I can’t believe you’re having a muffin. You should know by now I take muffins very seriously. I thought you’d be full. What? After all the stuffed French toast she made for breakfast this morning? It was that or the cheesecake you had flown in. Well, I am saving that for you. Well, maybe if you behave yourself, I’ll share. Oh.
That’s Connor.
Oh. He wants to stay late after school today. And try out for the baseball team. What– what are you gonna say? You know I’m gonna tell him that we’re proud of him and he should go for it– Hold on, hold on a second. Can we just talk about this? Connor’s never played organized baseball before. Chelsea, this is huge. I mean, it wasn’t that long ago that Connor wouldn’t even attempt something new like this. I know, but it’s a lot. Baseball players are notoriously… What? What? Superstitious? Ritualistic. They need to do certain things a certain amount of time before they step up to the plate or throw that pitch. You think I’m being crazy? No. No, I think that you’re being loving and caring.
[sighs]
I think you’re being a mom. I mean, I never would have thought about it, but you’re right. Baseball for someone that has OCD could turn out to be a nightmare. [sighs] He really wants to do it. What do we say? “I know you’re probably worried, “this being a new thing and all, “and the fact that baseball can create some OCD tendencies…” “…but if every time I step up to the plate, I promise not to spit and grab my–” Okay, okay. “But can you trust that I’ll use my tools “to help my anxiety? I really want to do this.” Oh. It’s hard to say no to. “And there’s a cute girl that plays in the right field. I need an excuse to be around her.” Oh, my gosh, no. It’s really hard to say no. [sighs] What are you saying? I’m going to tell him to go for it. Are you talking about baseball or are you talking about the cute outfielder?
[puts down phone]
Both. [puts down phone]
Some kid we raise there.
Yeah. With Connor, we hit a home run. DIANE: Thank you. [indistinct chattering] Oh, good morning, Jack. Good morning, Nikki. Nikki, Victor. It’s nice to see you. VICTOR: How do you do? Mm, looks like you’re recovering well from being shot. Strong as a mule. So why don’t you two enjoy your breakfast? Are you staying at the club? Actually, we’re doing a little redecorating at the Abbott house. VICTOR: Really? Were you inspired by the renovation of the Newman Ranch? Uh, well, you have excellent taste, Jack. No, truth is, this project, I have put all my faith in my wife. Well, I’m sure you have some input. Oh, no, no, no, Jack has given me carte blanche. Well, you enjoy your morning. Jack, if you don’t mind… you and I have a word? You want to talk to me? Well, let me guess. You wanted to know where I acquired my stylish new suit. I’d be happy to have my assistant connect you with my tailor. How did you guess? How kind of you. My goodness. Let me ask you something. What delusion inspired you to encourage your idiot brother to compete with Newman Media? Do you think Connor has a shot with this girl on the baseball team? Well, he does have my good looks. And my charming personality. Kind of like his chances.
Hey.
Billy, hi. Sorry to interrupt. No, not at all. We’ve just got some good news. Connor is trying out for his school baseball team. Oh, yeah, that’s– That’s wonderful news. Remember when we took him to the Brewers game?
Of course.
