Nikki: I’m worried about her, too.
Victor: Oh. I can’t say I’m upset that the bastard is dead, but I’m concerned about our daughter’s reaction to it.
Nikki: Well, I just talked with her. She told johnny and katie the news. They’re handling it as well as can be expected.
Victor: That’s good to know.
Nikki: Have you talked to nicholas?
Nikki: Well, he is upset and confused, as well. I mean, he went from believing he had accidentally killed ashland to not having any idea where ashley was. And then he heard about a fatal car crash? He really doesn’t know what to make of it.
Victor: Yeah, well, it’s a lot for him to deal with, but I’m sure he’ll be alright.
Sally: Are you really leaving it up to me to decide if newman media will publish what I’ve learned? Or by asking me what I plan to do, is that your way of sending me a message as my boss to look the other way?
Nick: I swear to you, the decision is yours. I would just like a heads-up about what your intentions are so vick and I can be prepared for whatever is coming. Like I said, I’m very concerned for my sister.
Sally: [ Sighs ] As far as I know, no other news outlet is aware that ashland showed up to victoria’s house and got into it with her and you before he was found dead in his car. So part of me wants to publish it, scoop the competition, and inform the public. But… it might be a little premature at this point.
Chance: So how are you doing with all this news about ashland’s car accident?
Sharon: Well, I was upset when I heard about it. Not that I have any fondness for the man. Quite the opposite. But still, it was a shock. Brought up memories of rey’s death — how ashland wasn’t able to save rey, but he somehow managed to save himself and victoria.
Chance: Yeah. Yeah, I bet that’s tough to process.
Sharon: It is. But I spoke to nick about it, and he’s been a really great comfort to me, though he’s still trying to wrap his head around the whole situation himself.
Chance: Yeah, it was a tough night for everyone involved. So I’m assuming nick told you everything that happened with ashland?
Kevin: Thanks, bud.
Adam: What’s the rush, kevin? Got some hardcore hacking to do?
Kevin: Wouldn’t you like to know. I work for the gcpd. So if you’re looking for someone to blackmail into being your minion, look elsewhere. This guy’s on the right side of the law.
Adam: Yeah, well, at least for now. Old habits, you know, and all that.
Kevin: It’s funny. Now that I’m out of your orbit, everything is right in my world. Great job, great relationship, great family.
Adam: That sounds nice. I’m very happy for you.
Kevin: From what I hear, you’re striking out on all three of those fronts these days.
Adam: Gloating is not a good look on you, kevin.
Kevin: I think I’ve earned it. You put me through hell.
Adam: Come on. You were hardly an innocent victim.
Kevin: The difference between the two of us is that I have done my best to change. You just wallow in your bad habits.
Adam: What would you know about it?
Kevin: Uh, hello? Chloe? The love of my life?
Adam: No accounting for taste, but I guess there really is a lid for every pot, huh?
Kevin: [ Chuckles ] Yeah. My point is that chloe works for sally now. Not that she’s a gossip, but she has shared some things your ex has said about you. Whew!
Adam: Like what?
Kevin: Well, I wish I could stay and chat longer, but I’m assuming you heard ashland locke turned up dead, so I’m a little busy.
Adam: Wait a minute. Hang on a second, kevin. From what I heard, it was a simple open-and-shut case, and now you’re working on it after hours? Seems like there’s more that’s going on than meets the eye.
Jack: Going out?
Ashley: As a matter of fact, I am. Why? Are you keeping tabs on me like you used to when we were kids?
Jack: We’ve got kids who have kids. No, I don’t think so. I’m actually quietly reading over the lab report you asked me to look at.
Ashley: Well, you know what? I should be back at a pretty decent hour, so we can go over it when I get home.
Ashley: Or maybe I should just stay here and keep tabs on you. What are you doing here — again? Coverage, care, get it all.
Diane: I brought something by for harrison.
[ Sighs ] Sorry to disturb you, but I wanted to bring these by tonight.
Jack: That’s okay. Ashley was just leaving.
