her sneaking around. Martin suggests half-jokingly that he tag along.

Vernon greets Anita when she returns home. He tells her that they have a problem.

Ted and Nicole are in her office. Andre arrives and compliments the warmth of her office. He wants to capture it on film. He also likes Ted’s practice, which has nice grounds. After Andre leaves, Ted says wistfully that Andre reminds him so much of his late brother. He’s also very glad to be with her.

Vernon fills Anita in on what Bill said. They agree that they have to protect Martin as they clasp hands.

Dani marches into Bill’s office, ignoring the receptionists that try to stop her. She grabs one of his golf clubs, sweeps everything off his desk with it, and then waves it at him threateningly. (The other people in the office scurry out of the way as she does this) She calls him a sorry S.O.B.

Daytime Soap Opera Short Recaps

Recap written by Michele & Cheryl

Dani and Andre were together in bed. She agreed with Andre that their night felt like a dream. Their night had to stay a dream. She didn’t regret being with him, but she’s not ready to get involved with anyone right now. Andre was fine with keeping things casual between them. He reminded her that she had options if she got lonely. Andre thought she should let her neighbors see him leaving her house. It would prove to everyone that she was over Bill. Dani had a problem with that plan. She wasn’t over Bill. Later, Dani went to see Bill to beg him not to go through with the wedding. She wanted him to come home to her. Dani thought they could be a stronger couple than they were before. It couldn’t happen if he went through with that farce of a wedding. Bill seemed to contemplate her offer. He let her know that she was his everything. They talked about what it was like when they first met each other. Bill remembered how beautiful she was when they met. The memory makes what happened harder. It was hard to watch how desperate she’s become. He wondered what happened to the woman he fell in love with. Dani was hurt by his comments. He was the reason she’s acting that way. Bill advised her to be the bigger person and forgive Hayley. Dani didn’t want to hear what he had to say anymore. Andre went to Garland Memorial Hospital and asked Kat for information about Ashley. Ted and Nicole talked about Andre falling for Ashley. Nicole didn’t think he would feel that way about her for long. Andre always falls in and out of love with women.

Dani went home and grabbed a box out of her bedroom. Andre completed a photo shoot which made Ted and Nicole reminisce about when they met. Ted told Nicole that no other woman touched his heart since he met her. Later, Andre caught up with Ashley. He wanted to walk her to her car. They got trapped in the elevator with a pregnant patient who went into labor. Everyone arrived at Bill and Hayley’s wedding. The guests were dressed in black. Bill wasn’t happy about the guests dressing for a funeral. Vernon warned him that he was burying his influence on his family. It’s the last favor Bill’s going to get from them. After talking to Vernon, Bill tried to apologize to Dani for the way he talked to her earlier, but she wasn’t ready to forgive him. She hoped that her presence at the wedding was a bad omen for his marriage. Dani threw a drink in his face. Nicole wondered if Dani was still in love with Bill or just didn’t want to be alone. Dani was upset and almost forgot about that for a minute. She wanted to get her revenge on Bill. Dani refused to stop going after him until he suffered completely. Eva arrived home with news for Leslie. It turns out Leslie is Eva’s surrogate mother. Eva’s mother died when she was younger. Leslie was the only mother she’s ever known. Eva got the job working for Nicole. Nicole didn’t know they existed. Leslie waited for that day to come. She thought that Eva would get to live in her father’s house. According to Leslie, Ted is Eva’s biological father. Bill and Hayley’s wedding began. The crowd wasn’t happy to see them getting married. Once the minister asked if anyone objected to Bill and Hayley getting married, Dani made her move. Dani announced that she objected to them getting married. She pulled out a gun and pointed it at Bill and Hayley. The guests screamed while Dani fired the gun.