Yeah. He had a good feel for it. He’s already great at hockey and soccer, so I’m sure he’ll pick it up pretty quickly. If it’s okay with you and Connor, of course, I can see if Johnny and Katie want to get together and go to the batting cages over the weekend, maybe? Oh, I think he’d appreciate that. I’d do anything for the kid. How’s he doing otherwise? He’s good. He’s loving living at the ranch. BILLY: Mm-hm. It’s great. I got a busy day, I’ll see you soon. Hey, before you start that busy day, can I ask you something? Sure, Adam, what is it? Is today the day you officially launch your attack on me and Newman Media? I’m curious where you’re getting your information. You know me long enough, Jack, to be informed about the fact that I know everything that goes on in the corporate business world. And you’ll cross any and all lines, ethically and legally, to do just that? Oh, please, Diane. You’re hardly one to give a lecture on ethics. All right, then I’ll just say this, Victor, after taking a bullet for your family, maybe you should focus on healing instead of taking shots at our family. Now, why in the world would I miss the spectacle of Billy boy going down in flames while squandering Jack’s money? Oh, thank you for your concern about our finances. I think we’ll be okay. Why did you allow Billy Boy Abbott to call it Abbott Communications? You damn well know that will ensure the company going down in flames and adding another stain to John Abbott’s great reputation. Sorry, Adam, but I– I think you’ve been the victim of misinformation. Oh, no, my sources are very reliable. Starting a media company, one that’s in direct competition with mine. It’s just like you, isn’t it? To think everything in life is a competition. Well, there’s no contest here. Everyone knows that Newman is the undisputed leader in the media space. So any challenge that you try to mount against it is doomed to end in failure. Do you both really need to do this now? I mean, you could’ve talked Jack into bankrolling any type of business, but somehow you just had to stake your claim in media. You honestly think this is about you? Damn right I do. It’s about me, and it’s about my father and how your hatred for us, it drives everything that you do. I used to think that way, you’re right. But I don’t anymore. I’ve moved on. I’m sure you have. Actually, Adam, my company’s gonna be the antithesis of Newman Media. Right. It’s called Abbott Communications, not Newman. It’s really original. But with your name on it, it’s doomed to fail. We’re gonna act responsible because we believe the truth matters. We will be the relevant source of accurate information, unlike the blunt force object you and your father have turned Newman Media into to simply bludgeon your enemies into submission. A blunt force object? Is that part of the purple prose that you will be using? Now you’re still licking your wounds over our fair and balanced coverage of your corporate mismanagement and malfeasance. You know, the truth does matter, Billy, and sometimes the truth, it hurts. Well, I agree with you. Truth is, I’m proud of what I did at that company up until the point that your father took advantage of my mother’s poor health and stole that company away from me. Yeah, you claim that you’re starting a more honest and unbiased enterprise, but you just made it clear you’re all about the spin. It’s just poor Billy Abbott. He’s a victim of everyone else’s ill intentions. No, I’m not a victim. Not anymore. And I’m done being reactive, Adam. I’m gonna take this opportunity and actually try to improve people’s lives. Unlike you, I’m gonna use my privilege for good in this world. Right. Well, haters gonna hate, huh? I found my voice, and it’s an optimistic one. And I can’t imagine a better person to help you put aside your larger-than-life insecurities and your petty grievances to make the world a better place than Phyllis Summers. I mean, she’s the first person that comes to mind when I think of the power of positivity. Seriously, Victor, trying to get a rise out of Jack by invoking John Abbott’s good name? That’s low, even by your standards. John Abbott, may he rest in peace, would not stoop to respond, and neither will I. I will– I will say this, though. I am very proud of my brother’s newest endeavor. So would my father be. As a matter of fact, I wish my father was still alive to see his youngest son make his mark on the world. And I can understand why you and Adam might be a little nervous right now. The only mark your idiot brother will ever leave in this world is to sully the already tainted Abbott name. Well, there you go underestimating people again. Seems to me the last time you did that, you handed Diane Glissade thinking it was a mere shell of itself. And then you learned that Jack burned you at your fire sale of the company’s holdings. And Jack made Glissade whole again. Let me just say I want you to enjoy the victory as long as it lasts. Well, thank you. We will. And I do grow tired of your baseless predictions about the Abbotts family’s doom and gloom ahead. We’re doing just fine. You know, Jack, it’s easy to fix a window dressing of a home, but you’re dealing with cracks in the foundation. The entire house will soon… …lay in ruins. Well, we shouldn’t keep you from your breakfast. Oh, please. Your fake politeness doesn’t hide the fact that you’re as dismissive as your husband. I didn’t see any point in continuing to let the barbs fly, whereas I know that you feed off of anger and vitriol. In the spirit of easing the hostilities between the two of us, can I propose that we make a pact, you and I? Huh? You’re feeling the pressure, huh? You’re