Diane: Oh, well, don’t let me hold you up.
Ashley: I’m going to be back really soon so we can go over that report together and get it back to the team asap. Real soon.
Diane: [ Sighs ] It sounds like you’re busy, so I won’t take up too much of your time.
Jack: What have you got there?
Diane: Uh, I bought some age-appropriate books about loss and grief for harrison. I know, we will get kyle and summer’s approval first, but I thought these might be of use to our grandson.
Jack: That’s very thoughtful. I know you’re concerned about harrison. We all are.
Diane: Jack, don’t hold back. I know what you’re thinking.
Jack: What’s that?
Diane: [ Sighs ] Something along the lines of what phyllis said to me earlier today, that I might try and swoop in and do everything for harrison, but it won’t make up for the pain that I caused our son when he was a boy. I left you to guide kyle through the most devastating experience of his life and to pick up the pieces after I, you know, faked my death. So I can imagine that you don’t feel like I’ve earned the right to be there for our grandson now.
Sally: As the new head of newman media, it is important to me that whatever I put out into this world is rock solid. And right now, I have more of the story, but I don’t have the whole story. The police haven’t even addressed ashland’s whereabouts prior to his accident. So for now, maybe it’s best that we don’t put any of that in the articles we run on ashland’s death. But once I have all the relevant information, I’m going to do what I have to do.
Nick: I think that’s smart. Not that I’m pressuring you.
Sally: I know.
Nick: I really appreciate you holding off for now. It means a lot, and I will not forget it.
Sally: [ Sighs ]
Sharon: Nick told me that ashland was dead. At that moment, I think he was more concerned about me and my reaction, much like you are now, and I appreciate that. Nick has been a really strong shoulder to comfort me since rey’s death, and I wanted to offer whatever support I could to him, too.
Chance: So you think nick needs support?
Sharon: Well, of course, as does victoria and the entire family. Um, you know what? I just remembered that I put something on in the kitchen right before you walked in, and I need to get back to it. Is there anything else I can get you?
Chance: I’m good. Thank you.
Sharon: Alright, enjoy that coffee.
Chance: I will.
Kevin: Somebody’s dead. So, of course, there’s going to be a proper investigation. These things take time. It’s a bit more complicated than doing a little look-see at the crash site.
Adam: But if it was just a simple car crash, then why the “all hands on deck” approach? I mean, I assume that’s what’s happening, given your involvement, kevin.
Kevin: I’m going to speak slowly so you can grasp the concept. Dead body. Notorious person. Huge public interest. There’s a lot of pressure from up top to cross every “t” correctly as quickly as possible.
Kevin: You know, you would think as someone who’s been arrested numerous times that you would understand how these investigations work. Unfortunately, that’s all the time I have to explain the obvious. You and your party of one, have a lovely night. If you have type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure
Nick: It’s pretty late for you. What happened now?
Victor: [ Sighs ] I just wanted you to know, son, that your mother spoke with victoria, and apparently everyone is holding up well.
Nick: I’m relieved to hear that.
Victor: I also want you to know that your mother’s going to make the official statement on part of our company about the news. What I need to know is if newman media is on the same page. Have you spoken to sally — what’s her name?
Victor: Oh, yeah.
[ Sighs ] I just came from seeing her. Apparently, a source told her that ashland was at victoria’s that night. For the time being, though, she has decided not to use that information in newman media’s coverage.
Victor: Well, maybe she will not prove to be the liability I thought she might.
Sally: [ Sighs ]
Adam: Look, I seriously hope that you are not here because you decided to hunt me down again.
Sally: I’m actually just here to order some takeout, so you don’t have to worry about a repeat performance. My heart won’t be bleeding all over the bar.
Sally: Look, it’s inevitable that we’re going to see each other around town, and I don’t want things to be weird between us every time we cross paths.
Adam: I don’t either. But that’s really up to you.
Sally: Well, it’s a brand-new day. Or night, given the time. After our last conversation, you will be glad to know I realized you were right. We are better off apart.
Adam: Do you mean that?
Sally: I do. Yeah, I can’t keep fighting for a relationship that only one of us wants. Why would I? In the end, the only thing I would get out of it is a loss of self-respect.
Adam: Well, I am relieved that you have finally accepted that it’s over.
Sally: Yeah, well, I realize I was putting far too much energy into us and not enough into me, which isn’t a smart move, given that I have a lot to deal with as the ceo of newman media.
Adam: Oh. Then you didn’t resign.
Sally: I couldn’t bring myself to sacrifice the opportunity of a lifetime. No man is worth that. Not even you.
[ Sighs ]
Jack: I will admit that a few months ago, a few weeks ago, my reaction would have been as you described, that you had no business being in harrison’s inner circle, that you were overstepping, but… well, hearing about the books you just got, my first thought was, “wow, why didn’t I think of that?”
Diane: I think this is a big step forward for us.
Jack: I’m not going to question your feelings for harrison or how quickly you connected with him. The same thing happened to me. But right now, his family has to be there for him. All of us. He’s lost too much, too young.
Diane: I couldn’t agree more. And I can’t tell you how much it means to me to be considered family again, you know, what it means that harrison knows me as his grandmother. Jack, I promise I will never let that child down the way I did kyle. I will be there for both my grandson and my son — always.
Phyllis: Hey, nikki.
Nikki: I guess I beat ashley here, huh?
Phyllis: Hey, you get a lot of points for showing up and your dedication to the cause in light of…ashland’s death.
Nikki: Trust me, none of us are shedding tears over him.
Phyllis: Definitely not. And some people are just better off dead, like diane. Remember how happy we were when we thought she was dead?
Ashley: And once again, we agree on something.
Phyllis: Well, nice for you to show up.
Ashley: Yeah, I was delayed because the viper appeared on my doorstep. She just feels free to pop in whenever she damn well pleases. And she’s using this whole situation with ashland and harrison to just insinuate herself into our lives. I’m sorry. I don’t mean to trivialize what happened with the poor little boy and how it’s affecting your family with ashland and everything.
Nikki: Oh, please, I’m not offended. I’m not surprised that she’s using that to her advantage.
Phyllis: Yeah, I’m sure she’s all but wearing a “best grandma ever” sash across her chest.
Ashley: You don’t understand. I want her gone yesterday.
Phyllis: Good thing nikki and I have come up with a plan. (Vo) it’s yoooopllllaaaitiimmeee!!!
Adam: You made the right call. You know, regardless of our personal situation, I always did think you were the right person for the job.
Sally: Well, I have a confession to make. I had a little help coming to my final decision.
Adam: Let me guess. You brought chloe in, and she had some strong opinions on the subject.
Sally: Yes. Chloe speaks her mind. It’s one of the things I like about her. But it wasn’t only her. Nick made a very strong argument for me to stay. And I’m really glad he did, because now I’m starting to see we’re going to a very positive, productive work dynamic.
Adam: Hm. Well, that was fast. Not that I’m not glad for you, but what led you to that conclusion?
Sally: Thank you. We just had a meeting on how newman media is going to cover ashland locke’s death.
Sally: It’s quite the story, huh? High-profile. It’s very complicated for your family, obviously, but I have a pretty good grip on how I’m going to handle things.
Adam: I bet you do.
Victor: Well, now, this sally spectra is nothing if not ambitious, right? Now that she and adam are no longer an item, I’m sure she has decided to become a team player if she wants to keep her current position.
Nick: I’m not going to speculate about that, but I will tell you, there is a lot more to sally as an executive and a person than you think.
Victor: Oh, yeah? Well, I can hardly wait to find out. So, look, we have a long day. I think it’s time to go home. You must be exhausted.
Nick: Yeah, I’m tired, but, honestly, I’d rather talk, if you don’t mind.
Victor: About what?
Nick: Ashland’s death. You have been dancing around the issue, but I need some concrete answers. Ever since ashland was found in his car, I can’t shake the feeling that I don’t know what took place last night. But I’m certain you do. So I’m asking you one more time to be honest and tell me what happened.