taking shots of me now, you’re taking shots of Phyllis. I’m just doing some field reporting, trying to get a quote out of you. You’re trying to get a rise out of me, because that’s the kind of weak journalism that Newman Media is known for. I think you’d want the free publicity. Hatchet jobs, lies, innuendo, that’ all free, is it? Okay, that enough, both of you. She’s right. And I’m not gonna let you drag me into a fight that is, frankly, beneath me. Hm, so you’re going on the record? I can quote your denial that you are gunning for me in Newman Media? Adam, I’m not surprised, given your shortcomings, that you’re very nervous about my impending success, but I will give you this story, okay? Abbott Communications is ready to launch, and sky’s the limit. Well, thank you for the scoop. Although I think that is a story for Newman Publishing. We’ll let them decide if it’s fantasy or fiction. Oh, excuse me. I have a real company to run. Thank you very much. [Chelsea exhales] Sorry about that. No, I’m sorry that you had to sit there through that. I’m sure that’s getting very old. For the record, Chelsea, he started it. So… Are you really starting your own company? I am. And it would have been nice to release that information myself, but that’s how it goes. Any idea how he, uh, learned about this? I’d have to guess Victor. You know how good that man is at finding out information. Hey, um… Adam isn’t right, is he?
Very rarely is he right.
[scoffs] Billy, you know what I’m saying. You don’t plan to use your new company to go after Victor and Adam? I’m being honest with you, Chelsea. I’ve moved on from that. Well, I’m glad to hear it. You? You seem good. I am. You mentioned that Connor’s enjoying living at the ranch. Mm-hm. How is it being under the same roof with Adam again? I mean, you share an address now. Seems to me you’re sharing a little bit more than that, too. Are you high on pills again? Victor, what on earth? I mean, why the hell would I sign any pact with you or anyone in your family? Because you care about your family. Look, you love your granddaughter. I love my son. Why don’t you and I agree right here and now to keep Kyle and Claire out of our battles? It would be the right thing to do. Well, I hate to say it, and I probably never will again, but I agree with Diane. Well, I disagree. I do not want my granddaughter to give any part of her heart to your son. But, Victor, that would be Claire’s choice. You’re asking me to stop protecting my family that I love? Ain’t gonna happen. Then, sadly, I can predict your family’s future. Neither Claire nor Kyle will pay any attention to your bluster. You will drive Claire away, just as you have all of your children with your constant disapproval of their choices. Do I need to remind you that no relationship between a Newman and an Abbott has ever lasted? I do not want my granddaughter to be involved with your son. It’s gonna end in heartache.
JACK: Thank you.
Yeah, thanks. Look, I know what Victor said upset you, but I’m really proud of you for taking the high road and sticking up for Kyle and Claire. Right now, I’m a lot less concerned about our son than I am about Billy. Well, we shouldn’t be too surprised that Victor found out about Abbott Communications or that you’re the chief investor. All conversations were internal. We have not done a press release. Yeah, but we both know leaks happen. Maybe– maybe Billy said something to Victoria or to their kids and it got back to Victor. JACK: I’m telling you he is more tight-lipped than that. He knows better than to show his hand. But Phyllis is a wild card. Maybe she blabbed to Nick. Uh, Phyllis is a concern. Yeah, I can just see her walking around, bragging about her new position over inflating her role and its importance to anyone who will listen. Perhaps, but we haven’t seen her in town lately. No, we haven’t. Not that I’m complaining. Well, I told Victor to respect Kyle and Claire’s choices. I guess I have to respect Billy’s. And no, I wouldn’t have chosen Phyllis for this particular battle. We both know Victor is going to pull no punches. You just can’t pass up any chance to take jabs at Jack or his family. Now, darling, you just told us that you now realize how short life is. So why can’t you just let it go? Sweetheart, Billy Boy Abbott is making a run at one of my companies. Do you think I’m gonna let that go? And you are sure that he will fail, so why waste a second worrying about it? Am I worried? I have full confidence that Adam will win if it comes to competition between him and Billy Boy Abbott. I promise you. Adam and I were just sharing our excitement over Connor’s news, as I told you. Well, that’s good, you seem pleased. What is that supposed to mean? When I walked in, it looked like you two were holding hands. I guess that’s none of my business, is it? No, no, actually, it’s– it’s not. I crossed the line. [sighs] I know you warned me about moving in with Adam, and it did take me some time to get comfortable– You being comfortable with Adam, is that really about Connor or is that about you two reconnecting? Why are you asking me this, Billy? Because despite what happened to us, Chelsea, I still care about you. And I don’t want you to get hurt. And that is what Adam does to people he cares about. Are we talking about Sally now? Sally, yes– Well, you certainly helped her heal. If you’re implying that it’s a rebound, that’s– that’s not what this is. I am not implying anything. I’m just observing. The same way you observed Adam and me bonding over Connor’s progress. Okay, well… We’re good together. And we’re having fun. Good. Then I’m happy for you. Thank you.