Diane: I’m having so many mixed emotions right now. I… I feel guilty being happy about the progress that I’ve made when it’s such a sad day for so many others.
Jack: Far be it from me to speak ill of the dead, but I think it’s a stretch to think that that many people are going to miss him. After all the horrible things that ashland did, the only person I know that will grieve for him is harrison.
Diane: Well, if that’s true, then it makes ashland’s death even more tragic. To leave behind so little love is just a terrible way to end a life.
Jack: Are you thinking about the legacy you left behind all those years ago?
Diane: Well, I can’t help but compare the situation to my own. You know what? That’s in the past. And unlike ashland, I’ve been given a second chance. And I don’t take one minute of it for granted. I hope you can believe that.
Ashley: Kudos to you ladies for being proactive, but I thought we were supposed to be a team.
Nikki: Well, when you couldn’t make it to the last meeting, phyllis and I put our heads together, and since we are all working for a common cause, you know, if two out of the three of us agree —
Ashley: Gotcha. Majority rules, because we’re a democracy.
Phyllis: Well, it’s better. I mean, if we were a monarchy, we’d all want to be queen, right?
Ashley: That’s true. That’s true. Yeah. Well, listen, I’m open to any and all suggestions, so if it spells success, count me in. What is it?
Nikki: Unfortunately, we have not been able to dig up any dirt on diane when she was living in los angeles.
Phyllis: So we realized that we have to come up with some dirt here.
Ashley: What does that mean?
Phyllis: Well, we’re going to create a situation where diane spectacularly falls. I mean, so bad that kyle is done with her. And when he’s done with her, everybody else will follow suit.
Nikki: She will be forced to leave town in shame.
Phyllis: Mm-hmm. Right.
Ashley: This is a great concept.
Phyllis: And we’re going to center it around her job at marchetti. So we’re going to orchestrate some situation where it’ll look like she was sabotaging the company for her own personal gain.
Nikki: But in order to accomplish that, we need to have somebody on the inside.
Phyllis: That someone is me. It’s great. I mean, summer already offered me a job at marchetti when they were in milan, so I already set up the groundwork. What do you think?
Ashley: It’s a horrible idea. People who come to cricket, stay with cricket!
“The young and the restless”
Jack: Well, you obviously put a lot of thought into choosing these books. I’m impressed. And touched. And I think they’ll help harrison a great deal, and I know summer and kyle will be thankful, as well.
Diane: Let me know if there’s anything else I can do.
Jack: Oh, I think you’ve already gone above and beyond.
Diane: Look, I know I’ve stayed longer than I expected, and you have that report to get back to, so there’s just one more thing before I go. I want to thank you for what you did at the park today, the wayyou shut phyllis down when she was just going off on me.
Jack: There’s no need to get into that again.
Diane: Well, I appreciate that, but I think there’s every need.
Ashley: How could you think that I would sign off on this idea? It could possibly cause marchetti to be jeopardized, especially when it’s under the jabot umbrella. I mean, you two don’t care. It’s not your family’s company that would suffer.
Nikki: No, jabot wouldn’t suffer. We would come up with something that would harm diane but not the company.
Phyllis: Yeah, we’re not going to do anything that will tarnish the reputation of your family’s company or summer or kyle. Just something that will expose diane.
Ashley: Right. Well, excuse me if I sound just a little bit skeptical. Does the name gloria ring a bell? Remember when she tainted jabot’s face cream? She said she meant no harm. It was a huge catastrophe.
Nikki: Please tell me you’re not comparing us to gloria.
Phyllis: Please. It’s not like we’re going to poison the resort wear and pin it on diane. Our plan will be more nuanced.
Ashley: God, you know, you lost me at nuanced.
Phyllis: We’ll handled this deftly. We promise.
Ashley: I love this idea. I think it’s fantastic. You don’t think anybody’s going to be a little suspicious when you suddenly have this desire to join marchetti?