[sighs]
Look, Chelsea, Adam has hurt you in the past, okay? So be careful. Also, what I’m building with Abbott Communications has nothing to do with the Newmans. I want you to know those two things. I know what Adam is capable of, and I can take care of myself. You’re damn right you can’t. But I appreciate that you care. And that you still want to protect me. That’s not gonna change. You don’t have to worry about me. And I made my boundaries very clear with Adam. ADAM: I thought you were leaving. I am. Well, then go. Unless there’s another area of my life you’d like to stick your nose into. Adam, I already told you that I’m not interested in going another round with you. I came here to grab a coffee, and then you attacked me not once, but twice. It’s a disturbing pattern. And how is that? We all know that you put out a hatchet job on me when I was at Chancellor. Now you found out that I’m starting my own media company– I think it’s pretty clear I’m not the one with an axe to grind. Good to see you, Chelsea. Let me know if you want to get the kids together. Will do, thanks. You believe that guy? [Chelsea sighs] Why’d you have to go after him like that, so aggressively? Billy started it. He’s starting a media company. He’s building it from the ground up with the sole purpose of going after the business that I run. When it comes to him, though, you take everything so personally. Okay, well, I left for a minute, and I come back here to hear him grilling you about my personal life. I heard what you told him. About how you wanted to set clear boundaries with me. No, I– That– [sighs] You and I have talked about that. Well, of course we’ve talked about it, because it’s about us, and it has nothing to do with Billy Abbott. It’s none of his business. He should worry about himself and his own issues. He’s a loser, and he always will be. Oh, come on. That’s not fair. Is it really his fault Jill and Victor ripped Chancellor out from under him?
Absolutely.
[sighs] He was failing, and they did what they had to do to save their company. And this Abbott Communications is gonna fail, too. Only this time, he’s not gonna have anybody to bail him out. If you truly feel that way about Billy’s latest business venture, then why are you acting so threatened by it? I guess I’m gonna have to take Billy’s word for it that he’s focused on building something new for the Abbotts and not fighting old fights with the Newmans.
Mm.
So… How’s your work coming at the house? You promised me that you’d be patient, and I seem to recall you agreeing that you would trust me the way Billy trusted Sally. Sally wasn’t redoing his ancestral abode. [laughing] I see you’re using humor to mask your anxiety. I– I don’t want to dampen your enthusiasm for this particular project– DIANE: Jack, I understand. Victor hit a nerve when he talked about your father. And you want to do right by his memory, not just at work, but at home. But, hey, I promise you, this is going to be a positive thing for our family. Sweetheart, let’s not be naive, okay? Billy Boy’s foray into media is nothing but a pitiful attempt at revenge for losing Chancellor. Possibly. And he can’t even get that right. Took his mother to pull the rug out from under him. Well, to be fair, that occurred because you put so much pressure on Jill. Do you honestly think I wouldn’t take advantage of a bungling company? Well, I can’t argue with that. Billy is gonna do what he’s going to do but I hope Jack knows what he’s doing in investing in him. And with Phyllis above? This is double trouble. [sighs] [clicks tongue] Well, as always, your timing is impeccable. I just finished a meeting with a client. I’d love to see you. Well, I’m totally free. My place or yours? Mine, if you don’t mind, there’s, uh, something I want to run by you as well. What’s going on? Well, Abbott Communications launch has been leaked, and I need to put something out before anyone else has a chance to go negative. And by “anyone” I assume you mean Adam? BILLY: He just confronted me about it, and clearly he knows too much, and I’m not sure from who. So I want to put out a press release before Newman Media has a chance to put out what I’m sure they are planning. I’m on my way. Thank you. I’ll see you soon. [sighs] Phyllis, it’s me. I was hoping you got a new phone so I could actually talk to you, but… clearly that’s not the case. Listen, we have a problem. It’s a problem that could use your take-no-prisoners approach, which is exactly why I brought you on board, right? I just wish I knew where you were. I’m not the only one. Everyone’s wondering where you are. Listen, do me a favor, okay? Call the people that love you. Call the people that you love first and then… call me after that. I wanna know you’re okay. [knocking on door] Come in, it’s open.
Hey…
Jack. Uh, this a bad time? No, no, no, not at all. Always a good time to see my big brother and biggest backer. Look, I won’t stay long. I just wanted to thank you and Sally for hosting Diane and me for cocktails. Yeah, no, of course, it was our pleasure. I also thought you should know I ran into Victor earlier. He knows all about the new company. Yeah, I heard. I ran into Adam. And, of course, he offers his best wishes for my success. I’ll bet. Any idea how the information got out? Do you think it was Phyllis? I don’t know. That’s what I’m trying to figure out right now. I mean, Phyllis said that she told Nick about us joining forces, but she also swore Nick to secrecy. I asked Nick about it. He said he hasn’t told anyone about it. You believe him? I mean, he’s not as cutthroat as his brother or his father, so yeah, I tend to believe him. And I don’t think he would go back on his word to Phyllis. Yeah, I tend to agree. What about Jabot? Did you mention your investment in the company to anyone over there? Of course not. Diane and Kyle know, no one else. Kyle? Did he talk to Claire about it? I highly doubt that, given Victor’s vehement objection to her romantic involvement with Kyle, I don’t think Claire is going to add fuel to any fire between the two families. Besides, the source of this leak is no longer our primary concern. Yeah, no, I agree. We gotta get out in front of it. That’s what I’m working on right now. Just really wish I was able to catch Adam and Newman Media off guard. I thought you weren’t going to make this about the Newmans. I know this war between our families is not one-sided. Jack has admitted as much to me. But, darling, can’t you just take a step back, for me? Sweetheart, it’s not in my nature to back down from a fight. Believe me, I am well aware of that.
Okay.
But you’re still recovering. I’m fine. [sighs] All I’m asking is for you to let somebody else fight this battle. That’s not in my nature either. You know that. Well, Victor, you just said that you have every confidence in Adam, so why don’t you let him take care of Billy? Why would I ever be threatened by a lightweight like Billy Abbott? You’re kinda acting like you are. Okay, as infuriating as I find him, I am not threatened by him starting a media company. I just– I just wish that he could find another industry to fail in. [sighs] He just never knows his limits. He always thinks big and he falls flat. He had his chance to run a multinational conglomerate, and his own mother canned him. So this is really what you want to do? What does that mean? Billy’s made it clear he’s ready to move on from his family’s feud with yours. He’s ready to focus on what’s important. Yet you’re here with me, and your focus is on