Phyllis: I was prepared for that when I broached the subject with summer.
Nikki: Wait a minute. You already talked to her about it?
Nikki: How did she react?
Phyllis: Well, of course, she accused me of having ulterior motives where diane is concerned, but I handled that.
Ashley: Did you, phyllis? How can you be so sure?
Victor: Son, I’ve already told you you’re not responsible for that bastard’s death. Nothing has changed.
Nick: Your assurances aren’t helping. There’s too many holes in the story to ignore.
Victor: Well, in my opinion, the simplest explanation is always the best.
Nick: Come on, there’s nothing simple about this. I’ve replayed this over and over in my head. Ashland striking his head after I hit him. Blood on the hearth. The man was unconscious. He had no pulse. Now, even if it was weak, and victoria and i somehow both missed it, how did he have the strength to get out of the room?
Victor: Beats me. But, you know, he had a history of surviving calamitous situations, you know?
Nick: There was no trail of blood. Are we to assume that he dressed his own wounds, that he was in the frame of mind that he could avoid detection, even though the police and your guys were looking for him? And what about the ring on the floor next to the french doors that I found? There’s just too many things about that night that don’t make sense, dad.
Victor: Worries me that you’re so upset about all this, but I’m not surprised. You’ve always had a rather deep sense of morality. All I can tell you is that there’s nothing for you to worry about. Your conscience is clear.
[ Glass thuds ]
Nick: That’s not an answer. Who do you think you are?
Adam: Well, you were right about locke’s death being a high-profile case. This whole thing is very shocking.
Sally: Yeah. I can’t believe he’s gone.
Adam: I just — I can’t help but think that it didn’t have to come to this, you know? The whole battle with locke should’ve ended when he accepted his payout, when he gave up his stake at the company and he agreed to annul his marriage to victoria.
Sally: I remember how optimistic you were about your plan to pay him off and that it would get him out of everyone’s lives.
Adam: Well, unfortunately, that was not enough for victoria. She would not settle for anything less than his complete destruction.
Sally: It’s a tad hypocritical of you to criticize someone else for wanting revenge.
Adam: Now that we’re through, you’re going to tell me what you really think about me, huh?
Sally: Always did. Only now I’m not taking pains to phrase it in a way that won’t hurt your feelings, since you certainly didn’t spare mine.
Adam: So you’re getting a little payback of your own?
Sally: I’m only pointing out that I know you contemplated partnering with ashland shortly before he died.
Adam: That was when I thought he was going to go after newman enterprises. Once I found out his target was victoria, I wanted nothing else to do with the guy.
Sally: Well, at least you still have a few boundaries.
Adam: The last time that I saw ashland, he was a total mess. Guy creeped me out. In fact, I warned my dad, nick, and victoria that they should keep their eyes open when it comes to locke.
Sally: You did?
Adam: I had a bad feeling that things were about to spiral, and I didn’t want to see anybody get hurt. I had no idea how things would ultimately play out, but I never could’ve predicted that the great locke ness monster would meet his fate in a simple car crash just like that.
Sally: You don’t know the half of it.
Adam: Oh? You’re just going to dangle that out there, just like that? Come on. You know you want to tell me.
Kevin: Hey there.
Chance: Hey. What are you doing here?
Kevin: Someone at the station told me you came here for a pick-me-up, and I wanted to talk to you in person. It can’t wait.
Chance: Is it about ashland?
Kevin: I got another piece of the puzzle.
Nick: You know, you don’t get it both ways — one minute promoting family unity and the next completely shutting me out. You’ve made it an art form with me, with everyone else, constantly changing the rules as you see fit. I’m done playing that game.
Victor: This is not a game, son. I’m trying to help you.
Nick: Then help me. Stop trying to twist things into this alternate reality where you get to control what’s right and wrong, what’s your version of the truth.
Victor: The hell is wrong with you, son? Throwing around all these accusations. You want facts? Ashland locke is as dead as a doornail. Victoria’s at home with her children. She’s safe. You’re alive and well. You should be home with your son. Stop looking for a fight.
Nick: The fact that you’re fighting me on this just proves that you’re hiding something. How am I ever supposed to trust you when it’s always this kind of manipulation every single time?
Victor: Son… …ashland locke was found dead on your sister’s living-room floor. My men took care of things. At metro by t-mobile… you can save more.
Diane: I can tell I made you a bit tense bringing up phyllis, but there’s really no reason to be uncomfortable.
Jack: Oh, because conversations about the dynamic between you and phyllis are usually so much fun, huh?
Diane: [ Sighs ] I am not going to condemn phyllis for what she said to me. I am used to her attitude towards me, and I probably even deserve it some of the time. I’m no damsel in distress, but I just wanted to say that I appreciate how you handled the situation.
Jack: I was mostly looking out for harrison.
Diane: I know that. But if there was a tiny, little part of you that was looking out for me, too, then thank you. It’s been a long time since we’ve been on the same side. To be honest, since anybody’s been on my side. I’ll show myself out.
Jack: Good night, diane.
Diane: Good night, jack.
Phyllis: If I say I’m going to handle something, I’ll handle something.
Ashley: Is that so?
Phyllis: Yeah. And work on your skills. Summer was this close to seeing your “operation diane jenkins” text. Work on your discretion.
Ashley: Maybe you should work on where you put your damn phone. And by the way, we cannot afford for you to fail.
Phyllis: I’m not going to fail. I don’t fail. I’m going to do this, and no one’s going to get hurt. Not the abbotts and not my daughter. Only diane. Trust me, I’m not going to let you down. Listen, diane is a ticking time bomb ready to go off. I’m just going to pull the pin out ever so slightly and wait for it to happen, and no one will notice.
Sally: Already? Thank you. Well, I should probably go.
Sally: In the spirit of moving past any ugliness or awkwardness between us, I could share with you what I’ve learned about ashland’s last night on earth, but I think I’ll pass.
Adam: [ Scoffs ] Right.
Sally: Not exactly feeling magnanimous, especially after you called me pathetic and broke my heart.
Adam: Look, sally, I —
Sally: No, I don’t want to hear it. Whatever reasons you had for breaking things off with me, you were willing to hurt me to get what you wanted. Now, both of us have to live with the consequences of that decision. My loyalty has to be to newman media now. I am not about to give you any information.
Adam: [ Sighs ]
Nick: Tell me what you did, and I want to know all of it.
Victor: [ Breathes deeply ] After you and victoria ran out of the house, my team went into that house, found ashland locke dead on the floor. They removed the body and put it into his car… drove him close to the ravine, and staged an accident. That’s it.
Nick: Simple as that, huh?
Victor: Simple as that, yeah. Yeah. You did nothing wrong with saving your sister’s life. Ashland locke was about to go after your sister and do bodily harm to her, perhaps kill her. You saved her from that, son. You went in. You intervened. You knocked him on his ass so hard that he hit his head on the floor. He died because of it. It was an accident. Not your intention to kill him. An accident. You think I give a damn that ashland locke is dead? No one cares about it. No one. He’s a bastard, a fraud who did such damage to our family and to your sister and to you. Don’t you feel badly about that. So the cops would investigate, right? They’ll find the car in the ravine, look at it, find no evidence, case closed. They move on. You should do the same thing. Move on. Forget this ever happened. And don’t forget, my motive was to protect you from being investigated.
Kevin: We got a tip about a car matching the description of ashland’s vehicle. Last night, it was seen parked at a gas station on the road that runs along the back end of victoria’s property.
Chance: How long was it there? Which direction did it come from? Which way did it go?
Kevin: I don’t know. That’s all the information I have right now.
Chance: Okay. We’re going to have to get our hands on some of that security footage from the gas station and from the street cameras in the area. Still a lot of questions about how ashland got from victoria’s house to the bottom of that ravine. Maybe now we can get the answers we need.
[ Taps fingers ]