him. Okay, you’re right. I’m sorry. I don’t want anything to do with Billy, and I want everything to do with you. I’m sorry that… He gets under my skin, but I just– I feel like he uses you to do that. I just think you’re giving yourself a little too much credit. How am I doing that? Well, I spent a lot of time with Billy in the past, and his decisions were rarely influenced by you. So you don’t think that his new company is about me? I really don’t. No. I mean, Billy has a history in media, so is it that crazy that he’d want to work there? The sandbox is big enough for both of you to play in. I just– And if he’s gonna go after anybody, it’s gonna be Victor, because he’s the one that messed everything up for him at Chancellor. He’ll always hate me for what happened between us in Baltimore, okay? That’s why he went after Sally and everything that he’s doing. But is– is that what this is really about? Because Billy’s with Sally now? You said you were over her. Did you mean that? I did. But, you know, it makes me wonder, you’re here defending your ex. I mean, are you over Billy? Hey, listen, that little remark about Adam and Newman Media that just kind of slipped out, you know, old habits die hard. I– I promise you, Abbott Communications has nothing to do with the Newmans. I’m glad to hear that. I assume you’re bringing Phyllis in on this press release? That is totally in her wheelhouse. Oh, I agree, and I would love to. If I could actually get ahold of her. She still hasn’t been in touch? SALLY: Since we’re gonna be fighting a war of words, I brought provisions– Oh, hi, Jack. Hi, Sally. Uh… Billy was just telling me that Phyllis is MIA that is a cause for real concern. Look, you advocated for her involvement, are you sure she’s as committed to you as you are to her? I told you I’m over Billy. And I told you Sally and I are also done. It’s clear Billy and Sally aren’t looking back. And that doesn’t bother you? Adam, what did I just say? I know, it’s just you defend the guy so hard. I defend him to you, I defend you to him. I hate to see the two of you attacking each other.
You still care about the guy.
I do. And that’s not gonna change. And I hope you don’t expect it to. Just like I understand that you still care about Sally. If we’re gonna move forward, we have to stop accusing each other of not moving on. [sighs] Agreed. Look, I don’t want my old business with Billy to distract me from what’s new with us. Well, I mean, about that, I– We’re still figuring things out, you know? It’s not– A done deal. I know. Sorry if you felt like I was pushing. I was just excited about Connor. Our home run. And so was I. Adam… We could really have a chance here. You and me. We just… have to keep our eye on the ball. Are we still… talking about baseball? [chuckles] How about them Brewers? This could be their year. Look, I’m not gonna make a decision about Phyllis until I hear from her and know that she’s okay. I accept that and I hope the same. My reservations are strictly about business. It just seems to me you have some timing issues to consider. Meaning? Meaning if you and Phyllis haven’t gotten things straightened out, I would leave her name off of any initial press release. Yeah. Thank you for that. I’ll take that into consideration. Yeah, I just wish she was here to help. Well, I’m here to pick up any slack. Yes, you are. Thank you for that. Sally, I think you have been a very good influence on my brother. Well, that goes both ways. Well, I will leave you to it. I look forward to that press release. Thanks, Jack. See you soon. SALLY: Bye.
[exhales]
Are you okay? I don’t have the luxury of not being okay. Hmm. The power of positivity. That’s right. All right, let’s see what you got. Okay, but just take it easy on me. That’s a rough draft, okay? It’s hardly that. Too much positivity? I mean, does it make it– make me sound better than I am? This is exactly how I see you. So I think we should just proof it and send it out. As is.
As is?
Mm-hm. You sure about that? I mean, you did forget a few words when you were introducing yourself as the founder of Abbott Communications. You forgot to mention that you are brilliant and dynamic and innovative, And you’re sexy as hell. I am sexy as hell, aren’t I? Mm-hm. I’m definitely positive about that. Sweetheart, Adam can take care of Billy Boy Abbott, but I will not have my children fight my battles for me. I am not asking you to do that. But what concerns me is the pleasure that you seem to take in hurting Jack or any Abbott. So what? What else is new? This is about Claire. I know the relationship with Kyle is new, but she cares for him very deeply and his family. And I know you have plans for Billy, and you probably are plotting against Jack, but surely you can see that if you hurt them, you’ll be hurting Claire. And what will you have me do? Tell me. Well… There was a time that you and Jack found your way to a truce.
[scoffs] So it is possible to end this hostility. Now, just tell me, what would it take to make that happen? Hm. Victor, please, can you put a stop to things before they go too far?
